Hi Everyone... In this edition we have included three pages capturing "just some of the good times" that our locals enjoyed on Australia Day. We started out early at the Maleny Showgrounds in time to grab some photos of lots of hungry locals tucking into a great ‘big Aussie breakfast’ put on by Maleny Apex, before heading over to the Citizenship Ceremony held at the TS Centaur Headquarters (which is always my favourite part of the day). It’s really heart-warming being around people who are making this important commitment and seeing how excited / pleased and proud they are! We then spent some time checking out the activities and demonstrations of the Expo out on the oval. We then headed down to Glass House to see all of the action of the Sports Club, and this year proved to be the best yet for the Show and Shine with over 230 cars and bikes turning up. Unfortunately, we missed out on seeing Andrew Powell MP and Councillor Rick Baberowski compete in a pie eating competition, but we were able to capture some of the pineapple activities. You can check out our day on pages 25 to 27.

I am, you are, we are Australians While the group of new citizens from both the Glasshouse Country and Maleny areas only numbered 10 at the Citizenship Ceremony held on Australia Day at the Maleny Showgrounds, they were given a very warm community reception. The TS Centaur Naval Cadets started the ceremony by raising the flag and doing a traditional Colours Ceremony, while three lovely horses and their riders from the 5th Light Horse Regiment Maleny Troop watched over the proceedings. The official component of the ceremony was performed by the Federal Member, Andrew Wallace, who welcomed the new citizens, with about half being from the UK, as well as Holland, Spain, and Thailand. The Maleny Singers were also on hand to lead the crowd in the National Anthem, both verses, which appeared to be a challenge for not just the

Kev was recommended to us by other local trade businesses who had done work at our house, so that was a good local endorsement for him. Recognising the locals who are giving back Individuals and businesses who contribute to the local community will be recognised in a new award scheme launched by Federal Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace. Mr Wallace has called for public nominations for the Fisher Community Awards, which will recognise people and organisations who have made a difference in the fields of education, employment and retirement. Mr Wallace said: “We all know those local people who are giving something back – the leaders in our community who inspire us and who set the example for all of us to follow. We have them in our schools, in our businesses and community groups, in our health care providers and our aged care residences. “I want our part of the Sunshine Coast to be the place to be for Education, Employment and Retirement. That is why I have set up the Fisher Community Awards. Skin needling is a procedure that uses multiple needles to pierce the skin to create tiny injuries deep into the skin. These dermal injuries lead to new collagen formation via the normal skin repair mechanisms. Skin needling also perforates and softens fibrous scar tissue enabling the deposition of new collagen. This new collagen fills depressed scars and wrinkles from the bottom layers up, lifting the depression so they level out with the surrounding skin. This process takes 2-3 months to produce visible results. How long does it take? The treatment itself only takes about 15-20 minutes but we allow 45 minutes total which includes a thorough consultation and some pampering too. 3-6 treatments can be done over a 3 to 12 week period depending on the individual. Does needling hurt? No, we use numbing cream prior to your treatment. What can needling treat? Conditions including: scarring (must be 6 months old or longer); acne scarring (post acne); wrinkles and lines; sun damaged skin; dull, sallow skin; and premature aged skin. What can I expect after my treatment? The skin can feel warm and tender once the numbing cream has worn off and non-active products must be worn for the first week (no glycolic acids, retinols, etc). Most clients will experience redness that may last for up to 24-48 hours. Mineral makeup can be applied. It’s important to protect the skin with a minimum 30+ sunscreen too. Some skins will peel and be itchy, which is a normal reaction. Skin hygiene is a must whilst the skin is healing. You must not touch the skin with unwashed hands, and avoid dirty makeup brushes, etc.

