More doors are reopening Well, another week means it is another week closer to things getting back to normal. More of our local venues are keen to share with GC&M News readers about how they have been able to reopen in some way. The volunteers from Friends of Mary Cairncross are really excited to hopefully be getting back into the forest this weekend. We also have featured a story about the lovely small congregation who attend the Lutheran Church in Witta being able to meet up again. A number of our regular local markets, including the weekly Landsborough markets, are now under way. Witta had its first monthly market last weekend, even if it was slightly damp they were able to go ahead, and in July both Crystal Waters and Mapleton will also be kicking off again.
The Beerwah Library reopened a few weeks ago and following Maleny Library’s refurbishment it has also reopened. With the COVID restrictions you aren’t able to sit in the library to read but you are now able to pop in and choose your own books to borrow. Fortunately for parents of little people who are about to go on school holidays many of our local tourist attractions have also been able to reopen their doors/gates and will provide some great alternatives to screen time for kids and their parents/grandparents these holidays. You can check out plenty of options in our school holiday fun guide on pages 16 and 17. Regards,

Local News Design contract announced for Maleny fire station A Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) multipurpose facility in Maleny is a step closer to completion with the design contract awarded to Sunshine Coast Business, Brad Reid Design (BRD). Fire and Emergency Services Minister Craig Crawford was in Maleny on Tuesday to make the announcement of the design contact for the new $5 million facility in Dixon Avenue. The facility will house all three QFES services, including Fire Rescue Service auxiliary firefighters, State Emergency Service (SES) and Rural Fire Service volunteers. Mr Crawford said it is important we start looking to the future of building design and start considering design aspects, such as natural lighting and the orientation of the building to reduce our footprint. Other considerations will be smart lighting controls, zoning for lights and air conditioning, and

QFES Commissioner Greg Leach said he was pleased to see the new facility committed to the region. “This resource will allow our hardworking and dedicated staff and volunteers to continue their important work in our communities,” Mr Leach said. “Building modern facilities ensures the community can feel safe knowing our crews are properly equipped and ready to respond at a moment’s notice.” Construction is expected to commence in late-2020.

Safety upgrades for Steve Irwin Way A new Australian Government infrastructure package will see an injection of $18 million into the Sunshine Coast economy and help bring jobs back through safety upgrades to the Steve Irwin Way. Federal Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace said getting shovels in the ground on local construction projects was critical for maintaining jobs and economic growth on the Sunshine Coast. “On the Sunshine Coast this funding will help support $18 million worth of safety upgrades to the Steve Irwin Way which will

ultimately support 60 jobs,” said Mr Wallace. “Those of us who have lived on the Sunshine Coast for any length of time know that Steve Irwin Way can be a very dangerous stretch. “These much-needed upgrades will get underway by September and should be complete by the middle of next year.” A spokesperson for the Minister for Main Roads Mark Bailey, explained that the funding would be for a road safety package for Steve Irwin Way between Beerburrum and Palmview. Transport and Main Roads (TMR) Department will review of the road corridor to identify safety concerns and then prioritise improvements such as safety barriers, widening of shoulders or centre medium strips, sound motion line markings, turning lanes and removing road side vegetation hazards. Beerburrum quarry decision goes behind closed doors By Greg Brown It’s been three and a half years since the Beerburrum community learnt that Victorian-based quarrying company Barro Group wanted to open a substantial hard rock quarry on the western outskirts of the town, bringing 160 or more trucks a day rumbling through the main street. After a tense development application period, the proposal was overwhelmingly rejected by the Beerburrum locals and by the Sunshine Coast Council at an ordinary meeting in March 2019 (five votes to one). Barro Group lodged a subsequent appeal to the Planning and Environment Court, where the matter has been playing out ever since. However, a closed session is scheduled for the June 25 ordinary meeting of the council, when the matter appears to be the focus of a confidential discussion. Agenda item 11.1 of the meeting
is listed as “CONFIDENTIAL - NOT FOR PUBLIC RELEASE - PLANNING APPEAL – BEERBURRUM”, with a reference made to the planning application number for the quarry (MCU16/0275). Taking the matter into a confidential session means no information on the issues, the discussions relating to the issues or any decisions about the issues are made available to the public. When asked for clarification on the nature of the agenda item, a council spokesperson said that due to it being a Planning and Environment Court appeal matter, no information could be provided at this time on an appeal unless and until council resolves otherwise. “Council can confirm that the report includes information relating to council’s position on an appeal, comments about prospects, approach, its position on the issues and related matters,” the spokesperson said.
If similar past instances are any indication, the decision to shroud the matter in secrecy could possibly signal that a deal has been done to settle the dispute and the closed discussion is to ratify the terms of the settlement. If this is the case, it would be a worrying outcome for the Beerburrum community, who at the time of the dispute, welcomed the robust support of Division 1 councillor Rick Baberowski to champion the charge against the quarry. Transparency in decision making was a campaign staple from many candidates during the March local government elections, with a strong focus placed on the high frequency of closed council sessions and whether this compromised community trust in council processes. Comment was sought from Cr Baberowski on the matter but no response was received.

