Hi Everyone... This week’s cover features Maleny Garden Club members June and Bill Dunn who have generously agreed to open their garden as part of this year’s Gardening on the Edge. The couple have a beautiful 2½ acre property with an acre of garden beds and an acre of lawns that are obviously quite a lot of work to maintain but so clearly bring them great joy. Being able to meet with the garden owners before the big event, and have our own one-on-one guided tour of the garden, is definitely a perk of the job and it is really wonderful to hear the story of the garden’s history firsthand. If you love gardening or just like looking at gardens, you won’t want to miss the opportunity to check out Gardening on the Edge this year. It is a wonderful event and such a great fundraiser for the whole community. Each year the Garden Club donates the funds raised over the weekend to local community groups. Residents gather to talk crime prevention Locals came together last week at a park in Glass House Mountains for a crime and policing community barbeque and discussion. The event was an initiative of Glass House Mountains residents Roger and Lea Garner following the traumatic home invasion they experienced recently. In March, the couple were awoken by four armed and hooded home invaders demanding gold and money. The vicious thugs assaulted Roger and ransacked the house before making off. Inquiries are continuing but no arrests have yet been made. The community gathering to talk about crime prevention was hosted by Andrew Powell, the Member for Glass House. Mr Powell explained that the purpose of the event was to gather community members who may be interested in resurrecting the Glass House section of the Glasshouse Country Neighbourhood Watch (which operates out of Beerwah). “It was fantastic to see so many members of the community join the Garners and me for our community crime barbeque,” Mr Powell said. “And, excitingly, quite a few immediately put their hand up to join the Glasshouse Country Neighbourhood Watch. “I will continue to press the state government for more police but it’s great to see the community taking steps to increase and improve their awareness of crime prevention.

Maleny shows Sam some love Sam Johnson, winner of the 2019 ‘Dancing with the Stars’, 2017 Gold Logie Award winner and talented Australian actor, visited Maleny on a chilly Sunday morning with his pop-up mobile market to raise money for his Love Your Sister (LYS) foundation. Sam and his sister Connie started the foundation on New Year’s Day 2013 and Sam’s goal is to raise $10 million in a battle that he describes as vanquishing all cancers with hard science. Connie died in September 2017 of cancer and Sam has continued the work of the foundation. The funds LYS raise go to the Garvan Institute of Medical Research, which is also undertaking genome research with the Lions Childhood Cancer Foundation to identify the genes causing childhood cancer. So not surprisingly Maleny Blackall Range members jumped at the chance to cook up support for Sam’s visit to Maleny, with a very tasty sausage sizzle, with

While Sam was in town he also popped into Maleny Art Direct with artist Vanessa Perske, who currently has her Red Dirt exhibition on show. Vanessa has previously thrown her support behind the foundation with profits raised from the sale of her Barry Emu and Gerry Giraffe prints going to LYS. A glittery glance into the Glassies

Member for Glass House Andrew Powell announced the winners of his annual Glass House Small Business Awards at the Glassies Gala event held at the Beerwah Hideaway during Small Business Week (May 27-31). The event was a glitzy night where small business owners and employees got together with Mr Powell and the local chambers of commerce to celebrate all that small business is and does for the region. Mr Powell said this was the fourth time he had run the Glassies and an extraordinary number of votes were received with more than 3,000 in total. “While the silver glassy is chosen based on the number of votes received, the bronze and gold are selected by myself and the chamber presidents. It was extremely difficult to choose those winners due to the quantity and quality of those nominated,” he said. Brain research project for Alistair A maths major who coded his own games on his first computer in the 1980s scored a perfect grade point average of seven out of seven when he recently graduated from the University of the Sunshine Coast with a Bachelor of Science. Montville’s Alistair Kerr, 43, received a University Medal for his academic achievement and is now contributing to brain research at the USC’s Sunshine Coast Mind & Neuroscience Thompson Institute as he studies for an honours degree in science at USC. He also works as a mentor to Indigenous students and tutors in physics at USC. “My interest in IT began when my family got its first computer, a Microbee 64K, in the 1980s and I taught myself BASIC (an early programming language) to create small choose-your-ownadventure games,” Alistair said. “It further developed in the summer break after year 10 when I taught myself Turbo Pascal (a software system) from books and practise because I did not have internet access.” Alistair gained an OP1 from Burnside State High School and topped his maths II class. In 1998, with an IT degree from the Queensland University of Technology, his career in software engineering took off. He worked for companies such as The Aeronautical Design Service on the Sunshine Coast and in Bundaberg, where he developed automated software testing for light aircraft certification.

