Hi Everyone... Last Sunday I headed along to the wonderful centenary celebrations at Beerburrum State School. What a fantastic day! There was clearly a buzz of excitement in the air when I arrived during the formal part of proceedings. I imagine it may have been one of the biggest crowds that would have ever been packed onto the parade area. Along with absolutely hundreds of students both past and present, there were also plenty of former members of staff who attended. There was also a full complement of politicians on hand, including the Mayor, Mark Jameson, the Federal Member, Andrew Wallace, the State Member, Andrew Wallace and the local councillor, Rick Baberowski, but I guess it isn’t that often that they would get to go to a school centenary. Once the official part of the day had been completed, the massive cake cut and guests could move on to the social part of the day, the buzz of energy in the crowd became more of a roar, with so many people catching up and sharing their stories.

Cover Story Local participation in the Games It was holiday in name only for a number of the staff and students of Beerwah High, who joined 15,000 others as volunteers for the twenty-first Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast over the Easter vacation. Lynn Thomas, herself a skilled pistol shooter, was part of the technical crew in aiming and scoring at the Belmont Shooting Range. Barb Mullins was a team leader for Spectator Services at Broadbeach for the lawn bowls competition, and Kath Bateman was part of the 220-strong spectator services team at Coomera Sports Centre which played host to the gymnastics competition as well as the nail-biting semi-finals and medal games in netball. The Sunshine Coast also celebrated the Games and Bernice Cammell was in the thick of the Festival of Champions at Cotton Tree Park, helping out wherever required.
For Year 10 students Ashley McIntyre and Gabby Shaw, the Games offered a once in a lifetime opportunity (at least so far). Both girls were dancers in the Closing Ceremony, performing in front of a global television audience of millions. Josh Curtis’s Games experience was a little different. Josh, who recently completed his Masters of Professional Practice (Performing Arts) at the University of the Sunshine Coast, was both one of the composers and a performer in the acclaimed Zen Zen Zo production ‘Alchemy’ which has been described as the highlight of Festival 2018 at Southbank. The volunteers have been universally praised for the role they played in shaping the Games. The Beerwah High contingent are all proud to have been part of the experience, and would do it again in a heartbeat.

Mixed reaction to Pioneer Park plan Communities are grown and not made, is a maxim often heard. Maleny is a community which definitely fits into that paradigm, where divergent views are a way of life which are shared loudly, freely and often. One important aspect of a community is the mix of open space which allows the residents and visitors space to breathe, space to relax, space to be active, space to reflect and space to appreciate the surroundings. Parks have always been a hot topic of discussion, intrigue, vexation and at times conspiracy theories in Maleny. But they are also one of the foundations of what makes Maleny ‘different’. The Maleny District Sports and Recreation Club (MDSRC) last week announced plans to establish a Memorial and Pioneer Community Park on lands adjacent to the Maleny Light Horse Regiment’s Beersheba Living Museum. The 126 hectares of land known as the Maleny Community Precinct encompasses a variety of leaseholders, user groups and precincts, including Barung Landcare (for a future permanent education and resource centre), Maleny Golf Club, Friends of Pattemore House, Unity Water (ecological parklands and wetlands) and the MDSRC. Also included is a walking trail which is planned to be expanded to link through to Gardners Falls. MDSRC holds the lease for a large portion of
the site which has been designated for provision of sporting grounds and facilities, with the area being called Maleny Sports Park. As reported in the GC&M News, the heritage memorial park concept is a cooperative between a number of local service groups and includes the provision for playgrounds, picnic areas, viewing platforms, and signage and statues honouring local Indigenous, pioneering and WWI and WWII service women. Local noted historian and spokesperson for the Maleny Cultural and Historical Society, Desley Malone, is looking forward to the new park. “The Maleny Cultural and Historical Society congratulate the MDSRC on this project and look forward to supporting them and the Service Clubs,” Mrs Malone said.

Braddon holds a Bachelor of Health Science from Charles Sturt University, a Master of Clinical Exercise Physiology and a Diploma of Clinical Pilates. “What a marvellous concept to have a Memorial and Pioneer Community Park as part of their commitment to the community. “Their plan to recognise the history and role of the Indigenous, pioneer, wars and service women of the Blackall Range is awesome. “So many hard working and dedicated women have contributed so much to make our community what it is today. As time passes, they’re forgotten. “This concept will enable people to learn, appreciate and remember their contributions. I can’t think of any better way than a walk through a memorial park to keep the memories alive of our past women.” However, although the plans are welcomed, according to local community park advocate Jane Hyde, the vision of the MDSRC is off focus. Ms Hyde is the organiser of a newly formed ‘digital community organisation’ called Community Parks Maleny. Their website describes them as being formed recently to campaign for the Maleny community on issues of common concern, independently of special interests, to seek generous recreational space with facilities and amenities complementing the Maleny Trail on the Maleny Community Precinct. “The Maleny Community Precinct is supposed to include ‘extensive areas of open space in the form of parks and gardens’, according to the Maleny Local Plan Code,” said Ms Hyde. “So we must be grateful that the leaders of the Maleny Sport and Recreation Club in collaboration
with Lions, Apex, Rotary and the RSL have plans for a ‘Memorial and Pioneer Community Park’ on land beside the Precinct’s Parkland Drive. “The vision for the park is puzzling,” claimed Ms Hyde. “Maleny is already home to an historic pioneer village as well as a beautiful little park between the RSL Hall and the Obi Obi Creek honouring those who served or fell at war. A proposed Indigenous element will require the approval of the people it presumes to honour. “A fenced space in which children will be allowed to play may be a little old fashioned from a child’s point of view compared with the natural, adventurous style of today’s parks. The Nature Play Space in Cairns is a superb example.” Ms Hyde also calls into question the validity of the Precinct Advisory Group – a committee established to provide a forum to progress the plans on the precinct as a whole. “‘Ratification’ of the park by a ‘Precinct Advisory Group’ raises concerns as membership is limited to a coterie of lease and sub-lease holders. This not only excludes people with expertise in parks but also the community in all its variety, old and young, fit and frail, whom parks exist to serve. “If the planning of parks on Precinct land, leased and unleased, were subject to an open, professional process led by Council in the community interest, where would we be? “First, the best site for a spacious park on the popular, accessible Southern Precinct would almost certainly prove to be Platypus Bend, a site
leased by MDSRC and vacant for eight years but passed over, inexplicably, in favour of the lesser site on Parkland Drive. “Second, the community would be heard without having to start campaigns. One of our supporters who uses a wheelchair was reduced to tears when she heard that the Precinct doesn’t even have an access plan. “If the elders of MDSRC, Lions, etc, really want to get into parks, they should start their thinking not with themselves but with her and the mothers and fathers and children and babies and young people and oldsters who make up our community.”

