If you read last week’s GC&M News you will no doubt have seen our call out for readers to do our online survey to assist us in understanding our readers’ needs. Thanks to everyone who has already taken the time to provide valuable feedback to help us to make the paper even better in the future. By Sonia Clark Long-running local community organisation Knitting for Brisbane's Needy (K4BN) has been collaborating with the Beerwah Hotel since the beginning of this year to convert recyclable cans and stubbies into cash. Peter and Karen Croke, from the Glass House Mountains based charity, reckon that since February this year they have sorted through up to 15,000 containers from the hotel. To date the community-minded couple have raised more than $1200 through the Containers for Change initiative. Peter explained that he drives to the hotel to collect the recyclable items. He then takes them home and sorts the items, which are bagged up ready for recycling about every three days, before taking them to a recycling centre at Caboolture. “We generally pick up a couple of large bags at a time but after a big weekend or night at the hotel we’ll often easily collect eight or more bags! Steve and the team at the Beerwah Hotel have been an absolute godsend by allowing us to utilise this initiative,” Peter said. K4BN has been operating for more than 13 years. Peter and Karen use the funds generated through the pub collection towards creating hygiene packs, which they make up and distribute to the homeless and needy throughout South East Queensland. Each pack contains items such as shampoo, deodorant, tissues and toothbrushes

Peter picks up another load of bottles ready for recycling – everyday necessities that most people take for granted yet for those in need are often considered luxury items they cannot afford. Beerwah Hotel’s marketing and loyalty manager Cassie Orreal said that the hotel team was really pleased to be able to support such a worthy locally based organisation. “The tireless work that Peter, Karen and their volunteers do is just incredible. We think it’s great that through this initiative the hotel and our customers are able to give back to the community. We are so happy to see the funds collected supporting the work of this deserving local charity,” Cassie said.

Park crunch time

Poor behaviour may see dogs banned in Maleny Dogs continue to be an issue for our local townships, especially with the ever-diminishing size of urban land blocks making it necessary for people to exercise their dogs on public pathways and parks. Cr Jenny McKay recently reminded Maleny dog owners to adhere to the rules when walking their dogs otherwise dogs may be banned from these areas. Speaking about the Maleny wetlands in the Unity Water treatment area on the old Porter's Farm in North Maleny, Cr McKay asked people to ensure that their dogs are kept on leash at all times. She said Sunshine Coast Council local laws officers would be patrolling the area. “Having a dog off-leash in this area will result in a $243 fine per dog. “While the majority of owners do the right thing by keeping their dog on a lead, unfortunately there are some who do not,” Cr McKay said. In a worrying move, this has prompted some concerned park users to call for a ban on dogs. “As a result, council receives numerous complaints and recently a request to have this area declared a no dog zone,” Cr McKay said. Maleny is one of the few major towns within our readership that does not have a dedicated and fenced off-leash dog exercise park, although dogs

are allowed off-leash at the Maleny Showgrounds. Plans for the Maleny Precinct show a large area allocated for a fenced dog park to be located on the top northern side but funding is yet to be allocated, so there are no timeframes for its construction. Landsborough, Beerwah, Glass House and Palmview all have established fenced dog parks. The communities of Mooloolah, Montville, Mapleton and Beerburrum have all identified a dog park as a priority for their towns. A group in Mooloolah is working on locating a dog park within the recreation grounds, while residents of Beerburrum have flagged Parrot Park as a possible location for a fenced dog enclosure. Mapleton has been agitating for a dog park since it was identified in council planning back in 2003.

The struggle to have a piece of land saved as a park in Peachester may culminate soon, according to a community campaign organiser Ray Pulham. Ray and a delegation from the A Park for Peachester community group met with the officials from the office of Dr Anthony Lynham, the Minister for Natural Resources, Mines and Energy, to present a 20-page A3 printed compilation of information outlining the long history of the battle to have the High Street site designated as a community park. “We wanted to collate an anthology of the efforts of local people over the past 30 years to see this park become a reality,” Ray said. “It appears that the block of land in question is moving through a process within the state government, with the Department of Mines, Energy and Natural Resources to decide an outcome in August. “We value the incredibly hard work that has been put in by many in our Peachester community over the years to try to establish outdoor recreation facilities of either a park or open space recreation ground for nearly 30 years. “This is the driving force behind our efforts,” Ray said. The final statement of the document says it all: “What more do we have to do to prove that we are a worthy community, that we have been heard and that we are not greedy, needy. Just equal to other communities in QLD. OUR COMMUNITY IS EXHAUSTED!!!” The printed publication is available for viewing at the Peachester café, while an electronic version can be viewed on the group’s Facebook page (A Park for Peachester).

