Residents and visitors to the Glass House Mountains region may see an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) flying over pine plantations in local state forests this week. The fixed-wing UAV, operated by locally based Ninox Robotics, has a 2.75m wingspan and looks like a small aeroplane. The UAV will capture high resolution aerial imagery of young plantations for HQPlantations. Operating under a commercial UAV licence granted by CASA, the remotely piloted UAV will be flown near Landsborough, Beerwah, Glass House Mountains and Woodford Monday-Friday, July 22-26. HQPlantations resource information manager Lee Stamm said the data obtained from the surveys would allow HQPlantations to optimise the management of the crop. Previously the company purchased generic aerial survey photography from local government taken by light aircraft.

Plantation health is important to the region as almost all the timber harvested locally is processed at the AKD sawmill in Caboolture and is used in local residential and commercial construction. All areas where trees are harvested are then replanted in a continuous cycle that makes wood the ultimate renewable.

Crime in our area
Did you know that the Mooloolah IGA was broken into two weeks ago, with the four brazen thieves getting away with cash, charity donations, cigarettes and soft drinks? The same night a business in Landsborough was broken into with a safe ransacked and cash stolen. Due to a recent increase in business break-ins, the Queensland Police Sunshine Coast district is reminding locals to keep business security in mind and have suggested some security tips. • When locking up and leaving your business, be aware of your surroundings. • Are there any suspicious vehicles in the area? • Are there any people loitering around the shop or has anyone been doing so during business hours? • Consider placing warning signs around your business to deter intruders such as ‘no cash kept on premises’. • Ensure there is clear visibility inside and outside your business through the use of good lighting. • If applicable, keep shrubs and trees trimmed to prevent concealment of the premises. • Protect windows and doors by installing security screens. • Consider using deadlocks and solid doors. • Consider reinforcing glass doors with shatter resistant film. • Consider installing a safe that is always locked and anchored to the floor and wall of the premises. • Limit cash kept on premises. • Install CCTV cameras. Specialists to the (remote) rescue It won’t come as any surprise to locals in the Glass House Mountains that the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) remote rescue technicians, who undertake rescues in isolated and mountainous locations across the state, have attended about 120 remote rescues locally in the past three years. These include 60 rescues in 2017 and 49 in 2018, which was the highest number in the state and took place at popular tourist walking and hiking tracks at Mt Tibrogargan, Mt Ngungun and Mt Beerwah. QFES undertook its first two remote rescue pilot courses in August and September 2016 with 11 technicians trained in the North Coast region and five in the Brisbane region. Fire and Emergency Services Minister Craig Crawford said the technicians’ work was important as firefighters were called when there was no access to a casualty without specialist climbing and vertical rescue skills.

“Walkers, hikers and climbers who are underprepared or exceed their capability, people who are lost, ill or injured due to a fall are the people QFES remote rescue technicians are called to help,” Mr Crawford said. The technicians conduct search and rescue operations and often need to rescue and carry patients on stretchers over long distances in bushland or steep inclines. SES volunteers continue to provide vital support alongside technicians and can assist in performing these rescues. QFES acting commissioner Mike Wassing said remote rescue technicians, while already highly trained, were continuously furthering their abilities through regular training in remote rescue techniques. “If someone is trapped or stranded in difficult terrain, our technicians use their climbing and vertical rescue abilities to reach and rescue them safely,” Mr Wassing said. “Their knowledge and vertical rescue skills, like abseiling and climbing, also means they can access people who may be stranded or trapped at a height or down an embankment. “When technicians reach a person they can perform first aid and provide care if required, often in an isolated area, before they can be taken to safety.” Mr Wassing said remote rescue technicians knew the ins and outs of common hiking, climbing and walking areas and encouraged people to know the basics before heading on an outdoor adventure.

