he second Glassys Gala event was held last Thursday night at Flame Hill Winery at Montville and the evening was all about recognising the great work that the many local businesses and their employees provide to locals and visitors across the Glass House Electorate. The event was organised by State Member Andrew Powell and is supported by the local Chambers of Commerce/ Business Associations from Palmwoods, Caboolture and Wamuran, as well those in the areas our newspaper delivers into at Montville, Maleny and Glasshouse Country. One thing that struck me on the night was how, among the employees that were nominated for awards, many of these went to the younger members of staff. Sometimes young people get a bad rap, so it was really nice to see that not only are they giving good service, but both their employers and the community are keen to recognise that. One of the winners on the night is a former employee of GC&M News, Krystal Thomas, who worked in our distribution team a number of years ago inserting catalogues into the papers. It is nice to know that we were part of her journey to finding her career and it is wonderful for us to see her passion and enthusiasm for her work these days. Congratulations to Krystal and all the those who received awards on the night – thanks for giving us great service and for making us feel special when we come into your workplaces/businesses. The Maleny Show Society held their annual Show Ball on Saturday night in the Show Pavilion, and there was plenty of glitz and glamour, plus an extra reason to celebrate as the show is celebrating its 80th anniversary this year. While the guests enjoyed a fun and relaxing night, it definitely looked like the judges had a tough job with the always difficult task of choosing the most deserving winners. The evening’s judges were Roy Henzell from Henzell’s Real Estate in Caloundra, whose mum was a Maleny girl, along with Leonie Wallace and Taryn Powell – the lovely wives of our Federal and State Members, Andrew Wallace and Andrew Powell.

Showgirl entrants were Bernadette Hodgson from Wootha, Alexandra Watson from Conondale, Breanne Rose from Landsborough and Madison Cox from Witta. Junior Show Princess entrants were Sharn Phipps from Maleny, Neive Vinall from Maleny, Kayla Moore from Beerwah, Tamara Forsdike from Beerwah and Chloe Lanham from Conondale, with Sharn named the winner of Junior Show Princess and Neive named the runner-up. A group of concerned Maleny locals fear that once Tranquil Park Mountain Retreat is sold the community will lose what could be a unique community facility. They believe that it would make a marvellous venue for an Independent High School, a world class seminar facility, conference rooms, business offices, or for weddings and catered functions and community events. The complex is for sale via a tender process and the group are looking for a benefactor to help them keep this unique local facility. The group’s spokesperson, Keith Bosstock, said, “We believe the facility could be run profitably for an investor/benefactor while providing unique and much needed services for the Maleny community.” The resort includes three conference rooms, two restaurants, 31 self-contained bedrooms, a tennis court, heaps of guest parking, a separate manager’s home with its own entrance, and it’s
just 10 minutes into town. This unique facility is built over a number of levels which means events or usages could run concurrently without impacting on each other. The large conference room holds around 150 people comfortably while the other two smaller rooms are very impressive, and with spectacular views across the Glass House Mountains it is definitely a unique building. “Previously the whole top level, including a dance floor, was used for weddings and community gatherings and was a very, very profitable business service,” Keith said. “The group really hopes that a communityminded benefactor or a group comes forward to negotiate a way that Maleny doesn’t lose this important local icon.” A complete history of the resort, including financials, is available on request and if you would like to make contact with the group please email keith@higherkey.net.

It’s all go for NBN towers After Sunshine Coast Council rejected the NBN tower applications for Beerwah, Glass House Mountains and Eudlo in mid2016, the matter went to appeal in the Planning and Environment Court. After a brief sitting last week, a judgement has been made which will see the three disputed towers get the planning approval NBN needs. The way is now open for the fixed wireless broadband network to commence with these three towers – located at 2001 Old Gympie Road, Glass House Mountains (the Teamsters Hall of Fame site); Tower Lane, Beerwah (locally called Rupari Hill); and 419 PalmwoodsMooloolah Road, Eudlo. Council originally refused the three applications on varying grounds, most of which related to them not meeting the requirements and community standards set out in the strategic planning scheme. NBN refuted council’s non-compliance assertions, as well as arguing that there are no other possible locations which would provide the required community benefit outcomes. The judgement handed down by the court fully agrees with the appeal by NBN, essentially determining that the original applications do comply with the planning scheme and that the refusal by council was unfounded. The court did provide that the towers must meet certain conditions, but, as written, these appear basic in nature. Each party was also ordered to bear their own costs.
NBN is clearly happy with the outcome, according to Jill Bottrall, Corporate Affairs Manager. “NBN appreciates council’s efforts in facilitating the roll out of the Fixed Wireless program in the Sunshine Coast, which will provide high quality broadband service to over 2,200 premises including the Eudlo, Beerwah and Mt Ngungun communities,” she said. “NBN will continue to work with council to progress the Fixed Wireless network within the Sunshine Coast LGA.” Taking legal advice and negotiating with NBN, Sunshine Coast Council is making the most of the loss in court. “The topography, location and vegetation in the three communities makes it is difficult to supply broadband services to these areas,” said a council spokesperson. “If these facilities are not located in the approved locations, the communities will not have secure access to the broadband network. Feedback from many residents indicated they considered such a situation unacceptable as they require secure internet connection. “Strict conditions have also been imposed requiring attention to the colours and finishes of the facilities, landscaping at ground level, and health and safety requirements.” However, Division 1 Councillor Rick Baberowski is a little less acquiescent. “My position has always been for the hinterland communities to have the high standard of broadband they wanted and need through FTTN,” he said.

