Cover Story National titles - local success San Training Centre recently sent a team of seven competitors to Bendigo, Victoria to compete in the 2018 Taekwondo National Championships. The team had exceptional results bringing home three national titles. The big day for the centre’s coloured belts was Saturday, September 22, when Sonia Wearing and Conner Adam competed in the 8-9 years red belt division, along with Siena Cameron and Charlie Bidgood in the 12-14 years red belt cadet division. Sonia fought well in her second ever interstate competition, unfortunately losing her first fight but coming away with a bronze medal. Conner displayed exceptional skill, dominating his opponent to win by a 20 point gap, coming away with gold and becoming the centre’s first national champion for 2018. Charlie won his first match 21-9, but came up against a skilled and stronger opponent in the semifinal, coming away with a bronze. Siena won her first match 20-10 and progressed on to the final. She then showed remarkable perseverance and fighting spirit to be declared the winner at the end of the second round as a result of the opponent accruing too many gamjeoms (penalties). After relaxing and savouring her win, she was unexpectedly called back to resume the last round as the opponent had protested regarding the number of gamjeoms and a review declared there had been a computer error. After refocusing, Siena returned to fight extraordinarily hard and pulled out a 44-43 win, becoming the centre’s second national champion 2018. On Sunday, September 23, Emma Hall in the 10-11 years black belt youth division had a strong fight but

The San Training Centre national team - Kasia, Siena, Emma, Sonia, Conner, Charlie and Cameron a few refereeing calls did not go her way and she lost her first match by two points. Kasia Bartnikowska was up next in the black belt seniors female under 67kg division. Her second seeding was favourable securing a start in the semi-finals. She fought an intense fight losing her match in the last 15 seconds 21-24 to come away with bronze medal. Cameron Taylor was our last fighter of the day in the black belt seniors male under 80kg division, also starting in a favourable position as second seed. He dominated his first match 50-30 and moved to the final. He fought well and was leading 3-2 after the first round when his opponent suffered a knee injury and was forced to withdraw, making Cam the winner and national champion. Lake Baroon group catches national award The Lake Baroon Catchment Care Group (LBCCG) has won a prestigious award at the recent National Landcare Conference in Brisbane. The local community environment group delivers effective, large scale, best practice, on-ground projects designed to reduce the risks to water quality in the catchment and ultimately Lake Baroon. After winning the Queensland Landcare award, the group went up against other state winners for the 2018 National Landcare Award in the category of ‘Excellence in Sustainable Farm Practices’ … and were judged the best in Australia. Founded in 1991, the group today works with many participating in its agricultural, landslide, weed control and dairy programs. These four programs have improved productivity for landowners while delivering broader environmental benefits across the catchment.

According to the group’s award submission, historical scepticism of environmental groups by farmers was just one obstacle faced by the LBCCG in instituting these programs. The group won landowner trust by building individual relationships, and by cultivating mutually beneficial relationships with stakeholders such as Seqwater and Sunshine Coast Council. LBCCG president Peter Stevens said the ongoing work was supported by Seqwater with the aid of long-term funding. “We thank Seqwater, as well as the Sunshine Coast Council, for their many years of continued support so that we can clean up our waterways.”

They add to the productivity and beauty of the farm,” Keith said. “The best thing is we have worked with the staff for many years and we have trust in them to do what is best for everyone - for us and the lake. I think the work they do is absolutely fantastic.”

Train pain in Mooloolah Mooloolah township came to a standstill a fortnight ago when a freight train broke down and blocked the level crossing. From about 1pm until 10pm, the town was effectively cut in half, with all traffic having to divert through the underpass via Neill/Eudlo roads. Otherwise locals could walk over the pedestrian overpass, so the inconvenience for some wasn’t too severe. For others these options weren’t suitable, highlighting serious accessibility problems due to the current lack of an alternative crossing or a lift at the station. Local resident Alan O’Callaghan, who is also well known as the president of the Mooloolah Valley Community Association, contacted the GC&M News with his story. “I happen to use a motorised wheelchair and live 300 metres across the train crossing from the shops,” said Alan, who was at the shops when the train broke down. “The only access during this episode was a footbridge or a ten kilometre detour via Old Gympie and Connection roads. “In the four hours I was stranded, I saw a large truck unable to take the detour under Eudlo Road rail bridge due to a high load. People parked in Jones Street were unable to exit their car park spaces due to the volume of traffic backed up in surrounding streets.
“At no time while I was stranded was there a representative of Queensland Rail (QR) in attendance to assist the divided community. “At 2pm a friend rang QR and was put through to what seemed to be an overseas call centre. A second call raised QR in Brisbane, but upon being told of my predicament and my need for a maxitaxi the person on the other end of the phone laughed, then within a few minutes of waiting to get an answer the call disconnected. A taxi never did arrive. “After four hours of waiting for QR to send a customer service representative to liaise with the community, I was assisted into the front seat of a ute and my 150kg wheelchair was lifted into the rear by concerned community members who drove me home.” According to Alan, Mooloolah is the only hinterland railway town without an alternative way of crossing the line within the town precincts. “It’s obvious QR couldn’t care less about our residents,” he said. “Mooloolah Valley was left to fend for itself and, apparently, is not entitled to be advised or assisted by an uncaring bureaucracy. “It has again become apparent that in times of emergencies when the rail crossing is blocked, we are at a severe disadvantage, and in times of bushfire the results could be catastrophic. “Please consider reopening the tunnel in Jones Street as an emergency exit for those living on