Ngungun track closure extended
The current major upgrade by Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) of the Mt Ngungun summit track at Glass House Mountains has been extended.
“QFES has this great ability to rescue people but it is important people take every step possible to ensure they won’t need our help,” he said. “Walkers, hikers and climbers should know the area they are planning to visit, understand how easy or difficult the terrain might be and always take the right equipment.” Mr Wassing said it was most important that walkers, hikers and climbers evaluated their personal ability to undertake these activities before they started to ensure they did not become the person that needed rescuing from our mountain areas. “Before leaving they should check the weather and remember not to enter steep terrain if it is wet or rain is forecast. “They should also tell someone where they are going, how long they will be and stick to the planned route,” he said. Work on the upgrade started on April 8 this year with an initial projected completion date of July 27. With much higher than average rainfall and prolonged wet weather through May and June, it is anticipated that the track will be closed until Saturday, August 31. In order to complete the works as quickly as possible, visitor access will be restricted for the duration of the works. All tracks, firebreaks and entry points will be closed to public access during this time. QPWS thanks visitors for their patience and apologises for any inconvenience. As an alternative, visitors are advised to use the extensive trail network at the nearby Tibrogargan section of the Glass House Mountains National Park. Signs and barriers are in place at the car park on Fullertons Road. For your safety, please obey all signs and directions from authorised officers on site and do not enter closed areas.

An historic hit for 80 years in Glass House Ninety people from across the generations came together on Saturday, July 13 to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the building that is now home to the Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre. This historic milestone event gave the quaint building a new lease of life. The hall was filled with people reconnecting and sharing stories of their times in the building. Uncle Alan Parsons opened with a welcome to country and Neighbourhood Centre president Carolyn Roberts gave an historic account of the building over the past 80 years. Cr Rick Baberowski gave Lisa Malcom, a speech of support, Natasha Odgers and calling buildings such Uncle Alan Parsons as this as “an anchor of communities”.

All sang happy birthday to the building when a big cake, generously donated by CJ’s Bakery, was cut and shared to mark the occasion. Original member of the Neighbourhood Centre, Joan Young, did the honours of cutting the Joan Young cutting anniversary cake. cake A highlight of the event was the newly formed choir of the Neighbourhood Centre, who filled the width of the building with men and women singing their hearts out. The choir wore blue ribbons to honour the original choir who sang in the building. Photos, memorabilia and a memoir book were on display for guests to get a glimpse of the past occasions held in the building. Many people reunited over Devonshire tea and scones and stayed on for the lunch stalls.

Chaplaincy - High school’s safe haven
Contributed by Rhona Pelluchon April was quite upset as she walked to school on a winter’s morning trying to make sense of what was happening with her family and friends. Nothing made sense … she was even questioning the existence of her own life. She felt that she had no one to turn to and then a friend suggested she should speak with the school chaplain about how she felt. Her life changed that day after speaking with the chaplain. She felt that she had someone to turn to without being judged. It was a safe haven for her in a moment of time when she needed to get some clarity and direction towards her adult life. April’s situation is typical of what faces a number of students at our schools every day and Maleny High is no exception. It’s comforting to know that a chaplain can be an important part of supporting students like April. Micah Jones, our new Maleny State High School chaplain, has a background as a youth pastor in Brisbane along with extensive language teaching experience over many years in schools in Vietnam. The hinterland community has demonstrated its support for chaplaincy in the past, reflecting the value placed on this service. On Wednesday, July 31 a chappy vintage tea will be held at The Orangery Maleny to raise funds to support Micah in his role as chaplain at MSHS. Come along to meet and hear from our local chaplain while enjoying a decadent morning tea. Maleny Youth Festival is back
The Maleny Flexi School, in partnership with Boab Dreaming Solutions and the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre, is keen to get local young people involved in the sixth annual Maleny Youth Festival planned for Friday, September 13. The festival, which also marks the 20th anniversary of the Maleny Flexi School, will recognise students, staff and volunteers who have contributed to this learning community over the past two decades. Boab Dreaming Solutions CEO Lyndal Regent said the theme the students had chosen this year was the Day of the Dead, which gives them the opportunity to come together and celebrate all that has gone before, all that is and all that will be. “This year, we will have a fantastic line up of bands, live entertainment, workshops, fortune telling, stalls and food stands,” Lyndal said. “We have invited Youth Support Services to come and be a part of the event to deepen their connection in the hinterland community. “Last year we were humbled by the support from the community and their presence. This year we celebrate with students past and present, and call on the community to once again come and enjoy the day and help us make this our best event yet,” she said. The future of community newspapers
By Lea Parkes A couple of weeks ago in my column I talked about how different the world of community newspapers is these days compared to when we took over what was then Glasshouse Country News back in 2004. At that time the newspaper was A4 size, we basically printed in black and white with full colour on the cover, and the centre pages were for Laurie Evans real estate. The newspaper was delivered tightly rolled in plastic and was thrown into people’s yards. Just after we bought the business, we did a survey via the newspaper and by interviewing people at the Beerwah Marketplace to get as much feedback as possible about what readers liked/loved or, in some cases, loathed about the paper. I am sure some readers from that time won’t be surprised to know that one of the biggest issues was not about the newspaper’s content but about how the paper was delivered! Readers found it too hard to first get the plastic

