Hi Everyone Last week I shared the news of Stan Tutt passing and during the week Mr Tutt’s family visited GCNews sharing the sadness of his passing and highlights of their Dad, Grandad, brother and father-in-law who was known far and wide. Stan was definintely a Glasshouse Country local having lived in the family’s Landsborough home from 1937 (the property was purchased in 1936 and the house built by 1937). The Eulogy, delivered at Stan’s private funeral by son Gifford Tutt, provides an intimate portrait of the man. This Eulogy is published exclusively in GCNews as is the photo from the family’s private collection, featuring Stan on our front cover. We have also included a number of tributes from other locals. Thanks to the many contributors who have

Streetscape designs sharpened

Improved parking is one of the features of a revised design for the Glasshouse Streetscape Project.

Division 1 Councillor Anna Grosskreutz said a number of changes had been made to the project design to cater for community concerns. “After the original design was announced, a number of local business owners on Bruce Parade voiced concerns regarding some of the design elements. Council representatives also attended a recent Glasshouse public meeting to listen to locals’ concerns,” she said. “We have listened to the issues raised by both business owners and residents and have made amendments to the streetscape project that will provide a better outcome for the town.” Changes to the project design include: Shifting the eastern kerb on Bruce Parade 1.2 metres east to widen the parking area and allow greater access for larger vehicles; shortening the crossing kerb build out at the designated pedestrian crossing point on the eastern side of the parking area by 600mm; landscaping area to be full frontage of chemist and replace the same number of bollards that were previously in front of the chemist; delete garden bed on northern side of the driveway entrance into the IGA shopping complex and replace with an additional parking space; change line marking on western side of Bruce Parade north or Turner Street so additional parallel parking will be provided for heavy

vehicles, caravans or to accommodate up to three standard vehicles. Joan Tucker from Glass House Mountains Post Office said on Monday, July 18 following the protest meeting she was advised verbally by Council of several alterations to the streetscape plan and that an amended plan was being drawn. "I requested that a copy of this new plan be made available for public scrutiny and was told a copy would be out on Wednesday or Thursday. However by 5.00pm on Friday they had still not been supplied with a have plan" Joan said. "The width of the footpath on the eastern side has now been reduced to allow increased depth in the car parks, however without a plan the public cannot follow up on the resolution of the other issues. "The engineers in the planning department are paid by us the ratepayers to spend our money in our town but at no stage have we sighted a final working plan of the project. "When the final plan becomes available we will endeavour to contact everyone who expressed an interest in viewing same. Construction of the project is underway and is expected to be completed in around six to eight weeks (weather permitting).

Stan Tutt remembered

Eulogy - prepared and given by his son Dr Gifford Tutt Stan Tutt was a man of nature, and a great observer. He had an awareness of the sanctity of all things and a respect that determined the ways he thought and acted. His activism for example, in the wildlife preservation and conservation movements was based on his immense respect for the natural world. He appeared to sense nature without effort and was tireless in his activities to preserve it. I recall an incident when I was a boy in the early 1960s which may have been a turning point in Dad becoming an avid conservationist. At the time we had a large number of chooks on the farm at Landsborough, which were being threatened and attacked by a large wedge-tailed eagle. The normal thing for a farmer to do in those days was to shoot the eagle… which Dad did. (He was also a skilled marksman). I remember him having such a powerful sense of remorse and expressing such admiration for the beauty of the eagle, I am sure he changed his thinking from that moment on. Stan's respect for other people and his sensitivity to the needs particularly of displaced people, were, I think, motivators for his life-long socialist democratic political beliefs and activities. He believed strongly in equality of opportunity and fairness. Dad displayed particular kindness towards immigrants and foreign visitors. In the 1950s when working at the Beerburrum forestry, he keenly took a group of Ethiopian forestry students under his wing for training. To local Italian immigrants in the Landsborough community he regularly extended a cheery greeting in the street, and offered a helping

