ell what an amazing few days of weather we have had! Some of the photos of local flooding I have seen of a number of locations are nothing short of astounding! From the sound of the report compiled by our Glass House Mountains SES they were kept on their toes, and were ably assisted by the Beerwah and Landsborough Rural Fire Brigades. Fortunately the 140 calls for assistance, clearly appreciated our local dedicated volunteers, who were there to help. Fortunately for us, our home was never in any risk of being flooded, for which I am thankful – however I did have a few sleepless nights. While I love lying in bed listening to the sound of the rain coming down, I have now decided I am not such a fan of the Striped Marsh Frog and the delightful – tok … tok …. tok…tok…tok cry that they make all night long!! Local News Cyclone Marcia touches Glasshouse Country SES Report by Dave Erbacher The recent effects of Cyclone Marcia produced in excess of 500mm (20 inches in the old scale) of rain over the four day period. Our SES Group had tremendous response from our members in turning out on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Over 140 calls for assistance were received. Naturally the bulk of the calls were for sand bags and tarpaulins. Many residents responded to the call to be prepared and we had a busy period prior to the major rain fall but then when that continuous rain came, many more requests were made. Our Group, with assistance from the Beerwah and Landsborough Rural Fire Brigades at times, managed to have at least 10 persons on hand at any time each day. The number of sand bags issued is not known, but over 12 metres of sand was consumed. There were several significant issues to note. We had no calls for flooded gutters. Most people contacted were very appreciative of our efforts and most even assisted at times in filling sand bags.

Several significant cash donations were received and we must thank Vianta Coffee Shop at 70 Simpson Street for donating hamburgers and sandwiches for 15 workers on Saturday. In addition the Fruit Barn (opposite the Pineapple Patch) donated a large tray of cut cold mixed fruit as well as whole fruit. The flood effort was climaxed with a crew turning out to assist, if required, for the search for the two lost swimmers near the primary school. Group Leader, Robert Barry stated that he was very impressed with the members of the community that offered help to fill their own sand bags and to help their neighbours. He thanks all our members and members of the Rural Fire Brigades for a fantastic prolonged effort over the three days of torrential rain.