Glenview waterpark in the news The long-awaited ‘Actventure’ waterpark at Glenview has been in the news lately, with reports that parent company Sanad Capital has taken the Sunshine Coast Council to the Planning and Environment Court in a dispute over infrastructure charges. As part of the approval for Stage 1, Council levied storm water infrastructure charges of over $800,000… a fee which Sanad described in their court submission as “so unreasonable that no reasonable local government could have imposed it.” The matter was listed to be heard again last Friday (April 20). In another matter, a convoluted tale of court cases has concluded with a waterpark expert, Arthur Downing, successfully appealing a decision in which a group of waterpark investors sued him for $264,000. A Brisbane Fairfax media outlet has reported that Mr Downing, who claimed to be promised a $1.25 million payout for his part in finding and securing the land at Glenview, was never paid. Sanad dispute the claim and the matter is ongoing. And in another twist, Sanad last week released concept plans for what they describe as an “innovative leisure park” over eight hectares of the 25 hectare site. The area is planned to provide for a mix of cabins, powered caravan and camping sites, and glamping tents. Sanad Capital CEO Bradley P Sutherland said: “Luxury camping has become an appealing option for holidaymakers across the globe. The Sunshine Coast desperately requires more rooms to accommodate the rising tourism numbers, and with more and more families keen to have the glamping experience rather than staying in a hotel, we thought what better way to satisfy that demand than place a focus on it within our masterplan. It fits perfectly with our branding.” But according to the graphic provided, the new concept may have to have come at the expense of the resort and hotel complex, with the camping

‘leisure park’ placed squarely where the resort complex was originally mapped. This was described by the developers as being a four-star, 220-room family hotel, with world class conferencing facilities and was supposed to be the Phase 2 of the development, after the waterpark component which is the subject of the current Council approvals. The graphic also includes a mysterious blacked out section, where in previous information on the development a large oval-shaped wave pool appeared to be earmarked. According to the company’s website, they are in the final stages of negotiations with contractors before the bulk earthworks can start. Sanad Capital were contacted for comment.

The Grigor family from Landsborough and Glass House Mountains IGA stores are excited to unveil their new sponsorship branding on the performance race vehicle of local racer Brock Giblin. Many locals are familiar with Brock’s remarkable recovery following a near fatal crash in 2014, and Felicity and the IGA team are keen to support his return to racing form as evident from his 2017 Queensland State Championship win. Community News Music students to perform at Maleny Show By Sonia Clark
Local instrumental music students will be coming together to perform a special one-hour concert at this year’s Maleny Show. Three bands from the Glasshouse Country area – Beerwah State High School Concert Band, Glass House Coalition Band and the Beerwah State High School Stage Band – will be will be showcasing their skills. Coordinated by local instrumental music teacher Nathan Hill, around sixty school children from Years 5-12 will perform an entertaining selection of musical numbers and audience members should look forward to an eclectic program. “Any performance opportunity is great for the kids and a chance to show the community all the hard work they have put into lessons, rehearsals and practice at home,” Nathan said. “I’m absolutely looking forward to seeing our kids perform.” Along with the Beerwah High School bands which have performed previously for a number of years at the Maleny Show, this year will also feature a ‘Glass House Coalition Band’ – a middle school band made up of advanced primary school instrumental students from Elimbah, Glass House Mountains and Beerwah State Schools as well as younger Beerwah High students. The bands are currently rehearsing weekly in preparation for the Maleny Show performance on Friday June 1 between 10am and 11am.
New dog off-leash park for Landsborough
Responding to community feedback from Landsborough residents, Sunshine Coast Council has begun work on a new dog off-leash area and carpark between the two nature reserves on Caloundra Street. Councillor Rick Baberowski, who has diverted some of his divisional funds towards the project, said that the much needed facility will enhance the general welcome and feel to Landsborough’s Pioneer Park area, utilising a power easement that otherwise would have needed to be kept clear. The new facility will feature a 1.2m high fence with black coated chain wire and secure self-closing access gates along with park shelter and seating. The fur-family friendly area will have shaded seating, a water supply tap with dog bowl, dog bag dispenser and rubbish bin as well as easily accessible concrete access paths. It is envisaged that the park will provide an enjoyable space for dogs of all sizes and their owners. Off street carparking is also included as part of the project plan. There will be a main dog off-leash exercise area as well as a separate fenced area for smaller dogs. Works are scheduled to be completed by mid-July (weather dependent). Donate some history to Bankfoot House To help strengthen the stories of the dairy and outbuildings at Bankfoot House at Glass House Mountains, Sunshine Coast Council’s Cultural Heritage Team are putting a call out for pre-1930s dairy and food preservation objects. They are interested in items such as milk jugs, churns, separators, food storage containers (boxes, tins and hessian bags) and items used to preserve foods. When Glasshouse Country RSL decided back in 2016 to expand their services to include a Dawn Service at 6am at Glass House Mountains as well as the 4.15am service at Landsborough, Club Glass House were keen to offer to host a Gunfire Breakfast following the service for those who attended. Club Glass House Manager Sharon Bowchow said: “When we first talked about organising the breakfast and how to keep the cost down for those attending, straight away my staff said they were happy to volunteer their time and to make contact with our regular suppliers to see what food and beverage items we could have donated.” This year will see Sharon along with Sonya, Ross, Anne and Fiona volunteering on the day. “The support we receive from our suppliers has also been really great, Matilda’s Fruit Barn donate the tomatoes, PFD Food Services donate bacon, our Moo Juice supplier provides juice and Homestyle Bakery provides bread. The club, as well as a couple of local business people, also donate bottles of rum for the traditional rum tottie,” Sharon said. Community Hub to launch in Glass House To celebrate Neighbourhood Centre Week, on Tuesday May 1 from 9.30am-11.30am, the Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre will launch a Community Hub for people to connect in the local area. There will be a free morning tea, 'open house' for people to see and learn more about what the centre has to offer and the launch of the
Community Hub space and new social group. The Community Hub is a new space created at the Neighbourhood Centre with music, books, cuppas and most importantly, people to connect with. The Neighbourhood Centre recognises everyone needs some social connection in their lives and the local community can be a good place to find this with others. This will be the start of a group to meet regularly. Timing and scope of what the group discusses will be guided by those who attend. This year’s Neighbourhood Centre Week is happening from April 30 to May 6 and is a nationwide initiative to celebrate the role of neighbourhood centres in the community. School News Glass House Year 6 ‘Art Ekka’
Contributed by teacher, Jo Weir At the end of Term 1, many members of our local and school community had the opportunity to view some fascinating, stimulating and thought-provoking pieces of art work created by the talented students of Year 6 at Glass House Mountains State School. Following the completion of a Visual Arts unit each student created their own ‘mixed media art sculpture’ which was an expression of their own personal view concerning an environmental or social issue. The students’ intention was to get their viewpoint across to the audience through their sculptures and evoke a sense of concern or provoking thoughts so that each ‘viewer’ might better understand or become increasingly aware of the social or environmental issue being conveyed through each piece. The students were showered with positive and commendable feedback and they hope that some ‘light’ has been shed on issues that are presently affecting our beautiful world in a negative way.

