Every year, it seems our budgets are stretched tighter, and every year it seems like the major retailers kick off their Christmas marketing campaigns earlier and we can quickly get caught up in all the hype. Each year I know I make resolutions to shop smarter, support our local traders, and endeavour to make our celebrations more about the true meaning of Christmas, rather than simply an exchange of gifts. This year, here at GCNews we are taking a stand; our approach is a Christmas Grassroots Gift Giving Campaign. We are all about encouraging all our readers to give some thought to purchasing at least one gift from a local trader, whether it’s a voucher for a service, a handmade item from a local market, or a coupon to babysit for a friend so they can enjoy a meal at a local restaurant or café.

Celebrate the true meaning of the festive season with a gift from the heart, and not just a token present wrapped in shiny paper. Despite a petition bearing the signatures of 371 concerned locals, last week Council gave the green light to a 35 metre Optus tower located just 526 metres from Landsborough State School. Divisional councillor Jenny McKay said despite the community’s concerns about the perceived health risks associated with electromagnetic radiation emitted from telecommunications facilities, the proposed development was located in a dense industrial area, and met the community’s need for improved telecommunications facilities. “At the end of the day, we need good planning grounds to disallow this type of development in these areas, and they are just not there,” Cr McKay said. She said the Strategy and Planning committee had found there were sufficient planning grounds to allow the development of the tower, which at 35 metres, breached height restrictions, but because it was to be moved to the back of the proposed site, it would not adversely impact on the amenity of the area, and would be designed

It will be a bittersweet moment when well known and much loved locals Bill and Jane Thompson bid their final goodbyes to Glasshouse Country in the new year.

The self confessed ‘greenies’ have many fond memories of their time in Glasshouse Mountains, which has seen them involved in a myriad of local committees, groups and causes, most of which have been driven by their passion for the environment and the beauty and uniqueness of this area. For the Thompsons', the decision to move from what was to be the last place they called home, has been a difficult one at best, but better than the alternative, when the Queensland Government resumes their land at the start of the new year. Their 10 hectare property, a former custard apple farm in the heart of Glass House, will eventually become the foundations for the new rail duplication project, and rather than be witness to the demise of their 40 year love affair with their land destroyed overnight by bulldozers, the pair have made the heart-wrenching decision to pull up stumps.

Bill and Jane Thompson now However, it’s a bright future that awaits them, one which fills them with anticipation and a renewed sense of passion, as they embark on yet another epic adventure. Bill and Jane have purchased 700 hectares of native vegetation in Western Australia’s Gondwana Link, one of the largest and most ambitious conservation projects in the country where, according to Bill, he intends to plant at least half a million trees. He’s also pretty excited to think that the closest traffic lights to their new property will be no less than 160 kilometres away. While the couple both agree they’ll miss the lifestyle offered by the region and the strong friendships they have forged over the years, they are excited by the new challenges awaiting them, which will include rain harvesting. For those who want to say to goodbye to Bill and Jane, a special event has been planned for Saturday, December 10, at the Spirit of Cobb and Co, Old Gympie Road, Glass House Mountains, between 2.00pm - 5.00pm, where locals are encouraged to drop by for a cuppa or a glass of cheer and bid a fond farewell to this pair of much loved locals. The BreastScreen Queensland Sunshine Coast Service mobile unit will be located at Beerwah Community Hall, providing breast cancer screening for eligible women until November 30. Dr Deborah Pfeiffer, BreastScreen Queensland Sunshine Coast Service Medical Director said it was essential women heeded messages about the importance of having a regular breast screen. “Women aged 50 to 69 years are particularly encouraged to have a free breast screen every two years, but women aged 40 to 49 years and those 70 and over are also eligible for free screening at a BreastScreen Queensland Service,” Dr Pfeiffer said. BreastScreen Queensland Services are the only nationally-accredited breast cancer screening services in Queensland. The mobile van has the same state-of-the-art equipment as the static sites. Appointments are one-on-one with specially trained female health professionals and breastscreens are read independently by two doctors. “Bringing the mobile BreastScreen van to Beerwah means that local women don’t have to travel to find a quality service,” explained Trish Burr, Senior Radiographer on the mobile van. “To make it even easier for working women, we have Saturday appointments available on November 26.” A doctor’s referral is not required. Pathway to provide direct link between Beerwah and Australia Zoo

