Hi Everyone... In my column in last week’s edition (yes, the first one for the year) I talked about how enthusiastic and raring to go I was for the New Year. So I was really pleased this week to receive an email from a local reader, Rebecca, suggesting a new section for the paper called ‘Farm Gate News’. Rebecca reckons it would be a great opportunity for local farmers / producers to be able to share with readers when they have produce for sale at their ‘Farm Gate’. We have always covered stories involving things that are happening in the local farming community, and this week we have a story where we speak to pineapple farmer Chris Fullerton about the recent media attention generated around the glut of pineapples in North Queensland. However, I would like to be able to regularly include more stories about local producers, seasonal product availability, and (easy) ideas for using local produce. While actors like Bryan Brown, Michael Caton and Magda Szubanski will feature on screen next week at the Maleny Film Festival, a highlight of the festival will be the participation of veteran actor Max Cullen. Max will be familiar to many from the dozens of movies and television series he has appeared in over the decades, from ‘Sunday Too Far Away’ back in 1975 and ‘Spider and Rose’ in 1994 to more recent movies such as Baz Luhrmann’s ‘Australia’, ‘Goldstone’ and even ‘X-Men Origins: Wolverine’. Not just film buffs, but anyone interested in creativity and Australian cultural history, will enjoy hearing his anecdotes and insights in a Q&A session, ‘Meet a Film Insider’ (Saturday 3.30pm). Max was part of the creative ferment in Sydney during the sixties and seventies. He rubbed shoulders with legends of art, literature and theatre such as Brett Whiteley, Patrick White, Reg Livermore and Hayes Gordon and has worked with anyone who is anyone in Australian cinema. Although he trained as an artist, painting and sculpting took second place to theatre, where he has been a stage designer and director as well as actor.

Who better to meet in Maleny over the Australia Day weekend? Two of the festival’s four films will be screened on Friday. These are ‘Australia Day’ at 3pm, then ‘Ali’s Wedding’ at 7.15pm. On Saturday you can see the comedy ‘Three Summers’, which was written and directed by Ben Elton, at 1pm and the drama ‘Ellipsis’, directed by actor David Wenham, at 7.30pm. No local pineapple glut By Lea Parkes Over the past few weeks there has been plenty of media discussion following a Facebook post about the huge numbers of pineapples that farmers in North Queensland are being forced to leave on the ground to rot during this bumper season. Perfect weather conditions have caused an excess in supply, which in turn has forced down the price that the farmers are being paid for their crops, which means in some cases farmers aren’t able to cover their production costs. With Glasshouse Country being one of the biggest pineapple growing areas in Queensland, we know that locals were concerned about how the situation has been affecting our local pineapple farmers. GC&M News caught up with local pineapple farmer Chris Fullerton, whose family has been farming pineapples in the area for over 100 years. Chris said, “I really feel for the pineapple farmers in North Queensland whose crops may not even cover costs, you don't like to hear this for any growers, no matter what crop they're growing. “When you consider what goes into producing a crop, not only the cost, but the hard work and effort involved, it is just so disappointing for those that are affected,” he said. While some farmers on the Sunshine Coast are currently harvesting, many farms won't start getting their harvesting underway until February, giving local farmers confidence that they will

Funding for Wildlife Hospital upgrade Efforts to rescue, rehabilitate and release sick, injured, orphaned or displaced native wildlife on the Sunshine Coast received a significant boost last week with a $250,000 Federal Grant for the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital. The grant will go toward upgrading bird and koala rehabilitation facilities, as well as turtle recovery ponds and pools. New industrial grade washing machines and other maintenance and repairs will also be included in a comprehensive program of improvements at the hospital. Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace said: “Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital is a Sunshine Coast icon, and I am proud to have been able to play a part in supporting its work. Our natural environment is one of our community’s most important assets and the Turnbull Government recognises that we must work hard to preserve it.” “This grant will help the Wildlife Hospital to do even more, and I can’t wait to come back and see the new facilities in action,” he said. Wes Mannion, Australia Zoo Managing Director, said the funds would make a significant difference to the treatment, rehabilitation and population of native animals across South East Queensland and beyond. “The support we receive at the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital from the Federal Government means we can continue and even expand the life-saving work the team of vets, nurses and volunteers do here,” Wes said.

Changes to Maleny parking soon to be enforced
The two-hour parking time limit in the business district of Maleny will be soon be regulated to improve accessibility for residents, visitors and businesses. The two-hour time limit has been in place for many years, however until this time has been self-regulated, relying on motorists to ensure they don’t overstay the limit. Sunshine Coast Council started an education campaign in August 2017 to advise motorists and will commence regulating the two-hour parking areas from February 1. As a part of the education program, council officers have visited each business in the area and distributed hundreds of parking fact sheets to shops and the Visitor Information Centre. New two-hour parking signage has also been installed throughout the relevant streets. Division 5 councillor Jenny McKay encouraged motorists to be mindful of the two-hour limit. “The business district of Maleny has long been a two-hour parking zone, with signage at each entrance to the area,” Cr McKay said. “However, over time, locals and business owners have found that motorists were long overstaying the time limit, significantly impacting on the availability of parking for visitors and shoppers in the area.”

