Hi Everyone... It was lovely to wake up early on Saturday morning to the sound of heavy rain on our tin roof and I thought to myself … ahhh, wouldn’t it be nice to stay home and hibernate today. Sadly that just isn’t possible with my job. If I didn’t get up and head to the Beerwah CWA bake sale it would have meant I would have ¾ of a page of blank space this week with just an ‘Out and About’ heading at the top of a page, which probably wasn’t a great idea. As I arrived at the hall just in time for their 9am opening, the sun was shining and there was already quite a few happy sweet treat eaters lining up to check out what was on offer. It was lovely to be able to chat to the enthusiastic ladies who had been busy baking for the stall and were happy to be part of this great fundraising initiative for the CWA’s Public Rural Crisis Fund. And I also managed to impress my morning tea guests on Sunday with the rather lovely chocolate banana cake I had purchased. Good thing they didn’t ask me for the recipe!

Cover Story Scone Time comes to Bankfoot House The excitement is building for scone lovers of Glasshouse Country who plan to attend the area’s first Scone Time to be held at the Bankfoot House Heritage Precinct at Glass House Mountains this Thursday, March 5 from 10am-12noon. Chef Martin Duncan (aka Sunshine Coast Foodie) has successfully hosted 18 Scone Time events across the Sunshine Coast and Noosa Shire since 2018, including at the Montville Village Hall, with the goal of providing seniors with an opportunity to attend a regular social event. The events are open to all and are a wonderful opportunity particularly for older people, along with their carers, companions and family, to come together and enjoy each other’s company as well as a scrumptious morning tea and some lovely musical entertainment for just $8. So why not grab a friend, acquaintance or put a group together to head along. While you’re there you can also view the current exhibition Memories of Scotland and enjoy a great insight into our early settlement years through a free guided tour of Bankfoot House. The current exhibition in the Mary Grigor Centre,

Visitors will be able to embark on a journey of discovery through the highlands of Scotland, profiling the Grigor’s Scottish home towns of Bankfoot, Perthshire and the Black Isles. How good is your ABC public meeting How good is your ABC is the topic for a public meeting to be held at the Maleny Community Centre on Tuesday, March 31 at 7pm, organised jointly by ABC Friends Queensland and ABC Alumni. Featured speakers will be Quentin Dempster, Dr Mark Hayes and Bianca Clare from ABC Sunshine Coast. ABC Friends Queensland president Ross McDowell said the meeting had been organised in Maleny to reinforce how the ABC benefitted and represented rural and regional Australia. “Too many meetings of this kind occur in a capital city. ABC Friends has a lively membership in the Maleny area and we want to offer locals the opportunity of hearing and seeing a small part of what the ABC does by two former ABC employees and a current ABC employee," Mr McDowell said. “We’re well aware of some critical views of the ABC as being ‘the un-Australian broadcaster’, which allegedly has ‘changed its focus from journalism to lobbying’, so here’s an opportunity for ABC users and interested or sceptical members of the public, taxpayers who fund the public broadcaster, to see and hear something of how the ABC has contributed to Australia recently, 30 years ago and looming threats to Australia’s public broadcaster,” he said. In 2017-18 there were 256 events, a figure that had been surpassed by mid-September 2019. Ms Clare said emergencies erupt quickly, like the Peregian fires late in 2019, and escalate fast, so the ABC has to use extensive local knowledge and contacts to make sure its information is accurate. "It's seat of the pants, minute by minute broadcasting," Ms Clare said. "I'll be explaining, and showing examples of ABC Sunshine Coast Emergency and discussing how we did that important broadcasting." Mark Davis Candidate for Division 1 Mark Davis from Caloundra West recently announced his decision to run in Division 1 in the upcoming Sunshine Coast Council election, saying he believes the division can and will lead the way on the Sunshine Coast for business, employment, IT and lifestyle. “I have spent 20 years working with business chambers and our family business, and have been privileged to serve as a councillor. It is this experience I bring to the table,” Mark said. “We are at the doorstep of the developing worldclass infrastructure that is the undersea cable, and this will be a magnet for skilled professionals to move to the coast. “Then there is the once in a lifetime opportunity that is the Olympic Games. “These games have the potential to give us the vital transport network upgrades we so desperately need. “The introduction of CCTV in the business areas of each town and potential trouble spots, can be part of the planning phase of new developments,” he said. “With a larger population looking to grow by over 200,000 by 2040, it is a sensible approach to have this safety-first attitude, keeping the great value we all place on our physical safety. “In the light of the recent fires in Australia, the evidence is there to take the hazard reduction burning of forest areas more seriously and in particular the sensible removal of fuel near homes and other buildings. “Further evidence suggests that our First Nations Peoples are well trained in this preparation for healthy forested areas. Along with this is the flow-on of the safety of the native wildlife. “With the right partnerships in place we can avoid the catastrophic outcomes of the past few months. We cannot afford to neglect it any longer,” Mark said. “The Sunshine Coast amazes everyone who visits, and spoils everyone fortunate enough to live here. In Division 1 we have some growing pains, so let’s work together and fix them. We also have unprecedented opportunities so let’s make the most of them. Smiles for miles

By Sonia Clark The simple yet effective idea to create little bags of new, non-perishable items to be collated and distributed to children affected by the recent bushfire events was featured in GC&M News in late January. We told you about Smile Bags, the wonderful local initiative organised by Krystal Kirk from Landsborough. Fifteen donation drop points were arranged with local GC&M News’s Jess businesses and organisations from Noosa to Maleny, Thompson gives Krystal Kirk as well as a donation drop location in Brisbane. the donations GC&M News was also happy to get on board by providing local coverage and a donation point at our Glass House Mountains office. We were pleased to see a very generous local response with a large number of donations dropped off to support the project. On Saturday, February 8, Krystal arranged a smile bagging party at her home and, along with seven other gal pals, the group was able to put together an impressive 422 bags packed with around 12 items each that were suitable for children aged up to 15 years. Krystal said it had been so wonderful to see the generosity of everyday people. "People have been so giving and I am so appreciative and humbled by their generosity, for not only bringing this initiative to life but making it more than I ever could have dreamed of," Krystal said. The Smile Bags travelled to schools in the Kempsey Shire in NSW, which was devastated by fires at the end of last year. Morgan's Long Distance Transport generously offered to transport all bags into Kempsey and surrounding regions from its depot in Yandina. Krystal said initially the bags would be distributed by local community bushfire support volunteers to schools and children in the Macleay Valley and then onto Taylors Arm and Bowraville north of Kempsey. All areas sadly suffered greatly in the recent bush fires. Any left-over bags were forwarded to surrounding areas. For updates on the delivery progress go to Smile Bags Facebook page.

