ell, things have been all action in our office this week! After having our once a year break from the weekly paper for Easter, we have moved into some sort of fast forward mode to get the paper put together and at the printers in record time on Friday this week because of Anzac Day. Some of you will have received the paper on Monday this week and some will have had the regular Wednesday delivery. We have done this so our dedicated team of inserters and deliverers can also have the public holiday to participate in Anzac Day. For Brownie and me it is generally our busiest public holiday of the year. We start our work day with the camera from 4am for the early Dawn Services, followed by the 6am Dawn Services at Glass House Mountains. Then we are off to a couple of parades before finishing up at our office in Glass House Mountains – it works out well for us that the local parade comes right past our front door and this year there will also be planes flying overhead at between 11 - 11.20am (plus or minus 30 seconds). See details page 4. As usual we will be allocating quite a bit of space in the next edition for all of the Anzac Day coverage. Former Beerwah State Primary and class of 2010 Beerwah High School student, Chloe Watts, has been selected as one of the state finalists for this year’s Miss Universe Australia. Representing the State of NSW, Chloe successfully auditioned against hundreds of other hopeful contestants to gain her place in the finals which take place this Sunday, April 30. Chloe moved to Sydney in 2014 at the age of 20, and this will be the first time that the former Beerwah local has entered a pageant. She is excited to have made it to the selection finals and feels it is a great opportunity to develop personally and participate in a great experience. “I feel Miss Universe Australia gives you a platform to be a positive role model and use your voice to raise awareness with the up-coming Australian population on issues that are important and that we should all have an informed opinion on,” explains Chloe. Miss Universe Australia is held every year with girls entering through their respective state, moving on to the state final and then onto the national final where the contestants compete for the title of Miss Universe Australia who will then go on to represent Australia at the Miss Universe

As part of his commitment to fight for the needs of the Glass House community, Member for Glass House Andrew Powell MP has lent his support to a petition calling on Sunshine Coast Council to provide additional disability parking in Maleny.

Mr Powell is working with the Principal Petitioner, Kodi Hohn of Kashmiah Hair, in requesting the council to provide more disability parking at the top end of Maple Street on the southern side. “Maple Street currently has five disability parking spaces in the middle precinct that all have reasonable access to a pedestrian crossing allowing people with mobility issues quick access to businesses in the centre of the Maple Street business strip,” Mr Powell said. “Unfortunately there is only one disability park at the top end of Maple Street and being on the northern side, makes it extremely difficult for people with mobility issues to get to the town centre. “I see firsthand every day out the front of my

Mr Powell said the old Maleny Police Station is an ideal location for disability parking now the existing loading zone is no longer required. It would provide a safe, flat and accessible area to have dedicated disability parking on the southern side of Maple Street and this is what the petition is requesting from the council. “The petition will be available for signing at my office, at Kashmiah Hair (43 Maple Street) or at the Maleny Community Centre (23 Maple Street) until the end of May,” Mr Powell concluded.

Maleny Police Station opens its doors Minister for Police Mark Ryan and Central Region Assistant Commissioner Alistair Dawson officially opened the new Maleny Police Station just in time for Easter. The station, located on Macadamia Drive, would service areas from Beerwah to Palmwoods and house one sergeant, two senior constables and one constable. Mr Ryan said the district’s police were delighted to see a new facility open as the existing Maple

Much-loved wood show is on again in Maleny The Maleny Wood Expo returns to the Maleny Showgrounds this Labour Day long weekend. One of Australia’s best loved wood shows, the expo is a major highlight of the national woodworking calendar. Visitors can enjoy numerous high calibre exhibits, workshops and activities that showcase Australia’s stunning native timbers and the incredible skill of the various craftspeople and wood artisans. ‘From Seed to Fine Furniture’, there will be an amazing array of hand crafted timber products, workshops, live entertainment, music, stalls and more. Hosted by Barung Landcare, the expo is shaping up to be another huge celebration of Australia’s beautiful native timbers and their sustainable uses, showcased through the craft of local, national and international wood artisans. As always there will be three days jam packed with all things wonderfully wood related. Some of the highlights include the following: • The inaugural ‘Junior Landcare Paddock’ will offer a hands-on, experiential ‘village’ of activities and workshops for kids to inspire them to unleash their creative spirit with awesome activities and workshops. • The Speakers Program at the Maleny music tent will feature a number of interesting and topical conversations from the ‘tiny house’ movement to ‘living with turtles on the Sunshine Coast’. • The 10th annual Wootha Prize exhibition is the only themed exhibition art prize for woodworkers and wood artists in Australia. This year the theme is ‘inside out’.