the northern side of the town in times of severe emergencies.” More recent Mooloolah residents may not know that there was an underpass off the end of Jones Street that people could use in times of need, but this was closed a number of years ago. Luckily the train breakdown didn’t coincide with a large rain event. If the Neil Road bridge had been under flood conditions, the only way in or out of town would have been Brandenburg Road.

Another successful Blackall 100 By Lea Parkes In November, 2014 local business Run Queensland organised the first Blackall 100 event, which saw 179 runners compete in either a 100km or 50km run starting and finishing at Mapleton and running through the National Parks of the Hinterland Great Walk. The trail run has since established itself as an annual event held on the second last weekend in October, and each year the number of competitors has continued to grow and for the first time this year the event was sold out and had a crowd of 480 runners competing. Run Queensland’s spokesperson, and Glass House Mountains local Brett Standring said the race has steadily grown and has been recognised for its toughness and technical trail. “We are really pleased with how the event has grown and received not only by the local runner community, but by interstate and now international runners,” Brett said. This year, the fifth time the event has been held saw a number of new elements including a special ‘Kippa’s category, which is a 22km youth event. Run Queensland member and Brett’s wife Megan Standring explained that she was keen to create an opportunity for local youth to participate in the event and give these young people a chance to really challenge themselves and prove that they could develop the skills required and finish the race. “Kippa is an indigenous term for young people who are transitioning to adulthood, so we thought it was a fitting title for the team,” she said.

Landsborough housing supply to get a boost

Two applications to expand the housing market in Landsborough were received by Sunshine Coast Council last week. Sixteen residential lots, all over 600 sq m, and two drainage reserves totalling almost 2,400 sq m are planned on two sites at 7 William and 26 Bella streets in Landsborough. With the land zoned as low density residential, the two developments fit within council’s vision for the managed growth of Landsborough. According to the planning report submitted to council, the proposals meet a shortage of building blocks in Landsborough “… with all recent estates sold out immediately upon completion”. “The lack of supply with steady demand has fuelled a significant increase in price to the detriment of the community. There is an urgent need to provide affordable serviced urban land in this area,” the report said. Susan Maynard from Connect Tourism says “a tweet on Twitter will give you approximately 2-3 hours exposure; a post on Facebook will give you approximately seven hours; and on Instagram maybe five days. This month Susan made a presentation to our breakfast meeting on the importance of social media to business. The room was packed and the information relevant. Great to see so many taking notes on how to get the most out of social media. It is an important topic and the turn up for the breakfast proved there is great interest in the subject and we will work on providing more comprehensive conversations around the topic in the future. Our last breakfast for the year will be on Tuesday, November 13 at 7am at Maleny Neighbourhood Centre (MNC) with Nooreen Harris as guest speaker. MNC is a welcoming multifunctional community space in the heart of Maleny that provides opportunities for community connection and wellbeing for young people, families and the broader community.

