The riders showed up in force for this special day, the cause is a serious one, but it was great to see the fun and enthusiasm shown by both the male and female motorcyclists who participated. We spoke to quite of few of the riders who had come from the south side of Brisbane, and Ipswich for the ride that kicked off at the Ettamogah Hotel at Palmview at 9.00am travelling approximately 200km, with a smoko stop at Kilcoy and then back to the Beerwah RSL for lunch. Have your say Since the local government amalgamation in 2008, all land use and development functions on the Sunshine Coast have been managed under three separate planning schemes (Noosa, Maroochy and Caloundra) – each with a different approach to the way land, buildings and structures are used and developed for the separate areas. A significant task which the first amalgamated council undertook was to start the ball rolling with creating a new planning scheme reflecting the way in which we wanted to see our region progress into the future. It wasn’t just a cut-and-paste job of the three existing documents; it was going to be a startfrom-scratch effort. The process commenced back in late 2009 with the consultation for ‘Our Place Our Future’. On October 3, the state government advised that council may proceed to public consultation on the draft planning scheme. The Draft Sunshine Coast Planning Scheme 2012 sets out the framework to guide growth and development on the Sunshine Coast. Planning affects everybody – it can affect what you can do with your land, what your neighbour can do and what can happen in your street, neighbourhood and town. Council is encouraging everyone to take an interest and make a comment. The documents and maps are extensive and can be fairly daunting. So to help, Council have organised a series of public displays where you can ask for assistance from a council planner. Locally these are: • November 2 – Landsborough Memorial Hall, 2.00pm to 6.00pm; • November 9 – Beerwah Community Hall, 2.00pm to 6.00pm; • November 28 – Glass House Mountains Visitor Information Centre, 2.00pm to 6.00pm; and • November 29 – Mooloolah, Thunderbird Café, 2.00pm to 6.00pm. All the documents, as well as a large range of information sheets, are available at the Beerwah Library or on the council website – www.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au Public submissions and comments need to be received by 4.40pm on Friday, December 14. You can make a submission online, via email draftSCplanningscheme@sunshinecoast.qld.gov. au or as a hard-copy posted to council or dropped into a Customer Service Centre.

Some of the contents of the plan relevant to the Glasshouse Country region. In a $243 million budget for 57 priority road network projects between 2011-2031, the Glasshouse Country region has not one project identified as a priority. And of the 85 projects identified for post-2031, precisely zero are for the Glasshouse Country region. Of the $20 million active transport network projects (paths and cycleways) – 35 in total, the Glasshouse Region has been identified to receive one pathway project at Beerwah valued at $360,000, scheduled for completion 20112016. Of the 47 projects totalling $213 million in the public parks schedule of works, the following are identified for the local region: • Masterplan and develop a natural setting in Beerwah, completion 2012 - 2026, cost $3,983,000 • Provide land and masterplan to provide infrastructure for Beerwah (land only), completion 2021 - 2026, cost $2,000,000 • Masterplan to guide detail design, upgrades at Glass House Mountains, completion 2016 - 2021, cost $3,980,983 • Prepare and implement masterplan to develop at Glass House Mountains, completion 2016 - 2021, cost $991,500 • Implement masterplan to provide infrastructure at Beerwah, completion 2011 - 2016, cost $1,980,583 • Implement masterplan at Landsborough, completion 2011 - 2016, cost $1,980,583 • Review masterplan to consider extension and implement upgrades at Beerwah, completion 2016 - 2021, cost $3,741,500 • Masterplan to provide infrastructure at Mooloolah, completion 2026 - 2031, cost $1,980,583 In the recreation trails network schedule of works (11 projects, total $48,500,000), there are two projects for us: • Secure access, masterplan and develop recreation trails in southern hinterland areas (Glass House Mountains, Beerwah and Beerburrum), completion 2011 - 2031, cost $1,956,358 • Secure access, masterplan and develop recreation trails in the Mooloolah River catchment, completion 2011 - 2031, cost $2,336,983