The informative presentation allowed the students to discover more about the local Aboriginal peoples. Students also had an opportunity to try a didgeridoo. At the conclusion of the presentation, all students participated in dancing and singing the Tree Frog song in the Gubbi Gubbi language. You Said It What a disgrace
I could not contain my disgust when I read about the proposed development at Gympie Street North on the very road this town was founded. What a disgrace. We had heard the rumours but hoped they were not true. This cannot go ahead as is, Sunshine Coast Council must protect our most important asset and think of the long term effects of this immoral cash grab. The roundabout is where Landsborough began; bounded by historical buildings and sites of importance with a beautiful house and gardens now to be bulldozed for an eyesore. Every tourist that passes through our town will see this ghetto, what will they think? We already have enough cheaply built unit blocks in this area, forced upon us by greedy out of town developers looking to turn a quick profit who do not live here. The council must protect the character of our pioneering town. The people of Landsborough have long memories and value our community, if this monstrosity goes ahead it will be reflected at the next council elections, it will not be forgotten! Re: New direction for Landsborough development
I note with interest, the outlined design and make-up of the proposed redevelopment site (corner of Maleny Street and Gympie Street North, Landsborough) as published in this newspaper on April 18. I doubt that many would imagine a complex which includes within its plan a communal kitchen, communal lounge areas, communal laundry as well as 10 ‘rooming accommodation’ units (this sounds like barracks style), would fall under the description of your average residential establishment. A total of 96 residents, 63 bedrooms, with only the offer of 32 car spaces – all built on 4,703sq.m – gives the sense that this has an almost institutional ring to it. I recall that Cr Rick received the votes of this household for his stance on retaining and maintaining the character of our small towns, along with measures to respect and protect our peaceful rural/semi-rural lifestyle and even more importantly, what remains of our beautiful natural environment. Interestingly, this article also advised that: “this development is code assessable, meaning that there will be no public notification and requirement for public submissions”. I therefore don’t consider it too presumptuous to ask Cr Rick (as our elected council representative), to share more information with us, to clarify the purpose and ownership of this proposed project. What an eyesore
Where has the beautification for Landsborough gone? What an eyesore for the corner of Gympie Road and Maleny Roads to be developed. All the habitat will be gone, 32 car parks for 96 people, what a laugh. Cars everywhere parked on roads, like it is in Mill Street with both sides of the road heavy with cars: a nightmare to drive down. Perhaps a 20ft high fence around the area with murals of Landsborough’s history would save it. Open your eyes councillors, as developers do not care for communities, only the dollar sign. Re: New direction for Landsborough development
I was interested and most concerned to read the article in Glasshouse Country and Maleny News of 18th April about the proposed development (MCU18/0085) of 37 Maleny Street, Landsborough. Although this development is upon land zoned Medium Density Residential, I find that it beggars belief that there will possibly be at full capacity, up to 96 people living in an area of 4703sq. metres (just over approx 1 acre). This is also not including the 32 cars that will be permitted to be on the site in and out of one driveway. Surely this constitutes over-crowding that is akin to developments in Brisbane, Sydney or other urban areas where living space is at a premium. I, as a Landsborough resident who live approx. 600 metres from this proposal find this to be most unsuitable and inappropriate for the township of Landsborough. I am incredulous that the town planners suggest that there be no room for public consultation, or submissions in protest of this development. After speaking with neighbours and residents within the community, I find that there is a great deal of consternation and opposition to this project. After speaking with Cr Rick Baberowski last Friday at Glass House Neighbourhood Centre, I urge all concerned local Landsborough residents who also are opposed to this development to contact Cr Baberowski on 5420 8967 or Mr John Borthwick Sunshine Coast Council Planning Dept Phone 5475 7526, to at least request community consultation or to register their dismay and opposition to this development proposal. With the loss of millions of species and the poisoning of the planet via chemicals and plastics the world is now at a climax point. An article in the UK Guardian Weekly (30/3/18) ‘A Crisis in The Natural World’ summed the situation by highlighting that runaway resource exploitation threatens to collapse biodiversity and the world's bird, animal and insect population and thus the rest of us humans. In the words of Sir Robert Watson, Chair of the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem: "The time for action was yesterday or the day before.” Our current rate of consumption threatens our planetary viability with large scale plastic production of consumer goods with short use-by dates, and chemical treatments of everything including our food. Over the last ten years we have produced more plastic than during the whole of the last century, with 50% of the plastic we use just once and throw away and we currently only recover 5% of the plastics we produce. Annually approximately 500 billion plastic bags are used worldwide with more than one million bags used every minute. Conservationist Chris Darwin, Charles Darwin's great-great-grandson, says we're living in a car crash moment of natural catastrophes, with climate disasters meeting mass extinctions and human hunger on an unimaginable scale. “The most famous mass extinction was 65 million years ago when the dinosaurs died out. Now we're in the middle of the sixth great mass extinction period on planet Earth. It's huge. And you speak to the average person in the street, and they have no idea this is going on,” he said. It is time for really serious changes, not just in cities, but right here in our beautiful Hinterland, individually we need to take the first step and make changes to our daily actions. Community Groups What a scammer!
During my visit to the Beerwah Marketplace on Tuesday afternoon, on my way back to my car I was approached by a young man who was dressed in a fluro top and work boots who politely asked me if I was from Maleny. I said no and he then asked me if I could spare him a few dollars as he had left his wallet at home. I thought that he was genuine so I gave him $20 and he thanked me. As he walked away I could hear a phone ring in his pocket but continued to go back to my car when another lady approached me and asked if the young man had asked me for money. I said yes, and she told me that he had asked her for money the day before. As we were talking the young man approached us again and the lady confronted him and said, “Why are you asking for money, you said the same story to me yesterday.” She said that she was going to contact the police and he sheepishly left. I told the lady, “Oh well, but I’ll remember his face and not give him anything again.” The next day I reported it to the shopping centre office and they were going to follow it up. On Thursday afternoon I went to the newsagents and the young man was standing there. I was dumbfounded and just stared at him. He then hopped into a car. I hope that he has a clear conscience. Proposed Pioneer Park
I am writing with surprise and exasperation about the proposed small Pioneer Park on the Maleny Precinct, as reported in GC&M News last week. I am grateful that the local clubs are prepared to devote time and resources to commemoration of our history. However, this is a tiny park, comparable I should think to one hole on the golf course; on the hill, beside the road; not chosen because it is ideal for a family park, but a left-over snippet after all the good places are devoted to golf and horses (currently grazing cows). It flabbergasts me that this huge precinct cannot have decent parkland. How have specialist interests squeezed us ordinary residents out to this extent? How many of us want to ride horses and play golf, compared to those of us who want enjoyment of parkland surrounded by nature, places to play with a football or a frisbee, to have a family game of cricket, a picnic or a barbeque, a nature playground and safe bicycle paths for the kids, and park benches for the grandparents? There is an ideal place for all of this, beautifully wrapped around by a loop of the Obi, and with land flat enough for family games. It wouldn't take much to develop it to be comparable to Beerwah's Turner Park. Ten or twenty years ago Maleny residents considered Mary Cairncross Park to be their local park. At weekends it was full of people enjoying family time. Today that park is overwhelmed with visitors from far and wide, and it has insufficient parking. Maleny Park for people
I am pleased to see that the planning for the Maleny Community Precinct has now recognised, at least in a small way, the needs of the community for general recreation areas. Whilst it is still a long way from the community needs expressed in the community consultations of 2007 and 2010 it is a sign of potential progress. In the article about the proposed park in the GC&M News, a mention of the ‘original’ settlers raised my concerns. I believe the area was settled tens of thousands of years before the family mentioned. Perhaps in the language we use we can be conscious of, and compassionate towards, the true heritage of the land on which we now occupy. Looking forward to being able to engage in some general recreational activities on the land we all share. Garry Claridge Maleny

