What's On this weekend Night rides at Aussie World

I am beginning to feel like the Maleny Showgrounds pavilion is my second home on weekends as I have been there on four of the past six Saturdays. First it was the Maleny Show Ball, then, of course, the Maleny Show, Gardening on the Edge and last Saturday it was the Sustainable Lifestyles Expo organised by Maleny Commerce with funding from Sunshine Coast Council and Maleny Credit Union. So much work goes into organising all these individual events and it is always great to see just how much those attending enjoy them. The expo was a fantastic day, all about sharing, learning and the exchanging of ideas. And yes, of course there was great coffee and tasty food, including Maleny buffalo nachos on the menu. The driving force behind the expo was Nicole Hilton, president of Maleny Commerce and the business development officer at Maleny Credit Union, who did a truly amazing job to make the event happen. Thanks Nic for your enthusiasm and determination to bring great events together for the benefit of the rest of us. It is truly inspiring!

Cover Story Kenny’s Angels return By Sonia Clark After having a blast at their inaugural off-road adventure in last year’s Great Endeavour Rally, local team Kenny’s Angels is set to once again hit the open road and raise serious dust for dollars. Local ladies Amanda Smyth (Wild Horse Turf), Susan Ellwood (Grandview on Fraser) and Sonia Heilig (Go Turf) are looking forward to heading off road again and taking in the spectacular sights of the Gulf country – all for a “rally good cause”. Amanda said that last year the rally raised a total of $330,000 for the Endeavour Foundation to support people living with a disability. Once again she and her fellow angels aim to do the best job they can to support Endeavour. Each team must raise a minimum $3,300, so Amanda has put the call out for any local sponsors or people wishing to donate.

In handing down the $848 million budget for 2019/20 last week, Mayor Mark Jamieson said Sunshine Coast Council had maintained its focus on providing core services and investing in local infrastructure, while continuing to invest in region-shaping projects that would provide opportunities, employment and better access to services for residents into the future. “Once again, our council has delivered a budget which invests in and builds on what is most important –– our communities, our environment and natural assets and our economy. “Our communities are our future and this budget focuses on their needs – today, next year and well into the future,” Mr Jamieson said. But someone has to pay for those investments and that’s the Sunshine Coast ratepayers. Council rates and levies will go up by an average of 3% next financial year, adding to the financial strain felt by many local residents. The minimum rate rises by $36.20, residential waste by $8.60, environment levy up $2 to $44, heritage levy up 50 cents to $13 and the transport levy up $1 to $44. Commercial ratepayers are set to be stung by extra waste charges, with the Queensland Waste Levy also being added to the cost of rubbish collection from commercial premises. Some of the highlights of the $848 million budget include: • $225 million for roads and transport infrastructure and services; cycleways and pathways; stormwater assets; and public lighting

• $85 million for managing, maintaining and upgrading our parks and gardens, sporting venues, recreation parks, trails and facilities • $119 million for the operations and improvements to our community including venues, disaster management services, libraries, cemeteries and public health services • $174 million for our environment programs and services • $162 million for economic initiatives. Council will also continue with a range of initiatives to support community vitality and economic activity in local areas, including investing $763,000 in 2019/20 in the Nambour Heritage Tramway project; $2 million in the Landsborough Placemaking Master Plan project and $1 million to improve the Beerwah Aquatic Centre. Pensioners will also continue to receive the pensioner rebate, which equates to $3.7 million this year. “The council budget – the eighth consecutive budget that has delivered an operating surplus ($29.6 million in 2018/19) – puts us in an excellent financial position, enabling council to deliver a wide breadth of services to the community as well as invest in region-shaping projects, which will provide opportunities for the community today and well into the future,” Mayor Jamieson said. “After all, that is what a healthy, smart, creative region does.”

