Hi Everyone... We have been in 2020 for a few months and I have to admit I really have not been hitting the mark on one of my new year’s resolutions. OK, so this mightn’t surprise you and you are probably thinking it is something like giving up chocolate or eating more vegetables but it’s not that easy. At the end of last year I got thinking that I needed a resolution to embrace technology and it made sense that this idea should happen in 2020. It started by becoming a social media master and, yes, GC&M News has Facebook and Instagram accounts, which as a team we do really well. We post lots of news, updates, photos of events, event reminders, etc and we have more than 7,000 followers, which is great. However, on my personal Facebook and Instagram I am totally rubbish. This year all I have managed is one Facebook post (and, yes, that was on the first day back at work) and not a single Instagram post. So, I am taking very small steps with this goal – this week I am pledging to do two Instagram posts. If you want to keep me honest why not follow my Instagram account Editor GCM News.

Cover Story Dusk on the Deck
By Lea Parkes The Zonta Club of Blackall Range hosted its fifth Dusk on the Deck at the Maleny Community Centre last Sunday night. The annual event celebrates International Women’s Day, Zonta International Rose Day and the announcement of the annual Zonta Woman of Achievement award. Zonta’s president Judith Ross-Smith thanked the group of invited guests, who represented a wide cross section of Maleny’s community groups and service clubs, and explained that the person who would be receiving the award had no idea that was why they were there. Judging by the look of total shock on Lynda Burgess’s face when the announcement was made, it was pretty obvious that she had been kept in the dark until that moment. However, for anyone who knows the born-and-bred Maleny local it isn’t surprising that her work in the local community would be recognised in this way. Chair of the organising committee Ann Koenig listed just a few of the many clubs and organisations that Lynda is currently involved in, including president of the Witta Recreation Club, Maleny Senior Citizens and the Show Society, and described her as a silent, or maybe a quiet, achiever. While the announcement was being made, I could hear people around me listing off plenty of other groups and events they were aware of that Lynda was involved in, including the Hospital Auxiliary and one of the organisers of Muscle on the Mountain. Lynda appeared humbled by the award and explained that when you are born and bred in a town

A remarkable exhibition celebrating the career of one of the Sunshine Coast’s and Australia’s most accomplished ceramicists, Johanna DeMaine from Landsborough, is now on at the Caloundra Regional Gallery. The exhibition, titled Johanna DeMaine: the form: the function: the aesthetic, spans Ms DeMaine’s five decades of practice, including early functional ware, the decorative and ornamental, through to recent works incorporating new techniques and imagery that combine the influences of the Sunshine Coast and Japan. Ms DeMaine’s highly sought-after artworks are held in private and public collections both nationally and internationally, including the British and Danish Royal families’ collections. Caloundra Regional Gallery collections curator Nina Shadforth said the exhibition celebrated Ms DeMaine, highlighting the origins, development and influences that have shaped her work. “Johanna is held in great esteem by her peers and she’s renowned for her highly decorative and functional forms, where she exquisitely depicts the beauty of her surrounding regional environments of Landsborough and Arita (Japan),” Nina said. “Over the years, Johanna has finessed her craft and achieved a reputation for a design aesthetic that really sets her apart. The lushness of her recent body of work is breathtaking and seductive and imbued with radiance, placing her among the most sought-after ceramicists, not only in Japan and the Sunshine Coast, but nationally and abroad.”
Ms DeMaine said form had always been central to her work - the three dimensional presence that draws the eye and displaces space in such a way as to create a communication of beauty inviting the viewer to a closer intimacy. “In my work I explore the notion that the sublime is an extension of beauty,” Ms DeMaine said. “The work explores my inner and outer space through the use of preciousness. I attempt to achieve this through the use of higher levels of skill, precious materials and contemporary technology while actively pushing all to their limits. “My work can be seen as iconic, in that it celebrates the ritualistic and raises the object above the every day. “I pay homage to the beauty of my environment by portraying nature’s icons: the Glass House Mountains. I endeavour to interpret the feeling of the mountains floating eternally like ships through space and time bridging two cultures and thereby creating our unique Australian culture.” Former curator of decorative arts at Queensland Art Gallery, Glenn Cooke, said Johanna DeMaine was, without question, the most distinguished ceramic practitioner now working in Queensland. The exhibition will be on display until Sunday, April 26.

Beerwah Sportsground financial future in doubt The Beerwah Sportsground is in a financially perilous position due to a change in approach taken by Sunshine Coast Council, according to the ground’s management committee. The Beerwah Sportsground Management Committee Inc (BSMC) is the leaseholder of the facility, with the grounds being owned by the state and council being trustee. Under the lease arrangement, the BSMC’s responsibility is to manage and maintain the grounds, which according to BSMC spokesperson Helen Weil, runs to around $240,000 a year. “This is raised through clubs, groups and other organisations using the grounds for organised events, campers staying up to 72 hours at a time and the affiliated sporting clubs paying to use the facilities,” Helen said. Up until recently, $120,000 - half their income was raised from fees paid by organised caravan, recreational vehicle (RV) and similar clubs travelling from far and wide to hold rallies in the region and using the sportsground as their base to stay and set up camp. Under the BSMC’s accommodation park licence, those caravan and RV activities were allowed to set up using electricity provided at the sportsground as a temporary event as it was deemed to be an existing use before the licence was granted by the council in 2019. All that had to be done for the caravan and RV rally to go ahead with electricity was for a
temporary event application to be lodged with council, as the licence allows. This worked well until a recent change of approach by the council. Helen said that the council had now changed its mind and ruled that the caravan and RV rallies were not events and so could not be approved. “We’ve now lost all the rallies planned for the rest of 2020. That’s 13 bookings and half our income for the year,” Helen said. “These rallies come here because they can’t go anywhere else locally where they have the space for large caravans, and lots of them, close to a town and shops, and have the basic amenities they want - nothing fancy. “These rallies bring a lot of money into the area, to the food shops, the hairdressers, the gift shops, the tourism spots and caravan repairers. “So the region as a whole is going to miss out on this extra money, not just the sportsground,” she said. Because of this decision, the BSMC does not know how it is going to keep operating the sportsgrounds. “The books in February showed we had $2,600 of income and $12,000 outgoings. At this rate we won’t be able to stay afloat for very long,” Helen said. “All we want to know is why this suddenly changed and what we need to do to change the situation before it’s too late for us.”
The BSMC organised a crisis meeting with user groups of the sportsground, the Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce, Celebrate Glasshouse Country, local traders and invited Division 1 candidates in the upcoming Sunshine Coast Council election. Three candidates attended the meeting last Wednesday – Rick Baberowski, Jenny Broderick and Mark Davis. The group workshopped the issues, addressed the restrictions and agreed to a plan of action before it is too late. The BSMC will request that the acting council CEO urgently commence a review process to look at the change in the local and regional context from when the licence was originally established and to address the inconsistency of the rallies now not being assessed as temporary events. The meeting concluded with all three candidates committing to working with the BSMC to resolve the dilemma, no matter who wins on March 28.