Last year's Rural Ambassador Morgan Winter, a hairdresser from Witta, would agree. "It has been great for my confidence and being able to talk to people about what inspired me to join," she said. "I did not grow up on a property but it was great to meet like-minded people. I wanted to learn more about rural life and share that awareness with others." Last year’s Miss Showgirl Kirsten Grigor said the opportunity enabled her to personally grow at the tender age of 21 years. "I have learned so much about agriculture and all aspects of the show," said Kirsten. "It has been fundamental in developing my skills in public speaking, interviewing and conversing with people of all ages. "I would highly recommend it to anyone," said Kirsten. New photoelectric smoke alarm laws a step closer By Davina Illing Beerwah smoke alarm advocate Adrian Butler has welcomed a recent Queensland Coroner’s recommendation to introduce new laws to ensure photoelectric smoke alarms be made mandatory in all new homes and rentals across the state. Adrian, chairman of the World Fire Safety Foundation, said there were two types of smoke alarms, ionisation and photoelectric. “Ionisation smoke alarms are in most (Queensland) homes. Photoelectric smoke detectors are also in most commercial buildings,” he said. “Standards Australia has formally acknowledged that the existing Australian Smoke Alarm Standard is flawed,” he added. He said the current Smoke Alarm Standard allowed ionisation alarms to be certified as safe despite CSIRO scientific test data which shows they do not activate in the early smouldering stage of a fire until two to three times the maximum limit set for photoelectric alarms. Photoelectric smoke alarms do exactly what consumers expect them to do - they detect visible smoke. “As a result, Standards Australia amended the Australian Smoke Alarm Standard covering residential dwellings in 2008. However, the Australian Building Codes Board (ABCB) has refused to adopt the amended standard into legislation,” Adrian said. “The ABCB approved the revised standard for commercial buildings in 2004 which
mandated photoelectric smoke detectors in new commercial buildings but they have not yet adopted the amended standard for residential buildings.” Adrian said the Australasian Fire and Emergency Service Authorities Council was the peak representative body of all Australasian fire brigades. In 2006 it released a report stating that all homes be fitted with photoelectric smoke alarms and that ‘ionisation smoke alarms may not operate in time to alert occupants early enough to escape from smouldering fires’. “This was demonstrated during a televised ‘60 Minutes’ exposé, ‘The Alarming Truth’ late last year,” he said. Adrian said that despite the ionisation smoke alarms’ inability to detect fire in the early smouldering stage, they had an unacceptably high false alarm rate. “Every night approximately 6 million Australians will go to sleep in a home where an ionisation smoke alarm has been disconnected due to incessant false alarms. Photoelectric smoke alarms do not have the same false alarm problem, he said, so ionisation alarms should be banned on the false alarm issue alone. “People turn them off because they keep alarming when cooking and they naturally become annoyed by this,” he said. “What makes them so insidious is that they lulled people into a false sense of security by going off when cooking.” Adrian said in the types of fires that commonly kill
are the smouldering type of fires that occur when you are asleep. These types of fires are low heat and usually do not generate the invisible particles that activate an ionisation alarm. Adrian explained that ionisation smoke alarms detect invisible particles from the red hot heating elements from cooking. “Rarely do people die from kitchen fires but rather from fires started by electrical household items which generally begin as a low-heat, slow smouldering fire. “Therefore, ionisation smoke alarms will generally not activate in the early stages of a household fire - not until the fire finally bursts into flame when it is often for too late for occupants to safely escape. “That is why all Australian fire brigades and most fire safety organisations now strongly recommend photoelectric alarms,” he said. “The Queensland Coroner recently recommended, that as a minimum in all areas of a building where people sleep, approved (photoelectric) smoke alarms are installed.” “We are hoping the Queensland Coroner’s recommendations becomes a reality, through continued lobbying,” said Adrian. Black spots get green light In April last year, Federal MP for Fisher Mal Brough hosted a forum at the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club to take feedback on local mobile phone reception ‘black spots’. The outcomes were then fed into the Commonwealth Government’s ‘Mobile Black Spot Programme’, with the view to assessing local problem areas for priority funding to improve reception. According to Mr Brough, the Mobile Black Spot Programme – a $100 million national initiative – is progressing as planned with telecommunication providers currently developing their proposals which they will submit to Government by April. In the Fisher electorate, 32 locations of poor mobile reception across the hinterland were nominated for assessment. “The reported locations, including those nominated in the electorate of Fisher, have been included in a database that has been shared with mobile network operators and infrastructure providers to assist them in preparing funding proposals for the programme,” said Mr Brough. From the database, Telstra, Optus, Vodafone and other telecommunication parties can start to prepare their black spot funding proposals, which must be lodged by April.” For each location, the applicant will need to specify the funding it seeks from the government, the amount it is contributing, and funding from any other sources. “The applicants will also need to provide information about the coverage benefits the base station will offer, for example the area in square kilometres, to receive new coverage from the base station. “The Government will consider all the proposals and choose the base stations to receive funding. This may include a mix of base stations from different applicants. The process is designed to maximise competition in two ways – between locations, and between bidders – to get as many new base stations as possible for the Government’s investment.” It is expected that successful applicants and locations will be announced in the first half of this year, with the first base stations to begin rolling out in the second half of this year. Rocky road ahead for Sh#tbox rally entrant By Lea Parkes Keep your eye out in the coming months and you might just see this ‘interesting painted up’ ute that is being prepared for this year’s Sh#tbox rally. Local Glass House Mountains father and daughter entrants Steve and Bronwyn Graves team ‘Still Thinkin’ have done a paint job on their Ford ute and have christened her the ‘Rock’ett’. Steve said they painted up the car to look like a stone wall and their plan is to put the name of everyone who donates to the Cancer Council, through their team, onto one of these rocks. “Hopefully we run out of rocks!” he said. Steve and Bronwyn have raised $2,175.00 towards their $4,000.00 target to enter the race, with a few more fundraisers to complete. “This year’s rally travels from Canberra to Townsville via the Birdsville Track from May 9 -15 and we are pretty excited as we have been put into a ‘buddy group’ with James Freeman who is the organiser of the Rally,” Steve said.

It could be going for a walk together, playing board games or just an hour or two without the TV on where you talk as a family. I know in my household we have a rule that no phones are allowed at the dinner table and the TV is switched off so we can talk and communicate without any distractions. Give it a try! Good luck! Beerwah’s new fresh fruit family Marco and Debbie Circelli and their family opened the Beerwah store in December last year, just in time for the Christmas rush. They offer a spacious, modern shop, but still with that all important friendly, country feel. Completing the team are Cassie, Kelly, Monique, Karlee and Jude. This time it is a lady with lovely long locks, her name is Liz Crema, and she lives in Glass House Mountains. Liz is aware of the great work undertaken by the Leukaemia Foundation who have done fantastic work over the years helping patients with blood cancers, and their families, and also helping fund research projects to find cures and better treatments. In 2009 Liz was diagnosed with a Myeloproliferative Neoplasm (MPN) which is a group of rare chronic blood cancers. (Myelo = bone marrow, proliferative = reproduces quickly, neoplasm = new cells). Liz said the MPN she was diagnosed with was called Essential Thrombocythaemia. “This means my bone marrow made too many platelets,” she said. “Then in 2012, my diagnosis progressed to Polycythaemia Vera, which means my bone