Community News Conservation milestone

Australia Zoo is celebrating an important conservation feat - the arrival of a gorgeous echidna puggle! This new addition to the Australia Zoo family arrived just the size of a jelly bean in September 2019 to mum Blue. Along with the platypus, the echidna is the only other egg-laying mammal in Australia, known as a monotreme. Just one month after mating, the female lays a single egg into her pouch, which hatches ten days later. Becky-Jo Quinn, mammal keeper at the zoo, said this birth was a significant achievement as it was only the second echidna born at the zoo. “The team are ecstatic about the arrival of this echidna puggle. Our first puggle born at Australia Zoo was Blue, the mother of this little one, so it’s a very special baby,” Becky-Jo said. “Breeding echidnas can be a very complex process. They like certain temperatures and conditions and because the egg is laid into the mother's pouch, it’s often difficult to tell when it has hatched." Some populations and subspecies of echidna found in Australia are classed as endangered and following the disastrous bush fires Australia has experienced in recent months, it is unclear how these populations have been impacted. It is difficult to determine the sex of echidnas until they are over a year old but Australia Zoo is inviting Wildlife Warriors from around the world to help name this spiky bundle of joy. “Given we don’t know if our echidna puggle is a little boy or girl we are encouraging everyone to come up with gender neutral names via our social media competition – we can’t wait to have a name,” Becky-Jo said. World class bridge teacher visits Maleny

The Maleny Contract Bridge Club was pleased to host one of Australia’s leading bridge identities, Paul Marston, at its new clubhouse recently. The event, titled The Maleny Adventure, attracted more than 75 participants with some travelling from as far as the Toogoolawah. Paul has won more than 50 national and international titles, is the owner of bridge clubs in both Sydney and Canberra, and has published multiple books. Paul was assisted on the day by Nevena Djurovic, also one of Australia’s top bridge players. This was Paul's first trip to Maleny and he was impressed with the idyllic setting and warm reception. “A functional design with excellent equipment and the generous catering, which just sprung out of nowhere. You don’t get that in the big cities”, Paul said. The event focussed on learning more about competitive bidding and the feedback from participants was resoundingly positive with consensus that the teaching was inspiring and informative. Maleny Contract Bridge Club is located at the end of Parklands Drive, which connects from Porters Lane in the Precinct. Landsborough firies appreciate support Landsborough Rural Fire Brigade (LRFB) first officer Mark Jakeman was pleased to recently receive the keys to the brigade's latest addition to their vehicle fleet, an Isuzu D-Max dual cab ute that will be known as Landsborough 81. “This vehicle is to be used as an operational support vehicle for our brigade and throughout the area, and it would not have been possible without the support of our community and Pacific Isuzu Noosaville,” Mark said. “Our brigade would like to sincerely thank local community members, businesses and other community groups for the generous donations and support that we have received since the recent bush fires both locally and interstate." Brigade secretary Helen Jakeman said the brigade had received donations from community groups and local businesses including Landsborough Hotel, Landsborough IGA, Landsborough Pines Caravan Park, Landsborough Craft Group, Landsborough Markets, Landsborough Hall, Beerwah Lions Club, Beaver Master Scouts, Community Recycling Beerwah, Mooloolah Valley Community Association, Beerwah Writers Group, the RSL and the Glasshouse Country Senior Citizens Club. “In addition we have received many cash donations from individuals either directly to the brigade or by attending fundraising events and in donation buckets at various local events, in particular the Beerwah carols night where over $900 was raised, and for which we would like to say a very big thank you to our wonderful community,” Helen said. With the combination of donations and the Sunshine Coast Council fire levy, the brigade is able to continually update equipment at its fire shed as well as its vehicles. The brigade has also recently upgraded its #51 vehicle with a car fridge, hose reels made automatic and a brand new GAAM pump fitted on the back of the vehicle. “After all the great rain we have received our extremely busy 2019 fire season is now over and we would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the volunteers not only from our brigade but from all the local rural fire brigades for their commitment and outstanding effort during these last few months,” Mark said.

Vale Aileen Winterhoff

Glass House Mountains local Aileen Winterhoff died on Monday, February 17, aged 84 years, and last Thursday friends of Aileen and her husband John came together with her family for a celebration of her life at the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club. The event celebrated Aileen’s love of life and acknowledged the role she played in her family and the contribution she had made over many years to her local community. Aileen was born in Pomona on Christmas Day 1935, the oldest of eight children, which her son Mark Beanland attributes to being a factor in developing his Mum’s organisation skills, her work ethic and certainly her love of family. With her father’s work, they moved around a bit and eventually settled in Jimna where Aileen spent all of her formative years. One of Aileen’s great passions was dancing and in her teenage years she attended dances from Mount Mee to Palmwoods and it was at dances that she met both the men who she would spend most of her life with. At a dance in 1953, she met a persistent young man named Reg Beanland and on May 5, 1956 they were married. The couple moved into a weatherboard home on Littles Road in Glass House Mountains and in 1965 they bought a pineapple farm on Sargeants Road. Aileen was kept busy working on the farm, keeping house and looking after her husband and three children, putting her organisational skills to the test. This marriage ended in 1989 and it was through her love of dance that Aileen and John Winterhoff became good friends at the dances they attended. They eventually became a couple and married in 1997. For many years John and Aileen have been executive members of the Glass House Mountains Hall committee, where Aileen organised the monthly dances. She also spent some time as a volunteer for the Red Cross, helping to serve drinks and refreshments to blood donors when the Blood Bank bus was in town. She was also a member of the Glasshouse Mountains Tennis Club for a number of years. She was very community minded and, like a lot of other mothers, was involved in fundraising activities for the primary school, the church and some of the sports that her children were involved in. She made cakes and biscuits for food stalls, helped cater at dances and cent sales, and helped out at school sports days. She was also a very committed Sunday school teacher who was liked and respected by the children in her group. Mark said she gained great pleasure from helping or doing things for other people, be it family or others in the community. “She liked to be busy and useful and, at times, it seemed like she had an endless supply of energy. Unfortunately, it had to run out at some stage,” he said.

