Easing of restrictions

So from midnight last Friday night there was some easing of the COVID-19 restrictions and by Saturday morning I was wondering how everyone was going to react. At first I thought people might go a little crazy and there would be crowds everywhere, and the curve would once again start to expand. I guess we won’t know about the curve for another week or so, but interestingly, on Saturday morning when I put the question out on Facebook nearly every one of the 100 responses said they were staying home, keeping warm, going out into their garden, going to work, and not really changing their behaviour! Interestingly, the people who went out and braved the crowds at the shopping centre didn’t seem to enjoy it that much, so maybe a lot of us have coped with the adjustment of not going out better than we thought. However, it is pretty clear that for most of us, it is the not seeing people that we know and those that we love, that is really the hard part.

One of my oldest friends - from my primary school days - lives in Italy. I was chatting to him the other day and he described what life is like in lockdown for them, now more than six weeks in. Mostly he said they were coping fine, but he did say that when he goes to the supermarket once a fortnight, he organises that another of his friends in the town be there at the same time, just so they can smile and say hello in person (while maintaining their two metre distance). On Saturday, we headed down to Golden Beach, got some fish and chips, and sat down by the water away from everyone else; and I have to say, it was really nice to just sit in the sun and look out to Bribie Island. Who knew how entertaining it could be just to watch the mums and dads with their kids, pushing prams, carrying scooters and fishing rods, and riding bikes ringing their bells to announce they were there ... ahh, the COVID-19 simple life! Police praise good behaviour

Sunshine Coast police would like to commend the community in regards to generally complying with the ease of COVID-19 restrictions over the May long weekend. The Sunshine Coast hinterland was identified as a focus for police due to large crowds attending areas of Gardners Falls and Mary Cairncross Park. There was also a notable increase of recreational motorcycle riders in the hinterland area. While most people did the right thing, police issued four infringement notices with people failing to comply with the Chief Health Officer’s direction. These alleged breaches occurred in the Sunshine Coast hinterland. All beaches were patrolled regularly and no major issues were identified. Well done to you all and keep up the good work to stop the spread of COVID-19.

Aussie golf icon launches Maleny course on global stage By Richard Owen Adam Scott, the world’s number six ranked golfer, launched Maleny’s golf course onto a global stage last Friday using his Instagram profile to live broadcast a 9-hole match-play round with good friend and club pro-manager Wayne Perske. Billed as ‘Nine Holes with a Mate’ Adam, 39, joked, chatted about strategy and answered questions posted online while riding solo in a cart during the 80-minute social media event viewed by thousands of fans around the world. The 2013 Masters champ has been at home on the Sunshine Coast with his family during the pandemic lockdown away from tournament golf and welcomed Wayne’s recent invitation to play at Maleny’s 18-hole course. Adam, who played the course beforehand with Wayne and son Billy, some other lucky juniors and his father Phil, said the charm and appeal of Maleny’s Par 68 golf course was that it was created and maintained by an army of volunteers. “Maleny is a really fun story that I stumbled across through Wayne. The passion of the membership has given a real heartbeat to this club,” Adam said. “They deserve a lot

of credit and I just want people to come and experience it with a game.” The broadcast was Scott’s first attempt at livestreaming using Instagram and he has promised to use the platform to show off more “hidden gems” like Maleny on the Sunshine Coast where he grew up playing golf. Wayne said Adam’s generosity and patronage had given Maleny Golf Club a “massive credibility boost” which had put the course on the international golfing map. “It was a fantastic experience, not only for me, but for our golf club during these times when everyone’s doing it a bit tough with social distancing in place,” Wayne said after the match which the “Maleny Masters” duo squared. “Australia’s doing a fantastic job because one thing we can all still do (almost everywhere) is get out and play some golf.” Club President Jeff Kruse said the committee and membership had been overwhelmed by Adam Scott’s generosity as a result of his friendship with Wayne Perske. “Adam is a true ambassador for the sport and a great Queenslander, and we can’t

Diverging diamond interchange closer to completion After what seems like an eternity, the Caloundra Road / Steve Irwin Way / Bruce Highway upgrade plans are finally coming together, with the next round of the ‘diverging diamond interchange’ traffic changes happening over the coming weeks. According to a construction notice issued by the Department of Transport and Main Roads, from this week (weather permitting) the new, permanent southbound exit to Landsborough will open. The current Exit 188 loop will close and the new exit will take Landsborough-bound drivers off the highway and directly onto the westbound carriageway of Caloundra Road just prior to the highway bridge. In approximately three weeks’ time, if you’re going to Caloundra, you’ll notice that the new eastbound lanes will be open on the Caloundra side of the bridge. Then a month later, in a move which promises to greatly improve the traffic flow, Caloundra Road westbound will open as two lanes, removing the current bottleneck that exists just before the overpass bridge.