After years of planning and months of building, the final touches are now being put onto the Maleny Guide Hut ready for their re-opening this Saturday, April 28, 53 years since the original hut was opened in 1965. After many grants and many hours of volunteer help and the wonderful work put in by our builder Ed Lawley and his professional team, the State Commissioner of Girl Guides Queensland, Mrs Vehlia Nicholls will open the hut. Many past Guides and Leaders will be attending along with the first President of Maleny Girl Guides Local Association, Mrs Margaret Chillcott, who was President in 1962. Contributed by Ted Prickett At the recent Anglican Ecumenical Men's Breakfast a very attentive group enjoyed a brilliant address from Dennis Young AM, from Drug Arm, regarding the work of Drug Arm throughout Australia, including the Sunshine Coast. Dennis holds a Doctorate in Health Services Management, is a former member of the Queensland Parliament and currently serves as the Secretary of the Former Parliamentary Members Association of Queensland and was a sworn officer in the Queensland Police Service for around 20 years. Dennis is passionate about reducing the harms to individuals and communities associated with the use and abuse of alcohol and other drugs. The group appreciated the effort that Dennis made to share his insights at their meeting, travelling from Ipswich to be at the 7am breakfast and then heading off to Brisbane for another speaking engagement.

Having stayed at Maleny and visited many times over the last 30 years, it is a rare, beautiful and natural part of the world that certainly needs more useable community park space. As a lover of the Maleny Trail with its proximity to town and the meandering Obi Obi Creek, it would seem ideal to have a community park at Platypus Bend. With encroaching bland suburbia of housing estates and golf courses, it would be very sad if Maleny loses its charming natural organic character and doesn't secure usable parkland in this beautiful setting close to town. Out & About Time capsule unveiled
At the Beerburrum State School’s 75th anniversary back in 1993 a time capsule was buried which included sports equipment, as well as other items including worksheets that were common in everyday classrooms at the time, to be opened at the school’s centenary celebrations. The time capsule was organised by Warren Overend, who is the longest serving principal of the school, and the capsule was designed and constructed by Beerburrum local Henry Bryers. Last week a special school parade was held which was 25 years in the making, with Warren joined by Henry to lift out the capsule. Warren explained to the children the importance of birthdays and celebrations, saying that while we all tend to celebrate our own and family and friends’ birthdays yearly, schools, groups and organisations tend to celebrate on a longer time-scale, such as 25, 50 or 100 years. On uncovering the box they were joined by the school’s current principal, Shirley Francis, to delve in to see what had been buried. Sadly, not all of the items had retained their original condition. The task for the current team at the school is to now design a new time capsule and decide what objects will be buried for the next generation to uncover.
Beerburrum State School Centenary By Lea Parkes Beerburrum State School threw open its front gates on Sunday and welcomed the local community, current and former students and staff, and the turnout was absolutely massive! Registration officially kicked off from 9.30am, however visitors started arriving from 8.45am, and continued to come and go throughout the day, making it tricky to put a final figure on the numbers in attendance. However, at any one time there seemed to be hundreds of people milling around with plenty of small groups of people huddling around, holding onto the special book published for the occasion, and pointing out photos of themselves in the class photos. The library, which housed a wonderful display of historical items, was packed and there was definitely no quiet spot to be found! It was clear that the many hours of work by all those on the organising committee, the school’s

Greener choices for a more sustainable future Last week Glass House Early Education Centre welcomed visitors from Sunshine Coast Council who gave a very well-received presentation to children in the school readiness room about the benefits of recycling. Centre coordinator Ange Hardy said that this was now the third year that the Centre had invited representatives from the Council to come in and chat to the children about recycling choices. “We love that we can welcome members of our wider community to come in and share their knowledge with our children – especially when it relates to our commitment to become a more sustainable service,” says Ange. “By welcoming these visitors to our Centre we can further embed our practice and goals of promoting greener choices for a more sustainable future.” The Council representatives talked with the children about recycling choices and gave lots of practical tips about recycling at home, at the Centre and in the greater community.
The presentation was a huge success with the children, and like many of these initiatives, the program was delivered at no additional costs to Centre families. Over the next few months Sunshine Coast Council will return to the Centre to facilitate a worm farm workshop. This follows on from a recent visit by a Sunshine Coast worm farm supplier who instructed the children on the benefits of composting and how to care for worms.
The recycling workshop highlights the importance that Ange and the team place on reusing and recycling, actively promoted a goal (etc) that is embraced by the children and their families. Over the last 18 months a number of exciting initiatives to become ‘greener’ and more sustainable have been developed. Some of these initiatives include the installation of solar panels, a move towards using less plastic toys and products at the centre, the creation of a native edible garden and a monthly ‘green