An application for a funeral parlour and function centre on Mountain View Road at Maleny was rejected at last Thursday’s Sunshine Coast Council meeting. In an unusual move, the application was put to the full council rather than being decided by council planning staff. According to the report presented to council, this was “due to the level of public interest”, as the original application received 147 public submissions opposing the proposal. The development included an 8.5m high 150seat chapel and an existing dwelling converted into a 100-seat function facility, as well as a substantial driveway, considerable parking and an upgraded road entrance. Although the application did not comply with council’s planning scheme and the land is zoned for rural purposes, council planning staff recommended it be approved. The staff reported that they could impose enough conditions to override any planning scheme conflicts and resolve any community anguish, noting that “… the proposal would not unduly impact on the amenity of the surrounding sensitive land uses”. However, the elected community representatives thought otherwise and sided with the local community, voting six to four to refuse the application. The motion to refuse was led by Cr Rick

Baberowski, whose division the property falls within. “For me, the matter was triggered by the large number of submissions from nearby residents along Mountain View Road who objected to the application,” Cr Baberowski said. “My role is to represent the views of my constituents and to argue for them as best I can. “Their concerns were about the impacts that would result from any event, funeral or otherwise, in that particular area. “The residents were concerned that it would have a high impact on what was their quiet rural amenity,” Cr Baberowski said. Impacts raised in the submitted objections included a significant increase in traffic along the road and the unknown impacts of other events such as parties, corporate events and weddings, which would be allowed under the application. The development proponents – landowners Michael and Caroline Arnett – said they were extremely disappointed with the outcome of Thursday’s meeting. They felt their application failed to accurately share their vision for a dedicated “life celebration venue” to provide a tranquil, beautiful place for bereaved families and friends to come to reflect on and farewell their loved ones. Caring for the Hinterland community for over 20 yrs

by council Arkansas and Butchart Gardens on Vancouver Island. They viewed dozens of different properties around the coast, however the 13 hectare property on Mountain View Road at Maleny met all their criteria of a lake, a forest, a view and plenty of space for off-road parking. There is no local precedent for their concept and, as it did not fall into a clear planning category, their town planner advised that while it would be primarily classed as a function centre, they were required to lodge an application as a funeral parlour as their intention was to predominantly conduct funeral ceremonies. Caroline said that they were very distressed to read that some of the submissions opposing the business referred to it as “creepy”, “an eyesore”, and “should be built in an industrial estate”. “We can understand their concerns if we were a traditional funeral parlour. However, we are not. We don’t have a crematorium or a burial site, nor do we store the deceased so we are not strictly a funeral parlour,” she said. “Some residents have been understandably concerned about the increase in traffic to Mountain View Road, which our town planner advised is a feeder road classed to handle considerably more traffic than a typical suburban road. “This information was subsequently supported by the traffic management reports that council required. Similarly, their reports confirmed there

would be no negative noise impacts as a result of the proposed activities. “Additionally, unlike the traditional funeral parlours that are designed to turn over funerals every 2-3 hours, we are proposing to host one celebration after 9.30am and/or one in the afternoon concluding before 5.30pm," Caroline said. The couple believed they had identified every potential issue for local residents and obtained all necessary reports as per council’s request to show that the site was suitable for their proposed use. They feel they have been misunderstood and unfairly dismissed because of their unique business model, as there is no specific category to lodge an application at present. Consequently, the couple have said that they will lodge an appeal in the Planning and Environment Court. Community protests and objections over development applications are becoming more frequent, showing that communities are looking to council to more strongly uphold the protections that are built into the planning scheme, especially when developments are proposed in areas where the land is not designated for that use. “The proposal is an inconsistent use with the rural zoning,” Cr Baberowski said. “We do have to carefully consider what signal that sends if we start having inconsistent uses in rural zones that are approved by council.”

