Hi Everyone Last Saturday’s weather was just amazing arriving right on cue for the Beerwah Charity Sports Day, the area’s biggest community fundraising event for the Cancer Council held at the Beerwah Sportsground. If you have been to Charity Sports Day over the last 40 years, you would recognise many of the unique elements that make up the day. My favourites have to be the novelty sports events for the kids, the photographic competition, the Rugged Mountain Morris Dancers and the Shetland Trotters (yep there is a trotting race with the most gorgeous fluffy Shetland ponies pulling along their young riders/ drivers). For the visitors on the day, the whole event would appear to come together effortlessly; however to me this is a sign of the dedicated team of people who bring the event together.

They do a spectacular job in the planning during the months before. Now in its 41st year, its success obviously has to come down to more than just great weather and a dedicated team of organisers, the key element in my mind is a community who are generous in spirit and also like to enjoy a great day of getting together and enjoying what a special place we live in. Knowing that over the years the event has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars – I look forward to sharing with you the final fundraising tally for the day! (See photos page 20)

Face of hope

Jackson Attwood isn’t your average 12-yearold boy, he’s already overcome some of life’s toughest hurdles and is a passionate advocater for the fight against cancer. Jackson was diagnosed with a brain tumour and given a 25 per cent chance of survival when he was just 18-months-old. He underwent two major surgeries, six months of chemotherapy, 12 months of radiation and came out on top. Now Jackson is keen to fight back against the disease in honour of all of those who have been affected. He’s been named Cancer Council’s Hinterland Face of Relay in recognition of his strength and effort to beat cancer. The Hinterland Relay For Life will be held at Beerwah Sports Grounds on the weekend of October 6 - 7 and Jackson couldn’t be keener to take part. Jackson’s mother, Lisa Attwood said their family were keen to do whatever they could to make a difference in the fight against cancer. “When Jackson was diagnosed with a brain tumour it hit our family very hard because there was very little information about that particular diagnosis available,” she said. “By taking part in Relay, raising awareness and funds for cancer research and support, we hope that we can find out more about the disease and how we can stamp it out. “This will be the first time we have taken part in Relay and I am looking forward to coming together with the community to help beat cancer and show support for other families, like my own, who have been affected by cancer,” she said. Cancer Council Queensland Relay for Life Coordinator Sara Morley congratulated Jackson on his well-deserved appointment. “Jackson inspires so many in his community with his determination to beat cancer,” she said. “All Queenslanders affected by cancer need the support of the community to cope with the challenges of a cancer diagnosis, treatment and recovery, and this is why Relay For Life means so much to many.”

Ms Morley encouraged the community to register and take part in the 2012 event. “The people of the Hinterland rely on us to help prevent, detect, effectively treat, and survive cancer, and community events such as Relay For Life allow us to continue this vital work,” she said. Olympian shares secrets of success with soccer juniors Last week, members of BeeGee juniors had the privilege of being amongst the first in the state to officially welcome home one of our 2012 Olympians, Andrew McCabe. Andrew, a member of the mens 4 x 100 metre relay team, which placed 8th in the final, took time out of his schedule ahead of the official welcome home parade in Brisbane to stop by the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club and share some tips on perseverance with the young soccer players. Andrew, the current Australian 200m champion, knows too well how persistence and the right

attitude can pay off, after battling injury and poor form to make it to the Olympics. Similarly, BeeGees juniors have had a mixed season, but towards the end of the season, their teamwork and attitude has started to pay off for some of the teams. After his team’s performance in London, Andrew and his fellow 100m relay teammates now have the honour of being ranked 8th in the world, and set an Australian and Oceanic record in the process. In the final, Andrew ran the same leg as Jamica’s Yohan Blake, so there was certainly plenty of interest and questions from the juniors.

Hope for Emily

At only 19-years-of age, Beerwah’s Emily Madden should be having the time of her life. The former OP 1 Beerwah High student, who has been studying at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music, is a talented musician, however most days, she struggles to get out of bed. For more than half of her young life, Emily has been battling a debilitating, life threatening illness, which has taken nine years to diagnose. Countless blood tests, doctors and hospital visits failed to determine the cause of her pain and suffering, the symptoms of which could fill three pages, including, but not limited to excruciating pain in all joints, bones, muscles, nerves and organs, migraines and severe head pressure, muscle weakness, fatigue, vertigo, noise and light sensitivity, chest and abdominal pain, and a number of neurological symptoms. Finally, however, in June this year, there was a breakthrough of sorts, when the results of her blood tests sent to the United States revealed she had Lyme Disease, and the co-infections Babesia and Bartonella. Lyme disease is caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi, and is thought to be transmitted following the bite of a tick that is infected with the Borrelia bacterium. So while Emily and her family took comfort in knowing her condition, thought to have been contracted from a tick bite back in 2003, in many ways the battle has only just begun. According to Emily’s mother Jenny, Lyme Disease is widely misunderstood by the medical fraternity in Australia, with many doctors not even believing that it exists here.

