on the Cover
After 15 years doing this job, it isn’t often I do something for the first time. However, this week I reckon I can be confident in saying that this is the first time we have used an underwater photograph on our front cover. In the final edition of 2019 we included a story about the opening of the hydrotherapy pool at Beerwah Aquatic Centre. As part of this project, the centre also received an impressive facelift for the Roberts Road façade and refurbished amenities. What we didn’t detail in the story was what some of the refurbishments entailed. One element of the work is the beautiful photographic images that have been added to the walls in the change rooms. The photos just so happened to be taken by a talented Landsborough local, Justin Bruhn from Pure Underwater Imaging. I reckon that as a keen diver, photographer, artist and marine conservationist, he has what many people would consider a dream job. Not too many of us would get up close and personal with a great white shark in our daily work. In this edition we caught up with Justin to find out a bit more about his work, particularly his part in this Sunshine Coast Council Regards, project.

Local News Big awards for local theatre makers Three Maleny theatre makers received accolades for 'A Girl’s Guide to World War' at the Matilda Awards ceremony at the Brisbane Powerhouse on Monday, February 17. The writers of the show, Katy Forde and Aleathea Monsour, won the big award of the night - the Lord Mayor’s Award for Best New Australian Work. Actor Susie French took out Best Female Actor in a Supporting Role for her compelling and unforgettable performance as Dr Lilian Cooper in the show. Winning the Lord Mayor’s Award came as a huge shock to both Katy and Aleathea. Katy said they did not expect to win as the other nominees in the category had done wonderful work, all of which told important Australian stories. “For us, simply being nominated was a huge honour,” she said. The major award was the last one of the evening and was announced by Brisbane Deputy Mayor Krista Adams. Aleathea said they were so surprised when their names were called out that they didn’t respond straight away. "A friend sitting next to me had to push me out of my seat before I could start moving," she said. ‘A Girl’s Guide to World War’ played in various Sunshine Coast venues in 2018 and 2019, including performances in Maleny in November presented by the Maleny Arts Council. With the award, Katy and Aleathea are now committed to bringing the show to Brisbane.

Maleny’s Australian Film Festival, to be held from Friday, March 13 to Sunday, March 15, is a showcase of the way Australia’s stories are currently portrayed in cinema. Festival organiser Andrew Wallace said that whether a film was fictional or a documentary was a bit beside the point, as the films dealt with our concerns or informed us about Australians who have led unusual lives. Some of these examples include an Aboriginal girl in a country town who befriends an emu and gets into trouble by stealing food for it, finding herself caught between conflicting cultural norms in 'Emu Runner'. In 'Slam' a feisty competitor in a slam poetry contest goes missing. She is Middle Eastern. Has she become an Islamic radical? In his eulogy for one of Australia’s most gifted pianists, Paul Keating lambasted the way he was mistreated. 'The Eulogy' looks at whether it was quite so simple. After an atrocity in colonial Tasmania a young convict woman joins forces with an Aboriginal man to seek revenge in 'The Nightingale'. 'H is for Happiness' is about a plucky girl who ponders the complication and misery of the lives around her and is determined to do something about it.
"All the films, in one way or another, are about coming to terms with life in present-day Australia, even if that includes acknowledging our violent past or looking for ways to cope with a worrying future," Andrew said. They are issues also addressed in novels, television, the news media and even visual art. Andrew said that we may or may not agree with the take on Australian life depicted by any particular film-maker but it was stimulating to see a range of films within a single weekend and reflect on what they have to say. "It’s also stimulating to share our responses with others and, as always, the Maleny Film Festival facilitates this," he said. The Sunday morning session Our Stories, Our Films will involve both informal and more structured discussion about the films, as well as activities to enhance appreciation of what goes into the making of a film. Tickets can be purchased for individual films, for the Friday night film and lunch party, in a three pack or a seven pack, which covers all films plus the launch party, so there is sure to be something to suit your needs. Sewing bee gets hall buzzing When wildlife lovers Bekky Hoge (Landsborough - Love Where We Live) and Debbie Ives (Beerwah CWA) recently teamed up to host a sewing bee to make much-needed kangaroo car carry bags and covers for wildlife rescue baskets they were completely overwhelmed by the support they received. Bekky said she and Debbie had felt really upset and helpless about the effect of bush fires on wildlife, so she contacted Sunshine Coast Wildlife Rescue Organisation (WILVOS) and discovered there were a number of items their carers really needed. “QCWA Beerwah generously offered their hall to host a sewing bee, so all we needed were some

enthusiastic cutters, ironers and sewers,” she said. The response on the day was incredible with women coming from as far away as Brisbane, many carrying sewing machines and arm loads of fabric. The hall quickly filled up and they had to set up cutting stations outside. Bekky said the level of determination to help was inspiring. One woman said she didn't "care what I do, just give me a job and I’ll do it. I just want to help". Women cut pattern pieces, ironed and sewed non-stop for as much as five hours. When morning tea was announced, nobody moved and they had to encourage people to stop working to have a cup of tea and cake. Several women even asked for patterns to take home so they could sew more items. This request saw two enthusiastic women go and buy paper and cardboard and spend hours tracing takehome patterns. Bekky reckons by the end of the morning, they were exhausted but also inspired by the community’s heart-warming desire to help. WILVOS has almost 100 carers on its books so there is a significant demand for the hand-made items. Given the success of the first WILVOS sewing bee, they plan to host another event in early April. Currently they are looking at options for a bigger