‘Cooker and a Looker’ launches book By Sonia Clark
While many know Glass House Mountains local Amanda Smyth from her work with her family-run turf farm, she is also an award-winning food blogger who has just launched her first cook book. The book is a natural progression from her much loved blog ‘Cooker and a Looker’ which serves up a delicious mix of real life, humour and home cooking ideas set against an often comically entertaining backdrop of family farm life. Amanda was keen to provide readers with accessible homestyle recipes that use everyday ingredients and the book, which launched last month, has already proved a hit with home cooks. Amanda has been publishing her blog since 2012 and the idea for the book release followed interest from an international publisher keen to release an e-book and hardcopy. All up the process took around 18 months to develop, with the e-book becoming a bestseller on Amazon.

Despite the overseas interest, Amanda decided to release the hard copy herself locally which also allowed her to include a few more personal stories. Already the response to the local release has been fantastic. “It’s just such a thrill!” Amanda said. “We went on sale in December with very little promotion and already people from all over Australia are sending in photos of themselves in their kitchens using the book – it’s super cool.” The book is titled the same as her blog – ‘Cooker and a Looker’ – which was how Amanda’s husband Dean had admiringly referred to her in his wedding day speech. When Dean was growing up, his footy coach had advised that when choosing a wife you would either get a “cooker” or a “looker” – not both. Dean begged to differ and proudly declared his new wife to be both, hence the name of the blog and, more recently, her first book. It was also husband Dean who originally encouraged Amanda to pursue her love of food and cooking by setting a series of challenges a few years later. These included entering one of her recipes in the Royal Queensland Show (her pickles won the blue ribbon that year), auditioning for Masterchef (she made it through to final auditions) and focusing on food, all of which lead to the creation of her food blog. Since starting out as a blogger (convinced her mum was the only reader), Amanda has gone on to win blogging awards and has been fortunate enough to travel the country discussing her writing. With Australia Day just around the corner, we thought it’d be great to share Amanda’s ‘Australia Day Pav’ recipe in the shape of the country (and, yes, it includes Tasmania). Cooker and a Looker Style Ingredients • 4 egg whites • 1 cup caster sugar • 400ml thickened cream, whipped • fruit to decorate - we’re spoiled for choice this time of year Equipment • baking paper • electric mixer • Australia-shaped pavlova template • baking tray • oven Instructions Preheat the oven to 130ºC. Using an electric mixer, beat egg whites in a large bowl until soft peaks form. Add caster sugar, one tablespoon at a time, beating constantly until thick and glossy. Place the map template on the baking tray under the sheet of baking paper. Using the template as a guide, spread the meringue mixture into the shape of Australia, carefully removing the template from under the baking paper before baking. Bake in 130ºC oven for 60 minutes. Community News Bob Banner recognised for outstanding contribution At the end of last year, long serving Lions member Bob Banner was taken by surprise when he received a Melvin Jones Fellowship for his exceptional service and contribution to the organisation. Presented with the honour at the Beerwah Lions Christmas breakup dinner on December 16, Bob, who has been a Lions member for nearly 48 years, had absolutely no idea that he had even been nominated for the prestigious fellowship. Along with the committee, Beerwah Lions Club Secretary Justin Neubecker helped arrange the application and approval for the Fellowship which is the third such award received by Beerwah Members in the last 12 years. “The committee felt this would be a wonderful way to officially recognise Bob’s incredible dedication and commitment over the years,” Justin said. “Bob is a great member who has been very involved with our club since he joined us in 1973 when he came over from the Tewantin-Noosa Club. “His work has included being a past president and his ongoing involvement with numerous committees and club work over the years. Both he and his wife Joy are just lovely communityminded people.” The Melvin Jones Fellowship was established in 1973 and recognises outstanding Lions or members of the public who have made a significant contribution to Lionism. They are presented with a special lapel badge and wall display plaque.
Justin explained that the original plan was to surprise Bob at the Beerwah Club’s 50th birthday bash in September. However, the award comes from overseas and it didn’t arrive in time, so the committee decided to present it to Bob at the Christmas dinner. “All year we had to keep this ‘hush hush’ from Bob so that it would be a real surprise for him,” Justin said. “This has been a great way to honour his longterm commitment. He is a dedicated member who always attends meetings and always helps out – he is a very deserving recipient.”