Alistair returned to study at USC a few years ago to explore a lifelong love of mathematics and to find other ways of contributing to society. He joined the Mathematicians of USC and a social chess club, and enjoyed lectures and one-on-one interactions with maths lecturers such as Dr Aaron Wiegand and Dr Robert McDougall, who gave valuable feedback. “My ultimate career goal would be to make a useful contribution, no matter how big or small, in humanity’s quest for the stars – or planets,” Alistair said. His current research is part of the Longitudinal Adolescent Brain Study (LABS), a five-year project monitoring changes in the brains of participants aged 12-18 years using regular brain imaging and neurocognitive assessments. Based at the Thompson Institute at Birtinya, the study aims to understand the factors affecting the mental health of young people and develop evidence-based youth mental health programs.

Beerwah intersection set for upgrade Crews are ready to hit the ground running on the $2.5 million upgrade to the intersection at Steve Irwin Way and Roys Road in Beerwah. Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said works would start next week on major resurfacing at the intersection. “The Palaszczuk Government is delivering more than $2.9 billion in roads and transport infrastructure for the Sunshine Coast and greater North Coast region over the next four years,” Mr Bailey said. “This is a key intersection for the Beerwah community, providing access to the Bruce Highway, Woodford, Kilcoy and the Sunshine Coast hinterland.

“This upgrade will drive road safety forward for the thousands of motorists who use Steve Irwin Way each day and will complement that $812.5 million Bruce Highway upgrade from Caloundra Road to the Sunshine Motorway," Mr Bailey said. Works will be carried out between 6pm and 6am to minimise impacts on motorists and residents as much as possible. Traffic controllers, reduced speed limits and road signs will be in place to ensure the safety of motorists and road workers. Motorists should observe all signs when approaching the road works.

Glenview waterpark update The long-awaited water park (called Actventure) on Steve Irwin Way at Glenview is back on the radar, with fresh development application changes submitted to Sunshine Coast Council last week. In a fresh submission to council, the developer, Sanad Capital, has applied to amend the development application (MCU14/0098.02) to reflect recent changes under state legislation. In a cover letter, the developer’s town planning consultants (Adams and Sparkes) noted that they had discussions with the State Assessment and Referral Agency (SARA) and that, in their opinion, council now had less control over the approval than prior to the changes. “It is noted that the provisions of the former Sustainable Planning Regulation 2009 have now changed under the Planning Regulation 2017,” they wrote. “This change has resulted in the application now

requiring referral to the State Assessment and Referral Agency, which will subsequently reduce the matters council are required to assess.” It appears that the developer is preparing for onground action. The cover letter said: “We would also appreciate council’s expedited issue of the confirmation notice, so that the necessary referral to the state can be made. We note that timing is critical, as our client is intending on lodging the next stage within the coming weeks, so we greatly appreciate council’s cooperation.” The developer also continues to dispute the amount of stormwater infrastructure charges imposed by council under the original approval, which is currently before the Planning and Environment Court and is due to be heard again after June 1. Results of the court case will be published by GC&M News as they come to hand.

Trevor Stewart

Captain Trevor Stewart recently retired from the Mooloolah Fire Station, just shy of a 35 years of service. Friends, family and colleagues gathered for a surprise farewell party at the Mooloolah Valley Country Club on Saturday, May 25 to mark Trevor’s significant contribution to the local community. GC&M News caught up with Trevor to find out more about his time with the Mooloolah Auxiliary Fire Service. Q: What can you remember from when you first started? The Mooloolah station covered an area from Eudlo to the north and Glass House to the south. The area was so large that Beerwah was brought on line. We were notified of a fire call by a large siren on the roof of the station going off. This generally woke the whole town up!

Q: When did you become a captain? I took over the role of captain in 1986. Q: Could you explain the ‘living within five minutes distance to the station’ rule? It has been a requirement to reside, or work, within five minutes transport to the station. This is to have a response time within standards. This requirement is probably the biggest problem in recruiting staff, as in small communities such as Mooloolah there is not much industry or employment in the area to draw recruits from. Q: What are some of the more memorable events the service has been called to over the years? The large bushfires in 1991 and 1994 were large protracted incidents that took many days to control. Also, the Nambour fires in 1987 where four churches and a book store were set alight by an arsonist almost simultaneously. Also memorable were two trips interstate to help with bushfires in NSW and Victoria. Q: Do you have a particular memory as a firefighter that stands out for you? No one thing in particular but the road accidents are probably the jobs you don’t like being called to, particularly the ones you remember the consequences of.

