Being avid recyclers and composters, we are always pleased to hear about the way readers use their copies of GC&M News after they have been read. Over the years I figured that I have seen and heard of plenty of great uses, from lining bird cages, creating a barrier to stop weeds growing in the garden, and as bin liners when plastic bags were being phased out at the supermarket. However, I have to say my heart gave a little flutter when I was reading about the beautiful artwork that recently took out the Local Art – Local Content Art Prize award at the Caloundra Regional Gallery created by Ken Munsie, which is featured on our front cover. Ken said the vessel was made from pages of the local newspaper, and while it didn’t say that local newspaper was the Glasshouse Country & Maleny News, it gave me goose bumps to know that something we ‘pump out each week’ has the potential to be turned into award-winning art. I haven’t had a chance yet to pop into the gallery and take a look at all of the Local Art – Local Content but I am keen to take a look, to see the full story about Ken’s work on page 5. Regards,

Local News Landsborough overpass discussion A public meeting will be hosted by the Landsborough Overpass Reference Committee (LORC) on Friday, February 21 from 7pm at the Landsborough Hall for the Landsborough community to consider and comment on each of the potential solutions to the proposed closing of the current railway crossing, at Caloundra Road and Maleny Street. Spokesperson for the committee Tim Fitzpatrick, from Landsborough Chemist, said the 15 member committee was formed following a public meeting in April 2019 and that each member brings an important level of understanding, experience and community knowledge to the forum. “The committee has been meeting regularly since April and has reviewed several submitted options with significant time given to seeking viable solutions to the commuter car parking issues within the Landsborough township,” Tim said. Ten rail and road separation presentations have been reviewed by the committee, with each proponent given the opportunity to table, talk and answer questions about their solution. A sub-committee was formed to analyse each proposal against six agreed criteria, which consider factors such as not dividing the town, preserving and enhancing the Heritage Precinct, ample parking provision, safe ease of access, no by-passing of the town and none or minimal property resumptions.

There was not one option which is preferred or supported by the whole committee, however they have unanimously agreed what the key characteristics of the ideal solution would be. These characteristics are: • Any solution will not divide the town but allow the eastern and western sides to remain integrated and connected. • There must be adequate parking provision within the township to accommodate the needs for residents, visitors, caravanners, trucks, rail and bus commuters now and into the future. • Safe ease of access for vehicular traffic, pedestrian and cyclist movements between both sides of town • Include allowance for all business sectors to grow and prosper on both sides of the township. • Any proposed solution must include provision for the preservation and enhancement of the Heritage Precinct around the Landsborough museum, hall and the environs. • It will not destroy any heritage sites or other areas of significance within the Landsborough township. Maleny emergency complex details released Following on from Minister for Fire and Emergency Services Craig Crawford’s site visit last October, the State Government has taken the next step in building the long awaited new emergency services complex in Maleny. The proposed complex will house the SES, the auxiliary urban fire brigade and the rural fire brigade all within the one facility on the corner of Macadamia Drive and Dixon Avenue and will include a four-bay fire and rescue integrated building, which incorporates office space, storage facilities, a hard-surface training pad, as well as 21 onsite car parking spaces. The project has a $2.5 million budget and is planned to be delivered within the 2019/20 financial year. The plans and proposal for the complex are now available for the local community to read and

make public submissions on. Currently, the auxiliary brigade operates from their station in Bunya Street, whilst the SES and the rural fire brigade share a shed in the Maleny Showgrounds – a less than ideal situation as they have had to move out each year for the Maleny Show. It is expected that this year’s Maleny Show will be the last that the SES and Maleny Rural Fire will have this disruption. Mountains central to winning entry The winners of the sixth annual Local Artists Local Content Art Prize currently on display at the Caloundra Regional Gallery was announced last week with former Maleny artist Ken Munsie being awarded the $5,000 Best of Show prize for his mixed-media work ‘Messages from the Mountains’. In his artist statement about the work, Ken said the vessel, made from pages of the local newspaper, is carrying in its hull messages of concern and urgency from the four great Glass House Mountains. But the vessel is stranded in the blackened timbers of the coastal mangroves - representing the burnt-out ideas of our climatechange-denying politicians. Ken describes his arts practise as based on one simple element – rescued materials. “With my assemblage artworks, I use a combination of timber, rusted metal and handmade paper,” Ken said. “All materials have had a previous life, have been discarded, rescued and then re-worked to create individual works. “The works reflect my ongoing fascination with life, death and rebirth and my interest in the traces of past existences. I start with a pile of un-related materials and slowly work them into an artwork that can be read with imagination. The idea of evolution frequently runs through my assemblage works as I explore the craft of the Artist's Book and paper-making.