Free cyber bullying booklet available
A free booklet educating young people about their legal rights and responsibilities when using social media, and how to stay safe online is available from the Legal Aid Queensland website. ‘The Cyber Bullying, Sexting and Facebook: Know the law, know your rights’ booklet is helping young people to better understand the legal consequences of their online behaviour and where to get help if they need it. Legal Aid Queensland lawyer David Law said: “Young people often don’t realise cyber bullying is a crime, or that they can be charged with an offence for possessing or forwarding naked or partially naked photos of someone aged 18 or younger. “Educating young people about what the law says about cyber bullying and sexting, how to prevent your personal photos getting into the wrong hands, and where to get help if you need it, will support young people to make informed choices to better protect their online safety.” The booklet can be downloaded or ordered for free from the Legal Aid Queensland website www.legalaid.qld.gov.au.
Caravan security - how good is yours?
Caravans are a common sight locally with many people visiting the area and staying in one of the caravan parks, as well as local owners who secure their caravans on the property ready for their next holiday. Police would like to remind all caravan owners and users to take simple security measures that may deter offenders from stealing your caravan. An offence occurred recently where offenders attempted to steal a caravan that was parked outside a retirement village. The offenders hitched the caravan to a vehicle and drove off with the caravan. Fortunately, the owners had attached a padlock to the tow ball so the caravan would not lock on, so when the offenders tried to complete a U-turn the caravan detached from the vehicle and rolled into the median strip. The caravan has since been returned to the owners with minimal damage. There are a number of devices available that help secure caravans, trailers and horse floats. They can include wheel clamps, chains or a clamp for the hitch. Of course, most importantly, if you have the security, make sure you use it. It’s easy to think “I’ll do that tomorrow” but tomorrow you could wake up to find your caravan stolen.

With kids returning to school at the end of January, the library has many reliable and free online resources to help, all you need is a library card. For homework, check out our online encyclopaedias ‘Britannica Library’, ‘World Book Online’ and ‘Webster World’. For high school assignments, our teen pages have useful links to all the information you need on referencing, copyright, evaluating resources and plagiarism. To help with literacy, there are a number of websites listed on our children’s pages. Raise your reading skills with ‘Literacy Planet’, where you can get a personal avatar, score points and “buy” stuff (parents need to sign up first). ‘Muzzy’ provides online language courses for children including English as a second language, British English, Spanish, Latin-American Spanish, Chinese, Korean, French, German and Italian. Read aloud and along with ‘Tumblebooks’ for interactive books, puzzles and more. Our teen pages have links to websites for older students, including ‘Australian Poetry Library’, ‘Play Shakespeare’, ‘Shakespeare High’ and ‘Spark’ notes. A shared vision for Landsborough
Every resident, business owner and community group in Landsborough is invited to share their vision for the town’s future with Sunshine Coast Council, as council’s Landsborough Place Making project gets underway. It’s a one-in-20-year opportunity for each individual to help define their town’s future. Council’s first round of community engagement will start next week, with the entire Landsborough community invited to have its say at visioning events on Saturday February 3 and Sunday February 4. A ceremony of remembrance
A Remembrance Ceremony will be held on Friday January 26 in Maleny to remember the Indigenous people of this continent, and its islands, who lost their lives in the changing possession of this land that began on January 26, 1788. This year will be the fifth ceremony held in Maleny. Starting back in 2014, the event was held at Tesch Park for three years, with attendance increasing from 20 people the first year, to 90 people attending in 2016. Last year for the first time the event was held at the RSL Hall in Maleny with Indigenous person Bev Hand taking on the task of key speaker, and that event saw 120 in attendance. Anyone is welcome to attend this year’s Remembrance Ceremony, to be held from 10am to 11am at the RSL Maleny Memorial Hall, 1 Bunya Street, Maleny, with the ‘Welcome to Country’ being given by Indigenous elder Aunty Edna Kina. The ceremony gives an opportunity to remember and honour those who died in seeking to defend and hold their homeland. Submissions called for on NBN towers
The next step in the development process for six NBN fixed wireless broadband towers was taken last week, with the publication of notices in the Glasshouse Country and Maleny News (January 17 edition) calling for written submissions on the proposed developments. The tower locations are 127 Appaloosa Drive, Conondale (MCU17/2006); 89 Sinclairs Lane, Balmoral Ridge (MCU17/2177); 54 Red Road, Beerburrum (MCU17/2002); Old Peachester Road, Peachester (near Range Road) (MCU17/2007); 75 Link Road, Glass House Mountains (MCU17/2004); and Burgess Avenue, Maleny (MCU17/2005). Along with those advertised in GC&M News, notifications for four other locations were similarly published, these being at Image Flat, Kureelpa, Valdora and Weyba Downs. Signs are also to be placed at each location, as well as notifying adjoining property owners of the application. Submissions open January 24 and close at 5pm on February 16. Properly made submissions can be posted to Sunshine Coast Council, Locked bag 72, Sunshine Coast Mail Centre, Queensland, 4560; or emailed to mail@ sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au. These recent NBN tower applications have created considerable community interest… and some angst. This will be the only chance locals and interested parties will have their comments, suggestion, views and proposals taken into consideration as part of the application review process. A number of similar previous applications to Council were rejected due to inconsistencies with the planning scheme. However, they were subsequently approved after NBN appealed to the Planning and Environment Court. After taking up residence in the old forestry station in June 2015, and thanks to thousands of hours of hard work by 70 members and a range of funding grants, the upgraded Mapleton Men’s Shed is now officially open. Sunshine Coast Council Division 10 Councillor Greg Rogerson, who performed the official opening, said it was remarkable to see the transformation that had taken place. “Council is very proud to support organisations such as the not-for-profit Mapleton Men’s Shed as their role in the community is paramount,” Cr Rogerson said. “Council provided a combination of Community Minor and Major Grants funding for improvements and more recently the group received 50th Anniversary of the Naming of the Sunshine Coast funding to establish a gallery for housing the historical artefacts and history of the forestry site. “The dedicated Mapleton Men’s Shed members have spent thousands of volunteer hours to
complete refurbishment of the barracks building, including the replacement of guttering, roofing, new paths and outdoor seating area.” The Men’s Shed movement has become one of the most powerful tools in addressing health and wellbeing and helping men to be productive in their community. The modern Men’s Shed is an updated version of the shed in the backyard that has long been a part of Australian culture. Becoming a member of a Men’s Shed provides a safe and busy environment where men can find many of these things in an atmosphere of oldfashioned mateship. Men can just come and have a yarn and a cuppa if that is all they’re looking for. Mapleton Men’s Shed president John Brady said the official opening occurred on the 50th Anniversary of the barracks being relocated from Mapleton forest into town, to its current address

