Hi Everyone Last week when I was reading Mike Turners ‘From the Churches’ column I was struck by how simple Mike’s message was but how important it is in many aspects of our lives. The title of his column was ‘Gratitude not Attitude’ and he talked about all the things in his life he is grateful for. This got me thinking that as individuals we can be grateful, but as a community it is so important that we are not only grateful for things, but acknowledge the individuals who make them happen. At the end of last year we received a letter from Gavin Stewart on behalf of the Glasshouse Rural Fire Brigade, thanking those local people and businesses that had helped to contribute to the success of their Rural Fire activities. I for one am grateful that we live in a community where there are
so many individuals who are so generous with their time and are happy to contribute to make our community such a great place. And just as importantly, I am grateful that we have so many local businesses that are really happy to support the numerous groups that make requests to them throughout the year. And while I am sure they appreciate being thanked for their time or receiving a certificate of appreciation – you can also send us a short contribution to say thanks and ensure that the rest of the GCNews community know about their good deeds. And most importantly remember to spend your money with these businesses and help keep our local economy going.

It’s not just water that is boosting the volume of the Ewen Maddock Dam of late. The dam is now home to a significant number of Australian Bass fingerlings, 30,000 in fact, which were released into its waters last week. Steve Evans of Ewen Maddock Fish Management Inc said the restocking event was an important part of the management plan for the dam, which had been achieved by working closely with officers from Queensland Fisheries. He said the aims of the restocking were twofold – to both increase the number of fish eventually available for recreational fishing, and for the health and ecology of the waterway. He said it was only the second time the group of volunteers who make up the Ewen Maddock Fish Management had restocked the dam, after an initial restocking event in February last year. They also look after the stocking program at Baroon Pocket Dam, which also welcomed a similar number of fingerlings last week. The group, who are committed to improving the health of the dam through their restocking program, receive funding through grants from both Council and the State Government, as well as relying on their own fundraising efforts and support from sponsors.

Campaigning for the 2012 local government elections is now underway in earnest following last week’s announcement of the Election Day, March 31. Queensland voters will elect a total of 73 mayors and 488 local councillors throughout the state on March 31, with the electoral roll for the local government elections closing next week, on Tuesday, January 31. Enrolment and voting are compulsory. Nomination of candidates officially opens on Saturday, February 11 and closes on Tuesday, February 28. Currently, there are five candidates who have announced their intention to contest Division 1, which is about to be vacated by retiring councillor Anna Grosskreutz. In neighbouring Division 5, sitting councillor Jenny McKay has already announced her intention to recontest the seat. To date, the only other candidate who has indicated their intention to run in this division is Charles Hodgson. Cr McKay has called for a series of mayoral forums to be held across the hinterland in the lead up to the election, saying it’s the best way to approach an independent process offering residents the opportunity to be heard. “I am leading this action because not only am I the current divisional councillor but I have a
strong affiliation with the hinterland and I know of the importance of a seamless region, not a divided one. “I have 12 years experience behind me; I know what we need the most in the hinterland is equitable representation. All candidates need to recognise that we exist, and not only just to contribute towards paying rates. These are my communities and I am, and will, remain passionate about equality for all of these unique little townships that generate growth and wealth that is distributed throughout the Sunshine Coast region.” Over the past two months, GCNews has been running a series of ‘ask the candidate’ questions. See this week’s questions and responses on page 15. These will continue in coming weeks, and keep an eye out in future editions for any updates or candidate announcements. Processing of postal vote applications will commence in early March, with pre-poll centres open from March 19. Further information is available on the Electoral Commission of Queensland website www.ecq.qld.gov.au The website also contains a list of all councils and the particular election arrangements that will operate in each. This includes a total of 30 councils that have opted to conduct their elections as full postal ballots.

From tears, tantrums and tissues to excitement and eager anticipation, this week has been one of mixed emotion for many households across the region, as around 300 preppies put on their school uniforms and headed off to school for the first time.

