Hi Everyone... On Thursday night we had dinner at Baan Thai at Beerwah, which, not surprisingly, I will be talking about in our Dine In Take Out section. I will leave the discussion of the menu for readers who are interested on page 26. However, I have to say chatting to the business owner on the night really got me thinking about how much I am looking forward to the Street Party on October 18. This will be the first time that Baan Thai has been open for a Street Party and they can’t wait to be a part of the excitement of the night. If you are thinking of heading along to the Street Party with friends, why not book yourself a table at one of the many local restaurants before the night to ensure you have a good spot to enjoy the great vibe of the event. Glasshouse orchid show shines It was standing room only at the Glasshouse Country Orchid Show and Spring Spectacular last Friday and Saturday. The Beerwah Community Hall erupted in a blaze of colourful blooms, with the heady scent of orchids floating among the crowds who were drawn to the outstanding displays. Orchid societies from as far away as Gympie came to compete, with the main display coming from the local Glasshouse Country group. There were countless examples of spectacular orchid blooms, including some rare and exotic varieties. Most people think orchids must be hard to grow

… and some may well be … but that’s not always the case, as some of the talks and demonstrations on the day explained. Most popular – as always – was the plant sale, with the best quality and the rarest plants being snapped up by savvy shoppers. However, shows such as this don’t just happen by themselves. The members of the Glasshouse Country Orchid Society spent weeks planning and organising for the event. Congratulations must go to all members and volunteers who helped organise this year’s event. It truly was something special. Below is a tiny selection of the blooms that were on display. See more photos on page 28.

Tough new farm trespass laws to protect Australia’s farmers from the unlawful actions of animal activists have passed the Australian Parliament. Federal Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace said the Criminal Code Amendment (Agricultural Protection) Bill showed Australia’s farmers that Australians were on their side. “Militant animal activists have invaded farms across the country trespassing, threatening and harassing farming families,” Mr Wallace said. “This Bill makes it a criminal offence to publish material via a carriage service like the internet if you intend to incite trespass, property damage or theft on agricultural land. “Animal activists who use the personal information of family farmers to incite trespass risk imprisonment of up to five years. “The Morrison McCormack government is serious about deterring those who want to disrupt and intimidate our farmers, fishers and foresters in their homes and on their properties.” Agriculture Minister Bridget McKenzie said Australians expected the farmers “who feed and clothe us – and many millions around the world – should not be harassed, or worse, as they go about their work”. “The time has come for activists to understand that they can’t just descend on someone’s home and place of work, interfere with their

Transformative journey to reach international audience By Sonia Clark

Stacey O’Brien from Glass House Mountains is helping transform grief and loss by offering a courageous, inspiring and thoughtful perspective to help others. Through her books, ‘A Kiss from an Angel’ and ‘The Healer’s Workbook’, Stacey has used writing as part of her own healing journey while also providing valuable insights and transformative tools for bereaved parents, midwives and care professionals coping with stillbirth. With her husband Gavin, Stacey wrote ‘A Kiss from An Angel’ following the devastating stillbirth of their son Finn in 2002. Following publication in 2005, Stacey embarked on an intensive 529-day book tour around Australia to share her insights. One of her key aims was to share her knowledge with midwives and care providers into how best to support the bereaved through the turmoil of grief and loss. Stacey has continued this journey for the past 15 years releasing a second book, ‘The Healers Workshop’, for health workers and has continued to develop workshop and training tools to give practical guidance to navigate grief towards healing and self-care. Stacey said she was prompted to write her second book in answer to many questions raised by midwives around stillbirth as well as encouraging safe practices of self-care to process grief within their career. “I just couldn’t fathom how midwives could possibly go through the grief I went through as part

of their daily jobs. I realised that there was a massive hole when it came to understanding and caring for both the stillbirth bereaved and the midwives who also had to deal with the grief of loss. I realised that as an industry, care professionals needed more care,” Stacey said. Over the past few years, Stacey has grown her business, also called A Kiss from an Angel, to provide healing and grief workshops for health workers and their clients, healing modalities and more recently accredited online training tools for midwifes and care professionals. She has also been invited to speak on her work at both interstate and international industry conferences and forums. Stacey recently presented a workshop on transforming grief and self-care for midwives at the Australian College of Midwives national conference in Canberra and also presented at the Australian Nurse and Midwife Federation conference in Melbourne. She was thrilled to discover that her submissions to speak at the International Confederation of Midwives conference next June in Bali had been accepted and has also received confirmation that she has been accepted to speak at the International Maternity Expo in London this November.

