ell it is official – 2017 is now fully underway. The kids have headed back to school a little earlier than usual, then three days back into the school year they get Thursday off for Australia Day. So have you worked out what your family will be doing on Australia Day yet? There are plenty of organised events going on locally as well on the Coast. On our Things 2 Do page we have a pretty good write up of what is going on in our neck of the woods, which includes everything from a Flag Raising Ceremony, to a massive Sports and Recreation Expo at Maleny, along with a Remembrance Ceremony, and some Pineapple Iron Men and Women – not to forget Dunny Racing. If it is all too much choice, it might just be a great opportunity to invite some friends over, crank up the barbecue and have some fun outdoors while trying not to get sunburnt! Whilst Brownie and I will be checking out most of the activities – and hopefully getting some great photos together for next week’s edition – I hope whatever you decide to do you enjoy the day, because we don’t have another public holiday until Easter. Local News Car and train crash at Landsborough Police have charged a man following an investigation into a crash involving a car and a train at Landsborough on November 29. It will be alleged that around 5.00am that morning, a northbound goods train struck a car at that had been left on the railway crossing on Caloundra Street. The car was unoccupied, but it is alleged that it had been stolen from a business on Gantry Road at Landsborough. While no one was injured, the train pushed the car approximately 100 metres north before stopping with debris spread across both railway lines. In a separate incident, a car was allegedly stolen from outside the Caloundra Library on January 12. This vehicle was located on January 17 at Dakabin and a 29-year-old man was subsequently arrested. The Lutwyche man has been charged in relation to both offences. He appeared in the Pine Rivers Magistrates Court last week charged with unlawful use of a motor vehicle and obstruct police. After his court appearance yesterday, he was additionally charged with two counts of wilful damage and trespass, and one count each of

As he launches his first ‘Listening Post Blitz’ for 2017, Mr Wallace is calling all Fisher residents who have yet to meet the him or want to raise a particular issue, to pop down to one of the many locations he will be stationed at next week. “I made it very clear when I launched my campaign for Fisher earlier last year that I would always be available to the electorate and my ‘Listening Post Blitz’ is just another way I am delivering on that promise,” he said. “I know the people of Fisher have concerns and the only way I can ensure I am fully across what I need to be working on is to hear it straight from our community members.” Mr Wallace has announced his Listening Post Blitz which will commence on Monday January 30. He will be available at the dates, times and locations listed below. On Monday, January 30 he will be at Glass House Information Centre where he will be serving a barbeque with Andrew Powell between 3.30pm and 5.30pm. On Tuesday, January 31 he will be at Beerburrum, ‘Parrot Park’ from 3.30pm til 5.30pm. On Wednesday, February 1 he will be
at the Maleny Kiosk on Maple Street from 1.00pm to 2.30pm and then at Montville, corner of Main Street and Memorial Close from 3.30pm til 5.30pm. He will have an early start on Thursday morning, February 2 where you will be able to catch up with him at Landsborough Railway Station between 6.00am and 8.00am then on Friday, February 3, he and Andrew Powell will be doing a barbeque from 3.00pm to 5.00pm at the Conondale Swimming Pool. “I am passionate about making sure the Fisher electorate is the place of choice for families and businesses to achieve their maximum potential in education, employment and retirement,” said Mr Wallace. “It is only through listening to our community that can I take action and advocate for change in Government policy and make Fisher the best it can be. “By making myself available regularly at locations in and around our local community I am reinforcing my grassroots dedication and my commitment to serving the great people of Fisher,” he said.

Glass House Mountains local celebrates 100 years young By Sonia Clark
On Christmas Eve, Glass House Mountains local Ray Burnett celebrated his 100th birthday with a party at his son’s property surrounded by over 80 family members and friends. The sprightly gentleman, who stills lives independently, enjoyed the celebratory afternoon gathering that included a specially made ‘horseman’ inspired cake and songs and performances by family and friends. Given the occasion, Ray also sang a song that he had composed himself about his life as a ‘packhorse man’ to a rapturous response. Ray was born in 1916 at Charters Towers and grew up in a family with six siblings. His dad was a railway man, and so the family travelled from town to town during Ray’s childhood. At 14 he decided to leave school which was quite common in those days. His teacher at the time tried to talk him out of becoming a drover but, as Ray recalls, “The worse he made it sound, the more I wanted to do it!”
When asked about the secret to having a long life, Ray said he believes that some of his longevity can be attributed to having spent so many years as a horseman and enjoying a healthy outdoor country lifestyle – the first time he ever visited the city was at the end of the war! “There is no secret to reaching 100, though I don’t drink or swear or go out with good women!” Ray chuckled. “I’ve had a tremendous life and I was very lucky to have met the girl I married – we had a very good life together,” he added.