Q: How has the equipment changed over the years from when you first started? The biggest change has been to personal protective equipment. The standard of firefighting ensemble and the use of modern breathing apparatus has made a huge difference. The continual modernisation of the tools used in firefighting has made the work safer and more efficient. Q: What are some of the main differences/ changes at the station from when you started? Technology for sure. Communication systems and the use of net-based information both on the fire ground and for training. Q: What has been the most rewarding part of your job over the past 35 years? For sure it would be the community engagement. From teaching fire safety to grade one children, to people visiting open days at the station, the work of a firefighter has been to be proactive and to inform and educate the public in all areas of fire safety. As a station we always participated in community events and even facilitated a few ourselves. (Who could forget the Christmas lolly run, sadly now ended when it became too big - a victim of its own success!). The comradeship within the station crew and families, and just the fact that what we do as a branch of emergency services can make a difference to people is reward enough. Being an auxiliary firefighter can be rewarding, exciting and fun. I can recommend it to anyone thinking of joining their local brigade whether it be urban or rural.

Community News From Death Valley to the Sunshine Coast In a coup for the Glass House Mountains-based Run Queensland event, the Blackall 100, elite ultra-marathon runner and ‘New York Times’ best-selling author Dean Karnazes will compete this year. Hailed by ‘Men’s Fitness’ magazine as one of the fittest men on the planet and by ‘TIME Magazine’ as one of the top 100 most influential people in the world, Karnazes has pushed his body and mind to inconceivable limits. Among his many accomplishments, Karnazes has run 350 continuous miles, foregoing sleep for three nights. He has run across Death Valley in 49ºC temperatures and run a marathon to the South Pole in minus 40ºC temperatures. On ten occasions, he has run a 200-mile relay race solo racing alongside teams of 12. His most recent endeavour was running 50 marathons in all 50 US states in 50 consecutive days, finishing with the New York Marathon, which he ran in three hours flat. Sunshine Coast Council tourism and events portfolio councillor Jason O’Pray said Karnazes would create a terrific buzz at the event, which will take place on the Sunshine Coast Hinterland Walk on October 19. “We’re thrilled that Dean Karnazes will be competing in this year’s Blackall 100,” Cr O’Pray said. Fathers and sons forum A dedicated forum on father and son relationships will be held on Tuesday, June 11 at the Glass House Mountains RSL Hall as part of Men’s Health Week from June 10-16. Fathers and sons of any age and backgrounds are encouraged to attend. The forum will include a talk by guest speaker David Larkin, who will talk on ‘A father's point of view’, followed by a chat and snacks. David was the Sunshine Coast Citizen of the Year in 2016. He is a school chaplain, is married and with his wife Adrienne has nine children - five of their own and four fostered. David likes to make boutique beers and follows his beloved Richmond Tigers AFL team. Year 8 Beerwah High school student Indy Munro headed across the ditch to New Zealand in April as part of the under 14s Aussie Diamonds softball squad for the Auckland Easter Classic tournament. Even though the competition is New Zealand versus Australia, it came down to two Australian teams in the grand final with Indy's Aussie Green team defeating the Aussie Gold team 3-2. Indy said she had a fantastic time making new friends from all over Australia and New Zealand, and developing her skills as an athlete. Indy, who has been playing softball since she was eight, was part of the U12 Queensland School Sport team at the ages of 10, 11 and 12 and she also made the U15 Queensland team at age 12. In August this year she will also be traveling to Japan with an U18 Queensland squad. Congratulations Indy on an amazing effort!

Neighbourhood Centre history celebrated

The building that is home to the Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre will celebrate its 80th anniversary on Saturday, July 13, from 10am–2pm. To mark the significant milestone, there will be a display of photos and memorabilia, memories shared of the good times had in the building, music, a big cake, face painting, food stalls and plenty of opportunities for people to reunite over Devonshire tea and scones. The building was originally the St Columbus Presbyterian Church at Glass House Mountains, so it is likely there are photos in family albums of weddings and christenings around the area. Information is being sought about the building and photos of it throughout the past 80 years. Outspoken is Maleny’s extended literary festival that takes the form of on-stage interviews with writers. On Tuesday, June 25 the second Outspoken event for 2019 will be held at the Maleny Community Centre featuring the author of ‘Stasiland’ and ‘All that I am’, Anna Funder, and will introduce local Maleny author Mary Garden. Before turning to writing full time in the late 1990s, Anna worked as an international lawyer for the Australian Government focusing on human rights, constitutional law and treaty negotiation. ‘Stasiland’ describes the period Anna spent in the former East Germany after the wall came down. It tells the stories of people who heroically resisted the communist dictatorship of East Germany and of people who worked for its secret police, the Stasi. Shortlisted for many awards in Australia and Britain, in 2004 ‘Stasiland’ won the world’s most significant prize for non-fiction, the Samuel Johnson Prize. ‘All that I am’ is set in pre-war Britain. When Hitler comes to power in 1933, a tight-knit group of friends and lovers become hunted outlaws overnight. United in their resistance to the madness and tyranny of Nazism, they find refuge in London. Here they take breath-taking risks to continue their work in secret but England is not the safe haven they think it is. A single, chilling act of betrayal will tear them apart. The book is based on real people and events. Mary has recently released her latest novel ‘Sundowner of the skies’, a memoir/biography of her father, a famous aviator who achieved notoriety when he became the youngest and most inexperienced pilot to fly solo from England to Australia. Fellow pilots ranked his 1930 flight with the achievements of Charles Kingsford Smith and Amy Johnson. Writing the book was a journey of discovery for Mary. Meet the team When you walk through the door at Doctors at Landsborough, chances are the first person you meet will be one of the friendly medical support team women, Erin or Jaimie-Lee. Senior medical receptionist Erin is a Beerwah local who has worked for Integrated Medical Solutions Group (IMSG) for the past three years. She was previously at the Woodford practice but now appreciates working closer to home at the Landsborough practice. Erin says she loves working in Landsborough and an added bonus is that the Landsborough Rural Fire Brigade, where she and her partner volunteer, is just down the road. “I love the team here as everyone is really friendly and supportive. It is also really nice to get to know the locals and I’m always here to help if you have any questions or need more information when you arrive for your appointment,” Erin said. Registered nurse Jaimie-Lee works full time at the