Kids in Action program recognized as a winner By Sonia Clark The Sunshine Coast Council’s 2019 Kids in Action program has won this years’ partnership category in the recently announced Queensland Reconciliation Awards. Kids in Action (KIA) is a long-running collaborative environmental educational program that encourages school students to engage with and teach each other about environmental themes and projects through support from community mentors and experts.
The program has been run through council since 2012 and this year’s Queensland Reconciliation Award acknowledged the role the 2019 program had in building deeper connections between Sunshine Coast school children and the Jinibara and Kabi Kabi/Gubbi Gubbi First Nations people. Karen Shaw from Forest Heart Nursery has been involved with the program in various roles since its inception through her business Brush Turkey Enterprises. She said it was very exciting

that the council-run program had made such a valuable impact. Karen said the program has always included Indigenous perspectives, which could be explored even more deeply through the program’s theme in 2019, ‘Connecting to Country: Celebrating nature’s icons’, which also tied in with the International Year of Indigenous Languages. “The 2019 theme was very powerful and it encouraged a wonderful exchange of knowledge, cultural practice and language in partnership with traditional custodians, to deliver an amazing environmental education program,” Karen said. “The 2019 program sought to take a more immersive approach, with participating students encouraged to learn Indigenous language and develop an understanding of environmental themes through the lens of Indigenous knowledge, cultural practice and significance to develop deeper connections to the local landscape, plants and animals.” On the Sunshine Coast, 24 schools participated in the program, which included an environmental projects day where traditional custodians led guided tours at culturally significant sites and delivered cultural experience workshops, and a kids-teachingkids annual conference where more than 300 students from across the coast presented projects to their peers that showcased work that had been mentored by Sunshine Coast First Nations people. This year due to COVID-19, the 2020 program ‘We are Botanica’ will be delivered in a revised virtual format with free access provided as part of the council’s Covidkindness campaign. Business News Nail salon keeping clients safe As customers start to return to beauty salons and services, we caught up with Brett Hayball and Sophia Nguyen, owners of I Luv Nails at Beerwah, to find out what changes they made to their business post COVID-19, and also what’s trending with their customers since reopening. Q: What changes have been made to the salon since reopening after the COVID-19 restrictions? A: (Brett and Sophia) We reopened last month with a range of new safety measures in line with our COVID-19 Safety plan, so our customers can feel reassured that we are doing all we can to ensure a safe environment for everyone. We’ve got lots of new safety signage and floor markers in place at 1.5m intervals to ensure correct social distancing. Obviously, all our nail technicians are fully masked when dealing with customers and everything is thoroughly cleaned between beauty services.
We also request that customers use the sanitiser provided upon entry and provide us with contact details. We are also ensuring greater distances between customers by using only three tables out of six, and the same with our massage chairs. So there is always space between customers having their nails done. Q: What has stayed the same? A: (Brett and Sophia): We still have all the same friendly staff and highly skilled nail technicians working with us. We also have worked hard to continue to offer our customers the same relaxing environment and pampering experience as before. Q: What services have been popular? A: SNS, the colour dipping powder, seems to be popular, as well as our manicures and pedicures with hot stone massage. Q: What colour trends are hot right now? A: (Sophia): Purple and grey seem to be very in right now. We are also
seeing more requests for bright and yellow colours. We are also seeing a popular trend of having one nail on each hand (usually the ring finger) done in a different colour like a white, metallic or glitter finish. Pretty glitter colours and pinks have been popular too. For winter we are seeing more requests for the darker statement hues like deep red and burgundy.

