Over the years our team at Glasshouse Country & Maleny News has loved being able to keep each week’s edition full of positive stories, focussing on what so many of us love about the local area. In this time of COVID-19 and as we enter this period of uncertainty and challenges, I think that more than ever it will be important for us to continue in this role and work towards bringing our communities together. For more than 30 years we have been able to do this through the continued support of hundreds of predominately small and even micro businesses who buy advertising with us, which allows us to share all of our local happenings. We have already seen a significant cancellation of advertising due to the current economic crisis facing businesses, which is only going to continue and worsen due to the very hard times ahead for business owners and workers in our local communities. Proactive action from local businesses There’s no denying the coronavirus (COVID-19) situation is changing so rapidly it can be tricky to keep up. However, local businesses, with many already feeling the pinch, have been and continue to be proactive, ensuring the safety of their patrons and staff remains their highest priority. Many local businesses, Glasshouse Country & Maleny News included, have been quick to implement protocols to ensure shops, offices and venues are operating in line with government and industry recommendations to reduce the risk of contamination. For many it’s business as usual, so let’s all continue to support them. The GC&M News office has requested that, where possible, customers and clients direct their enquiries via phone or email to limit unnecessary social interaction. Another local office proactively combatting the situation is First National Beerwah, which has put precautions in place with sensible steps to avoid direct contact. Principal Aaron Peckitt said the temporary changes are intended to underpin the essential functions of the property market as well as to reassure customers that all necessary precautions are being observed. “While the presence of coronavirus certainly requires us to observe some sensible precautions, the business of real estate continues and it's essential that we support clients who are selling their homes as well as the needs of our tenants and landlords,” Aaron said. Taking advice from the federal government and Queensland Hotels Association, Beerwah Hotel is open for business as usual, with some changes to procedures including implementation of social distancing guidelines.

Last week the hotel introduced changes within its bistro area, with tables now spaced 1.5m apart. This means there is less seating available and customers are advised to book ahead. The difficult decision was also made to temporarily close the kids’ play area. As things change the hotel is ensuring that locals are kept up-to-date by statements on Facebook. SoulQi Acupuncture and Massage is following extra hygiene procedures to make sure clients and therapists are as safe as possible. Along with using antibacterial and paper bed and face hole covers and increasing cleaning of their surfaces, the team has asked clients to postpone treatment if they are experiencing cold or flu symptoms for the safety of others. SoulQi business owner Kaz Thomas-Roby said that she needed people to come through the doors to keep the business open. The Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce is committed to keeping local businesses up to date with as much information as possible through the Chamber of Commerce and Industry Queensland, as well as from federal, state and local governments. Chamber president Ursula Starkovsky said the chamber was available to support local businesses if needed. “There are a range of assistances available to local business, and it is important that business owners and operators have an easy way to find out what support is being offered.” Ursula encourages business owners to email the chamber at info@glasshousecountrychamber.com.au or follow its Facebook page for continual updates as they are received. Local News Candidates give their views on Coles With the Sunshine Coast Council election this Saturday, March 28, local Beerwah traders wanted to know the views of the Division 1 candidates regarding the Coles development proposal on the eastern side of Beerwah. More than 50 locals recently gathered at The Coffee Club in Beerwah for a forum and feedback session to hear what three of the four candidates thought of the contentious development. According to a group of local businesses and traders who oppose the development, the location has the potential to cause considerable problems, such as planning scheme conflicts, traffic concerns, separation of the retail precincts and loss of light industrial lands, not to mention the considerable commercial damage such a development could do to existing small local

Division 1 incumbent Rick Baberowski said that he is restricted with what he can say about an application currently being assessed due to not wanting to portray perceptions of bias that could be used by the applicant later. “The applicants know that they have a very big job ahead of them if they proceed to try to convince council that the development should proceed in an area where the zoning is wrong,” Rick said. “There have already been significant information requests made by council and the state interests, flagging major concerns with the current proposal.” Rick said locals would have a considerable opportunity to have input when – and if – the application proceeds to the point of public submissions being called. Jenny Broderick has major reservations with the development being so far outside the planning scheme. “We need to ensure that the integrity of the planning scheme is maintained,” Jenny told the recent forum. “Talking with businesses and residents, I’m hearing that people aren’t generally against more shopping variety in Beerwah, but they are expressing their concerns over the location.” Jenny wants to ensure the development does not detract from the current country town feel of Beerwah.