Community protest against the NBN tower proposal in Palm Street, Maleny in 2015 “However, given the complete inflexibility of the Federal Government NBN contract and now the court decision, the wireless network will be moving ahead. “I have received assurances that our communities will not be disadvantaged in terms of performance, safety and cost due to this decision. We now need to hold them to those assurances.” The decision now gives NBN free rein to lodge their remaining tower applications knowing that council’s planning scheme will not stand in their way. These include the known locations of tower sites at Appaloosa Drive, Conondale, Curramore Road, Witta, Palm Street, Maleny, Burgess Street, Maleny, Sinclairs Lane, Balmoral Ridge, and Link Road, Glass House Mountains.

Major construction has officially commenced on the $929.3 million Bruce Highway Upgrade – Caloundra Road to Sunshine Motorway project, which will increase safety and ease congestion for around 40,000 motorists who use the route daily. Federal Infrastructure and Transport Minister Darren Chester and State Main Roads and Road Safety Minister Mark Bailey turned the first sod for this much-needed highway upgrade last Thursday. Mr Chester said, “This upgrade will provide nearly 700 direct jobs, and project works will include transforming the Caloundra Road Interchange to a Diverging Diamond Interchange – a first for Australia.” State Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said the project was vital for the continued development of the Coast and would provide safer, more efficient travel for motorists and industry along this section of the Bruce Highway. “The project will involve upgrading the highway from four to six lanes, including major upgrades to both the Caloundra Road and Sunshine Motorway interchanges,” Mr Bailey said. “A new two-way western service road will also be provided for local traffic between Steve Irwin Way and Tanawha Tourist Drive.” “My department and I worked hard to minimise the impact of this project specifically to the Beerwah State Forest and the design will continue to evolve as construction progresses which may include further reduction of impacts on the forest.” Federal Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace said the Sunshine Motorway interchange, and the western service road roundabout would be

Fred Smith - a mate for his mates

Fred Smith’s recent concert for the Maleny Arts Council revealed an artist whose repertoire exemplified our nation’s wide-ranging celebration of mateship, although it is doubtful you could find the word in many of his lyrics. But it is there, in the dry humour, the Aussie nicknames, in the empathy of ‘Sappers’ Lullaby’ in memory of ‘Smithy’ and ‘Snowy’, in the expression of war’s futility as he sings the story of Queenslander Private Warren and the death of Ben Ranaudo from a hidden mine in the title song ‘Dust of Uruzgan’, and in a self-confessed open-mindedness in the controversial ‘Live like an Afghan’. Mates4Mates had a display next to a table with Fred’s book ‘The Dust of Uruzgan’ and his and his associate artist Liz Frencham’s CDs. Mates4Mates is a hands-on contemporary version of Legacy that delivers practical and psychological help to current and ex-serving Australian Defence Force members who are wounded or ill as a result of their service, and to the families of those who have died in the field or later as a result of their physical or mental trauma. I met Fred’s fans. There was Peter Douglas, who had spent $200 just to be in Maleny from his home in Jundah. There was the bearded John Baines (Bainesy) – the Quartermaster who doubled as a guitarist in the camp band – chatting with a group that included a young doctor wearing a Mates4Mates cap and a young woman who told me they were all there in Uruzgan with the 6th Royal Mentoring Task force.… and a fourth, a somewhat older woman who said simply “and I am the mother of a fallen soldier”.

Research shows cyber security threat a reality
Former Beerwah High student Stephanie Jensen has been accepted as an Australian delegate to the 2017 OECD Forum as part of the Global Voices Program. Stephanie, 26, now a CQ University student, has been researching cyber security policy in Australia and has recently been speaking with government representatives in Canberra about Australia’s security threat landscape. Stephanie, 26, believes that there is not enough being done to minimise the threats to cyber security.
"In the wake of the cyber-attack crisis affecting UK hospitals, it is evident that more needs to be done to mitigate the impact to Australian institutions and businesses. "It is more important than ever for the Australian Government to take an introspective stance on our own domestic security posture." Stephanie hopes that the latest cyber security events highlight the need for further research and will force politicians into action by adopting appropriate frameworks and policies. Stephanie will be flying to Paris in June along with other delegates to attend the OECD Forum.

You Said It Adani and automation
Claims have been made of the huge number of jobs the Carmichael mine will create. What rarely gets a mention is that the Adani group intend to automate this huge mine. Few people I have spoken with really understand what this means. Automation means that processes will be controlled by computers, not people. Machines and equipment will be largely self-driven with control passed to a handful of technical staff in a control room. Rio Tinto already has a driverless train system carrying iron ore in the Pilbara region of WA. This system is controlled from Perth. Sydney is building its first automated (driverless) rail system into the north western suburbs. These trains won’t require drivers or guards. They will be controlled from a state-of-the-art control room at Rouse Hill. Many mines already have trucks where the drivers only steer. The speed and braking is done by computer operated systems. Some are already receiving their first trucks that also steer themselves so they won’t require drivers. Driverless coal cutters are already being used in underground mines in Australia. Before too long most mines in Australia will only need a few technicians and a small maintenance crew. The days of large numbers of workers in mines are numbered. Automation for big business means a smaller wage bill and more profits. Robots and automated systems do much of the work in large factories and warehouses. Look around you at the way automated systems are being rolled out in supermarkets and large stores. Next time you hear the grandiose claims of jobs, jobs, jobs, take a moment to reflect on the costs of automation in human terms. Ron Day Landsborough

They are basically digital RF (radio frequency) meters replacing the old analogues (with the turning wheel) that have not