Local Rotarian visits India
By Sonia Clark Ilia Starkovsky, a member of the Rotary Club of Glasshouse Mountains, joined a small group of Queensland Rotarians for a two-week travel adventure throughout India in October last year. The 14-day trip was organised by members of the North Brisbane Rotary branch of Redcliffe Sunrise. The group travelled to Delhi, Agra, Jaipur, Udaipur, Goa and Mumbai on the whirlwind visit. Ilia said the group of 12 Queensland Rotarians with wives and friends were fortunate to visit a number of iconic Indian landmarks, monuments and places of interest, including the famous Taj Mahal, Agra Fort and numerous cultural and historically significant sites. As well as sightseeing, the group was invited to meet with fellow Rotarians during visits to Jaipur, Udaipur and Mumbai, and to find out more about locally supported Rotary projects. “The hospitality extended to us from our international counterparts was impressive. We were invited to tour their city and visit their major Rotary project with them – sometimes for a full day,” Ilia said. “This was then followed by a lavish traditional dinner at either their headquarters or hotel, with wonderful food and conversation along with
Indian music and dancing. They were very generous in providing a full cultural experience for us.” For Ilia the visit was also a chance to discover more about India, its people and culture, as well as the opportunity to socialise with other Rotarians and understand more about some of the social initiatives supported by their international members. “Two Rotarian supported projects in particular made a big impression on the visiting Queensland group – the Jaipur Foot, Knee and Limb Prosthetic Clinic and the Alakh Nayan Mandir Eye Institute in Udaipur,” Ilia said. “Both these institutions were world class in their care, with facilities you would expect in any modern first world nation.
“We were very impressed with the professionalism and training of the doctors, and treatments available, as well as the sterility and cleanliness of the hospitals. “The contrast then to step out into the noise and bustle of the street, and to step over sleeping people was quite apparent – but as a visiting group we were blown away by the absolutely first-class facilities that were helping many people in need,” Ilia said. As a photographer Ilia was impressed by the colour and vibrancy of the people and places

The general friendliness and politeness of people throughout the country also impressed Ilia, and he said he felt very safe and secure throughout the guided journey. He said everywhere he went people were very respectful.
As a photographer he said he loved the opportunity to capture the vibrancy and colour of India, as well as the chance to immerse himself in the incredibly rich cultural heritage, architecture and art of the ancient civilisation. “I tried to learn a few words of the language while I was there and to make sure I always asked people respectfully first before taking a photo, which seemed very appreciated. “No one refused to have their photo taken. It was a very culturally interesting and dynamic place, filled with a myriad of visual contrasts and colour,” Ilia said. He estimates he took more than 1,200 photos during his visit. He found India a visually exciting country that produced a number of stunning photos. It was a highly memorable trip and he was grateful for the opportunity to participate.

Also, it was reported in 1919 that a second wave of the Spanish Influenza was feared and too much caution could not be taken. It sounds familiar, doesn’t it? But just as our early residents discovered, epidemics do pass and life slowly returns to normal. It was a wet but happy Sunday on June 14 when the doors to Witta’s historic Lutheran Church were reopened for worship services.

Following the Queensland Government’s relaxation of COVID-19 restrictions, the small congregation could meet once again in person by following all public health directions. Long-time member Narelle Thamm said it was “a great feeling it was to walk back into God’s house and be in fellowship with all our members”. “It was a joy to see some faces I hadn’t seen much of in recent times,” Narelle said. Narelle is one of Witta’s talented musicians and also plays for St George’s Anglican Church, Maleny. Usually on an electronic keyboard, Narelle ended Witta’s service with the uplifting hymn of ‘Now thank we all our God’ on the old pump organ. During the government’s suspension of all church worship services, Pastor Maurie Richter of Nambour posted weekly Facebook video messages, the congregation’s prayer group used phone conferencing and Zoom was

Another benefit of the regular use of technology is that some grandparents can now confidently connect with grandchildren living at a distance. Witta Lutheran Church chairman Phil Thamm said the church wasn’t the only one to quickly learn new ways. “Churches on the range worked hard to share information on how to keep people connected; and combined resources to provide financial support to the chaplains of Maleny’s primary and high schools who were best placed to know of families in need,” Phil said. “It’s great to see people adapting to changing circumstances and, I believe, COVID-19 has seen a resurgence of neighbour helping neighbour, which can only bring good to our community. This virus isn’t over yet but I suspect that some things will not return to normal and that is all for the better,” he said.

