Hi Everyone... This week we are more than a little focused on Australia Day and all the local events that are taking place as part of the annual celebration. Our front cover features a couple of youngsters who had the opportunity to enjoy the fun and games on offer at the Hinterland Aussie Day Expo last year. I reckon it’s safe to assume that there will be even more fun to be had this year at the Maleny event, and at the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club, the Beerwah Hotel and the Mooloolah Valley Country Club, as well as at picnic grounds and in backyards throughout the area. I have to say that after reading about all the different activities planned at the various venues I am pretty confident that if an international tourist stumbled upon these events they would be a little surprised at what can be turned into a competition. At the Beerwah Hotel you can show your talent in the Australian slang, cooeeing or lamington eating competitions, while at the sports club at Glasshouse it’s not just lamingtons but a pie eating competition as well. Wow - we are such a talented bunch us Aussies! Whatever you decide to do on the day, I hope you enjoy it.

Local News Lights to bust roundabout congestion If you travel into Caloundra, watch out for the new traffic light congestion controllers at the Nicklin Way roundabout. Minister for Transport and Main Roads Mark Bailey said the $1 million metered lights would cut waiting times at peak periods at the Caloundra Road, Nicklin Way and Pelican Waters Boulevard intersection. “The signals will reduce delays across all legs of the roundabout,” Mr Bailey said. “They will also make it easier for emergency vehicles to negotiate the intersection. “Unlike normal traffic lights, the metering signals will only operate when traffic builds up. This will allow traffic to freely enter the roundabout from the busiest approach and reduce excessive queuing. “Specialised detectors have been installed to manage queue lengths on each entry to the roundabout. At all other times, the metering signals will not operate and motorists can enter the roundabout using normal roundabout rules. “TMR will monitor the signals over the next month to ensure they are working as efficiently as possible.” Mr Bailey said the roundabout was known as one of the busiest intersections on the Sunshine Coast. “These metering signals will help balance delays during peak afternoon hours and congested periods,” he said. “We expect this will also bring relief to motorists exiting the Caloundra CBD.”

Motorists will see two things as they approach the roundabout. The first is an illuminated electronic sign advising if the metering signals are in use and the second is the actual roundabout metering signals. The signals have yellow and red phases (there will be no green phase): Yellow phase = motorists are required to stop, unless it is unsafe to do so. Red phase = motorists are required to stop and wait for the signals to turn off before entering the roundabout. Once the signals are off, normal road rules apply for giving way when entering a roundabout.

Local News Are you up for a clean-up? Registrations for 2019 Clean Up Australia Day are now open and a number of local clean up sites are already registered, or planning is well under way. There is still plenty of time for you to check out rubbish hotspots in your neighbourhood and challenge your friends and family to make 2019 the year when change starts with you. Businesses are encouraged to focus their action on Tuesday, February 26, with schools running their clean up on Friday, March 1. Community groups across the country will be involved on the weekend of March 2-3. Participating in one or more of these events is the perfect opportunity to join with family, friends, neighbours and colleagues to remove all the rubbish accumulating in your local park, bushland, beaches and waterways before it kills our wildlife.

