Hi Everyone... As a regular attendee at local Dawn services, which I might just remind people usually happen at 4.15am, I like the gentle quiet as you arrive at the service in the total dark and also the sense of comradery you share with the others that attend even if you don’t speak to them. So it was not surprising to see the sense of community that was created in so many local streets at 6am last Saturday morning, with neighbours coming together and acknowledging the sacrifice of others. What really impressed me was also the creative energy that people put into setting the scene, creating props, making wreaths and putting together their own elements to the morning.

I really enjoyed hearing the Last Post being played on all sorts of instruments, while I do love the bugle and the bagpipes played at our normal services, there is something about hearing the Last Post on a violin or an electric guitar that it pretty special. We put the call out on Facebook on Friday night for locals to share with us photos of their day and boy did we get a great response! We have incorporated as many as possible in this week’s pages, thanks to all of those that shared this special and rather memorable ANZAC Day.

Local News COVID restrictions starting to ease Following encouraging signs Queensland is flattening the COVID-19 curve, last Sunday Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk announced some of the stay at home restrictions will ease. From 11.59pm Friday May 1, Queenslanders will be able to leave their homes for recreation and the distance they can travel has been extended. For example, Queenslanders will be able to enjoy some relief from stay at home rules and: • Go for a drive; • Ride a motorbike, jetski or boat for pleasure; • Have a picnic; • Visit a national park; and • Shop for non-essential items But there are three conditions that apply to the above: • Social distancing and hygiene must be maintained; • You have to stay within 50km of home; and • Outings are limited to members of the same household or an individual and one friend.

All other rules including gatherings and limits on visitors remain in place during this time. The Premier said the number of new infections would be watched closely, and the measures reviewed after two weeks. “The first sign of a spike we will not hesitate to clamp back,” the Premier said. “This is a test-run to see what effect easing restrictions has on the containment of COVID-19. “I encourage all Queenslanders to back this first step so that we can keep the virus away and help everyone start to get their lives back.” Health Minister Steven Miles said Queensland had earned a reward for its hard work. “We have done the right thing,” the Minister said. “We have to keep doing it.” Chief Health Officer Dr Jeannette Young supported the new measures. “Before, you couldn’t leave home unless it was for essential reasons like getting groceries or exercising or going to work and you had to stay in your suburb where

possible,” Dr Young said. “Now we are saying you can have more flexibility, but remember, we are still having to stop the spread of COVID-19.” State Disaster Co-ordinator Steve Gollschewski said police will assist people to understand the new rules but will still enforce flagrant breaches. “Police will be understanding, but this isn’t an invitation for people to undo everyone’s hard work,” he said. The Premier said she hoped easing restrictions would mean some older Queenslanders could finally leave their homes. “They can go for a drive to Mt Coot-tha or a national park or a beach in their region, but they still have to avoid crowds,” the Premier said. “I know this isn’t returning life to normal again but we are still in the midst of a pandemic and we still have to be careful.”

Will you be downloading the new COVIDSafe contact trace app? By Sonia Clark

Recently launched by the Australian Federal Government, the contact tracing app (COVIDSafe) is been promoted as a way of reducing the spread of COVID-19, and a tool towards confidently enabling the easing of the current social restrictions. Australians are being urged to voluntarily download the new app to their Android or Apple (iOS) smartphone as a way of protecting family, friends and loved ones, while also saving the lives of others. While uptake is completely voluntary, it has been strongly recommended by the Prime Minister Scott Morrison, Health Minister Greg Hunt, Chief Medical Officer Brendan Murphy, and a host of other government officials and health professionals. Ideally the government is hoping at least 40% of Australians will download the app, which will enable state and territory health officials to quickly contact people who may have been exposed to COVID-19. Community conversation seems to be divided between concerns around rapid rollout, personal data collection, privacy and the use of surveillance tools, against a genuine desire to contain the coronavirus

and ensure greater public safety. For many, to download the app appeals to a strong sense of common sense and civic duty - where people are urged to do the right thing for the collective good and to save lives. It is relatively straightforward with users asked to register their name, mobile number, age range and postcode to generate an encrypted reference code. The basic idea is that through Bluetooth technology, when someone comes into close contact for 15 minutes or more with someone else who has the app, the encrypted details will be recorded. The information will be securely encrypted and stored for 21 days on registered users’ phones and then deleted if no contact with confirmed COVID-19 cases has occurred. If someone is tested

positive to COVID-19, they will then be asked for consent to provide the encrypted data to a national server to enable state and territory authorities to conduct rapid contact. Information contained in the information storage system will be destroyed at the end of the pandemic, and users can delete the app at any time. So will you be downloading the app? and why? While many will be happy to embrace technology that can enable greater public health safety, others are raising alarm bells about the potential misuse of ever-increasing government control and surveillance. Will the app improve health outcomes and save lives? Do you think is should remain voluntary? Hinterland councillor appointed as new Deputy Mayor

Division One Councillor Rick Baberowski has become the Sunshine Coast’s new Deputy Mayor having been elected by his council colleagues in a unanimous vote at last Thursday’s post-election meeting in Caloundra. The appointment was made at the first live-streamed Sunshine Coast Council meeting due to social distancing requirements as a result of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. On acceptance, Deputy Mayor Baberowski thanked his fellow councillors for their support saying he was honoured and grateful.

