On Saturday morning, Brownie and I headed along to the Glass House Mountains Rural Fire Brigade shed for the brigade’s 70th anniversary celebrations. When we arrived to a pristine looking shed with a sea of blue uniforms, including quite a few of the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services hierarchy, the member for Bancroft standing in for the Minster, our MP Andrew Powell and councillor Rick Baberowski, I figured we weren’t going to a party. However, for all the formalities and special guests the day was still very much a celebration, all about acknowledging the professionalism and long-term dedication from our local rural fire brigade members who serve our community – and what an amazing job they do. Thanks to all the men and women who volunteer their time to provide the rural fire services across our area at Glass House Mountains, Beerwah, Landsborough, Peachester, Maleny and Montville. I should add that while this was an important day with a serious message and we didn’t sing happy birthday to the state’s number one Rural Fire Brigade, everyone seemed pretty happy to have a slice of cake. Local News The first 25 years By Lea Parkes The Maleny Visitor Information Centre (MVIC) celebrated its first 25 years last Friday at an afternoon tea function at the Maleny Community Centre, bringing together current and retired volunteers who have been part of the centre’s journey. Current president Scilla Ecuyer shared the history of how those 25 years unfolded, explaining that the Maleny Chamber of Commerce saw the need for an information centre in Maleny in 1994 to assist the growing number of visitors coming to Maleny. Beryl / Norma Johnston was the coordinator of the founding group who included Loraine Duffy, Bert and Ann Brooker, Julie Salter, Edith Thorpe, Peter Erdmann, Del Friemann, Sam Dawes, and Phil and Patricia Jacobs. Joan Benson became coordinator in 1995 until 2002 when she handed over the reins to Bridget Sparks who brought with her valuable experience in marketing. In January 2009 under Bridget’s leadership the Maleny Visitor Information Centre Inc was established.

Bryan saw the opportunity for MVIC to move into new and more comfortable premises as part of the MCC rebuild, which included two shops at the front. This brought with it huge changes for the volunteers. In 2013 the Maleny Visitors Information Centre moved into shop 2/23 Maple Street, where it is today in what is now a professionally run premises Scilla took on the leadership job in 2013 until 2015 when Geraldine Carson held the position for two years. In 2017 Scilla returned to the role. There were special thanks and acknowledgement of each of the past presidents on the day as well as congratulations to volunteers who had completed ten or more years of service. These volunteers were Verle Ann Attwood, Lorraine Coyle, Helen Evans, Linda Fawkes, Marty Foster, Margaret and Don Ginns, Noel and Kay Kuskopf, Barry O’Connor, Anne Robertson, Bridget Sparks, Bridget Zanter and Laurel Wilson.

By Lea Parkes It might not officially be Knitfest until this weekend but if you have been in Maleny in the past week or so you will have noticed the happy knitters have already been hard at work covering Maple Street in wool and fibre in time to welcome the Knitfest visitors. And if you are wondering where the action will be, there are activities happening all weekend at the Maleny State School (Knitfest Central) and the Maleny RSL Hall (Spinning Central). The Riverside Boardwalk will host the suitcase markets on Saturday between 9am–2pm and at the Maleny Showground on the Saturday there will be activities taking place as well. As the event grows in popularity each year, the organisers have made sure parking is easy for locals and visitors to the event and this year there are two park’n’ride areas with a shuttle bus looping every 20 minutes. One park’n’ride will operate on Saturday and Sunday from 9am–5pm at the Maleny Pioneer Village, corner of Landsborough-Maleny Road and McCarthys Road, and on Saturday another park’n’ride will operate from the Maleny Showgrounds.

Queensland’s No 1 Bush Fire Brigade by Lea Parkes Anyone who lives in Glass House Mountains or who has required the assistance of their local rural fire brigade would agree that they do a top job. What you might not know is that the Glass House Mountains Rural Fire Brigade is Queensland’s No 1 brigade. And no, this isn’t like a Logie award for firies − they were actually the first bush fire brigade registered in Queensland. Back in December 7, 1948 their first meeting was held at the United Fruitgrowers Co-operative Association with 27 members attending. The group was formally registered in 1949, making this year its 70th anniversary.
Last Saturday the Glass House Mountains Rural Fire Station hosted a 70th anniversary celebration for invited guests. On the day, brigade chairperson Alexander Rowley shared with guests a condensed history of the group, explaining that in the early days they just responded to fires based on where the smoke was coming from. The fires were fought with backpacks filled with water and when they ran out of water they relied on hessian bags to beat the fires out. Over the years the number of members waned but the turning point for the brigade was the area’s devastating fires of 1994 that saw a resurgence of interest in locals wanting to participate. Following those fires, a meeting was held with 30

By Sally Joyce Members of the Garden Club, CWA, Historical Society and the school in Peachester joined family members of the late Nessie Pratten to unveil a memorial stone and plaque in the Peachester State School’s ANZAC garden to honour the contribution Nessie made to the Peachester community. Nessie passed away in March 2018 aged 99 and is remembered as a long standing and much loved member of the community for her innate ability to make friends, for her kindness, for her intelligence, her stoicism and ability to speak her mind. She gave 25 years of service as a parent at Peachester State School and, in fact, enrolled her youngest son Billy at the school before he was born as a means of boosting numbers to keep the school open. Nessie was an active member of the CWA and contributed a wealth of knowledge to Peachester’s history archives.

