What's On this week
Last week I received quite a few emails from the local schools about Book Week and I have to say it made me a little jealous. I know I am going to sound like an old person when I say, back in my day there wasn’t such a thing as Book Week. If there had been I would have loved the opportunity to get dressed up as my favourite book character. Actually, to be honest, it might not have been all that great as my mum wasn’t that creative when it came to dressing up and costume making. I probably would have been the kid whose costume was created around a cardboard box and old newspaper and a roll of alfoil each year. However, looking at the photos on pages 14 and 15, a lot of local kids must have some very talented mums, dads and, I suspect, nannas out there who have put in quite a lot of time and effort for this year’s event. It looks like the school staff took the task quite seriously as well. I reckon they might have enjoyed the opportunity to dress up and have some fun too. Maybe I will talk to team at GC&M News and see if I can get them on board for next year. Regards,

Local News Community vibes at Music Festival By Sonia Clark
The Maleny Music Festival returns to the Maleny Showgrounds for three days of community spirited music, workshops and activities from August 30-September 1. With nearly 120 performances featured on the three-day program, along with a dedicated children’s festival and some seriously stellar home grown and international talent, the festival is a cultural celebration of music, arts and creative expression. This year marks the festival’s eighth year and will feature an eclectic smorgasbord of music and performance. From Sorong Samarai Band, bringing together rising stars from Papua New Guinea and West Papua, Melbourne’s premier dance band Hello Tut Tut, Indigenous performers Joe Geia and Deline Briscoe, Nashville guitarist Van Larkins to Alon Shemesh, a didgeridoo performer from Israel, refugee performers from Bhutan and Iran, Zumpa, Barry Charles - the list of talent is impressive. The festival will feature four stages and the music covers many genres including dance, blues, folk, rock, Celtic, Latin, funk, Indigenous, Gypsy jazz, alt country, Afro beat, Italian, piano wizard, guitarists, barbershop and acapella choir. This family friendly event has gained a reputation across Australia as well as through international performers as being an engaging and inclusive festival of high standard. Melbourne’s premier dance band Hello Tut Tut the concerts, there will also be food and market stalls, a licensed bar and children’s workshops and entertainment, offering something for everyone. Festival goers can come for one day or evening or for the full three days. It all kicks off on the Friday afternoon with an Indigenous opening ceremony and culminates on Sunday with a bush dance and finale concert featuring many acts from over the weekend, and a chance for a final up tempo groove with local funkster Hayden Hack. Members of the new Beerwah Community Markets board came together for the first time last week to discuss plans to move ahead with the weekly Sunday morning markets to be held in Turner Park (next to the Beerwah Library). Board members Lyndon Wittingslow, Jo Male, Avril Kent, Melody Rautio, Kylie Cherry and Clem van der Weegan hope to have the markets up and running by the end of September. They are currently calling on vendors who are interested in becoming stallholders to get in touch. The artisan-style markets will feature a range of local produce, as well as home grown, hand crafted and new and old crafts, showcasing the range of
talent in our local area. Music, kids activities and regular bake offs and cooks offs are just some of the fun family activities they hope to have on offer, all while supporting a local children’s charity. “We’re lucky in that our local area has a huge range of produce and we really want to be able to bring that to the locals through offering a premium quality market,” said Lyndon Wittingslow, from The Fat Frenchman Patisserie & Café. Toto helps our little storytellers By Jennifer Kent Year 2 students at Glass House Mountains State School have been fortunate to receive weekly visits this year from their four-legged friend Toto and owner Gloria Cooke. They visit as part of the Story Dogs reading program, a non-profit literacy program running throughout Australia aiming to help improve literacy by making reading fun for children. Animals are ideal reading companions as they promote relaxation and lower blood pressure. There is often a special connection between animals and children, particularly for those who may find reading a little more challenging. The children’s response to having Gloria and Pomeranian cross Toto visit has been overwhelmingly positive, and year 2 teacher and Story Dogs coordinator at the school, Terri Wessels, says they have not only seen improvements in the children’s reading skills but also a big shift in their confidence. “The children love when Gloria and Toto come to visit and they get to spend one-on-one time with them, which is very special,” she said. Locally the Story Dogs program has two dog teams - Melanie and Lulu, and Jenny and Ruby - who visit the River School in Maleny, and at Montville State School Victoria and Madeline make regular visits. All receive incredibly positive responses. Dog teams rely on sponsorships to continue their