day’ to help promote environmental awareness and sustainability to name a few. Reusing and recycling unwanted items is also actively promoted with a ‘book swap’ area and recycled clothes swap station where families and staff members are encouraged to bring in unwanted items to be appreciated by others. In other big news for the Centre, long term staff member Silvia Thomas has been nominated in the employee award category of the annual Glass House Small Business Awards (a.k.a.’The Glassies). This is the third year that the awards have been run and Silvia’s nomination is a lovely acknowledgement of the ongoing dedication and commitment that she has shown in her roles at the Centre. A highly qualified early education teacher, Silvia has recently moved into a newly created educational leadership position at the Centre after spending many years as the much loved ‘School Ready room’ teacher. Her new position draws upon her extensive teaching experience and focusses on staff mentorship and educational program development. We interviewed some local businesses about their sustainability practices to show how one business can make a difference. One of the businesses we investigated was 'Hair on Maple' now One Room 2. Did you know that human hair can help save the world? The salon, Hair on Maple, collects the hair from its customers, which is sent on to recyclers where it ends up being stuffed it into hair booms. These giant booms are located all over the world at the ready in case of an oil spill. The way they work is: the hair can soak up oil, just as feathers soak up oil (which often kills the birds), except the hair is saving the environment instead! Hair on Maple is part of an organisation called Sustainable Salons Australia. Currently the owner estimates that this salon is 85% sustainable with their goal being 100%. When they use hair foil they don’t just throw it away, they recycle it into new hair foil. If you love the environment (like us) and you also need a haircut, we highly recommend Hair on Maple. If so you may want to find out more about the first of the Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service (SCHHS) educational sessions to be held in Caloundra on Thursday May 3 from 9am-1pm. Type 2 diabetes can lead to lifelong health complications unless the condition is managed correctly. The group-based workshops will provide educational information for managing diabetes, through a range of topics including self-management practice, communicating with health professionals, nutrition, and emotional and physical wellbeing. SCHHS Healthy Lifestyle Officer Kerry Roach says the workshop is an expansion of information sessions already available on the Coast. The workshop will be held at the Caloundra Community Centre, 58A Queen Street, Caloundra with another workshop planned for August. To be eligible to attend this workshop, you must be diagnosed with type 2 diabetes or prediabetes (confirmed by your GP), be over 18 years of age, be able to attend group education for four hours, and be able to learn in the company of others. A personal Pilates story After a lifelong struggle with pain, Bec Seres has experienced numerous benefits through the ongoing practice and teachings of Pilates. By sharing some of her personal story with others, she hopes that she may also inspire a positive interest in Pilates. Bec is the owner and Pilates Instructor at The Pilates Platform. She became a Pilates Instructor due to her love of teaching, having taught High School Chemistry and Biology for many years, and a strong belief in the restorative and strengthening nature of the method after years of practice. Pilates is a series of exercises designed to work the whole body, including the mind. It is gentle on the joints and can reduce the risk of injury. Bec hopes to continue practicing Pilates well into her golden years, believing it to be the most beneficial support to her lifestyle and she wishes to share this with her community. Bec was a nationally competitive gymnast in her youth and enjoyed playing a variety of sports, however; she suffered numerous injuries due to instability in the ankles and lower back. “As a child I was unaware of the lordosis in my spine and only after training in Pilates did I realise the importance of spinal alignment and core control in managing the pain and preventing injury,” she said.
Fast forward to endometriosis, pelvic pain and three consecutive pregnancies with excessive weight gain and enduring back labors, Bec found the only relief was mat classes and controlled breathing. “The reduction in lower back pain has been one of the greatest benefits of the Pilates Method,” she said. Pilates creates an awareness of body, movement, breath and alignment. Each exercise is specially designed to work a small group of muscles with the support of the deep abdominal muscles. After some practice, the core connection becomes intuitive and your movement more effective. After an accident left her with a cervical disc herniation over 10 years ago Pilates was the only safe mode of strength and flexibility training. Bec can now reflect on the positive impact the Pilates classes had on her disc recovery and she appreciates the importance of supportive movement practices. “Joseph Pilates once said that ‘small muscles need love too’ and while I might not have the body of a gym instructor, I certainly feel very strong inside and confident that I can enjoy physical activities without the risk of injury,” explained Bec. Breathing might seem mindless to most, but learning to breathe effectively has assisted Bec with her pain management and chronic fatigue as well as her instruction and practice during Pilates classes. “Deep, controlled breathing can relax your whole body and allows you to focus on the group of muscles you want to work in isolation. It can help calm you during times of anxiety and can even assist with falling asleep.” Impressed by the physical conditioning, relaxation and mental acuity that Pilates provided postpartum and the prospects of continuing teaching whilst being a stay at home mum, Bec decided to become an Instructor. Training 10 hours of Pilates each week for 14 months was challenging for her post-natal body that was still recovering from prolapse and abdominal separation. “I learned very quickly how to modify the exercises for rehabilitative needs. My own personal journey and experience has shaped the way I teach. I want everyone to be in tune with their body, to be in control of their movement, to know how to breath properly, to relax and have the strength, balance, mobility, and flexibility to enjoy every
moment of their lives.” Bec’s teaching approach is restorative, focused and fun. She ensures a full body work out including the often forgotten extremities; hands and feet. Bec holds weekly classes at Witta and Maleny and encourages people to come along and see how Pilates can help them. World Pilates Day is celebrated each year on the first Saturday in May and The Pilates Platform offers free Pilates activities for the local community. This year there will be free community workshops in Maleny with exercise notes for home use. Bec welcomes everyone of all ages and fitness levels to attend.