Alison Barry-Jones Candidate for Division 5 A late entry in the battle to represent Division 5 in the next Sunshine Coast Council is Alison Barry-Jones, who says she is excited to be running for public office again. Alison has previously served as Mayor and a councillor under the former Maroochy Shire. Alison said that as a Division 5 resident, her number one priority would be to preserve and protect the region. "As your representative, I will work closely with you so that our community has a strong voice in council. Harnessing our collective intelligence, ensuring this piece of the world is preserved and enriched by the decisions we make, is critical if we are to retain the magnificent lifestyle we have all come here to share and enjoy," she said. As a trained school teacher, Alison described herself as "a solid down-to-earth family woman" who has raised her four children in the area. "Operating a guest house on Towen Mountain Road, I spent a lot of time bringing visitors to enjoy the many scenic shopping and dining delights the range has to offer. I more recently enjoyed selling my natural home-made products at the Maleny markets," she said. "My extensive list of achievements on the Sunshine Coast, including the founding of our university, proves that I am a person who gets things done. "I have represented the hinterland as director and chair of the Sunshine Coast Tourism Board, supported the development of the Blackall Range Independent School, spearheaded the establishment of the first TAFE College on the Sunshine Coast (in Nambour), along with the arts incubator, and fought to save the Sunshine Coast Animal Refuge in Sippy
Creek from closure. "I was also instrumental in introducing the environment levy, which contributes $10 million directly to the purchase, protection and enhancement of our natural environment. "I am committed to the enforcement of environmental degradation laws, the reduction of urban sprawl across the hinterland and disaster management strategies for the future. "I support and encourage agriculture, cottage industries, tourism, small business and developing clean high-tech and other industries." Massive bushfire relief concert Get ready for some seriously star-studded performances at the Massive Maleny Bushfire Relief Benefit Concert on Saturday, March 7 at the Maleny RSL. Event organiser Linsey Pollak said the evening would feature performances from 11 outstanding local and Brisbane-based artists donating their time and talent, including Andrea Kirwin, Hayden Hack, Lizzie O'Keefe, Louise King, Rob Longstaff, Shenzo Gregorio and Tjupurru, Efiq & Kitch. “Although the bush fires are momentarily off the front pages, the need for ongoing support to provide necessary relief for people, fauna and flora affected by the fires is as great as ever,” Linsey said. Hoping to raise up to $10,000, Linsey said admission to the concert, or mini-festival, would be $50 and people would be able to choose one of three funds to support on the night - the Maleny Rural Fire Brigade, the WWF Australia wildlife and nature recovery fund or the Red Cross disaster relief and recovery fund. “People will be able to put their donation straight into one of the three nominated charity boxes when they arrive. However, there will be no pre-sales so make sure you get in early as this will be a popular event,” Linsey said. The night will kick off at 6.30pm with the fabulous Nadia Šunde as MC. The Maleny RSL has agreed to generously provide the venue, staging and lights for free and the event is shaping up to be a not to be missed charity fundraiser with some of the best in local talent. “All over the country, Australian musicians have come together to raise muchneeded funds for ongoing relief efforts. Music communities have been putting in their time, resources, talent and love to help our hardworking firies, fire-affected communities and injured native wildlife, and here in Maleny we are thrilled that local musicians are creating their own incredible benefit concert,” Linsey said.

Business News Beerwah café closed
The Fat Frenchman patisserie and café on Turner Street in Beerwah will be closed until further notice, according to a sign that appeared on the front door last Thursday. Owner Lyndon Wittingslow faced the Maroochydore Magistrates Court last Wednesday on charges of alleged domestic violence, including one of choking, suffocation or strangulation, committed against a female with whom he was alleged to be having a relationship. Bail was refused and Mr Wittingslow was remanded in custody to reappear in court on April 3. Shannon Greenwood, owner of Hinterland Body and Soul co-located within the café, wants to assure her clients that she is definitely open for business as usual. Hinterland Body and Soul can still be accessed through the existing café entrance door as normal. Shannon had earlier made the decision to move her business into bigger premises and has recently been busy getting the premises set up, just around the corner in Peachester Road next door to Subway. “It’s an exciting time for us and a great change for our clients. The space is larger, which means we can reorganise our treatment spaces and, with ample parking just behind, clients will find improved access as well,” she said.
Time to show we care
By Lea Parkes National media have recently been reporting about Chinese restaurants in Australia seeing significant drops in business due to unfounded public fears over the coronavirus (COVID-19). While in this region we might be far from the big city with their dedicated Chinatown precincts, it seems the impact is also being felt in our community. Last week we were contacted by Aaron Peckitt, from First National Real Estate in Beerwah, who was shocked to learn from Jocelyn Lo Caldwell, the Australian-born, long-term owner of the Pineapple Patch on Steve Irwin Way at Glass House Mountains, that her business had taken a significant hit since the coronavirus outbreak was announced in January. Aaron said Jocelyn was more local and Australian than most of us but it was not just her business that had been affected. In our own community she has been on the receiving end of racial abuse because of her Asian ancestry and seemingly due to people’s ignorant fears about the coronavirus. “I just thought it would be good for us as a community to get together to support Jocelyn and show her we care,” Aaron said. I caught up with Jocelyn last week for a chat and she explained that the Pineapple Patch was opened by her dad more than 30 years ago, and
had been continuously owned by a member of her extended family since then. She took over the business in 2003. And there aren’t too many other local businesses that can make that claim. Jocelyn says that while she understands that it is fear and ignorance around the facts surrounding coronavirus, she is finding it difficult to understand why her customers would be concerned about her and her business. As a small business owner/operator with four young children, Jocelyn explained that no members of her family had travelled to China recently and she hasn’t even had time away from the business to drive to the coast, let alone travel further afield. However, what Jocelyn has been most troubled by is hearing the snide comments made by locals in the bank and in the supermarket about being Asian. This is not something she has experienced before in our community and nor does she – or anyone – deserve to be targeted in this way. Over the years when bad things happen to individuals in our community, our response is to rally around them. This has always been the Australian thing to do. Let’s not let fear and ignorance win out. By Sonia Clark If you have been to the Beerwah Aquatic Centre recently you may have seen the stunning underwater photographs by Landsborough photographer Justin Bruhn from Pure Underwater Imaging. A keen diver, photographer, artist and marine conservationist, we caught up with Justin to find out a little more about his background and his work. Q: How long have you now lived on the Coast? A: I’ve been based on the beautiful Sunshine Coast since the early 2000s. Q: What led you to become an underwater photographer? A: My appreciation and love of the ocean and the amazing creatures that live within it evolved from working as a dive instructor in North Queensland. I was also taking photo and video footage for dive boat companies and during this time I fell in love with the magnificence of the Great Barrier Reef. Through photography I realised I could help raise awareness of the fragility of our oceans, and was deeply inspired to protect the health of this natural wonder, which led me to partner with the Australian Marine Conservation Society. My career as an underwater photographer was cemented in 2013 when my work was featured at the prestigious David Hart Galleries. I was humbled by the support as this was first time in the gallery’s history that photography was featured. Q: What do you love about your work? A: I’m on a mission to share the mystery of the ocean and the vulnerability of the creatures that call it home. I love being able to try to capture the magic of the underwater world and to celebrate our incredible marine life. The chance to create and to inspire people to connect with the ocean experience is awesome. Being able to raise awareness of our endangered and vulnerable marine life with my images is a privilege. locations is great too! Q: How did you feel about your photographic work being commissioned as part of the Beerwah Aquatic Centre upgrade? A: It was an honour to be commissioned by the Sunshine Coast Council to supply artwork for the recent Beerwah Aquatic Centre refurbishment. It’s been a great feeling for me to know that many young people coming to the aquatic centre to train will see these images on the walls and hopefully be inspired to learn more about these magnificent marine creatures and contribute in some way to their protection in future. Q: Why did you choose the particular images on display at the aquatic centre? A: My focus is to raise awareness for our vulnerable marine life. With this in mind I was invited to showcase images of the endangered green turtle and humpback whales, with both species iconic to the Sunshine Coast as well as the eastern seaboard of Australia. Both green turtle images are from my Open Edition collection captured during trips to Lady Elliot Island and the southern Great Barrier Reef. The humpback whale images were captured near Tonga in the South Pacific. Q: Where in Queensland inspires you? A: I appreciate visiting the area around Lady Elliot Island and Wolf Rock near Rainbow Beach is stunning. Closer to home, one of my favourite places to be is Kondalilla Falls. It’s just a beautiful place to meditate and be bathed in natural surroundings. I go there when I want to get close to nature locally. Q: What are your future plans? A: I’d love to eventually establish a gallery here on the Coast. Currently I feature my work at local markets such as Eumundi, and online at www.pureunderwaterimaging.com. World Day of Prayer
World Day of Prayer (WDP) will be held on Friday, March 6, with this year's order of service compiled by the WDP committee in Zimbabwe. All interested community members are invited to attend one of the locally hosted services at the Seventh-day Adventist Church, Landsborough or the Maleny Catholic Church, 43 Cedar Road, Maleny from 9.30am. In 2020 the theme is ‘Rise! Take your mat and walk!’ and attendees are invited to come together in one global theme of prayer, meet with others and gain insight into learning about a different country. Following the service, guests are invited to stay and enjoy a fellowship morning tea and refreshments. An international ecumenical Christian initiative led by women, the WDP is run under the motto ‘Informed prayer and prayerful action’. Local services will explore the 2020 theme and invite attendees to take steps for personal and social transformation and act in love for peace and reconciliation. The WDP is celebrated every year in more than 170 countries on the first Friday in March, and

