Hi Everyone...
I was a little concerned when the organisers of the Beerwah Street Party put a message up on Facebook last week suggesting that we should all join hands and sing “Rain Rain Go Away! We don't want you on Party Day!" I had my doubts that this was going to be enough to prevent the non-stop rain we had been experiencing from ruining the event. However it seemed that the power of positive thought (song?) must have done the trick. The weather was amazing, the night was fantastic and thousands of people rocked up to the event, tasted the food, listened to great music, and enjoyed the entertainment, with plenty of kids making the most of the rides, the face painting and the other freebies on offer! What is truly remarkable about this event was that it was brought together by a relatively small, yet enthusiastic, bunch of volunteers who truly believe in the community and are passionate about reminding people of the importance of celebrating what a unique and special place Glasshouse Country is. So as one of the thousands who had a great night last Friday, I would like to say a huge thanks for your tireless dedication, we really do appreciate your efforts! Local News Tower planning rules unchanged At the recent Ordinary Meeting, Council endorsed changes to the planning scheme in relation to approvals for telecommunication tower applications, but without making any real changes at all. In 2016, a group of tower applications were rejected by Council as they fell within acceptable setback distances, ending up in the Planning and Environment Court, where Council acquiesced and subsequent approval was granted by the court. Division 10 Councillor, Greg Rogerson called for an investigation into changing the telecommunications code of the planning scheme to allow for relaxations of the setback rules. In May this year, Cr Rogerson told GC&M News that he wanted planning scheme changes to give certainty to essential infrastructure such as broadband towers. “Under the ridiculous current planning scheme rules, we are just condemning other communities to falling further and further behind,” said Cr Rogerson at the time. “I’ve listened to the experts and I’m confident with the safety aspects of the technology. And I’m confident that the performance of the wireless broadband is only going to get better and better as new technological advancements are made.” Cr Rogerson stated that he wished to see common sense prevail. “I want to see changes which will give Hinterland communities some certainty that they will be able to receive their NBN broadband much much earlier than would have happened if we kept applying the current planning scheme guidelines." But what Council approved at the October 12
meeting was that the rules would stay the same, and that amendments would clarify the intent of the rules, but not change them. Asked if the recent Council decision met his expectations, Cr Rogerson was ambivalent. “Unfathomably, the 400 metres setback remains as an ‘Acceptable Measure’ for residential development and I am still adamant, that it is nigh on impossible to achieve that setback in just about any residential area,” he explained. “The expected refinement to the Code, that my fellow Councillors did endorse, will hopefully clarify the fact that the required setback should be and is, for residential amenity, rather than a strict 400 metre dimension which has been falsely presumed or relied upon, to be for ‘Health and Safety’ requirements. “Furthermore, I want people to understand that whilst I certainly don’t want to see towers of any description, constructed and installed within close proximity to any residential dwelling, I do expect that where a tower can be largely hidden within the canopy of mature trees or vegetation and professionals determine that the site is preferred, due to the overall technical benefits afforded the community at large, common sense will prevail within Council’s Development Assessment process and strict dimensions will be set aside in favour of the achievement of true, good community amenity.” In fact he and Cr Ted Hungerford stood alone in voting against the ‘non-changes’. The refinement of the planning scheme will happen as part of the next available round of planning scheme amendments.

Scholarship for local musician By Sonia Clark Local lad Kody Thomas-Roby has recently been announced as the recipient of a fully paid 12-month scholarship to the new Australian Music Conservatory based at Tanawha. The talented young musician topped the list of 20 applicants vying for the inaugural scholarship and founder of the new school, Melissa Mitchell, was extremely impressed by the calibre of Kody’s work. Melissa said she was really impressed with his song writing ability and the fact that even at such a young age, Kody was such a prolific writer, with over 60 songs to his name. “He has a beautiful voice and also plays piano well - so these were all factors that made an impression on me when awarding the scholarship,” Melissa said. The school is in the final stages of completion ahead of the first class intakes of 2018 and offers courses in Certificate III and IV in music industry studies. Students can study while still at school, or attend fulltime with course fees ranging from $2,300 to $4,900. Next year, Kody will be studying his Certificate IV in music industry performance, which consists of 14 subjects including copyright and licencing, business skills, stagecraft, and song writing. He has also been offered the chance to study

Playground stirs Maleny spirit True to form, Maleny folk have again confirmed that they won’t allow their unique perspectives on their town to be taken for granted. When they see what they feel is an inappropriate change to their town, they mobilise, communicate, formulate and activate ... then form a facebook page to bring everyone together. An avalanche of on-line activity and complaints to Council about the planned replacement playground in Maple Street’s Cooke Park, saw a halt to the installation of a new playground. As soon as people realised that the existing bespoke timber structure was being removed to be replaced with some metal and plastic off-theshelf play equipment, the call went out for action, resulting in Council suspending any further works in order to consult more with the community. A key community driver has been Travis Earsman, who instigated contact with Council and has created a community facebook group called ‘Cooke Park Playground Community Group’. Travis posted a response he received from Cr Jenny McKay, in which she outlined some of the history of the project. “As you are no doubt aware, the removal of the play hut was necessary to ensure safety of users,” wrote Cr McKay. “I believe these garden themed play elements complement the Maleny spirit nicely, while providing a fun and education opportunity for our children.”