“All of the councillors have valuable experience and important contributions to make to all of our debates,” Cr Baberowski said. He acknowledged his predecessor, former Cr Tim Dwyer, and said his appointment was an important symbol as he was the first hinterland based Deputy Mayor of the Sunshine Coast Council. “I want to thank my colleagues for showing that this council is not controlled, as some people think, by a coastal block and that the hinterland is recognised as an important part of the region,” he said.

Fatal traffic crash, Mooloolah Valley

Police are investigating a fatal crash involving a car and mobility scooter in Mooloolah Valley on Monday morning. Stan Kruger (90) had been riding his mobility scooter when he exited the service station onto Mooloolah Road and was struck by an oncoming vehicle. The Mooloolah Valley man suffered significant injuries and was transported to Sunshine Coast University Hospital where he was pronounced deceased. The driver of the car, a 42-year-old Mooloolah Valley man, was not injured in the crash. Police are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the incident or have dashcam footage to come forward. The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating. COVID-19 guidelines for rental property owners and tenants After a rocky start, the State Government has finalised their approach in support of the National Cabinet’s decision to place a moratorium on residential tenancy evictions. The Palaszczuk Government’s initial approach drew fierce criticism from the Real Estate Industry of Queensland (REIQ). REIQ CEO Antonia Mercorella said the original package had a sweeping range of tenancy protections and while the REIQ was supportive of tenants, they left property owners short. The REIQ initiated the campaign ‘Everyone matters in real estate,’ taking out full page advertisements in metropolitan newspapers and instigating an ultimately successful letter-writing campaign targeting state government members. Minister for Housing and Public Works Mick de Brenni last week published the Residential Tenancies Practice Guide, following the passing of the COVID-19 Emergency Response Act in Parliament, which allows government to enact emergency COVID-19 regulations. Minister de Brenni said that the government had taken into account concerns from Queensland property owners

and tenants; and was bolstering its support to make sure that everyone could get through this difficult time. “Working with industry stakeholders, a Residential Tenancies Practice Guide COVID-19 for property owners and tenants has been developed,” he said. Minister de Brenni said the Practice Guide would help property owners and their tenants in their discussions to negotiate a way through the next six months. “For those that need it, we’ve provided the detail to help Queenslanders understand their rights, assist in discussions about their individual circumstances, be they lessor or lessee, and assist in coming together in collaboration to new agreements where necessary.” The key outcome for financially stressed renters is that the response puts a freeze on evictions due to rent arrears for six months (from March 29) due to the impacts of COVID-19. “These are a temporary set of measures to ensure tenants and owners are protected during this pandemic,” Minister de Brenni explained.

“Tenants who are suffering or who have suffered excessive hardship because of COVID-19 who cannot meet their rent commitments cannot be evicted or listed in a tenancy database because of that suffering.” A summary of the guidelines includes: • A renter must be able to prove a 25% reduction in income or that the rent makes up more than 30% of their income, to apply for rental concessions. • Tenants and owners have to agree on the terms of reduced rent and deferred payment conditions. • Before a tenant can break a tenancy, they must prove a 75% reduction in income and have less than $5,000 in savings. • Clear guidance on property access for the sale of the property, virtual rental inspections and for essential repairs and maintenance. • A fixed term tenancy will automatically be extended to September 30 2020, unless agreed otherwise. Council meetings now go live to air In response to COVID-19 restrictions and to accommodate safe social distancing, the Sunshine Coast Council (SCC) has begun to livestream their monthly ordinary meetings. Even though the public gallery may be temporarily closed to the community, we can all keep an eye on what happens at the council meeting just by checking into the council’s YouTube channel. The new council has five new councillors, including Winston Johnston representing Division 5. As a new council, they have a daunting job ahead of them guiding the organisation through the treacherous waters of the COVID-19 environment. A significant part of Thursday’s meeting has been allocated to discussing council’s COVID-19 response, as developed by council’s Local Disaster Management Group (LDMG). In response to Queensland Health identifying that the region was likely to be affected by the virus into the foreseeable future, the council moved to STAND UP activation status on March 23, enabling

Working alongside the LDMG and Council’s Executive Leadership Team, two COVID-19 internal council groups are supporting the work of the LDMG. The COVID-19 Control Group is comprised of the Mayor, Deputy Mayor (Division 1’s Cr Rick Baberowski) and key council leadership staff. This group meets twiceweekly providing direction, resources and ensuring open communications. The COVID-19 Working Group comprising nominated SCC managers and key operative staff; it similarly meets twiceweekly and serves to drive the operational

elements of the COVID-19 response. These groups have led key actions and responses including closure of community facilities, suspension of paid parking, transfer of some programs and services online, and the introduction of a staged economic stimulus program. The cost of the COVID-19 response to council through to June 30 is projected to be approximately $8 million. The next ordinary meeting is scheduled for this Thursday April 30, and if you’d like to watch the livestream, you can do so by viewing the embedded video which goes at 8.50am on Thursday.