HQPlantations will soon be commencing hazard reduction burning of pine plantations in the general areas of Beerburrum, Elimbah, Beerwah, Glass House, Landsborough, Toorbul, Woodford and Bribie Island. The burns are part of an ongoing campaign to protect adjacent communities and the plantation assets from potential wildfires and arson activity. HQPlantations Beerburrum Fire Protection Co-Ordinator Mick Burrow said recent rain, and the beginning of cooler temperatures and lighter winds, will allow HQPlantations to commence the hazard reduction burning program. “Annual summer growth of underbrush requires that we undertake hazard reduction burning to reduce the risk of wildfires in the hotter months when fires would burn more intensely,” Mr Burrow said.
HQPlantations burning program would commence in February, continuing through to the end of July, with April and May being the peak of the burn period. The timing and frequency of hazard reduction burns is dependent on weather conditions, and while every attempt would be made to minimise smoke inconvenience to residents and motorists, it would remain dependant on these favourable weather conditions. Mr Burrow will continue to inform the public and neighbours when managed hazard reduction burning is planned, however if members of the public are concerned about fires in, or threatening plantation forests, they should contact 000 to arrange the appropriate response. Love at first sight for new deck Valentine’s Day marked a special occasion for Club Glass House with the official opening of the newly renovated deck. Thanks to the expertise of John McSwain along with his work force, Denis Steer, Doug Kippen, Dave Clarke, Graham Young, Graham Anstis and Dennis Hume, the deck was brought to life over a period of three weeks in what was the hottest part of the year. Life member John McSwain was given the task of officially opening the deck and was pleasantly surprised when he unveiled the plaque to find that the deck had been named in his honor. The
renovations to the deck were funded by club raffles run by Denis Steer and Doug Kippen every Friday night and Sunday lunch and the generous support of club members. Club Committee and members enjoyed canapés and champagne to mark this special occasion, with some staying on to enjoy the special Table d’ Hote menu prepared by cook MJ for our Valentine diners. The three course meal was scrumptious and thoroughly enjoyed by all the diners with all the ladies taking home chocolate roses.

Memorial walk for Maleny Hospital

The Maleny Hospital Auxiliary, in conjunction with the Maleny Soldiers Memorial Hospital, has received a grant of $59,000 to build a Memorial Walk in the hospital grounds. The Lion's Club presented the Auxiliary with a cheque during the meeting to supplement the grant awarded by the Federal Government to the Auxiliary for their WW1 Memorial Walk project. 20