Jesus Christ prayed for you this morning and He will be praying for you this evening as well. In fact, He even prays through us, in our prayers. In this so-named ‘high priestly’ prayer, Jesus prayed for you the night before His death on the cross. He prayed for you in the upper room, then He went out into the night for His betrayal, His arrest, His trial and death – His death for you, for the forgiveness of sins. But first He prayed that night for all those who would believe in Him because of the message of the apostles and for His whole church through the ages. He prayed not for our own personal desires but for the church’s life – that the world might believe – the whole hurting, yearning, dying
world. God’s peace and comfort is given to us, all found in the Lord of life who gave Himself into death, to free us all from the bondage of sin, death and hell. Winter Blues drive-in concert Contributed by Paulette Steele It’s back to the days of drive-ins but we’re not showing ‘Back to the Future’! This is about having live blues music at the Maleny Showgrounds on Saturday, July 18 from 5pm until about 9.15pm. The Rotary Club of Maleny is very excited to support our great local musicians who haven’t received any income for months. It will give the local community of Maleny a big boost as all profits will go to our community grants scheme, which provides support to many local organisations. The line-up of local musical acts include: Kevin Borich Express - this guy needs no introduction as he is a rock god and the band perform at many festivals. Vix & the Slick Chix (pictured) - well known in South East Queensland for their blues, funk, soul and rock music, they have played at numerous festivals and regularly appear at Rick’s Garage and the Maleny Hotel. The Spirit Blues Band - ran the Woombye Blues Club for several years and performed at the inaugural Maleny Festival, which became the current Woodford Festival. Living - Arts Local artist’s exhibition back on show
The Caloundra Regional Gallery’s reopening last week will allow culture vultures, art lovers, or anyone wanting to wander through an exhibition of international brilliance to have the opportunity to see the stunning Johanna DeMaine: the form, the function, the aesthetic exhibition that had to close early due to COVID-19 restrictions. Landsborough artist Johanna DeMaine’s highly sought after artworks are held in private and public collections both nationally and internationally, including the British and Danish Royal family collections. The exhibition, covering five decades of practice, includes early functional ware, the decorative and ornamental, through to recent works incorporating new techniques and imagery that combine the influences of the Sunshine Coast and Japan. Community portfolio councillor Rick Baberowski was relieved to see the gallery reopening to provide the community with access to exhibitions once again. “The gallery team has done a remarkable job in continuing to provide our community and local arts sector with creative inspiration online during the lockdown,” Cr Baberowski said. “As good and as important as the digital creativity has been, nothing duplicates experiencing DeMaine’s wonderful work in person and I am personally very much looking forward to visiting the gallery again. I encourage all who can to push it to the top of their to-do list.” The gallery will be open Wednesday–Friday, 10am-2pm, and will welcome 20 visitors at any one time.

Photographing with your phone Years ago I read the line: “The best camera is the one that’s with you” (Chase Jarvis) and it struck a chord. As much as I love my professional camera gear, it can get heavy and unwieldy and I don’t take it everywhere I go. The technology available in phone cameras these days is really impressive. I even took a trip to Japan with the challenge of only photographing with my phone. What surprised me was not just the quality but the different type of images I took due to the ease of whipping a device out of my pocket. Let there be light Do yourself a favour and switch off the flash. Only use it in absolute emergencies as it creates harsh shadows and strong highlights. As always, early morning and late afternoon light is the most flattering but if you’re shooting in the middle of the day try to use it to your advantage. Does the light create interesting shadows? Does the midday sun make the leaves on a tree glow?
Find your focus Each phone is different but some phone cameras will allow you to choose the focus (and sometimes exposure) area by clicking on your screen. If you have an older phone or one that doesn’t have this product development, there are many camera apps available that can enhance its capabilities. Get down low or up high … I’m not as tall as I’d like to be or as flexible as I used to be. Taking photos on a phone allows me to get different angles easier than climbing on a ladder or lying on the ground like I would need to with my professional gear. Have fun and look at the world from a different perspective.