The late Nessie Pratten in 2016 at Peachester State School with garden club friend Trish Bradford One of Nessie’s many talents was mastering the pioneer crafts of lacemaking as well as wool spinning, which she was still doing until her death last year. Nessie loved to share her passion for gardening, which she continued until she was 97. She often stated that gardening was what kept her alive. In 2016 she gifted a rose from her own garden to the school’s ANZAC garden along with a lovely story of its sentimentality. Nessie always took the time to speak to children and help children. She gained so much joy from having children visit her garden. It is was with joy that those who came together celebrated Nessie’s memorial stone, resting in Peachester and surrounded by children playing, under the watchful eye of a rose from her very own garden.

McArdle not to stand in 2020
The State Member for Caloundra, Mark McArdle, announced last Thursday that he will not stand in the state election to be held in October 2020. He was first elected in 2004 and has held the seat of Caloundra for the past 15 years. Mr McArdle said the time had come to move on and for younger blood to step up to the mark and take Caloundra forwards. LNP leader Deb Frecklington said Mr McArdle was a strong advocate for his community and had fought hard for the Sunshine Coast University Hospital and campaigned for better transport infrastructure like the duplication of the Sunshine Coast rail line and Bruce Highway upgrades. “Mark was a respected senior Cabinet minister in the previous LNP government and saved households hundreds of dollars a year by deregulating the South East Queensland retail electricity market. “Mark saw the potential of a new and united political force and was one of the architects of the Liberal National Party,” Ms Frecklington said. Mr McArdle said it has been “an enormous privilege to represent the residents of the state seat of Caloundra”. “I have met and worked with wonderful people in Caloundra, from all sides of the political divide, who have seen the wonder and beauty of the region in which we live. Caloundra Road/Nicklin Way roundabout and indeed Caloundra Road itself is chaos and must be resolved. Duplication of the rail line Beerburrum to Nambour is vital,” Mr McArdle said. Boxing her way to the top By Sonia Clark Last year, GC&M News followed the incredible fitness journey of Beerwah local Reesha Lewis. Readers may remember we tracked some of Reesha’s inspirational progress, including losing half her body weight through a dedicated commitment to local mountain climbing, training and changing her mindset and habits. Last year Reesha was placed second in the women’s section of the King of the Mountain event in Pomona and went on to complete the Kokoda Track. Since then Reesha has continued to achieve incredible fitness results and is now staring down a potential championship boxing career – testimony, once again, to her hard work and sheer determination. Reesha first picked up boxing gloves around 15 months ago when looking for new fitness training pathways to complement her love of competitive mountain climbing. In March last year she joined Body Shot Boxing Club in Caboolture with a view to extending her fitness levels with morning classes twice a week. When her seven-year old son started afterschool boxing classes at her club mid last year,
Reesha began to notice the serious boxers would train for two hours at a time. Encouraged by her trainer, Reesha was keen to give it a go but initially had no interest in sparring (fighting). When she did give it a go Reesha couldn’t even hit the bag! “Around ten months or so ago I thought I’d give sparring a go and kitted myself up with the headgear. I was hooked fairly quickly and did boxing classes every morning during the week and training two nights a week – now I train twice a day five days a week,” Reesha said. Reesha competed in her first fight in March this year and, incredibly, won the State Champion title in her weight division in her third fight, held at the state titles in Brisbane in May this year. Reesha has now competed in five fights with four being stopped and judged TKOs (technical knock outs) in her favour. Reesha’s last fight was against seasoned champion and golden girl Kay Scott, who has more than 150 fights under her belt. While Reesha did not defeat the champion, she has now been placed number two in Australia in her weight category. She has also been invited by Boxing Australia to attend a specialised training camp in Bangkok later this

month as well as a training camp in Canberra at the Australian Institute of Sport in August. “I’m just so overwhelmed that Boxing Australia has offered me these opportunities,” Reesha said. While Reesha won't be travelling to Bangkok she is looking forward to heading to Canberra and wearing the Boxing Australia uniform with pride.