With the recent dry weather now coupled with hot and windy days, authorities are warning us all to be extra vigilant and fire safe, so as to not create a potentially catastrophic situation such as the region experienced back in 1994. We spoke to Lou Spann, First Officer for the Beerwah Rural Fire Service and he said their crew has been busy in the last fortnight with six large fires, working cooperatively with the Landsborough and Glass House crews to combat many of these. They include a large fire along the Bruce Highway (south of Roy's Road), as well as one at Spanner Road, Glass House Mountains. Two days were spent fighting a fire at Landsborough behind the Big Kart Track where an arsonist was apprehended by police. There were 25 hectares burned out on Bells Creek Road, as well as a fire on Streek Road (off Mt Beerwah Road) Glass House Mountains that came quite close to houses. Last Tuesday a fire on Steve Irwin Way at Beerburrum caused all trains running between Beerburrum and Landsborough to be stopped for a couple of hours. “All fires have been the result of arson and the situation is being made more difficult by the recent conditions in the area being so dry and with so much fuel around. And these dangerous conditions are expected to continue for four to six weeks,” Lou said. Lou warns that landholders and residents who remember the 1994 fires will know that the lead up to that fire season was very similar to what we’re experiencing now. “People are urged to prepare their properties and have emergency procedures in place in case of evacuations if they are necessary.”

Gavin Stewart, Volunteer Community Educator with the Glass House Mountains Rural Fire Service gives the following tips for being bushfire prepared this summer. • At all times you need to PREPARE, ACT, SURVIVE • When the fire danger rating is ‘catastrophic’ leaving early is the safest option. • When the fire danger rating is lower than ‘catastrophic’, one of the most important decisions you need to make is whether you will leave early or stay with a well-prepared property. This decision is the basis of your Bushfire Survival Plan. • The following questions may help you make the right decision for whether you will leave early or stay: • Do you need to consider family members who are young, elderly or infirm? • Are you physically and emotionally prepared to stay with your property? • Do you have the knowledge, skills, and confidence to stay with your property? • Is your home adequately constructed, maintained and prepared to withstand the impact of a fire? • In other words, is your home prepared to withstand the impact of a bushfire? • Do you have well-maintained resources and equipment to fight fire, and do you know how to use them? • Do you have appropriate protective clothing to fight a fire? • What will you do if a rapid onset fire leaves you with no time to leave? Where will you shelter?

ALDI leads the positive charge in battery recycling Glasshouse Country residents can now recycle their common household batteries at their local ALDI Beerwah store, with the launch of the ALDI Activ Energy Battery Recycling Program. ALDI Australia has become the first Australian national grocery retailer to initiate a free in-store recycling service across all its stores. Planet Ark research has found that each year, over 300 million common household batteries are thrown away with ordinary waste and ALDI Australia believes that the recycling program will have an impact in reducing the staggering 8,000 tonnes of common household batteries that end up in landfill every year. Since last Wednesday battery collection bins have been available at the front of ALDI Beerwah store. These bins will serve as collection points for common household batteries including AA, AAA, C, D and 9V. These used batteries will be sent off to be recycled with materials extracted for reuse in other products. Paul Klymenko, CEO of Planet Ark, congratulates ALDI on becoming the first Australian grocery retailer to launch a battery recycling initiative across their store network. “Planet Ark is very pleased that ALDI is taking

Mt Tibrogargan erupts - a local's recollection In 1994 David and Jan Mackison lived in Heritage Drive, Glass House Mountains, not far behind Matilda Service Station.

“The speed and ferocity of the fire was unbelievable. The whole mountain just exploded in flames. It looked something like a volcano, which is quite ironic. “We went to bed concerned, but not really thinking we were in immediate danger. “Monday morning, off to work I went at 6.30am driving to Brisbane knowing that the fires were around, but again not considering them a direct threat. “Then my wife rang at 9.00am to say that the winds had changed and the fires had flared up and they were out of control, and she wanted me to come home straight away. “I got back to the Beerburrum turnoff on the highway at about 10.00am, and was lucky enough to be one of the last cars let through before the authorities closed off the road. “When I got home, I worked to secure the house as did the neighbours with their homes. “The rest of the day I worked with the Moffat’s helping them race around putting out spot fires on the pineapple farm and surrounds.

On Saturday, November 6, everything seemed like a normal weekend. The day was hot and dry, but so had a lot of the days before. Then on Sunday, they noticed a glow in the western sky way over the back of Mt Tibrogargan and a lot of smoke. “Must be a big fire somewhere, but nothing to be alarmed at,” thought David, as it looked to be a fair way out in the forest. By early evening, David took the first of a series of 15 photos (a selection of which are shown below) from his front verandah which tracked one of the most catastrophic events to have happened in the area within living history. The fire had reached the western side of Mt Tibrogargan just before 8.00pm. David’s photo’s show that within half an hour, the fire had raged over the whole mountain, sweeping down and around the eastern face, totally engulfing the mountain.