As their education journey begins, for others their education journey is well underway, and for a select few it is coming to a close, as they embark on their final year of formal schooling. Meanwhile, in the background, providing support, encouragement and a good dose of courage, are the parents. Many parents across the region have found solace in sharing their emotions. We asked mums and dads of preppies to tell us how they were coping in the lead up to the big day via our Facebook page. Donna Sawka was one mum whose daughter couldn’t wait to get to ‘big’ school, just like her older brother and sister. Vicky Bedford Vandevorst said although she was happy to see her youngest head off to school, she was going to miss their time together on their ‘buddy’ days, while Carla Schultz was as nervous as her son was excited.

Five-and-a-half-year-old Tabitha Little, was very excited about her first day of school, and looking forward to buddying up with her neighbour, Year 7 student and school vice captain, Sarah Lillecrapp. Four-year-old Mia McLeod was equally excited, but for a different reason. According to mum Lisa, who was expecting to shed plenty of tears herself as her ‘baby’ went off to school, Mia couldn’t wait to get to school to keep an eye on her older siblings, twins Jacob and Lilly, who are in Year 1, and big sister Alannah, who is in Year 4. Beerwah State School deputy principal Michelle McCabe said the school was expecting a big year, with 25 new enrolments in the last two days before school started.

True blue Aussie makes it official
He already considers himself a true blue Aussie, but Glass House Mountains resident Peter Robertson has decided it’s finally time to make it official. Peter will be one of more than 200 residents who will celebrate Australia Day tomorrow by becoming an Australian citizen. Peter immigrated from New Zealand with his family as a young boy nearly 30 years ago, and with his wedding to well known fitness guru Bianca Aiono looming later this year, he decided Australia Day was the perfect time to become a citizen. “I’m already an Aussie as far as I am concerned, but as a small business owner, I felt it was important to be able to have a say, and be able to cast my vote at election time,” Peter said. This year marks the 100 year anniversary of when our federal electoral system was changed,

so that all citizens became obliged to enrol to vote, and the 50 year anniversary of indigenous Australians gaining the right to vote. Council will host an Australia Day citizenship ceremony at Noosaville tomorrow, from 9.00am.

After Chairman of Church Council Dianne Cox, finished ‘roasting’ retiring minister of Glasshouse Country Uniting Church Rev George Woodward, she presented Rev George and Bernadette with a beautiful white orchid, plus some mementoes of their five and a half years with our congregation. The pouring rain could not dampen the spirits of the crowds as they came to say their farewells at a wonderful relaxed outdoor meal. Interspersed with the singing of several of Rev George's favourite hymns many people spoke of how George had touched their lives. There were tears and laughter as George was roasted as being ‘scruffy’. Beneath the scruffiness there is a loving, kind, caring, Christian man who will be sadly missed not only at Glasshouse Country Uniting Church but also at Embracia where he has endeared himself to staff and residents alike.

The group we had the privilege of hosting was the Sunshine Coast Chapter Australia Harley Davidson Owners Group. The group started at the Sunshine Coast Harley Davidson dealership in Maroochydore and after their stop with us, headed then to Pelican Waters. Bikes had been ‘blinged up’ with Christmas cheer decorations, and after re-energising with some homemade food and a cuppa, they were led off on their way by their very own Santa on a Harley, the roar of the engines was excitingly deafening. Landsborough Girl Guides had a huge year in 2011. Five of the senior Guides earned their gold Centenary challenge badge, and three of them travelled to New Zealand where they met up with other Girl Guides from the United Kingdom and the US to be part of at a Centenary camp. Government one stop shop rolls into town Last week, the car park at Coochin Creek Co-Op, in Simpson Street, Beerwah, became a temporary bus stop when the Australian Government Mobile office rolled into town. The service was in town to provide locals with a one-stop shop for a range of federal government services that aren’t normally locally available. The purpose built vehicle, one of only two in Australia, hosted nearly 20 staff from a range of federal government agencies including Australian Hearing Service, Medicare, Centrelink, Job Services, the AEC, CRS and Child Support Agency. Mobile Office manager Kathy Sack said the visit was a way of making federal government payments and services more accessible. “In regional and remote areas, people don’t always have easy access to government agencies,” Kathy said. “By rolling out the mobile office into these areas, we are able to help those customers who would prefer to speak face to face with an officer, rather than lodge a claim or access payments and information online or over the phone. Last week’s visit was the first time the mobile office has visited the local area since it was launched in 2006 as a response to the severe drought that affected many parts of the country.