off and then difficult to flatten out before you could even begin to read it. It wasn’t too long before we introduced a raft of changes to the paper, including the newspaper being printed on newsprint in full colour. We also changed the delivery so that papers were inserted into loose bags for delivery, and we eventually transitioned to letterbox delivery for about 90% of our delivery area. Over almost 15 years we have had many changes, not just to our delivery approach. We have continued to expand our delivery, change the content, evolve the format and generally try to keep up with what is happening in our industry. Since 2011 we have been creating an online version of the newspaper and for the past few years we have also been uploading the paper via our Facebook page each week. A couple of years ago the federal government announced the Regional and Small Publishers Innovation Fund, which offered a competitive grants program to support regional and small

publishers to transition to and compete more successfully in the evolving media environment. We decided to apply for a grant to assist us in conducting research to get a better understanding of GC&M News readers’ attitudes, behaviours and expectations regarding accessing news about their local community into the future. GC&M News was one of only two small Queensland community newspapers that successfully received grant funding, so we are keen to see it well used to help us make the best decisions for continuing to bring local news to you into the future, in a way that works best for everyone. The survey has been designed to take around 10 minutes to complete. We genuinely appreciate you taking the time to share your views, and for those of you who don’t want to complete the survey online a hard copy will be printed in the July 31 and August 7 editions of GC&M News and we will pay for the cost of posting it back. Community Groups Country music charity concert Contributed by Juanita Owen The Velvet Country Music Club of Caloundra is holding its seventh annual charity concert on Sunday, August 4 from 11.30am at the Uniting Church hall, 56 Queen Street, Caloundra. We are having a guest artist, Rosanna Ruddick, a multi-award winning artist and a most sought after artist on the coast. She has just released her fifth CD, ‘Classis Country’. Rosanna has performed nationally and in New Zealand. She is always ready to help out with fundraisers when requested. She has performed a number of concerts including for the Relay for Life Cancer Research, a charity close to her heart. Everyone is invited to come along, have some fun, win some great raffle prizes and enjoy our walk up artists who perform with our very talented band for backing music. Over the past six years we have been able to donate $32,000 to multiple charities, which includes Life Flight, Ronald McDonald and Dove Cottage.
This year we are donating once again to Dove Cottage Palliative Care Unit Caloundra. Many people locally would have had some association with this facility. It provides care for end of life illness for both patient and family, and what a marvellous job they do. The birthing kits are a collection of essential items to ensure the health and survival of mothers and their babies in developing countries.

The women attending shared stories with one recalling the story of a woman in Bhutan who had given birth in a field, only to continue her work with the newborn baby strapped to her back. The volunteers pondered how fortunate we are in Australia to have proper medical support and they hoped to be able to continue this essential task for many years to come. The group made swift work, with many volunteers having participated in the annual birthing kit assembly for several years. After a tea break with delicious offerings and a welcome opportunity to sit in the warm sunshine outside, the kits were quickly finished and packed in large boxes ready to be shipped.