Caring for the Hinterland community for over 20 yrs

“Any development must be able to show that it is adding to – not taking away from – the culture of a town,” Jenny said. “It’s important to bring energy into town.” Mark Davis agreed the location seemed to be the major issue in his discussions with locals. “If planned correctly, Beerwah could become a shopping destination for the region, with people coming into the area rather than travelling away for their shopping,” Mark said. “I can’t see that putting retail into a light industrial area is a good idea in the long run for the growth of Beerwah as a modern town. “We should be encouraging the use of existing zoned lands for their purposes before allowing growth into other areas with different zonings.” Raelene Ellis, representing the Queensland Greens, gave her apologies for the forum as she was in Brisbane for work that evening.

When asked after the meeting, Raelene said she was opposed to the development going ahead, saying that the proposal will split the town and endanger the viability of existing small businesses in Beerwah. “Proposals that do not accord with the town plan ought to only be approved after significant consultation with the public and a clear message from the residents (or at least a majority of residents) that this is a change to their area that they want,” Raelene said. “That is not what I am currently hearing.” To read more about who the candidates are and what they stand for, check out the Glasshouse Country & Maleny News election website by visiting www.gcnews.com.au.

Farewell to Cr Jenny McKay By Sonia Clark After 20 years in local government, Cr Jenny McKay is preparing to hang up her hat and pass the baton as the representative for Division 5 on the Sunshine Coast Council. Cr McKay has been a tireless advocate for the hinterland and surrounding communities, and has certainly set the bar high when it comes to committed community engagement and advocacy. Her genuine care and love for her local community, accessibility and a long-standing commitment to best represent the interests of the majority of her constituents will be greatly missed. GC&M News caught up with Cr McKay to get some insights into her time as a local councillor and her future plans, and to find out if she had any tips about the role for her replacement. Cr McKay says she has always had a strong interest in local governance, particularly the ways local government can partner with communities to encourage and support community building. Some of her notable achievements have been her involvement in the development of larger infrastructure projects celebrating the stunning natural beauty and amenity of the hinterland, such as the Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve Discovery Centre. However, Cr McKay has equally taken great pride in the achievement of smaller community-driven projects that have resulted in local parks and walking paths.

“This role has never been about the pay packet. The joy for me has been the privilege to be able to work with such a diverse cross section of people and to try to understand what real life is like for them,” Cr McKay said. “I have spent many hours travelling the roads throughout Division 5 over the years, which has proven to be a great asset in helping me better understand the issues people face. I think it is important that as a local representative you really take the time to get close to people and invest in the communities that have elected you.” She believes that to properly represent such a broadly located electorate takes a lot of hard work and personal commitment. Over the years Cr McKay has made it a priority to attend as many local meetings, events and community groups as possible to help her better understand what she calls the unique language of each community. She said it had been an absolute privilege to represent the hinterland communities. “It is really a 24/7 job and you need to be committed to having your boots on the ground – to meet people, to get to know them, to share stories and to fight for them. It’s been tough to represent the hinterland as we don’t have the same infrastructure as the coastal areas, but I believe we have been able to achieve many successes for our local community through great

networking and by having good relationships with my fellow councillors,” Cr McKay said. She has a few tips for her replacement and suggests that having general respect for everyone goes a long way, as well as understanding that local council is a very political arena. Cr McKay says that while the new councillor can strongly advocate and fight for the electorate they should never promise anything as council process and decisions invariably involve a voting process,. “Early on in my role as a local councillor I was offered some excellent advice that has always stuck with me – in this job your skin will harden but you should always keep a soft heart. It takes a balance of listening to people, respecting that they have a right to an opinion and to not take differences to heart,” she said. Thankfully future plans, given the current situation with COVID-19, do not involve travel but do involve time for gardening and enjoying family and her grandchildren. Cr McKay is also looking forward to continuing with her charity work and continuing to be involved with her local community. “It’s lovely to be hanging up my hat and it has been an immense privilege and pleasure to represent the community. For my replacement, I’d like to say that I’m here if you need me. Otherwise, I’m really just looking forward to enjoying being part of my local community as a local resident.”

