So what did you think of the photo on our front cover this week? Generally we make it a rule that the front cover features someone’s (at least one, sometimes more) face, and generally that someone is a human – and mostly they feature a big happy smile. So with Sculpture on the Edge being installed last week in the beautiful surroundings at Spicers Tamarind Retreat at Maleny, we couldn’t go past this cheeky fella. I am not actually someone who always gets the subtleties of art, the understanding of the meaning that is constructed by the artist – sadly I just fall into the category of knowing what I like. When I heard that Kenilworth artist Elli Schlunke, who was the winner of the 2015 People’s Choice Award for her work ‘Mammuthus’, was creating a ‘Starey Haiiry Coo’ sculpture (which I translated as Scottish for a Hairy Cow called Starey), I had a good feeling. Actually in the end we had photos of quite a few rather interesting creatures that are all part of this year’s event, and it was a rather tough choice. The works will be on display until October 25, so if you would like to go and see Starey Haiiry Coo in real life, along with some other great pieces, make sure you head along – and don’t forget to enter your favourite into the People’s Choice Award. Cover Story Sculptures are now on the edge Last week the grounds at Spicers Retreat in Maleny were abuzz with creative energy with over 30 artists installing 40 works selected as finalists in this year’s Sculptures on the Edge. The finalists are vying for $9,000 in prize money this year, with the coveted first prize of $5,000 once again being sponsored by Spicers Tamarind Retreat. Arts Connect Inc has been organising the event since 2010 and, through the wonderful relationship they have developed with Spicers and the support from local businesses and the Sunshine Coast Council, it has become a signature arts event for the Sunshine Coast. The event will be officially opened on Thursday and the winning artists will be announced for all categories, except the People’s Choice which will not be decided until the end of the exhibition. The exhibition will be open from 9am to 5pm each day until October 25. Entry is free and you also have the opportunity to vote for your favourite entry in the People’s Choice award. For the first time, the event includes ‘Dinner with the Stars’ to be held on Sunday, October 15. As the sun goes down guests will be able to wander the tranquil grounds, enjoying canapes and beverages, whilst admiring the sculptures. This will be followed by a Thai banquet prepared by The Tamarind Head Chef, Dan Jarrett, along with matching wines.

Contributed by Chris Bell After four years of selfless service to the Glasshouse Country community, Pastor Margaret Niethe is retiring. Pastor Margaret has touched many lives within the local community as well as the church communities. She used her many skills within the Ministers’ Fraternal, dressing up and bringing her family to participate as shepherds in the Beerwah Carols by Candlelight each year, organising the Peachester Carol Services, participating in the chaplaincy fundraising concerts, barefoot bowls and golf days as well as helping many to transition into care accommodation. Margaret has a passion for all people, especially children, and loved to participate in the Uniting Church's Kids’ Club and Playgroup. Last year Margaret also joined the board of Glasshouse Country Care and recently led a mission trip to Gaba Gaba Village in PNG. Margaret and her late husband Paul endeared themselves to the local community as well as
the church community, participating whole heartedly and giving generously and selflessly of themselves under sometimes very difficult health and family circumstances. We will miss Pastor Margaret’s meaningful messages, decorative flair, management skills and her colourful stilt high heel shoes, and thank her most sincerely for the extra miles she walked with us. Members of the community are invited to attend Pastor Margaret's final preaching service and presentation on Sunday, October 15 from 8.25am and the official Synod/Presbytery Farewell will be on Sunday November 12 from 2.30pm at the Uniting Church in Twin Peaks Drive, Beerwah.
Speed limit reduced on Caloundra Road The speed limit will be reduced on Caloundra Road between Bellvista Boulevard and the Bells Creek Arterial/Caloundra-Mooloolaba Road roundabouts. Main Roads and Road Safety Minister Mark Bailey said the speed limit will be reduced from 80kph to 70kph on this 2.5km section of Caloundra Road following a recent speed limit review.
“As with all speed limit reviews, a number of factors were considered as part of the review, including the crash history, traffic volumes and prevailing speeds,” he said. Mr Bailey said the new speed limit signage is expected to be installed in October once current roadworks on Caloundra Road are complete.