fantastic work in local schools. A tax deductible sponsorship of $500 provides a set of six quality children’s books, training materials, reading rug, dog team accreditation, volunteer uniform, volunteer training dog vest and volunteer public liability insurance. The Story Dogs program is currently looking for sponsors for these local teams. Lindy Chamberlain–Creighton to visit Maleny Lindy Chamberlain–Creighton, an entertaining and articulate speaker who has addressed government officials and ordinary citizens in countries around the world, will give a talk at the Maleny Uniting Church at 2pm on Sunday, October 6. The electrifying cry in 1980, “A dingo’s got my baby”, galvanised an entire nation and Lindy Chamberlain soon became a household name in Australia. The story also captured the imagination of millions around the world. For some she was an icon of the evil mother, while others saw incredible strength and courage in the face of extreme adversity. Few will ever experience what she has, and perhaps fewer would survive such trauma with humour and courage intact. With powerful credibility and a captivating style, Lindy reveals the truth behind the rumour and innuendo, and shares how her faith was the foundation and platform from which she drew courage and strength to pull through. Those who have had the opportunity to hear Lindy speak or who have read her book are often encouraged and filled with hope and inspiration. While attendance on the night was a little down on what the chamber hoped for, Ursula was pleased to be able to fill all of the executive roles on the night. Brett Piercy, one of the partners in Hinterland Accounting Service, has taken on the job of vice president, Lisa Grigor, from Meat at Landsborough, is the secretary and Michelle Christopher-Blockland, from Coast2Hinterland Finance, will be treasurer. Vianta Arts looking for new curator Have you ever dreamt of running an art gallery but didn’t know were to start or didn’t want to make the financial commitment? Michele Deveze, who has been running Vianta Arts in Beerwah for almost five years, has loved every minute of it. She has decided to step aside and give another art lover the opportunity to showcase the beautiful work of the region’s local artists. Vianta Espresso & Wine Bar in Simpson Street at Beerwah is home to Vianta Arts, providing a fantastic space for exhibitions and extensive opening hours. Michelle says the role of gallery curator is an exciting one and the fun and joy of helping artists present their very best work is very rewarding. “It is time for someone new, with fresh ideas to take over the space,” Michelle said. She said while it won’t make you rich, there was a small fee to make it worthwhile.
The position entails liaising with artists, following up enquiries and generating leads, ensuring a professional standard of work, as well as assisting artists with their exhibition to ensure it is cohesive and interesting. In conjunction with artists there is also preparation for the monthly opening nights, including drinks and nibbles, e-invitations and media liaison as well as introducing the artists showcasing their work on the night. Artists have a month-long exhibition and as the business is open seven days a week from 7am– 5pm as well as Friday and Saturday evenings for dinner, the artists’ work is showcased to all of Vianta Expresso & Wine Bar customers each day. Community News Oinking good family fun
Contributed by Kylie Merola Landsborough Hotel’s seventh annual charity pig races were held on Sunday, August 18 and, once again, attracted a large crowd keen to join in the fun and help raise money for local charities. Thanks to Terry Morrow from the Landsborough Hotel and his staff, as well as all of the event sponsors and those who came along and supported the event, more than $4000 was raised. Proceeds from the family fun day will go towards supporting four local charities - the Landsborough Rural Fire Brigade, Landsborough State School P&C, Beerwah Glass House United Football Club and the Lions Club of Beerwah. Under the watchful eye of race caller Kevin Kiley, from Noah’s Thoroughbred Racing Pigs, the little pig competitors had locals and visitors squealing with delight. Each of the racers, wearing brightly coloured sequined racing coats, navigated a circuit featuring trigger gates, ramps, hay bales and tyres. The pig that was the first to pop its snout into a bowl of milk at the end of the obstacle course was declared the winner. In between each race, there was plenty of time for the pigs to relax and take a little ‘piggy nap’ in the shade. There were fun activities to keep the youngsters happy including face painting and a petting zoo.