Community News Ben battles for silver
Neighbourhood Centre history celebration
The building that is home to the Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre will celebrate its 80th anniversary on Saturday, July 13, from 10am–2pm, with speeches and performances starting at 10.30am. To mark the significant milestone there will be a display of photos and memorabilia, memories shared of the good times had in the building, a choir performance, a big cake, face painting, food stalls and plenty of opportunities for people to reunite over Devonshire tea and scones. The building was originally the St Columbus Presbyterian Church at Glass House Mountains, so it is likely there are photos in family albums of weddings and christenings around the area. An anniversary booklet will be available for sale. Glass House Mountains judo champion Ben Lewis represented Queensland at the Australian National Judo Championships held recently on the Gold Coast. Even though the slightly built Ben was moved into the 81kg weight division within his ‘No limits category 1’ special
needs group, he proved the saying that “it’s not the size of the dog in the fight, it’s the size of the fight in the dog” that counts. Ben came away with a silver medal, making him the second best judo fighter in that class in Australia on the day. This adds to Ben’s two gold medals at the previous Australian championships and multiple state and other medals. Ben continues to train hard at the Maleny Judo Club with the aim of attaining his black belt, which would be a significant achievement for a special needs athlete in this sport.
University hosts open day
The University of the Sunshine Coast (USC) will throw open the doors of its main campus at Sippy Downs for its annual open day on Sunday, July 21 and at the Caboolture campus on Sunday, August 4. Thousands of prospective students from across Queensland and beyond are expected to attend the event from 9am-1pm to explore the campus and its facilities, discuss study options with lecturers, and learn about university life from current students. The open day will include a special presentation on balancing study with other commitments such as work, finances and family, and another session on how to choose the right degree and make the most of university life. USC academics will provide one-on-one advice about various study programs, while student
support staff will help with tailored information on applying for university, scholarships, financial support and even studying overseas. Visitors can also take self-guided tours of USC’s teaching spaces, research facilities and sporting and social venues, and attend a session that outlines the study opportunities that will be available at USC’s new Moreton Bay campus at Petrie from next year. Maleny forum
Maleny has more than 150 groups and organisations focussing on specific activities, services or projects, with many members active in more than one of these groups. But what do individuals do if they want to express their views, find out more or take action on general issues that impact the community as a whole? For example, many locals are concerned about traffic flow and parking in the main street. Generally such issues are raised by locals within the groups they are involved in or with friends but they may not be discussed or acted upon by the broader community. While the need for some community participatory process has been discussed in recent times, no single organisation has taken ownership of it. A small team of Maleny locals has been researching how other towns and communities have responded to this issue. The next step is to hold a community forum to share what has been learned about how to improve the involvement of local private citizens in public decision-making. Talk turns to fish and turf
By Lea Parkes It is that time of year when the talk at Club Glass House turns to fishing, with plans full steam ahead for the club’s 18th annual fishing competition to be held on August 9-11. Club manager Sharon Bochow is proud of what a great event the competition is each year and also the generosity it brings out in the local business people who continue to support the event each year. Last year the club handed over a cheque for an impressive $6,296.15, which took the combined total funds raised for the Wishlist charity since 2011 to more than $27,000. The funds raised go to providing local paediatric services through the Sunshine Coast University Hospital charity Wishlist. Sharon said the club was fortunate to have many local businesses that have been involved for years and this year she is keen to acknowledge the ongoing support that Go Turf from Glass House Mountains has provided for both the bowls club and the fishing competition.

If you have been to the club recently you will have seen the 320 Wanderer, a car-top tinnie that is the raffle prize for this year’s competition along with five cartons of beer (brand of the winner’s choice). Tickets are $5 or five for $20. This great prize has been donated by the Heilig family owned and operated business Go Turf. They purchased it through Brisbane Yamaha. Following the cheque handover with Wishlist earlier this year, which was held on the bowling green, Matt Heilig said the local family decided that to ensure the ongoing safety of the bowlers they would donate all new turf for resurfacing the area. The Heilig’s are keen to be able to give back to their local community and while they are not bowlers, or from all accounts great fishers, the family are third generation patrons of the club and know the important role it plays within the local community. Being turf farmers they are always keen to help the grass roots in the community.

Ingredients 6-8 chicken drumsticks 1 tbsp of organic coconut oil or olive oil 1 medium onion sliced 4 cups or more (depending on the size of the slow cooker) of mixed fresh vegetables of your choice (eg, cauliflower, carrots, spinach, sweet potato, zucchini, broccoli, celery and mushrooms) 1-2 tbsp of coconut aminos 2 tbsp Meadow & Marrow Bone Broth Concentrate of your choice 1 tsp of Bragg Organic Herb and Spice Sprinkle 2 tsp of Wild Tassie Organic Kelp sprinkles 2 tsp Organic turmeric powder 1 tsp Organic turmeric powder extra 1 cup water Salt and pepper to taste Method Chop all vegetables into large pieces and place in the bottom of slow cooker. Slice onion and set aside. Place oil in a large frypan over medium heat. Once heated place drumsticks into pan and sprinkle with turmeric, salt and pepper on all sides and cook on all sides until brown. Place on top of vegetables in slow cooker. Cook onion in pan until tender and place on top of chicken. Turn pan off and add 1 cup of water, bone broth, kelp and Bragg sprinkles and the extra turmeric powder. Stir until combined and pour over onions and chicken in the slow cooker. Cook on high for 3-4 hours or until chicken is cooked through and falling off the bone or slow for 6-8 hours. Serve with rice or cauliflower and broccoli rice.

Community Groups Tibro’s Netball Club update

Contributed by Tracey Blake March saw the beginning of the 2019 Tibro junior netball competition, with 11 teams involved this year. The junior program is open to children aged 7-17 years. They compete at Caloundra on Saturdays and each team trains at the club during the week. It is a fun way to get kids active and as they progress, the sense of competition seems to kick in as they develop a lifelong love of this fabulous game. Ladies and mixed games are now played on a Tuesday night at the club, which is located within the Glasshouse Mountains Sportsgrounds on Steve Irwin Way. The atmosphere is fantastic with members often remaining to watch and support each other. This season’s finals have just been played. Congratulations to the DCs and the Bandits, this season’s grand final winners. Our second season will start in a few weeks. Preparations for the 2019 Beerwah Charity Sports and Spring Carnival are on track, with an exciting new feature added this year alongside the Super Strawberry Competition. The search for the biggest strawberry has been running for more than 20 years. In 2016 this was expanded with (Photo by Ron Gillinder) a class for the most unusual strawberry, which has brought out some remarkable entries. In 2019 the competition will go a step further and introduce the most unusual fruit or veg. Each round you can enter any interesting or whacky fruit or vegetable from your farm or garden. Entries will be photographed and recorded, and the winner decided at the end of the competition. There will be six weekly rounds. Round one closes on Friday, July 12 and the final round will close on Friday, August 16, a week before the Charity Sports Carnival. Bring entries to the Coochin Creek Fruitgrowers Co-op any time during the week but before 4pm each Friday. The overall champions will be announced at the Beerwah Charity Sports and Spring Carnival on Saturday, August 24.