Other highlights include the incredibly talented chainsaw carvers live in action, or head along and watch the sawdust fly as timber millers recycle and transform dead and windblown trees into usable timber pieces. The toolshed will feature a selection of beautifully crafted hand tools with ‘bigger toys’ featured outside. Matt George will be one of the chainsaw artists exhibiting their talent and skill at this years’ event. Working with recycled timbers, Matt travels the state carving sustainable creations out of wood. Many locals will be familiar with his work with the ‘Maleny Animal Trail’ where he carved approximately 50 animals to be featured around the local landmarks and businesses of Maleny, and while he has a passion for carving animals his work also features other motifs and more practical pieces such as children’s stools and outdoor pieces. For this year’s show, Matt will be using his chainsaws to carve a three-metre gum tree log into a depiction of an animal that is almost extinct on our planet. He hopes that by carving this piece from scratch to creation over the three days he will be able to allow people to form a connection and realisation about the importance of making ethical decisions in everyday life. He also hopes that it will serve to raise the profile of this beautiful but endangered creature – of which only 60 remain, as well as the mindfulness of the audience. Queensland Labor has formally endorsed Jason Hunt as the Labor candidate for Caloundra in the forthcoming State Election. Jason, 47, is among the latest group of Labor candidates announced by Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk, having come within sight of securing victory in Caloundra at the last election. Jason said he was honoured to be given the opportunity to again represent Labor on Premier Palaszczuk’s team. “I’ll be working hard right up until election day to win the support of Caloundra residents,” said Mr Hunt. “For far too long the Sunshine Coast has been taken for granted by its cabal of Liberal-National MPs. “Having grown up here, and now raising my own son here in Caloundra, I’m committed to making sure local families have access to first-class health and education services, and the opportunity to find work close to home.” A Sunshine Coast resident for the past 44 years, Jason is heavily involved in the local community, working closely with the Caloundra traders in an effort to revitalise Caloundra’s legendary Bulcock Street precinct. Jason brings to the role vast experience, having served for five years in the Australian Army’s Light Horse Regiment and, most recently, eighteen years as a custodial officer at the Woodford Correctional Centre. Minister for Innovation, Science and the Digital Economy, Leeanne Enoch, said that Jason is a passionate community representative who has worked tirelessly to promote the revitalisation of the Caloundra business district. “Jason Hunt is Caloundra through and through,” said Ms Enoch. “He understands that Caloundra small businesses are the heartbeat of the local economy. “On the Sunshine Coast, there are more than 100 small businesses per 1000 residents – higher than the Queensland average. “It’s important the area has a strong voice to help existing small businesses grow and employ, and to support the creation of new ventures and jobs,” she said.

State elections are approaching By Greg Brown Glasshouse Country & Maleny News has long been held by local residents as the leading community newspaper – the place where they look to be kept informed about local issues. With talk of a State Election in the wind sometime this year, local candidates and political parties have begun their ‘soft’ campaigning. Our approach – as it is for every election – is to be fair and equitable to all and to ensure that each candidate is given equal opportunity to communicate with readers (and potential voters), who are then provided with information on which they can judge each of the candidates and make their votes count on election day. As each candidate for the local seats of Glass House (or Tibrogargan) and Caloundra identifies themselves and send us a media statement announcing their candidacy, we’ll run them in the paper. We give candidates and their supporters the opportunity to contribute to the letters page – within

certain word count and frequency boundaries. Once the election is called, we offer all candidates space on special election editorial pages free of charge, which includes answering questions from the readers. Improving Kilcoy-Beerwah Road $1 million worth of works are set to begin on Kilcoy-Beerwah Road to improve two kilometres of the road, between River and Maleny-Stanley River Roads. Main Roads and Road Safety Minister Mark Bailey said the project will include the removal of the existing road surface, rehabilitation of the road and line marking. “This will provide an improved road surface

and safer driving conditions for motorists on this section of Kilcoy-Beerwah Road,” Mr Bailey said. He said the project would take around one month to complete, weather permitting, with work taking place during the day between 5am and 5pm, from Monday to Saturday. Motorists may experience some minor delays during the works, and traffic controllers, reduced speed limits and signage will be in place.

Optus tower for Glass House

Optus are looking to construct a 30m mobile phone tower on a Woodlands chicken farm at 58 Barrs Road, Glass House Mountains. According to the development application lodged with Sunshine Coast Council recently, the tower would be sited at the rear of the property, with the closest dwelling currently being 380m away. Two other possible sites were investigated and rejected, including a location within the car park of Club Glass House. Co-location onto a number of existing and proposed communications towers was also considered and discounted as unfeasible. According to the application documents, Optus believe the tower is needed to improve 3G and 4G services to the township of Glass House Mountains. Water stations fill up 24,000 water bottles