Last weekâ€™s Steve Irwin Day celebrations were cause for additional excitement, with Sunshine Coast Council announcing the construction of a new pathway to link Australia Zoo and Beerwah. Divisional councillor Anna Grosskreutz said council had committed $500,000 towards the project, which will run along the western side of Steve Irwin Way and link up with the existing pathway between Beerwah and Landsborough. She said it was essential infrastructure that would provide more options for locals and visitors to travel between Beerwah and Australia Zoo. The pathway is expected to feature interpretive signage to highlight local flora and fauna, and will offer the potential to develop further eco-tourism opportunities. Council is currently in discussions with the Department of Transport and Main Roads to ensure the trail receives the appropriate approvals and expects that works will start in March 2012. Â

The Beerwah State School Senior Choir and School Captains were invited to attend and perform at the 2011 Remembrance Day ceremony recently held at the Beerwah RSL. Many members of the local community were in attendance. The choir sang two songs, 'The Last Anzac' and 'Lest We Forget' during the ceremony as well as leading guests in singing the national anthem. Representing Beerwah State School in laying the wreath were school Captains, Teyha Prosser and Kane Dron. The choir sang beautifully and enjoyed morning tea in the shade after the ceremony.

The lovely ladies of the Busy Bee Café at the Landsborough State School are kept very busy in their new premises located at the front of their new hall that was officially opened recently. The workers definitely reflect the tuckshop’s name – Busy Bee Café, as it was difficult to get the ‘all action’ women to stop preparing sandwich fillings and baking for a moment to take their photo. Tuckshop convener Kylie said that they are very happy with their new facilities and one of the things that they really love is being able to use some of the veggies grown in the students’ garden on their lunches.

Recently Beerwah State High School held their 20th annual Awards Night. This just so happened to coincide with the 20th year that Beerwah’s academic elite have managed to stave off the Awards Night organisers’ stress induced heart attacks with their mild attentiveness. It was a night to celebrate the achievements and hard work of a number of students throughout the school. Also the Year 11’s who applied for leadership positions in 2012 were put out of their misery, finally, (the results can be viewed on the school website). This year was by far the best Awards Night I have attended; the routine was given a shakeup, the speeches were ‘short and sweet’, the delivery of certificates and medals were more efficient and there were regular intervals in which students' efforts in The Arts were showcased. You see, school events are extremely different from a student’s perspective, especially seniors. Those of us seasoned veterans who have been privileged enough to have attended multiple Awards Nights take a lot of pleasure from noting the endearing nervousness of some in the younger grades, and even some of the teachers. I particularly enjoyed the two dance performances by Beerwah’s Dance Company and the slideshow concerning and promoting the various improvements in our school. Overall I would rate this Awards Night a B+ and would like to say congratulations to all those who were deserving of an award!

Community Group Updates Maleny Neighbourhood Centre Maleny Neighbourhood Centre is inviting people with green thumbs, or an interest in acquiring such, to come together and participate in the ongoing development of our Neighbourhood garden space. We encourage anyone interested in gardening, backyard food production, food security concepts, permaculture, building local knowledge, design and loads more to join us and share their knowledge and skills with others or to learn something new. We will be having a garden blitz to get things going on Thursday, December 1 from 9.00am – 12.00noon followed by a barbeque lunch. We are also offering a range of ‘gardening’ workshops at the Neighbourhood Centre over the coming weeks. At our recent meeting final arrangements were made for BWG display stand at the Sunshine Coast Authors Book Fair at Maroochydore on November 12. This was followed by discussions on stories being read. These were an article by Trevor on Australian history, followed by an interesting poem by Ann. David wrote about ‘Writer’s Block’, while Joan caught everyone’s attention with ‘Learning Curl’. Eric’s story was ‘No Star is Born’, Barbara philosophised with ’Floods’, and Betty related ‘Inescapable Uruguay’. These were followed by discussions on group actions and activities next year. The next day the BWG display at the Sunshine Coast Authors Book Fair was staffed by several members who found the event rewarding either in learning or in selling BWG anthologies. Providing opportunities for writers to present their work and receive feedback, meetings usually take place at Beerwah Library on the second and fourth Friday of each month. Next meeting will be January 27. Whether you are a writer, or just interested in writing, this is a friendly welcoming group whose members range from beginners to accomplished, published authors. Caloundra Family History Research Inc Contributed by Roz Kuss