Cr McKay went on to explain that, as no budget had been allocated for new playground equipment, she found the prospect that the area could be left without play facilities as being inadequate. She found the money from another budget allocation to make the replacement playground happen. “I decided to deliver a new playground to ensure the safety of children,” she said. “There have been a number of complaints around public consultation, however Council has listened to the Maleny community’s concerns about the initial proposed play equipment and they would like to gain additional comment before proceeding with construction.” Cr McKay told GC&M News that Council officers were disappointed to discover the scale of the deterioration to the existing timber structures. “As you can appreciate council officers were very disappointed to find that the equipment had deteriorated internally to such a condition that it required removal – not maintenance,” explained Cr McKay. “Council did advise the community via a newsletter of the works to be conducted, which included a copy of the design,” she said. “We have sent out another newsletter which includes a survey of additional options, this gives the whole of the community a say in how they would like the park to look. These works were to take place outside of divisional funding in the form of maintenance, however should additional options
be incorporated, they will need to be addressed against the available funding which might see this project put on hold until funds become available.” A Council spokesperson told GC&M News that the survey is online at www.haveyoursay. sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/cooke-park-playground where two playground options are presented. “This method of consultation has been selected as it allows Council to collect information from a large segment of the community within a short timeframe,” the spokesperson explained. “The construction timeframe will be determined once the community feedback has been evaluated and the preferred playground equipment has been determined. “These different types of playgrounds require the services of different contractors and delivery will be dependent on their availability. “Should the community opt to proceed with the original proposed equipment it could be installed by Christmas 2017. The second proposed option could be installed in 2018, with construction starting in March or April.” Survey submissions close 5pm November 3, 2017. For those who can’t access the internet, Cr McKay is making the survey available through the Maleny visitor information centre or by contacting her office. To complement this, locals have created a petition, as well as organising a meeting with Council’s principle landscape architect and are holding a public meeting.

Recently San Training Centre sent a team of five to compete at the 2017 Australian National Taekwondo Championships, held in Bendigo, Victoria. In last week’s edition GC&M News shared the news of young Emma Hall from Beerburrum, who brought home a gold and was crowned National Champion of her age-group red belt division. Along with Emma’s gold, the team also brought home a silver and two bronze medals in sparring. Cameron Taylor from San Training Centre said the Taekwondo National Championship is no small event - this year more than 850 competitors from all over Australia took part. “Our team of fighters from San consisted of Aaron Lerch, Emma Hall, Joey Mortimer, Christine Mortimer and Charlie Bidgood, who all represented the club and Queensland exceptionally well,” he said. “While the best result from the day was Emma, Christine was uncontested in her red belt masters division and moved up to the open division where she finished with a silver. Aaron had a large division and was successful in beating a fellow Queenslander who had beaten him in three previous encounters and was defeated in the quarter finals.” Coach Norm Taylor is very proud of how everyone performed on the day and said he could see a big improvement from last year’s nationals. Norm said having a student win a major event like nationals makes the whole team work harder. “With no more major events this year, the team will have a few weeks of rest before starting preparations for some big competitions in 2018, where we have junior members hoping to qualify for the World Junior Championships,” Norm said. “Both junior and senior members are also hoping to win selection to the G-ranked Oceania Championships.”

Development watch ... A material change of use application (MCU17/2103) has been lodged with the Sunshine Coast Council to establish a 12-unit development on land at 17 and 19 Swan Street, Beerwah. The proposed lowset units are within an existing multi-unit residential area, with the development being consistent with the land zoned as Medium Density Residential. Contributed by Ursula Starkovsky, President - Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce Inc Recently I had a meeting with Andrew Wallace MP with regards to Telstra mobile reception. People might remember, a few months ago the Chamber of Commerce launched a survey in this publication to find out where and how many black spots there are in our area. Not surprising, a lot of people who are not happy with their mobile phone coverage responded. Thanks to Jenelle Harrap of the Sunshine Coast Council’s Economic Development Unit for making the chamber aware of the current ‘Mobile Black Spot Program’ initiated by the Federal Government. Under this program, a total of almost $600 million was committed to improve mobile coverage along major regional transport routes, in small communities and in locations prone to natural disaster. Beerwah and Glass House Mountains are both marked as priority locations within round two of this program, where a further 266 new or upgraded mobile base stations will be delivered. Location of the towers has been finalised and Telstra anticipates that the new towers will be finished by mid-2018. Finally, there is hope that people in Beerwah and Glass House can call from their mobiles without having to run outside to find a spot where reception is available!

