Earlier in the year when most of our normal lives were basically shut down I wondered what that would mean for all our important events throughout the year. Being November, for me it means covering high school formals and graduations, then as November draws to a close all the Christmas events start to kick off. Judging by the number of glamorous high school formal photos I have seen floating around Facebook recently and our five pages of Christmas News in this edition (pages 22-27), apparently I shouldn’t have worried about events

Sunshine Coast election wrap up By Greg Brown All seats across Queensland have finally been formally declared by the Electoral Commission of Queensland, with the Australian Labor Party (ALP) able to form a majority government with 52 seats (up from 48). The Liberal-National Party (LNP) won 34 seats (down from 38), Katter’s Australia Party three seats, Pauline Hanson’s One Nation Party one seat and the independent Sandy Bolton in Noosa held her seat. Annastacia Palaszczuk has been returned as the Premier, while the LNP has had a leadership change with Deb Frecklington standing down and David Crisafulli taking the reins of leader of the opposition. Prior to the recent election, of the seven Sunshine Coast electorates, six were held by the LNP (Ninderry, Nicklin, Maroochydore, Kawana, Caloundra and Glass House) with Noosa held by the independent Sandy Bolton. And just to the south, the seat of Pumicestone was also held by the LNP. However, the local political environment changed significantly after

October 31, with the ALP capturing two Sunshine Coast seats from the LNP, plus Pumicestone. In all the seats held by the LNP, except for Maroochydore, there were considerable swings away from the conservatives towards the ALP in the two-party preferred results. Moving down the coast, the political landscape now looks like this: • Noosa – independent, Sandy Bolton • Ninderry – LNP, Dan Purdie • Nicklin – ALP, Robert Skelton • Glass House – LNP, Andrew Powell • Maroochydore – LNP, Fiona Simpson • Buderim – LNP, Brent Mickelberg • Kawana – LNP, Jarrod Bleijie • Caloundra – ALP, Jason Hunt • Pumicestone – ALP, Ali King Locally, Andrew Powell (LNP) held onto Glass House by a reduced margin from the ALP’s Brent Hampstead. In the end the two-party preferred figures were Andrew Powell 15,706 votes (51.58%) to Brent Hampstead 14,741 (48.42%). The margin is now only 1.58%, down from 3.4% after the 2017 election.

Mr Powell suffered another blow when the shadow cabinet positions were announced by new leader David Crusifulli and he was overlooked for any position. In the previous opposition he was the shadow minister for State Development, Manufacturing, Infrastructure and Planning. In Caloundra, the ALP’s Jason Hunt captured the most two-party preferred votes (17,040 or 52.51%) over Stuart Coward (LNP) with 15,409 votes (47.49%). This reverses a previous margin of 3.4% to the LNP and gives Mr Hunt a 2.51% margin, equating to a 5.91% swing towards the ALP. In one of the closest results across the state, the ALP candidate in Nicklin

(Robert Skelton) only won the seat by 84 votes (14,866 to Marty Hunt’s 14,782). With plans progressing for significant (and costly) upgrades to the north coast railway line and the Bruce Highway, the political gradient from south the north will prove to be interesting. Moving up the railway corridor, the electorates go … ALP (Pumicestone) – LNP (Glass House) – ALP (Caloundra) – ALP (Nicklin) – LNP (Ninderry) – independent (Noosa). With funding split between the state and federal governments, it will be vital that a collaborative approach be adopted between all local members, regardless of political persuasion.

Clap out marks end of school Students and staff at the Glasshouse Christian College celebrated the final school day for 75 students from the three year 12 classes on Thursday, November 19. Having the graduating students clapped out of the ceremony provided a memorable and, in some cases, emotional ending to school life for the students. This year the formal was held on the following night at Sandstone Point Hotel at Bribie Island. Photos from this event will appear in the December 9 edition of GC&M News.

Shebah rideshare available locally Did you know Shebah is Australia’s leading all-women rideshare service? It employs only women drivers and is committed to safely transporting women and families, allowing them to travel with confidence. With transport options always a bit tricky around the hinterland, this niche service has been welcomed and is growing in popularity since launching three years ago. Beerwah driver and regional leader for Shebah, Khylie Wood, said the app-based service is like having an “army of aunties” available to support women, with a range of transport options that always put the safety of riders and drivers first. “Some of the ways we assist include school drop off and pickups, getting kids to after school sports or teenagers home from work, getting family members to medical appointments, and we can even get your pet to the vet,” Khylie said. Shebah currently employs six local women based around Beerwah, Landsborough, Maleny and Mooloolah. However, the service is always looking for more drivers. As well as the hinterland area, Khylie looks after the entire Sunshine Coast region and said many of their drivers were women aged over 40 looking for flexible and empowering income opportunities. “All our women drivers have nationally aligned working-with-children blue cards and Shebah is the only rideshare service in the country authorised to carry unaccompanied minors,” Khylie said.

Step towards more openness in council business

In a move that will greatly improve opportunities for community engagement in decision-making processes, the Sunshine Coast Council has announced that agenda reports to be discussed at council meetings will now be made public ten days before the actual meeting. Until now, the council had only met the minimum standard required, which was to make the agenda reports available two days before the meeting. This short amount of time made it very difficult for locals (and the local media) to have adequate time to read and digest the reports, let alone make enquiries about the reports and receive a response before the council meeting got under way. According to a brief council media release, the reason for increasing the timeframe is because it has to under recent legislative changes. The agenda reports will now be available to view by 5pm on the Monday ten days before the scheduled meeting. Unfortunately, minuted decisions of a council meeting aren’t published until at least ten days after the meeting. Let’s hope the council sees the need to improve openness and transparency by reducing that timeframe as well.