The Caloundra Family History Research group held its final general meeting for 2011 on November 17. The meeting opened with Betty Cristaudo reading her Lorrie Barzdo Writers Award entry of ‘Denham’s Medal’. What a story. Her ancestor’s war medal was found with a metal detector in a forest, by a stranger, who then searched for decades until he found the owner’s family. The medal is now in Betty’s hands, fully restored, displayed proudly and ready to be worn at Anzac parades by her family members. With the WWI Armistice commemorated on the 11th as Remembrance Day, fellow member Ian Edwardson then gave his talk, also with a military content, on ‘After the War to End all Wars’. With many members keenly obtaining the military history of WWI soldiers from the now open records on the National Archives website, the talks by both Betty and Ian were a most interesting segment of the meeting. Margaret Ridings informed the meeting on the happenings of ‘This Day in History’ through the ages, then later during the proceedings, the Committee gave an impromptu rendition of ‘The Twelve Days of Christmas for Genealogists’. The annual Christmas raffle was drawn and three huge hampers full of Christmas goodies were won by two happy members and a member’s relative and June Blackburn read ‘Who am I?’, a funny, family history poem. A sumptuous Christmas themed afternoon tea concluded the group’s last formal meeting for 2011. There is no general meeting in December and the research rooms will close at 12.30pm on Saturday, December 3 and re-open on Thursday, January 12, at 9.30am. The first general meeting for the new year will be Thursday, January 19 at 1.30pm. Rotary Club of Glasshouse Mountains Contributed by Bob McLean Another week of success for the Rotary Club of Glasshouse Mountains with a presentation of ‘Pride in Workmanship Awards’ to Graham Cheal, John Nisbett, Allan Ross, John and Aileen Winterhoff and the Beerwah Police Team. The awards are to recognise members of the Glasshouse Country community for the level of service, which does not make them stand out but sees them as outstanding. The awards were presented by President Klaus Schiemann and assisted by Vocational Service Director Sue Brumpton. Graham Cheal was recognised for his many years of service to the Glasshouse Country Emergency Service, John Nisbett was recognised not just for his jovial demeanour but for his many years of service to Community Recycling Inc and Beerwah Peachester Sub-Branch of the RSL. Allan Ross is another one of those members of the community who we expect to be there for us when we need a trip to hospital, as officer in charge of the Beerwah Ambulance Station as well as his long involvement with the Scouting movement. When you need dedication to a life-long passion, John and Aileen Winterhoff have an untiring commitment to the Glass House Mountains Community Hall. The Beerwah Police were also recognised, although it wasn’t possible for a representative to be present. The Rotary Club is privileged to recognise the selfless service of the recipients of the awards who each received a plaque and a 'Rotary Humanity in Motion' book. The club was also pleased to present the prize to the winners of the 2011 Rotary Melbourne Cup fundraiser, Frank and Wilma Petts, Rotary thanks all those who gave support by purchasing tickets this year. An update from the Mooloolah Valley Country Club Committee When the present committee was elected in June 2011, we undertook the position on the understanding that it would be in a caretaker capacity until a new committee was elected a couple of months later. However, we were not aware of the enormity of the situation that would unfold before us. As such, we have felt it necessary to extend our tenure until a more practical time in the not too distant future (hopefully). Re: Asking the questions (GCNews, November 16)