“Translating these concepts into sculptures, giving them shape and form, and perhaps a life of their own is a truly fascinating process. Starting his working life as a jackaroo on a large sheep station near Wilcannia and later a cattle station in the Northern Territory, Division 5 candidate Greg Cutlack ran his own cattle and sheep property before settling in Eudlo with his family in 2002. “We had sold our farm near Emmaville in NSW and purchased our block at Eudlo,” he said. “The children enrolled at Eudlo State School where we immersed ourselves in our new community. I was the P&C president and enjoyed organising our local WOEIE (Where On Earth Is Eudlo) festival. “We owner-built our house from demolition and recycled materials from two small Queenslanders, a retired timber mill and the old Moffat Beach picture cinema that we demolished.” With a thirst for construction, Greg went on to become a registered builder and has a deep passion for sustainable, affordable, accessible and eco-friendly housing. “I am sole director and employee of my own company – Ecosos Pty Ltd – and have recently completed three years of contract work with Telstra and NBN Co connecting customers to the node in the old copper network. “I understand firsthand the frustration and disappointment some residents experience with their data transfers, or lack thereof. Caring for the Hinterland community for over 20 yrs

Raelene Ellis candidate for Division 1 Transparency and declaring a climate emergency are key issues in Raelene Ellis’s run for Division 1 in the Sunshine Coast Council elections on March 28. Raelene, a practising lawyer in Caloundra, said her key concerns were transparency and honest government – a significant motivating factor in her decision to run for council. “The Sunshine Coast Council has come under fire for its use of closed-door decision making,” she said. “Governments at all levels make decisions for the people and, except where crucial, the decisionmaking process should be open and politicians should be accountable.” Meaningful community consultation is also important to Ms Ellis. “If elected, I will be holding regular listening posts and ensuring that I am available to my electorate on a regular and frequent basis. That is what politicians are supposed to do – listen to the needs of their electorate,” she said. The burgeoning climate crisis is of great concern and if elected, Ms Ellis and all Greens candidates will immediately propose that the council declares a climate emergency. “Our country is burning, our rivers are running dry, our southern neighbours are facing an environmental crisis never seen before. We on the Sunshine Coast are thankful the fires we experienced did not reach such magnitude. We must take action now,” she said. services, combating overdevelopment, inappropriate development and habitat loss are also high on the Greens’ agenda. “With the burgeoning development in Aura and further proposed extensions, we must ensure those new to the area have access to services, including public transport,” Ms Ellis said. “These new developments, including where I live at Bells Reach, have some community benefits such as many allocated green spaces, parks and community gardens. It will be important that these areas are appropriately managed to ensure they remain clean and accessible green, community spaces,” she said. She and her family moved from Brisbane to the Sunshine Coast in 2017 to enjoy all the benefits the Sunshine Coast has to offer. “We wanted to show our child that there is more to life than work, shop, sleep, in between battling traffic congestion. We moved here to teach our daughter the value of an outdoor healthy lifestyle, living together with nature and respecting the environment,” Ms Ellis said. “The Greens' values of ecological sustainability, grassroots democracy, peace and non-violence and social justice clearly differentiate our party from the other parties and independents”. Business News Maleny Dairies call out government contract process After a commercial contract to supply Metro North Hospital and Health Service facilities with dairy products was awarded to rival manufacturer Pauls, Maleny Dairies issued a statement calling out the state government for not following its Buy Queensland procurement policies. In the statement Maleny Dairies said they were overlooked in favour of Chinese and French owned companies, Lactalis Australia, which owns Pauls, and Lion Dairy, owners of Dairy Farmers. “In this case the tender process appears to have been solely focused on the ability to deliver the cheapest milk regardless of the consequences to local employment,” the Maleny Dairies statement said. In 2017, the state government introduced a buy local policy (Buy Queensland) to boost Queensland business and create more jobs in Queensland for Queenslanders. Under the procurement policy, a local supplier is defined as a business that maintains a workforce within a 125km radius of where the goods are needed. Local suppliers then receive a local weighting of up to 30% on any tender lodged for a significant procurement. The policy also requires businesses tendering for government procurement contracts to have a permanent workforce in Queensland. They need to offer fair wages, conditions and superannuation, and have good workplace health and safety records. In a series of response statements, Minister for Health Steven Miles clarified that the contract to provide milk to Brisbane hospitals was awarded to a Brisbane-based company and would support jobs in Brisbane and throughout Queensland. “Pauls has been a Queensland-based company from the very beginning when they opened their first milk factory on the banks of the Brisbane River back in the 1930s,” Mr Miles said. “Pauls buy milk from over 140 Queensland dairy farmers. Every single one of them is family owned and operated. “These are family-owned dairies in the Darling Downs, Lockyer Valley, Wide Bay, South Burnett, Central Queensland and the Atherton Tablelands. “They employ 700 Queenslanders and it keeps 45% of Queensland’s dairy farms going. And it’s really important to note that no foreign milk will be imported for this contract. “Unfortunately, Maleny Dairies couldn’t supply the volume needed for Metro Norths dairy contract and, more importantly, couldn’t supply all the products to meet the dietary requirements of sick Queenslanders in hospital. “We support Queenslanders and Queensland businesses. 32,500 of them have been awarded $17 billion worth of government work because we put Queensland companies first,” Mr Miles said. The government also clarified that a small percentage (2-3%) of the contract is being filled by Lion Dairy for a niche product only they produce, which is used in some patient diets. LNP Leader Deb Frecklington called the contract decision a snub and a slap in the face. Speaking in Maleny recently, Ms Frecklington launched a petition calling on Annastacia Palaszczuk to reverse her government’s “disgraceful decision”. “Maleny Dairies is proudly Queensland but they’ve been utterly betrayed by Labor,” Ms Frecklington said.