Tips for racing fashion
With the “race that stops the nation” just around the corner we thought we’d catch up with our own lovely Landsborough fashionista Krystle Kirk about her tips for race day outfit planning. The stylish mum of two has spent years following the fashions on the field at the major racing carnivals and has also won accolades for her own chic outfits and ensembles. Q: Do you start with the dress or the hat? I often get asked about planning an outfit if it is easier to start with the dress or the hat. Personally, I prefer to start with the fabric or dress and then have a hat custom made to complement the outfit perfectly. I find this differs for a lot of people and I suppose it comes down to how creative your mind is, how well you can visualise an outfit and what access you have to textiles and fabrics. The four outfits that I have in planning at the moment have all started with the dress. Q: Do you recommend investing in millinery? Investing in quality, well-made millinery is the key to bringing an outfit together. Quality millinery should be lightweight, comfortable and easy to wear. There are so many amazing milliners around and there are some wonderful local talents right here on the Sunshine Coast. Q: What are your tips for planning the perfect outfit? Know your body shape. Wear what suits you and what you feel comfortable in - if it doesn't fit right, have it altered. You can't go wrong with classic feminine styles - hemlines should be knee length or longer and exposed skin kept to a minimum. Attending the races is about elegance and class. Basically, if you would wear it to a nightclub it’s not suitable for the track. Don't be afraid to push traditional boundaries. We are seeing a lot of ladies entering fashions on the field this spring carnival in pant suits, which I think is fabulous. I'm actually planning a culottes jumpsuit for Melbourne Cup this year, which I am very excited about. Make sure your shoes are comfortable. You should not take your shoes off at the track. If you know you won't last the whole day in heels, pack a pair of flats to change into. Accessorise! Put thought into all the finer details of your outfit - a pair of statement earrings or a chunky necklace can take an outfit from a two to a ten, but don't overdo it. Sometimes if an outfit is particularly bold or bright, simple accessories are best. Pay attention to trends but all-in-all stick to styles, colours and designs that are uniquely you and that you feel comfortable and beautiful wearing. And finally, if you can't find it don't be afraid to DIY. In the past I have painted shoes, bags and jewellery. I am currently painting wooden beads to make a necklace because I couldn't find anything in the right shade of orange. Q: What are your fashion picks for spring? I’ve noted a number of trends including anything in the colours yellow and lilac. Also, as a point of interest, consider uncommon colour pairings such as light blue and red, pink and red, red and orange, and even teal and lilac. Big brimmed hats are back as are boaters and classic Dior mushroom shaped hats, as well as asymmetric hemlines and ruffle sleeves and big bows. Q: Final bit of fashion advice? The most important piece of advice is to not take yourself too seriously - get dressed up, go out have fun, feel amazing and have a wonderful day. It was a happy occasion on Sunday, October 14 when past students of Maleny High School met to celebrate 50 years since they started high school. The catch-up was held at the Maleny Pioneer Village and a highlight was that it was the first occasion that Glenferna, the most recently restored building in the village, was open to visitors. Ed Lawley was the Glenferna project manager so it was with pride that Ed showed off his restoration work to his former classmates. The priest-in-charge of St George’s Anglican Church, Maleny, The Reverend Jeanette Jamieson, recently celebrated St Francis of Assisi’s festival day in the traditional way with a blessing of animals at the morning service. People turned up with their dogs that were quiet and well behaved, with the exception of one feisty young Shmoodle. He wanted to be part of everything and started a rival tune to the hearty singing of ‘All creatures great and small’. While it was not as spectacular as we saw on TV when that other ‘Vicar’ Geraldine, played by Dawn French, created national news with her service for the animals, it was nevertheless an experience that was intended to celebrate that love is the only language animals share with us. The priest reminded her congregation that Gandhi had said “the measure of a society was how they treat their animals”. This was exemplified by one member, Carol, who looks after aged and sick animals in a type of hospice until they die, surrounded by love. She brought five of her patients to the service. As the Maleny vicar said: “Let us bless those companion animals who bless us by giving us unconditional love”, and make sure all animals are treated humanely, in what Nobel Prize winner Albert Schweitzer called a “reverence for life”.

Teachers, students and special guests were entertained by an array of talent, including performances by our award-winning stage band and dance company, and a beautiful harmonic performance by Beerwah High’s vocal group. Congratulations to Team Tunbubudla, the first house that has managed to win the cup back-toback - a huge accomplishment. Special congratulations this year to our concert band who won gold for an outstanding performance at the Victorian Schools Music Festival, a second at the Sunshine Coast Junior Eisteddfod and bronze at the Sunshine Coast Fanfare. Dance Company once again had an amazing year, taking out two first and three second placings at the Australian Dance Pinnacle Challenge, one

Compassionate Housing Affordability Scheme Maleny, better known as CHASM Housing, has developed the Small House Project in Maleny in partnership with the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre. The volunteer-based community group has secured the Maple Street community garden as the site for the first of ten affordable small homes intended for Maleny and surrounds. They are currently fundraising for the $50,000 needed, with $6,500 raised so far. A number of great fundraising initiatives are under way including the Melbourne Cup at the Orangery at Maleny, Drag Queen Bingo and the huge raffle that is part of the Chamber of Commerce’s Maleny Christmas Street Party and Festival. If you don’t already have plans for the Melbourne Cup there is still time to get tickets and proceeds from the raffle and the sweeps on the day will go to CHASM. Drag Queen Bingo event organiser Nicole Hilton says the CHASM Housing’s fundraising team are really pleased to have secured Melony Brests to come to the Maleny Showground Hall on
November 30 for the event. “The hilarious theatrical act is promoted as a ‘ball-dropping good time’, and we’re lucky to get this booking for Maleny at this time of year, being great timing to coincide with the Christmas party,” Nicole said. Julia Peddie, co-founder of CHASM Housing, said the lack of affordable housing in Maleny had forced many valued long-term residents to relocate. “Many people have to drive from other areas to work, volunteer or keep their kids in school. Moving away from their community connections often leaves them feeling isolated and unsupported. “We hope our project will demonstrate how low-cost housing can be delivered and encourage land-owners to build secondary dwellings to rent,” she said. Do the Maleny Monster Mash
Time to get spooky as Maleny State High School P&C hosts its inaugural Maleny Monster Mash on Saturday, October 27, from 6-10pm. Billed as the spookiest event to on the hinterland, this family friendly fancy dress extravaganza promises to be a frightfully good time for all. As the major school fundraiser for the year, the community is encouraged to get behind the event and come along to the costume ball dressed in their best monster mash outfit. The night will feature costume contests, raffles and door prizes, live entertainment by Chris Ramsay and the Febs, games for the kids and even a haunted house for teenagers and adults to walk through. There will be ‘spooktacular’ food and drinks to purchase, with the first 100 people through the door receiving a free show bag. Tickets are just $5 and available at the door, with all proceeds going towards buying new curtains for the school hall.
This fun filled evening aims to bring the community together while celebrating the achievements of the talented Maleny State High School students who have been working very hard to bring their creation to life by putting on an event not to be missed. what’s New... Beerwah Library’s newest ‘winged’ member
A Black Glossy Cockatoo has made Beerwah Library its home recently, in the form of a large-scale mural on the library’s external wall. The Black Glossy Cockatoo offers a great link with the other colourful mural created inside the building, by the same artist, Mieke van den Berg. It is part of the Beerwah Library refurbishment completed earlier this year. Mieke said it was important the mural told a story that tied into the natural environment surrounding Beerwah Library.
Generous donation
Beerwah State School recently accepted the very generous donation of a substantial number of books from the Zonta Club of Caloundra City. The club became aware of support programs the school had implemented to help students continue to develop the joy of reading. The donated books have been written by female writers and Sunshine Coast writers. The students appreciate having these new additions to the school’s library. Popular orchestral classics The Sunshine Coast Symphony Orchestra is presenting popular orchestral classics that will take you to other worlds in an entertaining afternoon on Sunday October 28 from 2pm at the Maleny Community Centre.