It’s not every 14 year old who records their own album, but Beerwah High Year 10 student Kloe Shaw has recently put the finishing touches on her first album, ‘Shallows’. Kloe, who lives in Beerburrum, started guitar lessons with music teacher Paul Fagan only two years ago, and for the past 12 months she has been teaching herself to sing, with help from Vinny Nowell. Paul describes the types of songs that Kloe sings as pop ballads, with the CD being a compilation of nine covers, including songs by Cyndi Lauper, Sarah Braxton, Phil Collins and Cold Chisel, with one original song jointly written by Kloe and Paul, called ‘The Princess’. Paul said Kloe didn’t need to much encouragement to take the step to record an album as she is really courageous and he is keen to see a great turn out for the launch of Kloe’s album at the Beerwah Hotel on Tuesday May 1 between 6pm and 9pm. Kloe will be performing her entire album on the opening night along with a selection of other songs. If you would like to buy one of Kloe’s CDs, autographed copies will be available on the night for $20. The album was recorded locally at Creative Juice Studio at Glass House Mountains.
Sunday drive in the Hinterland?
This Sunday, April 29, the Maleny Masonic Lodge have organised a ‘Car Rally’ with attendees asked to meet at the Maleny Masonic Lodge, 30 Tamarind Street, Maleny at 9am. The Lodge have shared the invitation with the community to join them in what will be a relaxing, fun and social day out, with plenty of country fellowship with $10 registration per car. Before they head off there will be a morning tea of damper/cake and biscuits with billy tea or coffee served for $2.50 per person. Instructions along with a travel guide and questions about the drive will be provided, with cars leaving from 10am and returning to the Maleny Lodge by 11am, for a barbeque lunch. On the menu will be steak and salad for $7.50, sausage on bread $2.50, and you can expect some entertainment, with maybe a song or two, and a poem or two as well. The event has been organised as a fundraiser to help them paint the outside of the Lodge, a project they will be undertaking as funds become available.

Contributed by Bob Banner The Beerwah Lions Club celebrated a busy April with a recent well attended dinner meeting at Club Glass House. During the evening President Charles Farran handed out several awards for perfect attendance, also receiving his own six years recognition of service. This award was presented by Club Secretary Justin Neubecker. Guest speaker for the evening was Lachlan McCullough, an environmental health officer with the Sunshine Coast Council. Lachlan led a highly interesting session on the latest up to date requirements for people handling food at public events such as barbeques. There are strict requirements regarding temperatures for cooked and uncooked food. Veteran Lion Alistair Waddell proposed a vote of thanks to Lachlan before presenting him with a Beerwah Club Banner, a memento from the club for giving his time so willingly. U3A Sunshine Coast - members and visitors are welcome to a session with Deborah Mosely on ‘Compassionate Communication’. Compassionate Communication helps people remain empathetic with each other even in situations fraught with anger. Wild Koala Day
To celebrate Wild Koala Day on Saturday May 5, a special free event will be held at the Caboolture Regional Environmental Education Centre (CREEC) at 150 Rowley Road, Burpengary. Vanda will provide a general koala education and awareness presentation which will be followed by a series of other presentations including ‘becoming a rescuer or transporter of sick, injured and orphaned koalas’ and an overview on the types of injuries and illnesses coming into Australia Zoo’s wildlife hospital and their rehabilitation process. From the churches I ran into an acquaintance the other day – and the first words out his mouth were “you look like you could lose some weight”, even though he knew I had just lost 50 kilos. It got me thinking that when it comes to losing weight no one seems to be satisfied. As someone who has lost a bit of weight I find myself thinking, “just another 500 grams, just another half kilo”, or your friends comment “you should lose a bit more round the edges”. It seems that very often when it comes to losing weight no one is satisfied, and you always feel as if there is something more you should and can do. This is very similar to the way The Bible talks about this thing called the law. The law is Bible shorthand for doing things to try to get in the right with God. When it comes to doing things to get right with God, we think, feel and act as if: “If only I can do this then I will be right with God.” The trouble is, once we do the thing we think we should do, we

On and on it goes: A cycle of wanting to do good and better, of doing good and better and of knowing deep down that we still aren’t making the grade despite our best efforts. The Bible is very realistic in its message. God knows we will never be good enough. No matter how hard we try we are doomed to fail – simply because we are never going to be good enough for God. But Jesus lived the perfect life. Everything he did always pleased God. When Jesus died something happened. Jesus took our life and our inability to please God and he swapped it for his perfect life which always pleased God. The result is that now when God sees us he doesn’t see us with all our faults, rather he sees Jesus’ perfect life. If we tried to please God by ourselves – it's just like going on a diet – it won’t work. You will never gain enough brownie points. But if we accept Jesus’ offer, God will accept us and treat us as his friends. It really is an offer too good to be true. And it sure beats dieting.