He went on to spend many years in the saddle until the start of the Pacific war in 1942 enticed Ray to enlist in the Australian Air Force. A couple of years earlier, while working on a sheep station in Hughenden, a young lass named Gladys caught his eye and the two went on to marry at the end of 1942. The couple went on to have three sons, Raymond, William and Stephen, and the couple were together for 69 years until Gladys’ passing at the age of 88. Following the war and long periods away from home, Ray was eventually discharged from the airforce in 1945. He went straight into work as a ‘lineman’ at what was then known as P.M.G - the Australian Government Post Master General department – until he was “discharged into retirement” at 60. In 1991, he and Gladys moved down to Glass House Mountains.

Supermarket with a difference Locally owned and operated, Maleny IGA is changing the way we do shopping. It’s been a year since this pioneering supermarket teamed up with local dietitian, Kali Gray, to deliver community cooking and nutritional services. Since then, it’s grown into something bigger than they ever imagined. “We started with simple walking tours to help with health conditions,” Kali explains. “Now we run off-site, booked-out food events, ranging from cheese-making and wine tasting to fermentation. It goes to show how many people are interested in health and food.” Approximately 15% of Maleny IGA’s current product range is local. The food events at Maleny IGA are a fusion of nutritional and culinary expertise. While Kali still conducts health-oriented walking tours, the cooking classes are growing exponentially. “It’s all about showing people what they can eat and how to make it delicious,” Kali reports. “The classes are typically run by me and Chef Amanda Kennedy, who has worked with prestigious chefs such as Martin Boetz and David Thompson. “It’s not about restriction,” Amanda adds. “It’s about understanding how easy it is to turn basic, healthy ingredients into a beautiful dish.” Kali and Amanda create these food events with three main objectives: firstly, to showcase and celebrate the abundance of local quality ingredients; secondly, to foster a food hub and community where people of all walks of life can learn about food and enjoy cooking; and lastly, to help people understand nutrition in a way that is fun and relatable.
Upcoming courses which still have vacancies include Thai Cooking (with complementary alcohol tastings) on Thursday, February 2. Then on Thursday, February 9, there are two sessions running on Cheese Making and Wine Tasting. Sadly for a number of local families this holiday period has been a time when loved ones have been injured or killed in traffic incidents. On the Sunshine Coast alone around thirty injury traffic crashes have been reported in the three weeks since Christmas, including two fatalities, one of them in Beerwah Division. In the first week of the New Year six people died on Queensland roads, five more than the same period last year. It seems that there are people who are still not hearing the message about the ‘fatal five’; speed, alcohol and drugs, fatigue, seatbelts and driver inattention.
Number plate theft
The theft of car registration plates continues to be an issue for local police. Thieves often target vehicles which are similar to the vehicle they are driving, so more common types of cars are potentially more of a target. Beerwah Police and the local Neighbourhood Watch want to help you secure your number plates against theft. You can attend the Beerwah Police Station on Tuesday mornings from 8.00am to 11.00am and pick up your free non-reversible screws. The screws are easy to put on with a normal flat head screwdriver but cannot be removed without a special tool.

A Buderim mum visiting the popular Gardner’s Falls swimming hole on Obi Lane at Maleny last week witnessed some distressing events leading to the death of a platypus. Commenting on the Sunny Coast Community Board Facebook page, Nadine Whittome explained that she watched in horror as people handled, chased, harassed and even poked the platypus with sticks. “We saw the worst and best of humanity today,” she wrote. “An adult preventing a young platypus from getting back into its burrow, chasing it over a waterfall into a large pool below where scores of people were. You can imagine what happened next ... everyone looking, chasing etc, mostly from natural curiosity. “Then some boys chase it, poking it and flipping it over with a stick. “Panicked, the platypus ends up going over the big waterfall down into the large pool where loads of people are bombing/somersaulting, etc.” The platypus was eventually rescued and taken to the Australian Zoo Wildlife Hospital at Beerwah. However, Nadine reported in a Facebook update that the platypus, named Polly at the hospital, had subsequently died. “Apparently the bill of a platypus is extremely sensitive to movement due to 'electroreception' and is stressed easily. It seems at this stage that too
many people, too much going on and deadly trips down waterfalls were all too much,” Nadine wrote. A saddened Nadine wants people to learn from the tragedy, writing that wildlife needs to be respected. “Please people, spread the word that wildlife is just that – wild. Let's admire it from afar and not touch it/interfere with its life in anyway if we can.” The story gathered many comments from outraged locals on multiple Facebook pages, including ‘Maleny and surround Chit-Chat’. In Queensland, it is an offence under the Nature Conservation Act to interfere with wildlife. The Department of Environment and Heritage Protection recommend injured or sick wildlife may require special treatment and rehabilitation from a trained wildlife carer or a vet. They suggest that, if possible, remove the animal from the source of the threat, and then if the animal can be handled, safely confine it (e.g. wrap it in a towel and place in a closed cardboard box) so that it's warm and quiet. It may then need to be taken to a licensed wildlife carer for treatment and rehabilitation. You can also contact your local vet for help. If you are unsure about handling an animal, just keep it safe until skilled help arrives. The Australian Zoo Wildlife Hospital suggests that if you find sick or injured wildlife, call the 24 Hour Australian Wildlife Emergency Hotline – 1300 369 652.