Local groups to profit from waste reduction scheme
At a meeting in Glass House Andrew Powell, Toby Hutcheon Mountains last Thursday evening, and Suncoast Scouts Regional local businesses, community Commissioner Rob Cullen groups, schools and interested residents heard how the container refund scheme and the plastic shopping bag ban will work once introduced from July 1 next year. State Member, Andrew Powell said that the new legislation had been a long time coming but he was confident people will support the changes. “It has been a tortuous path getting through the process, so let’s embrace it and see what the future holds,” he said. Queensland Manager for the Boomerang Alliance organisation Toby Hutcheon said that the ten cent container refund scheme presents some very real benefits for community groups, schools and other organisations. “It’s been estimated that a high school of 1,200 students could make $25,000 a year in refunds for containers sold through their tuckshop. “We encourage schools and groups to look at how they can get involved and benefit from the scheme,” said Toby. Toby outlined three ways groups can be involved. Firstly, they can run a collection depot where people bring in their containers to claim a refund. The group then receives a four cent handling fee per container when the containers are taken to a processor. The group could set up collection points where people just donate their containers and the group then received the ten cent refund directly. Or the group could arrange to be a collector at events or centres and collect containers from people at the event or centre. Local groups wanting to find out more about taking advantage of the container refund scheme can contact Andrew Powell’s office on 5435 2013.

Knitting for the love of it By Lea Parkes
Many GC&M News readers will know of or have seen the knitting talents of Lottie Nisbett. Lottie is responsible for the spectacularly yarn bombed Christmas tree outside our office each year, and she has already been hard at work getting this year’s creative work completed. However, recently Lottie has taken on a knitting project of another kind ... one which she was only too pleased to do for her friend, Beerwah local Trish Cashin. When Trish’s elderly mother Patricia Thompson past away recently she left behind a vast number of knitted squares that she had made. Even though she suffered with Alzheimer’s for the past
few years, her love of knitting stayed with her. At this sad time Trish, always a strong advocate for recycling and reusing, turned to her friend Lottie and together they came up with the idea of turning Patricia’s knitted squares into comfort dolls for dementia patients. Trish sees the work that Lottie has done as creating a legacy for her mum’s passion for knitting and she is really appreciative of both Lottie’s time and creative talents. Now that Lottie has put the dolls together, Trish would like to donate them onto dementia patients or anyone that needs that comfort. By Lea Parkes Visit Sunshine Coast and Hinterland Tourism has secured Channel 9’s Today Show to broadcast national weather crosses that will be presented live by Stevie Jacobs this weekend. On Saturday, October 28 Stevie will be at Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve in Maleny and on Sunday, October 29 this will be happening in the main street of Montville. Locals know just how great the view from Maleny out across the beautiful Glass House Mountains is, so fingers crossed for some wonderful weather so we can show off to the rest of the country what a great place it is to be. Mooloolah Community Workshops
Do you live in the Mooloolah area and love the community and lifestyle? Want to join with other locals to come up with some ways to further strengthen and support our community? Come along to an initial community workshop to do just this. Share ideas, get inspired, meet other locals and have some fun. Whether it's time, skills, resources, networks, funds or just ideas you have to offer, anyone can play a part in contributing to our community. Young people are especially encouraged to come. The momentum to start this came from a facebook post with a call put for anyone wanting to do something together for the Mooloolah community. With such a great response, the momentum has led to running these workshops to kick start some new energy into our town. The workshop will be held twice to accommodate for people's different availability. Workshops will be held at the Mooloolah Public Hall on Thursday, November 16 from 5.30pm – 7.30pm and on Saturday, November 18 from 3.30pm – 5.30pm. All are welcome to attend. And this year alone, 50 million plastic bags will enter the litter stream from Australia, making our country the second largest waste producer per capita. A new documentary movie has just been released titled 'Blue' on our oceans, fish stocks, and plastics. The film is intended to ignite public awareness about the key issues facing our oceans today unsustainable fishing practices, marine pollution, destructive mining and gas development, the critical need for marine parks, and protection of keystone species and habitats. Conservationist Tim Silverwood and biologist Jennifer Lavers reveal that despite Australia's relative isolation, plastic in our oceans is having a major impact on marine life. On Lord Howe Island, plastic fills the bellies of 90% of sea birds. Australia is the second largest waste producer in the world. Our addiction to plastics also drives petrochemical industries, which expand into our seas and compound the problem. The film 'Blue' comes at a time when it is incredibly important for us all to consider our personal impact on the oceans and the legacy we want to leave for generations to come. by coal-fired power stations and is further proof that Queensland does not need a new coal-fired power station being trumpeted by the LNP. To ensure continued supply, a $48.5 million overhaul of the Callide Power Station has been completed by the government, so Queensland’s power needs are met this coming summer before the renewable energy projects are completed. The claim that the proposed Adani mine will create 10,000 jobs is fallacious and has since been disproved. If this debt-laden monster mine ever starts, and then only with the support of the Australian taxpayer, just over 1,000 jobs might eventuate. Right now, 21 renewable projects worth more than $3.4 billion have been committed to or are under construction in Queensland, bringing thousands of jobs to regions. Despite billions of dollars spent on road upgrades, congestion is a fact of life on the Sunshine Coast, and nothing will improve until the advent of autonomous electric vehicles. As a recent emergency patient at Sunshine Coast University Hospital, I can personally attest to the waiting time for treatment. The hospital’s triage system ensures that life threatening admissions (eg heart attacks) always take priority over non-lifethreatening injuries and ailments. This follows right through the whole treatment process. My heart operation was suspended to operate on a heart attack victim. “Ramping” is not a true indication of the emergency treatment the hospital provides, although LNP politicians would have you believe otherwise, and only denigrates the extraordinary skills and efforts of hospital and ambulance staff. Precinct a Country Club
Samantha Dodd is too right about the absence of community consultation in relation to the Maleny Community Precinct, GC&M News October 18. Since writing a letter on the issue of a community park in GC&M News on September 30, many people have spoken to me of their disquiet. How has this happened? A group convened by the Sunshine Coast Council some years ago to advise on the planning of the precinct included more champions for club-based sports than it did champions for community recreation.
Greg Newton’s letter in the edition of October 18, the Palaszczuk Government’s recent open tender called for the development of 400 MW of largescale renewables and 100 MW of energy storage projects. 115 proposals were lodged from 79 businesses. These included a 2,200 MW wind energy project, a 6,400 MW solar project, 500 MW of other renewable energy technologies adding to 6,000 MW of energy storage projects. This is greater than the current 8,200 MW generated