How the Caloundra interchange will end up in a few weeks’ time As the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) construction notice highlights, the entire intersection is far from complete and is still operating in an interim capacity. The new interchange will continue to evolve as lanes and access ramps are

Simply the best! By Sonia Clark In the lead up to Mother's Day, GC&M News ran a Facebook post asking our readers to simply tell us why their mum was the best. We received some lovely responses that shared some beautiful insights into what made many of our local readers mums so special. Peta Bowtell nominated her mum, Mary Kerle, for always putting others first and for being the most selfless and supportive person - especially during Peta’s own long and sometimes painful journey to motherhood. Readers may know Mary and Len Kerle from their years of community involvement, especially in support of local sporting clubs, as well as in more recent years, when they spectacularly light up their Beerwah home on Old Landsborough Road for their annual celebration of the Christmas season. Growing up in Maleny and Beerwah, Peta said her mum Mary had stood by her side and literally held her hand through all her major challenges in life, including being

diagnosed in 2002 with a rare blood clotting disorder and lupus that nearly resulted in the loss of her leg. As a result of her condition, Peta was advised that it would be unwise to pursue pregnancy, however 18 years later she is now blessed to be the proud mum of Lulani (Lulu) which means ‘gift from God’. Peta thanks her mum Mary for being there every step of the way during her highrisk pregnancy, and especially during the challenges when Lulu was born 12 weeks prematurely. Peta, who attended Maleny primary and high school, said that growing up along with siblings Billie-Kay, Paul and Daniel, her mum was always the rock of the family and the glue that held everyone together. Both her mum and dad were founding members of the Maleny Little Athletics Club in the late 1980’s and Maleny Panthers Churches Soccer Club which later became Maleny Rangers Football Club. “Growing up, everyone would always come over to our house to hang out with our family, and mum and dad would look out for all the kids and play games and sport with us,” said Peta. “Mum was always like another mum to all the neighbourhood kids.” Diagnosed with a life altering rare blood condition as a young woman, Peta said it was her mum that helped her through all her big life changes including having to give up her beloved sport, and dealing with the reality that she may never experience motherhood herself. Peta met her husband Luke in 2008, and the couple married in 2011, trying for many years to fall pregnant. In January 2019, the couple had their first IVF

transfer but sadly miscarried. Then, in June 2019, the couple had a second attempt which miraculously resulted in the pregnancy for Lulani, born three months prematurely on December 7 last year. “Throughout all the trials and tribulations of my pregnancy journey, to having a premature baby, my mum has been with me and supported me in all ways, selflessly,” said Peta. As a high-risk pregnancy, Peta had to travel for tests three times a week at Royal Brisbane Hospital, and at 25 weeks, an obstetric appointment picked up that she was already two centimetres dilated. Dramatically, at 27.3 weeks it was discovered that Lulani’s heartbeat was failing, and Peta was rushed to emergency surgery that nearly resulted in the loss of both Peta and Lulani’s lives. Thankfully, both survived the ordeal with Lulani born weighing just 917 grams, and remaining in hospital for the next ten weeks. Peta said that life now is amazing with her precious little one, who will be the couples only child, and appreciates the ongoing support from her mum who she said has taught her the significance of unconditional love, and the strength of the bond you just can’t explain of motherhood. For her first Mother's Day as a mum, Peta is looking forward to spending the morning with husband Luke and Lulu, by walking on the beach near their home in Redcliffe, and then the couple will finalise plans to spend family time with each of their mothers. Peta said she has learnt so much about being a mum from her own mum. “My mum has been my rock, every step of the way, and I realise that no matter what the obstacles, you can get through anything in life if you have your mum around, she’s been amazing!” said Peta.

Sensible steps back to school Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has announced the first steps allowing Queensland children to return to school. The Premier said a sensible, gradual return is only possible because of Queensland’s success in slowing the spread of COVID-19. “Compare what has happened in this state to what has happened in other parts of the world and Queensland can be very proud,” the Premier said. “It’s only because of these good results we are able to once again lead the progress on the road to recovery.” The steps to full resumption of school are: • May 11: Kindy, Prep, Years 1, 11 and 12 return to school • May 15: Assess state-wide response to easing of restrictions • May 25: Proposed re-opening to remaining students in remaining grades “These are the children who are at the most important junctures of schooling – the beginning and the end of their educational journey,” the Premier said. The stages to full school resumption are consistent with Queensland’s measured

approach to confronting COVID-19 and balancing family needs with protecting lives during the global pandemic. Chief Health Officer Dr Jeanette Young said Queensland’s early response to confronting the pandemic was paying dividends now. “You only have to look at what we were dealing with prior to the school holidays with what we have now, to appreciate why Queensland is in the strong position it is,” Dr Young said. Education Minister Grace Grace said the government’s plan has been endorsed by the independent and Catholic school sector as well as principals and teachers alike. “Most of all, we have listened to Queensland parents who have done such an incredible job for their children supporting them through home learning,” the Minister said. “I think we all appreciate our teachers and school staff like never before. “And their health and safety remains paramount. “When students begin to return to school, our schools remain safe and hygienic environments for the teachers and staff who will be in the workplace.”

Social distancing measures to protect adults at schools will include: • Staff and students who are unwell must not attend school • All adults must maintain social distancing of 1.5 metres • Adults must not gather in groups in and around school grounds, car parks, school gates and outside classrooms • Parents should use stop, drop and go options rather than walking children into school grounds • Strict personal hygiene protocols, including the cleaning of high touch surfaces such as desks and door handles, will remain in place. The Premier said no one is forgetting we are still in the midst of a global pandemic. “Thankfully Queensland has done better than most and that’s something we can all be proud of,” she said.