Landsborough businesses band together The plan to close the Landsborough rail crossing and replace it with a road overpass has spurred Landsborough businesses into action. The bypass, forming part of the State Government’s rail duplication preparations, has raised concerns with local business people about the dislocation that would be created... similar to that experienced at Beerwah. To make their voices more robust, a Landsborough business subcommittee has formed under the umbrella of the Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce and their first public meeting was held at the Landsborough Hall last Wednesday. Landsborough businesses were invited to hear subcommittee members Tim Fitzpatrick (Landsborough Chemist) and Terry Morrow (Landsborough Hotel) set out their agenda. “The overpass plans were a call to action for Landsborough businesses,” said Tim, who is also the Chair of the subcommittee. “The subcommittee was formed – with the guiding hand of State Member Mark McArdle – to look at ways to focus our concerns and to utilise the opportunity to reinvigorate the Landsborough business community. “To help in our submissions, we will be engaging a roads and traffic engineer to provide professional advice on the State Government plans and assessment of possible alternative options.” Division 1 Councillor Rick Baberowski was keen for businesses to know that Sunshine Coast Council is behind them.
“From a personal and a council point of view, we made submissions that the flyover designs were not the best outcome for Landsborough,” he explained. “As well, council has been holding back on commencing the urgently needed master planning process for Landsborough, awaiting the outcomes of the rail duplication and flyover designs. “But we can’t wait any longer... and we are now going ahead with starting the master planning process but making sure that there is flexibility in the framework to allow for whatever outcome State Government finally agree upon.” According to Cr Baberowski, the master planning will be similar to that undertaken for Beerwah, with a budget of around $150,000 for the planning stage. “I am hoping that the community consultations will begin sometime from February next year,” he said. “In the meantime, I would encourage everyone to lobby the State Election candidates and have them firmly commit to allocating the funding and finally making the rail duplication a reality.” Although the establishment focus for the Landsborough subcommittee was the rail duplication and overpass, they are working on other issues as well. “Issues to do with NBN, mobile phone coverage and general business revitalisation have been raised with us and will be looked at as well,” said Tim. Glasshouse Country Chamber Of Commerce President Ursula Starkovsky explained that,
as part of the chamber, businesses have more capacity to make positive changes “As a part of the Chamber of Commerce, the subcommittee member businesses have access to a broad support and information network. “An example is the CCTV cameras in our local towns,” she said. “The chamber was granted federal money to install cameras – nine are in Landsborough. “Maintenance of the CCTV system is undertaken by the chamber from membership fees – so the more businesses who become active members, the better we are able to maintain the cameras through the town.” To show the chamber’s commitment to Landsborough, every third monthly chamber meeting will now be held in Landsborough, with the next meeting being October 17 at Our Country Kitchen. Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson last week officially opened ‘The Newsmakers’ exhibition at the Landsborough Museum. The exhibition celebrates the 50 years since the naming of the Sunshine Coast and the region’s stories that made the local and national news. Rosey Field, former president of the Landsborough Historical Society, pointed out the significance of the exhibition being located at the Landsborough Museum, as it was the building that housed the Landsborough Shire Council when the announcement of the naming of the ‘Sunshine Coast’ was made in 1967. The exhibition explores the significant and sometimes strange stories that have captured headlines over the past 50 years, showcasing both the relaxed lifestyle and adventurous spirit of the Sunshine Coast. Mr Jamieson spoke of the significance of the exhibition in bringing together both the history and soul of our community, featuring stories

in profileJudy Tomlinson GC&M News recently caught up with Judy Tomlinson, President of Celebrate Glasshouse Country and Coordinator of the Beerwah Street Party, to find out a little more about how the Street Party was born and what is happening this year. Like many enthusiastic Sunshine Coasters, Judy Tomlinson was originally from Victoria, and had also lived and worked in NSW before making one of the best decisions of her life – to make Maroochydore on the Sunshine Coast her home in the late 1990s. Over the next decade or so, Judy said that with the growth and change that had come to Maroochydore they decided to start a search for somewhere a little quieter and relaxed to move to. With this in mind Judy started taking a keener interest when visiting the Hinterland townships, knowing she would like to live somewhere that still had a country feel with a sense of community. So it’s not surprising that five years ago they made the move to the beautiful town of Peachester. On initially moving to the area Judy joined the Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce with the idea of looking at what business opportunities were here and to start to create business networks in the area. At the same time the huge project of redeveloping Beerwah's business centre was making headway and the local Sunshine Coast councillor, Rick Baberowski, was keen to recruit local business and community members into working on the Street Party planned as the celebration of the project’s completion in October 2014. Being new to the area and seeing what a great opportunity it was, Judy jumped at the chance to get involved with making the street party a really
successful event. From day one Judy was passionate about the area and was keen to become a part of the local community, and to be able to contribute to reminding people what a great place it is to live. The first year of the event, council had a one off budget allocation to cover the costs associated with the event as well as the many staff hours that went into making it such a huge community event. Following on from the momentum created by the Council driven and funded event, and the enthusiasm from the thousands of locals who attended the street party, a decision was made by a number of dedicated community members in 2015 to establish Celebrate Beerwah Inc, (more recently named Celebrate Glasshouse Country) with one of their goals to source the funds, gather the volunteers and organise an even better street party in the October of 2015. Judy took on the role of president of the committee that was made up of people who were involved with the first street party and others who enjoyed the event so much they wanted to become involved. The second year the event ran was another massive success, with a number of local businesses kicking in the required sponsorship of the significant running cost associated with an event this size. Judy said it was great to be able to work with so many local community groups, businesses, schools and individuals who happily volunteered their time and talents to make the whole event happen. However in 2016, Judy faced some significant health concerns, and while she was determined to
continue the street party tradition, she needed to give her full focus to her health and, after much discussion and negotiation with the committee, a decision was made to take a year off the event and to refocus their efforts on 2017! Judy and her team have been working hard to create a 2017 Street Party, to be run on Friday October 20 between 4pm and 9pm, which they hope will once again highlight the unique and festive spirit of the broader Glasshouse Region. This year Judy has been really pleased with the Beerwah Hotel’s on-going commitment to being a major sponsor of the event, and she has been blown away by the efforts of the management of Beerwah Village / Beerwah Marketplace for their commitment to supporting the success of the event and she can’t wait to see Simpson Street come alive with laughter, fun, entertainment and a great vibe harnessing that great community spirit of a country town. However, like all big events, one of the critical elements is also having enough hands on the day for set up, clean up and pull down – so she would be grateful for anyone who would be happy to volunteer a couple of hours of their time. Interactive art workshops As part of the Recollections Landsborough project, eight local artists will be offering interactive workshops to be held at Landsborough School of Arts Memorial Hall throughout October to early November. On Friday October 13, Glass House Mountains artist Neville Field Neville Field will present a full day workshop exploring Multi-Coloured Reduction Linoprinting. Neville has been greatly influenced by Indigenous artists and will be sharing his extensive knowledge of lino printmaking at this hands-on workshop. Sir Walter Burnett
Last Thursday, October 6, marked 12 months since the passing of Maleny stalwart Sir Walter Burnett at age 95. Sir Walter grew up in Maleny where his parents owned the Maleny Hotel and on his 21st birthday he was given the block of land opposite the pub which he donated to the RSL. He did his primary schooling in Maleny then went to Brisbane and attended Churchie where he broke many swimming and rowing records. He then went to Pharmacy College and started work in New Farm where he met his wife to be, Lady Mabel Burnett. In 1945 Sir Walter bought the Maleny Newsagency and combined the chemist shop and for many years he and Lady Burnett worked tirelessly in their business. In 1967 Sir Walter sold the newsagency and built a new modern pharmacy right next to his beloved newsagency, and the following year, identifying the need for a chemist shop in Beerwah, they opened a small shop in Simpson Street. Sir Walter was heavily involved in the Maleny community, being a Past President and Patron of the Maleny Show, Past President of the Maleny