The program includes some watery favourites – the storm-tossed romantic abandon of Mendelssohn’s ‘Hebrides Overture’ and the more restrained ‘Water Music’ of Handel, written to entertain his employer, King George I at a royal celebration on the River Thames. Reminiscent of a more modern America, the second half of the program includes the brashness of Gershwin’s ‘Strike Up The Band’, Bernstein’s modern take on ‘Romeo and Juliet’ with his ‘West-Side Story Suite’, and Aaron Copland’s inimitable knees-up ‘Hoe-down’ from his ‘Rodeo’ ballet suite. Enrolments filling fast for 2019 kindy program Time seems to be flying by and while there is still a lot of fun and learning adventures to be had for this year, the team at Glasshouse Mountains Early Education Centre are already busy planning for 2019. Centre coordinator Dee McCaan says that enrolments are filling fast for 2019, especially for the centre’s popular kindy program. Earlier this year, the centre unveiled its innovative ‘bush kindy’ program to offer a unique immersion experience for children in the ‘school readiness’ room. Every Tuesday and Thursday the children proudly wear their kindy colours and gather together to have a safety discussion before heading outdoors. Guided by early childhood teacher Emma Coultis, the children then embark on a collective learning journey that provides countless benefits. Dee says the opportunities from the bush kindy experiencer are endless, with predicting results and taking in the natural wonder of sounds, smells and their local surroundings. “Taking our kindy class experience outdoors opens up the opportunities to scaffold our learning and embrace outcomes found in the Queensland Kindergarten Guidelines in preparing an understanding of the community they live in,” Dee says. A kindergarten child who is engaged with ageappropriate learning opportunities is more likely to have a strong sense of wellbeing and connectedness. A good kindergarten program can underpin a child’s confidence to be an involved learner and assist in developing a range of skills and processes such as problem solving, enquiry, experimentation, hypothesizing, researching

and investigating. This is evident when children manipulate objects and experiment with cause and effect, trial and error, and motion. At the centre, this type of learning is actively encouraged and appropriate levels of challenge are set when planning learning environments. With bush kindy the children are encouraged to extend themselves and develop age-appropriate responsibility by taking safe risks to promote selfregulation. The program also serves to promote a deeper bonding relationship between the educators and children as they form teams and experience the wonder of the natural world together. “We find that an engaged child is more likely to explore ways to show care and concern and interact positively with others,” Dee says. “Our teachers and educators also actively lead by example and promote ways to relate positively with others, be a companion and behave in a friendly way.” At Glasshouse Mountains Early Education Centre, encouraging and developing effective communication skills is another core objective underpinning the kindy program as educators
prepare the children to be school ready. “We believe that our kindergarten children should be encouraged to be effective communicators and explore and expand ways to use language. We ensure that each child has age-appropriate speech patterns, vocabulary and sentence structures, and our teachers promote skills for taking turns to talk and listen and engage in conversations,” Dee says. As part of their strong focus on healthy eating, the centre is about to start a lunchbox program designed to assist children in transitioning to school. This program will involve visits from a dietician with Queensland Childcare Services to engage in an interactive program about foods to eat for school, when, how much and making healthy choices. Each child participating will receive a free lunchbox. Glasshouse Mountains Early Education Centre has a quality driven kindergarten program. Contributed by Charles Russell Each month, members of the Landsborough Seventh-day Adventist Church purchase flowers and put together floral arrangements that are personally delivered to various nursing homes and aged care facilities in the local area. “Flowers are a great way to tell the elderly and shut-ins that they are loved and that they are a very special part of the community,” says Jess Mudri, the coordinator of the activity. Beerwah Lions
Contributed by Bob Banner The Beerwah Lions have been collecting cans for recycling for the past 30 years, and in October we collected 165 kg of empty cans that were sent off for recycling. However, under the new container recycling system Lions will no longer be official can collectors. In effect this means Lions can no longer pay for the cans they collect. We will still be at our collection point beside the Shell Service Station at Beerwah on the first Saturday of every month, but can now only receive cans as a donation to the club. We also can only accept cans that are intact, not crushed. The monthly dinner meeting was held at Club Glass House, with president Charles Farran in the chair. Lions Max Pinwill and Alistair Waddell gave a comprehensive report on the recent district convention they attended at Roma. The club was also delighted to welcome two special visitors for the evening - Jan and John Bolton are former club members now travelling around Australia who took the opportunity to call in and renew past friendships. Several members joined the Bankfoot House 150 year celebration on October 14 by holding a sausage sizzle. In spite of the rain it was a well attended and interesting day. We should all applaud the efforts of the Bankfoot House volunteers who keep this important piece of history so well preserved.