Rotary grants open for local community groups Eight local community organisations received a total of almost $7,500 last year as part of the inaugural Rotary Club of Glasshouse Mountains grants program. The program was so well received and the results achieved so beneficial that Rotary decided to open the grants up again, according to club secretary Ian Hope. “2018 was the first year we offered these grants. We were pleased that we were able to consider a diverse range of projects from many different organisations in Glasshouse Country,” Ian said. “There were applications from a school P&C looking at managing bullying in the school to assisting the Peachester History Committee with enhancing their historical display facilities. “Consequently, we were able to assist the successful organisations with their needs to improve our community.” The 2018 recipients were the Believe subcommittee of the Landsborough State School P&C Association ($1,000); Mooloolah River Waterwatch and Landcare Inc ($800); Peachester History Committee Inc ($1,000); Beerwah Sportsground Management Committee Inc ($1,000); QCWA Inc Beerwah branch ($790); Landsborough Area Community Association Inc ($883.50); Landsborough School of Arts Memorial Hall Association Inc ($1,000); and Celebrate Glasshouse Country Inc ($1,000). The Boomerang Bags Beerwah group was excited to have a visit at the last working bee from journalist Katie Toney from Seven Local News, who was keen to hear all about the group and the ethos behind Boomerang Bags. The Beerwah CWA ladies and other volunteers from the group were thrilled to be featured in the local legends segment. The Beerwah CWA hosts monthly working bees for the Beerwah Boomerang Bags group and anyone interested in participating is invited to come along for a fun morning helping to stem the tide of single use plastic in the local community. Sewing skills are not essential as there is cutting fabric and ironing to be done as part of the whole process. With Charne Turner This week the typical sunny weather of July has made the rainforest reserve glow after the rain of the previous month. Misty mornings and sparkling days have enticed the winter birds to warble and fantastic fungi to feature. Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve is a great place to visit any time. The dedicated Education Centre volunteers have been kept busy interpreting the sights and sounds of the forest for the many visitors over the school holidays. Eight new volunteers were recently inducted and regular induction courses are run to meet the demand of staffing the Education Centre for eight hours a day, 363 days a year. For the past three years, FMCA has awarded a scholarship to a student of the University of the Sunshine Coast in environmental research that will benefit the rainforest. The 2019 winner of the scholarship is a Bachelor of Science (Honours) student, Dylan Westaway. His research focuses on the distribution of night birds namely the sooty, powerful and masked owls, and the marbled frogmouth. He is exploring the relationship between human land use and the presence/absence of these nocturnal predators within the Sunshine Coast and hinterland, including the Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve. Dylan will present his findings to FMCA later in the year, which should be a hoot. Anyone interested in joining FMCA the cost is just $10 per year and you can pick up a form at the Education Centre. The next general meeting and AGM will be on October 19 at 10am at the centre. The Friends of Mary Cairncross Association aims to protect and enhance the natural environment of the Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve. You Said It Glasshouse Country cricketing history GC&M News regularly features Flashback Friday on our Facebook page where we share past stories from our pages. However, we recently received this snippet from a local from before GC News’ time, when local news was reported by the Nambour Chronicle. This article was from 50 years ago in August 1969 and highlights the merging of cricket teams from Landsborough and Beerwah, with the headline ‘Cricket teams combine' and formed the Southern Districts Cricket Club. If anyone was involved with this meeting and can provide more details we would love to be able to share more of the story.