The design has been completed for the Peachester Road intersection upgrade funded by the Queensland Government. It puts the project on track for the start of construction in coming months, supporting 13 jobs. Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said the final design incorporated community feedback received during the consultation period and would feature a new signalised intersection, additional turning lanes, safer pedestrian connections and dedicated bicycle lanes. “We committed to upgrading this road and we’re delivering,” Mr Bailey said. “The upgrade will increase capacity and make the road safer for Beerwah State School families and the 7,800 motorists who use the road each day.” Mr Bailey said the road widening and additional turning lanes would accommodate heavy vehicle movements, making it easier for drivers to safely navigate the intersection. He said road resurfacing works would also be undertaken on Peachester Road from the Old Gympie Road intersection east to the Blackbutt Street intersection. Member for Glass House Andrew Powell is delighted the design work for the upgrade and signalisation of the Kilcoy-Beerwah and Old Gympie Roads intersection at Beerwah State School is complete and that work is set to begin mid-2020.

“I have advocated for upgrading this intersection for years now. It’s taken a lot of community angst and lobbying to convince the government to come around and improve it but we’ve got there in the end,” Mr Powell said. This intersection caters for a mix of road users, including pedestrians accessing the Beerwah State School and heavy vehicles accessing commercial facilities along Old Gympie Road. The intersection upgrade will include installation of traffic signals, road widening to accommodate additional turning lanes and associated vegetation clearing to facilitate road widening. Labor candidate for Glass House Brent Hampstead said it was great news for the people of Beerwah and surrounding areas that work was finally about to begin at the dangerous intersection. "When Jason Hunt and I ran for Labor in Caloundra and Glass House at the last election, we door knocked hundreds of homes in Beerwah and this intersection was the top issue on people's minds,” Mr Hampstead said. "We promised that a re-elected Palaszczuk Labor government would get this done, and they are. All state schools to be air conditioned
Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has promised that every classroom, every library and every staff room in every Queensland state school will be air conditioned. Ms Palaszczuk said the news would be welcomed by parents, teachers, teacher aides, staff and students alike. “We want our schools to be places where children can learn in comfortable environments,” the Premier said. While almost two-thirds of Queensland state schools are already air conditioned, last November the Premier announced the next 301 schools to be air conditioned. The state government has now decided it is time to do the rest. Member for Glass House Andrew Powell said this was a stunning backflip from the Palaszczuk Labor government given they had spent the past two years attacking the LNP’s air-conditioning commitment. “That aside, it is a huge win for Queensland kids and teachers. I and the LNP have campaigned for air conditioning in all our state schools because we know kids struggle to learn in hot classrooms and, after all, cool kids are smart kids,” Mr Powell said. “But the fight is not over just yet. The devil’s always in the detail and this government hasn’t been able to keep a promise when it comes to air conditioning our schools yet,” he said. by mid-2022 and will create 1,000 jobs installing, repairing and maintaining school air conditioning, plus an additional 80,000 school rooftop solar panels will be installed to meet running costs. Schools/classrooms that already have air conditioning will not have to pay to for servicing or replacement in the future. Education Minister Grace Grace said she wanted to thank the hard work done by P&Cs and school communities that had installed air conditioning at their local schools. “This new, ongoing funding means schools can confidently plan for the future, knowing that their air conditioning needs will be catered for,” Ms Grace said. Iconic building and beloved home lost
By Lea Parkes Landsborough couple Rachelle Headley and Shane Herbert were devastated in January when they lost their historic home on Maleny Street to a house fire. The paramedic couple returned home from dinner to find their home filled with smoke, fire quickly took hold and sadly the property could not be saved. For many in our community who regularly drive or walk past what is left of the building, it is heartbreaking to see and locals have been genuinely concerned for the couple and how they plan to move forward. I recently caught up with Rachelle, who is still finding it difficult to come to terms with losing everything except for their dogs, ducks and geese, what they were wearing and what was on the clothesline. However, they remain positive and keen to move forward. They are just waiting for the final

decision from the insurance company before they are able to clear the burnt out shell of the building and start the re-build. While Rachelle and Shane would love to recreate exactly what was on the block, Rachelle explained that builders’ estimates show it would cost them around $1.5 million. Sadly the insurance isn’t likely to agree to that, so they have decided to work with a design that retains the heritage look of the property, particularly the verandah area at the front, so for those travelling past it will definitely retain the style of the building that is familiar. They would like to reuse any elements of the building material that is salvageable in the rebuild and also hope to work with Sunshine Coast Council to have a plaque installed to acknowledge the building’s history. The couple, who have had to temporarily relocate to Caloundra to a rental property, are really keen to see the rebuild get under way and even keener

to return to their daily Landsborough lives. Talking to Rachelle, it is obvious just how much they loved their forever home, which they purchased 18 months ago, but also Landsborough itself. Rachelle said they had been really moved by the kindness and support they had felt from the rest of the community and can’t wait to get back home. The cause of the fire has been confirmed as a laptop charging in the lounge room. Rachelle would like to encourage others to be aware of just how quickly things can happen and the importance of having smoke detectors installed. The building originally served the town as a police station for more than 50 years, until 1939. It was built in 1890. Rachelle had undertaken lots of research about the building’s history and is hoping to be able to access many of the documents and photos once again.

Beerwah forum to discuss Coles proposal eastonlawyers with council candidates A group of local businesses and traders from Beerwah and surrounds, concerned about the potential impacts on the local commercial environment of the proposed Coles and associated development, have organised a forum this Wednesday, March 11 for locals to meet, discuss the proposal and listen to the views of others regarding this massive new development. The development proposes a new business district on the corner of Roys Road and Steve Irwin Way contrary to the purposes established under the Sunshine Coast Planning Scheme. The locality – currently zoned for light industrial use – would include a Coles, petrol station, McDonalds and provisions for a retail showroom, hardware/nursery, gym and bulky goods homemaker centre. The forum – to be held at the Beerwah Coffee
Club from 5.30-7.30pm – will be an opportunity for the Division 1 candidates vying for election to Sunshine Coast Council at the March 28 elections to hear concerns and answer questions from locals wanting to know where they stand on supporting locals and local businesses. All interested business owners and residents are invited to attend to find out what impacts the traders feel the proposal will have on the township. The evening is also a great opportunity to put a face to a name and hear from those wanting to be your local elected representative. Light refreshments will be served from 5.30pm, with the forum and question/answer session starting at 6pm. Business News A bright new look for Club Glass House
Have you dropped into Club Glass House recently? They have made some bright changes to the bar and dining area and thrown a splash of colour around with new carpet, flooring and dining chairs bringing a modern touch to the club. Club manager Sharon Bochow and 2IC Sonia Bowen had a hand in designing the carpet, which represents our region with features that include a burst of pineapples, strawberries, Monstera deliciosa, bird of paradise and hibiscus. Sharon and Sonia said feedback from patrons had been great, with many commenting on how happy it makes them feel. Our photos don’t do it justice, so head in and see for yourself! Sonia has asked patrons to please leave grubby work boots at the door, with thongs for hire to keep the carpet looking its best.