People were afraid that Matilda’s would go in the fire. David recalled that it was a hectic day, and there was a horrific heightened expectation people felt just waiting to see where the next outbreak happened. “The fires were spotting all over the place. Because of the winds, embers where landing everywhere and the conditions meant that they would erupt into flames very easily,” he said. But by the late evening on that Monday, the fires had moved away and people’s perception of the immediate threat had lessened. “Upon reflection, that emergency we felt hadn’t gone; it had just moved south or west where someone else was feeling the exact same terror. The devastation caused by the fire left the community in shock. “We were driving around stunned and depressed. Everything was burnt, the normally lush forests were like blackened moonscapes. And the stories of the lives lost – it was just a horrendous time – one which I never want to experience again.”

Playgroup turns 21 In December the Glasshouse Country Baptist Church playgroup will celebrate its 21st birthday. Jeanette Carnett or ‘Miss Strawberry’ as she is known, has been co-ordinating the group for the past 10 years and is looking forward to the celebration which will be held at Pioneer Park at Landsborough. Baptist church member Heather Gillam said the playgroup started with six ladies in the old Beerwah Baptist Church which is now home to Church on the Rise. “The group was led by Desley Gent and was formed to share our love and Christian faith with the ladies in the community,” she said. Heather too is looking forward to the celebration and will be bringing along her grandson Ryan, three, who is the second generation to attend the playgroup; his dad Ben was also three-years-old when he went along.

Miss Strawberry said she likes to see the mums feel spoilt; and it was great to see how much they could enjoy the experience as well. One mum Lynelle Sim and her daughter Isabella, who recently moved to the area, have really enjoyed getting involved in the group. They’ve found it an excellent way to settle into the area and meet other mums and kids. Lynelle said it also meant that next year when Isabella goes to Kindy she will already know six other children in her group which should make the transition so much smoother. Miss Strawberry is keen to spread the word about the celebration and hopes it will be a reunion for families who have come along to the group over the past 21 years. If you would like to come and celebrate, the event will take place from 9.00am – 11.00am on Wednesday, December 12. Please bring a small plate to share for morning tea at 10.00am.

My youngest and I tumble, disorganised and dishevelled into the most wonderful two hours of the week….Playgroup. Wonderful caring mothers and fathers gather, sharing anecdotes and stories, some light hearted and funny, others deep and heartfelt, where many lifelong friendships are being formed. Giggling, innocent, much loved children skip from one exciting activity to another. Miss Strawberry, known to us by no other name, seems to glide angelically between parents and children with an endearing and welcome smile. By example, Miss Strawberry teaches us to treasure life, be positive and selfless, be forgiving and grateful…..She is the inspiration behind our much loved Playgroup. Time for morning tea and magically delicious treats appear for both the parents and children to enjoy. This is yet another wonderful surprise, the dedicated and compassionate church volunteers who not only provide, but also prepare these tasty indulgences. They too seem to float angelically and quietly amongst us. Miss Strawberry guides us through a moment of reflection to thank God for our fortunate lives and pray for the future. disappeared, the room darkens, inspiring music, bubbles and dancing fill the room. I can’t help but feel enveloped by the loving warmth that surrounds me. When the beautiful invasion of bubbles has been popped by chubby little fingers, we settle down for the cuddle song. Our treasured two minutes of the week where parents and children sit on soft pillows listening to the song ‘I love you this much’ simply embracing each other, and IN the moment with no distractions, where all our worries and concerns melt away. It is here I reflect on how blessed my life is and how grateful I am for my divine children. The philosophy behind this playgroup is for parents and children to connect, celebrate and enjoy time together. This is wholeheartedly achieved in an occasion fit for an annual event, but is organised and hosted by Miss Strawberry and her amazing friends twice a week. To Miss Strawberry and your remarkable friends, I cannot express enough how inspiring you all are. Please accept my most sincere and heartfelt thanks for helping to create some of the fondest memories of our children’s young years that we will carry with us throughout our lives and you in our hearts forever.