Work has begun on the walk which consists of a path winding through a treed area on the perimeter of the hospital grounds with a diversion to a quiet reflective area with seats and gardens under an arbor. At the end of the pathway, in a circular sandstone paved area, stand five large memorial stones engraved with symbols and plaques, commemorating the servicemen and women who enlisted from the district. The entrance will be marked by sandstone pillars and post and rail fence reflecting the rural heritage of Maleny. The entire walk will be enhanced by plants and shrubs. The project is sponsored by the Department of Veteran Affairs under the Australian Government’s Anzac Centenary Local Grant Programme. Helicopter patrols keep transmission lines safe Helicopter patrols in the South East Queensland region over coming weeks will help Powerlink Queensland maintain the reliability and safety of its high voltage electricity network. As part of their commitment to raising public awareness about health issues that may be of benefit to their customers, Landsborough Chemist is planning to hold a pharmacy health promotion to highlight the issue of continence health. As part of their promotion, the pharmacy will be seeking to educate customers about continence health as well as offering a free screening questionnaire to assist and identify customers who may need further attention. The pharmacy will also be offering professional advice during the promotion, and if required, referrals to appropriate medical practitioners. The key message for everyone is that incontinence in most cases can be preventable and is treatable. With this in mind, the Landsborough Chemist will be urging customers both male and female to fill out the quick screening questionnaire. Should it return a positive result, then book an appointment with their specialist physiotherapist who will be visiting the pharmacy, for further discussion. The health promotion seeks to raise awareness, educate and then bring to people’s attention that good solutions do exist. During the week, there will be an education booth
set up inside the Pharmacy along with a video display that will provide further information for customers. Friendly staff will be on hand to happily answer any questions. There will also be a private area for further discussion and this will also serve as a spot for customers to meet with the visiting physio. On Thursday, March 12, physiotherapist Ellie Douse, who specialises in continence issues, will be in store from 11.00am onwards and available for customer consultation. Studies suggest that one in three women who have had babies may experience continence issues. So it is important to raise awareness particularly among women, of the need to do pelvic floor muscle exercises several times a day, ideally during and after pregnancy. Clinical studies have shown pelvic floor muscle exercises could prevent and effectively treat pre and postnatal women if performed correctly as part of a daily routine. Introducing Bushie Maleny Neighbourhood Centre has over 50 volunteers but a man by the name of ‘Bushy’, lends a certain character. Bushy says he works on the lawns and edges to, “make Maleny Neighbourhood Centre look as good on the outside as the people who are inside it!” Bushy has amazing skills with lawns and maintenance and is a big help around the Centre. Bushy is very pleased with the help and friendship he has been offered at Maleny Neighbourhood Centre and compares our Centre to others he has experienced. “I went to a neighbourhood centre down south but there was no-one there. It was like a void. I waited around to see if someone would appear. There were no seats and no water and nowhere to get a cuppa. I felt so unwelcome, I took off,” he said. Bushy who has been travelling all his life, says that Maleny Neighbourhood Centre is “a lovely place.” He’s had many jobs and has worked in the air force, as a pilot, an inventor, a groundsman, a landscaper, a heavy vehicle driver and is overall, a survivalist. Bushy has two daughters and has come to Maleny to pursue his passion, Australian heritage art. Bushy has art for sale at Holden’s Gallery. ‘Good to Great’
