SUNSHINE Coast Council recently hosted its annual citizen of the year awards for those Mayor Cr Mark Jamieson describes as our everyday heroes. See coverage on pages 4-5. Not surprisingly, quite a few of those recognised by these awards work with or are connected to the many wonderful local community groups in our towns. Well, it isn’t surprising to me and it made me smile to know that nearly all of the everyday heroes we have showcased in this week’s edition have regularly featured on our pages. Quite a few of them have donned our front cover, including our last edition. These days we live in a digital/ social media world filled with people who are called influencers or brand

Tourist drive tree clearing explained SINCE before Christmas, vegetation along the railway line side of Steve Irwin Way from Beerwah to Landsborough has been progressively cleared. For a distance of about 20m oďŹ€ the roadside, all the trees and shrubs have been felled and mulched in an operation that has locals asking â€œâ€Ś what is it all about?â€? The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) has conďŹ rmed that the work is the start of the previously announced $18 million project aimed to improve safety along Steve Irwin Way. When announced last October, the funding, which is part of a $415 million state and federal economic stimulus program, was to improve road safety on Steve Irwin Way from Beerburrum to Palmview, with Beerwah to Landsborough given priority. A TMR spokesperson said this section of Steve Irwin Way had experienced increased traďŹ€ic growth over the years and this project aimed to reduce the potential for head-on, rear-end and run-oďŹ€ crashes. â€œWe appreciate the patience of residents, businesses and motorists during the works. Vegetation clearing

is being undertaken to make it easier for project contractors to start main construction later this year,â€? the spokesperson said. â€œThe western roadside was cleared as the reserve is wider, allowing the proposed widening to occur on this side to accommodate the wide centre line treatment, wider shoulders, intersection modiďŹ cations and an appropriate clear zone.â€? The cleared vegetation has generally been mulched and spread on site to assist with weed maintenance, with some larger logs given to Australia Zoo. According to TMR, key features of the safety improvement will include: â€˘ Road widening from north of Foley Road, Beerwah to Mellum Creek Bridge, Landsborough. â€˘ Installing a wide centre line to provide additional separation between vehicles travelling in opposite directions. â€˘ Shoulder widening. â€˘ Installing dedicated right-turn lanes between the Irwin Road and Isambert Road intersections, where not already installed. â€˘ Extending and replacing culverts.

â€˘ Safety barrier installations at identiďŹ ed locations. â€œWe will continue to speak with stakeholders as the project progresses,â€? the spokesperson said.

Thanks to our everyday heroes AT a special ceremony on January 22, attended by more than 250 dignitaries, nominees and their guests at the Events Centre Caloundra, Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson said the annual Sunshine Coast Australia Day Awards highlighted the outstanding work of so many community-focussed citizens and organisations. “2020 was a year that will never be forgotten for so many reasons but particularly because we saw our residents come together to support each other like never before,” Mr Jamieson said.

“The nominees for the Sunshine Coast Australia Day Awards are a very special group and this is our chance to say thank you. “Their stories highlight just how fortunate we are to have so many everyday heroes amongst us. All of our award recipients and nominees are truly deserving of these accolades.” In the hotly contested category of Senior Citizen of the Year with 21 amazing nominees, the winner was Division 5 resident Carmel Crouch of Woombye. Carmel’s dedication to providing opportunities for people with a disability began more than 45 years ago when she adopted a son with disabilities. As he grew up Carmel felt compelled to create opportunities for him just like the ones her other two children (who did not have disabilities) had the chance to experience. Carmel took a leading role to develop supported training and employment programs. The organisation STEPS Group Australia was born and Carmel has been a key driver in her voluntary role as chair and president for 33 years. Through her tireless work Carmel has garnered the support of local business that have donated to the development of classrooms, living facilities and educational programs, and have helped to create a brighter future for people with a disability.

Peachester Rural Fire Brigade (PRFB) officer Kevin Wrayford has been an active member of the brigade as well as a member of the Peachester Hall Committee, Peachester History Committee, Beerwah Charity Sports Day Committee, Peachester Neighbourhood Watch and Hinterland Live Music Club. Under Kevin’s stewardship the PRFB has grown to be a well-trained, well-equipped unit. David Gower is also an active rural firie, joining the Glass House brigade in 1994. He is a respected officer, leader and mentor of all members. His level of knowledge is shared with other members at every opportunity, passing on the reins to the next generation. Pat Habner, chairperson for the Blackall Range Care Group, was heavily involved with the CEO and the management team to navigate through the wide range of issues that arose throughout 2020. Pat went beyond the boundaries of chairperson by giving unprecedented support to all across the Range Care operations and to the board.

