While the Maleny Music Festival is now in its sixth year, this is the first time the whole of Maleny’s artistic community has come together to create what will be nothing short of an Arts Spectacular during the three day event from Friday

to Sunday in Maleny. While I have put a story together on page 3 about the event, I was barely able to cover more than small snippets of highlights and, boy, is there a lot planned. I reckon the best plan for the weekend would be to head to Maleny early and find a café to get your day started, as you are going to need to build up your energy and strength if you want to check out everything that is going on! Local News Art Street Maleny By Lea Parkes This weekend, Friday to Sunday, September 1 3, will see an explosion of colour and creativity in Maleny as part of the Sunshine Coast's Horizon Festival. Art Street Maleny Coordinator Karen Shaw said locals and visitors will be able follow the trail of arts events linking all the excitement of the Maleny Music Festival being held all weekend at the showgrounds to vibrant art and cultural experiences throughout the streets and parks of Maleny. “Artists Kaye Leach and Belinda Stanton (who are on the front cover) have been running workshops in the lead up of the event to create the beautiful ceramic flowers you will see as part of the ‘Maleny in Bloom’ installation. This colourful exhibit symbolises the vibrancy of the Maleny people as part of Art Street Maleny,” Karen said. There is so much happening. Maleny Art Direct will have an exhibition of Lindsey Muir’s work and the Maleny Printmakers exhibition ‘Collectables’ will be on show at the Forest Heart Collective.

A piece from the ‘Rust & Lace’ exhibition For the adults there are workshops in journaling, macramé and bead making, mosaics, and traditional Maori basket weaving, and for the kids the fun includes slam poetry and clowning workshops. Also, just out of town, there will be a performance by the Tapestry Choir at Mary Cairncross Reserve and Art on Cairncross will host the ‘Rust & Lace’ exhibition. The entertainment isn’t just during the day. If you are looking to kick off the weekend with a bit of a knees up on Friday night, September 1, head along with the whole family to the Bush Dance, with the lively Irish band the Barleyshakes, which is being held at the Maleny Community Centre from 6.30pm - 9.30pm. If you have Maleny Music Festival tickets it is free, or it is $10 a head and $25 for a family. On Saturday night you can also see a showing of Babette’s Feast by the Maleny Film Society. Watch out... the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) will be closing on and off ramps on the Palmview to Sippy Downs section of the Bruce Highway while the upgrade works are being undertaken. TMR advises that temporary ramp closures will be in place at night from late August until October. The specific ramps to be closed can be viewed via an interactive map, www.google.com/ maps/d/viewer?mid=1wmMudfbx5LotjPxTJbqs9w6Lqh4&usp (or see the GC&M News Facebook page for a clickable link). Please note that no specific dates have been provided by TMR for the various ramp closures. The temporary ramp closures are part of site establishment activities, and are required to facilitate minor road shoulder widening works and roadside barrier installation. To minimise traffic disruptions, the ramps will be closed on alternative nights during night work hours from 7pm to 5am, Sunday to Thursday when traffic volumes are lower. This means no two ramps across the project site will be closed at the same time. Road users can expect changed traffic conditions including reduced speed limits and lane closures. Signed detours will be in place to guide motorists through roadworks. Beerwah now fire ant free What’s new at Beerwah Sportsground Following the discovery of a fire ant nest in the Coochin Twins Estate at Beerwah in June, Biosecurity Queensland’s National Red Imported Fire Ant Eradication Program Director, Geoff Kent, said he was pleased to advise no further fire ants had been found. “Since the detection, only one fire ant nest was detected which was immediately destroyed,” Mr Kent said. “Biosecurity Queensland had a team in Beerwah undertaking surveillance activities which included 12 field officers and two odour detection dogs. “Officers conducted surveillance activities out to 1 km from the nest and in high risk areas such as parks, paddocks, and school ovals.” Mr Kent said Biosecurity Queensland would continue to monitor the area. “As a final measure, Biosecurity Queensland will be conducting a secondary surveillance sweep in around 10 weeks’ time,” he said. “Tracing investigations are continuing to determine how a fire ant nest came to Beerwah, however it is likely they were transported in soil, turf or mulch. “We encourage residents to remain vigilant and continue to report any suspect ants or ant nests on their property or in local parks and business areas.” Fire ants vary in size between 2mm - 6mm, are coppery-brown with a dark abdomen, are aggressive and inflict a painful sting. If you see any suspect ants or nests, please take a photograph and submit via the online report form at www.daf.qld.gov.au/fireants or call Biosecurity Queensland on 13 25 23.

Thanks to minor grants from the Sunshine Coast Council, improvements have been made to the barbeque area and the Kennel Club Clubroom. The barbeque area is looking great with a new stainless steel benchtop, which has given it a fresh, clean look and is much easier to clean. The sportsground committee has also installed a stainless steel preparation bench and a sink for clean-up, as well as repairing the roof structure. All is looking spick and span and has already seen plenty of use as the area is a community facility. Feel free to come down and try it out.