Lisa gave an inspiring acceptance speech focused on her work with forced migrants and on setting up alternative education centres in developing countries, which was very warmly received by those in attendance. Together with the other recipient of the STEM scholarship, Ambrosia Muir, who is currently undertaking a Bachelor of Nursing Science, both women ideally represent what the Zonta scholarship aims to achieve every year - supporting and encouraging exceptional young women to achieve their worthwhile aims. Maleny Rotary Club’s new president Sherryl Gregory has set her leadership sights on boosting female participation and attracting younger members during the year ahead. Sherryl told members attending the club’s changeover dinner last week that she aimed to further the excellent work carried out by her predecessors while focusing closely on making the club more diverse and inclusive. “In particular I would like to lift female membership from the current 25% t iden New Maleny Rotary pres and increase the number of younger Sherryl Gregory with outgoing members,” she said. “Broadening president Alan Wilson at the the diversity of the background and club’s changeover dinner experience of the membership, although now quite wide, would also be most welcome.” Despite the community’s generally positive view of Rotary, Sherryl believed the public’s knowledge was probably sketchy and most likely still based on the Rotary of yesteryear. “Globally, Rotary is now striving to attract more women and younger people into the ranks of this wonderful organisation so it can continue to deliver for communities around the world,” Sherryl said. LNP mistruths
I refer to Mr Andrew Powell’s letter (GC&M News, June 26) - a letter that misrepresents the B2N rail upgrade and the shameful parts both the Newman LNP government and the federal LNP Coalition have played in its delay. Labor started the rail duplication project under the leadership of the Bligh government. In 2006, the Trackstar Alliance was formed to build the Caboolture to Beerburrum rail duplication, following on from which the Beerburrum to Landsborough rail duplication was to start. The Beerburrum duplication was completed in 2012 and Trackstar were about to continue the project to Landsborough. In 2012, the Newman LNP government was elected. The LNP cancelled the Landsborough duplication project, otherwise I would not be writing this letter. Subsequently, the Newman LNP government announced that the project was being expanded with crossings and road flyovers, and rail duplication extended to Nambour, so more delay. And there it has stayed. This was a classic case of project scope creep, although it was more of a gallop. Subsequently, in 2013, the money set aside for the rail duplication was spent on new trains from India, unsuitable for Queensland Rail. The Queensland taxpayer has incurred a $335 million bill to fix up these shonky trains. Not one has hit the tracks yet in a productive capacity. When Labor was elected in 2016, they had to start all over again. The business case was submitted to Infrastructure Australia in December 2016, where it sat for nearly two years. Today, funds have been confirmed and budgeted, and final designs are under way. The federal government still refuses to fund this regional rail project on an 80:20 basis, the same basis on which they fund the Bruce Highway. Re: Time to deliver
I am disappointed with Andrew Powell’s letter of June 26 in GC&M News. The tone is too negative and he seems to be able to blame the Labor government for the world’s problems without offering any positive solutions. Perhaps he could have enhanced his argument by extolling the achievements of the Newman LNP government. They did such a good job they lost 44 seats after one term! Of course, the railway line to Nambour should be duplicated, as well as construction of the line to Maroochydore. The problem is that governments of all levels and flavours have been talking about this for the past 20 years. It is starting to wear a bit thin. In researching the website of the Queensland Government’s Department of Transport and Main Roads it is revealed that money has been set aside for the duplication in both the recent state and federal budgets. The website goes on to say: “The Queensland Government will continue to have discussions with the Australian Government regarding full funding in line with the 80:20 funding arrangements for National