Pat also assisted with the recruitment of a new CEO, followed through on ongoing issues raised by the Royal Commission into Aged Care, and implemented the relatively new aged care standards and their impact for the group on quality community care across the hinterland and coastal communities. Former Beerwah High School student Laree-Anne Gadenne, who featured on the cover of GC&M News on January 20, was a nominee in both the Citizen of the Year and Creative Award categories. Laree won several medals in dance and acting at the 2013 World Championships of Performing Arts held in Los Angeles. Since then she has travelled the world and landed supporting roles in ﬁlms in London and a dance scholarship in Los Angeles at the prestigious Millennium Dance Academy. She came back to the Sunshine Coast with her passion and skills in her crafts to help others. She has written, directed, produced and acted in a sitcom that has now taken to the world stage promoting the beauty of the Sunshine Coast and local actors, sound

engineers, video photographers and musicians. Laree has started three business platforms that create work on all levels. Current Beerwah High student Poppy Ives was a ﬁnalist in the awards for both Environment and Sustainability and the Young Citizen of the Year. Poppy was inspired by the work of the Tangaroa Blue Foundation to form her own monthly beach clean-up in 2017. Calling the group Visionary Ocean Warriors, Poppy’s focus was removing marine debris and protecting endangered marine life. Since the group’s inception, Poppy has shown commitment to the cause by monitoring the Golden Beach site each month, engaging volunteers and sorting the debris into the Australian Marine Debris Initiative. Poppy has entered 11,000 pieces of rubbish, totalling 183kg, into the database over the past three years. Poppy also spreads the message of refusing single use plastic. She has hand printed ‘plastic free sea’ t-shirts with her own design, using money from the sales to fundraise for Tangaroa Blue.

MALENY locals who know Norma McLeod won’t be surprised to learn that she received an Order of Australia Medal in the Governor-General’s Australia Day Honours List. Norma was recognised for her service and commitment to the community of Maleny, her volunteer eﬀorts at the Centre for Retirement Living (Blue Care), Maleny Show Society, Maleny Garden Club, Maleny Floral Art Group and the Maleny Soldiers Memorial Hospital. In 2018, Norma appeared on the cover of GC&M News when she received the Zonta Club of Maleny and the Blackall Range’s Women of Achievement Award. Norma has been a long-time member of the Maleny Garden Club, holding a number of committee positions before becoming a life member and worked tirelesslyy on the beautiful Walkk of Remembrance project at the Malenyy Hospital. Member for Glass House Andrew Powell ll said Norma’s service to Maleny had been astonishing. “It warms my heartt to see her recognised d in this way. Norma is truly a Maleny icon and we would be lost without her,” Mr Powell said.

Debut EP for Beerwah musician By Sonia Isaacs Clark WITH a distinctive sound that draws on multiple musical inﬂuences and styles, Beerwah musician Julian Munyard is keen to share his creative capacity with the world. Recently graduating from Glasshouse Christian College, the 17 year old has already notched up an impressive performance presence busking and playing at venues across the Sunshine Coast since the age of 10. He recently released his debut EP ‘Talk in Pictures’ and is now planning to spend his gap year concentrating on his music and pursuing gig opportunities, both as a solo artist and part of the duo Julian and Bakani with long-term school friend and fellow busker Bakani Kombani. Julian said his introduction to playing live kicked oﬀ at a relatively young age when he was encouraged to play guitar and sing at the local gigs put on by the Glasshouse Muso’s Club. Julian credits the musical mentorship of older local musicians, such as John Brown and Michael Whiticker, who supported his aspirations. Around this time Julian also started to busk regularly at Mooloolaba, building up a small following with his consistent presence. “Every weekend on Friday and Saturday nights my dad would drive me over to Mooloolaba Esplanade to set up, and I’d pull out my guitar around 6pm and busk for a couple of hours each week,” Julian said. “I think because I was so young the cute factor really worked initially. After my mate from school Bakani

joined me when he was 12, this became our regular busking stomping ground until we were around 16.” After four years of busking together at Mooloolaba the duo were keen to explore other opportunities and Julian started to door knock local restaurants, bars and cafés to get gigs and transition his focus to performing in venues and at events. “Regular busking for so many years was a great way to build my confidence and develop my live performance and musicianship skills,” he said. They focussed on covers but Julian also developed the confidence to write some of his own material. Julian said he started working on his EP in October 2019 at his small home-based studio, which was basically a desk in his room surrounded by his guitar, keyboard and computer. Initially he had spent time penning and working on a track ‘Treasure Chest’, which, once completed, inspired him to keep working on creating other songs. By May 2020, Julian had written, recorded and produced six songs to be released on his EP. At this point he decided to step it up and have it professionally produced. He sent it off to Sydney to be mixed and mastered with the final product ready for release at the end of last year. Describing his sound as a mix of styles including indie rock, new wave, alternative and laidback surf rock with the occasional nod to jazz and soul, Julian said he has been influenced by artists like David Bowie, Mac De Marco, and Sticky Fingers. His new release showcases his versatility as an