The official opening of Mapleton Men’s Shed upgrade, November 30, 2017 at 52 Delicia Road, Mapleton. “It also marks the completion of most of the restoration work to be done on the site, although we have several ideas for making the premises more suitable for our Men’s Shed activities,” he said. “The transformation of the site is outstanding as the whole site was very overgrown with bush having been vacant for some 20 years, and all the buildings were very neglected, especially the barracks building which suffered significant white ant damage. “All buildings have now been restored including full internal and external painting and considerable landscaping has resulted in a very attractive setting for our members. “We recently opened a Drop-in Centre in the barracks, which operates every morning to encourage any men to drop in for a cup of coffee and companionship as we are always open to more members.” To find out more about the Mapleton Men’s Shed call 5445 7968.

State Member for Caloundra Australia Day approaches and, aside from being a day to enjoy the beach and a barbeque, it is a time to thank the traditional owners and all Australians young and old, men and women who have and are contributing to our great nation. I want today, however to consider women who have contributed to the history of this country knowing that it is impossible to list them all.
Fiona Stanley is an epidemiologist known for
her public health work, and her research into child and maternal health, and birth disorders. Stanley is the Patron of the Telethon Institute for Child Health Research and a Distinguished Professorial Fellow in the School of Paediatrics and Child Health at UWA. Since her first job in the 70s at a paediatrics clinic in Perth hospital, Stanley has lead a distinguished medical career, highly decorated for her contributions to medicine and science, and is an inspiration to Australians. Education should focus, to a degree, on women and men of Stanley’s calibre. The best were not all born overseas. The 1912 Olympics were the first games to host women’s swimming events. Sarah Frances ‘Fanny’ Durack and Mina Wylie were not only the first Australian women to compete in Olympic swimming, but were both formidable competitors in perhaps Australia’s favourite Olympic sport. At those Olympics games, Durack set a new world record in the 100-metre freestyle and won the final, becoming the first Australian woman to win gold in swimming. From 1910 until 1918 Durack was the world's greatest female swimmer of all distances. Wylie competed in NSW and Australian championships from 1906 to 1934, winning 115 titles, including every Australian and NSW championship event in 1911, 1922 and 1924 in freestyle, backstroke and breaststroke. Both women have been inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame and set the stage for a strong history of Australian Women’s swimming.
Stella Maria Sarah Miles Franklin is an Australian writer and feminist better known by her male pseudonym ‘Miles Franklin’, and for her book ‘My Brilliant Career’. Franklin was deeply committed to developing a uniquely Australian form of literature and her influence had a lasting impact on modern literature in this country. Franklin’s story also reflects on a time when women often wrote under male pseudonyms – an unfortunate tradition that has not completely disappeared. The Miles Franklin Award was established under the terms of Stella Franklin’s Will and is awarded annually to a man or woman for their literary work. Check in with your children
As the new school year begins it is really important that parents take the time to really check in with their children and make sure they are okay. The problem is that I don’t know the locations of all the farms and I never know who actually has produce available. So, I think it would be a great community service if Glasshouse Country & Maleny news published details of produce that farmers in our region are selling at the farm gate each week. Playgroups play important role
I read in the GC&M News, January 17 edition that there are six ‘Playgroup Queensland’ Playgroups in this area. I would like let readers know that there are also a number of other groups including the Glasshouse Country and Peachester Uniting Church Playgroup under the name of ‘Take a Break Playgroup’ that has been operating for at least 10 years and maybe more. We are a church based Playgroup with a wonderful group of helpers, Mums and beautiful children. We just want to let the Mums in the area know that we are here from 9am-11am each Wednesday. We are currently on a break for school holidays, but we will be back at the Uniting Church at Twin Peaks Drive, Beerwah from January 31, and we can be contacted on 5439 9735. I do believe that Glasshouse Country Baptist Church also has a Playgroup. It is so good to see so many Playgroups in the area, as children and especially Mums need to have a safe place where all can relax and have a gentle, lovely time. Smart meters – safe and useful
Re Richard Giles’ letter on smart meters (GC&M News, January 17 edition), he implies that these meters broadcast huge volumes of electromagnetic radiation through “your bedroom wall or your children’s”, with unknown dangers to human health. What claptrap! The facts are that exposure to radio frequency during a 20-year life span of a smart meter is equivalent to the exposure you receive from ONE 30-minute mobile phone call! Secondly, the typical mobile phone is held to the ear, whereas smart meters are typically many feet away from humans, and their broadcast exposure is tens of thousands of times lower. Here are some results of comparative measurements taken inside typical homes, showing the relative magnitude of smart meter emissions compared with other devices: baby monitor - 3290, mobile phone 2030, microwave (leakage) - 1490, cordless phone - 170, Wi-Fi modem - 50, and smart meter - 11. Note that the worst of these, the baby monitor, is under 4% of ARPANSA’s recommended limit for human exposure (source: EMC Technologies 2011, page 7). Let’s stick to the facts on smart meters and evaluate them on any role they may have in solving our electricity supply and pricing issues. Bruce James Maleny