What the budget delivers for division 5

According to division 1 councillor Rick Baberowski, supporting our “community of communities” was at the heart of the latest Sunshine Coast Council budget. “Over the next 12 months, a greater focus has been placed on projects that enhance community health, confidence and connectivity from a very important streetscape upgrade to several park, road and recreation upgrades, just to name a few,” Cr Baberowski said. “With an increasingly diverse and growing community, these infrastructure upgrades will please many division 1 residents. “For example, there is a comprehensive upgrade planned for the district aquatic centre at Beerwah, including a new 17m indoor pool, street frontage and improved entryway. “A lot has happened in the past year in the Glass House Mountains District Park and more great things are planned including new pathway links, playground extension, park entry nodes and some eye-catching public art. “Perhaps one of the most strategically important projects is the Landsborough Placemaking Master Plan. “Major changes to the road and rail networks of this historic country town means council has been working with locals and visitors to design a new overall master plan and some very specific streetscape improvements to Cribb Street, Landsborough,” Cr Baberowski said. “Division 1 residents can also enjoy a continuation of the Healthy Sunshine Coast program, offering free and low cost fitness classes across the region.” Division 1 highlights from the budget include: • $2 million for the Landsborough Placemaking Master Plan project • $1.02 million to improve the Beerwah Aquatic Centre • $1.8 million for the next phase of the Roys Road upgrade • $850,000 for further upgrades to Glass House Mountains District Park • $300,000 for stages four and five at Turner Park, including a new playground and extra car parking • $350,000 to improve and expand the Glass House Mountains Regional Trail • $40,000 to design stage three of the Glenview Road upgrade

Sunshine Coast Council’s 2019/20 budget will deliver the sealing and upgrading of many council-controlled roads within division 5, ensuring they are safe for the community. Division 5 councillor Jenny McKay said having safe and sealed roads across towns within her division was a priority and would contribute to the vision for a healthy, smart, creative region. “Part of building a strong community means having a connected community, and we can ensure this by improving access, amenity and safety for our road users,” Cr McKay said. “There are several road upgrades planned for the division, including Winston Road South and Citrus Road in Palmwoods, McGilchrist Road in Eudlo, Obi Lane in Maleny, Christensens Road in Hunchy and Diamond Valley Road, Mooloolah. “While I’ll be three months short of seeing the proverbial ribbon cut on these projects with my retirement from council, I’m delighted that we got a few of these rural road upgrades into this budget. “It is my hope that we’ve provided a sound platform so that future councils can continue to support the rural communities through road upgrades.” Cr McKay said another division 5 budget highlight was the continued upgrade of the Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve. “We will also be renewing the much-loved track in this rainforest reserve, which is absolutely necessary as yearly visitation numbers increase substantially each year, last year reaching more than 105,000. “It’s important for people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities to access this wonderful community and environmental asset,” Cr McKay said. Division 5 highlights from the budget include: • $655,000 towards an adventure play area at the Russell Family Park Playground in Montville • $200,000 to upgrade Diamond Valley Road in Diamond Valley • $100,000 to the track renewal at Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve in Maleny • $35,000 to widen Obi Lane in Maleny

The 30th June Is Fast Approaching!

We are almost through another financial year and this means you need to think about the things you can do before June 30 for tax. 1. Work out if you made a profit - If you are in business, work out if your sales were more than your business expenses for the year. Remember that some payments like loan repayments and personal expenses don’t count. You need to look at the things that you paid for the business only (rent, advertising, bank interest, tools and materials) and work out the difference between sales and those expenses. 2. Find other expenses - Hopefully you have kept all your receipts so that you can maximise deductions. Think about travel costs, work specific clothing, training courses, union fees, trade magazines and other costs that are needed for your industry. 3. Make business purchases - The ATO has extended the instant asset write-off to $30,000 for small business owners. You can spend $30,000 on an asset you will use in your business (vehicle, computers, tools and machinery) and this will save tax. You can also put money into superannuation but this must be done before June 30 to get the deduction in this financial year! Lastly, your donations to registered charities may reduce tax. 4. Lodge on time - Individual returns must be lodged before October 31, 2019 unless you lodge through a tax agent. Company and trust returns have more time to lodge. 5. Avoid the ATO hit list - We are seeing lots of audits from the ATO for incorrect expense claims. The ATO now compares your income tax return to other people in your industry and follows up any large claims. On the hit list are: 1. Motor vehicle expenses 2. Accommodation and travel to work expenses 3. Excessive home office internet and telephone expenses 4. Laundry costs and dry cleaning 5. Investment property deductions