By Mike Turner (Bass player for the Superdads) We are well and truly into the New Year. I hope you and your family have had a great start to 2015. For this month’s Dad Talk column I thought I’d mention a fantastic course that our lead singer Brendan has been running with a bunch of us local dads. The course is called ‘Good 2 Great’ and is produced by an organisation called ‘Dads 4 Kids’. I have been going along to learn as much as I can. I’m obviously very biased (Brendan is a mate and I am in the band with him) but the course has been really good. It’s very ‘blokey’ and practical which is great! We’re up to week five now of the 10 week course. Each week there is a different focus. If you’re like me - you hate going to group things where they do ‘team-building games’ and other nauseating get-to-know-you type activities. But thankfully Brendan hasn’t done any of that - we have looked at stuff like: how to connect with your kids when you are busy with work, improving your relationship with your wife/partner (sex, romance, expectations with household jobs etc), eating right, managing stress… it’s pretty cool! The format is – we rock up and watch a DVD, have a bit of a talk about what we thought and then go home. We do get homework though (I know, I know) but this is good homework… Anyway, I wanted to encourage you guys that if you’re interested in improving things at home – flick us an email via the website www. superdads.com.au and we can let you know when the next ‘Good 2 Great’ course in happening. By Sonia Clark On March 10, The Black Swan School of Dance proudly celebrates its third year of business in Landsborough. To mark this occasion, the school will be offering free dance workshops at their studio for the young and young at heart on Saturday, March 7. The workshops will be split across three time slots: Juniors from 9.00am 10.30am (ages from six to 10), Intermediates 10.30am - 12.00noon (ages 11 to 17) and Adults 12.00noon until 1.30pm. All workshops that day are free of charge and are a great way to give those interested the chance to sample three different styles of dance during their hour and half lesson. Each time slot will feature Hip Hop, Contemporary and Jazz dance and everyone is welcome to attend. Miss Rebecca will be teaching the classes and has over 20 years experience in the dance industry and holds a diploma of dance arts. If you can’t make the free workshops, the dance school offers classes for all ages and skill levels - in all main dance genres. Having taught over 200 students over the last three years, Miss Rebecca has enjoyed bringing dance into the Landsborough community. The Black Swan School of Dance has supported a number of community and school events as well as bringing a high standard of dance to the local area. Along with providing fitness and fun, the dance school is registered with international association C.S.T.D (Commonwealth Society of Teachers of Dancing) so that the school can offer training to those students wishing to pursue a dancing career. Stories and rhymes – the building blocks for literacy
Reading aloud to your child from babyhood is the single most important activity you can do to help your child develop the skills they need to learn to read and write. The development of the brain is very rapid in the early years, and research shows that just 20 minutes a day of reading aloud to your child can help prepare them for school. Parents can reap the benefits of joining free storytelling and rhyme time sessions at Beerwah and Maleny Libraries each week. The weekly ‘Rhyme Time’ sessions are recommended for infants up to two years and include songs, rhymes and finger play. These are held on Thursday between 10.30am – 11.00am at Beerwah and on Friday from 9.30am – 10.00am at Maleny. Or if you have little ones up to five years of age, and are up for ‘Story time’ on Tuesdays, you can head to Beerwah from 10.30am – 11.00am and on Thursday at Maleny you can attend between 9.30am – 10.00am. These half hour sessions allow parents and toddlers the chance to have quality time together while building basic skills creating a strong foundation for success. Bust a move at the Blue Light Time to get excited kids and start busting out your best dance moves – the Beerwah Blue Light Disco is back for 2015! With three events planned throughout the year, the first disco will be held at Beerwah Community Hall on Friday, March 13 from 6.30pm until 9.00pm. These hugely popular events are run by Beerwah Blue Light / Caloundra Blue Light Committee - a not-for-profit organisation run by Queensland police officers and volunteer supervisors to provide fun underage community dance parties. The night will feature DJ Cool, with heaps of awesome prizes donated by local businesses as well as food and refreshments available. “The Beerwah Blue Light is now in its third year and continues to be very successful and popular with the local kids of all ages,” Community Liaison Police Officer Susan Lowndes says. “At our next event on Friday March 13, we hope to have over 200 in attendance.” The events are fully supervised by blue card holding volunteers (issued by the commission for children and young people and child guardian) and are a smoking, alcohol and drug free event.