Posties retrain for parcel boom Last week, Australia Post announced they will retrain 2,000 motorbike posties to deliver and process parcels to help manage the unprecedented parcel volumes being sent across the country, as the business continues to manage significant disruption as Australians adapt to living differently under COVID-19 restrictions. Australia Post have said that they welcome the federal government’s recent announcement to provide temporary changes to delivery standards so they can continue to service the broader needs of the community as quickly as possible. The temporary changes include removing the manually intensive ‘Priority Mail’ letter product, and adjustments have been made to the existing service standards on other letters which will mean Australia Post will deliver letters in metropolitan areas every second day. They have also extended the required delivery time for regular intrastate letters to five days after the day of posting. Parcel volumes have almost doubled in the last four weeks, up by 80% compared to last year, as more and more householders shop online as they self-isolate. At the same time, demand for other core products including letters, have been volatile and many have halved. Adding to Australia Post’s challenges is the impact of significantly reduced air freight availability due to the reductions of passenger planes and the need to prioritise transport of medical supplies. Although Australia Post has secured more capacity from Qantas, and have welcomed recent announcements from the federal government to support more domestic flights, these cannot ensure the speed of deliveries at the same level as prior to the crisis.

The Maleny Chamber of Commerce understands that many of the local cafés and restaurants have been doing it tough in the last few weeks and as a way of shining a light on the efforts many have been making to keep their business sustained, are running a promotion where one lucky entrant will receive a $100 gift voucher to spend in the Maleny café / restaurant of their choice. Zonta Club of the Blackall Range

You can’t keep good women down! Zonta Blackall Range has not suspended operations during this time of isolation, they are continuing their meetings on Zoom. Zonta District 22 (consisting of 44 clubs throughout Queensland) has set up a Zoom account and clubs book their meetings through that platform. President Judith Ross-Smith said it was a bit like the proverbial curate’s egg (‘good in parts’). “One of the problems is that many of our clubs have meetings on the same evening, so you have to get in early to book your meeting. It is not always possible to secure your time so we have to make adjustments; but that is a small price to pay for keeping Zonta alive in Queensland. “We are getting better at managing the format, members are embracing the medium and we are having a lot of fun looking at ourselves on the screen as we try to hear what everyone is saying. “We will be holding our AGM on Zoom next month, and that will be a challenge. We won’t be able to have the ceremony of the changeover we usually have, but we will be able to vote in our new board that will lead the club for our 2020-2021 year.

“It will be much more challenging when the cancelled biennial International Convention that was to have been held this year in Chicago, has to be held over some online medium they have to arrange. “There is a lot of voting for the incoming international board with multiple candidates for each position. There will be a representative from each of the 1,200 clubs throughout the world all sitting at a screen and following some complicated procedures. “It will be a nightmare for our head office, but it, too, will go ahead,” said Judith. At their first Zoom meeting, the club had voted to make the first donation to their new major project, the Maleny temporary accommodation for women and children managed under the auspices of the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre. “Also called the Women’s House, this is a short-term refuge for homeless women. Zonta is particularly pleased to be supporting this facility as homeless women, especially those over 55, is one of the most vulnerable groups in the community today,” said Judith. In the next couple of months, unless the assembly restrictions are lifted, Zonta Blackall Range will be organising their annual ‘Birthing Kit’ packing, at home.

where the Grass is greener Our Journey to Landsborough By Bev Rickertt Hello, pleased to introduce ourselves to you, our new community. Early this year we moved to Landsborough, which we now proudly call home, from Rockhampton in central Queensland. What made us choose Landsborough as our new home? Well, grab a cuppa, and a comfy seat, and let me take you on a brief journey... I was born in and grew up in central western New South Wales. Oh yes, a “cockroach”. Well, not for many years now! Having grown up on a sheep, cattle and grain farm between Condobolin and Tottenham, attended school in Bathurst, university in Armidale, and general nursing training in Goulburn. I yearned for adventure and exploration, and in the early 1980’s found myself living and working in Rockhampton, central Queensland, which became home for these many years past. So, I’m almost a Queenslander! My nursing career expanded over the years through hospital work, midwifery, and community health nursing. I completed my vocation with 11 years as a school-based youth health nurse in state high schools, supporting teenagers with self-advocacy for their personal health. Let me introduce hubby, Trevor Rickertt, who was born in central Queensland, and grew up on a cattle property near Clermont. Trev’s employment journey took him through a myriad of developmental experiences ranging from apprentice to qualified mechanic, business management of tyre and wheel alignment services, learner-driver education, then into a university teaching qualification and ultimately becoming a high school principal.

We are proud parents of three sons, two daughters, and six adorable grandchildren. Our journey to Landsborough began during the 1980’s. Yes, that long ago! Hubby purchased a second-hand vehicle in Brisbane and when driving it homewards, decided to detour via the mountains just to see the scenery. Travelling anywhere has always been about the journey, not solely the destination. Having never before ventured onto the Blackall Range, from this introductory viewing it was love at first sight. There began the journey towards “one day” living in this part of our amazingly beautiful and diverse country, which we are so privileged to call our homeland. Much water has passed under bridges since the 1980’s, and many life changes have occurred, complete with total paradigm shifts. However, the desire, the goal, the aim, the intention, and the commitment toward one day living somewhere on or near the Blackall Range never faltered. Over the past 15 years, the plans to live here became gradually and persistently firmer as time passed. Many, many holidays have been spent in the locality, from atop the Blackall range to the seaside nearby. We were constantly searching as well as indulging our imagination in picturing ourselves living here “one day”. We would walk the streets of Maleny and Beerwah, imagining that we lived in a house nearby, and that these shops and restaurants were our local fare. We would look up to the mountain range from the veranda of holiday accommodation on the coast and say to each other “There’s our (one-day) home, up there”. During the middle of 2019 we specifically drove from Rockhampton to Beerwah to view a prospective purchase.