Each work station has clear instruction signage on how to use the equipment The sportsground committee is pleased to see people of all ages testing themselves on the six stations that provide a total of 12 different fitness activities. Committee member Helen Weil said there was definitely enough variety to give a full workout in one location, incorporating a sit up bench, sky runner, step up, dip station, chest press, a leg press, fit rider, a rowing machine, skier and a back massager. Each work station has clear instruction signage on how to use the equipment and some include a QR code that you can scan to watch an instructional video as well. “The equipment is located behind the main building at the sportsground not far from the barbeque area. It is free to use and available to all in the community,” Helen said. The project was undertaken with the assistance of

$26,640 funding for the equipment from Get Playing Places and Spaces, a state government grants program, and the sportsground committee provided about $12,000 for the softfall rubber flooring surface.

Dream on with Sailing AB Sea By Sonia Clark Regular readers of GC&M News may recall our stories following the intrepid adventures of grey wet nomads (and former Beerwah residents) Barry and Aannsha Jones who are following their dreams to sail the world. Their adventures were all the more incredible considering that before starting neither of them knew how to sail! Departing Australia in December 2017, Barry and Aannsha headed to Spain and then Gibraltar where they learnt to sail - literally learning the ropes. In July 2018 they finalised the purchase of a 1995 Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 45.1 yacht in Spain, which they renamed A B Sea and the adventures have come thick and fast ever since. Followers of their social media posts and weekly blogs are treated to practical, humorous and often envy-inducing updates. In their first year of sailing Part of the adventure

they have crossed the Mediterranean from west to east. Recent updates have included hilarious travels through Turkey and Greece. Last week the couple were anchored near Pythagoreio on the island Samos in Greece and yes – it looks amazing. Their most recent post places them in Milos one of the Cyclades islands in Greece. The couple’s story has been included in a new book called ‘Dream On’, which highlights the inspiring tales of ten sailors from five continents, all determined to escape the rat race. Aannsha said that she and Barry were thrilled that their personal story was included in the compilation. “It's actually not a book about sailing, it's a great read for everyone. It's filled with tales of courage, fear, naivety and a desire to make dreams come true. It's also the perfect book for anyone considering a lifestyle change and stepping away from their old life,” Aannsha said. The Maleny Independent School first opened its door in 2018. On Tuesday, August 6 the school will put out the welcome mat for visitors interested in finding out more about future enrolments. There will be two information sessions on the day, one in the morning at 9.15am and an afternoon session at 4.15pm. Currently the secondary school has 25 enrolled students in years 7-9. In 2020 this will expand to offer year 10 as well. Memorial bursary winner announced

The winner of the inaugural Joyce Newton OAM Memorial Bursary was recently announced by the Member for Glass House, Andrew Powell. Jessica Perro, a year 12 student from Glasshouse Christian College, was named as the bursary winner at a school Glasshouse Christian College head assembly with her peers and of secondary school David Heyworth family present. and Jessica Perro with Andrew Powell “This is the first year that I’ve MP awarded the bursary in memory of my friend and amazing local community advocate Joyce Newton, who passed away last year after a struggle with motor neurone disease,” Mr Powell said. “Joyce loved civic society – getting involved in our democracy, debating ideas, seeking to better our local community, our state and our nation. As a former teacher, she sought to instil the same love in our future generations. This bursary seeks to keep that interest and legacy alive,” Mr Powell said. Organised in conjunction with Mrs Newton’s family, the bursary includes a $1,000 voucher to Concept IT at Maleny, acknowledgement and tabling of the essay written by Jessica in the Queensland Parliament and dinner for the winner and her family at Queensland Parliament House. “To enter, students needed to submit a 1,000 word essay to my office on the value of the many small businesses and farmers in the seat of Glass House and their importance to the State of Queensland,” Mr Powell said. “Jessica Perro wrote a brilliant essay highlighting the way agriculture has been a way of life and a vital part of the economy in Queensland and especially the Glass House region.” The essay drew attention to exciting new industry leaders such as Hum Honey, Green Valley Agriculture, Chocolate Country and Maleny Black Angus Beef. Jessica wrote about how the strength and innovation of small business and farming in Glass House would ensure a positive future for the immediate and greater community. “It is an honour to award the very first Joyce Newton OAM Memorial Bursary to Jessica Perro, and I look forward to continuing the bursary and supporting local students for many years to come,” Mr Powell said.