“There has been an overwhelming response by Queenslanders who think Maleny Dairies has been dudded by the Palaszczuk Labor government. “This petition will send a strong message to Annastacia Palaszczuk that Queenslanders won’t tolerate being pushed aside for overseas companies," Ms Frecklington said. Member for Glass House Andrew Powell said every excuse the Palaszczuk government had given didn't stack up. “Maleny Dairies had ongoing discussions with Palaszczuk government officials but none of the issues they are now citing were raised,” Mr Powell said. “The Palaszczuk government used Maleny Dairies to promote their Buy Queensland policy but then haven’t given them a go. “We need 10,000 signatures by February 3 to get this debated by the Parliament. “It is important that this gets debated on the floor because Queenslanders are outraged by the decision,” Mr Powell said. The petition – created by Lovice Lowden of Witta and sponsored by Andrew Powell – has almost 5,000 signatures, and can be found at www. parliament.qld.gov.au/work-of-assembly/petitions/ petition-details?id=3268. However, the peak dairy representative body Queensland Dairyfarmers’ Organisation (QDO) is calling for calm on all fronts and a halt to sensationalising the issue. “While I am not privy to the ins and outs of the Queensland Government procurement policies, I do know that there were several criteria (which) had to be satisfied and that the recent decision to award the Metro North Hospital and Health Services contract to Lactalis and Lion would not have been made lightly,” QDO president Brian Tessmann said. “As politicians you would be fully aware of the complexity of the tendering process and know that many facts have been ignored for the sake of sensationalising a story," he said. “As the president of the Queensland Dairyfarmers’ Organisation, I can say with confidence that the farmers we represent are fed up with having the dairy industry treated like a political football over this issue. “Two-thirds of our members supply either to Lactalis or Lion Dairy. While both are internationally owned these processors are vitally important to the Queensland dairy industry, Queensland jobs and the Queensland economy. “Please, I ask you all to stop sensationalising a story that, though disappointing to a Queensland small business, should have got two lines of commentary back when the tender was awarded in December last year.” Since going public, Maleny Dairies have been overwhelmed with messages of support through social media with almost 5,000 comments posted and 19,000 shares resulting from their two Facebook page posts. In reply, Maleny Dairies posted a message to their supporters: “Thank you everyone for all the support you have given us since posting the issue surrounding the Buy Queensland policy. We acknowledge the positive feedback and the proactive stance you have taken, which makes us proud!"

Being a Maleny Show Personality By Sonia Clark With some exciting new updates to this years’ Maleny Show Personality competition, GC&M News thought we’d go behind the scenes and catch up with last year’s Miss Junior Show Princess, Kimberley Bland and her mum Misty, to find out what the Show Personality experience has meant to them. This will be the third year that Kimberley has been part of the competition. When she first entered in 2018, Kimberley had turned 15 just in time to qualify for the Junior Show Princess category. She went on to win this the following year. This year, the Year 11 Glasshouse Christian College student, has nominated for the Charity Person category, which offers the winner $1,500 in travel vouchers. Kimberley said she was inspired to get involved again for a number of reasons, including seeing her mum Misty being heavily involved in charity work and social fundraiser initiatives. Kimberley said she was very nervous the first year she entered and she had to really challenge herself to get up on stage to answer questions posed by the judges. She said last year she was much better prepared and was really happy that her hard work in preparation for the competition paid off. “I would encourage anyone thinking of being part to just give it a shot, it is always good to try something new and the Maleny Show is such an important tradition for our region,” Kimberley said.

“Even if you are nervous at first it turns out to be a great experience and really fun. It actually has been pretty awesome to be involved, to see how the show comes together, and to represent our community and region.” Kimberley said one of the biggest benefits of being involved in the Show Personality experience has been the boost it has given her self-confidence. Misty said it was wonderful to see her daughter “flourish and to grow into herself.” “It’s been a beautiful journey for all of us to be part of,” she says. “It has been great for Kimberley’s confidence and lovely to see her follow her passion, as well as an amazing learning curve.” To be eligible to enter the Charity Person category, participants must raise a minimum of $1,200. Kimberley has already committed to organising a high tea event in early May at The Orangery Maleny, and is in the process of approaching local businesses to arrange a mega-raffle. “While she has been able to lean on me for advice with her nomination for charity person, it has all been her own gig to pull together,” Misty said. “It’s so great to see her be the driving force in organising her own fundraising event, setting up her own meetings and approaching local businesses as part of the competition experience.” If you would like to support Kimberley’s fundraising efforts, email her at kimbland03@gmail.com.