Stacey said she loved what she does and that as her business and speaking engagements move up to the next level, she is grateful that she has been allowed to “dive deep” into her work and that others have appreciated and gained insight from her tireless efforts to inform, inspire and transform. “I’m really excited about speaking at the London conference as the event will be attended by the heads of midwifery and maternity hospitals from around the world, representatives from the WHO [World Health Organization] and will be live streamed internationally,” Stacey said. With a Senate enquiry currently under way into stillbirth, Stacey hopes that her insights will be seen as valuable and used as part of an ongoing educational toolkit to assist others. “I’ve been developing and creating this for so long and it’s taken a lot of hard work to keep going over the years. “Now I feel like I’m finally catching up to the dream and I’m grateful that others see the value of my passion to help connect and heal others to transform their lives,” Stacey said. New resort-style retirement opportunity A major new retirement community is about to take shape in Beerwah, with a recent development application submitted to Sunshine Coast Council.

Aspect Glasshouse will be a 200-dwelling lifestyle resort for the over 50s situated on Steve Irwin Way between Back Creek Road and the Beerwah Hideaway.

House designs and styles will be varied to create a visually attractive mix, with all dwellings having at least 20m2 of private outdoor area.

The 14.3 hectare area, currently owned by Stewart and Margaret Skerman and Baywood Pty Ltd, is to be developed by Aspect Property Group, which the development application says has constructed major residential complexes in urban centres such as St Lucia and Toowong. Zoned as low density residential, the proposed retirement facility is within allowable uses under the council’s planning scheme, so the application has been deemed code assessable, meaning that no public notification or submission period is required. Aspect Property Group describes the proposal as the “… first purpose designed and built resort for over 50s in the Glass House Mountains area, providing a viable option for downsizing locals to reside in, allowing more time to appreciate pastimes and interact with their local community”. According to the plans submitted to council, there will be 200 residences with 190 two-bedroom dwellings, with a mix of single and double garages, and ten duplex-style buildings, each with two onebedroom residences.

The plans also provide for a range of unique communal and recreation facilities, including gym, yoga room, barbeque facilities, pool area, cinema, billiards room, library, communal indoor and outdoor dining areas, lawn bowling greens, a tennis court, pickleball courts, putting green, kids playground and craft room, men’s shed, dog park, a pocket park and retained vegetation areas, recreational vehicle (RV) storage sheds, a maintenance shed and a garden shed. A mini-bus service will take residents to local shops and facilities, making it easier for people to be less reliant on private cars and there will be on-site professional management. “The design reflects the fabric of the modern country town of Beerwah and the Sunshine Coast hinterland, with the majestic Glass House Mountains setting a wonderful backdrop,” an Aspect spokesperson said. “The project’s intent is to provide quality, affordable housing in a secure, lifestyle environment.” Most of the existing vegetation will be retained and although some trees will be cleared, these have been identified as not being of significant habitat value. A flooding study shows almost all the land is floodfree although some areas could be affected during extreme wet conditions, such as a one-in-200-year rain event. A supply and demand study showed the facility was most likely to attract potential residents from Birtinya to Pelican Waters, through the hinterland across Buderim, Palmwoods, Blackall Ranges, Maleny and Conondale and through Glasshouse Country regions. Within this zone, the developers have calculated more than 25% growth in the 55+ years age group from 2016–2026.

The Bowling Twins

Glass House Mountains’ locals Dianne (Di) Hume and Jennifer (Jenny) Hobson recently marked a double celebration - their 70th birthdays and the 50th wedding anniversary of Jenny and her husband John. GC&M News sat down with the identical twin sisters to find out a little more about their life, their enduring love of horses and equestrian competition, their passion for lawn bowls and what it’s like to be a twin. Q: Tell us a little about your life growing up? A: (Di and Jenny) We grew up in Newport on Sydney’s northern beaches. When our mum had us it was such a shock to have twins that she never repeated it! So it was just us growing up together. We got our first horse at 14 and that was the start of our lifelong interest in horses. In those days there were grassy areas near our houses so there was somewhere to tether horses. We got given our first horse Brownie when a neighbour up the road was moving house and needed someone to look after him for a while. We ended up keeping him until the day he died. Q: When did you first marry and then move away from each other? A: (Jenny) Well Di got married first at 18 and continued to ride Brownie for a few more years before she divorced at 23 and moved to the Hunter Valley, where she lived on a horse stud with her new partner. John and I married when I was 20 and in 1972 we moved to Wellington in NSW where we went on to breed horses. John and I have three children and Di has two children. Both Di and I have been interested in equestrian competition and horses most of our lives and I