Big plans for 2020 The Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce recently held its first networking event for the year at a breakfast meeting at Vianta Café in Beerwah. What’s at stake in the council elections? By Rick Baberowski The upcoming council election has major implications for jobs, transport, the environment and our local character. My family and I (pictured) have lived here for more than 30 years and I care deeply about protecting this area so that the next 30 are even better. Now is not the time for instability. With it looking increasingly likely we are heading into a rough period for Australia’s economy, we need experienced leadership on the Sunshine Coast to protect local jobs. Our region is especially vulnerable to downturns due to our reliance on tourism and construction. Your council needs to work hard, respond and act quickly. We may need to stimulate the local economy with new projects, cut fees to help businesses survive, and quickly create programs to alleviate any social problems that arise. We need to rebuild business confidence as quickly as possible when the threats resolve. That will take an experienced and determined councillor. The long-term outlook for our economy is good. Maroochydore city centre is coming out of the ground and will generate 12,000-15,000 jobs. We are less than 90 days away from the first flights, including international flights landing at our upgraded airport. When international tourism picks up again, we’ll have the opportunity to appeal to a global market. In Glasshouse Country, I have been working on initiatives to boost retail, manufacturing, tourism and agriculture. On transport, we are at a critical point. The state and federal governments have under invested in
our infrastructure for too long. There are at least six road and rail projects the coast needs in the next five years, or the growth will cause spiralling congestion across our road network. There are likely to be several rounds of state and federal stimulus funding soon. I have made sure that council has done the work so there are several road and rail projects ready to go – we’ve done a lot of the heavy lifting on the planning side. Now we need an experienced councillor at the table to make sure those projects are pushed forward vigorously for any new funding. Even in difficult times, we can have both a healthy economy and a thriving environment. For example, we have to protect the beautiful
and delicate Pumicestone Passage. I have been on the catchment committee for the past eight years and we have achieved water quality up to an A minus level, equal best in the region. I am determined to make sure that the dugong and black swans are still there for our children’s children. In the next planning scheme, we need to protect each township’s identity and ensure they don’t all merge into one big suburb. Our country character is our best asset and it is what makes Glasshouse Country an attractive destination. I will make sure that the next planning scheme sets us up for sustainable growth and that our character is protected.

Community News Landsborough neighbours gather together Julie Savage loses out in Division 1
Have you been to one of the Landsborough neighbourhood gatherings under the mango tree behind Landsborough School of Arts Memorial Hall? Local community group Landsborough – Love Where We Live, in collaboration with the Landsborough Hall, will be hosting its fourth gathering on Saturday, March 21. Following the overwhelming positive feedback from the last event that was held in the early evening, entertainment for the March 21 Linda Young, Kelly Burgess with event will start at 4pm and finish Mordie Mullet and Bekky Hoge at 8pm. As with previous gatherings, Rotary will be selling vegetarian and meat burgers, along with a sausage sizzle for little and big kids alike. Hot and cold drinks will also be available and Landsborough Community Kindergarten and KinderMarlee Early Childhood Centre will have a range of fun activities for the kids. One of highlights of the gatherings has been the local musicians and at this event the line-up has been extended to include six acts sharing their musical talent. The Brolly’s singer, Holly Aston, said she loves playing to the local crowd and it was great to have this sort of event in Landsborough. “We’d never sung in public before and now we really look forward to it. The last event at night was fantastic with such an amazing atmosphere,” Holly said. In the February 19 edition of Glasshouse Country & Maleny News, Beerwah local Julie Savage announced her intention to run as a Division 1 candidate at the March 28 Sunshine Coast Council election. A series of hitches meant Julie’s application was not formally accepted by the Electoral Commission of Queensland (ECQ). Julie contacted GC&M News last Tuesday after she had been advised by ECQ that one of the six people listed on her form as a nominator was not enrolled within the Sunshine Coast Council electoral region. This glitch, rendering her application invalid, came after the ECQ misplaced her forms only finding them 15 minutes before the midday Tuesday deadline. This bureaucratic error resulted in Julie having no time to resubmit the forms with a new nominator living within the Sunshine Coast Council area. It was a devastating blow, Julie said. “First they lost my candidate papers, then they found them … seems like they were late being delivered. “Now they say I cannot be a candidate because one of my nominees lives 200m outside of the Sunshine Coast electoral boundaries,” she said.
New water meters
During March Unitywater, as part of its annual infrastructure maintenance program, will identify and replace water meters nearing the end of their life cycle in Mooloolah Valley, Landsborough, Glass House Mountains, Maleny and Beerwah. Affected residents will receive a notification card in their letterbox at least 48 hours before any works begin and, if they are home on the day of the work, Unitywater’s authorised contractor will make contact with them before replacing the meter. Following meter replacement, the contractor will leave a ‘works completed’ card in the resident’s letterbox that records the water consumption measured by the old meter. Customers are advised to keep this reading for reference and to cross check when they receive their next Unitywater account. Young gun takes reins at Ray White Beerwah
youNG gun Alex Garden has just become the youngest residential business owner within Ray White Queensland when he took ownership of the Beerwah franchise in the heart of the beautiful Sunshine Coast hinterland. the 25-year-old father of two young sons was excited to take the reins of the existing business from his mentor and former principal Paul O’Brien who has since retired after 30 years in the industry. “Paul and his wife Jo have taught me everything I needed to know about running a business and real estate sales. they have been terrific mentors for me and I am grateful for all his advice,” Mr Garden said. Five years ago Alex Garden and his partner hailey moved from toowoomba to Beerwah to start a new life closer to the beach. “I walked straight into the Ray White office in Beerwah and spoke to Paul asked for a chance and the rest is history. I started as Paul’s associate for a year and I shadowed him while he taught me everything,” Mr Garden said. “In my four years as a salesperson I have won numerous awards and I have always had the ambition that I wanted to own my own business. It’s like my dream has come true.”
Mr Garden is supported at Ray White Beerwah by tracy Garden who is the senior property manager and part-owner of the new franchise too. “We are the same familiar faces that our clients have known for so long and we have plans to grow the rent roll through good old fashioned customer service.” Ray White Queensland Ceo tony Warland said he was happy to see Alex Garden realise his long-held ambition of owning his own business. “From a rising star rookie to a business owner in less than five years is quite an achievement for the young man,” Mr Warland said. “of course age is no barrier if you are restless with ambition and right now he is the youngest residential business owner in the Queensland network. Community and local business callout
The newly established Mooloolah/Eudlo Local Disaster Management Community Sub Group recently received five refurbished laptops from the University of the Sunshine Coast (USC) Sippy Downs campus, which were gratefully received. The laptops will allow the team to be mobile, as and when required, as well as allowing the group to give talks and presentations to the local community on being prepared. The team was also delighted to receive a donation of stickers for emergency kits and laptops from locally run business Stickerman Caloundra. The group, endorsed by Sunshine Coast Council to assist and provide a localised response to community disasters, has an executive committee currently made up four Mooloolah locals - Jason Carroll (coordinator), Judi Olsen (deputy coordinator), Jade Young (secretary) and Ryan Cornett (communications officer). They are always on the lookout for any local businesses in the Mooloolah, Eudlo, Diamond Valley or Glenview area who would like to come on board and help with donations. They currently require donations of a radio (walkie talkie) system for communication and kit bags for emergency use. The group is also looking for assistance to pay its annual licence fee for the use of Microsoft Office on the laptops. Maleny Rotary community grant scheme
Rotary Maleny has been providing grants for local and overseas projects for more than 50 years, always with a view to provide a benefit to a group or organisation in need. During that time, the practice was for Rotarians to discreetly gather information on where there could be a need or an idea that would benefit from some financial support. The club itself did the research and made the decisions on the amounts, location and timing of the donations made. Six years ago, after using this discreet process for 50 years, Maleny Rotary posed a fundamental question to itself: “What else, where else and who else in our communities might need support, unknown to the club and therefore missing out on resources that could make a difference?” The response to this question was to establish the Maleny Rotary community grants scheme that now invites applications for financial assistance that makes a difference. The consequence in those six years has been a range of projects that the club would likely never have thought of. The scheme operates so not-for-profit groups in the Maleny and Montville hinterland can apply for funds to assist them with a specific need or project. The successful projects have been as diverse as the range of interests in the hinterland and examples include: • A shade sail (Croquet Club of Maleny) • Vet fees for Lucy the comfort dog (Maleny Memorial Hospital Auxiliary) • Website production (Smart Living) • Disability ramp and rails at Priscilla Cottage (Historical and Cultural Society) • Lightweight stackable chairs (Maleny Guides) • Garden tools for heritage plots (Pattemore House) • Portable netball hoops and training balls (Maleny Netball) • Sculptures for Riverside walk (Art4Place) These are just a few of the diverse projects that have helped clubs and benefited the community in some way. Paul’s legendary effort for mental health
Last Saturday, March 7, Paul Bairle, who many will recognise from Club Glass House, participated in Laps for Life, a fundraiser in support of ReachOut, Australia’s leading online mental health organisation for young people and their families. With the support of the community, Paul smashed his fundraising goal, so the focus was then firmly set on swimming his target of 6km at Swim Fit Beerwah’s pool. With one in four young Australians currently experiencing a mental health difficulty and suicide remaining the leading cause of death for young Aussies, ReachOut provides a vital 24/7 online free support to provide young people with a place to turn to when life gets tough. Paul’s fundraising efforts in the Laps for Life challenge have helped enable ReachOut to continue providing this valuable service to our youth. Well done Paul!
Scottish dance in Maleny
It’s time to don the tartan for a fun night of old time dancing with live music at the Maleny RSL on Saturday, March 28 from 7pm. The evening will celebrate the crowning of Robert the Bruce and will feature traditional dances including the Gay Gordons, heal and toe polka, pride of Erin and strip the willow. Christina Hanley, Kim Kirkman, other musicians and a piper will be performing live at this first dance of the year. Beerwah ghostwriter a champion Ghostwriter Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane has been named a Small Business Champion finalist from more than 3,000 entries received for the Australian Small Business Champions Awards for 2020. Being acknowledged as among the elite of Australian small business in the sole operator category is something the Beerwah resident is humbled by and follows her success as a Young Business Woman of the Year finalist for the Sunshine Coast Business Women’s Network and a Young Leader of the Year in the national My Business Awards in 2019. The journalist of 13 years turned her hand to ghostwriting non-fiction books in mid-2018. She made the switch to offer her way with words to people who have a dream to become an author, but don’t have the confidence or the skills to make it happen on their own. In that time, she has produced books for clients across the Sunshine Coast, interstate and overseas. “When I tell people I’m a ghostwriter, their eyebrows lift in surprise and a look of appreciation crosses their face. Their usual response is, ‘That’s cool... what does that mean?’ “In a nutshell, I work with aspiring authors to connect with their purpose and be a driver for writing a book and then I bring it to life. What I’ve discovered is writing a book is so much more than just putting words between two covers. It has been a life-changing experience for every single one of the people I have worked with and it is an honour to go on these journeys with them.” As a ghostwriter, Roxanne’s presence is as discreet or as publicised as the client chooses. However, having her name emblazoned on the cover is not her core motivation for doing what she does – it’s empowering people to achieve their dream of becoming an author.

