Hi Everyone...

This marks the fourth year that the lovely Lottie Nisbett has enthusiastically knitted and crocheted until she had created enough pieces to yarnbomb our Poinciana tree in time for Christmas. Each year Lottie has experimented with different colours, styles and textures to create a not-so-traditional ‘Christmas Tree’ for the Glasshouse Country & Maleny News office. While Lottie is the mastermind behind the knitting needles and the crochet hook, her husband John (also the President of Beerwah & District RSL) and Brownie take on the complex task of installation. However, this year’s installation featured an extended support crew, with Lottie and John’s daughter Laurel-Lea and grandchildren Lianna and Billy who were here on holiday from France, joining in. Previously the family had only been able to admire Lottie’s handiwork from photos, which was not nearly as good as seeing the magic of it come together in real life. I really love that we are able to create a different tree each year for the community and visitors to enjoy and my favourite part is seeing people interact with it – yes, interact. Every day we see people stop their cars, or their strollers or the dogs if they are out walking, and have a look at the tree, admire the work, sometimes taking selfies. But what I love most is seeing how people lean out and touch the tree and feel its coat as they walk past. Regards, It is great to see our tree bringing just a little bit of joy into our community!

Say no to a casino Federal Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace has called upon all Sunshine Coast residents and business people to take a public stand against the construction of a casino in Maroochydore's new SunCentral Development by signing his ‘Say No to Council’s Casino’ petition, launched last week. The call followed recent media reports of face to face discussions between SunCentral directors and international gambling corporations. Mr Wallace has been an outspoken opponent of Sunshine Coast Council’s casino plan, and has pledged to fight the proposal at every stage. “I believe that the Council’s plan to change the character of the Sunshine Coast by building a casino at their Maroochydore development is emerging as one of the biggest threats to the future of our community,” he said. “A casino on the Coast would add to the cost of living pressures on many of our hard-working families, increase crime and anti-social behaviour, and drive up drug and alcohol abuse. “This plan risks driving more family breakdowns, and increasing rates of mental and physical ill health.” The petition states that a casino would “not be in keeping with the relaxed family-friendly environment that makes the Sunshine Coast world renowned” and would “cause irreparable harm to the social fabric of the Sunshine Coast community”. It calls upon “the Sunshine Coast Council, via its wholly owned development company SunCentral, to abandon its

Maleny to host 2018 National Cross Country Championships More than 1,200 athletes and 4,000 visitors from around Australia and New Zealand will converge on the picturesque Maleny Golf Club and Community Precinct next year for the National Cross Country Championships. Athletics Australia and School Sports Australia decided to stage the two-day event at Maleny on the weekend of August 24-25, 2018, following the successful running of the Queensland championships on the 3km course earlier this year. Maleny Golf Club President Max Whitten said this major athletics event only came to Queensland once every eight years and would provide Maleny and the Sunshine Coast Hinterland with a major economic boost. “The combined resources of the Maleny District Sport and Recreation Club, especially its services club members, will be called on to make this a truly memorable occasion for Maleny, the Sunshine Coast and all of Queensland,” Dr Whitten said. Dr Whitten said Maleny was now recognised

as having one of the best cross country racing venues in the nation since opening up the undulating golf course and community precinct for local and state competitions in recent years. “On August 4 next year, prior to the national event, Queensland Athletics will again be holding their annual state championships in Maleny for all age groups from eight to 70,” Dr Whitten said. Similarly, the Maroochydore Athletics Club on the Sunshine Coast will run one of its local Cross Country Series races at Maleny again on May 6 next year. “These events all bring significant economic and social benefits to our district and the Maleny Golf Club is pleased and proud to be able to open up and share its facility for major cross country activities,” Dr Whitten said. “As a member of Maleny District Sport and Recreation Club, the Maleny Golf Club is reassured to know that the running of these events will draw in the support and services of its fellow clubs.”

Aura Community Grants Program Christmas has come early for 15 community groups on the Sunshine Coast who have been named the inaugural recipients of Stockland’s Aura Community Grants program, with almost $300,000 worth of grants being awarded last week. Representatives from Stockland, Good2Give and local community groups joined Sunshine Coast Councillors Rick Baberowski and Peter Cox at Aura for the official announcement of recipients. The biannual community grants program, delivered in partnership with Good2Give, is a collaboration between the Sunshine Coast Council, the Queensland State Government and Stockland. It will see approximately $5 million of funding delivered to local organisations throughout the duration of the construction of the Aura community. Ben Simpson, Regional Manager for Stockland, said the Aura Community Grants program aimed to support the many local groups and associations which form the backbone of the Sunshine Coast community. “This year we have allocated $285,351 in funding and we are delighted to be able to assist these very deserving organisations who play such an important role in our local community,” Mr Simpson said. Launched on July 10, the new program invited community organisations and not for profit groups delivering services in Caloundra North, Caloundra South and the Glasshouse Country areas to apply for a grant.

Glasshouse Country recipients of the Aura Community Grants funding included Twinnies Pelican and Seabird Rescue, Beerwah & District Kindergarten Inc, Glasshouse Country Community Group and Nungeena Aboriginal Corporation for Women’s Business. “We are extremely pleased with the response we received to our first Aura Community Grants program and it was fantastic to see the many ways in which local groups are helping to make our region a better place for all,” Mr Simpson said.