Our next outing will be on Tuesday, November 6 for the Melbourne Cup. Some members will be meeting at a member’s home for fun, raffles, sweeps and a buffet lunch while others will meet at Club Glass House. Contributed by Ann Husband Morris House provides a range of services to the community including emergency relief, a Justice of the Peace service each Wednesday, free bread (thanks to Parklands Bakery), free internet and computer use, printing and photocopying services, as well as a legal service and referral help. Tax help is coming to an end on October 31. If you want to use this free service, you will need to book an appointment as soon as possible by calling 5494 1255. We are in the process of installing new computers and we have also recently connected to the NBN, so we have much faster internet for those who use them. A kind person has donated some toys to give away, so if you have children who could benefit, call in and see us. We also have some clothes and blankets to give away. Thanks to Anglican Food Bank and Landsborough Seventh-day Adventist Church for their continued support through donations of food and other essential items for our clients in need. Without the generous people who donate these items we would not be able to help as many clients as we currently do. If you are interested in volunteering, we are always looking for people who are willing to donate some time – a morning or afternoon per week or whatever time you can spare. Call in, phone or email us for details. We are registered with Centrelink for those who are eligible for volunteering. Contributed by Gail Denver There’s nothing the Friends of Pattemore House like better than welcoming visitors to Fairview (Pattemore House). This especially applies to the families who once lived and worked at the elegant farmhouse, which was constructed entirely from pit sawn white beech by the Pattemore family in 1907. When old JR Pattemore died in 1948, the family sold the farm. The next owner, John Austin Robert Thompson, bought Fairview in 1949, owning it until 1962. At first Austin Thompson, a brother of JAR Thompson, worked the farm, living in the share-farmer’s cottage – Mosman - next to the Pattemore dairy bales. Harley with his mum Marion In 1954, Ralph and Marion Peers and Peers on their recent visit their three small children (John, Lenore and Harley) came to live at Fairview and worked the dairy farm for three years. Follwing the Peers, Horace and Jean Howard came to live at Fairview as share farmers for JAR Thompson, until Terry Hunt purchased the property in 1962. Marion Peers and her son Harley recently dropped in to see their old home, sharing their photographs and stories with the Friends – naturally over some delicious morning tea. The Friends open the house and garden to the public on the last Saturday of each month, and invite visitors to enjoy the garden, tour the interior displays, hear the stories and view slide shows and picture galleries of the history of the families of Fairview. Afternoon teas on the spacious verandas are a favourite, and the Friends also encourage you to walk the Poetry and Sculpture Trail over to the Pattemore’s old dairy bales. They are open this Saturday from Ralph Peers and 1–4pm at 15 Porters the children Lane, North Maleny.

The fifth annual Local Artists - Local Content Art Prize exhibition opened at Caloundra Regional Gallery last week, with artist Jan Strudwick announced as the winner of the $5,000 Best of Show prize for her mixed-media work ‘Standoff at Maleny’. Jan transforms old clothes and fabric into panoramic landscapes, depicting various landmarks from her travels across Australia. Presented by the Friends Regional Gallery Caloundra Inc in partnership with the Caloundra Regional Gallery, the art prize offers prizes totalling $13,500 across six categories. Arts portfolio councillor Rick Baberowski said the Local Artists - Local Content Art Prize exhibition was a highlight of the gallery’s exhibition calendar and the Sunshine Coast arts calendar. “Every year I look forward to this exhibition with great anticipation,” Cr Baberowski said. “This art prize clearly demonstrates the excellent calibre of artists who call the Sunshine Coast home and we are proud to present the exhibition in partnership with the Friends of the Regional Gallery. “A wander through the exhibition is a great opportunity to see the variety of high quality art that is being created right here on the Sunshine Coast and, if you’re quick enough, an opportunity to purchase one of the finalist works for yourself.”