Local water heads south

Welcome to hinterland dinner on again

Sunshine Coast dams will start supplementing Brisbane’s water supply from this week following the recent rain. Natural Resources Minister Dr Anthony Lynham said that with the Sunshine Coast’s main water supply, Baroon Pocket Dam, at just over 97 per cent capacity, Seqwater would reverse the flow of the South East Queensland water grid between the Sunshine Coast and Brisbane. At the start of summer falling dam levels on the Sunshine Coast meant the water grid was being used to supplement Sunshine Coast supplies. Now Sunshine Coast is returning the favour. “After more than 10,000 megalitres of inflow over the past week, Baroon Pocket is almost full while Wivenhoe remains just over 50 per cent,” Dr Lynham said. “Despite receiving its best inflows in recent years, our biggest single water storage, Wivenhoe Dam, remains at its lowest level in more than a decade. “The foresight of previous Labor governments in building the grid gave South East Queensland one of the most reliable water supplies in Australia," he said Seqwater CEO Neil Brennan said changing the flow direction of bulk water supply pipelines was all part of normal operations at Seqwater. “We are operating the grid to best preserve water supply in Wivenhoe as we head into the traditionally drier months of autumn and winter,’’ he said. The long-awaited rainfall this month occurred mostly along coastal catchments with the Sunshine and Gold coasts recording rainfalls in excess of 400mm. Other Sunshine Coast dams are now either at or nearing full capacity, including Ewen Maddock (98.3 per cent). The Bureau of Meteorology outlook for autumn is for below average rainfall with hotter and drier than normal conditions forecast for South East Queensland.

Organisers of this year's welcome to the hinterland dinner are excited that the event will be the first run by the new Lions Club of Blackall Range. The club’s liaison officer, Peter Jensen, said the dinner on Wednesday, April 22 at Flaxton Gardens was open to all new residents of Montville, Hunchy, Flaxton, Mapleton and surrounds to come along, meet other locals and make new friends. “This will be our sixth annual event. Each year has sold out with around 600 people having attended over the past five years, including new residents, members of Lions, real estate agents, businesses and other community organisations in the area. It is always a nice night out, and the food and company are excellent,” Peter said.

The choir will be supported by the recently formed Sunshine Brass led by Keith Dowsett. 60 years for Maleny Apex Club The Maleny Showground pavilion will host past, present and future members of the Apex Club of Maleny in late March to celebrate 60 years of community involvement. Hinterland residents and businesses will also be familiar with the Apex Business Directory and this year marks 40 years since it first went to print. The club is preparing for the celebrations and current president Aidan Titheradge has confirmed that the first Maleny Apex president Arnold Wolff and three other founding members will be attending. “As the current president, I’m really looking forward to welcoming Arnold and the founding members back to Maleny and celebrating their achievements with the club,” Aidan said. Aidan is a third generation Apex member, with his father Craig Titheradge serving before him in Maleny and his grandfather a life member at the Ingham club. “Our club is actually increasing its member numbers and I think it’s testament to our strong commitment to community service and supporting those individuals, groups and organisations who need our help," Aidan said. “It might be mowing lawns, concreting, building works, running barbeques at events to raise funds or donating to individuals who need assistance to participate in sporting and academic events around Australia,” he said. Community Groups Local preparation for natural disasters

Maleny Knitfest full steam ahead

Community organisations and services across Glasshouse Country have created a local network to channel communication between emergency services and the local community, and to share resources in preparation for natural disasters. Facilitator of the network and local community development worker from the Caloundra Community Centre, Natasha Odgers, said this was an exciting and important step for Glasshouse Country. "Momentum is being generated across a range of community groups and services to not only connect but to be proactive for times when the more extreme natural disasters hit our area," Natasha said. After three formative workshops held last year, the first meeting of the network was held recently where representatives started to plan for a severe cyclone scenario. This will be followed by a focus on bush fires. A handbook is also being put together for the network to have all essential information in one shared document. This network is a community-led initiative based on the voluntary goodwill of people in our area to do what they can, when they can, to work alongside emergency services in times of need. The internal rooms have been named The Morgan Room and The Gilvear Room. These families were chosen as they are most appropriately representative of the culture and

You Said It Irresponsible dog owner

On Tuesday, February 18 while walking my 13 year-old female kelpie dog just down from the corner of Coonowrin and Poole roads in Glass House Mountains, we were attacked by two Staffy-like bull terriers, light caramel and white in colours. One bigger than the other. Working in a pack mentality, and with great force and intention to kill, the smaller, more rabid dog latched on to my dog around its neck while the other was attempting to do its deed. While trying not to get bitten myself, adrenaline set in and, luckily, I managed to get the more vicious one off my dog. I pulled a flimsy strap around its neck and up onto its back legs while attempting to kick off the bigger one off as well. This happened all within seconds and not being a spring chicken, I was struggling to keep them away from my dog. With luck, a nice young lady in a white van gave us refuge in the van, while both her and a young workman in a silver Navara tried to hold back the dogs. No thanks to the irresponsible owner who drove up in his vehicle more concerned about his dogs than to check on our wellbeing. In the meantime, I was trying to calm both myself and my dog down from the shock of being attacked. I was too afraid to leave until the dogs were gone. A big thank you to the kind people for your assistance in saving my dog and myself from being mauled. To the dog’s owner, thank you for your lack of empathy. Losing our animals and birds

Recently an ABC article from the science reporter Nick Kilvert (former wildlife ecologist) on the future of Australia's wildlife was stark (ABC Science, February 6). He said "ongoing degradation of ecosystems, and the fragmenting of wildlife into smaller and smaller patches of habitat, has left our ecosystems vulnerable". This summer, bushfires have wiped out an estimated one billion animals. The system we use here to protect species when land is to be developed or cleared is faulty. It’s what's called an offset system, which means if an area is to be lost to development then the developer has to offset it with another area elsewhere. Often this does not happen, or it fails to protect a vulnerable species. Kilvert wrote: "Every environmental impact statement I worked on for coal, coal-seam gas, gas refinery, bauxite, housing estates and airport expansion projects during a three-and-a-bit year period found species listed as vulnerable or endangered. "These included koalas, ornamental snakes, water mice, rock wallabies and countless nonlisted species like sugar gliders, dunnarts and bettongs. They were going to be killed during the development phase, or by starvation or displacement." In Queensland the LNP government relaxed clearing laws in 2013 and we lost about 300,000 hectares a year from then, much of it threatened ecosystems and species habitat. Offsets are meant to be triggered when species are listed as critically endangered, endangered or vulnerable under the federal Environment Act (EPBC Act) but 7.7 million hectares of threatened species habitat has been cleared since the Act 18

was introduced in 1999, and only 7% of that was referred for government scrutiny. Our environmental protection laws, including offsets, have allowed us to lose so much endemic wildlife then the fires came. We now have a doubly serious loss, which is near breaking point. Less secrecy and greater transparency