The questions proposed are obviously of interest to Steve and I thank him for raising these issues. I will comment briefly on my style so you all know me and how I will represent you in Div1 and the Sunshine Coast. The questions cover different levels of government, Local and State, and I will work with the representatives from which ever to enable a problem to be resolved. I will take this information on board and over the next few months leading up to the local government elections, I will be manning my mobile office/listening post in each of the communities to meet the locals. I will seek their opinion enabling me to formulate a proposal to address the issue. I have spent my life in the service of people, either in community service or business. The lesson I was taught very early is you can’t repair anything unless you know the whole problem. ‘Bob Builds Bridges’ is my slogan so with all of the information we can find a way over a problem; it may just take a little time. I am only one opinion in this community and I will listen and provide an answer when I have all of the evidence. You can be rest assured I will gather the evidence and provide an opinion. Community Gardens I recently accompanied a group of local residents for a visit to the Northey Street City Farm at New Farm. The farm offers a range of educational activities, together with opportunities for people to learn about permaculture practices and experience the life of urban farming. The farm has been developed for people to enjoy and participate in using the principals of permaculture; it is also intended to be a demonstration site where people of all ages can learn from practical, hands-on experience. Northey Street City Farm is a not-for-profit community organisation, situated on the banks of Brisbane’s Breakfast Creek in Windsor; they have more than 1,500 exotic and native bush trees, bush tuckers plants, shrubs and ground covers have been planted on the four hectare farm site since its inception in April 1994. Queensland storm season Council and the region’s emergency services are getting ready for the storm season with a ‘Spring Departure’ disaster management exercise which took place last week. The exercise tested the readiness of the Sunshine Coast Disaster Local Management Group (LDMG) for this year’s storm season with a desk top cyclone scenario during which residents will need to be evacuated. The LDMG is made up of representatives from state and local government agencies, and other providers, including council, Emergency Management Queensland, Queensland Police Service, Queensland Fire and Rescue Service, State Emergency Service, Red Cross and Energex. This annual exercise is an important test of the LDMG’s readiness for disaster but it is also the trigger for us all to check if we are personally ready for the storm season. The January floods showed just how quickly tragedies can happen so it’s vital that everyone is prepared for anything mother-nature can produce. Daily dose of dairy boosts mental performance A new study suggests frequent intake of dairy foods is linked to better mental performance. Researchers from the University of South Australia and America’s University of Maine analysed dietary habits and mental function of 972 US adults. Consuming dairy products such as milk, cheese and yogurt at least once a day was associated with greater performance in mental functions including verbal memory, visual-spatial memory, organisation and abstract reasoning, compared with those who consumed dairy less frequently. Less-frequent consumption of dairy foods was associated with significantly more depressive symptoms, lower folate levels and an increased prevalence of cardiovascular disease and high blood pressure. While the underlying mechanisms of dairy’s benefits on mental performance are unknown, the authors suggest the unique nutrient content might play a role. “Dairy foods contain a number of important nutrients such as calcium, whey protein, vitamin D, magnesium and phosphorus,” said lead researcher Georgina Crichton. “There is evidence that these nutrients might assist in weight and fat reduction, and in the control of blood pressure and diabetes. “As our findings remained significant after controlling for cardiovascular risk factors, perhaps some of these nutrients are having a direct effect on brain function,” Ms Crichton said. The researchers reviewed earlier research and identified eight other studies reporting associations between dairy food intake and mental function. They noted that the studies consistently show greater intakes of milk and dairy products are associated with better general cognitive (mental) function. Dairy Australia Dietitian, Glenys Zucco said these new results were promising and warranted further investigation. “Mental decline and dementia is an increasing problem for Australia’s ageing population. But growing evidence suggests lifestyle and health factors such as dietary intake could promote better mental function,” said Ms Zucco. “Higher intakes of dairy foods have been shown to provide a number of health benefits, and promoting better mental performance might be one to add to the list in the future,” she said. www.gcnews.com.au

When discussing your skills, experiences and accomplishments, don’t hesitate to use relevant anecdotes from all facets of your life. Even classroom activities, such as group projects, can provide good examples to employees of how you can contribute. • When it comes to interviews, the key word is relevance. Out and About