Adult literacy classes make a difference Many of us take for granted the fact that we can read a book or the back of a medicine bottle. But if we couldn’t, it is great to know that our local library can help – and it’s free. For the last 27 years, Sunshine Coast Council’s Libraries have provided free literacy training to adults between 15 and 76 years of age, with the dedicated support of trained volunteers. Adult literacy students include school leavers, parents, grandparents, workers, unemployed, people with physical/intellectual disabilities, migrants and many others. These people, for a variety of reasons, may be prohibited from participating in activities that involve reading, writing, speaking, numeracy and basic digital literacy. During 2016 Sunshine Coast Libraries helped 120 students to improve their reading and writing skills with the support of 102 dedicated volunteer tutors. Adult Literacy classes commence at Maleny Library on January 25 offering one-on-one tutoring with general literacy including reading, writing, maths and basic computer skills. Adult Literacy training is closely related to the students' needs and sessions may be in small groups at Maleny, Beerwah, Caloundra, Kawana or Maroochydore library branches, or individually at any library across the region. Making a difference in your community By Lea Parkes Recently I caught up with the Maleny SES Group Leader Pamyla O’Connor and member Jared Ashcroft and their enthusiasm for the roles they undertake in times of emergency shines through. Their desire to give back to the community, their motivation to continue being on hand to help others when they are in need, and the satisfaction they feel once the job is completed, keeps them motivated to stay involved. Pamyla is keen to encourage locals to take up the opportunity and become a volunteer for the SES, in particular anyone who has been involved in SES (in Maleny or other areas) in the past is encouraged to consider giving it another go. They need volunteers for all sorts of tasks, and while there are plenty of physical challenges required, there are also plenty of jobs for support
services for the group, admin tasks, support with catering, etc (roles where you don’t have to have a head for heights or good physical strength). Pamyla has only recently returned to the role of Group Leader, but with more than 34 years of service to SES she has extensive experience behind her and she would love to increase the number of women getting involved The Maleny Group also have a boat that can be required during floods and they would love to get a new volunteer with good boating skills. Most importantly, the group needs members of all ages, as people skills and capacity are matched with the jobs required. Pamyla said they currently have a couple of members who have come through Maleny High. "It is a great opportunity for high school students, for personal development," she said. "Being involved in the group activities and training gives them a real sense of achievement which, in turn, can have a positive effect on their day to day lives." They can also earn themselves a Certificate II in Public Safety. Students need to be 16 years of age and need parental consent if they are under 18. Jared has been involved with the SES for the past 13 years and he loves being able to help
others as well as have the opportunity to learn new skills, including 4WD recovery, chainsaw use, traffic management and height safety. There is no cost for joining or on-going participation and the uniform and equipment you need to do the jobs required are all supplied. Volunteers must provide their time to attend Monday night training and be available during emergencies. Ensure the best vision for your child With the kids returning to school, parents will be turning their attention back to ensuring the best possible educational development outcomes for their child’s progress. A massive amount of classroom information is transferred visually and so if a child suffers vision problems it can rob them of their enthusiasm and potential to learn.
Associate Professor Leo Hartley from h2 Visions Centres has extensive post-graduate training in paediatric optometry and is also a behavioural optometrist with decades of specialist experience under his belt. In assessing children of all ages, A/ Professor Hartley uses state of the art technology to ensure a fully comprehensive paediatric optometry assessment that goes beyond the standard eye checks for children. “Young children with vision problems often don’t realise that they even have a problem, thinking that everyone sees the way that they do. Often children can have their confidence literally ‘knocked out of them’ by a subtle vision problem that makes their reading halting or slow,” explains A/Professor Hartley. Signs that may indicate a vision problem include unexplained headaches after close work or on school days, holding reading material or electronic devices very close, squinting or closing one eye, blinking excessively, avoiding reading, skipping, confusing small words (like ‘then’ for ‘they’;
‘was’ for ‘saw’ or ‘no’ for ‘on’), frequently losing the place or the line, or having to ‘refocus’ after reading. They may complain of the print ‘running together’ or jumping. Often they avoid reading or say “it’s boring” because they can’t recall what they’re reading. Vision problems can put children off learning – focusing and eye coordination issues if undiagnosed can have significant impact on the ability of the child to comprehend as they ‘read to learn’. Their confidence can be affected when they may find they cannot recall what they’ve just read or too easily lose concentration when reading. Children with vision problems may make careless errors when performing maths. Often correcting a child’s vision problem can let parents and teachers see just how smart a child is as their reading fluency improves and their maths becomes more accurate.