Former Maleny Show president honoured

By Sonia Clark Although the Maleny Show Society has understandably cancelled this year’s show, which had been scheduled for May 29-30, the society’s committee members came together last Thursday to honour former president Ivan (Hank) Hankinson, who was recently awarded a plaque of appreciation by the Showmen’s Guild of Australasia. Long-standing executive member of the Showmen’s Guild, Terry Nilon, said the Current Show Society president Winston Johnson, decision to recognise Ivan Hankinson, Monica Skerman and Kaye Ivan’s outstanding Hankinson service to the guild over the decades was unanimously supported by the committee. “As a group we wanted to acknowledge the incredible commitment and service that Ivan has contributed to both the Maleny Show and the guild,” Terry said. “He has been a great asset to the Showmen’s Guild of Australasia and a wonderful ambassador for both the Maleny Show Society and the Sunshine Coast region. When attending any show Ivan never missed the opportunity to visit representatives of the Showmen’s Guild and he was on personal speaking terms with everyone connected to the shows,” he said. Last year guild members representing regional agricultural and entertainment shows from NSW, Queensland, the ACT and the NT voted to award Ivan the plaque as a mark of respect for his tireless commitment to presiding over and promoting Sunshine Coast regional show societies – a responsibility that has spanned well over 30 years. In January this year, the guild hosted its annual agricultural show conference, attended by more than 200 members, where the award was formally dedicated to Ivan, who unfortunately was unable to receive it in person. Wanting to acknowledge the significance of this award, members of the Maleny Show Society organised the special morning tea for Ivan. Terry said Ivan was a more than worthy recipient of the award and that the plaque was a small but important gesture on behalf of the guild that had a very big sentiment behind it. “Ivan has always been a great hands-on worker and absolutely passionate about promoting regional show societies,” he said. “Even as president, Ivan would just get in and do whatever needed doing – even if that meant cleaning out the toilets at the Maleny Show at 7am. “He is an all-round great bloke and all of us who have dealt with him over the years couldn’t speak more highly of him and his commitment to promoting regional agricultural shows,” Terry said.

If we consider the word ‘best’, there is direct relevance to what is best for our division, council and region and whether, as your councillor, I can achieve this. I believe I can, and will. Throughout this campaign, it has become clear that people are concerned about protecting the remaining habitat of the hinterland from inappropriate development. I strongly agree with this position and will work tirelessly to ensure more sustainable practices are implemented because this is best practice. As a high school teacher I have followed a strict code of conduct for 20 years and have reflected a high level of integrity and responsibility in my professional life. Community collaboration connections I am mindful that this election coincides with a very uncertain time locally, nationally and globally. When I began this campaign, I outlined my intention to advocate for changes that build stronger, safer communities, support our volunteers, support small business and to fight for improvements where they are needed. Greg Cutlack It is with a mixture of trepidation coupled with a feeling of optimism and excitement that we should look towards the next ten years of local community government here on the Sunshine Coast. We are beginning a period, in our region, where we have the opportunity to create and plan the way we would like to see the Sunshine Coast evolve. Together as a community we will retain, protect and conserve those things that we hold dear, the things that will help keep our region healthy and happy. Namely the biodiversity and ecosystems that make the Sunshine Coast unique. The air, soil, water, the remnant vegetation all have an integral part in our wellbeing. We can no longer continue with the current business as usual approach. We are witnessing valuable remnant vegetation gradually diminish before our very eyes. We are seeing the infestation of exotic weeds decimate our waterways and forests. Not to mention the cost to agriculture from the influx of grassland weeds. We can take advantage of the financial and environmental benefits from undertaking energy, water and waste management audits. However, profit and savings alone are not the yard stick to a prosperous community. Division 5 Charles Hodgson The Sunshine Coast faces many challenges, like our need to deal with the consequences of faster than expected population growth while maintaining the character of our towns, our treasured lifestyle and precious environment. For the past few weeks, the Beerwah Sportsground Management Committee (BSMC) has faced some disturbing and, in most people’s perception, unfair interference by council. It seems complaints with regards to the campground facilities were lodged stating unfair advantage to commercially run caravan park operators. Council is obliged to investigate any complaint and decided to look into their many and sometimes conflicting rules and regulations. However, it now seems that council has decided that events are a permitted use of the camping facility but rallies are not an event by council’s definition. Also, our Christmas carols are on the chopping block as they are not classed as an event and therefore will not be approved. The Beerwah Sportsground’s main source of income is currently from caravan/motorhome clubs who use the facility during their rallies. All revenue from the campground goes directly back into the facility for maintenance, improvements, etc and the management committee are all volunteers who provide their time and expertise for free. Council’s yearly contribution for maintenance of the sporting fields, toilets and other infrastructure is minimal.