Landsborough rail/overpass upgrade
There has been a lot of speculation as to the plans TMR has regarding the Landsborough rail upgrade and the overpass. Attempts to meet with TMR representatives have been unsuccessful in the past. However, some members of Landsborough Area Community Association Inc, who were told they were directly impacted by the rail upgrade, had a meeting with the TMR recently and were told the following: • There is no set plan or place decided on for the overpass at this point. When there is, the Landsborough community will be notified and will have the opportunity to have input. • There is $550 million committed to the project. This will not cover everything. TMR will do as much as possible with the available $550 million. • The funded project is for Beerburrum to Landsborough. Landsborough to Nambour will be done when more funding is available. • The bend in the rail track near Morris House in Old Landsborough Road will not be removed. • The Gympie Street North crossing is not included. • The overpass is to avoid the previous (existing) Caloundra Street crossing. • The first part of the work will start with the Beerburrum car park. • The Y shaped train turnaround siding at Landsborough station (see image below) will be preserved due to its heritage listing but how this will be done is not yet worked out. • The proposed car park on the eastern side of the town will have approximately 240 parks. This land will be needed for use during construction so the car park will not be done until the Y is relocated and the land is not needed for the construction process. • Surveying has already started – TMR said this is to give them reference points. • No date has yet been set for actual work to commence. • Anyone wishing to speak with TMR can access the project people by email at B2N@tmr.qld.gov.au. Where do our politicians come from?
We have a Prime Minister who gives money away to outside countries, willy-nilly, like Samoa where he recently visited and announced $250 million for them while Australia is in terrible trouble with no water. Our rivers, lakes and dams are empty. Haven’t our politicians ever heard of a chap called Bradfield, a civil engineer who suggested a genuine fix back in the 1930s. He had a lot to do with a road and two bridges that are still standing and icons. It has been said that the Ord River Scheme in Western Australia is able to supply the whole of Australia with water. Monsoonal rains in the top of Queensland can be harvested and sent down to look after our western rivers via the Thomson River. It can, at the same time, get Lake Eyre back to capacity. It is also known that even salt water taken out of the ocean will not only purify itself over a distance, it will also drop the salt and leave drinking water in its place. Then there is the Water Minister, a bloke named David Littleproud. What qualifications does he possess? This fella wants to fix the problem with the Murray-Darling basin but he needs to fix the top first to allow water to flow and actually get there. Our local bloke, Andrew Wallace, knows about the water problems. He also knows and has heard of Mr Bradfield. How about stepping up to the plate, make this work, get Australia back on track. We lived off the sheep’s back for years and, believe it or not, they are on the way back but they and the humans need water. Think about Australia for a change, put us first. Clouds Vineyard Cafe a real delight
In recent ads GC&M News has run for the Clouds Vineyard Maleny Café at the Big Barrel, they promote all day breakfast, lunch, dine in, take away, beautiful gardens and easy parking. Having visited quite a few times I can confirm that all of these things are absolutely true! My favourite café items are all found on a breakfast menu, so my idea of heaven is somewhere that serves an all-day breakfast. I recently enjoyed the eggs benedict (hold the hollandaise sauce), with warm smoked salmon and a side order of haloumi and it was totally delicious. Brownie can confirm that the braised lamb is also a great choice for a lovely tasty warm lunch on one of these cold winter days without being too hearty. Our mates who tried some of the other lunch menu options agreed that the unusual mix of flavours, textures and colours (I am pretty sure these are what the MasterChef judges talk about) all make some very satisfying choices as well. I can’t say that I have ordered off the kids menu, but I have checked it out and there are some great choices for those 12 years and under, all priced up to $10. Parking and access to the cafe is very easy. The gardens surrounding the buildings are being lovingly tendered and are looking wonderful. So I reckon they definitely have something that will impress everyone!

These reviews are undertaken every four years and are conducted by the Department of Education’s School Improvement Unit (SIU). The review looks at the strategies and programs the school has in place and evaluates their value and effectiveness as well as providing the school with recommendations for the future. Contributed by Kate Burnett It’s no secret that movement is an important part of education. At Peachester State School we take movement seriously, allowing our students time to explore the beautiful bushland and gardens on the school grounds. In term two we brought movement into our curriculum, partnering with Footsteps Dance Students dance performance Company, an age-based movement program designed to enhance social skills, confidence and creativity. Each Monday for four consecutive weeks, our prep to year 6 students learned various individual and partnered dances, coordinating movements and finetuned their gross motor skills. The final lesson ended with a special performance for parents where the children showcased their hip hop, funk and modern pop moves in front of their biggest fans. A special thank you to Footsteps Dance Company who inspired and encouraged our students to give dancing a go, learn a new skill and have lots of fun.