St George’s in the-Hills concerts Small group concert lovers are delighted the St George’s in the Hills concert series will start again soon, with the first concert for 2020 to be held in the church at 2 Walker Drive, Maleny on Sunday March 8 at 2pm. It will feature the ever-popular Kim Kirkman tenor, violinist and harpist - with a new program of musical favourites and one item with a contemporary theme that will have its world premiere on the day. Kim wrote the new song, 'Cherish the Earth', with local writer Patricia Roche as an "outpouring of love" for the planet. “Sometimes love is the most effective vehicle for change and we are really happy with this song that speaks of the beauty of the Earth and what we see around us”, he said. Priest-in-charge of St George's, Rev Jeanette Jamieson, said she was delighted that Kim was starting the new series as he was popular with their regular audience. “I am excited to be able to hear his new song
on a topical theme, and our regulars will love the rest of the program that will include some musical favourites for voice, harp and violin," Rev Jeanette said. “It is remarkable that in Maleny we have an artist of such outstanding ability who is patently musically joyful and prepared to share it so generously with us all,” she said. The 2020 St George’s concert series will also include a jazz concert with trio and quartet on Saturday, June 6, a concert of harps on September 6 and the traditional Christmas celebration on November 28. Zonta seeks young women for award The Young Women in Public Affairs Award (YWPA) is an initiative of the worldwide organisation for empowering women, Zonta International, and the search for ten international winners starts with a local club targeting young women aged 16–19 years. Zonta Club of Blackall Range scholarships committee chair, Linda McElrea, said the club was encouraging young women based on the range to apply for this prestigious award. “The club gives a prize of $500 to the local winner, whose application then proceeds to our district organisation where the successful candidate receives US$1,400 (about A$2,000). From there the competition is worldwide and Zonta International gives ten awards valued at US$4,000 (about A$6,000) each. “However, the major advantage in applying for YWPA is for the experience it gives to a young woman to put her ideas together, tell us her experience as a community volunteer and speak to her application to our club members,” Linda said. According to Zonta International criteria, the goal of the award is "to encourage young women to participate in public affairs by recognising a commitment to the volunteer sector". Candidates need to provide evidence of volunteer leadership achievements and a dedication to empowering women worldwide through service and advocacy. Linda said candidates could have volunteering experience in local government, student government or workplace leadership. “They need to have researched the programs of Zonta International and show support for its

The Rotary Club of Maleny has been enlisted to assist and fully supports the formation of a youth committee in Maleny. The organisers are looking for young people aged 15-25 years living in Maleny and the surrounding hinterland who can meet from 3.30-5pm on a week day on a fortnightly basis at Maleny Lane and/or Maleny Neighbourhood Centre. Friends welcome the Pattemores home The Friends of Pattemore House are delighted to welcome JR (John Robert) and Emily Pattemore back home to Fairview (Pattemore House). It was an emotional moment for everyone when two beautiful original handtinted photographic portraits found their way back to Fairview recently. Now proudly on display, the 1939 portraits in carved gilded frames were handed down to Vicki Pattemore, a great-granddaughter of JR and Emily who donated them to Friends of Pattemore House, and the Friends have had them lovingly restored by local photographic restorers, James Frames. JR Pattemore was born in Somerset, England in 1850 and emigrated with his family to Australia at the age of five, settling on the south coast of NSW. He married Emily Craddock Organ in Ulladulla in 1871 and they had seven children, all of whom settled in Queensland. In 1906 Emily and JR moved to land they had purchased in Maleny, where in 1907 their four sons built Fairview for them by hand from white beech timber, using the pit sawing method. JR lived out his days at Fairview until his death in 1947 aged 96, as Maleny’s oldest resident. Emily, who suffered from poor health and required considerable care for most of her life, died in Maleny in 1938, aged 86. Pattemore House at 15 Porters Lane, Maleny is open to the public on the last Saturday of each month from 1-4pm and every Friday from 10am-12noon. There is plenty of parking and disabled access, with afternoon teas on the spacious verandas available on the Saturday openings only. The Friends welcome visitors to tour the house and gardens and inspect their new display.