Community News Local Councillor calls for better fire management

Bush fire preparedness and response is on everyone’s minds at the moment, and Division 1 Councillor Rick Baberowski wants council to answer the call. He will be requesting the Chief Executive Officer to authorise a report to look at how council resource their Local Disaster Management Group and to develop a new and more comprehensive bushfire prevention strategy for the region. In a notified motion to be debated in the January 30 ordinary meeting of council, Cr Baberowski asks for the strategy to consider items such as a hazard reduction burn regime, Queensland Fire and Emergency Service resourcing, indigenous advice and free or discounted green waste disposal during times of total fire bans. “Like we all did, I had a tense summer waiting for the rain to finally come, and I’ve spent a lot of time thinking and talking with locals about what council could do to help,” Cr Baberowski said. “This motion comes from a number of discussions I’ve had with local residents and members of the rural fire brigades, who’ve made several suggestions and requests.” Members of the community have been calling on Cr Baberowski to proactively reduce the regions fuel loads as a preventative strategy. “The point is that the community is looking for leadership and wants to see the rapid development of a range of practical and ‘doable’ short term responses as well as new, more comprehensive longer-term plans focused on prevention,” Cr Baberowski said. “Council’s disaster management team are very dedicated and they do an excellent job, but we can always do more and we still need to take this opportunity to learn and have an even better response next time.”

LRB member tells his story

George McArdle of Little River Band (LRB) will be performing on Sunday, February 2, at 10am at Church on the Rise, Maleny and at 6pm at Beerwah Church on the Rise. Members of the community are welcome to come along to this free event. From 1976–1979, George was the bass player in LRB, one of the most highly acclaimed rock music bands of all time. They were the first Australian group to make the top ten charts in the United States, achieving gold status. You may remember the band’s memorable hits from the 70’s; ‘Help is on its way’, ‘Home on a Monday’, ‘Happy Anniversary’, and ‘Every Day of My Life’. George came from a violent, abusive background and as he got older, he dived headlong into alcohol, fighting, theft, spiritualism and rock music. After playing with several minor bands, he joined LRB at the age of 21 and carved out his niche as one of the greatest bass players ever to come out of Australia. While a member of LRB, he underwent a profound spiritual conversion to Christianity. George chose to leave the band at arguably the pinnacle of its fame following his dramatic conversion and confessed that it’s “not satisfying” being a celebrity. “Even now I have somewhat of an aversion to it because it’s not real,” George said. “The way God interrupted my life back then I just knew I had to do something about it, and to carry on the way I was, was not an option.” The Maleny church meet at 50 Bunya Street - Maleny High School and the Beerwah church is located at 27 Beerwah Parade. Contributed by Karli Pearson The Landsborough Scout Group is looking forward to a fantastic 2020 after their successes of 2019 and very productive working bees over the Christmas school holidays. The Landsborough Scouts held their first whole group camp last year, with youth members from five to 16 years all enjoying a two-day camp of orienteering, canoeing, knot tying and other fun activities. They also congratulated Cub Scout Grace when she was presented with the Grey Wolf Award, the pinnacle award in Cub Scouts. Venturer Scouts celebrated as they witnessed the construction of their new meeting room and the group's storage unit. With the 2020 Scouting year starting in the first week of February, this is the perfect time for new youth members, as well as adult members, to become involved with Landsborough Scout

Group. Joeys (five to seven years) meet Tuesdays from 6pm to 7pm. Cubs (eight to ten years) meet Tuesdays from 6pm to 7.30pm. Scouts (11 to 14 years) and Venturers (15 to 17 years) meet Thursdays from 6pm to 8pm. Police officers from both Eumundi and Beerwah Police stations were recently involved in saving the life of Connie the baby platypus. On January 13, Eumundi Police were patrolling the area when they saw what they thought was an injured bird being blown across the Bruce Highway by a passing car. When they stopped, they the nie Con were surprised to discover with hes Hug Senior Constable Craig that it was a baby baby platypus platypus instead. It is believed that the creek Connie was living in had dried out and she was seeking a safe environment to recover. Senior Constable Craig Hughes said he used his police vest to cover the little critter and took her to a wildlife rehabilitation centre for her injuries. “The wonderful vets conducted a preliminary check on Connie and then asked for assistance to get her to the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital for further treatment,” Craig said. Eumundi Police swung into action and organised to meet Beerwah officers half way to get Connie to the wildlife hospital, where she was nursed back to health. Beerwah Police Station Acting Sergeant Jo Moore said she was extremely pleased Connie had regained her strength and had now been released. “It’s not every day we get to escort a baby platypus,” Jo said. Thanks to the fantastic staff from the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital who cared for Connie and ensured she was well enough to return home.

Volunteers wanted for local wildlife rehabilitation centre

By Sonia Clark It has been 19 years since the Twinnies organised their first animal rescue. Since then, the sisters have devoted themselves to providing a 24-hour, seven-day-a-week rescue and rehabilitation service for sick and injured seabirds, waterbirds, native animals and birds. They are now looking for more volunteers to help lend a hand at their Landsborough-based centre, with a variety of work available. The Twinnies' mum, Helen Powers, said all volunteer positions were flexible and even if people could offer just a couple of hours a week then that would be most appreciated. Help is required to prepare food for the birds and animals, clean up, rake or just generally help around the centre. She said they are also looking for people able to offer "a bit of muscle" with some of the more manual tasks. "We suggest people come along for a few hours, look around and see if they think it’ll suit them. It is very rewarding work, especially for animal lovers to see the progress of an injured bird rehabilitated back to health. "It’s also a great way to offer hands-on help for our native wildlife and a lovely chance to get out of the house and meet others," Helen said. The established charity has always relied heavily on the goodwill of volunteers and the generosity of the community and local businesses to allow them to continue their notfor-profit work with donations of grain, linen, porta-cots, fish and bottled water always needed. The Beerwah CWA is hosting a sewing bee on Saturday, February 15 to help wildlife carers from WILVOS (Wildlife Volunteers Association Inc) at their hall in Simpson Street, Beerwah from 9am – 12noon. Based on the Sunshine Coast, WILVOS have been providing rescue, rehabilitation and release services to injured, orphaned and distressed native animals for over 25 years. With the effects of drought and fires, our wildlife needs us more than ever. Don’t worry if you don’t know how to sew – there will be other jobs like cutting and ironing. If you’re a crocheter, we’ll have a pattern for crocheting nests for baby birds. We will be making very simple pouches and for the more experienced sewers, WILVOS have requested covers for rescue baskets. Carers rely on these basket covers to keep wildlife calm and safe so they're always in high demand. This is a chance to help those that are helping our vulnerable Australian wildlife. Water tank purchase