Maple Street Co-op set to expand By Sonia Isaacs Clark The heart of Maleny is expanding, with community retailer Maple Street Co-operative set to unveil a fabulous extension of their premises into what was formally The Maleny Food Co’s ice cream shop and fromagerie. Manager Charlotte Fogarty-Henderson said that while the much-loved community owned retailer had been operating from the current position for four decades, with more than 4,000 product lines, space was getting tight. So, when the neighbouring premises became available, the time was right to finally realise their desire to expand. “We have a 90-year lease so we are not going anywhere soon, and plans for a suitable expansion had been in the pipeline for a number of years,” Charlotte said. “On behalf of the team here at Maple Street Co-op, I can say we are really excited to be able to offer more organic food, more sustainable products and more options to shop local and keep jobs and money within our community.” With a focus on community collaboration, the team at Maple Street

included a desire to retain the feel, aroma and coziness of the original store while also allowing for more light and space. “Members said they wanted to keep the unique rustic atmosphere and warmth but with more natural light and space,” Charlotte said. “They also asked for better access for prams and wheelchairs, and more bulk self-serve options, so we listened and did it.” In keeping with their local community and sustainability ethos, work on the expansion involved local tradespeople, organisations, businesses and artisans using locally sourced and sustainable products. The history of the building and surrounding area has also been incorporated, with thoughtful inclusions such as making the window display benches from a local bunya pine saved from the mulcher and milled, kiln dried and stored for many years by the Blackall Range Woodcrafters Guild before being supplied to the co-op. The expansion project has taken around 12 months to come to fruition,

Business News Mooloolah tavern plans on-hold for childcare centre Plans for the long talked about tavern in Mooloolah seem to have taken a back seat, with an application made to Sunshine Coast Council for a childcare centre on most of the Mooloolah Road land where the tavern was originally earmarked. The recent application, made on behalf of the land owners Darryl Jennings (from Mooloolah Mitre 10) and Bridgeman Enterprises Pty Ltd (local landlord Vince Ferraro the sole director), will see a childcare centre built at 4-6 Mooloolah Road to cater for 79 children and 12 contact staff. According to planning documents submitted in support of the application, the centre is proposed to operate Monday-Friday, 6.30am-6.30pm. The centre will be positioned next to the residential lot at 10 Mooloolah Road, taking up about half the vacant land back towards Way Street. The driveway onto Mooloolah Road from the 25-bay carpark will be directly opposite the house at 5 Mooloolah Road.

The application acknowledges that there is an existing childcare centre (Little Munchkins) located just over 100m from the proposed centre, as well as C&K Kindergarten adjacent to the Mooloolah Valley Community Centre. In a childcare needs assessment report commissioned in support of the application, consultants Business Geographics Pty Ltd analysed the current and future childcare trends and regional demographics to determine the long-term demand for childcare services in the Mooloolah Valley area. They determined that there was a definite need for future growth in childcare places locally and noted that the existing Little Munchkins centre is situated on lands earmarked for resumption to accommodate the future expansion of the railway corridor. As the land is zoned as a local activity centre, a childcare facility is an acceptable use and the application has been deemed as code assessable, meaning no public notification and

For those not be aware of the tavern plans … back in 2008-2009 an application was put to the then Caloundra City Council to build a tavern and motel on the three now vacant blocks heading east from the Way Street and Mooloolah Road intersection. The tavern proposal created considerable local friction and it was reported at the time that 400 people attended a community meeting on the tavern development. The application received more than 220 public

submissions, for and against, as well as a petition containing 654 signatures in support of the tavern. The council subsequently refused the application as it was considered to be outside the scope and aims of the town planning scheme at the time. It also noted that a significant number of submissions were received that raised valid concerns about the impact of the proposed development on the character and residential amenity of Mooloolah. With the new childcare centre application occupying about half the land available, there still remains the opportunity for a tavern development on the residual half – albeit at a rather reduced scale.

New shops for Mooloolah

BiNGo Two new shops are set to be added to the Mooloolah streetscape if Sunshine Coast Council approves a recently submitted development application. The proposal is for a new free-standing building in front of the existing residential house at 3 Mooloolah Road (next to Mooloolah Family Clinic and Hillside development office). Built almost to the street front, the structure will have two tenancies totalling 165m2 (83.9 m2 and 81.9m2) and nine car parking spaces at the rear. The existing residential house will remain and continue to be used. Lyn McDonald, new principal at Beerwah High

Staff and students at Beerwah State High School recently welcomed their new principal Lyn McDonald, who said she felt extremely privileged to have been appointed to the permanent position and was looking forward to working with the community to support the school, students and staff. We caught up with Lyn to find out more about her background. Q: Tell us about yourself I started my teaching career on the Sunshine Coast at Burnside State High School over 30 years ago. Since then, I have taught at various locations across the state including Ayr SHS, Morayfield SHS, Narangba Valley SHS, Queensland Academy of Creative Industries and Dysart SHS. My teaching background is in the area of business and ICT digital technologies. In 2015 I completed a Masters of Education (Research) where I analysed the impact that professional development has on experienced teachers’ use of ICTs in their classrooms. I am a mum to two adult children and a very proud GG (grandma) to one little cherub. Q: How would you describe your leadership style? I’m a relational leader and I look forward to meeting new people and talking to staff, students, parents and the community to understand how I can

best lead and support the vision and improvement agenda of the school. Q: How was your introduction to Beerwah SHS and the community? Community News The story behind the photo By Sonia Isaacs Clark Landsborough local Gwen Davis was one of two hinterland winners in the Sunshine Coast Council 2021 Heritage Calendar photo competition (see GC&M News, October 28). Gwen had submitted a stunning group photo taken around 1916 featuring four siblings of the Hapgood family with three family friends at Cairncross Park Maleny. Gwen said the photo showed the Hapgood siblings when their family lived and worked at the property of Ted Thynne in Maleny.