Speed limit changes on MalenyKenilworth Road Motorists will be slowed down in a bid to improve safety on Maleny-Kenilworth Road at Conondale. Transport and Main Roads North Coast District Director Leah McKenzie said the speed limit would be reduced from 100kph to 80kph along a section of this road prior to Christmas. “A speed review undertaken on this road identified the need to reduce the speed between Curramore Road and Elaman Creek,” Ms McKenzie said. “Our review considered factors such as road characteristics, crash trends and prevailing speed limits. Based on our findings, we determined that a speed reduction would benefit safety along this steep and winding section of the road.” Ms McKenzie said the changes were endorsed by the local speed management committee, which includes members from Queensland Police, Sunshine Coast Council and Transport and Main Roads. “I urge all motorists to observe the new speed limits once they are introduced and to always drive to conditions,” she said.

Business News Owners of Pasta d’Vine set to retire

By Sonia Clark Long running Beerwah business owners Sue and Oskar Schlapa are set to retire from business life on December 23. The owners of Pasta d’Vine on Simpson Street for nearly 10 years, Sue and Oskar also previously ran the Beerwah Fruit Market for four and half years, and have been an integral part of the Beerwah business community for nearly 15 years. Together Sue and Oskar have a combined total of over 100 years of hospitality experience and so now they have certainly earned their chance to farewell their working life and enjoy some time to themselves. As anyone who has owned or operated their own business will know, you have to be prepared to put your heart into it and dedicate countless hours of hard work into making it a success. Both Oskar and Sue have mixed feelings about retiring after so many years of business, yet they are both excited about taking the next step in their lives. Beerwah business in conflict with zoning A company specialising in renewable energy innovation has lodged a material change of use application with Sunshine Coast Council for their existing business at 52 Old Peachester Road, Beerwah. Established at the site since 2007, the business called Petawatt (operated by Electrygen Pty Ltd) was required to submit the application after being served with a ‘Show Cause Notice’ when Council became aware that they did not have the correct approvals under the planning scheme. The company runs a research and technology industry, specialising in the development and retail of renewable and sustainable energy, and energy producing systems. Unfortunately, the land they operate from is zoned as Rural and the industry use is inconsistent with the agricultural purpose of the land. The property was a strawberry farm until about 2007, after which the existing research and development facility evolved on site. According to the application report, the technology employed includes a research and development/ demonstration facility to develop the technology associated with the production of hydrogen fuel cells. The facility uses a variety of renewable energy sources including solar and wind energy to generate the electricity required to split water into hydrogen and oxygen using electrolysis. The hydrogen can then be stored in pellets/discs for future use. The oxygen is discharged into the atmosphere. The facility generates no noise and only operates during daylight hours.

The research and technology function is not a consistent use for rural zoned lands, and council officers have informed the applicants that for the application to succeed, they will have to show that the proposal has enough merit to overcome the conflict with the Planning Scheme. It would have to demonstrate the community benefits of the operation, including why the business cannot operate from another location with the correct zoning, the merits of locating on this site, and any other alternative sites that were considered prior to establishing the use in this location. Passion for healthy living recognised By Lea Parkes You may have read about or heard of the QCWA’s Country Kitchen program which is a really positive program to support people living in regional areas to improve their health by adopting healthier eating practices. Since early in 2016, members of the QCWA Nambour North Coast Division Branches have become involved in the program and have been working hard to engage with the local community to create awareness of both the hands-on nutrition workshops and talks and the program’s key messages. These activities have included involvement of the Maleny and Glasshouse Girl Guides, QCWA Beerwah Market Days and partnerships with the University of the Sunshine Coast, Maleny Neighbourhood Centre and Flexi School. The orange aprons of the Country Kitchens Teams appear at all places where the community gather. Free recipes and information are available for those who would like to take part in healthy food choice activities. QCWA Maleny member and

Help empty the shelter

Sunshine Coast Animal Rescue Service is hoping to find forever homes for as many of their rescue dogs as possible with their ‘Name my fee to set me free’ campaign on Saturday and Sunday, December 9 and 10, from 10am-5pm. SCARS volunteer treasurer Penny Brischke said: “We are hoping the Sunny Coast will take advantage of this great opportunity to find a dog for their families before Christmas. “We really would love for all of these dogs to be in homes for Christmas and would love for the shelter to be empty. “Unfortunately, that is unlikely with this period being a busy one for cats and dogs finding themselves homeless over the Christmas holidays.” SCARS is inviting the public to tell them what they want to pay to adopt one of their dogs, with the proviso that it must be a three-figure amount

and all usual adoption conditions will apply, and it doesn’t include dogs under six months of age, small breeds or pure breeds. All animals receive an initial vet check and care including heartworm, worming and flea prevention, vaccinations, food, shelter and care, de-sexing and micro-chipping, and adoption prices include all of this and registration with the local council. SCARS, an independent, not-for-profit charity, cares for up to 50 dogs and 50 cats at any one time and saves 1,000 cats and dogs every year. SCARS relies heavily on government grants and the community to keep operating and spends over $250,000 on vet care each year. Community Playgroup of the Year The Coonowrin Kids Playgroup that meets at the Glass House Mountains State School during the school term was recently recognised by Playgroup Queensland as the Community Playgroup of the Year. To be nominated for the award the group must have demonstrated exceptional service with the playgroup movement by providing a high level of commitment and dedication to the organisation. The playgroup must have demonstrated excellence in promoting the ideals of Playgroup Queensland through a commitment to best practice in service delivery, a broad representation of their local community, have strong volunteer input and good community profile and support. Peachester Playgroup kids love their new playground!