When Sarah met Nick When Maleny author Sarah Williams met Logienominated actor Myles Pollard at Maleny’s Milkin’ It for Charity earlier this year at Maleny Dairies she approached him about narrating her first audiobook. The star, best known for his role as Nick Ryan from the Australian TV drama ‘McLeod’s Daughters’, said he had been thinking about getting into narrating for a long time. “I really enjoy reading and I really enjoy reading aloud with my son, it's something I've had a passion for as a parent,” he said. Sarah’s book, ‘The Brothers of Brigadier Station’, is romantic fiction set predominantly on a cattle station in Julia Creek, western Queensland, so it was a return to the outback for Myles. Sarah said as soon as she heard his audition, she knew he was the perfect fit. “He breathed life into these characters and gave them all unique characteristics and qualities,” Sarah said. Neither Sarah nor Myles had recorded an audiobook before and without the backing of a traditional publishing house, Sarah was in charge of directing and managing the project.

Sarah flew to Perth, where Myles lives, and they spent a few days in a recording studio with a producer. Sarah spent a couple of weeks editing and mixing the files before uploading them to audiobook retailers like Audible, Apple and Google. The audiobook is currently a bestseller in the US and Australia and Myles has agreed to record the next two books in the ‘Brigadier Station’ series later in the year. The pair have since announced a series of Queensland events they will attend together in September including library visits and workshops on creating audiobooks at the Queensland Writers Centre on September 27. Business News Milestone celebration

A major celebratory event is planned for this Friday for the Maleny Visitor Information Centre’s (MVIC) 25th birthday at the Maleny Community Centre. However, Maleny Commerce took an early opportunity to mark the important milestone and the wonderful service that the volunteer group provides the local community at the recent chamber breakfast held at Tranquil Park. Four members of the MVIC executive committee attended the breakfast, delivering an informative presentation about the role they play, how they operate and the range of services they provide the broader community.

The day provided an opportunity to share knowledge, experience and understanding across the full spectrum of health, wealth and lifestyle. There was a comprehensive speakers schedule that covered topics about personal change you can be involved in by embracing native plants, recycling, making beeswax food covers, using natural alternatives to chemicals right through to council’s current work on its nomination for the Sunshine Coast to be recognised as a UNESCO biosphere.

Dr Sonia Marshall, council’s strategic policy officer, environment and sustainability, talked to the group about how the council was proposing a nomination for the whole local government area to be recognised as an international site of excellence, known as a biosphere, which translates to an area of natural beauty where people live and work. Dr Marshall said becoming a biosphere would enhance the Sunshine Coast’s national and international reputation while recognising and preserving our outstanding community, environmental and economic assets for current and future generations. This year’s Knitfest program on Saturday and Sunday, July 6-7, includes 27 fabulous fibre art workshops with presenters coming from all over South East Queensland and include eco and indigo dyeing, wet and needle felting, basket weaving, macramé, extreme knitting and crochet. The workshops are filling fast so don't leave it until the last minute to book online. New home needed for furniture

Pattemore House jams on show

The Maleny Bowls Club is currently upgrading its clubhouse including replacing clubroom furniture. The club recently received $4,400 from a Sunshine Coast Council grant to assist with the $7,500 required to complete the purchase of new tables and chairs. The club appreciates the support from council and is now keen to raise the additional funds to finance the shortfall. In the spirit of sharing their good fortune around they have decided to sell the current furniture that, while no longer suitable for their needs, may be useful for another club or community group and in turn will assist in their fundraising efforts. They have 25 tables that are 740mm x 740mm with laminated top and timber edging and 37 chairs. The club’s board has decided to make the furniture available for sale by tender, which will close on Friday, July 6. The quality of their produce was displayed and judged at the local Maleny Agricultural Show – as it still is today. At the 1932 Maleny Show, the Pattemore family won prizes in the following categories: Rhubarb, squashes, jam oranges, valencia oranges – JR Pattemore Pickles, orange marmalade, cape gooseberry jam, chutney – Mrs Stan Pattemore Carrots, broad beans – Stan Pattemore Fodder (mixed chaff) – Stan and Gilbert Pattemore Heaviest potatoes – Gilbert Pattemore The Friends of Pattemore House have continued the tradition, winning the prize for best cumquat jam at the 2018 Maleny Show and at this year’s show, the coveted best rosella jam! Community Groups VIEW Club party time