Q&A with Jane Stronach Sunshine Coast Libraries Sunshine Coast Libraries have recently launched their new eLibrary Helpdesk Service to assist customers with their online access and eLibrary technology questions. The eLibrary provides a brilliant source of free online content and material, with users able to explore a world of resources including magazines, books, streaming services for movies and music, and more; the helpdesk service has been set up to support customers get the most out of their eLibrary experience. GC&M News caught up with library operations team leader, Jane Stronach, to find out more about the new eLibrary Helpdesk service. Q: Tell us more about why the eLibrary Helpdesk Service was established? A: With all the changes to our Library service due to COVID-19 it became apparent that we would have to remodify our services to deliver a more online focussed service. We have always had a library connect service where customers could seek help or reserve items, book services or computers etc. but as we moved to online access we’ve changed our focus of support towards supporting eLibrary resources. The eLibrary Helpdesk has been functional since mid-April, and

we will still offer support for Library service related questions, as well as offering broader technical support and assistance for our customers to access eLibrary resources; as well as broader online resources – like how to access their local community newspaper online! Q: What are the typical reasons people seek technical assistance? A: To access the eLibrary, customers use their online membership number and password, and sometimes if they haven’t used it for a while they might need assistance to reset their membership. Parents or carers may contact us to seek assistance to login into our eResources to acess Beanstack, which is a program used to encourage reading through children’s digital reading challenges. Assistance is also sought for eLibrary apps such as RBdigital for magazines. Common questions include ‘How do I download an audiobook on my computer?’ and ‘How do I access my password?’ Q: What are some common frustrations with technology? A: People remembering passwords, and upgrading technologies or devices– often when they move to a newer model. Q: Since launching, what have you found people are contacting the service for most? A: Most questions have been about passwords, accessing eResouces, and questions about downloading. We also get general questions about returning books and when will we reopen. Q: What type of advice/help do you provide? A: Any help around using devices such as mobile phones, iPad, tablets and computers. Our staff can help with a broad range of questions about connecting, searching credible

resources for trustworthy information, scams etc. Q: To date, who has been contacting the eLibrary Helpdesk Service? A: Most questions do come from the adults who are parents or carers and the senior demographic. Q: How do people get in contact? Contact help desk by emailing libraries@sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au or phoning 5475 8989 between 9am and 5pm Monday to Friday. Q: What new initiatives are in the pipeline? Recently we restarted a modified Home Library Service to existing Home Library Service customers who are unable to leave their home. We have some plans for a new service, but we are still finalising delivery to ensure it meets health requirements; this will be for customers in the community who are isolated, or vulnerable and unable to access the eLibrary. We have also developed online programs, which take customers to eLibrary resources. They provide a wide range of activities and information to support our community during this period. Call for mobile phones to help save lives With all of us being urged to stay home to protect the community during the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s important to acknowledge that the home is not always a secure and safe place to be – particularly if you are in a violent or emotionally abusive relationship. According to a recent Google statement, online searches regarding domestic violence in New South Wales have increased by 75% since the first recorded COVID-19 cases in the state, demonstrating that many victims are finding themselves in a more vulnerable position confined to their homes with their abuser. In order to reach out to these victims in a practical and innovative way, a group of Sunshine Coast businesses - IC3 Solutions, King IT, Domestic Violence Business Solutions and Fresh PR & Marketing - have partnered with the Red Rose Foundation to develop a pilot project that collects unwanted mobile phones and delivers them to those in need. Sunshine Coast residents are being urged to get behind the pilot project and find 300 unwanted working phones and cables in their drawers and cupboards at home or at work. Business News Dental practice restrictions eased As the government cautiously moves to lifting restrictions in response to tackling COVID-19, the good news for those requiring dental work is that more patients can now get dental treatments, as the restrictions on dental practice have eased from level three back to level two restrictions. Following a National Cabinet decision on April 21, the Australian Dental Association (ADA) announced that dentists can open their doors again to attend to a broader range of patient needs. While the move to level two restrictions still has limitations, additional treatments will be possible including examinations, fillings and hand scaling. David Marley from Dental Excel welcomed the news that meant patients were no longer limited to emergency treatment only, and that patients could now book in again for treatments such as routine examination, fillings, root canal therapy and some crowns using the correct precautions. “Up until now we have been offering only emergency treatment to our patients throughout the crisis, and I am very proud of the dedication of all of our staff in providing this service,” said David. “Basically, now using special precautions, significantly more dental procedures are available to patients but at present still not ultrasonic scaling of teeth.” According to a recent media release from the ADA, the new easing of restrictions have been deemed viable due to the

highest level of infection control standards exercised by dentists. While the easing of restrictions is not a complete return to a full scope of practice services, patients who were previously faced with delays for restorative and preventative treatment, can now go ahead and book in to improve their oral health. Business supports clinical trials The Coronavirus Action Fund was established by the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital (RBWH) Foundation to raise funds for vital medical research and clinical trials, hospital trials and hospital staff support. University of Queensland Centre for Clinical Research Director and Consultant Infectious Diseases Physician at the RBWH Professor David Paterson said Queensland researchers are set to begin clinical trials of a potential treatment for COVID-19. Professor Paterson has praised the RBWH Foundation and the launch of its Coronavirus Action Fund for its efforts in helping to raise funds to begin the clinical trials. Southern Cross Care Queensland (SCCQ) who operate Caloundra Residential Aged Care and Caloundra Rise Retirement Village will donate $10,000 to the Coronavirus Action Fund. 10