It was a special day for the families at the Peachester Playgroup last week. They not only held their break-up celebration for the year, they enjoyed a visit from Santa and they were also able to play in their wonderful new playground for the first time. During the year Playgroup Queensland successfully gained a Gambling Community Benefit Grant of $20,000 for the Peachester group to replace the existing playground. The playgroup’s co-ordinator, Krysty Idle, and her husband Ryan, through their Landscape business Charmak Landscaping, have worked tirelessly and collaboratively with their business contacts to be able to use the grant to create a park that would have cost between $40,000 and $50,000 to install. Through some very generous in-kind support Krysty Idle with her daughters and installation work, as well as being Makenzie and Charlotte able to access some additional near-new equipment that could be repurposed, the playground is an absolute hit with the playgroup. Krysty said the playgroup members are keen to continue the expansion of the playground facilities and next year the group hopes to be able to incorporate a bike track around their shed as well. The playgroup meets on the grounds at the back of the Peachester Hall each Tuesday morning during school term time. The playground is also available for use by the community outside of this time, which provides a valuable resource for the area’s young families.

Help needed in war on Lantana

Have you seen galls on Lantana bushes? If you have, Biosecurity Queensland wants to hear from you as it may be a biological control their researchers want to monitor. Lantana bud mite (Aceria lantanae) was released in Queensland in 2013 as a new effort in the battle against lantana. The microscopic mite feeds on the plant, causing galls (abnormal growths) to form on the flower heads which reduces seed production and spread, or on the vegetative material which stunts the plant growth. Biosecurity Queensland needs your help in monitoring for galls to assess the spread of the mite. If you have seen galls, please take a picture and note the location (GPS or street address) and send these to the research team by emailing kelli.pukallus@daf.qld.gov.au.

Pikes Road, Glass House Mountains Sunshine Coast Councillor Rick Baberowski is pleased to advise that road widening and upgrade of Pikes Road, Glass House Mountains is now complete. The old road had a narrow, 4m seal width and narrow gravel shoulders. The works included full pavement reconstruction of a new 5.5m-wide sealed road with 0.5m-wide sealed shoulders. Due to the amount of traffic using Pikes Road there was a high frequency of potholes occurring in the road and shoulders and it was unsafe for pedestrian movements. The works were aimed at resolving these issues. As part of the works, the entrances to private properties were upgraded and new culverts were installed along the table drain which has been turfed and grass seeded.

Pikes Road bend In addition to the road upgrade, the existing concrete causeway, which was cracked and undermined, has been re-constructed. The new causeway is now 7m wide with new culverts, headwalls and rock scour protection installed. The works came in ahead of schedule and on budget.

Travel with Penny in 2018 Hello fellow gardeners and travellers. Aren’t the gardens thriving with the great rain we have enjoyed over the past few weeks. Surprisingly, the Camellias and Magnolias still have flowers along with many others which is totally out of season! What an exciting year 2017 was for me in international travel with my groups touring to Sri Lanka, Canada / Alaska, Singapore and Japan. My domestic tour program included visits to the Hunter Valley region, South West of Western Australia, Melbourne / Tasmania, Norfolk Island, Ulladulla and Toowoomba. The gardens were absolutely beautiful, from the native Orchids and flora of WA to the Rhododendrons and Azaleas in Tasmania, not to mention the lovely gardens of the Hunter Valley. I escort all of my group tours, arranging transfers to Brisbane to make travel a complete experience. All you have to do is pack! Even though my tours are garden inspired, general sightseeing is always included, from the famous to the little known attractions of each area. A morning tea and get together to meet fellow travellers takes place a few weeks before each tour. I have my itineraries ready for 2018 and I suggest you book early to avoid disappointment.

March sees us heading off to the Melbourne Flower Show, a spectacular event with so many plants and designer gardens. One of the highlights is lunch on the famous Tramcar Restaurant. April is Cherry Blossom time in Japan, a sight not to be missed. Mid-April sees me escorting a group to Sri Lanka, one of my newer destinations with so much to see and do. In May we travel by train to Longreach, including a day trip to Winton for some true outback scenery and hospitality. This is an extremely popular tour and not to be missed! We then have a wonderful tour to China in October for the autumn spectacular, which also includes the Great Wall, Terracotta Warriors, and the Yellow Mountain area. There is a choice of two destinations in November with the Adenium Festival in Taiwan which includes a grafting demonstration of these beautiful plants. We also visit Taroko Gorge, Sun Moon Lake, a very interesting rice museum and much more. New Zealand is the last tour for the year, taking in some gorgeous gardens and the beautiful scenery that both islands are renowned for. Contributed by Patty Beecham Neville Saffron has been a member of the Beerwah Writers Group for five years, and in his spare time is the Committee Co-ordinator for the group's newest book, a collection of short stories and poems to be published next year. Pictured with a mock up cover, Neville said: "Our writers group is diverse and everyone contributes and that's reflected in the current publication coming out. It's going to be a great read!" Neville is currently writing his own fifth book: ‘Tales from the Life I've Lived’. If you are looking for a friendly, creative challenge next year, come along to the Beerwah Writers Group. Our members travel from Maleny, Beerwah, Glass House Mountains, Buderim, Brisbane, and Palmwoods. We are an active group of local amateur and professional writers who meet to discuss aspects of writing and publishing. Established in 2006 by a group of likeminded people who wanted to share their experience with writing, the group meets on the second and fourth Fridays of the month in the Beerwah Library. Meetings are expected to begin again in early February 2018. Members attending usually donate a gold coin towards the cost of morning refreshments. New members are welcome and encouraged; a yearly subscription of $5 applies. Is your 11½ -17 year old already looking for something to do during the holidays? They could try participating in the Duke of Edinburgh International Award at either Bridge Award level for the 11½ year olds or Bronze Level in the International Award for 14 years upwards. Completion age for all levels is 25. Participants set goals for themselves to achieve, in a new or existing skill, physical activity and volunteering. An adventurous journey completes both Awards, and most of it can be done over the school holidays. There are a huge number of preapproved activities that cater for everyone, so they can continue with their favourite activities or set challenges to learn new ones. Cost for new participants for the Bridge Award is currently $42.50 and $150 for Bronze. These will rise in the new year. If your grade 12 student is already a participant, just because they’ve left school, doesn’t mean they can’t continue with the Award. Mullum Music Festival 2017