The effect of this imbalance persists to this day, not only in the improbable prospect of an equestrian arena with attendant trappings on the only suitable land left for a spacious community park, but in a persistent devaluation of the community interest. The results are evident in a huge maintenance shed being plonked on a site hazardous to walkers and nearby residents, as Samantha Dodd attests. It is also evident in the "extensive areas of passive open space in the form of parks" stipulated in the Maleny Planning Code being reduced to a tiny glade and a roadside "recreational node"; in the location of the only toilet block 400 metres from the precinct's sole community recreational amenity, the popular Maleny Trail; in the truncation of a wetland site adjoining the Trail to accommodate the reconfiguration of the golf course from nine to 18 holes. And so it goes. The precinct was never meant to be a country club for golfers and riders with a path around the edge for everyone else, but that's how it's shaping up. Re: Cost to State continues
It is time to stop dishonest propaganda on vegetation management policy as in Brent Hampstead’s letter in GC&M News, October 11 edition. Labor candidate Brent Hampstead’s claims on tree clearing using SLATS Data (Statewide Landcover and Trees Study) in a selective manner is both dishonest and deceitful. This was clearly explained in The Country Life in October 12 and the Courier Mail on October 13 by the president of AgForce. As farmers of many years, we are disgusted with this claim as nearly all land cleared was for regrowth control, fire breaks, fence lines, and fodder harvesting. In the Maleny area our main problem is regrowth control, as a lot of our once productive land is now covered by rubbish (regrowth). Maleny has three very successful businesses, Maleny Dairies, Maleny Cheese and Maleny Food Co that rely 100% on farmers. This policy was negotiated by the farmers with the government of the day in a common-sense way for the future of our food production. It is very clear that you intend to use farmers as political footballs to gain green votes. Just remember every family needs a farmer. Bill and Marlene Hankinson Maleny
Figure fudging time
An election must be close. True to form, the Palaszczuk Labor Government has resorted to the same old farmer-bashing and figure fudging with the release of the 2015-16 ‘Statewide Landcover Trees Study’ (SLATS). Labor has deceptively included fodder harvesting to feed starving livestock and clearing firebreaks and fence lines as “broad scale land clearing” to try and inflate their figures. Queensland was 80% drought declared for this entire reporting period, so clearly Labor’s happy to kick struggling farmers when they’re down. About 50% of Queensland is covered by woody vegetation, so the “clearing” in this report represents just 0.23% of the state - less than half of 1%. However, the report does not count vegetation that regrows at a great rate each year. Those of us who are fortunate enough to live in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland need only take a look at what Maleny looked like a century ago, even one decade ago – guess what, trees grow!

Until the SLATS report includes this annual regrowth, it will never be an accurate representation of the health of habitat for Queensland’s native animals. Our vegetation laws were sensible and balanced and allowed farmers and graziers to get on with producing our food and fibre and protecting Queensland’s precious environment. Instead of constant scaremongering, Labor’s candidate for Glass House could do something useful – like convincing his boss to support the LNP’s policies for driving down electricity prices and freezing the cost of registering your family vehicle (see www.betterqueensland.org.au). Re: Peachester Rural Fire Station
It is a shame that the letter from Peachester Rural Fire Brigade in the September 27 edition seemed to imply that Peachester History Committee (PHC) as Trustee of the Dip Reserve may somehow be holding up progress on the planned Rural Fire Station. There has never been a problem from our point of view; however readers may be interested in some background information. Peachester Public Dip was listed on the Queensland Heritage Register on April 3, 2009. The following year, funds were allocated to restore the dip structure and clear the site to make it more accessible. In 2011 and 2012 PHC wrote to State Member Andrew Powell about the need for maintenance. Andrew then asked us to take on the role of Trustee of the site, and this became official in 2014. When in 2015 Peachester RFB chose the Dip Reserve as a suitable site for their proposed fire station, because of the proximity to water, PHC as Trustee was asked to approve a lease of part of the Reserve. We agreed, and signed off on the project in May 2016. It was then found that an environmental assessment was necessary, so the bureaucratic process started again. We received a letter in late August this year from the Public Trustee official solicitor, asking once again for approval, as Trustee of the Reserve, for the lease to go ahead. Once again we responded positively, in fact sent an email to that effect on September 4. I hope this assures all concerned of the peripheral but positive role played by Peachester History Committee in the Rural Fire Station project. However we have no influence on the wheels of bureaucracy … which continue to go round and round. Helen Page President PHC Inc