New face at Club Glass House CLUB Glass House recently welcomed Geoff Martin as the new secretary/manager at the popular Glass House Mountains community club. With more than 40 years of experience in the hospitality industry and 14 years of management expertise under his belt, Geoff said he was drawn to the position for numerous reasons. However, one of the key considerations was the genuine friendliness of the club members and staff, which was immediately apparent as soon as he walked through the doors. “When I saw this position advertised it seemed a perfect way to be closer to my family, who are based here on the Sunshine Coast, and to be involved in a unique and friendly club that had a really great feel about it, and that was ready to move to the next level of operation,” Geoff said. His most recent positions included management roles at the Yamba Golf Club and Club Lennox located at Lennox Heads, which he helped to successfully reopen after a period of closure.

Geoff said that before relocating to the Sunshine Coast he had actually retired, spending two years travelling before travel options became limited. “Honestly, I got bored sitting around at home and decided to see what industry opportunities were out there again. I’m looking forward to taking what we do well here at the club and doing more of it,” Geoff said. With this in mind, immediate plans include looking at ways to improve the dining experience by building on the club’s reputation for good quality food, improving the bar facilities and extending dining capacity. Geoff said he was excited about joining Club Glass House and was looking forward to the challenges ahead and getting to know the members and community. New premises for All About Autism LANDSBOROUGH-BASED education and support service All About Autism (AAA) featured in GC&M News last year when it was trying to find permanent premises after five years of operation. Just before our last edition in 2020 went to print, AAA director and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) teacher Lizzie Vaughan told us she was excited to advise the business would be taking over the historic bank building in Cribb Street Landsborough at the beginning of February. We caught up with Lizzie to find out more. Q: Give us a brief update of how this came about? We’ve been on the hunt for a year trying to find a suitable premises to keep us in the Glasshouse Country area. Every tip off I had was followed up and - finally - we managed to find that the old bank building, which has been used as the site office for the Cribb Street upgrade, would be vacant by the start of 2021. With the fenced outdoor space out the back and the quirky interior with a homely feel, we knew it would be perfect for our next step. Q: Your application is currently being finalised with Sunshine Coast Council. As an historic building did you have to meet additional requirements? Luckily, we are making no changes to the interior or exterior of the building,

so we are keeping all its historical character intact. We are working closely with the council to make sure the heritage space is protected and that everything is handled correctly to allow us to operate for the benefit of the kids and the local community. Q: How many classes will you be able to offer from the building and what do you love about securing this site for AAA? We will be able to have three sessions running simultaneously, with each group having four children maximum. It is going to be fantastic to be able to cater for 12 children a day, running Monday to Friday. As well as our learning and therapy spaces, we will have dedicated sensory and play spaces, as well as our fully fenced outside play area, which is so essential in teaching social skills and how to navigate the playground successfully for their transition back to school. Having permanent premises means we can offer a secure and consistent space, specially designed for the benefit of the kids. This will include chill out spaces, visuals and an organised space for optimal learning. We will be able to have our team working together in the one space and still be able to support the local Landsborough community. We will also have a base for workshops and information sessions later down the track.

Q: Tell us about some of the local support you have received? One of the reasons why I have been keen to stay in the local community is because of all the fantastic support I have received. The team at Morris House have been fantastic since we started using the CWA Hall in 2015, as well as the Girl Guides Boomjarril space. Jenny Broderick from Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce has been so supportive, as well as Judy Tomlinson from Celebrate Glasshouse, who has been on the lookout for us too. It has been a real local eﬀort for us to get to this point and we are so excited to move forward with it thanks to everyone’s help.