still judge dressage events around the state today. Interestingly, both our daughters Jessica and Freya have gone on to enjoy competitive success in horse riding, dressage and jumping. Q: When did you move closer to each other? A: (Di) Jenny and John moved to Queensland in 1981 and in 1988 I moved up here with my second husband. Jenny and I and our families were only about 15 minutes away from each other, which was lovely. Jenny ended up working at Westpac bank Morayfield for 20 years and I ended up working at ANZ bank at Beerwah for 11 years. (Jenny) John and I retired in 2005 and then spent the next nine years travelling around the country. We spent a lot of time up north fishing and every summer we would come back and stay with Di and Dennis. In 2013 John and I bought a house in Glass House Mountains. Q: You are both very involved in lawn bowls and are members of Club Glass House. When did you start? A: (Di) In 1993 I took up golf and loved that and played it for many years. Then in 2003 I started playing lawn bowls with Glasshouse Country Bowls Club once I’d retired from the bank. Jenny started playing here in 2005. Q: So… who is the better bowler? A: (Jenny) Di is! She’s been club champion eight times and has been district champion of champions three times! Q: How did you celebrate your 70th birthdays and what’s your tip for living well? A: (Jenny and Di) Our children sent us both off

Dianne (Di) Hume and Jennifer (Jenny) Hobson to see Hugh Jackman in Brisbane and we went shopping all day and had a great time buying lots and relaxing together. The following Saturday we had a large party with 70 + people. We also celebrated Jenny and John’s anniversary at the party. The big surprise on the night was that Jenny wore her original wedding dress – which still fits! One of the secrets to living well is that we both spend a lot of time in our gardens. New Telstra tower for Glass House Sunshine Coast Council is set to assess another telecommunications tower application in Glass House Mountains, this time from Telstra as part of the federal government’s mobile black spot program. The material change of use application proposes a 41.1m monopole tower on private land at 8 Woodrows Road, Glass House Mountains to provide “… improved 4G telecommunications services within the Glass House Mountains area and surrounding localities”. According to the planning documents, the site was selected as the most appropriate location based on planning scheme considerations, technical and coverage objectives, cost considerations, land tenure, visual impact and engineering/design criteria. Sixteen possible locations were assessed with 8 Woodrows Road determined as the most suitable.

Council’s planning scheme requires telecommunication towers to be sited more than 400m from residences. This location has three houses within this perimeter but Telstra considers this inconsequential as the “… residences are buffered from the proposal by significant mature vegetation and terrain change that would likely reduce the visual impact to the residential areas”. No vegetation is to be cleared during the construction and screening plantings will be used to help hide the ancillary structures associated with the pole tower. The application is classified as impact assessable, meaning that it will be advertised and locals will have the chance to make public submissions. Makers and crafters from around the region will come together for the inaugural Maleny Handmade Markets on Sunday, October 13. The quarterly markets are being organised by three entrepreneurial locals - Nicole Hilton, Marie Shannon and Sarah Williams. Sarah said the markets would give people a place to show and sell their handmade goods and, as all of the stalls would be different, there would be something of interest for everyone. As well as being an organiser, Sarah is a bestselling author and will be at the market signing books, one of which is set in Maleny. “I fell in love with this town the first time we came here. Parents reported to staff how wonderful it was to see for themselves such a welcoming and calm environment offered at Beerwah. They saw firsthand how the school offers a range of learning experiences that develops and ignites creativity and imagination. The current prep students showed the pre-preps a typical day in the prep room and also supported them to feel more comfortable about coming to school next year. Contributed by Jill Forster Glasshouse Districts Cricket Club (GDCC) recently announced the introduction of a junior girls’ and women’s teams for the 2019/2020 season - the first time in the club’s long history. So far we have enough players for a full women’s team but we still need to recruit a number of girls to make up a team. Given that the club has never fielded a female team before, we are currently fundraising to help cover the costs of sourcing the specific equipment and clothing needed, and to help cover other fees associated with getting the women’s and girls’ season up and running. Not to be missed running event