I had the pleasure of attending the Mullum Music Festival at Mullumbimby on the November 18 weekend. It is three hour drive south and as we volunteered to work at the festival and planned to stay in the camping ground it wasn’t going to be an expensive weekend. However our vehicle broke down just before getting there and, although ‘saved’ by my RACQ membership, the budget was blown there and then. Oh well, the festival itself is fantastic, so I’m still happy we went. It incorporates the whole town which is a clever idea, and the nine venues run for the three days of the festival. The walk between the two most distant is less than a kilometre, which most have no problem with, but two magic buses (colourful double deckers) run throughout the festival providing transport and a further fun element to the whole event. For me it was the pleasure of so many new acts that was the main attraction of Mullum. Although I am a huge fan of the artists we have in South-east Queenland, south of the border you are more likely to hear Sydney and Melbourne acts. Two that struck me were the Teskey Brothers and Husky. Husky features the wonderful keyboardist Gideon Preiss along with lead vocalist Husky Gawenda who has a David Crosby (of Crosby, Stills and Nash) tone – a beautiful voice and paired with Gideon’s harmonies, it is a sound to die for! The Teskey Brothers are a little more inclined to soulful, bluesy music with an Allman Brothers influence appearing in Sam Teskey’s guitar work. Again definitely worth travelling for. The extraordinary vocal range and tone of Harry James Angus of Cat Empire fame evokes that of Louis Armstrong, and when combined with the harmonies of his Struggle with Glory project members and the superb band – a modern take on old time jazz and gospel, one is transported! But wait there is more! Speaking of Cat Empire, keyboardist Ollie McGill was there with his wonderful jazz crossover trio, and Hussy Hicks and Lion and the Leaves with their harmonies, and acoustic sound driven by percussion, were fantastic. I was keen to hear Jon Cleary and the Monster Gentlemen with their funky New Orleans vibe (for me at times reminiscent of Les McCann), but the volume in the venue spoiled it for me. I am picky about PA sound and overall it was good at this festival, but there was the occasional average sounding show. That said, put Mullum on your music festival list for next year, the above acts were only a small taste of what we enjoyed. Michael has a recording studio in Peachester. Division 1 - Sunshine Coast New features for Glass House Mountains District Park Excitement is certainly building as construction for the third and fourth stages of Glasshouse Mountains District Park progress. A range of new facilities including a playground, dog off-leash area, amenities building and car park are being added for the community to enjoy. The amenities

building and car park are due to be completed in late February 2018, while the other facilities have already been completed. Stay tuned and over Christmas why not plan a visit to the region’s newest (and increasingly awesome!) district park, with an official opening planned for early next year.

Christmas News Meals for Aussies in need this Christmas Glasshouse Country and Maleny residents can share the spirit of Christmas at Woolworths Beerwah and Maleny by purchasing a special OzHarvest token for just 50 cents to help provide a meal for an Australian in need. OzHarvest Sunshine Coast Chapter Coordinator Michele Lipner said: “For many families in Australia, Christmas will not mean a nourishing meal and an abundance of joy. “Thanks to the Woolworths OzHarvest Christmas Appeal we can make sure good food gets to those in need over the festive season and throughout the year ahead.” Woolworths Beerwah and Woolworths Maleny Operations Manager Sam Williams said: “This year we are focused on sharing the spirit of Christmas with our customers and our local community. “For just 50 cents, customers can play their part in sharing that spirit beyond their families and friends and help provide a meal for someone this festive season and support the growing need for hunger

relief across the region,” Sam said. All customers need to do is add a 50 cent meal donation to their shopping at Woolworths Beerwah and Woolworths Maleny or online. By placing their name on any tokens purchased and hanging them on the Christmas tree in store, they can share the spirit of Christmas. The more tokens purchased, the more meals OzHarvest can provide to help feed Australians in need.

Give the joy of reading this Christmas

As we start preparations for Christmas, spare a thought for those doing it a bit hard over the festive season and give the gift of literacy. As a part of council’s Sunshine Coast Libraries festive celebrations, the annual Books4Kids Christmas gift drive has begun. Sunshine Coast Libraries and the Salvation Army have once again joined forces to promote literacy and spread the Christmas cheer to less fortunate children around the region. The concept is easy. You simply buy a new children’s book and drop it into any Sunshine Coast Library. You don’t even need to wrap it as the Salvation Army will look after this. The books will be then distributed to less fortunate children and families by the Salvation Army through their Santa workshops. The drive runs until December 18.

Parking meters take a break for Christmas Sunshine Coast Council is once again providing a parking meter fee amnesty in the Caloundra CBD for the Christmas-New Year holidays. Council agreed to support the Caloundra Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s

request for an eight-week amnesty from Saturday December 2, running until the end of the school holiday period. Division 2 Councillor Tim Dwyer said it was only fitting the day Santa came to town was the first day of fee free parking in Caloundra.” Each of the 71 parking meters across the CBD was turned off and courtesy stickers placed on them as a reminder that no payment is required.