Landsborough free pantry INSPIRED by the idea of a free neighbourhood pantry service to assist others in need, Landsborough resident Shirley King decided to open one of her own outside her house. Shirley said she had seen the success of other free pantry services around the Sunshine Coast, including ones at Wurtulla, Sippy Downs and Maleny, and thought a similar setup would be of great beneﬁt for the local community. She said it would be available 24/7 for anyone in the community who might require additional food or items to get by. “Previously I have helped out at Morris House Neighbourhood Centre and noticed that people in the area were needing food vouchers and assistance,” Shirley said. “Also, through my involvement with a local group that assists with housing options for women over 55, I know a lot of people were doing it tough. “I thought if I could oﬀer some extra help for people in need to come by and grab what they required without feeling embarrassed that would be good. I’ve been a single mum and know what it can be like to struggle to feed your family.” Shirley said that since launching the initiative and putting the call out for donations she had a generous community response, with the pantry now packed with non-perishable foods and other items such as packet food, pastas, UHT milks and toiletries waiting for those who need it to come by and take items anytime. The bottom section holds books and DVDs, and Shirley is happy to take any new unwanted gifts to help brighten someone’s day.

After making initial enquires to Sunshine Coast Council about her idea, Shirley spoke with her neighbours and feels confident that she has addressed any potential safety concerns. To ensure the pantry is weatherproof Shirley has made it from an old fridge with shelves that have been glued in. She has put temporary measures in place to help stablise it. Wurtulla Free Pantry saw her Facebook post about the venture and offered assistance for a handyman to come and help secure the fridge, which Shirley is looking into. One opportunity is at the Bankfoot House Heritage Precinct in the Glass House Mountains where weekend visitor experience guides are needed. Sunshine Coast Council’s cultural heritage coordinator Peter Connell said volunteers didn’t need any speciﬁc skills, just an interest in history and people. “We give full on-the-job training, so just a desire to learn, enthusiasm and the ability to engage with others is all potential volunteers need,” Peter said. “We receive applications from university or TAFE students looking to further their careers or research studies, retirees wanting to connect with and help the community, and those with a passion for heritage. “Volunteers become part of an amazing network and receive free workshops, annual bus trips and many other opportunities to learn and participate in our heritage.” Volunteers can choose from one of the many exciting roles in museums and heritage sites on the Sunshine Coast including event assistant, tour guide, education program guide, researcher, collections care assistant and data entry assistant. Volunteers at Bankfoot House can expect to do a weekend shift at least once a month. HI THERE Zumba Gold is a little different to normal “flat-out” Zumba. As most of us mature in age, it does not mean that we do not want to keep active! Do not be mis-led into thinking that in a Zumba Gold class you will not sweat! You will! As a slightly more mature age woman, I have designed these classes around a solid workout, looking after the joints, (which is what Zumba Gold is all about), and fun! As a direct result of classes I have attended in the past, too often I look around the room, and instead of people actually enjoying the class, they have a worried look on their face, trying to get the steps right! My classes are unique in the fact that I (the qualified instructor!) will make mistakes at times, and I make no apology for this! Hey, if you go home with a smile on your face, and you have had a giggle with me, my mission for this class has been accomplished! Considering the downturn our world has suffered in recent times, I do believe we need to laugh and have fun more!

MALENY Lane, along with Cupid’s representative Debs Swain, will host regular singles nights for over 40s on the third Saturday of the month from 6–9.30pm, starting on February 20. Debs hopes to create a safe environment for over 40s singles to meet new friends and mingle each month in a singles club-like environment on their own or with other single friends. Maleny Lane is a small rustic food alley filled with delicious gourmet street food from around the world right in the heart of the main street of Maleny. Each month will be themed or have a different flavour with live music, icebreaker games, introductions, speed dating nights and prizes. Drinks are available or you can BYO. PUBLIC nominations are now open for the Fisher Community Awards organised by the federal Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace. This year’s double awards ceremony will recognise winners from 2019/20 as well as the past year following the cancellation of the 2020 awards ceremony. Mr Wallace said the awards this year would recognise organisations and individuals who have made a difference through the COVID-19 pandemic in the fields of education, employment and retirement. “Over the past 12 months we have needed the resilience, the compassion and the energy of our volunteers and community leaders more than ever,” he said. The winners in each category will be selected from the public’s nominations by representatives of the Fisher Youth Council, Business Council and Seniors Council, which are consultation groups drawn from local residents and set up by Mr Wallace. WHEN entertaining, there are now many alternative disposable plates and cutlery that won’t be hanging around in our landﬁll for 500 years like ones made from plastic. Some possibilities to check out are dishes and cutlery made from sugarcane pulp, bamboo, plant starch, palm leaves and paper.

Of course, using regular plates and cutlery that can be washed is the most sustainable option of all.