Fundraising for education and the chance to win a safari! Her story is inspiring, beginning 17 years ago helping three students in Tanzania. It was around the same time that Teena and Steve Chumbley first moved to Tanzania and their paths crossed. From there, Gemma successfully grew the school, never failing to achieve her goal of helping transform the lives of many students through access to free education. The School of St Jude now operates across three campuses, helping more than 1,800 Tanzanian students. Teena says that hearing Gemma’s story is inspiring to anyone who has ever had a dream they want to follow. The opportunity to be involved and help fundraise to continue to help those less fortunate to have access to education is really valuable, she says. There will also be a sausage sizzle to enjoy on the day, of course, and afternoon tea will be served in the hall for a gold coin donation. There will be a jumping castle to entertain the children, together with a bric-a-brac stall and meat tray raffle. True hero grants
State Member for Caloundra Mark McArdle has announced that the popular true hero grants fund will open again in 2020. Each grant is worth $250 and grants will be awarded each month until June to outstanding and up-and-coming individuals or groups in the Caloundra electorate, with a total of $10,000 in grants given away. Mr McArdle said these small grants had been popular, so he was pleased to bring them back for another year. “There are hard-working students who have just been given an amazing opportunity to represent their school in a competition and may need help with the costs. “There are also selfless volunteers who pack food hampers for some, provide refuge to others, visit the elderly and put on great community events,” Mr McArdle said. Categories include, but are not limited to, women, the arts, community outreach, environment, sport, young achievers, entrepreneurs, volunteer and seniors. Applicants and their affiliated community group must reside and be based within the Caloundra electorate. A parent/guardian must make the application on behalf of children and successful applicants will have their photo and a video taken and details may be published in the media. The wet day did not dampen anyone’s spirits with visits to three very different locations. The trip took in the Brick Zone, which is a Lego display and building workshop space in Maleny, as well meeting with contemporary Australian artist Gary Myers as his studio. We also visited Heaven in the Hills B&B, a tranquil retreat at the end of a peaceful country road. Hinterland Families State achiever’s award
Lucy Robertson, a 2019 graduate of Nambour Christian College, has received a Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA) Distinguished Academic Achiever's Award, presented by Queensland Education Minister Grace Grace at a Brisbane ceremony on Saturday, February 15. Of the 37,738 Queensland students who graduated in 2019, Lucy was one of 31 students to receive an award, which recognises Queensland’s topperforming OP 1 year 12 students for outstanding academic achievement in their senior school studies. It came as no surprise to Nambour Christian College (NCC) principal Mr Geoff van der Vliet. “Lucy’s many achievements are outstanding and a source of inspiration to other students and encouragement to her teachers through all of her years at NCC," he said. "Her dedication and tenacity were demonstrated in all areas of her academic work and Lucy also demonstrated many of the benefits of being involved in music and the band program at the highest level for many years.” When asked about her career goal, Lucy said she wants “to work as a doctor in a specialist field such as cardiology or neurology". "I am motivated by the thought of having the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of others,” she said. Lucy has been accepted for the Doctor of Medicine program (provisional entry) at the University of Queensland.
School leaders 2020
Peachester State School officially welcomed its 2020 school leaders in a special parade recently, with students, teachers, parents and special guests gathering for the occasion. The morning saw the new leaders presented with their badges by school principal Kim Fillery, Sergeant Tully Anderson and P&C president Margie Jennings. Ms Fillery said this year the year 6 student leaders would be participating in an in-house program, which will enhance every student’s unique leadership style as well as giving them the skills to be a successful leader. “The program has been developed by our staff and captures what is important to the Peachester School community. “This includes being able to talk in public, give votes of thanks and how to represent their peers in our community,” she said. School captains are Ellie Jennings and Daniel Kelly, Coochin House captains are Erynn Barbeler and Archie Pulham and the Stanley House captains are Jessica Page and Lily Boyle. Congratulations to the leaders and the community wishes them every success for the year ahead.

A strong start at Beerwah students
Staff from Beerwah State School attended a positive behavior for learning conference last year to allow the school to strengthen its continued focus on creating a positive learning environment. Deputy principal Deb Lawrence said that, just like all schools, Beerwah reviewed and refined existing practices to support students and teachers to design calm and connected classrooms. “Following the conference, a competition was run to win art work created by Dr Sue Pillans, which reflected the key messages," Deb said. “Beerwah State School was pleased to win the competition and the art work is now proudly on display in the school’s library and acts as a wonderful reminder to create positive learning environments each and every day,” she said. Last year the school’s theme and key message were about being a bucket filler and being kind. The office was showered with sunflowers of kindness with a wall display to "put yourself in the picture" of kindness. This year the theme centres on belonging, with the idea that "you belong here". "Students have helped create the school office display by being a piece of the Beerwah puzzle, where we all fit together to be a beautiful picture," Deb said.