Around the world there is a move to upgrade all meters to newer 'smart meters' that are meant to save you on power and will be able to be read in situ, by you, and by the power company so that they can monitor your power use. Elsewhere in Australia, mostly in Victoria, smart meters were made mandatory. This sounded good, however you had no choice but to lose your old meters – even though they never failed – and have them replaced with this self-powered RF broadcasting smart meter. What for – to monitor directly all home and business power use. However, here's why people, councils and communities around the world are rejecting smart meters: radiofrequency (RF) interference with WiFi equipment, RF interference with medical equipment like pacemakers and wireless insulin pumps, RF spikes causing appliances to break, health effects like migraines, nausea, vomiting, muscle spasms, and heart palpitations caused by intense bursts of RF radiation classified as a "possible carcinogen" by the World Health Organisation, cyber-security breaches, excessive billing, surveillance of personal identity information and electrical fires. WHAT a list! In Queensland they are not compulsory, however you have to write to AGL or Origin, etc, and tell them you do not want a smart meter surveilling your home, otherwise after December 1 this year it will be hard to knock them back. Koalas matter
Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service state that a koala that has been sterilised or impacted negatively by an injury and or illness that affects their ability to escape predators must be killed. You will find the exact terminology for this statement in the Code of Practice for sick, injured and orphaned koalas. I use the word ‘killed’ deliberately because they are healthy in every other measure. Some examples of this sort of thing includes losing a digit on a foot or hand, visual loss in one or both eyes, hearing loss in one or both ears, lung damage due to pneumonia or if a female koala is unable to breed they must be euthanised. Carers believe that every animal has the right to live if it can in a relatively normal fashion in a protected environment such as sanctuary or wildlife park. Koala Action Inc is fund raising to undertake hand raised joey koala monitoring projects that follow the youngsters for several years to see what happens.

With that information we can then make decisions that ensure a better outcome for the release of hand raised joeys and rehabilitated koalas. If enough people write letters or emails, ring their elected representatives to raise the profile on these matters things will change. If you don’t want to directly intervene on the koalas behalf you can join a group such as Koala Action Inc who have been working for over 11 years on changing legislation and policies that are no longer appropriate considering the escalating decline of the koala population all over Queensland. Traffic lights needed
The chaos on Old Gympie Road outside the Beerwah State School last Thursday morning, caused by traffic avoiding the accident on Steve Irwin Way and then having to make the difficult right turn into Peachester Road in order to get into Beerwah, shows that it is not just at school times that traffic jams occur at that intersection. The problem last week inevitably led to another accident. Do we have to wait for a fatality before the Department of Transport heeds our plea for traffic lights there? I am writing in response to letters by Sal Hopley and Gerry Muller and Jon Woodlands. I have found it interesting to read and to follow the discussion – but just one remark. Unfortunately ‘coal’ as a commodity is out for the future if we don’t want the globe to destroy itself over time. We ratified The Paris Accord with 146 parties (countries) so we have made a commitment. Our main problem in the future with ‘renewables’ is creating a secure base-load energy production system – one not polluting the globe. Lots of new technologies are being tried. ‘Real’ clean coal makes the coal two-thirds more expensive – it may pollute less but it’s not really zero emissions.

India and China are producing and testing thorium reactors (not producing plutonium for atomic bomb production) at present. A Dutch technical institute ‘think-tank’ has some views for us, including that old power-stations can be used if we provide energy to them via renewable sources, and produce ammonia. Ammonia has been used as a fuel in the past and produces energy up to 60% of diesel oil. Ammonia and oxygen together does not produce any CO2 during the burning process to run the generators to produce energy during times when renewable (sun and wind) are not available. NBN flood wave
A cataclysmic cave-in earthquake occurred in the Planning and Environment Court last week as a result of the movement of a bullying NBN appeal structure overriding a weak Sunshine Coast Council defence structure of its Planning Scheme. The subsequent tsunami of hinterland resident disgust washed away any trust in the willingness or ability of council and its councillors to defend the council’s comprehensive Telecommunications Facility Code which was set up for protection of visual amenity and resident wellbeing. This ‘lack of backbone’ approach by council was probably determined by ‘flat land’ living people who will receive their broadband via fibre cable. The Hinterland residents want access to NBN broadband but not via the use of microwave towers. In the preparation of the Code within the Planning Scheme, council showed significant foresight by setting quite comprehensive criteria for the siting of any proposed telecommunication towers. The only criteria that NBN will now follow will be to ‘site it where it suits them and where they can convince a landowner to accept their payment’. Visual amenity and wellbeing of people count for nought. Provision of broadband may be in the public interest but it can be provided by fibre services and at the speed being promised for that service rather than a slower and possibly weather affected service through microwave towers. How can it be argued that a 55 metre high lattice tower would not look out of place in the middle of a view of the Glass House Mountains which are listed by the State Government and the council as local icons?
There will soon be a flood wave of NBN tower proposals. This ‘cave-in’ by council will demonstrate to NBN that their proposals will be secured. This is based on the knowledge that the council will not listen to the legitimate objections of nearby residents. Where does this leave affected residents and visitors? Jim Straker Reeceville

Dog ownership
Well done Michelle for writing a letter about dog ownership (GC&M News May 10). I totally agree with your comments. Too often do I see dogs locked in yards never walked or sadly just fed and watered and never included in family life. All animals have feelings and emotions like we do and we need to learn their language. There is plenty of literature about understanding the language of dogs and animals. Dogs are a pack animal so when you leave to go about your daily lives they experience various degrees of anxiety. To help with this, exercise is key. Put yourself in their place, looking at the same walls day in and out. No wonder holes are being dug! Also punishing your dog after the fact is pointless. They will not associate this with the crime and will relate this to you and be confused. In my opinion, not letting your dog inside to interact with you is another mistake. Dogs and cats are so affectionate and I love nothing more than being greeted by excited wags and loud
purring from my ‘furmily’ when I come home. To me it makes life worthwhile. There are plenty of groomers around the area to keep your dog clean and fresh to help with hygiene. So please people, choose your animals carefully and not on a whim. If you can't afford the care or time it takes to look after a dog please don't get one. Do your homework because animals, like children, are a lifelong commitment and in my opinion equally rewarding. By the way Michelle, I loved the picture with your letter, beautiful. Mines, taxes and CO2
Jon Woodlands (GC&M News May 17), refers to Paul Cleary's book ‘Too Much Luck’ and compares Norway's and Australia's mining industries: they have a sovereign fund of $500 billion dollars and we have a debt of $500 billion dollars. In his book ‘Trillion Dollar Baby’, Paul Cleary explains how small Norway with its meagre population stood up to the oil companies and refused to be bullied. By contrast when a recent Australian government tried to introduce extra tax for foreign mining companies' extra profits we caved in and pressured for the tax to be abolished. To avoid being depressed I read on to the CO2 discussion. To go from pre Industrial Revolution CO2 levels in the atmosphere to the current approximate 400ppm seems to have happened in a relatively short time. One only has to experience the air quality in places like Delhi and Beijing to realise we are already changing the climate. Increased CO2 levels in the air may well increase plant growth but I'm not hanging around to find out what happens if it ever reaches 2000ppm. Ian Pollock Witta