Land Transport Network projects of national significance, outside metropolitan areas.” Perhaps Andrew Powell can spend his energies in a more positive way and lobby his federal LNP counterparts to try to get the 80:20 funding to happen. Perhaps he can try to seek ways to have infrastructure developed at the same time as urban areas are created instead of as an afterthought. Re: Rail duplication
We do need to duplicate the railway line. The first stage is from Beerburrum to Landsborough, with extra facilities to allow trains to pass at Eudlo, Palmwoods and Woombye. Instead of using his well-funded position and his free unlimited access to our print media to attack Labor, it would be good if Mr Andrew Powell was collaborative, constructive and informative. He could explain the difficulties such as replacing the Landsborough rail crossing. He could tell us the history of rail infrastructure funding in an objective way. The pace of change in our civilisation, as we all know, is rapidly accelerating. With it comes the widespread use of agricultural chemicals to expand food growth and protect from 'predators'. And expanding urbanisation - we see that right here on the Sunshine Coast putting both koalas and kangaroos/wallabies at risk (eg, Caloundra South) - and diminishing forest and bush reserves. With those trends comes a price as we are now well aware - the loss of insects, birds and wildlife including rare and threatened species. On Monday, June 24 on the ABC the Four Corners program was titled ‘Extinction Nation’. Australia has the highest rate of mammal extinctions in the world and is the fourth worst for animal extinctions globally. There are more than 1,800 plants and animals on Australia's threatened species list, including more than 500 animals. While the federal government says more than $400 million is being spent, Professor Brendan Wintle, a researcher with the Threatened Species Recovery Hub, said analysis showed targeted spending by governments totalled only about $121 million. "Unfortunately, our legislation falls down in the sense that it doesn't mandate spending of a sufficient magnitude to actually avoid extinctions," he said. A third of Australia's threatened species were not being monitored and "… we could be losing them and we wouldn't even know”. It looks like the government does not care or not realise the extent of the problem. It falls to citizen groups as in NSW where the Koala Project is trying to save koalas by planting a 100km food corridor. It could work. What for the Sunshine Coast and kangaroo populations? You Said It Puppy farming petition
Now is the time to again sign to request a review and change to the Queensland legislation relating to puppy farming. The first petition has closed for presentation to Parliament and was very well supported with more than 1600 signatures. There is now a follow-up e-petition to keep this issue in front of the state members. It can be easily accessed by going to Current E-Petitions – Queensland Parliament and looking down the list for number 3152-19. Please support this really important call for change in the interests of the welfare of mothers and puppies. There are also two petitions being prepared for the Queensland Government and Sunshine Coast Council. One petition says: "Say 'YES' to change Queensland’s weak ‘Puppy Farm’ legislation" and the other says: "Say 'NO' to kennel for 100 breeding bitches". Muscle on the Mountain cancelled
Organisers of the ninth annual Muscle on the Mountain are devastated that the event planned for this Sunday, July 7 at the Maleny Showgrounds has been cancelled. One of the organisers Lynda Burgess said that as a result of more than 100mm of rain falling on the showgrounds at the end of last week, as well as an extended rainy period in the preceding weeks, they have been forced to cancel the event. Last Friday, Lynda said even after the rain stopped the showgrounds were so wet that there would not be time for the area required to sufficiently dry out before the event. “For months we have been working hard to spread the word about the day and were expecting to see up to 1,000 amazing vehicles including Holden, HSV, Ford, FPV, muscle cars, street machines, hot rods, vintage and classic cars and motorcycles,” Lynda said. With many of the entrants coming from across South East Queensland, the organisers will now focus their energy on making sure people know that that this year won’t go ahead but to mark their diaries for Sunday, July 5 in 2020. Sadly, as the event is as much about a great day out for car lovers it is also an important fundraiser for the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia. To date the organisers have raised more than $80,000 for the cause from past events. They are looking forward to seeing plenty of locals supporting the day next year.

Plastic Free July is a global movement helping millions of people to be part of the solution to plastic pollution, with the goal of having cleaner streets and oceans and beautiful communities. To be part of the movement, take up the challenge to simply choose to refuse single-use plastics. For most of us taking the challenge to stop using single-use plastics requires planning and preparation but you can start slowly and focus on a few areas where you know you can avoid it. Many have already started by saying no to the top four plastics - plastic bags, water bottles, takeaway coffee cups and plastic straws. One of our young-at-heart Glass House Mountains’ locals who is passionate about doing her bit is Lorna Buxton. Not only has Lorna worked out her own strategies for carrying around her “keep cup” for her takeaway coffee but she also likes to reuse fabrics and encourages others to get on board. Last year Lorna was making shoulder bags to carry around her keep cup and she is now upcycling unused fabric/doilies/placemats to decorate “boring” green bags, that can be rolled and tied and kept neatly inside your handbag until they are required. She then donates the bags to Bardo’s in Caloundra to sell to customers and use while they are op shopping. ‘Our communities are our future’ is the primary focus of this year’s $848 million budget as Sunshine Coast Council continues to build momentum and improve local infrastructure. Over the next 12 months, a greater focus is placed on projects that enhance division 1 community health, confidence and connectivity from a very important streetscape upgrade to several park, road and recreation upgrades. For example, there is a comprehensive upgrade for the district aquatic centre at Beerwah, another very exciting preliminary planning project is the Caloundra Road Sport and Recreation Precinct Master Plan and, locally, Landsborough’s strategically important placemaking project. Division 1 has an exceptional range of country townships and these infrastructure upgrades will ensure these areas continue to be great residential communities and destinations full of character for both locals and visitors alike.
Parrot Park Trail Head art and signage workshops
For any interested residents, council is hosting two excellent workshops on Tuesday, July 9 from 4.30pm at Beerburrum Hall relating to the art and signage aspects of the Parrot Park Trail Head project in Beerburrum. Led by Manning Daly Art (local artists), attendees will gain a solid understanding of the history and connection the community has to this space. The second workshop will focus on reviewing the proposed interpretive signage for the new trail head. These signs will tell the local story from the geological and environmental history right through to the modern human connections to the space. Glass House Mountains sports precinct
I am pleased to announce that the latest section of the pathway connecting the Endeavour Bark residential community to the Glass House Mountains township via the sports precinct is now complete. A new feature included in the project is the new concrete cricket pitch. This upgrade provides a safer way for residents to walk or ride into town and, of course, for anybody to take a healthy walk or ride from town to the sports grounds. The next and final stage is to upgrade the unsealed short access road for an even better connection to and from the Glass House Mountains township.