Contributed by Bob Banner At the last Beerwah Lions business meeting the club decided to donate $3,000 to purchase a water tank as a means of offering practical help to victims of the recent fires. The initiative is part of the Lions Club International Foundation, which will see the 27,000 litre tanks plumbed in, fitted with a pump and filled with water. The complete packages will be offered to families or communities in need. Priority is being given to families with children and the elderly. The first tank deliveries have been made and installation is under way with more to come. The Lions logo and the name of the contributing club will be applied to each tank. The Beerwah Lions members are pleased to have been advised by past district governor Bob Goldsworthy that their donation has been received and is being processed.

Cool ties for Vollies

This project was born by three passionate ladies in Victoria with a desire to help our volunteers throughout Australia in their extreme time of need. Cool ties were a welcome addition to anyone working in the heat, and with the power of social media, sewing bees throughout the country and even internationally started popping up. Locally, the Maleny and Beerwah CWA Branches, Glasshouse Boomerang Bags, and other community groups joined forces in the Beerwah CWA Hall, spending the day sewing and making a total of 216 cool ties. These ties were then sent to the ACT and distributed to volunteers working on the front line of recent bush fires. A group of hinterland locals have banded together with businesses and artists to create the Bushfire Fundraiser Dinner event, which will be held at Altitude on Montville on Sunday, February 23. Tickets for the three-course dinner with live entertainment are $100 with 100% of the ticket price, auctions and raffles going to charity to support people and wildlife affected by the ongoing bushfire crisis in Victoria and New South Wales. Animals benefits from sauce

Owner of Maleny Pies Jamie Hodges uses the best local produce to make his pies, pasties and sausage rolls and while he doesn’t personally think that a good pie needs sauce, he understands that some of his customers think it is essential. So instead of buying a mass produced sauce to sell with his tasty baked goods, he decided to make his own. Better still, he only asks for a donation to a charitable cause of his choosing for the sauce. Jason said ‘the homemade sauce by donation’ concept was born in late 2013 and since its inception, thousands of donations later he has collected a combined total of over $5,000. To be specific, it is at $5058.90 and counting. He is proud to say that 100% of the donations go to the Sunshine Coast Animal Refuge. You Said It Missing Jodie

It recently came to my attention that Jodie, the most lovely, friendly staff member at Glass House IGA, is no longer working in the business. I am sure like many locals I was distressed to hear the news that she had resigned from her job just before Christmas. In today’s world the connections we make in our local community are so important and Jodie was a great example of how someone could make you feel so welcome and valued with the flash of her smile and her kind enquiry about how you were going. In this so-called modern day and age, genuine warmth and friendliness in customer service is something that is grossly lacking in many parts of the service industry. And I am sure that many long-term locals like me would agree that Jodie provided the highest quality service to her customers, which was part of what encouraged our loyalty as customers. I would like to thank Jodie for sharing her vibrant, bubbly personality with all of her customers over the many years that she was part of our daily interactions and no doubt her next employer will definitely benefit from her approach. Just disgusting

This letter is addressed to all the pigs - yes pigs - that leave their rubbish at the two charity bins on Bowen Road near the Puma Service Centre. I live up Bowen Road and every week there is a pile of rubbish left outside these bins because some people are too lazy to take their so-called charity donation to the local charity shops or to the recycle markets located at the Resource Recovery Centre in Beerwah. The charity bins are operated by local not-forprofit organisations with proceeds from sales going back into local communities. This laziness puts a strain on these charities to get rid of your rubbish. So come on people do something for your community charities and take your rubbish elsewhere. Very impressed

My husband and I are very impressed with HQPlantations' safety operations, which we read about in the January 15 edition of GC&M News. We did not realise the extent of the plantations, which cover Beerburrum and surrounding areas, and the facilities it operates. Ongoing climate debate

The conversation about our climate continues and recent letter writer Francis Harper (GC&M News, January 15) made a sensible, thoughtful contribution. With activities such as warfare and sport we tend to boast about punching above our weight but when it comes to consumption and pollution some of us say "what's the point" as we only contribute 1.3 per cent to the world's output. However, we are 0.03 per cent of the world's population so we are actually high polluters per person. Political commentator Peter van Onselen brings a personal aspect to the argument. Don't bother paying tax, one person's contribution won't make any difference. Don't vote, one person's vote won't 18