A shared vision for Landsborough Every resident, business owner and community group in Landsborough is invited to share their vision for the town’s future with Sunshine Coast Council, as council’s Landsborough Place Making project gets underway. It’s a one-in-20-year opportunity for each individual to help define their town’s future. Council’s first round of community engagement will start at the end of this week, with the entire Landsborough community invited to have its say at visioning events on Saturday February 3 and Sunday February 4. Division 1 Councillor Rick Baberowski said this was a most exciting opportunity for people to help shape and define the direction of this great country town. “Everyone is invited to have their say and I encourage each person to nudge their family members and neighbours to come along to these events – if you ever thought ‘I reckon they should do this’ or ‘I would love to see that done to the town’, now is your chance,” Cr Baberowski said. Stephen Clark, owner of Henry & Co in Landsborough, is keen to encourage other local business owners to make sure they get a good understanding of the process and take the opportunity to become involved. “From a lifestyle perspective this project will be a positive for our local community and will make Landsborough an even better place to live,” Stephen said.

Attention Flexilink users It’s time for Peachester and Beerwah to flex your survey muscles and provide feedback to Sunshine Coast Council about the Hinterland Flexilink service in the area. Residents are now invited to provide feedback to help council determine if the Peachester to Beerwah service can be improved. Transport Strategy Portfolio Councillor Rick Baberowski said the trial operated around 24 prebooked trips per month between Peachester and Beerwah last year.

"It’s important to check in with the community on how the service is going,” Cr Baberowski said. The survey can be downloaded or completed online. Find all the details on council’s Have Your Say website at haveyoursay.sunshinecoast.qld. gov.au. The survey will close 4pm on February 9. All completed entries received by that time will go into the draw for a chance to win a $100 Visa gift card.

RangeCare is calling for volunteer drivers Every day, a network of community-minded locals is providing an invaluable service to people along the Blackall Range. RangeCare’s volunteer drivers support the elderly and younger people with a disability by helping them get to and from medical appointments. This essential, door-to-door service meets a growing need in our community as more and more people need this personal service. RangeCare’s CEO Jenny McCafferty said that feedback from many of RangeCare’s volunteer drivers suggests that the drivers get just as much out of the experience as the clients. “Our volunteer drivers are frequently giving us feedback about the interesting conversations that they have while travelling with our clients, as well as the new friendships they make," she said. “It’s a win-win!” RangeCare’s volunteer drivers are fully reimbursed for