Council has been working with the Landsborough community to develop a shared vision for the town and is now looking at what can be actively done to help bring this vision to life in Cribb Street. Over the coming months, the project team will hold a number of workshops to further develop ideas for Cribb Street. State Member for Caloundra A word from our 2019 YMCA Youth Parliament Member
I recently meet with Charles Trippick, the current YMCA Youth Parliament Member for Caloundra, who lives in Landsborough. I decided to hand over my column for this month to Charles - I hope you enjoy reading his thoughts. I would first like to thank Mr McArdle for the opportunity to write a piece for his column in the Glasshouse Country & Maleny News. It is an honor to be able to share my perspective of youth in our community with a notable local paper. My name is Charles Trippick and I am the 2019 Youth Member for Caloundra as part of the YMCA Queensland Youth Parliament. I am currently a year 11 student at Sunshine Coast Grammar School and I live with my family in Landsborough. “Back in my day...” is a statement so common it’s certain that anything that follows is testament to how easy the kids have it these days and how lazy they are. It’s no secret that much of the older generation are of the opinion that the younger generation just doesn’t work hard enough, whines too much and are just down right lazy. However, I’m sure much of the younger generation would prove that’s just not the case. It’s not the fact that we have it easier or work any less hard. It’s the fact that the trials and tribulations that we must navigate through life have altered. Don’t get me wrong, we’re still fighting over oil, worried about impending war and concerned about the actions of the Reserve Bank of Australia. Yet we are also living in a time where our minimum wage is slowly moving but nowhere in comparison to the rise of inflation. We work just as hard, maybe even harder, but it’s near impossible to fight against rising house prices, accrued debt through tertiary education and no purchasing power. However, it’s not just the financial aspect. We are seeing more politically and community engaged young people than ever. Their voice is being heard and recognised. The 18-35-year-old group is a continual swing set for elections. Not only that but we are seeing rising efforts from Youth Parliament programs and community projects. Projects such as Grammar Helping Hands, a wonderful initiative where students from Sunshine Coast Grammar School help those in need around the community from beach clean ups to house renovations, is just one example of how young people get involved and care for their community. It’s easy to say that the younger generation is lazy and always on their phones. The Mooloolah community has indicated it wants more live local music events in town and, accordingly, the Mooloolah Public Hall will host a family friendly evening of live folk and country inspired music guaranteed to get your toes tapping. The band uses songs, images and spoken word to portray a powerful message of environmental appreciation for the stunning and diverse surrounding landscape of the Sunshine Coast. Tash has recently been in the running to score a spot at this year’s Gympie Muster and by all accounts she has an incredible voice – well worth checking out. Getting a great PA sound in your room You may be involved with a community hall, a place of worship, a school venue or you might have a big music space with a PA in it but it just doesn’t sound very good. How can you get a better sound in your room? Almost all big rooms will present problems for you acoustically. The most difficult rooms are the big rectangular boxes with wooden floors. The sound will bounce around, reflecting off the hard surfaces and certain low frequencies, amplified by the room dimensions, causing standing waves adding a boomy noise to what you are hearing as well. It can be very unpleasant. Heavy duty sound treatments, ie, big bass traps, can tame some of the problematic low frequencies but they generally need an acoustic engineer to assist with the design. So what can you do? Assuming your room is rectangular, you can’t do a lot about the angle of the walls to each other so there will be reflections to deal with. A cathedral or raked ceiling helps a lot and wall hangings, thick curtains and flooring of varied quality will help, as will walls made of different materials - some brick, gyprock, timber or glass - as they present different reflective surfaces to the sound waves. Book cases of varying thickness full of assorted objects will help as will soft furnishings and lots of people. As you might be gathering from this, a chaotic space will usually help the room to sound better! Setting up your PA in less than orthodox ways can assist too. Try going across the room rather than along it and open up the windows and doors as much as possible, especially those directly facing the PA speakers. Turn the music down - the louder you are the more difficult it is to get a good sound. Ultimately a good PA operator is an important part of the team. Good luck. Sharing the warmth at Cappriccios Italian Restaurant The new owners of Cappriccios Italian Restaurant in Maleny, Tamara and Dominic Venditti, who took over from long-time owners (and their parents) Phil and Sonya recently, are keen to retain all the great aspects of the restaurant but they have been brewing up some ideas for changes they would like to introduce. From the end of this month they will be doing a threemonth trial of opening the doors from Tuesday–Sunday for breakfast from 8.30am as well as serving lunch each day. While the breakfast menu is still having finishing touches added, Tam said it would definitely include gourmet style breakfasts with an Italian flavour.
The restaurant has always been open for lunch on Saturday and Sunday, and they are looking forward to being able to provide their regular menu plus a changing lunch specials menu for their diners. They have plenty of hearty, warm dishes on the menu ideal for chilly winter days including their tasty soup of the day, a lovely hot crispy garlic or herb bread, a steaming bowl of pasta, or a generous taste-filled calzone. During the really cold winter days they have a fireplace, as well as a gas heater and throw rugs for those still wanting to enjoy dining on the deck. Don’t forget they have a lovely Romano coffee served with Galliano and an Irish coffee served with Irish whiskey on the menu to warm you up. Tam and Dom are also collecting new blankets, beanies and socks that will be distributed to dinner guests at their pop-up restaurant in Nambour on July 15 in collaboration with the Salvation Army in Nambour. The Sustainable Futures Expo hosted by Maleny Commerce on Saturday, June 22 at the Maleny Showgrounds was a great success with hundreds of people from Brisbane to Bundaberg attending. As part of the event the chamber provided attendees with a feedback form, which on completion went into the draw to win a $500 voucher with one of the businesses on display at the event. Maleny Commerce was pleased with the response, with 82% of the feedback received rating the expo as a four- or five-star event. As a volunteer organisation, the chamber could not be happier with the outcome. The highlights for those attending included the diversity of stallholders and speakers, in particular the variety of local businesses offering realistic, helpful and sustainable products, services without the hard sell and, of course, seeing how many other people were interested in the issue of sustainability. Congratulations to Marta Levay from Beachmere who won the $500 to spend with one or more of the exhibitors. She was excited to find out she had won and couldn’t wait to sit down to write out her shopping list of how to spend it.