The mobile office staff represented a range of federal government agencies Kathy said the mobile office had received a good response from locals, who were keen to take advantage of the opportunity for personal service and the wide range of information available. “Our staff, too, enjoy getting out of the office and offering more personal service to their customers and often comment on how much they enjoy the first hand contact,” she said. After visiting Maleny later in the week, the mobile office was heading north, to Tiaro, Howard and Woodgate this week.

News in Brief Maleny precinct works begin Work is about to get underway on the Maleny precinct works program. Division 5 Councillor Jenny McKay said the Maleny Community Precinct Master Plan was a culmination of many years of community and council collaboration to provide community-use facilities on former agricultural land. She said 2012 will be a year of delivery, with $2 million to be invested in precinct works. One of the first projects to start will be the walking trails, scheduled to commence construction after the wet season ends in April, and the access road and car park behind Pattemore House. Earlier this month Greenhills, in partnership with council, have started vegetation work along Obi Obi Creek as part of their Caring for our Country Community Action Grant. Further priority works planned in 2012 include construction of the first part of the Parkland Drive access road into the precinct. It is also hoped that the Maleny Golf’s Material Change of Use (MCU) for the first nine holes of its golf course will be finalised in the next few weeks.
Calls to join light rail taskforce Council is calling for representatives to join its Light Rail 2020 Taskforce. Council resolved in August last year to establish a taskforce to help deliver a sleek, modern light rail on the Sunshine Coast by 2020. Members will work with the council project team, elected councillors and senior executives to develop a business case for light rail on the Sunshine Coast which will also include review and rapid assessment of other transport options. They will deliver the pre-feasibility study by the end of April. Future requirements for taskforce work beyond April will be determined by council in deciding whether to progress to a full feasibility study. Community Group Updates Glasshouse Country View Club
Contributed by Pauline Clarke, publicity officer Glasshouse Country View Club held its annual general meeting on Wednesday, January 18 at the Glasshouse Sports Club. The proceedings were overseen by View Club national councillor Ann McKenna who thanked the outgoing committee for all their hard work over the year and welcomed in the new committee. The next View Club function, at 9.30am on Wednesday, February 1, will be a trip to Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve followed by a bring and share lunch. The next club meeting, where a speaker will be talking on premature babies, will be in the Glasshouse Sports Club at 11.00am for 11.30am on Wednesday,
February 15. Our club is a non-profit friendship club that supports the Smith Family chiefly through the Foundation’s Learning for Life program for disadvantaged students. The Smith Family is a national, independent children’s charity helping disadvantaged Australian children to get the most out of their education, so they can create better futures for themselves. Glasshouse Country Menshed