Contributed by Janet Kitchin The Glasshouse Country VIEW Club celebrated its 16th birthday last week at a party with the theme ‘A view around the world’, which was a fun filled day for our ladies and their guests. Much effort was put into the outfits worn on the day and each table was decorated to represent a different country. There were games, competitions, raffles, trading tables filled with homemade produce and a buffet lunch. Our next outing will be on July 3 when we will meet at a member’s home at 10am for morning tea followed by a movie and soup. Anyone interested in joining us would be most welcome. Quilters’ special project

The Mooloolah Valley Quilting and Craft Group has been hard at work over the past several months making a wonderful quilt for Glasshouse Views Aged Care (McKenzie Aged Care Group). Residents, staff, volunteers and management were thrilled with the presentation of this beautiful quilt to the home. The quilt is a landscape, representing elements from the local Beerwah environment – the rivers and creeks, mountains and farmland. There is beautiful detail in the work, which residents took delight in examining, appreciating the hours of effort and tremendous skill evident in the quilt. Facility manager Liz Oss-Emer was presented with the quilt at a recent morning tea. “When a member of our community passes, we honour them with a special ceremony and this quilt will be a part of that ceremony,” she said. The Mooloolah Valley Quilting and Craft Group meets weekly to work on their various individual and group projects and each year they choose a special project to work on.

Repair work needed

Residents and visitors to the Maleny area connected by Obi Lane have admiration for the scenery and facilities. It has taken plenty of time and enthusiasm by those associated with the golf club and the other places of interest to create them, as we enjoy them now. Yet the part of Obi Lane that carries ever increasing traffic is only single lane with disintegrating bitumen and muddy sides. Drivers passing or facing other vehicles are forced to drive on the muddy side or gravel deposited there by council short-cutting their road repairs. This situation is dangerous for drivers and an increasing number of area-loving walkers. Is there council staff responsible for organising the repair of this road before an accident happens? Milos Frohlich Maleny Ed’s note: Cr Jenny McKay has advised that in the 2019/20 Sunshine Coast Council budget an allocation of $35,000 has been made to make repairs to and widen Obi Lane.

I want to update all the people that I mentioned my idea for a dinosaur and fantasy playground at Beerwah’s Turner Park, and thank the shops that had the petition and the people who signed it. I had a call from Sunshine Coast Council saying they did not give me permission to go ahead and try to get it in. I did not even ask for any money as our federal member Andrew Wallace had said he would look into it for me if the council allowed it. They said that they had other things on the cards and did I know that the area flooded. They said that they were looking at putting in a kick and play area and more picnic facilities. I wonder what the floods will do to them. I had been asked by a lady about exercise machines, so I asked council about that and they said they were already looking into it.

Re: Child criminals

First of all, I would like to thank Brian Stallworthy for his 30 years’ service to the community, though I must protest his view regarding "child criminals". There are no bad seeds only bad parents and a dysfunctional society that demonstrates through popular culture/media that so called ‘real power’ comes from a gun. He recounts his experiences of a nine-year-old child who acted like a "crazed animal". Maybe he too was trapped? He also states that these children don’t care about themselves maybe because all their lives they have been falsely shown they are worthless and it is the world of adults that constantly reinforces this falsehood (as it was for me as a child) till trust of adults and respect for their property was close to zero and they were the enemy. The adults of this society need to stop feeling sorry for themselves and start taking responsibility for the problems they create regarding child criminals. Jesus said that we should suffer little children, which means to put up with and nurture them not to make them suffer as is so often misinterpreted. He also said to turn the other cheek when someone smites you. I have been doing this all my adult life as I learned that vengeance is a two-way street best not travelled. It’s not rocket science but it is social science. We have become a society that worships technology but if we don’t start embracing ‘peopleology’ then all the techno marvels of the world won’t save us. It is said that the mark of a noble society is how it treats its children, elderly and animals. Our society seems to be failing on all counts. Name supplied Conondale