School News New Student Leaders welcomed Contributed by Bronwyn Reid Beerwah State School held their student leader induction last week, with 21 enthusiastic Year 6 students being given the honour of being officially welcomed as 2015 Student Leaders. All students conducted themselves in an exemplary way at their special induction parade. Special guests Cr Rick Baberowski, and Police Officer Susan, were present to congratulate them all on their success. As part of their role, the students undertake in a number of leadership activities throughout the school year. Just one example of the extra-curricular activities open to the student leaders is on Steve Irwin Day. The student leaders partake in the school’s annual camp out, raising money and awareness for the legacy Steve left behind. Selection process was undertaken late last school year, between students, teachers and parents. Principal Janet Austen and the rest of the school look forward to working with the new student leaders in the weeks and months ahead.

Contributed by Kylie Merola On Monday, February 16, Landsborough State School conducted their 2015 Student Leaders Investiture Ceremony. Newly elected school captains, vice captains, house captains, class captains and student councillors were presented with their leadership badges at a special assembly in the school hall. These new leaders have been chosen following a detailed process involving speeches, interviews with a selection panel and a student vote. In their roles, the students will be entrusted to show leadership and be attentive to the interests of their fellow students and the school. Principal, Kristy Walton, conducted the ceremony and called each student leader to the stage individually to receive their badge and certificate. Students presented themselves with pride and dignity as each of their parents had the task of pinning the leadership badge on their child. During the ceremony, the new leaders were asked to pledge an oath of office to accept their responsibilities. The pledge is a reminder about their responsibilities as a leader and how they should carry out their duties. Following the induction ceremony, student leaders and their parents were invited to a celebratory morning tea. The day was a milestone few of them are likely to forget. The 2015 school captains are Lucy Taylor and Brennan Langridge-Lawson and vice captains are Sarah Alberts and Ryan Hall. The student council officer is Oliva Whan. Sports house captains are Riley Gattera, Skyler Mather, Georgia Wilson, Mikayla Morgan, Jasmine Field and Kaylee Negas. These students have a lot to live up to, but we know they will excel in their many leadership challenges and set a new benchmark for the future. We congratulate this team of dedicated and passionate new leaders and wish them all the best for the year ahead.

Miss Rebecca ties the knot
By Sonia Clark On Saturday, January 10, Miss Rebecca from the Black Swan School of Dance officially became Mrs Rebecca Willshire when she married her sweetheart of nearly two years, Steven. Meeting Steven through friends at a family function in April 2013, a spark was obviously there as they exchanged numbers, and soon after they arranged to meet up for a first date. Described as the ‘best first date ever!’ Rebecca explained that their evening consisted of a beautiful romantic dinner followed by a lovely walk along the beach where the conversations easily flowed as they talked into the night. Steven proposed to Rebecca on holidays at Venice Beach in L.A. organising a sunset picnic on the beach with her favourite coloured rose petals strewn around and a local musician playing her favourite song. The actual wedding took place at the Little White Wedding Church in Maleny which perfectly suited their elegant modern classic theme. One of the highlights from the day which all went so quickly – was for Rebecca to see the emotion on her future husband‘s face as she walked towards him down the aisle. Rebecca had three bridesmaids, with her best friend of over 13 years as maid of honour. Wearing a bespoke Australian made Elizabeth deVarga wedding gown, Rebecca described her dress as “amazing!” The classically elegant gown had beaded straps and was encrusted with pearls. The dress was made out of soft silk with a satin overlay, needless to say the bride looked absolutely radiant! The reception that followed was held at The Edge Mooloolaba. Marking a matrimonial milestone By Lea Parkes At GC&M News we often include classified ads for important milestones and my favourites are the wedding anniversaries, for 40, 50, or 60 years, and on some occasions even longer. What I love most is when the husbands come in and organise it as a surprise for their better half. They don’t always like to give you too much detail, but it is lovely to see just how proud they are of their achievement and these days it certainly is. One Glass House Mountains couple who last month celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary was pineapple farmers Margret and Rick Moffatt. We put a few questions to Margret about her wedding and the secret to wedded bliss. What was their wedding date? 22nd January 1955 Where did they get married? Nambour – Methodist Church with celebrations that followed at her sister Milly’s house. How did they meet? They met at the Beerwah Hotel – Margaret was a waitress in the dining room and Rick was pub regular there after work. What does Margret remember most about her wedding day? Getting prettied up in her older sister’s wedding frock, her brother gave her away, and the best part of all was walking down the aisle seeing a tall handsome man waiting for her. What does she think the secret is to staying married so long? Margret reckons it is simple – it is about true love, always calling one another ‘Love’, kissing each other goodbye in the morning, lunch and before bed, and the big one – not having any secrets. Does Margret have any advice for young couples getting married these days? When you make your vows, they are made to be kept. Her mum always told her kids – you make your bed, you lie in it (or in this case once you have made the commitment you stick with it).