Small donation will make a big difference Organisers behind this year’s Glasshouse Country Community Carols are calling for community donations of non-perishable food items to help bring a little Christmas cheer to local families in need. Event coordinator Jenny Broderick would like to invite people to donate one or more nonperishable food items which will then be included in a ‘hamper pack’ and gifted to one of our local families who may be doing it tough this Christmas. Suggested items include tinned food items, soup, pasta, sauces, rice, cereal, chips and biscuits. In the spirit of Christmas, maybe a ‘Christmasthemed treat’ could also be a nice inclusion. Many people may have items already in their pantry that they could easily donate and even a small donation will make a very real and meaningful difference to a local family this Christmas. The Glasshouse Country Community Carols will be held on Saturday December 16 at Turner Park, Beerwah from 4.30pm-8.15pm. Donations can be brought along on the night and placed in a specially marked trailer. However, in the lead up to the event, if you would like to donate any food items, you can drop them into the GC&M News office

Don’t forget to send your letters to Santa

The busiest night of the year is fast approaching for Santa and his little helpers, and Australia Post is urging children to post their letters to Santa soon so there is plenty of time for him to reply. Make sure you send your letters to Santa, North Pole, 9999 with a 65c Christmas stamp on the front of the envelope. Don’t forget to write your name and return address on the back of the envelope so Santa knows where to send his reply. Santa Mail letters can be placed in either a dedicated Santa Mail box found at most Post Offices, just like this one outside the Maleny Post Office, or any red street post box.

Year 5 students from Mooloolah State School recently went on their annual camp to the Queensland Conference and Camping Centre at Mapleton. The students were very excited and could not wait to get to camp so they could let off some steam after a busy year of learning. Mapleton camp offers team building activities as well as individual tasks to push yourself; whether it be to try something new or to conquer your fear of heights, there is something for everyone. Activities included a giant swing, a flying fox, abseiling and archery, swimming, orienteering and Mia with a camp leader a whole lot more. Even the teachers had a ball and Mr O’Donnell even found himself being a natural at archery, especially with the moving targets. The students came back weary but excited to finish up their school year and get ready for holidays before moving into Year 6 for 2018 as the next school leaders.

Sensory garden planting

Elimbah State School Prep and Grade 1 students joined Moreton Bay Regional Councillor Adrian Raedel and Principal Leisa Wood in planting out the final sensory garden at the Elimbah Terraces Project. The project has spent over $20,000 to upgrade the shaded embankment area near the oval and it features new sensory gardens, retaining and turf works, a seat and pathway. The finishing touches, stainless steel etched signs featuring historical and current photos of the school, were scheduled to be installed last week. The project was made possible by the Gambling Community Benefit Fund, donations by Moreton Bay Regional Council and local businesses. Cr Raedel is presented with a Thank You Certificate from Principal Leisa Wood and Elimbah State School students

At Beerwah State School a Support a Reader volunteer assists individual children with their reading, engaging with them to build their confidence and enjoyment of books. The art of reading is widely encouraged at Beerwah State School, and the program gives the opportunity for you to help too. Current volunteers enjoyed a morning tea, supported by Principal Ms Austen and many teaching and library staff. Students will often be heard saying "Woohoo, I'm off to reading!" and their enjoyment and gratitude was obvious when the students happily made cards and well wishes for all volunteers. Sherry Anderson, an existing Support a Reader volunteer, summed it up in one sentence: "Volunteers don't get paid, not because they are worthless, but because they are priceless!" Teaching staff across all year levels at Beerwah State School are committed to ensuring that all students develop a strong foundation in literacy in the early years as a basis for progress in all future learning. This successful support program helps to ensure that all learners reach their potential in literacy. A short course will be running in March 2018. Introducing Nikki Lackey Last week Glass House Mountains Early Education Centre welcomed new staff member Nikki Lackey to their team of early education professionals. Nikki has been working for Queensland Childcare Services since July last year and is thrilled to be taking up a position closer to her home at Glass House Mountains. Although she has just started, many of the children recognise Nikki from her previous visits to the Centre helping with relief teaching to cover staff members if they have been away. Nikki is transferring to the Centre to take over the role of Lead Educator in the Senior Kindy room and brings an incredible wealth of knowledge to her role with over 30 years childcare experience. Nikki will officially start her new position in the New Year and until then she is enjoying settling in and getting to know the other staff members, children and their families. She is looking forward to spending time with the children in the Senior Kindy room and has many years experience working with this age group. Nikki looks forward to developing activities that have a sensory and messy creative play focus. I really try to make the room as fun as possible as we know that the more engaged and interested the children are – the more they want to learn,” says Nikki. Continuity of care giver and familiarity of staff members for young children is very important, and Nikki appreciates that at Glass House Mountains Early Education Centre most of the staff members have been there for years.