She said looking at the photo from left to right, the young man on the far left was Harold White, who was the boyfriend of Dora Hapgood standing next to him. Sadly, Harold was killed in France during World War I. However, before shipping out he had finalised a will, leaving his beloved horse to Dora, which lived on as a family pet for many years. Next to Dora stands Harry Hapgood who enlisted in December 1916 and spent time in the Middle East with the 11th Light Horse Regiment (Australia), arriving in Egypt in 1917.

Harry recorded his time away through numerous photos and letters to his family back home. Gwen said that nearly 100 years later in 2015, his contribution to the Anzac legend was featured in a World War I centenary exhibition at the Landsborough Museum. In the photo Harry stands next his sister Edna, who stands next to Harry’s best friend Percy Green who also fought during the war. Both Harry and Percy returned home, though many of the battle-weary men, including Harry, had to wait several months after the end of the war before ships were made available to return them to Australia. Gwen said documents indicated it wasn’t until the end of August 1919 that Harry was able to finally disembark on home soil. Ellena Hapgood, known to all as Anne, stands next to Percy and she went on to marry a local man, Tom Fox. The man on the far right is family friend Frank Ford. Pinocchio at Bankfoot House

Pinocchio, the delightful story of the boy with a wooden heart, will be on show at Bankfoot House on Saturday and Sunday, December 5-6 at 11am and 1pm. Audiences both young and old will be captivated with The Drama Merchant presentation of this family classic, written in 1883 by Carlo Callodi. The show is staged as a re-creation of a live 1930s radio broadcast, including music, cheesy ads and news bulletins of the time. It’s a journey back to the golden age of radio as The Drama Merchant brings to life the enchanting story with voices, sound effects and audience participation that will make you want to revisit the Walt Disney animated classic. Climate change and community action Many in Maleny are hopeful about the future and want to take action on climate change at the local level. Which is why the next forum to be hosted by Maleny Forums will be on community responses to climate change. It will be held at the Maleny Community Centre on Tuesday, December 1 from 5.30–7.30pm. Attendance at the forum is free but as a COVID Safe event bookings are required via www.trybooking.com/BMVZJ. Preparation for the forum includes a short survey asking respondents what they already do in response to climate change and what they may consider doing in the future. The short survey

must be completed by November 25 at www.surveymonkey.com/r/RWBY5G3. Topics by guest speakers include an overview of the Sunshine Coast Council’s policy on climate change and examples of initiatives that have been adopted in other communities. This is an opportunity to gather with other community members to consider what may be possible in Maleny. The forum is hot on the heels of a disaster preparedness seminar presented by the Sunshine Coast Council and supported by Maleny Forums. Attendees learnt about developing their ‘what if’ plan ahead of the summer fire and storm season.

As it does every year, the school paused to remember the brave men and women who have fought and served to protect our freedom and to honour those who currently serve. This year the school gathered at its newly completed memorial garden. The beautiful garden, featuring a Lone Pine and four flag poles, is the result of many years of hard work, negotiation and collaboration between the school and the community.

The P&C worked tirelessly to raise the funds required with their efforts boosted by a grant from the Department of Veterans Affairs, as well as generous support from the Glasshouse Country RSL Sub Branch, the local Men’s Shed and Hanson’s Quarry. The finishing touches were provided by local federal and state members, Andrew Wallace and Andrew Powell, who provided the flags. The end result is a tranquil and beautiful tribute from a grateful community. It is the perfect spot to pause a while, pay respects and remember.

Shirley and Lloyd Larney

Over the years, Lloyd was involved in various local organisations, contributing his time and expertise to bring value, leadership and the true essence of community spirit to a wide range of community focussed activities. As an ex-serviceman with the Royal Australian Air Force and later the RAAF Reserve, Lloyd was involved with the RSL Maleny Sub Branch. On his return to civilian life he contributed to many local organisations including the Maleny State School P&C Association, Maleny Scouts, Maleny Bush Fire Brigade (deputy fire warden), the Maleny Bowls Club, Uniting Church of Maleny, Neighbourhood Watch, Rotary Club of Maleny (president 1992-1993), Maleny Show Society (life member) and Erowal Retirement Village (board president during the construction phase in the 1980s). Lloyd was also the inaugural group leader of the Maleny SES Group, which officially formed in February 1982. He continued in that role for an impressive 28 years until September 2010. Over the years Lloyd’s outstanding contribution to his community was also recognised with a number of awards including Rotary Paul Harris Fellow 1989, Centenary Medal 2001, Australia Day Achievement Award 2002, Caloundra Citizen of the Year

2004, SES Meritorious Medal, Medal of the Order of Australia 2009 and in 2019 the Maleny Show awarded him honorary life membership. Born in Murwillumbah on St Patrick’s Day, March 17, 1929, Lloyd was the third son of Rupert and Kate Larney. He had four siblings - Terry, Jack, Max and Glad. Max is the only surviving family member today. The family moved several times before finally settling in Maleny, with Lloyd attending Witta School. The family bought a home in Maleny, which later became the family home of Lloyd and his wife Shirley from 1969. Lloyd and Shirley were married in 1953 and had a son, Michael, and daughter, Kerry. In later years, the family was blessed with the love of grandchildren and great grandchildren. Lloyd first joined the RAAF in 1947, serving for 22 years including active service overseas in British Malaya, Korea and Vietnam. He later transferred to the RAAF Reserve for an additional 14 years until his discharge in 1984. In Maleny, Lloyd bought the school transport business from his father, where he and Shirley gained many friendships. The couple also enjoyed long and happy associations in Maleny including the Rotary Club, RSL Club,

passed away peacefully surrounded by family on October 24

SES and the Show Society. Shirley said something that might surprise people was that Lloyd loved and enjoyed the music and singing of operas and watching André Rieu concerts. He also loved gardening, a game of bowls, watching cricket, the company of good friends and most certainly a game of bridge. In paying tribute to her husband, Shirley said a beautiful life had come to an end but Lloyd had died as he lived - everyone’s friend, with a cheerful smile and a heart of gold.