A wedding crisis: reception awash By John Jennings All sorts of interesting things happen at weddings which guarantee there is something to talk about later on - maybe even at a 50th wedding anniversary. All happy couples have favourite stories to tell, beer can ring-pulls exchanged for wedding rings by the best man and so on. Who can ever forget the British film, Four Weddings and a Funeral? For one Hinterland couple, Jessica (Jess) Magarry of Glass House Mountains and Lachlan Downes of Buderim, the challenge was to urgently secure a suitable venue for their reception after driving rain ruined an outdoor setting for 80 guests at the bride’s parent’s property in Glass House Mountains. With the wedding ceremony previously set for 4.00pm at Sir Leslie Wilson Park in Dicky Beach, the Pelican Waters Golf Club came to the rescue offering their undercover terrace to the couple to help prevent anyone from getting ‘wet feet’. At 1.00pm on Friday, January 23, Jessica made the decision to relocate the reception festivities and a series of frantic phone calls began. Within an hour the Beerwah Community Centre was confirmed, security arranged and the decorations, food and drinks transferred in a mass transport effort from both family and friends. Re: Gloria Vogel’s letter, February 18
Gloria you should make your complaint regarding the state of the grass in Beerwah to your local councillor. I imagine that the contractor who is contracted by the SCC is not being supervised, and if he can get away with cutting at once a month intervals, then he is ripping off the ratepayers. If enough complaints are heard the contract will not be renewed when the time comes. Here in Landsborough (with the same weather patterns as Beerwah) our contractor does an incredible job in keeping the public areas beautifully maintained. My parents, who live in Mooloolah, also commend the work of their contractor in all the public areas. On the question of rubbish being dumped at the side of the road, and in charity bins, it speaks for itself when the de-amalgamated Noosa council's very first enactment was to restore kerbside pickup. Our local council has steadfastly refused to do this and it is no wonder that rubbish is dumped wherever it can be done without being seen. The cost of attending a recycle station is prohibitive to some and the elderly particularly, find it impossible to dispose of large items of furniture or replaced white goods. Again the ‘donating’ of this rubbish to charities and opshops is one way to dispose of rubbish free of charge. Then the charity has the chore of getting rid of it at their cost. With council elections not far off, let us put the current council on notice that we the ratepayers are not happy. Joanna Aitken Landsborough
I’m just amazed
I always read the ‘You Said it’ column and I’m amazed at some people’s take on things. For instance in the last issue a comment by Quentin Dunn about Labor’s ‘responsibility for the $85 billion deficit.’ Selective memory is at play here; let’s not forget the global recession and how the Labor government insulated the country from it. And yes that has to be paid for, the same as in other first world countries. We should be thankful, have you seen what’s happened in the USA, UK and Europe? If you missed it, massive national debt, countries virtually bankrupt, workers losing their homes,
businesses closing. In the scheme of things, the Liberals have governed during times of first world prosperity. We have yet to see them perform in a crisis situation. Then there’s Brian Stallworthy, a regular contributor, and whilst you may not agree with him he has the right to voice his opinion. In this circumstance I agree with him. As an older member of the community and verging on retirement, how do you think we feel when politicians tell us the pension we contributed to and earned is not an entitlement. Yet politicians are ‘entitled’ to exorbitant sums of money in the form of pensions, imported European cars and other expensive perks, all paid for out of the public purse. In addition to Mr Stallworthy’s comments about over-governing, how good would it be to clear a few spaces at the trough and spend the savings in supporting infrastructure, the health system and in particular increased support for the disabled? As for the Editor’s comment, I found it rude and unacceptable. You are supposed to be objective. That also applies to your comments about ‘Andrew’ … should you not address him as Mr Powell to reinforce your impartiality regarding local politicians? Not good practice to snipe at your readers. Beerwah centre and surroundings are magnificent now and being enjoyed by locals near and far. There is just one issue to be addressed – the pathway from IGA to Pinecamp Road in Beerwah. This pathway is used daily by shoppers old and young with prams / wheelchairs / electric scooters and others. All carrying their shopping bags / trollies and sadly there is no place to sit to ‘gather their breath’. Not all constituents can drive, some have epilepsy / mental disorders or are aged persons, so a wooden bench at the start and end of this pathway (under the trees) would earn you many brownie points in our local area. Please attend to this issue as soon as possible. I await your courteous reply for locals of Pinecamp Road / shoppers and visitors. Well it would seem that our local councillor must never travel on the roads around our little village. Recently the median strips and traffic island have been an utter disgrace, not to mention the actual present and imminent danger the long grass presents. Motorists have enough problems at this intersection, without having to contend with the added problems the long and untidy grass creates. It is virtually impossible to see a small vehicle travelling south on Steve Irwin Way toward the Reed Street intersection. You can’t tell me that I am the only one who can see the problems, so why are they not doing anything about them? Another area of concern is Old Gympie Road, when leaving Glass House past Cobb & Co, ever notice the flooding of the road in heavy rain? Well look in the drain on the right hand western side, half a tree and the rubbish tends to cause half of this flooding. It's about time our councillor got his act together and took a good hard look around the township and looked after Glass House Mountains or he might suffer a rather big shock come the next elections. Glass House Mountains village will never win the Tidy Towns Award whilst we have a local council member doing nothing for us. I mow my lawn every four days in the summer, why? Landsborough residents have told me that they are pleased with the trees recently added around north Landsborough as part of council’s street ‘forest’ project. The wetter weather has certainly helped them get well established while also providing the relatively new strand of Poinciana trees in Caloundra Street a great spurt of new growth.
Construction at Bankfoot House
I recently popped into the new building under construction at Bankfoot House. Despite the wet weather, the heritage levy-funded new interpretive building at Bankfoot House is progressing well and looks impressive. Construction of the building is pretty much complete with just some internal fit out and driveway work remaining before the final landscaping works commence. The proposed date for an official opening is June 3, when we can all celebrate a great council / community partnership that is creating a much improved heritage destination for our region.
Glasshouse District Park Planning Project underway
A project brief to commission a landscape architect to develop a concept design and development plan for the new Glasshouse District Park off Gardner and Page Streets will go out this week. The landscape concept report will include a site analysis, layout, pedestrian circulation, shade shelters, furniture and playground locations etc. It will also include sufficient information to inform preliminary costings and the results of a community consultation session to be held on site sometime in April. As this is one not to be missed, I will ensure that information is distributed to local residents closer to the time.