Bev and Trevor Rickertt That house was not meant to be, but as we drove homewards, we passed the house which has become ours. Fortunately, on that day, the agent was available to show us through the house, and we formalised our commitment that very day. We returned to Rocky on that Sunday with elated hopes and dreams but had to ‘come back to earth’ quick-smart to resume our work commitments. Fast forward to December 2019 and we both decided to retire from our workplaces. As much as we were deeply involved with our respective work, workplaces, and work colleagues, nevertheless it was clear to us that ‘our time’ had arrived, and we needed to move permanently to our new forever home. So we packed up our goods and chattels, the dog and the cat, and we moved to our wonderful home in Landsborough. Now we are settling into our lovely new surroundings, and despite the COVID-19 isolation and separation requirements, we are still loving where we are. We have excellent neighbours, a lovely neighbourhood where there’s little traffic noise but abundant bird-life with their sweet songs and calls. The climate is so

temperate and easy to live in. We have a grand yard where we are planning our vegetable gardens, and we are keen as mustard to be able to explore our surrounding neighbourhoods more and more. During holiday stays over the years we have thoroughly revelled in exploring the countryside and many townships of the hinterland and coast. We could probably be loosely-termed “closet hippies” (outwardly conservative, inwardly alternative) as we are creative, artistic, and sometimes tend toward “the third dimension” with ideas, so perhaps this is part of the strong initial attraction to this area, as well as Trevor’s Germanic heritage.

Trevor is a musician and keen photographer, as well as a long-term woodworker, so there is much inspiration to be had in our new locale. Over many, many years, Trevor has been consistently cultivating his love of landscape photography and is intent upon expanding this interest into an occupation. I am an avid sewer, mainly of clothing, and have many craft projects I am keen to instigate. We both enjoy attending markets and plan to contribute to these as well. In a nutshell, we have settled where we were drawn to, and look forward to a brimming life - full of experiences in this locality.

Community News Pampered Pooch inspires adventure tale By Sonia Clark In last week’s edition of GC&M News we included a letter from Sandra Poole from Peacheser who has a very talented dog, Banjo, that enjoyed bringing in the GC&M News before we went online. Sandra shared a little of Banjo’s story, which is now a published book, and we thought readers would be keen to know more. Based on the true events of a pampered pooch that went missing in the Hinterland bush for ten days, ‘Banjo and the Long Ago Dog’ is a 40-page children’s chapter book published by Sandra. Inspired by the disappearance and eventual reunion of her family’s much loved stumpy-tailed cattle dog Banjo a few years back, Sandra thought the story would be a great survival adventure tale for young readers. Sandra said that although she had previously dabbled in writing poetry and some smaller freelance articles, she had never previously published a book. It was from the suggestion of friends from her local Landcare group who were familiar

with the story that Sandra decided to write the tale. A volunteer at Mary Cairncross reserve, Sandra also wanted to encourage younger readers to get out and explore the uniqueness of the local flora and fauna, while appreciating the cultural and historical significance of the area to the Indigenous Jinibara people. “I hope this book inspires curiosity and acceptance that others like the Jinibara people were here before us, and that younger readers will explore the local bushland and see the area with new appreciation.” said Sandra. Originally, Sandra had planned to write the book as an illustrated story, and took the idea and initial draft to well-known local author Jill Morris, who suggested she instead expand the story and redraft it as a first reader chapter book for younger children. Sandra hopes that when the COVID-19 restrictions are lifted, she would love to do local readings for children with the ‘star’ Banjo at her feet. The book is currently available in electronic form and can be purchased

Vale Neil Lovett Neil Lovett of Glass House Mountains passed away in the middle of April and a good friend of Neil’s, Ken Barker, has contributed the following story about Neil’s passing and the legacy he leaves behind. Neil Lovett was a good friend of mine. His first words to me outside the cricket nets at the Maleny showgrounds were, “You don’t want to play that (cricket).” Commenting later, he said what I was just thinking at the time, that, obviously 60 or older, I was too old for it. He talked me into playing croquet instead, at the croquet lawn just 50 metres away. I was inducted into the “Bad Boys Club” which met for a counter lunch at the Maleny Hotel every Sunday before games began at 1.30pm and, in this way, learnt many unwritten rules and tradition, but mostly the enjoyment of the game along with being treated to a multitude of other stories. Neil would drive up from Glasshouse where he had a property which he kept mainly for the entertainment and sustenance of his many and varied spoilt chooks, some of which won him prizes in the Maleny Show. He enjoyed good food and drink, and knew all the places in Glasshouse and as far