RunFest is on again for its eighth year on Sunday, October 13. Organised by the Lions Club of Maleny Blackall Range, the annual event attracts runners from across South East Queensland as well school teams of students and parents. Last year the event attracted more than 240 runners, from the experienced athletes competing in the 21.1km half marathon to primary school students. As well as the half marathon there is a 10km, 5km and 3km run/walk. The route of the half marathon, 10km and 5km events follows the edge of the Blackall Range overlooking the magnificent Glass House Mountains. Past participants have marvelled at the picturesque route and have acknowledged it as the best in South East Queensland. The half marathon challenges athletes who say its undulating route is the best they have run and the most competitive. The shorter events have attracted seasoned athletes as well as school students from various Sunshine Coast schools. There is prize money for the half marathon, 10km and 5km runs totalling $1500, donated by sponsors. The main focus of the 3km run is for primary schools to enter a team to compete for the participation trophy. The school with the most participants wins the trophy to display for the year. There is also a team trophy and prize money for the 10km event for the team with the lowest aggregate times for the first three runners across the line. The event raises funds for the Childhood Cancer Research Foundation, which supports children with cancer and funds research into the disease, which is close to the heart of many families throughout Australia. Research is ongoing and needs support to find a cure for this dreadful disease. This is an event not to be missed and is already well supported by sponsors including the Sunshine Coast Council, ReMax Hinterland, Maleny Realty and Maleny District Sport and Recreation Association. Other guests included several potential new members. Representing the ladies auxiliary, Lorraine Wise spoke about the recent Beerwah Charity Sports and Spring Carnival, thanking everyone who was involved. Lion Bob Banner then gave an overview of the Lions involvement on the day. “We can’t all be generals, the doctors and scientists involved in this war on cancer,” he said. “But this Lions Club showed they could be a very effective infantry, the foot soldiers on the ground joining the incredible army of fundraisers on the day.” Guest speaker Steve Hood spoke of how impressed he was with the Beerwah club, particularly its efforts at recycling, creating

Maleny launches 18-hole member drive with three-year deal Maleny Golf Club is offering a special three-year membership option to new members as it prepares to bring the final six holes of the award-winning Sunshine Coast hinterland course into play in early 2020. Maleny Golf Club, which opened in 2015, is known for its welcoming country hospitality and still has significant growth capacity to accommodate new male, female and junior members interested in playing socially or competitively. There is currently no nomination fee. Anyone taking up the $2,244 offer will enjoy full gold membership from the day they sign up until October 31, 2022 and avoid anticipated annual fee increases in the meantime. The 2019/2020 full gold membership fee will be $748. President Dr Max Whitten said the offer represented both good value for money and an opportunity for members and newcomers to help the club fund mowing and maintenance fleet additions to service the expanded 18-hole course. “We will be bringing the last six of our 18 holes into play early in the new year and have committed to purchasing and leasing additional equipment so we can continue to deliver our high standard of course presentation,” Dr Whitten said. The current 12-hole, par-46 course incorporates an environmentally low-impact design by golf architect Graham Papworth that preserves and integrates existing wetlands and native flora. The completed 18-hole course will be comprised of two par 5s, ten par 4s and six par 3s, presenting a par 68 layout featuring unique revetted greenside bunkering, Tifdwarf Bermudagrass greens and kikuyu fairways within a peaceful, scenic hinterland setting.

Contributed by Norma McCormack What a great day we had when a party of us travelled to Caloundra for a day on the waters of Pumicestone Passage. Fortunately, some people had binoculars so we could watch the osprey feeding their chicks on a communication tower beside Tripcony Jetty where we went aboard the Tern of the Tide under the watchful eye of the skipper, Ken. The weather was perfect for cruising, though we agreed none of us would mind being caught in the rain. The bird life seemed to turn out for tourists. On the return journey from Pelican Waters Tavern, where we enjoyed lunch, we saw another osprey dive and catch a fair sized fish for its supper. Thank you Ken for your interesting commentary as we motored along, at times on the edge of quite shallow water on an exceptionally low tide. Our next Probus meeting will be on Wednesday, October 9 at 10am in the Glasshouse RSL rooms, 1 Reed Street. We are a funloving group of active retirees, so how about coming to join us? Flying foxes in trouble Many birds, mammals and reptiles visit our patch of native bush, especially at dry times of year, in search of food and water. But on a recent afternoon we had some unusual visitors – two flying foxes. We often see or hear bats feeding on our property at night but this behaviour of leaving their normal roost camp during the day in search of food trees is unusual. Flying foxes are fruit and nectar eaters but due to deforestation, development and severe drought there are not enough food sources in the wild for them. There are reports of many being found dead or malnourished. Flying foxes play a key role in coastal forest ecology, cross-pollinating many native trees and shrubs, including tall forest trees. Almost all hardwood species need flying foxes for pollination. Their flowers are only receptive to pollination at night, so are not fertilised by the daytime activity of birds and bees. Flying foxes fly great distances each night, with a single animal estimated to disperse up to 3,000 seeds a night. With increasing urbanisation, more man-made hazards like barbed wire, power lines, domestic animals, cars and roads, and increasing heat events, numbers of these amazing animals are declining at an alarming rate. Loss of flying foxes will have catastrophic consequences for many natives, including tree-dwelling animals like koalas. If a bat appears injured or sick and is failing to leave your property at night, do not touch it. Call either Bats Queensland or your local wildlife care organisation. You Said It Water shortage