This is the first contribution from the Friends of Mary Cairncross Association (FMCA) and we are looking forward to letting folk know about our beautiful patch of rainforest and the happenings there. Some readers may not know the Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve in Maleny. It is a 54 hectare patch of subtropical rainforest gifted to the people of the shire in 1941 by Mary, Mabel and Elizabeth Thynne and named in honour of their mother. Today there is a walking track through the forest, the Thynne Education Centre staffed by our ever helpful volunteers, a large picnic area and a very popular café overlooking the Glass House Mountains (best coffee in Maleny!). FMCA is a group of people who care for the wellbeing of the forest and its potential for environmental education. Our main project last year was new signage identifying 21 of the trees along the track for visitors’ information. We also provided warm winter jackets for our volunteers – a happy vollie is a happy education centre. Recent walkers would have seen the bright blue fruit along the track from the Blue Quandong (Elaeocarpus grandis) and the large red fruit of the endangered Red Lilly Pilly (Syzygium hodgkinsoniae) a favourite with many animals and birds. They would also have heard the many birds calling, the low sounds of the Wompoo Fruit Dove and of course the ever present Green catbird with its cry like a baby.

The Tuan, also known as the Brush-tailed Phascogale, is a little marsupial carnivore similar to an Antechinus, but about four times bigger. It has a fluffy tail and when under duress, its tail hair stands on end so that it looks like a bottlebrush. Depending on how much tucker is around, they can range over a forest area of up to 100 ha and each individual will use many different tree hollows for shelter. So they need a lot of continuous forest with large hollow-bearing trees to support a population. Fortunately the Conondale National Park provides this habitat. On the Blackall Range forested land is much more fragmented, so the best way of ensuring enough habitat to support this species, is to connect up the fragments. This is particularly important for the Tuan because every year, the entire male population dies after a testosterone-fuelled mating frenzy. The future of the species in any district is reliant on the male offspring that result from that reproductive frenzy. If a drought or fire impacts seriously on their reproductive success in an isolated area of habitat, that seals the demise of that population. To prevent this scenario it is important that these habitat fragments are connected with broad wildlife corridors to more extensive forest areas so animals have a chance to move back into fragments of bush and populate them once again. When planning restoration on your own land, you might like to think about how you can connect up habitat with your neighbours or an adjacent reserve to ensure a future for Tuans and all our other wonderful wildlife. Glasshouse Country Ministers Fellowship Fr Kevin Smith - Catholic Church A close friend of mine who lives in Victoria has three children, the youngest of whom is his only son. For many years they have tried to spend a night or perhaps a weekend away together. Recently, my friend and his son, who is now 18, spent a weekend away on a walking trek along with some other dads and their sons. While it is a good opportunity for some quality conversation between these young men and their fathers I am sure just as much is gained from what is not said. These young adults are reassured in their manhood and that they are loved simply by the time spent together with their dads. Many Christians around the world last week commenced a 40 day period that we call Lent. This yearly experience is a time where we still do all that has to be done but within that we also try to take some ‘time out’. Prayer is that quiet time of reflection and listening. Fasting enables us to simplify what we think we need to survive and be less concerned about all that we consume. Giving to others, especially those in need is a tangible expression that I indeed share this planet with others whose struggles and hopes are very similar to my own, but they have so much less to overcome them. For some people there are some very spiritual moments during Lent but for most of us we just live our usual lives but in a different way. We try to spend some time away to enjoy the quiet. God can do a lot in the silence - even the silence of a tomb!

On Sunday, February 8, the Maleny Swimming Club ran its Annual Swimming Carnival which attracted swimmers from Kingaroy, Dalby, Pelican Waters, Nambour, Buderim, Cotton Tree, Kawana, Kandanga, and Burpengary. There were over 300 young swimmers and family members attending on the day. The Club Spirit award was won by the Pelican Waters Club, and the Treasure Hunt and Splash for Cash were just some of the fun events. Age Champions were: 10 years: Girls – Zoe Hurt Flinders, Boys – Tom Chapman Pelican Waters, 11 years: Girls – Lexie Guiver Pelican Waters, Boys – Lachlan Carter Kawana Waters, 12 years: Girls – Tahlea Corcoran Pelican Waters, Boys – Quinn Hurt Flinders, 13 years: Girls – Lucy Hawkins Kawana Waters, Boys – Eden Bason Cotton Tree, 14 years: Girls – Emily Poh Flinders, Boys – Ethan Paddison Cotton Tree, 15 years and over: Girls – Olivia Poulton Flinders, Boys – Lochlan Higgins Maleny. This swimming carnival is not only good for the Maleny Swimming Club but also for the wider Maleny and district community as it attracts many people to our area on such a beautiful day. It is a shame though, that the aquatic facilities we have to work with limit the Club’s capacity to run a competitive carnival, as the club has to cap the numbers of swimmers we can accept, and the type of events we can run. 194. Matches are played at Glasshouse Sports Club and the Glasshouse State School from 3.30pm onwards and are open to all ages and abilities. Remember that the season is until June, so make sure you are committed for the season. If you don't turn up for matches you are letting your team mate down or it could be your whole division. A fill-in player is available if you are unable to play one of your matches.
Brisbane Lions visit the Glasshouse Lions Contributed by Craig Bales As part of the Brisbane Lions community camp they sent three players to the Glasshouse Lions AFL club to hold a ‘kick to kick’ with interested kids from the region. Mitch Golby, Justin Clarke and Liam Dawson made the trip to Glasshouse and had skill sessions with the 60 kids as well as signing autographs. Afterwards, the Lions players then had a dinner with sponsors and volunteers from the club. A special thank you to Sam and Peta for cooking a lovely roast dinner as well as Graeme for helping the Lions with the games. With the 2015 AFL Season closing in fast, training has started on the small oval at the Landsborough Sports Complex on Tunnel Ridge Road, Landsborough. The season is due to start for the U11’s, 13’s, 17’s, 15 and 18’s girls on March 15. The opening carnival for the U8’s and U10’s is scheduled for March the 29.

We are looking to work as one group focusing on skills, and will break out into the individual teams as the numbers increase, moving towards the start of the season. Students from San Taekwondo in Beerwah and Maleny last week had the opportunity to train with the world renowned demonstration team the K-Tigers. The K-tigers are based in Korea and have performed at events including the world championships and even starred in music videos. Currently touring Australia to promote Korean culture and martial arts, they spent three days training with us in the Hinterland. They performed a spectacular show for members which mixed elements of dance, tricking and gymnastics with traditional martial arts. Kicking targets while performing flips several metres off the ground and hitting up to six targets in one jump were some of the highlights. Following the demonstrations, students had the opportunity to learn from the K-tigers who ran a lesson for the students helping with their patterns or poomsae and teaching some self defence techniques and martial arts tricking skills. Our new fulltime training centre in Beerwah has proven to be a great asset as we are now able to host international teams and provide the very best environment for training. A very exciting year lies ahead, including competitions in New Zealand, Thailand and Korea.