Unsung Hero - Phil Siggers Volunteering is something that can easily be described as a win win for everyone involved. The person that offers their skills and time can make a genuine contribution to the organisation / group they’re volunteering for and it can also give them a real sense of personal achievement. And in the case of well-known Beerwah local Phil Siggers the volunteering work he does, also contributes to the wellbeing of future generations. Phil’s passion is the environment and ensuring it is protected. His commitment to the cause sees him doing a range of volunteer activities, as well as being involved in lobbying for change. For the past three years Phil has been an active and enthusiastic member of the Sunshine Coast Koala Rescue Team. Ray Chambers from the Koala Rescue service said Phil’s main function was working in the team of fundraisers as well as creating awareness for the service by talking to groups and organisations to encourage them to make donations to the service. He has also worked on sourcing trees that can be donated for koala feeding. Phil has been an animal lover since he was a child and this love has seen him volunteering at the Wildlife Hospital two days a week for the past three and a half years. He recently joined the volunteer team at Mary Caincross Sceneic Reserve – where he will be undertaking training and will then take on the role of ‘meet and greet’ at the centre, talking

to visitors at the centre before they go on the rainforest walks. Phil is also a member of the Coochin Creek Bushcare Group, the group formed earlier this year and their works predominately involves clearing the weeds and improving the natural environment. He is a member of the Sunshine Coast Environment Council and when he sees an issue locally that concerns him – he makes sure that the Environment Council is informed. When you speak to Phil about the activities he is involved in – you really don’t get the feeling that he sees it as work, and I guess it comes back to the concept that if you do something you love, you never work a day in your life. On behalf of our community and its future generations thanks Phil - top job!

Community News Checkout our ‘Strongmen’ DisabiliTEA to support fair national system The third annual Glasshouse Mountains Strongman Challenge has been scheduled for Saturday, December 15. The event will be held at 1.00pm at Fitness Plus, Roys Road, Beerwah. The event will be MC’d by local Strongman competitor Tim O’Shea, refereed by Sue Metcalf (international Strongwoman competitor) and Matt Aichholzer (Brisbane’s Strongest Man 2011).

A DisabilliTEA morning tea was held at the Endeavour Recycled Clothing Beerwah last Friday to promote support for the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). The event was one of more than 1,700 morning teas held all around Australia on that day as part of the Every Australian Counts campaign. They hope to send a message to political leaders that the NDIS is the only fair and equitable way forward to ensure that people with a disability can have the opportunities of an ordinary life which the majority of people take for granted. Last year’s Productivity Commission report said that people with a disability have ‘little choice’ and ‘no certainty of access to appropriate supports’ and the NDIS would address this inequality.

From July 2013, 20,000 people with a disability will start to benefit from the NDIS at five launch sites –– but no date has been given for the national roll-out and those who supported DisabiliTEA Day on October 26 asked the vital question: when is the NDIS coming to my community? Endeavour Foundation’s Chief Executive Officer is David Barbagallo, who is also the Queensland convenor of the Every Australian Counts campaign, and he believes that the NDIS is within touching distance. Neighbourhood Watch News Mooloolah Valley Pharmacy Community Grants Applications are again being sought from Community Groups in the Mooloolah community for the Pharmacy’s Community Grants Program. Now in its sixth year, the program has benefited 10 community groups, helping them to realise the completion of various projects. The aim of the program is to assist local organisations in building the community by contributing to the cooperative, social,

educational or cultural wealth of the community, to enhance the natural environment, or to purchase items that will assist eligible organisations. Information and application packs are available by calling into the Pharmacy. Applications close November 30 and funds will be available from early 2013. Projects of all sizes will be considered and smaller organisations are particularly encouraged to apply.

School News School turns red for Daniel Child Safety Awareness was the major focus at Landsborough State School when they recently participated in Day for Daniel. Now in its eighth year, the annual Day for Daniel is an initiative established by the Daniel Morcombe Foundation and aims to make the world a safer place for our children. This year's event held extra significance for Landsborough students as it refreshed memories of Bruce and Denise Morcombe's personal visit to the school in February, when they spoke to the entire school about their experiences and child safety. The school turned ‘red’ as staff and students were encouraged to dress in red, the colour Daniel was wearing when he disappeared and now the symbolic colour for Child Safety Education. Even the tuckshop became involved with a special red themed menu for the day. Students could purchase items like hot dogs, red jelly cups, strawberry jam sandwiches and red cup cakes. Day for Daniel was highlighted by a visit from school Adopt-a-Cop, Senior Constable David Caffrey, who spoke to students about being vigilant and staying safe. Students also participated in various other safety activities including reading books and watching DVD's relating to child safety issues. The day was a

Last week at Mooloolah State School, Operation Christmas Child was ‘wrapped up’! Students, families and local businesses proved that the gift of giving is alive and well, and the school was abuzz with bright Christmas paper, donations, sorting, packing and gift-wrapping. Coordinated through the school RI program, this annual project engages the children and community in sharing and caring for others, and demonstrates real love at Christmas. The goal to surpass last year’s 81 boxes was accomplished, with 88 shoeboxes packed full of special gifts for some very special children in remote PNG and outlying Islands of Australia. In the Glasshouse Country News two weeks ago, students appealed to the community and local businesses to help cover the cost of sending the boxed gifts. The response was amazing and $440.00 was raised! Together with the shoebox tally, this is the best ever result we’ve had for Operation Christmas Child.

