FROM THE EDITOR IN this edition it would be fair to say “Mum’s the word” as there is plenty of focus on how to spoil your mum this Mother’s Day, on Sunday, May 9. If you do decide to buy a Mother’s Day gift why not consider shopping local first? We know all mums are different, and although flowers and chocolates can be lovely we have put together plenty of other great ideas and suggestions, including having her car serviced, a nice massage or natural therapy treatment, or something for the house or the garden. Mother’s Day doesn’t have to be about how much you spend to show your love, as many mums would love the gift of your time. Three Hearts tribute single

WE recently put the call out to our Facebook followers to share their favourite photo showing a special bond, or the laughter, fun and joy between a mum, nanna or even a great grandma and the important little people in their life. We had quite a few lovely entries but the one we chose was of Glass House Mountains mum Ada Moline Ruiz with her ﬁrst born Marc. Ada told us that the photo means a lot to her, becoming a mother at the age of 23 when some of her friends and family thought it was too early for her to take on the responsibility. However, Ada said she followed her heart and from the moment she heard his little heart on the ﬁrst scan she knew she was born to be a mum. “The love I feel for him is so big and has no limits. I never regret my decision. I was destined to be a mum,” Ada said.

MALENY musician Tom Richter has written a heartfelt musical tribute for his stepdaughter Kate Leadbetter, her partner Matthew Field and their unborn son, Miles, that was released publicly in mid-April. Local readers may recall that Kate, Matthew and Miles tragically lost their lives on Australia Day afterr being hit by a car while they were walking along a suburban street in Brisbane. The impact of this devasting loss was felt particularly hard locally due to the long-term connections of Tom, his wife Jeannie and their daughter Kate to the Maleny and hinterland communities. Written to honour the deeply loved family, as well as providing a creative outlet to help work through his family’s grief, Tom composed the song just a few days before the combined funeral for Matt, Kate and Miles in February. The song ‘Three Hearts’ can now be downloaded from Bandcamp, iTunes, Spotify and other music streaming platforms, and features hinterland vocalist Jen Mize accompanied by Tom on guitar. While paying tribute to Matt, Kate and Miles, Tom said the song has also been released as a charity single in support of the Queensland Homicide Victims Support Group (QHVSG) who assisted Tom, Jeannie and their family in the aftermath of the tragedy. Proceeds from downloads will go towards a private memorial for Kate. The memorial will be a way of

Maleny Show, COVID safe and ready to go! THE Maleny Show Society committee has been working non-stop for the past few months to put together a COVID safe event that includes many traditional show features and a few new additions including an exciting ﬁreworks and monster truck program on both evenings. Maleny Show Society secretary Lois White said with most of the show activities outdoors it meant many COVID safe requirements would be quite subtle. However, patrons must follow social distancing indoors and numbers will be limited within the pavilions. “Also, tickets will need to be prepurchased online before entry and we will be using the Queensland COVID app on the day to check in,” Lois said.

This year’s show is on Friday-Saturday, May 28-29. To secure the best priced entry you can already head to the show society’s new website and purchase an annual membership. Membership for adults is $20 and $15 concession, which includes entry for both days of the show, as well as free entry tickets for children up to 15. Day entry tickets will be available closer to the show. This year there is no printed competitors’ schedule but the complete digital version is available from the website. Most of the competition elements from previous shows will still happen but entry deadlines have been brought forward to 5pm Friday, May 14. Wherever possible, competitors are being encouraged to submit their entry

Monster trucks will entertain the crowds on both nights via the easy-to-use Showday online portal that can also be accessed through the Maleny Show website. You just need to set up a login. Each section will have the details of what day and time your entries must be submitted to the pavilion for judging, which will take place, depending on the category/class, between MondayThursday, May 24-27. You don’t need to pay for your entry online as you pay on the day of judging. And you don’t need to worry if you run out of time or change your mind, as you only pay for what you present for judging. While online entry is strongly encouraged, manual entries (post, phone, email or in person to the Show Society oﬀice) can be submitted by the