Women in farming workshops
It’s a fete, let’s celebrate!
Women in farm businesses are being encouraged to recognise and develop their leadership potential through a series of free workshops being hosted by the Queensland Farmers’ Federation (QFF) in October. The workshops will look at a range of leadership opportunities where women could increase their impact and will provide useful resources to help them move ahead in business and beyond. Participants will hear from women who have successfully taken on leadership roles in rural communities and industry organisations. Jess Fealy, a Mareeba mango and avocado grower and Queensland finalist in the 2017 Rural Women’s Awards, will share strategies she has used to build networks, including harnessing the power of social media. QFF President Stuart Armitage said this was a positive initiative aimed at building greater opportunities for women in agriculture. “We are all aware of the integral and important role women already play in Queensland agriculture. The Jess Fealy workshops are about strengthening their confidence as business leaders and bringing their talents, ideas and passion to the forefront,” Mr Armitage said. “It is hoped that workshop participants will go home with a clearer focus on their personal goals, fired up to take on their next challenge and with a good road map of the networks, resources and assistance available to them.” The workshops will help QFF prepare recommendations for the best way forward for leadership development for women in Queensland’s agricultural sector. Residents can help celebrate Maleny Soldiers Memorial Hospital’s 30th anniversary next month. On October 14, staff and Maleny Soldiers Memorial Hospital Auxiliary members will host a fete to celebrate 30 years since the hospital was opened at its current location. The hospital, originally built as a memorial to those who took part in World War 1, was officially opened as a private hospital on October 21, 1920, and gazetted as a general public hospital on May 21, 1921. The original Maleny Soldiers Memorial Hospital served the community until a new facility was built across the road and was officially opened on October 17, 1987, with the old building being removed and the old site used as the new Maleny Ambulance Station. Acting Director of Nursing Glennis McAlpine said the fete was an opportunity to welcome the community and help raise funds for the Hospital Auxiliary. “It’s also an opportunity for us to show our proud history in this community,” she said. The community event will feature food stalls, entertainment, a Maleny’s Got Talent competition (please phone 5420 5025 to register), games and fun activities for children, health services displays, and 'Back to Maleny – Born in Maleny' (a competition for all those born in Maleny Hospital). “It’s going to be a great day and I hope you’ll all come out to support our hospital and our auxiliary,” Ms McAlpine said “The auxiliary is tireless in its fundraising activities which support the purchase of new equipment for the hospital. “We are also fortunate to have very active community groups who work with our auxiliary to benefit us. “Over the past 30 years, many items of equipment have been purchased thanks to the kind donations and fundraising activities of the community, Maleny Hospital Auxiliary and local community clubs.” Maleny Fete is being held on Saturday, October 14 from 11am to 4pm at Maleny Soldiers Memorial Hospital, 17 Bean Street, Maleny.

Starting school is such a milestone for both prep students and parents. Knowing that your child is happy and confident about starting school is a big emotional weight taken off the shoulders of parents, carers and children. Peachester State School will be holding a series of three Welcome Mornings for Prep Peachester student Adison S helps 2018 Students, designed Darby S with buddy reading to build confidence, start friendships and for children to gain a familiar picture of what ‘big school’ is going to be like. Often after three days at big school, our future preppies have met children in other grades, relaxed and, most importantly, had fun. This helps to realise that our small school is not so big and scary. Another great advantage in coming along to all three sessions is for parents to meet other parents, swap numbers and have the chance to arrange play dates during the holidays before school starts. It is such an advantage when children (and parents) have someone they know will be there on that first day, before the tissues come out. Our Welcome Mornings will be on Wednesday mornings between 9.30am and 10.50am during October: on the 11th which will be an Information Session, on the 18th for outside play activities, and on the 25th for inside play activities. Fun run a runaway success
Contributed by Kylie Merola Landsborough State School’s fun run brought a kaleidoscope of colours to the school oval on the last day of Term 3. The event, known as Tough ‘Borough, is held each year as a fundraiser for the school’s P&C Association. It was a fantastic day filled with smiles, laughter, colour, mud, foam and most of all, lots and lots of fun! In the lead up to the event students rounded up sponsorships and donations from their families, friends and members of the community. This year, Landsborough students were able to raise more than $14,000, which is a record-amount in the five year history of Tough ‘Borough. The money raised will be used to purchase a selection of marquees which will provide essential shelter for students at sports carnivals, swimming carnivals and other school events. Thank you to all the participants, helpers and local businesses and sponsors who made this year’s event such a great success and an amazing day for all involved.