Keep the kids active The start of a new school year is the time to create new habits and new routines. Children exchange hours of bike riding, swimming and playing with friends for hours of sitting – in the classroom, or often, in front of screens. Yet, keeping children active throughout the year is essential, so it’s important for parents and teachers to take steps to get kids moving throughout the day. Being physically active is good for kids’ health, and creates opportunities for making new friends and developing physical and social skills. Fitting enough exercise into the day may seem difficult at times, so Cancer Council Queensland CEO Ms Chris McMillan shares tips to help parents, guardians and teachers make physical activity a natural part of the school year. One, find new ways to increase activity. Kids spend a lot of sedentary time in the classroom, but it’s important to offset this. Find ways to break up the day with bursts of exercise, for example, park the car a block away from school and walk the last part with your child, or encourage them to run around and play at lunchtime. Two, try out a sport or active hobby. Allow children to choose the type of activity they are interested in, or from a few options. It could be a team sport at school, such as soccer, football or netball, or a class like dance or martial arts after school. Teachers and parents can introduce basic sporting skills from a young age, such as ball throwing, skipping and jumping, so they feel more confident across a range of activities. Three, make exercise a family activity. The entire family could go for a bike ride, take a walk around the neighbourhood before dinner, or head to a local park to shoot a few hoops or kick a ball to get children moving after a day in the classroom. For health benefits, children and young people, aged over five years, should accumulate at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous intensity physical activity every day and minimise the time they spend being sedentary. Positive changes to help kids be healthier, happier and stronger will have significant short and long term benefits, and reduce the risk of chronic disease later in life.

Health &Wellbeing Award winning fad-free food blog A University of the Sunshine Coast academic who is working to bust myths around nutrition and food fads has won a national award for her witty, no-nonsense healthy eating blog. Associate Lecturer in Nutrition and Dietetics Tara Leong’s blog, ‘The Nutrition Guru and The Chef’, was recently announced as the winner of the Healthy Eating category in the Bupa Blog Awards. The national healthcare group recognised the blog, which Ms Leong developed with her chef husband Jeff, as a leading influencer platform improving the health and happiness of their online community. “It is that time of year when people are motivated to make lifestyle changes, and crazy diets and supplements are promoted that have little or no scientific evidence behind them,” Ms Leong said. “Social media is a way of reaching as many people as possible to fight the ridiculous amount of nutrition information online that is incorrect, and can be dangerous,” said the former personal trainer, who began the blog in 2013 while completing USC’s Nutrition and Dietetics degree. The couple now has more than 70,000 followers

across their social media sites, including the blog and a website by the same name. “I am passionate about speaking out against food fads and encouraging people to just calm down when it comes to nutrition,” Ms Leong said. "Social media and the internet have a strong influence on people's health choices, and unfortunately many social media accounts in the health space are run by those with no qualifications in nutrition.” More than 800 blogs were nominated for the Bupa Award, with each blog reviewed by a team of advisers for scientific accuracy. “Our blog was chosen on its ability to provide evidence-based nutrition information,” Ms Leong said. “My degree from USC has given me the knowledge and skills to be able to do this.”