Show Society president Winston Johnston said the show society had done a brilliant job with the assistance of Rick Vickers from Maleny Rotary in putting a COVID safe plan together following their training in February. “We are very pleased that all the plans have now been completed and accepted,” he said. Ewen Maddock Dam upgrade By Sonia Isaacs Clark AFTER nearly 12 months of improvement work, the Ewen Maddock Dam upgrade has been completed six months ahead of schedule. A public reopening event to showcase the new facilities was held at Maddock Park last Friday, April 23, in time for the Anzac Day long weekend. Locals and visitors to the recreation area can now enjoy a swag of new and improved amenities including a new beach seating area at the popular dam swimming zone; new picnic shelters, tables and benches; upgraded barbeque facilities; connected concrete pathways; and improved playground facilities.

A few minor improvements, including the new playground shade sail and boardwalk repair, are still to be completed. However, the early reopening of the park has been welcomed, especially the on-water recreation activities and designated swimming area, which also includes a new vessel launch pad and wash bay facility. SEQ Water updates indicate the completed Ewen Maddock Dam stage 2A upgrade has now successfully strengthened the dam embankment wall, with the work completed in December last year.

The upgrade involved the installation of a chimney ﬁlter and created greater capacity to withstand extreme weather events through a 1.6m high concrete parapet wall. Since late last year, the lake’s water level was lowered to less than 60% of its full supply capacity for safety reasons during the upgrade. This has now been

lifted d and d the h lake l k has h been b allowed ll d to reﬁll naturally, with the recent rain and wet season resulting in the lake currently sitting at more than 80% capacity, heralding a prefect return to recreation and on-water activities. Landsborough locals ‘bummed’ by council LANDSBOROUGH local Jason Coultis thought Sunshine Coast Council was having a laugh when he received a notice in his letterbox about a planned hazard reduction fire. “Well it’s official,” Jason wrote on a Landsborough community Facebook page, “according to council this is Landsborough’s ‘prescribed bum area’ lol.” According to a flyer showing where the hazard reduction would take place, a label appears to read “prescribed bum area” rather than “prescribed burn area”. This may have been an unfortunate consequence of the font style used but what followed was a cascade of cheeky quips and witty word plays, with the council being the butt of the jokes. “It’s where council should be sticking their rates each year.” “Sounds like they’ve labelled it as the arse end of Landsborough.” “Looks like it is located ‘behind’ Wintzloff Road.” “The backside of town.” “I can’t get my bearings right... is this map arse about face?” “I thought the prescribed bum area was where those young teens smoke outside the train station.”

On a more serious note, council’s fire management officer Guy Morgan explained that the burn in the bushland park called Racemosa Reserve is planned for this month or next, depending on suitable conditions, with the aim to protect our community and protect and enhance the environment. “Planned burns help to reduce the amount of forest fuel in targeted locations prior to the typical bushfire season, which normally occurs in spring on the Sunshine Coast,” Mr Morgan said. “Burning is undertaken in the cooler months to reduce fire intensity, resulting in manageable fires compared to potential unplanned bushfires.” According to Mr Morgan, periodic fires are vital for the ongoing health and survival of many plants including the iconic and now endangered wildflower Christmas bells. “Fire is important for our forests and the animals that have adapted to live in them, with over 60 per cent of council’s bushland needing appropriate fire regimes to thrive,” he said. Council has a trained team who plan and prepare for burns and monitor the weather closely waiting for the right conditions.

They then collaborate with other agencies such as the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services and the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service to undertake the scheduled burns. From now on, landholders such as council, Queensland Parks and Wildlife and private landowners (with the assistance of the various Rural Fire Brigades) will be undertaking hazard

reduction burns across the region. These are regular and normal events for country regions such as ours. They will create smoke and sometimes areas will be closed to public access but in the grand scheme of things, reducing the risk of wildﬁre and promoting the environmental and ecological sustainability of our natural areas is well worth the small inconvenience.