Zoom, zoom, zoom? Did you know that there are two types of zooms - optical and digital? Optical zoom is performed by your lens and currently is only available on some phones. If you have this available, it’s great to use. Digital zoom is done via the software in your device but reduces the quality of your image. If this is your only option, you often get a sharper result from not zooming in but rather cropping the image later. There are also a wide range of add-on lenses available for your phone these days. Some are just for a bit of fun but others are a much larger investment and can do amazing things. I have loved Moment brand lenses in the past.

We've had such a great response to last month's call out for readers' pet photos that we've decided to feature more of them next week.

Glass House Mountains State School In June 1905 a meeting was called by residents of what was then called Glass Mountains about establishing a school in the area. Some difference of opinion had arisen as to the location but eventually Mr W Burgess selected the site where the school exists today. Local sources indicate that following the acceptance by the Queensland Education Department of an amended list of proposed pupils, tenders for the building were called in December 1905. Mr W Sanderson’s tender of 96 pounds 15 shillings won the bid for his 21 x 14 foot (6.4 x 4m) building, and 7 foot (2m) verandah. On March 26, 1906, the inspector of works reported that the school numbered 1095 was ready to open. Miss Gertrude Letitia Corkran was appointed the first head teacher of the Glass Mountains Provisional School, which opened on April 17, 1906. The school had nine students attend on the first day - Wilfred Hare, Albert Hare, James Hare, John Dalton, Arthur Reed, Owen Reed, Evelyn Dalton, Lilian Dalton and Alice Hare.

In the Queensland Government Gazette of June 1935, the name of the town Glass Mountains was altered to Glass House Mountains and the name of the school was altered accordingly. At the school’s 75th jubilee celebration held in 1981, original pupils Owen Reed and Alice Morgan (nee Hare) attended as special guests of honour. The school marked its centenary celebrations in 2006. Additional information from local sources including Glass House Mountains State School Centenary Book 1906-2006.

Following a visit later that month, the Education Department district inspector Mr Gripps approved the reopening. On October 31, 1910 the Glass Mountains School was reopened as a state school on the same site with the new number 1242. It was great last week to get back to the Beerwah Pub and sit outside to enjoy a tasty lunch. The team at the pub have the whole COVID Safe process working really smoothly, with set numbers of customers being able to sit in set locations. Your orders are taken at your table and the staff even have their own machine for tapping your card as you make your choice. The pub once again has an extensive range of choices, and after only cooking pizza at home for the past few months it was great to try out
their really tasty seafood pizza. Don’t forget if you want to head to the pub you will need to call and make a booking first, and they no longer offer a take-away service. We phoned just half an hour before we wanted to go and they were able to accommodate us, which was great.

I recently met a very kind lady Carol Baker, part owner of Mooloolah Post Office. After asking Carol to accept my books on consignment at the post office she generously offered to purchase them. Woo hoo, that is such a boost for an author, so a big thank you Carol. ‘Silvery Moon’ is our little book written through the paws of Silver, a loved 20-year-old cat. Silver strayed into our lives with signs of being tortured and over time grew to love us and trust us through her acts of forgiveness. She blended into our family and bought joy to all her met her. In this short true story, she comes to life.
How to get a park
It was recently reported in another newspaper that a resident who went public about decrepit Kolora Park in Palmwoods received “emails of support from at least a dozen residents on his side of town who have lived in the area for at least 20 years”. As a result and to his great credit, Cr Winston Johnston has promised to begin restoring the park to its former glory. Our campaign to try to get a decent park on the Maleny Precinct elicited nearly 300 signatures in a matter of hours when it was launched impromptu in Maleny’s main street more than two years ago. Dozens of personal acclamations were posted online and makes for moving reading after