Glass House set to grow again
Coming on top of the 88-lot estate between Fullertons Road and Coonowrin Road comes another development application for 74 new housing lots on Railway Parade in Glass House Mountains. The ex-farming land at 89 Railway Parade is within the low density residential urban footprint zoning, so no public notification of the development is required. According to the planning documents, the lots will range in size from 700m2 up to 1631m2 with the average being 893m2. A dispensation is being sought by the developer as the minimum average lot size prescribed in the planning scheme is 900m2. Four lots are planned to be dual occupancy (or duplex houses) and 15 lots will provide for secondary dwellings (granny flats) to be built, which equates to a total of 93 possible residences within the 11 hectare estate. Three parks are to be created, with the largest being two hectares on the south-eastern corner of the estate, providing natural forest and open space recreation areas. The road layout only allows for one entrance point from Railway Parade, with no alternative exit provided. This could create issues in times of an emergency or if an accident blocks the single exit. Awards for Maleny Players actors Contributed by Diane Hobson Talented and enthusiastic actors from theatre companies across the Sunshine Coast, Redcliffe, Beenleigh and Forest Lake came together recently for the Sunshine Coast Live Theatre Festival 2019 held at the Buderim Memorial Hall. Festival adjudicator Michael Beh gave encouraging feedback to all actors, which included the junior and youth sections, together with directors and playwrights. The Maleny Players entered two plays in the festival, both written by members - ‘The Artist’ by Andrew Wallace and ‘The Volunteer’ by Rob Hobson. Both plays were well received with Ben McKecknie taking out Best Supporting Actor (Comedy) for his part in ‘The Artist’ and David Townsend an Adjudicators Award for his performance in ‘The Volunteer’.

Do you know a music star in year 11 or 12 with a love of jazz? For the first time, the Sunshine Coast Jazz Club is excited to offer a music bursary to senior high school students to encourage their continued study of music. The bursary will be valued at $3000 and will be shared between two categories. Section A is open to song writers to present original compositions and section B is open to vocalists, instrumentalists and/or trios presenting cover songs. Students are welcome to enter both sections.
Entrants can apply by submitting an application form, along with a video of a performance of two songs via a YouTube link. Parental/guardian authorisation must be obtained and signature provided. Entries close on September 30 with final judging to be held at the Pelicans Room, Caloundra Power Boat Club on November 23, where finalists will have backing support from a professional jazz band. The Sunshine Coast Jazz Club is excited to see the talent of young Sunshine Coast musicians and encourages all year 11 and 12 students within the Sunshine Coast region to apply. Mandolins for St Georges in the Hills The third concert in the popular concert series hosted by St George’s Church Maleny will follow a sell out concert of Brisbane’s Classic Clarinets last month, so booking is recommended as space is limited. Allegedly Queensland’s foremost mandolin and guitar ensemble, Mandolins in Brisbane (MIB) will perform a varied program in the church, at 2 Walkers Drive, on Sunday, September 8 at 2pm. Priest in charge at St Georges, Jeanette Jamieson, said she had enjoyed MIB since their inception. “I am also impressed that they recognise contemporary Queensland composers and artists as well as produce beautiful renditions of the classics
such as Vivaldi,” she said. Founded in Brisbane in 1998, MIB continues the traditions of mandolin music established in Italy as well as performing classical, bluegrass and popular music from across the globe. MIB’s current conductor is classical guitarist and musical director Joel Woods. Joel is a specialist in plucked strings and has played guitar with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra as well as lead guitar for the Melbourne Mandolin Orchestra on its recent tour of Europe. He performs with several groups in South East Queensland, where he plays a wide variety of plucked stringed instruments such as mandolin, banjo and ukulele. “This will be a unique concert for Maleny and one I recommend as I believe it will add to our growing reputation at St George’s as a music centre for small and sometimes unusual groups and soloists,” Rev Jamieson said. “We also have afternoon tea available in the hall where our audience can meet the players after the concert.”