Living - Arts Through Our Eyes
In the Still of a Moment Maleny artist Judi Parkinson will be exhibiting at Sarah’s Unplugged in Maple Street, Maleny, from this Thursday, January 25, through to the end of March. Judi is a multi-media artist and her collective works form a personal visual diary. ‘In the Still of a Moment’ is a collection of oil paintings portraying moments from her environment, travels and subjective experiences.
Judi works both en plein air and in her studio using her own photographs, sketches and watercolours recorded at the scenes. From the flowers, trees and birds in her garden to the landscapes of Maleny and surrounds, she is continually inspired by the harmony found in the natural world. These works often focus on the effects of light and shade, especially low sunlight, as she says it provides atmosphere and interesting shadows for the compositions. As a photographer, Judi pursues the unexpected captured moment of a situation in her retro paintings. ‘In the Still of a Moment’ is an exhibition of painted snapshots, moments Judi enjoys from both her peaceful Maleny environment and nostalgic memories.
Maleny Winter Theatre Festival By Judith Ross-Smith Maleny Arts Council introduced its 2018 season at a Christmas party on The Deck by announcing the inaugural Maleny Winter Theatre Festival over four weeks from mid-August to mid-September. Program Director Peter Lavery said feedback from artists indicated Maleny was a special place for them with informed and engaged audiences. “We are the only arts council included alongside major venues (like the Events Centre) in the Queensland Showcase for selecting major shows and giving us access to a national pool of professional artists,” he said. “This has meant we are able to take a programming leap in 2018 by developing a program of three productions over a four-week period, our first Winter Theatre Festival, spacing them out so you don’t have to see them over one weekend.”

The festival will open on Saturday August 18 with a performance of ‘Which Way Home’, performed by Australia’s leading indigenous theatre company, Ilbijerri. This play draws on writer Katie Beckett’s personal memories of growing up with her single Aboriginal father. This will be followed on Sunday August 26 by a new work from the creative team that brought ‘Motherland’ to Maleny, Belloo Creative, cofounded by Katherine Lyall-Watson. Katherine, with her dramaturg Kathryn Kelly, travelled to Maleny from Brisbane for the launch to announce their new production. “‘Motherland’ was one of the most successful theatre events we have had, and I am delighted they have offered us their next production ‘Rovers’, an original and brand-new work starring Barbara Lowing (Motherland) and Roxanne McDonald,” Professor Lavery said. On Sunday September 16 the third show of the festival will be a cabaret work by Isabel Hearteg, ‘Death by Soprano’, which Professor Lavery described as an irreverent look at the ‘diva’ and her sometimes over-inflated ego. He said Maleny’s opera lovers would enjoy this “satirical catalogue of operatic death scenes”. The first show of the year, on Sunday May 27, will be Lyall Brooks’ ‘A Prudent Man’, an award winner from Melbourne and Perth Fringe Festivals in 2016 and 2017. “We will wrap up the year with baritone crooner Mikelangelo, one of Australia’s rising stars, in a stirring homage to Nick Cave, Tom Waits and Leonard Cohen – a show filled with beauty, power and humour. It is titled 'Cave-Waits-Cohen' and we will stage it at 2pm on October 21,” Professor Lavery said.
Vianta Arts will be featuring a photographic exhibition during February which includes the work of three artists: Ilia Starkovsky, Annette Pendelberry and Ian Ferguson (pictured below). The opening will be on Friday February 2 at 6pm, and you can expect great music, wine and food on the night (but you will want to make sure you book a table). 2018 scholarship for the performing arts
The Events Centre, Caloundra is proud to announce that applications for the 2018 Scholarship of Performing Arts are now being accepted. The annual scholarship of $2,500 will assist a young Sunshine Coast student towards their future study in performing arts. Since 2008 the Centre has provided financial support for 10 talented locals to pursue their goals and career in the arts. The scholarship is designed to provide assistance to a Sunshine Coast resident, 25 years or younger, undertaking a second year of a fulltime accredited tertiary level educational in the performing arts in 2018. It provides students with a one-off financial bursary to assist them in their career development with funding for their studies, equipment or related projects. The Events Centre General Manager Gary Mears said: “The Sunshine Coast has an abundant wealth of creative youth and this scholarship recognises the importance of fostering local talent to achieve their ambitions as a performer or arts worker. Fred Smith album launch in Maleny
Australian diplomat, songwriter and author Fred Smith returns to Maleny on Friday February 2 to launch his latest album, ‘Great’, at the Maleny RSL. Fred visited Maleny in May last year when touring his multimedia show, ‘The Dust of Uruzgan’, about his experiences as a diplomat based in Afghanistan. This time Fred is launching a double CD with songs inspired by the year he spent living in Washington DC and touring as a musician in the USA. That tour resulted in the 2007 album, ‘Texas’, one of Smith’s nine solo albums. The new album ‘Great’ allows much scope for Smith’s insightful lyrics and mordant wit. Looking ahead to 2018
For all of us who want to see our community get ahead, grow, and get its fair share of Federal Government support, we truly hit new heights in 2017. Last year the Sunshine Coast received more Federal funding than it ever has before, including an extra $650 million for Bruce Highway upgrades, $5 million for a new Community Sporting Hub, $5 million for mental health research and treatment at the Thompson Institute, and $3 million in upgrades for the Events Centre at Caloundra. 2018 can be even better and I am determined to do what I can to make that a reality. I know that many people in our Hinterland feel held back by the lack of mobile reception and internet access, so one of my top priorities will be to support Hinterland residents to build the lives that they want with better communications infrastructure. My other priorities will include fast tracking our Bruce Highway upgrades, and fighting to duplicate the railway line between Beerburrum and Nambour. As our community continues to grow and thrive, however, we must preserve its character, and protect what makes the Coast unique. That’s why I will also be fighting against any proposal to build a casino in the new SunCentral CBD development. We must bring meaningful new jobs here through new industries like high tech manufacturing, health and aged care and professional services. The successes of my Defence Industry Initiative and the investments made here by companies like Youi show that it is possible, without the social impact of a casino.