Associate Professor Hartley completed his Fellowship in Behavioural Optometry in 1995. He practised as a paediatric optometrist in far north Queensland for several years and has worked with Dr Lionel Kowal, one of Australia’s leading strabismologists (surgical management of turned eye) in Melbourne. He also has enormous experience in managing vision problems in multi-handicapped children and has been invited to lecture on paediatric optometry at state, national and international level. Apart from the usual short sightedness, long sightedness and astigmatism (distorted vision), eye coordination and focusing issues are often overlooked by non-paediatric trained eye professionals. Interestingly incidences of vision problems are increasing as children get older and research is
finding that the genetic disposition for myopia or short sightedness can be ‘switched on’ from doing close work, for example from using tablets and phones – an increasing occurrence in our technology savvy world. At h2 Vision Centres, a child’s eye examination contains the same elements of the adult examination – but with a far greater emphasis on extra tests of eye coordination and focusing abilities in children. Often children with focusing and eye coordination issues have perfect distance vision, so unless extra tests to probe these functions are performed, several problems may be missed. Medicare has recognised the necessity of these tests, adding a specific item number to allow extra time during a child’s eye examination to investigate these functions. Paediatric patients usually require longer consultation times to allow for a more careful history taking (involving developmental milestones, the child’s school performance, any other health professionals’ findings and management involved in the child’s care). Many children with developmental problems also have visual problems, so this history is very important. Then, as well as a careful eye health examination and checks for long sightedness, short sightedness or astigmatism, careful tests of eye coordination and focusing are assessed. Often the treatment for these problems can be as simple a pair of glasses for reading or simple vision training (orthoptic training) to correct the problems. Despite the simplicity of the treatment modality, the results are often remarkable, with the child now free to access their learning uninhibited by a visual problem. Open Studio Weekend with Co-ordinator Judi Parkinson
Libraries support our local art community We all know council’s Sunshine Coast Libraries are vibrant community hubs greeting people from all walks of life and now the community can also enjoy art exhibitions on display by local artists. Currently there are two separate exhibitions on at the Maleny Library through until January 31. Mieke Van Sambeek’s passion is to be creative and clay is her first choice to work with. She enjoys exploring possibilities with different techniques in ceramics, different firings and different kilns. Mieke feels that working in the arts gives her the opportunity to express her artistic flare whilst bringing joy and pleasure into other people’s lives. Pauline Amor also has a textile exhibition on display. Pauline is a textile artist who loves to work with brightly coloured silks and beads. This is a compilation of her latest work using sari silks, silk threads from Nepal and other textural yarns. Pauline has a wealth of knowledge which

she is happy to share. She also teaches textile basket making and beading at her home studio in Mooloolah. The good news is, all exhibitions are free and no bookings are required. Kim Hansen at Vianta This month Vianta Arts presents another of our wonderful local artists – Kim Hansen – who lives right here on the Sunshine Coast in Landsborough. Kim has enjoyed doing art, using many different media, for a very long time. In fact, she entered, and won, her first competition when she was only eight years old. She recollects that "I won first prize for my ‘farmer pig’" and laughs at the prize she received. "I won a book on wrestling – what eight-year old girl wants a book on wrestling? – however, it didn’t stop me from continuing with my passion for art." Many years since winning that first prize she says, "I am still very much enjoying it, all the time experimenting with different media, oils, acrylics water colours, spray cans and airbrushing."