With last month’s devastation of Cyclone Harold and the threat of the global COVID-19 pandemic challenging our Pacific neighbours, a volunteer group of oral health professionals, Smile Vanuatu, is doing all that it can to help. Christine Southall, director of Australians Advancing Oral Health in Vanuatu, said that recent fundraising for the Northern Vanuatu communities received generous community support through the sale of soy wax candles through local businesses. As ANZAC Day was acknowledged recently with the ‘Light Up The Dawn’ campaign, many local families purchased our candles as part of remembering those that have served. “I would like to offer a huge thank you to everyone who purchased candles from the Peachester Store, Peachester Fruit Barn and Frohloff Fruit Barn at Beerwah,” said Christine. “At a time when life is challenging enough for small businesses, these local shops agreed to assist with this Smile Vanuatu fundraiser to purchase much needed donations for children’s health and dental health needs.” Since 2011, the not for profit volunteer dental program has been working with local communities in remote Vanuatu villages to implement healthy habits and promote the benefits of hygiene. Glass House sub-division mounts a legal argument for approval

An application to convert a 4,000m2 lot on the corner of Buzaki and Sahara Roads in Glass House Mountains into five low density lots has been lodged with the Sunshine Coast Council. The proposed sub-development is allowable under Council’s planning scheme as the land zoning is suitable and the blocks are all over 600m2 in size. The planning report submitted with the application tells of a long process to get to this point, with the land having been approved in 2013 to be sub-divided into three blocks. However, the proponents – Peter and

Yvonne Robinson – could not resolve a dispute with the adjoining land owner over easement access rights for sewer and stormwater services. As a result, this prior development approval lapsed. Since then, the Robinsons and their consultants have been pursuing negotiations with council and Unitywater for them to use their statutory powers to assist in the creation of the required services easement. According the planning report, those negotiations were ultimately fruitless, with council and Unitywater either unable or unwilling to provide further assistance.

The planning report stated that council would not deal with this application previously, on the basis it is not properly made in the absence of consent from the adjoining land owner. However, backed by new legal advice, the Robinsons now claim that the consent of the adjacent landowner is not required for this application, despite the fact that stormwater and sewerage discharge need to be secured via the adjacent property. This legal advice suggests that the strongest basis upon which to achieve a successful outcome is to obtain both the reconfiguration and operational works approvals to resolve the exact nature of the easement and works required. “This can then be used as a basis for a specific and formal offer for compensation to the adjacent owners and, should that process (once again) prove unsuccessful, serve as the basis for the resolution of the disputes between neighbours under the provisions of the Property Law Act,” the planning report stated. In fact, the legal advice goes further to state “… unequivocally that the consent of the adjacent owner is not required for this reconfiguration of a lot application, and that the requirement for an easement over the adjacent site can and should be included as a condition of the development approval.” The existing dwelling is to be retained on one of the land parcels, with most of the trees on the remainder of the block to be cleared to make way for the development. The application is deemed to be ‘code assessable’ and as such does not need to be advertised and no formal objections can be made against the proposal. Community News Dave clebrates being 100 years young

By Sonia Clark Former Beerwah local David (Dave) Edwards marked a considerable milestone last Wednesday April 29 when he celebrated his 100th Birthday. While Dave now resides in aged care in North Brisbane to be closer to family, his friends and fellow members at the Beerwah and District RSL Sub Branch were keen to share this milestone news with GC&M News. Born in Horsham, Victoria, Dave joined the Australian Army, 7th Battalion, in June 1942. The Battalion trained at a number of camps in Victoria and once mobilised for war service, moved to Darwin. They were en route when the northern capital was first bombed and the Battalion remained in Darwin for 18 months. After intensive pre-deployment training in the Atherton Tablelands, the Battalion was deployed to Bougainville Papua New Guinea in 1944 and remained there in various locations until the end of the war. During this time Dave was selected to do intelligence officer training, and returned for a period of time