State Member for Glass House Building a better Glass House in 2018
Here we are at the beginning of another new year and also another new term in State Parliament. It is an honour to again be elected the Member for Glass House at the end of last year and I am proud of the achievements we have accomplished together over the last nine years. I’m not a big fan of resolutions because I don’t believe it needs to be a ‘new year’ or a ‘new term’ to strive for or promise results but at the beginning of this new term I just want to assure you that I will do as I have always done and that is to continue to fight for the issues and infrastructure that is important to our communities and families. I will not be complacent about fighting for the commitments the LNP made during the recent election campaign – commitments like the rail duplication from Beerburrum to Landsborough, an Indoor Aquatic Centre for Maleny, a long term lease for the Mooloolah Valley Community Centre, flashing school zone safety lights at Peachester and Glass House Mountains State Schools, upgrades to several schools and maintenance funding for the CCTV cameras operated by the Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce – to name but a few. So, I encourage you to keep raising issues with me that are important to you and your family so together we can continue to build a better Glass House.

As part of the remaining works for the Palmwoods Streetscape upgrade, Main Street is receiving a new pedestrian crossing and new road surface. To enable this work to take place safely and efficiently, a temporary road closure is required. The closure will include the section of Main Street from the Margaret Street-Main Street intersection to the new temporary roundabout near the Spar Supermarket. The area will be temporarily closed to vehicles from 6am Monday January 22 to 6pm Wednesday January 24 (weather permitting). Pedestrian access will remain. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and thank businesses and residents for your continued patience and understanding – and be sure to mark your diary for the opening on March 10.

Liberal National Party Leader Deb Frecklington and I have announced an assault on the terrifying ice epidemic ravaging Queensland. Ice has infiltrated our small towns and cities, it is destroying families and attacking the very soul and fabric of our communities. We’re calling for bipartisan support for the Liberal National Party’s ice strategy and are holding forums in four regional centres in coming weeks, including on the Sunshine Coast, to hear directly from Queenslanders affected by the drug scourge. The LNP’s comprehensive plan included four new drug and alcohol rehabilitation centres around the state, a boosted funding program for prevention services such as ‘Lives Well Lived’ to target highrisk demographics as well as increased crime prevention and awareness, stronger enforcement and shutting down organised crime networks that supply drugs to our kids. Noticeboard Can just anybody sing?
Well, if you’d asked these guys when they first joined the Sunshine Statesmen Barbershop chorus, the answer may have been “no”. However, since the Pan Pacific Barbershop convention in Sydney in October, the answer is a resounding “yes we can”. Up against choruses and quartets from the entire Pacific region, the chorus members performed at international standard and improved their score from last year’s nationals. A proud bunch of singers returned from Sydney determined to do even better at the 2018 Nationals in Adelaide. A fabulous activity for your all round well-being, singing brings great joy to the community and yourself. Dr Pearce at Oxford University found in a recent study that singing was a very effective way to form social bonds with others. Contributed by Bev Smith In 2017, regular group bookings plus occasional parties kept the hall viable. Thanks to Sunshine Coast Council for a small grant pertaining to the 50th Anniversary of the Naming of the Sunshine Coast. This allowed us to display the hall (past and present) and invite local groups and other participating halls to partake with displays. The day was a success and open to the public. Christmas Carols in the Hall in December was a huge success. The hall was filled with happy families and thanks to Mark McArdle (MP) for his donation. Together with kind donations from many, this meant the evening was free to all the community. Thanks also to those that supported our Christmas raffle, and the winner was Diane Held of Mooloolah. The committee look forward to a rewarding year ahead. Hall meetings are held on the second Thursday of each month at 4pm in the hall. Members are urgently needed – this is your community hall, a place for your use at very minimal charges. Our next meeting is Thursday February 8. In the Garden GMAN New Year Plant Sale
Many of us hate the hot humid weather, but it is wonderful for growing our native plants, especially with the increased likelihood of regular rainfall. With this in mind the Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network (GMAN) nursery is planning a plant sale for Saturday February 3 commencing at 8am. Look for them in Uniting Park, Glass House Mountains near the Post Office. They will have lots of shrubs, trees and grasses for sale at their token price of only $1 per tube. You can’t beat the heat, or can you! With Spencer and Karen Shaw
It’s that time of year when the temperatures soar and the gaps between rainfall events can be many weeks at a time. Luckily trees shed their leaves in a fantastic manoeuvre that not only reduces their water consumption but also mulches the soil around their roots. This leads us to the key to keeping plants green and lush during this time … it’s not just pouring precious water from the tap over them to keep the moisture up, but to mulch, mulch and mulch the soil with organic matter. Mulch not only improves moisture retention, but keeps the soil cool during the extreme heat spells, encouraging the all-important soil life that will feed and improve the health of your plants. The more mulch the better – the main limitations are availability, cost and time to spread it. However, it’s very much the case that anything is better than nothing. Mulching of whole gardens beds, or planting areas is great. Come and check out our coir fibre blocks, palm fibre mulch mats, sugar cane mulch and tree guards for great products to help establish your plants. Plants are nature’s air conditioners and the more you have the cooler you’ll be!