The Sunshine Coast Kennel Club has just completed the first stage of improvements which includes concreting under the verandah area and the replacement of the old tilt door. The new retractable motorised roller door is great and will make life so much easier not having to lift the heavy tilt door with it sticking out in the way all day. The next stage is to line, insulate and paint the interior which the club hopes will be finished by November. The planned upgrades to the clubroom are in preparation for their celebration of 50 years as a club in 2019 when they intend to put on a really special show weekend.

Community News Zonta seeks young women candidates for international award The Zonta Club of Blackall Range is for the first time offering young women in Years 11 and 12 who live on the Range the chance to enter for an international award, Young Women in Public Affairs (YWPA). Coordinator of the project for the club, Judith Ross-Smith, said although Zonta International (ZI) had given the award for many years, this is the first time the Blackall Range club had entered a candidate. “It is a very exciting project and we are looking forward to finding a suitable young woman to represent our club. The winner will receive a $500 cheque from the club and go on to District judging, with the opportunity to ultimately win $US4,000 and be selected to speak at an international convention,” she said. The YWPA award reflects the mission of ZI to advance the status of women in every sphere. It was especially important that young women are encouraged to enter public life to improve not only the status of women, but also to be proactive in the improvement of life in general. Mrs Ross-Smith said the girl the club is looking for would be resident of, or attend a school on, the Blackall Range. The important thing is she should have demonstrated leadership qualities and have a desire to enter public life in any form in her chosen career. She should have good communication and public speaking skills and have shown an interest in the community.

Mooloolah resident Tara Towns has been nominated for a Queensland Community Achievement Award. An English teacher at Bribie Island State High School, Tara is committed to finding innovative ways to inspire and engage with her students. Now in her sixth year of teaching, Tara has been nominated for a University of Southern Queensland Teaching Excellence Award. “I love teaching teenagers,” said Tara. “My two favourite things about teaching are being able to open students to new ideas and sometimes challenging and extending them beyond what they thought was possible, and learning from the students. Sequined stars at Landsborough Hotel Contributed by Kylie Merola The real stars at the Landsborough Hotel’s recent Charity Pig Races were adorable piglets, dressed in coloured sequin jackets, that battled it out to help raise $5,000 for local community groups. A large crowd gathered for a great day of family fun to watch the piglets race around the track, navigating their way around an obstacle course of tyres, ramps, hay bales, and tunnels, before reaching a treat of milk at the finish line.

Before each race the piglets were auctioned off, with half the money collected going to the winner and the other half to local charities. This annual event supports great local organisations including the Landsborough State School P&C Association, Landsborough Rural Fire Brigade, Bee Gees United Football Club and the Lions Club of Beerwah. Well done to the team at Landsborough Hotel for once again hosting this event in support of local charities. Also, thank you to everyone who came along and joined in the fun. Our strong and busy man

Beerburrum Strongman Tim O'Shea, 39, usually finds himself lifting stones, pulling trucks or turning cabers in competition, but has found himself heading far from home to take on a new challenge. Tim has been learning the traditional Russian sport of Mas wrestling. Tim's strength has transferred well to the sport, and the International Mas-Wrestling Federation has taken notice, taking him to Vladivostok, in the far east of Russia, to compete in the Mas-Wrestling Kolmar Cup, on September 6 and 7. In the event Tim will be pitted against athletes from USA, Mongolia, Japan, Sri Lanka and of course Russia, in an attempt to win by either prising the ‘Mas’ (stick) from his opponent's grip, or by simply overpowering his opponent totally and pulling him over the centre board. Tim is also very busy in his other strength sport endeavours, competing in the powerlifting Spring Cup in Brisbane on August 27, and in Port Stephens, NSW, for the East Coast Highland Games championships on September 16. Competing in three different sports, in three different locations in the space of three weeks is a huge challenge, but one we are sure Tim is up for! GC&M News looks forward to reporting on Tim’s results during September.

Spring Ball at Glass House Hall

Local Community Halls have always been the centre of social activity in the towns scattered across the Sunshine Coast and Hinterland area. Dances, debutante Dance card from 1917 balls, fund-raising socials and celebration balls are central to the community for a variety of reasons. The Glass House Community Hall has, for many years, held dances on a regular basis, and today still holds dances in the hall on the first Saturday of every month. In conjunction with the Festival of Community Halls and the 50th anniversary of the naming of the Sunshine Coast, the Glass House Mountains Community Hall will be holding a Spring Ball this Saturday, September 2, commencing at 7.30pm. There will be plenty of lively music by the Commodores (new vogue, old time, modern), excellent company and good dancing, a lucky door prize and Monte Carlo, and included is the staple of all good dances and balls – home baked goodies for supper. In fact, the hall is renowned for its dance suppers. Entry is $10 per head. Golden memories of 50 years He’s been working in the butchery business for 50 years, but Robert Barry has no plans to retire! Robert stared working for Les and Una Dunning back as a 15 year old (riding to work on a pushbike), in what was then a five year apprenticeship at the family’s business on the corner of Simpson Street and Peachester Road at Beerwah. Over the years Robert has worked in a number of local butcher shops including a decade in his and Narelle’s business in Nambour, and since 2009 in their business at Burys Road at Beerwah. Robert describes the early days as being pretty different to today and his training involved being a slaughterman as well as a butcher. When he started out the butcher shop had wooden

