Hi Everyone
W
ell, it was another short working week but it was definitely a busy one across our area, in particular for the dedicated members of our local RSL Subbranches at Maleny, Beerwah and Glass House Mountains who collectively organised numerous local services, marches and school visits. We have tried to include as many photos and stories of our local events as possible. However, with so many personal stories about individual involvements in Anzac Day commemorations this year, I am sure we have still only been able to skim the surface. And while Brownie and I took plenty of photos on the day, starting out at the 4.15am Dawn Service at Maleny, then off to the Gunfire Breakfast at Landsborough, the 6am Dawn Service at Glass House Mountains, the Gunfire Breakfast at Club Glass House, then the march at Beerwah, followed by the march and the service at Glasshouse, it wasn’t either of us who took the lovely photo on the front cover. This year we have been fortunate to have a number of locals who have happily provided photos for our use and this one was taken by Jenniffer Maynard of Beerwah. Jen just happens to be the devoted grand-daughter to John Nisbett, the President of Beerwah RSL. So thanks to everyone that shared their images and it is nice to see the activities of the day through so many different eyes! Regards,

Local News Boomerang Bags A Boomerang Bags community is about to start up for Glasshouse Country as a way for people to start conversations, make friends, up-cycle materials and work towards shifting society’s throw away mentality to a more sustainable revolution of re-use one. Boomerang Bags is a community initiative where bags are made by volunteers using recycled material. The bags are distributed into shops and other outlets on a borrow and bring basis, creating a sustainable alternative to plastic bags. Boomerang Bags communities are found around the world. Boomerang Bags for Glasshouse Country was sparked from one good deed leading to another. Local resident Christine McMahon wanted to thank Neil Federer, from the ‘Everything Good’ fruit shop and nursery on Steve Irwin Way, for advice provided to her. Neil had wanted Boomerang Bags in his store but didn’t know anyone who could sew. “When I brought forty bags into the shop as a surprise, Neil literally jumped with excitement," Christine said. Neil was humbled when Christine came to the shop with the first bags. “Small communities can do big things. It just takes one or two people to start something great,” he said. Neil has since paid for a screen to print Boomerang Bag logos, with a touch of local pride by adding “Glasshouse Country”. Christine and Neil envisaged this could grow into a broader local community initiative.

Soon after, the Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre team saw it and showed great interest in hosting the formation of the Glasshouse Country Boomerang Bags community. A local group of mums in Beerwah also started Boomerang Bags recently and will be supporting the group to get started for Glasshouse Country. The first Boomerang Bag making session will be held on Tuesday May 9 from 8.30am to noon. This is not just for people who can sew. There are ways for all to be involved, whether it be ironing, cutting, screen printing or just popping in for a cuppa. Donations of cotton fabric (including doona covers and sheets) can be made to the Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre on weekdays between 9am and noon. Those sewing need to bring their own sewing machines. Enough is enough, according to locals Basic modern living requires access to at least the basics of modern systems and facilities. Our businesses, work, leisure, family interactions, cars and even our household appliances rely on reliable and acceptable lines of communication, such as internet, telephone and mobile networks. Those in big cities have it; residents along our neighbouring coastline have it … so why is it that a vast majority of local areas seem to be treated as second (or third) class citizens? No or poor mobile phone reception, telephone lines that fail when it rains, no access to ADSL internet, progressively slower internet speeds, no NBN network plans until at least 2020. The Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce has decided to take a stand, according to Chamber President Ursula Starkovsky. “Whilst the Chamber mainly looks after the wellbeing of businesses, this topic is something that affects everybody … be it business or private. “A lot of people work either full time from home or take work home to complete. Students of all ages rely on the internet to do their studies and projects. “We live in the 21st century and have to accept communication infrastructure that is worse than in most third world countries,” lamented Ursula. Speaking from her experience as a real estate agent for First National, Ursula said that her problems seem to be reflective of the broader community. “Our office internet is inconsistent and intermittently drops out for no reason. The mobile phone reception – even outside the office seems to fluctuate between good and nothing at all. I’ve spoken with other businesses and they are having the same problems. “And as a real estate agent, I hear a lot of
complaints from property owners. Buyers are turned away when they find out that there is next to no mobile phone coverage or internet access. “I consistently hear that people are spending hours dealing with providers, such as Telstra, but are being frustrated with the responses that nothing can be done.” Part of the problem also stems from poor planning. “New estates are being approved and built without any mobile phone coverage and no access to reasonable internet services,” Ursula said. “This is just unacceptable in our modern world. We’re now saying that enough is enough.” Acknowledging that individuals are getting no satisfaction, the Chamber has decided that the only course of action is through organised ‘people power’. The Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce is collating a case to present to Federal Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace, with an insistence that he take up their cause with the highest levels of Government, Telstra and NBN Co. And they need our help by locals filling out a simple questionnaire detailing the problems and experiences we are having with our telecommunications services and providers. A copy of the survey is available at the First National Office or at Beerwah Hair and Beauty (both in Simpson Street, Beerwah). An electronic version is also on the Glasshouse Country and Maleny News website (www.gcnews.com.au – go to ‘Read’ then ‘Hot Off The Press’ to download the form). According to Ursula, over 70 people have already sent in their replies. “People can fill out the paper version and drop it back to Beerwah First National or Beerwah Hair

We cannot get an internet connection due to no available ADSL ports in Beerwah. We are on a waiting list with Telstra who have advised it may take 12 months. However, as no expansion will be made, it will not happen until NBN arrives. We have made complaints after complaints to Telstra, we have contacted the Communications Department, the NBN, politicians, as well as the Telecommunication Ombudsman. All to no avail.” So make your voice heard and record your experiences. With them, the Chamber can represent your best interests and maybe, just maybe, kick up enough dust to get some positive action on what should be a basic right … easy, reliable, accessible and fast mobile phone and internet connectivity. Don’t you deserve the same as what other communities just take for granted?

Feds deliver on Sunshine Coast Medical School Sunshine Coast MPs Andrew Wallace and Ted O’Brien have praised the Federal Coalition Government for delivering ontime the extra medical places required to establish a medical school at the Sunshine Coast University Hospital. The pair campaigned for the national review and never wavered in their belief that it was the only mechanism to secure the required places. Throughout the process they remained in constant contact with the relevant ministers to ensure the additional places were delivered for the Sunshine Coast by the end of April. “Griffith University advised the government it needed 50 places and a lead-time of 18 months to establish a Medical School at the Sunshine Coast by first semester 2019. Well, thanks to the Federal Government’s timely delivery they now have that certainty,” said Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace.
“This is a terrific outcome for our region. It means Sunshine Coast school leavers wanting to study medicine can stay here with family support.” Member for Fairfax Ted O’Brien said, “We also know that graduating doctors are more likely to live and work in the region where they studied which means more doctors for the Sunshine Coast, hinterland and surrounds.” Mr Wallace and Mr O’Brien thanked the minister for prioritising the Sunshine Coast in the review process and for delivering the 50 places within the promised timeline. “Certainty around these places is of course the first step, not the only step in delivering a fully functioning medical school, but with this certainty Griffith can now move forward with other stakeholders, lock down the details and put in place their processes with a view to opening in 2019,” Mr Wallace said.