For the past 14 years the Caloundra Power Boat Club (CPBC) Fishing Club has organised an annual TakeA-Kid-Fishing Day for junior anglers to learn about responsible and sustainable recreational fishing. State Member for Caloundra Mark McArdle has provided $1000 in sponsorship for the event, which he said was run by the dedicated volunteers of the CPBC Fishing Club and promoted a number of important values while giving families a fun day out on the water. “The event is about a lot more than just fishing. The club’s aim is to foster family togetherness, exercise outdoors and connection with your local community while also teaching young and old the importance of respecting the environment,” Mr McArdle said. This year’s event will take place on Sunday, September 29 at Caloundra Power Boat Club, is free for participants and includes a sausage sizzle and sample bags for the kids. Terry Graham, of the CPBC Fishing Club, said the event had grown significantly since its inception in 2006 when just 35 children took part. This year he is expecting more than 200 to participate. While the day is about taking the children out to enjoy themselves, it is also about education around the environment and fishing safety. “Fishing and the environment very much go hand-inhand. Our club promotes that whatever you do on the water you must minimise the impact,” Terry said. “We find it better to start with juniors because they really take on board what they learn and they take that information home. “Parents often say, ‘My son or daughter told me I was doing the wrong thing because the Fishing Cub taught them that is the wrong thing’,” Terry said. Don’t forget to mark September 29 in your calendar to take your children or grandchildren fishing. Registration is between 7–9am. Weigh-in closes at 11am followed by presentations of the major prizes for the longest whiting, bream and flathead. All children must be accompanied by an adult and will need to bring their own sunscreen, bait and fishing gear. Fishing is permitted from a boat, the beach or shoreline.

Seniors community lunch
As part of National Seniors Week, members of the Landsborough Seventh-day Adventist Church hosted a free lunch for about 70 senior members of the community. The Landsborough School of Arts Memorial Hall committee kindly allowed the free use of the hall to hold the event. Clients from Glasshouse Country Care as well as other people from the local area enjoyed entertainment by the Palm Lake Beachmere Songsters before a presentation by Guide Dogs Queensland, with $630 raised for the organisation. This was followed by a three-course vegetarian buffet lunch. “It was good to connect with the senior members of the community as well as support an important community service,” Charles Russell, the event coordinator, said.

This wonderful voluntary organisation helps so many people in outback Australia in times of sickness, providing much needed transport to attend appointments and spend time with loved ones. Our next outing will be on September 4 when we will meet at the park on the Mooloolah Valley side of Ewan Maddock Dam at 10am for morning tea followed by a walk to Dularcha National Park historic railway tunnel for those who want to participate. Contributed by Bob Banner At the Beerwah Lions Club’s August dinner meeting Lorraine Wise presented the report from the ladies auxiliary, saying there had been 405 pairs of second-hand spectacles collected locally. Lorraine told the meeting that the Lions Clubs International Worldwide Eyeglass Recycling Program headquarters at Clontarf had received 339,000 pairs for the year. These numbers are impressive but, more importantly, will result in over 300,000 people living in underprivileged countries having much clearer vision. Anyone wishing to donate their old glasses can leave them at Spec Savers Beerwah, the Landsborough Pharmacy and the Glass House Mountains Newsagency.

Following on from the recent success of the welcome dinner they are working to create this as an annual event. Year 4 students from Eudlo State School participated in the Lions fire poster contest, which will now become an annual project. The club is also keen to introduce other youth projects such as youth of the year and the Lions Clubs International Peace Poster contest. Funds raised by the group are given back to the community helping individuals and community organisations in need of assistance. If you are interested in doing more for your community and enjoying fellowship and meeting people, you are invited to come along to meet the members and learn about the world's largest and most active service club organisation. Re: The last word on wallabies
It’s a pity that Sammy Ringer, whose letter was in GC&M News, August 21 edition, didn’t contact me before she wrote about kangaroos and Crystal Waters (CW) as the changes and additions to further protect wildlife here had already been set in place. All of these measures began within a few days of the death of the wallaby and baby. The CW Coop ordered one large sign in yellow and black to go at our entrance with the instruction to SLOW DOWN, and the mention of children, kangaroos and wallabies. Quarry expansion?