In just one generation, the average Australian childhood has shifted from a largely outdoors, active, independent, social, community-oriented play to a mostly indoors, sedentary, technologically immersed, highly structured, fearful and riskaverse play space. Nature Play Queensland has been established to provide opportunities for children to spend time in unstructured play outdoors. The organisation has created ‘The Neighbourhood Play Project’, a documentary that explores the issue, looks at ways to help activate local communities and how to invite kids back out into the neighbourhood to play. The documentary will be screened at Landsborough State School hall on Friday, August 2 at 3.30–6.30pm for interested community members. Nature Play Queensland manager Hyahno Moser will attend the screening to share resources for activating our local neighbourhoods as play spaces and to answer any questions from parents. The event is suitable for the whole family and there will be some organised activities for kids if they don't want to watch to film. Light refreshments will be available. Fuelling bodies and minds with healthy food choices Glass House Early Education Centre strongly believes in encouraging healthy food choices. As part of this commitment, the centre provides a daily menu of wholesome age-appropriate food prepared by the Healthy Cooking Company to encourage young children (and their families) to eat well. Best of all for parents, these wholesome food options are all included in the daily fees. Centre coordinator Keosha Lougesen explained that as well as having a strong nutritional focus, the daily menu is also prepared to suit the specific developmental needs of each age group. “For example, we offer organic baby cereal, fruit and puree on the nursery room menu while our older children love our selection of seasonal meals including finger food options,” Keosha said. “We want the children to be excited about healthy food choices, so we change the menu weekly, offer a wide selection of colours and textures that look and taste appealing, all the while fuelling their bodies and minds”. Believing that introducing nutritious meals at an early age will pave the road to a lifetime of healthy food choices, Glass House Early Education Centre follows the philosophy of parent company

Queensland Childcare Services, which supports the idea that children develop their tastes and attitudes about food and nutrition in their early years. All meals prepared by the Healthy Cooking Company contain minimal sodium and refined sugar and are made without the use of nuts and eggs to ensure the safety of children who experience severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis) to these products. The food is preservative-free as well as being free from artificial colours and flavours. Meals catered by the Healthy Cooking Company are all planned and prepared by their qualified chefs and dietitian using locally sourced fruit and vegetables from local suppliers. All meals are based on a balanced wholefood diet. Special dietary or cultural needs are catered for wherever possible and vegetarian, gluten-free and dairy-free alternatives are available. As well as providing meals for the children, centre families are also able to preorder take home family meals online – which has proven to be a popular option.
Glass House Early Education Centre coordinator Keosha says that the benefits of healthy food choices is always actively encouraged at the centre. Educators regularly discuss the importance of healthy eating with the older children and always look to incorporate educational opportunities to reinforce these values. Planting seeds and cooking activities that highlight the importance (and yummy taste) of wholesome food are always popular and many of the school ready room learning opportunities promote positive food choices.
The Healthy Cooking Company was originally established by the founders of Queensland Childcare Services to assist in developing positive eating habits in the children who attend their centres.