“Because of the lack of knowledge and the standard of testing for the disease often being inadequate, many patients remain undiagnosed, or receive an incorrect diagnosis,” Jenny said. She said the disease is often misdiagnosed as Multiple Sclerosis, Motor Neurone Disease, Parkinson’s, Autism, Alzheimers, Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Lupus, Rheumatoid Arthritis and psychiatric disorders, amongst others. “It is extremely important to obtain an early diagnosis if Lyme disease is suspected, because if detected early, it is usually cureable with short term antibiotics,” Jenny said. In Emily’s case, her only hope is to seek treatment at the St Georg Klinik in Germany, which specialises in environmental diseases, where she would receive whole-body hypothermia treatments, ozone and singulet oxygen treatments, infusions, magnetic field treatments, laser treatments, and detoxification. Unfortunately the extensive program of treatments is not available in Australia, so the family is hoping to fundraise to help raise some of the estimated $35,000 to send Emily to Germany to begin the treatment process. Emily said her priority was raising awareness of the disease. "It is vital that everyone, including health professionals, is aware of the existence of Lyme Disease in Australia and can recognise the symptoms, so that early diagnoses can be acquired and treatments administered quickly to avoid progression of the disease to its harder to treat 'late stage' form. If I were diagnosed nine years ago, I suspect I would be a very different person," she said.

"I always tried to keep my symptoms hidden from people, even those I was closest to. It's very hard to explain a disease with symptoms so constant and wide spread, especially when you've exhausted so many options in terms of medical professionals, some of whom make you feel crazy when they cannot understand what is wrong with you." Emily’s friends have set up a website where you can read more about her story, as well as information about Lyme disease and its co-infections. "I would love to see Emily well and free from this constant horrific pain and suffering. I hope that one day she'll be able to enjoy a normal life and follow her dreams," Jenny said. Artistic journey continues

Five minutes with …..

Jayne Wilson from Glass House Mountains Visitor Information Centre

How long have you been working at the centre? This is my fourth week of working for Sunshine Coast Destinations, sharing my time between the Glass House Mountains and Montville Visitor Information Centres. I generally work at Glass House on a rotating roster. So do you like working at Glass House Mountains more than at Montville? I am enjoying both centres as they have something different to offer the visitor, I have to say the facility at Glass House is amazing, a real asset for the local tourism community. We receive plenty of positive feedback from visitors, some people saying it is the best visitor information centre they have been to. Are you a hinterland local? I grew up on the coast and recently returned to live closer to my family after working in a similar tourism role in Bundaberg. I studied tourism and have been working in the industry for the past 12 years.

I remember as a kid coming to the hinterland for weekend drives, but it would be fair to say I have been on a steep learning curve. While the volunteers are happy to share their vast knowledge, I am really looking forward to getting out and finding out firsthand what makes the local area truly unique. While we are on the topic of volunteers – is the centre currently looking for any volunteers and what does being a volunteer involve? It would be great to recruit some additional volunteers. We need to have people who are available to work a four hour shift, weekly, fortnightly or monthly; the shifts are 9.00am – 1.00pm or 1.00pm – 5.00pm. The majority of our volunteers are retirees but we are more than happy to have people of any age; they just need to enjoy talking to people and sharing their knowledge of the local area with others. If people are interested what do they need to do to become a volunteer? All they have to do is call into the visitor centre, speak to the friendly staff and fill out a volunteer application form. So now that the Centre is being run by Sunshine Coast Destinations and not Council, what changes does this mean for how things are run? While the behind the scenes management might have changed, the actual day-to-day functions will be just the same. At the end of the day we all want the same thing, and that is to promote the local area to visitors.