Unitywater-sponsored refill stations at Australia Zoo have filled up 23,614 water bottles with free, chilled tap water over the last three months. The refill stations remind zoogoers to stay hydrated and avoid single-use plastic bottles. Unitywater Community Relations Specialist Kate Cash said Unitywater sponsored five refill stations around the zoo that track how many 750ml water bottles have been filled up. “These are part of our ‘Back to Tap’ campaign, encouraging people to choose tap water as a cheaper and environmentally friendly alternative to plastic bottled water,” she said. “It’s fantastic to think that every time a reusable bottle is filled with tap water at these stations, we are helping to reduce single use plastic in our community.” As part of World Water Day on March 22, Unitywater ran a competition on their Facebook page to win a tour of the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital led by Robert Irwin. Australia Zoo’s Director Wes Mannion said, “Here at Australia Zoo, we’re passionate about managing our effect on the environment and reducing plastic waste is a huge part of that. “This initiative is proving to be a fantastic way of doing just that. One month remains for Sunshine Coast organisations to apply for a $15,000 Community Heritage Grant. Sunshine Coast community group the Peachester History Committee is applying for a Community Heritage Grant from the Federal Government to make its Inigo Jones collection available for public viewing. There is one month left to make an application to this program, with individual grants of up to $15,000 available. Federal Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace encouraged the group to get involved and visited Peachester Hall recently to meet with the committee and view the collection. Helen Page, President of the Peachester History Committee said, “Inigo Jones lived here, but he touched people all over Australia, and right around the world. People in other states relied on his weather forecasts just as much as our own parents did. Our Inigo Jones collection is truly of national significance and it needs to be housed and displayed appropriately so that it is secure, and so that the public can access it. “At the moment we have to store the collection in the Peachester Hall and in our homes, so it can be difficult when people want to see it. It is the Federal Government’s responsibility to make sure our heritage is protected and preserved. Helping communities to carry out these projects will be a lot cheaper than the Government doing it themselves,” she said. Mr Wallace welcomed the committee’s application and urged other community groups to apply. “We have so much important history here on the Sunshine Coast, and so many wonderful stories to tell,” he said. “I will be writing to the Government on behalf of the Peachester History Committee application and I strongly encourage other groups

Mimics and camouflage artists

The range of adaptations exhibited by insects to increase survival is truly astonishing. One strategy used is that of mimicry, which refers to imitation of a form, colours or behaviours of other animals or even of floral elements of the environment. The most basic form of mimicry is ‘crypsis’ or camouflage, which is any adaptation which allows the insect to blend with its environment. Many moths, grasshoppers, and cicadas resemble the bark or leaves of their preferred plant species. The masters of crypsis are stick insects, whose body shape as well as colour imitates an element of its environment. Many toxic or stinging insects advertise their Stick insect defensibility with bright colours. These colours have been adopted by other species that do not have these defences. Called ‘Batesian’ mimicry, this is used by many moths and butterflies. Highly toxic Lycid beetles have a brick red and black coloration that is copied by other beetles, moths and flies (longhorn beetle mimic pictured). The coloration and body shapes of stinging wasps are mimicked by flies, moths and beetles. Ants have few predators due to their unpalatability. Their body shape and antenna-waving behaviour is imitated by spiders, and early instars of beetles, crickets, mantids and stick insects. Mimicry can also be of a chemical nature; for example, some spiders exude pheromones that mimic those of male moths on which they feed. PhD researcher buzzing Local USC PhD student Rachele Wilson, who is investigating the foraging patterns of Australian native bees in forests and orchards, has received a grant from the Friends of Maroochy Regional Bushland Botanic Gardens. Rachele, who lives at Balmoral Ridge, was awarded the organisation’s $1,500 USC Student Research Grant to assist with the costs of her cutting-edge research, which uses an approach trialled in only a handful of laboratories around the world. “I’m using a process known as pollen DNA meta-barcoding to identify the plant sources of pollen foraged by several bee species in natural and disturbed landscapes,” said Rachele, 29. “Meta-barcoding involves matching environmental DNA, from pollens in this case, to the DNA barcodes of plants or organisms. “I’m aiming to find out what vegetation is required to support these bee species and the pollination services they provide across South-East Queensland.” Ms Wilson, who graduated from Honours to her doctorate since completing a USC Bachelor of Science in 2013, said she hoped to capture some of Australia’s 1,600 solitary bee species that were rarely studied. “I’m expecting to gain important insights into the biology of bees through this world-first study comparing the foraging behaviour of solitary and social bees, using the latest genetics techniques.” She said she was delighted to receive the grant because one of the sites within her study was located at the Maroochy Botanic Gardens. “Preliminary findings suggest the stingless bees at that site forage on four plant species in autumn, seven in winter and five in spring,” she said. “I’m expecting these numbers to rise when the results for summer come in.” Rachele Wilson and Malcolm Cox

Make a mean jam drop?