The outgoing Sunshine Coast Council has been slammed for its behind-closed-doors decisionmaking record. As the Greens’ candidate for Division 5 in the upcoming council elections, I say ratepayers are entitled to clarity over what councillors bring to the table in their discussions. OSCAR Inc reports that since April 2016 the Sunshine Coast Council met in confidence 208 times. Compare that with the 17 closed-door meetings Noosa Council held in the same period and, clearly, residents want to know why. Residents have a right to know what their elected officials are saying when it comes to allocating funds and extending permissions. We need to end the secrecy around business deals and the constant requirement for secret council business. Under the Greens’ policy, councillors’ conflicts of interest in any matter will have to be declared and made public a full day prior to council agenda items, so the public can have their say before the matter is heard, and signed off. I will also advocate for an anonymous whistleblower program to report corruption, which would help rout out any networks of greed from within a council. I challenge all Sunshine Coast Council candidates to declare any relationships they may have with politically influential identities. Many local government candidates have run as politically independent but in reality have ties with political parties. By running as a candidate for the Greens, people know what I stand for. I am being honest, consistent and upfront about my values and priorities. The Greens cannot be bought. Council should no longer operate under veils of secrecy where public mistrust breeds. Homo sapiens means wise man

What a joke! If we are so wise then why have we annihilated about two-thirds of nature (not including us) causing massive insect die off! Increased CO2 levels are causing rapid climate change 100 or more times faster than is normal and we have not had 415 parts per million in over a million years according to science, so never since humans have been here. Doubled our population in just 50 years and added diabolically destructive demands on the only known planet that supports life in the universe. Using up resources at insatiably unsustainable rates allowing very little left for the future generations! We have used so much sand we are now running out (desert sand cannot be used if that is what you are thinking). Deforestation levels that are so unbelievably idiotic it astounds me. Trees provide about 50%

of our oxygen, so every second breath you take. They create rain and provide habitat for nature. Complex life on Earth would not exist without them. We have acidified our oceans and the abundance of zooplankton is depleting. This is where we get the other 50% of our oxygen. We have added so much space junk into the atmosphere that it has become a serious problem and yet we still add lots more. Australia has more than 2,000 flora and fauna at serious risk of becoming extinct and all in less 250 years. We invented plastics over 50 years ago and now look at the severe scourge it has become touching everywhere on the planet, including inside of us. I could go on and on. Humans are not wise at all in my opinion because if you wanted to create a pathway to total destruction you would just continue on the path we are on. How things have changed

In June last year, Detective Gary Jubelin of the NSW Police was charged with four breaches of the Surveillance Devices Act in relation to the William Tyrrell investigation, with the case recently being heard in a Sydney court. I think the community should have a little background on this supposed disgraced police officer who I first met and worked with in 1989 at Hornsby Police Station. At the time he was a young married man and I was a sergeant on general duties. Gary was a fellow you couldn't help but notice. He was honest, tenacious and never backed off from anything he was involved in. He gave it his all. Having witnessed first-hand his work over many years, my opinion of him has not wavered and the NSW Police have lost a very good, honest policeman the day they decided to arrest and charge him. In relation to the current case of this missing little boy, William Tyrell, if he was my little boy I would want none other than Detective Inspector Gary Jubelin in charge, knowing he would leave no stone unturned. It’s hard to believe that such ugliness and ignorance can exist, and especially to someone who has been a long-standing community member. The Pineapple Patch restaurant has been a part of my memories growing up in the area and I would hate to see it struggle as a result of uneducated minds that should know better. Winston Johnston I am a lifelong resident of Division 5 having lived in both Woombye and Maleny. Currently, my wife Helen and I live in Maleny. Significant issues in Montville, Maleny, Witta, Conondale and districts are the lack of car parking; the need for additional footpaths and connecting links; regular maintenance of parks, roads and streets; control of invasive weeds; establishment of an off-lead dog area; town plan amendments to better cater for low cost housing; 2019 Local Government Area of home-based occupations; and a wider range Divisional Boundary broadening the ability of farmers to establish Review agricultural based industries, manufacturing and homestay facilities. FINAL DIVISIONAL InBOUNDARIES addition, residents want the main street SUNSHINE COAST REGIONAL revamp completed, a toilet provided in Cooke Division 5 Park, pedestrian crossing upgrades, support for LEGEND the provision of additional sporting amenities and greater emphasis on protection of the environment and waterways. Signage needs upgrading and intersections cleared of overgrown weeds and trees, as well as trees pruned so that school buses are not damaged. There are still many gravel roads and many need sealing to provide safe travel and to control the dust problem. I live in Montville. There are several key issues relevant to our town and others. However, I'd like to focus on how we preserve our amenity. Protection against inappropriate development across the hinterland has been relatively good from a regional/rural perspective but to continue this we do need to address the risks that the Queensland Government created in 2016 across planning and development legislation. The 2016 Planning Act has reduced transparency and accountability particularly in relation to code versus impact assessable development applications. This means that the community currently, and into the future, will have little or no say about local developments that may affect the amenity of our area. Other key issues I would like to focus on across Montville and our broader region include safety in and around local streets and school areas, noxious weed control and improved management of bushland. We have many vistas and waterways across our region that require an integrated effort between relevant government agencies and community groups. Parking in and around schools, visibility in high traffic areas and the maintenance of our verges will be very important in the future. Our local streets - and this is a whole of division issue - need more pathways and walkways to encourage walking and improve safety for those who do walk. www.traciesanim.com.au