Method Preheat the oven to 180˚C/360F. Line a 12-cup muffin tin with paper cases. Add flour to a large bowl and make a well in the middle, pour in milk, cheese and two thirds of the ham. Season with sea salt and cracked pepper. Gently fold until just combined. Spoon evenly into muffin cases and place a little of the remaining ham on top of each one. Bake for 25 minutes or until the muffin tops are golden brown.

Maleny QCWA is studying both this year. Queensland Country Women's Association promotes a primary product annually and ginger has been chosen for 2017. We are enjoying finding out about its medicinal, culinary and horticultural uses. A different country has been studied since 1945 and we are now learning all about Nepal which was, of course, a great opportunity to enjoy a meal at the Nepalese restaurant in Maleny. Contributed by Gweneth Brooks Last Thursday saw the Glasshouse Country Toastmasters move in to their new meeting place in The Church on the Rise Building, in Beerwah Parade at Beerwah. Everyone pitched in and set up the meeting room. During the meeting, Barbara Ratcliffe gave a speech concerning ‘Each of us is Influential’. She made some very poignant and interesting points for us to think about such as how a smile can lighten someone’s day. Charlotte Herring treated us to a great listening exercise as she read aloud from a children’s book, ‘The Dragon’s Island’. Both ladies will present these two items at a social day on Sunday May 21 at the Assembly Hall, Beerwah State School. Kerry Gillam is thinking up ways to ‘wow’ the audience with the wildest of a Tall Tale. With a little more adjusting the club will be right at home in the new meeting venue. Popular local guest speaker Lee Dominick (pictured) from the 5th Light Horse Regiment, Maleny Troop, presented her talk ‘The Role of the Horse and its Trooper in World War I’ at the Caloundra Family History Research resource centre at the May meeting. Lee is an active Rider member of the Troop and, because of her love of horses, she devotes her recreational time to its success. Her talk encompassed information on the horse rather than the trooper, explaining how these animals were transported and the conditions they endured. Rosemary Kopittke from QFHS will present a FindmyPast Demonstration on Monday May 29 from 10am to noon, which free for members, and for visitors it is $10. How’s your macula? This week from May 21 until May 27 is Macular Degeneration Awareness Week so we asked A/Professor Leo Hartley, a doctor and optometrist to explain more about this condition.
What is macular degeneration? When you look directly at something, you are focusing using your maculas. For people with macular degeneration, when they look directly at something it looks blurred, distorted or may even disappear. The macula is that part of the retina that has the greatest density of cone receptors allowing the best, most accurate vision as well as colour vision. It allows people to identify faces, read, drive and watch television. Macular degeneration occurs when the macula is damaged usually due to ageing.
What about the rest of the retina? What’s it used for?
the wet type. The wet type can progress rapidly and makes up the other 10% of cases. The wet type is characterised by accumulation of fluid in the macula, whereas the dry type usually has accumulation of metabolic waste products under the macula.
Do the treatments differ for each type? Yes, we can treat the wet form with injections into the eye. These can quite dramatically reduce the rate of progression. They are usually given monthly or two-monthly.
Where can I get them? Are the injections painful? Our Vitreo-Retinal Specialist, Dr Sharma, does the injections in our rooms. There is usually no pain or discomfort associated with them because adequate eye numbing is done prior to the injection.
The non-macula retina allows us to tell where things are, to tell us where we are and to help us not to bump into things. It’s also important for night vision. In addition, it allows us to detect the finest movements (like a flickering fluorescent light).
Why does the degeneration only occur at the macula and not the whole of the retina? The macula has a blood supply only from the blood vessels below the macula, whereas the rest of the retina has a good blood supply from above the retina as well. This means a build up of metabolic waste products can affect the macula more profoundly than the rest of the retina.
What’s the most common cause of macular degeneration? Age, smoking, genetics, high blood pressure and poor diet can all contribute to causing macular degeneration.
There are two main types of age related macular degeneration (AMD). Can you tell us more about these types? The most common form is the dry type. The dry type progresses relatively slowly and makes up about 90% of AMD cases. Then there is also
What about treatment for dry AMD? At the moment there are only dietary supplements (AREDS 2) and dietary recommendations. However, trials are currently underway for new drug and injectable treatments. Smoking increases the risk of AMD three to four times, so quitting is essential. Controlling blood pressure is essential as well.
How about some specific advice regarding diet for macular degeneration? Studies suggest that eating antioxidant-rich foods, such as fresh fruits and dark green leafy vegetables (kale, collard greens and spinach, for example), may delay the onset or reduce the severity of dry AMD. These types of vegetables contain lutein, which may protect the macula from sun damage, just as it protects the leaves of these vegetables from sun damage. Eating at least one serving of fatty fish per week
may also delay the onset or reduce the severity of dry AMD. Also avoid as much as possible packaged foods – which often contain omega-6 fatty acids in the form of vegetable oils. It’s important to keep a balance between omega-6 fatty acids and omega-3 fatty acids in our diets. We need to increase our intake of omega-3s and decrease our intake of omega-6s. Avoid artificial fats. Low-fat foods are good options if they’ve achieved their low-fat status through a process that physically removes the fat. Skim milk and low fat cottage cheese are examples of these types of good low-fat foods. Usually a low-fat or no-fat label on baked goods doesn’t mean less fat was used in the production of the food, but that an artificial fat was used. These types of fats are artificial ingredients made in a laboratory and our bodies can’t metabolize them. So it’s best to eat real cookies – just don’t eat the whole dozen! Finally, seek to incorporate exercise into your everyday life as obesity may increase the risk for progression to advanced AMD.
What resources would you recommend for macular degeneration? Do an internet search for the Macular Disease Foundation of Australia. It has some great advice.