chopping blocks and sawdust on the floor, and they didn’t have the high tech equipment of today. One of the afternoon chores was to cover the chopping boards with sawdust and give them a good scrubbing with a wire brush. The bulk meat was delivered to them from Kilcoy and all up the coast, in non-refrigerated vans. He still remembers when decimalisation came in everyone thought they were trying to rip them off, as a kilo cost so much more than a pound! He explained that in those days the dairy farmers from Peachester would send down sugar bags with their meat orders in the morning on the cream truck and their orders would be delivered in the sugar bags at the end of the day when the cream truck returned up the hill. There were no plastic bags, so all the meat was wrapped in greaseproof paper, then newspaper and tied with brown string. Robert reckons it’s not just the technology that has changed during that time, the types of meat that they sell has definitely shifted. In days gone by Robert reckons that when there were plenty of ladies who didn’t go out to work they cooked cheaper cuts of meat that required much longer preparation time. These days there are more requests for cuts of meat that are quicker and easier to prepare. Then there is the current trend of the television cooking shows. Robert and his daughter Kylie, who works in the business, reckon that they quickly know what’s been on these shows, if it’s a pork belly recipe – then everyone is looking for it! One of his favourite parts of the business has been developing their multi-award winning Peachester Gold ham, bacon and small goods,

The new farm shop opened in 2009 and customers are prepared to travel to purchase these products. These days there is plenty of focus on food from the paddock to the plate, which is nothing new to the Barrys who have been raising their own cattle for the past 13 years. Robert said he really enjoys having his own cattle as well as attending weekly cattle sales, which has meant he has been able to keep across what is going on in the industry, which can give him a bit of an edge when he is negotiating prices with his suppliers. Robert appreciates the opportunity the Dunning family gave him in getting his career started in Beerwah, and while he isn’t as ‘hands on’ in the butchering work these days, with his team of eight staff, and working with wife Narelle and daughter Kylie to manage the business, he can’t see a need to retire! Playgroup seeks community grandparents

The Mooloolah Valley Playgroup is looking for locals who would like to become a community grandparent. This is a great opportunity to connect with local families by being part of our friendly, fun playgroup. Helpers are invited to simply help parents in the kitchen, set-up and packup on a weekly or fortnightly basis, as well as chatting and playing, as a grandparent figure with our families (no age restrictions). Maleny Classics is gearing up for one of their most exciting Show 'n' Shines to be held on Father’s Day (this Sunday, September 3) at Witta Rec and Sports Club. So locals who enjoy showing off their classic cars, or admiring them, should head along between 9am and 1pm. Entry is free and food and refreshments will be available. This year their special feature will showcase BMW, and organisers are calling on owners of BMW cars and bikes of any model or year to register to come along and be part of this amazing display of 'BMW Past to Present'. School News With this week being one of the most exciting (for the kids) and challenging (for the parents) weeks of the year, expect to see plenty of great Book Week coverage in the September 6 edition.

Students work hard

The Beerwah High School Year 11 Building and Construction students recently acquired new skills, after the Australian Brick and Blocklaying Foundation came to the school to deliver an interactive ‘Try Brick Laying for a Day’ program. Students were able to mix mud, lay bricks and try the trade in a simulated environment. Students were informed of the intricacies of the trade and how to get involved.

The students are busy honing their skills in and around our school grounds and are currently working on paths and handball courts in and around a number of the school’s buildings and have recently completed paving and concreting around the resource centre.

Teamwork produces wins Fantastic planting day Contributed by Debbie Roberts at dance competition As part of National Tree Day, students at Contributed by Stacey Whyte Dance students from Glasshouse Christian College competed in the recent Australian Pinnacle Dance Challenge and excelled in multiple sections. Due to seasonal colds and illnesses the Primary Dance Team found themselves short by nine team members. Minutes before going on stage they rearranged all the sequences and were rewarded with first place! The Middle School Team received second place in both the Lyrical and Jazz sections and the Senior Team received first in Musical Theatre, second in Contemporary and third in Jazz. To top off a wonderful day, GCC Secondary Teams also won Overall Secondary Troupe. This award went to the team that showed the most promise and potential over the entire day.

Beerburrum State School had a fantastic Planting Day.