We want better

Care bags appreciated

I was extremely disappointed with the standard of the community carols this year and I know I am not alone. I checked the program and possibly 16 of them could be considered Christmas songs, with songs being totally irrelevant for the Christmas carols such as 'Under the Boardwalk' and 'Country Road'. The 2019 carols didn’t have many performers who were local. If Masterpiece Dance weren’t involved, there would have only been a handful of local performers. It is called the Glasshouse Country Community Carols for a reason – it is for locals, by locals. Lastly, the laser show - it didn’t happen. I was told that it was decided the night before but no one had the decency to tell anyone until just before the last few songs. Fireworks always happen and when we were told that there was a laser show instead because of the bush fires, it made sense so no one objected. But only telling people that they were cancelled five minutes before they were supposed to happen – really? I would not be surprised if locals skip the 2020 carols. We want a better carols event this year with actual carols, local performers and a sense of Christmas spirit – there wasn’t a hint of it. We were promised a “spectacular” to make up for 2018 being cancelled and we didn’t get a spectacular - we get some performers singing irrelevant songs. Do a better job next year. It is the few handfuls of the ultra-rich who are behind all the present mayhem, as they one day hope to govern the world and the abuse of this new technology helps their cause.

Dog attack in Mooloolah

On Tuesday, January 14 at 7am, on Neill Road, Mooloolah, my black kelpie cross was attacked by a heeler cross, who managed to break free from its collar. The dog's owner was extremely helpful in breaking up the fight. I was unable to get 'Doug's owner's name in the flurry, because she drove off shortly after. The mainstream media love to make the Greens look like idiots. Senator Larrisa Waters and Brisbane City Councillor Jono Sri will be there to tell us firsthand what it’s like to be in government with megalomaniacs. They will also give us hope that together we can change the system. You will be able to meet them and our four Sunshine Coast candidates. Light refreshments and entertainment are on the menu (Jono is a spoken word poet, and musicians will be there. There has never been a better time to have a Green on council. Profit over people and environment is catching up with us. The Greens don’t chase votes through popularist policy, cheap stunts, or spin doctoring. Our policies have been ethically developed over decades of consensus among our members. Our branches decide our prefernces and the Queensland Greens don’t accept corporate donations. The major parties have more influence over council than you realise. Unbranded ‘independents’ are very often not independent. Some are supported by the major parties (who both accepted over $100 million in corporate donations in the past few years, which means they are beholden to corporates, and not you and I). Who here agrees that the current council seems to want to make the Sunshine Coast look like the Gold Coast? Come and see for yourself that Larissa, Jono and the team are not motivated by money or greed, but we are working hard to make the world a better place. Hope to see you there! Whatever he does, it is exciting and dramatic. Chris believes that through art we can learn to see and when we learn that a whole new world of understanding of beauty is opened to us. Over the years Chris has received numerous art awards and recognition among fellow artists, including the Farrow Award for Artistic Excellence at the Maleny Art Awards in 2003, being short listed for the Kenilworth Art Prize two years running in 2010 and 2011, winning first prize in the Pastel Society of Australia winter exhibition in 2011 and first in the scape awards in 2014 and 2015. Chris has travelled extensively in the past couple of years, teaching workshops in five states as well as overseas. His workshops are always infused with humour, warmth and considerable enthusiasm. Opening night for the exhibition will be Friday, February 7 at 6.30pm. There will be drinks, nibbles and live music, so be sure to come along.

Roger’s art intersects

Beerwah artist Roger Callen is presenting an exhibition of the artwork aptly named ‘Intersections’, which feature works on paper with collage, at the Wan’din’in arts space at Eumundi from Friday, February 21 to Saturday, March 21. His selection of works takes a closer look at the massive disconnection we find ourselves in with nature, and man’s relentless destruction of it. Roger said in today’s world, the fundamentals of the given natural world and human cultural practice intersect, interact and feed off one another. “Humanity lives a great variety of invented imaginings and forgets its indebtedness to environment, believing technology will save all,” Roger said. Roger comes from a family of artists and paints mainly landscapes. His work ranges from realist to abstract expressionist and sometimes includes collage elements. He prefers to paint on paper and board in water-based media and has a lifelong interest in landscape. The art space is located at 73 Memorial Avenue, Eumundi and is open from 10am – 4pm Monday to Friday and 10am – 2pm on Saturday.

Still Stompin’ … still strong! As we celebrate the start of the new year, why not celebrate the start of a new you? If you’ve ever thought about joining a fun, friendly local fitness class, suitable for all ages but particularly seniors, then head along to Still Stompin’ - still going strong after five years. The 45-minute weekly classes are taught by the effervescent Julie Allen who firmly believes a fun approach to fitness is a fantastic way to build strength and stamina, as well as providing a wonderful way to feel good and develop some long lasting friendships. Julie said that over the five years she had been running her classes, she had been delighted to see many of her participants forging long-term friendships as they also improved their wellbeing, have fun and enjoy the unique mix of old and new music, and sing-along feel good classics. “Participants can work at their own pace in

a friendly non-judgmental environment with moves that are not over the top and that they can achieve comfortably. I try to shake it up each week with a mix of additional weighted hoops, drumming and resistance bands – so each class is never the same," Julie said. "We stomp, be strong and sometimes even sing along but we always leave each class with a big smile on our faces.”