Some talented young people will take to the stage in Maleny Players’ next production, a trio of diverse one-act plays. Players president Rob Hobson said the group was delighted to have recruited several outstanding performers aged under 25, while also welcoming back a couple of performers who last acted in Maleny some years ago. Under the general title Dubious Expectations, the three short plays deal in very different ways with the theme of frustrated or unrealistic ambition. ‘How He Lied to Her Husband’ is a witty comedy by George Bernard Shaw, in which a young man believes he has found true love with an older married woman. The other plays, both locally written, are set in the present day. ‘The Volunteer’ by Rob Hobson is a serious drama of marital tension progressively ratcheting up between a mismatched pair. ‘The Artist’ by Andrew Wallace is an irreverent look at a self-doubting young modern painter. As he tries to complete his first big commission a helpful friend proves to be anything but. Dubious Expectations promises to be diverting live theatre entertainment with something for everyone. While aiming to maintain the standard of the Players’ successful production of ‘Travelling North’ in March, the problems of ageing now make way for an emphasis on the disillusion of middle age and follies of youth. "Ports are places where stories are told," says a character in this film. In this case, the port is Marseille where refugees gather to show their transit papers that they hope will allow them to move on to safer countries. The director and writer, Christian Petzold, has skillfully adapted the 1942 novel by Anna Seghers, which dealt with people fleeing fascism to secure freedom in another country. He has transposed the World War II situation to contemporary Europe where people are fleeing persecution under other regimes. In doing so, he has created a tense, multi-layered thriller that explores that most topical issue - the statelessness of displaced people. Refugee Georg (Franz Rogowski) flees to Marseille where he assumes the identity of a writer who has committed suicide in Paris. Carrying the dead man's transit papers, essential for him to exit France, Georg finds himself in an impossible situation when he falls in love with Maria (Paula Beer), who is searching for her husband. And the missing husband is none other than the dead writer whose documents Georg has stolen. A sense of confusion, menace and powerlessness pervades this story, underlined by the dehumanising conditions the refugees are forced to endure in their quest for future security. Variously described by critics as ingenious and extraordinary, ‘Transit’ was selected in 2018 to compete at the Berlin International Film Festival. Timely, gripping and deeply affecting. In the Garden This winter’s top indoor gardening trends
Nambour’s recent Queensland Garden Expo showcased some of the latest in gardening trends. Talking with Narelle Van Reyk, from Scotts Osmocote, she pointed out that indoor gardening and indoor plants are red hot at the moment. Narelle predicts this winter’s trends are for more creativity, balcony herb gardens and indoor feature plants. Here are six indoor plant trends she suggested for this winter: Plants become centre stage: Plants are becoming more popular as a simple way to decorate your living space. Although potting your plant in concrete, glass and ceramic pots help create aesthetics, the look is due to the plant itself. Some of the most popular decorative indoor plants include Swiss cheese plant, devil’s ivy, bamboo and rattlesnake plants. Indoor salad gardening: Aussies are known for loving homegrown and healthy food. Just because it is cold outside doesn’t mean that you can no longer grow salad produce. Greens such as sprouts and lettuce are great to grow indoors during the cooler months. They don’t take up much space and are a great addition to the kitchen shelves. Desert-scaping: Locally, winter is generally our dry season. As such, Aussie Pinterest fanatics are creating feature pieces out of succulents and cacti that can withstand the drier conditions. Group your cacti and succulent collections together in a single pot to create a feature piece with various characteristics. Always remember to add a layer of gravel beneath the soil for optimal drainage. Recyclable pots: As more of us join the fight to get rid of single use plastics, a growing trend is upcycling used containers and bottles to pot indoor plants. This is a great DIY project for a cold winter's day - perfect for families with children who need indoor entertainment. Indoor herb gardens: The greatest myth in gardening is that you need a backyard when, in fact, the most productive herb gardens live on terrace balconies and window sills. This winter’s hottest herbs will be mint, rosemary, basil and thyme. They’ll also become a delicious addition to your winter recipes. Importance of good potting mix: Plants rely on the nutrients within the pot you plant them in to flourish. To ensure your plants reach their full potential, use a good quality, premium potting mix. Search for a potting mix with the Australian Standard red tick, which ensures that the mix has been manufactured with quality ingredients to comply with Australian Standards. Give your plants a shot of controlled release fertiliser to ensure they have all the nutrients they need to remain happy and healthy.
Tree mystery solved