The men have had a few weeks R&R after the very successful Christmas gathering, with photos of the final get together for 2011 being published in the GCNews. The men have now acquired a 20 foot shipping container that has been installed at the Beerwah Resource Centre for the men to store materials awaiting use. They have received donations of all types of materials but can only use so much each week. The men would like to thank the Rotary Club of Glasshouse Mountains, Community Recycling and Hanson Construction Materials who assisted with the purchase and setting up of the container. The men have started work on the planning and installation of the shelving to fit out the container. The leather working team, small engine repairs and the veggie garden are now back in full swing. This invitation to all men in the Glasshouse Country who are at a loose end on a Wednesday morning from 8.30am - 12.30pm, come along to the Recourse Recovery Centre in Roberts Road, Beerwah, join us for a cuppa, meet some great men and if you have some skills, bring them along with you or just come along and learn some new skills. The Menshed is all about men’s health and helping each other. The formation of the Glasshouse Country Prostate Cancer support group is a project the men have embraced in partnership with the Sunshine Coast Prostate Cancer support group. The group was formed to support men and their families on the southern end of the coast and north of the Pine River. The Glasshouse Country group meet on the second Wednesday of the month at the Mary MacKillop Centre, 160 Peachester, Beerwah. The next gathering will be on February 8, at 5.30pm for a shared meal and guest speaker Dr Troy Gianduzzo. Dr Troy is a Urologist specialising in robotic prostate surgery. What is the truth?
The three activists who boarded the Japanese whaling vessel Shona Maru 2 have created quite a lot of publicity for whatever reasons, but there is a nasty taste about the whole episode. The Gillard government is stating that the boarding took place outside Australian waters. The Master of the Sea Shepard has stated that he has proof that the boarding occurred within Australian waters but it appears the government never requested or investigated the proof the Master claimed to have; rather accepting the Japanese claim that this action took place outside our jurisdiction. This begs the question, what proof did they provide to justify their claim? The government has not attempted to validate their statement with any proof whatsoever. So who is lying? As far as the cost of repatriation of the three individuals there seems to be two separate arguments being touted. 1. The Attorney General, Nicola Roxon is being blamed by ‘accepting’ that the Japanese were outside our legal jurisdiction, the boarding was illegal and the government has to therefore pay for the repatriation of these Australian citizens after negotiations with the Japanese government. 2. The Sea Shepard claims to have offered to transfer the three men from the Shona Maru 2 to the Sea Shepard at no cost to us taxpayers, but this offer was refused by our government. A customs vessel and crew was then deflected from their normal activities to effect the repatriation, hence the ‘enormous’ expense claimed by Gillard and Roxon. So what is the truth? Frankly I find Gillard’s public statements of concern on this matter of ‘enormous cost’, hypercritical when she is spending millions of dollars on immigrants who are indisputably entering Australian waters illegally. One other matter which requires airing is the use of ‘ghost flights’ by our Politians. Ghost flight means the use of an aircraft to fly one politician as the only passenger aboard that flight. The aircraft either flies empty to collect the pollie or returns empty to its home base after the pollie disembarks. Defence Minister Stephen Smith cost taxpayers $122,672 in the six months to July 2011 for five such ghost flights. Airport for Glasshouse again?
Some residents of Glasshouse Country may not be aware that the above issue has once again reared its ugly head. A recent Sunshine Coast Daily article stated that Mayoral candidate Debbie Blumel proposed to request the state government to hand the Caloundra Airport land back to the Sunshine Coast Council. Her idea if elected as mayor would be to pursue the previously rejected proposal to relocate the airport to Glass House Mountains. Debbie Blumel has obviously forgotten the resounding opposition from our area to this idea, or does she consider the bottom end of the shire to be of no consequence? When we vote for our mayoral candidate at the next council election (in March), we need to be aware of their vision for this area, the Heritage listed Glass House Mountains. Every year the volunteer committee and its members need regular income to ensure the hall remains open and available to the community. Get along to Glasshouse Markets
I would like to congratulate the evidently creative and energetic organisers of the new monthly Glasshouse Market held at the Glass House Mountains State School hall. The first two markets, in December and January, had a great variety of stalls – everything from fresh fruit and veggies, beautiful hand-made cards, yummy jams and sauces, and cute kids clothing, to a diverse range of quality gift and home decoration ideas, such as hand-made silver jewellery and unique mosaic art (lots of potential birthday gifts, for those of us whose imagination is still recovering from the Christmas list, on that stall alone). Clever ideas such as free fridge magnets with the dates of all 2012 markets, infants’ play pen and coffee shop menus pasted into kids books (great way to keep the kids occupied while parents recharge with a coffee), show the organisers have put a lot of thought into this venture. I hope locals really get behind our new monthly market – if we support the stall holders, they will keep coming back, and the whole community benefits when local businesses and craftspeople can make a living locally. 1. The land to the west of Beerwah Library, Hall and Turner Park is privately owned. The State Government purchased a portion of this land parcel in order to construct the road linkage between Roberts and Peachester Roads. There is currently a Development Application lodged with Council. Previous to the State Government's $70m Beerwah Open Level Crossing Project, the land had a Development Approval for an Over 50’s retirement and lifestyle village. Council land adjoining Turner Park is a designated wetland and home to a range of wildlife. The gifting of this land by the Turner family has given Beerwah a wonderful central park. The new bridge linking the Community Hall and Library with Turner Park draws this community space together. Peachester Road is a State Government controlled road and falls under the jurisdiction of the Department of Main Roads, not Council. It can however make recommendations to Government and I intend to work with our elected State Members to further community safety improvements as Beerwah continues to develop. 3. Council has no immediate plans to centralise its administration to Maroochydore, it operates out of its former centres at Caloundra, Nambour and Tewantin. As Cr Anna Grosskreutz already has her offices in Caloundra and Beerwah, this serves our electorate well and allows community the opportunity to discuss issues of importance in a private setting. I intend to follow this tradition as well as linking with our state and federal members as they meet with residents in various locations throughout the year.