Volunteers go on a famil Maleny Visitors Information Centre volunteers recently had an informative morning at the Maleny Pioneer Village on their local famil. The history of the village was explained by Desley Malone and included a visit to Priscilla Cottage built in 1906, Lawley House, the doll display in the 1903 Glenferna and an old police lockup. The recent open day at the Maleny Pioneer Village was a great success with visitor numbers exceeding all expectations. The incredible new doll collection proved very popular and there was a lot of interest in the local family history. There were also quite a few long admiring glances at the wonderful cars on display.

Landsborough Cub Scouts have been busy working on a project called Messengers of Peace. It’s an international initiative that encourages Scouts to promote peace through work with others, their community and the environment. The project has seen Landsborough Cubs making possum boxes for the registered wildlife refuge at Rocky Creek Scout Camp Grounds on Old Gympie Road. Landsborough Cubs Aimee and Chloe said Rocky Creek was a place where injured animals were released when they were healthy and good again. They said they felt very lucky to have their Scout den located on the grounds. The Cubs love that their possum boxes are going to provide shelter and a breeding area for local animals. “Possums and a variety of other animals come here when they are

homeless, and this place provides refuge for any animal that comes here but especially possums,” Aimee and Chloe said. Landsborough Cubs and Joeys meet on Tuesday nights, and the Scouts and Venturer Scouts meet on Thursday nights. Aimee and Chloe said that Joeys, Cubs, Scouts and Venturers were able to attend lots of camps and were taught life skills and how to survive in the wild. They wanted to encourage others to join because they said kids can learn heaps, and if kids are interested they should join Scouts too because the leaders always help out. Our U12 boys and U14 boys came away as premiers of their divisions, which was an awesome result. Our senior men’s player Cameron Nairn won the Sunshine Coast player of the year and the Golden Boot with 27 goals – fantastic effort Cameron! The BeeGees junior presentations were held on Sunday, November 15 with some of our club’s up-and-coming stars acknowledged on the day. Energex’s free SMS update service With summer storm season prone to causing power issues, Energex says now’s the time to sign up for their free electricity outage and restoration SMS notifications. The service also send property owners an SMS five days before any planned maintenance power interruptions in their street. Energex’s Michael Dart said the SMS service was ideal for helping people plan their lives around unexpected and planned disruptions to power to their house. “At Energex we know any power interruption can be inconvenient but these SMS texts will allow you to better plan when they occur,” Michael said. “For example, when our crews have to carry out maintenance and must cut power we’ll always send

$2 trips from Peachester to Beerwah Have you tried the Peachester to Beerwah Flexilink transport service? For just $2 residents who live between Peachester and Beerwah can hop on the Sunshine Coast Council’s Flexilink transport service thanks to the council’s transport levy. Division 1 councillor Rick Baberowski said the service was available Monday to Saturday with three daily return services available for the Peachester to Beerwah service. The route starts at Fortune Avenue/Storrs Road in Peachester and travels along Peachester Road to Simpson Street in Beerwah. “This fantastic service has been operating since 2010 and provides residents living between Peachester and Beerwah with the convenience of very affordable and reliable transport to Beerwah where they can connect with bus and train services and access many other great services in Beerwah,” Cr Baberowski said. “It’s very easy to access this Flexilink service. All you need to do is phone 1300 511 163 two hours ahead of departure time or by 9pm the previous night for the first morning services,” he said. A Peachester resident who regularly uses the service said it was very handy and convenient to use. Cr Baberowski said passenger numbers needed to increase to ensure the Peachester to Beerwah Flexilink transport service continued. “Unfortunately, passenger numbers on the Peachester

On sale will be great examples of work members have created including leatherwork, woodwork and metalwork as well motor mowers, whipper snippers and a selection of second-hand items. A sausage sizzle and cold drinks will also be available. The 50 or so mature-age local blokes who are part of the Glasshouse Country Men’s Shed have created a variety of items that will make great Christmas gifts including their leatherwork belts, whips and wallets. The woodworking crew have made wooden bowls, breadboards, native bee boxes and lovely handcrafted pens. The metalworking fellas have been creating lasercut signage, weather vanes and sundials as well as house names and numbers. Glasshouse Country Men’s Shed is a not-for-profit community organisation focussed on improving the health and wellbeing of local mature and retired men. Calorie counting was forgotten as members of the Caloundra Evening VIEW Club finally returned indoors at the Caloundra Power Boat Club for their monthly morning tea. The friendly club has 110 members and holds regular dinners and a variety of social functions with the important aim of funding educational expenses for nine disadvantaged local students. The club is one of six on the Sunshine Coast, including the Glasshouse Country VIEW Club, who meet during the day and hold their monthly morning teas and meetings on Wednesdays at the Mooloolah Valley Country Club.