So, if the Beerwah campground is prohibited to accept caravan/motorhome clubs - their main source of income - they will go broke within a few months as a consequence and council, or rather ratepayers, will have to foot the bill for the upkeep of the grounds. Furthermore, rally participants are spending their money in our town during their visit, which supports our local businesses. The Beerwah Sportsground is a member of the Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce and as such we were approached to participate in a meeting held a couple weeks ago. Also invited were councillor candidates including Cr Rick Baberowski, as well as a representation from Celebrate Glasshouse Country. I think it is fair to say most participants at that meeting agreed that the way council is going about this issue is beyond comprehension and defies logic. If the campground is closed due to financial reasons, the community faces much higher fees for sports clubs and our schools. This is totally unacceptable, particularly in a time when access to sporting facilities in particular for our young people should be encouraged and is essential for their future health.

Casey-Lee Blake from the Landsborough Seventh-day Adventist Church recently returned from India after volunteering with International Volunteer HQ for three weeks teaching children in a slum area of Delhi. She used a combination of English and Hindi to communicate with the students. Casey-Lee said it was an extraordinary lifechanging experience. “It’s gut-wrenching seeing the conditions and circumstances men, women and especially children are exposed to in slum areas,” she said. “However, their eagerness to learn and their kind hearts never ceased to amaze me despite their background circumstances.”

Member for Glass House Andrew Powell was excited to meet the new YMCA Queensland Youth Parliament Member for Glass House, Ariana Doolan. “Ariana has recently graduated from Glasshouse Christian College and is studying a dual degree in law and environmental science at Griffith University this year,” Mr Powell said. Queensland Youth Parliament selects more than 90 young people aged 15-25 to discuss the issues facing youth and develop legislation that will be debated later in the year. “Just like the previous Youth Members for Glass House, Holly Baxter and Jack McSweeny, Ariana is intelligent, driven and articulate,” Mr Powell said. Ariana’s inspiration for applying to Youth Parliament was to gain experience to maybe one day be a politician. Environmental issues are a particular area of interest. “I think we need more representation for the environment, and the way to do that is through politics and legislation” Ariana said. “I also thought that it would be a great way to meet new people and potentially help me in the future if I choose to really get into politics,” she said. Mr Powell said these types of opportunities were important for young people “so that we can encourage them to get involved and learn more about how they can initiate change in the real world”. “There’s every chance that some Youth Members will go on to be future Members of Parliament one day. “Throughout the year, Ariana and I will likely have several meetings to discuss how we can best serve the communities of Glass House and, in particular, how we can assist young people. “Over the past few years of having Youth Members, I’ve really appreciated being able to get a young person’s insight on issues that matter to them and look forward to continuing to have similar conversations with Ariana,” Mr Powell said.