This Saturday, October 7, the Beerwah Kindy will be throwing open their doors between 9.30am and 11.30am and they invite families to come along to experience kindy first hand. Beerwah Kindy is a community based, not for profit association providing a nurturing and educational experience for children in the year before Prep. They have a long standing reputation for providing high quality early childhood education and the kindy is a place where children and families can learn, grow and unite. Kindergarten teacher Beccy said, "The Open Day is the perfect opportunity for children and parents to meet the teachers and see why our Kindy was rated ‘Exceeding’ across all seven areas of the National Quality Standards. “Enrolment enquiries for 2018 and future years can be made,” she said. Jack attack and bowls
Maleny Bowls Club isn’t just for players who are young at heart – they have set up a special session for the younger members of the community. Club Chairman Graeme Glover said he is really pleased that the club has been running a bowling program for primary and junior high school age children each Saturday morning from 9.30am to 11am. “The Jack Attack and bowls program introduces students to bowling skills and they generally quickly progress to using the full-size bowls,” he said. “We also like to encourage the kids’ parents to participate as well.” The cost is only $3 and it includes all bowls, instruction, a bottle of water and a fresh fruit snack – so just come along. From October 14, with the weather warming up, the program will shift to a 5pm start.
Musical play
As part of the First 5 Forever initiative, parents and their toddlers are invited to come along to their local library and enjoy a range of stimulating play-based music activities including singing, movement, instrument play and stories. The sessions, suitable for 0 - 5 years, will run at the Beerwah Library on Monday October 9 from 9.30am - 10.30am and at the Maleny Library on Monday October 23 from 9.30am - 10.30am. Living - Music Bach, the Beatles and beyond
The Sunshine Coast Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Adrian King, is coming to Maleny to perform at the Maleny Community Centre on Sunday October 29 from 2pm. Festival of Small Halls comes to Eudlo
Now in its fifth year, the Festival of Small Halls tour will take in 20 regional towns across Queensland and New South Wales before moving on to Victoria and Tasmania in the New Year. Starting in Wyreema in November, the tour will finish at Eudlo Hall on Sunday December 17. Music Today Celebrating Leonard Cohen
As I write this article I am celebrating Leonard Cohen’s birth – 83 years ago on September 21, 1934, he was born; and, sadly his life, as we lost Leonard to this world on November 7 last year. I was lucky to see Leonard in concert in 2013 – it was one of the highlights of my musical experience. For some his music is too dark, but that was always his intent. It did take me years to fully appreciate what he was doing as an artist, so it doesn’t surprise me that he remains an enigma for others. The popular success of a few numbers and the interpretations other singers have done of his work – KD Lang and Jeff Buckley are prime examples with their very different readings of Hallelujah – have of course made him one of the most well-known of Canada’s long list of great musicians. It was as a poet that Cohen arrived on the public scene in the early 60s, but the lure of folk music in the mid 60s was too strong and song writing became his primary creative outlet. His rich, deep voice, poignant lyrics and the beautiful melodic flow of his songs brought with it enormous success, and his constant touring in the 70s only assisted the building of a huge career. Cohen retired from public life in 1995, which, aged 60, would seem a reasonable thing for a performing song writer to do, but it was to the austere lifestyle of a Buddhist retreat that he went for the next 6 years – for him an essential step in his spiritual self-development. However, he later discovered his retirement fund had been systematically robbed by his former manager, leaving him with no choice but go back to work! He started releasing albums again and, following their success, a major world tour which began in 2008 and ended 387 shows later in 2013. Enjoying his concert in 2013, I was amazed at how a 79 year old man could perform for three hours with such humility and more than total commitment – he actually ran on and off the stage for the last hour of encores! He suffered extreme spine and back problems for the last three years of his life, which he describes as being “confined to barracks” and so, aided by medicinal cannabis, recorded his vocals for the albums he was making in his loungeroom, while the rest of his band recorded in the studio. The quality of song writing remains to the end and his dark humour is as evident in the last songs as it was in the first, more than 50 years earlier. Rest in peace Leonard, you remain an inspiration for creative artists the world over. Michael has a recording studio in Peachester. You Said It Busting congestion to Brisbane
Even if you don’t undertake the daily commute to Brisbane, you’ve no doubt been caught time and time again on the Bruce Highway car park. Perhaps there’s been an accident on the Bruce and with traffic seeking solace on Steve Irwin Way you’ve been left stranded and unable to leave your street. And then there’s the ongoing ‘Rail Fail’ saga. So what’s the solution – how do we bust the Brisbanebound congestion? Is it as simple as adding another lane to the Bruce Highway? Is it upgrading Steve Irwin Way? Is it finally completing the duplication of the Sunshine Coast Rail Line? I believe Is it a combination of, or indeed all of, the above. I’ve stood alongside my Sunshine Coast Federal colleagues and called for, and now applauded, the extra funding to widen the Bruce Highway between Caboolture and Caloundra – but that alone is not enough. Similarly, if all we do is duplicate the rail line – albeit a vital project for the Coast commuters – and add 150 more services weekly, we still aren’t addressing those travellers who don’t use rail. That’s why I think we also need to look at identifying and building alternate routes like Steve Irwin Way. And why we need to explore other public transport solutions such as a Very Fast Train or, indeed, new technology such as the HyperLoop currently being trialled in California. So, what do you think? Do we put all our eggs in one basket – the Bruce? Or do we spread the load by investing in public transport and alternative routes? I believe we need to spread the load – look at the Bruce, fix the rail, improve Steve Irwin Way and prepare for technologies of the future. Fire on Steve Irwin Way
When the fire broke out on the western side of Steve Irwin Way at Glass House Mountains on Wednesday, September 16 the westerly wind was blowing at some 50-plus knots when the Rural Fire Crew arrived with a couple of vehicles to try to extinguish the fire. I was extremely concerned that the paddock between Steve Irwin Way and our home had not been slashed for some two years and was loaded with fuel. Within a very short time my worst fears were realised when the fire crossed the road and ignited the paddock, with our home directly in its path. There were flames three to four metres high rapidly heading towards our house. Thankfully the Rural Fire Brigade shifted their focus to saving our home which was clearly in imminent danger.