Farewell to our senior students It was a momentous week last week for Year 12 students across the state and no less for our seniors here in Glasshouse Country. A total of 22 students, 11 males and 11 female students, graduated from Glasshouse Country Christian College, while 176 graduated from Beerwah State High. Both schools celebrated with special formal events during the week, culminating with a traditional ‘clap out’ ceremony last Friday. This week, we’ve brought you a selection of photos from Glasshouse Country Christian College, where the graduating students were treated to canapés and drinks by the Year 10 and 11 hospitality students at the school prior to their formal function at the House of Laurels in Maleny. Farewell Bill and Jane Thompson It will be the Glasshouse Country area’s loss and Western Australia’s gain when Bill and Jane Thompson leave to start the next stage of their lives at the beginning of the New Year. As well as sharing a long family history in the region, Bill and Jane have had active participation and contact with a number of organisations, many with an environmental focus. Both have been involved with groups such as GMAN, SCEC, Barung, TRAQs, the Conondale Range Committee, and many others, participating in a variety of roles. Jane’s interest in wild flowers, grasses etc. along with her talents as a botanical artist have assisted in the identification and recording by the Herbarium of rare and endangered plant species particular to the Glasshouse Mountains region. Bill has consistently put forward his views on development and environmental issues to Sunshine Coast mayors and councillors, and State Government Departments, and has worked tirelessly in many different ways toward the enhancement and protection of the natural landscape of the area. A few weeks ago I was approached by Glass House Mountains local Steve Ralph who was keen to regularly contribute a list of questions for candidates to answer in relation to the upcoming Local Government elections to be held sometime before the end of March 2012. I thought this was a great way over the next few months for Council candidates to see what some of the issues are across Division 1. It will also give readers the opportunity to see how individual candidates respond to the same issues, as a way of getting an insight into their approach. The plan is to run three to four questions to candidates about a general theme in individual townships, every few weeks until the election. I have made the offer to each of the candidates to respond to the questions printed last week in our letter’s page (and reprinted on this page) that Steve had asked about Glass House Mountains Township. Four of the candidates have taken up the offer and their responses are included on this page, the newest candidate Bob McLean has chosen not to participate in responding to the questions – and as you will have seen his response to the offer has been included on the letters page. Our next ‘Asking the questions’ will be featured in the first edition after our Christmas break on January 18. We hope you enjoy this approach to getting to know our Council Candidates a little bit better.

Asking the questions Hello, I am Steve Ralph, Tourist operator of the Australian Teamsters Hall of Fame, Glass House Mountains. I have been living in Glass House Mountains for over 22 years, and during that time I have been involved in many local issues. At the next council election in March 2012 we’ll definitely see our area have a new Councillor and I would like to ask the candidates of Division 1 their views on what they can do constructively for this community. I have seen a lot of unfinished projects of safety and second rate standard for Division One. I also believe a higher standard and vision is desperately needed. Questions

1. Do the candidates feel that Glass House Mountains centre upgrade is complete? 2. Is access to Glass House railway station for vehicular and pedestrian movements satisfactory? 3. Is parking at the school for student set down and pick up adequate and safe? 4. Is access from the township to Steve Irwin Way (Glasshouse Tourist Route) safe and acceptable?

Ann Ross Since the 1890s, Glass House Township has grown predominantly around the railway, with roads being built to meet needs of the time. Today it accommodates a diverse mix of vehicles and businesses.

1. NOT YET. The completion of recent roadworks has highlighted the urgent need for directional signage, and increased traffic flow has exacerbated congestion problems on Bruce Parade and Reed Street. Any future major works in this area must be considered in conjunction with IGA’s proposed new site development. 2. NO. I have concerns with the bus shelter in regard to its location and the level of pedestrian safety it offers, especially to school children. The proposed 2031 rail upgrade will trigger major changes to this precinct and has stalled temporarily any major works funding. In the interim, minor work could improve safety and allow better access to the railway and CBD from both sides of the station. 3. Response time has not allowed me to gather statistics from relevant authorities etc to form an unqualified comment. However, approximately 71 car parks are accessible from a pedestrian footpath behind the safety barrier and the traffic lights are certainly an improvement on the previous ‘lollypop’ system. Tighter State legislation relating to traffic speeds will take effect in 2012.

I will also be asking questions in the coming weeks for all the other township communities in Division 1 and I look forward to hearing the candidate’s responses to these questions.

4. NO. To remedy this, I understand that funding sourced from the Queensland Transport and Roads Investment Program has recently been approved to upgrade the intersection, including but not limited to road widening and lights.