I have always assumed that regular letter contributor, Greg Newton, to be a supporter of the Liberal National Party. However, after reading his letter in October 18 edition, I can only conclude that LNP stands for ‘Loony Nutter Party’. How anyone can make such broad, if not libelous, statements that are not backed with evidence and expect the reader to believe what is written, is beyond my comprehension. As such, I provide some evidence for people to consider. The previous LNP Newman government ordered 75 six-car sets of new electric trains for the suburban network. The contract was awarded to a company in India. They started arriving in March this year but have not entered service because of a whole variety of technical issues. The first electric train was built in Maryborough over 30 years ago, took four weeks to pass acceptance trials, and is still in service today. Furthermore, Queensland Rail built a railway line to
Springfield without any controversy. However, when the Newman government was in power the building of the line to Redcliffe was fraught with difficulties. QR was prevented from bidding for the contract. For Greg Newton to suggest that Labor and Greens cannot run trains and are interested in welfare instead of jobs is ludicrous. The neighbours and residents of Kirsten Drive and Smerdon Way at Glass House Mountains are fed up that someone is regularly leaving dog poo in bags on people’s footpaths, at the base of trees, power poles and street signs. Most residents in this estate have dogs and most do the right thing, sadly it only takes one person to set a bad example for the majority to become upset! We ask that if the person responsible can go to the trouble of bagging it, then they should finish the job properly and bin it. Unfortunately, the weather was not as welcoming as the GCC host families and buddies had hoped for, but the visitors made the most of it and took the constant rain in good grace. The GCC students were astonished to learn some of the differences between Japanese and Australian schools, in particular that the Japanese do not hire school cleaners as students are responsible for all of the cleaning, not just of their classroom. In Japan the school year runs from April to March the following year, and at Seikyo Gakuen and many other Japanese schools, they do not employ relief or substitute teachers. On the rare occasion that a teacher can’t attend class, the students are expected to supervise themselves and work quietly. The vast majority of students walk to school with their parents or catch the train. Only in rural schools are students allowed to ride their bicycles. The Japanese students were thrilled to meet and pat GCC’s ‘Chappy Spike’, an eastern bearded dragon who lives in the College Pastor’s office and a two-metre python that was visiting one of the host homes. They also taught origami to the younger students, enjoyed indoor surf lessons, decorated boomerangs, and practiced English in the local shopping centre. The GCC group of 13 students and one teacher was part of a greater group of 170 students and about 10 staff spread out from the Sunshine Coast to the Gold Coast.

Literacy galore for students
Contributed by Michelle Lenz Students from Mooloolah State School have recently been entering writing competitions for stories and poetry. The students from the school writer’s club had the opportunity to enter Write for Fun and Poetry Competitions. They spent their spare time working on their master pieces to submit to represent themselves and our school. Caroline Kelly inspires their writing and creativity and is always around to lend a hand for their writing skills and encourages the students to enter competitions for their work. The Poetry competition had seven entries, from Year 6 students Alyssa Hayman, Maddy Lencz, Hollin Fish and Tamsyn Douglas and Year 5 students Lily-Rose Jerebine, Gemma Atkinson, and Nate Ashurst. The story writers have also done an amazing job with entries from Year 4 students Willem Poulus, Scarlett Hopkins, Matilda Montague, Bonnie Muller, Riley Hackney, Nayten Fish and Helena Kranz with five students moving onto the next round of the competition, so we wish them the best of luck. If they go on, they can be published in a huge book of winners. Young writers of Mooloolah State School have had a fantastic year of gaining new skills, improving comprehension, and enhancing their language and writing skills. This was seen in the success of 12 young writer’s being chosen for this Year’s ‘Write for Fun’ publication. Beauty& Health&Wellbeing Wellbeing Free flu vaccine for kids under five After the worst flu season in recent years, the Queensland Government has announced a new vaccination program for children aged six months to five years in 2018. Minister for Health and Ambulance Services Cameron Dick said up to 300,000 children across Queensland would be eligible for a free flu vaccination next year. “Following the spike in flu cases this year, the Palaszczuk Government is investing $1 million so young children can access a potentially lifesaving vaccine for free,” he said. “Of all the vaccine preventable diseases, influenza causes the most hospital admissions of