… but funding remains uncertain Although universally applauded for making the full 50 medical student places available, the matter of funding the extra 15 places remains unclear. A statement from Griffith University has confirmed that no additional Commonwealthfunded student places have been allocated to them, meaning they will have to recruit 15 full fee paying international students to cover the funding shortfall. Sunshine Coast Council Mayor Mark Jamieson, who has been a strident advocate for a full complement of 50 funded places, has concerns. “There remain a number of questions that are yet to be answered for our community,” Mayor Jamieson said. “First and foremost is whether the additional places are fully Commonwealth-funded medical school places for local students or whether they are only available to full fee paying students, such as international students. “The Sunshine Coast was promised a tertiary teaching hospital as part of the University Hospital development. “Today’s announcement is a long time coming “What this community needs to know however, is on what basis the places were allocated and whether they will be available to Sunshine Coast students.” Previously, State Minister for Health Cameron Dick committed to funding 50% of the additional 15 places to ensure that the medical school could open.

Minister Dick has been reported as stating that if the additional 15 places are going to international students, that offer will be withdrawn. "But if the Commonwealth Government comes to its senses, sees the future is in training Australian students to be Australian doctors, particularly Queensland students from the Sunshine Coast, then I will fund that 50% of those 15 places,” he said. "But I will not be funding it for international students." Mr Wallace has since clarified that he understood that the additional 15 student places allocated to Griffith University were for international students and that Griffith University could transfer 15 Commonwealth-funded places from their teaching campus on the Gold Coast to fill the places at the Sunshine Coast.

Greece, a sweet adventure Maleny pottery and sculpture artist Cathy Lawley from Fried Mudd Studios had the wonderful opportunity last September to facilitate a creative workshop on the Greek island of Skopelos where the movie ‘Mamma Mia’ was filmed. GC&M News recently caught up with Cathy to find out a little more about this amazing art adventure. The incredible experience took 13 guests on a 15-day Greek Island pottery and sculpture exploration that included pottery workshops and sightseeing and the chance for participants to immerse themselves in authentic village life and Greek culture. The group met in Athens and flew to the small island of Skiathos in the northwest Aegean Sea. From here the group took a ferry across to Skopelos and were taken to their villa on the side of the island which overlooked the picturesque Mediterranean Sea.
By Sonia Clark The art school (also overlooking the sea) where the workshops were conducted was located a ten minute drive away and the group (mainly ladies) worked with creating objects that all held a ‘Greek inspired’ theme, such as urns, jewelry, miniature whitewashed houses and sculptures of Greek goddesses. “It was just such an out of this world incredible experience!" enthused Cathy. "You almost had to pinch yourself that it was happening – it was wonderful and amazing!" Also part of the adventure was going on the ‘Mamma Mia’ tour, meeting locals and experiencing their hospitality and cuisine as well and visiting the island of Alonssos and meeting other local artisans including a traditional kick wheel potter who came from a long line of village potters. “The tour was more than just an experience – we were all filled with joy and inspired by the kindness of the people, the stunning location, and being surrounded by local culture and using local resources and materials,” said Cathy. At the conclusion of the workshops and firing process, the group held a small exhibition of their work and celebrated with a traditional meal. By all accounts, the tour was a wonderful success and Cathy looks forward to being involved again with Artemis Art Tours in the future. In other great news for Cathy, she has recently found out that she has been awarded the Geoffrey Walker Fellowship grant to attend the summer school at The Penland School of Crafts in North Carolina.
The opportunity was accessed through her active involvement with the Suncoast Clay Workers Association and followed an in-depth application and selection process. Cathy is understandably thrilled to be awarded this opportunity to attend the three week course in the United States titled ‘Print, Clay and Surface Buffet’ at the end of May. To be selected she had to prove how the fellowship would encourage both creative and personal growth. “This is such an honour to receive this fellowship and I’m very excited and am looking forward to challenging myself – as a teacher we often give ourselves out and so it is nice to be creatively nurtured which in turn I can then give back,” said Cathy. A provision of the grant is that she extends herself with developing new techniques and upon return Cathy looks forward to producing an exhibition featuring a new body of work within 12 months.

Each venue offers a different way to experience your unique local history and each will transport you to aspects of life as it was. Maleny’s newest venue, The Beersheba Living
Museum in the Maleny Community Precinct, will be open to the public for the first time. The 5th Light Horse Regiment Maleny Troopers will be on hand to show you what they’ve been up to inside their new home and museum, and demonstrate what it takes to get rider and horse fully kitted up. Maleny Historical Society’s Pioneer Village will have vintage cars and caravans, wood chop, sheep shearing, an art display, old engines, a blacksmith’s workshop, stalls with plants, crafts, cakes and sweets, and music. Priscilla Cottage, Lawley House, Pauline’s Shed and The Men’s Shed will all be open for inspection. The Friends of Pattemore House invite you to see how in 1907 the four Pattemore brothers built a farmhouse called ‘Fairview’ for their parents, entirely from the white beech timber around them, and the tools they used to do it. The weekend is sponsored by the Sunshine Coast Council. Pattemore House is located at 15 Porters Lane, North Maleny, and the Beersheba Living Museum is located at Parklands Drive, North Maleny (off Porters Lane). Both will be open from 1pm to 4pm on Saturday and Sunday. The Maleny Pioneer Village is located at 7 Bryce Lane, Maleny and it will be open on the Sunday from 9.30am. Morning and afternoon teas will be available at all venues. There is plenty of parking and entry by donation – it’s a great way to enjoy local history and support your local heritage organisations.