hand with their paperwork difficulties or legal matters. Stan was also a direct link to the pioneer past of the Sunshine Coast. For him, this was a passion. It began with his personal experience of being raised in the basic rural life of the hills of Eumundi and Kenilworth, then with his family moving with cattle driven on foot down the range to Landsborough to start a new life in 1939. Later, through his extensive research, writings and publications on the history of the area, he developed a deep understanding of the Sunshine Coast from its very beginnings. Dad’s lifespan has allowed him to observe the arrival on the Sunshine Coast of the very first electric lights, the first motorcars and aeroplanes, but also to witness the advent of television, internet communications, space travel and phones. Born in 1914, he was able to recall farewelling his Uncle Charles Tutt leaving forever for World War 1 battlefields. Then he lived through the Great Depression and survived World War 2 remarkably with his two brothers Charlie and Nigel, who are with us today. All his life, a writer; he observed and recorded. He was essentially a self-taught man: he liked the term ‘autodidact’. His formal schooling was limited to only a few years between the ages of nine and 13, but he owed a great deal to his dear mother who was a trained teacher. During WW2 he relentlessly recorded his daily experiences and observations in small pocket diaries which he secretly posted home one at a time. He was aware if these had been detected by military authorities he may have risked court martial! He took correspondence courses in creative writing,

and with his first available income purchased his first typewriter (by mail order). On it, he pounded out millions of words, won short-story competitions and influenced no doubt many minds. Dad's wartime experience, having had two rounds of duty in New Guinea, and flying in DC3 ‘Biscuit Bombers’ supplying ground troops, had given him a sharp eye for what made sense and what didn't. He had great respect for the power of clear thought. He had no time for highly educated experts or those in positions of power who had no commonsense or real-life experience… and he could be very direct about expressing this opinion. In some ways, Stan could be considered a visionary. He had the ability to foresee many of the environmental consequences of man's activities long before they became apparent to others. He tirelessly, but with humility, tried to make his community aware. When reading his autobiography entitled ‘In Company of Ghosts’, it is also clear that he had gained a spiritual awareness of the interconnected nature of the world. I quote a line from his book: ‘Looking back, in the company of many ghosts, I am amazed, and strengthened in my conviction that the physical world is not the only world’. A good innings indeed! Out for 97. Those of you with an interest in cricket, as the Tutt boys, Stan, Nigel and Charlie did in the 1920s and 30s, will understand what I mean when I say that young Stan was known for his ‘stone-walling’. He may not have gone for big scores then, but stayed on determinedly holding his position at the crease for many, many overs. He certainly continued with this approach in life, but managed to accumulate a score of 97 as well! A good innings indeed. And now he has graciously handed the bat on to younger generations to follow-on with the game.

As GCNews has been inundated with letters acknowledgement for Stan Tutt we’ll provide a ‘snapshot’ from each contribution. Stan Tutt was a great storyteller.…for many years he talked to the Landsborough students for the Anzac and Remembrance Day parades. He once gave me some good advice about writing. He said