Gallery Red Earth at Aussie World, Palmview will launch an exhibition entitled ‘Australian Journey Continues’ showcasing the work of late Landsborough resident Brian Allison on Friday, August 31 for a six week show. In 1991, at age 49, Brian relocated to the Sunshine Coast where he rapidly progressed from art student to tutoring, exhibiting and winning the first of many awards. His passion for art was inspired by his late greatgrandfather AW Eustace, a renowned bush artist and poet whose works are held in the National Gallery, Canberra. In 2007 Brian explained that the inspiration for his work came from the Australian landscape and its ever changing mood. “Old buildings, boats and people in their environmental situations interest me. Text, colour and depth of tone excites me,” he said. Watercolour was his interest, however this expanded to excellence in oil and pastel with many of his paintings depicting the diverse Australian landscape. His works are held in private collections and council acquisitions throughout Australia and overseas. Michelle King of Gallery Red Earth said it was a great honor to be exhibiting Mr Allison’s art works, some of which are award winning pieces. Gallery Red Earth is open seven days a week from 9.00am to 5.00pm.

Coochin Creek cascades It’s just a short hop skip and jump from suburbia, but it could be anywhere in the world. The Coochin Creek cascades, adjacent to Caralan Reserve in Beerwah, is one of Roger Callen’s favourite local places, and the next ‘hidden gem’ in Our Favourite Places series.

Capture the enjoyment of children as they learn first-hand about some of Australia’s magnificent wildlife. Needless to say, the camera wasn’t able to do credit when it came to capturing the joy, excitement and anticipation on the faces of the children at Glasshouse Mountains Early Learning Centre last week when Geckoes Wildlife Presentations made a visit. Jointly sponsored by GMAN and the childcare centre, the visit offered the children a unique opportunity to get up close and personal with some amazing animals, including a python, baby saltwater crocodile, a golden possum, a squirrel glider and a tawny frogmouth owl. GMAN’s Gwen Malcolm said the group had funded presentations by Geckoes in the past and were impressed by them. “Geckoes always target their presentations to suit their audience, and it’s a great way to introduce children to wildlife at a young age,” Gwen said. Roger said its uniqueness was one of the main reasons he started the Coochin Creek Bushland Group, which regularly meets in the area to tackle the weeds, and maintain and preserve the surrounding bushland. Cr Baberowski congratulated Roger on sharing such a "cracker" of a site. He said people will be amazed by the site, but he urged parents to ensure children remained appropriately supervised. Recently, Cr Baberowski, in conjunction with GCNews, launched the Our Favourite Places series as a way to encourage locals to get outdoors and celebrate our unique natural environment. Cr Baberowski kicked the series off with his own favourite spot, the camping grounds at Coochin Creek.

According to Roger, the cascades are a beautiful spot with interesting geology and landforms long used by local young people for swimming and recreation. “It’s such a unique area, with its cascades and pools, the big trees surrounding the area and its natural vegetation, and it's so close to town,” Roger said.

It is not often you hear this conversation at a school, “Mickey Mouse just knocked on the door and told Captain America to pass this book onto Puss in Boots”, but that is exactly what happened last Wednesday. Glasshouse Country Christian College’s Book Week culminated in a colourful and fanciful parade of 450 primary children dressed up as their favourite book character. The Disney princesses were well represented with a couple of Sleeping Beauties, a few Snow Whites and at least one Belle. Angelina Ballerina, Julius Ceasar from the ‘Rotten Rulers’ book, Madeline and her favourite nun, Pollyanna and Banjo Paterson all added to the day. Thing 1 and Thing 2 caused some drama (aka Mrs Vicki Childs and Mrs Belinda McWilliam) from Dr Seuss’s Cat in the Hat. This terrible twosome wreaked havoc, and poor Mr Bump (aka Mrs Heather Dodwell)

Thing 1 and Thing 2 took off with Mr Bumps crutches. L-R Belinda McWilliam, Heather Dodwell and Vicki Childs had her crutches stolen by the things and was most upset. Principal Mike Curtis dressed as Captain Nemo and said the Book Parade sends a powerful message to children about joining in, having fun, not worrying about staying cool and promoting the great gifts that books are.

The school P&C committee will present John with the name plaque at the assembly. All past and present students, together with all past and present parents and community members are invited to join the celebration to help farewell John. The assembly will commence at 2.15pm and be followed by an afternoon tea for all to share. We are sure that John will have many stories to share with the community on that day!