You Said It What a great day
I would like to congratulate the Friends of Bankfoot House for the great job they did on Sunday, October 14 for the 150 year celebration. What a great event this turned out to be. I would also like to thank Ron Gillinder for giving me the opportunity to play a small part. It meant a lot to me as an old bushie who has been around horses all my life and also someone who appreciates the contribution of the early pioneering families, which included my grandparents. What made my day was when the Governor took the time to walk over and shake hands and say “well done” to an insignificant old bloke like me who was just there on a horse. I remember the horse teams and bullockies when I was growing up and to see bullocks called out by name and walk into the line to be yoked was something the young ones of today will never see. It was said that the owner Drew Kelly could flick a fly off your nose with his bullock whip and you would not feel it. Max Chapman Glass House Mountains
Horrendous storm
I had to write about the devastating storm damage that we at Glass House Mountains recently suffered. I have never experienced anything like it. While it sounded like a normal storm with heavy hail, once the power went out we were all in a position where we had to wait until morning to see what had happened. However, one of my dogs was very traumatised and kept me and others in the neighbourhood awake for a good part of the night. She made me aware of the power truck, with its flashing lights and workers trying to restore power at the front of my home in Barrs Road. At daylight we all faced the sight of unbelievable devastating damage. I would like to thank everyone who helped me in the clean-up here at Barrs Road, particularly the help extended to me by Glasshouse Country Care in the seven or so ute loads of debris that were removed from the property over the following two days. They were on the scene quickly and worked nonstop, even down to rethreading my washing line. As with everyone who had extreme damage, it will take us a while to forget this one. necessary in the first place. In the olden days, local parks were a core function of local councils. The tiniest communities had one or more, and benefactions were common. Today, “recreational space” is allocated on a 3:1000 formula (three hectares per 1,000 people). Council has cited Maleny’s alleged access to more than its formula share as a reason for abandoning the most park-perfect site in the district, Platypus Bend on the Precinct, for an indoor fitness village - a travesty comparable to abandoning the beach at Cotton Tree to an indoor skating arena. A decision is due next month. As to the formula, council defines recreational space as space used for “informal social, recreational and cultural activities which connect people and provide visual relief from the built form”. Search Maleny on council’s beaches and parks directory and you find that our share of this elusive ideal includes parks that are tiny and noisy like Cooke, perilous to the frail like the Gardners Falls Riparian Reserve, overrun by tourists and parking problems like Mary Cairncross, and not so much parks as pathways, lookouts and skateboard installations. Some are orphans of the 3:1000 formula, like Boyle and Fritz parks at Connondale 20 km away and the Little Yabba Rest Area at Cambroon, which is the same distance from Maleny as Caloundra is from Sunshine Coast Airport. We respectfully repeat our invitation to council, our service clubs and to Maleny's champion of recreation - the Maleny District Sport and Recreation Club - to join in remedying this situation by making Platypus Bend the park it deserves to be. Re: Cancer and Glyphosate
Regarding glyphosate, if Mr Gawith (GH&M News, 10 October) is embracing the scientific process it would be good to get his facts correct. His contention is about the value of glyphosate as one of hundreds of weed control chemicals. He indicated that the one report I quoted has been "discredited". I ask by whom was it “discredited”? I ask because the recent trial in the US, resulting in Monsanto having to pay $US289 million in damages to a school groundkeeper who developed cancer after regularly using Roundup at the school, exposed the fact that Monsanto has run campaigns to plant stories, suppress science and silence dissent to sell the chemical. All of this emerged from thousands of Monsanto's original documents subpoenaed for the trial.

It was a very positive meeting with some good questions asked by our Members who were able to find out more about the benefits of the proposed acquisition. In particular, the 10-year branch guarantee was discussed at length. The guarantee ensures business as usual so our branch stays open and staff keep their jobs. Pension woes
Have you tried to get your pension from Centrelink? Well, I would like to share with readers how difficult I have found the process. Seven months ago I handed my paperwork in to start the process. Having been to the Caloundra Centrelink office twice, I followed their advice and submitted more than 50 pages into the Centrelink system. Nothing happened for five months, even after I wrote to their complaints department. I got in contact with our federal member, Andrew Wallace, who finally started the ball rolling. I twice submitted additional paperwork, once sent by mail which was not received, and a second copy in person. In my opinion it would be much easier to have one caseworker instead of having to deal with a new worker every time when making an enquiry on the same matter. It would not be remiss if you could count on being treated with respect and courtesy. This would make the employment of a security guard unnecessary. The waiting time could be reduced by staff being available to just receive paperwork. The waiting time of up to two hours can be frustrating after repeated visits. I was pleased my federal member acted promptly and I would recommend anyone in a similar situation to contact Andrew Wallace. Philippa Howells’ solution in her letter to GC&M News, October 10 edition, regarding retail wrapping might suit females who tend to carry a handbag, but this is not so easy for us blokes! My wallet would not allow a foldable bag even though the ‘crinkly stuff’ is in short supply. However, I do agree that plastics bans are only playing into the hands of the manufacturers. We now buy plastic garbage bags, which are a lot larger and stronger and are only single use for disposal of our kitchen waste. We used to recycle the grocery flimsy bag for this purpose. Dr Nathan Abrahams from Dental Centre Maleny says it’s all in the foundations. Our smile, tooth function, facial features and how old you look all depend on your back teeth (molars). Without these teeth you can’t chew properly, and your front teeth get damaged and worn, which affects your smile and how far you can close before your teeth (or lack of teeth) meet. “I get people coming into the surgery, usually from their late 40s onwards, saying, “my front teeth have worn down, I have no smile and I can’t chew,” Dr Abrahams said. “Over the years, for whatever reason, whenever they have had an issue with a molar tooth they have decided to have it extracted as it’s only a back tooth. “If you do this a few times, 8-12 depending on whether you have wisdom teeth, it will then lead to the front teeth having to do all the work - work they were never designed to do. No wonder they wear down, chip and fall apart with time,” he said. In effect, the molar teeth are the slab and the rest of your teeth are the house/window dressing. We all know what happens to the house when the slab fails. To prevent the need for costly rebuilds of your front teeth, and having to somehow give you the molars back, it’s best to protect and save your molars. If you do lose your molars, replace them before the front teeth get damaged. Prevention is so much less costly and less hassle than having to fix it all, or worse, extract them all and replace with dentures.