Since late last year Jodie Bannister from Kwerky Café has been trialling a range of drinking straws that provide a longer-term alternative to the single use plastic straws to work out what would best suit the café’s needs. While the initial cost of purchasing the stainless steel straws was a factor in making the purchase, knowing that they are doing the right thing by the environment means she is happy for the additional cost. “I have had great feedback from customers who say that the straws are nicer to drink out off than the plastic alternative, and while some people have raised concerns about hygiene, I have explained that before they are washed in the dishwasher with extremely hot water they are cleaned out thoroughly with the appropriately sized bottle brush (as seen in photo),” Jodie said. Have you heard about Koala Joeys? It’s a free, fun interactive program held at the Glass House Moun-tains State School that assists parents to be confident that their child will easily transition into school. The program helps parents develop an understanding of early literacy, numeracy, emotional and social skills, gross and fine motor development and the importance of play for learning in the early years. The program is suitable for children aged from birth to pre-prep. As parents are actively involved in the activities in the program requiring them to be quite hands on, the activities work best when parents attend with one child. The weekly sessions this year will start on February 8 and will include storytelling, specially selected songs, rhymes and dances. The program operates during term time, each Thursday morning from 8.45am-9.45am with a short tea or coffee to follow. Participants meet at the school hall any time after 8.30am for an 8.45am start, and don’t forget to bring along a cushion and any snacks and drinks your child needs. The program is open to all local parents, regardless of whether or not they plan to send their child to Glass House Mountains State School in the future. Currently there are even a number of parents coming from outside the area to attend both Joeys and the Coonowrin Kids Playgroup that also runs on at the school on Wednesday mornings from 9am-11am (more details on page 21). The community and interested parties are being asked to have their say on how to improve the welfare standards for the Australian poultry industry. The draft Australian Animal Welfare Standards and Guidelines for Poultry – and the associated Regulation Impact Statement (RIS) – mark a significant step forward in poultry welfare in Australia, moving from the existing voluntary system to national regulation. Kathleen Plowman, Animal Health Australia CEO, said public consultation provides an important opportunity for the community and stakeholders to comment on the draft welfare standards, and on how the associated RIS identifies the key costs and benefits for poultry producers, governments and the wider community. “Once finalised, the Australian Animal Welfare Standards and Guidelines for Poultry will provide the basis for new regulation to enhance poultry welfare in all Australian states and territories, so we urge producers and the wider community to provide input on the draft document,” said Ms Plowman. “This public consultation is the next important step in the document’s development, which will help ensure all views on welfare standards are considered and that a robust document is delivered to Australia’s agricultural ministers for their noting or endorsement.” The public consultation period ends at 5pm on Monday February 26, after which submissions will be reviewed by an independent consultant and revised welfare standards developed for consideration by the Stakeholder Advisory Group. Quick guide to cyber bullying By Queensland Police Officer, Sergeant Yvette Tarrier Back to school brings up a timely reminder for parents to familiarise themselves with their children’s online behaviours. So let’s have a quick refresher on cyber bullying and what parents can do. The ThinkUKnow website is a great starting point. Cyberbullying is the use of information and communication technologies to support deliberate, repeated and hostile behaviour. This kind of bullying can cause great distress and impact on a child’s self-esteem and confidence. Young people may feel that there is no safe place to hide from it. Cyber bullying activities may include: • Posting defamatory messages on social networking sites; • Spreading rumours online; • Excluding a young person from an online group; and • Sending unwanted messages, either by text, instant messaging or email. Some tips for parents if your child is being bullied: • Talk to your children about cyber bullying and conflict they may have experienced. Increasing awareness about cyber bullying helps children understand the positive and negative impacts of being online. • Help build resilience to deal with nasty one-off comments.

• Be aware of what your child is doing online. It is like supervising children in public spaces – being a responsible parent means teaching them appropriate behaviours. • Share online activities with your children. This helps keeps the lines of communication open so your child can talk to you if something is worrying them. • Place the computer in a shared or visible place in the home. • Keep evidence of bullying behaviour such as instant messenger conversations or online posts. Contributed by Carol Weeks The Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network (GMAN) recently gathered to celebrate the lives of Maree Rau and Peter Kluver who were both longterm and active members of our group. Maree was involved in our Native Plant propagation and potting group, and Committee Secretary for several years until mid-2017. Peter involved himself in physical and mechanical projects and was still serving as Vice-President at the time of his passing. Both Peter and Maree were instrumental in the establishment of GMAN’s first koala food tree plantation in 2014, so it was fitting that we gathered at this lovely Hinterland location. Several of Peter’s family were present, including his wife Dianne. Stories of these two friends were

Ian Ferguson, a retired business owner, has found his niche in natural landscapes interpreted through the medium of black and white photography. His main subjects include landscape, still life and portraiture. He has a Visual Arts Certificate from Nambour TAFE, and he prints and frames all his images himself. Annette Pendlebury has taken a different approach and digitally manipulates her photos to create surreal works of art. She discovered the world of photography 12 years ago. She said that

she had “found this to be an incredibly creative journey which has allowed me to realise and release a latent talent”. Initially her photography leaned toward the landscape/seascape genre, however, over the last few years her direction has changed and taken on a more digitally creative flow. She is currently immersed in the creation of artistic composites and Fractal Art. Her tools of trade are Photoshop and Ultra Fractal. Meanwhile, Ilia Starkovsky a professional photographer, explores the aesthetics of nature and flowers printed on canvas. Ilia was born in Tientsin, China, of Russian parents, and immigrated to Australia at the age of seven. After completing his formal studies in Photography at RMIT, Ilia spent 25 years running his own commercial photo studio near Zurich in Switzerland.