John Nisbet wishes Dave a happy birthday from a social distance to Australia where he achieved Dux of his class. In June 1946 Dave transitioned as a Lieutenant. Following the War, Dave returned to his pre-service job at the Bank of New South Wales (Westpac) in Victoria and then Brisbane, where he and wife Eunice relocated until retirement. The couple then moved to Beerwah and enjoyed breeding and showing King Charles Spaniels for a number of years until Eunice passed away in 2004. President of the Beerwah Sub Branch John Nisbet first met Dave around 16 years ago, when John first joined what was then the Beerwah-Peachester RSL Sub Branch, of which Dave had been a long-standing member, and former Sub Branch treasurer. Discovering that they were neighbours, the two have been good friends ever since, with John regularly driving Dave to branch meetings and other errands, and spending many a pleasant afternoon over the years having a good yarn on Dave’s patio. “We have been great mates for many years, and although Dave is a quiet natured person we’ve shared some great stories. Dave is a highly intelligent man

and even though he’s had a few physical health issues that come with age over the last few years, his is still incredibly switched on. “We talk about all sorts of topics, and have a few fun shared history moments, like both of us buying our wives their engagement rings many years ago at the old Wallace Bishop store on the corner of Adelaide and Albert Street in Brisbane,” laughed John. Dave continued to live independently at his home in Beerwah and still actively attended Sub Branch meetings until a couple of years ago, when it was decided, due to health matters and to be closer to his daughters Lynette and Glenys that he relocate to an aged care facility in Chermside. Dave celebrated his centenary by enjoying a lamington cake prepared by staff members. Due to current COVID-19 restrictions only his daughters were able to attend inside the facility, but John and his wife Lottie were still able to head down and see Dave over the fence, where they were able to chat and wish him well for his centenary.

Funding lifeline for Australia Zoo Australia’s zoos and aquariums, including Australia Zoo at Beerwah and SEA LIFE Sunshine Coast Aquarium, will receive a much needed funding lifeline, with the federal government unveiling a $94.6 million support package to help them get through the COVID-19 crisis. Federal Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace said that the final funding amount locally will depend on the total operating costs of the Zoo and SEA LIFE, but the government expects to provide funding of around $1 million each, subject to final assessments. Mr Wallace explained that it isn’t just people that the crisis is having an impact on and that it was affecting the native wildlife, other animals and marine creatures in our care at facilities like Australia Zoo and the SEA LIFE Aquarium. This funding will assist with the fixed operational costs associated with the caring of their animals, while also helping to ensure both organisations can remain viable and ready to welcome visitors when restrictions are eased. Eligible exhibiting zoos and aquariums funded under this program will have access to a grant that contributes towards up to six months of their animal welfare operating costs.

Glass houses

On May 17, 1770, navigator Lt James Cook was sailing along Queensland’s east coast, just beyond Moreton Island. Cook noted that the three hills which lay to the north very much resembled glass houses, but it wasn’t because they were reflecting sunlight. James Cook was a Yorkshireman. He was born in Marton-in-Cleveland, England in 1728 and he commenced his three-year apprenticeship as a mariner in Whitby in 1746. Whitby has been a major maritime centre since the Middle Ages. Their lighthouse was built by the Romans. The manufacture of glass is believed to have existed in Yorkshire from the 16th century. Glass making requires very high heat and the methods in Yorkshire involved using coal as fuel with air forced through cone shaped furnaces. Cones were constructed of brick and went as high as 35 metres, and 10 to 12 metres in diameter. It was these cone-shaped furnaces that Cook thought the three hills resembled.

NOTE (with thanks to Ivon Northage): If any reader was to obtain a copy of the page of Cook’s Journal dated Thursday May 17, 1770, they may be confused that the day started in the ‘pm’ and progressed through the night. This was because in that era, a ship’s time started at noon on the day previous (May 16) and finished 24 hours later. As far as we are concerned our date in history has not changed as Cook named the Glass Houses in the morning of the following day; so it was still May 17 our time. A commemorative event was planned to celebrate this significant milestone on Sunday May 17, 2020 but a range of circumstances

Pandemic panic buying research USC psychology lecturers have launched a national research project investigating the behaviours that have led people to panic buy during the COVID-19 pandemic. The researchers will collect data through an anonymous survey that is now open for anyone in Australia over the age of 18, who regularly purchases food or other household items from a supermarket.

Dr Jacob Keech and Dr Karina Rune will conduct the study that is focused on understanding the complex behavioural triggers that have prompted people to buy certain products in preparation for life in lockdown. “We’re not looking to only sample those who identify as panic buyers, we hope to receive responses from a broad range of

people, as we imagine that many regular shoppers have changed their purchasing behaviour since the pandemic was declared,” Dr Keech said. “We hope that by getting a large set of responses we’ll be able to measure a range of demographic information and see patterns of both differences and similarities in people’s reasons for particular buying behaviours. “Our study will seek to examine how individual differences and demographic factors, as well as psychological factors are associated with people stocking up on household products since the pandemic began. “The information will help to form recommendations around the messages that should be directed at different groups of people in times where panic buying is occurring, whether that’s during the ongoing pandemic situation or during future disasters.” The link to take part in the survey titled ‘Is it time to stock up? Food & Drink For a tasty night in

By Lea Parkes Last weekend on the Sunny Coast it might have been sunny but we definitely started to feel a bit of early winter evenings, so it got me thinking it was time to start cooking soups. Looking for inspiration, I turned to our very own local ‘Cooker and a Looker’ food blogger Amanda Smyth for one of her great soup recipes. Amanda reckons when it’s cold outside, there’s nothing like a soup to warm you from the inside out. This pea and ham soup is full of flavour, guaranteed to nourish and thaw out your family on cold evenings. The addition of fresh peas and parsley oil gives this simple favourite a lift. So this week I am going to be making:

Pea and Ham Soup with Parsley Oil Ingredients 1 brown onion 1 leek 2 carrots 1 celery heart 1 ham bone 750g green split peas 3 cups frozen peas 1 bay leaf 1 bunch parsley 1/ cup olive oil, plus a splash for sautéing 3 salt and pepper to season

Method Sauté the onion and leek in a heavy based pot until translucent. Add the ham bone and bay leaf, cover with cold water (about four litres). Simmer for 1 – 1½ hours, until the ham is falling off the bone. Remove the ham bone. Add the finely chopped carrots, celery and the split peas to the soup and simmer until very tender (45 minutes to an hour). When the ham bone is cool enough to handle, coarsely shred the meat and set aside. Once the split peas are tender, add the frozen peas and simmer until bright green. Puree with a stick blender until smooth, then return the shredded ham to the soup (reserve a little for garnishing if you like). Season with salt and pepper to taste. To make the parsley oil, combine the parsley and oil in a food processor and blitz until the oil forms a lovely bright green. Serve the soup in warm bowls, drizzled with parsley oil with a side of hot buttered toast. Serves 8

Over the last few days the team at the Beerwah Hotel have been busy putting the finishing touches on their new takeaway menu, set to launch this Friday, May 8. After putting the call out to customers for suggestions, the new menu features a mix of tasty customer favourites and delicious winter warmer options. Cassie Orreal from Beerwah Hotel said the response from customers for new takeaway ideas had been great, with a lot of good suggestions about what they wanted to see. Some clear winners emerged from the suggestion pool, and the new menu is set to feature the return of lamb cutlets, ribs and wings, and crumbed Mahi Mahi burger. Crumbed Camembert will also be a

menu highlight, which Cassie said she is really looking forward to enjoying. GC&M News team members are keen to try out the new menu over the weekend and we can give you more of an update next week. May I recommend to GC&M News readers a new film called ‘Planet of the Humans’ from Oscar winning filmmaker Michael Moore of ‘Bowling for Columbine’ and ‘Fahrenheit 11/9’ fame. It can be watched on YouTube and is a hard-hitting documentary on the renewable energy industry, which investigates most of the renewable systems such as solar, wind turbines, biomass and ethanol production. It casts doubt on the motives of several well-known environmental organisations and individuals, and comes to some surprising conclusions which many people will find unsettling. The dogged persistence of environmentalist narrator, Jeff Gibbs, is fascinating to watch and he is so depressed by what he finds that he needs help from a psychologist. I disagree with his Malthusian pessimism at the end of the film, but it is well worth watching. The uncomfortable evidence found in

He moved with Helen to Maleny five years ago to be closer to his daughter Alex, her children Flynn and Ella, and husband Ian Fullerton at his farm at Beerwah. He was always a friendly face around Maleny, at the Men’s Shed, or visiting Helen at Erowal.

Harry was only 95 years old when he passed, and loved skiing, dogs, wine and life, so it was an enormous surprise that he did not just keep on going. He was cared for in wonderful country style by the staff at Maleny Hospital, who went above and beyond to make his last weeks extra special. He lived a magnificent life full of adventure, happiness and hard work, and will be sorely missed.

A new cartoon on our pages

By Lea Parkes When we decided to make the move for GC&M News to temporarily become online only it meant that we have the luxury of being able to expand the space we could allocate for editorial, so we decided to make a few changes to content. We have always known that while our readers choose to read GC&M News to keep up-to-date with what is happening in the local community, we also know that you enjoy a bit of a laugh. So we have expanded out our jokes section and also incorporated a regular cartoonist. Paul Dorin is an experienced cartoonist who does a number of cartoons each which we will be now making a regular part of our You Said It page. This week we caught up with Paul to find out a little more about what motivates his work. He explained that he scrutinises what politicians get up to everyday and he reckons most of the time they write his cartoons for me. “When it comes to the power of satire I enjoy tackling the big topics, whether it’s presenting a humourous or mordant view, but l think my cartoons are fairly light and tame,” he said. “I have never underestimated the power cartoons and l have received my fair share of criticism. “l am happy for my cartoons to be thought-provoking, serious when they need to be, but most of all, just funny. “Receiving mail about a cartoon is rewarding because you know your cartoons are being read. “It is also great going into a shop and seeing one of your cartoons taped to the wall. “I have never had any complaints from politicians that have starring roles in my cartoons and it’s always nice receiving a phone call from a politician, not complaining, but asking to buy the original.” Paul’s cartoons appear in suburban newspapers around Australia and different parts of the world.