Having recently relocated to the Glass House Mountains area we now have grave concerns for the area in relation to a possible expansion of Hanson’s Quarry. We have been told that the owners of the quarry in Old Gympie Road have plans to make an application to significantly expand their operations. If this is the case and they plan to increase the tonnage that they are able to extract, this would result in a marked increase in the number of quarry trucks travelling through the township and surrounding areas, which would surely have an impact on noise and air pollution and possibly the water table. We are already seeing numerous residential developments on both sides of Coonowrin Road and also a proposed development on Railway Parade, which will see an increase in traffic, so this combined with the potential increase of traffic on the road from the quarry will be a nightmare. If it is the quarry’s intention is to expand then the effect can only be detrimental to this national heritage listed area and would make a mockery of the Sunshine Coast Council’s nomination to become a UNESCO biosphere. We hope that Hanson's public relations activities such as a recent open day wasn’t just an exercise in trying to get the public on side. If as a resident you are concerned about this matter you should contact your local councillor and state and federal parliamentarians and voice your concerns.

Heritage on your doorstep On the outskirts of the Glass House township is Bankfoot House, the oldest surviving residence in the Glass House Mountains. Built in 1868, it was once a lunch stop and staging post for Cobb & Co coaches on the Brisbane to Gympie gold fields route. This outstanding heritage-listed property is open to visitors and locals to explore and be involved. With more than 6,000 collection items, five buildings and 17 display spaces, the Bankfoot House heritage precinct offers a full heritage discovery experience, not only for visitors, but for volunteers too. Since the restored shed and new exhibitions were opened in October 2018 during the property’s 150th anniversary, the precinct has greeted more than 3,000 visitors. Visitor numbers are expected to grow dramatically in the coming months as the precinct hosts some amazing major events.
As part of the Horizon Festival, Bankfoot House will host A Galaxy of Suns on Saturday, August 31 from 4-7pm. The performance involves a spectacular 36-part choir who ‘sing’ the stars as they rise and set. Further events include the Adaptive Reuse Heritage Tour, as part of the Sunshine Coast Open House program; the Built Heritage Symposium, with a line-up of renowned speakers; changing exhibitions; and a celebration of Christmas inside the heritage house.

The recent engagement of an education consultant has also seen the development of a professional education program that delivers free school programs to all primary students in the region. The education kits meet National Curriculum links and each kit tells the story of the people of Bankfoot House. Bankfoot House heritage precinct is located on the way to the Glass House Lookout at 1998 Old Gympie Road, Glass House Mountains. Entry is free and the precinct is open from 10am–3pm every Friday, Saturday and Sunday (closed public holidays). Group tours by appointment. With perfect weather and enthusiastic community support, the 48th Beerwah Charity Sports and Spring Carnival lived up to its name. It was great to see such a good crowd, lots of action in all sections of the program and all age groups enjoying the entertainment. The success of this annual fundraiser for Cancer Council Queensland is the result of a huge community effort - support from local businesses as sponsors, other local organisations that help run stalls and activities, and time donated by so many generous volunteers. From Lebanon comes this heartwrenching story about Zain, a 12-year-old street kid who sues his parents for the "crime" of bringing him into the world. Zain leaves his neglectful parents to survive on his wits among the many impoverished and dispossessed living on the streets of Beirut. Continually exposed to unimaginable dangers and exploitation, he feels life without love is simply not worth living. Interestingly, director Nadine Labaki assembled a cast of non-professionals to play the roles: people whose lives closely parallel the lives of the characters they portray. By placing these people in scenes and asking them to react spontaneously using their own words, Labaki has created a film of great authenticity and emotional intensity, which won her the Grand Jury Prize at Cannes among many other awards. In the Garden Jobs for the yard in September