John Joseph, a well-known Mooloolah State School teacher, retired earlier this term after 27 years of outstanding service in education here, and more than 20 years of developing and promoting the beautiful rainforest that has become synonymous with our school throughout the community over the years. On Thursday, September 6, John will be honoured in a special assembly in the

At Beerwah State High School we have a rather large number of traditions that students and teachers take part in; one such tradition is run by Mr Bateman and Mr Budd. Now before I launch into the details, there are a few little nuggets of information that I would like to impart about the hosts of this practiced custom. There are different stages to knowing Mr Bateman and Mr Budd and they go in the following order: the two teachers who wear Hawaiian shirts a lot, the two teachers who wear Hawaiian shirts and are best buddies, the two maths and science teachers who wear Hawaiian shirts and are best buddies, and finally the teachers who know something about everything. Although the ‘everything’ they are most passionate about is astronomy (if the title didn’t give it away)! A couple of times a term this troublesome duo organise an astronomy evening for parents, students and teachers to attend. I have been once and it was an enjoyable experience where I learnt quite a bit. They know what they’re talking about that’s for sure, but there is one small problem with the astronomy nights. No matter what the forecast is the week before if Mr Bateman and Mr Budd choose to have their astronomy evening on that night it WILL rain. Or be extremely cloudy (but most likely rain). The amount of times this has happened is ridiculous. They could probably keep Beerwah and its surrounding areas out of a drought… So this is my promotional attempt and thanks to them for keeping the grass green and the dams full. Keep your eyes open for an astronomy evening; it’s worth it (even though it probably will be rescheduled).

Travelling Tales with Tony, Robyn and Anita Harvey Glasshouse Mountains local Tony Harvey is a firm believer in exploring your own country before heading overseas, and so for the past 20 years, he and his family have toured the nation. Usually, they travel by bus, however earlier this year, Tony, together with his wife Robyn and daughter Anita, opted for a different perspective of our beautiful country, taking to the skies in Tony, centre, and Anita, second from right, with a twin engine plane as their tour guides Graham and Deb at they headed out to the The Birdsville Hotel heart of Australia. Where did you go? The tour, which left from Brisbane, flew over the Carnarvon Gorge enroute to Longreach for an overnight stay, then across the Simpson Desert on the way to Coober Pedy for another overnight stay in an underground motel. The next day the tour headed to Yulara for a tour of Uluru (Ayers Rock) and dinner on the sand dunes to watch the sunset over the Olgas and the changing colours of Uluru (Ayers Rock). This was followed by three nights in Kununurra, which was home base, as the tour then headed over the rugged coastline to Broome and a sunset dinner at Cable Beach, a cruise on the Ord River and Lake Argyle. Then it was on to the home stretch, which featured the Kimberleys, the Bungle Bungles and Alice Springs. Last, but by no means least, was a stopover at the Birdsville Hotel for a farewell lunch. How long did you go for? Nine (perfect) days What were some of the highlights? For Tony, the highlight was the Ord River Cruise, in a high powered vessel that skimmed passengers across the water at 60 km/hour, while Robyn and Anita really enjoyed Uluru (Ayers Rock), with all its beautiful colours and magical history. The commentary was also excellent – very informative and educational, an absolute necessity when you are visiting new places. Most unusual experience? Getting flown home from the pub (at Cable Beach) in a 30 seater, twin engine plane. Tony can recall getting driven home from the pub, but not ever being flown home. Other information you would like to share with readers? TravelWest is doing the same trip again on September 10-18 (www. travelwest.com.au). It is a great company operating out of Charleville, and the owners, Graham and Deb, are your tour guides for the nine days. They certainly do things to perfection, as we have found out for ourselves after doing a few tours with them.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) has released the newest free online tool for using Census data. The new product, Table Builder Basic, allows registered users to search through a wider range of data than any free Census search tool available before. Director of 2011 Census Products and Services Alan Wong encouraged anyone who is interested in Census data to register for a Table Builder Basic account. “It’s an incredible product. With one quick search you can get information like an exact breakdown of languages spoken in every suburb across any town or city, or find out how many people were born in any country in the world for any area in Australia,” Mr Wong said. He said the internet is changing the way the ABS operates, including how data is made available to users and the public. “We saw around 30 per cent of Australians fill out their Census online in 2011, and now the internet is allowing us to make Census data openly available to more people than ever before. Census data is used to allocate around $45 billion worth of GST funding to the states and territories and helps decision makers plan for things like roads, schools and hospitals in all communities. Mr Wong added that everyone in Australia, not just Government, can easily access and benefit from Census data. “Census data is for everyone. Businesses, charities, community organisations, students, and individuals can use Census data for planning or to just get a better understanding of their community,” he said. To use Table Builder Basic you must register for a free account by following the steps on the ABS website. Simple online Table Builder Basic tutorials and a ‘how-to’ user guide are also available. We need better answers from council