Get into the Christmas spirit The Maleny Playhouse will be alive with a variety of entertainment to lure you into the spirit of Christmas. With restrictions now lifted, the Maleny Players have seating capacity for 50 people. The show, Live@ThePlayhouse will include short plays, songs, skits, singing and monologues to entertain the audience. The event will bring together a range of performers including some of the Maleny

junior players and young adult players. Drinks will be available at the bar, so come along and enjoy the ambience of a community theatre. For decades Maleny has hosted an awesome Christmas Festival and Street Party in Maple Street, and the town will be rocking again this year with plenty of festive fun. This year’s event will be a Christmas concert at the Maleny Showgrounds on Friday, December 11 from 6pm (gates open at 5pm). Maleny Commerce president Nicole Hilton said the night would be all about the community. “It is being hosted by our community for the community and is a COVID Safe event,” Nicole said. The evening will include a Christmas choir backed by a 30-piece Salvation Army band, as well as a great bunch of talented local musicians including Lucy Gallant, Kelly Cork, Gemma Kirby, Bobby the Kid, and Jon Hunt and Georgie Germano. It will end with an all-star finale. Those attending the event can also support local service groups, which will be offering food and bar services. Maleny Apex, Maleny Blackall Range Lions and Maleny Neighbourhood Centre will be catering with plenty of food choices on offer, from garlic prawns on skewers to sausage sizzle, curry bowls and more, as well as sweets. Beerwah CWA gets festive The CWA Hall on Simpson Street will be transformed into a fabulous pop-up Christmas shop from Monday to Friday, December 7-11, opening from 8am daily. The talented CWA members have been busy creating a wonderful array of festive crafts and delicious homebaked treats that can be eaten in the hall while enjoying a cuppa or taken home to share with family. The week-long initiative is a fantastic opportunity to shop local for handmade and unique Christmas gifts while also supporting our talented local creatives and artists. At the end of the week, on Saturday, December 12, the Beerwah Tower Green will come alive with a highly anticipated family-friendly event - the festive market extravaganza from 8am-12noon. It will be packed with stalls, Christmas-themed entertainment, locally produced art, craft, jewellery, gifts and homewares, as well as an abundance of traditional home-baked cakes, scones, slices and festive cookies. There will also be free children’s entertainment, a dance showcase, free festive photos (unfortunately Santa

cannot make a personal appearance this year) and live music by young and talented musicians. Hosted by the CWA Beerwah branch with the support of the Sunshine Coast Council, this year will be the branch’s 9th Christmas market. QCWA Beerwah is a not-for-profit organisation supporting the local community for 70 years. Both the pop-up shop and festive market extravaganza are a wonderful way to celebrate the creative community of the Glasshouse Country region while also raising funds for local community groups. The Lions boxed Christmas cakes, available in two sizes, are now on sale throughout the hinterland. The delicious traditional fruit cakes are a wonderful way to prepare for your Christmas feasts while supporting the great work of our community clubs. We’ve had a quick scout around to find some of the places where the local Lions clubs will be selling their cakes, which retail for $13 for a 1kg and $17 for 1.5kg cake, so get in quick before they sell out. While locals can buy the cakes ready to ice or decorate themselves from local businesses, Maleny Blackall Range Lions Club has gone a little extra with their efforts and are also selling smaller cakes (using the larger cakes cut into quarters) that have been beautifully hand decorated by the ladies of the club at a number of local outlets for $15. Hinterland Families In conversation with Associate Professor Michael Nagel Associate Professor Michael Nagel is a teacher and academic at the University of the Sunshine Coast. He has delivered hundreds of workshops and seminars, as well as authored and coauthored numerous books and articles related to neurological development in children and adolescents. Regarded as one of Australia’s foremost experts in child development, we caught up Michael to find out more. Q: How long have you been working in the field of child development? I have been in this field for most of my professional life but really began to focus on the developing paediatric brain since 2000. I have always had a sincere interest in child development and in children’s behaviour, and how schools can inadvertently disadvantage students by not understanding how the mind and body work. Q: In your latest book ‘Educating and Raising Boys’ you have looked to recent advances in neuroscience to examine how the hardwiring in boys’ brains influence the way they learn. What are some key points? Both boys and girls learn in similar ways. However, it is how they behave

that can have an impact on their learning. For example, most boys are in perpetual motion and often find themselves having to sit still and ‘not fidget’ in an increasingly sedentary educational system. This puts them at a distinct disadvantage and often sees them in trouble. Simply put, by nature males are designed to move and fidgety behaviour in boys is generally not a behavioural problem. Movement is so important, so in a classroom environment, for example, giving boys something to hold like a stress ball can be beneficial, or lead them through a series of activities to allow them time to move from high intensity to a lower intensity, especially after running around at lunchtime. We often hear how boys are easily distracted compared to girls and again there are neurological differences that can underpin this behaviour. In many respects, schools are more hospitable environments for girls. Q: How can we better support their learning growth? It is important to know differences in neurophysiology and development to best support the needs of boys. Again, for example, almost all aspects

Early uni offers After dealing with COVID-19 interruptions and a new university entry system, more than 1,300 school leavers have snapped up the chance to secure early offers to the University of the Sunshine Coast – up 83 percent on last year. USC released its final round of early offers on Friday, November 20, the last day of school for Queensland’s year 12 students. USC vice-chancellor Professor Helen Bartlett said while USC’s early offer guarantee program had been steadily growing in popularity each year, there had been an influx this year of students seeking security around their future before finishing school. “It is pleasing to be able to provide 28

certainty and help relieve pressure on the current year 12s who have had to deal with the pandemic disrupting their learning and adapt to the new ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank) university entry system,” Professor Bartlett said. Until recently, USC was the only Queensland university to consistently administer an early offer guaranteed program, with most of the others only implementing similar schemes this year. There are 300 schools currently registered for USC’s Early Offer Guarantee across Australia, including every eligible high school in its catchment from Brisbane to the Fraser Coast. Q: What are some tips for better understanding problematic behaviour? Through advancements in research over the past 20 years or so, we are just now starting to understand how the human brain works. My biggest tip is to consider whether the problematic behaviour is an authentic problem, or a matter of perception and understanding? Q: What do boys need to allow them to flourish? A better understanding of how their brains work, of their endless energy and physicality, and plenty of positive male role models. Teen boys also need rites of passage into manhood and a better understanding of positive masculinity. The word ‘toxic’ attached to masculinity is toxic to a boy’s mental health and not helpful. Try to engage in discussion with your