don't try and tackle a big subject like your life story. Just write lots of little stories that you can compile to become your life story. That was his method of writing, and I think that’s why his Heritage Tales and books on pioneers and history were so enjoyable, they were easy to read. Goodbye to a character, a local legend. Gwyneth Evans, Landsborough Stan Tutt made a great contribution to community history in the Sunshine Coast region… he also encouraged others to take an interest in their heritage. He led the way in identifying and preserving important historical records, which may otherwise have been lost. The present generation of local and family historians owes him a debt of gratitude, as many of the resources we now work with would not have been so readily available without Stan’s efforts over many years. Bruce and Helen Page, Peachester History Committee Stan's knowledge of bushmen and their skills and the history of this area was exceptional … One of the things that fascinated me was that he learnt his writing skills under the guidance of Australian author Alan Marshall who wrote 'I can jump puddles.' Stan was a champion of the battler and those who might be doing it tough … The Heritage Library at Kawana Library is named after Stan Tutt. His writings are still here, though Stan has now gone to a better place. Di Warner, Kawana Heritage Library I first ‘met’ Stan Tutt in the late 1950’s when I was a P.M.G. Telephonist working in the old manual exchange, then housed in the Railway Station building at Landsborough. Stan was an outstandingly pleasant and courteous subscriber …. I became an active member of the Wildlife Preservation Society of Queensland, Caloundra Branch. Stan was Branch Secretary for a time and earned the affectionate nickname ‘Shufflewing’, thanks to his frequent shuffling about of piles of correspondence…. We were fellow members of the Shire of Landsborough Historical Society, now holding a large collection of his newspaper articles in the Reading Room that bears his name… Stan leaves a rich legacy… it was my privilege to have called him ‘Friend’. Skippy Park springs to life this Saturday A unique nature-based facility where locals can play, exercise and interact with native flora and fauna is fast taking shape at Landsborough. Stage 1 works for the Skippy Park nature based playground are now complete and council is inviting locals to sample the precinct’s amazing attractions at an open day on Saturday, July 30 from 11.00am. The event will showcase the recently completed works that include picnic shelters, barbeques, landscaping and a unique nature based playground for children that includes climbing trees and stepping stones. $172,000 towards the $240,000 stage 1 works. “Council has allocated another $430,000 in capital works funding over the next three years to further develop Skippy Park,” she said. “This precinct is the first of its kind on the Sunshine Coast and its features include sports fields, a criterium cycling track, picnic and barbeque areas, natural play spaces for children and of course its natural inhabitants – the kangaroos. “Future works at Skippy Park include exercise equipment, picnic shelters, entry signage, basketball and soccer half court.” Open day attendees will have the opportunity to have their say on the proposed future stages of the park. Local artist nominated for ‘Deadly Award’

In 2001, while attending an Indigenous Music Program in Sydney, Landsborough Artist De Greer-Yindimincarlie, was given a ticket to attend the Deadly Awards, which recognises and showcases the outstanding achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders in music, sport, entertainment, the arts and community achievements across Australia. While she was watching the winners receive their awards she said to herself, “I will be on that stage one day.” De’s dream has come true; she has recently been named as a finalist for a 2011 Deadly Awards in the category of Visual Artist of the Year. “It has taken 10 years of working hard at my art to get this nomination and I am so thrilled. It feels pretty surreal,” De said. The Deadly Awards will be held at the Sydney Opera House on September, 27 and De will be in the company of other well known Deadly nominees such Deborah Mailman and Jessica Mauboy. “I’m looking forward to the atmosphere and if I don’t win the award, I will just cherish the experience of being nominated and going down there for the awards again,” she said. “All of Australia’s Indigenous heroes, icons and role models will be there, so that would be an amazing thing to be witness to, to walk in and feel their combined presence there.” As well as being an artist who is commissioned by people all over the world, and running her successful business, Yindi Artz, De also runs visual art workshops in schools, is involved with music programs, film documentaries, is part of

Official opening at Beerwah State School Special guests, parents, teachers, students and community members helped Beerwah State School celebrate the official opening of their new Resource Centre and Hall expansion on Tuesday, July 19 with not one but two events. In the morning Mr Robert Frizzo, a life member of the P and C, cut the ribbon and unveiled a plaque, while the evening event was an opportunity for the community and past students and teachers to view the new facilities. For both events, guests were treated to choir and instrumental performances provided by talented Beerwah students, both current and past. Guided tours of the new facilities revealed a state of the art Resource Centre which includes the library, conference room, multi-purpose room, individual work spaces, interactive whiteboards, IT areas and more. It even has a ‘green room’;

the remarkable and perspective changing green screen in the room enables students to take photos or film and with computer technology, to substitute the green background with digital images. The Hall expansion means the school now has a permanent stage and impressive behind the scenes stage areas, music room, kitchen facilities, toilets, air conditioning, permanent after school care office and a gigantic ceiling fan. The Hall can now fit the whole student body for assemblies. Principal Eric Greentree said having the new facilities had been very motivational. “Now the challenge is up to us to make the most of those learning spaces. We’ve been doing things the best we can with the resources we had, with the resources we’ve now got it really extends our horizon for the potential to engage kids and their learning and that’s what it all comes down to,” he said. The funding for the facilities was from the Building the Education Revolution (BER) program, part of the Government’s Nation Building Economic Stimulus Plan. “The BER money really enhanced and provided for the next level of what the community had already been engaged in putting into the school. We’re happy. We’re very happy,” Principal Greentree said. Guided tours of the new facilities should be available at Beerwah’s Big Night Out on August 5, which will run from 3.00pm to 9.00pm.