I live on the cusp of Palmwoods, Chevallum and Eudlo and would like to see more attention to roadside curb maintenance, signage and street lighting. With almost 600km of council's unsealed roads being in rural areas, I would seek additional funding to bring forward their construction. It’s important to continue the upgrade of community halls and parks and keeping towns tidy. Managing traffic and providing efficient parking options to support both business and residents is vital. Unfortunately, rural areas are subject to motor bike speeding and noise pollution that requires a community awareness program as to the distressing impact often requiring police intervention. Encouraging residents to refrain from illegal dumping of waste, which is an eye sore and costly for council to clean up, requires an urgent resolution. The name of Eudlo originated from the local Aboriginal term for the fresh water eel (Anguilla reinhardtii). Eudlo has six roads leading into town, none of which has safe walking passage. When she was in year 7 my daughter addressed the Sunshine Coast councillors, convened at the Palmwoods Bowls Club, as part of her Eudlo State School public speaking course. She chose the issue of walking and bike paths for her road that leads to town - a road too dangerous to traverse by foot or bike. Today, Highlands Road is still a hazardous road for the many pedestrians and cyclists who jeopardise their safety in pursuit of travel or fitness. If elected it will be my task to consult with the relevant stakeholders and ensure that not only Eudlo has walking and cycling paths but, where possible, all our hinterland townspeople have the means to access the services and amenities on an equal footing to motorists. Now more than ever we need safe and accessible paths to exercise and traverse. I live at Mount Mellum. I would immediately increase the support to our local farmers. This isn’t just a local issue, it’s a regional issue that needs to be acted on instantly. Our farmers need all the support that they can get. They're doing it tough and many are too proud to ask for help. Over the past 10 years we've seen an exponential increase in the number of farm closures. This is very concerning given that it serves as the backbone of our region. If we don't have local producers supplying our demand then we will be left to either starve or import foreign produce (God help us). We're all in this together, we're all accountable. Growing up on a local farm and being a third generation Sunshine Coast resident, I understand the importance of community participation for local producers. I also understand and value the relationship between our regional agricultural sector and the government, a relationship that is unfortunately in dire straits. We need to address the elephant in the room. The government has neglected our farmers for too long. They have in many ways betrayed our local producers for cheap and nasty foreign multinational companies. We need a serious change in priorities from our politicians. I live in Maleny. Maleny requires an overall plan, known in development circles as a placemaking master plan. Maleny is a tourist destination and we can improve so many areas to create a vibrant town with a WOW factor that we can all be proud of that enhances our lifestyle and brings economic benefits. There are many groups who separately discuss issues and are passionate about actioning them. My priority if elected councillor is to galvanise and coordinate the business community, environment groups, community groups, sports and recreation, and individuals to develop a cohesive plan. There is so much we can do to involve art groups to assist with streetscapes and decorating shop fronts, pavements and park areas. How do we realise the dream of building an aquatic and cultural arts centre? How do we integrate parking areas and maintain our special environment of creeks and rainforests? Once we agree on an overall plan it needs to be costed and a budget prepared. It involves everyone working as a team. My first year as councillor will be to bring this vision to a reality through consultation with all Maleny stakeholders; then presenting to council and state and federal MPs the plan so we can allocate funding from all three levels. I live in Palmwoods. These are the issues I would address. Stronger support for CCTV in towns located alongside the railway corridor. These are Palmwoods, Woombye, Eudlo and Mooloolah. Transport service. Bus timetables are irregular. There is a need for more bus stops. Development. It is imperative for developers and council to seriously maintain the lifestyle and the character of the hinterland. Road infrastructure. With the increase of population in the hinterland, the need for efficiency of movement matches the population growth. Kerbside collection. The community needs council support to assist in both affordable dump fees and picking up of whitegoods and other large household items at least once a year. Burn offs. I currently live in a neighbouring division in a suburb called Mountain Creek. In nominating as a candidate for councillor, I believe it’s important, no actually it’s essential, to have a genuine affinity with the division you seek to represent. Since moving to the Sunshine Coast my wife and family have spent more time living and working in Maleny than anywhere. In fact, it was the Sunshine Coast hinterland that convinced us to move from Sydney to, quite literally, Maleny’s greener pastures. Maleny and other hinterland towns are often more readily recognisable for what they once were. As you arrive in town, Maleny’s street art steel cows celebrate a proud dairy heritage, vibrant murals depict Woombye’s Cobb & Co days and the train in Palmwood’s Kolora Park recognises rail’s importance to a once burgeoning agricultural industry. Like most things, over time, towns change, so it begs the question: “What will we be known for in the future?” While the role of council is often reduced to the alliterative phrase of 'roads, rates and rubbish', I wish to look beyond the basics to how council might facilitate the community to achieve bigger goals, a preserved environment, equity of services and opportunity, sustainable economy, and caring and compassionate communities. Greg Williams I reside in Maleny and residents in Maleny and throughout Division 5 are telling me that the lack public transport and subsidised hinterland bus/Coastlink and taxi services and their connectivity to rail is impacting adversely upon them. Parents, pensioners and adolescents are telling me it is important to improve public transport services to enable: • them to remain in the area • their children to travel to sports practice and competitions and activities because they work • older children to travel to and from part-time, full-time jobs and/or tertiary studies because they are unable to drive them • low income families, retirees, pensioners and unemployed to access services at local hospitals and participate in sport and activities because they no longer have the use of their own vehicle. My solution – to reprioritise and direct funds collected from the transport levy to pay for: • increased bus services throughout the day and on weekends from early morning to late evening • increased affordable transport services provided by the Sunshine Coast Council hinterland Q-Connect/Coastlink services and/or other providers throughout Division 5 • extending the 690 and 691 bus services to Maleny Soldiers Memorial Hospital (bus stop outside) and turnaround at the council works depot in Palm Street • increased construction of bus stops on all routes • improved connectivity to rail services. www.facebook.com/GregWilliamsDivision5/