It is now quite obvious to me that no one in the GC&M News readership area is interested in the water shortage in Australia. My letters have generated not one comment or suggestion, and that includes our federal member who knows about the problem. The people of the outback are struggling, as are the stock and animals out there. I have no idea what will happen when the bushfires start out there as I don’t think the state or federal members will be able to get enough water tankers to carry the much needed water or, for that matter, where will they get it from? Certainly not out of the rivers, dams or lakes. Well the time has come for action. I watched Channel 7 and they were shocked at the Barrier Reef and the odd shark that had been killed. Not a single worry or concern about the wildlife dying for lack of water or the graziers’ stock. People around Maleny worry about the odd wallaby being knocked over when they jump out in front of cars but what about the animals dying because of the shortage and lack of water in the outback. That can be fixed. Our Prime Minister loves giving our money away to other countries, bugger Australia and the Australians who have no water or the animals of Australia dying because of the lack of water. When are our governments, be it federal of state, going to wake up? I certainly have heard nothing from Andrew Wallace or Andrew Powell and they are our elected so-called politicians who are supposed to care and get things done and want our support. Well wake up and get your bums into gear, open your mouths and start being heard. Australia needs you. Brian Stallworthy Glass House Mountains

Re: Quarry expansion

I totally agree with VM Smith’s letter (GC&M News, September 25) re opposing the quarry extension proposal. Having lived here for almost 20 years, I’ve seen the increase in quarry truck movements impacting on this town. Getting in and out of town at peak times is a joke, often with multiple quarry trucks backed up at the intersection. It will be far worse with more trucks.

Coonowrin Road is a busy road. With three new housing estates on it there will be many more residents’ cars daily. Do we really want to add more quarry trucks to that scenario? It’s a high risk area past our state school. We don’t need more trucks rumbling through. Yes, we have flashing lights to show the 40km times, but what if a local child is injured, or worse? Has anyone apart from me noticed there is only one main access road in and out of town? All quarry trucks should be restricted through our town and redirected onto Steve Irwin Way via Barrs Road. Yes, I know there is a railway crossing there. Perhaps a rail overpass could be constructed there too. It would be costly but with all the extra rates revenue from the new housing estates perhaps council should contribute? And the quarry too. Let’s not forget our existing rail overpass is deteriorating and badly in need of maintenance, which evidently did not happen. How much damage is caused by all the heavy trucks back and forth over that bridge? Glass House is no longer a small town. It’s growing rapidly and as a priority the council should ensure infrastructure is in place to safely support the growing population. Our iconic mountains are heritage listed but unbelievably the council allows daily blasting at the nearby quarry site! It’s only a matter of time until Mount Coonowrin crumbles. It’s already listed as unstable. I wonder if the explosions might have something to do with that. I urge all residents to contact Andrew Powell and Cr Rick Baberowski today. Re:Reader feedback

The reader feedback included in GC&M News in the September 11 edition on electromagnetic (EM) fields and Dr Karl was interesting. The writer may not be aware but research on the effects of some EM transmissions - our mobile phones, microwave ovens, Wi-Fi and baby monitors (all on microwave frequencies) - goes back years. The use of the phrase "baseless hysteria" is of concern as there are pages and pages of peerreviewed research done over the past decade and more on the health effects of EM fields. One site I refer the reader to is https://ehtrust.org/ in the USA, another is the ORSAA website

(www.orsaa.org) run by a number of scientists in Australia. It’s the Oceania Radiofrequency Scientific Advisory Association Inc. You can read dozens of papers on the health effects of exposure to EM radiation. Dr Karl, meanwhile, lauded as a science icon I admit, has done a disservice in his ABC piece as his statements are basically out of date. ARPANSA (the Australian radiation agency), which he relies on, has not updated its safe radiation standards since 2002 yet we've had massive advances in technology of personal transmission devices since then. Dr Karl stated that radiofrequency radiation (RF) cannot damage DNA. However, it’s documented in over 200 peer-reviewed scientific papers that RF can cause oxidative stress which in turn can most definitely cause DNA damage. He also ignored the extensive 2012 BioInitiative Report. A new update from the BioInitiative Working Group (2017) shows evidence has strengthened for brain cancers related to mobile phone use. The group has released an update analysing scientific results of case-control studies published 2010-2017 on cancers of the brain (gliomas). Earlier papers on health effects of RF go as far back as 1976 when the US military looked at longer term exposure to microwave equipment among military personnel. None of this concern over EM radiation health issues is new. Richard Giles Conondale