New database for Landsborough Museum THANKS to a grant from the Sunshine Coast Council, the Landsborough Museum is currently working to input data into a new database and cataloguing system called eHive. This eHive system is well supported and used internationally by small to large museums. It is a web-based database so the public will be able to access it when most of the object collection and library data is in the system. If you know anyone interested in this type of work the museum would appreciate assistance from extra

Dancing for fun and fitness SCOTTISH Country Dancing will recommence in Maleny on Monday, February 8 at the Maleny RSL Hall. For those not aware of country dancing, it is not highland dancing but is danced in sets similar to bush dances and a partner is not required. Classes will be held on a Monday night from 7-9pm and the cost is $5, with a

Energy rebates for concession card holders CONCESSION card holders are being encouraged to check with their energy retailers if they are eligible to receive electricity and gas rebates worth up to $416 a year. The rebates provide welcome additional assistance towards the cost of living. Potentially, there are thousands of eligible households not taking advantage of the assistance. The system was introduced to support pensioners, seniors and veterans, as well as healthcare card holders and asylum seekers. Queensland Minister for Energy, Renewables and Hydrogen Mick de Brenni said the past year had been tough for everyone, so he urged all concession card holders to contact their electricity retailer. “Just have your concession card details on hand and, if you are eligible,

you’ll be able to start accessing the rebate as a credit on your account,” Mr de Brenni said. Concession card status is private information so electricity providers won’t automatically be aware of a customers’ eligibility. It is important to reach out directly to access the ongoing assistance. Queensland pensioners, seniors and veterans could also be eligible for an annual gas rebate of $74.92 through the government’s reticulated natural gas rebate scheme and should check directly with their gas retailer. Volunteering with the Rural Fire Brigade By Sonia Isaacs Clark

IN this edition we chat with Scot Perrie, the first officer at Maleny and District Brigade, Rural Fire Service (RFS) Queensland. Scot has been involved with the RFS for more than ten years and said being part of the organisation was like belonging to an extended family who all looked out for each other. He said the work often brought out the very best in people, sometimes in tough situations, and he strongly encouraged those with a willingness to assist their local community to consider joining. Q: Why should people consider joining their local RFS brigade? It is a great way to give back to the community and it gives you a real sense of civic duty to support the greater good. There is the opportunity to learn new skills that extend beyond firefighting and it is also a great way to network within the local community. Belonging to the brigade gives you the opportunity work with people you may not normally meet. Our brigade members come from a range of professions including doctors, farmers, engineers and painters and are aged from 18 to 74 years. It also allows for new experiences, not just fighting fires, as we assist the Queensland Ambulance Service, Queensland Fire and Rescue Service (QFES) and State Emergency Service.

We do storm damage, community engagement and education, and also assist with recovering patients for other services. We can deploy intrastate and interstate to assist our colleagues in times of need. Q: What is involved in volunteering? Generally, two or three hours of training at the brigade per fortnight (depending on what brigade you are with) and volunteers undertake their firefighter minimum skills course, which is done over a six-week period at two hours a week and includes all the basic skills on fire behaviour, safety and communications. Volunteers also participate in brigade activities, where they can give as little or as much time as they want. It’s important to note that there are both operational (active firefighters) and support (community education, logistics, communication and maintenance/stores) roles available, and there is no cost to the member as all uniforms, equipment and training is provided free of charge. Q: What training opportunities are there? We offer firefighter minimum skills combined with respond to isolated/remote structures, which give a Certificate II in Public Safety (Firefighting). As you progress there are many more courses you can take including training in firefighter advanced skills, first aid, crew leader, officer training, chainsaw use, 4WD, incident management, airbase operator and public information officer. There are training opportunities available that can provide additional knowledge and skills for everyday life.