Tracy Burton I have lived in Palmwoods and the surrounding community since 2008 and was born in Maryborough on the Fraser Coast, where my extended family lives going back generations. After consulting with the residents of Palmwoods and Woombye, loss of habitat due to overdevelopment is of great concern. Sadly, we have all witnessed several local forests clear-felled to make way for new estates, where mature old trees were chopped down to create the roundabout. Local wildlife have been lost or displaced and our green corridors significantly reduced. If elected I would vote against inappropriate development and fight to protect Palmwoods’s green spaces. Increased traffic on the main road through the town has also increased, worsening pedestrian safety concerns. The traffic roaring down Margaret Street past the bakery is very dangerous for families and drivers. The speed limit really needs to be reduced to 40km/h with flashing signage to notify drivers to slow down. There is also concern about the lack of safe pedestrian pathways linking Kolora Park to the shops and further along Chevallum Road. Kolora Park (the duck pond) needs a great deal of work to improve its health and cleanliness. The water quality is extremely poor and people have been turned off going there, which is such a shame. Local lads The Idle Minds have been kicking some muso goals, scoring a support slot for Aussie legend Daryl Braithwaite last weekend, which also coincided with the launch of their debut EP. Hailing from a home town base of Beerwah, the band is made up of Kody Roby (lead vocals and piano), Myles Roby (bass and backing vocals), Pace Proctor (lead/rhythm guitar) and Elijah LD Madden (drums). Readers may remember a few years back that Kody and Myles were winners of the locally run Beerwah’s Got Talent competition. Kody describes the band as a piano-powered four-piece, tying together feelgood hooks with big ballads and catchy modern pop tunes. The boys have already made waves in the local scene, from debuting at an open mic night at Solbar last year, to returning just a few months later in January this year to play as a headline act. Kody said the band was excited to be out and about, and they are looking forward to gaining more traction with the release last week of their debut EP titled ‘The Homesick EP’, available on all streaming platforms (Spotify, iTunes, Google Play, Amazon). “Our EP launch date was easily decided as it fitted in with our supporting spot on February 28 for Daryl Braithwaite at Kings Beach Tavern," Kody said. “This EP is one to look out for. Tips for getting under way in music I often speak to people who’d love to play an instrument or sing with others but something is holding them back. Often it is simply that they don’t feel they are musical enough, so let’s begin by letting go of that notion. If you love music and want to play, that is all that matters. Successful musicians have different levels of natural music talent but one thing they all have in common is the desire to work hard and be good at what they play. What if you are one of those people who plays a little and needs a slight push? Here are some tips that might be useful and, for simplicity’s sake, I’m going to assume you are a guitar or ukulele player, so adjust what I am saying to suit the instrument you play. The best tip I can give you is the value of setting goals for your music. It might be weekly, monthly or yearly goals. For example, for year one you might collect the music and learn to play the chords of as many songs in as many styles as you can. Let’s assume you get through that pretty well. For year two you need a new goal. What about you find and work with a teacher or mentor who inspires you and your music? Or it might be that you join a group or class that will motivate you. Alternatively, you may learn to play and sing 12 songs really well as part of your song repertoire, which can be performed at open mic events. Now things are really looking up. You’re just at the end of your second year, your style is developing and you have a recognisable sound. By year three you might be ready to start writing your own songs. And by the end of this year even your friends don’t mind the music you are creating! Year four may be that big leap forward and you are now ready to really go public. You want to record some of your songs and put them up on Bandcamp (or equivalent) for others to hear. This may involve working with a studio, with their arranger or producer to build the songs, or it may be a teacher or professional level colleague who is able to assist you in developing your songs. I’m over my word limit so that’s it for this month but I hope you or a friend got something useful from this. Have a phenomenal goal-setting month of music! Contributed by Karli Pearson The Joey Scouts, Cub Scouts, Scouts and Venturer Scouts of Landsborough Scout Group recently had the enormous pleasure of joining Scouts from across the district at their annual Founder's Day Camp. The day is celebrated throughout the Scouting world because it is Lord Baden-Powell's birthday and he was the founder of Scouts. Each Scouting group does their own thing but here in Beaver Master District they chose to camp together at Rocky Creek at Landsborough, which is both the district's Scout camp as well as the meeting place for Landsborough Scouts. While bush walking, water rockets, rock wall climbing, stilt walking, rope swinging, activity stations and the campfire were all very enjoyable, without a doubt the highlight of the camp was Colour Run, an event held in memory of a local colourful Scout leader, ‘Tex’. The Landsborough Rural Fire Brigade came and hosed everyone down during the colour run and it was so much fun. The kids were stained and soaking wet. Despite the hosing down from the fire brigade they all still needed a quick outdoor, cold shower before they were allowed anywhere near the amenities block. Apparently it looked like the Landsborough Rural Fire Brigade enjoyed their work as well.

Susan McLean, Australia’s foremost expert in the area of cyber safety, will speak at a free cyber safety seminar for parents at 6pm on Thursday, March 26 at the Beerwah Community Hall. The information session will cover the good, bad and ugly of growing up online and include topics such as what are kids doing online, popular social networking sites and apps. It will also cover what online grooming is, when and how it occurs, and the warning signs. The talk will cover cyber bullying, what it is, what it looks like, how to prevent it and what to do if it occurs. There will be a discussion on sharing nude photos looking at the emotional and legal consequences of taking and sending explicit images. The seminar will also cover problematic internet use and gaming issues and provide top tips on how to help your children to stay safe online. There will also be a question and answer session at the end of the talk. Susan McLean runs Cyber Safety Solutions and was the first Victorian police officer appointed to a position involving cyber safety and young people. She took her first report of cyber bullying in 1994 and since then has conducted extensive research, completing advanced training in the USA and the UK. Susan is a sought-after presenter and adviser to schools, elite sporting bodies, and state and federal governments. She is certified by the Office of the eSafety Commissioner as a provider of high quality cyber safety education to schools throughout Australia and speaks to more than 70,000 young people and thousands of teachers and parents each year. In welcoming everyone back after the Christmas break, Alistair said he was delighted to see the first meeting so well attended. Ladies president Gail Farran then thanked the club for the donations towards the Christmas hamper donated to The Shack Community Centre at Nambour. During the evening John Rodwell and Angela Moulder were presented with their pins to mark two years of community service. Guest speaker was Cathy Anderson (pictured), a local registered nurse and diabetes educator. Cathy gave a thought-provoking address, stressing the importance of good lifestyle including a wellmanaged diet and daily exercise. Before the meeting closed, the club agreed to donate $600 to Camp Krocodile to assist with the costs of bus hire for young people using the facility.