Australian adventure from east to west
By Sonia Clark Mount Mellum couple Damian and Thelma Petrie recently embarked on an incredible caravanning adventure from the most easterly point on the Australian mainland to the most westerly point. Starting at Cape Byron, the approximately 25,000 km expedition to Steep Point in Western Australia and back is expected to take the couple three months to complete. Along the way they plan to visit Cape Bossut, where as a young navy man in the 1960s Damian was stationed at a naval survey camp for three months. The adventure will also take in Perth, the Margaret River region, the Nullarbor Plain, Esperance and Port Augusta. Damian said he and Thelma were really excited to be doing this particular trip. “We’ve done a lot of road trips together, but this one will be the most challenging in terms of long stretches of isolation, lack of supplies and the number of sandy tracks and sand dunes,” he said. Deciding a year ago to undertake this mammoth adventure, Damian and Thelma have spent months gathering supplies, preparing their off road equipment and conducting detailed research into the trip including road conditions, locations of fuel stops and water bores. Now is the best time for the journey as conditions are not as hot with temperatures generally staying below 30 degrees and there will be less chance of being caught in rain. “We are well prepared for this exciting challenge, we’ve done many trips around Australia but this will be the longest trip we’ve done,” said Damian. An avid landscape photographer, Damian is also looking forward to giving his camera a robust workout on the journey and no doubt he will be keen to share some of his great images with the readers of GC&M News.

Mothers’ week at GCC
Mothers aren’t just spoiled on Mother’s Day at Glasshouse Christian College – they have a whole week of it! The celebrations begin with the Prep Mothers’ Night on Tuesday. This is a precious evening where mums have a ‘date’ with their Prep child and try out some of the things that the students learn in Prep. There is singing, dancing, creating and playing and, as always, a delicious supper to follow. On Wednesday a special Mother’s Day chapel is held. Mothers are greeted with a thoughtful small gift and then treated to a concert celebrating motherhood.

The concert included poems, songs (with very cute actions) and readings on why the children love their mums. There was hardly a dry eye in the place when Prep students sang why they need ‘10 Hugs a Day’. On Thursday the school’s P and F held its Mother’s Day stall where there was everything from hula dancing mums for the car dashboard to coffee mugs with, “I’m a proud Glasshouse Christian College MUM.” Many of the younger students chose chocolates with the hope that mum would feel generous on the day and share her bounty.

Tis the Season to be Planting
With Spencer and Karen Shaw Not sure if it’s the cooler weather or the regular rainfall, but after the long hot dry summer I’m enjoying planting lots of plants again and they are thriving in the moist soils and gentler temperatures. We’re often asked ... “When is the best time to plant here?” ... to which I’d generally answer “In SE QLD it’s always a good time to plant!” ... but then again, we are selling you plants! But seriously, the trick to successful plant establishment is to avoid the extremes, such as heat, flood, frost. These extremes are the main limiting factors to when you can plant successfully. For example if you live in a frost prone area, then now is not the best time to plant frost sensitive plants, but many plants aren’t frost sensitive due to their own natural anti-freeze. Also luckily the majority of the coast and parts of the hinterland are unlikely to suffer from damaging frosts. Which leads me back to the benefits of planting right now. The cooler weather is great to be outdoors and enjoying the health and wellbeing benefits of gardening and working on the land. Planting now is gentler on the plants, with good moisture and less heat stress. Establishing plants in autumn, allows plants to prepare for spring and summer and so you can then enjoy the fruits of your labour from the shade of your veranda (or tree you planted five years ago!). Plant today and reap the rewards in the months and years to come.

Open gardens galore at Flaxton A major drawcard for the Gardening on the Edge weekend (June 10 and 11) on the Blackall Range is the lovely open gardens made available to for us to wander around and wonder at. This year, of the six gardens, three are at Flaxton and three at Maleny ... we wrote about one of these last week – Pattemore House. The three Flaxton acreage gardens, all within a short distance of each other, showcase three different approaches to gardening. Bush tucker and productive gardening is a strong focus for one of the gardens surrounded by ornamental areas and a new native garden section. If you appreciate camellias, you’ll appreciate this garden with its wide variety and forms of the popular flowering shrub ... and they’re in their prime at this time of the year too. Another makes use of a large waterhole, home to fish and turtles, surrounded by water plants and reeds. You’ll see how they used a gravel bed and wetland to filter and clean the water ... so much so that the waterhole forms a natural swimming pool. There is extensive old growth high canopy forest which is a habitat for a wide range of native birds and animals. The old avocado trees have been well utilised as cover for an understorey of colour – clivias, orchids, cordyline, just to name a few. And then not too far away is a third garden with displays of camellias, michaelias, euodias and gordonias enjoying the borrowed landscape of the seasonal dam and shade areas. Other areas include the butterfly garden where salvias, buddlias and roses flower. The bird gardens attract naturally with massed grevilleas, kangaroo paws, blue quandongs and many native species. And don’t miss the resident bower bird. All three gardens will have refreshments available, with proceeds going to local charities and organisations. Gardening on the Edge is a yearly initiative of the Maleny Garden Club. Six gardens are opened to the public and you can choose to purchase entry tickets for just one or multiples up to the full six gardens. As well, the club hosts their fabulous garden and plant expo at the Maleny Showgrounds over the weekend where you can buy your garden entry tickets and lots of other great plants and products for your garden. Native Lasiandra
Melastoma malabathricum This beautiful native species is often confused with the exotic Tibouchina because the flowers are very similar. However, while the exotic species is generally known by the deep purple colour, native Melastoma is usually a lovely pink/mauve colour. Melastoma occurs as an open shrub usually to two metres, growing in moist eucalypt forests, along stream banks or fringes of rainforests. The shrub stems are slightly rough and hairy, as are the attractively veined leaves which are paler on the underside. The beautiful five or six petalled flowers brighten the bush at any time of the year. They are followed by edible fruit with purple pulp which was popular with Aborigines as bush tucker. Since the fruit stains the mouth, the plant is also commonly known as “blue tongue”. Melastoma flowers produce quantities of pollen making them attractive to native bees and butterflies. Consider growing the native species instead of the exotic Tibouchina. These are usually available from the GMAN nursery.