I cannot give enough praise to these people who drove their vehicles into the adjacent property between the rapidly advancing fire and our home, putting their own lives at risk to save our house. There is no doubt in my mind that our home is still here because of these people. I must also thank a number of the local police who worked under extremely difficult conditions, helping shift our animals to safety and manning the garden hoses to wet down the side of our house closest to the fire, putting their own lives in danger. They helped my wife and myself to safety and returned to help save our house. The fire was finally extinguished, much to my surprise. I thought our home was gone for sure. The police also contacted the Ambulance because my wife, who has a heart condition, was suffering breathing difficulties, and the paramedic helped her to safety at the neighbours. Is it fair?
I would like to share my thoughts on recent comments in GC&M News regarding transport and underground waste disposal. Put quite simply, Council/Unity Water is taking pride in announcing that they are the first in Australia to commence putting in this new disposal system. Yet, they do not at the same time mention, particularly to State Government, that there are many properties, designated as urban, which are not on mains sewerage, and Council/Unity Water, are not prepared to supply sewer pick-up facilities to many of these properties. Where are the priorities? I understand this was one of the goals of the 2004 SCRC area plan – if not, why not now? Also our side of the highway has little if any council provided transport. Glass House has none. While it is understood that the efforts made were not taken up, this mainly was because everyone is forced to have their own transport or access to. We still have to pay the Transport Levy. To add insult to injury, this has now more or less trebled, to pay for light rail along the coast. Fair? I think not. A lovely lady from Bank of Queensland graciously provided tea and biscuits each morning for an appreciative volunteer. Thank you to the Laurel Club member and Buck’s Bakery at Landsborough where Desley Hooker raised $1,073 through her own efforts. Mary Hogan, who regardless of her own health problems, provided words of cheer to our Beerwah supporters. Many of these people have close association with members of the Australian Defence Force whilst others, both young and old, were assisted educationally by Legacy. It was a delight to have a shopper come along offering her shopping trolley as a means of transport for a table, chairs and accoutrements to be shifted from one sales point to another. An ex-serviceman happily helped the volunteer at Woolworths to set up her stall, giving a substantial donation and saying he was proud to have been a serving member of the ADF. Mavis Robb Peachester
What the?
It appears that the same clowns that brought us the Beerwah Marketplace extension have been let loose again. After providing patrons with a first class car park layout that oozes accessibility and space, a footpath into a post (since rectified), and direct connectivity to the ‘Village’ from the ‘Marketplace’ via a push chair friendly footpath over a kerb and grass, this time the brains trust have provided us with 1987 shade cloth car ports instead of 2017 solar panel covered car ports. However, now that we are able to leave our kids and dogs in the car whilst going to the bottle shop, at least they have something to look at. Now in fairness to the contractor who may not have quoted for it, and I don’t mean to sound harsh, but they left the bloody trees underneath! At what point, whilst threading new steelwork through branches, did it occur to someone that trees do indeed grow and at some point they will push further against the shade cloth than they already are? Could you use your home equity to buy an investment property? If you own a property and have been paying off the mortgage, it could be time to think about taking the next step on the property ladder – investment. For many Australians, an investment property is a fantastic way to generate extra income and secure a long-term asset. Even so, getting a deposit together while paying off a mortgage on the home you live in can be tricky. That’s where equity comes in handy, and in this article we’ll look at exactly what equity is, and how you can use it to buy an investment property. What is home equity? To put it simply, home equity is the difference between the value of a property and 16
how much debt is owed on it. For example, if your property is worth $500,000 and you still have half of that to pay off on your loan, your home equity would be $250,000. You might think this equity is tied up until you pay off the entire mortgage. In fact, you can use it for all sorts of things, including starting a business, buying a car, going on holiday or purchasing an investment property. Of course, you can’t use all your home equity. Instead, it’s usually split into ‘total’ equity and ‘useable’ equity, with the latter being about 80 per cent of your total. This useable equity is what you have to play with, and banks
will use this as security when you take out a loan on an investment property. Using equity to buy an investment property Having home equity doesn’t always guarantee that you’ll receive a loan for an investment property. Lenders will also consider your age, income and debts, so it’s worth seeking advice as to whether you’ll be eligible for a loan. If you do get approved, there are all sorts of benefits to using your home equity as security. First and foremost, you won’t have to save for a deposit if you’ve built up enough equity. You’ll also be able to save on Lender’s Mortgage Insurance (LMI). This is

Division 1 - Sunshine Coast Newsmakers Exhibition
Did you know the Sunshine Coast was originally called the Near North Coast? Or, that four men and a cat travelled from Ecuador to the Sunshine Coast on a man-made raft? Or, that in 1967 a three-bedroom house in Kawana Waters cost $9,700? These stories and more are currently on display in the Newsmakers Exhibition at the Landsborough Museum as part of the 50th Anniversary of the Naming of the Sunshine Coast celebrations. I recently joined the mayor to officially open the exhibition. This is a fantastic addition to the visitor experience at the Landsborough Museum and it’s particularly pleasing that a local company was used to assist with the design and installation of the exhibition. The exhibition will run until September 2018 and features a range of displays highlighting notable events that have occurred on the Sunshine Coast over the past 50 years – I encourage you all to visit!