Caroline’s journey through Kokoda Trail Caroline Hutchinson, well known Sunshine Coast radio morning presenter at Mix FM and all-round great local identity, will be heading along to share stories with the Glasshouse Country Women’s Social Group on Wednesday May 10 at the Glasshouse Neighbourhood Centre. Caroline has become an annual guest to the group and if you haven’t met her in person this is a great opportunity to listen to her stories up close and personal. With Anzac Day just behind us, she will be talking about her journey through the Kokoda Trail. Contributed by Janet Kitchin Glasshouse Country View Club hosted the Sunshine Coast area zone conference at their monthly lunch meeting on April 19.
Just over 100 ladies from the area attended and in small groups discussed their views on how the clubs are run and what improvements could be made for the future – some good ideas were put forward and later discussed between everyone present. We were entertained by Sounds of R&D (two local ladies who have great talent, singing and playing their instruments). Raffles were presentations of baskets of local produce from the clubs and an original watercolour painting by local artist Joy Joyce. Our next outing we will be at Happy Valley Caloundra for a walk along the boardwalk, followed by a fish and chip lunch. Our club raises money for The Smith Family and the Learning for Life program in all their activities. Any ladies who are interested in coming to one of our functions or who would like to join our club are most welcome. Funding for solar panels
Maleny Golf Club will now be able to reduce their environmental impact and their energy costs following a grant of $15,000 from the Federal Government. Federal Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace visited the golf club recently to announce the grant approval. The money will go toward the installation of rooftop solar photovoltaic panels. Maleny Golf Club President Dr Max Whitten welcomed receipt of the Federal Government’s grant which he said would help reduce both the club’s energy bill and carbon footprint. “The club’s philosophy is all about sustainable development so to have solar power installed not only saves us money but reduces our environmental footprint as well,” Dr Whitten said. “We’ve also done a lot of research to make sure we get the best products in order to get the best results.” The Solar Communities program provides funding for community groups in selected regions across Australia to install rooftop solar PV, solar hot water and solar-connected battery systems. A great way to start the day With the weather cooling down, now is a great time to get into a regular routine for walking and, for those living in Mooloolah, the Heart Foundation’s Mooloolah Walking group meets Monday, Wednesday and Friday at Martin Rungert Park in the centre of town. During the summer months they leave at 6.30am, however they will now be meeting at 6.45am which will continue through the winter months so they can set out for their walks in daylight. The group has been going for well over 10 years. They like to vary their walks and enjoy the social aspect of belonging to a friendly group as well as the health benefits of regular walking. The group’s next monthly meeting will be on Tuesday June 13 and then on Tuesday June 20 the Kawana Club will be visiting for morning tea and lunch with raffles and entertainment.

At the meeting of Beerwah Neighbourhood Watch Queensland held on Tuesday April 11, the Good Neighbour Award for April was awarded to Kelvin Brady. Kelvin was nominated by Una Robinson for his support when the NHW/Lions started creating their ‘Welcome to Newcomers’ to Glasshouse Country Kit. When the kit was established two years ago, Kelvin was one person approached by the welcome kit team asking if he’d be interested in handing these information kits out. Una said he inspected the contents very carefully and then, without any hesitation whatsoever, agreed, as he thought it was a great community idea. “Kelvin has fully embraced this community project and says everyone he sees just loves their kits,” Una said. “Of those asked to assist with Newcomer Welcome kit distribution, Kelvin has handed out more kits to welcome more people than any other outlet in Glasshouse Country. “How neighbourly can one be! He is also very quick to call for extra kits when his stock gets low and someone else needs a kit.” Kelvin is also involved in many other community activities: Glasshouse Bowls Club, Glasshouse Cricket Club, Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre, McHappy Day, Police and Citizens Youth Club, and Glass House Country RSL. Contributed by Gweneth Brooks With the recent focus on Anzac Day, it seemed fitting that at a recent meeting an ex-service member of our club gave a very interesting talk concerning war. He did not deviate from the horrors of war, but he suggested that we look at another angle and consider the good things that have evolved from world conflict. He chose three main points that revolutionised and expedited things to the betterment of mankind: 1. Medicine – antibiotics and artificial limbs; 2. Transportation: the jet engine and; 3. Construction industry: civil engineering. It was a very good insight in how to look at things in a different way. Our next meeting is on Thursday May 11 in the new venue, Church on the Rise building, (the former Beerwah RSL Club) in Beerwah Parade, Beerwah at 9am. Would you like to join Probus? With all the housing estates popping up around our Glasshouse Mountains district we would like to invite any new resident to come along and meet new friends at our Glasshouse Mountains Probus Club. Our meetings are held at the Beerwah Community Centre every second Wednesday of the month at 10am. After a short business section we follow with morning tea then a guest speaker on various and interesting subjects. That is finished off with a finger food lunch provided by members. Other social activities are a Music Club, Book Club, Chat Mornings at a member’s home and every so often a ‘Chat Lunch’ at a tavern anywhere between Caloundra and Caboolture. On the fourth Wednesday of each month we go on an outing somewhere. Recently we have visited the Twinnies at Landsborough, inspected the Clydesdale horses at Woodford and taken a cruise on the Mooloolaba River which included lunch on board. Update with president Ursula Starkovsky Our April Chamber meeting was scheduled for April 18 at Club Glass House and we were very excited to have secured our Federal Member, Andrew Wallace, as our guest speaker to give us an update on both NBN and our everlasting problems with Telstra. The Executive was very aware that the date was a bit problematic being the first day after Easter. However, there was no alternative and we decided to go ahead thinking that the presence of our Federal Member and the difficulties we all face with Telstra would attract a lot of members. Unfortunately, it did not play out the way we anticipated and there were only a few members that took the time to attend the meeting. By the way it was very informative and I truly believe that members missed out on good information vital for any business in our area. It is quite disturbing to see the lack of commitment/interest from members. The Chamber is here to represent local businesses, which is what we are all about. But we can only do this effectively if we have the support from the business community. We believe that the lack of mobile phone reception throughout our area and the unreliable internet would be a major problem for a business and/or business owners. Maybe we are mistaken and all is fine!! Our next meeting will be a General Meeting to be held at Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club. We will be sending out invitations.

You Said It Power to the people
In response to the State Liberal member's article in GC&M News, April 12 edition: Electricity is a basic necessity in a developed country and it must be a public utility for our people. Everyone suffered including the aged, unemployed and vulnerable when it is was privatised in 2006 by Labor. Last year in Queensland, 21,000 had their power cut off because they could not afford to pay their bill. Since 2006-07, power bills have nearly doubled, rising by 87% in real terms. By contrast, in the twenty years before that, electricity prices actually fell. This cannot and must not be allowed to continue unabated. I am for small businesses and ensuring their success, particularly in local communities. However many multinational companies pay no tax. Politicians and CEOs of big corporations must be accountable when providing basic necessities like health care and power. The CEO of Origin Energy, Frank Calabria, earned $2.3 million last year. The CEO of Energy Australia, Catherine Tanna, earned $4.3 million last year. AGL CEO Andrew Vessy tops the list at $6.9 million last year. In the last four years these multinationals have made $7.2 billion profit selling us over priced electricity. The generators are publicly owned and our taxpayer dollar paid for them. Private retailers are selling electricity back to us at a massive profit. Is this fair? I think not. Re: Adani Mine letters
Sel Hopley (GC&M News April 26) states that I got the price of thermal coal wrong, and that it is over $100 (the level at which the Adani mine becomes viable). In fact I used the spot price from last year, and while it is true the price recently spiked upwards, it has once again resumed its long-term downward trend (google ‘thermal coal indexmundi’ to see the graph). The current price is AU$86/ton, which is below the price that makes the Carmichael mine viable, and the price is again resuming its long-term downward trend. I predict we will see the spot price at $40/ton again this year (or lower), which will make the Adani mine a bad joke. Hopley then goes on to paint the unprecedented two-year bleaching of the Great Barrier Reef as something that can be blithely explained away by citing ‘El Nino’. This is simply rubbish. In all recorded history, we have never seen a back-toback bleaching of the Reef before. Never. If you google ‘Great Barrier Reef bleaching unprecedented’ there is confirmation from all the major news outlets. WWF Australia Head of Oceans Richard Leck was quoted as saying "scientists warned that without sufficient emissions reduction we could expect annual bleaching of the Great Barrier Reef by 2050 ... Consecutive bleaching events have arrived 30 years early". The Reef is starting to die because of global warming, but nonetheless vested interests want us to build the biggest coal mine on earth! It's patently absurd! Olive Hockings (GC&M News April 26) raises the tired old canard of ‘CO2 is plant food’. I suggest she pops over to https://skepticalscience.com/ co2-plant-food.htm where she will learn that too