Maleny Freemasons host awareness campaign to save lives Men on the Sunshine Coast hinterland will have the opportunity to learn how to improve their lives by putting their health first, with the Maleny Freemasons to host the latest in a series of statewide events focussed on improving men’s mental and physical health. This Friday, February 28, Hand Heart Pocket the Charity of Freemasons Queensland, and the Maleny Freemasons in partnership with community not-for-profit health organisation CheckUP, will run a free public information session in Maleny as part of the Men’s Health
Matters awareness campaign. The state-wide campaign began in September 2019 and is visiting towns all over Queensland until March this year. Hand Heart Pocket chief executive officer Gary Mark said Men’s Health Matters was an important part of the charity’s work in the community. “Improving men’s mental and physical health, both at a state-wide and grassroots level, is part of our charitable focus, which is why we’ve partnered with CheckUP to bring this potentially
life-saving initiative to communities across Queensland,” Mr Mark said. The free public information session will be delivered by a healthcare provider and will cover a range of topics such as nutrition and physical activity, early detection of cancer, diabetes and heart disease, mental health and relationships. CheckUP CEO Ann Maree Liddy said this format was the perfect vehicle to spread awareness about men’s health and wellbeing. “We are delighted to have formed this partnership with Hand Heart Pocket and Freemason lodges throughout the state to deliver this campaign,” Ms Liddy said. “The importance of mental and physical health can’t be ignored and providing a safe environment for attendees to have conversations about these matters is essential.” Maleny Freemason Arthur Trass said the group had been promoting the event around the region and members were hoping for a good turnout on Friday. “It’s important that we make an effort to concentrate on how we’re doing from time to time, no matter what age,” Mr Trass said. “Please join us in supporting one another and learning how to lead better lives through improving men’s health. Partners also welcome.” The Maleny Men’s Health Matters information session will take place from 7pm on Friday, February 28 at the Maleny Masonic Centre on 30 Tamarind Street. We have a strong and stable democracy where the rule of law prevails; an abundance of opportunities for those who seek them; and a landscape with some of the world's oldest and most outstanding natural assets. Importantly, we pride ourselves on being fair, open and tolerant. The Sunshine Coast is, without a doubt, a piece of paradise in the greatest country on Earth. It is a tremendous honour to serve this region as its Mayor. It is a responsibility to our community that I never take for granted. First and foremost, I am your representative – a servant leader. Since I was first elected in 2012, our council has pursued a balanced agenda focussed on liveability, opportunity and prosperity – underpinned by my commitment to preserving our beautiful natural environment. This is why I and many others choose to live here and it is an attribute of our Sunshine Coast that I am not prepared to see compromised. Over the past eight years, our council has driven an array of opportunities and taken some bold steps to chart an exciting future for our communities. Most importantly, we have delivered results. Our Sunshine Coast today has moved ahead in leaps and bounds from where it was in 2012: • We have grown our economy by more than $5 billion. • We have seen more than 23,000 new jobs created in our high-value industries. • Business confidence remains at one of the highest levels in the state. • Household incomes have increased by more than 25%. • We are home to some of the nation’s most highly recognised and credentialed environmental sustainability projects and programs, like our solar farm and our Australian-first blue carbon partnership. This has not happened by chance – it is the product of the clear plans that the Sunshine Coast Council under my leadership has put in place and we have remained steadfast in seeing them delivered. The council I lead will always be at the forefront of exploring new horizons, generating new ideas, developing community pride, preserving our natural landscapes and ecosystems, and building opportunities for current and future generations. This has been my unwavering approach as Mayor of the Sunshine Coast because, at the end of the day, delivering results for our community and the region I serve is what matters. My ethos is pretty simple – to not only do well but do good. That is my goal and it is what you can always expect from me.
I am a long-term resident of the Sunshine Coast having lived here for more than 30 years. I am married with four children who attend schools on the Sunshine Coast. I am a family man at heart and understand the need to protect the Sunshine Coast’s lifestyle so that our children can enjoy it. I studied at the University of the Sunshine Coast where I obtained a Bachelor of Business and later obtained an MBA from the University of Queensland. I have a proven track record in financial management and hold strong values around honesty, integrity and community. I spent six years with the Royal Australian Navy and have held numerous senior positions with private enterprise. I believe I am well qualified for the position of Mayor. I was deputy mayor from 2012-2016 and a divisional councillor from 2004-2016. During this time I was also responsible for council’s finance, governance, corporate services and water portfolios. I have made the decision to stand for Mayor because I believe in fighting for our future. Many people I have spoken with have said they feel we are losing our lifestyle, local community concerns are being ignored and there is a lack of transparency in the current council. I agree and want to respond before it’s too late. I will lead with integrity and stand up for the residents of the Sunshine Coast. It is important to have a prosperous economy but it cannot be at the expense of the Sunshine Coast’s lifestyle and environment. If elected Mayor, I will: • provide ethical and transparent leadership that unites people • consider community expectations in decision making • preserve the coast lifestyle • protect the environment • put community first • reduce debt • support economic development across all sectors of our economy including aviation, agriculture, tourism, technology and manufacturing so we continue to build a diversified economic base. Key actions I will undertake are to: • introduce a conflict of interest register and remove voting rights if a conflict of interest is declared • review the Planning Scheme to protect our region's assets and ensure community expectations are reflected • support the development of the Maleny swimming pool • complete the Windsor Road link in Nambour • develop a master plan for towns on the railway line to provide economic opportunities for existing small business • rebuild the natural environment along our riparian corridors • champion small business development by introducing programs that offer better support and enable scale-up as well as start-up opportunities. Gidday to the hinterland! This is Don Innes typing at you. I proudly announced my intention to run for Mayor on Australia Day and promptly “celebrated” by heading out to work distributing my first campaign pamphlet – on a public holiday! I won’t go back over any of that here but I mention it because it tells a specific story about me. My first quality is that of hard work and I already believe that our wonderful hinterland sees that in me - every week. I have been really pleased to stop and chat with so many lovely residents and am already quite chuffed at the genuine support and the encouragement that I have received from you all. Unfortunately, I also have to openly acknowledge that so many of you are making your vehement opposition to the incumbent known ... quite forcefully as it goes. That is, the appetite for change is now on a wave of growing community opinion. I am completely positive about the hinterland and its various vibrant towns and their place in the wider picture that is the whole Sunnie Coast. My second quality is to bring that picture into a focus for the real benefit of those west of the highway - that the hinterland must be treated less as a nice Sunday drive and more as a powerhouse of employment, growth and opportunity. As diverse homes for farmers and retirees, for first home owners and property investors, for renters and new settlers, for commuters and residents, for the young and the not so young, indeed for all colours and creeds. That makes each and every one of you reading this into a key stakeholder - in the jargon that council likes to employ. My third quality will be to fight tirelessly, without respite, for the rights of all! You are all key stakeholders to me and I will make sure that is also true of the rest of any new council. Your rights are to not be harried and harassed over parking, your footpath, your plans, your cars, your granny flat, your animals, even your Christmas decorations - or by a divisive council administration that bases its procedures on an apparent desire to turn community members on each other through ‘complaints’. My fourth personal quality is that of an accomplished writer and of an engaging public speaker – both of which will be required in significant volumes in a new council. But my fifth quality exists in complete silence! I love to read (as you also obviously do - if you got this far) and so I will be thoroughly going over policy and local laws to remove unfair and inconsistent practices. My sixth quality is simple. I listen.