Q: How can people get involved? Local brigades include Maleny, Landsborough, Beerwah, Glass House Mountains, Peachester, Crystal Waters, Conondale and Eudlo. A new year brings new enthusiasm and the Glass House Mountains Probus Club would love to encourage other active retirees to join us and share their ideas for exciting things for us to do and to learn about. We are pleased to be inducting two new members and welcoming a guest speaker at our first club meeting for 2021 at 10am on Wednesday, February 10 at the Glass House RSL Hall. Our first outing for 2021 will be a movie morning with lunch to follow at Caloundra. Our book group is already back in action, and our craft group and the mah-jongg/canasta group are about to get under way again. Our lunch group will also kick off in February. The directory is one of the main fundraisers for the club, supporting projects such as purchasing birthing kits for developing countries and preparing refuge packs for various women’s shelters on the Sunshine Coast. If you have seen the directory you will recognise the colourful rooster featured on the cover, which was painted by Dorothy Peall, a member of the Blackall Range Visual Artists for the past 12 years. Originally Dorothy was commission to create a work of a single rooster with attitude for a friend as a Christmas gift. Dorothy said commissions were very daunting but she was “always surprised at what I am able to push myself to create (artists are our worst critics) and the wonderful reaction of the person who ordered it”. YOU First Nationsâ€™ remembrance day ON January 26 I attended a remembrance ceremony at the RSL Hall in Maleny. What was it in remembrance of? Those ďŹ rst and original inhabitants of this land and country Australia, who had very sophisticated land management and food supply systems across the country. Read Bruce Pascoeâ€™s book â€˜Dark Emuâ€™ to grasp the scope of their developed culture. Rather than the First Fleet of 1,500 men, women, children and military, including 560 convicts, we chose to acknowledge the original inhabitants who we now know fought and died for their country, one they had continuously inhabited for 60,000 plus years. There were 200-250 people, locals from Maleny and surrounding areas acknowledging First Nations. Australia Day is also known as Invasion Day as the original people lost their land, their food sources, their culture and their language. A series of massacres occurred and resistance wars were fought against white settlement. Thousands lost their lives to guns and poisons. At the remembrance ceremony I heard that we need a new history of our country that records the truth of what happened to the original peoples so we can go forward and build on reconciliation. Read the local award-winning book â€˜Warriorâ€™ by Libby Connors about local South East Queensland Aboriginal leader and lawman Dundalli (18201855). It will tell you a story you may not have heard about before on Aboriginal interaction with white settlement right here in SE Queensland and its consequences. Pre-settlement in this area had a very rich regional economy and exquisite natural features

and resources. Much was lost due to expansionist settlements reaching into Aboriginal lands. Today the best you can do is to learn about what was here before and acknowledge the lost land and people. Then we can go on to move forward to a better joint future. Richard Giles Conondale

Support Local Businesses I would like to clarify the misconception that I am not a supporter of â€œshop localâ€? (GC&M News, December 21). For many years we have been involved in retail in our community, including 31 years in the Glass House Mountains Post OďŹ€ice. We always shop locally where possible, as do most residents of the hinterland townships. I did mention in my letter (GC&M News, December 9) that the Caloundra South shopping complex would be able to provide goods and services that are not available locally in the hinterland townships. One could wonder whether Coles may have led the community astray somewhat with talk of hardware/ nursery, bulky goods, white goods, etc and by comparing the proposed Beerwah Homemaker Centre with the Homemaker centres in Maroochydore and Kawana. Yes, it would be most convenient to have a big comprehensive homemaker centre in Beerwah but it is unrealistic given the population of the hinterland and that such centres favour locations of high density housing development. In a recent response to questions from the community, the Coles Group actually ruled out Bunnings or Spotlight stores in their development. Australia wide, bulky goods outlets are small in number. For example, The

Good Guys has 100 stores, Early Settler has 54 in Australia and New Zealand, Harvey Norman has 193 and JB Hi-Fi has 198. Therefore, I believe that there is very little chance of attracting any such outlets to Beerwah. Hence my comment that locals could shop for these goods at the Caloundra South shopping centre. Queuing at QML I am disappointed with the lack of common courtesy and inconsiderate attitude of some people. On Monday, January 25 I went for a blood test at QML at the Coral Street Medical Centre. I am an insulindependent diabetic who had to go for a fasting blood test. Fasting tests are always a problem for me because my blood sugar levels (BSL) are generally low before breakfast and I canâ€™t eat before the test.

People were gathering as normal and I have always found that people sort themselves out in order of arrival. On this occasion a woman arrived later - she may have been number ďŹ ve or six in order of arrival. She stood right in front of the door and when the QML lady opened the door she marched straight in ahead of earlier arrivals to get the number one ticket. Not wanting to make an issue of it, I ended with ticket number four, which put me back 45 minutes. As a result my BSL was getting critically low before I had my test. THE latest round of the Queensland Government’s FairPlay vouchers are now open, with eligible families of children aged 5-17 years able to apply. As thousands of Queensland kids are about to line up for their favourite sport or activity, for low-income families having access to the $150 voucher could be a huge help. Minister for Sport Stirling Hinchliffe said the government was investing $7.5 million to help pay club registration fees for up to 50,000 young Queenslanders from low-income families. “The Palaszczuk government’s FairPlay vouchers could be the difference for many kids between getting fit and active or spending the season on the couch,” Mr Hinchliffe said. “FairPlay reduces one of the barriers standing between some young Queenslanders making the team - the cost of joining a club.” Parents or guardians should have a valid health care card or pensioner