Re: Adani mine
Many of your Letters to the Editor of late have expressed strong feelings against the Adani mine construction. I am quite dismayed that people are making false statements that have the potential to destroy people’s lives. I am even more concerned that these people want to close down whole industries. I spent 43 years in mining and have two sons currently working in the mines. What is important for your readers to know is that India and other South East Asian countries will get the coal they need to provide electricity to their impoverished millions, whether it is from Australia, Indonesia or South Africa. Coal is a cheap fuel and is readily available. What we do know is that Australia can produce a cleaner coal than elsewhere. As far as sustainability goes, Australia has set productivity, safety and environmental benchmarks second to none. The skill and expertise is here. The most important point I want to convey is that clean coal technology is available now and operating via new power stations in China, Japan and America. The emissions from these power stations have been dramatically reduced, much more than most people realise. The efficiencies are improving year by year. More money worldwide has been allocated to perfecting the clean coal technology. Finally, the predictions regarding the employment levels for the Adani project are completely understated as there is huge potential for several other projects to commence as well. Employment on the rail project alone will be staggering. The local supply requirements will be enormous. The other most notable aspect is that nearly all the local land owners are in agreement, probably the most important part of the equation. Please, let’s have a genuine discussion based on facts. I also support alternative energy sources, but I will never support closing down a whole industry that supports tens of thousands of workers and their families when there is no need to. What do rising mortgage rates mean for you? You may have noticed that in recent weeks, the “Big Four” banks and some smaller ones have increased mortgage rates for both owner-occupied and investment home loans, despite the fact that the Reserve Bank has not done the same. ANZ increased its home loans for existing investors to 6.85 per cent as of March, while rates for existing owner-occupiers making interest-only repayments will increase to 5.45 per cent in July. What does this mean for buyers and investors looking to take out a home loan? Investors, it appears, are being hit harder than owner-occupiers with the interest rate increases. Other banks, 16

including the Commonwealth Bank, NAB, Westpac and St George, have also hiked up rates for investors to a greater extent than owner-occupiers. This has been put down to pressure that the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA) has put on speculative property lending. “Investors have been slapped with the biggest rate hikes so far amid growing speculation that APRA will further tighten investor lending standards in another attempt to cool down unsustainable housing prices in Sydney and Melbourne,” said Kirsty Lamont, director of mortgage rate comparison site Mozo, to ABC News on March 25. The official cash rate is still at a historic
low of 1.5 per cent, but experts believe that further increases are coming. “Even though the Reserve Bank won’t be doing anything on interest rates in term of rate hikes, there’s [sic] probably more increases in mortgage rates coming through,” said Stephen Walters, chief economist at the Australian Institute of Company Directors, to ABC News on March 28. Property investors are likely going to experience the brunt of rising interest rates. Although lenders usually use the Reserve Bank’s cash rate as a guide, the current situation indicates that many are pushing theirs up in spite of the official cash rate being at a low of 1.5 per cent. Therefore, if you are an owner-occupier