New signage completes RSL upgrade project By Sonia Isaacs Clark HANDCRAFTED signs created by members of the Glasshouse Country Men’s Shed have been installed at the Gilvear and Morgan rooms in the Glasshouse Country RSL, marking the ﬁnishing touches to the sub branch’s renovation project. The space has been beautifully transformed into an upgraded club and community venue. Glasshouse Country RSL Sub Branch president Brian Machin said the new signs were exactly what they had wanted. Brian said the sub branch appreciated that the Men’s Shed group wanted to be involved by contributing their time and eﬀort into making the signage for the two rooms. “The signs were well received by the Morgan and Gilvear families, and it is veryy pleasing to have the signs up,” he said. “We were more than happy to have these signs installed as part of our refurbishments as a dedication to these two families who have contributed so much to both the RSL and Glass House area.” The Morgan Room pays tribute to former foundation member and longserving past treasurer George Morgan.

His daughter Lorraine McNamara, speaking on behalf of her four brothers Des (Jock), Barry (Curly), Glen and Keith, said they were delighted the signage was completed and were very appreciative of the privilege for their family of having the room named after their father. “It was a real buzz to walk in and see the Morgan and Gilvear room signs up,” Lorraine said. “The Men’s Shed did a great job and it is lovely to see the upgrade project for the RSL completed. As a family we are overjoyed to have our dad honoured in this way.”

New club general manager appointed THE Maleny Golf Club’s management committee is pleased to announce the appointment of experienced sports administrator Stephen Porter as its new general managerr to drive the club’s continued growth and d development. Not to be confused with his local namesake, who has a crossing on the course named after him, this Stephen Porter, 59, is right-handed and plays off a handicap of 19. President Jeff Kruse said Stephen was highly credentialled and brought a wealth of management and business development experience to the club, including four years as secretary manager of Peregian Springs Golf Club. “This is a significant appointment and comes at a pivotal time when the golf club stands ready to take advantage of all that has been achieved and be taken to the next level of development,” Jeff said.

Domestic and family violence awareness

MALENY Neighbourhood Centre, in partnership with Speak Up Now – Stop Domestic and Family Violence Maleny and Blackall Range, is organising a special community awareness event on Thursday, May 20 as part of DV Prevention Month. Weather permitting, a candlelight ceremony will be held in Tesch Park at 5pm followed by a contemplative walk to the neighbourhood centre for an informal gathering and discussions, with a barbeque supper and local entertainment provided. Both locations will feature guest speakers with knowledge and insight into domestic and family violence issues. Maleny Neighbourhood Centre management committee president Ian Demack said the event was an important way of raising support for the issue. “This collaborative evening is a way we can bring people’s awareness to the issue of domestic and family violence,” Ian said. “We hope by providing this forum that the community has a space to express their thoughts and feelings on the issue, but also collectively we can look to finding solutions as a community.” Val France, from Speak Up Now, said guests from local, state and federal government had been invited to attend, along with representatives from

SCOPE (Suncoast Cooloola Outreach Prevention and Education) DV. “In 2020, 56 women and 21 children lost their lives to DV, so while we seek to mindfully remember those who have lost their lives, we also strive to raise awareness that this is a serious issue that we as a community should be aware of, while also taking it forward to look to ways we can reduce these incidents,” Val said. “The candlelight ceremony will feature a symbolic centre piece of women’s and children’s shoes surrounded by candles as a poignant way of honouring the women and children who had lost their lives to domestic and family violence.” Val hopes these community awareness raising events will assist people to look for the signs of domestic and family violence and draw more attention to the issue in the sincere hope that domestic and family violence incidents are greatly reduced, if not completely removed. THE Maleny Bookshop held its inaugural Beyond the Covers, a local author showcase and book club members event, to almost capacity numbers on Tuesday, April 20. With the idea for a light-hearted evening that promoted Sunshine Coast authors and encouraged local literary lovers to meet other keen readers, the evening featured locally made finger food, icebreaker games and the opportunity to meet three special mystery guests. Maleny Bookshop co-owner Ian Bayly said he was thrilled with the success of the event. Ian said that while there were many literary events in Maleny, he felt an event that specifically targeted local authors would be appreciated and he was delighted with how well it was received. “Although we are predominantly a second-hand bookshop, we do stock