Some relief for residents facing water shortages, in that council has provided a list of water refill points to private property residents for small domestic quantities of water. Council is working with commercial providers to determine water supply point issues for the worst affected areas and will continue to work in close partnership with Unitywater. Residents living on water tanks are encouraged to take advantage of the refill stations and to also take ongoing action to preserve their current supplies. State Member for Caloundra 24/7 Urgent Care Centre at Caloundra Hospital
There are some important facts to consider in the discussion of why our community needs the Urgent Care Centre at Caloundra Hospital to operate 24/7. Firstly, we know that ramping is taking place at the new Kawana Hospital, which is when an ambulance must wait with a patient outside of the ED because there is not enough room to move that patient inside the ED for treatment. Queensland Health data shows that one in four people who are transported to Kawana ED by ambulance wait on a trolley for longer than the recommended 30 minutes. Additionally in June, 30% of people also had to wait more than four hours to get to a bed at Kawana. As I have always said, the new hospital will treat the most seriously ill and injured but we are already seeing the signs that Kawana is not ready to handle the sheer volume of patients coming through the door while our other facilities, like the Caloundra Urgent Care Centre, are sitting empty at night. Let’s better support our hard working nurses and other medical staff by allowing Caloundra to help take the pressure off Kawana for the less seriously ill or injured. Open the Urgent Care Centre 24/7 for us the residents. That makes sense.
Ewen Maddock Dam community tour
In July of this year, concerns were raised about the safety of the Ewen Maddock Dam after reports that the Council received advice from Seqwater that during a major flood event the dam could present “a significant risk to human life and property”. In response, Seqwater will be holding a tour of the dam which is open to anyone in the community. I would encourage everyone to attend this tour as it is sure to provide important insight into the local drinking water supply, what dangers can present during a flood event, as well as an update on future works to the dam. First meeting of the Landsborough Sub-Committee
I would like to congratulate the Landsborough business community for coming together last week for the first-ever meeting of the newly formed Landsborough Sub-Committee. This new arm of the Glasshouse Chamber of Commerce will focus on business and community needs which are unique to Landsborough. There was an excellent showing of new businesses and a robust discussion regarding the proposed rail overpass, mobile phone coverage and the long-term health of the business community. Excellent work by everyone involved in bringing this important committee together.
Thanks to the residents who came for a chat at my Meet and Greet session held at Ewen Maddock Dam recently. Planning and development enquiries, a local sporting club catch up and recreation uses were topics of interest. With almost two in three Australian adults overweight or obese, a new CSIRO report has analysed the five main diet related personality types of more than 90,000 Australian adults to gain a comprehensive picture of why many people find it hard to maintain a healthy diet. In what is Australia’s largest-ever diet and personality survey, food cravings were found to be one of the most common reasons diets get derailed. “For anyone who has found eating to lose weight difficult, your personal Diet Type, daily habits and lifestyle factors could provide the answer to why some weight loss methods haven’t worked for you in the past,” the report’s co-author, CSIRO Behavioural Scientist Dr Sinead Golley, said. CSIRO’s report focused on the five most common diet personality types across the surveyed population, and looked at the major stumbling blocks for each personality type. The five most common diet personality types found across the surveyed population, including differences in weight status, diet behaviour, gender and generation, were: The Thinker (37%). This is the most common Diet Type. Predominantly women (86%), Thinkers tend to over-analyse their progress and have unrealistic expectations. This can result in a sense of failure and derail a diet. The Craver (26%). One in four respondents is a Craver and finds it hard to resist temptation. More than half of all Cravers (58%) are obese.

Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service’s (SCHHS) BreastScreen Queensland mobile van will be at Morayfield Bunnings, Walkers Road from October 10 to 26. SCHHS Health Promotion Officer Kelly Hart said regular two yearly breast cancer screening was still the best way to find breast cancer early – well before a woman or her doctor can feel anything. “Unfortunately some women believe that if they have a breast screen once they do not have to return for another check-up unless they have a breast symptom which concerns them. Unfortunately this is not the case,” Ms Hart said. Women aged 40 and over are also eligible to participate in this free program. Daepo Korean BBQ When Lea and I visited Daepo Korean BBQ in Beerwah for lunch the other day, I was really pleased to see how many vegetarian dishes they had on offer – which all looked equally enticing. This was in addition to the already extensive menu of meat options, but after being absolutely spoilt for choice and having sampled the food... I think I may have found my new favourite Asian fusion restaurant! Open for lunch and dinner from Tuesday to Sunday, the place has a modern, almost industrial, upmarket feel and works equally well to drop in for a casual sit down lunch or a place to bring friends and family for a special occasion in the evening. The same owners run Hikaru located just outside of Woolworths, which offers some great grab and go options, while Daepo offers a more comprehensive menu and the full dining experience. Traditional Korean meals are noted for their number of side dishes and their menu appetizers

certainly offered a good variety of interesting and tempting dishes. After much deliberation I decided to follow tradition and order a few side dishes to make up my lunch selection and Lea decided on a Beef Bibim Bap which comes presented in a stoneware pot served with rice. While we waited for our order, our friendly waitress JB told us more about Korean cuisine and brought out a trio of kimchi and we enjoyed a pot of honey date tea and honey citron tea – which was so tasty it made me want to come back again for more. I ordered Deep Fried Tofu with soy dressing which strangely I also wanted to drink it was so good, along with Edamame Beans and Vegetable Gyozas – which were the perfect combination of crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Lea also ordered a cute Beef Bento Box to take back to share at the office for Brownie’s lunch which he gave the thumbs up to. The menu had heaps of individual meal options as well as all of the meals on the buffet including
Noodle dishes, soups, Daepo lunch specials and more – there were even kids’ Bento boxes. If you haven’t been yet this place is definitely worth checking out!

Spring in the garden A lovely afternoon was had by all at Maleny Quota’s Spring in the Garden Fashion Show and Afternoon Tea fundraiser, held in the stunning grounds of Balmoral House last Tuesday afternoon. With fashion on show from Rather Bizr, Caren Lee Millinery and new online label Poshippie, there was plenty to feast your eyes on. With entertainment, raffles and a cent stall, as well as great food and drinks on offer, the afternoon aimed to raise money to help Quota with their contributions to local community programs.