Mooloolah State School and the Religious Instruction program coordinators wish to send a huge thank-you to all the students, parents and teachers, and to the local businesses that generously helped. Bindi and Robert Irwin have put the word out that they are encouraging other local youngsters to participate in the Australia Zoo Wildlife Warriors Readathon. The month-long reading frenzy extends until Steve Irwin Day, on November 15. Local Wildlife Warrior Chloe Tsangaris had taken up the challenge and so far she has already read 26 books and she has a goal of finishing 50,

which is a big step up from the 23 that she read last year. Third mountain rescue in eight days By Dave Erbacher and Louise Murray Over the weekend the local SES crew completed two rescues on Saturday - the group was called at 1.10pm to assist in the recovery of a 70-year-old man who was experiencing severe chest pains whilst walking on the Trachyte / Mt Tibrogargan walking circuits. Beerwah Paramedics, Julian, Craig and Terry were in attendance and after stabilising the patient, assisted in his conveyance in a stretcher back to the car park arriving about 2.30pm. He was subsequently conveyed to Caloundra Hospital for further checks. Group Leader, Robert Barry thanked the crew Tim, Robert, Roger and Dave and several young men who had just completed the Tibro climb. On Sunday, the group were called to an injured hiker on Mount Ngungun. The fall was coincidentally on the same stretch as the accident on the previous Sunday. Collette, and her husband Steve (both fit and in their 40’s) from Kawana were hiking Mount Ngungun, when unfortunately Collette slipped. She sustained a very obvious fracture to her lower leg (tibia/fibula). Four paramedics were in attendance. The paramedics did request a helicopter but there were none available. Collette was stretchered down very ably by using a belay set-up by the SES. “Thank you very much to the SES volunteers Tim, Roger, Trish, Tarra and Louise. It is also always so nice that there are ready volunteers from the public, and this was so on Sunday. It was much appreciated,” said Robert Barry. www.gcnews.com.au

On Friday, October 19 the Draft Sunshine Coast Strategic Plan was released for consultation and comment. I am far from convinced that our communities have been well served by this plan after attending one presentation, looking at council website and working through the CD council have provided. The volume of information is large and will require considerable time to read and evaluate. This is a one in 10 year chance for you to have your say. Contributed by Helen Page Earlier this year, with other members of the Peachester History Committee and Friends of Bankfoot House, I joined a tour through the WW1 battlefields of France and Belgium, the area known as the Western Front. This was an unforgettable experience, and we were honoured to visit the graves and memorials of several ‘local boys’ as well as relatives and family friends. While researching in preparation for the trip, we became aware that many of our names of interest were not to be found in the war cemeteries, but at the memorials to the fallen. The Australian Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux commemorates the 11,000 Australian diggers who ‘fell in France and have no known grave’. In Belgium on the panels of the Menin Gate Memorial at Ypres there are another 6,191 names of men of the AIF. The total Australian losses during WW1 were horrific: 60,000 fatalities from a force of 413,000. It is almost impossible to comprehend these figures; but the thought that more than 17,000 of these young men could not be accorded the dignity of a known resting place was for me the most disturbing impression from the tour. Every one of the casualties represents

a family losing a father, son, husband or brother; but for the ‘missing’ the tragedy was often compounded by years of uncertainty. The service files at the National Archives (all WW1 files now available digitally) reveal the family distress through letters begging for news. For example James Alexander Page, grandson of Peachester pioneers James and Margaret Page, was killed in action at Pozieres on August 5, 1916; however at the time he was listed as missing. His service file includes letters as late as 1921 still looking for answers. At the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial we were pleased to pay our respects to James, along with other local diggers, Robert and Alexander Gilvear of Glass House Mountians, and Arthur William Storr whose brothers settled at Peachester after the war. The First World War will be the theme at the PHC meeting on Sunday, November 4, including a report and slide presentation by the Western Front travellers.