In the Garden Backyard adventure playground Spring means fine, warm days – just great for getting the kids outside and active in the backyard. To encourage your children to spend more time outside (and away from a device), you need to make sure your backyard landscape is kidfriendly. A lush green lawn is an inviting area for kids to play. When times are drier, it can be difficult to keep an average lawn looking green. There are some terrific new lawn varieties that don’t need a lot of water, are low growing and can easily handle wear and tear. Backyard play areas need to be safe and secure. Screening with fences as well as plants and trees will enclose a garden and keep kids in and strangers out. But remember to allow for gates that are lockable or have latches above the reach height of young children. If you have a pool, make sure the pool fence is in good condition. If you have a water feature be wary as children can drown in even the shallowest amount of water. Try to avoid any major changes in levels that require more than two steps. Kids always fall down or up steps. If you do need steps, make them short in height and long in tread so children can manage them easily. Shade is important for children and good shade trees are a great asset in any garden. Large trees need a regular health check to make sure they are safe to climb and that their branches are sound. Speak to a tree specialist for professional advice
about the safety of your backyard trees. Shade sails are good alternatives, especially when spread over a sand pit or play gym. In high-use play areas – like a play gym – a softfall zone made from 15mm pine bark mulch is a great idea. It is clean, soft and is easily topped up every now and again. Sandpits are popular with kids and easy to install. Make sure you use washed sand, which will not stain clothes. It’s a good idea to make a cover for the sandpit when not in use so neighbourhood cats don’t leave any nasty surprises. Another important safety factor is to have good visibility from the house to the main play areas so adults can keep a watchful eye on the children. If you create a separate area for children, place a garden seat nearby so an adult can sit and keep an eye on them. Creating a raised garden bed with fresh edible plants is a great way to keep the kids outside and out of the fridge. Growing things like celery, parsley, carrots, beans, radishes and cherry tomatoes will not only keep them happy, but teach them good eating habits as well. One thing to remember when designing a kidfriendly backyard is scale. Everything in the adult world is too big and daunting for children, so think about reducing size for a child's play area. Stepping stones should be smaller with less distance for each step; paths should be narrow to give the impression it is a no adult area and dwarf plants can create a ‘land of the giants’ look. Using strange garden ornaments, like dragons, dinosaurs, fairies and zoo animals creates colour and excitement, stimulating the imagination and encouraging creative play.

Mickey Mouse plant Ochna serrulata This is one of those once common garden plants that have become a serious environmental weed. I must admit to becoming incensed about it as I see it growing everywhere, even in National Parks alongside newly developed walking tracks! Ochna was introduced as an attractive garden plant from South Africa and at one time could probably be found in most home gardens. By the number of requests I get for identification, many people are still not aware of this problem species. I am certain that in some situations it is being encouraged as an attractive garden plant. Spring is the perfect time to look out for seedlings as fruit feeding birds spread the seeds around the bush and in particular around bird baths in the home garden. The plants have glossy green toothed leaves with bronze new growth and can reach a height of two metres. Yellow flowers of five petals are followed by bright crimson sepals and green, then black fruit. The fruit is a ‘treat’ for many different birds. Currawongs, fig birds, orioles and even butcher birds find them attractive and tasty.

Mature plants are difficult to remove as they have an angled tap root which will regrow if broken. Use a mattock to remove or cut and paint with a herbicide.