Perfected your pesto? Or reckon your banana muffins are ‘to die for!’? Then why not consider entering one of your culinary creations in this year's Maleny Show? There are heaps of categories to enter and get involved in; from all types of baked goods imaginable to sweets, preserves and pestos, floristry and plants, handicrafts, photography, woodwork and so much more. Some of the more unusual categories that can be entered include decorating a gum boot to reflect this year’s theme (junior and open class judging), making a novelty tea cosy and decorating chocolate crackles (junior entry). Registering is easy. While pavilion, livestock and main events require preregistration, all other categories, events and competitions can be entered on the day. Grab a copy of the 2017 Maleny Show Book or check it out online to see the massive array of categories that can be entered – some of our favourites are the ‘men’s only’ packet cake mix (iced) competition and ‘bush house plant’ category. Another great way to get involved is to become a member of the Maleny Show Society. In the lead up to this year’s show, volunteers will be selling memberships for a few hours in the mornings outside the newsagents on Maple Street. Bankfoot House

The families who lived in Bankfoot House in the late 1800s and all through the 1900s were adept at re-using objects or making their own. Recycling was part of everyday living. A farrier’s knife was fashioned from a curved bone handle and a home-made metal blade, and was used for trimming horses’ hooves during shoeing. Heavy metal bullock chains were joined together with multiple loops of fencing wire. Broken links in other chains were replaced with loops of wire. A hole in the house’s outer wall was patched with the lid of an empty kerosene tin. Clothes pegs were made from wire. Empty tobacco tins were used as button boxes. In the kitchen, an old teapot section became a tea cosy for the next teapot. The inside of the old, slightly larger one was lined with leather, and the spout and handle were removed. The old teapot was slipped over the new one to keep the tea nice and hot. There’s also a bread knife made from a strip of metal with a serrated edge rivetted to a handle. When the base of a glass sugar bowl broke, the object was repaired using a shaped piece of flat wood. A homemade wooden cupboard is a highlight of the collection. Three Texaco oil company boxes were stacked on top of each other and a door made from gelignite box lids attached using two metal hinges. A strip of leather formed the latch. A stitched leather Kodak Brownie camera cover, a mouse trap and a baking tray – all handmade – are part of the collection. You Said It We need water not coal mines.

In March 2017, 87% of Queensland was classified as in-drought, the highest ever recorded. In February, the Climate Council reported that it expects the time Australia spends in drought to increase, thanks to climate change. Despite Cyclone Debbie, a large part of Queensland was bypassed, a part that continues to desperately need rain. It affects farms, graziers, tourism, businesses and people. The Queensland Government needs to lift its game in these drought affected areas. Yet here we have the Palazczuk Government taking advantage of the short term disruption and drenching of Cyclone Debbie to declare that the Adani mine can have unlimited access to groundwater for the next 60 years. Adani has now announced that it is seeking to build a dam to capture additional surface water to wash its dirty coal. The continued humbug surrounding this monstrous uneconomic and environmentally hostile white elephant boggles the mind. For the good of Queensland, notwithstanding the promise of jobs, and it is suspected that many of these will be taken by FIFO workers from India on 457 visas, it is time to stop this Adani nonsense in its tracks, and start building drought alleviating infrastructure to benefit Queensland, not the multibillion Adani CONglomerate. Please keep dogs on-leash

I would just like to ask anyone who walks their dog/s in the area of Beerwah Hotel and the streets behind it, both in the morning and at night, could you please keep your dogs on leash. I am tired of my cat (who stays in my yard ) being chased and scared for her life. I am also tired of my dog and all the others barking for 20 minutes on end when dog walkers who have no control over their dogs allow their pets to enter other people’s yards and gardens. I am tired of being home and seeing council dog catcher vans sitting outside my house because people keep complaining about my dog and the others in my street because they bark at your dog that is off-leash. Please, I beg of you to be responsible for your dog and make sure your dog is kept on leash as I don't want to lose my family member (who is quiet and good any other time). Name supplied Beerwah

Re: Adani mine

I read Greg Newton’s letter (GC&M News April 5) where he wrote that the mine will employ 10,000 workers and spend $21 billion over the 30 years. Who is telling the truth? Eight years ago Labor and Adani Mines said they only need 1,400 workers. Now it is 10,000 workers – that’s a big jump. The present Queensland Labor government under Annastacia Palaszczuk said at the start of her term they will not give a dollar towards the mine’s infrastructure. Now the Carmichael mine wants the State Government to help pay for their rail line and the building of their harbour. Information comes from the media. What is the truth or what are lies? After 30 years of coal mining there will be a large hole of up to 10,000 hectares. What happens to the land and underground waterways that would have been destroyed? Re: Adani mine