POLICE BEAT Myth busting There has been quite a lot of misinformation lately about all sorts of virus-related things, which just goes to show the importance of getting your information from reliable sources and not buying in to the general panic and hysteria. One thing I would like to clear up is the information about breath and saliva tests for drink and drug driving. Police will DEFINITELY be conducting random breath tests and drug testing on drivers. For the time being we will not be conducting what we refer to as ‘static sites’, where we set up in one place and test multiple people one after the other. This is to minimise the risk of exposure for both police officers and members of the public. So remember - it’s anywhere, anytime. Neighbourhood Watch Many groups will be in the same position as our local NHW group and have to cancel various meetings and events. Our next Coffee with a Cop event, due to be held in April, has been cancelled. We will have to wait to see how the situation develops for our June catch up. NHW, like many groups, has a number of members who are in high risk groups. While it is important that these people are not exposed, it’s also important that they do not lose their connection to the wider community. It may not be safe or practical to visit but a phone call, text message or email can go a long way to help them feel less isolated. Community Groups Disaster Management Community Sub-Group

The Mooloolah/Eudlo Disaster Management Community Sub-Group had the pleasure of attending the Lion’s awareness day at the Mooloolah Hall on Sunday, March 13. There were games, prizes, presentations and plenty of information. The group will be attending events throughout the year to spread the word, not only about what they do and what their role is in the community but also how you can get ready for the many disasters we face living in such an amazing part of the world. They are looking forward to their main event for the year – Emergency Services Day, which is planned to for July 25. Maleny Visitor Information Centre volunteers spent the morning on Thursday, March 12 enjoying a famil at the Glass House Mountains Information Centre. Maleny centre secretary Alison Sleath said the volunteers enjoyed a lovely morning tea and had time to chat with volunteers from Glass House, Montville and ambassadors from Sunshine Coast centres. Informative talks were given by the Glass House Mountains vollies and locals about tourist attractions and points of interest in their area. The Maleny Visitors Information Centre volunteers spoke on local points of interest. Margaret Ginns spoke of Maleny heritage, Ann Graham, Dulcie, Judith and Judy Robinson talked about new attractions in Maleny, Judy Holden’s information was regarding hinterland walks and the Maleny Botanic Garden, and Graham Gardner concluded with how the visitors centre functions.

Lifeline will continue answering calls Lifeline Australia chairman John Brogden last week announced that Lifeline will continue to answer calls throughout the COVID-19 crisis. “Today we want to reassure Australians that no matter what happens with COVID-19, if the government calls for a lock down in any or all of Australia, Lifeline is prepared and we are committed to being available to any person who needs us through the 13 11 14 phone line, text and online services,” Mr Brogden said. The service is expecting calls to continue to increase. In one week earlier this month, 23% of the callers to Lifeline discussed novel coronavirus. Lifeline is putting new measures in place to ensure the 13 11 14 phone line and text service will remain open if Australia is forced into lock down. Mr Brogden also called on Australians to look out for each other. “The current social isolation policy means many of the important opportunities for people to connect with each other and do things they enjoy are being stopped. For someone who is already struggling, this can be a huge blow,” he said. “We are asking people to look out for those who may struggle through isolation, especially if they live on their own. If you can’t knock on their door, be imaginative in how you can connect - give someone a call, write them an email, put a note under their door, sing under their window. By reaching out to someone who may be struggling and letting them know you care, you can send a really powerful message of hope. “If mandatory isolation is imposed, we know there will be many Australians who will struggle with heightened anxiety. Queensland is taking the next step in removing single-use plastics from the environment with consultation now open on a state-wide ban that will initially focus on straws, drink stirrers, cutlery and plates. Minister for the Environment and the Great Barrier Reef Leeanne Enoch said it’s time to decide the future of single-use plastics in Queensland. Plastic pollution in our environment affects every aspect of our lives – from the water we drink and the food we consume, to the plants, animals and outdoor places we all love and enjoy,” Ms Enoch said. “In the future we’ll also consider other forms of single-use items such as coffee cups, heavyweight plastic shopping bags and polystyrene containers, but right now we’re focused on straws, stirrers, plates and cutlery,” Ms Enoch said. “Items such as plastic bags, plastic utensils, straws and coffee cups are convenient for a few minutes but are often discarded after a single use, ending up in landfill or as litter in our beautiful oceans and beaches,” Ms Day said. More than 7,300 plastic straws were collected at the last Clean Up Australia Day, which is double the number of straws collected two years ago. Queenslanders, stakeholders and the community are encouraged to provide feedback by visiting www.qld.gov.au/reducingplastic. Submissions close on April 15. All submissions will be considered as part of the government’s plan to develop new legislation aimed at moving the state towards a zero-waste economy by 2050.