Also ask them if that person is a representation of good behaviour and do they think they are a positive role model. Harold the hungry toilet Unitywater marked World Toilet Day on November 19 with the launch of a new children’s book that teaches what should and shouldn’t be flushed down the loo. Unitywater worker and now author, Andrew Hanifin, was inspired to write ‘Harold the Hungry Toilet’, aimed at young children and their parents, during the initial COVID-19 toilet paper shortage. “I’ve had the book in the pipeline for a while, but the COVID-19 toilet paper shortage and resulting increase in blockages in our sewerage network caused by things like wet wipes, was a real push to publish it,” Andrew said. In the book, created in collaboration with Unitywater and illustrated by Sunshine Coast artist Kirstin Gail, Harold teaches a young kid named Billy how to flush responsibly by only putting the three Ps down the loo – pee, poo and (toilet) paper. Andrew said he hoped the book would encourage both parents and their kids to love their loo. “I’ve

had a great time and a few giggles reading ‘Harold the Hungry Toilet’ to my kids and their friends,” Mr Hanifin said. Story time is not only a wonderful opportunity to bond with kids, but also to sneak in some learning too. You Said It E: Beerwah regional centre redevelopment

I would like to congratulate and support James Aitken on his letter about the proposed regional centre development on Roys Road (GC&M News, November 11). As James mentioned, it is becoming increasingly impossible to jump in the car and duck into Caloundra to do the shopping or go to the specialty shops we don’t have in the hinterland centres. Surely a new business development that will bring those specialty shops to the local area would be good business. The re-branding and re-vamping of what was the Coochin Creek Co-op is proof of what can be done to keep up, and what a brilliant job they have done. Along with The Bunker’s new premises and their great pricing, I shop there for all my timber products rather than drive to Bunnings. However, I still believe we need a Bunnings store in the Beerwah Glass House area because they will offer many items we have difficulty finding in our smaller local stores, not because the local businesses don’t offer good service but simply because they don’t have the space to carry the stock that a Bunnings store can carry. Beerwah, Glass House and Landsborough are no longer the sleepy little railway towns they once were. They have become vibrant business areas and will continue to grow, and if our current business centres don’t keep up with the rapidly growing population, we will get left behind. People who seem to think the introduction of another business centre would split the town in half and endanger the livelihood of current businesses are very wrong. A bit of competition is good for everybody and will enhance the area rather than diminish it. However, if the new centre is approved, we don’t need McDonald’s. There is already a Macca’s only ten minutes away at the twin servos on the

Voting a minor party first and then a major, gives the minor party strength to “keep the bastards honest”. Weed workshop

I recently attended an invasive weeds workshop run by Jeanette Nobes at Maleny RSL. Jeanette is a consultant on invasive weeds and is passionate about dealing with these invaders before they completely overtake the beautiful environment on the Blackall Range. There were handouts available showing how to deal effectively with these pests. Many of the woody weeds such as privet and camphor are overwhelming our native plants. As a consequence, the natural foods that wildlife prefer, are squeezed out. Jeanette pointed out that these weeds are successful because they seed prolifically every year whereas our indigenous fruit-bearing plants often only seed once every 5-20 years, putting them at a distinct disadvantage. Because of this many of our native birds and animals are compelled to eat the fruits of the

weeds, compounding the problem by further spreading them. Our wildlife is under enormous pressure with our expanding population and increased demand for housing. Many of us plant nectar producing garden plants that do not produce fruit for our rainforest dwellers, thereby encouraging nectar eaters, such as noisy miners and rainbow lorikeets, to the detriment of our fruit eaters. I would encourage all residents to learn more about the impact of invasive weeds and attend workshops, if offered again, to learn why and how to deal with these weeds. Sunshine Coast Council has resources on their website under environment to assist weed identification and native plants best suited to replacing woody weeds. There are many lovely native plants such as blueberry ash, lilly pillies and sandpaper figs that will enhance the environment and provide native fruits for our wildlife. Meredyth Sauer Flaxton

There were so many extra rules and regulations that needed to be followed and there was obviously a lot of extra organisation going on behind the scenes to make the night flow so beautifully. Maleny Soldiers Memorial Hospital The official centenary celebrations for the Maleny Soldiers Memorial Hospital, which was originally established as a private hospital to serve the returned servicemen and women of the district, was highlighted in the GC&M News October 28 edition. While COVID-19 meant that plans for a large community celebration were unable to go ahead this year, staff and community members involved with the much-loved rural institution hope they can come together in 2021 to celebrate on May 21, the date the hospital was gazetted in 1920 as a general public hospital. We caught up with Pam Porter who has been an enrolled nurse at the facility for more than 45 years. She generously shared her memories of

her time at both the original hospital site (located near the new Maleny Ambulance Station) and the current building, which opened in 1987. Pam said that like many from the area she was born at the hospital. In her early married life she started work at the hospital, providing six weeks leave relief in 1969. A few years later in May 1975, Pam was called in to provide holiday leave relief again but ended up swapping her relief work for a permanent position. In December that year she started fulltime work at the hospital. Pam remembers that when she started, a couple of staff would care for 10-12 patients at a time. Although it could get quite busy at times, staff were always able to manage the workload. “It was a lot different then. There were no after-hours visits and once we shut the doors it was rare to have people come at night,” Pam said. “Patient reports were written up three times a day in one big book. “We also had the best parties with a wonderful spread of food for any staff who were leaving to get married or retiring.

“There was always wonderful rapport Pam Porter around between all the 1980 staff and the kitchen ladies and helpers. Cook made wonderful meals and we all shared a lot of laughs as well as sadness when we lost a patient we had cared for,” Pam said. She has fond memories of the town centenary in 1978 when staff made up a hospital float and everyone dressed up, including wardsman Bill Penney who dressed as Dr Parer, the longserving medical superintendent of the hospital who was Maleny’s doctor from the 1930s to the 1950s. Pam remembers that after the new facility was built, the old hospital was dismantled in 1988 with the various buildings relocated across the district. “It was interesting for both staff and locals to watch the old hospital being taken away. I think the old maternity ward was taken at 11 o’clock at night, and a few trucks over time got bogged after heavy rain trying to do the removals,” Pam said.