Adam Holloway, author of ‘Duty Nobly Done’ and Dr Suzanne Cremen, author of ‘From Career to Calling’ and sell new copies of the work of 20 Sunshine Coast authors, and so we were pleased to have local guest authors,” he said. Adam Holloway, Leigh Robshaw and Mary Garden came along to discuss their latest books. Attendees enjoyed some mingling games followed by delicious finger food prepared by Maleny Lane favourite Sankarsana Das. The attendees were then divided into three smaller groups that rotated so all had the opportunity to chat with and ask questions of the three guest authors. “It was a bit like a speed dating model for meeting authors,” Ian said. “Each group had around 15 minutes to chat with Adam, Leigh and Mary in rotation, which allowed more targeted questions and a great opportunity to meet the authors directly.” Ian said the plan was to host similar events every second month, with the next event likely to be the end of June. Get covered in colour BEERWAH Sportsground is set to be covered in colour at the end of May when the ﬁrst Beerwah Colour Stampede takes place. Organiser Danielle Gibbons said she was thrilled that Beerwah was hosting its very own colour run to raise money for Beerwah Kindy, Beerwah Sportsground and Beerwah and District Rural Fire Brigade. The event has been two years in the making, with the initial date last year having to be postponed. “We had plans for this event to happen last year but with COVID we unfortunately had to shelve those plans, so we’re very excited to be able to bring it together this year and get the community together to enjoy this fun event,” Danielle said. “We hope to make this an annual event for the community to raise money for a variety of local charities and organisations.

Coast to Country exhibition at Vianta Arts “We have an amazing community and we choose to support each other as much as possible.” Participants will have a blast running or walking the 5km course, with five different colour stations and obstacles suitable for all ages along the way including a bubble/foam station. Session start times run every hour from 8am through to 3pm. THROUGHOUT May, Vianta Arts in Beerwah will feature the creative talent of Don Milner. After working as a graphic designer and illustrator for more than two decades, Don has made the transition to a fine artist, a painter and passionate storyteller. He celebrates his newfound freedom of expression through a range of mediums including acrylic, oils, pastels, charcoal and drawing. Don said that his world constantly inspires him to paint and draw, which manifests and reflects in his subjects of many different genres. However, portraiture, seascapes, landscapes and still life dominate what inspires, colours and enriches his world as an artist. His honest, intuitive approach to painting has won Don many awards and accolades that has led to many

Musos mark decade of performing

Contributed by Judy Young MEMBERS of Caloundra Court, Order of the Amaranth, held their installation on April 17 in the Beerburrum School of Arts Hall. Joan Scott and Norrie Morris presented a cheque for $500 to Steve Rook of the Glass House Mountains Rural Fire Service. The RFS has been the regular recipient of our charity donations.

THE Glasshouse Musos are looking forward to celebrating their ten-year milestone at the Beerwah Hotel from 6–9pm on Tuesday, May 11. With plenty of great local talent on offer, including the very experienced Ian B MacLeod who will perform some of his rockabilly hits, as well as some young performers who, over the past decade had their first public shows appearing on the Glasshouse Musos stage. “We originally heard Murray Law and his songwriter mother Karen Law about eight years ago with Murray just into high school,” Michael Whiticker from Glasshouse Musos said. “He’s now undertaking a music degree in the city and playing the sweetest guitar and is about to release a new album. “The Josland Boys, Cory and likely brother Scott, with their dad Gary will also take to the stage. “Gary first appeared at the Musos in our inaugural year, 2011, and Cory followed a year or so later. Cory might have been in his final year of school at the time. He was certainly still a young fella, but already beginning to display the huge talent that he has gone on to develop as both a guitarist and singer.