Our roads are dangerous

Sadly, two recent accidents on Old Gympie Road and Steve Irwin Way show how dangerous these roads are for pedestrians and cyclists. With speeds averaging 80km an hour and with inconsistently wide shoulders, the threat to nonmotorists is obvious. A safe pedestrian/cycle path is needed to join the towns of Beerburum, Glass House Mountains, Beerwah, Landsborough and Mooloolah Valley. A path running alongside Steve Irwin Way would be ideal as it relatively flat and direct. Given the increasing populations in these areas, I call on the Sunshine Coast Council to investigate, plan and build such a facility. Hans Dauncey Glass House Mountains

Hive of exciting activity Glasshouse Mountains Early Education Centre has been a hive of exciting activity lately with the centre recently hosting an open day, new programs in the pipeline, new community initiatives and a brand new yard renovation. Centre director Dee Shaw said she was excited to be developing some new community partnerships and programs, and that both the staff and children were looking forward to a revamped outdoor play space. “We are full steam ahead with our yard renovation as we move to bring nature back into our outdoor play and learning space,” Dee said. “Outdoor exploration and play is an important part of our daily focus so we are all looking forward to seeing the end results of our fantastic yard makeover.” Recently the centre welcomed local families to come and find out more about what is on offer for those considering enrolling their child in one of the early learning classrooms. Dee said it was a great day and a wonderful opportunity to showcase the centre to the wider community.

Feedback from parents and carers is that they love the centre’s commitment to providing an immersive, interactive and engaging approach to early childhood learning. The centre prides itself on providing an engaging learning journey that supports the holistic and scaffolding approach to learning. Some of the benefits of enrolling at Glasshouse Early Learning Centre include flexibility with hours for busy families from 6.30am–6.30pm, the promotion of healthy eating choices and habits with healthy meals provided as part of the daily fees, a dedicated centre bus service and tailored physical education, language and music programs. The centre has a strong focus on STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) activities as well as plenty of nature inspired play. Some new initiatives at the centre include a community clothing swap and plans for a book swap where children will also be asked to make a small gold coin donation to help support a remote Indigenous school community to buy resources. Dee said the clothing swap corner had been well received and was a great way to help families as well as aligning well with the centre’s sustainability goals.

Dee is also finalising the new weekly swimming program with local operators and hopes to be able to offer the program to families in the coming weeks. The centre will provide transport and supervision of children to and from the pool. Dee said they were working hard on getting this up and running. Glasshouse Mountains Early Education Centre has a wide range of programs for all ages, from babies through to school-age, including their school vacation care program that runs Monday-Friday during the school holidays. The centre prides itself on offering a quality-driven kindergarten program to help children to be school ready. With the added convenience of providing long day care hours if required, both working and at-home parents may be eligible for the government funded kindergarten program subsidy offered through the centre. Eudlo Music Nights, October 12-13 It’s music festival season again and by the time you have read this we will have enjoyed the Maleny, Neurum and Mitchell Creek festivals and Caloundra will be on the horizon. But it is the modest festival in the village of Eudlo that I’m going to present. The event itself lasts just over a day, with a 12noon Saturday start and 2pm Sunday finish, but it is chock-a-block with entertainment and activities featuring two music stages, a workshop space and a lovely big fire Saturday night and, of course, a sleepover goes without saying! Everyone appreciates the small friendly festival feel, the fantastic musicians, the home cooking and the family and pet friendly activities with overnight camping. This will be the fourth Eudlo Music Nights and promotional clips of the past events can be found online - search the event name on Google and YouTube. The almost 30 acts confirmed for this month’s festival include Cigány Weaver, Louise King, Cloudstreet, Red Crow, Tin Star, Out of Abingdon, the Dave Orr Band, Emily Maguire, the Dennis Sisters, the Rumbrellas, Gypsy Rumble, Rob Longstaff, Ian B MacLeod, Blackall Blues, Peter Harvey, Ian Ross Williams, Deni Chapple and Brendan the Mindfulness Poet, who will run our Poet’s Breakfast. Brownie and I recently had dinner at Beerwah’s Baan Thai and judging by the number of locals dropping in and out of the restaurant, take away Thai meals are really popular. However, for me freshly made and served Thai food straight to the table is definitely the best way to have it. As lovers of Thai food we tend to stick to our favourite menu items of tom yum soup, red duck curry and chicken and cashew stir fry, which we always enjoy at Baan Thai. However, with the weather heating up we decided to go for some lighter options so started by sharing a mixed entrée, followed by a slightly healthy option of a larb salad, and then the more indulgent deep fried prawns served with their special tamarind sauce, which were all delicious. One of the other advantages of dining in is that you get to order from their extensive bar, which is sure to impress even the most discerning customer. The team at Baan Thai are really looking forward to being a part of their first Street Party, to be held in Simpson Street on Friday, October 18, and are busy working on a menu to serve from their street stall. They are encouraging locals who want to dine in and enjoy their licenced premises on the night to make sure they book a table early to avoid missing out.