afield as Caloundra and Maleny, where it could be bought. Neil also engaged in the political process, working on polling booths and, more importantly, discussing politics in a rational way. He had many friends, including the people in his street, and lived well. We would take tea with him at his home where I was amazed by the etiquette involved. Was it one turn clockwise and half a turn anticlockwise of the pot? The best tea and the finest whisky could be found at his place. He came from South Australia where he went to school and university, qualifying and serving as a teacher for a number of years before arriving in Queensland and digging in here. He worked as a lexicographer for Jacaranda Press when they were in the process of developing what became the Macquarie dictionary. He travelled around Australia photographing wildflowers and took several trips abroad. Neil enjoyed life. He was a gentleman. Neil on the his 80th birthday It is ironic that somebody who was as good with words as he was could rather wicked sense of humour, some great not have his life described adequately by stories both wonderfully told - and some them. Labor Candidate for Caloundra I have lived in Caloundra since I was a youngster and I have to admit that our community response to the COVID-19 virus restrictions, in Caloundra and on the whole Sunshine Coast, has not really surprised me. Two thumbs-up to everyone, from the PM, the Premier and their outstanding medical experts, to each and every one of us. Keep up the good work. If we continue to listen to the experts and act on the advice of Premier Palaszczuk, all the signs will remain positive. If COVID-19 has shown us anything, it’s how important the people in our lives are to us - even if we’ve been forced to communicate with some of our loved ones via electronic devices. Thanks to the good management and forethought of the State Government, we have had top-line medical staff and stateof-the-art health facilities available to us, from a fever clinic in Caloundra to the Sunshine Coast University Hospital and its wonderful health precinct in Kawana. It is great to see that everyone is working for everyone else and Governments are working together. I would like to see more of that!

Unfortunately, the Federal Government’s decision to draw a line at supporting casual workers who have been at their workplaces for less than 12 months is unfair. It’s meant that over 17,000 of Caloundra and Sunshine Coast casual workers - many who have families have not had access to the JobKeeper arrangements. And have our local LNP MPs been fighting for these 17,000 Sunshine Coast workers and their families? No. The fact is, we will need an enthusiastic and talented casual workforce to help restart our economy when this challenge is over. Finally, I am pleased to see that a promise I made during the 2017 State Election is now happening. The Peachester Road and Old Gympie Road intersection upgrade is due to commence soon. This upgrade will cater to increasing traffic volumes around Beerwah by increasing capacity and providing a safer intersection for all road users and students attending Beerwah State School. ROSE helping people stay connected By Sonia Clark Have you heard about the new RangeCare Online Social Engagement (ROSE) project? This great initiative provides a supportive and practical way for RangeCare clients to access the wonderful world of online connection and technology all from the comfort of home. Blackall Range Care Group (BRCG) IT advisor Frank Vos, said the ROSE project launch followed on from a successful pilot program initially trialled 12 months ago, as a way to boost social engagement and to address challenges of social isolation for clients who spent much of their time at home. “What we found from our pilot program was that once we could set people up with access to technology, and set them supported tasks to build their understanding of what could be done virtually, they were able to adapt to the technology and build their confidence relatively quickly over a few months, which was wonderful,” said Frank. Another positive finding was that while online engagement allowed clients access to social activities facilitated by RangeCare, the technology also allowed them to connect with others who had similar interests – effectively providing an additional layer of social activity.

“We are now in the process of rolling out this initiative, with feedback to date incredibly positive,” said Frank. “Client’s at home can be connected with us, as well as with family and friends, to be socially active, entertained and informed.” To kickstart the ROSE project, RangeCare has accessed 50 new iPads and data packs to lend for free to clients who may not have their own devices. ROSE also offers free internet access options, a BRCG client email address, as well as free in-home technical support and support team to assist with Gmail and apps such as Google Meet, to help clients stay connected. By Sonia Clark On our ‘You Said It’ page this week, we published a poignant poem by Lisa Falcongreen that had been submitted by her mum Narelle Francis. We thought we would reach out to Lisa, who is based in Witta, to find out more about what inspired her to write such a heartfelt poem in response to the current world events concerning coronavirus. Lisa said that she has always had an interest in writing, and would write stories and poems at school, and then later as a young woman. Since then, family and life commitments took over from more imaginative pursuits, and Lisa said that up until recently she hadn’t written something creatively for almost 15 years. A huge animal lover, with a fairly impressive menagerie on her family farm including donkeys, cows, dogs, chickens, ducks and assorted native wildlife, Lisa said she drew inspiration for the poem as a hopeful guide for humans from her observations of the animal world around her. She felt humans could benefit from taking a few good lessons from animals, which exist in harmony with the natural environment, and the many ways they show respect for resources and the intricate balance of nature. “With our need to consume, profit and overuse resources, I wonder if humans have gone against the natural order, and maybe this current situation is a wonderful opportunity to reevaluate our value systems and appreciate each other and what we actually have more,” said Lisa. Lisa said she felt although the current situation appeared dire, she believed there is hope, with a refocus on the simpler things in life and what truly matters to people being the way forward. Another positive she has found is that like many other Hinterland residents, this crisis has brought to light a greater appreciation of where we live and the realisation that despite the considerable challenges for many, we are all incredibly lucky and blessed to live where we do. Living - Arts Art in a time of pandemic By Sonia Clark Landsborough fibre and textile artist Judi Tomkins, along with her collaborators Jo Franco and Kira Mead, are promoting the Global Textile Hub, a collective which uses technology to collaborate with artists and others around the world who have an interest in the full spectrum of arts and crafts.