Sunshine Coast Walk for Women’s Cancers

Community benefits from business celebration

Cancer Council Queensland is calling on the Sunshine Coast community to unite in pink to create hope for every woman’s future. Registrations have now opened for the annual Walk for Women’s Cancers event being held at Alex Skate Park on September 15 from 8am. The event is a 3km or 6km family-friendly fun walk for participants of all abilities, with funds raised going towards Cancer Council Queensland’s research for life-saving treatments and support programs for women affected by cancer. Cancer Council Queensland CEO Chris McMillan encouraged all Sunshine Coast locals to unite and walk towards a cancer free future this September. “One in six Queensland women will be diagnosed with breast or gynaecological cancers in their lifetime," Ms McMillan said. “Getting involved might only seem like a small way to make an impact but your contribution makes a lasting difference to locals touched by this disease. The Sunshine Coast community can expect an action-packed morning filled with live entertainment, food trucks and more. April 25, 2019 marked the 210th anniversary of the first postal service established in Australia. The service started in Sydney in the colony of NSW under Mr Isaac Nichols. The Lieutenant-Governor of the colony established the official postal arrangements to prevent fraud by individuals who were boarding ships and impersonating the legitimate recipients of letters and parcels. From April 25, 1809, all letters and parcels were to be deposited with the official post office at Circular Quay for distribution. Cobb & Co commemorative When the first penal settlement was established in Moreton Bay in 1824, stamp basic postal arrangements were handled by the military authorities. Up until separation in 1859, Queensland’s postal services were the responsibility of NSW. The first non-military postmaster, Gilbert White, was appointed in 1842. By 1859 there were 15 NSW established post offices within the colony of Queensland. Postage stamps were first issued by the Queensland Government on November 1, 1869. Early mails were carried by pack horse, rail, steam ship and, from 1862, by Cobb & Co coaches. In the Glass House Mountains, when the mail contract was held by Cobb & Co, William Grigor at Bankfoot House was the official postmaster from 1868 until his death in 1907. After the Federation of Australia in 1901 postage stamps became a Commonwealth responsibility from March 1, 1901. Adventist church building update

The Landsborough Seventh-day Adventist Church on Maleny Street, originally built more than 60 years ago, is about to undergo a major renovation and extension over the next few months to update the building and increase its seating capacity. This is stage one of the building program. A second later stage will include the building of a community centre on the vacant land adjoining the church. Church members have been busy raising funds for the building program that will also include some major landscaping. While the construction is taking place, regular church services will be held at the Glasshouse Country Uniting Church, 25 Twin Peaks Drive, Beerwah each Saturday from August 17 with the all-age small group Bible study from 9.30am followed by the 11am worship service. Corporate strategy and finance portfolio councillor Tim Dwyer said the $1,000 prize incentive was a healthy, smart, creative step to encourage ratepayers to receive their rates notices electronically, providing both convenience for the ratepayer and cost reductions for council. “Mid-year rates notices were mailed out last week and it costs council a significant amount of money to print and then mail out rates notices to Sunshine Coast ratepayers using traditional postal services,” Cr Dwyer said. Ratepayers who are currently receiving their rates notices in the post can visit council’s website and sign up to MyCouncil or login to their existing MyCouncil accounts and change the preferred rates notice delivery method from post to email before August 21 to get a chance to win the prize. The Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre computer mentor program has one-on-one and small group mentoring sessions available. The local computer mentor volunteers - Peter, Doug and Ron - offer their time voluntarily to help people who would like to learn the basics of using a computer and how to use some software. Sahara Scolding bay mare aged 32, foaled in September in 1987. This beautiful old mare has given me so much joy over the last 14 years. Although she is not ridden now and is in retirement in my paddock, she has been a successful race horse in her prime and was one of the Sahara horses raced by Mr Jack Gowen at that time. Tax Time Keeping you safe at tax time The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) is warning taxpayers to keep an eye out at this time of year for people posing as tax agents who are not registered with the Tax Practitioners Board (TPB). ATO assistant commissioner Karen Foat is concerned about a number of people claiming to be tax agents, often promising refunds that sound too good to be true, or providing discounted services much cheaper than legitimate registered tax agents. “These unregistered preparers pretend to offer legitimate services to the community but in reality they pose a serious threat not only to the people that use them but to the broader community and the tax system as a whole,” Ms Foat said. “Unfortunately, we see too many instances where people have unwittingly used an unregistered preparer, which has resulted in a significant tax debt

and loss of money. We also see instances where people do not receive their refund or where fraudulent claims are lodged in their name without their knowledge.” Unregistered preparers often use a taxpayer's personal login details to access their ATO online account through myGov to lodge tax returns. A legitimate tax practitioner will never ask for your myGov credentials – they use dedicated ATO online services to lodge returns for their clients. “To protect yourself and keep your personal information safe, it is important to check with the TPB to see if an agent is registered. You can easily check an agent’s registration online at www.tpb.gov.au. Remember, only registered tax agents can charge a fee to prepare and lodge your tax return,” Ms Foat said.