Time to deliver

Looking back over the past decade it’s incredible how the coast has grown and changed. In ten years, new suburbs have been created with developments coming online at Birtinya, Brightwater, Aura and Palmview to name a few. Major shopping centre upgrades have been planned, built and opened in Kawana Waters and Sunshine Plaza. Sadly, one of the things that hasn’t changed is Annastacia Palaszczuk’s empty promises to duplicate the Sunshine Coast rail line. Under the bad old days of the Bligh Labor government Annastacia Palaszczuk promised to duplicate the rail line as Transport Minister in 2009. Fast forward ten years and while her title may have changed, she is still making the same empty promises. For a decade Annastacia Palaszczuk has been squabbling over the funding toss with federal Labor and Coalition governments. Irrespective of what’s been offered by the federal government, the reality is this Palaszczuk Labor government is more interested in playing petty politics than busting congestion. I can guarantee that the cost of congestion from not duplicating the rail line would have far outweighed the amount of funding her government continues to squabble over. Instead of playing petty schoolyard politics over funding deals, a Frecklington LNP government would match the federal government’s funding and immediately start construction. This is a shovel-ready project. It’s time to get on and finally deliver the Sunshine Coast rail duplication. Andrew Powell Member for Glass House

Living - Arts Not your granny’s mats

One of the exhibitions on show at the Queensland Winter Craft Festival currently under way at the Kingaroy Art Gallery, is the work of local Landsborough artisan, Judi Tompkins. Judi, a member of the Australian Rugmakers Guild and the International Guild of Handhooking Rugmakers, has created an exhibition of 25 pieces that incorporates the skills of what she describes as the “lost” craft of Australian rug making combined with the disciplines of pottery, taxidermy, jewellery, music and textiles, relying on techniques from these varied disciplines to create 2D/3D works. Judi said her fibre/textile works paid respect to the tradition of rug hooking while at the same time pushing the boundaries by using unconventional fibres, framing, designs, embellishments and “odd things” to produce installations, wall art and interactive art pieces. “My goal is to create pieces that have an element of whimsy, illustrate a ‘fibre pun’ or challenge the viewer to move beyond the point of merely thinking outside the box to a point where they do not see the box in the first place,” Judi said. One of the pieces entitled ‘Koi Pond: A portable water feature’ (pictured) has a white brocade covered tray as a pond containing three koi fish surrounded by water lilies and silk flowers. The series of stepping stones, which glow softly in the dark when exposed to even indirect light, leads the viewer’s eye across the pond without getting wet!

On the rock pile at one end of the pond stands a stone obelisk with a carved flower. Judi Tompkins A lizard can be seen creeping among the water lilies on the puddle some distance away from the main pond. Scattered nearby are additional stacks of glowing stones representing more water with lily pads that glow softly in the dark. Judi’s inspiration draws from the natural environment, science and literature as they are influenced by design, sculpture, architecture and people who perceive the world differently. “Having an opportunity to exhibit within a regional art gallery like Kingaroy has not only given me an opportunity to sell some work but has also offers a venue where it is easier to engage with visitors who are often intimidated to ask questions of artists in large venues,” Judi said. Under Eights Day at Peachester State School was a day to celebrate the diversity of language and for some of the school’s younger children to welcome their multi-lingual mums to school and to demonstrate their own knowledge of their families’ languages. Four of the most important words in the world are hello, goodbye, thank you and love and they were introduced by Lileana and Ella and their mum Innessa in Russian, Sakura and her mum Keiko in Japanese and Celine and her mum Jen in Cantonese. The morning then proceeded with loads of fun and games such as building, outdoor play, box construction, face painting, fairy bread making and tasting, and craft activities. It was great to welcome grandparents, younger siblings and future students to the school. The morning concluded with some Russian singing and the Russian stream dance. Celine, Jen, Sakura, Keiko, Lileana, Innessa and Ella

Uncle Alan had such a wonderful presence and a captive audience as he shared a Dreamtime story with the children of Beerwah Kindy recently, encouraging respectful and positive discussions around inclusion and diversity. The Kindy friends were especially excited to see Uncle Alan’s yarning stick that has travelled all over the world with him to various ceremonies. Uncle Alan also spent time painting and yarning with the group. What a wonderful connection the Kindy has made and they look forward to future visits from him.