Peachester celebrations

On Saturday, October 26, everyone is invited to join the Peachester community in celebrating the 130th anniversary of the Peachester Community Hall from 10am. There will be historical displays, veteran cars, musical entertainment, pioneer bush crafts, a wood chopping demonstration and food and drinks for sale. The official opening of the important Peachester Heritage Centre will take place at 11am. Period costume for any period since 1889 will be welcome, with prizes for the best outfits.

Christmas carols choir

Glasshouse Country community carols organisers are calling for local singers to join the choir for rehearsals leading up to the December 14 event at the Beerwah Sportsgrounds. There will be six rehearsals and the community choir will be one of three choirs to perform on the night. Entertainment starts at 4.30pm with musicians and dance, then the carols stage show starts at 6.30pm. The carols are organised by the Landsborough School of the Arts Memorial Hall and proudly sponsored by council. State Member for Caloundra The humble meat pie, a beloved symbol of Australian life, conjures images of summers at the beach, Sunday afternoons with the family, road trips, postgame celebrations and memories of simpler times. Landsborough locals Tim and Paula Watson continue to carry on the Aussie tradition of pies and other delicious baked goods through the iconic Buck’s Bakery, which they have owned since 2013. Buck’s Bakery has existed in Landsborough since the 1980s and while it has seen many different owners over the years, the name has never changed. I recently spoke with Tim about the growth of the bakery since he and Paula took over, and how it has contributed to the town of Landsborough becoming a popular destination for visitors from across Australia and the world. “After selling the local IGA, we decided to buy the bakery. It went through a few owners over the years but at the time we took over it was nearly gone. So we said – if we’re going to do this, we have to do it right. We have to make it bigger and better,” Tim said. “We built an extension, so today’s bakery has a much bigger footprint than the original shop. We can now seat 60 people and we make roughly 1,200 pies every week. The bakery has become extremely popular with cyclists over the years and every Thursday and Saturday we have big groups stopping in after their ride. “Our most popular pie would have to be the chunky steak, but we also sell a lot of the curry scallop, bacon, steak and cheese, and the Ned Kelly, which is a breakfast pie of meat, egg and cheese on top. Customers can also enjoy a full range of pastries including our signature sourdough that is made from an 18-year-old sourdough culture. “People from all over Australia have heard of us and they come to Landsborough for our pies and pastries. We even have an American couple that come back to visit every year. It’s incredible because we’ve never advertised. It is only word of mouth that brings people here. “I think it’s a simple recipe – we have great staff, clean facilities and we sell good, hot, fresh pies and we keep the prices reasonable,” Tim said. Buck’s Bakery is another great hinterland success story. Congratulations to the Watsons on reviving this charming piece of Landsborough history and putting their stamp on the great Aussie pie.

Gardeners know that trying to grow plants way outside their preferred climatic zone is fraught with disaster. Take the peony, for example. It’s a cold climate flowerer and trying to grow it here in spring would be plain crazy. Not anymore, thanks to a Sunshine Coast University researcher. University of the Sunshine Coast science graduate Krista Bogiatzis (pictured) has found a way of replicating perfect winter conditions to allow peonies to bloom in Queensland, where subtropical temperatures have caused many previous attempts to fail. Ms Bogiatzis said the discovery meant Queensland could one day supply spring blooms for Australia’s wedding season and potentially offer a product to the global flower market outside of its usual season. Growing the blooms in Australia also avoids the fumigation process required to import flowers and damage that can occur in transit. Ms Bogiatzis said she has been able to replicate the conditions required to trigger the peony’s spring bloom. “Peonies only grow in cold climates with cold winters and they need a long cold snap to break them out of their dormancy but we just don’t get those conditions here,” she said. “In a greenhouse at the University of the Sunshine Coast, we were able to fine tune what

these peonies need in terms of temperature, conditions and nutrients, to give them the perfect winter environment. “We also know how to time it perfectly so that when they are ready to bloom, they think it is spring.” Mrs Bogiatzis, who began the research in 2015 as a Bachelor of Science (biology) student, said she hoped to eventually offer locally grown peonies to the subtropical Australian market, which largely relies on costly imports from France, New Zealand and southern Australia. “The buds are cut while they are still tightly closed and they are kept almost frozen in transit. Because they can be damaged like anything transported over long distances, the expenses involved make it sometimes unaffordable for people to buy imported peonies,” she said.