Adani is a solar believer too. I am not surprised at Greg Newton's use of the discredited figure of 10,000 when referring to jobs 'created' by the biggest open cut of the Nation, that Carbuncle Mine (GC&M News April 5). His fact-checking is as substandard as the coal from the Carmichael mine. A seasoned political operator such as himself would have heard that the mine's own expert put the figure at 1,464 jobs (over the 60-year onslaught of destruction – the so-called 'life' of this mine). Perhaps the $50,000 or so received by the LNP from Adani corrupted Greg's hearing? Because of the jobs destroyed in other sectors – agriculture, tourism, etc – and workers poached from other places, there are very few new jobs. And as for Greg's laughable claims about renewable energy and South Australia being left in "the dark", even Adani has a 150+ MW solar farm planned near Moranbah, Queensland. The construction would create up to 350 jobs, with five full-time staff then operating the solar farm. “The solar projects are part of Adani’s balanced approach to power generation", according to a company statement. Let's have 20 of those projects please, owned by people who don't abuse tax-havens – yeah! Please Greg, try a little balance yourself, so we can all work together to protect our climate, our reef, our biodiversity and our children. Jenny Fitzgibbon Maleny

Adani mine a positive thing? Are you kidding me? If people worked less for more worthy causes we wouldn't need another $21 billion worth of fossil fuels ripped out of the earth along with the workforce that are ready to put themselves low enough to see the root of that cause which is just more material wealth and raping of the Earth. It's a rough game and somebody needs to put their foot down. Music always helps inspire people. Snakes? Problems? Go knocking. There are plenty of people hunting work and looking to donate their time to worthy causes. If there is a farm and it is overgrown maybe they need help. There could even be money in that for grandchildren or children or whoever is willing to put the work in. Take problems and create positive opportunities. Positivity is the attitude one must take towards negativity. Ignoring negativity is ignorance. The rewards come when the problems are solved. Then comes the celebration. Love and respect. I live on North Maleny road. I moved back to Maleny after some years only to find the town has become overrun by degenerates who care nothing for the beauty of Hinterland living. The motorcycles and the rednecks. Rednecks and motorcycles. It's loud and abusive. It hurts people. You hurt people they make noise. If a car made as much noise as these bikes the police would pull them up in most normal situations, however rare those are these days. I'm no hater, but something needs to change. I guess that is just life. I like to hope and push for more. If your machine is loud. Take it out somewhere nobody can hear you. Wildlife included. There is positive noise and negative noise. More positivity, please. Regarding Bald Knob, there have been recent reports of a large black cat sleeking about late at night on that part of the range. Robert Warren North Maleny

Telstra issues

The Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce invited people to voice their concerns and problems with their internet connections and mobile reception a couple of weeks ago. The idea is to gather the data, check which locations are most affected and then pass this information on to our Federal Member, Andrew Wal lace. He has assured us that he is ready to mak e a case with Telstra and to push for improvemen ts. Of course there are no guarantees, but if we don’t complain en masse, there is no way an indiv idual can make a difference. To date we have rece ived around 50 replies to our questionnaire but we need much more. Re: Adani mine

In Greg Newton’s letter (GC&M News April 5), he claimed that Ken Dyer missed the point. Mr Newton’s ‘point’ is that multinational investment provides jobs. My own feeling about the Adani mine is that, given the scientific consensus regarding climate change, now is the time to be moving away from nineteenthcentury industries of filth, destruction and waste, towards smart, clean, efficient alternatives that could soon be as big as Microsoft and Google have been in the IT revolution. The Australian economy is the twelfth largest in the world and we should be acting in a globally responsible fashion. Thank you, Brian Lewis, for your letter in the GC&M News on April 5, you put my thoughts into words. Your words are definitely not a whinge but true fact. I have lived in this beautiful Glasshouse Country area in excess of 40 years. I have done a lot of volunteer driving for a local organisation and have also seen drivers who don’t obey road rules and put people at risk. In my younger days I was taught “the red light at the top says you must stop – the green light below says you may go – the amber light in between says wait for the red or the green”. When I got my driver’s licence, cars had no blinkers so you had to use your hand to indicate which way you wanted to go. So appreciate your blinkers and use them and save lives. Re: Adani Mine

Gerry Muller (GC&M News April 12) states that break-even costs for the Carmichael Adani Coal Mine are $100 per tonne and the current average price of thermal coal is $40. Coal Industry sources estimate that production costs will be $50 to $60 a tonne and the Australian thermal coal price in March 2017 was $113 (not $40) a tonne with industry analysts predicting a gradual fall to $89 ending 2018. On these Coal Industry figures the Adani Coal Mine appears to be a viable proposition. The job numbers estimated by other anti-mining correspondents ignore the flow on effects of a mine this size with many engineering and mining supply company personnel providing the services needed for ongoing construction and maintenance. As far as the “dying” Great Barrier Reef goes, Gerry must be a ‘time traveller’. “Bleaching two years in a row for the first time ever” for a coral reef at least 6,000 years old – I don’t think so! The “Hughes” aerial survey study of the 2016 mass bleaching of the northern Great Barrier Reef ignored the fact that regional low tide levels measured by tide gauges showed an abnormal drop of up to 15cm caused by the El Niño ocean movement eastward. Solar irradiance would have been deadly to the top 15cm of the exposed coral and is very likely a major cause of the bleaching, but studies have shown that the unexposed coral can grow back as sea level normalises when the El Niño dissipates. El Niño is a climate phenomenon which has been known about for centuries and has nothing to do with rising CO2 levels. Sel Hopley Maleny