Hands-on fun for budding green thumbs

There will be plenty of hands-on fun for kids these school holidays at the Queensland Garden Expo to be held at the Nambour Showgrounds from July 12–14. Kids aged 15 and under get free entry to the expo. With a large variety of free activities scheduled across the three days of the show, kids will certainly be kept amused. Event manager Marion Beazley said that in addition to show favourites such as the kids’ garden patch, giant playground and a range of engaging presentations on many of the eight stages, there will be a new addition to the expo just for kids. “We’re excited to be offering make your own mini fairy garden or ninja garden workshops on our Saturday and Sunday program this year and we’re sure the kids will love it,” Ms Beazley said. “'These workshops are free, so head up to the kids’ area on arrival to grab a lanyard as we're expecting spots to fill fast! “Of course, our popular free giant playground will once again be part of the expo, so kids can enjoy the giant slide, jumping pillow and merry-go-round.” Kids aged six and over can join in the fun of making their own terrarium at the Scotts Osmocote site, while kids of all ages can get crafty with plenty of gardenthemed craft in the kids’ area, as well as the Bli Bli State School courage garden. With nearly 20 years’ childcare experience, Keosha has most recently spent four and half years at a North Brisbane childcare centre and is looking forward to getting back into the logistics of centre management. “The team here are great and seem excited for change,” Keosha said. “I’m really looking forward to extending the warm and inviting, homely environment here at the centre and I’m excited to be developing new learning opportunities to expand our great services and programs. “Learning engagement, healthy eating habits, education and quality childcare will continue to be a key focus.” Keosha is also committed to continuing the centre’s long-term sustainability focus, with plans for a centre orchard and revitalised vegetable garden. “Healthy eating choices form an important part of our core centre values. From the churches Throughout the world Christian churches have focussed their attention on biblically major events. These were Easter when the crucified and risen Lord Jesus was celebrated. Forty days after Easter Sunday, we watched on as we reflected on the Ascension of Jesus. He physically left his disciples and ascended to Heaven to be with God the Father. But not to be left alone, God sent his Holy Spirit at Pentecost to be with God’s people forever. Pentecost simply means 50, and so ten days after the Ascension the church on Earth is granted the Holy Spirit who will come and work in the hearts and lives of God’s people. The Old Testament parallel is the Festival of the Harvest, 50 days after the harvest was completed. The prophet Joel in the Old Testament spoke of the coming of the Holy Spirit. While that first Pentecost day was dramatic with flames settling on the disciples’ heads and people of different languages fully understanding one another, the Holy Spirit continues His work in the lives of Christians. He works at bringing people to faith in Jesus. Through God’s word and the sacraments of baptism and Holy Communion, the

Health &Beauty Poor oral health may be linked to a range of other diseases For many years people have thought of their mouth as separate to rest of their body. However, there is a growing body of evidence that suggests a connection between oral health and whole-body health. Dr Stephen Daniels from Beerwah Dental has been serving the local community for more than Dr Stephen Daniels 20 years. Dr Daniels said that everything in our bodies had an impact on our overall health. He cites a recently published white paper from Dental Health Services Victoria that has linked major health issues with gum disease and tooth decay. “There is a growing body of evidence and research into the connections between poor oral health and other diseases such as diabetes and cardiac