Tourism de Fisher: holiday here this year!
This summer’s bush fires and now the coronavirus outbreak are having a huge impact on businesses in the Sunshine Coast hinterland, and especially in tourism. The Morrison government is stepping up. In January, the Prime Minister launched a $76 million tourism recovery package that includes a $20 million domestic marketing campaign encouraging Aussies to holiday in Australia, helping keep Australian tourism businesses afloat and save local jobs. The government has also invested in a $25 million international marketing campaign to reinforce to global audiences that Australia is safe and open for business. However, we can all do something to help. In January 2019, I held my Tour de Fisher campaign where I rode by push bike around to every major town in the seat of Fisher. Last week I kicked off my local Tourism de Fisher campaign. Every day in March, I will be using my Facebook page to share the story of one of the fantastic local tourism businesses in Fisher on Queensland’s glorious Sunshine Coast. I will also be visiting local tourism businesses wherever I can and have already begun speaking about them in the House of Representatives. Glasshouse RSL renovations
This month I officially opened the renovated Glasshouse Country RSL Sub Branch. The transformative renovations on this local icon were paid for with a grant of $258,000 from the federal government. This money means the RSL Sub Branch now has brand new bar and dining areas, increased space for military heritage displays, safety and security improvements throughout and a private welfare office area. Sub Branch members intend to encourage greater use of the facility for weddings, community events and other functions as well as ensuring that more veterans are able to benefit from improved welfare and mental health activities. I have been advocating strongly in Canberra for this funding since the beginning of last year and I am grateful to the community for helping me by showing their support at every stage. Captain Cook memorial
May 17, 2020 marks 250 years to the day since then Lieutenant (later Captain) James Cook sailed past and named the Glass House Mountains. We also have the proud history of Matthew Flinders and his Indigenous companion Bongaree exploring the mountains. On my Facebook page I have been asking people if they would support a memorial being erected at the Glass House Mountains Visitor Information Centre that commemorates Captain Cook or Cook, Flinders and Bongaree, or neither if they do not deem it to be appropriate. Kilcoy-Beerwah Road upgrades
Great news for Kilcoy-Beerwah Road users. After years of patch-up jobs, the road is finally being completely rehabilitated. TMR will undertake approximately 3.6km of works from south of the Hill Road intersection at Stanmore through to south of Phillips Road at Cedarton. Work will begin this month and be completed in 500m sections, with the rehabilitation and initial seal coat works expected to take six months to complete, weather and construction conditions permitting. Final seal coat works are programmed to be finished during the warmer months, with all works anticipated to be completed by early 2021. And for users of other roads (especially MalenyKenilworth Road) I haven’t given up the fight for similar improvements and upgrades.