She studied photography at university, back in the days of film only, which shows her age more than she’d like to admit. More recently she has fully embraced the digital photography world and all it has to offer an artist. Photographing flowers

By Melanie Augustin Like most photographers, I enjoy shooting a wide range of subjects, but for my first piece for GC&M News, I thought I’d combine two of my obsessions: photography and flowers. During self-isolation, having a variety of blooms to shoot has really helped me enjoy staying at home. I find taking

photos, especially of flowers, a mindful activity as I explore the different angles and observe each blossom. Light Whenever I’m teaching people how to improve their photos, I always harp on about the light. There’s good reason for that. The word “photography” comes from ancient Greek meaning to write/draw with light. It’s the light that can make or break an image. If the sunlight is too strong it can create harsh shadows which can distract

from the beauty that you are trying to capture. If possible, the best time of day to photograph is early morning, late afternoon or on a cloudy day to get softer shadows. Rules are there to be broken, of course, and there are times that you may want the bright ray of light to illuminate a delicate poppy or tulip. If photographing cut flowers inside, it’s best to find a nice bright spot near a window that isn’t in direct light. Find the dance

The best piece of advice I’ve heard when photographing flowers is to “find the dance” of that particular flower. What is it about that particular flower that attracts you to it? Is it the colour, the way it sways in the wind, the sunlight that glows through its delicate petals, the repetition or curl of the petals, the details in the centre? Is it a single flower, a field filled with them or a beautifully arranged vase? Once you “find that dance”, determine the best way to express that. Angle The most interesting photos aren’t always taken from straight on. Now that you’ve

found what captivates you about the flower/s, do you need to change your position to express that? If it’s a detail, you might want to get in as close as your camera will allow you. If it’s a field of colour, move your camera up and down to see which way you can best capture a mass together. If you have a zoom function on your camera, adjust it to make the flowers look like they are closer together, take a step back and zoom in, it will compress what is in front of you. Does the flower look more interesting if you get down low? Or up above it? Check your background One last thing to do before you click, is to double check what is in the background of what you’re taking. Is there something unattractive or distracting? Can that be extracted by changing your position? Now it’s up to you Go out into your backyard, or take a camera (even your phone camera) with you out on a walk. Hinterland Families Virtual Mooloolah Valley Playgroup

Contributed by Natasha Odgers Mooloolah Valley Playgroup has not been deterred by COVID-19 to keep connecting and creating, with kids and parents connecting through video calls. Kids make and show craft, parents chat and there have still been books read and songs sung with the kids engaged. Playgroup is usually for children aged up to five years old, however siblings are welcome to be part of virtual playgroup. Playgroup coordinator Natasha Odgers said “It is more important than ever for parents and kids to keep connecting during this time. People can join from their phones or webcams. Newcomers are welcome”. Virtual playgroup is held at 9.30am on Wednesday mornings. Schools adopt creative approaches

With most students not able to attend their school as a result of the current changes to our lives, schools in our region have had to be creative with how they keep students united for events such as ANZAC Day. At Glass House Mountains State School last week, the dedicated school captains Malakai, Madelyn, Caitlin and Jaoxi, along with teacher Tracey Blake, prepared a power point presentation for all of the students to participate in - whether they were at school with their teacher or at home with their parents. Mooloolah Rocks

Back in 2017 a Facebook group called QLD ROCKS was set up to encourage a little bit of creativity and nature play for kids and parents that live in Queensland; it now has almost 30,000 members. Recently Lily Magill (11) and her brother Lachlan Magill (8) got their mum to start up the Facebook group called Mooloolah Rocks because they enjoy rock decorating and dropping for them and their friends to have some fun whilst out doing their exercise. They suggest putting the #moorocks on the back of the rock and placing them around parks or public areas in Mooloolah. Facebook group participants are encouraged to post photos of their rocks and the general location of where they are hidden eg: King Road near the school. If you find any rocks, you can also post on the page and include a location if you plan on rehiding them. The idea is that you can go hunting for painted rocks in your local park or track, or paint some and hide them for others to find, to help spread some joy in the community. Please note that the organisers advise that cemeteries, State and National Parks, and war memorials are considered no drop zones. Many readers would already know Mike from his roles as school Chaplain at Beerwah High & Primary Schools and in the Superdads band. Mike, his wife Donna and their three teenage sonshave lived in Glasshouse Country for over 13 years. I hope the Easter School holidays were a positive experience for you and your family. Perhaps things looked very different to what you would normally be doing this time of year. I know many families traditionally go camping or head to the beach over the Easter weekend. There have been so many cases lately of backyards being gardened a hundred times, poor dogs that are walked multiple times a day, and dusty pushbikes that have been dragged out of the shed to be used for family bike rides. As much as there have been some good things to come out of coronavirus, there have certainly been challenges. Loss of employment or income change being a big issue that many people have had to deal with. Something I have noticed recently is that, because our usual routine and patterns of behaviour have been altered, there is a discomfort and anxiety that comes with that. Quite a few people have said to me that if they stop being busy they start to feel down because they have chance to think. Can you relate to that? You may have found with the increased time spent with your family members that your relationships have become stronger and deeper, or, you may have found that instead frustration and unpleasant emotions come up at home. It is interesting how a person we love can somehow ‘push our buttons’ and we react with anger or start to feel hopeless. Something that I think we all need to do at the moment is run a personal ‘stocktake’. If you can, find a good mate to talk with about this stuff. Someone who you think will be up for a chin-wag and who will be trustworthy. 1. Who are the key people who contribute to my life? They may be family members, friends, or work mates. 2. What is my physical, emotional and mental health like? What rating would I give each of these out of ten? 3. If there were things in my life that I wish I could change, what would they be?