NBN Chronicles

Richard Giles (GC&M News April 5) states that for many, ADSL2 speeds are “quite adequate”. What he does not tell you is that ADSL2 is completely inadequate for streaming complex web applications, and hopeless for educational, medical and video conferencing purposes. We absolutely need nbn – the sooner, the better. Yes, there are speed problems in some quarters, but they are linked to the service providers. This is not an nbn issue. Nbn is a wholesaler. When choosing a plan over the nbn network from a service provider, you have to ask about the average speeds you are likely to experience during peak times. If they don't satisfy you, move to another reseller. Many nbn customers are extremely happy with the service. In the same newspaper Giles cites, The Australian, an article called ‘The reality of the NBN’ by Alan Kohler, relates a typical nbn scenario: an Optus nbn customer tells how she and her family "absolutely love" the nbn, saying that the family’s communication costs have fallen because the nbn package includes everything - limitless phone calls, including international, and limitless data. But most of all, she said, it’s the fantastic speed. “It’s increased the value of our house, no doubt about it. We’ll never again live where they haven’t got the NBN.” Movies come down in a few minutes and the internet works instantly and reliably, all the time. What conflict of interest is exhibited in the campaign opposing the Adani Mine which would offer job opportunities to so many people! While placing those job opportunities in limbo, at the same time, they put more jobs at risk with hysterical “save the reef” outcries, especially following the Cyclone Debbie destruction suffered by resorts in the Whitsunday Tourism region; and yet The Greens suggest that tourism is the alternative industry to mining and all the other farming activities which are so important to the Queensland economy. The Greens solution to un-employment and Queensland’s needs for infrastructure and services is to offer more money to sectors of the community who are already depending on welfare support. They will not support reliable coal-fired energy production and the resultant industry and job opportunities because of CO2 emissions. At the same time CO2 is known to be such a vital benefit to plant growth. 2017 Glass House Small Business Awards Following on from the success of the inaugural ‘Glassys’, local Member of Parliament Andrew Powell is organising the second annual Glass House Small Business Awards to coincide with Queensland Small Business Week in May. “In Glass House we are fortunate to have over 20 unique townships and each one of these has a varying amount of small family-owned businesses that survive solely on the support of their local community,” Andrew said. “Because I understand how tough they do it, I initially created these awards as a way to publicly recognise their service and give them some much-needed promotion. “These awards will highlight what they are doing best and will remind our larger community that shopping local will stimulate economic growth and local employment opportunities. Free breast cancer screening in Maleny Women on the Blackall Range are urged to make a date with BreastScreen Queensland – their mobile van has set up in the Maleny Hospital Grounds at Bean Street, Maleny until May 8. Breast Cancer is a serious illness that affects about one in eight Queensland women at some stage in their lifetime. Kelly Hart, Health Promotion Officer for BreastScreen Queensland Sunshine Coast Service, said regular, two-yearly breast cancer screening was the best way to detect breast cancer early, well before you or your doctor could feel anything. “Women aged 50 to 74 are strongly encouraged to participate in the BreastScreen Program, as the risk of developing breast cancer increases as a woman ages,” Ms Hart said. “BreastScreen Queensland provides free breastscreening to women aged 40 years and over.” BreastScreen Queensland Services are the only nationally-accredited breast cancer screening services in Queensland. The mobile van has the same state-of-the-art equipment as the permanent sites. Appointments are one-on-one with specially trained female health professionals and breastscreens are read independently by two doctors.

The Sunshine Coast Choral society draws singers from all over the Sunshine Coast, including our own Gill Davies, Jenny Glasshouse Country. See ‘Uruzgan’ and meet the artist Maleny Arts Council (MAC) aims to give its audience a total theatre experience, Image courtesy of Defence Dep and the next event will be just that. artment Fred Smith’s ‘The Dust of Uruzgan’ is an account, in story and song, of an official visit to the Afghanistan war, and those who were there and those who were not will be fascinated by this highly-praised presentation, and especially keen to talk to Fred after the show. Fred Smith is a popular Australian singer songwriter based in Canberra, and in 2009 the Australian government sent him into the war zone to build relationships with tribal leaders in order to improve cooperation between the local community and the coalition forces. He spent 18 months in the Uruzgan province giving concerts and talking to the people and the soldiers on active service. The result was a collection of powerful songs about his experiences, ‘The Dust of Uruzgan’, that won featured reviews and front pages in the Australian national papers. He will bring those stories to Maleny at 2pm on Sunday May 7, and his presentation includes background film of the country and its peoples at war. “Speaking to this remarkable man will be almost as good as the concert, and that is very good indeed,” said Maleny Arts Council program director Peter Lavery. “The audience will have the opportunity of chatting informally with Fred on the deck after the show. The bar will be open and we will be providing substantial nibbles, so you can spend more time discussing the show with your friends and with the artist.” John Huxley of the Sydney Morning Herald said in his review, “The music of Fred Smith comes straight from the front line…raw, ribald, but also capable of moving grown men to tears.” And in the same paper, Bruce Elder described Fred Smith as “an exceptional songwriter and certainly the equal of Bogle, Walker and Schumann”. Arts Portfolio Councillor Rick Baberowski said that the art prize and finalist exhibition encourage local artists to produce new works, and “this can be an important step in developing an artist’s body of work and reputation”. Friends of the Caloundra Regional Gallery president Marie Piggott said, “This year, thanks to support from our wonderful sponsors, we have been are able to increase the individual prizes from $1,000 to $1,500 each for Best Oil or Acrylic, Best Watercolour, Best Mixed/Other Medium and Best Three-Dimensional.” Also open for entries is the Holmes Acquisitive Art Prize for Excellence in Realistic Australian Birdlife, the only bird art prize in Australia. Living on the hedge