Over the past couple of months I have been out and about delivering marquees to local schools, sporting groups and community organisations. It's been great to give back to the local community with items they'll use and love. The Country Women’s Association has a long and rich history in our nation. Queensland’s CWA was founded in 1922 and while in years gone by they were known for their scones, today they represent far more. In fact, over its history the QCWA has provided a friendship and support network between women to overcome loneliness and isolation. The outcome is a network of women who are the backbone of our society, providing support to those in need who are often women and children in our local community. I recently attended a meeting with members of the Beerwah branch and they exemplify how the CWA functions in modern times. If you attend a meeting or one of their fundraisers you will be greeted by a vibrant group of women from different generations and diverse backgrounds. Founded in 1947, the local branch has naturally changed over time but Debbie Ives, who’s been a branch member for eight years, told me it’s the organisation’s traditions that she loves. “When I attended my first meeting a number of years ago now, I really loved that this was an organisation that still took pride in old values, of bringing the community together and supporting one another,” Debbie said. The branch proudly hosts many community events and has played a role in bringing people in Beerwah together. They hold workshops, craft programs for school children, and have facilitated sewing bees for groups such as Boomerang Bangs and WILVOS. Through their bake sales, the branch recently raised more than $1,000 for our local firies and they give bursaries to outstanding students from the local high schools. The Beerwah CWA holds its monthly meetings on the first Monday of every month at 11.30am at the CWA Hall. The branch says it is open to women of all ages and you are welcome to bring your children. Questions to the candidates
Division 1 Rick Baberowski I am working on a range of initiatives that fall under four broad headings: 1. Make Beerwah more attractive to locals. I’m pleased with how the streetscape upgrade has achieved this but we can do more. I would create a new community hub/facility in Beerwah to get more people into the town, partner with community groups to better activate Beerwah Hall, and continue to enhance landscaping and signage. 2. Establish a larger visitor market. My goals will be to secure a full-time coordinator for the Beerwah Street Party who could run smaller events throughout the year, link the township with the proposed Seven Peaks Recreational Trail to bring in hikers and cyclists, and secure a Glasshouse Country festival site to create a bigger cultural offer. 3. Stimulate new business. We have used a program of reduced fees to stimulate new business development in Caloundra and Nambour. I would propose to expand this to Beerwah. 4. Create a larger local market through the Beerwah East development area. Beerwah East (an area that is currently pine plantation between Beerwah and the M1) is council’s alternative to developer-led proposals for the region’s next development area. It could provide a larger market and an engine of jobs for Glasshouse Country while being better for the environment. www.Re-electRick.com

According to the Sunshine Coast Planning Scheme “Beerwah is intended to continue to serve a significant business, retail, community and administrative role as the major regional activity centre for the southern Sunshine Coast hinterland”. In order to do so effectively, convenience and connectivity are essential. I would have grave concerns regarding further fragmentation. However, we also need to determine ways in which we can attract other sustainable businesses to Beerwah. Small Business rental needs to be affordable to both attract and keep our businesses open. With the explosion of online shopping affecting many retail businesses, we need to be promoting our residents to shop locally, and also ensure that people have convenient access the town centre. In order to do that effectively, we need to be attracting a variety of businesses and services. The feasibility of consistent shuttle connections across the railway towns in Glasshouse Country could be considered, making it easier for people to access the larger supermarkets and other stores. We need to constantly maintain attractive business centres, which may include the potential to furnish empty shop windows with local artwork, enhancing town attractiveness. There is also potential to create an inviting and exciting atmosphere for Beerwah at night, promoting our restaurants, eateries and local artists. Expand the current Beerwah Marketplace footprint to include the proposed Coles development. The business precinct will then have a significant CBD that will attract business and visitors to a greater Beerwah hub in the south of the Sunshine Coast. Rail is at the doorstep, and access to the Bruce Highway and for the greater Sunshine Coast, makes it an ideal option. The benefit from tourist dollars and a more convenient experience for locals will be maximised. Raelene Ellis Despite being roughly 10% of the Sunshine Coast population, Division 1 is only receiving about 3.75% of the capital works budget. We need to advocate for a fairer distribution of capital works funding between the Sunshine Coast divisions. We need to ensure Division 1 gets their fair share. This would allow us to invest in more infrastructure in hinterland areas such as Beerwah. The continued beautification of the Beerwah marketplace ought to be undertaken alongside significant community consultation so that the revamp of Beerwah marketplace reflects the desires of the local community. It is their marketplace where the locals will spend significant time. The types of things I would like to see is a focus on small business / family owned operations in Beerwah. I would also like to see a greater focus on social connectivity. We need safe crossings across Peachester Road. We need a redesign of the carpark as it is unsafe. We need a focus on public / green space where people can gather and bands can play, and safe places for children to play. The council could also consider a reduction in rates of standalone owner / operator shops to ensure those not in the shopping precinct remain viable. Thank you for your article re The Pineapple Patch (February 26). I was horrified to hear of the ignorance and fear being spread in the community. As we all know there’s nothing like a bit of ignorance to get the fearful going! I decided to do my bit and went to the restaurant for dinner last Thursday with the young man who is boarding with me at the moment, together with a good friend from Maleny and her grandson. Both the young men are in their early twenties and were quite stunned by the revelations in the paper. When we arrived there were a few people there – I spoke to Jocelyn and told her we were from Maleny, and were responding to the newspaper article. By the time we left the place was full and Jocelyn was thrilled, saying that she thought that the write up was making a difference. I also brought it up at our Maleny Probus meeting on Wednesday and, even though many had read the paper, they needed a push to follow through. What an eye-opener this COVID-19 is! In my 80 years on this wonderful Earth, I don’t recall such an ignorant response to a particular health issue. The wild buying of toilet paper beggars belief. I hope that my fellow humans start to gather what wits they have and behave sensibly and thoughtfully in the future. My young man and I will be going back to The Pineapple Patch again soon! Longer swimming season
As both the council elections and Easter draw near I am taking this happy coincidence to ask about the closure of Maleny swimming pool at the end of term. Why does this have to be? The weather doesn't suddenly change at Easter. The pool is owned by the Department of Education, which they upgraded to a salt pool only this summer. It is only used for swimming lessons in the warmer two terms. There is some arrangement via the swimming

I would like the council to negotiate with the department and pay for the pool to be open to the public for an extended period, say the warmest eight months of the year. I don't know what that would cost but it has to be far cheaper than building and running a new pool in Maleny. The council has approved land for a new pool complex, so until it is built can we please have the school pool open longer? Which of the council candidates would support this? Please let us know! It was inspiring to read in a recent edition of GCM News that the garden and service clubs in Maleny are collaborating to create a Settlers Park on the Maleny Precinct, including a playground for children. The project shows that our clubs really are committed to the community members of our town, including families and children, who rightly expect the 124 hectare Precinct to include informal recreational space for them, even if it is a modestly-sized piece of land beside a road on a slope. Happily, the opportunity to create a proper, spacious park is open to the clubs just as soon as the Maleny District Sport and Recreation Club sees the virtue of using its lease on park-perfect Platypus Bend for this purpose. The site has had a number of proposed uses. The first, footy fields planned in 2010, were moved to the showgrounds and Witta back in 2016, with the approval of the sporting community. The second, equestrian arenas including polo, were approved by council in 2016 but came to nought. The third, multi-use playing fields, were proposed in 2018 but have never been approved. And here we are in 2020 with 25 years to run! The lease, which council signed off in 2015, permits the club to hold the site for an astonishing 30 years. Plenty of time for our wonderful clubs to collaborate with the community and council to create a beautiful park comparable to those in our sister towns of Montville and Mapleton, not to mention Landsborough, Beerwah and Glass House. What does community mean to you? What potential is there for you? The potential is in having 50% of all land zoning being for community use and 50% for real estate and urban use, as is in shopping centres and industrial. That would mean less ugly urban graffitied empty building areas to drive through, creating greener bigger cities’ urban and suburban spread. More decentralised land for community and wildlife, which would allow for more wildlife corridors, more parks, more variety in parks and land for local culture, Indigenous and multicultural elements including Zen gardens, community gardens and so on. More men’s sheds, women’s sheds, teenagers’ sheds, shared sheds, new age sheds for pottery, ceramics, art and so on. Moving farmland in small towns like Glass House Mountains further out and rezoning the central land for permaculture/villages, urban agriculture, wildlife rehabilitation, horse and animal paddocks and so on. I have also seen on television garden shows highrise roof-top organic gardens/balcony gardens. Also I would like to know why council’s environment team and Cr Rick Baberowski allow concrete pathways through a sensitive wetland area at the Glass House Mountains District Park. I don’t see the parks and wildlife authority in Queensland allowing concrete paths in ecosensitive wetland areas. Instead they use timber boardwalks that are aged and disability friendly. Natural rocks, where suited, and bare earth tracks for mountain bikes, scooters and roller skates and so on, on boardwalk areas. Locally in Bli Bli wetlands, Ben Bennett Botanical Park, Maroochy Bushland Botanic Gardens and Little Yabba Creek and Kosciuszko National Park in NSW do not have concrete paths in them. Thursday February 27 was a sad day for me when my beautiful old mare Scouldie had to be put to sleep. She was one of the Sahara horses owned and raced by Mr Gowen of Sahara Farms. She was foaled on September 17, 1987 and her racing name was Sahara Scolding. I am told she was a very successful horse. I purchased her together with her stable mate Mandrake, whose racing name was Pirahi. They were both bound for pet food. Scouldie was near a cripple so I nursed her back to health with tender loving care and then started to ride her. That was 15 years ago. She has