She recalls that the private end of the old hospital was taken to Corks Pocket Road in Reesville, and the kitchen, domestic dining and the wards were relocated to another property at Reesville. The maternity section was moved to Samford and the nurses quarters moved to Avocado Lane in Maleny. Pam said that while many things had changed over the years, the sense of caring for the community and patient care were still priorities. She has loved being part of such a special country hospital that holds fond memories for many in the district.

Living - Arts Exquisite nature photography at Vianta

Hall offering exhibition space

A new exhibition of beautiful nature photography by Graeme Toft will be on show during December at Vianta Arts in Beerwah. Graeme is a dedicated nature photographer who specialises in landscapes and Australian birds. A lover of our flora and fauna since he was a child, discovering photography more than ten years ago gave added inspiration to his main passion of birds. He has travelled extensively throughout Asia and other parts of the world photographing nature and exotic bird species. Graeme has sold his images in North America and Europe and has taught photography on the Sunshine Coast. He has also had a weekly talkback radio show on the ABC discussing local birds and photography with interested Sunshine Coast and Brisbane residents. Although the images to be displayed at this exhibition at Vianta Arts represent just a fraction of those he has taken over the years, they give an insight into his passion and the patience required to get the right shot.

The Landsborough School of the Arts Memorial Hall has opened its doors to artists, offering the venue for their works to be put on public display. Artists have the choice of their art being for sale or just for display. The offer is at no cost to the artists who want to showcase their art in the hall. The concept is to have a rotation of artists throughout the year. The first artist will be Britta Kuttner from Mount Mellum. Britta describes painting as her language for passing on positive feelings about happiness, freedom and harmony. “When I work with colour I feel in touch with nature and when people see my work, they feel peaceful and relaxed,” Britta said. “My work encompasses a range of styles from landscapes and seascapes, to the human form and still life combined with fantasy.” A meet-the-artist time slot will be included at the Landsborough Markets so artists can engage with visitors. High-powered Sunshine Coast couple Barbara and Allan Pease are known around the world for their work in the field of body language, communications and relationship resilience. They have stepped into the role of ambassadors for the charity ‘no more fake smiles’ with gusto. They have declared that Australia should be mortified by statistics showing almost 15,000 Australian children under the age of 19 reported sexual abuse last year. When Barbara met ‘no more fake smiles’ co-founder Tracey Morris and heard the heart-breaking story of her daughter Annie Jones’s two years of sexual abuse at the hands of her stepfather, all of that changed. In fact, as Barbara came to know Tracey as a friend and witnessed the bravery, resilience and authenticity behind the charity, it was Barbara who offered to step into the role as ambassador alongside Allan. The Sunshine Coast-based organisation recently celebrated its first birthday, marking five years since Annie had the courage to disclose the abuse to

her mother, prompting Tracey to take decisive and immediate action to keep her daughter safe and ensure the offender – her husband at the time was brought to justice. The charity also facilitates appropriate therapeutic services for victims of child sexual abuse and secondary victims – the family members who are as affected but most often overlooked by other support services. The charity is looking for support in every capacity, from volunteers for committees through to people wanting to include ‘no more fake smiles’ as the beneficiary of their fundraising events or simply giving monetary donations to allow them to support more families. We all know older people in our community. However, it is likely we don’t know if they are hiding some form of abuse, not necessarily physical. They may not be sure if the people entrusted with their care are overstepping their responsibilities. Perhaps we could be subjected to abuse in the future and not know how to deal with it, or how to retain our rights as we age. The Speak Up Now Maleny and Blackall Range committee will host an elder abuse forum in the Maleny RSL Hall on Tuesday, December 1, at 10.30am. The forum is open to all and will start with a complimentary morning tea provided by the CWA and Lions before the forum starts at 11am. A group spokesperson said that as well as physical and emotional abuse, elders often suffered abuse of power by their carers, which could include family members. Staff at the Suncoast Community Legal Service have written the play ‘Piano

Forte’ that raises issues of elder abuse and the pitfalls involved with wills and enduring power of attorney. A video of the 40-minute play will be shown at the forum to provide a fun and easily accessible way of introducing these issues to older people. “We were keen to bring it to the attention of anyone who cares for older people and also for the elders in our community,” the spokesperson said. Julian Porter, from Suncoast Community Legal Service, and Tove Easton, from Easton Lawyers, will also speak on the day and answer questions from the audience following the forum, which should close by 12.30pm. Breast cancer is so common it is likely you have a friend or relative who has had it. After all, one in seven Queensland women have been diagnosed with breast cancer. To ensure breast cancer is detected as early as possible, it’s important that women have regular breast screens. Until December 16, the BreastScreen Queensland’s mobile service is at the Beerwah Community Hall providing free breast screening. Kelly Hart, health promotion officer at BreastScreen Queensland Sunshine Coast, says mammograms or breast screens are the most effective, proven method of detecting breast cancer early. “Screening brings forward the time at which breast cancer can be diagnosed, so that the cancer can be found when it’s small, confined to the breast and hasn’t spread to the lymph nodes,” she said. Women aged 50-74 years are strongly encouraged to have regular two-yearly breast screens. The BreastScreen Queensland program is provided free to women aged 40 and over.