THE Beerwah Swim Club believes last year was the first time that the club had teams competing in relays at the Queensland Swimming Championships. GC&M News was told that while the club’s records don’t date back very far, it was definitely the first time that the small club’s current members can remember. The Beerwah Splash club is a closeknit small crew, which means there are rarely four boys or girls in the different age groups to make up a relay team. However, for this event six girls came together to form two relay teams. The most recently completed project was the long overdue job of replacing the fencing surrounding the bocce bowls area that had become unsafe, rusted and rickety. It is now new, very stable and safe. Live performance and playing in a band today LIKE many musicians, I enjoy most of my playing at home in the privacy of my studio space these days. It is not just COVID that has reduced public performance - there are simply fewer opportunities than there were 30 or 40 years ago. That, of course, is only of academic interest. Should it matter that music making is becoming more of a private passion? We have the advantage today of the internet and the endless resources it provides and live streaming is improving in quality. Why not let musicians fade away to the privacy of their own space? Well, for a start, live performing is an individual need. Some musicians must play in a front of an audience and will do almost anything to perform publicly. There is also the strong argument that as well as entertaining, live performance is therapeutic for both the giver and receiver. Taking the argument that it is good for musicians to share their music making, how can they best do it? Again, it is an individual thing. I know of some players who are conﬁrmed soloists, but most enjoy performing with others. Group ensembles such as choirs and ukulele orchestras suit some but many enjoy a smaller band format of one sort or another. Many of us have played in bands and the experience can be both good and bad. In a typical four-piece with

vocal, drums, lead and bass guitar, each member is integral to the sound and if one falls out with the others or moves away or changes musical direction, or simply gets frustrated with the weekly rehearsal, then there is a hole in the band and a new player has to be found and has a repertoire to learn. How many times have I heard the story of an essential member leaving the band in the lurch? A friend related that his Police tribute band (the late ’70s group, not the force) had rehearsed for a year and was ready to start performing when the singing bass player (the Sting of the band) moved to Tassie. My personal ideal is a duo format. With popular music/folk/jazz, etc, it gives you the potential of two voices for harmonies, someone for a soloist to bounce oﬀ, variety for an audience and, let’s face it, two is better than one. Two reasonable players at their best lift each other and generally make better music than one good player. Today with loopers and subtle use of backings for accompaniment, a band sound can be achieved. Business-wise there is little payment in music anymore, so most are performing for love. It can be a lonely occupation, especially as a soloist, so more than anything the company with a duo or trio is welcome.

We will all sometimes encounter and even be guilty of echoing the “back in my day” sentiment, reflecting that students of today are luckier than we were with lavish equipment and schools that are luxurious by the standards of our own schooling. The modern curriculum is a wonderfully diverse expanse of choices and opportunity for modern students and our young people rise to this challenge with an eﬀortlessness that frequently leaves me shaking my head in admiration. Second, lavish is exactly the expectation that I think should go hand-in-hand with education. As parents we should be demanding that the ﬁscal and material resources directed into the education of our children is lavish. Science labs, learning resource centres (libraries to us older folk), all of them should be lavish because our students deserve nothing less. The future looks bright … just like our kids.

Keynote speaker Montville GP Dr Sam Manger, who is also president of the Australasian Society of Lifestyle Medicine, said the free forum was designed for people over the age of 50

FREE community-based workshops that focus on positive steps towards managing chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes are once again being offered by Sunshine Coast Health and Hospital Service (SCHHS). SCHHS health promotion officer Kerry Roach, who coordinates the workshops, says type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes. It affects 85-90% of all people with diabetes and can be largely prevented by leading a healthy life. “With the easing of COVID-19 restrictions our workshops are scheduled to run regularly across

the Sunshine Coast and Gympie region, giving people an opportunity to remain focussed, stay updated with knowledge and feel well supported,” Kerry said. The workshops are open to anyone diagnosed with type 2 diabetes or pre-diabetes, with family or carers also welcome to attend. They will run all year with the first block starting on February 11. • CITRUS trees are heavy feeders and need fertilising now. Use a citrus specific fertiliser and apply at the rate on the bag. • It’s important to keep up regular watering of citrus while they are flowering and developing small fruits. • Fertilise your Camellia sasanqua bushes as the buds appear. Use a special camellia and azalea fertiliser. • Remove the spent flowering stems of agapanthus. You can collect the seed and grow them yourself. • Prepare bulb beds and beds for spring-flowering annuals with deep digging, addition of organic matter and mulching. Start looking in books or on the internet for different spring flowering bulbs you might like to order this month and plant in autumn. • Once the sweet corn has finished, start to prepare it for pea and snow pea crops by digging in some garden lime to raise the pH level in preparation for March/April planting. Chop up the old sweet corn plants and dig them back into the garden as organic matter. A mower with a catcher does a good job of this if you don’t have a mulcher.