practice and has lived on the Sunshine Coast for the past five years. She has been working with IMSG for two and half years. Jaimie-Lee says she is enjoying working full time in Landsborough and loves the hinterland and surrounding areas. “I love this part of the Sunshine Coast and in particular the village like feel of Landsborough. Like Erin, I’m also really enjoying getting to know the locals and it’s great to be part of such a friendly team,” Jaimie-Lee said. Community Groups Knitfest needs your help

It’s only five weeks until this year's Knitfest Maleny Yarn and Fibre Arts Festival and the organisers are keen to put the call out for help to make it another wonderful event this year. Festival coordinator Debs Swain said they were looking for volunteer knitters and crocheters to assist them in completing the decorations. “People can knit from home or join the group each Tuesday morning at the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre from 10am–12noon. You will just need to bring along your hooks, needles and sense of fun,” Debs said. There is also still time for groups and clubs to register to decorate a tree for the competition. This year they have also introduced something new with a post cosy competition. No doubt you have heard of a tea cosy. Well, this year they are looking for post cosies and entries will be used to decorate the posts outside the Maleny Community Centre (competition details on their website). The decorations start going up two weeks before the event and Knitfest organisers appreciate the assistance they get from the wonderful SES volunteers. However, they will need a small army of helpers to attach, tie-on or sew the decorations in place each weekday morning in the lead up to the event. Don't worry if you have no experience as they are happy to teach you. Male and female volunteers are wanted and there are plenty of jobs if you don't knit or crochet. They also need people to help out at the event on July 6-7, so why not get involved in your community and join others as they put together Maleny's most magical event. Lovely lap quilts for the elderly

A group of dedicated people have fun while they gather to make lovely lap quilts for the elderly from donated new and recycled fabrics. The group has given about 300 of the quilts to aged care facilities that are very grateful to receive them as they are a light blanket that doesn't hurt sensitive legs. The group now meets in Maleny and is looking for like-hearted people to join. Sewing skills are not needed to be part of the group. Get-togethers are held on the fourth Saturday of each month from 9am12noon at Blue Care Maleny Erowal Aged Care Facility in the activities room at 1274 Landsborough-Maleny Road. Join the War on Waste