The Glasshouse Mountains Centre upgrade is on its way to completion. There’s still a large amount of signage needed. In regards to cars reversing from their parks and travelling across a lane of incoming traffic, this needs to be revised and arrows placed on the road, to indicate direction of travel.

Steve's concerns stem back to inadequate planning. We have two standards: one for new developments in which every detail is recorded on a master-plan. The second is for existing townships that means we lurch from reactive fix-ups and second rate standards hoping nothing really bad happens.

• No, currently it is still not complete: there are no pedestrian crossing line markings or adequate signage; a pathway indicates for pedestrians to cross over Burgess Street to the tourist info centre; the entry’s are poorly signed, etc. Shopkeepers have had little to celebrate since the changes.

The access to the railway station is a shambles. Tourists and locals have all formed their own route. The roundabout has no signage and some motorists, I’m sure don’t even know it exists. A lack of pathway for pedestrians, means that mothers with prams, kids and elderly are forced to walk along the road. Motorists are forced to dodge parked cars and pedestrians.

In the past (because with lots of space and low populations) we could use common sense to manage risks. That won't work anymore.

When it comes to school zones, I’m not going to try and pretend that I understand the frustration, but after speaking to Robyn and Michelle, both parents of Glasshouse Mountains School children, I have an understanding that it’s a nightmare. Parking needs to be extended and flow of traffic needs to be improved. The current design was good when I attended Glasshouse Primary many years ago, but the increase in children means better infrastructure needs to be implemented. The intersection into Glasshouse has been an issue for years, well ever since I can remember. Both my Grandparents have complained about it for the last 10 years. A councillor will need to work with the State Member, Andrew Powell, to place pressure on the Government to provide funding for the upgrade of the intersection. 24

Master planning and setting high standards are two of my key priorities. We need a lift in standards to do well out of regional growth rather than be overshadowed.

Q1: In a previous letter I pointed out that poor planning meant the upgrade created new problems. We need a fast tracked master plan to guide development of this iconic country township. Q2: In partnership with Queensland Rail, it's time to get rid of the old tree stumps, complete the network of pathways and crossings and organise the parking, drop-off and bus turn-arounds. Q3: On special event days it doesn't cope but most of the time there are spare parks and the drop-off zone works well. It's not a good idea to have haulage trucks rolling by a school but on the whole they seem responsible and we can cope while planning a better haulage network. Q4: No. I have raised this problem previously.

It's a difficult intersection at the best of times and fails at peak times. If I am successful it will be a major priority.

• No, Reed Street to the Train Station is an example of what not to do. A roundabout that may or may not be a roundabout and no signage. Along with the bus shed from last century. What you have is a patch of bitumen with no direction. • Passable, in recent years the parking to the area has been improved but has not kept pace with the needs of the user. Also the drainage needs to be fixed, because when it rains the pond fills up and becomes a traffic hazard. Then users like the Child Care Buses who have fallen through the cracks, of I’m not a big bus or private sedan, so where do we go? A suggestion has a designated shared zone in the parallel parking area and a crossing zone to it. Currently users of the parking, must lunge across to and fro to reach their own cars. • No, this is an intersection in need of attention. An intersection in need of traffic control and direction or, simply put, the intersection needs an overhaul. Why should we have to wait for multiple deaths before someone acts? The issue in all the questions that have been echoed from every person or business I have spoken to is the lack of direction, with minimums which have been set lower than the community expectations. www.gcnews.com.au