How to nail your return

The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) has revealed some of the most common mistakes people make at tax time. Assistant commissioner Karen Foat said that errors ranged from honest mistakes to people deliberately over claiming to increase their refund. For example, incorrect work-related expense claims have been highlighted as one of the key drivers of the $8.7 billion tax gap generated by individuals not in business. If you want to nail your tax return this tax time, here are the top four mistakes to avoid: 1. Lodging before all your prefill data is available or failing to report all your income “People can lodge now if they have all of the information they need to do their returns accurately,” Ms Foat said. 2. Claiming the wrong thing Work-related expenses is one area where people commonly make mistakes. To help you work out what you can claim, the ATO has developed 30 occupation guides and accompanying posters for specific occupations (www.ato.gov.au/occupations). Remember, when claiming a deduction for work-related expenses follow the three golden rules - you spent the money yourself and have not been reimbursed; the claim must be directly related to earning your income; and you must have a record to prove it. You can only claim the work-related portion of expenses. 3. Forgetting to keep receipts The ATO refuses a large percentage of claims where taxpayers are unable to produce records or receipts when asked. Even if the value of a claim is below the record-keeping threshold, the ATO may ask you to show how you calculated your claim. 4. Claiming for something never paid for Ms Foat said the ATO often saw people making claims at the record-keeping limit thinking that the ATO would never question a claim if a receipt was not required. “But you still need to have spent the money yourself and be able to show us how you’ve worked out your claim," she said. “If you can’t explain it, we won’t accept it, and we may penalise you for failing to take care when lodging your tax return."

Beerwah Kindergarten director Rebecca Macintosh reckons grandparents are a delightful blend of laughter, caring deeds, wonderful stories and love, so it was fitting that the Beerwah Kindy was brimming with joy last week as each of the children played host to their grandparents or a special guest.

Hans and Burnie from the Glass House Ukulele Group brought music and joined in the fun at Kindy on grandparents day “This day is always a highlight on our Kindy calendar and this year each group was joined by over 40 special guests. “It is heartwarming to see grandparents playing side by side with their grandchildren. “There was tinkering at the woodwork table, crowns being made at the collage table, painting, block building, card games, sandcastles in the digging patch and, of course, the highlight of dancing and singing together. “This year we had an added bonus as Hans and Burnie from the Glasshouse Ukulele Group accepted our invitation and came along to join in the fun,” Rebecca said.

Ward off the winter blues

From Cancer Council Queensland CEO Ms Chris McMillan During the colder months, there is a greater tendency to rug up and stay in the warm indoors and eat comfort foods. However, winter also brings an increased chance of illness, so here are some tips to keep away the winter blues. 1. Boost your diet. Fill your plate with plenty of seasonal fruits and vegetables so your body has adequate amounts of nutrition and energy, therefore keeping your immune system strong. Vegetable soups or stews are an easy way to get a large quantity of vitamins, minerals and fibre to keep you strong and healthy throughout the season. 2. Stay hydrated. Unlike summer, dehydration is less noticeable during the colder months. It’s important to ensure you are still drinking plenty of water each day. Even mild dehydration can lead to headaches, fatigue and problems with concentration. If cold water is too much to handle in the cold weather, try mixing it with some boiled water with lemon. 3. Keep exercising. The chilly mornings and evenings can make it easier to rug up and stay indoors but it’s important to maintain regular exercise throughout winter. Make your physical activity social and fun – go for a brisk walk with family or participate in some indoor fitness classes. Regular exercise naturally improves your health and fitness, putting your body in a better position to fight off any potential colds or infections. 4. Sleep well. Studies show that people who don’t get enough sleep are more likely to get sick after being exposed to bacteria or viruses such as the common cold. How much sleep you get also affects how quickly you recover from your

sickness. The average adult needs about eight hours of sleep to fully recharge. Set a regular sleep schedule, avoid caffeinated drinks in the afternoon or evening, limit screen use before bed and ensure your room is a comfortable temperature. Being too cold (or too hot) can affect your brain’s ability to switch off. 5. Consider hygiene and be careful around people. Wash your hands often, especially before you eat and before you touch your eyes, nose or mouth. Carrying an alcohol-based hand sanitiser in your bag can assist with cleaning your hands when you are in a public place. Don’t share the same glass, utensils or towels with others and be careful near anyone who has a fever, cold or flu. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is also important for those living with cancer as it can assist during and after treatment, and help with your mental and physical wellbeing. Composting - increases energy, improves emotional wellbeing, increases confidence, gives purpose and something to do, positive outcome, enhances problem solving skills and improves positive habits.