Talking bugs ‘DAYS of our hives’, ‘Eating insects for sustainability’ and ‘Sects, bugs and rock n roll’ are some of the titles of a fascinating series of bug talks, hosted monthly by Mooloolah River Landcare on Saturday afternoons by renowned entomologist, the bug lady Michelle Gleeson. The first talk in the series was about insect classification and included a pinning/mounting workshop with attendees going home with a sustainably sourced rhinoceros beetle and an orchard swallowtail butterfly to start their own collections. The Days of our hives talk will be held on February 27, Eating insects for sustainability on March 27 and Sects, bugs and rock ‘n’ roll on May 1. Michelle is the director of Bugs Ed

and an adjunct university fellow at The University of Queensland. She is the author of ‘Miniature Lives: Identifying insects in your home and garden’ and one of her career highlights was working with Sir David Attenborough wrangling rhinoceros beetles alongside real rhinos at Australia Zoo. Her monthly presentations are held onsite at the Mooloolah River Landcare native nursery, 2671 Steve Irwin Way, Glenview. Placements are limited so bookings are essential. Tuesday, January 19: A mixed stableford 18-hole competition was played with first place going to Doug Evans with 38 points on a count back from Andrew Gercken also 38 points. Runner up went to Neil Stenhouse with 37 points and third Jon Fairman 36 points on a count back from Richard Owen also 36 points. Wednesday, January 20: A mixed stroke nett 18-hole event was played with first place to Tonny Jorgensen with 68 nett, runner up Simon Lower 71 nett and third Ian Chew 78 nett. Saturday, January 23: A mixed stableford competition was held with first place to Dave Scott 41 points, runner up Richard Clayton 36 points on count backs from Richard Clayton, Peter Trounce, Corey Zammit and Rupert Hohls all on 36. It was another action-packed week at the club. On Monday we welcomed six teams from Kilcoy, Woodford and Mapleton in our monthly pairs competition. We were generous in letting Bill Edwards and Noel Lane from Kilcoy win the competition again. Graeme Glover and Miles Allen were the runners-up. We are now into our Wednesday night competition and we saw 40 bowlers enjoy the barbeque, beer and the bowls. There are four teams with maximum points and two teams with zero points, but it’s early days. The 3 Flamingos beat the Outlaws on the last end. Mo’s Marauders had a close win over the Golfers. RPT (ex-Handles) were merciless in annihilating the Mighty 10s and the Oblimeys easily

squashed the JAM team. The Musketeers had their first win of the season by beating the Mavericks. Pegasus continued their winning streak by beating the Wot Notts. The Amigos gained three points for being there. Rumours suggest that the Tutors have been busy devising a new game plan which involves turning up and bowling. On Friday 19, players turned up for scroungers. This week most of the winners had low handicaps but it’s not always like that. And because they won, their handicaps have been lowered. John Williams narrowly beat Sally Squires and Joe Walters. Miles Allen beat Kay Gesch and Liz Williams. Kay got off to a flying start with 14 points after three ends but couldn’t maintain that standard. Brian Squires beat Dennis Kyling and Don Ginns. Brian scored maximum points on three ends. In a close game, Marg Ginns beat Dave Robson and Mick Bulger with only three points separating them. Marilyn Podmore excelled with a raw score of 52 over Brett Gillis and Wendy Bulger. While John Long played consistently to beat Ben Fawns, Judith Lees and Relma Godfrey. We play every Tuesday morning, Wednesday night and Friday afternoon. TWO games of doubles were played on Thursday, January 21. On lawn one Donna Manning and Bev Sockhill won against Vince Carbery and Janelle Wilson 12-6. On lawn two Ken Barker and Gillian Bradley came a close second to Val Carbery and Lynette Evans 5-6. Sarah Widin was the star on Sunday, January 24, pegging out 26–1 against Vince and Donna. Wallace Roy and Nick Cram were no match for Helen Andrews and Kath Smith in their game, going down 8–10 with Wallace scoring as many hoops as Nick in some intra-team rivalry. Ken and Val played to an exciting ﬁnish. Val, on her last turn, missed four back leaving Ken with a 16–15 win. Lynette and Janelle played a very

instructive game to ﬁnish 6–2, with Lynette taking home the spoils. Our excellent, well cared for lawns are on the right-hand side of the Maleny Showground.