Not so silent night on December 17 Planning is now in full swing for the combined Community Christmas Carols which will be held at the Beerwah Sportsground on Saturday, December 17. The event is brought to you through the combined efforts of the local churches and it is all about bringing together families to share in the traditional fun of Christmas Carols. So why not come along with your family, friends and neighbours? All you will need is your camp chairs or a rug and maybe, if you’re very organised, a picnic to enjoy. Brown Tree Snake (photo by Kira Wheatland) Chris Hanna, says there are some simple steps people can take to lessen the chance of a meeting a snake in their backyard. “To reduce the chances of an encounter: • remove rubbish piles and sheets of tin providing shelter • wear long trousers and protective footwear in long grass (leather work boots are best) • carry a torch outside at night • wear sturdy leather gloves when gardening in high risk areas • get to know what species of snakes are found in your area • don’t try and catch them or kill them – just let them be. Stand still and let the snake move away from you. "If you live in a bushy area, it’s a good idea to be familiar with snakebite first aid, including the proper use of compression bandages – just in case,” explained Chris. Snakes are protected fauna under the Nature Conservation Act and cannot be taken from the wild. Keeping a snake requires a licence from the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service. “We live in a naturally blessed area, with an amazing array of native wildlife, and all our reptilian neighbours are just as important as are the furry and feathered ones,” says Chris. It’s really starting to warm up now and snakes are being seen more often in and around backyards and local bushland. Here at the GCNews office, we’ve been taking phone calls from people who have had an encounter with a snake of one kind or another and they’ve asked us to alert our readers to watch out for them. According to the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service, there are over 25 different species of snakes found in the Glasshouse Country area. The most commonly seen snakes are generally the least dangerous – carpet python, common tree snake, brown tree snake and yellow-faced whip snake. However, Australia has many of the world’s most venomous snakes and some of them may be found in and around our area, Eastern Brown Snake including (photo by Chris Hanna) the eastern brown, red-bellied black and rough scaled snakes. Nowadays, snakes aren’t just bush creatures, they can be found in many suburban backyards as well. Of the dangerous snakes, the eastern brown snake is the most commonly encountered. Red-bellied black snakes are frog-eaters and have become rarer since the introduction of the poisonous cane toad. Most victims of snakebites (95 per cent of them) are those who have tried to kill or interfere with the animal. So the best advice from the experts is to leave them well alone, and walk the other way. Snakes will move considerable distances in search of food, shelter and a mate. What plant is this? I received a letter from June of Glass House Mountains, who has a loved hanging plant but is unsure what it is. Congratulations to Jenny Hobson, Rae Farrell and Di Hunt who defeated Gaye Rohweder, Marleen Bertram and Chris Freshwater 27/20 in the final of the 2011 Ladies’ Graded and Drawn Triples on Wednesday. In the social games, W Blackbourne and J McSwain def J Albrecht and M Dawes, and G Young and M Lehmann def L Craven and D Hume. Thursday morning’s game of ‘Open Pairs’ was won by Bob Coxon and Kerry Capern with two wins and 44 points. The runners-up with the highest points score in either game were Bray Howard and Brendan Edwards with 28 points in Game two. The afternoon game was won by Jack Timm and Mac Townson with two wins and 46 points and the runners-up were Brian Saunders and Graham Turton with the highest points score of 24 in Game two. The semi-final of the 2011 Mixed Pairs Club Competition on Saturday resulted in M Duff and S Wilson defeating A Howard and W Tumbridge, and D Hunt and R Siegle defeating M and G Lehmann. Friday Night Tennis – Great to see everyone enjoying the tennis on Friday with some very good matches for the finals. Hope everyone had a great night. The club would like to thank Iris Tilbury and Beerwah Trophies for their donations of trophies. Players who have now been playing for five to six years received certificates and a voucher. Eagle Boys donated the vouchers so a big thank you to them. Playing for six years were Zed Denny, Ashleigh Laverty, Annie McClure and Anita Clifford and for five years was Hannah Trudgett. So congratulations to these players and we hope to see many more receive these awards. The season will commence again around February 2012 so we hope to see as many of you back again for another season of tennis and some new faces as well. Well the season has been only over for three months and the club has already started some pre season training. We are training on Thursdays at 7.00pm only at the moment and playing six to eight a side games so if you are new to the area and enthusiastic for a run, pop down and introduce yourself to Terry the senior coach. The invite is open to all men 17 and up and women 16 and up interested in playing with the club next season. We already have had 16 players who have turned up so come down. Also we are looking for nominations for a 1st division women’s coach for the coming season so if anyone is out there that might be interested in this position please phone Frank 0419 757 584. On November 29 we are having our AGM starting at 6.30pm at the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club, all positions are vacant so anyone interested in doing something at the club is welcome, we have a number of positions that need filling every year.