When he returned to Australia, Ilia settled on the Sunshine Coast and continued professional photography as ‘Beerwah Photographics’, specialising in commercial, technical, advertising, and art photography. Ilia has been a judge at various photo competitions, and he tutors photography at U3A. Ilia says: “Nature, especially flora has always held a special fascination for me. I’ve decided to print on canvas, not to imitate an artist’s painting, but to use the canvas surface as a structural element for this modern inkjet medium." ‘Through Our Eyes’ will be on display at Vianta Arts, 70 Simpson Street, Beerwah from January 28 to February 25, with the opening at 6.30pm on Friday February 2. MPs need to hear constituents’ voices

The reactions of political leaders to suggestions of law reform in the area of voluntary euthanasia show how important it is for Queenslanders to voice their views to their local MPs. Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has not ruled out examining reforms - just not right now - and Opposition Leader Deb Frecklington has expressed her personal position - not her party’s position against change. If law reforms are to occur they will happen after a conscience vote by our individual 93 state MPs and not by a vote on party lines. This is a matter of widespread community concern and interest needing the deepest consideration and decision by all 93 MPs in our parliament regardless of party label. The starting point must be a public inquiry by our State Parliament to canvass all views and expert evidence. An inquiry would accommodate the Premier’s desire to first see Victoria’s new laws at work, as those laws would naturally be examined in detail by any inquiry. While good palliative care can work for most people, there will always be others it cannot help. They should have the choice of a good death, and not experience a bad death with intolerable suffering and pain. We should not continue to force people to take things into their own hands because of a lack of law reform that would give them a lawful and dignified death in a strictly regulated environment. The former Lord Mayor of Brisbane, the late Clem Jones, took this view and wanted everyone to have the choice of a good death, which is why the Clem Jones Group is backing moves for change beginning with a parliamentary inquiry. We have seen law reforms in Victoria and the WA Parliament is holding an inquiry. So why not the Queensland Parliament where the issue has never really been debated at all? It needs to happen, but it will only happen if Queenslanders tell their MPs they want it to happen. David Muir Chair Clem Jones Trust

For many years Queensland people and now most recently, the Police Union, have been up in arms at unmarked speed cameras, saying they are just revenue raisers. Are they though? Why not just introduce hundreds of marked speed cameras without the actual camera inside? Could a dummy camera be made? Would it guarantee that people would still slow down?

Or, just forget all that, and raise the monetary fines, like $220 and 1 point for being 5-15 km/h above the speed limit. Surprise, surprise!

Another two applications for medium density developments have been lodged with Council (MCU17/2161 and MCU17/2164) both of which are in Division 1 and exceed the town planning scheme approved density of 30-50 dwellings/ hectare… how does the equivalent of 65 dwellings/hectare sound! This is more than double the minimum approved density. Why lodge applications in excess of the designated planned density? The answer is simple, greed on behalf of the developer, the consultant convincing the developer that they can have the higher density application approved (thus squeezing the maximum dollars from the area) and lastly, possible precedents where approval has been granted by Council for earlier applications. One applicant argues that the latter is not a problem as “similar rationale has been applied on developments in the Sunshine Coast”. This statement supports the inference that Council has previously approved similar applications (maybe a precedent) and could also be construed as a veiled threat by the planning consultant who is representing the developer. The other application attempts to justify the excess density equivalent of 59 dwellings/hectare by stating Council should give consideration to “the location of the development in terms of access and proximity to all urban services”. What this has to do with proposed dwelling density beats me! Developers and their consultants are treating the town planning residential density regulations as a joke and if Council has created a precedent then this only complicates the problem.