Glasshouse Country locals inspired by the ABC TV program ‘War on Waste’ have decided it is time to think global and act local, forming their own group to take action in their communities. The newly formed group is on a mission to reduce waste locally by spreading positive and useful messages, advocating for change and handson action. Group member Elizabeth Harris said the group was quite informal with no membership or registration required and so far they had about ten members. They have started meeting on the third Wednesday of the month from 6–7.30pm at the Beerwah CWA hall in Simpson Street. At this stage they are still choosing the projects to focus on but hope to work with schools, businesses and local organisations to help them reduce their waste, as well as supporting local people with information on to how to reduce waste with practical tips. “It is still early days but some areas the group is particularly interested in improving are recycling rates for all sorts of materials, reducing food waste and reducing litter,” Elizabeth said. Local Glasshouse Country and Blackall Range community groups are set to receive a welcome financial boost with more than $78,000 in grants endorsed by Sunshine Coast Council last Thursday. Community portfolio councillor Jenny McKay said the council was committed to acknowledging the important work of volunteers. She said she was proud to announce that 103 community projects totalling more than $590,000 across the Sunshine Coast would be supported through the latest Community Grants Program major round. Cr McKay said the successful funding recipients were making a difference and contributing to our thriving community. In most of the post mortem commentary on how the LNP pulled off a surprise victory there has been little reference to the most obvious reason why Labor failed to get through to the voters. The reason is the incredible impact of two billionaires, one of whom spent $60 million on advertising and the other whose huge media empire unrelentingly bagged every aspect of the policies proposed by Bill Shorten. The leader of the LNP did not need to present policies, and he did not, as the billionaires so thoroughly distorted the opposition, especially the Labor policies aimed at reducing the rapidly rising level of inequality in Australia. The behaviour of our billionaires absolutely trashed democracy, which depends on balanced presentation of arguments for and against policy ideas, while there seemed to be no limit to paid advertising, which actually should be limited. It is not very surprising that billionaires would seek to take advantage of weak regulations about spending on election propaganda and on balanced reporting, as social research has shown that the more unequal a society becomes the more miserable are the people at each extreme end of the income scale. Not surprisingly, those living below the poverty line, as many now do in Australia, are doing it tough. But it has also been shown that the extremely wealthy in an unequal society are also miserable as the behaviour of our billionaires in our recent election proves. They campaigned fiercely against measures seeking to reduce inequality in this election and no doubt will continue to accumulate more wealth and become even more miserable. The Australian Library Information Association’s National Simultaneous Storytime was held on Wednesday, May 22. The program is designed to promote the value of reading and literacy, the fun of books and Australian authors. It is also designed to promote story time activities in communities around the country and provide opportunities to involve parents, grandparents, media and others to enjoy the occasion. This program is now in its 19th year and this year had the most participants in its history. Not surprisingly many local groups took part and enjoyed the story of 'Alpacas like Maracas'. In last week’s issue GC&M News shared Glass House Mountains State School’s approach. This week we feature Landsborough Community Kindergarten and Beerwah State School.

Landsborough Community Kindergarten The kindergarten children joined many other groups across Australia to read ‘Alpacas like Maracas’ with the wonderful representatives from Sunshine Coast Libraries. The children enjoyed the story and some songs and games. Lucy Bauer, the director of the kindergarten, believes that the children gained a lot from these types of programs and looked forward to kindergarten events involving other community organisations. She said the kindergarten also looked forward to participating in this event again next year.

Beerwah State School Beerwah State School deputy principal Deb Lawrence read this year’s simultaneous story ‘Alpacas with Maracas’ to grades one and three. Division 1 - Sunshine Coast Aquatic centre upgrade

The excellent news continues for Glasshouse Country townships with a $500,000 federal government grant awarded to help the council fund the $1.2 million Beerwah Aquatic Centre upgrade. A new 17m indoor pool, a new entrance and signage is expected to be completed in late 2019. The aquatic centre has a wide, growing catchment servicing communities including Beerwah, Glass House Mountains, Landsborough, Beerburrum, Mooloolah Valley, Peachester and the wider southern hinterland area of the Sunshine Coast. The new indoor pool will not only provide additional capacity for these growing communities but also ensures programs such as learn to swim, therapy classes and leisure swimming can be delivered all year round. The pool operators, Swim Fit Sunshine Coast, have also invested in this upgrade and I’m pleased that together we are moving this project into construction phase soon.

Award for Bankfoot House

Fantastic news to share is that Bankfoot House, the Sunshine Coast’s state heritage listed site, won a highly commended award at the prestigious 2019 Australian Museums and Galleries National Awards in Alice Springs on Wednesday, May 15. The award submission, titled Raising the Benchmark, highlighted the extensive work the council and the Friends of Bankfoot House undertook in 2017 and 2018, designed to increase visitors to the Bankfoot House heritage precinct by creating new permanent exhibitions through the shed restoration and enhancing existing exhibitions. If you haven’t been to the Bankfoot House heritage precinct recently, or have never been, pack a picnic and plan a trip to explore the new-look exhibitions!

Public transport integration

Critically important news was announced last month. A planning partnership between the Queensland Government and your council will work for our region’s public transport. This is a key step by the state government in declaring their responsibility, involvement and investment in public transport. While it is early days on a long journey, the real momentum has now started and in my view will be instrumental in providing our townships with better frequency, convenience and improved costs for high quality public transport. Addressing the Sunshine Coast’s need for far better road, rail and public transport is absolutely crucial to securing the livability and prosperity of our region.