Classes for 2020 will start on Monday, February 3 and will now run every Monday at 10.30am at Landsborough Hall and are suitable for ladies and gents. In late 2014, Vivienne Campion was diagnosed with a brain tumour which came as a profound shock, but she assumed that her recovery would be quick, and life would go on as usual. Vivienne said that her recovery turned out to be very slow and complex, and she had to leave her job, which was intensely disappointing. “As a result of severe balance issues, I needed a walking stick, and simple tasks like housework, shopping and walking my dogs were frustratingly difficult, particularly with the fog of fatigue that had never lifted since the neurosurgery,” explained Vivienne. “I was very glad to have survived, but my condition was far below expectations and hopes. “Three years later, following a succession of falls, I received intense rehab physio at Nambour Hospital, and this gave me the confidence to try tai chi. “My neurologist had advised me that I had to either do all the rehab exercises every day for the rest of my life or do tai chi! “Luckily, I had a friend who was an instructor with the Taoist Tai Chi Society, and when she told me that beginners’ classes were starting, I decided to start with two classes a week in February 2018.” Vivienne felt her initial progress seemed slow, and like many other beginners she struggled to remember moves and sequences, as well as having trouble with her co-ordination and balance.

However, half way through the beginner’s course, she was able to relegate her walking stick to the boot of her car and by the end of the course she was no longer using it. As she continued attending the more advanced classes, she noticed that the fog of fatigue had lifted and her energy levels were far higher. Building on the significant improvements, she began attending between three and four classes a week and she noticed more rapid gains, enabling her to really experience the joy of tai chi. “One of the other very significant benefits of my tai chi journey was experiencing the warmth and friendship of the Taoist Tai Chi Society community,” Vivienne said. “I felt that this, coupled with the major improvements in my physical wellbeing, contributed to mental health benefits as well. “Taoist tai chi has given me my life back, and I think that is the ultimate testimony to its value and efficacy.” If you would like to attend the try-it class in Maleny, you don’t need to book just turn up and meet in the picnic area.

Health &Wellbeing It’s a knock out

If an accident happens while playing sport or as a result of a childhood mishap and a tooth is knocked out, the faster you act, the better the chance of saving it. Australian Dental Association (ADA) is urging anyone engaged in physical activities to know what to do if this situation arises. Acting swiftly and decisively is key. “Accidents can happen for kids or adults at any time – some with quite serious consequences for our teeth,” ADA President Dr Carmelo Bonanno said. “But the trauma of a dental injury can be minimised if you know what to do if you or a family member suffers damage to teeth.” ADA recommends that if your child knocks out a ‘baby’ tooth (typically in place until the age of seven) before it’s ready to come out, find the tooth and only hold it by the crown (the visible, white enamel part), and not the root. Depending on your child’s age, the baby tooth may not have much root structure remaining. If you’re unsure if it’s a ‘baby’ or ‘adult’ tooth, don’t try to reinsert it back into the mouth. Instead put it into a sealed container with a small amount of cow’s milk or your child’s saliva and head straight to your dentist. Why milk? The milk, or saliva helps to keep the roots intact. Tap water can damage the root’s cells. “The dentist will check for any other damage in the mouth. Baby teeth aren’t put back into the mouth because an adult tooth will replace it eventually,” Dr Bonanno explained. If the accident happens after normal dental practice hours, head to an afterhours dentist, which can be found at the ADA’s Find a Dentist facility: www.ada.org.au/Find-a-Dentist.

Keeping kids safe at childcare

As the school year starts, knowing your child is up-to-date with immunisation can provide parents with real peace of mind. Vaccination provides protection against some of the diseases young children can catch. Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service (SCHHS) Public Health Physician Dr Rosie Muller said the start of childcare, preschool or kindergarten was a good time for parents to review their children’s vaccinations, to make sure they are up-to-date or know when they are due for their next vaccination. "The immunisation schedule can be hard to keep up with. There is a big gap in the schedule from 18 months to four years, so vaccination may not be thought of for a while,” Dr Muller said. “The routine childhood vaccinations for children at four years of age aim to protect against serious diseases such as diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough and polio. “Immunisation is extremely important and effective at preventing severe outcomes from life threatening infectious diseases.” Dr Muller said childhood immunisation rates are gradually improving, but remain below the 95% for good community immunity, which prevents outbreaks of disease. “Sometimes, an outbreak can occur in a childcare, preschool or kindergarten as you have many children together in the one place,” Dr Muller said. “Community immunity also helps protect people who can’t be vaccinated, for example babies who are too young. “One of the most important local barriers to childhood vaccination is parental hesitance.” Dr Muller says parents who are hesitant about vaccinating their child often have questions or concerns, but may not know where to get reliable information. “GPs and Australian government websites, such as Queensland Health are excellent sources of reliable information,” she said. Information about childhood vaccination is available on www.qld.gov.au/health/conditions/immunisation Parents can also use the Queensland Health smartphone app ‘VacciDate’ to help keep track of their child’s vaccinations. This app is available via the website.