That 17 mayors have indicated they are standing down in 2012 is evidence of the difficulties created, but I do support endeavours to concentrate council officers in a central location. With both Council and residents adapting to new geographical boundaries, it is essential that contact centres be established in outlying communities such as ours. www.gcnews.com.au
As for the water/swampland, this is another issue. It is a breeding ground for mosquitos, not to mention other health risks. There is nothing stopping a young child from running off, and into the swamp. I know a lot of people will say ‘the parents should have been watching’ but we all know how quick a young child can be. Does a child need to die before this is drained or proper drainage facilities are implemented?

We proposed that it should include exotic flowering trees from similar climates. We pictured children exploring the wetlands using the network of safe paths and bridges, of which only one decrepit bridge remains. The wetlands area should stay. It is part of the precinct's ecology and character. However, in its current state, I understand why Steve called it a swamp. Council has failed to maintain or improve the park to proper standards. Maintaining our public spaces to an equal standard across the division is an important issue for me, which I raised before today. The state government also shares in the responsibility to fix the problem as the new road turned the wetland into swampland. Turner Park precinct should be a jewel in the crown of our community. If elected, I give a heartfelt guarantee to make it so again.

that it should be transferred from state to council control so we can include it in the 'building a better Beerwah' process. It has great mountain views but is massively underutilised. Of course we should use developer contributions for works in applicable situations.

Chambers will see centralisation of Council. So No, I do not believe that this will equate to a greater benefit to us here in Division 1. The bureaucrats and candidates are not the ones who solve them. So by centering them in Maroochydore we need a Councillor who can go there and represent us, not follow like timid lambs asking for handouts.
Council has a history of wasting money. The issue is, how are we going to ensure the funds raised from the residents of Division 1, are directed towards the purpose they are raised for. A Councillor needs a strong vision, to deliver on all issues. JANUARY 25 2012 |

