Rick Baberowski is the sitting councillor in Division 1 and was first elected in 2012. “I first stood for council because of the avalanche of development coming to our area,” Rick said. “There was a real threat that our local businesses would be devastated by competition from the new town centres, the first of which is now built in Baringa. “To help meet this challenge, each term I have aimed to win council support for a transformational masterplan and streetscape upgrade for one of our towns.” In his first term, Rick delivered a successful rejuvenation of Beerwah’s town centre. “This term, I fought for a similar project for Landsborough and in the recent budget I succeeded in having allocated a $4 million upgrade of Cribb Street, which will begin in February. “Additionally, proposed future stages will create a heritage precinct around Landsborough Museum and upgrading of the other side of the rail line.” Rick says that, if re-elected, his biggest goal will be securing a similar project for Glass House Mountains and he believes Glass House could be the region’s most beautiful country town. “Residents should get the chance to design a future for their town that fulfills its potential," he said. Rick is proud of his results this term – the District Park in Glass House, the Beerwah Aquatic Centre refurbishment, Turner Park rejuvenation, Beerburrum’s new trailhead and the Landsborough dog park.
“Next term I will fight for an extension to Beerwah Library with new meeting rooms, a fantastic park in Peachester delivering the community’s vision, a rail-totrail network across Glasshouse Country, a new festival site to boost tourism, and many more projects,” Rick said. “But our area’s potential is threatened if we allow unconstrained development to destroy our towns’ country character. “Council makes a new planning scheme every eight years. The next one is just after the election. I want to use my experience from eight years as a councillor to ensure it works for us. I was recently successful in amending the current planning scheme to create a new requirement for larger lot sizes for many local residential developments. “Next planning scheme, I’ll advocate further changes. For example, I would strengthen our weak local area plans so that when assessing development applications council could take more account of factors like local character, not just zoning. Let’s protect our way of life.” rick.baberowski@gmail.com 0487 648 809