Locals honoured at Australia Day awards At a special ceremony last Friday attended by more than 400 dignitaries, nominees and their guests, Mark Forbes, the founder of endED, a Sunshine Coast service that now provides nationwide support to people with eating disorders and their families, was announced as the 2020 Sunshine Coast Citizen of the Year. In partnership with the Butterfly Foundation, Mark has worked tirelessly to raise more than $2.8 million to develop endED Butterfly House at Mooloolah Valley, Australia’s first national residential treatment facility for people with eating disorder.

• Citrus trees are heavy feeders and need fertilising now. Use a specific citrus fertiliser and apply at the rate on the bag. • It’s important to keep up regular watering of citrus while they are flowering and developing small fruits. • Tidy up the strawberry beds. Remove any dead or diseased plants, weed and give them some fertiliser. Keep them well watered so they will produce runners for next season. • Fertilise your Camellia sasanqua bushes as the buds appear. Use a special camellia and azalea fertiliser to maintain slightly acidic soil. • Remove the spent flowering stems of agapanthus. You can collect the seeds and grow them yourself. • Prepare bulb beds for spring-flowering annuals with deep digging, addition of organic matter and mulching. Start looking in books or on the internet for different spring flowering bulbs you might like to order this month and plant in autumn. • Once the sweet corn has finished start to prepare the ground for peas and snow pea crops by digging in some garden lime to raise the pH level in preparation for March/April planting. Chop up the old sweet corn plants and dig them back into the garden as organic matter. A mower with a catcher does a good job of this if you don’t have a mulcher. • Take softwood cuttings of geraniums and pelargonium so that you can strike them and create new plants. • Sow broccoli and cabbage seeds now and raise them for planting in March and April. • Remove any scale from indoor plants using soapy water and a soft toothbrush. • Start a winter vegetable garden bed from scratch by layering sugarcane mulch, mushroom compost and manure to a depth of 70cm. Keep moist and allow it all to decompose. By March it will be a luscious organic soil ready for planting. A Qld Carers Group will meet on the first Friday of each month from 10am – 12 noon at the Beerwah Library. Their next meeting will be on Friday, February 7, with morning tea provided. The guest speaker on the day will be dementia advisor Katrina Thurgar with Ozcare. Dementia awareness is important as it aims to break down stigma about dementia and reduces barriers to accessing support for people living with dementia. Dementia Carer Support Groups are of value to carers as it is an opportunity to meet other people who are in a similar situation and allows you to share tips and ideas from each other’s caring role. Sport Tennis fun for kids Katya Spierling in conjunction with the Landsborough Tennis Club is starting regular Saturday afternoon fun activities with a tennis focus. The activities will be suitable for children of all ages and abilities and no previous tennis skills are required. The emphasis will be on having fun while developing ball skills. Where: Landsborough Tennis Club, Maleny Road, Landsborough When: Saturdays 3–5 pm starting Saturday, February 15 Cost: $5 per child, per session and rackets can be provided if required. Maleny Bowls Club Contributed by Miles Allen Last week was busy at the club as it seems the seasonal break and the rain has encouraged more people to come out and play. Our bowling surface always looks green but it seems even greener after a couple of good downpours. Tuesday morning saw 10 players competing. Thanks to Joe Walters for ensuring this event occurs and draws in players every week. Twilight bowls on Wednesday night saw an almost full attendance for the second week in a row. Players were keen to get into their teams and talk strategies for the season. The new season starts this week and with 15 teams competing for the trophy, the pundits are finding it very difficult to pick any winners at this stage. Scroungers on Fridays keeps pulling in the bowlers keen to hone their skills assisted by the generous (some would say generous, others wouldn’t) handicapping. The winners this week had handicaps ranging from five to nine, something for the handicapper to ponder. Sally Squires, John Williams and Dave Edwards all had comfortable wins. Dennis Kyling beat Don Ginns with a golden point and Doug McGuffiche came for behind on the last end to stun (and delight) the others. Well done to all players for the wonderful spirit in which the game is played. This week we will also welcome visitors from local clubs to our monthly pair's competition. We’ll have a full rink with some players nervously making their debut. We will be guaranteed a wonderful lunch from Kay Gesch and her willing band of helpers. A reminder that our AGM will be held on Saturday, February 8. All are welcome with full members being able to vote.

Also on lawn two Ken Barker and Sarah Widin played jailbreak croquet to win on the last shot of their game 12–11 against Kath Smith and Nick Cram. Nick and Kath found form to score 12 hoops against Helen Andrews and Donna on five. Meanwhile, in a shock result, Sarah went down to Wallace 11–8. Does this mean that they are going to change positions on the ladder? The photograph shows Theo Kleiberg, a longstanding member of Nambour club, attempting a critical roquet on lawn one. If he hits brown, he has two balls at his hoop and will move on to a fine break. Failure to do so will leave his opponent set up at one back. Normally an opponent at this level would not leave the balls set up in this way. However, these are sometimes difficult roquets to make because the consequences of missing unsettle the mind. Theo missed the shot and struggled from that point onwards. Coaching for beginners and others is available from 8-10 am on Saturdays. These are popular sessions with accredited coaches in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. Play days are Thursdays and Sundays at 2pm for 2.30pm.