You Said It It’s disgusting I have just come back from taking my dog for a walk around the block, and I am amazed at the amount of uneducated recyclers about. In a space of a kilometre I noticed a large blanket, a squashed up venetian blind, and countless recyclables in plastic bags. What a shame all the complying people's recyclables are now contaminated and the whole truck load is classed as land fill. Council should refuse to collect these bins as well as bins which have their lids ajar. It's disgusting that people are so lazy. A. McMaster Mooloolah

Distorted facts In response to two letters in your ‘You Said It’ section of Glasshouse Country News, October 17 2012) ‘Pain and misery’ and ‘Animals continue to suffer’. People involved in breeding and rearing animals are not cruel as suggested, as the end result of the endeavours would not be met. The writer doesn’t have a good knowledge of the treatment of animals aboard specially constructed ships for transporting livestock. True, profit is the main aim of business and if animals were treated as he suggests there would be no profit for anyone involved in the industry. Australia would lose an export which was recently proved with the suspension of exports to Indonesia both from personal and Government revenue. To my knowledge making a profit has not become a criminal offence in Australia. The ill-treatment of animals at overseas backyard slaughter houses is unfortunate, but this is a very small percentage of the animals transported. It must also be remembered that in many of the recipient countries the consumers buy their meat daily due to the lack of refrigeration facilities. This, coupled with religious methods of killing, negates the cry to export, from Australia, slaughtered animals. It should be pointed out that Australia is doing a great deal to improve slaughter house conditions. It should also be noted that if export of live animals were banned from Australia there are other countries who would willingly reap the benefits of the market. Clarification of a few issues Re: Article about Mooloolah Valley Country Club in GCNews edition October 24.

In June 2011 a special meeting was called at the club for the purpose of electing an interim committee to attend to the affairs of the club until an Annual General Meeting could be called. I was elected to this committee, as were seven others. This election was witnessed by a large audience. Upon examination of the situation it was immediately obvious that the interim committee had inherited a serious financial situation. We continued to trade until September. During this brief period we were able to pay wages and other costs, including insurance premiums. We were making a small profit but it was not enough to manage the inherited debt. As a result the club ceased trading in September 2011. The committee continued to pursue insurance claims and we were very close to meeting the requirements for a settlement. We went through an extensive process to rebuild the books, and appealed to creditors to assist with this process. We also had to have a gaming audit, but did not have the resources to pay for it. The rest is now history. Your article mentions that Williams Hall Chadwick is owed approximately $48,000. It is my understanding that this company audited the affairs of previous committees of the club. To me

$48,000 is a lot of expensive auditing. Surely they should have realised that the club was in difficulty and should have acted earlier? Your article also mentions that, in a questionnaire provided by the insolvency auditor, I stated that the failure of the club was due to ‘bad management, both deliberate and accidental, by committees and staff over several years.’ It is true that I wrote this but nobody, including Mr Morton, asked me why I chose these words. In conclusion I would like to extend my thanks to the other members of the interim committee. It became painfully clear that the task we inherited was going to become very hard and difficult. I believe that we gave it the best shot, but it was the lack of accountability and diligence shown by the previous committees and managers that beat us in the end. Brad Boustead Glenview

Accident – no accident On Saturday, October 20 my husband took our three kids to Bribie Island for a day on the beach. He was waiting for other family members who were coming up from Brisbane whilst the kids were playing in a playground behind him. Within 10 minutes of arriving, he heard an almighty scream which was coming from our four-year-old boy. Our oldest son ran over, picked him up and carried him to his dad. He was screaming hysterically and was in a lot of pain. He managed to tell dad that a 'big boy' had catapulted him off the see-saw because he wanted a turn and decided this was a good way to get rid of a little boy! Not only did he not check to see if he was ok, he legged it. What was more unbelievable was that the boy’s parents also decided to run and leave my husband and two other of our kids, struggling and without help. My husband spent six hours at A & E in Caboolture, where following x-rays, was told that a very nasty spiral fracture on his femur was the result of this violent behaviour. We spent another four hours in A & E at Redcliffe on Sunday and another six yesterday for further pain relief and more castings. I am now left with a little boy in a cast, in major pain, sitting in a wheelchair - losing money from not being able to work to look after him, paying for medical bills, wheelchair hire and medication, plus further treatment with a bleak outlook for his leg, thanks to a bully and irresponsible parents! You know who you are - teach your child a lesson in behaviour and be a responsible parent and at least check on the injured party! Accidents happen, this however was the act of a bully with no manners and no concern for anything he did. Shame on you! K. Shepherd Beerwah

Residents of Peachester have communicated their desire over the years to have the speed along Peachester Road through the Township reduced from the current 80km/h. I have recently been advised by the Department of Transport and Main Roads that the speed has been reviewed and will now be reduced to 60km/h by the end of the year. This is good news for people who have raised concerns for the safety of school children and people using the local shops. The review considered many factors including road function, traffic speeds, speed environment and crash history.