State Member for Caloundra At the time of writing, my office is a hive of activity preparing for the Maleny Show. By the time you read this, I’m certain I will have spoken with many of you who took the time to stop by my booth. The Maleny Show is a joyful tradition for the Sunshine Coast community – one that I, my wife Judy and my team enjoys immensely. Each year I am reminded that the show is not just purely about the rides, games and enjoying a dagwood dog (though that is a big part of it for many) but is an important reminder of our region’s strong identity as an agricultural centre for Queensland – both historically and currently. The Sunshine Coast has one of the largest regional economies in Australia with a gross regional product of more than $16 billion as of 2015. We started from humble beginnings as a cattle and timber economy and truly burgeoned in the late 1800s as a small-farming and agricultural economy. It’s no surprise given our coastal position and sub-tropical climate, which is ideal for a wide range of agriculture and food products. While our regional economy now relies on newer industries such as tourism and health care, it’s important to note that agribusiness is very much alive and well. There are more than 900 agricultural industry businesses on the Coast and according to the University of the Sunshine Coast Food Research Group, as of 2018 the sector was valued at $700 million. Our region’s food and agriculture production covers everything from beef, pork, poultry, dairy and seafood to fruits, vegetable and nuts as well as lifestyle items such as turf, cut flowers and nursery plants. The Profile of Sunshine Coast Food and Agribusiness report prepared by USC and the Sunshine Coast Council provides valuable insight into the industry. According to the report, poultry remains our “most valuable agricultural commodity, worth approximately $111 million” followed by wild-caught seafood valued at around $58 million. Despite last year’s setbacks, which we are all aware of, the strawberry industry has been a growing powerhouse for the Coast that I am certain will make a strong comeback with the season just upon us. So how do we go forward as a region, pushing ourselves to advance technologically while continuing to support our agribusiness identity? We as a community need to continue to support it. We can continue to shop locally, dine locally and take the opportunity to buy direct from the farmer when feasible. Organisations such as FAN (Food and Agribusiness Network) are also leading the way in connecting our local businesses by spearheading local innovation and collaboration. Agriculture will continue and has a strong future and continuing place in our regional identity. Business News Maleny to feature on MasterChef

by Lea Parkes MasterChef Australia earlier this year filmed in Queensland for the first time, providing an opportunity to promote the state’s unique local produce and world-class restaurants. The state government provided support to bring the cast and crew to Queensland through Tourism and Events Queensland. As part of Queensland Week, on Tuesday, June 4 the top-rating show featured our stunning hinterland. The unique, authentically rustic wedding venue The Old Dairy Maleny on the Landsborough-Maleny Road, with its panoramic views of the glorious Glass House Mountains and spectacular sunsets, hosted Masterchef. It must have been an exciting opportunity for the venue to showcase both the best in local produce and the area’s stunning natural beauty. The show kicked off the week in Brisbane before travelling to Maleny for an immunity challenge. Tourism Industry Development Minister Kate Jones said hosting MasterChef in Queensland would generate great exposure for the state’s tourism sector. “Millions of people around Australia tune in to MasterChef each week. By hosting MasterChef in Queensland, prospective tourists will have beautiful images of our state beamed into their living rooms,” she said. Maleny Commerce president Nicole Hilton said it was wonderful for our local area to be a part of the production and, with Maleny known for its many award-winning dairy products and wedding venues, it seemed like a perfect marriage of what the area was recognised for. If you are reading this before the show goes to air on June 4 make sure you tune in at 7.30pm to see the contestants cooking up a storm in the kitchens at The Old Dairy.

Local music teacher Sarah Minns was thrilled with the recent launch of the Glasshouse Community Choir, which had an incredible start with a turnout of 33 people for the first choir gathering on Wednesday, May 22. Sarah said it was wonderful to see a broad mix of people turn up. “I was so chuffed with the turnout. It was a fun night and everyone seemed to be smiling,” she said. “We had a real spread of ages from 17 to around 80 years old and a mix of men and women. We even had a guitarist come out of the woodwork and he's offered to play at some of our practises, which is fantastic,” Sarah said. The night featured a variety of songs chosen to appeal to a cross section of tastes. They included Edelweiss (from ‘The Sound of Music’), For the Longest Time (Billy Joel), When You Say Nothing at All (Ronan Keating), Shallow (Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga from ‘A Star is Born’), Put a Little Love in Your Heart (Annie Lennox style), Loch Lomond (traditional) and Let it Be (Beatles). Sarah’s plan is to start working on some harmonies to take advantage of the vocal range of the participants and to look at songs in a bit more detail. She hopes that the momentum continues for this wonderful community choir initiative and is keen to attract a few more instrumentalists to accompany them. The community choir is open to everyone - young, middle-aged and older adults alike. There is no need for participants to read music or to have previous experience. The group meets weekly on Wednesday evenings at the Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre from 6.30-7.45pm. There will be no cost to participate and a variety of music styles will be explored to suit the group as it evolves. New members are welcome to just turn up on a Wednesday evening.