New booster vaccine protects toddlers against deadly disease Parents of children aged 12-35 months old are being urged to ensure their child has a dose of the new vaccine to protect them against the deadly pneumococcal disease, which claimed the lives of three Queensland toddlers last year. Queensland Health Communicable Diseases Branch Senior Director Christine Selvey said the pneumococcal vaccine had been improved to protect against more strains of bacteria. These extra strains were becoming more common because the older vaccine was eliminating previously common strains. “Children currently aged 12-35 months will have received the older vaccine, so we’re encouraging parents to ensure those children receive a free supplementary shot, which provides wider protection,” Dr Selvey said. She said the pneumococcal vaccine (Prevenar) was introduced for all children in 2005 and provided protection against seven common www.gcnews.com.au
strains of the bacteria that causes pneumococcal disease. The new vaccine (Prevenar 13) protects against the seven strains of pneumococcal bacteria in the older vaccine (Prevenar), plus an extra six strains. Three Queensland toddlers died last year from pneumococcal disease due to a strain called 19A, which has been increasing. This strain is covered in the new vaccine, not the older one. The pneumococcal vaccine is routinely administered when babies are aged two months, four months and six months. The new vaccine has been administered for babies since July 1 last year and the booster is now available for children in the target age group who received the old vaccine. “If you have a child aged 12-35 months, ask your GP or immunisation provider for the supplementary dose against pneumococcal disease,” Dr Selvey said.
Babies who were vaccinated with the old vaccine should have the supplementary dose when they turn one; babies who have already had the new vaccine with the additional six strains don’t need another dose. Children aged three years or older also don’t need the supplementary dose as they have a much lower risk of pneumococcal disease. Children with a chronic medical condition may need a pneumococcal vaccine booster and should speak to their doctor or immunisation provider. Pneumococcal disease is caused by the bacterium Streptococcus pneumoniae (also known as the pneumococcus) which are commonly carried in the nose and throat without causing any health problems. There are several strains of the bacteria, some more likely than others to cause disease, which most commonly affect children aged under two years and people aged over 65 years. JANUARY 25 2012 |

I am waiting on Steve Irwin Way to add multiples to our already escalating road deaths in Queensland this year. Not once have I heard or seen where our local members, state or federal, or for that matter, our illustrious No 1 candidate or the many aspiring replacements mention or concern themselves with the condition of our own local time bomb, Steve Irwin Way. If you have not been on Steve Irwin Way of late, then please, do not travel on it during this rain period as it is extremely dangerous in sections. Why? There are definite troughs in both north and south bound lanes, because the road surface is old, it still allows the spray and following a vehicle in front of you makes it very difficult to see oncoming vehicles, that also works for oncoming vehicles, you have no idea what is actually travelling behind them either. Troughs are extremely dangerous in roadways, they fill with water firstly, you have no idea as to what depth they go and a speed greater than 80km/h causes your vehicle to aquaplane, and then you have no control whatsoever. UDIA Mayoral forum to flesh out Coast’s next leader
The UDIA Sunshine Coast is hosting a Mayoral forum on February 24 at Maroochy RSL Events Centre to give locals the chance to hear from all candidates. Tohm's A-Z of Gardening E is for Elaeocarpus Elaeocarpus is a large genus of shrubs and trees found throughout the tropical and subtropical regions of Asia and the Pacific Islands. Of the 350 species, Australia is home to about 30, many of which can be found in our rainforests. The name is derived from the Greek words for olive tree (elaia) and fruit (carpos) referring to the brightly coloured drupes found on the plant. These are attractive plants with species suiting different size gardens from the Blueberry Ash (E. reticularis) which makes a nice specimen tree at 8 metres tall, to the magnificent Blue Quandong (E. augustifolius syn. grandis) which can reach heights of 35 metres with buttressed roots and is prized for its timber. The flowers of Elaeocarpus plants are small, pendulous and fringed, but thanks to the abundance of flowers, can give the appearance of thousands of tiny ballerinas dancing through the foliage. Most flower with white petals though one cultivar of the Blueberry Ash known as Prima Donna has soft pink petals. The flowers are also fragrant. Often the older leaves turn bright red creating a striking contrast with the dark green of the rest of the plant. Some species also have pink or bronze coloured young leaves. This flush is particularly attractive on the Smooth Leafed Quondong (E. eumundii).