Funding boost for koala rescue and rehabilitation

A petition urging the State Government to immediately review and improve this intersection closed on Monday, October 29 and I’d like to thank the local community for throwing their support behind it. At last count, the online and hardcopy petition had attracted nearly 700 signatures which is a fantastic result. These items will be tabled in Parliament this week and then presented to Transport Minister, the Honourable Scott Emerson. This intersection is very dangerous for people to attempt to cross, particularly as it is located out the front of Beerwah State School. As soon as I receive a response from Minister Emerson I will provide an update.

Over the coming weeks my wife Judy and I will be attending a series of school graduation, academic award and presentation evenings in the local community. The Newman government has reinforced its commitment to koala protection, launching a new grants program for groups involved in koala conservation services. The Koala Rescue and Rehabilitation Grants will be available to eligible front-line organisations that provide an invaluable service to the community through their work with sick, injured and orphaned koalas in Queensland. By providing this funding for koala rescue and rehabilitation the Newman government is taking action to address other issues that affect koala numbers such as attacks from domestic animals and vehicle strike. The grants program is aimed at building the capacity of koala conservation groups to enhance their ability to effectively deliver rescue and rehabilitation services now and into the future. Beerwah Sportsground will host the Sunshine Coast Kennel Club’s next Championship Dog Show on Saturday, November 17 commencing at 4.00pm. The show will have seven rings operating simultaneously with an entry of about 700 dogs which cover up to 120 different breeds. Many of these will be the regular favourites but there will also be many unusual and rare breeds shown as well. Judging is alphabetical by breed so Afghan Hounds will be on early, while Welsh Corgis may not be in the ring until later in the evening. The club encourage any and all to come along and enjoy their show. Exhibitors are more than willing to chat about their breeds and the showing is quite amazing and interesting to watch. There will be ‘doggy product’ stalls and other stalls of interest. Catering is provided at the canteen and also a coffee van and ice-creams.

N is for Nicotiana

As with most people, I was introduced to some aspects of the genus Nicotiana at a young age. Nicotiana tabacum is the source of the tobacco leaf and smoking was common amongst the adults around me. It was not until many years later, while working as a gardener in London, that I discovered the ornamental side to this group of plants. Nicotiana is a genus of about 70 species, mostly found in the Americas and Australia. It was named in honour of Jean Nicot – a 16th century French ambassador to Portugal who introduced the plant to the courts of Europe for its medicinal properties. Supposedly it could cure many forms of ailments including cancer. Australia has 21 native species, some of which were chewed by members of the indigenous population as a stimulant. All plants in this genus contain nicotine and other alkaloids which are toxic. Extracts from some species have been used to commercially produce pesticides but modern synthesised pesticides have seen a decline in this production. Home and organic gardeners can create their own extract to use. As with any pesticide, care should be exercised in handling and applying it, as it is a poison. Flowering Tobaccos are a beautiful addition to border plantings and cottage gardens. Their drooping trumpet shaped flowers work well on mass of scattered amongst other plants, rising up like a beacon. Nicotiana alta is a one metre tall, short lived perennial which is best grown from seed and left to naturalise parts of a garden bed. Nicotiana sylvestris is a very fragrant species suited to growing in shady conditions, though the plant is taller than most others and not suited to border plantings. Most Nicotiana are frost tender and annuals should be planted out in spring as the temperature starts to rise. They can be grown in full sun to part shade as long as they get three to four hours of direct sun each day. It should be noted that a common weed plant on the Sunshine Coast, Wild Tobacco is, in fact, Solanum mauritianum and not a Nicotiana. It is a member of the same family, Solanaceae, which contains the likes of the tomato, petunias and black nightshade. In London I dealt with the hybrid Nicotiana x sanderae, a low growing annual with a profusion of flowers in white through to reds and purple. The evening scent of these plants hooked me and takes me back over the seas when I come across it here.