Viceroy’s House for Maleny
This Saturday, October 7, the Maleny Film Society will have two screenings of 'Viceroy’s House', a production in English from the UK, India and Sweden: a 2.30pm matinee and evening screening at 7.15pm, following an (optional) catered dinner from 6pm. Set in New Delhi in March 1947, 'Viceroy’s House' captures the arrival of the final British Viceroy to India, Lord Louis Mountbatten, played by Downton’s Hugh Bonneville, accompanied by Lady Edwina (Gillian Anderson) and their 18-year-old daughter Pamela. Michael Gambon plays the Viceroy’s Chief of Staff. Writer/director Gurinder Chadha, with those tragic times in her own family background, stresses the British aplomb of this powerful entourage. By August 14 that year, the partition of India and Pakistan would be in action, moving thousands of Muslims into Pakistan and scattering Hindus and Sikhs across other areas. The chaos that is about to be unleashed is in direct contract to the genteel Britishness of the Viceroy’s house, where a tragic romantic subplot develops, concerning a Hindu valet and a Muslim serving girl. Members of the Maleny Film Society may pre-book online, adding up to two non-member guests, or at the Maleny Information Centre. Door tickets for non-members are likely to be popular. Contributed by Jennifer Radbourne Audiences in regional towns across Australia should not be deprived of seeing the best in the performing arts – particularly if the artists are Australians who have achieved excellence in their art form. Many regional Queenslanders cannot drive/fly to Brisbane to see the opera, orchestra, singers and theatre. Here in the Glasshouse Country and Maleny Hinterland we are very fortunate that such artists take up the invitation of the Maleny Arts Council to bring their shows here – for example: Queensland Opera, Queensland Theatre, Jane Rutter, and the US-based Frank Ferrante (Groucho). On October 15 we have 'Tenori' performing at the Maleny Community Centre hall. These three tenors were in the original Ten Tenors and regularly perform across Australia and overseas. They perform on cruise ships – but you don’t have to pay for a cruise, you can see them in Maleny. They perform in major cities across Australia, but you can see them in Maleny. When I interviewed David Kidd as to why they enjoy performing to audiences in small regional towns, he said, "People are always grateful you've made the effort to come to their part of the world. It's no effort for us, we love the travel and we find towns that have a strong Arts Council are far more engaged in the process. They're keen to meet the artists and have a chat." He also described regional audiences as "more enthusiastic in their applause; a crowd in the big concert halls can sit on their hands, they're often a little jaded. It's all grand and exciting but you have a different relationship with a crowd who are sitting two metres away". So, your date with these three fabulous tenors is on October 15 at 2pm in the Maleny Community Centre. Their repertoire includes songs from opera and musical theatre, but they also surprise you with some jazz and swing, engaging all audience members in their entertaining performance. They’re excited to premiere songs from their just-released album, 'Timeless', a collection of enduring classics, covering everything from Verdi to McCartney. Sweet Corn
Did you know that sweet corn is a member of the grass (Poaceae) family? There are not many other grass crops that produce such a sweet and juicy yield. Growing corn in the backyard isn’t too hard and can reward you and the family with cobs of yellow deliciousness. Firstly, make sure you’re soil is fertile, as corn – like most other grasses – is a heavy feeder. Dig through manures, compost and chook poo pellets to get the soil ready, and add some lime to sweeten the soil. Water it all well and leave it to settle. At the same time, plant your sweet corn seeds in containers. They germinate and grow really quickly, so I tend to do this rather than buy seedling punnets. Plant a half as many seeds again as you think you’ll need – that gives you some back-up seedlings for later. When the seedlings are around 15cm high, plant them into the prepared bed. Plant them no closer than 20cm apart (30cm is best). Planting them 5cm into the soil will mean that they will throw roots from the stems, giving you stronger plants with more roots to absorb nutrients. Plant them in blocks rather than long single rows, as it will improve pollination later. I normally grow four rows of five plants at a time. Water in well, and keep the soil moisture levels high as they establish. You’ll also need to give them some liquid fertiliser to boost their growth. If one or two die off, you should have your back-up seedlings ready to replace them. As they reach about 40cm high, plant your next lot of seeds to grow as the second block of corn. Do this every time from now til the start of February, and you’ll have a good supply of corn for months. As the corn grows, they will need a higher amount of nitrogen – you can use a sprinkling of urea to side dress them. At 1m tall, plant two butternut pumpkin seedlings in each block. They like growing together and you’ll have an instant pumpkin patch when your corn finishes. When the flowers (the female cobs and the male flowers at the top of the stalks) start to form, you’ll need to cut back on the nitrogen and side dress with potash. You need to make sure you water a couple of times a week as the cobs develop, so that they grow plump and juicy. In our climate, pest caterpillars will be a problem. I find that when the female silks of the corn appear it’s best to spray them (the cobs) with Dipel or Success twice weekly. These are safe products for you, the kids, the dog and the other good garden bugs. You’ll know that the cobs are ready to pick when the silks go brown and the cobs stick out from the stalk at more of an angle. Some people leave the dark stalks after harvest and grow climbing beans up them, or just cut them down and let the butternuts take hold.

The Maleny Garden Club has been running its annual Gardening on the Edge event since 2005 and has raised over $100,000 since its inception, and in June this year they held another spectacular event, featuring six gardens in total, three in Flaxton and three around Maleny. At the club’s September meeting they presented almost $15,000 of the funds they raised this year to local community groups. Cheques were presented to representatives from Maleny Hospital $5,000, Blackall Range Care Group $2,600, State Emergency Service $2,500, Maleny Rural Fire Brigade $2,500, Maleny Neighbourhood Centre $600, Maleny Men’s Shed $600, Maleny High School Chaplaincy $600 and Maleny Primary School Chaplaincy $600. Planning is already underway for the 2018 Gardening on the Edge event which will be held on Saturday and Sunday, June 9 and 10, with gardens open between 9am and 4pm each day. The co-ordinator for next year’s event is Toni Walters who is already working with local garden owners to put together another interesting selection of gardens on the Range to share and inspire both local and visiting gardeners.