She had always wanted to learn airbrushing but, due to work and family, never found the time. Now that her children all have families of their own, she has been able to study and learn airbrushing here on the Sunshine Coast. She has now completed a Certificate II in airbrushing photo realism, and she runs children’s art workshops from her home at Kim's Kreations Gallery. This exhibition 'Famous Faces' is a collection of portraits of people who are 'household names', that Kim has airbrushed on stretched canvas. Some of them are so realistic that you need to study them closely to satisfy yourself that they have been painted, and are not a photograph printed on canvas. Many local residents are familiar with Kim's work because she donates art to numerous fund raisers and charities as well as selling at local markets. 'Famous Faces' will hang at Vianta, 70 Simpson Street, Beerwah, from January 29 to February 26. The exhibition will open at 6.00pm on Friday, February 3. Please feel very welcome to attend and enjoy Kim’s portraits of the famous and glamorous. Both Chris and I are award winning, professional artists who work in a variety of media, including pastels, watercolours, acrylics, oils, and photography. As a multimedia artist whose art practice includes painting, drawing, photography, videography, mixed media and writing, my works of art are an eclectic collection of paintings, movies, photography and books. However, regardless of the medium, my collective art practice usually records a personal visual diary. Reminiscence and familiar experiences are key influences in my art practice and are incorporated in my non-verbal communication tools for people with mid-late Alzheimer's disease. You Said It Labelling laws
In recent weeks advertising to help us become aware of our new food labelling laws has come through both TV and the printed media. While the kangaroo symbol supposedly assures us it’s ‘Australian Made’ or ‘Produce of Australia’, the ‘60% imported product’ (or whatever percentage) doesn’t tell us country of origin and that’s what we need to know – percentages aren’t sufficient. WHERE the food item originated is what we the consumer needs to know, so we can make informed choices as to whether we’ll purchase it or not. Perhaps by advising us of the vital information, our decision ‘not to purchase’ could dramatically affect the Free Trade Agreement our government has adopted with overseas countries and that would throw a spanner in the works for them and the manufacturers. One would have expected the government to have made a greater effort in using this opportunity to get these important decisions correct and not treat the consumer as complete fools. Do other people, like me, feel the government has let us down and possibly been dictated to by manufacturers? I grew up in and still believe in a democratic society where free speech is the bedrock of our way of life. Whilst I do not agree with parts of the platform that First Nation runs on, the fact is people voted them in, and on that basis alone they have a right to be heard. The vast majority of us have the ability to sort the chaff from the wheat and vote for what we feel is right (no I didn’t). If it were not for freedom of speech and the right to put forward a point of view, a lot of the social changes we have seen today would not have occurred. You may not like what Ms Bell-Henselin has to say, but as long as she is not personally abusive, defamatory or inciting violence, then in a democratic society she has a right to say it and let the rest of us make up our minds. You also have the best right of reply to her and that is, in a democracy, you are free to run against her on your own platform and make a difference for your community. I will be moving
I just wanted to let the local Peachester community know that I will be moving away from the town, but will still be connected to my church family. Being visually impaired I've have had Glasshouse Country Care come and take me shopping, do my home maintenance and lawn mowing as well. I am going to miss Peachester as there are a lot of kind people and I would have stayed, however I have had to find a new rental property that will accept my two small dogs and my kelpie. I'm packing the house up on my own as I don’t have anyone to help with this – although my good friends, who are over sixty, help me when they can. My lawns need mowing, so I have Glasshouse Country Care doing a quote for that and coming soon and I have a few things for sale. I’m hoping I can find someone to assist me with moving my things when I find a new rental property. If you would like to make contact my

Sad loss
It is with a very sad heart that I also want to advise that a beautiful dog, Chevy, was killed on Fortune Avenue over the weekend. Four motor bike riders coming through a 60km/h zone accidently knocked him down and broke his back. As he had never escaped previously, I looked and found that the fence had been tampered with – the wire had been cut and pulled open, letting the dog out. I hope that the person responsible for this feels really guilty. My two small dogs are inside always and my foster dog, a pure red kelpie, was in her crate inside. Closing down
Beerwah Books and Bits has been operating in the oldest business building in Beerwah for the past six and a half years, but sadly Bernie and Linda have recently decided to close down. They are having a storewide $2.00 a book and half-price for records sale to clear the shelves. I have been working with them and it has been a great experience. It’s been the best job ever and with the best bosses in the world, and I enjoyed every day there. Linda and Bernie are wonderful people and I know that the many local customers will be sad to see them go. The Draft South East Queensland Plan released in late October is open for submission from the community, with the deadline being March 3, 2017. As a community we are being given the opportunity to have input into future planning for our region for the next twenty-five years and beyond. The Draft Plan strongly favours “infill growth” in the short term, as it makes sense to utilise the existing infrastructure. This concept has less impact on the environment and is more cost effective for council and