“Finally, we have Julian Munyard. JJ was tiny when he first appeared on our stage as a bright, wavy haired little nine-year-old courting a huge Fender Stratocaster. “Recently you would have seen him on the cover of GC&M News. JJ has finished school and released his first EP to critical acclaim. It is a very smooth sounding album with the feel of someone well beyond his years,” Michael said. The Australian Government could be perceived as a drug dealer, knowingly supplying addictive drugs like cigarettes and alcohol and then taxing them in an exploitive way, in the same way a drug dealer will knowingly sell ice, speed, pot so the customer will return again and again. If the Australian Government was serious on cigarettes, for example, they would ban all retail sales in Australia. If an individual still wanted them, they could source them on the internet. Lost hearing aid

It was very good to see that most of the local people complied with the Premier’s edict to wear masks. A small price to pay for safety and peace of mind. However, those who wear glasses and hearing aids will know what a juggle that was. Taking oﬀ the mask often resulted in pulling hearing aids out and, in my case, losing one. Home needed

I think we all know that there is a serious shortage of rental accommodation in this area as well as in the wider Australian regions. It seems this is particularly bad for older single women.

I am writing this letter as an appeal on behalf of someone I know, a much older woman living on her own and supplementing her pension by helping out in other people’s gardens. She was originally British but has been in Australia for many years. She has been renting accommodation close to Maleny but has just been told that as her rental is to be redeveloped, she must move out within a few weeks. She has a much-loved cat, her dog having died recently, and is naturally reluctant to move without her pet. (Incidentally, it is apparently against the law now for an owner to refuse to accept a tenant because they have a pet, although this is not something I knew until I was advised about it by a neighbour who is also trying to help her.) She needs just a small place to live, preferably within striking distance of Maleny where her garden work is. It needs to be self-contained, that is with bathroom and kitchen facilities. A small garden area would be a plus as she is passionate about gardening. From my knowledge she would be an ideal tenant – she is full of beans, very fit, does not (and never has) drunk tea, coffee or alcohol, and is so positive I cannot believe it, in spite of many knocks she has received over her life. Vaccine roll out

Now that the federal government’s vaccine roll out strategy has fallen oﬀ the rails (to say the least, a total

disaster), there is a need for the public to be reassured about the moderated plans for the roll out. This also comes at a time when there is strong evidence of vaccine hesitancy by over 50s and the knowledge that Australians under 50 will not be vaccinated until after September this year. To resuscitate the government’s vaccine strategy and increase transparency, there is a need for our federal and state members to hold a series of public meetings on the Sunshine Coast, with the participation of the health experts, to allay the fears of the over 50s about the safety of the AZ vaccine and to give more deﬁnite timetables about the roll out of the Pﬁzer vaccine. AS always, it comes to pass that good things must end and after 17 years with my beloved horses at 19 Coonowrin Road I have to shift to make way for development of the land. Thanks to Barry and Judy Fullerton I was able to move there about 17 years ago. After Barry passed away and the land was sold the new owner allowed us to remain until now. I have fond memories of the early days when all the kids were there either learning to ride or improving their riding. We would all head out Saturday or Sunday with ﬁve or six kids and sometimes their parents. They called it the Glass House Saddle Club. I have many people to thank who assisted me during my time there. Dave Webb always kept an eye on the horses and kept my oId tractor going so I could slash the grass and clean the stables. Also, Sue Joseph for her help when I was in need. There were many others as well. Three of the girls who started riding when they were just school kids are now married but still keep in touch with me. The Bassett Barks and quarry drivers paid us the most courtesy – always slowed down and never used their exhaust brake that would startle the horses. Such an Order can take a considerable period of time and involves a great deal of work. It also can lead to ill-will and disputes between your loved ones.