The live music scene going forward With the Queensland Government relaxing some of the restrictions on the number of people who can attend meetings, a colleague noted that it will be good to get back to band rehearsals and jams. “At least we’ll be able to hit the ground running when gigs start again”, he said. I am not as confident as he however that things will ever be the same again, at least for the foreseeable future. For a start, audiences going out in any numbers are not going to happen without a cure for COVID-19, and even with one available, it may never happen again! Why? Well, we need live music venues and so many of them will have either have gone under during this period, or have given up on a business model that includes musicians and

audiences. The 18-30 generation will bounce straight back into going out of course, but others may not. I wonder how many people will have used this period to set up the ultimate home music system with a giant screen. It may just be that going out will translate to going to a mates and congregating in the kitchen when not sitting back with YouTube, or dancing with the big sound system and the fantastic concerts that are available. Mm, I must admit, that sounds like fun to the deejay in me. Imagine the new entertainment - everyone gets to program 30 minutes of amusement for the evening. DJ Deni with her ‘Twisted Covers’ program on Wild Horse FM, was suggesting to me that each week she include a different cover of some of her favourites. For example, the Richards / Jagger classic

‘Wild Horses’ has been covered by a number of artists, not to mention the remixes of those covers that might be out there. The list is inexhaustible. Think of some of your favourite artists - it might be the recently departed Leonard Cohen or David Bowie - and consider how many great clips there are online! As there will be no more from them, now is a good time to see what we have of their legacy. So what can live musicians do? I don’t mean the most successful few percent that will of course stay in demand for big events and venues. For the rest of us, things will be different. Next month I will propose some ideas that have been coming to me. Stay healthy and have a great month while you are at it!

Isolated older people facing visitor restrictions during the global pandemic are being invited to book a weekly chat with friendly USC Counselling students. The USC Counselling and Wellbeing Clinic has partnered with aged care health and wellbeing provider ComLink to offer the Tele-Friends program, a weekly phone or video connection for clients seeking support and companionship. ComLink is now offering tele-health services at comlink.org.au and 5390 1200 for the Sunshine Coast. Master of Counselling program coordinator Dr Mark Pearson said the final-year students had received evidence-based training on how to help boost resilience and would be closely supervised by qualified clinical counsellors during the calls. “Our students know how to converse in a way that lifts spirits and enhances wellbeing at a time when people are feeling particularly isolated or lonely,” Dr Pearson said. “The plan is that they will develop an ongoing relationship with an older person and arrange a certain time each week for the call. “These students know the importance of really hearing what someone is saying and letting them share their worries, but then also when to turn the conversation to positive memories and to remembering times when clients have coped well in the past, and how they can do so again.” You can find out more about the USC Counselling and Wellbeing Clinic via the university website www.usc.edu.au/explore/usc-locations/usc-clinics/usccounselling-and-wellbeing-clinic

In the Garden Notes on becoming a pumpkin farmer … A couple of months ago, I decided to make good use of the large front garden area, which was lying empty but mulched, after clearing out the overgrown and unloved shrubbery (thanks Mr Schulz for your expert bobcat work). Making use of the space, I planted a half a dozen ‘Queensland Blue’ pumpkin seedlings and left them to their own devices. The Queensland Blue is an heirloom variety bred to grow well in our subtropical climate. They’ve been around since the 1920’s and were a staple in many diets during the Depression and post-war years. As a kid, I remember my dad used to keep them on top of the chook shed roof to dry out for a bit after picking, before storing them under the house. I decided on this variety over others – like Kent or Butternut – as we like to bake pumpkin and make soup – and the Queensland Blue is perfect for this as it has drier flesh. It’s also a large heavy pumpkin – normally about 3-4kg – that stores well in a dry protected spot. My seedlings settled in nicely and have grown akin to giant alien lifeforms, with tentacles of green searching out all corners of the garden. Luckily, nothing has yet disappeared below their spreading reach … but the two resident Bush Curlews are looking decidedly nervous. The rains we’ve had has been enough to keep them going, but pumpkins are hungry feeders and so I’ve lightly applied a general granular fertiliser around them every three weeks. Flowering has been amazingly prolific, which the bees have been loving as the male flowers are bursting with pollen. But – as can happen with pumpkins – the male to female flower ration is about 50-1, meaning that you end up with only a few pumpkins per vine. With Queensland Blues, this is okay, as they are so large anyway. Even with the attention from the bees, I’ve been hand pollinating the female flowers, just to be sure. One of the major problems with all the cucurbit family (zucchini, cucumber and pumpkins) is the poor fruit set, mainly as a result of low pollination rates. So, giving them a little helping hand just improves the yield.

Readers share their pumpkin stories …

Pumpkins don’t have too many pest problems, but I’ve run into one … the resident Brushtail Possums. They discovered the first pumpkin that set and grew to about a soccer ball sized, which tasted pretty good and so they set to eating their fill each night.

I’ve solved this by buying $5 plastic washing baskets from Mitre 10 in Glass House (thanks Marty) and placing them over each of the pumpkins with a piece of wood on top to hold it down. So far so good – each of the remaining pumpkins is uneaten and growing so large that they’re almost too big for the basket. The possums have now decided to eat the growing tips of the runners. But this is okay, as it will force the vines to grow lateral shoots; so the possums have actually done me a favour here. It seems Tracey Abrahams has the touch “I have eight on my vine plus more coming heaps more flowers.” And so do the Steensens. Janelle Steensen says “My nieces’ vine just grows wild. The crop is their pocket money.” The photo says it all. Diane Brown sent photos of her pumpkins all the way from Tasmania. She credits the good flower set with the pumpkins growing close to a big rosemary bush, which has lots of flowers that attract the bees.