event. We’d hoped the show would have been a special occasion for our farmers and locals to celebrate the recent good rain, so this cancellation is particularly disappointing in that regard. We wish to deal with the emotional toll this will take on our members and patrons, and work hard to ensure this has a limited financial impact on the Show Society for the future. We certainly intend to hold a show in 2021. We are collating information on entries, trade, sponsorship and membership that have already come in, and will be working with these individually in the coming days. A timetable will be in place by the end of the week to deal with 2020 contractual matters, sponsorship, trade and refunds. Halting the spread of COVID-19 is everyone’s responsibility. We understand the frustration felt by the community but we are all in this together as everyone is being affected. The show won’t be on

On behalf of the Maleny Agricultural Show Society committee, we regret to advise our volunteers, patrons, officials, competitors, ambassadors, supporters, sponsors and members that the 2020 Maleny Show has been cancelled. With the current environment we feel it’s the right and only decision to make. The health and safety of our patrons, exhibitors and volunteers was paramount to our final decision. This is the first time since 1965 that the show cannot go on. Drought was the cause of that cancellation but this time it’s a different story for us all. We would like to thank the general public for their understanding and support of our show, and all Queensland shows, as we make this very difficult decision. The health and safety of our entire community is foremost in our minds at this time. We would like to pay tribute to our hard working show volunteers, who are disappointed that all their hard work to prepare for the show has come to this point. If it had been a normal year and we had gone ahead, we know we would have had a fantastic

Strange way to respond

Heads up to the GC&M News for their excellent twopage spread of 20 questions to the candidates. It was particularly useful for people who were unable to attend the many meet-the-candidates nights that were convened around the electorate over the past few weeks. We found the response to question four particularly enlightening with respect to the beliefs expressed by the candidates. The question was: “Do you agree that the global

climate is significantly changing due mainly to human-induced factors?” Of the ten candidates in Division 5 only three answered no to this question. These candidates were Winston Johnston, Greg Williams and Kiti Bruinsma. Why is advice on climate science for elected representatives and these potential representatives with no climate science expertise so difficult to accept? And yet the acceptance of advice … albeit a little slow … on the means of tackling the coronavirus has been near universal by most politicians despite the fact most are not medically trained. Making life easier

As someone who frequently drives through the intersection of Peachester Road and Old Gympie Road, I was pleased to read that the Palaszczuk government will soon begin work on the crossroads (GC&M News, March 11). Peachester Road is a major arterial road. Traffic lights with signalling for pedestrians will make access easier for parents with children at Beerwah State School. Road widening and additional turning lanes will help truck drivers. And cyclists will appreciate dedicated cycling lanes. Digging is due to start in mid-May. The project will cost $5.5 million and create 13 jobs. Although the LNP Newman government talked about improving the intersection, in its three-year reign it did nothing. I am writing this letter to express my continuing dismay with council and councillor inaction. The Beerwah Sportsground Management Committee (BSMC) cannot not agree with Cr Baberowski’s comments in GC&M News (March 18). It is stated that there is a new formal complaint – perhaps we are not aware of this yet. There was a formal complaint early in February, which resulted in compliance officers visiting the grounds and the immediate non-compliance issues have been addressed by the BSMC. It also says that this follows a history of several complaints from multiple sources. The BSMC is aware of one previous complaint with a compliance inspection but have not been advised of several complaints from multiple sources. We feel these statements paint a very poor picture of what has actually occurred. Was there really an emergency meeting called with the CEO? Cr Baberowski has only indicated that he has sent an email or two to make council aware without advising us of any commitment that anything will eventuate, let alone an emergency meeting. To say council officers have been sympathetic is really stretching the truth and the ‘old hat’ statement that we have heard a thousand times now is insulting. To suggest that we need council to help the current management committee “better understand the licence and to talk through event applications before we make them” is condescending and belittling. We can clearly understand the conditions of the licence, we know how these conditions were previously applied and interpreted but we don’t understand how council can just change interpretation as it suits them. As for event permits, we have been doing them successfully for events on the grounds for years but council has suddenly decided to interpret an event completely differently. No matter how good the attempt to meet expectations community organisations will always fall short and without a strong councillor to give support the game is over. Communities in crisis