The power of a great musical arrangement Having been a composer all my life, I have a special affinity with arranging, which is taking a piece of music, generally in its barest form, and realising its full potential by adding various instruments and organising them to achieve a maximum effect. It is also known as instrumenting or orchestrating. It is an intriguing art - first year composition students cut their teeth on orchestrating the solo works of Ravel and Bach, for example, for any range of instruments. The form it takes for me today also assumes a production role as I generally take a song, for which only a verse and chorus might exist - usually played on guitar, and I will add parts - keyboards, bass, drums, other guitars and strings, for example, and record the finished product. It can be very satisfying, especially if the song is a good one. One tends to have favourite artists and albums, and I vacillate from one to the other, but an act I often come back to is The Civil Wars, both for the quality of their performances and their arrangements. The producer of their albums is the multi-instrumentalist singer-songwriter Charlie Peacock and he was an essential part of the studio sound they created. He noted that his role was to support the power and passion of their acoustic performances with the addition of atmospheric ambiences. For most arrangers this wouldn’t be enough but Peacock, assuming more of a producer’s role, realises a superb palette with his subtle additions. Health & Wellbeing Community benefit at work Maleny IGA’s Rob Outridge recently saw first-hand the benefits from funds provided by the store’s Community Benefit Club to the Maleny Hospital. The hospital bought five iPads in protective cases, as well as three wireless headphones and five charging cables to provide technology-based rehabilitation for patients. Hospital social worker Chantal Fichera thanked Rob for IGA’s generosity and explained the positive benefits that the iPads had on patients’ everyday clinical care, particularly in relation to social connectedness. Maleny Hospital provides both acute and restorative long-term care to patients with movement disorders, and decreased physical and cognitive function due to stroke, terminal illness and chronic disease. Quite often patients need to stay in the hospital for extended periods away from the community where they and their family live, so having access to technology that allows them to stay in contact can

Chantal explained that for a patient who is a long way from home being able to face-time their son or daughter or even see that their pets are being well looked after can make a difference. “Having access to your favourite music and a pair of headphones can sometimes give patients a little bit of normalcy and control over some part of the day as a patient,” she said. Ultimately the iPads can improve the quality of life for the long-term patients and empower them to play an active role in their recovery. Rob explained that since the Community Benefit Club was established the Maleny Hospital, through Wishlist, had been the highest beneficiary. “To date, more than $75,000 has been allocated from the club for use by the hospital and there is currently a significant amount waiting for suitable projects to be developed for its use,” he said.

Celebrating Italian culture

Fresca Market & Café at Glass House Mountains played host to the local celebration of Festa della Repubblica, or Italy’s Republic Day, last Sunday, June 2. It celebrates the day Italians voted to abolish the monarchy in 1946 so their country could become a republic and is a public holiday in Italy. While I am not sure if many of those celebrating at Glass House Mountains were aware of the historical significance of the day, there was definitely plenty of excitement among all who attended the day to participate in Run Queensland’s Gladiator trail run event. The run took off from the Coliseum (Fresca) and took participants on an 8km or 15km trail through the local forestry. For those brave enough to do the longer run, they also took on the Herculean battle with Wild Horse Mountain. The team from Fresca, who have recently celebrated their first anniversary, absolutely outdid themselves with creating a great Italian vibe on the day. The team already has a great reputation with the locals for their wonderful coffee and the tasty traditional sweets they make onsite and the delicious gelato they sell. However, the Gladiator was the first major event they had hosted and they pulled out all stops to partner with local business Run Queensland. They even brought in a wood-fired pizza oven for the day! Thanks for sharing and for the fun!

The 1920 show was visited by intrepid travellers who drove their motor vehicles from Nambour and Tewantin. A century after the first show the motor trip to the show will be re-enacted by vehicles of the era. As well as National Rodeo Association events, show jumping and other horse events, the show also provides the entertaining spectacle of wood chopping, chainsaw ripping, pig racing and sideshows. Picture perfect garden in Maleny Gardening on the Edge is on this weekend (June 8-9) and you’d be a crackpot not to make the pleasant trip to Maleny to see one or all six open gardens, as well as the garden expo and markets at the Maleny Showgrounds. To whet the whistle, we had a sneak peek at one of the open gardens owned by June and Bill Dunn, on the outskirts of Maleny. June and Bill bought the two-and-a-half-acre property seven years ago, moving from a 398m2 block in Clayfield. Consequently, their gardening

By Greg Brown experience was rather restricted spatially and so were the garden tools they possessed. Bill, an engineer by trade, soon found he had to upscale to larger mowers and trimmers and found that things like chainsaws and prayers became necessary as well. “The garden had a good framework,” Bill said. “It just needed some planning and gradual changes to bring it to what we were looking for.” So, over those seven years the gardens have been transformed somewhat with three main levels created, connected via a network of tracks and pathways, all engineered so a mower and trailer can gain access, and the sloping trails have handrails and steps where needed. In creating the colourful and diverse gardens, June and Bill have chosen plants that give vertical structure but also provide ground coverage, which means there is less weeding and mulching to be done. “It does mean more pruning but that’s OK as it’s off the ground and so easier to handle than being down on your knees weeding,” Bill said. The broader landscape of the area is just beautiful, with sweeping views from most of the garden down across the valley to Baroon Pocket Dam and then up to Montville, with emerald green paddocks and rainforest patches between.