The Maleny Golf Club is keen to enlist more young people into its ranks and is putting the call out to all budding juniors and children who are interested in learning to play golf. The club is holding a free introduction to golf afternoon this Saturday, December 9, between 1pm and 3pm where children will be able to participate in a couple of hours of fun activities. No golfing experience is required and all equipment will be provided with a qualified teaching professional on hand to assist with the activities. Come and experience first-hand the beautiful Maleny course which is now about 30 months old. Information about the Maleny Juniors will be provided to parents on the day. Sunshine Coast teenagers and avid gamers Landan Porter and Riley Over have come up with a unique school holiday event that will cater for likeminded kids aged 14-17. Wanting to create a social activity based around their keen interest in gaming, the creative duo have teamed up with local charity SunnyKids to launch ‘The Player eSports Tournament’ on Saturday December 16 at The Hive Business Space in Maroochydore. Starting at 10am, pre-registered competitors will be battling it out “face to face” using PS4 and Xbox One consoles with the ultimate winner claiming ‘The Player’ title and a cash prize. All the necessary equipment (games, consoles, and controllers) will be provided, however competitors can bring their own controller if they prefer. The day will involve an individual round robin competition over three games with participants having two games each on Fifa (Xbox1), Project Cars (Playstation) and Rocket League (Xbox1). There will be a chill out zone and Smash Bros to play while not in competition. Competitors get points for a win and there will be a second chance draw. Organisers are planning to have a projector screen showing a ‘director style’ live stream of the event for spectators along with the stream being broadcast to YouTube and Twitch. This inaugural eSports Tournament will seek to encourage kids to interact and socialise in real time rather than socialising through online systems and non-face-face interactions. The event is designed so that participants will experience a safe and engaging competitive forum for entertainment, fun and excitement. ‘The Player eSports Tournament’ is on December 16 from 10am to 3pm at The Hive Business Space, 55 Plaza Parade, Maroochydore. Parcel delivery nightmare

For over a year now, our parcel delivery service has been absolutely abysmal. Anything that comes via Startrack never makes it to the door, whether it be a signature required item or not. Most of the time we don't even get a slip to let us know that the item is awaiting collection. We simply have to keep checking at the post office, which we shouldn't have to do considering we have already paid for it to be delivered to the house. We are almost always home, and I highly doubt a year's worth of online shopping and gifts have just all coincidentally been delivered on the rare occasions nobody is home. Any mail small enough to come with the local postie always arrives as it should, and the staff at the post office are always patient with our constant checking for our parcels.

In mid November we received reports from a couple of Landsborough locals that there were sheep grazing in the long grass at Peace Park. Sadly by the time I had made my way down to check them out the offending animals had moved on.

I encourage anyone having similar issues to lodge a complaint with Australia Post. This issue is affecting locals, their businesses, and taking up the time of post office workers who shouldn't have to deal with someone else's workload. Allyson Marshall Beerwah

Re: Too many killer cats

I agree whole-heartedly with Peter’s letter about cat problems in the November 29 edition of GC&M News. Registered as a member with ‘Gardens for Wildlife’, the issue riles me something severe. The cats aren't the problem. The problem is the irresponsible petowners. I've had several bird kills, newly planted vegetable seedlings dug out (when the cats use my gardens as their toilet), and am woken at any hour of the early morning when there are cat fights right outside my window. Several other neighbours have voiced disapproval (of irresponsible pet-owners) when their cars have been scratched by cats. I have so much video footage of the cats visiting my place that I know, without a doubt, whose cats they are. I have no problem with cats. I like cats. It's the irresponsible pet-owners I have a beef with. I consider it about time that Council commenced policing this problem. Robert Foote Mooloolah

Self-employed? What you need to know about taking out a mortgage There are lots of great things about working for yourself. You are your own boss! You get to start work and knock off when you decide. But how does being self-employed affect you getting a mortgage? Here, we help you navigate the process. Get your paperwork in order. Employees generally need to show the last two or three payslips and a recent income statement to prove their income. For self-employed people, it’s a little trickier. Most lenders will need to see tax returns or business activity statements (BAS) statements from the last two years, in order to adequately assess your income. You may need to provide evidence of GST registration, and your ABN or Certificate 28

of Incorporation. You may also need to provide recent statements for your business transaction account. Income consistency. Lenders are looking for a steady flow of income. If you are self-employed, income and expenditure may fluctuate year to year, especially if you have startup costs. If there is a big discrepancy between your tax returns, you might need to substantiate the variance by providing additional evidence. Talk to your broker and accountant about which documents you need to provide, to improve your chances of securing your mortgage. It’s worthwhile using an accredited accountant to help track your income and expenses, and make sure everything is

airtight. If there are question marks about your income, it might work against you when you try to take out a mortgage. Low doc mortgage. Some lenders go out of their way to attract self-employed people looking to take out a mortgage. Some lenders only ask for one tax return. Some also offer low doc mortgages, which means you need less paperwork. Be aware, though, that low doc mortgages often incur higher interest, fees, and lenders mortgage insurance (LMI). Low doc mortgages generally lend a maximum of 80 per cent, so you will need to make sure you have a good deposit. You will still need to provide BAS, GST registration, and your ABN. Have a great credit rating. Keeping

your credit card debts low and your repayments swift will work in your favour when lenders assess your eligibility for a mortgage. New cervical screening test A new cervical screening program has come into effect from December 1, replacing the two-yearly pap test. Those aged between 25 and 74 years will be eligible to take part in the screening program every five years. Cancer Council Queensland CEO Chris McMillan said the new Cervical Screening Test would be more effective than a pap test and just as safe. “The new test will directly detect the human papillomavirus (HPV) that causes almost all

An initial Acupuncture consultation will include an interview about your current health concerns, past health conditions, diet, lifestyle and work habits, menstrual cycle, stress, sleep patterns and how these things impact on health. After a busy weekend recently Brownie and I decided to head out for an early dinner at Cappriccio’s at Maleny and, it being a Sunday, we didn’t think we would need to make a booking. As we drove into the nearly full carpark we started wondering if maybe a booking wouldn’t have been a good idea, and as we entered the restaurant we could see a huge table of twenty or so people. But all was good, and we managed to get a nice quiet spot by the fountain. If you haven’t been into the restaurant before it is surprisingly spacious with plenty of outdoor dining both out the front and at the back on the edge of the Riverside Walkway and, with the L-shaped configuration inside, they can easily cater for group bookings and find a cosy spot for tables of one or two. While we were waiting for our freshly prepared meals, owner Phil Venditti popped out of the kitchen to have a chat and I asked him about their group bookings. He explained that they did lots of group bookings, not just at Christmas but all through the year. On the day before they had catered for a group lunch for around 45, and they are able to offer a range of options for the groups, including set menus and an all-you-can-eat buffet. So, if you are planning a good function, it is worth catching up with Phil and his wife Sonya to see how they can customise a menu for you. After we first arrived we spotted another local