From the churches Father’s approval I recently had an opportunity to share a very special true story of an event in the life of a man who lived almost 2,000 years ago. To me, the story surrounded one sentence that His Father had said to him. The sentence was one of approval and it also was stated before the Son’s peers. The sentence: “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!” The Father is God Himself. The Son is Jesus Christ. The special event in the Son’s life was that of His appearance being changed, for a brief moment in time, to something extraordinary. The reference is found in the Bible - Matthew 17:5. Health &Wellbeing Healthy eating, healthy kids 3D printing advances cancer care About a quarter of Queensland children are overweight and only around five per cent meet the Australian Dietary Guidelines for recommended daily serves of both fruit and vegetables. Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service (SCHHS) Healthy Lifestyle Program physiotherapist and case manager, Jackie Kraayenbrink, said healthy practices established early in life often continued into adolescence and adulthood. “Giving our kids a healthy start in life is so critical to a happy, healthy future. We acknowledge it is easier said than done," Ms Kraayenbrink said. To assist parents and carers of children aged 1-6 years to start off on the right track, SCHHS will hold Healthy Eating Healthy Kids workshops. They are free two-hour workshops run in various locations across the Sunshine Coast led by a multidisciplinary health team. Ms Kraayenbrink said the focus would be on families being healthy together, with parents being the biggest role models. Areas discussed will include food, sleep, technology and activity levels. Workshop dates and locations in the coming months include 9.30–11.30am on Wednesday, March 11 and July 29 at Nambour Child Health, 5 Waterfall Road, Nambour, and 9.30-11.30am on Thursday, March 5 and July 30 at Caloundra Child Health, West Terrace, Caloundra. A revolutionary technology is being used to enhance cancer treatment at the Sunshine Coast University Hospital. Radiation therapy director David Willis and his team had been busy testing a specialised 3D printer and software funded by Wishlist to the tune of $30,000, thanks to the Queensland Gambling Community Benefit Fund. The printer and software help radiotherapists print personalised devices for patients who are undergoing radiation for skin cancer. “No two cancer patients are the same, so radiation therapy must be tailored to the individual,” Mr Willis said. “For skin cancers and shallow tumours, doctors sometimes prescribe a skin covering to manipulate the beams during each treatment session. The size, shape and thickness of that covering depends on what the patient needs.” Currently, radiotherapists manually sculpt thermoplastic sheeting or a type of beaded material onto a patient, which is time consuming and may be uncomfortable for the patient. “The thermo-plastic sheeting is about $145 a kilogram and you end up with a lot of waste. What we are printing at the moment is $50 a kilogram – it is also less labour intensive and is very precise,” Mr Willis said. “The printer relies on very clever software, which is part of what we got from Wishlist. It takes

information from a patient’s CT scan or from other scanning we do and converts that into something we can use during the treatment. That also means that we aren’t making things directly on the patient, meaning more comfort and a bit less time in the department. “It is really quite novel and we wouldn’t be able to do half the things we can do without the software.” While the printer and software have been in a test phase since delivery late last year, the team hope for the printer to be fully operational for patient treatment this month.

Brownie and I got to sneak out of the office last week for a quick lunch at Sunni’s Spot and I have to say it was great to see how many customers had taken in their ad from Glasshouse Country & Maleny News to get their incredible meal deal offers. CWA bake sale 1

Members of the Beerwah CWA outdid themselves last Saturday when they hosted a traditional bake sale at their hall in Simpson Street to raise funds for the CWA’s Public Rural Crisis Fund. There were lots of lovely local ladies - some CWA members and some not - who happily did their bit to make the event a success, making a wonderful range of biscuits, slices, cakes, scones and cupcakes for sale.

4 There were quite a few men at the hall on Saturday as well, who seemed very happy to support the day and confirm first-hand the quality of the baking. The CWA ladies were pleased that the day raised more than $1,000, which included a $150 donation from Taz at All in One Fitness and $100 from Elena from Aussie Home Loans.

I thought I’d get out my old uni botany texts and do some columns on plant parts - what they do and how they work - starting with pollen. Pollen is the elementary male part of a plant used in the sexual reproduction process to create seeds. In angiosperms (flowering plants) it is produced on the anthers. These are small organs on the end of a filament that together are called a stamen, and are located within a flower. In gymnosperms (conifers) the pollen – called a microspore – is produced in the male cone (called a microstrobilus) on things called microsporangia. Pollen is only a transport system for the male reproductive cells, which are carried inside the pollen grain. To work, the pollen has to be transported to the female part of the plant. The way this can happen is really varied and sometimes outright weird. For example, some orchid species have a flower that mimics a wasp shape. A male wasp tries to mate with the flower thinking it’s a female, collecting some pollen on its body. When it moves to try its luck with the next lady wasp-flower, the pollen is deposited on the female part of that flower. When the pollen grain lands on the female receptor (the stigma in flowering plants and the ovule in gymnosperms), it germinates, growing a pollen tube that transfers the male reproductive cells down into the ovary, thus fertilising. Pollen is tough stuff. It will last for thousands of years and scientists use pollen as a way to age sediments and rocks from eons ago. Each plant species makes a unique shape of pollen, meaning that the study of pollen (called palynology) is useful to forensic scientists for solving crimes. Pollen is a useful food source for many insects and animals. Pollen eaters are called palynivores. Although bees are the most widely recognised palynivore, other things also eat pollen including some beetles, spiders, mites, flies and butterflies. Even humans eat pollen. In Korea, there is a dessert called dasik, which is made using pine pollen. Pollen may look yellow but under the microscope if can be multiple colours depending on the plant species it comes from and the type of pollinator they are trying to attract. Most pollen is yellow as bees see that colour better than say red or green.

Most allergy problems are not from the flowers you can see in your (or the neighbour’s) garden. Pollen of flowers tends to be larger and heavier and so doesn’t travel well through the air. The worst allergy offenders are the minute pollens from grasses and other wind pollinated plants, which means they could be kilometres away.

Did you know pumpkins are fruits not vegetables, because they bear seeds. Rhubarb, on the other hand, is a vegetable. The flower of the titan arum (Amorphophallus titanium) is the largest unbranched flower in the world and can reach up to 4.5m tall. The bloom produces a smell like that of rotting meat, giving it the common name of corpse flower. When is a nut not a nut? When it’s a peanut. Peanuts are not nuts but legumes related to beans and lentils. The beloved snapdragon flower resembles a dragon – if you squeeze the sides, the dragon’s mouth will appear to open and close. Why do we cry when cutting onions? Sulfuric compounds are to blame for cut onions bringing tears to your eyes. Pink nodding orchid On a recent walk around the Trachyte Circuit on Mount Tibrogargan, GMAN members were thrilled to find a mass flowering of pink nodding orchid (Geodorum densiflorum). This deciduous grounddwelling or terrestrial orchid grows in dry eucalypt forest and coastal swamp forest at lower altitudes, often on sand. The only Geodorum found in Australia, this species grows across Asia and the Pacific Islands, and along the east coast of Queensland and New South Wales as well as in parts of the Northern Territory and northern Western Australia. Geodorum densiflorum is listed as "endangered" under the NSW Government Threatened Species Conservation Act 1995. Pink nodding orchids flower in December and January and are dormant (the plant is not visible above the ground) during winter. They have three to five broad, pleated dark green to yellowish leaves that are marked by three prominent ribs, and an unusual flowering stem that nods when in flower and then straightens for seed dispersal. Each stem has 8–20 white to deep-pink flowers. All native orchids are protected by Australian law and must not be disturbed or removed. Many species are becoming rare due to habitat destruction, weed invasion, trampling and collection, so it is important to avoid removing them or picking the flowers. Glasshouse Country Bowls Contributed by David Hayes Wednesday, February 26: Ladies day, the championship fours final was held with Di Hume, Di Garland, Chris Dougan and Rae Farrell defeating Marge Clarke, Sue Kirk, Wendy Platt and Chris Freshwater 23-16. Well done ladies. Thursday, February 27: Open pairs but due to rain after the first game we were only able to play one game. Winners of the day were Di Hume and Rae Farrell with one win and a score of 24. Runners up were Doug Sweedman and Kevin Cook with one win and a score of 16. Lucky draw went to Ross Buerchner and Rob Scullion. Saturday, February 29: What a great day for our club. In Gr8s men’s division five, round five home to The Waves Caloundra. Our men stayed on top of the table with a two rinks to one win. Darryl Goschnick and Rob Scullion along with the fours team led by John Annakin. Gr8s ladies’ division five, round five home to Kawana. Our ladies had a hard fight against the second place team Kawana. Jenny Morris and Chris Freshwater along with the fours won to give a 2-1 rinks win to keep us in first place with our last home game this Saturday at 10am vs Coolum. Q7s division five, round eight, Enoggera at home was another ripper of a game. Mick Borchers had a fantastic