One of the enjoyable things about having a garden is that, even if most of it is a train wreck, it only takes one special spot to give you that ‘ahhhhhh’ moment. That moment where you’re happy just to be there and it gives you the greatest sense of fulfilment to know that you created that one spot. It might be a place where you can sit and contemplate, it might be a garden bed which is productive and feeds the family, or it might be – like mine – a view line which I just love. Mine is a simple granite fencepost I picked up years ago which I’ve placed at the end of a vine covered arbour. You see it from the back of the house and as you walk through the backyard. It just draws your eye down through the arbour to what lies beyond. I’ve found that one great benefit from visiting the open gardens during the Maleny Garden Club’s annual ‘Gardening on the Edge’ weekend (this coming June 9 and 10) is that you get to see lots of these special places where you can draw ideas for your own backyard. Sweet treats from the bush Many Australian flowering plants produce large, bright red or orange flowers with tubular structures containing copious amounts of dilute sweet nectar. These are bird-pollinated (or ornithophilous) plants, and include eucalypts, paperbarks, banksias, grevilleas, bottlebrushes and hakeas. Birds have a high visual acuity, seeing colours in the red and orange spectrums most clearly, whereas they have a poor sense of smell, hence ornithophilous plants rarely have strong scents. Australia’s eucalypts and paperbarks are the only bird-pollinated trees on the planet to form vast forests. Nectar birds dominate these ecosystems, particularly wattlebirds, honeyeaters and lorikeets. Unlike fruit, seeds and insects, which, once eaten, are gone, the same flower may be visited ten to twenty times a day and may produce nectar for up to 20 days. Such copious sources of nectar are a resource well worth guarding, hence many Australian nectar birds are large with feisty aggressive natures and loud raucous calls. Long beaks and brushy tongues have also evolved to assist in nectar capture. Nectar is not the only sweet treat produced by the Aussie bush. Manna is a sugary substance that exudes from damaged plant material, and later crystallizes. Manna and honeydew, the sugary secretions of nymphal stages of aphids, coccids and psyllids, are prized food sources for many birds, including honeyeaters. Another favourite food resource is lerp, an exudate from psyllid insects, which produce this white substance to protect their larvae. • Grass growth will be starting to slow down now but weeds still grow. Chainsaw safety with Maleny Mowers Chris and Marcia Smith from Maleny Mowers know how important it is to stay safe when working with power equipment. Here are their tips for working with chainsaws.
• Keep the air filter clean. • Use only fresh fuel. • Double check your fuel ratio. • Never try and drop start your saw as this is very dangerous. • To safely start a chainsaw always place the saw on the ground and place one foot on the handle to start. • When starting your saw, put the choke on, prime approximately 4-5 times and pull until it fires. Turn the choke off and then continue to pull until it starts. This will avoid flooding the saw. • Make sure that the saw is oiling the chain. A good way of checking to see if the saw is oiling the chain is to place a piece of cardboard or newspaper under the saw and hold the saw above it. If there is a fine spray of oil on the cardboard or newspaper, then the saw is oiling the chain. • Service your saw on a regular basis, always by a qualified technician. Servicing your saw on a regular basis will maximise the performance of your chainsaw. If you are inexperienced in the use of a chainsaw, always seek some professional advice before you attempt to use your saw. Chainsaws are a dangerous tool if not operated or used safely or correctly.
Safety tips • Always wear protective safety gear such as eye protection, ear muffs and protective clothing. • Be aware of your surroundings. Be mindful of children, other people and pets around you. Ensure that they are at a safe distance from you when using the saw. • Do not use your chainsaw in a confined space. • Ensure the chain brake is working and do not use if it is damaged. • Do not use the tip of the saw to cut. • We highly recommend doing a course in the safe use of a chainsaw. • Most importantly, know your limits. Safe use / tips • Always keep the chain sharp. If when cutting, the saw is making sawdust, the chain is generally blunt. A good indication of a sharp chain is that it will make large chips as it is cutting. It is always a good idea to have a spare, fully sharpened chain on standby so that you can continue on with the job that you are doing.

Sport Celebrating two aces in a week
Maleny Golf Club is celebrating not just one holein-one, but two historic aces on the same hole within a week of each other during competition rounds. The rare pair of deuces on the 9-hole Graham Papworth-designed course comes just as the club prepares to expand the layout by bringing three new holes into play – two Par 4s and a Par 3. Geoff Smith struck a majestic shot on the Par 3 third hole from 150 metres out with a 6-iron on Saturday morning, April 14, from the front tee and watched in awe as the ball kicked toward the pin and went in. Alas, his celebrity status was short lived! Members hardly had a chance to hear about his good fortune when Chris Pottinger took on the same hole the following Saturday with a driver from the middle tee, 175 metres out, and aced it as well. Club President Max Whitten said members were astonished and delighted to be celebrating two more historic hole-in-ones in such quick succession – reminiscent of events in 2016 when the club celebrated two aces within 8 days.