With the government’s COVID-19 restrictions previously allowing only their drive thru and cellar business to remain open, the restaurant reopening is exciting news for both hotel staff and locals, who can now order their favourite pub meals again. Jo Logan from Landsborough Hotel said that since having to close the doors at the end of March, so many people had been enquiring about what plans the business had to continue to offer meals. Now with a brand new takeaway menu ready to roll, Jo said they were excited to be able to reopen again for takeaway meals. “Due to popular demand we have decided to launch takeaway service, which we will run while the current COVID-19 restrictions are in place, said Jo.

“We are really looking forward to being able offer our customers again good pub food back in Landsborough.” The new takeaway menu will be offered seven days a week, with lunch available from 12pm-2pm, and dinner from 6pm7.30pm. Ordering is easy, just call and place your order and ensure payment over the phone. When picking up orders, entry is via the Landsborough Pub main entrance on Cribb Street with only one person permitted in the venue to collect the order. Customers will be asked to follow the directional arrows when entering the venue, and to ensure social distancing rules are adhered to at all times. The menu features a number of customer favourites including tasty starters, a good range of mains from chicken schnitzels and garlic prawns to curries, steak and lamb shanks, as well as a kids menu and meal deals. Current meal deals include any lunchtime burger or steak sandwich

Free meal giveaway for community members By Sonia Clark Recently, RangeCare launched a new community meal delivery service in partnership with local restaurants. The new menu features a delicious range of convenient frozen meals from The

Additionally, as part of their community care and inclusivity focus, RangeCare will donate one free meal to a local vulnerable community member. Jess Garey from Blackall Range Care Group said that with the current COVID-19 crisis affecting so many, this initiative was a wonderful way to provide a great community meal service while also supporting local businesses who may be struggling, as well as ensuring some of our more disadvantaged community members are not forgotten.

“We encourage the community to purchase menu items from our restaurant partners which supports their business, but also allows customers to enjoy restaurant quality meals at home. People can browse the menu and pick out their favourite ‘dining out experience’ which will then be delivered by our wonderful group of volunteers,” said Jess. All the meals are prepared and delivered frozen, with the only exception being ‘fish roulade’ from Le Relais Bressan, which comes refrigerated. Lucy needs a special owner

Here at GC&M News we love our pets and fur-babies, and we also love to support the incredible work of Sunshine Coast Animal Refuge (SCARS) by regularly providing them with space to share ‘Pets of the Week’. This week we have a rather gorgeous young girl, Lucy, who might be a touch trickier to home due to her special needs, so we thought we would include a story about her with more detail, to help our friends at SCARS find a suitable forever home for this lovely young lass.

Fifteen week old Lucy is a deaf Airedale Terrier X Cattle Dog, who requires an owner who has the time and patience to teach her sign language. She is friendly, affectionate, confident and outgoing, and has a wonderful nature, but is certainly still very much a young puppy who will get into mischief. Lucy will come with a free training class to help her settle in, and will require a loving, patient owner or family to teach her the ways of a well-behaved pooch. She will definitely require obedience training, further socialization, mental stimulation, exercise and lots of play time and snuggles. She will most likely chew, dig and destroy things; though training and exercise will help her from doing this. For her safety, Lucy will need to be on a lead at all times when out in public, and her new home will need secure fencing at least six-foot-high (brick, wood or Colourbond) with no gaps. This clever young girl is a quick and responsive pupil, and has already started to learn sign language, though her new owners will have to have the time to continue to teach her. Illegal dumping could cost you thousands

Dumping waste in our environment, rather than disposing of it in the correct way, is illegal and carries penalties of up to $133,450. Illegal dumping can include items such as bags of household rubbish and garden waste, and also includes larger scale dumping such as household goods, furniture and construction materials. Household waste should be disposed of via the weekly general waste bin collections. Sunshine Coast Council waste facilities are open and most recyclable items continue to be recycled as per normal, including white goods, scrap metal, e-waste, batteries, cardboard, paints and oils. Noticeboard Range Croquet Club

Contributed by Ken Barker The members of the Range Croquet Club are saddened by the death of long-time member and good friend, Neil Lovett, of Glass House Mountains. He will be remembered for his gentle nature and the respect that he had for all. We extend our sympathy to his wife Kate and family. Neil learned and loved the game in South Australia where he grew up. Until a few years ago, he was actively involved in almost all aspects of club life - the lawn (which he mowed regularly), publicity and participation; he brought integrity, accuracy, and friendship to meetings, and the social aspect of the game. He was a wonderful player for beginners to come up against – exhibiting a sense of fun and adventure which supposedly more serious players eschew – shooting at hoop one with ball one, the “Glasshouse” rule for bisques, and many other aspects of his game no longer seen much, or gone. He played croquet the way it should be played in Heaven – to be enjoyed for its beauty. He will be sorely missed.

One of the great things about our club is that they are a “down to earth” lot, as is demonstrated in the photo (taken well before the social distancing rules came into force).which shows Sarah Widin, Wallace Roy and Stuart Craig digging out an infestation of carpet grass. It has also been good to see the interaction and tips being passed around by fellow players about how to cope with the isolation. Murray Tinker from Caloundra has made a video of how to monitor your swing. It is particularly apt because, unlike other swing machines, which usually involve swinging your mallet within a frame, it uses a mirror with hoop width strips pasted on it - breaking down the impression of loneliness, even though the image you see is your own. Collectively, the structures making up the female part of the flower is called the ‘carpel’. A carpel is a collection of pistils (a flower may have multiple pistils) and a pistil consists of the ovary, the style and the stigma. The stigma can be found at the end of a filament-like style and it is a receptacle that is responsible to catch some pollen.