• Soil temperatures need to be around 20°C to germinate seeds of warm season vegetables. To check, see if pumpkin seeds are germinating by themselves from old compost. If so, then the soil is warm enough. • Grow any herbs now – except for basil (it’s too early) and coriander (it’s too late). • Take poinsettia cuttings to strike and give away as Christmas presents. • Custard apples should lose their leaves this month, so it’s time to prune them. • Pruning of edible fig trees can be carried out. Be vigorous – one-third can be cut off. Figs are only produced on new wood of the new season’s growth. Give them a good feed of general fertiliser. • Mulch your gardens to keep in the soil moisture. • Passionfruit vines will start to throw out vigorous new shoots. Fertilise them well and mulch to retain soil moisture. • Dig up and divide canna lilies. Water them in well with a seaweed solution. • Throw some gypsum over your lawn to open up the soil, allowing the water to penetrate deeper. • Spray your flowering mangoes with Mancozeb or a copper-based fungicide to prevent the disease anthracnose. • Watch out for weeds – they will germinate and grow quicker now it is starting to warm up again. From the churches The other day I began some renovations in my home. Bags and bags of stuff we no longer needed or used were packed off to the Salvation Army. It was good that these things were going to be made available to others in the community who use them for little or no cost. It caused me to think about a verse I read recently. “When you reap the harvest of your land, do not reap to the very edges of your field or gather the gleanings of your harvest. Leave them for the poor and for the foreigner residing among you. I am the LORD your God.� Leviticus 23:22 NIV11 As most of us have no such fields to work in this way, I pondered how this principle might be carried out with further Christian reflection in our world today. What are the “edges of fields� and “leftovers of our harvests� in your life and society? What do we set aside for the poor and needy among us?

A typical follow on for us is to take our own excess of things and instead of putting them on eBay to sell (and thus make every amount of coin for yourself), consider setting them aside for the poor at your favourite op shop. Have some unused land that you just have to keep mowing? Think about putting a mini house on it for a low-income person to rent or buy. Do you have excess from your fruit trees and gardens? Take it down to the neighbourhood centre and donate it, or better yet, cook and can it for their future use. This is one way you can physically practise your Christianity before God. The subtext in scripture is that the Earth is the Lord’s and all that is in it, so you don’t really own anything anyway. God is more interested in how you treat the poor with his stuff.

Glasshouse Country Bowls Club Contributed by David Hayes Thursday, August 22: Winners were the triples team of Darcy Wilson, Vic Muscat and Tony Verdonck with 65 points and runners up were Lindsay Henderson and Darryl Kull on 61 points. Lucky draw went to Sally and Brian Squires. Next week being the fifth Thursday of the month we will be playing three bowl pairs. Saturday, August 24: Men’s pennant division 5, home to Kallangur. At one stage all rinks were down but fought back hard to win all three. Last game is against Dayboro this week at home. Division 10 was away to Narrangba and the result came down to the last end with Rodney Dick’s team losing by five and Warren Blackbourne winning by seven picking up two shots on the last end to win by two overall. Last game is next week away against Sandgate. A win and they will make the semi-finals. Division 11, home to Caboolture Lakes, was an important game with a win needed. Jimmy Tatum had a 23-all draw but John Annakin, in a great game, went down by three. Next week is away to Bribie. With pennant season coming to the end we now get into club certified events. The mixed singles are now open and close on Thursday week. Hope we get plenty of men and women participating. Please fill in a form at the club. On Saturday, September 7 at 12noon our club will be hosting the men’s pennant finals for divisions 3, 6 and 9 in what will be a great afternoon of bowls. Please come down and watch if you have nothing on. The Glasshouse Ladies Springtime Fours will be on Monday, September 16. Cost is $20 per player. There will be a 9am morning tea for a 9.30am start of play. The format is mixed fours, 21 ends with a woman to skip and men to play lead or second. A sheet is at the club to put your name down or please contact Noelle Dean for more info. It