children under five years old. “Children under five have some of the highest rates of influenza and associated complications, and this year has been no different. “So far this year, 544 children aged under five admitted to public hospitals have tested positive for influenza.” Mr Dick said children contributed greatly to the spread of the flu in the community and the risks of serious complications for kids who contract the flu are high. “That’s why we’ve developed this program, to ensure young children have the best chance of protection against influenza,” he said.
“Unfortunately, influenza cannot be eradicated so we need to continue finding ways of protecting the community from this debilitating virus.” The free vaccine will be made available through general practices and other childhood immunisation providers next year. In 2018, a new virtuosic classical women's choir will be established on the Sunshine Coast. Led by music director Mitch Meyer, this group will concentrate on creating a choir of excellence of approximately 24 to 32 singers concentrating on works written for women's voices. Expressions of interest are being called for dedicated singers and interested people to form a group to be called ‘Women of the Sun’. Entry would be by partial audition and based on experience and a commitment to create a choir of excellence dealing in high quality, virtuosic and a predominantly classical style repertoire accompanied primarily by piano, but also with small orchestral ensembles and a capella work. Those interested should already have experience in singing with choirs and have a solid voice with a range of approximately two octaves and a reasonable standard of sight reading. Exposure to performing a capella music will also be important, as will the capacity to stand on your own in chorus. You should be comfortable singing in a variety of common languages including Latin, Italian, German, and French. • Once your spring flowering bulbs – such as jonquils, daffodils, and iris – have died down, lift out the bulbs, clean off the dirt and store them in a dry, dark place. • Propagate daylilies from any plantlets that have developed along the flower stalks. Just plant them into a pot of quality potting mix and wait for them to grow. • The recent rains and warmer temperatures will see a big increase in grasshopper and caterpillar numbers in the garden. Pick them off and squash them, or use a pyrethrum or bacteria-based spray. • Time to prune your azaleas and dead head roses to encourage continual flowering. • Keep an eye out for bronze orange bugs on your citrus. Knock them off and squash them or spray with pyrethrum. • Fruit flies will start to appear. Keep them at bay by cleaning up old rotten fruits and using a splash bait, such as Eco-Naturalure. • Prune back your grevilleas by a third to promote bushiness. • It’s important to keep up regular watering of citrus while they are flowering and developing small fruits. • Keep spraying your developing mangoes with Mancozeb to prevent the disease anthracnose. Vegetables - Plant celery, asian greens, chilli, eggplant, silver beet, capsicum, rhubarb, choko, lettuce, cucumber, squash, beans, sweet corn, sweet potato, radish, tomato, zucchini, carrot, okra, pumpkin, spring onion, rockmelon and watermelon. Flowers - Plant sunflower, amaranthus, celosia, gomphrena, marigold, petunia, impatiens, portulaca, salvia, zinnia, ageratum, coleus, aster, cockscomb, californian poppy, begonia, cosmos, torenia, and dahlia.

Makeover for Maleny, Mary River and Mooloolah River catchments
An army of community volunteers and conservationists will clean up the Maleny, Mary River, and Mooloolah River catchments, thanks to funding from the State Government. The clean-up is being covered by $140,000 of funding announced for Glass House to tackle weeds, plant native trees, and help protect the habitat of rare and threatened animals and plant species. Environment Minister Steven Miles said local beauty spots such as Bridge Creek in Maleny would be among the areas to benefit. “I am pleased that the Lake Baroon Catchment Care Group will use its $46,610 funding to enhance Bridge Creek by planting 8,500 trees and install 25 nesting boxes,” Mr Miles said. “They will weed 7.5 hectares of land and erect a fence to protect livestock access to riparian areas. “Also, the Hinterland Bush Links Inc group will put their $49,440 of funding to good use to eradicate invasive pest weeds across 15 hectares in the upper Mary River catchment, with project sites located on Elaman and Cedar creeks. “The Mooloolah River Waterwatch and Landcare Inc group will use its $45,881 funding to control weeds along two kilometres of the south branch of the Mooloolah River. “In addition to this, the group will remove rubbish from the area and hold eight community planting days and install 12 nesting boxes.” Mr Miles said the three groups would be successful in engaging community volunteers in their clean-up activities. Barung Landcare Midyim Austromyrtus dulcis Also called ‘midgen berry’ or ‘sand berry’, Midyim is a low, sprawling shrub or tall ground cover growing to about one metre in coastal sandy soils. Its lanceolate leaves have a coppery sheen above and are hairy underneath. White, fivepetalled, star-shaped flowers appear from spring to autumn, followed by mauve to white, pea-sized speckled berries. Endemic to eastern Australia, Midyim occurs in New South Wales and Queensland, south from Fraser Island. It is a close relative of the Lilly Pilly. Midyim is a very useful plant for the wildlife-friendly garden, being attractive to birds and insects. It can be used as a low screening or hedge plant, or as a tallish groundcover. While it handles a range of soils and climatic conditions, Midyim appreciates good drainage. It is self-pollinating and relatively free from pests and diseases, however, as a member of the Myrtaceae family, it is at some risk from Myrtle Rust. The Midyim berry has creamy translucent flesh, small seeds, and a delicious, sweet flavour. It contains dietary fibre, calcium, vitamin C and iron. Many have rated it the best-tasting of bush food plants. Its flavour has been described as gingery, apple-like and blueberry with a hint of eucalyptus, apricot, cinnamon, and nutmeg. I think they taste a bit like musk lollies! Eat them straight from the bush, or use them as you would blueberries in pies, desserts, and jams. Austromyrtus dulcis seedlings are available from Barung Landcare’s Community Nursery, Porters Lane, Maleny. After a long process of consultation, the Caloundra-Glasshouse Country Anglican Parish is excited and happy to welcome the Reverend Julie Worrall as their new parish priest. Julie has recently held the position of rector of the Chermside Anglican Parish. Julie was recently commissioned at St Andrew’s Anglican Church at Caloundra by the Northern Regional Bishop Jeremy Greaves, where a large gathering of family, friends and parishioners celebrated her appointment as rector and welcomed Julie, and her husband Peter, to the parish. Julie was ordained to the priesthood in 2005 at St John’s Cathedral. She has a passion and love for children and young people and really enjoys watching children grow and develop and come to faith. She also loves companioning people who are seeking to explore their faith or deepen their relationship with Jesus. She says while not all aspects of ministry are “fun”, she likes the diversity and opportunities in ministry to grow and develop, and to learn from others’ gifts and experiences. Julie said that after six happy years of ministry at Chermside, she looks forward to new opportunities in this great part of the Diocese.