Some plants have a sticky sugary stigma while others, such as many windpollinated plants, have microscopic plumelike structures which trap pollen as it drifts along in the breeze. Corn silks are a good example of a stigma developed to catch wind borne pollen. The tiny stigma of a species of crocus is collected and used as a spice in cooking. It’s called saffron and is more expensive per weight than gold. A plant has a magical ability to recognise the right pollen (from its own species) and only let that pollen germinate and grow a pollen tube down the style. They do this due to the unique pattern of ridges and troughs on the surface of the pollen grain. If the right pattern is detected, metabolic processes are started which allows only the right pollen to germinate. The slender style terminates in the ovary, which is where the pollen tube is headed, bringing with it some sperm cells. When the pollen tube grows into the ovary, the sperm cells enter the embryo sac to fertilise the seeds. This is when the magic happens and the ovule rapidly develops into the seed. Sometimes the ovary structure itself will swell up to form a type of fruit.

Happy International Compost Awareness Week! It’s time to celebrate all things compost and the magic of decaying organic matter, mixed with old manure and bounding with microbes, fungi and other detritivores. Yes, that is a word … it means any organism that obtains its nutrients by consuming detritus (decomposing plant and animal parts as well as faeces). Well, who says gardeners don’t know how to have a good time … detritus, faeces, rotting compost … it’s all music to our ears. International Compost Awareness Week runs from May 3-9 and is an initiative of the Centre for Organic Research and Education (CORE), a not-forprofit organisation conducting yearround organic research, education and awareness activities (they also organise National Organic Week, which is September 7-13). Compost Awareness Week is a time during which Australians are encouraged learn more of the importance and benefits of composting in their own backyards. Costa “The Composter” Georgiadis (pictured), host of Gardening Australia, has an all-consuming passion for composting and is the official Compost Awareness Week Ambassador. This year, Costa and the organisers are wanting people to understand how composting fits into a ‘circular economy’. A circular economy is where the inherent

systems and processes are aimed at eliminating waste and the continual use of resources. A circular economy aims to keep products, equipment and infrastructure in use for longer, an in the process improving the productivity of these resources. Composting is nature’s circular economy, where organic waste is reduced and reused, its nutrients are recycled into fertiliser. By returning these nutrients back to the soil, rather than letting organic waste rot away in landfills, we can encourage and promote a healthier, more biodiverse soil ecosystem. And that’s very good for our gardens. Rather than your household organic waste going into landfill, where it converts to methane and added to the atmosphere's greenhouse gases, there are easy options for everyone. You can create a compost bin or make your own compost heap; you can feed them to your worm farm; or if you live in a unit, the Bokashi Bin Bucket system might be more suitable. If you are going to be working under your vehicle in public, it is always a good idea to make sure you are wearing underwear. A local newspaper in Brisbane recently shared the story about a couple who drove their car to a supermarket only to have it break down in the car park. The man told his wife to carry on with getting the groceries while he fixed the car. The wife returned later to see a small group of people near the car. On closer inspection she saw a pair of hairy legs protruding from under the vehicle. Unfortunately, although the man was in shorts, his lack of underpants turned his private parts into glaringly public ones. Unable to stand the embarrassment, she dutifully leaned down and quickly put her hand up his shorts and tucked everything back into place. On standing up she looked across the bonnet and found herself staring at her husband who was standing idly by watching. The RACQ mechanic, however, had to have three stiches in his forehead. Trading places

A Nobel Prize winning mathematician is traveling from university to university on a speaking tour by limousine. After several engagements the mathematician and his driver are having dinner and the driver says, "I've heard your speech so many times I think I could give it wordfor-word." The mathematician accepts the challenge and they switch places for the next

speech; the driver dresses like the professor and the professor dresses as the driver and sits in the back of the auditorium. The driver gives the speech flawlessly and opens up the floor for questions usually there are none. But one of the students at the university has a very large ego and decides to attempt to stump the Nobel Prize winner. After the student asks his question for ten straight minutes the driver laughs and says "That question is so simple I'll let my driver in the back answer it."

Got to love being in lock down

Day 1 – I can do this, got enough food and wine to last a month! Day 2 – Opening my 8th bottle of wine. I fear wine supplies might not last. Day 3 – Strawberries: some have 210 seeds and some have 235 seeds. Who knew? Day 4 – 8pm, I removed my day pyjamas and put on my night pyjamas. Day 5 – Today, I tried to make hand sanitizer. It came out as jelly shots! Day 6 – I get to take the rubbish out. I’m so excited, I can’t decide what to wear. Day 7 – Laughing way too much at my own jokes! Day 8 – Went to a new restaurant called ‘The Kitchen’. You have to gather all the ingredients and make your own meal. I have no clue how this place is still in business. Day 9 – I put bottles of alcohol in every room. Tonight, I’m getting all dressed up and going on a pub crawl. Day 10 – Struck up a conversation with a spider today, seems nice, he’s a web designer.