Anzac Day
One could only be overwhelmed by the turn out of our local people for the Anzac Day service and march. Being only new to the area this was my first parade attended. My highlight for the day was being chosen to be a flag bearer on the day, something I will always remember. When I was in the services in the 70s I was selected from an elite group of soldiers to be a part of the Guard of Honour at the Centaur on Anzac Day – another memory that will never be forgotten, along with the memories of our fallen which Anzac day is all about. I reside close by the Glasshouse Hall and on Anzac Day as I was about to drive to the hall there was a thunderous noise and the house shook slightly. I thought that plane seemed to be at tree top height. I had not read the paper so the fly past was a pleasant surprise. It was a very appropriate innovation as aeroplanes contribute a lot to modern warfare. I later realised it must have been the Hornet. I hope others will support me and also express their thanks to the organisers. Also it would be appropriate if Glasshouse could thank the pilots for their participation. I was disappointed that I did not have my camera with me. If any of those people who did feel generous and would like to leave a print at the Glasshouse Country and Maleny News office, I would be very appreciative and, if there is a contact number on the back, I will call to express my thanks. Come on council
I attended the Anzac Day Dawn Service at Beerwah and have to say there were a couple of issues I think the council could or should help the Vets with. We approached from Simpson Street and there were no lights on in the park, or the steps going into the park, and at 4am it is pretty dangerous. When we approached the service area, there was one light not working in the park, to the right of the memorial, but the main concern is that the service was spoilt by the fact it was not lit up by flood light, so you could not even see the people taking part or take part in the service and read the order of service as it was pitch black, which was a shame as the RSL had gone to great effort to print an order of service. Surely the council could put a couple of flood lights on the library for this once a year occasion? Whilst this was a moving service, and well done to the RSL for organising this and the day’s events, these issues did spoil it. I hope the council can assist in what is a simple issue to fix for next year. Jason Mooloolah
Ice epidemic
The London Economist normally restricts itself to bread and butter issues but every so often it does focus on social issues such as drugs, prostitution, gambling, etc. In last week's issue it castigates Australian authorities who are flailing in the face of a drug epidemic: ICE. With over a quarter of a million Australians now using ice, this constitutes the highest rate of addiction in the world (nearly 1% of people aged 15 to 49 years exhibit amphetamine-use disorders compared with New Zealand which is 0.6%).
This epidemic is most prevalent in Queensland, where scientists testing sewage found a three to five fold increase in meth residue between 2009 and 2015, which reflects rising purity. Our politicians, both Federal and State, are aware of the problem but have so far not responded with alacrity. Most of them have their heads in the sand. I admit that the National Ice Task Force has been allocated $300 million to reduce demand and help addicts. As the Economist notes, Australia spends most of its counter-narcotics budget on enforcement. Our police forces have put more effort into seizing drugs than into unravelling the rings that smuggle the drugs. As the Economist concludes, "blunt policing has not worked but it sells well". I love good food
People often complain about a negative experience and will tell others. But I think we need to make sure we tell others about positive experience we have too. Like the one I had over the school holidays when I took my children to Pasta d'Vine for lunch. They have delicious food and great service. My nine year old was so happy with his meal that he wrote a thank you note on a napkin to the staff. I then went back the following week to buy some of their freezer meals. And these were just as delicious when cooked as the meals the week before. So, I encourage you to support the local business we have in the area because we have some great ones out there. Maleny: Overrun by degenerates?
Reading the GC&M News is usually such a relaxing experience, however, this week, whilst slurping down some delicious soup and nibbling my beautifully buttered toast, my quiet sojourn was interrupted by Mr Warren (April 26) who insisted that our town has become overrun by degenerates. I couldn’t believe it! Degenerates, here, in paradise? And degenerates, no less, who care nothing for the beauty of Hinterland living. Well, you can imagine my shock. Here I was thinking that Maleny was a delightful town filled with like-minded community members who love our incredible surroundings, filled with birdsong and the endless barking of dogs, neighbours laughing, roosters crowing and cows elegantly munching on rich pastures. Though I have to admit, I too hear the loud roar of motorbikes, of milk trucks before sunrise, cement trucks and other big, noisy truck-like machines leaving roadkill in their wake. Not to mention the round-robin cacophony of mowers on a sunny day, offending my senses and reminding me I should be out there dripping sweat on the endlessly growing lawn instead of relaxing inside with a book. I hear the roar of utes with fat mufflers becoming airborne and narrowly missing small children falling from their scooters onto the road. It drives me absolutely bonkers and there’s no solution except trying to come to peace with, well…the lack of peace. I dare say the noise and bustle of the many noises that make up rural town living do seem amplified amongst the sumptuous seconds of silence that we are sometimes afforded. I guess it’s all about balance, though if I had my way, I’d have something done about those degenerate birds, chirping blissfully and noisily flitting their wings without any consideration for others trying to enjoy the roar of glorious engines tearing through our heavenly hinterland. Re: Letter from R Warren
Could you please advise if this letter (GC&M News April 26) is intended to be tongue in cheek or is it the actual beliefs of the writer? If it is a statement of belief, it is a negative list of thoughts as well as incorrect assumptions. To state that Maleny has become overrun by degenerates, motorcyclists and rednecks is not only farcical and incorrect but derogatory. As far as noisy motorcycles, all bikes must pass a noise level decibel test when they are registered or for a safety certificate, so therefore the noise level is within set parameters. The writer states that he is "no hater" and wants more "positivity" but only lists a variety of dislikes. Hypocrisy comes to mind. Iain Nicol Maleny

experiences, friendships and conversations of ones who had or had not lived in a time where GLBT relationships were more or less accepted. My personal experience is that those in a same sex relationship are of no lesser value to those in a man/women relationship, showing high levels of care, love, support, compatibility and teamwork. How can we say Australia is going backwards, or make comments of one’s moral standards in relation to marriage equality, when our moral standards are simply appalling, especially when you think of how we are currently treating our ‘right’. Larry King is now up to divorce #9, Brittney Spears had a 55 hour long marriage. Divorce rates are staggeringly high and cheating rates are even higher. Currently there is even an online dating website that has been designed for those who are in relationships who are actively looking to find someone to have an affair with. So I ask, how will same sex marriage be of detriment to our society? I am in a heterosexual relationship and it saddens me no end that this is still an issue. I believe my children’s generation will struggle to comprehend how this was an issue, similarly to how I struggle to understand the racial discrimination experienced not so long ago. All lifelong commitments by Australian couples have a right to equal recognition. Perhaps our attention should be directed away from gender, and towards the individual relationship. How well do they know each other and for how long have they known each other? Are they truly committed to one another? It shouldn’t be a matter of who can and who cannot, but how they treat it when they do. Crystal Glass House Mountains
New Beerwah sign
I’d like to register my objection to the big new sign on the Beerwah roundabout, where the railway overpass meets Simpson Street/ Roberts Road. The sign is ugly, meaningless and unnecessary. At first, as the weeks went by during the construction of this enormous thing, I thought it was going to be an advertising billboard, and was horrified. The sign that eventuated is only marginally less irksome than a billboard. Yes, the timber slats tie in with the attractive timber structures along Simpson Street, (although the previous view of green nature was preferable). But the mustard-coloured letters proclaiming ‘Beerwah Town Centre’, and the ugly dots in a supposedly arrow shape, spoil the slatted wooden background. It is no use as a direction sign, as it’s in the wrong place on the roundabout, and the arrow is as unclear as it is ugly. Besides, there’s already a blue and white direction sign at the appropriate place on the roundabout. Now that the enormous sign is up, the two questions remaining are, Who authorised it? School News Remembering the Anzacs
Mooloolah State School held our annual Anzac Parade which was put together by Mr Chris Lowe and the Year 6 students, who all did a wonderful job. The school grounds were alive with handmade poppies displayed everywhere, organised by Lyn and Lindsay Peck from the local community. Lyn herself and other helpers created these beautiful poppies. The school captains gave amazing speeches to honour the fallen and our special guests. They also read out names and tolled the bell for local veterans from the area. Mr Adam Poulus, the school principal, gave a speech to honour our guests Bernie Verwayen and Peter McDonald and they in turn addressed the parade. The school choir sang three heartfelt songs for all the guests and students at the parade to also honour our heroes. Student representatives from each class came forward with wreaths to lay at the front of the parade that were transferred to the outside memorial after parade. The parade was truly a mark of respect and Mooloolah State School should be proud. Many students, families and teachers also came together to march in Caloundra on Anzac Day. Well done to all and Lest We Forget.

Students pause to remember Contributed by Debbie Ives Beerwah State School assembled under their age old mango trees on a beautiful autumn day for the 2017 Anzac Day ceremony. Present were the principal Ms Austen, deputy principal Mrs Mitchell, invited guest Libby Brown, member of the Beerwah and District RSL Branch, and the current Year 6 Student Council. The service was introduced by Year 6 Vice-Captain Tayla assisted by Mea from the Student Council. Principal Ms Austen spoke of the fallen heroes, and honoured past and current service men and women abroad to all those present, including staff, students and parents. Beerwah Student Councillors proudly wore badges commemorating solders from our region. A poem tribute was read by Year 6 school captains Ryan and Lexie followed by the roll of honour for those fallen in the Peachester and Beerwah area. The senior choir under the direction of Mrs Valamis sang The Last Anzac followed by the New Zealand national anthem. Opportunity was given for staff and students to lay a wreath.