other service providers into the future. Further down the track, Beerwah East is identified for future growth, with Beerwah being flagged as a “major regional service centre”. The potential benefits for Glasshouse Country region will be in the form of economic development for the townships and the future provision of government services such as Medicare and Queensland Transport in Beerwah. The flow-on effect will see an increase in job opportunities and better public transport, with the proposed rail link to the coast passing through Beerwah East becoming a reality. The Plan notes Halls Creek for Potential Future Growth, despite a strong public outcry against its inclusion when the former State Government sought public opinion in the matter of “Halls Creek versus Beerwah East” in 2014. Development of Halls Creek could have a negative economic impact on the hinterland townships. Our council would be forced to direct significant time and funding to further coastal development. Council has over many years consistently rejected development proposals for Halls Creek. There are well documented reasons for this rejection, including the shortening of the interurban green break between Moreton Shire and the Sunshine Coast. We are being given the opportunity to have our say now on issues that will affect future generations, so we should support our council in this matter and speak out strongly in favour of Beerwah East for future development. Poor internet speeds
We are Telstra customers and experience very poor internet speeds and have been informed by Telstra that this is due to congestion at the Beerwah exchange and we will have to wait for the NBN to become active in the district as there are no plans to upgrade this exchange. With the NBN tower not passing council approval, I cannot understand that the NBN wants to persist in building a tower to supply Beerwah with the NBN. Why can’t they run fibre cable down the existing (and not that old) Telstra pits that they have been doing in many areas? I had the NBN when in Tasmania which was wireless and the service was slower than when we were on the ‘old copper’ network, apparently due to trees obscuring the ‘direct line of sight’ that is required. The NBN website states that no NBN work is planned for this area until 2018 – surely it’s not that hard. Peter Wright Beerwah

Exercise and stay cool When it’s too hot to exercise have you thought about heading along to the Beerwah Pool for an Aqua Aerobics class? Desley Palmer has been teaching Aqua Aerobics classes for the past three years, however she is also a Personal Trainer, a Learn to Swim Instructor, Pilates Instructor, Group Fitness Instructor, Rugby Union 7s Coach and Touch Football Coach and Referee. "I love sharing my knowledge in order to help people achieve their personal goals whether they are big or small," Desley says. “I have a great enthusiastic group of men and women who are enjoying the personal gains of aqua aerobics, and there is no stipulation on age or fitness levels, because these classes are tailored for everyone. “These classes are also for the fitness fanatic who wants a variety of cross training in their fitness regime, which is still a fantastic challenge to them and is easier on the body and joints than pounding the concrete." Aqua Aerobics is also a good alternative for the older generation who are looking to stay active in a safe environment and meet new people who are all locals. Participants have a great time in the water, as well as gaining co-ordination, strength and flexibility. Classes are held on Tuesdays at 1.00pm, Wednesdays at 4.00pm and Saturdays at 9.00 am.

A cancer diagnosis can be an extremely difficult time for those affected, and their family and friends, which is why Cancer Council Queensland is reaching out to help. The Cancer Council will facilitate an eight-week mindfulness meditation group via teleconference starting in February. Up to one third of cancer patients experience ongoing psychological challenges, such as anxiety and depression, and need support. The Living Mindfully Telephone Group is a one-anda-half hour meditation program held on Thursdays from February 16 to April 6 to help those affected by cancer learn to cope with, and navigate through, the challenges that a diagnosis can bring. This group program, based on a combination of mindfulness meditation and cognitive therapy, is facilitated by health professionals and provides participants with meditation skills and tools to help them live more fully in the moment, rather than being caught up in worries. Learning new ways to manage challenging situations through mindfulness techniques can be useful for all of us, regardless of life stage or situation. Famous but doomed aviator Amelia Earhart joined the Zonta Club of New York in 1930 and in 1937 disappeared over the Pacific in an attempt to circumnavigate the globe. Zonta International established annual fellowships in her name for post graduate women in the field of aeronautical engineering and related sciences, and every January Zonta Clubs throughout the
world commemorate her achievements. Zonta Blackall Range invited noted author and pilot Prue Mason to speak to them at their January meeting at Wild Rocket Montville. Prue’s book ‘Amazing Australians in their Flying Machines’ will be published this year and she is currently working on the story of little-recognised early Australian aviatrix Jessie Miller.

The two hour cooking and wellness workshop, held at the Verandah at the Community Hall, showed the participants plenty of tips, tricks and substitutions to make dairy and gluten-free baking a breeze. What are your priorities for 2017?
As we embark on a fresh new year, I take this opportunity to wish all my constituents good health and happiness for 2017. I am excited to be back at work, delivering on many of the priorities I have identified, with the assistance of community members. I would urge you, if you have not done so already, to complete my community survey that was sent to all households in December. It is vital that I hear from you on what is important in your local area and what you want to see me working on for the Fisher electorate. If you did not receive a survey please call my office and one can be sent to you.