Get online and be connected! In any community, and especially in a region like ours, some of our older residents find it difficult to access the services they need. Others can become socially isolated. The internet can make a big difference to both challenges but it is not without risks of its own. People aged over 70 can be vulnerable online and they are sometimes understandably concerned about getting involved. However, it does not need to be that way. I recently joined a group of older residents in the hinterland who are supporting each other, with the federal government’s help, to make the most of what the digital world can offer. At Twin Cedars Lifestyle Community, hinterland local and all-round top bloke John Pozzey leads a group of 20 residents who meet for computer classes every Friday morning. I recently went along to celebrate the new addition to their group. They applied for a federal government grant to celebrate Get Online Week through the Morrison government’s BeConnected program. The group received $1,500 and used the money to buy new iPads and a new monitor to help develop their skills. It was fantastic to see how much they have learnt and to hear about how this knowledge is helping Twin Cedars residents stay connected with their families and friends during this difficult time. The Friends of Mary Cairncross Association (FMCA) publication ‘The Magic of Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve – A Celebration of Art and Nature’, edited by Les Hall, has won the prestigious 2020 Whitley Award in the Local Zoology category from the Royal Zoological Society (NSW). This cements the reputation of this exquisite (much more than just a coffee table) book and acknowledges the many hours of dedicated work by the editor, the many artists and scientists, and the executive members of FMCA. All are to be congratulated. The FMCA recently reached a significant milestone. Members celebrated our 21st birthday with a delightfully decadent morning tea at The Orangery Maleny. In other news, a new exhibition theme has been unveiled at the Mary Cairncross Discovery Centre named Operation Botanica – Undercover in the Rainforest. The displays highlight some of the commonly unknown dangers for rainforest trees that lurk in our midst. These conditions threaten the very livelihood of the forest and deserve to be more generally known in the community. Noticeboard Maleny social badminton group The badminton group plays every Monday night at the Maleny High School main hall from 6.45-8.30pm. Longer hours for Beerwah Post Office Australia Post is getting ready for a Christmas unlike any other by keeping post office doors open longer at more than 500 locations as it moves into its busiest festive period ever. Residents in Beerwah can visit their local post office six days a week during the extended retail hours of 9am-5pm Monday-Friday and 9–11am Saturday from today until December 23.

Christmas at Maleny Uniting Church While the Christmas Tree Festival is not happening at the Maleny Uniting Church on Maleny-Landsborough Road this year, their enthusiasm for recognising the season hasn’t dimmed. The long spells of dry weather can make your soils water repellent. Use soil wetting granules to make the most of any storm rainfall. Wet humid weather is heaven for vegetable caterpillars and grasshoppers. Hand remove or spray with a natural spray (such as Dipel or Success) every couple of days. Remember that water washes any sprays off, so repeat after rain or overhead irrigation. Paw paw trees that have grown too tall can cut be cut back now. Cut the stem to 1m off the ground and cover the cut top with a large can. Prune back your grevilleas by a third and feed them with a low phosphorus fertiliser. This simulates being burnt back in a bushfire and stimulates them to grow more branches – more branches means more flowers. Don’t forget to slip-slop-slap when you go out in the garden, even if it is for a short period. Try to do most of the work in the early mornings or

the late afternoons so you miss the heat of the day. Take a water bottle with you too keeping well hydrated is important. Nutgrass will be actively growing now. If you want to dig them out, you’ll have to be like an archaeologist and carefully excavate along the fine underground stems to uncover and remove the ‘nuts’, otherwise they will just regrow. Or you can carefully brush a strong glyphosate and water mixture onto the leaves and repeat when the remaining nuts shoot. If you have a lot of the weeds, spray with a special nutgrass herbicide containing halosulfuron (most common brand is called Sempra). It’s expensive but effective. Hygiene is terribly important in the control of black spot on roses. On a regular basis gather up any diseased leaves that have fallen on the ground and dispose of them in the bin. Don’t put them in the compost heap. Lawn grubs are about from now on.

At the first sign spray with one of the commercial lawn grub products. If you have magpies feeding their young, steer clear of a chemical treatment (as they will feed the treated grubs to the chicks) and use soapy water to bring the grubs to the surface for the magpies to clean up for you. Protect your tomatoes from fruit flies by using an exclusion net or spraying with one of the insecticides registered for the job. I bag all of my tomatoes when they are small using a paper bag held on with a peg. Tip: Freeze tomatoes whole in plastic bags to use in cooking later. When you want to use then, run them under a tap while frozen and their skins come right off. Tunnelling ants are active and can cause headaches in pot plants. Drown them by watering with soapy water, maybe with a few drops of a garden insecticide. Tidy up the garden for Santa. He doesn’t think too highly of a messy garden.

We recently took nine swimmers to the Gympie long course swimming meet and came away with 23 PBs, 17 medals, one pool record and one age champion. Iris broke the Gympie pool record for 13-year-old girls in the 50m breaststroke with a time of 38.38

seconds and Kael was awarded the multiclass girls 14 year age champion. Our swimmers try their hardest, support each other and have fun. We pass on our thanks to Charlie, our awesome coach, whose expertise, support, encouragement and advice is so appreciated by us and the time he gives to these kids means the world. Well done all round.

Ken and Janelle squeaked ahead of Donna and Wallace 5-4 at the same time as Stuart Craig and Val managed a 5-all draw with Vince. Croquet is best played in an upright position. Only rolls tend to move most good players away from this stance, which allows the best view of the line for a shot. In the attached photo Greg Whymark, from Bribie club, playing in the first division section of our recent tournament, abandons the normal and drops to the ground to line up an

important peel through rover. He made the peel and went on to win the game. Thursday, November 19 saw pleasant conditions on the lawn. Kath Smith and Donna played a 7-all draw. Vince and Sarah were behind for most of their game against Ken and Val until, with stumps about to be drawn, Vince made a game winning break to take the presidential team ahead 18–17. Well done Vince. Helen and Wallace scored 16 against Bev Sockhill and Janelle 7 with Wallace pegging out his ball. Our excellent lawns are at the Maleny Showground.