Thanks Jenny McKay for responding in your column about the eyesore of a footpath going into Mooloolah. Your answer that “this road is a Main Roads responsibility” isn't exactly what the Main Roads confirmed? Yes, the road is their responsibility, but the footpath is the council’s responsibility. The fact that you have an issue with the resident’s houses being too close to the road to put in a footpath seems to be the problem. You would have thought that instead of ‘revisiting’ the issue this would have been looked into properly in the first place. I believe this project has been ongoing for nearly three years.... how much longer do you foresee this taking? And as for the “currently designated bus shelter in Martin Rungert Park” as you suggest? There isn’t one. The structure you speak of is not a bus shelter, in fact it wouldn't shelter anything in the rain and it is not even on the road that the bus stops at. According to the council there is no designated bus shelter in this park. So the recommended suggestion you asked me for, is please erect a proper bus shelter so our children do not need to hover outside the toilet block on a rainy day. Sam Mooloolah

Jewellery auction a success

Thank you to everyone who supported the Cancer Council Queensland at the recent jewellery auction in Peachester. Around 68 people attended the lunch and auction, and a great time was had by all. There are many I would like to thank for making the day such a success for without their generous donations and support we wouldn't have had such a wonderful event. I would like to thank the Peachester CWA ladies for putting on such a great lunch and making the tables look so lovely with flowers. (New members to the CWA are always welcome and if anyone is interested in finding out more about the CWA or becoming a member they should contact Coral Buetel on 5494 9775). Dry hands prevent spread of disease

In recent months we have been regularly regaled by health professionals to wash our hands properly because of the severity of the current influenza outbreak, and the fact the virus can be spread readily by hands. It is a pity that the advice is incomplete. Research reported several years ago, by Australian Environmental Health, emphasised the need to properly dry hands after washing. The research showed that drying hands under a hand dryer is not efficient in removing pathogens inevitably left on hands after washing.

Vigorously dry hands using a towel (Ok if dry and clean), or preferably using disposable paper towelling. The latter means is most important in a public place such as a busy shopping centre. Ted Prickett (MEHA Ret) (COF) Peachester

Luke is an inspiration

A few months ago I saw an article that the Glasshouse Country News wrote about the Fitness Matters gym and it was the photograph of Luke Christensen that urged me to read his story (GCNews, August 22). It gave me the courage to ring the gym and consequently join. I admire this young man tremendously and have been very fortunate to see him in action. This has inspired me to do better myself. I am very pleased to see that in a small way I can give back to him by donating to the fund because he is the one who without knowing it gave me the courage to join the gym Fitness Matters. The staff are always cheerful, happy and helpful and it would be great to know that Luke Christensen can continue to be with the people who help him achieve a great recovery. It’s not just the dogs

I would like to add a reply to C King’s comment about the dog poo (GCNews August 22). I agree with C King about the amount of dog poo on the paths walking to school through Mooloolah. I love living in this town but to see our footpaths being treated with such disrespect really annoys me. My walk to school is about 1 km along a very well serviced path, I would like to thank council for the regular cleaning that is taken place to remove the mould that builds up and I am sure that they would have to visit less often if people with animals would do the right thing. What I really hate more than dog poo on the path is horse poo. Yep that’s right, big, at times a metre long dribble of poo from horses being ridden on footpaths. There are very clear signs in town, ‘horses prohibited on footpaths’. I counted five separate droppings along my walk to school yesterday. If you must ride your horse on the footpath, look behind you every now and then to check for poo and clear it off the path. I am sick of hearing cries from my three kids that they have to dodge poo, it makes me not want to enjoy our lovely town and great weather and just get in my ozone spilling vehicle and add to the congestion at the school parking lot. A cold, bleak future?