It was Dr Martin Luther who posted his 95 Theses or propositions to the door of the Castle Church at Wittenberg in Germany. They were statements which decried the nature of the Roman Church at that time which was in total contradiction to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The Roman Church was on a financial rollercoaster. There were fees and charges for almost everything including the sale of indulgences; that is paying for the release of friends and neighbours from purgatory. Luther took the path that if the church was to survive, a return to the basics of the Christian Faith was vital. His emphasis on Christ alone, Faith alone, Word alone would lay this foundation. Scripture made it clear that salvation was through faith in Jesus Christ, and none other.

Good works were an outcome of faith, not a prerequisite for faith. Salvation was by God’s grace alone through faith in Jesus Christ. Are you thinking of selling? Tips for summer sales season Hi everybody, Dan Clarke from First National Beerwah here. What an exciting time of the year right now! The property market is in full flow and buyer activity is at an alltime high as the Spring season rapidly draws to a close and the run up to Christmas begins. If you are thinking of selling, I thought it might be worth passing on some information and handy hints about what we are seeing and feeling in our local market space from property professionals in the area. I have been actively tracking the market over the last ten months, and there have been some fascinating revelations that I believe are changing your market space. The big one has been that realestate.com.au inquiries via email have fallen by 22% while inquiry via mobile devices has increased dramatically – no doubt the way of the new world! What is also revealed is that most buyers are actually doing ‘drive-bys’ first to look at the property before contacting the agent via phone or email. This allows the potential buyer to see first-hand the street appeal of the property, i.e. how does the front of house presentation stack up, and to assess if the property location is appealing. If I was going to give any advice on what potential sellers should do to their property, it would be to ensure that your front of house presentation is STELLAR. As much as 50% of potential buyers are making a decision based predominately on how your front of house presentation looks at first sight ... yes, they really are judging ‘your book by its cover’!

I had a chat to Jason Anderson from New Look Painting and Maintenance to see if he could offer any good tips to prepare your home for sale.
Jason had some great pointers for both inside and out including assessing your flyscreens to ensure they are clean of dust, grime, and insects, and to repair loose or disconnected frames. He also suggests attending to your gutters and making sure you clean them out before heavy rains to prevent overflow damage. Also, gurney foot paths, driveways and walls and all outdoor surfaces to prevent slippery hazards and remove mould, dirt, and grime. Always check and repair dripping taps and shower heads to prevent water loss, and consider making sure your wet areas are clean and free from old, mouldy, or broken silicon. Cleaning solar panels not only looks good but also allows for optimum function, and finally Jason suggests keeping an eye out for all your painted areas – making sure to touch up or repaint wear and scuff marks to ensure best presentation. I also spoke with Dan Joyce from Joyce Mowing and Gardening to see if he could offer any additional tips for the garden. With all the recent rains, local gardens have flourished, and lawn lengths have almost instantly increased after the extended dry spell. This new growth has highlighted some key to-do jobs for the garden to consider for spring coming into the Summer season.
Dan suggested keeping an eye out for lawn grubs after any wet weather activity – especially from September through to May. You may find their egg sacks attached under the eaves of your house or brown patches in your lawn. Remove grubs as soon as possible and always consider using an organic insecticide that is safe for beneficial insects, bees, and your family. He also recommends fertilising and aerating your lawns – especially after the recent beautiful rains, and to mulch and fertilise your garden beds well after decent rain to lock in the moisture and suppress weeds before the summer heat kicks in. Mow your lawn regularly. Just like regular exercise it’s healthier for your lawn, your machines and guess what... you! Also use a whipper-snipper to maintain garden edges rather than poison. Whipper snipping reduces erosion, prevents weed regrowth, is environmentally friendly, and it just looks better!