In the Garden My first jackfruit experience
Jan Cheal popped into our office recently to show us a jackfruit from her and Graeme’s tree on their farm in Beerwah. I’d never really taken an interest in jackfruit but Jan assured me that once it ripened and softened up that I’d find it delicious. They’ve been growing the tree for years and it bears dozens of large fruits each year, which end up being sold at the markets. When I weighted the fruit, it was an astounding 10kg. However, a quick Google search tells me that they can grow to a stonking 55kg! Jackfruit originates from the tropical South East Asia region and is related to figs and mulberries. It is a common ingredient in South East Asian cooking and is actually the national fruit of Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. Once the giant jackfruit ripened, I cut it open and immediately a heady aroma filled the kitchen - something of a cross between banana and pineapple. Luckily, Jan had warned me to put newspaper down on the bench as the skin and core of the fruit exude a gummy white sap that is extremely sticky and hard to remove from surfaces, the knife, your skin and clothes. To get the gum off the knife and your hands, you just need to use some coconut or vegetable oil, rub it onto your hands or the knife blade, then wash the lot with hot water and detergent. The oil lifts the gum off the surface. If it’s on your clothes, scrub it with some liquid washing detergent before washing as per normal. Lea volunteered to remove the flesh, which is a hands-on job. The flesh comes out as pod-like structures surrounding a large seed. Once removed we had about 5kg of flesh from the 10kg fruit. Eating the fresh jackfruit flesh was delicious – something like a cross between firm custard, pineapple and banana. Ours was pretty soft as we’d probably left it a few days too long to ripen. When not over ripe, the flesh seems to be firmer but just as sweet and delicious. I particularly enjoyed the fresh jackfruit as a dessert with ice cream and maple syrup. One of the beauties of jackfruit is that it can be cooked in dishes. Cooked jackfruit can resemble meat. In fact, there are lots of ideas and recipes for meat-free dishes using jackfruit, including pulled ‘pork’. We cooked the jackfruit flesh in a Thai-style yellow curry with sweet potato, onion and coconut milk. Served with rice and green beans, it was a deliciously sweet curry. Vegetable spaghetti
Also known as spaghetti squash (it’s part of the zucchini/cucumber/pumpkin group of plants), vegetable spaghetti is an unusual and uncommon garden plant. Probably hitting its peak of popularity in the 1980s and ’90s, vegetable spaghetti started out as a quirky dinner party item to impress your guests. Its popularity has waned over the years and you’d be hard pressed finding one at the fruit and veg shop or seedlings at a garden centre, but you can still buy packets of seed if you search around. They grow like a pumpkin – on a sprawling vine – but maybe a little more contained than a pumpkin. To germinate the seeds, you’ll need to ensure that the soil is kept warm – over 21 degrees if possible during the day. Cool soil means no germination. Once germinated, grow them in small individual pots until they start to develop their second set of true leaves (not the first leaves that appear – these are their baby or cotyledon leaves). By then they should have a good strong root system developed and will be ready to plant out. As with all in this group of plants, they really love a rich organic soil, so make sure you’ve added compost and manures. Being scrambling plants, vegetable spaghetti will need space to grow. I like to grow them close to the side of my vege bed where there is a wire fence just nearby. Then I train the vine to grow across and along the wire fence. However, you could try to grow them over an arbour if you don’t have the ground space to let them spread out. As with zucchini, they have separate male and female plants. If you’ve got a good bee population, they will do the pollinating for you. However, to make sure I like to give nature a helping hand by picking the male flower first thing in the morning, stripping off the petals to keep the yellow pollen laden stamens in the centre. Then I dab that onto the female flower receptor parts to transfer some pollen. This way I tend to ensure a better rate of fruit setting. Keep them well watered and well fed during their growth period to ensure that the fruits develop nicely. The fruits have thick yellow skin that should be immune to fruit fly but if you’re concerned just pop an insect exclusion bag over the growing fruit. To cook them, cut lengthways and clean out the seeds. You can steam them, bake them or microwave them. Once cooked, the hard flesh magically turns into long spaghetti-like juicy strings (more like noodles really). By themselves they don’t have much flavour but add some butter and pepper and wow – they’re fantastic. You can eat them out of the skin with a fork or scoop the cooked flesh out and add it to other dishes. Vegetable spaghetti has very few calories on its own and is quite high in B vitamins, potassium and fibre.