All classes visited the garden for an hour of fun and learning. Students rotated through three activities including planting vegetable and/or flower seedlings, garden art and seed sowing. Students were very excited to make golf ball ladybirds, soft drink bottle echidnas, a grass seed hairy caterpillar and pine cone bird seed feeders. Each student also became the proud owner of a sunflower seed in a hand-made cardboard pot which can be watered and planted until it shoots. All classes now have their very own garden beds to look after and are excited about watching their plants grow over the coming weeks and months.

Introducing Mel Johnson Mel has over 10 years of childcare experience behind her and has been with Queensland Childcare Services for five years. Relocating to the Sunshine Coast with her family at the beginning of last year, the mum of four (three children and a foster son) joined the Glass House Early Education Centre team. Speaking with Mel, it is apparent that she brings her long term dedication, passion and professionalism for early childhood education to her role as an educator at the centre. Being a mother and also having worked in the industry for so long has also provided a broader understanding of her own children and an ability to relate to other people’s children with warmth and compassion. It has also highlighted to her the importance of nurturing and encouraging children from a young age. Working with the ‘Senior Kindy’ children aged between three and four, Mel loves that she can really engage with the children. “This is such an enjoyable age! The children can express themselves well and it’s great that they can let us know how they are feeling and what activities they would like to do. At this age they get so excited about things and they have loads of energy – it’s lots of fun!” says Mel. Some of the activities that Mel is currently enjoying with Senior Kindy include a family cultural background exploration. This activity is done in collaboration with the children’s families and it encourages them to find out more about their family heritage. Activities include looking at national flags from different countries, listening to their music and even trying foods from these countries. Mel loves that the children develop a greater sense of inclusion and a broader

understanding of the people of the world and it is a highly enjoyable activity for everyone. Each week an alphabet ‘letter of the week’ is featured and the children are encouraged to place items in a ‘sound box’ for show and tell. Another very popular activity is anything to do with science! Mel enjoys that at this age the children are ‘very hands on’ and science experiments are a huge hit. “I get so much joy from being able to teach the kids something new and being able to encourage their self help skills. It’s great to be able to see the look of achievement on their faces when they can do something that they couldn’t do before. It’s also so lovely when we get the feedback from the parents that the kids have gone home and have been really excited about what they learnt during the day,” says Mel.

You Said It Dear ‘You Said it’ Contributors,

I would like to thank the many enthusiastic letter writers who submit letters for GC&M News. I love being able to include as many letters as possible each week. While I know you understand that I endeavour to be fair and equitable in what is printed with space limitations, I just thought I would let you all know the approach I am following for prioritising what letters are included. 1. Every letter writer is given an opportunity to have their issue included, which means that when a non-regular letter writer contributes a letter on a new topic it will receive higher priority than a regular letter writer who contributes a letter about an on-going topic. 2. Where a number of letters are received on the same topic not all may be printed. However I will include a variety of responses, where different issues / concerns are raised. 3. With a limit of 300 words per letter, priority is given to letters that keep the issues clear and focused. 4. Also some letters are held over to be used in a later edition when additional space is available. Cheers

No room for the community

The perfect day for a picnic. In one hand, your toddler, in the other, a stroller with the baby. Your partner carries the eskies and a ball game. Your mother and grandmother walk ahead with your five-year-old son. It’s a short and easy walk, including for your grandmother who uses a wheelie walker. Starting from town, you enter the Maleny Community Precinct and take a pathway that follows the creek until it meets the picnic ground, a large pocket of land dotted with shade trees around which the pathway continues through riparian rainforest. You set up the picnic and the children join a host of others on the adventure playground. Some of the above is true, some not. The ‘pocket’ is not a picnic ground but an empty paddock which council approved for development into polo, jumping and dressage arenas in 2013, a decision confirmed in 2016 to include a multistorey carpark for horse floats and spectators. There are two picnic areas but both are too tiny for more than a few picnickers. One is forlornly located right beside a road. The other involves a long walk in defiance of babies, oldies and the carrying of eskies. The toilets are 400 metres away. Precinct land, excluding environmentally protected areas and pathways, are now firmly privileged to horse-riders and golfers over the community at large. Thanks to a $500,000 donation from you and me via our rates, golfers will have 18 holes to play on (GCM News, August 16). A ‘community’ golf course, the Maleny Golf Club describes it, as if its location on community land made it so. Golf is an ailing sport limited to a few people, mostly older men, with time to spare. Parliamentary qualifications