Witta Tennis Contributed by Pauline Fraley Once again the weather was a factor in the Wednesday competition with the Wagtails being washed out again. Whistlers played at Maroochydore, against Meteors. We were happy that the sun was out and we were on the court. It was a very hard match, and that made for great rallies and lots of running. It started to rain just before we finished the last set, so it was perfect timing. Score was 19-43 games, 2-6 sets. Team was Brenda Warner, Maree Hooley, Donna Kuskopf and Aki Lepper. The Wildcats were home to Nambas Champers, again the weather wasn’t cooperating. Pauline, Stacey, Libby and Jenie only managed to complete 4 sets, and were playing the 5th set when the rain, thunder and lightning had us running for cover. So, it was another wash out, but at least we got some tennis in. Social tennis is played on Monday from 8am and Saturday from 1pm all welcome. We’re still a young golf club so historic feats like these are particularly memorable,” he said. The odds of an amateur golfer achieving a holein-one are estimated to be around 12,500 to 1, let alone two on the same hole within a week. Geoff’s ace was the first ever scored by a male player on the Par 3 third hole during a competition round while Chris’s was the first from the Men’s White Tee during a competition round. “I just heard a tink from the tee,” recalled Geoff, a 66-year-old teacher who only returned to the game a couple of years ago and had never scored an ace before. “We knew the ball had hit the pin, but could not see if it went in, so I wasn’t really certain until I got to the green and retrieved the ball from the cup. It’s every golfer’s dream isn’t it?” Chris, a 70-year-old retiree, said he too was thrilled. “I used my driver and got a kindly member’s kick off the front left bank which really helped and we all saw it go in,” he said. Traditionally, golfers who score a hole in one shout the bar. While Geoff got off rather lightly there was quite a contingent on hand when Chris, a teetotaller, announced his good fortune to a field of almost 40 participants who’d just completed their rounds off a Shotgun Start.

Men's and medley results Contributed by Roger Bonhomme Last Wednesday's Totalspan Sheds sponsored Blue Marker Challenge was cancelled yet again because of heavy rain and dangerous storm conditions. Despite the dreadful weather, a few competitors did actually manage to finish the competition. However, as the heavy rain continued, some greens flooded and when lightning flashed the ‘abandon’ siren wailed out and we splashed back to the club house. By Saturday conditions had improved a little and the Club held a mixed and non-mixed two ball Stableford event. The weather was even-handed with a heavy shower in the morning and a heavier one in the afternoon. Preferred lie was in force, helping players a little in the heavy going. In the non-mixed, Trent Yeates / Brade Teske took out top honours with 47 points, winning by one from three pairs: Tony Mraz / Doug Johnston, Simon Reeves / Geoff Broadstock and Paul Handley / Mark O'Brien. Tony and Doug won the countback. NTP: 2 – Nev Rowley, 5 – Geoff Clarke, 16 – Sean Daines, and 18 – Derek Pettigrew. The mixed competition threw up a strange result – Bernie Stone (partnered by Del Machen) won with 46 points while his wife Cathy finished second partnered with Peter Hewlett. On the second hole, the card was incorrectly filled out, while none of the 16 mixed players bothered the scorer on 16.

Thursday April 19: Social, not even a bit of rain could stop us from playing today. Winners of the day were Kerry Molloy and Simon Richter with a highest winning margin of + 20 on their first game. Runners-up with the smallest winning margin were Don Tierney and Jimmy Tatum with + 1. Lucky draw went to Jack Timm and Lindsay Henderson. Saturday April 21: Men’s Club Championship Fours, Round 1. The Range Croquet Club Contributed by Ken Barker On Saturday, after a shortened practice session we had our monthly meeting. Ted and Lorraine Singleton visited on Sunday. The weather was beautiful. Games progressed well. Tea was taken at three. Garth Cottrell and Sally Adams played a respectable draw at 5 all. Frances Harper 13 beat Kath Smith 7. Nick Cram and Ted 17 defeated Vince Carbery and Ken Barker 13. The ladder competition is underway. On Monday, with what may prove to be ephemeral promises of prizes at the end of the year, the very first game was played. This was between Priscilla Vickers and Frances. Here is an abridged account of the game by the winner. Frances got a handy little break of three early in the game then risked a couple of leaves thinking that Priscilla wouldn't make a roquet. Unfortunately for her, roquets were Priscilla's strong point. When the bell went the score was 7-4 to Frances. Frances played her last turn, missing an easy roquet and leaving both her balls at Priscilla's hoop. Could Priscilla make a break of 3 to draw or 4 to win? She made the first hoop with ease. A second hoop looked quite feasible, but it was all or nothing, so she had to set up a third hoop. She made the necessary split shot, but the setup was not ideal. She missed. Frances breathed a sigh of relief! Final score 7-5 to Frances. This means that Frances stays at 10 and Priscilla at 11 on the ladder. Well done both players. Wet weather meant no play on Thursday. Club play days are Thursday and Sunday at 1 for 1.30pm. Saturday mornings at 8am there are lessons for beginners on the courts in the showgrounds. Beerwah Golf Club Ladies results Contributed by Brenda Briese As I write this there is a storm rumbling around, adding to our copious amounts of rain. I think that in last week’s column I may have jumped the gun with my predictions of fine weather. All we can do is hope that soon the sun decides to stay a while. On Saturday April 14 we played a Stableford with 21 starters, but only 17 finished. (Yes we got wet AGAIN!) The winner was Fay Barry with a fine 41 pts (she played in the am before the rain), runner up was Sue Williamson on 36 pts. A good score in the wet. NTPs: 2 - Sue Williamson, 5 - Jo Malone, 16 - Lesley Eggleston, (2nd shot) 18 - Joey Eccles. BRD went to 29 pts. Thursday April 19 was again a Stableford, but with the added interest (fun!) of only using three clubs and a putter. Sometimes I wonder whether we need so many clubs as the scores were good, given the wet conditions. Many ladies cancelled with more rain forecast, so it was a very small field of 17 players. Fortunately we only had a couple of splashy showers. Winner was Karen Gannon (she's on a hot streak!) with 30 pts OCB from runner up Cathy Stone. NTPs: 5 and 16 Sue Williamson, (2nd shot) 18 - Mavis Brimelow. BRD went to 28 pts.