Caboolture High School 50th anniversary celebrations Former Caboolture High School students, Barbara Moloney (nee Way), School Captain 1964, and son Terry Moloney, School Captain of 1992, recently returned to the school in anticipation of the 50 years celebration to be held on Friday, October 28 and Saturday, October 29. Barbara, along with other past students and staff, is busily making Terry Moloney and mother Barbara arrangements for the celebration. Mock Parliament with Federal Member – Peter Slipper On Tuesday, July 12, our Year 9 SOSE students, from Unity College participated in a Mock Parliament that was conducted by the Honourable Peter Slipper (MP). Mr Slipper generously gave of his time to spend the entire day with three separate classes of Year 9 students. The lesson involved a Mock Parliament in which the students participated in roles as members of the parliament. They dressed up in the traditional clothing worn by the Speaker and other Parliament personnel, the room was designed to look just like the format of parliament and the students took on roles as Ministers, Shadow Ministers, the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition. The Bill that was presented to their parliament was whether all households should have rainwater tanks, and the meatier topic of whether Australia should ban live trade of animals overseas? The students embraced the experience and enhanced their learning through the role play. They took the opportunity to ask Mr Slipper a wide range of questions including what his opinion was in regard to the carbon tax and whether our troops should be bought home from Afghanistan. We thank Mr Slipper for donating his time to this valuable learning activity.

GCCC opens its doors this Saturday Glasshouse Country Christian College is about to celebrate its biggest event of the calendar year and the whole community is invited. Local State Member, Mr Andrew Powell was recently invited to attend an afternoon tea with the Beerwah-Peachester RSL Sub-branch Women’s Auxiliary. Mr Powell was warmly welcomed by the President, Mrs Kay Farrell and presented with a certificate of appreciation for his attendance. A Queensland flag was then given to the Women’s Auxiliary but not before the ladies were quizzed about the significance of the blue Maltese cross found on the flag. Mrs Elba Campbell was the only person to offer any insight into the reason for its presence on the Queensland Flag. After the formalities were completed afternoon tea was enjoyed by all accompanied by lively conversation and lots of laughter.

'Take two Toastmasters meetings and call me in the morning'. Does this sound like an unlikely prescription from the doctor? Based on medical and sociological research, it’s actually sound advice for improving one’s wellbeing. Pick up any piece of Toastmasters literature or visit www.toastmasters.org and you’ll find an array of membership benefits: improved communication and leadership skills, personal and career enhancement, development of self confidence, networking and camaraderie. But what you do not find on this list is a mention that Toastmasters membership can be good for your health! Modern medical and health-related research supports the notion that a person’s active involvement in organisations that engage the mind – such as Toastmasters International – benefits one’s health. It can positively affect a variety of conditions, including stress, mild depression, heart problems and some of the debilities of advance aging. Nothing in this broad spectrum of research