Introducing Amber Porter Amber Porter is another locally based staff member who has been with Glass House Early Education Centre since 2012. Amber came to the Centre when she was still a student at Beerwah State High and undertaking her Certificate III in Childcare Services. She started by doing one day a week placement which provided a wonderful introduction to the industry and laid the foundation for her future career. “Since starting my one day a week school placement here 5 years ago, it made me realise how much I wanted to work in the industry. I loved spending time at the Centre and the staff were all so friendly and supportive as they showed me the ropes,” said Amber. Amber completed her certificate and was offered a full time weekly placement until she finished Grade 12. Upon graduating, she was offered full time work at the centre and hasn’t looked back since! Over the years, Amber has enjoyed working in all rooms and has experience engaging with all age groups of children. One of the things she particularly enjoys is coming to work and interacting with the parents and families that attend the Centre. “It’s wonderful that I assisted in the nursery many years ago, and now still see the children at our outside hours school care and vacation care programs. It’s lovely to really get to know both the families and the children over the years.” Amber is now working towards achieving her Diploma from the Australian Institute of Early Childhood Studies and appreciates the fully supportive environment from other staff

Panning for, and identifying, gems (Amber assisting panning) members and management which encourages her professional development. Currently working in the ‘schoolies’ room’, Amber spends time with children from Prep age to Grade 6 who are enrolled in the after school care program. This popular program also runs over vacation times and sees approximately 20 children every school day after school and around 10-15 children before school attending the Centre. The children are picked up and dropped off from local schools and a home pick up service can be available if required. “The children love spending time outside and while the weather is still pleasant they are enjoying water play where they mix water and sand together to make cakes! Another popular activity lately has been panning sand for ‘gem stones’ and learning more about gems. We have a play based learning activity where the children are learning about the gem stones associated with their birthdays – the kids really enjoy this!” says Amber.
Over Easter vacation care Amber, Betina and the schoolies had a trip to Sippy Downs Animal Rescue. They handed over all the generous donations of bedding and pet food collected from families. They also enjoyed a tour of the rescue centre, meeting all the different animals that needed a new home.

School News Students remember them
Commemorating Anzac Day has always been an important event at Glasshouse Christian College and as the College has expanded so have the activities to mark this significant occasion in the Australian calendar. Students had been learning about the meaning of Anzac Day in their classrooms so they could understand the seriousness of the occasion and why we remember something that happened so long ago. When it came time for the Anzac Service at Glasshouse Christian College on April 24 and then the community service in Beerwah on April 25, even the youngest students were quiet and still, feeling the solemnity of the occasion. A Catafalque Party courtesy of Annerley RAAF began the service at GCC and this was followed by musical and poetical items by students and then guest speaker Scott Darlow who is a singer, songwriter and musician. Glasshouse Christian College band and students were privileged to lead the music and songs at the Beerwah service in Turner Park where Andrew Wallace MP was the guest speaker and the Reverend Chris Johnson gave the message. Poems were recited by GCC and Beerwah State High students and the Last Post and Reveille were played by GCC’s Bakani Kombanie. This is the second year the service has been held at Turner Park, the new home of the cenotaph and now also home to a newly planted pine tree. The tree was gifted by the Australian War Memorial and was germinated from a descendent seed of the original Lone Pine in Gallipoli.
Gone but not forgotten Beerwah State High School held its Anzac Day ceremony on Monday April 24. This was led by school Vice Captains Izaac Whan and Taylor Woodward with readings presented by Senior School Captains Erin Hatcher and Clare Eeles. The junior school captains Breanne Howden and Jai Dempster recited the poem, A Tribute to Anzac Day, and wreaths were laid by each of our House Captains on behalf of the students in the four houses of the school. School Chaplain Mike Turner asked all of the assembly to reflect on the sacrifice that so many young men and women have made for us all, not only on that fateful day in Gallipoli in 1915, but in countries around the work today where turmoil still exists.
The Concert Band played a wonderful version of ‘21 Guns’ and instrumental music teacher Clare Deady played the Last Post and Rouse. We were very fortunate to have Mr John Nisbett, President of the Beerwah and District RSL Sub Branch, deliver the Ode to our assembly. Junior and Senior School Captains and Vice Captains also played a role at both the Dawn Service and the Community March and service by reading two poems to the gathered crowd. It was great to see so many students attend the Dawn Service and March as it goes to show that those who have now passed will not be forgotten.
Peachester State School
Peachester School Captains Charlie and Nikita Anzac Day was commemorated this year with students from Peachester State School participating in four different ceremonies. The school held its own service at the school on Friday April 21. The honorary guest at our school service was Mr Len Sousaari, representing Beerwah and Districts RSL Sub-branch, and school captains Charlie and Nikita along with Kyla addressed the school with Anzac tributes and a wreath. Many thanks to Peachester’s own bugle player Katie Jardine for a wonderful Last Post playing. Representative students from each class presented their own hand-made wreaths to our school Anzac Memorial Garden. Our 5/6 students were honoured to travel to Anzac Square in Brisbane for the Brisbane Students’ Anzac Service on Monday April 24. School captains Charlie and Nikita laid a wreath alongside students from many schools from throughout the greater Brisbane area. Students from our school attended the Beerwah Dawn Service and our school was this year proud to lead the morning March to the Beerwah Cenotaph where our school leaders presented a wreath at the Turner Park service. Flyovers a definite highlight By Lea Parkes If you were in Glass House Mountains or Maleny for the marches on ANZAC Day there was a good chance you saw or heard the F/A18F Super Hornet fly over the area at 10.35am and 10.33am + or minus 30 seconds. Even for someone like me with no knowledge of or particular interest in aviation, it was hard not to be impressed seeing the plane flying overhead; and judging by the discussions of those around me at the Glass House march (which went past the front door of our office) they were all surprised at just how low the jet actually flew. Which the Glasshouse Country RSL Sub-branch President Peter Hyde reliably informs us in his letter to the editor this week, was 600ft overhead on Coonowrin Road. The hour and a half flight this jet, from 1 Sqn, 82 WG, RAAF Amberley, took on the day featured fly overs at the ANZAC Day events starting with Nambour at 9.31am, Tewantin-Noosa, Cooroy-

Pomona, Waddy Point, Fraser Island, Hervey Bay, Maryborough, Rainbow Beach, Tin Can Bay, Maleny RSL, Glass House Mountains then on to Kilcoy, Watts Bridge, Esk and ending in the Brisbane CBD at 11.00am. And while the flyover of the 3 vintage biplanes a little later didn’t have the speed and roar of the Super Hornet, it was great to look up as they did their flight over and return run across the sky above both the Maleny and Glass House Mountains marches. Two of the biplanes were Tiger Moths and the third a rare 1930’s Genairco – and all three pilots are local commercial international airline Captains. Each year the local RSL Sub-branches work hard to bring our communities a range of different events and activities which give many locals the opportunity to participate and a formal opportunity to remember those who have served their country.
On behalf of our community who attended services during the day, I would like to thank all of those who contributed in making them each a unique reflection of our local area.