couple we knew and Brownie sneakily spied a spectacular plate of ribs on their table, so without even looking at the menu he had made his choice for the night. As I was out with Brownie and not my regular work lunch companion Sonia (a dedicated vegetarian), I decided to go with another carnivores’ delight and choose the dramatically named Steak Vesuvius, where I cautiously opted for a medium strength capsicum and chilli sauce. The meals were both massive, so sadly once again we had to turn down a look at the dessert offerings – however, we are going back next weekend and are just going to start with the dessert menu!

I am keen to try the new addition to the menu, Cassata, which is made for Cappriccio’s by Maleny Food Co (formerly Colin James Gelato) and I think I will try a Mud Slide Cocktail with it (yes, they even have some tasty cocktails on their menu).

Christmas Things2Do Playhouse alive with Christmas spirit

The Maleny Uniting Church will once again be creating a beautiful (and this year ‘colourful’) Christmas Tree Festival from Saturday December 16 until Christmas Eve on Sunday December 24. Around 40 local community groups will be creating a forest of Christmas trees, with the theme of ‘colour’ and, while the traditional Christmas colours of red and green are bound to appear, you can be sure of some surprises. Children will be well catered for. The trees will captivate them, and there will be hands-on activities, including the Kids Play Zone, to keep them busy. There will be no live animals, but some realistic and appealing replicas. All are invited to come along and view the amazing display of trees. Funds raised will go to RangeCare. According to Irish singer-harpist Hilary O’Neill, Christmas is not Christmas without the blarney. In her new show titled ‘A Celtic Christmas’, Hilary promises a joyful concert of carols, harp and blarney. “While the audience will know most of the songs, I do include some lesserknown carols from other cultures,” Hilary said. Fennel

When I was growing up wandering the waste lands, heavy industrial lots and railway lines around Port Kembla in New South Wales, fennel grew wild like a weed... tall, aromatic and just a damn nuisance when you were trying to walk between the fertiliser plant and the WW2 gun emplacements. Old European men cut the long feather fronds by the armful to take home and feed to their backyard rabbits... “makes the meat taste sweeter,” they’d say. Nobody else gave that feral fennel two glances, but nowadays it’s a delicacy and costs up to five dollars at the supermarket. Fennel originates from the southern regions of the Mediterranean, loving a free draining alkaline soil, with reasonable amounts of organic matter. The form most commonly grown as a vegetable is Florence Fennel, which forms a ‘bulb’ as it matures. This bulb is really just the white, swollen stem bases. Not having grown fennel before, this last season was a trial and I’ve been pretty chuffed with the results. Fennel season here in the subtropics is actually about February to July, but don’t think you can’t grow it out of season, as my crop has shown me. Striking fennel from seed is pretty easy, but you’d best do it in a punnet or small pot. I now like using strawberry punnets, as the closed lid forms a nice humid warm little hothouse. After a week or two, they’ll be up and away, but don’t plant them out in the prepared bed for another two weeks, so that they are established and can survive being transplanted. They can be planted relatively close together – say 15cm apart, as you will be harvesting some smaller ones as they grow, making space for the others to grow larger. Mulch well around the young plants and water regularly. As they need to grow strong healthy leaf fronds, you need to feed them a good balanced nutrient fertiliser, but they also benefit from a side dressing of blood and bone to boost the accessible nitrogen. They don’t seem to have any pests or diseases that cause problem, so from that aspect they are easy care in our climate. To grow good sized bulbs, you need to delay the plant from bolting to seed. The plant will throw out flower spikes if it feels stressed or disturbed. So it’s important to keep the watering regular, don’t disturb the roots by weeding or digging, and if you want to take some of the feathery tops for salads, take bits from multiple plants rather than a lot from one. You can harvest the plant by digging it out in its entirety or you can cut the bulb off leaving the roots and part of the bulb in the ground, which will then continue to shoot the feathery aromatic leaves for your salads. Fennel bulb is great sliced in a salad or used in a stirfry or coleslaw mix. Let one or two plants go to seed and you’ll have aniseed for your cooking and cakes.

Close, Jan... it’s from the ‘stinkhorn’ group. This one is commonly called a Red Cage Fungus or Craypot Stinkhorn (most likely Colus pusillus). They are a fairly common sight, along with their related cousins the Starfish Fungus and the Red Stinkhorn. All the stinkhorns are so named as they secrete a slime which smells of rotting meat. This is used to attract flies, which pick up the tiny spores on their legs and transport them around our environment. The bits you see above the ground are just the fruiting bodies. The real fungus is growing beneath the mulch as a lattice of fine white filaments – called hypha (plural is hyphae). The hypha network then collectively forms the body of the fungus, called the mycelium. It’s these filaments which act on the mulch and leaf litter to compost them down, making nutrients available to plants and other soil organisms. At first you’ll see white egg-like structures at the surface, from which then burst forth the red cage arms of the fungus, normally in the early morning. These only stay upright for a short period of time – normally just a day – after which they collapse and rapidly rot away. After this, you never really notice the fungus until you scratch at the mulch and see the fine white filaments (hyphae). Crinoline Stinkhorn Stinkhorns are recognised as a poisonous species, with the Department of Health warning that they are “potentially toxic, depending on the level of exposure”. They appear to be more of a problem for small dogs and possibly cats, which are attracted to the unpleasant (to us) smell. There’s nothing we can really do to stop them from growing – in fact that would be impossible. They are a native fungus that forms part of our Craypot Stinkhorn environment. emerging