specifically names Toastmasters. Therefore, I’m not suggesting membership in Toastmasters as a substitute for necessary medical treatment. But the research does indicate that socially oriented organisations like ours provide settings that can benefit a person’s health. To be sure, Toastmasters engage in stimulating and interactive types of activities; they meet and become friends with a diverse group of people, they learn and improve themselves in a mutually supportive environment. All of these activities can benefit a member’s sense of well-being as well as physical health. The Glasshouse Country Toastmasters Club is a friendly fun loving club. There is great camaraderie and support in our group. Come and join us for a meeting and find out for yourself. We meet every 2nd and 4th Thursday of the month in the hall of the Church on the Rise, Peachester Road, Beerwah. Cansurvive is a cancer support and information service. Support Groups are held each fortnight and are open to members of the public. We are a group that both uplifts and supports on the path to healing. We aim to help people with cancer see a broader view of the body’s healing journey. The Cansurvive Centre provides an extensive library, holistic and main stream medical information, counselling, meditation, practitioner listing, educational seminars and support groups. Support groups are held every second Tuesday mornings from 10.00am to 12.30pm. Caloundra Family History Research held its general meeting on July 21, and the guest speaker for the afternoon was Mr Bob Buick. He spoke at length about his experiences in Vietnam, the endless rain during the monsoon season and Australia’s part in this conflict. A veteran of the Battle of Long Tan, (August 18, 1966) for which he received the Military Medal, Bob was a Platoon Sergeant in Delta Company, 6th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment. During the battle, the commander of 11 Platoon was killed and Sergeant Bob Buick assumed command of the platoon. Despite being heavily outnumbered, with many killed and wounded, it was a decisive Australian victory. A US Presidential Unit Citation was awarded to D Company 6RAR, by President Lyndon B Johnson on May 28, 1968, for the unit's actions and extraordinary heroism at Long Tan. Normally given to a battalion, this award was the first for a company and 6RAR remains the most decorated company to serve in the Australian Army. The group’s rooms and library are open for research every Saturday and the third Thursday of the month, from 9.30am to 12.30pm. Every other Thursday of the month the rooms are open for the full day, from 9.30am to 4.00pm. Specialist interest groups for UK countries, as well as Germany, convene for a couple of hours each month at various times and members use the meetings to learn new searching techniques, network and assist each other in their research. The Annual General Meeting will be held at the next gathering of the group, on August 18, in the Guide Hut in Arthur Street, Caloundra. Re: the present work in the Township of Glass House Mountains

Many of us in the Glasshouse Mountains have a different view of the importance of the work in the Glass House Mountain Township. I do not know where the money comes from, but I think we are all Queenslanders and we should help each other. The money should be spent where it is most important. Re: where is the balance?

Following last week’s letter, ‘where is the balance’, about how council funds could have been better spent in Glass House, I have a similar complaint in Peachester. I live along a 2km road (a cul-de-sac comprising Range Road and Neill Road) with about a dozen houses along it. A few years ago, several stretches near homes received a ‘dust seal’ to reduce the dust reaching those homes. It was much appreciated of course, although done without first improving the multiple points of poor visibility. Now we have an additional 100 metre strip being sealed. Some machinery for this work arrived before the school holidays, and stood idle for a while. I was away for some of the school holidays but I reckon that workmen have been working on that 100metre strip for at least two weeks. Yesterday I counted 10 vehicles and machines. The quality of the work is possibly far higher than the previous dust seals, as truckloads of material has been added and the road has been widened

more than the width of the other parts. All of this is being done for a section that is relatively straight and is lucky to see one vehicle an hour. The operation has even included two flagmen for this period, safeguarding the residents and visitors of the three homes beyond the work! I have to repeat: Two weeks work on 100 metres of relatively straight road servicing three homes. I cannot believe it is really happening! How was the decision made? In particular, why aren’t residents consulted? I can think of other sections on my road that need work more urgently, and I can think of a busy road in Peachester (Storrs Road) that is in even more need of attention. Every reader of this paper can probably think of a different and better use for council funds. The Sunshine Coast Council is not consulting when it matters! Before I wrote this letter I contacted council for an explanation in the hope there might be a good one. I haven’t received any reply. Frances Harper Peachester

We need to act now

I am a Glass House Mountains local trying to support the ban of the live cattle export trade. I saw the horrific footage on Four Corners and I’m so traumatised by what I witnessed I want to do anything I can to help this be a ban for good. What I witnessed was so horrifying, it included eye gouging, hitting, kicking, whipping, tails broken tendons cut, cattle were suffering a painful death having their throats cut several times whilst still fully conscious, then thrashing and bellowing in pain for minutes before they died. They also slaughter them in front of each other. That was so upsetting watching the last cow shiver with fear. I’ll never forget the look in their eyes. It’s not only the horrific slaughter they encounter, but thousands die on the boat ride alone, there have been years of investigations and training into the treatment of animals in live export trade and it consistently reveals appalling animal cruelty. This sets an example that profit is more important than animal welfare and those animals are nothing more then chattels to be traded and slaughtered. So I am calling on fellow locals who feel the same way I do to become more informed about the facts surrounding the issue and then for you to join with me in making our voices be heard. Parliament will be voting on August 18 on whether Australia should ban the trade for good, so now is the time to make sure your local parliamentarian or senate knows how you feel. Level crossing incidents