Good news Brian … a number of local plant detectives called the office to tell you that your mystery flowering tree is called Elaeocarpus bancroftii (common name ebony heart, Johnstone River almond or Kuranda quandong). It comes from Far North Queensland rainforests, growing from Cooktown to Tully. It’s a slow grower, so yours could be fairly old. In the north it will produce fruits that are edible but this far south it seems to struggle to bear fruit at all.
Permaculture Maleny group up and running Contributed by Phillip Sinn Between 40 and 50 people attended the meeting to form the Permaculture Maleny group, ranging from inexperienced through to some long-term established and well-known permaculture practitioners. The high level of interest in this area is not surprising considering the eco-minded Maleny community. Many expressed excitement and that the formation of such a group was long overdue. There are a huge range of activities for the group to become involved in, including community gardening, Permablitzes, workshops and guest speakers on a huge range of topics and permaculture site visits. At the second meeting, to be held at 7pm on Monday, August 5 at the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre (17 Bicentenary Lane), there will be a focus on arranging the first of many activities and also looking at how the group might become involved in community gardening. Anyone with an interest in permaculture is welcome. There is a $2 charge to cover the hire of the meeting venue. The 27-hole gross winners were Shane Eastell and Brigette Griffin from Sonia Kenway and Brett Adamson. The 27-hole nett winners were Rod Eccles and Joan Swyny followed by Sean Danes and Debs Rutherford. The 18-hole nett winners were Robyn Ryan and Mick Robins and the nine-hole winners were Moss Thistlewaite and Di Smith. Thursday, July 18 the ladies foursome championships were played with 20 pairs. The 27hole gross winners were Cathy Stone and Andrea Campbell from Sonia Kenway and Karen Kemp. The 27-hole nett winners were Hope Hannah and Robyn Ryan from Jo Eccles and Marie Goyder. The 18-hole nett winners were Pat Chapman and Janelle Balfe and the nine-hole nett winners were Lea Garner and Michelle Wormwell. NTPs: 5 and 18 - Andrea Campbell and Cathy Stone, 16 - Sue Williamson and Helen Lewis and 23 - Marie Goyder and Jo Eccles. Many thanks to the greens staff for their efforts to present the course in great condition for the championship events. For those who didn't play in the foursomes there was a stableford with 20 ladies. The winner was Fay Raven on 37 points followed by Narelle Williams on 35 points. NTPs: - 2 Pauline Mason, 16 - Jan Powlesland, 18 - (second shot) Pam Marsden. BRD to 32 points. That brings the championship events to a close for 2019. However, the Magics were the winners on the day. Thank you to Gerry Gabriel, Jan Maguire, Cynthia Garvie and Sonia Douglas. Whistlers played at Maroochydore against the Phoenix. It was a beautiful day, and nice and warm when we were on the court. We had very tight games on every set, with lots of deuces and also tie breakers. We had enough for the day by the end but it was a good start for the season. Score was 46-21 games, 6-2 sets. Team was Paula Cudmore, Brenda Warner, Donna Kuskopf and Aki Lepper. The Wildcats were at home to old friends Caloundra Skylarks with lots of laughter and yelling on both sides. Pauline Fraley, Stacey English, Jenie Riding and Sonia Douglas came out fighting and were the conquerors at the end. The score was 7-1 sets; 46-30 games. This Sunday is the Mary Valley Come and Play Tennis Day 10am–2pm at Witta Tennis Club. Adult social tennis including round robin and fun games with a barbeque lunch and prizes to be won. Ken Barker went to the Gold Coast and enjoyed the excellent hospitality and lawns of three clubs – Burleigh Heads Palm Beach, Coolangatta and Southport – to play in the open and second division events of their annual tournament. Coaching for beginners and others is available on the picturesque lawns at the bottom of the Maleny Showgrounds from 8-10am on Saturdays. These are popular sessions in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. This is the perfect opportunity to try out a traditional martial art. This will be special class where you will have an opportunity to learn some basic self-defence techniques and enjoy demonstrations by experienced students. Rhee Taekwon-Do teaches self-defence techniques for children and adults, as well as promoting positive values such as respect for teachers and parents, self-discipline and perseverance. It’s great fun and it's also great for fitness and general good health.

The Amigoes showed good early form in their season starter. It could be their turn to take out the trophy. Holidays have meant some teams get into the competition using backups. Well done to the team that travelled away to represent the club. Thanks Joe Walters, Ray Ellemor and Jim Wiedman. Visits like these with our fellow clubs are very important for our club and near neighbours who reciprocate each month. Friday Scroungers saw some good form, with Denis Kyling amassing a score larger than one could count to. The handicapper will check out his form. Positive feedback on the new format is much appreciated as people adjust to use all their bowls skills on the rink every Friday afternoon at 2pm for 2.30pm. Sunday fast bowls is proving popular. Come and try this new format – it is bowls as never before. All welcome, new or old. A reminder to folks to nominate for championship events as listed in organisers that Miles Allen emailed to all members.