Lone Pines in Glasshouse Country
Visit Sunshine Coast Am The original ‘Lone Pine’ was a single bassador tree on the Gallipoli Peninsula in Turkey, Esther Sanderson, with Gla sshouse which marked the site of the Battle of Country RSL Sub-branch President Lone Pine in 1915. Peter Hyde, Trevor Barth oldt and Scott This year, 102 years after this historic White from Sunshine Coa st Council event, the Glasshouse Country RSL Sub-branch made sure as part of our recent Anzac Day commemorations that Glasshouse Country would also have some ‘Lone Pine’ trees of our own. President of the sub-branch, Peter Hyde, explained that three of the trees have been planted in the school grounds at Glass House Mountains, Beerburrum and Landsborough State School and another one has been planted outside the Visitor Information Centre at Glass House Mountains. “We also contacted Hansen Quarries and they have generously supplied us with local stones that will be placed next to the plants and will feature a plaque marking the occasion, which will soon be installed,” Peter said. The tree was named after a popular song of the time, ‘Lonesome Pine’, and was the only remaining one on a ridge from a group of trees cut down by Turkish soldiers – who used the branches to cover their trenches. It was destroyed by shell fire during the ensuing battles. Pine cones attached to the branches were collected by Australian soldiers and brought back to Australia as a poignant reminder of the battle. Soldiers from various battalions brought back pine cones from the battle site, and a number of years following the war seeds from the cones were planted by family members and those involved in Legacy services. A handful of seedlings grew and were planted to serve as a memorial to the Australian and New Zealand soldiers who fought at Gallipoli. The seedlings became known as ‘Lone Pines’ or ‘Gallipoli Pines’ referencing the original tree. Trees from these seedlings were planted around the country including at The Shrine of Remembrance and the Australian War Memorial. Now, over one hundred years since the battle, there are many of these pine trees growing in Australia.
Underwing Moth Project The Friends of Cahill’s Scrub’s Pink Underwing Moth Project, being undertaken on the Cahill’s Scrub Reserve, is now substantially underway with the planting of over 300 trees, shrubs, and ground cover plants. However, much work remains to be done. Our next working bee will be held this Saturday morning, May 27, commencing at 9am. Glass House MP takes the (blood) pressure down
Glass House MP Andrew Powell says it only takes three actions to take the blood pressure down and he is working his way through the list. He has had his blood pressure checked and now he plans to raise awareness in his electorate of Glass House and support legislation and community action to improve cardiovascular health. “Blood pressure is a silent killer because there are often no obvious signs or symptoms and half the people who have high blood pressure don’t know they have it and therefore are not managing to control it,” Mr Powell said. “I recently rolled up my sleeve for a blood pressure check at Parliament thanks to the Heart Foundation and Stroke Foundation and I’m grateful my blood pressure is normal. It is something I check every year because I know that the only way to detect any change is to have regular checks.” Mr Powell said he would like to encourage everyone in Glass House to follow suit and not let a heart attack or stroke be the first sign that they have high blood pressure. “Next time you go to the doctor, just get your GP to check your blood pressure while you’re there and then make it an annual check,” he said. “There are other things we can do as well to reduce high blood pressure, such as being active