It is time concerned residents of Beerwah (and other areas) expressed their objections to actions (such as above) so that Council is made aware that their constituents are fed up with proposals by developers and their associates to ‘milk’ the system and apply unwarranted pressure on Council decision making. This can be achieved by lodging objections with the mayor, your local councillor, and the manager of SCC Town Planning. Expressing your displeasure to your local newspaper also helps! As a resident we must attempt to protect our community from overdevelopment by (in many cases) unscrupulous people/businesses, interested only in their own financial gain. If you have a computer, email lodgement of an objection is quick and easy, simply email the below (if you don’t, a written note is quite acceptable). I (name) of (address) lodge my objection to any Residential Development Application submitted to the Sunshine Coast Council where such Application exceeds the planned residential density to that detailed in the current SEQ Regional Plan 2017 and / or any relevant town planning scheme. Council approval for such applications should be denied. School News School welcomes new students and families

Contributed by Michelle Lenz The first day of school last week at Mooloolah State School saw many excited new Prep New prep student Gage students roll into school as well as many and his Mum nervous mums. There were mixed emotions in the Prep rooms, but it wasn’t long before all the anxiousness disappeared as they settled in with their new teachers Mrs Innis and Mrs Sugden. There were also many happy faces, with the older students keen to get to their new class and meet their teachers and friends. The School’s P&C and Chappy Mark continued the tradition of hosting a coffee, cake / meet and greet morning at the front of the school. This is done so parents can feel relaxed, have a chat, ask questions and make new connections within the school.

Contributed by Deputy Principal Tanya Hayden Year 7 students have had a great start at Beerwah SHS with a focus on staff and students getting to know each other, building positive relationships and setting the tone for meeting expectations for 2018. Students had to work together in teams where they learned about grit and the power of perseverance, setting goals for academic and personal success and looking at how we have to ‘feed’ our three brains – the Wild, the Emotional and the Smart brain – in order to have balance and self-regulate our own behaviours. The first week culminated in a ‘Day of Awesome’ - a great start to the year for the Year 7 students.

Contributed by Sandy Johnson You would think that going to big school for the first time would cause a few bottom lips to wobble but there was nothing but laughter and smiles from the 2018 batch of Prep students at Glasshouse Christian College. Before the doors even opened, the students were happily chatting with friends, posing for photos and expectantly peering in through the windows. Even the parents bravely held it together until it was time to leave their children to their activities and attend the annual Tim Tam and Tissues event outside the school library. This is where the parents can let their true emotions show. There are tissues to mop up the tears and Tim Tams because chocolate biscuits always make the world feel a better place! There are plenty of activities set up for the children’s arrival which is followed by the traditional group tour of the campus, a visit to the library, and then they are shown specialist classrooms where they will learn Music, French and Sport. There was time to check out the huge playground and the kitchen garden where they will have weekly lessons on growing, cooking and eating their own food. The playgroup runs on Wednesday mornings from 9am-11am at the Glass House Mountains State School during the school term and is run by early childhood trained staff. Coonowrin Kids Playgroup includes music awareness, as well as language and literacy development and offers outside play incorporating gross motor skills. Annual membership is $30 and weekly attendance is $3 and you will need to bring your own snack and drink for your child. Tea and coffee are provided and a coffee van visits as well. Topics covered included Bullying, Art in the Classroom, In Safe Hands, Guided Meditation and Imagery, Yoga, Conflict Resolution using Restorative Dialogue, Goal Setting and Creating a Cooperative, Caring Classroom Culture. The River School is a Primary School and Early Childhood Centre located in a beautiful rainforest setting five minutes from Maleny township. It embraces Neohumanist Education with love and respect at its core. Through meditation and yoga, children learn to experience peace and connectedness; through play-based and excellent academic education they learn how to use their gifts to make a difference; and through the arts they learn how to express their creativity with joy. The school models sustainability by reducing, reusing and recycling in all areas of school life: from organic gardening, composting and mulching, rainwater collection and solar panels, to personal and social sustainability through enhancing inner peace, teaching moral values and training in relationship-building, leadership and service-oriented programs. New year, new opportunities at Glass House Mountains Early Education Centre 2018 is already off to a flying start for Glass House Mountains Early Education Centre with Centre Co-ordinator Ange Hardey enjoying meeting new families and welcoming back old families. Early education professional Nikki Lackey has now settled into her role as the new Lead Educator in the Senior Kindy room and brings an incredible wealth of knowledge to her position. The kids are already experiencing the benefits of her 30+ years of childcare experience and her passion for teaching and education is joyfully apparent. “For this gorgeous three to four-year old age group we really try to incorporate more activities that focus on developing the children’s independence," says Nikki. "We also introduce more structure in their play and activities and find that the children respond really well. Most of all we have heaps of fun!" She has also been busy planning activities that have sensory and messy creative play focus which is super popular with the children. Fantastic for developing a wide range of skills, this type of play allows them to have fun while explore new experiences. STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) activities are also a key focus for this age group.