conditions. A healthy mouth should be considered an important part of an overall holistic health strategy,” Dr Daniels said. Ailments such as diabetes, stroke, kidney disease, dementia, adverse pregnancy outcomes, obesity and, of course, oral cancer have been linked to poor oral health. Dr Daniels explained that visiting your local dentist is much more than just having a “lovely clean teeth feeling” - it is also an important investment in your overall health. “We are open six days a week and a comprehensive examination and clean, including x-rays (if you need them), is only $149. Also, if you are part of an approved health fund there is no gap payment. We often find that people get busy and feel that if they are not in pain then they don’t need regular six-month check-ups but current research suggests that more attention should be given to the significance of oral health as part of a broader holistic outlook,” he said. Queenslanders are encouraged to go dry this July by giving up alcohol for the month to raise funds for the Cancer Council’s 13 11 20 support service. Cancer Council Queensland CEO Ms Chris McMillan said that by registering for Dry July and selecting Cancer Council as a beneficiary, participants will be helping to ensure that no one faces cancer alone. By calling 13 11 20, anyone affected by cancer can speak to a health professional about anything to do with cancer. Ms McMillan said the other benefit of taking part in Dry July was reducing your cancer risk. “We know that alcohol is a cause of cancer. • Prune passionfruit vines of unwanted growth, mulch and water well. Prune the vine by cutting all laterals (shoots coming from the main stem) back to two buds. • Top up the mulch around fruit trees. Clean out your compost bin, spread the contents under your fruit trees and start another. • Feed your strawberries with Organic Extra. Also use fish and kelp regularly to keep them in good health and to prevent fruit rot. Keep plants well watered but try not to wet the berries. Mulch plants so the berries don’t lie on the soil. One of the best mulches is pine needles. • Lift dahlia tubers and store in sawdust. Break up clumps of day lily, chives or shallots and replant. • Reduce watering of house plants. • Carry out heavy construction jobs (paving, pergolas, walls and steps) while it is cool. • Winter pruning (roses should not be pruned before July): a) Old fashioned roses only need unsightly and dead branches removed in winter. b) Climbers need to be pruned after they flower in spring. c) Modern bush and standard roses are pruned fairly hard each July. Cut the water suckers to the ground (shooting from below the union). • Treat your lawn for bindii as soon as it appears. Any of the broadleaf lawn herbicides that kill bindii and clover will do. • Pruning acalyphas now will ensure that they have great flushes of colourful new foliage next spring. Witta Tennis Contributed by Pauline Fraley Whistlers played at Witta against Maroochydore Phoenix. Nice weather with a bit of wind but we had the wind work for us. We had good rallies as usual and got points at the right time. It was a good match to finish the season. Score was 48-14 games, 8-0 sets. Team was Paula Cudmore, Brenda Warner, Donna Kuskopf and Aki Lepper. We came third but very close to the second. Well done team! The Wildcats travelled to Nambour to play against the No Faults for the last game this season. Michelle Macaree, Jenie Riding, Sonia Douglas and Libby Howlett enjoyed some great

tennis and long rallies. The No Faults were just a little too strong this time winning by seven games. We ended up four points behind the division winners, which just happened to be the No Faults. Thursday, June 20: The ladies played in a Windaroo ladies day in an 18-hole single stableford competition with first place going to Mo Lawrence with 41 points, runner up Seri Tytherleigh 37 points on a count back from local lady Charley Conradi, also with 37 points and third to Lindy Armsden from Royal Queensland Golf Club, also on a count back from Debby Helfrich (another Windaroo player), both with 35 points. NTPs: 5 and 13 - Lindy Armsden and 8 Ineke Diversi. It is so inspiring to see the Maleny ladies playing away and still coming in with two of them playing so well. Sport Easy Find Classifieds The Range Croquet Club Contributed by Ken Barker There was good play on both lawns on Thursday. On lawn one Wallace Roy and Bev Sockhill played two games of golf croquet with no scores recorded. On lawn two Ken Barker and Vince Carbery played a game of association croquet with Ken winning a topsy-turvy game 26–6. The Caloundra group visited on Friday and several games of golf croquet were played on three half courts. On Saturday there was a training game in association croquet where Sarah Widin and Ken drew with Wallace and Vince eight all. Wallace, Sarah, Bev, Sally Adams and Stuart Craig went to a golf training session at Nambour and came away enlightened as to the intricacies of the game. Donna Manning and Vince went as well in referee and coaching capacities. Sunday saw another game of association doubles. Initially Kath Smith paired up to play Wallace and Ken, but when they left Kath and Donna finished what had been a scratchy game, which ended with a score of 10–9.