Recollections of weddings from days gone by By Sonia Clark Maleny couple Val and Vince Carbery celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in December last year and we featured a lovely story about their celebrations in our first edition this year. Their daughter Alison had forwarded clippings of the 1959 newspaper article of her parents' wedding, which as well as being a wonderful blast from the past also provided a fascinating and charmingly detailed insight into the occasion. Featured in the local paper of the time, the 'Nambour Chronicle', the article beautifully captured the intricate details of the outfits, styling and décor of the special day, as well details of pre-wedding parties and gifts. Val said that back then everyone in the community was very interested in weddings, partly because it was a close knit community and everybody knew each other. “Weddings were always of interest as a celebratory event in the community, though in those days guests were mostly made up of family members," Val said.
“People looked forward to local weddings, often travelling to different churches in the parish on wedding days just to catch a glimpse of the bride leaving the church. “It was just something all the young people did back then. Many of us worked locally in the shops around the area and it was always a topic of conversation as to who was getting married as we all knew each other. “If someone was getting married, we’d all head along and wait outside the church to see the outfits and the wedding party,” she said. In an era where people generally didn't live together before marriage, Val recalls that wedding and pre-wedding party gifts were always very practical and were provided to help set up a house for the couple. In their case gifts included a bed lamp and clock. What the wedding article from the time captures really well is the essence of the occasion by the sheer depth of description. For example, Val’s dress is thoughtfully described as being of "white nylon tulle over taffeta, crinoline skirt trimmed with Chantilly lace and satin bows complete with bodice of Chantilly lace over a boat neckline", to the waist length tulle veil held with orange blossom. Similarly, great description is given to the outfits of the mothers of the bride and groom and the flower girl, the bride's niece, Jennifer Bombling (nee Allen-Waters).

"Misses Aileen Guille and Patricia Malone the bridesmaids, were frocked alike in mauve flock nylon over taffeta, full length skirt and round the neck bodice, forming a ballet waistline, with which they wore curvettes trimmed with dainty mauve flowers and carrying mauve nylon umbrellas with trails of orchids.” Married at the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church in Maleny followed by a reception at the Maleny RSL, a lot of column space was also invested into the flower arrangements ("blooms of gladioli and roses") and décor. For example, the article describes the reception tables as being "daintily set out with flowers and floral decorations on the stage, with the centre piece being a large silver horseshoe". The décor at the entrance of the hall is also interestingly described as "a silver horseshoe with silver bells suspended" from the ceiling. Interestingly, 60 years on when Val and Vince celebrated their diamond anniversary they were able to return to the same venue as their original reception at the Maleny RSL Hall.

Insect wipeout continues
Insect populations are under massive threat worldwide and recent research reveals dramatic rates of decline that may lead to the extinction of 40% of the world’s insect species over the next few decades. The main causes are: 1. Urbanisation, habitat loss and intensive agriculture 2. Pollution, mainly synthetic pesticides and fertilisers 3. Biological factors, including pathogens and introduced species 4. Climate change A rethinking of current agricultural practices, especially a serious reduction in pesticide usage, and looking at ecologically-based practices is urgently needed. We also need to clean up both agricultural and urban polluted waters In a recent piece in the US 'Huffington Post', Australian scientist Francisco Sánchez-Bayo, coauthor of the new study on the worldwide decline of entomofauna (insects), said about the rate of disappearance: “It is now very rapid. "In 10 years you will have a quarter less, in 50 years only half left and in 100 years you will have none. If insect species losses cannot be halted, this will have catastrophic consequences for both the planet’s ecosystems and for the survival of mankind.“ On Australia's serious fires, Dr Tanya Latty, University of Sydney entomologist, said: "It's conceivable that species could have been wiped out without us even knowing they were there. It's not just the size of the fires themselves, but the fact that they are occurring alongside many other stressors like habitat loss, climate change, invasive species and pesticide misuse." Professor Michael Braby, from the ANU, says the bushfires had a huge impact on our native insects and all plants and animals relying on them. "Insects are critical for a healthy environment," Professor Braby said. "They are food for many other animals,

Value for money
I refer to Mr Andrew Powell's letter in GC&M News (February 19). The Queensland Government spends billions of dollars on a wide range of goods and services to support the delivery of frontline services for Queenslanders. In other words, it seeks to optimise value for money. They look at all aspects of a tender, not just the local supply aspect. It is well documented on the Queensland Government's website that in assessing tenders, it looks at value for money, local benefits test, optimising opportunities for local suppliers, probity and integrity in procurement, and best practice principles. These are well tested principles and guidelines that the government follows. The assessment of this tender was no different. The criteria would be scored against tender responses, then weighted against factors described above. Each would be provided a score. These scores would be totalled and selections made. I have no doubt that Maleny Dairies put forward a good case as did Lactalis. One of the main criteria with tenders is value for money. Without knowing what the final tender price was, milk retail prices are a guide. Today, Pauls Smarter Milk retails at $3.50. Maleny Full Cream milk retails at $4.60, $1.10 more. If retail prices were close to the tender price, then Maleny Dairies did not represent value for money and the tender was awarded to the organisation that best met the criteria, local benefits notwithstanding. The Labor government did what was best for Queensland, regardless of allegations of foreign ownership. The products are produced locally in Australia and support Australian farmers. Mr Powell is loose with the truth. I support Maleny Dairies and will only buy their milk, even though it is the most expensive. I would suggest that Mr Powell direct his ire at the local supermarkets that sell cheap milk that lessens the income of our Australian dairy farmers struggling to survive. Ken Dyer Landsborough
You Said It Jobs for regional Queensland
It was good to see that of the new jobs created in Queensland in November 2019, 60 per cent of them were in regional areas. Data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics showed almost 6,000 jobs added outside the Brisbane area in November 2019. On the Sunshine Coast, 182 young people were helped to get their apprenticeship for free since July 2019. The Sunshine Coast Technical Training Centre at Caloundra supports the Queensland Government’s $32 million training initiative. What started as a partnership between state schools at Beerwah, Caloundra, Kawana Waters and Meridan, now assists students from 35 schools. I was also pleased to see that the Labor government restored the TAFE system of training apprentices. In total, the state economy has grown by 235,000 jobs since 2015. Many of these jobs have been in new industries such as renewable energy, hydrogen aviation and biofuels. Queensland is on track to meet its 50 per cent renewable energy target by 2030. Living - Arts New exhibition at Vianta Arts Vianta Arts in Beerwah features the work of artist Donna Munro during March. Donna's main focus and passion is portraiture but she also has a love for abstract that she is currently exploring. Born and bred in New Zealand, Donna moved to the Sunshine Coast 28 years ago and got her artist career started 20 years ago when she started attending art classes. Donna’s desire to experiment and try new things draws her to the excitement of mixed media and the exploration of different techniques and genres, gaining inspiration from her surroundings and the people she meets. Donna, an award-winning artist whose work is collected worldwide, says she finds her work relaxing and therapeutic.
“It’s a magical feeling to create something beautiful out of nothing,” she said. She has also been teaching online classes for the past three years and more recently has begun teaching in-person workshops on the Sunshine Coast. Bernard O’Scanaill and his cows Nostalgic, spontaneous, humorous, re-inventing and inspiring are just some of the words that could be used to describe the upcoming exhibition at Maleny Art Direct featuring local artist Bernard O’Scanaill. Originally from Connemara in the west of Ireland, self-taught artist Bernard has been residing on the Sunshine Coast since 1990. He took up a career in teaching and continued to pursue his many artistic talents that include music, design painting and construction. An accomplished musician, award winning composer and acclaimed painter, Bernard’s inspiration for his art is based on what he has experienced directly. “I'm a spontaneous artist who simply sets himself in front of a blank canvas, blanks his mind and even closes his eyes before trusting those initial strokes to lead the way," Bernard said. “The results can be anything and vary in style from the abstract to seemingly detailed and intricate works,” he said. Over the years, when time permits, he has been