By Sonia Isaacs Clark SPREAD the word – Glasshouse Country Men’s Shed is a friendly space for men, regardless of age, to regularly come together and have a yarn, get stuck into a project, learn new skills or just have somewhere to go to get out of the house for a few hours or days each week. Located near Glasshouse Country Care in Beerwah, this approachable and welcoming group of blokes, predominately aged from their early 50s to mid-80s, hold a meeting most Wednesday mornings from 8.30am-12noon, with the shed open on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings.

Previously located at the old Beerwah recycling centre, the group has been at the current shed since around 2014. It is well equipped with a wide variety of tools, workshop equipment and workbenches to suit a myriad of projects and interests such as woodwork, leather work, metal fabrication, industrial sewing, gardening, lapidary (stone cutting), small engine workshop and more. Treasurer Rick Canhan said members could come along and do as much or as little as they wanted when the shed was open. “We are fortunate to have a supportive and generally jovial lot of men who all get along well and have a bit of laugh,” Rick said. “Some of our guys will just come along ﬁrst thing in the morning for a brew, read the paper and head oﬀ, and others come along and hang around until we close. “Our main meeting day is Wednesday, where we catch up and talk about what’s going on at the shed and share some stories about our lives, and the other days we get into our projects.”

Members of Glasshouse Country Men’s Shed Rick said the group unoﬀicially referred to their space as The Kennel in an aﬀectionate way as a place where “old dogs can learn new tricks” or sometimes even where “old dogs need a refuge if they are in the proverbial doghouse”. In the past the group has taken on practical projects that utilise the skills of its members, often assisting other groups or organisations in the local area such as making buddy benches for local schools or crafting signage.

Currently some members of the group are creating new outdoor signs for the new grassroots community space The Hub next to Beerwah skate park. The group has more than 50 active members and new members are always welcome from the Glasshouse Country area. IF you are a Meals on Wheels client of Glasshouse Country Care you would have noticed a few changes lately. The local aged care and disability services provider has launched a new menu and new look packaging that makes getting home-cooked meals provided directly to your door even more appealing. Glasshouse Country Care’s general manager Clare Mullins said the ready-made meal market was very competitive. “While we know we provide a superior product, we also wanted to oﬀer our clients a menu that has something for every taste,” Clare said.

THE club’s April outing was to Sit & Chill Bakery Café in Beerburrum where we had a lovely morning tea and a talk on native bee keeping from Anne Ross of Hive Haven. Later we took a walk across to the start of the Beerburrum walking track to visit a bench bearing a plaque in memory of Maree Rau, who was a friend to many of us, a member of our club and served on the committee as secretary. Our next outing will be at 10am on May 6 when we will visit Maroochy Botanical Gardens for a walk and morning tea. Any ladies who are interested in coming along to one of our events

However, the good news is that the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia’s specialist telenursing service can answer questions and provide a vital lifeline to those diagnosed for free. Professor Jeﬀ Dunn AO, Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia CEO, said that, with just a phone call, men living with

prostate cancer can talk to an expert nurse who understands what they are going through and can explain their treatment options and side eﬀects of the disease. “This is a much-needed service and one we are proud to provide – giving back to a community that has given so much to our work,” Jeﬀ said. Small business focus Money for Nothin MAY is Small Business Month and Maleny Commerce is holding a special breakfast on Tuesday, May 11 at Maleny Hotel from 7-8am. Guest speakers will be Jo Nolan, from Queensland Country Bank, and Michael O’Brien, from the Chamber of Commerce and Industry Queensland, who will talk to attendees about human resources and retaining staff. After the breakfast meeting the chamber will host a two-hour mini workshop, subsidised by the Australian Small Business Advisory Service and Maleny Commerce. ELECTED Making a diﬀerence to family and domestic violence