• It’s a good time to fertilise and prune hibiscus so they develop a bushy habit and produce lots of flowers in summer. • If you have a vege garden, don’t forget to water it once or twice a week. Sport Witta Tennis Contributed by Pauline Fraley A warm, sunny winter’s day at Eumundi against the Miss Gems was an enjoyable day of tennis for all but Witta Wagtails who succumbed to the skill of Eumundi Miss Gems. Thanks to Gerry Gabriel, Cynthia Garvie, Suzie Billett and Sonia Douglas. Whistlers played at Witta against Mooloolaba Legends. Nice weather for tennis and we all enjoyed the day. We didn't get the win but we had great tennis and it was a good day. Score was 25-44 games 2-6 sets. Team was Donna Kuskopf, Brenda Warner, Aki Lepper and thanks Carol Sadler for filling in. The Wildcats travelled to Mooloolaba to compete against newcomers to this division the Martinis. It was beautiful tennis weather and Pauline Fraley, Annie Stewart, Stacey English and Sonia Douglas enjoyed their tennis with a good win. The score was 7-1 sets; 46-22 games. Sunday, July 8 was the Mary Valley Come and Play Tennis Day, which was a very successful day at the Witta tennis courts bringing players from various clubs around the hinterland together in an afternoon of social/competitive tennis. Players from Mapleton, Kandanga, Landsborough, Witta and Caloundra were represented in a round robin

competition that partnered players from different districts into two divisions to play out for some great prizes. Assisting on the barbeque was participation leader for the Sunshine Coast, Nick Todorov, who not only perfected the beef patties but also presented the trophies to the respective winners and runners up. Division A winners were Paula Cudmore (Witta) and Tanya Downing (Kandanga) and the runners up were Steve Banney (Kandanga) and Pauline Fraley (Witta). Division B winners were Mark Hamilton (Mapleton) and Gerry Gabriel (Witta) and runners up were Bevin Smith (Landsborough) and Sonia Douglas (Witta). Most aces went to Gerry Gabriel, oldest player was Arthur Gabriel, most enthusiastic participant was Karen Gurney and the serving competition winner was Steve Banney. A huge thanks to all participants for such a great afternoon of some very close tennis matches as well as camaraderie around a wholesome lunch enjoyed in a jovial spirit. Maleny Bowls Club Contributed by Graeme Glover Monday monthly pairs saw a great turnout of visitors. Congratulations to Bill Edwards and his Kilcoy team on their win. Runners up were Mapleton with some good second game form. Thanks to all who travelled to be a part of a great day of bowls. Wednesday night saw some close games with the Outlaws having a big win to farewell Christine for a few weeks travelling. This Sunday, August 4 is the Police Annual Bowls day Iona Farm Challenge sponsored by Terry and Liz Little. Put your name down at the club as players are needed. Lessons for Beginners to Advanced

The Range Croquet Club Contributed by Ken Barker Kath Smith, Wallace Roy and Sally Adams played a friendly game of association on lawn two on Thursday. At the same time on lawn one, the final game of the club open championship was being played by Ken Barker and Donna Manning. All previous games in this competition were tight and this was no exception. Either player could have won. Ken was the eventual winner of it and the tournament. On Friday we had a visit from the Caloundra group. It is always a pleasure to get out on the lawn with this group for some very competitive games of golf croquet. Sarah Widin and Kath fought an intriguing final to the third division championship on Saturday with Sarah winning the first game, then Kath coming back strongly in the second only to lose by a whisker. Donna played in the Queensland Women’s open championship and finished runner up in her group. On Sunday Wallace, Ken and Vince Carbery played a very ragged game of association with no clear winner becoming apparent. It was good fun with both Vince and Wallace showing good form. Congratulations to Yuni Rowell from Burleigh Heads Palm Beach who was the tournament winner and thanks to Windsor club for hosting the event. Coaching for beginners and others is available on the picturesque lawns at the bottom of the Maleny Showgrounds from 8-10am on Saturdays. These are popular sessions in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere.