Out & About Awards dinner Maleny’s clubs held the annual Maleny District Sports and Recreation Club Awards Dinner last Saturday. ‘Queen of Ireland’, by director Conor Horgan, will be screened by the Maleny Film Society on Saturday, May 6 in the Maleny Community Centre (86 minutes, classified PG). Using archive material and footage filmed for the film, the director takes us on a journey of gay rights in Ireland. Ireland became the first country in the world to legalise same-sex marriage by popular vote in 2015 thanks in part to the advocacy of Panti. A pub owner and long-time fixture on the gay scene, she rose to mainstream fame the year before the vote when her male alter ego, Rory O’Neill, was sued for criticising a group of activists on TV for their views on homosexuality. The lawsuit sparked a national outcry known as ‘Pantigate’. During the controversy, Panti made a speech about homophobia that became a viral video sensation and turned her into a symbol of the gay rights movement in Ireland. Filmmaker Conor Horgan has directed an inspired documentary about Rory O’Neill and his/her heroic campaign which surprisingly made Ireland a leading nation in the battle for sexual equality. This heroic journey did not succeed through violence and anger but with tremendous humour and good will. ‘Queen of Ireland’ has been described as a ‘fabulous and moving documentary’. Walkers, hikers, mountain bikers, horse riders and canoeists will benefit from a 15-year plan to improve the Sunshine Coast’s recreation trails following council’s decision to endorse a draft plan. The draft will see council partner with the State Government, community and sports groups to enhance what is available for everyone who loves to get outdoors in our fantastic environment and climate. The Recreational Trails Development Plan identifies 10 key projects across the coast that will be slated for further development, including the Glass House Mountains Seven Peaks Walk and Regional Trail Network. Connecting all major national parks to Beerwah, Glass House, Beerburrum and Peachester via a pathway and trail network will offer more walking, running and cycling opportunities for our region and provide a unique opportunity to access a diversity of recreational, natural and historical experiences. I am pleased to advise that works are progressing well on the extension and upgrade of the Beerwah Sportsground car park. This project will see the sealing and formalising of the existing gravel car park adjacent to the pool and construction of a new area of parking on Sportsground Drive. As part of the project there will also be landscaping and seating provided near the skate park along with an access pathway to the pool. It’s worth noting that there will be temporary closures of certain areas of the car park to facilitate the works. As always, I appreciate your patience and co-operation during construction. At this stage, the project is running ahead of schedule and is beginning to take shape of what will be the final product.

Mark McArdle State Member for Caloundra A champion for our community Those who are familiar with the name Alan O’Callaghan, know of a man who has spent much of his life working tirelessly to build strong, inclusive communities without ever losing the smile on his face. Fondly nicknamed ‘The Mayor of Mooloolah’ by locals, Alan spends much of his time at the Mooloolah Community Centre in his role as President, among his other noble commitments to our community. Hopefully by this time next year he will be able to add ‘Commonwealth Games Batonbearer’ to his long list of accomplishments. We are now less than a year away from the Commonwealth Games and it will be the Batonbearers who carry the spirit of the Games to our shores. The Queen’s baton will travel a remarkable 230,000 kilometres over 388 days, across the entire Commonwealth. In Australia alone 3,800 Batonbearers will help it make the journey. The role of the Batonbearer is a prestigious one with nominees asked to meet important criteria, embracing the diversity and values of the Commonwealth. Batonbearers are expected to exemplify a pillar in their region, someone who has achieved something extraordinary and has made a significant contribution to either sport, education, the arts, culture, charity or within their community. They should inspire others and above all contribute to a fun, friendly, vibrant and inclusive society. I am certain we have many great nominees on the Sunshine Coast and Alan is absolutely one of them. Alan was born with Cerebral Palsy and later confined to a wheelchair after a car accident but it was in 1981, the ‘International Year of the Disabled Person’ that his life changed forever. Alan became passionately involved in disability rights, travelling to schools in his wheelchair to speak with students. He attended demonstrations for disabled persons and passionately lobbied for their right to live independently and have better access to services, transport and employment. In his role with the Mooloolah Valley Community Association, Alan has always fought hard for the best interest of the local people and we owe him a real debt of gratitude. Alan, we wish you the best of luck through the nomination process but know that your community is behind you and we could not ask for a better representative for our region. Veggie Notes Potatoes
I’ve often wondered should I really be allocating precious garden space to growing vegetables which are relatively cheap in the shops. Potatoes are one of these … especially when you read of people’s potato growing disasters and the money they’ve outlaid to grow a handful of usable potatoes. But being stubborn gardeners, we seem to persist to the contrary of rational thought. So if you’d like to grow potatoes, first thing is you need to be prepared for disappointment. That way if you get a good crop, you’ll be overjoyed. Next you need to either allocate a fairly large section of your veggie patch to potatoes and nothing else for about five months or grow them in a lot of large containers. Either way, if you expect to be self-sufficient in potatoes until you can grow more next season – think again. But if you really want to have a go, here’s the important things. They like deeply cultivated light and fertile soils. Don’t lime the soil and don’t over fertilise with a nitrogen rich product. Make sure you buy proper seed potatoes. Don’t use the leftovers from your shopping, as they’re not suited to home gardens, will probably be attacked by diseases, and you’ll most definitely fail and never grow potatoes again. You can cut your seed potatoes in half if you like to double your planting stock, but leave them to dry for a few days to seal the cut surface. Plant them in a fairly deep trench – say 20-25cm deep and 30-40cm apart, but cover them with a mixture of your garden soil and potting mix. This will lighten up the soil for them to grow through. Make sure you mark out the rows at each end of the trench using a small stake or bamboo pole. This way you’ll know where to find the potatoes when you dig them up later. Rows will need to be 50cm apart. This is so you can mound up soil around the potato shoot as it grows upwards. To keep your garden soil light and friable mix it with some organic matter (like grass clippings or sugarcane mulch) so that the mounded soil isn’t too heavy for the developing potatoes. This is important as the potatoes grow off the rising shoots and not from below the seed potato. So doing this will increase your crop no end. Water them in well to start with, but do not over water as they grow. Potatoes hate having wet feet. They will get diseases and the growing potatoes will rot. This is one of the reasons you don’t grow them in our summers. Once the plants have flowered, they tend to stop making new potatoes and will start to then die back. Stop watering them once they flower. To maximise the size of the potatoes, wait until the plants have turned yellow and collapsed down before digging them up with the garden fork. If you want the potatoes to store better, you should cut the tops off the plants and leave the plants for three weeks before digging them up. This makes the potatoes go into a ‘suspended animation’ where they seem to last longer in storage. This is why marking the ends of the rows is important. Growing potatoes in large containers (or coils of chicken wire) uses the same principle, just that you use straw and potting mix instead of garden soil.
Koala food plantation celebrated
The peak local community environment group in Glass House Mountains – Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network or GMAN – held an information and awareness-raising field day recently on the importance of koala food tree plantations. Local State MP Andrew Powell and Federal MP Andrew Wallace, along with GMAN members, koala rescue and rehabilitation staff and others inspected the original koala food tree plantation in Glass House Mountains and heard how vitally important they have been in the care and rehabilitation of countless sick and injured koalas. One injured koala came to the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital from New South Wales, where the carers found that it would only feed on one species of eucalypt which fortunately was available growing at the Glass House plantation. The plantation was originally established in February 2014 by GMAN with funding from a State Government environmental grant when Andrew Powell was the Environment Minister. Over the following three years, the over 500 trees have been a vital source of a variety of gum leaves. However, with the plantation growing on private land, GMAN earlier this year established a new plantation at Beerwah on Sunshine Coast Council reserve lands, thus ensuring the continued supply of koala food into the longer term. Community garden donation Members of the Landsborough Seventh-Day Adventist Community Church recently donated gardening supplies to Morris House Neighbourhood Centre. Tony Lund (pictured on right) who maintains the community garden at the rear of the centre accepted the goods from Chris and Charles Russell. Supplies included bags of mulch and potting mixes as well fertilisers, stakes, seeds and a raised garden bed. Tony grows produce to supplement emergency relief packages handed out by Morris House to the community.