Ken Dyer’s letter in GC&M News (February 26) regarding the Maleny Dairies products tender was an excellent description of the way government tendering and selection of suppliers is conducted. I have more than 25 years of experience in government procurement at Queensland state and local government and Commonwealth levels. I have been a member of large evaluation teams assessing tenders for contracts of values up to $500 million. From 2011 to 2018 I delivered procurement training to staff from various government agencies at both state and federal levels. Government tender evaluation processes are carried out following strict policies and guidelines to achieve a defensible outcome that represents value for money for taxpayers. Change our Mayor and council
In 2008 the World Health Organization declared road surface noise over 45 decibels was dangerous to people's lives and health. Irrespective of this our Mayor and council changed Bowen/Critteden Roads to 60kph and made them designated connection roads to the highway. Originally Moffat Road was the designated connection road but council said they did not have the funds to resurface Moffat Road. Nor did they have an environmental noise pollution policy. (The Main Roads Minister stated they “encourage local government to consider the guidance, methodologies and measures in the Transport Noise Management code of practice as a starting point when addressing these issues").

In 1993, when I arrived here, there were about 100 cars a day on Bowen Critteden Road and now we have upward of 4,000 per day with road surface noise of greater than 80 decibels contributing to health issues I am aware of. Has anyone else noticed the black grimy substance on roofs and solar panels? Possibly caused by excess vehicles. This will need to be addressed by our new council. Our new council will also need to be transparent and not hold closed secret meetings (apparently 208 by the last council). It appears this council has our funds for investing in submerged cables (which are probably already obsolete - look at new satellite uses and the NBN failures), solar farms and future transport (27 years and still waiting) but don’t have funds for the health and wellbeing of ratepayers. Many ratepayers will have more issues and complaints. To ensure we get a new Mayor and council, do not vote for the incumbents. Keith Mann Glass House Mountains

Planning scheme shortfalls frustrate residents By Greg Brown Last week a resident of Sidha Avenue in Glass House Mountains contacted GC&M News with a story about a parcel of land in the street that was suddenly destroyed without their knowledge or any notice given to the neighborhood. The resident explained that number 14 belonged to an elderly gentleman, who died a few years ago. The property was described as a little paradise for the beautiful birds in the area as the man had planted many fruit trees and encouraged birds to breed and nest there. Apparently, the land was sold a few times and the council planners came to have a look when units were discussed. However, the neighbours were assured that this would never happen as the block was not suitable. Last week several men turned up with heavy machinery and started to knock down the trees, Council was contacted to find out what was happening and several documents were provided outlining the plans for an estate of nine small 600m2 blocks of land that did not require public consultation. 22
What surprised the residents was that no sign was erected at the block to announce the changes. They believed they had the right to know as it will affect those living in the area. The resident said they were all devastated and don't know now where to turn. This is a common problem brought to us by readers across the region. Suddenly a development happens next door or down the street and the locals knew nothing about it. In this case, the block of land is zoned for low density residential. The council planner was right in that no units are allowed (that falls under a

Raelene Ellis Advocating for people’s rights is something lawyer and Greens candidate for Division 1 in the Sunshine Coast Council elections, Raelene Ellis, has been passionate about for the past 15 years. Enduring Power of Attorney It is our opinion that everyone must have an Enduring Power of Attorney. This, unfortunately, regularly happens to people who do not have an Enduring Power of Attorney and who find themselves in hospital but are assessed as not being able to return home. If they are incapable of making an Enduring Power of Attorney then an Application needs to be made through QCAT to the Guardianship and Administration Tribunal for an Order. Such an Order can take a considerable period of time and involves a great deal of work. It also can lead to ill-will and disputes between your loved ones.

Another historic ace
Just days after the Maleny Golf Club officially opened its 18-hole layout for play, 69-year-old Seri Tytherleigh teed off for the first time on the new opening par 3 hole and watched in awe as her ball rolled across the green and trickled into the cup. Seri and her three playing partners were taking part in the first Wednesday ladies competition to be held on the expanded course following the opening of the final six holes the previous Saturday. “I’d watched the others using their irons but decided to use my driver, which I know I can hit up quite high and the ball landed on the slope to the right of the pin and then rolled across the green into the hole,” Seri said. She was shedding tears of joy and could hardly speak after scoring her first hole-in-one. Her 106m ace from the red markers will also be recorded as the first by a member during competition on the challenging downhill hole. Thrilled playing partner Penny Edwards had urged her friend to put the prized Titleist ball back in her golf bag for mounting later. However, Seri failed to heed this sage advice and inadvertently drove the ball deep into a hazard on the next hole. “Oh well, I had one more of those balls in my bag so that’s the one being used for the trophy,” Seri lamented. Champagne and chocolates subsequently figured in joyous clubhouse celebrations. Seri’s name will now join those of just a handful of members immortalised on the club’s Terry Lee Memorial hole-in-one honour board. President Jeff Kruse said all members of the young golf club were delighted to be celebrating another historic hole-in-one on the course less than a week after the hole was opened for play.