The very fabric of Australian society is based around communities that are built on an army of unpaid volunteers who willingly give up their time to help and support a range of community and recreation clubs. They also provide neighbourhood centres with donations and food to stop the slide into miserable poverty that many Australians are currently facing. The valuable efforts of volunteers are slowly being eroded through red tape, policy and procedure systems, compliance rules and the obligation of taking out expensive insurance policies. It gets worse with many applications for permits for events being rejected as they are non-compliant with the current rules being enforced. To add insult to injury, the application fees of $250 are too expensive for unpaid volunteers and non-refundable if the event is rejected. Is this the sort of society we want to live in? If the current trend continues we are in danger in a few short years of volunteers fading away due to time consuming

paperwork and costs often based around OHS. It is time to stop and rethink. Reducing red tape is vital so volunteers, community and sports groups function without impossible council compliances. Clive Waring Candidate for Division

Boundary setbacks questioned

The Sunshine Coast Council dwelling code objectives state: 1. The purpose of the Dwelling house code is to ensure dwelling houses achieve a high level of comfort and amenity for the occupants, maintain the amenity and privacy of neighbouring residential premises; 2. The purpose of the Dwelling house code will be achieved by the following overall outcomes: b. a dwelling house is sited and designed to protect the amenity and privacy of neighbouring residential premises How can the above objectives be achieved, for example in a rural residential area, when the code allows a neighbour to build a structure 3m from the boundary and 8.5m high? The dwelling house code is self-assessable by the developing neighbour and currently the existing resident is totally excluded from the process. The effect on the resident is magnified because the Sunshine Coast Council has the smallest building to boundary setbacks of any of the surrounding councils, eg, Somerset Council is 10m; Noosa Shire is 6m. I contacted all ten of the Division 5 candidates to ask them if they support and agree with the current council’s rural residential setback of only 3m. I received two responses – from Winston Johnston and Clive Waring – and I appreciate both of them for taking the time to answer. “I was not aware of the three metre setback. I agree it does not fit with the amenity of a rural residential setting. So, no I do not think it is acceptable and I will try to have this changed if I am elected. This code was designed for the mass urban developments on the coast - profit driven, anti-social and environmentally irresponsible. Council codes need consistency yet flexibility depending on the location/geography. Health &Wellbeing Exercise research wins award

A University of the Sunshine Coast researcher has won a national industry medal for her PhD thesis that examined why blood vessels function poorly as people age and how beetroot juice could boost blood flow and reduce arterial stiffness. Lecturer in clinical exercise physiology Dr Meegan Walker was awarded the 2019 Exercise & Sports Science Australia (ESSA) Medal. Dr Walker’s thesis was titled ‘Blood flow during passive leg movement: impact of vascular disease and nitrate supplements’. It identified interventions such as beetroot supplements that could enhance the function of blood vessels in older adults. “My early studies demonstrated how oxidative stress reduced nitric oxide, impairing blood flow in older adults and leading to conditions like peripheral arterial disease,” Dr Walker said. “My recent studies showed how healthy sources of nitrate such as beetroot juice or a big green leafy salad increased nitric oxide, improving blood flow and vascular function in older adults.” The accredited exercise physiologist said the award was very motivating. “I feel encouraged to continue to do research that informs our clinical practice,” she said. The ESSA judges said: “This is a very comprehensive thesis, incorporating a series of studies ranging from exploration of mechanisms which provide noteworthy and novel insights into the pathophysiology of peripheral artery disease. “The candidate has a clear grasp of the weight of her findings and provides real-world value by translating these into meaningful recommendations.”