Talk was focused about highlights of the past year and we enjoyed a barbeque lunch, with some members having a wander around the garden, which was looking better after some much needed rain. Maleny Supa IGA and Spicers Tamarind Retreat generously donated to a recent Scleroderma Support Group's fundraising event, a very well attended movie night which raised $5,765. The funds will be used for research into finding a cure for the debilitating disease. Scleroderma is an autoimmune disease with no known cause and no cure. It can be aggressive, painful and often fatal, affecting the eyes, skin, joints and internal organs. No two sufferers have the exact same set of symptoms, making it difficult to diagnose. Towards the end of November every year I’ve this feeling of dread as the advent of Christmas comes on me. It is the dread of what my culture has made of Christmas; the emphasis on material possessions, stuffing yourself silly with carbohydrate rich food, drinking too much in order to put up with family members that give you further indigestion, and having to put up with really awful Christmas decorations and badly sung songs by the latest pop person or band. I hate it all and find no joy in it. But the closer I get to Christmas Day, I change. I begin to focus on the Christmas story in The Bible and it softens my hard heart. I hear a really good carol sung well, and my eyes tear up with the truth and revelation it brings of the coming Saviour of the world. This year I have decided to address what Christmas is really all about, each Sunday in December. Christmas is about food and feasting. The reason

Contributed by Graeme Glover The weather has a real positive for our bowls club. The gardens are looking great and being appreciated by our members and visitors alike. The artificial green, no does not grow, but actually plays really well after good rain as the bedding sand is saturated and the surface plays at a very good speed for the typical club bowler. On the bowls front last week we had a great day of bowls on Monday for our jackpot pairs. We were very pleased to see some of our newer members form teams and perform very well. It is this support and willingness by members new to the club that contributes so much to these days. I would like to say thanks to John and Sandra Kapertanic for their running these days for our club. It is appreciated by our members and the visitors from Pelican Waters, Kilcoy, Woodford and Mapleton who come and enjoy this day on a regular monthly basis. Thanks to all of them also for their support keeping these bowls friendships happening. We didn't have any other bowls because of the rain. On Friday evening we had an excellent Paella, Pie and Presentation night. During the evening all the culinary, bowls and volunteering skills of all our members were acknowledged. Congratulations to all who participated and the eventual champions for their support and success. The evening was a culmination of the 80 years by members past, present and future acknowledged in it being stated the quality of a club is the quality and generosity of them to give of their time to make the club a better place without any expectation. This has been done by so many for so long; this is why we were able to celebrate a truly great evening not just for our club champions in the various formats, but for all members. Thank you one and all from the club for your continuing support. We all look forward to many new challenges and bowls adventures that we will travel together. See you all at the club and on the green.

Thursday November 30: Social Bowls – unfortunately due to the constant rain up until 12.30pm, it was too wet to bowl. We have a lot of people after a game this week so be prepared to play triples! Half of you will be. Our Club Presentation lunch was a wonderful afternoon with 54 people turning up to what I must say was the best club presentations in quite a while. Everyone had an enjoyable few hours with some great food prepared by Club Glass House. Simon Richter was kind enough to play some live music throughout lunch which was fantastic. For the first time the board has created an award for the ‘Most Improved Bowler’ which was won by Grant Podmore and also ‘Club person of the year’ which yours truly was lucky enough to win. For those that didn’t make it, I highly recommend you get there next year if you can. Thanks to all members for a great afternoon. The final Police Bowls day and Christmas Lunch was held on Sunday. Thankfully the weather held off to get some bowls in before they all had lunch. Thanks to the seven Glasshouse members who made the effort and came along to play. The club has designed a new club jacket which will be great for the cooler months. The cost will be $110 each and you can view a photo at the office where you put your name down for games. There is a sheet there to place your orders, along with the size you’re after, as we need an idea by January 25 so the jackets are here before winter. They look unreal! Our club Christmas Break-up Party is Wednesday December 13. Fun bowls to be played with plenty of prizes and raffles. Morning tea, lunch and bowls will cost $20, and for non-players $16. Please bring a $10 gift for the tree. This will be a great way to end the bowling year.

What we need now is a bit of sunshine, please! Saturday's men's monthly medal stroke was held in fairly sloppy conditions. Only 11 players broke nett par and the rundown went to three over, 75. It must have been difficult out there. Jason Voros and Jim Wells tied on 68 to take A grade honours. The countback computer gave Jason the win. In B grade a countback was needed to separate Phil Sell and Tony Del Forno on 70. Phil took the win. A visitor from Gracemere Lake Golf Club, Cam McNeil, took to the course like a duck to water (so to speak), winning C grade with an excellent 65 with Ross Woodward a distant second on 70. NTPs: 2 - Jim Wells, 5 - Col Penney, 16 Robert Griffin, 18 - Murray Elks. Members are reminded that the wet weather ‘carts on paths only’ rule means just that – don't drive on fairways! Leave your golf cart on the path adjacent to your ball and carry a club or two to the ball.

School holiday tennis with Katya The Witta Tennis Club is offering a Kids Fun Day on Thursday December 14 from 8am-1pm. There will be fun and games, a mini tennis tournament and hot dogs, all for $25. After Christmas the club will also be offering Junior Tennis Clinics on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, January 10-12, from 8am-11.30am.