Volunteering at Glasshouse Views Volunteering is a great way to connect with others in your community and locally there is an opportunity to be part of the volunteering program at McKenzie Aged Care’s Glasshouse Views. All of McKenzie Aged Care residences offer fun and exciting lifestyle programs, and volunteers greatly contribute to the success of these activities. Becoming a volunteer not only gives you the opportunity to meet new friends, learn new skills and share experiences but also connects you to a
group of like-minded people working together to achieve the best for the residents and the local community. There are many ways you can volunteer, ranging from assisting with the many fun activities taking place, to reading the newspaper to a resident, chatting with residents or simply helping out in the office. Volunteering doesn’t have to be a regular commitment and as little as an hour a week can make a valuable difference to the lives of residents. Lifestyle coordinator at Glasshouse Views Trina Haylock said there were currently two volunteers who run the café and coffee club each week but this was only a small part of what they do. “They help residents with games such as bingo and hoy, they help sort and clean equipment, Anicia sews, Mary visits several residents for a chat, they are always happy to make a cup of tea or coffee and have a chat any time,” Trina said. “Anicia has been with us for two years and Mary for five years and they both love to sing, dress up and have fun and always have a smile on their faces." With March already here Glass House Mountains Probus is getting ready for its annual general meeting. The club members hope more active retirees will join them after they welcomed three new members last month. This month the fun, friendship and fellowship will continue with mystery items to be brought for display by members. The items need to be unusual, not necessarily unique or antique, but something that causes members to puzzle over their use, eg, something odd or old found in the shed or in the house. After the display, and time for working out possible uses and what-is-it guesses, the owner’s explanation will make it all clear. This is just one more of the fun things Probians do. Eighty of Isobel Siddans’s family and friends recently gathered at the Glass House Mountains Community Hall to help celebrate her 95th birthday. Isobel’s daughter Nancy McDonald said it was a lovely occasion that brought together five generations of the Siddans family. Isobel is a long-time resident of the local area, who has spent about 50 years living in Maleny, Glass House Mountains and Beerwah. Isobel joined the Australian Navy as soon as she was old enough in 1943 and, after completing her training, she was posted to Townsville. While serving there, she met Stan Siddans who was serving with the RAAF. Shortly after the war they were married and in late 1954 they moved with their five children to Maleny. They had a small dairy farm north of Maleny in Bridge Creek, formerly known as Frog’s Hollow. During their time at Maleny another three children joined their family. Isobel and Stan were very involved in the local Baptist Church and over the years groups of local Scouts regularly camped on their farm. Caring for her family and helping with the farm work meant Isobel, the former city girl, had to learn many new skills including milking and being able to improvise and make do. Sadly in 1961, a fire, believed to have started in a kerosene fridge, burnt their home at Bridge Creek to the ground. Shortly after the fire, the family moved closer to Brisbane but Isobel and Stan returned to the hinterland to retire in 1985, living in Glass House Mountains and Beerwah. Local residents may remember Stan as Stan the Whip Man who made and sold his whips. He died in 2012. In 2015, Isobel returned to the Blackall Range, residing in the Maleny area for a number of years. These days she is a resident of Abbey Gardens Aged Care in Morayfield, where Isobel enjoys visits from many of her 81 direct descendants including eight children, 28 grandchildren, 43 great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren and another one with due in March.

Health &Wellbeing Queensland first for local cancer patients

Cancer patients in the Sunshine Coast region now have access to state-of-the-art medical imaging equipment for radiation treatment planning. Health Minister Steven Miles said the Queensland Government was investing more than $650,000 in specialised imaging equipment known as an MRI simulator. “This new equipment will mean cancer patients will no longer have to sit in the MRI for up to 40 minutes. In fact, they can get that down to just ten minutes," Mr Miles said.
“That’s better for the comfort of the patient but also frees up the MRI for even more people.” The funding has allowed an existing MRI scanner at Sunshine Coast University Hospital to be upgraded so it can accurately simulate the radiotherapy treatment environment. The purchase includes new MRI-safe positioning equipment and a hand-held 3D surface scanner. Radiation oncologist Dr Myo Min said the improved accuracy and information with an MRI simulator allowed treatments to be tailored even more closely to individual patients' needs.

Shannon Greenwood, owner of Hinterland Body & Soul, says the salon is still operating at its current location within The Fat Frenchman café while they are busy getting the new clinic on Peachester Road set up. Shannon, who works with her daughter Jennifer, said they were excited seeing the new premises, next door to Subway at Beerwah, taking shape. The space is larger, which means they will be able to expand to two treatment rooms, and the new location will give clients improved access. If everything goes to plan they expect to be seeing clients in the new premises from the end of March. Keep an eye on their Facebook page to see the work in progress.

Last week our advertising rep Tina and I decided to head out of the office for our planning meeting and embrace the great outdoors. I know not everyone would consider the outside dining area at the Peachester Café and Bakery as getting back to nature but you might be surprised at what a tranquil little spot it can be beside their lovely water garden. When you spend a lot of time sitting in front of a computer screen it is nice to get out of the office any day of the week to enjoy a great coffee and, in my case, an awesome breakfast. I regularly bang on about how much I love a breakfast menu, particularly one that is all-day, and this café definitely delivers on choice with loads of brekkie options. I went for the vegetarian big breakfast, which was amazing. It was a tough choice with every different type of breakfast available. As it was lunch time when we arrived, Tina was keen to try something from their tempting cabinet, including almost 20 different pie options baked each day on the premises. She went for the satay chicken pie with salad but the range of pies they have is simply amazing. A hot tip is that it isn’t just the pies that are popular. In the cabinet they also have sausage rolls, vege rolls, spinach and feta, pumpkin and sweet potato rolls, smokey rolls, quiche and frittata. If you haven’t popped into the Peachester Café you will be surprised what a hidden gem it is, with the locals happy to keep it to themselves.

In Recital in Maleny
It was a full house at Scone Time held at the Bankfoot House Heritage Precint last week with plenty of locals enjoying a scone with jam and cream and a lovely cup of tea. Sunshine Coast Council is keen to see the event happening quarterly with dates confirmed for June 4 and September 3 this year. Keep an eye out for booking details closer to the time.
Each year the Maleny Arts Council brings high calibre artists to Maleny to share their talents with local audiences. The recent Sunday afternoon In Recital was the first event for the 2020 season, with 160 people enjoying the show. It was an intimate performance of sublime violin and piano music featuring two very talented musicians – violinist Brendan Joyce and pianist Alex Raineri – who presented a varied program including works by Schumann and Messiaen. Here’s a continuation of my rundown on important soil nutrients. Calcium (Ca) Calcium is essential for root health, growth of new roots and root hairs, and the development of leaves. Lime, gypsum and dolomite all supply calcium. Magnesium (Mg) Magnesium is a key component of chlorophyll, the green colouring material of plants, and is vital for photosynthesis (the conversion of the sun's energy to food for the plant). Deficiencies occur mainly in sandy acid soils in high rainfall areas. Heavy applications of potassium in fertilisers can also produce magnesium deficiency. Magnesium deficiency can be overcome with dolomite, magnesite or Epsom salts. Sulphur (S) Sulphur is a constituent of amino acids in plant proteins and is involved in energy-producing processes in plants. It is responsible for many flavour and odour compounds in plants such as the aroma of onions. Sulphur deficiency is not a problem in soils high in organic matter but it leaches easily. Superphosphate, gypsum, elemental sulphur and sulphate of ammonia are the main sources. Trace elements Iron (Fe) Iron is a constituent of many compounds that regulate and promote growth. Manganese (Mn) Manganese helps with photosynthesis. It is freely available in acid soils but can be deficient in sandy soils. High manganese toxicity is remedied with lime. Copper (Cu) Copper is an essential constituent of enzymes in plants. Copper toxicity can be a problem for gardeners who regularly use Bordeaux mixture or copper oxychloride sprays. Zinc (Zn) Zinc helps in the production of a plant hormone responsible for stem elongation and leaf expansion. Deficiencies can be remedied with the addition of zinc sulphate or crushed zinc minerals. Fruit trees can be sprayed with zinc. Boron (B) Boron helps with the formation of cell walls in rapidly growing tissue. Deficiency reduces the uptake of calcium and inhibits the plant's ability to use it. Deficiencies are easily remedied with borax applied to the soil. Molybdenum (Mo) Molybdenum helps bacteria and soil organisms convert nitrogen in the air to soluble nitrogen compounds in the soil, so is particularly needed by legumes. It is also essential in the formation of proteins from soluble nitrogen compounds.