MOST of my time as your member of parliament is spent dealing with local issues that are specific to our community and the needs of individuals living here. However, sometimes I am called upon to take a role in developing national policy that affects all Australians, including here in the hinterland. This month I released the report of an inquiry I chaired into the scourge of domestic, family and sexual violence in Australia. A woman in this country dies every eight days at the hands of a current or former partner in communities like ours right across the country and this situation is not getting better. The inquiry I chaired worked on this report for eight months, hearing from more than 350 victim survivors and experts. The committee found that we all need to significantly step up our efforts against family, domestic and sexual violence across the board – in our homes, schools, workplaces and community groups. First, we need to expand our definition of domestic violence to capture all of its insidious forms and the full range of victim survivors. Second, we need to hold governments

at every level to account with clear targets and a new independent national commissioner to oversee and report on our progress against them. Third, we need far more education in our schools about consent and respectful relationships and far more awareness in emergency services about how to identify and respond to this violence. Fourth, we need increased needs-based funding for services to support survivors and their children. Finally, we need to hold perpetrators to account with tougher criminal penalties, better sharing of information to help people identify serial perpetrators and more funding for behaviour change programs. With 88 bipartisan recommendations, this report is the most comprehensive and transformative piece of work ever done in this space and the government has told me that it will signiﬁcantly inform the development of its national plan against family violence. This exciting initiative captures realtime data to show us how we can plan by recording information about pedestrian and vehicle movement in the area. We’re also monitoring parking, with 20 car parking bay sensors installed so we can understand how many vehicles use the bays, how long they stay and peak times. There’s even a thermal image camera that provides information on temperature comparisons between asphalt, concrete, grass, canopy and shaded locations. HEALTH Anzac Day

AS a very proud ex-member of the ADF I am genuinely delighted that Anzac Day is back in its primary place. I thought the driveway commemorations were a terrific idea in 2020 considering the COVID conditions that were in place but it sure will be nice to go back to the Anzac services that we all know and love. Now, because Queenslanders have got our health response so right, we can see our service men and women marching again and honour them as they deserve while pausing to remember those who cannot march and will never march because they made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. Last week I attended a small but very respectful ceremony in Parliament House to honour the former MPs who served our nation in the Second World War. I was joined by other ex-service women and men from caucus and we learnt that 49 members of the Queensland Parliament served their country during WWII. A fitting ceremony in the lead up to Anzac Day. Let me take this opportunity say thank you to the men and women who have served and are serving, in peace and in war, at home and abroad. We cannot

THE University of the Sunshine Coast (USC) will soon begin a clinical trial of an investigational medication to treat stage III or IV melanoma in patients who have not previously been treated with PD-1 or PD-L1 inhibitors, a group of immune checkpoint inhibitors used as frontline treatment of multiple types of cancer. USC Clinical Trials will work closely with Dr Hong Shue of the Sunshine Coast Haematology and Oncology Clinic during the trial. “Australia has one of the highest rates of melanoma in the world, so we’re really pleased to be able to oﬀer this potential treatment to patients on the Sunshine Coast,” Dr Shue said. The trial will use current standard best practice treatment in addition to an experimental new medication that is hoped to improve the anti-tumour response in those who are initially resistant to standard treatments. The study will include a 28-day screening period, followed by up to 24 months or more of treatment, with follow-up phone calls every 12 weeks after the treatment period. Those aged 18 years or older who have medically diagnosed stage III or IV melanoma are invited to register their

interest in the study. Further criteria apply and will be discussed at an initial screening visit. • IF you had spring-flowering seedlings that didn’t survive the flooding rains, it’s not too late to plant Iceland poppies, pansies or snapdragons to fill in the gaps. • Grass growth will be starting to slow down but the weeds still grow. Keep on top of weeds, especially bindi-eye, clover and tropical chickweed. • Bare-rooted roses will be in stores now but don’t rush in and buy, as the optimum time is the end of next month (June). • Gingers and heliconias that have finished flowering, such as parrots beak heliconia, can be cut back now, leaving the new growth for next season’s flower display. • Apply a light dusting of lime to bare