It is with great sadness that I write this letter following two serious level crossing incidents on the Queensland Rail network in the last fortnight. A young man lost his life at Geebung in southeast Queensland, while three people were sent to hospital following a collision between a truck and the Sunlander train near Ingham. These two events have again brought the dangers associated with level crossings into the spotlight. Every Queensland level crossing has some form of protection, whether it is boom gates, flashing lights, a stop or give way sign. We have recently completed a projected worth over $50 million upgrading level crossings around the state, and this work is ongoing by our dedicated team. However, it is also important to note that most of the close calls are happening at level crossings with boom gates, flashing lights and pedestrian gates. It is remarkable to think that anyone would think they can beat a train, but our train drivers are reporting near misses every day. I would urge every Queenslander to spend time and think about what they would be leaving behind if they took a risk at a level crossing. The difference between a fatality and a near miss can be a fraction of a second, and the events of the last two weeks are a tragic reminder of the importance of being vigilant around all rail crossings and obeying the warnings signs and protection which exist for your safety. The Queensland Rail team will continue its campaign to educate motorists and pedestrians about rail safety, but ultimately everyone has a role to play in making sure we all do the right thing when it comes to level crossings. Next time you approach a level crossing consider what would you miss? Waiting for a train might cost you a couple of minutes, not waiting might cost you a lot more. Station parking back on track

As a father of two children I know that being a parent is a wonderful, exciting experience with many challenges. Unfortunately, as has been said many times ‘parenting does not come with a manual' and sometimes parents need help – Lifeline Sunshine Coast is currently offering free parent support counselling sessions. If you will remember I recently wrote an article about car parking at the Landsborough Railway Station and then had the Shadow Transport Minister attend some weeks later for a meeting with local business people. At the time, Transport Minister, Rachel Nolan dismissed the use of any area to supplement the car parking, despite a critical increase in population numbers and potential growth for our region. I have now secured a commitment from the current Minister for Transport, to have officers of her department meet with “one or two selected business owners” to discuss “the lack of parking facilities at Landsborough Railway Station.” This is welcome news and I am now putting in place the process to start negotiations to alleviate the incredible congestion in Landsborough and the economic impact upon business owners. We know the car park on any week day is full to capacity with hundreds of people driving to the station and leaving their cars either at the station or in the surrounding streets, catching the train to Brisbane, and leaving their cars blocking access to stores, for hours on end. The solutions will not be simple; however as was pointed out to me by the Landsborough Area Community Association, there is vacant land on the other side of the railway station that could be used. That would take some planning, because access could be an issue. This could be a temporary solution to the problem with long term solutions having to be sorted out. Irrespective, this matter is back on track and I want to congratulate the people of Landsborough, in particular the business owners, for keeping at this issue. Don’t forget we have some 50,000 residents pouring into Caloundra South, plus new homes being built right across the hinterland and Landsborough needs to capitalise on the potential that will bring. Congested areas around shops mean people will not stop there and go elsewhere for their groceries and other items. Now is the time to act.