According to the Bible, King Solomon was the wisest king who has ever lived. His wisdom was world famous, and brought with it great wealth, power and prosperity. However, there was a darker side to his reign that people often overlook. Because Solomon’s kingdom was so big in every way it required a vast organisation just to keep it running. To feed the organisation Solomon had to raise taxes and conscript his own people to keep things going. The people didn’t seem to mind, at least at first. Why would they – they were prosperous. According to the Bible the price of silver was the same as the price of dirt (in today’s language 20 kg of potting mix is about $7). But it didn’t last. The Bible was very clear - the King was not to do certain things. He wasn’t to amass gold or silver. Solomon did. I am sure Solomon had good reason to make lots of money - he was the King and kings have expenses. He was not allowed to take multiple wives. Marrying foreign wives was the way you made a

A wise king would make sure he had everything in place - finances and security. Solomon did, yet by the time he died the people were not happy. The prosperity they had longed for enslaved them. Within a very short time after his death, the empire Solomon had built was ruined by his son. Solomon had it all, but through his unwise choices he lost the lot. The record presents Solomon as the dumbest wise King who ever lived. Solomon chose to ignore God and he lost it all. The Bible encourages us to make wise choices throughout our lives, and the wisest choice we can make is to choose to follow God’s ways. Jesus said: “Everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his home on the rock”. Be wise, learn from Solomon and listen to the Lord Jesus.

Sport A very rainy Runfest The Maleny Blackall Range Lions Club’s RunFest, incorporating the Mountain View Challenge, went ahead on Sunday, October 14 despite rain, fog and very wet underfoot conditions for the competitors. Numbers were down due to the weather, but the times were still good and the competition strong. Winner of the half marathon was Brendan Press in the time of 1.25.29, with Clare Geraghty the first woman finishing in 1.32.49. Both primary and high school trophies were won by Caloundra City Private School. The 10km team event was won by Rhee Taekwondo made up of Nathan Arrowsmith, Orion Matthews and Joanne Turner.

Thursday, October 18 started out quite well but by the halfway mark down it came once again. We played a stableford with 32 players hitting off. Unfortunately, by the end there were only 23 ladies who finished, all very wet. Winner was Cindy Godfrey with a very good score in the conditions of 38 points. Runner up was Lea Doyle on 35 points, followed by Karen Gannon 31 points. NTPs: 2 - Cece Proud, 5 - Sue Williamson, 16 - Andrea Campbell (on second shot) and 18 - Mavis Brimelow. BRD went to 30 points. This rain has been most welcome but looking forward to some fine days.

Maroochydore TTs gave Witta Wagtails a great day of tennis. Many deuces and long games, but the TTs came out the winners on the day. Thanks to Christine, Jan, Sonia and Jenny Rosenberg for filling in for us on the day. The Whistlers played at Caloundra against Racquettes. It was a sunny day and we were all happy to be on the court after the rainy days. The tennis was great, so many rallies and running and we were exhausted by the end. Score was 4136 games, four sets all. Team was Aki Lepper, Donna Kuskopf, Brenda Warner and Paula Cudmore. The jet lagged Wildcats were at home to Caloundra Skylarks. It was great tennis and lots of laughter, which is what tennis is all about. Although the points didn’t go the way of the home team, it was still a great day. Unfortunately the Witta Wompoos finished the 2018 season with two hard fought home losses. On September 16, Gympie Bronze proved too strong with a 7-5 sets victory while on October 7 the Nambour No Worries prevailed 8-4. Congratulations to both visiting teams. A special thanks go to Rhonda and Jeff for filling in for our match against Nambour. While the Wompoos have had limited success in 2018, the tennis has been enjoyable and hopefully we can have more results going our way in 2019. Social tennis is on Monday 8am and Saturday 1pm. Contributed by Miles Allen Last week saw plenty of action on the bowling green from our players after the wet weather. The threat of showers didn't stop a big crowd from turning up on Wednesday night for round three of twilight bowls. Although it kept drizzling throughout the evening and umbrellas were popular accessories, the fun and games continued. Dave and Mick returned from a hectic work schedule to give our chairman Graeme some valuable coaching. Christine continues to use her European techniques to lead the Outlaws on their winning streak. Ray S played for two teams and inspired both to play better. As usual coach Neville kept an eye on the Musketeers and diplomatically told them how and where to improve. Hopefully they were paying attention! Our Scroungers competition on Friday brought a lot of players who were keen to get back into action after last week's cancellation. Handicaps are applied, so in theory everyone has an equal chance of winning. But you don't win by chance - dedication, concentration, consistency and (in some cases) skilful sledging pays off. The highest scoring winners were Jim and Margaret while Kay, Dave E and Brett also won their games. And if you didn't win on the green, you could always win the member's draw. This week sees us hosting teams from Mapleton, Kilcoy and Woodford in our highly contested monthly pairs competition. On Saturday, October 27 from 6-8pm we will be open for anyone to come along for a social evening with prizes galore. Happy bowling for the week ahead and if you're not bowling, you're missing out.

You have to pay by December 31, if you don’t a new membership form will need to be filled in, plus an extra $12.50 will have to be paid to bowls Queensland. You have two months to pay so no excuse to be late. Also green fees for social games will be going up from $12 to $13 next year. Q7’s, Gr 8 and Pennant will rise from $10 to $12.