“The kids get really engaged in these activities. I really try to make the room as fun as possible as we know that the more engaged and interested the children are – the more they want to learn,” says Nikki. The popular Hey-Dee-Ho music program has also commenced for the year and is a great example of some of the additional value-added programs provided at no additional cost. This music-based experience program is run fortnightly and encourages participation. This term the children are focussing on learning simple songs accompanied by sign language. Continuity of care giver and familiarity of staff members for young children is very important, and at Glass House Mountains Early Education Centre most of the staff members have been there for years! One very familiar face for the children is long term assistant educator Wendy Dwyer who has been with the Centre for over seven years. With a Certificate III in Child Care, Wendy helps out in all the rooms catering for children from nursery age through to the older ‘schoolies’ in before and after school care – however, she is best known as the friendly face of the Centre's bus service. The Centre bus operates a daily school run and a home pickup service. For working parents, children can be dropped off at the Centre from 6.30am and Wendy will organise the school run drop off to Glass House, Beerburrum and Beerwah as well as to Glasshouse Christian College.

Following the school run, Wendy then does the ‘home pickup’ run for younger children attending the Centre. The same service runs in the afternoons with Wendy driving to the local schools to pick up the children requiring after school care and dropping off the younger children at home. The best thing is that there is no additional charge for this service. Generally, the service operates approximately to a 10 km radius though if there is a family outside of that area that requires assistance Wendy and the team will do whatever they can to try and accommodate that family's need. “The bus service at the Centre has developed over the last few years from an occasional use to a bustling daily pickup and drop off service that has provided vital assistance to busy families,” explains Wendy. Health &Wellbeing There’s a new New Year’s resolution in town For those whose New Year’s resolutions are already falling by the wayside, a researcher from the University of the Sunshine Coast suggests a shift in focus could help. Positive psychology PhD researcher and professional coach Paula Loveday has found that personal happiness has more to do with the happiness of loved ones than ticking off personal achievements. “My research has really highlighted the importance of relationships and our connection with others, more so than money or success,” she said. “When we have good relationships we have a sense of achievement, like our lives are working out well; a sense of relatedness which is the enjoyment of being with others; and a sense of altruism in that we can support others. “But the thing that was particularly surprising was that imagining a bright future for loved ones was part of how people imagined their own happiness.” As part of her PhD thesis, Ms Loveday asked 141

people to write how they envisaged their “best possible future”, and measured their perceived levels of happiness before and after the exercise. “Not everyone mentioned health or money or success, but every single person wrote something to do with others, and it was this act of picturing their loved ones in happy situations that allowed them to express closeness, compassion and hope for others,” she said. “Some wrote about their children, spouses, friends or even their work colleagues. “The people that we care about bring contentment, purpose and meaningfulness to our lives. “If you want to have a feeling of achievement and satisfaction, then it is probably very useful to set achievement-based goals. But if you are looking for a feeling of peace and contentment, then you should make relationships the focus. That is the thing that matters the most to people and all the other things feed into it. “But it is also a harder goal to pin down. It’s much easier to say I’m going to run five