I love sudokus. I always carry a book with me, so much so that I’m known in some places as Sudoku Man. Mathematics was my career profession until God called me to ordination. As soon as sudokus hit Australia, I decided to find out how they work. Only in the past few weeks have I connected my sudoku activity to my father’s passion for amateur radio. It started when he was a boy in Roma in the 1920s. Later, he was in signals on the Kokoda Track. When he came home late at night from work, we would often find circuit diagrams on the kitchen table. It was his way of winding down. And coping with what we now recognise as his PTSD. Sudokus and circuits are safe. Their logic is steady and safe and predictable. Except life isn’t. I became a Christian by deliberate choice in my late teens and eventually signed up with the Anglicans. The more I read the gospels attentively, as all Christians but especially preachers must, the more I see Jesus side-stepping the everyday dogeat-dog competition for survival. Surely these are shocking. Blessed are the poor in spirit. Those who mourn. The meek. Those who hunger and thirst for what is right. The merciful. The pure in heart. The peacemakers. The persecuted. Well, that lot is just asking to be trodden on, aren’t they? Except in the extra depths of God’s love for all creation, and the logic that underpins it and drives it forward, that’s where the action really is. Sudokus and circuits cannot hold a candle to it. Because that’s where truth and healing are really found.

Glasshouse Country Horse and Pony Club The club will hold an open sporting day at Beerwah Sportsground this Sunday, March 15 from 9am. Events will include bending, running tee, bounce pony, drum and peg, diamond flag, sporting figure of 8, bond-field bend, stock horse, mug race and skudda HO. Groups competing on the day will be aged 7 and 8, 9 and 10, 11 and 12, 13 and 14, 15 and 16, 17 and U26, and associates and seniors. Nominations are via Omnisport and the cost is $25 or on the day. For riders who are not Pony Club Association of Queensland members there will also be a $10 insurance levy. The club operates from 32 Sportsground Drive, Beerwah. All welcome to come along. Our U14 boys started their comp against Nambour Yandina FC on Saturday morning and after a few quick early goals by Nambour Yandina in the first half, the BeeGees boys got their tempo back and managed to take out the win 5-3. Goals to J Howland (3), J Nolan-Freeman and J Kaukereit. The McDonald’s Premier and Reserve men’s competition started as an away game on Saturday afternoon against the Maroochydore Swans FC. BeeGees Reserve lost their first game 5-0, a disappointing start but will be looking at improvements over the coming weeks. The Premier team came away with a 4-2 win. Goals to C Nairn (2), M Fichtner and Z Carew. Great start for the Green Machine! Been There Done That (BTDT) player of the match went to Tai Sakshui. This weekend sees all our competition teams taking to the field in away games. U12 girls will have a grading carnival this Saturday, March 14 at Caloundra FC. Our mini roos started training last week under the guidance of our newly appointed junior club coach coordinator Andrew Nairn. The mini roo games will kick off on the weekend of March 28.

The winner was Jennifer Kelly on 35 points from Andrea Campbell 33 points. NTPs: 2 - Karen Gannon, 5 - Sonia Kenway, 16 - Meg Ferran, 18 (second shot) - Helen Lewis. BRD went to 32 points. Thursday, March 5 was a monthly medal with 47 ladies. Nett winner for division one was Sonia Kenway 75 nett from Helen Lewis 76 nett. Division two winner was Monica Dangerfield 74 nett followed by Pauline Laurie 75 nett. Division three winner Marj Pavitt 75 nett on a count back from Marie Norton 75 nett. Gross winner in division one Andrea Campbell on 89, division two - Carol Cork on 97 and division three - Beth Abraham on 106. Contributed by Pauline Fraley After a very late start, Witta Wagtails were defeated by Eumundi Miss Gems but the tennis was enjoyed and followed by a pleasant lunch. Thanks to the Wagtails team - Gerry Gabriel, Jan Maguire, Sonia Douglas and Sheryn Golledge. The Wildcats were at home to Nambas No Faults. Great tennis, long rallies and a bit of rain didn’t put anybody off. It was extremely close all day long. Final score was four sets each, 39-40. One game! The team was Pauline Fraley, Annie Stewart, Stacey English and Libby Howlett. The Witta Wikings went down 5-7 sets to Nambas Menaces in a rain interrupted match. The courts and balls were wet and heavy, which allowed the home team to take the advantage. The player of the day was Stacey English who won all of her sets. Glenn Smith also played exceptionally well enjoying the hard hitting. Whistlers and the Woompoos had the bye. Monday night Get Your Racquet On is becoming very popular. Lucky draw went to Barb McNeill and Len Skerry. Friday, March 6: Round four of the high school challenge -, Beerwah State High vs Glasshouse Christian College (GCC). Winners were GCC’s Riley Pollock and Riley Patterson with two wins + 23. Runners up were BSHS’s Jack Chirgwin and Chloe Runge with two wins + 17. Overall it is 28 all, with Beerwah ahead on a + 50 margin. Saturday, March 7: Men’s GR8s, division five home to Kawana. After a rickety start, our team kept their cool and clawed back to defeat the leading team to reach top spot in our section and move into the quarter finals. Ladies division 5 - home to Coolum Beach. We maintained our dominance to defeat Coolum Beach and now progress to the quarter finals. Q7s division four round nine - home to Dayboro. Despite the final result with Dayboro’s combined score being one shot behind, Dayboro won on the rink wins to take the points. Our teams showed great sporting spirit and determination to play some great shots. Q7s division five - home to Kallangur. All three games were very close throughout with the lead changing constantly. Unfortunately, Kallangur took out all three rinks and won the day. All our players should be proud of their efforts against a very strong team. For those who came down to enjoy watching the games both morning and afternoon, we thank you. The growing awareness in our community of the fantastic facilities at Club Glass House and the enjoyment of relaxing on the deck to watch fantastic bowls adds to the atmosphere for those on the green and helps us lift our game another notch.
The Range Croquet Club
Contributed by Ken Barker It looked like it would be a wash out on Thursday, February 27. A quartet of gambling spirits let the weather wheel spin and came up with a good game in which Sarah Widin and Bev Sockhill teamed up to trounce Wallace Roy and Nick Cram 13–8. Ken Barker played at Bribie Island on the weekend of February 29-March 1 in the Steve Jones tournament. He had one win from seven games. He would like to thank Bribie for hosting a wonderful tournament. Dave Luxmore from Burleigh Heads club was the eventual winner. On Sunday, March 1 Nick defeated Vince Carbery 17-13, while Stuart Craig and Sarah convincingly beat Helen Andrews and Wallace 11-9. We have had a busy week on the lawn with The Range Care visiting on the Tuesday and a caravan group on the Wednesday. Both days went well and thanks to those club members who turned out to help. Coaching for beginners and others is available from 8-10 am on Saturdays. These are popular sessions with accredited coaches in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere.