I thank Jon Woodlands (GCNews, August 15) for his response to my letter about Global Warming. Clearly we see things differently, but at least the subject is being discussed without the political overtones seen, mainly in Australia. No one argues that there have not been warm periods before, but the fact that in the past 100 years (a very short time for these events) the earth’s temperature has risen by one degree centigrade. CSIRO has noted just this week evidence of the damage to the environment from this increase is now clear where it was not only three years ago. Science argues that seven billion people and massive industrialisation is largely to blame. They cite evidence that previous warming periods have coincided with the change from hunter/gathering to farming and animal husbandry i.e. humans do have an effect. I have ordered a copy of ‘Chill’ as suggested, but would urge everyone to spend $20.00 at Rosetta's bookstore to obtain ‘Storms of my Grandchildren’. The author is internationally recognised and has been for decades. James Hansen documents in great detail every conceivable climate measurement and research over 30 years. If it matters, he has often been called by the US congress to give evidence before them. He has now rebelled at the politics involved and has written his book to record the scientific facts as evidence for his grandchildren that he has tried to warn of the dangers we face by ignoring climate change. Originally he thought 2050 was the ‘tipping point’ but he and other scientists now believe they were too optimistic and change is occurring much quicker than they thought and we are approaching the point after which our earth is unable to recover.

We should not see anything strange about increased snow. Global warming is melting the tundra, glaciers and the ice caps and is increasing evaporation so there is much more moisture in the atmosphere (as we have found out in Queensland for the past three years). While extreme heat events are much more common now than extreme cold, when extreme cold conditions meet the extra moisture, record snow results. The British PM is one of those intelligent conservatives (like Malcolm Turnbull) who accepts the fact of climate change. Indeed he personally phoned Julia Gillard to congratulate her on passing the Carbon Tax legislation. Maybe there is hope, but I think it is all too late and we are condemning our own grandchildren to a bleak future. R Retsal Landsborough

State forest harvesting or total destruction of our forest

I have been a mountain bike rider for over 12 years. I ride from Peachester over Range Road to Mount Beerwah Road, what was once a quiet, lovely bush track bordering state forest and national park. I am horrified to see the total destruction of our state forest. The last four weeks the state forest has been harvested by the loggers, making wide tracks in every direction to get the big trees out. So much for the state forest, it’s the people's heritage; this belongs to our grandkids. This may sound right by the state government but that doesn't make it right for the people. Do your grandkids have to ask you, what’s a forest? Don't worry about the food supply for our birds, koalas and our other animals. It’s destroyed. It may take 100 years for these trees

Mooloolah Recreation Reserve

It was inspiring to meet with the Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network - a group of volunteers dedicated to the Glasshouse community and environment. They do a lot of great work on designing and constructing walking trails and provide constructive advocacy for our natural and cultural assets. I encourage people to visit GMAN’s website to see their program of activities and find out more about local flora and fauna. The meeting was held at the Glasshouse Mountains Ecolodge which has incredible views and an eclectic mix of accommodation. Imagination and style has transformed old timber railway carriages and an old church into cosy retreats nestled in the Glasshouse Mountains.

Place + Community input into Beerwah’s Place+ program has been translated into two concept designs by council. The concepts are being reviewed by state government stakeholders such as QRail and Main Roads although the current restructuring of state departments has presented a few communication challenges. It does provide an opportunity for renewed negotiations and input from the state into region changing projects. Our region has very strong state representation and that bodes well for transitioning the Beerwah community hub into a seriously well designed destination.

Community grants Council’s community grants are a great incentive to make that important project happen. It’s not too late for community organisations to apply for minor and major grants from $2,000 to $50,000 until September 1. I really want to thank everyone for their positive feedback to councils public consultation stand re: Draft Mooloolah Recreation Reserve Master Plan. We received lots of information, including many new ideas that had not previously been considered, and now have been included. About 60 people took the opportunity to give feedback over the two public consultation sessions, however if you didn’t have your say, we are still welcoming feedback. The proposed concept plan and a feedback forms are still available outside the Mooloolah Community Centre near the Mooloolah Community Op Shop, forms are also available on council’s web page. Once this information is collated, a report seeking endorsement of the Master Plan and the necessary funding for the implementation plan will go to council for consideration.