Benefits of a Mediterranean Diet
The Range Community Gym will be holding a seminar on the effects of the Mediterranean Diet on your mind and body as you age. Dr Anthony Villani, lecturer in the Bachelor of Nutrition and Dietetics program at Dr Anthony Villani the University of the Sunshine Coast, will be discussing these matters and how the Mediterranean Diet can assist in the prevention of chronic diseases. Other speakers include Alexina Johnson, who will be talking about olive oil, a prime ingredient in the Mediterranean Diet. The talk will be held at the Mapleton Bowls Club on Sunday, June 4 from 9.30am to 1.30pm. The cost is $15 for gym members, $20 non-members. Morning tea and lunch will be provided (Mediterranean of course!). Tickets are pre-purchased and can be obtained from The Range Community Gym or the Mapleton Library. Living - Arts Open Studio Trail for May with Co-ordinator Judi Parkinson
Autumn colours are splashing across the Hinterland as we drift into winter, so it is the perfect opportunity for driving across the range and popping in to visit our artists in their warm studio/ galleries. The May Trail is open on Saturday and Sunday, May 27 and 28, from 10am to 4pm both days. This month we have thirteen artists demonstrating their talents at twelve studios, and their fine arts and merchandise are available for sale. It always provides extra meaning to your visiting experience or purchase to hear the story or concept behind a creation. Our Feature Artist is Bronwyn Brands. Bronwyn has studied oil painting, life drawing, pastel painting and portraiture at the Brisbane Institute of Art and is inspired by the effects of light and shade in her still life studies and landscapes. Chronic Back Pain? Help Is At Hand As part of Spinal Health Week 2017 (22-28 May), local chiropractors are raising awareness of chronic back pain and encouraging Australians to seek help. Spinal Health Week is a health initiative of the Chiropractors’ Association of Australia and as part of this year’s campaign, Dr Braxton Turnage from Adjust To Life Chiropractic is encouraging Beerwah residents to seek help for chronic back pain. Chronic back pain is a national issue. One in six Australians suffer from the physical and psychological effects of chronic back problems – that’s an estimated 3.7 million people suffering. “The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare defines chronic back pain as a health condition that lasts for three months or longer” says Annie Sutherland, Chiropractic assistant. A sedentary lifestyle and poor posture are risk factors for chronic back pain. Braxton said the good news is it’s never too late to improve spinal health. “Simple measures such as incorporating walking into your daily routine can improve chronic back pain symptoms. Walking keeps the spine active and mobile. Improving posture can also help to relieve strain on the spine and improve circulation.” Chiropractic care focuses on the relationship between the spine and nervous system without the use of surgery or drugs. Australian chiropractors are five-year university trained healthcare professionals, regulated by the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency, and must complete mandatory continuing professional development. For chronic back problems, chiropractors use a variety of treatments such as spinal manipulation or manual therapies. Working with other healthcare providers where needed, chiropractors also offer advice on self-management through exercise and lifestyle changes. Uncle Alan Parsons, an Aboriginal elder from Caboolture, will share stories from recent travels, facilitate discussion about the ‘Unification of a Nation’ and donate a beautiful painting as a part of National Reconciliation Week 2017 at Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre. Uncle Alan recently attended a gathering of elders at Halls Gap in Victoria followed by a trip to Tasmania where he participated in the Nayri Naira (Good Spirit) festival, which was a powerful demonstration of how the indigenous people of Tasmania have regained their identity, language, lore and culture. His journey south carried the theme of coming together of indigenous and non-indigenous people to honour the healing and reconnection to the land. “I feel so richly blessed to have the opportunity to encourage people to stand together in Unity of Spirit,” Uncle Alan said. This Saturday, May 27, marks the 50th anniversary of the 1967 referendum where over 90% of Australians voted to give the Commonwealth the power to make laws for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and recognise them in the National Census. In line with this year's National Reconciliation Week theme ‘Let’s Take the Next Steps’, Uncle Alan will donate a beautiful artwork entitled 'Hands of Unity' to the Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre. Uncle Alan’s 'mob' are from Bidjira/Yiman country around Carnarvon Gorge in Central Queensland (between Injune and Springsure). He also has connections to Jinaburra people in Woodford and Kilcoy areas through his relatives Willie McKenzie, Willie Crow and Clive Combo. School News Students off to great start! The students from Black Swan School of Dance's junior performance team recently kick started their competition year by competing at the Sunshine Coast Dance Eisteddfod 2017. Dancing against fierce competition, the team wowed audience members and adjudicators receiving a placing of Highly Commended in the 8 Years and Under Jazz category. Mrs Rebecca from Black Swan said the result was due to the girls’ hard work and commitment to dance. “Not only did the students have a great time performing but they also gained invaluable stage experience which will further their results in the next competition,” she said. One of Beerwah State High School’s Dance Captains, Keely Lister, performed with the Queensland Contemporary Youth Ballet on Friday May 12 in their production of ‘Swan Lake’ at Schonell Theatre, University of Queensland. Keely has been a part of this company for the past two years and was given the honour this year of performing the role of the Black Swan. She has spent her weekends rehearsing for this production on top of her school studies and before and after school rehearsals with the school and her studio. Keely has a strong passion for dance and the school couldn’t be prouder of all her achievements.

Obi the dog The children were really interested in the talks about animal welfare, how we care for animals and when and why they go to the vet. The children were so excited and so engaged with the experience, they could not stop asking questions and wanting to be volunteer helpers for the guests. The program gave the children valuable insight to caring for animals both large and small and they even got to have some hands-on experience with the vet’s dog, Obi. He was a lovely labrador that allowed the children to pet him and also listen to his heart beat through the vet’s stethoscope. The students were amazed when they could hear the heart beating.

From the churches Fr Kevin Smith - Catholic Church In the Catholic tradition one of the most significant celebrations in the life of a parish and indeed in the lives of many families is the celebration of Holy Communion or the Eucharist for the first time. This usually occurs when a child is about eight or nine years of age and after a period of preparation by the child and his/her family. While participation at the Table of the Lord for the first time is the focus of the celebration and the time of preparation, what is essentially taking place is the handing on of faith. Along with the Word of God (the Bible), sacraments and sacramentality are very important in the faith and worship of most Catholics. Celebrating sacraments such as Baptism, Holy Communion and Marriage is a valuable time in which those preparing, whatever their age, can learn more and grow in faith.
Handing on faith can be a bit tricky because ultimately belief in anything is a gift from God, but God uses very basic tools in passing on the message of God’s love for all people. Handing on faith to children involves them, their family and the parish. Rarely in family life is there the opportunity for young people, teenage members and adults to discuss together their questions and hopes that are part of their relationship with God. This occurs with the support of the larger Parish Family who provides resources and prays for everyone involved. We are preparing the child, but hopefully the whole family is blessed as we pass on the Christian message of love. One undeniable truth is that God constantly assures us that we are good enough and have all that it takes to hand on faith and belief to our children. We all have questions. Faith in God and others is tested more often than we would like, but can that justify denying young people the chance to explore a relationship with God? Strongman keeps forging ahead Beerburrum Strongman Tim O’Shea, 39, continued his successful 2017 season with a win in the top division in the second round of the Brisbane Strongman Series on Saturday May 13. After winning Round 1 of the Series in February, Tim took some confidence into Round 2. That confidence was short lived when he performed poorly on the opening event, the squat, and found himself chasing the leaders all day. Some consistent results in the Monster Dumbbell, Strongman Swing and Sled Pull allowed Tim to claw back to within 1.5 points of first position with the final event being the Atlas Stones.
Tim was able to dominate his favourite event, and his win here gave him first position overall in the contest. Tim said, “The New South Welshman, Shane Grierson-Jones, and the youngster, Kayde Bradley, really gave me a scare, but luckily I was able to sneak back into first position with some consistency in the latter part of the contest.” Over thirty people competed at the event, held at Brisbane North Barbell, Brendale. Round 3 is scheduled for September 9.
Podiatrists volunteer to support children in sport Rolled ankles, sore feet and painful blisters were the common theme that podiatrist Carly O’Donoghue had to tackle on Monday, May 15, when she volunteered her expertise at the Queensland Catholic Netball Association Cup held at the Metropolitan Netball Association at Wembley Park in Coorparoo. “When you are playing sport, the comfort and how supportive your feet are in footwear make a major impact on how well you play," Carly said. "Whether it's protecting your feet from blisters,