Have you heard of galangal? If you haven’t, it’s a type of Thai ginger that would be a great perennial addition to your edible garden. Being hardy, easy to grow and care for, and suited to a sub-tropical climate, galangal is perfect for our locality and is attractive as well, which is also a bonus as a garden plant. Like normal edible ginger, you use the underground rhizome as a spicy flavour in cooking but unlike normal ginger this plant grows to over two metres. You start growing galangal from a rhizome cutting taken from someone’s existing clump or by buying a small pot at a nursery. Like all ginger plants – edible or flowering – they really like a rich soil, so make sure you dig through compost and animal manures to prepare the spot. Pick somewhere that gets some sun with some shade as well – dappled sun is perfect. It will grow in full sun but you’ll find the leaves will suffer sun damage. Leave it plenty of space to grow as it is a clumping plant but it is a slow clumper, so it won’t take over. To harvest galangal you’ll need to dig out some of the outer plants, so give yourself space around the plant to manoeuvre with a mattock and spade. Although galangal is drought tolerant, you’ll end up with softer young rhizomes if it gets a regular drink. Feed it every other month with a good quality plant food (whatever you prefer). As they grow, they also produce flowers that can be cut and displayed inside, although they’re not really showy like other ginger flowers. I have my clump growing on the side boundary hiding the neighbour’s water tanks and shed from our view. It’s very good as a screening plant. Alternatively, grow it in a large pot or container but make sure it’s large so that you can get access to the side shoots when you want to harvest some. One great aspect is that it’s pest free. I’ve never had anything try to eat it or infest it in the ten years that it’s been growing in my patch. Galangal is typically used in stir-fries and Asian styled soups, and it is a staple ingredient when making your own Thai curry pastes too. It has a spicy flavour, a bit of a cross between ginger and pepper. You need to use the youngest, freshest rhizomes as the older ones tend to be tough and fibrous. The older leaves do get a bit scrappy looking, as do they when the weather gets cold. You can either ignore them or trim them out if you’re a neater gardener than me. In Ayurveda and traditional Chinese medicines galangal has been used to treat colds, stomach ache, inflammation, diabetes, ulcers, nausea, diarrhoea, eczema and various other acute and chronic conditions. If you want an easy to grow edible ginger, galangal is a great addition to anyone’s garden.

Welsh singing festival The Welsh Society of the Sunshine Coast is hosting its annual Festival of Music or Cymanfa Ganu on Sunday, October 13 from 1.30pm at the Queen Street Uniting Church in Caloundra. It is a spectacular musical tribute featuring traditional Welsh hymns and Welsh-inspired music, with song sheets in both Welsh and English as well as unique baroque instrumentals. The talented performers on the day include Maleny’s famed tenor and harpist Kim Kirkman, stunning soprano Elisabeth Gaedtke, the Buderim Men’s Choir, other choirs and fabulous local harpsichordist Janet Brewer. In the past few years more than 100 have attended the festival. A great afternoon tea is thrown in for good measure on the day. Tickets are $15, with under 18s free and can be purchased at the door. Only two teams with two wins, which made the prize money easy. Winners were Errol, Richard and Tony Verdonck with two wins + 30 margin. Thanks to everyone who supported and helped out over the past six months. For any club members or players participating in our spring carnival, Club Glass House will be open for a yummy full buffet style breakfast on Sunday, October 27, which is the second morning of the carnival. If you would like to book in let me know. The club will be open from 7.45am. Cost is $17 per person. Our carnival kicks off at 9am so plenty of time to eat then get ready to play or those who might want to hang around and watch bowls for a while after brekky.

We hosted players from several other clubs, with players coming from as far away as Bundaberg, for our Friendship Day on Thursday, September 19. It was a successful event with great playing conditions and games were conducted in a good spirit in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. The Caloundra group visited on Friday, September 20 and were treated to a similar day. There are some very promising golf croquet players in this group. After training on Saturday, September 21 a group of about 20 Baby Boomers played several rounds of golf croquet on the lawn. For many this was their first attempt at play and there was some real talent showing amongst the fun and games. Pictured are Helen Uhlmann, Annette Sinclair and Kaye Herron Stuart from the Baby Boomers group, under instruction of Priscilla Vickers (second left), considering ways of approaching their second game of golf croquet. Donny Griffiths, Vince Carbery and Stuart Craig played a game of golf croquet on Sunday, September 22, which resulted in Donny and Vince winning by a very fine margin 7–6. In the second game they were joined by Isabella Bammert resulting in a 7–6 win to Donny and Isabella. Coaching for beginners and others is available on the laid-back lawns at the bottom of the Maleny Showgrounds from 8-10am on Saturdays. These are popular sessions in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere.