Whilst I have a considerable list of things I will be fighting for this year, I am always keen to hear what issues are important to you and what you think the priorities are for our region. Some of the issues already on my list include: • Rail duplication from Beerburrum to Nambour • Better car parking at Mt Ngun Ngun and Mt Tibrogargan • Upgrades to Maleny-Kenilworth Road • A new Maleny indoor aquatic centre and ‘drop n go’ • Safety upgrades at the Kilcoy-Beerwah Road intersection at Beerwah State School • Safety improvements at the Landsborough-Maleny Road and Maleny-Montville Road intersection Please add to my list, it’s a work in progress. Future Rail Duplication
Building Queensland recently released an infrastructure pipeline report that identified that the Beerburrum to Nambour rail line is ready for financial investment from the Queensland Government. Residents of South East Queensland have been calling for the completion of the North Coast Rail Duplication for years now and the time has come for the Palaszczuk Government to finally put money on the table. The Sunshine Coast is experiencing rapid growth and infrastructure and rail is critical to supporting this population increase. The now daily traffic jam that occurs along the Bruce Highway is evident that we not only need continued funding for road upgrades but we also need a rail network that can support commuters and freight and relieve pressure from the Bruce. The responsibility for rail infrastructure usually falls with the State Government, however, in conjunction with my colleague Member for Fairfax, Mr Ted O’Brien, we have made it a priority to lobby the Federal Government demonstrating the desperate need for this project. Some of you will recall we had the Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Hon Darren Chester, on the Coast late last year which included taking him on a personal tour of the Landsborough Rail station. During this visit he indicated that no one from the Queensland State Government has approached him in relation to a financial contribution from the Commonwealth for the duplication of the railway. I am very supportive of the local campaigns run by Andrew Powell MP, Member for Glass House and Mark McArdle MP, Member for Caloundra in their efforts to secure funds for this project and will do what I can to assist at a Federal level.

Landsborough-Maleny Road and MalenyMontville Road intersection
In October last year the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) advised me that they would be fully concreting the traffic islands at this intersection before the end of the year to permanently address the concern of vegetation impacting visibility. As we all know, the work has not been completed and I have requested an update from TMR as to when this work will take place. Fortunately the foliage in the traffic islands was cleared again last week after my urgent request to TMR, however we are all keen to hear when a permanent solution will eventuate. With regards to the intersection itself, I have written to TMR several times over the years on behalf of concerned constituents and TMR have advised, as recently as early this year, that they have no plans for future upgrades. I would like to work with the community to find a way to improve safety at this intersection, and one way we can do that is by petitioning the Government to immediately commission planning, funding and construction of safety upgrades considering all possible options, including but not restricted to: a roundabout, or improved lane delineation and slip lanes. I am keen to hear your comments and ideas and we will also need a principal petitioner to move forward, so if you are interested in taking on this role or wish to share anything, please email my office at glass.house@parliament.qld.gov.au. Warning signs in the works for Diamond Valley Residents have called for various warning signs to be installed on Ratcliffe Road and Diamond Valley Road, Diamond Valley. Multiple sites have been identified where additional warning signs can potentially be installed. It’s amazing how Christmas has come and gone and we have welcomed in the new year of 2017. We become accustomed to the way Australia ends the old year and starts the new year with all the popular sporting events over that period. The old year ends with the Boxing Day test and the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race. In tennis there is the Brisbane International, the Hopman Cup in Perth, the Apia International in Sydney and the Australian Open in Melbourne. In cricket there’s all the one day games and Twenty20 matches. Plus there are many other sporting events. If you like sports like I do, it’s a great time of the year. Each year we all will face opportunities and challenges; the Apostle Paul says this in 1Cor 16:9, “A huge door of opportunity… and mushrooming opposition.” What is so important is that we don’t allow the challenges to outweigh the opportunities, because if we do, we will just settle for the status quo. Parent Effectiveness Training is an internationally acclaimed course designed to teach parents communication and relationship skills which enhance relationships with children and other family members. Parents learn to respond empathetically to children and connect before they correct. Participants learn ways to get their needs met without using coercion and control, learn to build self-esteem, responsibility and resilience in children, and resolve family conflicts easily. He encourages us to do the same by having a relationship with him, He spoke these encouraging words: Mat 11:28, 29 and 30, "Come to me. Get away with me and you'll recover your life. Walk with me and work with me – watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won't lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Do you need help funding a conservation project? If you are planning a conservation project on your land, now is the time to lodge an expression of interest in securing one of Sunshine Coast Council’s Landholder