The latest fallout from political interpretation of Section 44(i) of the Australian Constitution is becoming farcical. Barnaby Joyce, whose father emigrated from New Zealand, was born in Tamworth and is an Australian citizen who has no interest in exercising his right to be a subject or citizen of NZ, unlike other parliamentarians who were real citizens of other countries prior to becoming Australians. A recent article in the Huffington Post points out how ridiculous this archaic 19th century law has 18

become. Section 44(i) says that if you are “a subject or a citizen or entitled to the rights or privileges of a subject or a citizen of a foreign power” you are ineligible to be elected to, or serve in Federal Parliament. You don’t have to have the rights and privileges, you just have to be entitled to them! NZ law says if your father was a Kiwi citizen then you are too. However, under recent and little-noticed changes to NZ laws Australian citizens no longer need a visa to live, study or work in NZ. That means all Australians are entitled to the rights and privileges of a subject of NZ, not as a citizen with voting rights, but to be a subject of that country, living there, subject to NZ law, working or studying. Our High Court should use common sense in ruling on Barnaby’s case but a literal interpretation of the law would now mean that none of our Federal Parliamentarians are eligible to hold office. A 1997 enquiry into Section 44 by a parliamentary committee recommended that the law be changed by referendum but that obviously went into the “too hard basket” resulting in this embarrassing imbroglio. Dual citizenship

It will be interesting to see what the outcome will be when politicians attend the Australian High Court to set a hearing date for their dual citizenship case. Does anyone remember a politician by the name of Heather Hill (nee Rafe)? She was a member of Pauline Hansen's One Nation Party, who was elected as a senator for Queensland in 1998. She had denounced her dual citizenship, however, she had to travel to New Zealand for some urgent matter, her Australian Passport was to arrive the very next day, but they would not supply it to her for the New Zealand trip, so she used her denounced UK passport. The Australian High Court Decision was made in about 1999 and she lost, having been voted in to our Senate from memory. High Court judges do not win their positions; they are placed in that position by our Federal Government. As a precedence that has been set in the case of Heather Hill, it will be interesting to see just what happens in the current case when they front the High Court of Australia. I was taught as a police officer in NSW that negligence or ignorance of the law might be a reason, but not an excuse. Back in 1999 it was a headline case and anyone who is anyone would have and should have taken notice of that decision and furthermore, any person with aspirations of being a parliamentarian would have surely made sure and certain his or her dual citizenship was denounced and cleared up. I am sorry, but no one is going to tell me they were not aware or did not know they had dual citizenship, that's where negligence and ignorance comes in. Brian Stallworthy Glass House Mountains

Good for Beerwah

Having read a number of letters in recent weeks from people complaining about the Millbrook development at 95 Peachester Road in Beerwah, I wish to voice an opposing opinion. I for one think that Council should be applauded in allowing a diverse range of living choices in terms of both size and also price range, as not everyone can afford or even want the hassle of maintaining a large house on acreage, which are very much the majority in the district in terms of overall land occupied. l don't personally think that lot sizes of 235 to 478m2 are particularly unreasonable given that the small estate is situated across the road from an aged care facility and within walking distance of not only the town’s shopping hub, but most importantly, Beerwah train station. This means that people living there can get about without using a car, therefore reducing pollution to

our beautiful town. Beerwah has for some years now been identified as a district centre and hub, and I believe that all of the business and shop owners in town, of which too many remain empty, will be more than happy to have more potential customers. The more potential train passengers the more likely it is that we will see the much awaited rail duplication and upgrade. I also feel that it is a bit premature and degrading to the future families that will be living at the Millbrook estate to be calling it a 'shambles' and an 'eyesore' when it is still being built and not yet landscaped, as I have seen many construction sites but am yet to see one that you would call something of beauty until it was completed. Land development

I strongly agree with J Fleming on land development in Landsborough. As a long term resident of nearly 30 years, I too am concerned with what could become of our lovely town in the future. When I see more and more old homes going up for sale, sitting on sizable blocks of land, I shudder as to who these homes are being sold to. If we end up with more town houses and units in our town, what a joke it is to have Landsborough known as an historic town. Where will historic come into it if people traveling through our town could possibly only see modern townhouses and units, with maybe the odd historic building left. As it is, Landsborough Maleny Road is not coping with the high volume of traffic, especially at peak times, without fitting in more and more residents to add to the traffic problems. Caring community

While walking my regular route on Sunday August 20 I suffered a heavy fall caused by uneven paving slabs on the footpath. After being transported to A&E at Nambour Hospital it was discovered that my upper arm was fractured. I would like to thank the many people who came to my assistance and gave comfort while awaiting the ambulance. Special thanks to Jamie, a new resident to the area, who called the ambulance and stayed with me and my husband until the paramedics arrived. Re: Heavy price for past decision

Mr Hampstead’s letter (GC&M News, August 16) is the usual ALP dumping on small business and taxing them out of existence! Labor’s taxes and levies are killing small business. Does Mr Hampstead listen to reports of how many small businesses have already closed down or is that another truth that Labor and its Premier have not heard about? The Premier should have put a stop to interstate free-loading on our dumps but she claimed she didn’t know. Records show she did know. Doesn’t any ALP member know that to penalise business for bringing rubbish to designated dumps will mean that rubbish will be found dumped on road-sides, in council parks, State Forests and National Parks because that dump levy can mean the difference between viable or unviable business? The LNP and its former Minister for Environment, Andrew Powell, saw the benefits of providing a lowcost service, encouraging small business to dump at official dump-sites rather than littering the local areas because it was cheaper. Surely that was a big plus for the environment!