With Spencer and Karen Shaw Hedges are a useful and attractive way of defining boundaries, providing privacy and scenic amenity, and they great for the wildlife! What we tend to think of as a traditional hedge is a one-species planting of the same tough, readily pruned, bushy to the ground species that is basically a living fence and not much more than that. However this is a relatively recent invention of our production line landscaping and the hedges of old contained a diverse range of species and resources for both humans and wildlife. Some of the great local plants for creating hedges include most of our Lillypillys and Myrtles such as Creek Lillypilly - Acmena smithii, Bolwarra – Eupomatia laurina, Lemon Scented Myrtle – Backhousia citriodora, Blue Lillypilly - Syzygium oleosum, Silky Myrtle - Decaspermum humile, and Scrub Cherry - Syzygium australe (dwarf forms). However, there are so many more – like Common Aspen Acronychia oblongifolia, Muttonwood Myrsine variabilis, White Alder Callicoma serratifolia, Blueberry Ash Elaeocarpus reticulatus, Velvet Leaf Callicarpa pedunculata and Sweet Pittosporum Pittosporum undulatum just for starters! If you want prickles too to keep things in or out, then you just can’t go past Orange Boxthorn Pittosporum minutiflorum, but also try Native Holly Alchornea ilicifolia, Native Capers Capparis spp. and Native Currant Carissa ovata. Hedge plants are great for you and the environment, privacy and beauty. So don’t beat around the bush and get hedging!

The State Government has recently launched a safety campaign to better protect Queenslanders against electrical shock in their homes. Industrial Relations Minister Grace Grace said the ‘One safety switch may not be enough’ campaign encourages Queenslanders to install safety switches on every circuit. “Safety switches save lives – it’s that simple,” Ms Grace said. “Unlike circuit breakers which protect equipment, safety switches help protect us, our family and anyone visiting our home from potentially fatal electric shock. “Safety switches turn off the power in a fraction of a second when leakage of current is detected. “This can happen if there’s a faulty power point or electrical appliance, or you accidentally hit a live cable while drilling into a wall or gardening. “Without a safety switch protecting you on that circuit, you and your family are potentially at risk.” Safety switches have been a mandatory requirement for power and lighting circuits in new homes, rentals and older homes as they’re sold for a few years now. But the risk is still there on other circuits. “A safety switch can only protect you if it’s fitted to the circuit that’s been damaged, whether it’s for air conditioning, the stove, hot water, or the pool,” Ms Grace said. “And that’s the reason we are launching this campaign – to get the message out that one safety switch may not be enough. “Six deaths in Queensland homes over recent years would have been prevented had a safety switch been fitted to all circuits – six people who would still be alive today but for the lack of a simple, inexpensive safety device. “So next time you get electrical work done, why not get the electrician to put in some extra safety switches. They aren’t expensive at all, and if the sparkie is already out at your place, you won’t pay an additional call out fee. “It’s well worth it for the added protection for you and your family.” The online and social media campaign includes a Facebook competition and free advice from electrical safety experts, and will run for a month. Tips for autumn lawn care Fertilising