Sport Inaugural Legends PGA Pro-Am at Maleny Maleny Golf Club (MGC) is pleased to announce the inaugural Live Life Communities – Maleny Grove PGA Legends Pro-Am will be held at Maleny on December 16, 2017 with a prize purse of $12,000 on offer. Former Major Championship winners Wayne Grady (US PGA), Ian Baker-Finch (The Open) along with Australian golfing legends such as Rodger Davis, Peter Fowler, Michael Harwood, Michael Clayton and Peter Senior, all feature regularly on the tour. About 40 tour regulars have already entered to play, including current Order of Merit Leader Tim Elliott, Mike Harwood and Ossie Moore. MGC President Dr Max Whitten said the Club was pleased and excited to team up with Live Life Communities - Maleny Grove as naming rights sponsor to bring the Ladbrokes PGA Legends Tour to the Sunshine Coast Hinterland this year for the first time. “Encouragingly we are attracting a strong professional field and with the support of Live Life Communities – Maleny Grove, aim to establish this tournament as a premier annual fixture on the region’s golfing and event calendar,” he said. “I’d like to also thank our other key sponsors including Maleny IGA, Hotel Maleny, Schweppes, Drummond Golf, Spicers, Pacific Land Rover and Pacific Ford, Brouhaha and Maleny Food Co because without their collective support this event simply would not happen.” Live Life Communities – Maleny Grove Manager Greg Guilford welcomed the opportunity to partner with Maleny Golf Club and showcase communityfocused retirement living at its best in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland. “This tournament is a perfect fit for us in terms of both location and demographic and we look forward to working with Maleny Golf Club and the PGA to develop the stature and popularity of this event into the future,” Mr Guilford said. Mountain View Challenge a challenge in the wet The Lions Club of Maleny Blackall Range’s annual Mountain View Challenge was even more of a challenge to competitors and volunteers alike this year. Only dedicated families and friends and volunteers were there to watch and cheer them on. The 21.1 km event set off in a heavy downpour and the 40 competitors braved the intermittent rain as well as the hills. Kevin Muller came in first in a time of 1 hr 26.16 mins. Eleanor Dadswell won the 10,000m event from a field of 72 in a time of 1 hr 00.08 secs and the team The Misfits, comprising Josh Corcoran, Jonathan Coxell and Romy Wolstencroft won the Maleny District Sport and Recreation Club Team Challenge Trophy for the event. Entry fees from this event are donated to the Lions Childhood Cancer Research Foundation, to assist identify the relevant genes in their Kids Cancer Genome Project. This is a collaborative partnership, which has brought together Australia’s national personalised medicine program in childhood cancer (the Zero Childhood Cancer Program, led by Children’s Cancer Institute and the Kids Cancer Centre, Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick) and state-of-the-art capability in whole genome sequencing and analysis at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research.

The only bowls played last week was our Friday afternoon bowls that was enjoyed by a bowls starved group of regulars who enjoyed some fine weather and good bowls. We are continuing with the scroungers format even though the 2017 competition has been completed. Same prizes and fun will continue, thank you for your support. Witta Tennis Club Contributed by Maree Hooley The Wildcats team, of Stacey, Libby, Jenie and Annie may have lost to Caloundra Skylarks 40-38 games, they still had good fun and played good tennis. Whistlers played at Witta against Caloundra Racquettes. We were all happy to be playing after the big rainy days and there were good rallies at all sets as well as lots of deuces but we managed to get them. And we had a good win. Score was 48-13 games, 8-0 sets. Team was Liz Mellish, Maree Hooley, Donna Kuskopf and Aki Lepper. The Witta Tennis, Golf Challenge went ahead when the skies cleared for us on Sunday morning. Fortunately we were still able to use the carts and after such a wet week, it was perfect golf weather with lots of fun. Winners on the day received great prizes, compliments of Club Sponsors, The Purple Palate, and Maleny Supa IGA. Thank you to all participants, volunteers and especially to Maleny Golf Club of providing such a great venue.
The Range Croquet Club Contributed by Ken Barker No play this Sunday because of the rain, but the grass is looking great. No play either on Thursday though suggestions are welcome for ideas on how variations on water polo may be applied to the ancient game. Enjoy the rest, why not take some books from the club library and brush up on strategy, or go online to Oxford Croquet and do the same. The lawns should look great for the approaching club tournament which is on from November 2 – 5 and players are urged to put their names down for the tournament. Division 1 will play on the 2nd, Division 2 on the 3rd, Division 3 on the 4th and Division 4 on the 5th. It’s a great tournament to play in. The lawns are being renovated on November 20 and will be unavailable for a couple of weeks after that. Club play days are Thursday and Sunday at 1pm for 1.30pm. Go Tamara Beerwah High, Year 7 student Tamara Taripo, recently competed at the School Sport 1012 Track and Field State Championships in Brisbane. This is Tamara's third year representing Sunshine Coast and she was chosen to be the team captain. Tamara came second in shot put with a throw of 11.68m, a personal best, and only missed out on first place by 3cm. She also placed second in discus with a throw of 37.72m. Now Tamara is off to compete in the Pacific School Games being held in Adelaide. Good luck Tamara!

Membership for 2018 is now being taken at Club Glass House. It will be $88 for next year to be paid by December 31. This includes your yearly membership to Club Glass House. Weekly Social games will remain $12 per game for the next year. Mixed Pairs draw is up so please take note. One game per day, but if agreed by both teams you’re welcome to play both games in a day. Play starts this weekend. Mixed Fours nominations are now open; this is the final Club event of the year. Big news! For the month of November starting on Friday the 3rd we will be playing Scroungers on a Friday night. There is a sheet at the club to place your name down. The cost is $10 and there will be four prizes for the night with the club putting in $150 for prize money. Everyone is welcome including nonmembers. Start time is 7pm so please arrive about 6.30pm.