Sport Cross country at last
Contributed by Sarah Johnston Landsborough State School finally had their Cross Country event on Thursday April 20. After two cancellations due to poor weather at the end of last term, it was third time lucky and the weather held out giving us a fine (although a little chilly) day. Congratulations to all students who gave their best including those who will be continuing on to the regional cross country event. All participants received a sticker and points for their house teams. It was fantastic to see many parents/guardians turn up to show their support. A big thank you to everyone who helped make this day finally happen.

First place went to Denis O’Neill with 37 points on count-backs from runner-up Doug Johnstone and third place winner Michael Kapper, both with 37 points. Ball Run Down went to Niel Cronk, Rod Waldron, Malcolm Ewing, Chris Pottinger and Ray Harvey. Nearest to the Pin for the ladies went to Margaret Trigger on the 3rd hole, Chris Pottinger for the men on the 5th hole and Dick Kamen on the 12th hole. Wednesday, April 19: Our ladies played in an 18 Hole Versus Par Competition. First place went to Liz Mellish with +1, Runner up went to Beth Glover with 0 on a count-back from third place winner Susanne Hardy also with 0. Ball Run Down went to Toni Bishop. Nearest to the Pin went to Alison Behncken on the 5th hole. Friday, April 21: Chook run competition was played with a good roll up for a slightly wet afternoon. First place went to Jim Byun, runnerup went to Rod Waldron and third place went to Mark Green and a happy afternoon was had by all. Saturday, April 22: There was an 18 Hole Single Stableford event played with first place going to Mike Finley with 37 points on a count-back from runner-up, Richard Clayton (37) and third place went to Malcolm Ewing with 33 points also on a count-back from Geoff Smith (33). The tennis was enjoyable but unfortunately the Wagtails weren’t winners on the day. Thank you to Claire, Janet, Eunice and Sonia. Friday, April 21: Whistlers played at Witta against Maroochydore Meteors. It was great tennis and we enjoyed every set. There were lots of long rallies and pickups and great shots. We’re all happy that we're back on the courts after 2 weeks off. We were a bit short on games but had good laugh and a good day. Score was 31-36 games, 3-5 sets. Team was Donna Kuskopf, Aki Lepper, Brenda Warner and Maree Hooley. The Wildcats were at Maroochydore against the Blue Bells. Pauline, Libby, Jenie and Sonia did their best but were just a bit short on games at the end. The score was 30-39, 3-5 sets. Wednesday, April 26: Kawana Slammers hosted the day of tennis against Witta Wagtails. Another windy day making the games interesting, but not enough for the Wagtails to secure a win. Thanks go to players Claire, Janet, Pauline and Sonia. Friday, April 28: Whistlers played at Caloundra, against the Hot Chillies. We had long games and good rallies as usualand good laughs. It was a good day with a good win. Score was 43-25 games, 6-2 sets. Team was Liz Mellish, Maree Hooley, Donna Kuskopf and Aki Lepper. The Wildcats were up against Nambas Champers. The Range Croquet Club
Contributed by Neil Lovett In our Bray Shield match at home against Noosa the standout player of the day was Ted Gardner who made a very creditable 10 hoops in his singles game against the much more experienced Hans van Moorst who made 17 hoops. Our Kath Smith played Brian Rudd losing 14-24 and the doubles went the visitors’ way also, 12 hoops to 10. Overall Noosa won 3-0. In perfect weather on Sunday, Sarah Widin and Frances Harper played a singles game which Sarah won 15-8. In doubles Ken Barker and Neil Lovett won from Vince Carbery and Sally Adams 18-12, largely because of a break of 9 consecutive hoops in a single visit to the lawn by Ken. With the cold wind abating on Thursday afternoon it was very pleasant on the lawn. In a singles match Kath outplayed Ken to win 12-6, and Frances beat Bev Sockhill and Neil 9-7. Bev is very new to Association Croquet, and played creditably. We’ve been asked why the maximum score in Association Croquet is 26. In a singles game on each visit to the lawn a player may start a turn by striking either of two differently coloured balls. A point is made by hitting the ball through a hoop. There are six hoops to be run in a fixed sequence in one direction, and then in the other. Each ball must then be hit to strike a centre post called a peg. (This action is called “pegging out”, but players achieving it feel very much alive.) (2 x 12) + 2 = 26. Our lawns are in the Maleny Showgrounds on Stanley River Road. Cross Country at Mooloolah State School That time of year was here again, Mooloolah State School’s annual Cross Country and Fun Run for the Prep and Year 1 students. Students from all year levels came together in their age groups and ran either 3km or 2km depending on their date of birth. Amazing team spirit was shown with students wearing their house colours with pride and displaying fantastic sportsmanship. The sports captains lead the students in war cries and words of encouragement as the students tried hard. Students ran fast and tried hard for the long course and we had some fantastic times amongst the winners. All students tried hard and participation was at an all-time high. 11 of our

students will be off to districts next week to have another go at winning and bettering their times. The winning sports house for the day was Rungert, followed by Westaway and then Maddock. Well done to all students.