As for the criticism of former LNP Minister for Environment and tree-clearing law amendments, the truth is that under Labor laws, farmers were penalised for maintaining the status quo; clearing encroaching re-growth, so they could continue the struggle to operate profitably; as suburban residents mow lawns or remove intrusive shrubs. Government officers have misidentified trees or wrongly identified regrowth, full of exotic trees, as pristine habitat. There is a history of erroneous charges against land-holders, yet the Labor Government proposes to make laws to place the onus of truth on farmers and force them into legal costs to fight the charges of which they are not guilty. Re: Politican’s picture

I would like to join Stephen Lang in his objection to the ugly billboards of our present Member for Glasshouse, Andrew Powell. It appears at least ‘inappropriate’ while perhaps not ‘illegal’ to have these political signs carefully placed on private properties belonging to his faithful party members before an election is called. If there is a code of conduct on this matter, then it seems it should above all be upheld by those in public office. It must be a nervous time for Andrew as his margin

slipped beyond his wildest dreams (or nightmares) at the last State Election in large part due to the atrocious government he was part of... led by the notorious Campbell Newman. Personally I have always liked Andrew Powell... he seems like a nice bloke but he did not help himself by being possibly the worst Queensland Environmental Minister in living memory. He sought to turn National Parks into Theme Parks; he supported large mining companies against the best interests of the agricultural sector; and he irresponsibly risked the long term survival of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. Andrew supported clear felling during his term as Environment Minister; the cause of the destruction of habitat and food sources for untold numbers of iconic wildlife. And he refused to support legislation from the present Labor Government when they sought to reverse his awful clear felling legislation. What an awful legacy! Now as the Shadow Minister for Transport, have we seen him working to present alternate policies to further improve roads and rail services? No, we just see negativity and political stunts. Sadly, these very large signs of Andrew may actually work against him, reminding us of his past and present failures and encouraging us to look forward to a new representative in the next State Election? I am continually dismayed to see the graffiti attacks on Andrew Powell’s advisory signs. Unlike the Greens who put signs on council property and tied to poles on main roads, all of Andrew’s signs are on private property with the owners’ permission. Trespassing on private property and destroying personal property should be condemned by all sides of politics. It is a mystery why some in our community encourage graffiti and this illegal behaviour. Asthma is described as a long-term lung condition in which the airways in the lungs are sensitive and react quickly to triggers causing a flare-up where the muscle around the airways begin to swell causing narrowing and breathing difficulty. A flare-up can come on slowly over hours or days or very quickly, classifying it as an Asthma Attack. In Australia, over two million people of all ages suffer from Asthma, making 11% of the population. Asthma cannot be cured but can be controlled by following a daily management plan, accurate inhaler technique and an established Asthma Action Plan in the event of a flare-up or attack. Inhalers are commonly used to enable the access of medicine directly to the lungs, however up to 90% of people use their inhalers incorrectly leading to poor symptom control. A simple spacer device provides maximal administration of medicine into the lungs providing better control of symptoms. A spacer is a plastic container with a mouthpiece and a hole for the inhaler on opposite end. Currently, we have a range of spacers on special with a saving of up to $5. Out & About Great weather for Charity Sports

Great weather on Saturday saw a large crowd at the Beerwah Sports Ground to support the 46th annual Beerwah Charity Sports day. As well as an excellent standard of nominations in the horse events, there was a good variety of vehicles in the Show & Shine, and an amazing display of strength in the Strongest Man and Woman competition. A record number of entries in the photography competition, of a very high standard, produced an impressive display. The scarecrow competition leading up to the sports generated a lot of fun, and the array of scarecrows welcoming everyone to the grounds created a festive atmosphere. Thanks to all who participated in the various competitions, and also a big thank you to those who provided entertainment and displays, and to the participants and organisers of the Talent Quest. Once again the general community gave our stalls strong support, and we would like to thank everyone who contributed the plants, produce and cakes. Their combined efforts make a major contribution to the fundraising effort for Cancer Council Queensland. This event is a huge undertaking each year, and it is community involvement which makes it possible. I must express appreciation for the generous support of our local business community, the other community groups who are part of the team, and the dedicated army of volunteers who help with preparations, on sports day, and finally cleaning up on Sunday. So, on behalf of the Committee, thank you Glasshouse Country community for your enthusiastic support for the 2017 Charity Sports. (More information and results will be in next week’s edition). • Grow any herbs now – except for basil (it’s too early) and coriander (it’s too late). • Grevilleas will be flowering away. Cutting flowers for inside the house will promote new growth and better plant health. • Pruning of edible fig trees can be carried out. Be very vigorous – one-third can be cut off. Barung Landcare Steelwood or Corduroy Tree Sarcopteryx stipata Steelwood or Corduroy Tree, is a subtropical evergreen rainforest tree found throughout eastern Australia, from the Bulga Plateau in NSW north to Fraser Island. The name ‘steelwood’ refers to the very tough, axe-resistant timber. Steelwood usually occurs as a small bushy tree or large shrub to about 10 metres with grey, wrinkled bark. Branchlets, petioles and new buds are densely rusty-hairy; the finepointed, compound leaves are a beautiful pink colour when new and shiny green above when mature. Small, creamy-white, five-petalled flowers appear from August to October on panicles. Fruits mature in November and December and are showy, red or pink fleshy capsules with three cells, encasing three brown/black, shiny cylindrical seeds. Ripe steelwood fruits are eaten by bowerbirds, pigeons, green catbirds, Lewin's honeyeaters and other fruit-eating forest animals. Steelwood is a member of the soap berry family (Sapindaceae) along with lychee, maple, guarana and, of course, soapberry. The genus name Sarcopteryx means ‘fleshy wing’ referring to the often wingshaped fruit. Steelwood seedlings are available now from Barung Landcare’s Community Nursery in Porters Lane, North Maleny. New members Billie Lupton and Diane Bek were presented with their badges and after lunch we had a very interesting talk on the Glass House Mountains from Roger Riley who is well informed on the area and is highly involved with the local Information Centre. Sport Mooloolah touch footy champs!