Beerwah Ladies Golf Club Maleny Bowls Club Contributed by Brenda Briese It's a rather short story this week. Due to the rain on Saturday May 13 we didn't have a ladies competition. (Sooks aren't we!) Thursday, May 18: We invited the men to play. We played a Canadian Foursomes and had a pretty good field of 88 players. The blokes really enjoy these days as it's a bit of fun and we put on morning tea, always a drawcard! The day was very kindly sponsored by Beerwah News. A big thank you to them. We're very fortunate to have local businesses support our club. Winners: Les Hatchman and Carol Cork. R/up: Monica Dangerfield and Marshall Caldwell. 2nd R/up: Peter and Lyn Steele. NTPs (2) and (18) M Dangerfield and M Caldwell, (5) Jennifer Kelly and Doug Young, (16) Geoff and Beth Butler. BRD went to 72.5 nett. We're coming up to the ladies championships in a couple of weeks, so hoping for fine weather. We're counting on good fields to make it competitive, so come on ladies give it a go! Scores were (Range players named first): Ken Barker 26 Theo Kleiberg (recently returned after illness) 2, Donna Manning 26 Cliff Heidenreich 9, and in the doubles Vince Carbery and Nick Cram 9 Theo and Cliff 26. We won the match 2-1. Readers not familiar with our game might be unaware that a score of 26-2 does not mean that one player was thirteen times better than the other, but that one player got the balls distributed in such a way on the lawn that it was possible to pass balls through hoops several times in one turn (time on the lawn). Enjoying perfect autumn weather again on Sunday, Sarah Widin beat Frances Harper 16-9 and Ken, who is playing at the top of his form at the moment, beat Nick 17-9. Thursday brought cloudy skies, but also brought Val Carbery with mallet in hand after a break of several months. She celebrated by beating Sally Adams and Helen Andrews 15-3. Vince, too, had a return to form, pegging out to beat Kath Smith 26-8. Our lawns are located in the Maleny Showgrounds on Stanley River Road. Contributed by Ian Hansen Three Championship Finals matches and one First Round match were played last week. In the Men’s Singles Final, in what some would consider a surprise result not knowing Ian Porter, Ian defeated Peter Duffy 25 shots to 23. Ian, after being down three shots to one after three ends, struck a purple patch and raced to a 13 shot to 6 lead. However, Peter was not done with and fought back to go ahead 17 shots to 13 after 16 ends. They were then tied at 18 apiece and 20 each. A telling 4 shots on the next end gave Ian what looked like a winning margin but Peter then took 3 shots on what proved to be the penultimate end. A single shot on the next end gave Ian victory. Congratulations, Ian. The Ladies Singles Final was won by Jane Burgess over Kay Gesch 26 shots to 21 in what also was probably a bit of a surprise for some. Congratulations, Jane. Unfortunately, I didn’t see the match or get the score card from it so really can’t make any comment. In the Men’s Pairs Final, the old firm of Curley Petersen and Ian Hansen defeated Allan Cook and Graeme Glover 18 shots to 15 in a very close, tense struggle. There was only a couple of shots difference throughout the match. Congratulations, Curley and Ian. A first round match in the Mixed Pairs resulted in a win for Derek Wilson and Kay Gesch 22 shots to 16 over Judith Lees and Doug McGufficke. Derek and Kay led early, but Judith and Doug fought back to level the score at 16 each after 17 ends, but Derek and Kay won the last four ends to win the match. Congratulations, Derek and Kay. For all the losers, there’s always 2018. Tuesday, two rinks of Pairs and one rink of Triples only played 12 ends. The Pairs winners were Charlie Kentland and Kay Gesch with +5 and the Triples winners were Peter Duffy, Lomaine Kentland and Doug McGufficke with +4. The Jackpot wasn’t drawn. Wednesday evening’s winning teams were Amigos, Mobile Kingdom, Cookies, Mighty 10, Handles and Mavericks. The lucky draw winners were: Lead - Judith Lees, Second - Paul Kemp, and Skip - Tom Ukolo. The Touchers went to Ray Spry, Chris Pottinger and Joe Walters. The lucky Money Board winners were Les Fawkes and Allan Cook and the Mystery Raffle winners were Bev Heading, Lyn Hansen and Toni Walters. There were no Bowls Friday and not a solitary Sponsors’ Prize winner was present to claim their winnings. This week there was the Monthly Jackpot Pairs Monday, Jackpot Pairs/Triples Tuesday, the Twilight Challenge Wednesday, Scroungers and the High School Students Friday and Championship Matches Saturday and Sunday. Saturday is the Ladies Pairs Final and the Men’s Triples Final and Sunday the second round of the Mixed Pairs.