MP calls for community rallying over dangerous Beerwah intersection

Member for Caloundra Mark McArdle has called on the Beerwah community to band together to put the spotlight on a dangerous intersection bordering one of the area’s prominent primary schools. Last week Mr McArdle met with concerned residents at the intersection of Old Gympie Road/ Peachester Road, out the front of Beerwah State School. “There is no school crossing or a set of traffic lights allowing people, in particular school children, to cross safely,” Mr McArdle said. “Something needs to be done about this intersection before someone is seriously hurt.” Mr McArdle is urging local residents to contact his office and express their concerns in writing via email, caloundra@parliament.qld.gov.au or post, PO Box 3998, Caloundra DC Qld 4551. “What we also need is someone who is willing to put their hand up to become a principal petitioner and start a petition urging authorities to act on this intersection. “As the local member for the area I am more than happy to help do this by sponsoring the petition and lodging it in Parliament.” Mr McArdle recently helped the community rally over a notorious intersection at Landsborough, Steve Irwin Way/Hardwood Road and Railway Street, resulting in the Department of Transport and Main Roads announcing it would fast-track the installation of traffic lights at the intersection by two years, with construction set to start early next year.

Queensland home buyers retreated from the property market in the June quarter as they waited for the return of stamp duty concessions but house prices held their ground, according to the latest Real Estate Institute of Queensland (REIQ) data. The REIQ June quarter median house price report, released recently, shows house prices remaining steady in the face of lower sales activity across the State. REIQ CEO Anton Kardash said there was a noticeable slow-down in activity from May to June. “The State Government introduced legislation into parliament in mid-May to reinstate the Principal Place of Residence concession on stamp duty from July 1 this year,” he said. “The return of the concession meant home buyers, who were not first-timers or investors, could save up to $7,000 from July 1, so it is little wonder that many decided to delay their purchases until after that date. “Even though sales activity was lower in the month of June in particular, our June quarter data found no significant variations on median prices which means our market is still holding up well. The four rate cuts since November are also starting to have a positive effect on the market.” According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the number of homes financed to non-first home buyers in Queensland decreased 12.8 per cent between May and June this year. The median house price in Brisbane decreased 1 per cent to an even $500,000 over the June quarter. The top performing major region over the June quarter was Moreton Bay which recorded median house price growth of 5.3 per cent to $379,000. Outside of the southeast, Townsville recorded median house price growth of 4.2 per cent to $375,000 over the June quarter. Townsville’s economy continues to fair well due its mix of industries. Glasshouse Country Ministers Fellowship Chris Johnson Glasshouse Country Baptist Church The New Testament tells us that a number of the first followers of Jesus, Peter, James and John come from a place called Bethsaida, at the bottom of a valley that runs into the Sea of Galilee. At the top of this valley is a place called Gamla, a town built on a very steep hill with a population of about 15,000 people. It was built with one purpose in mind – to hold off the Romans. Gamla was a city full of good Jewish people who hated the Romans, and their goal was to fight the Romans so they would go home. Within one generation of Jesus in 67 AD, these anti Roman freedom fighters got their wish. The Romans smashed down their fortified walls and invaded the city. Rather than submit to the Romans, 5,000 of the local inhabitants threw themselves off the steep cliffs into the valley below. The name given to these anti Roman freedom fighters are Zealots.

The people in Jesus’s day were hoping that one day God was going to come and re-establish his kingdom. The trouble was the people were thinking like the people of Gamla, that God was going to throw out the Romans and replace their ruler with a Jewish ruler. Along comes Jesus and he does the things we expect God to do, but he also teaches that God’s kingdom is not about power and authority and prestige, but it's also spiritual, that God is ultimately concerned with our relationship to Him. Kingdoms come and kingdoms go because they are manmade, God’s kingdom remains forever because it is made by God. Jesus asked the question, what does it profit for a man to gain the whole world yet lose himself? So often we live and act and think as if this world with all its shiny stuff is the one that is the most important. Jesus reminds us that there is a world which is much more significant and important. We can’t see it yet but it is real, nonetheless.

Glasshouse Hinterland Lions were crowned 2012 Under 18 Division Two North Premiers earlier this month, downing Maroochydore Roos 13.11.89 to 8.7.55. The Lions came into the grand final as the strong favourites with an average winning margin during the home and away season of 104 points. Having defeated the Roos in the semi-final by 125 it looked likely to be plain sailing for the Lions, but the Roos had other intentions. With an inspiring start, the Roos jumped out of the blocks early with six scoring shots resulting in two goals, the Lions had a few shots on goal but none through the big sticks until late in the quarter. Leading by five at the first break, the Roos were again accurate in front of goals kicking away to a 23 point lead during the second term until the Lions pegged back three late goals to trail by 10 at the main break. The Roos continued to come hard at the Lions in the third quarter but kicked their only goal for the term early in the first few minutes.