Landsborough sports fields upgrade with Rick Baberowski
Division 1 Sunshine Coast Council With COVID-19 restrictions continuing to ease, I’m sure many of us are looking forward to seeing community sport back up and running soon. The downtime has allowed council to work with the community management team at Landsborough to complete a range of infrastructure upgrade projects. In addition to new field fencing and carpark resurfacing, the project has achieved a significantly increased playing surface for the junior sports field and I expect the teams will get a welcome surprise when they return to the sportsground and give the expanded field a try. Car park upgrade Construction is well under way at the Pioneer Park car park in Caloundra Street, Landsborough to deliver safety improvements through a more formalised design. Works will coincide with the school holiday break so I encourage visitors to this particularly popular all-abilities park to please show patience and park with safety front of mind. Go on an adventure these holidays Enjoy some family time in the great outdoors these holidays and search Adventure Sunshine Coast (https://adventure.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au) for a walk, ride or paddle to explore this magnificent part of the Sunshine Coast. Why not try the Woodgrove Circuit in Beerwah, a fairly informal, family-friendly walk starting from the Woodgrove play area through the Upper Coochin Creek Environmental Reserve and back. Or the Soldier Settlers’ Loop starting at the new trail head at Beerburrum, a mostly flat circuit that takes in the old Beerburrum Cemetery, views of Mt Tibrogargan and native birdlife.

In the Garden Jobs for the yard in July Take hardwood cuttings of deciduous plants (15-30cm) and insert deeply in garden soil. Those that ‘take’ can be planted out next autumn. After the risk of frost is over, prune passionfruit vines of unwanted growth, mulch and water well. Prune the vine by cutting all laterals (shoots coming from the main stem) back to two buds. Control scale on citrus by spraying with a pest oil and band the trees with grease or sticky barriers to stop ants (which spread scale). Plant new rose trees. Winter pruning of roses can happen in July. On old fashioned roses you only need to remove unsightly and dead branches. Climbers need to be pruned after they flower in spring. Modern bush and standard roses are pruned fairly hard each July. Cut the water suckers to the ground (shooting from below the union). If you want to shift rose bushes and deciduous plants, do it in July.

Lift dahlia tubers and store in sawdust. Break up clumps of day lily. Break up clumps of chives or shallots and replant plump offsets. Sow a green crop (lupin, vetch, broad bean) in a vacant bed to add nitrogen and humus to the soil (dig it in just before it flowers, and plant vegetables six weeks later). Treat your lawn for bindii as soon as it appears. Any of the broadleaf lawn herbicides, such as ‘bindii and clover killer’ will do, or pull them out if there’s only scattered plants.
Plant offshoots of crucifix orchids. Squash caterpillars visible on foliage (rather than spray ones you can’t see). Look underneath as well as on top. Plant potatoes, sweet potatoes and shallots in the vegetable garden.

Reduce watering of house plants but watch out for dry spots in the garden
Give your cabbage, cauliflower and broccoli a boost and feed them some sulphate of ammonia.
Garden tools serve you best if looked after. Store them together in a dry place, sandpaper wooden handles occasionally and rub in raw linseed oil. Grease metal axels of wheelbarrows. Keep cutting implements sharp. Get lawnmower serviced. Fertilise citrus trees using 125g of fertiliser per year of growth, up to 1.25kg per tree.

with Spencer Shaw Not sure if it’s the cooler weather or the regular rainfall, but after the long hot dry summer I’m enjoying planting lots of plants again and they are thriving in the moist soils and gentler temperatures. We’re often asked, “when is the best time to plant here?”, to which I’d generally answer, “In SE QLD it’s always a good time to plant!” - but then again, we are selling you plants! But seriously, the trick to successful plant establishment is to avoid the extremes e.g. heat, flood, frost - these extremes are the main limiting factors to when you can plant successfully. For example if you live in a frost prone area, then now is not the best time to plant frost sensitive plants, but many plants aren’t frost sensitive due to their own natural anti-freeze. Also luckily the majority of the coast and parts of the hinterland are unlikely to suffer from damaging frosts. Which leads me back to the benefits of planting right now. The cooler weather is great to be outdoors and enjoying the health and wellbeing benefits of gardening and working on the land. Planting now is gentler on the plants, with good moisture and less heat stress. Establishing plants in autumn, allows plants to prepare for spring and summer and so you can then enjoy the fruits of your labour from the shade of your veranda (or tree you planted 5 years ago!). Plant today and reap the rewards in the months and years to come.

All games were close with Bev and Gillian winning the first two 7–5, 7–5. In the final game Wallace and Priscilla fought back to take the game 7-6. On lawn one Donna Manning and Vince Carbery played a game of association croquet with Donna taking the honours 11–8.