The concept of a ‘poop pumpkin’ is new to me, Shared by Tania but Barry Manks also called his the same thing. “We have poop pumpkins on our lawn. Misses said they have to stay”. Nic Hilton seems a little peeved with her hubby – “I want to grow them but Ken won't let me take over the backyard LOL. I did it with watermelons and he said that was enough!” Come on Ken, give a little. Problems surfaced with pumpkins too … Lewis Kwarcianyi asked “I’ve got a big vine with lots of flowers and they turn into little pumpkins but then don’t progress ... I’ve waited patiently for many weeks but still no success ... any ideas why they’re failing?” This is a pollination problem. You’ll need to help nature out. Go out in the morning, look for any of the female flowers – they’ll have little pumpkins attached to them – then pick a male flower, peel off the petals to leave the male part covered in pollen. Carefully swipe this over the female flower part to deposit the pollen and fertilise the flower. This should make all the difference. Jade Blee has pest problems. “Fruit flies always sting our pumpkins and ruin them by filling them with grubs who then eat them into a stinky mushy shell so I’ve given up ever being able to grow them here”. The Queensland fruit fly is a real problem – they sting my cucumbers, zucchinis, capsicums, and tomatoes. It doesn’t surprise me that they sting your pumpkins.

Martin Growing pumpkins through winter should help, but you could do what I now do with all my tomatoes (and I’ve even started doing this with zucchini and capsicum) … I cover them with paper. For smaller fruits (like tomatoes), I use a paper bag. But for larger fruits – like pumpkins – you could try wrapping them in newspaper or making up large exclusion bags from a small weave netting. There are bait options to control fruit fly numbers, but most work on the male fly rather than the female – which is the fruit stinging culprit. But there’s always someone with the Midas touch … and that prize goes to Julie Hodgson. “My pumpkin PB has to be this one. A Napolean variety that I grew from the seeds of a fruit I bought at the Ipswich market.” That’s a beauty – and if others want to grow something like that, it’s actually called a Lunga di Napoli. It's a prized heirloom variety from Italy and can grow huge. Some people enjoy their pumpkins in other ways … Sally Joyce wins for the most unusual use for pumpkins … well the vine. “My Dad always makes whistles out of the vines and he has taught my sons how to make them. Now that is our favourite thing about growing pumpkins.” … might have to ask Sally to do a story on how to make pumpkin vine whistles for a follow up column.

Energex understand that people who are trying to beat the coronavirus boredom are getting busy with DIY projects but they are keen to remind locals that safety must still be front of mind. Energex’s Safety Advisor, Kevin Hore, is urging people to “Take Care and Stay Line Aware,” as there can also be underground power; this can be a serious safety concern people should be aware of when digging around their property. “People looking to do a bit of digging around their property and live in an area with underground power should know where cables and other services run beneath the surface before digging,” Kevin said. “In yards with underground power, cables will

generally run in a direct line from the green pillar box on the footpath to the home’s meter box, but if there is any doubt on the location of the underground cable a licensed electrician will be able to find the exact position. “If you are digging outside the fence line people must call the free ‘Dial before you Dig’ service on 1100 or if the line is congested you can lodge an enquiry at www.1100.com.au. Specially trained staff will give the details of the cable and other service layout near their property. “There are very few second chances when coming into contact with any electricity and everyone must remember to ‘Take Care and Stay Line Aware’.”

DIY tree trimmers risking lives

Several homeowners were lucky to be alive recently after the trees and vegetation they were cutting down contacted powerlines, according to Energex. The incidents have prompted Energex’s Safety Advisor, Kevin Hore, to urge people to “Take Care and Stay Line Aware” before they undertake any tree trimming – especially in areas with overhead power. “We understand people are trying to beat the coronavirus boredom with DIY projects, but safety must still be front of mind,” Kevin said. “In the past couple of weeks our crews have been to three incidents around the state where the homeowners were cutting 36

vegetation too close to powerlines causing trees to fall into the high voltage. “In two of the cases, bamboo being cut touched high voltage powerlines sending a shock down to the DIY-er. “Power was also cut to a neighbourhood when a homeowner brought trees into powerlines outside their property. “So our message is clear, never cut trees, tree branches or other vegetation anywhere near overhead powerlines, because you can kill yourself or others instantly!” Kevin urges homeowners to either call a professional tree trimmer or Energex on 13 12 53.

It won't be long now." Soon, they came to the lolly aisle and the little girl began to shout for lollies. When told she couldn't have any, she began to cry. The mother said, "There, there, Julie, don't cry - only two more aisles to go and then we'll be checking out." When they got to the checkout stand, the little girl immediately began to demand gum and burst into a terrible tantrum upon discovering there'd be no gum purchased. The mother said serenely, "Julie, we'll be through this checkout stand in five minutes and then you can go home and have a nice nap." I followed them out to the parking lot and stopped the woman to compliment her. "I couldn't help noticing how patient you were with little Julie," I began. The mother replied, "I'm Julie - my little girl's name is Tammy."