• If your sweet pea seedlings are looking a little worse for wear due to all the rain, it’s not too late to replace them with new ones – try the dwarfing varieties. • Grass growth will be starting to slow down now but weeds still grow. Keep on top of weeds, especially bindi-eye, clover and tropical chickweed. • Bare rooted roses will be in stores now but don’t rush in and buy, as the optimum time is the end of next month. • Gingers and heliconias that have finished flowering can be cut back now, leaving the new growth for next seasons flowering display. • Apply a light dusting of lime to bare veggie beds. Don’t apply fertliser at the same time, as the lime reacts with the nitrogen creating ammonia gas. • Plant leafy coriander plants now. We have only just had the joy and privilege again of standing by the cross of Jesus and the empty grave of Easter Day. But to fully comprehend the full meaning, we recognise and respond to Jesus’ resurrection in the company of other people; no private experience. We know about the two closed-room meetings in Jerusalem on successive Sundays – first with thirteen and then with eleven. St Paul also cites the experience of the resurrection occurring among companies of friends – the twelve, the "more than five hundred” and “all the apostles” (1 Corinthians 15:5-7). There were two at the Emmaus supper, the seven on the Galilean beach, Matthew’s two Marys, Mark’s three women bringing embalming spices to the tomb, and Luke’s four-plus women on their way to care for Jesus’ body. St Paul submitted to the company and wisdom of others when it came to reports of Jesus’ resurrection. In his Corinthian letter he makes a reference to this and refuses to put himself on a par with these resurrection witnesses, describing himself as bringing up the rear and disclaiming any position. He even calls himself a freak (1 Cor. 15:8-9). This is the ultimate in selfdisparagement. What emerges as significant in all of this, is

that first-hand participation in the resurrection of Jesus did not create a spiritual elite of experts. There were no resurrection experts, no resurrection professionals. In this Pauline text in the four Gospel stories that have come down to us, we can detect no attempt to close ranks and exclude anyone. The “some” who doubted on the Galilean mountain received the same authorised apostolic commission as the others. Cautious Thomas, holding off and keeping his distance from risk or foolishness, was welcomed into the resurrection circle. Jesus’ scornful unbelieving brother James was graciously included. Jesus’ resurrection offers us an open door. Everyone has easy and ready access to this company of resurrection friends, among whom there is no rank or privilege. With then Christ’s victory over death now behind us, we can go forward with this Easter faith as we live our daily lives.

Thursday April 13 we played Stableford with 56 players. For some added "interest" we played with just 3 clubs and a putter in the bag. Bit of fun!! Div1 winner was Marie Goyder on 38pts with R/up Vikki Bartel 35pts. Div2 Winner was Cath Cherry 39pts, R/ up Lyn Nichols 37pts. (Who needs 13 clubs!) Contributed by Neil Lovett Two of our players, Donna Manning and Ken Barker, decided to test their mettle against good players from the whole state and beyond in an event at the Stephens Croquet Club in Brisbane. While neither finished among the prizes, they won some games and finished on the heels of their opponents in others. In Pennants both of our teams have had a match. In Lochwood Shield we played Noosa. Scores were (our players named first) Nick Cram 12 John Olsen 26, Ken 18 Brian Rudd 16, Vince Carbery and Donna 14 John and Brian 16, giving Noosa the victory 2-1. In the other Sunshine Coast Region Pennant competition, the Bray Shield, we played Coolum. The results were: Kath Smith 17 George Oliver 19, Sarah Widin 17 Wade Hart 21, and Kath and Sarah 11 Heather Smith and Wade 18. Coolum won 3-0. At home our social games have continued. Newcomers Carol Johnson and Yve Clark played a modified game, with Carol squeezing in 7-5, Vince beat Ken, coming from behind with a strong finish for 18-16, Ted Gardner and Kath downed Frances Harper 9-7, Donna won against Kath 14-3, Ken 8 breezed away from comparative novice John Crofts 2, Sarah achieved the maximum score of 26 in beating Sally Adams 6, and Nick also achieved 26 in overcoming Kath 8. That game was over so quickly that Vince and Kath had time for a short handicap singles, which Kath won 12-7. Our lawns (which are in very good condition in this autumn weather) are in the Maleny Showgrounds on Stanley River Road. Ably led by Jani Kroyherr, the team of Anthony, Wayne, Frank (Wayne's mate), Leigh Anne (Jane’s mate) and Jane had a comfortable 10 sets to 2 victory (69 games to 44) in ideal tennis conditions. The final result probably flattered the Wonders as there was some excellent close-fought tennis through the afternoon. The team now look forward to their next outing against the reigning premiers, Yandina, where they will need to bring their AAA game to the table. Sport Young local sporting champions recognised

Athletics competitor 17-year-old Hayden Bonato and 13-year-old cricketer Van McNeilly, both of Glass House Mountains, were two of the 23 elite young sportsmen and women on the Sunshine Coast recognised by the Federal Government for their hard work and excellence through the award of Local Sporting Champions grants. The 23 locals, aged 12-18, and their families, recently gathered at the office of local Federal Member Andrew Wallace in their sports uniforms for a special award ceremony. “From Athletics to Zumba, staying fit and active throughout our lives is really important for our health and well-being. It is particularly essential when we are young,” Mr Wallace said. “I am delighted that the Federal Government recognises this achievement with the Local Sporting Champions grant, and was truly inspired by meeting all these young people to give them their awards.” The Local Sporting Champions program is a Federal Government initiative which provides funding assistance to young sportsmen and women who are participating in a state, national or international sporting competition. The Local Sporting Champions grant can contribute towards the cost of travel, accommodation, equipment and/or uniforms for the nominated sporting competition.