Hair today, gone tomorrow Member for Glass House Andrew Powell joined forces with the Leukaemia Foundation and shaved his beard off to help “shave the world” from blood cancer. Andrew was apparently a little nervous when he visited the talented Barbers of Maleny to have his beard shaved off. “I’ve had the beard for five years now, having only shaved it once during a family holiday and was grateful then it grew back pretty quickly,” he said. The Glass House community raised $544.63 to support Andrew’s beard shaving expedition and more than 100,000 Australians currently living with blood cancers like leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma. “While I am a bit sceptical about my new look, I’m thrilled to have been able to raise this money for the Leukaemia Foundation in such a fun way that engages the broader community,” Mr Powell said. This was the third year Mr Powell had participated in the World’s Greatest Shave but his first year shaving his beard. In previous years he has dyed the beard. “I know there are people who were pretty upset that more donations went towards colouring my beard last year. Obviously, they were eager to see it go since I quickly went above and beyond my $500 fundraising goal,” he said.

Queensland Health Minister Steven Miles last week told Parliament the state government had bought three new testing machines known as Panthers to bolster the state’s capability for a range of important health tests. In the Garden Jobs for the yard in April

With current events, some people are going to spend lots of time at home. To help pass the time, I’ve created an expanded ‘things to do’ list for April. If you are self-isolating at home, use the time to do some of those yard jobs you’ve been putting off. It might be re-bedding pavers, sanding and staining outdoor furniture, restraining the fence wire, mix up garden edging, re-mulch neglected gardens, build a few native bee hotels, or paint the fence. Whatever you do next month, stay safe and well. • Plant sweet peas, snow peas, sugar snap peas, climbing peas and bush peas. Plant as either seed or seedlings into soil that has had some dolomite added. Maybe try asparagus peas. • Start to reduce the frequency you mow the lawn and start raising the blade height to allow the grass to keep a reasonable amount of leaf during the cooler months. • Fertilise your roses, especially if you haven’t done it for a few years. • It’s time to dig up, divide and replant your Hippeastrum and Lilium bulbs. • Bougainvillea cuttings can be taken now and struck in a good propagation mix. • Clean up the last of the summer vegetable crops. Use all the prunings, weeds and remains of summer vegetables to start a compost heap. • Plant new pawpaw trees. Apply some boron to existing plants at a rate of 20g per tree and spray them with a copper spray if black spot is seen. • Carefully cut off side shoots of bromeliads to create new plants. Plant these in the garden or in pots using a well-drained potting mix.

• Go around the garden and take a critical look, removing plants that don’t inspire you anymore. Now is a good time to replace them. • Keep gardens weeded, particularly areas around fence lines and buildings as these can harbour pests and diseases through the winter months. • Most vegetables can go in now, especially the Brassica family (Asian greens, broccoli, kale and collards, mustard, cabbage). • Lightly trim back lavender and rosemary. • Spray citrus fruit with sulphur spray to control the citrus russet mite. • Mound soil around bean stems to stop them falling over if the bean fly have been active.

• Plant evergreen fruit trees. Defer planting deciduous fruit trees until July August. • It’s a good time to re-pot potted plants and hanging baskets. Landsborough SDA Church Following directions from the Australian Government and its health experts, and Adventist health professionals and church leaders, the Australian Union Conference of the Seventh-day Adventist Church has directed that Adventist churches across Australia close their doors until April 30. This is seen as a timely response to protect church members, particularly those who are more vulnerable as well as the wider community. Range Croquet Club Contributed by Ken Barker Bev Sockhill and Donna Manning played a friendly game of golf croquet on Thursday, March 12 while avoiding the occasional shower of rain. Donna spent the weekend competing in the Australian Croquet Association women’s championship at Graceville and Toombul clubs in Brisbane. She reported that the hospitality and conditions were good, that she played well and enjoyed her games. On Sunday, March 15 Helen Andrews and Janelle Wilson played a very instructive and surprisingly productive game to score about six hoops apiece. Well done both players. Meanwhile, Ken Barker and Nick Cram played another enjoyable game that could have gone either way at any time but Ken crept ahead with a nice break at the death to win 18–10. Coaching for beginners and others is available from 8-10am on Saturdays. These are popular sessions with accredited coaches in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. Play days are Thursdays and Sundays at 2pm for 2.30pm.