It’s not too late to put some in if you haven’t already. • Dahlias that are dying back should be trimmed off while those that have not started to die back can be trimmed to half their height. Local Olympian heading to Tokyo MAPLETON-BASED Olympic archer Ryan Tyack is on track to clinch another spot on the world podium with the countdown to the Tokyo Olympics in July well under way. The 2016 Rio Olympics bronze medallist has secured a spot on the Australian archery team and has been training up to 45 hours a week for Tokyo, firing off an impressive 250-300 shots a day with Sunshine Coast Archery Club, located at Ballinger Park Sports Complex. Ryan first discovered archery at age 10, when his mother insisted he get off video games and try his hand at a sport. “I wanted to do archery or fencing because of the video game I played, so I nagged her, she rang the club and they had an open day that same day,” Ryan said. “I was terrible but I loved it. The first coach I had told my mum not to bother bringing me back saying I’d never be good and to just give up. “She didn’t tell me that but after five years I was able to win a Youth World Championship and I achieved that from doing it again and again and again, and working hard at it.” While he lived and trained at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra for four years, Ryan, 29, said he really enjoyed the facilities at Ballinger Park Sports Complex. “It doesn’t have the flashiest technology but it has a lot of things other clubs don’t,” he said.

Maleny Bowls Club

Contributed by Miles Allen IT was a huge fortnight at Maleny Bowls Club. We had 27 bowlers attend our recent skills training session with nine coaches from the Sunshine Coast coaching team. They took us through a series of different exercises testing and refining our skills. After the session we had a game and everyone played so much better and we ended the morning with a sausage sizzle. Tuesday, April 23 morning game saw Sandra Kapetanic and Relma Godfrey on fire and won both games convincingly to be the champions of the day. On Wednesday, April 21 night competition it was the grand final between RPT and the 3 Flamingos. RPT won 13-10. Congratulations to Tom Ukkola, Ray Ellmor and Paul Kemp. John Williams, Liz Williams and Trish Edwards played well for the Flamingos but just missed out. Full credit to both teams for a great game which had some wonderful ends to entertain the audience. Player of the match went to Trish for

sport The COVID-19 pandemic has interrupted athletes’ training preparations, including Ryan’s. “It’s been a really unique lead-up to the Tokyo Olympics but we’ve all had a chance to train longer together, which is great,” he said. “We were meant to go to Thailand in March, Guatemala in April and China in May but those plans were scrapped.” In the meantime, training itself is almost a full-time job for Ryan. “You do sacriﬁce a lot of time. My main day job was doing public speaking in schools but that slowed down slightly with COVID. “Any support would be very welcome,” he said. Sunshine Coast Archery Club is a not-for-proﬁt sports club dedicated to fostering all aspects of archery. Apparently, the Musketeers are reforming, getting a new coach and undertaking training. Other winners on the night were Mo’s Marauders who ﬁnished the season in 3rd position. Pegasus soundly beat Jam 18-5 and came 4th on the table. We continue this week with some slight variations to our normal game and the new season starts the following week. It was a beautiful afternoon on Friday, April 23 we had 17 players turn up for Scroungers, the winners were Mick Bulger, Don Ginns, Wendy Bulger and Relma Godfrey. Numerous chocolates were given away for touchers and maximum scores. As they say, there’s no rest for the wicked! We continue playing at least three times a week and our volunteers continue helping out around the club to ensure everyone, visitors and regulars enjoy themselves.

Alice Spittle, Wallace, Helen A and Lynette played for team two, with Kath, Miggy, Helen Uhlmann and Janelle playing for team one. Wallace beat Kath 14-8, Miggy beat Alice in a nail-biter 12–11, and Helen A and Lynette came home with a wet sail against Helen U and Janelle to win 11–4. This meant team two won the rubber 2-1 games. Sunshine Coast region held its association croquet championships. On Monday and Tuesday, April 19-20, Nick Cram, Donna and Ken played in the division two championships at Nambour. George Oliver from Coolum club won the event while Ken was runner up. Nick, Donna and Ken also played in the Mary Masters at Bribie, which was won by Wade Heart (Eildon). The Range hosted the division four championships with three of our players competing.