In the Garden Jobs for the yard in February

• Citrus trees are heavy feeders and need fertilising now. Use a specific citrus fertiliser and apply at the rate on the bag. • Fertilise your Camellia sasanqua bushes as the buds appear. Use a special camellia and azalea fertiliser to maintain slightly acidic soil. • Remove the spent flowering stems of agapanthus. You can collect the seed and grow them yourself if you wish. • Prepare bulb beds and beds for spring-flowering annuals with deep digging, addition of organic matter and mulching. Start looking in books or on the internet for different spring flowering bulbs you might like to order this month and plant in autumn. • Once the sweet corn has finished, start to prepare it for peas and snow pea crops, by digging in some garden lime to raise the pH level in preparation for March/April planting. Chop up the old sweet corn plants and dig them back into the garden as organic matter. A mower with a catcher does a good job of this if you don’t have a mulcher. • Take softwood cuttings of geraniums and pelargonium so that you can strike them and create new plants. • Sow broccoli and cabbage seeds now and raise them for planting in March and April. • Start a winter vegetable garden bed from scratch by layering sugarcane mulch, mushroom compost and manure to a depth of 70cm. Keep moist and allow it all to decompose. By March it will be a luscious organic soil ready for planting. Vegetables Plant eggplant, capsicum, radish, cucumber, lettuce, sweet corn, beetroot, zucchini, leek, silver beet, parsnip, potato, rhubarb, turnip, choko, pumpkin, snake beans, carrot, celery, melons, spring onion, squash and sweet potato. Flowers Plant zinnia, marigold, linaria, vinca, alyssum, cosmos, petunia, portulaca, salvia, polyanthus, primula, cleome, wallflower, begonia, lobelia, nigella, viola, celosia, gomphrena, nasturtium, pansy, Iceland poppy, verbena, calendula, snapdragon, cornflower, chrysanthemum, cockscomb and coleus.

I like to think of the choices we make as part of the culture we set around our lives. Culture is the lifestyle that we set and the values we live our lives by. Being on time, paying bills on time, giving time to family and friends, helping others, setting goals. The list goes on and is different for each of us. As Christians part of culture is being committed to God that comes about by accepting Jesus as Lord and Saviour. We choose culture but along with culture comes the challenges of life, challenges which we do not choose but we still have to face each year. Challenges can come by a sickness, an accident, loss of employment, loss of a loved one and this list goes on. David wrote Psalm 23: "The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me to