drawn more and more to his easel. His talent with brush, palette knife and sometimes his finger has resulted in the development of a style that is bold, positive, assured and unselfconscious. His work has been described as possessing an impulse to confront, unnerve, to challenge and to amuse. Bernard has exhibited in Ireland, France and various galleries in Australia and his work can be found in many corporate, public and private collections in the Unites States, France, Ireland and Australia. Bernard's current exhibition is called Damhsa (pronounced dow-sah), meaning to dance. This latest collaboration of work is landscapes featuring his famous black and white cows, which stems from Bernard’s Friday morning ritual of milking his three cows, and a collection of works of his memories and vision of his home in Ireland. Opening night is on Saturday, March 14 at 4pm in conjunction with celebrations for St Patrick’s Day. You might even be lucky to experience a glimpse of Bernard’s musical ability on the evening. After all, the Irish are known for a jig or two.

Health &Wellbeing World’s greatest shave By Lea Parkes In Australia, blood cancer is a big problem. It’s one of the top four most frequently diagnosed cancers and is one of the leading causes of death by cancer in our country. Every day another 41 Australians are told they have blood cancer (that’s one person every 36 minutes) and sadly 20 people lose their life to blood cancer. Back in 1998 the World’s Greatest Shave was created to help change this situation, with the idea being that people of all ages could channel their inner superhero and shave, colour or wax their hair – supported all the way by proud family, friends, colleagues and classmates. Some will have a personal connection to blood cancer, while others take part simply to have fun, tick a bucket list box and raise money for a good cause. More than two million Aussies have taken part over the past two decades, with an estimated 37,500 kilograms of hair removed! Will you be one of the many who will take up the challenge this year? GC&M News has heard from some locals who are doing their bit including Maleny’s Jared Ashcroft and his partner Chris Maylor who will be going under the clippers in memory of their friend Neil Mackinnon who died earlier this year from myelofibrosis. Jared said that Neil never let his diagnosis and the progress of the disease get the better of him, continuing to enjoy his life and passion for fast Fords like nothing was even wrong. He was a well-known, well-loved and wellrespected member of the Australian Ford RS/ST community, a great friend and mentor to many, and had a deep impact on all those who had the

Member for Glass House Andrew Powell is once again calling on the community to join forces and help "shave" the world from blood cancer. Last year, Andrew raised a total of $558.07 that went towards dying his beard. In previous years he has given people the option to donate money towards dying or shaving off his beard. Andrew said dying always won, so this year he has removed that option and taken matters into his own hands and will be "buzzing the beard right off"! “I’m excited to raise money for such a good cause again. I know there are people who were pretty upset that more donations went towards colouring my beard last year," he said.

Out & About Landsborough overpass options explored The Landsborough Overpass Reference Committee (LORC) has presented its assessment of a range of options identified to direct traffic through Landsborough when the level crossing is closed as part of the rail duplication upgrade to a hall full of Landsborough locals last Friday evening.
With ten options on the table, the committee evaluated them according to six criteria, scoring and ranking each option. Time to get baking
Beerwah CWA members are putting the call out this week to anyone who can donate home-baked goods for a good old-fashioned bake sale. They are looking for biscuits, slices, cakes, scones or whatever you are inspired to bake. The fundraiser, to support Australia’s ongoing bushfire crisis, will be held at Beerwah CWA Hall in Simpson Street from 9am-12noon on Saturday, February 29. Baked donations can be dropped off at Neddy’s Nosebag all day on Friday, February 28 or bring them to the CWA Hall from 8am on the day. If you’re not able to bake, you can still contribute greatly by coming along on the morning and enjoying home-baked treats. There’ll be live music, kids’ entertainment and great community spirit as the community rallies together for such a worthy cause.

In the Garden Jobs for the yard in February
• Wait until the rain eases a bit before giving the lawn a fertiliser boost coming into autumn, or it will just wash away and be wasted. • At the start of the month, put spring flowering bulbs such as freesia, anemone, ranunculus and daffodil in the fridge vege crisper and plant out at the end of the month. • Plant strawberry runners towards the end of the month into well-mulched beds with lots of compost and manure. • Stake dahlias and chrysanthemums if they’re starting to get tall. • If you’re planting seedlings for a spring display, it is timely to watch out for cut worms. This soil-borne pest chews through the seedling stem at ground level. At the first sign, spray with pyrethrum. • Try not to plan any work in the backyard that needs heavy machinery or vehicles until the soil dries and firms up. Otherwise you risk compacting the ground and churning up soggy soil – not a good practice. • Keep an eye on your citrus for aphids and leaf miner. They breed up quickly in these moist conditions and damage new growth. Treat as required with pyrethrum spray or white oil. • White cedar caterpillars are on the move. Wrap a hessian bag around the trunk and check underneath for the damaging insects as they’ll congregate there during the day. Squash or spray them with a pyrethrum spray. • Start planting broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower seedlings from mid-March. Watch out for little green caterpillars as they can destroy your seedlings overnight. • Plan where you’d like to plant your bare-rooted roses when they become available in winter. Select the sites and prepare them by digging in manure and mulch. Do the same about a month before planting (more digging in June) and your bare-rooted roses will thrive.