You can’t help but be drawn to gaze out across this vista as you listen to the frogs and birds calling in the distance. It’s a perfect use of the ‘borrowed landscape’ to extend your garden experience without having to do anything. June finds the whole garden relaxing and enjoyable. “I adore the front entrance and yard,” she said. “The birch trees work well as do the mass plantings of things like agapanthus, hardenbergia and bromeliads. “I’m so happy being in the front gardens. They just bring me so much joy.” And you can’t ask more of a garden than that. Mel Augustine from Glass House Mountains travelled to Japan in early May to visit and photograph some of the most spectacular gardens they have on show at this time of the year. Over a two-week period, Mel visited the world famous Kawachi Wisteria Garden, the Nokonoshima Island flower park and Shibazakura Festival near Mt Fuji. Mel said that planning the trip herself was easy using online searches and travel apps. Her top tip for people wanting to see the wisteria garden is to time it for late in the flowering season when there won’t be the crazy crowds that are there earlier in the season. Emu-foot Cullen tenax This beautiful plant is a herb. It grows to about 50cm in height. It is weak-stemmed, prostrate or scrambling and is excellent for growing over rocky outcrops or along elevated garden edges. It has a divided leaf to 10cm across. For most of the year it has purple 5mm flowers in spikes to 10cm on a long stalk and black fruit to 1mm. Emu-foot is local to our region and grows in all soil types. Most importantly it is a host plant for the chequered swallowtail butterfly. We have stock available now at our nursery for $2.50 per tube.

Glasshouse Country Bowls Club

Students at Beerburrum State School recently took part in their annual athletics carnival. The day began with teams warming up their team spirit for fierce competition, with Norfolk, Bongaree and Flinders performing their war cries. The events began with all ages taking part in sprints from 60m-200m followed by other major

events in high jump and long jump. The day was enjoyed by teachers, parents, families and students, with all getting involved in events such as house captain versus parents versus teachers in the very serious horsey noodle relay race. The egg and spoon, bean bag toss and the vortex scoop ball throw took lots of concentration and effort with lots of laughs.

Maleny Bowls Club Contributed by Graeme Glover As the cold weather set in this week a few less were found on the green. The dreaded flu rolled in and caught a number by surprise but all are on the mend now. Monthly pairs was another great afternoon of bowls and was won by our visitors from Caboolture Lakes. Well done visitors for supporting our monthly event. A reminder to all about the earlier start to work better for our visitors who need to travel distances to play. The willingness of all hinterland bowlers who travel regularly to support each other and make bowls clubs like ours vibrant is great. Wednesday night saw a pairs competition run and won by the skill of a lucky draw. A reminder to all to get teams ready for the pending kick off of the next competition. See Miles Allen to

Sport The Range Croquet Club Contributed by Ken Barker Good weather conditions on Thursday saw entertaining play on the lawn. Vince Carbery and Bev Sockhill paired up for two games of golf against Sally Adams and Wallace Roy beating them 7–3 and 7–5. After Vince left, a threesome was played with Wallace scoring 7, Sally 4 and Bev 4. On lawn two, Ken Barker played against a pair of Kath Smith and Helen Andrews scoring 17 to their 9. On the weekend Ken played in the Queensland second division championships at Bundaberg, winning two games of five. Bundaberg were great hosts and the tournament ran smoothly with Yuni Rowell from Southport club with a picket fence score of five wins from five games claiming the title. On Sunday two golf threesomes were played with Wallace scoring 5 and 5, Gary Winter scoring 4 and 3, and Brenda Winter 4 and 4. In association croquet, Stuart Craig and Kath teamed up to beat Frances Harper and Helen 7–6 while, in another game Nick Smith played brilliantly to score 17 to Vince’s 7. Coaching for beginners and others is available on the picturesque lawns at the bottom of the Maleny Showgrounds on Saturdays from 8-10 am. The team of Libby Howlett, Annie Stewart, Stacey English and Jo Williams did their best but with an injury to Jo we had to forfeit the last set. With only three matches left there are three points separating seven teams. So fingers crossed we make it to the top two. Whistlers played at Maroochydore against the Blue Belles. It was cold and windy at the start and we needed a good warm up. We had an enjoyable day with a good win. Score was 45-26 games, 6-2 sets.