The palm-like leaves have prominent veins running along their length, and are lightly covered in short strong hairs. The seed heads develop mainly in summer and grow to 2m and produce many small round seeds. Originating from Asia and introduced as an ornamental, it can quickly grow into thick infestations, outcompeting native plants and pasture species and can grow in heavy shade. The leaves are covered in stiff hairs which cause itchiness if they contact the skin. Control is best by careful hand removal or using a glyphosate herbicide.

Noticeboard Happy hats at Mental Wellness Day The third annual Mental Wellness Day at Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre will be held on Wednesday October 11. The free event is a part of Queensland Mental Health Week and will provide strategies for strengthening your mental health. Activities include conversations about living with mental health issues, fun activities and a Mad Hatter’s lunch for a gold coin donation. Everyone is encouraged to wear their ‘happy hat’ for a chance to win a prize. The day will kick off at 9.30am with Acknowledgement of Country by Uncle Alan Parsons and Bernadette Hazzard. There will be a range of topics for conversation on the day, including Mental Health lived experience panel questions and answer session covering areas such as schizophrenia, eating disorders and other mental health issues. There will also be conversations about living with dementia, art therapy, dru yoga, mindfulness and hula hooping, and the links between diet and mental health. The Glasshouse Love Inclusion Nurture Care (LINC) group for suicide prevention will have a small stall and representatives from Personal Helpers and Mentors will also be available on the day. What has blown me away is not only the magnitude of the storm and the damage, but the community response to these tragedies. It seems in these tragedies that what aims to pull us apart actually brings us together and stronger than before. The recent Australian bushfire and flood tragedies provide numerous examples of mateship, courage and community resilience. The Bible dedicates a whole book to an individual who faced extreme tragedy. The book of Job is one that will no doubt leave you with more questions than answers. Job’s belief and hope in tragedy can be summed

The Range Croquet Club Contributed by Ken Barker Practices on Saturday morning have been well attended lately and this Saturday was no exception. The general air of bonhomie around these sessions belies their serious nature. Playful souls like Ted Gardner and Priscilla Vickers are the main culprits – providing colour and humour to counterbalance the intensely cerebral aspects of the game. It bodes well for the future. Good players know how to have fun. On Sunday, Ken Barker and Kath Smith played a game of singles with Ken getting up 22-14. The score doesn’t reflect the tightness of the game which was only decided in the last break. Thursday saw Donna Manning and Bev Sockhill playing Frances Harper and Kath Smith on lawn one in a game where the company proved to be more important than the final score. The heat proved to be a major factor in ending the game early. On lawn two, Wendy, Giani and Vince played friendly games of golf. Apart from the heat it was very pleasant.

An extremely hot day, so it was awesome to see six rinks of bowls with Glasshouse members sharing the green with players from Woodford, Donnybrook and Palmwoods. The winners of the day were Jenny Morris, Rod Williams (visitor) and Rob Scullion with 2 wins and a margin of +11. Runner up with a draw in the first game and a + 14 margin in the second game were Eileen Pierce, Lloyd Walker and Judy Walker. Lucky draw went to Bill James, Viv James and Bill Tumbridge. This was our last Monday until April next year. Wednesday September 27: Ladies Consistency, Di Hume def Chris Freshwater 156-124, Millie Freshwater def Noelene Annakin 151-74, and Viv James def Maz Idle 151-144. The club committee has decided to up the prize money for Wednesday Monthly Jackpot Triples, taking the jackpot, if won, from $500 to $600. Get your teams in now. In A grade, 13 out of 27 players shot nett par or better. Marshall Caldwell fired a winning 65 (73 gross) to edge out John Runge (67) who beat Roger Bonhomme on a countback for second. In B grade, Des Wicks also shot 65 to win from three 68s recorded by Craig Walters (Bribie Island), Lawrie McDonald (Broadford, Victoria) and Bob Wright. Lindsay Webb recorded the day's best round, 63, to win C grade from Mick Odgers (65). Of the 65 C graders, 20 scored nett par or better. Maleny Bowls Club Contributed by Jim King We had full greens for our monthly jackpot pairs last Monday, an excellent representation from the Maleny club members. Thanks to all who braved the very trying hot conditions particularly to those members who came back on a very hot Tuesday for members’ bowls. Winners on the day with an impressive +44 were Leigh Irwin and Lester Buckley from Kilcoy. Runners-up were Ray Auer and Adam Kelly from Woodford. Raffle winners were Alan Cook and Miles Allen (2nd and 3rd). The $75 jackpot was won by Jess and Peter from Woodford. Tuesday winners were Ray Pantlin and John Kapetanic. Wednesday night barefoot bowls winners were Paul Kemp and Miles Allen, Bridge Club, Outlaws and Sunstone. Touchers were Laurie Fawns, Paul Kemp and Steve Porter. Laurie Fawns enjoyed her Twix in the lucky draw while Christine Lister and Pat Dunne drew bottles of wine. The club has a very big weekend ahead and needs plenty of assistance from members. On Saturday we host Andrew Powell’s fundraiser for lung disease and we expect a large crowd. We need assistance from bowlers who can help the visiting non-bowlers get organised for their games. We also will be providing an afternoon tea for what could be up to 70 people. We back up on Sunday with the visit of 20 bowlers from the Northside Social Bowls Club arriving about 10am.