should be a fantastic day. It’s coming up to our AGM, which will be held in the dining room of Club Glass House 9.30am Saturday, September 14. Nominations are open for the committee. The Range Croquet Club Contributed by Ken Barker Three games of golf croquet and one game of association croquet were played on Thursday afternoon. In the golf croquet matches Gillian Bradley and Sally Adams teamed up to beat Bev Sockhill and Helen Andrews in two of the games 7–1 in the first and 7-6 in the third but Helen and Bev showed their fighting spirit by winning 7–3 in the second. Kath Smith and Vince Carbery played a game of association that rattled a few hoops to end up with a 12–6 result favouring Kath. Eight enthusiastic golf croquet players from Caloundra played on the lawns on Friday. On Saturday, Sarah Widin, Priscilla Vickers and Robert Elliott played Headland Buderim in the Bray Shield winning two games to one. Sarah soundly defeated Garry Shaw 26–3. Robert played a cliff hanger against Lesley Johstone with the game going to golden hoop and finally winning 9–8. In the doubles Priscilla scored a magical hoop but to no avail as she and Sarah went down to Carolyn Aldrich and Dianne Horsman 8–12. Well done Maleny. Ken Barker and Helen Andrews managed to score 11 hoops to Vince’s 8 on Sunday, while two contenders for the division 4 club championship locked horns in a practise match. Wallace Roy played well to beat Stuart Craig 10–5. Vince, Kath and Ken played in the Golden Oldies hosted by Headland Buderim on Monday. It was a wonderful day and a lot of fun, with great hosts and many people attending. Joan Hogarth from Graceville club, who has played in every event since its inauguration in the 1990s, was a deserving winner. Robbie and Kaye Robertson from Point Lookout won blocks A and B respectively, Jocelyn Lerch won block C and Jan Robertson won block D. Congratulations to Carolyn Aldrich and the rest of the Headland Buderim team for organising a very enjoyable event. Coaching for beginners and others is available on the picturesque lawns at the bottom of the Maleny Showgrounds from 8-10am on Saturdays. These are popular sessions in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. Wednesday night saw some close finishes in the games. It was great to have some visiting caravaners from the showgrounds join us this week. All are welcome to come and join in at 6pm for 6.30pm burger and bowls. Friday scroungers saw Jim King, Kathy King, Dennis Kyling and Dave Edwards successful on each rink. Hopefully all members have pencilled in the Scotty Fawkes Memorial Day on Sunday, October 6. See details and get your teams of triples together. Glasshouse Districts along with the Maleny and Landsborough cricket clubs are hoping to field a team in this exciting new format. Anastasia Maher (pictured) has been playing at Glasshouse (last season in U13s) and she is keen to encourage other girls who are interested in joining her in teams for junior girls, U10 girls or women. Sport Easy Find Classifieds She’s not just a pool champ! Last week we shared Seanna Thompson’s national swimming achievements at the Australian School Sports Swimming Championships. It seems she’s not only great in the pool but on the track too. Seanna competed alongside many other school children from around the state last week, representing the Sunshine Coast at the Queensland School Sport track and field championships. Seanna brought home gold in long jump, silver in the 800m and bronze in the 200m, as well as gold in the relay. She will go on to compete at the School Sport Australia championships to be held next month in Darwin. Last year, Seanna broke the record for long jump in her class division, so we are looking forward to seeing how she goes in September.
Witta Tennis Contributed by Pauline Fraley Very dusty and windy, making it an interesting day of tennis. Maleny Magics were the winners on the day, but Witta Wagtails put in a good performance. Thanks to Gerry Gabriel, Jan Maguire, Sonia Douglas and a special thanks to Pauline Fraley for filling in. Whistlers played at Caloundra against the Racquettes. It was windy and we all struggled with extra running to catch up with the ball. We brought a big win home but the wind was the winner on the day. Score was 45-15 games, 7-1 sets. Team was Aki Lepper, Brenda Warner, Donna Kuskopf and welcome Annie Quarmby for joining us. The Wildcats were at home to Yandina. It was a tough match with the wind playing a major factor. Pauline Fraley, Annie Stewart, Stacey English and Jenie Riding pulled it off in the end with a good win. It was another close match with the final score four sets each, 33-31 games.