He was quite plump so I was wondering if I should give him something or not. I quickly looked around to see what I could give him. I found some nuts and he quickly stuffed them into his mouth. He must have been very hungry, so I gave him an apple. Then it happened as I passed him the apple. He sunk his sharp teeth into my hand. I was able to pull my hand away only to see a big cut and the blood ran down my hand. I had been bitten by a squirrel. Then he ran up a tree where he sat and laughed at me. Sport Glasshouse Country Bowls Club Contributed by David Hayes Monday, June 24: Monthly two-bowl triples was a fantastic morning of bowls with 36 players and visiting teams from Donnybrook and Woodford. Winners of the day on count back were Bruce Angus, Chris Dougan and Rob Scullion with 2 +10. Runners up were Noelene Annakin, Bob Bloomer and John Annakin with 2 +10. Lucky draw went to Peter Gaskel and the team from Donnybrook. Catch you all back here next month. Tuesday, June 25: Division three ladies pennant - Glasshouse away to Solander Lakes saw a fantastic start for our ladies in wet conditions with Maz Idle, Noelene Annakin, Lyn Griffiths and Chris Freshwater winning 21-19. In the other game Lee Myers, Noelle Dean, Joy Reason and Chris Dougan won 22-19. The next game is Wednesday at home. Wednesday, June 26: Ladies day was washed out. Thursday, June 27: Winners of the day with the highest winning score were Carolyn Warren and Dean Shaw +31. Runners up on count back were Michael Frost and Warren Blackbourne +27. Lucky draw went to Doug Sweedman and Allan Pashby. Saturday, June 29: Men’s pennant division five was away to Pine Rivers. It is always a difficult task playing at this club and saw a 2-1 loss. Next week’s game is home to Bongaree where we hope to fight back with a win. Division ten home to Banyo. It was a solid first round for our boys with Rodney Dick’s team getting up but a narrow loss to Warren Blackbourne’s rink and an overall loss by 4. Next week’s game is away to Kallangur. Good luck fellas. Division 11 away to Aspley and both rinks unfortunately had
a loss but hopefully next week the boys will have a win when they play at home to Solander Lake. Good luck to everyone playing pennant in 2019. Please remember no position in any team is guaranteed every week and is based on performance and availability of players week to week. Lend Lease bowls club will be visiting us Sunday, July 14 to play bowls against our members. Please support this day and place your name down on the sheet at the club. Two games of 10 cost $15. A couple of weeks after that we will have our visitors back from New Zealand at 1pm on Wednesday, July 31, which means no morning bowls. Cost is also $15. Contributed by Martine Goedhart Bridge is the most popular card game in the world and is played by more than 220 million people. In 2013, four members of the Beerwah Golf Cub, who also happen to be keen bridge players, thought it would be a great idea to start a bridge club in Beerwah. How right they were! John Marsden started bridge lessons, which are still very popular, and new lessons start again on the July 19 (see ad page TBC). We are a friendly and relaxed group with more than 50 members who play on Tuesdays from 9am-12noon and Fridays from 11.45am-4pm at the Beerwah Golf clubhouse. Playing bridge is inexpensive, can be enjoyed anywhere in the world and it is a lot of fun. No matter where you are, you can always make new friends at the bridge table. The medical profession is only now coming to realise that, as people tend to live longer, remaining mentally fit may be as important as maintaining levels of physical fitness. More often chess, bridge and crossword puzzles are being cited as excellent activities for keeping the brain exercised and stalling the onset of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. A grade first place went to Mike Finley with a score of 69 nett, runner up Thomas Hallam with 70 nett and third to Corey Zammit with 71 nett. B grade first place to Allan Bridge 67 nett, runner up Paul Viertel 70 nett on a count back from Dave Nielsen with 70 nett, third Mike Hallam 71 nett. Maleny Bowls Club Contributed by Graeme Glover The highlight of the week for the Maleny Bowls Club was the difficulty the rain made getting any games completed. Monday monthly pairs was played and won by our visitors from Kilcoy Bowls Club. Congratulations to the winners and a big thank you to all who played. It was great to see so many new faces representing Maleny in this monthly challenge event. It is hoped that they all become regular participants. These types of events are the best way to make big improvements in your game. Wednesday was a wash out but we look forward to seeing all teams this week for the delayed
start of the next round. All welcome at 6pm for 6.30pm start. Friday Scroungers was a mix of good bowls and some damp weather. Feedback about the rule changes is very positive. It was noticeable that all folks were using a variety of shots and different strategies. This will certainly add to the fun and decision-making about risk and reward. Thanks to Jim King and Miles Allen who sought feedback from many players and are refreshing our Friday competition with some scoring and rule adjustments. Some folks feel it will improve their mathematics as well as bowls. All the best to our team representing the club at the weekend carnival in Kilcoy and Mapleton on Monday. On the championship front rain has claimed another victim in the final of the pairs. All the best to the players in this final. A reminder about nominations for remaining games.