Great win away with our boys winning 2-1 and getting up overall by two shots to keep us in the top two. Gr8s division 5 ladies round four Bribie Island. The ladies are on fire and remain on top of the table winning all three rinks. Both the men and ladies are home this Saturday at 10am. Please come and support them. Q7s, division four, round seven: Pine Rivers at home was a very tight game with Barry Kirk getting up in the singles with Len Skerry and Tony Verdonck finishing the win of by one shot in the pairs. The fours only went down by one shot. Q7s division five, round seven: Windsor home was a hard fought game with the away team getting up 2-1. This week’s game is on Saturday at 2pm at home. The Landsborough Tennis Club's first Saturday afternoon session held on February 15 was a great success with more than 30 participants in attendance. Consequently, the club has confirmed that the sessions will continue for the remainder of school term one at the Landsborough courts on Maleny Street. Maleny Bowls Club Contributed by Graeme Glover A wide variety of events has made Maleny Bowls Club (MBC) a very busy place during the last week. Big thanks to those volunteers who have helped in any way organising any of these events. We had teams travel to Woodford for a great day of bowls on Wednesday. Well done to Miles Allen, Jim Weidman and Dave Edwards, as reciprocal visits are a very important part of the club’s program. Wednesday night was another busy but fun night for all. Thanks to those folks who have put their name on the rosters for various events - it is much appreciated and this adds to the sense of club. Friday scroungers saw some new names in the winner’s circle. Congratulations to Joe Walters, Ben Fawns, Mick Bulger, Curley Peterson and Brian Squires on winning your respective rinks. Big thanks to Jim Weidman who stepped in to run the games in the absence of regular coordinator Miles Allen. A full rink is signed up for the Monday monthly pairs with a full report next week. Great support from members makes this a terrific day of bowls for visitors and our own members. The green will be in good condition thanks to Dave Edwards and the food will be its usual excellent standard thanks also to Pam Nott and her trusty crew. It is great to see so many other groups use the bowls club as a venue for promoting local businesses such as one of our sponsors, Maleny Paints, or just family get-togethers for various celebrations. As a community facility we try to make the best use of MBC for the benefit of all. A reminder to all our members, shopping local keeps locals in jobs. We have been able to secure a coaching morning at the club with district coaches. All welcome. The date is Sunday, March 29. Try to support this as we take this opportunity to give our bowlers the best available knowledge to help you enjoy bowls at MBC. The Range Croquet Club Contributed by Ken Barker Wallace Roy, hoping to prepare for a tournament on Saturday, February 15, found the lawn adjudged too sodden for play on Thursday, February 13 and had to be content with developing his mental toughness. In the photograph he is practising mind dominance exercises over Gillian Bradley. It must have done him some good because he won the beginner’s golf croquet tournament in Nambour that he, Bev Sockhill and 14 others competed in, with a picket fence score. Congratulations Wallace. It might also be the new mallet. Excellent play returned to the lawn on Thursday, February 13. Donna Manning and Wallace played well to beat Kath Smith and Sarah Widin 9–6 in an association game on a heavy lawn. The mower is being repaired and, as my old cows would say, “the grass is too much. We can’t keep up with it”. Vince Carbery, returning after three months, played some great shots against Ken Barker but couldn’t string the breaks together and was unlucky to go down 8–12 in a very enjoyable game for both players. Coaching for beginners and others is available from 8-10am on Saturdays. These are popular sessions with accredited coaches in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. Play days are Thursdays and Sundays at 2pm for 2.30 pm. Contributed by Brenda Briese Finally we've been able to play some golf! The rain was most welcome by everyone but it's meant a lot of false starts this year. Thursday, February 20 was the first men's invitation day for 2020. The field was down on past events, probably due to it still being quite hot, with 60 players. The competition was a four-ball aggregate Stableford and the winners were Bernie and Cathy Stone on 71 points from Lindsay Webb and Brenda Briese on 67 points, second runners up Lea and Ray Doyle on 65 points. NTPs: 2 Cheryl Jepson and Theron Carpenter, 5 - Lindsay Webb and Brenda Briese, 16 - Wayne and Helen Lewis, 18 - Geoff and Sue Williamson. BRD to 59 points. The golf course is in great condition now, so here's hoping we can have some more nice weather in the coming weeks.

In B grade first place went to Mo Lawrence with 35 points, runner up Paul Vicary 34 points on a count back from Neil Cronk and Merv Schultz, both 34 points, and third to Jillian Jones 33 points, also on a count back from Vivien Powell 33 points. NTPs: 1 – Glenn Bond, 5 – Rod Waldron, 8 - Chris Pottinger, 12 – Mike Hallam, 14 - Dave Nielsen, and 17 - Dan Black. Wednesday, February 19: The ladies played in an 18-hole single Stableford competition with first place going to Vivien Powell with 36 points, runner up Toni Bishop 33 points and third Seri Tytherleigh 32 points on a count back from Kerry Nieper 32 points. Contributed by Pauine Fraley Witta Wagtails played their first game of the season at Cooroy but they lost to Cooroy Aces who were the stronger team on the day. Despite the Wagtails’ loss, the competition and tennis between the two teams was very enjoyable. Thanks to Gerry Gabriel, Sonia Douglas, Cheryl Cavanagh and Sheryn Golledge. The season can only get better for the Whistlers whose first match this season was against Maroochy Meteors. Paula Cudmore, Donna Kuskopt, Brenda Warner and Maree Hooley did not have the answers for this talented team losing 0-8 sets. The team is looking forward to upcoming matches and hopefully some cooler weather. The Wildcats played Yandina in the first game of the season. The girls enjoyed good tennis, long rallies, great sportsmanship and with only the last two sets remaining Yandina led by just one game. In an exciting and hard fought victory Yandina won the day by four games. Special mention goes to Annie Stewart who served really well and was on fire at the net.