A meeting was held in Glasshouse Mountains in September to explore the possibility of starting a Glasshouse Artists Trail. It’s hard to believe that Christmas is nearly here. For all of its commercialism, Christmas reminds us just how much God thinks of us - He sent His son Jesus to come and live among us. Jesus was born somewhere around 6 - 4 bc. Apparently when the modern calendar was organised they made some miscalculations in the date. During this time King Herod the Great was in charge of Israel. He was called the great because he loved to build great things. To build his favourite palace Herod literally moved a mountain. He took the top off one mountain and used it to make another mountain higher and then build his palace on top of it. The swimming pool at the bottom of the palace is bigger than a soccer field - talk about overkill imagine having to clean it. Jesus was born just six kilometres away in a small country town called Bethlehem. Unlike Herod who lived in luxury, Jesus was born in a cave that was used as a stable. Forget the Christmas cards, Bethlehem is full of caves that were used as stables, wood was far too expensive and difficult to get. Even the manger he was put in was carved out of a large rock. It probably looked like the old concrete laundry tubs of our grandparents for the same reason - wood was too rare to use, while rock is

everywhere in Bethlehem. When Jesus was less than two, a caravan of scholars from a foreign nation came to Herod and told him that the promised King had been born. If the prophecy was and is true then the coming of Jesus is the greatest event in human history. Herod called the religious leaders of the day and they told him that the promised king was born about six kilometres away. Six kilometres is not a long walk, just an hour or two. Yet the terrible untold tragedy of the Christmas story is that no one went and checked it out except a group of foreigners. Even the religious clergy of the day – who were clinging onto the promise of a coming king, didn’t check out this child. During this Christmas season we are going to hear lots of Christmas carols, we are going to hear a lot about Jesus, but most people will be like Herod and the clergy and the court of Jesus’s day - no one is really going to pay attention to the greatest event in world history. Don’t be like the people of Herod’s day - be like the wise scholars and check Jesus out for yourself.

Five reasons to celebrate sports Five times Olympic champion Clint Robinson was the special guest at Glasshouse Country Christian College’s Sports Awards’ Night last Wednesday. Mr Robinson grew up on the Sunshine Coast and had a love of sports from a very young age. “I remember my grade eight teacher we dubbed as ‘Mr Cool’ telling me that whatever I did, to make sure I gave it everything I had,” Mr Robinson said. Mr Robinson presented medals and trophies to GCCC young sportsmen and women and then spent some time telling the students about some of his experiences as an Olympian and athlete while GCCC’s Head of Sport Mr Matthew Beattie interviewed him. When asked what his biggest challenge was, Mr Robinson was torn between two major experiences. “Hurting my shoulder very badly and then having to spend hours in rehab each day was very difficult but my biggest challenge was performing my first drug test,” Mr Robinson said. “The only person available to supervise was a female and I’ve always been very shy so I’m not sure which one of us went the brightest red when it was time to provide the sample,” he said. Clint Robinson won a complete set of medals at the Summer Olympics in Barcelona 1992 and became the first Australian canoe/kayak gold medallist. Mr Robinson also enjoys a rich history of achievements in the Surf Life Saving and was awarded an OAM for the finest national 30 |

championship record of any surf lifesaver when he reached 30 gold medals. Approximately 300 people attended the evening which began with hair raising demonstrations by GCCC’s prize winning cheerleading teams. The girls somersaulted, danced and launched themselves in the air with amazing agility and grace.

The Primary Sportsman of the Year was awarded to Ryan Sauer and for the second time running Natasha Hoeksema won Primary Sportswoman of the year. The title of Secondary Sportsman of the year went to Mitchell Fraser and the Secondary Sportswoman of the year was awarded to Andrea Little.

The wind dropped a bit and the sun was shining on 60 girls as they played a Stroke event for trophies kindly donated by Lyn Lambert and Ros Jamieson. In conjunction with the daily Stroke competition, we played the final Medal event, the Medal of Medalists, which was very well won by Cathy Stone who came in with a great score of 69 Nett. For her win in the Medal event, Cathy took home a voucher for some lovely pampering at the hands of the girls at Beerwah Hair and Beauty. A big thank you to Vicky and her team for their generous support of the ladies competition. Cathy not only won the Medal but also the daily competition for a trophy donated by Lyn Lambert. Roselie Green was runner up with a score of 71 Nett. Winner of Division 2 was Pat Chapman who came in with a score of 70 Nett to take home the trophy donated by Ros Jamieson. Runner up was Joan Swyny with a score of 73 Nett. The Ball Rundown went to 75 Nett. Lesley Eggleston had her radar tuned in to take out the NTP on both numbers 2 and 5, Sonia Kenway took out 16 and Ruth Bowie won the 18th with a birdie. Until next week, stay safe and good golfing.