Contributed by Michelle Lenz Selected students from Years 5 & 6 at Mooloolah State School recently formed boys and girls touch football teams that then went to interschool sports and came out on top against their rival schools! The teams have been heading to interschool sports every Friday, going up against some stiff competition and still leading the way. The boys team from Mooloolah State School was undefeated and the girls team only lost one game in the competition. They competed with great enthusiasm, skills and teamwork to become victors in both the girls and boys competition. Their rivals fought hard but couldn’t stop the winning efforts of the Mooloolah touch football teams. They came away with two school trophies and were very excited by their wins.

A great run for students Peachester State School’s athletics carnival at Skippy Park this year saw some excellent running and great efforts by competitors. Congratulations and best wishes to Emma S and Cooper J who have progressed to the Regionals. Emma will compete in long jump, 800 metres, discus and multi event and Cooper will compete in long jump, 100 metres and multi event. Peachester State School 2017 Athletics Age Champions were: 9 year olds - Ethan C and Erynn B; 10 year olds - Sam A and Emma S; 11 year olds - James C and Carys B and; 12 year olds - Dylan B and Zara C. The reign of Coochin House prevails with an overall points score of 622 over Stanley on 361.

The Range Croquet Club

Contributed by Ken Barker So many competitions were played this week that there was very little opportunity for social play. In fact, only one game was played between Sarah Widin and Helen Andrews on Thursday. The result was a win to Sarah 12 - 7. The interclub pennants, for the Bray shield, saw our players lose all three games against Nambour. Sarah Widin went down to Bill Habner 13 -16. Frances Harper discovered that hoop two took a dislike to her and lost 4 - 13 to Robyn Pettman. Sarah and Robert Elliot were defeated by Bill and Robyn 9 - 12. Participation is an important thing. It is great to see that our club is always able to field a team. Well done all players. The intraclub championships have results in three divisions. In division 2 Donna Manning 11 defeated Nick Cram 8. Donna and Vince Carbery had an exciting game where Donna nudged Vince out 26 - 23. Vince 14, was unlucky to lose to Ken Barker 18. Ken also beat Nick 19 - 13. Division 3 has two players, Sarah Widin and Robert Elliot, so it will be decided as a best of three. In game 1 Robert beat Sarah 12 - 2, game two saw a reversal of fortunes with Sarah winning 20 - 9. Division four had Helen Andrews getting up against Sally Adams 12 - 6. On Monday three of our players, Vince Carbery, Nick Cram and Ken Barker competed in the Golden Oldies. Vince and Ken won two games each in Block A where Rob Robertson from Point Lookout won. Nick won three of his four games to win Block B. Joycelyn Lerch from Caloundra won Block C and the overall winner was Heather Smith from Coolum. A very enjoyable day was had by all. On Saturday we have five players, Vince and Val Carbery, Donna Manning, Sarah Widin and Ken Barker attending a coaching clinic at Toombul. This is an all-day event organised by the Croquet Association of Queensland where coaches get together and trade ideas. Peter Landrebe, the manager/coach of the most successful McRobertson Shield team in 82 years (First Australian win!), will be speaking. Club play days are Thursday and Sunday at 1 for 1.30pm. Contributed by Pauline Fraley Witta Wagtails had a disappointing loss to Nambour Heights. Thanks to Claire, Gerry, Christine and Sonia. The Whistlers played at Witta against Ballinger Smartinis. It was a bit cold, so we all needed a good warm up and first sets were perfect for that. Started with closed set, or lots of deuces at every game. But then we got our games back and finished with a good win. Score was 48-18 games, 8-0 sets. Team was Liz Mellish, Maree Hooley, Donna Kuskopf and Aki Lepper. The Wildcats were at Maroochydore against the Friday Flyers. In picture perfect tennis conditions, both sides gave it everything. Pauline, Annie, Libby and Anne were the eventual winners at the end. The girls showed great team spirit, thoroughly enjoying their time representing their school, and giving 100% effort. Thanks to the school’s PI teacher, Ms Traynor, the softball team also had extra training practice at school in the lead up.