The fruit has an edible flesh over a hard, woody stone containing up to five seeds. It attracts birds such as rainforest pigeons. Germination of the seed can take up to two years though this can be sped up by scarifying or fermenting the seed. Better propagation results can be obtained by taking semi hardwood cuttings. Mostly, Elaeocarpus prefer to be grown without any pruning. Poorly pruned specimens will develop odd shapes. One exception is E. reticularis. Pruning will encourage it to bush out rather than develop a single trunk, making it suitable for dense hedges.

Here’s to a great new year of bowls. It started Wednesday, January 11 with a Jackpot Triples game. Winners were Millie Freshwater, Rob Scullion and Jim Tatum. The Jackpot prize of $135.00 went to Kate White, Rhyllis Aitken and John Aitken. Wednesday, January 18 was rained out. Open Pairs on Thursday, January 12 had a morning and an afternoon game - AM Winners were Ernie Sherwood and Robbie Dean, PM Winners were Mac Townson and Alan Pashby. Open Pairs on Thursday, January19 had AM winners Ron Wilson and Bob Bloomer, PM Winners were Millie Freshwater and JimTatum. Saturday, January 14 saw the start of the Queensland Super Challenge Competition. Our Division 7 played Feny Grove BC. Seven teams took part. Only the men’s pairs and fours had a win. Saturday, January 21 saw our Division 10 men’s teams play. Five teams played with no wins. Club Glass House members are welcome to come and watch these games. The next will be Saturday afternoon, February 4 from 1.00pm. On Australia Day there is planned a special team selected Triples Game. There are spare players looking to make up a team.

The 2012 AFL season is fast approaching and the Glasshouse Hinterland Lions are gearing up for another growth year. Following on from the success of our Under 16’s and Seniors last year, 2012 will see the re introduction of an Under 18 side to complete the progression of ages from Auskick through to Seniors. The Senior team will be coached by Dan Baker who brings with him a wealth of experience and enthusiasm. The Seniors and 18’s are currently training at Tunnel Ridge Road on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6.00pm. Sign on for seniors and 18’s can be done at Thursday night training with an upcoming barbecue sign on night in the near future. The Juniors will once again see teams in the U8’s, 10’s, 12’s, 14’s and 16’s with numbers in all groups looking good. The Junior league is also forming a Girls only U15 competition, so if we can get enough girls aged between 12 and 15 we will enter a team. The Junior Sign On will be held on Saturday, February 11 and Sunday, February 12 from 10.00am to 2.00pm. Lions Mascot Bernie Gabba Vegas will be appearing on the Sunday from 12.00noon to 12.30pm with Giveaways. A sausage sizzle will be held each day. On Thursday, February 16 at approximately 4.30pm we will have at least three or four members of the BRISBANE LIONS to meet with players at our ground. We will give further details in upcoming weeks. Welcome everyone to a brand new year of golf at Beerwah Golf Club. We had a bit of a soggy start to the year on Thursday. It was hot and muggy and a bit wet under foot however, 27 hardy souls played a Stableford event for a trophy supplied by the Club. Teresa Keast was our winner with a total of 35 points. Andrea Campbell came in second on 33 points. Cathy Stone had her radar fine tuned again scoring three NTPs on 2, 5 and 18. Sue Greentree collected the ball for the 16th. Let’s hope the rain stays away for next week’s game. Till then, good golfing.

Sporting organisations can plan for terrific turf with a helping hand from Sunshine Coast Council in 2012. The role of the Parks Community Sports Field Officer is to assist community field sport organisations in the region by providing expert advice on all things to do with maintaining sports fields regardless of whether the club maintains their fields with their dedicated volunteers, or contracts the work out. This ongoing initiative has grown from the sports field maintenance project council conducted last year. The new Parks Community Sports Field Officer is available to meet with clubs and provide expert advice on the most effective and sustainable ways clubs can maintain sporting fields.