win in the singles 25-10. The fours led by Jimmy Tatum got up 19-13. In an extra end at 22-all our two juniors Jack Chirgwin and Chloe Runge won 23-22. Sunday, March 1: We had fantastic weather for our fifth annual Kerry Capern Memorial Day, when 64 players took the green with many local teams plus teams from Banyo, Woodford, Kallangur, Donnybrook and a junior team. Two games of bowls were played 15 and 18 ends. Lucky draw went to the team from Kallangur. In third place was Avon Odonovan, Sue Cox, Ed Malone and Geoff Jones from Woodford with two wins + 14 margin. Second place on countback was Col Allen, Kev Beasley, Troy German and Len Skerry, 18 ends, two wins + 20. Winners for the second year in a row were Eileen Pierce, Chris Dougan, Tony Verdonck and Rob Scullion, with 19 ends, two wins + 20 margin. Thanks to Bill Tumbridge for once again making with day happen with the support of his wife Lorelle and family. District mixed pairs are open so grab a nomination form at the club, as they close March 16. Nominations are also open for the state championships, which are held from May 4-17. Contributed by Ken Barker The mower is working again! About two weeks ago it blew a seal in the ram that lifts the rear cutting cylinder. Croquet, a precision sport, relies on good lawns. We as a club thank the showgrounds, in particular Colin Sinclair of Mountain Mowers and all members who helped out with their time, expertise and patience at various moments during this crisis. The lion’s share of credit must go to Robert Lee who contributed much time and effort to nursing the old John Deere back to health. Robert (pictured below) installed the repaired ram, checking the gap between the cutting plate and the rotating blades, which, for the techno-freaks, is 0.025 mm. Thursday, February 20 saw good play on the lawn with Nick Cram in a tight game beating Ken Barker 7-6 while Vince Carbery on the same score of six deferred to Kath Smith and Sarah Widin 13. Wallace Roy and Helen Andrews teamed up to play Sally Adams and Bev Sockhill in three games of golf croquet with Sally and Bev victorious, the games going 7-5, 7-6 and a consolation victory of 3-7 to Wallace and Hellen to finish. Ken played at Bribie Island on the weekend in the Mary Masters tournament. He had three wins from five games. Thanks to Bribie for hosting a wonderful tournament. Peter Kajewski from Gracemere was the eventual winner. On Sunday, February 23 Nick defeated Vince 14-9, Sarah beat Kath 6-3 while in a golf croquet game Wallace was a tidy winner against Stuart Craig and Helen 7-5. Rain brought an early close to play. Coaching for beginners and others is available from 8-10am on Saturdays. These are popular sessions with accredited coaches in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. After taking on North Lakes Mustangs FC and winning 4–0 (goals: C Nairn (2), M Teljega and R Mawditt) the weekend before last and last weekend they played to a home crowd against Bayside United FC coming away with another win 2–1 (goals: C Nairn and M Fichtner). The McDonald’s Premier men’s season kicks off this coming weekend when our BeeGees up against Maroochydore at their home ground. Our U14 boys’ team starts this weekend as well.

McDonald’s Premier women’s competition and our other teams will start from March 13. All BeeGees players need to make sure their registrations are up to date and paid in full to play in their first match. Our first home games for our senior teams won’t be until April. Maleny Bowls Club Contributed by Graeme Glover It was another great week for the bowls club with lots of people doing positive things to help the club. With the year well under way, a big welcome to a number of new members and a particular mention to our new board members, Trish Edwards and John Williams. Their contributions to the club are already receiving positive comments. Thanks also to all the returning board members who give of their time to help the club provide so much for others. Monday pairs looked to be a great day but the weather had a different view and, yes, it was another washout. On Wednesday night, the weather had ideas but it did not beat folks coming down for a fun catch-up, burger, beer and social game. Well done to Tony Yorkston, Steve Porter and Ben Fawns who fed the changing crowd. Miles Allen put together some games so all had their bowls appetite satisfied. Thank you to all who continue to support this event. Friday saw the sunshine and some kind weather. Thunder was heard but it was just a welcome not a warning. Congratulations to all the winners, Brian Squires, Dave Edwards, Curley Petersen, John Williams and Judith Lees. All of your names have been forwarded to the handicapper. Witta Tennis Contributed by Pauline Frawley Witta Wagtails had a home game against Maleny Magics. After six sets, the Wagtails were winning by two games after some great tennis but the Wagtails lost the last two sets and the Magics were the winners on the day. Thanks to the Wagtails team - Gerry Gabriel, Jan Maguire, Cheryl Cavanagh and Sonia Douglas. Whistlers played at Witta against Maroochydore Phoenix. The weather was great, it was good to be in the sun and good tennis as usual. We were happy to be on the court and it was even better that we had a win. Score was 48-21 games, 8-0 sets. Team was Maree Hooley, Paula Cudmore, Donna Kuskopf and Aki Lepper. The Wildcats travelled to Nambour to compete against ZTA Novas. It was great tennis but was hot and humid, which affected both teams. Pauline Fraley, Annie Stewart, Stacey English and Libby Howlett were down by two games going into the last two sets. The team rallied and came away with the win, with the final score being four sets each and 40-34 games. Monday night - get your racquet on is becoming very popular.