R/Up were Ross Siegle, Ian Pepper (visitor) and Graham Nicholson with 2 wins and a margin of 30. Lucky team draw went to Graham Condie, Sue O’Hagan and Warren Blackbourne. Tuesday, August 22: Ladies Pennant, Div 3. Round 7 Glasshouse vs Bongaree home. It was simple, win and they become Division 3 champions for 2017, and that’s exactly what they did. Chris Dougan, Millie Freshwater, Eileen Pierce and Jan Lawson won 24-18. With Margaret Beasley, Di Hume, Wendy Platt and Chris Freshwater 27-18, winning overall 51-36. Friday, August 25: Ladies Pennant Div 3. Round 8. Glasshouse vs Bongaree away. Our ladies had another big win with Joy Sauer, Rae Farrell, Di Hume and Wendy Platt winning 24-13, and Maz Idle, Chris Dougan, Millie Freshwater and Jan Lawson winning 33-8, overall 57-21. With a bye next week and all the hard work done, everyone can put their feet up and enjoy being the champions! Fantastic achievement. Saturday, August 26: Men’s Pennant 4th Division Pennant away to Caboolture Lakes. It was a very tough day on the green with our boys going down on both rinks losing 59-40. We now get ready to finish our bowling year with the Spring Carnival and mixed games. One eye is already on Premier 7s starting January 6 and the Hinterland Local League starting in late January or early February 2018. Sheets are up at the club for you to put your name down if you intend to play. We need to get some idea of numbers by mid-October. Both men and ladies. Men’s Triples are drawn with the 1st two rounds on Sunday, September 10. Mixed Triples nominations are now open. Our AGM is this Saturday, September 2 at 9.30am in the Club Glasshouse dining room. Please make the effort and attend. We have a few nominations for different positions which is great! Thanks to those people. Another area we need to work on in the next few months is getting more people in the office on the Wednesday and Thursday doing game cards and money.

Local boxers compete in Golden Gloves Contributed by Stephen Pitt Hinterland Boxing Club took a team of five to contest the National Golden Gloves in Brisbane on the weekend. With over 500 athletes competing, the Golden Gloves is the biggest competition in the country with athletes categorised into weight, age and experience. Luca Grayson won Gold in the School Boy under 32kg division with a strong performance stopping his New Zealand opponent in the second round. Ethan Palmer ground out a gutsy performance to take Gold in the School Boy under 46kg division. Bryce Thomsen won his semi-final on the Friday and backed up again on the Saturday to out box his opponent from New South Wales to take home Gold in the Junior 48kg division. Dana Coolwell boxed in a special bout against New Zealand on Sunday, out boxing his opponent to notch up another win.

Maleny Bowls Club

Contributed by Jim King If bowling in beautiful weather doesn’t get you in to bowl on Tuesday mornings then perhaps the $134 jackpot will. Last Tuesday’s winners were Peter Duffy and Jim King. It was good to see some of our regular bowlers return to join us. The club was well represented at the Woodford Triples event on Monday by David and Jane Burgess and Miles Allen – thanks for offering to be available for the away game. If any club member wishes to play away games please put your name on the sheets at the club or contact Jim by phone or email to providore@malenybowlsclub.com Numbers are also slowly returning to Wednesday night barefoot bowls as the night time temperatures warm up. Social and casual bowlers welcome – 6pm barbeque for a 6.30 start, just $13 and bowls and instruction provided. Last week’s winners were the Bridge Club, Sunstone and Tom Ukola and Ray Elmore (who were nameless on the night). The touchers went to Craig Miller, Ian Chatterton, Miles Allen and Ray Spry while Christine Lister won the lucky draw and Steve Porter the money board. Visitors Ray and Gerry McGrath joined us for Friday afternoon scroungers. They brought a few light showers with them which only caused a short interruption to the bowling. Winners were Don Ginns, Joe Walters, Miles Allen and Allen Lange. Harold Hopper won the money board and Miles Allen was present to win the Watson’s Garage petrol voucher in the members draw. Very pleasing to see eight primary school age children come along for Jack Attack on Saturday morning – all welcome at 9.30am, just $3 for equipment, bottle of water and fruit. We had several groups of new casual bowlers join us for social bowls on Saturday afternoon. Visitors and casual bowlers are welcome on Saturday afternoons between 1pm and 3pm-ish. Cost is just $5 for non-members, bowls and instruction included. Preparations are underway for Plum Pudding Day which has been scheduled for Thursday November 9, so ladies keep this day free.