The third quarter was an arm wrestle for some time with solid pressure from both sides across the ground. Mid way through the third, Glasshouse finally strung a few goals together with relentless pressure from Dan Kelly and Alex Robertson in the midfield to give them a three point lead at the last change. The last quarter was all the Lions with numbers in the mid field preventing any forward attacks from the Roos. The Lions then piled on four unanswered goals taking a commanding lead. With six minutes to go the Roos had a sniff at a comeback kicking a goal bringing the margin back to 21 with plenty of time to spare. To the credit of the Lions they did not let that rattle them and continued to cap off the game with another two goals to take out the title by 34 points. It looks like Huey is leaving us alone for a while and we had a great field of 112 players in our ‘Invite the Men Day’ on Thursday. We played a 2 Ball Best Ball Stableford, and everyone had a great time, none more than Kathy Stern and her partner, Dale Ross, who came in with a whopping score of 51 points. They were followed closely by Marjorie Pavitt and her partner Harold Burke with an impressive 50 Stableford points. The NTP's went to Sue and Geoff Williamson, Harry and Rose Ballard, and Barbara Foy and Kaye Jansen. The day was such a success that we will be holding more next year. Saturday saw 78 golfers compete in the rescheduled Mixed Foursomes Championships. This is an Honour Board event, held over 27 holes. The winners of the 27 hole competition were Joel Boorer and Hollie Sinclair with a total score of 118 off the stick. They were followed by Club President Geoff Williamson and his wife Sue, who is also the Treasurer of the Ladies Committee. They scored a 27 hole total of 126 off the stick. Winners of the Nett event were Marie Goyder and Russ Tillyard with a Nett 27 hole score of 101 1/4, with runners up being Ally Smerdon and Mark Warry on 108 1/2 Nett. NTP's were Jen Kelly on 2 and 16, Bob Howe on 5, Ally Smerdon took out 18, Joel Boorer got the 20th and Di Smith was closest on the 23rd. Until next week, take care and good golfing.

Thanks Colin – you made a real difference It was a sad day last Thursday when the news came in that Colin Campbell had died after his short battle with cancer. I was lucky to cross paths with Colin quite a bit during my years working in State Government, at Caloundra Council and then here with Glasshouse Country News. Being from a strong gardening and farming family, Colin would always like to hear about my side of life, which is a quality that endeared him to many – his genuine interest in others. Many Glasshouse Country locals would remember him (and his old hat) from the times he fronted the garden expo at Beerwah. Colin would captivate the audience with his knowledge, anecdotes and sense of humour, but was always just as enthusiastic to speak with people afterwards. As GCNews is being delivered (Wednesday), Colin’s funeral is being held at Nambour. I’m sure it’ll be an unqualified celebration of his amazing life. A life which has definitely made a difference locally, nationally and globally.

A true gentleman and an absolute inspiration, Colin will be sadly missed by every gardener, myself included.

L is for Leptospermum

Leptospermum or the Tea-Tree is a genus of plants containing over 80 species, most of which are endemic to Australia. They can exist in a wide range of conditions from coastal heath land to ragged mountain ranges and from dry Eucalypt forests to rocky watercourses. Their heights vary from ground covers to 10 metre high trees. The common name, Tea-Tree, refers to the practice of early settles when they soaked the leaves of some species in water as a substitute for regular tea. Tea-Trees have aromatic oils in their leaves, some having a lovely lemon scent. Tea-Tree oil, however, is extracted from the leaves of a Melaleuca species and not Tea-Trees. The genus name is derived from the Greek words leptos, meaning slender and sperma, meaning seed, referring to the fine slender brown seeds found in the seed capsules. Most Leptospermum species flower in spring and summer, though some flower a second time in autumn.

The blooms are distinctly representative of the Myrtaceae family with five petals in shades from white through to dark pink. Some species have single flowers while others have clusters of blooms in such profusion that the plant appears to be covered in snow. Leptospermum can handle a wide range of soil conditions and can survive flooding though they will suffer from constantly wet or heavy clay soils. Leptospermum are susceptible to some pests and diseases. Scale can weaken the plant and cause a heavy coating of sooty mould. Spray with a pest oil when the scale are seen. Tea-Tree Web Moth is another common problem on many species, forming a dry web mass full of brown dust within the canopy of the plant. The webbing can be removed from the plant, though it should be disposed of in the bin or a fire. Some pesticides are also effective. Planting Tea-Trees in your garden will not only delight you and your guests when they are in flower, they will also delight the hundreds of bees who are attracted by the nectar.