Bruce Highway widening A reminder to those who have not yet signed the petition calling for the widening of the Bruce Highway to six lanes between Caboolture and the Sunshine Coast that the petition is available in my office at Buddina and also at the office of Andrew Powell MP, Maleny. It is very important that we get upgrades to the highway to ensure it is as efficient and safe as possible and able to meet the demands of our growing population. I’m urging concerned Sunshine Coast residents to make an effort to add their names to the list so we can put pressure on the Government to address this vital need. Community Notices Peachester Playgroup

Meetings take place Tuesday and Thursday mornings, 9.30am - 11.00am during term time. We all feel the kids toys, especially the dolls are getting rather old and tatty so hope for donations from the general community with any preloved, in reasonable condition, dolls and dolls clothes. Rather than rush out and buy new, we thought it best to try and recycle and maybe give people a worthy cause to have a clean out. Peachester playgroup is located behind the Peachester church and drop offs of any kind would be most welcome during our operating times, as mentioned above.

I had ventured out on a three day ride with a few good mates on our motorcycles. The weather was perfect on the first day, but overnight, winter rains set the gloomy atmosphere for the ride home. The roads were slippery, the air cold, boots and gloves soaking wet... every corner demanded full attention, especially on some of those second rate mountain passes. But it does challenge you to either live with a positive attitude... or complain the whole way home. Cold hard rain brings out either the best or the worst in us. You get to know your true inner self under pressure and what really is in your heart. It’s easy to have it all together when there are

News in Brief

Last Sunday, the Glasshouse SES Group responded to a call about 12 noon for assistance on Mt Tibrogargan where a 35 year man had fallen 80 metres. On arrival at the East Face of Mt Tibrogargan, members of the SES assisted Ambulance officers reach the scene where they found that the man, who was part of a group of three from Brisbane, in a serious condition with numerous injuries. The climbers were only climbing on the lower slopes of the East Face and had no intentions of going up very high. The injured man, who was the experienced climber of the group, had free climbed up higher and had secured a rope to rocks. Apparently he gave it a good pull to test that it was secure and when it gave a little he fell heavily down the rock face. The Ambulance Officers and SES members attended the man. Meanwhile the AGL helicopter attended and a Doctor and Paramedic were lowered to the scene.

The condition of the man was not good and he was prepared for immediate evacuation to the Royal Brisbane Hospital SES Group Leader, Robert Barry stated that the condition of Mt Tibrogargan was becoming more fragile and whilst many experienced climbers accept the challenges, there is always a high degree of danger on Tibrogargan’s cliffs. He thanked the crew of Tim, Jason, Brett, Louise, Dave, Roger, Angie and Lou for their efforts on the day.

Thursday’s ‘Open Pairs’ was won on a count back from the runners-up, by Bob Bloomer and Ron Wilson with two wins plus 46 points. The runners-up were Brian Saunders and Graham Turton with the highest point score of 24 in game two who also won on a count back from Barry Richardson and Laurie Medlen. Round two of the 2011 Men’s Pennant Competition on Saturday resulted in wins to Glasshouse in all Divisions. Division two defeated Bongaree 56/53, Division four defeated Caboolture Lakes 45/44 and Division five

The Bulldogs travelled to Kawana on Saturday Night to take on the Kawana Dolphins. A Grade had to call a number of Reserve Graders and Under 18’s to fill in for our Injured players and they stepped up to the challenge to push the well credentialed Dolphins all the way to go down 24-0 and all the boys deserve a pat on the back for how they performed. With a large injury toll, the Reserve Graders had to forfeit on the night and will need to regroup quickly for the remaining three games of the season. Under 18’s also did it tough on the day to go down 32-6 but get the opportunity in the next three games to finish off the season on a positive note.

Found: Injured on the ground in a backyard at Glass House Mountains. Transported to: The Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital by Cory and James from the Australia Zoo Rescue Unit. Veterinary Assessment: Dr Robyn assessed a very wobbly Furby, who tends to have trouble standing up and is unable to fly. Although Furby favours the left leg, x-rays showed no obvious fractures to either the legs or pelvis.

Treatment: Furby was administered pain relief and fluids, and Dr Robyn has set up a warm, comfortable incubator in the Nursery ICU for Furby to rest in while being monitored by our nurses. Future: Furby is still too little to be returned to the wild just yet, and will soon move on to a registered wildlife carer until old enough to survive in the bush. AZWH Statistic: Birds are the most commonly treated animal at the hospital, with over half of all admissions so far this year being an avian species.