The mighty Bunya! This month I’d like celebrate the mighty Bunya and its bountiful and nutritious nut. Respected and honoured for thousands and thousands of years by Indigenous people from South East Queensland and northern NSW, these trees have always been significant. A member of the Araucaria family, Bunya pines are majestically tall with wide impressive girths. The timber is beautifully grained and highly valued by wood workers and furniture and guitar makers. Bunyas once grew prolifically through Queensland and northern NSW mountainous areas. There are still significant stands at the Bunya Mountains and across the Blackall Range. The delicious nuts are enclosed in large, elongated woody shells which sit within huge pine cones that can weigh up to 10kg (certainly not a shade tree to park your car under in Bunya season!). When fresh, the nut has a firm and waxy texture and is creamy beige in colour. If you are fortunate to have an early wind-fall Bunya cone, the nuts are underdeveloped and have a completely different texture and taste. Reminiscent of asparagus in flavour and water chestnut in texture, these early nuts are best eaten raw in salads and quick stir-fries. The ripe nut is incredibly versatile and can be eaten raw or cooked, ground, baked and fried. The nutritional content of the bunya nut is: 40% water, 40% complex carbohydrates, 9% protein, 2% fat, 0.2% potassium, 0.06% magnesium. It is also gluten free, making bunya nut flour a substitute for people with gluten intolerance. Bunyas freeze well in the cone, so you can enjoy them for months to come. Some easy ways to incorporate these beautiful nuts into your cooking can be: simply boiled and eaten with butter and salt, made into pesto in place of pinenuts, cooked nuts ground into a meal and added to bread and cake recipes (similar to almond meal). They make a great addition to curry, soups and casseroles. We’d love to hear about your favourite way to eat Bunyas, so pop into the nursery to share! Contributed by Ken Barker With hot weather upon us, there has been a noticeable lack of enthusiasm to play on an open lawn in the early afternoon. Tuesday morning saw an energetic group from the Blackall Range Care Group play. There was practice on Saturday morning before the January meeting, but even then, between 8 and 9am the sun had a bite to it. Otherwise, the only activity was a heat haze mirage drifting across the lawn. Sensibly, the club’s attentions are focused on planning, in the shade, particularly the Australia Day MDSRC spectacular at the showgrounds. There we put our sport and our club on display. It should be fun. On Thursday afternoon a group of ten enthusiastic newcomers to croquet from Maleny Grove Village made a good impression of themselves on the lawn. One brand new player played a jump shot worthy of a professional. Ably led by Donna Manning, Garth Cottrell and Wendy Whitby, everybody seemed to enjoy themselves. Come again soon.

A Grade: First place was Gary Dallyn, 38 points, on a count-back from our runner-up, Bill Reynolds, with Richard Clayton taking out third place with 34 points. B Grade: First place went to Dan Casey with 43 points with Rod Waldron taking out runner-up with 42 points and third place going to John Tytherleigh with 36 points on a count-back from John Fairman. Wednesday, January 17: Our ladies played in a Ladies two person 18 hole Ambrose competition with first place going to the team of Seri Tytherleigh and Robin Hay with 71.25, Runners-up were Mo Lawrence and Susanne Hardy with 73.75 and third place going to Anne Devane and Jan Maguire with 78.5. The Lochwood Pennants team is looking strong this year, however more players are needed for the Bray. Pennants are played about once a fortnight through almost half the year in the benign months, April to October. Clubs from the Sunshine Coast pit between two and four players from each club against each other. Two games of singles are played, usually, but not always, in the morning, and one doubles. Players may play one game or two. To play in the Bray you need a handicap between 10 and 18. The Bray is a great chance to get experience of play in tournament conditions. It is to be recommended to, and is intended for, all players. Club play days are Thursday and Sunday at 2 for 2.30pm. From all reports there were some very close games and excellent bowls and much fun had by all. The green played well thanks to Roy Gesch, who celebrated a birthday on the green, rolling it. First of the Scroungers competitions for the year gets underway next week. This is an opportunity for all levels of membership to come and play bowls in a singles format where everyone has equal opportunity for success because of the handicap system. All players are given a handicap at the beginning of each competition using past results and player experience as the guide. This handicap is adjusted during the competition on a formula using game results. It is the aim of the club to have many and varied winners using this format as bowlers have fun in playing only draw bowls. Looking forward to great numbers of bowlers enjoying bowls at MBC every Friday 2.30pm for 3pm. Thanks to our local bowlers and visitors who continue to make our monthly pairs a very successful event.