The Blackall Range Woodcrafters Guild are a community woodworking club that caters for all levels of woodworkers to join and learn new and develop existing skills amongst like-minded people. Scottish Country Dancing The Maleny Scottish Country Dance Group will recommence for 2018 on Monday February 12. This is a social dance group which meets in the Presbyterian Church Hall, Cedar Street, Maleny from 7pm to 9pm. The dances are performed in sets of six or eight so there is no need to bring a partner, just soft shoes and a smile! A qualified teacher and experienced dancers will help you on your way. This type of dancing provides great physical exercise, mental stimulation and social interaction – all things recommended by the health experts to keep us healthy. The Range Croquet Club Contributed by Ken Barker A group from Caloundra who visits about once a month came and played on Friday and enjoyed the company of our members, having a cup of tea and playing some golf croquet. Ken Barker and Frances Harper played a short game on Sunday afternoon; in this variation all clips start at hoop five and lifts matter. Frances played well to beat Ken 16-10, at one stage making a three hoop two ball break. Well done. Kath Hayes from Yeppoon club and Helen Andrews paired up played well to defeat club president Vince Carbery in a handicap game 18-9. After these two results, perhaps the Lochwood Pennants team has moved from looking strong to looking a little vulnerable. Pennants are played about once a fortnight through almost half the year in the benign months, April to October, depending on the number of teams entered. Clubs from the Sunshine Coast choose two, three, or four players to represent the club in a fixture. A large pool of possible players improves your club’s chances of winning, though one year Vince and Val Carbery were the only two from our club to play in the Lochwood and they won it – a very creditable performance. More players are still needed for the Bray which is for players with a handicap between 10 and 18. Club play days are Thursday and Sunday at 2 for 2.30pm and Saturday mornings at 8am there are lessons for beginners on the courts in the showgrounds. Maleny Bowls Club Contributed by Miles Allen Wednesday night was a beautiful cool evening and all those present took the opportunity to play under floodlights after enjoying a delicious burger with the trimmings. In the last warmup before the competition, the winners were Sunstone (who easily beat the Handles), Mobile Kingdom, Ben Bryce and the Tutors (who are on a winning streak). In the battle for the Cup (sponsored by Royal Doulton) the Musketeers finally beat the Amigos after three thrilling games. Congratulations to Dave Edwards, Steve Ellet and Gary Darcy. Although missing out on the prestigious Cup and a toucher’s prize, Jimmy Davidson went home rich after winning the money board. Tony Yorkston won the singles game after overcoming some stiff competition and a very hot barbeque plate. The competition for Wednesday Night Social Bowls starts this week at 6.00 for 6.30pm. New players are always welcome so come along and we guarantee you a game. Friday afternoon: Round 1 of the Scroungers Competition got underway, 20 players started the season with a new handicapping system and a change to the rules. The intention is to give everyone an equal chance of winning the coveted prizes each week and ultimately the competition. Beerwah Golf Club Ladies results Contributed by Brenda Briese The warm weather is certainly with us now and we are badly in need of some "wet relief" but I guess it will come. Unfortunately that means some smaller fields. Thursday January 25 was a Par competition in one division, (I was on the injured list!). Anyway, 46 ladies braved the heat. Winner was Sue Williamson +2, runner up was Lea Doyle +1 OCB, and 2nd runner up was Hope Hannah+1. Not only did Hope have a great round but she had a ‘Hole in One’ on the 5th. Congratulations!! NTP: 2 Lea Garner, 5 - Hope Hannah (in the hole),16 and (2nd shot 18) Sue Williamson. BRD went to -3. Here's hoping for a cool damp change soon. Hope Hannah, Sue Williamson and Lea Doyle Men and medley results Contributed by Roger Bonhomme Playing partners Geoff Williamson (hcp 3) and Col Penney (7) shared the winning honours in Wednesday's medley Stableford event with 38 points apiece. The countback gave the win to Geoff. In B grade Ken Sharpe (19) won with 39, beating Nick Davies (15) from Pelican Waters by three points. Nick had to use the countback to beat Jeff Butler, Rob Eccles and Stu Meredith for second place. Man of the day was Mick Robins who streeted the field to win C grade with a stunning 45 points. He was running away from Ralph Draper (21) who finished second on 40. Interestingly Mick had to beat 72 other C graders to win. A grade had 26 starters and B grade 31, so maybe we should be looking at forming a D grade at some stage. NTP: 2 – Charlie Bevan, 5 – Brian Wright, 16 – Moss Thistlewaite, 18 – Colin Bates. Scotty Yeates (12) took out Saturday's Stableford A grade event with 39 points. He led home former club champion Sean Daines (scr) by a point. In B grade, Tony Del Forno (16) earned 41 points to beat our senior pennant captain Richard Hatfield (15) on 38. Ron Turner also had 38 but dropped to third place on a countback. In C grade Steve Robertson (27) won with another 41 from Bryan Orr (30) on 39 points. The A and B grade fields improved from Wednesday's total with 50 and 56 starters respectively. C grade had 71 players. NTP: 2 – Shane Eastell, 5 – Geoff Williamson, 16 – Allan Warry, 18 – Phil Sell.