Environment Grants. Council is committed to protecting and enhancing the Coast’s natural environment on both public and private land. One way it supports private rural land owners in their conservation efforts is through the Landholder Environment Grants program, funded through the Environment Levy. Grants are available for projects that will protect and enhance our region’s natural assets and biodiversity. In 2016, the Landholder Environment Grants program contributed $329,603 to assist 115 landholders in delivering on-ground environmental projects with a combined value of more than $1.3 million. Council is now calling for Expressions of Interest for 2017 Landholder Environment Grants. Head to council’s website and submit an EOI by midnight on Monday, February 20. Community and Environment Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said the grants were managed through a collaborative approach. “The Landholder Environment Grants process allows council and private rural land owners to work together to protect the environment,” Cr McKay said. “Through grant funding and advice, council provides assistance to private rural land owners wanting to conduct environmental protection or improvement projects on their land. “When an expression of interest has been submitted, a conservation partnerships officer will arrange to visit the property and discuss the project in more detail with the owner. “Projects could include the installation of fencing to restrict stock access to vegetation and waterways, revegetation to restore degraded areas, control of environmental weeds and the modification of fencing to make it more wildlifefriendly.” To be eligible for grant funding, projects must be completed on privately owned rural land within the Sunshine Coast Local Government Area. There are three stages in the Landholder Environment Grant application process: Step 1 – Expression of Interest: all applicants must submit an EOI form by midnight on Monday, February 20. Step 2 – Site visit: a conservation officer will visit your property to discuss the project. Step 3 – Online application: following the site visit, applicants must complete an online application form. Applications close at midnight on April 10, 2017. Contributed by Ian Hansen The recent combination of heat and humidity have adversely affected the number of players for daytime events, but Wednesday evening’s Twilight Challenge is still very well supported with 48 players, eight teams, competing last week. Apparently there were insufficient numbers for a competition on Tuesday afternoon as no results were recorded. Wednesday evening’s winning Teams were: Handles, Ben Bryce, Outlaws, Mighty 10, Sunstone, Mavericks, Wot Nots and there was a Tie between Mobile Kingdom and Krackerjacks. The lucky draw winners were: Lead - Graeme Glover, Second - Beth Glover and Skip - Margaret Ginns. The Touchers went to Henry Barbutt, Graeme Glover and Steve Ellett. The Money Board winners were Jackie Montgomery and Allan Cook (nearly wins as often as Joe Walters). The Mystery Raffle winner was Derek Wilson. Friday there were only three rinks of Scroungers and quite a few of the players finished looking somewhat exhausted – but it was hot and humid. The winners on their respective rinks were: Joe Walters, Harold Hopper and Graeme Glover. The only member in attendance and so able to claim her Sponsors’ Prize was Faye Petersen who won the Day Lilly Prize. Scott Alexander was the lucky Money Board winner. Beerwah Women make Auckland Nines and All Stars teams Beerwah Bulldogs women’s rugby league players have again been selected to play in the Auckland Nines and Women’s All Stars teams. Annette Brander has been picked to play for the Jillaroos in the Auckland Nines for the third successive season. Annette said the team is very keen to have a real crack at the Kiwi Ferns this year. The ladies play one match on the Saturday with two matches on the Sunday of the Nines competition. Beerwah’s Stef Gallagher and new signing Steph Hancock will line up for the All Stars to take on the Indigenous All Stars on February 10 at Newcastle. The Beerwah women were one of only three women’s rugby league teams graded in the A Division in the 15 team South-East Queensland competition last season. The team were very competitive during the season and defeated the eventual premiers Burleigh in a close fought match at Beerwah in July. Beerwah captain and former Jillaroo, Samantha Beasant, said the selection of the Beerwah ladies is due recognition of the standard of football being played by the team. “The Beerwah side has been at the top of the South-East Queensland competition for the last four seasons and the representative ladies always bring new skills back to the team from the quality games they get at that level,“ Samantha said. The Beerwah side has commenced training under new coach Mick Templeman, who brings a wealth of experience to the club.

Ladies winner went to Seri Tytherleigh with 29 points, runner-up went to Robin Hay with 28 points. Nearest to Pin went to Margaret Trigger (5th hole), Toni Bishop (3rd hole), Chris Pottinger (14th hole) and Gary Dallyn (12th hole). Wednesday, January 18: The ladies played in a 9 hole Stableford Competition with first place going to Toni Bishop with 16 points, runner-up went to Susanne Hardy with 15 points on a count-back from third place winner, Beth Glover with 15
points. Nearest to the Pin went to Susanne Hardy on the 5th hole and Toni Bishop on the 3rd hole. Friday, January 20: We held our usual Friday Chook-Run Competition with first place going to Steve Porter with 25 points, runner-up went to Doug Moore with 22 points and third place went to John Ecuyer with 21 points. Saturday, January 21: Our club held an 18 Hole Foursomes Competition and the team of Corey Zammit and Mike Finley came first with 68 nett. Runners-up were Rob Bailo and Garth Bailo with 68.5 nett. Third place went to John Hay and Don Portway with 69 nett. Nearest to the Pin was Corey Zammit on the 5th hole and Gary Dallyn on the 14th hole.