Local graduate on top of the world University of the Sunshine Coast sport and exercise science graduate and Maleny local Nathan Dodd is aiming high after a short-term stint as the first international coach in Nepal’s T20 cricket league. Nathan recently returned to Australia after being recruited as a head coach in the Everest Premier League, which drew cricketing legends from around the world to Kathmandu last month. Nathan’s Pokhara Rhinos side failed to take out the top prize, but the experience has fired up the Cricket Australia high performance (level 3) coach’s desire for a long-term career coaching cricket at a national or international level. “I enjoyed learning from working with elite international players such as English all-rounder Paul Coughlin, South African cricketer Richard
Levi and Scotland captain Kyle Coetzer, as well as Nepalese internationals Binod Bhandari and Shakti Gauchan,” Nathan said. The 38-year-old former English county cricketer had a career in finance before enrolling at USC and secured a role as senior coach of the Australian Cricket team for players with an intellectual disability during his final year of study in 2017. “My USC degree broadened my skillset and provided a thorough understanding around strength and conditioning, injury recovery, statistics and performance analysis,” he said. “This allows me to combine modern-day coaching practices with a scientific viewpoint,” said Nathan, who has also coached in Queensland’s T20 Premier League and is a consultant coach with Parramatta in the NSW Premier League. His impressive track record led to Rhinos’ management approaching him at the end of last year to help raise the benchmark of domestic cricket in Nepal. Nathan said the T20 format, short preparation time and having to adapt quickly to a different culture and language presented some interesting challenges. “With T20 cricket being so short, you always need a bit of luck to go your way in the tight games,” he said. “It's also very different to coaching a squad that you are with for six or so months, where you have time to know the players’ strengths and weaknesses better.
“I didn’t have time to do much actual skills coaching so my vision was for our team to be the most attacking and exciting team in the tournament, so that every young player in Nepal will want to play for the Rhinos in the future.” Nathan hopes the role will lead to a long-term relationship with the Pokhara Rhinos, including facilitating pathways for talented Nepalese players to develop their individual games by playing competitively in Australia. Since returning from Nepal, Nathan has been coaching the Australian Cricket team for players with an intellectual disability at a two-week training camp in Geelong as it prepares for an international series in Brisbane later this year. “I am also straight back in to my consulting coaching position with Parramatta in NSW Premier Cricket and hope to do some work with the NSW Blues over the next few months,” he said. “I love cricket coaching, however it is very competitive at a domestic or international level, so you have to keep improving.”

It’s ‘Find a Frog February’ time again In February last year a staggering 2,400 frog records came in from 140 ‘froggers’ looking for our amphibious friends in the Mary River catchment from Maleny to Burrum Heads. The Mary River Catchment Coordinating Committee (MRCCC) is asking for community assistance to find where and what type of frogs are living in and around the Mary River catchment. Volunteers will step into their own outdoor adventure, take photos and record calls of frogs, and then send them in to have them identified. Everyone can help to care for our frogs by increasing our knowledge of their whereabouts and their habitats. So get ready for the MRCCC citizen science annual frog survey. Go to www.mrccc.org.au/frog-in-february for all the information you need to get involved. Download the Australian Museum's FrogID app onto your smart phone and join the ‘Find a Frog in February-MRCCC’ group so you are ready to send in your recordings of frog calls. Follow MRCCC on Facebook for ‘Frog of the day’ videos so you can get your eye in – and your ears attuned to the sounds they make. Face-to-face frog workshops with Eva Ford, MRCCC project officer, will be held on February 1 at Noosa Parks Association. Contact the MRCCC office on 5482 4766 for more details. Teachers can also get ready to involve their students in meaningful scientific data collection. There are some great teaching resources on the FrogID website and you can set up your own group on FrogID or use the MRCCC data sheets as a class exercise. Whether you use the data sheets from the MRCCC website or the FrogID app, all data collected throughout the Mary River catchment will go to the Queensland WildNet database for future research and planning efforts. The first 100 MRCCC data sheets submitted will be rewarded with a free copy of the Queensland Museum's ‘Frogs of South-East Queensland’. Exhibition is time not wasted Jim Cox has spent his entire working life in the arts – for 14 years as a graphic designer (at a time when to be successful in that career needed more than just software competency) and for 24 years as a tertiary level fine arts lecturer at Brisbane and Townsville TAFEs and at the Queensland College of the Arts. Recently Jim has found himself busier than ever as he visually documents the important things in his life, reflecting his wide range of interests, values and sense of humour. Above all, what he values most are good design, draftsmanship and technical ability. Jim said most of his time was spent doing artwork of one form or another. “I have never been consistent ... it is not always painting. It may be sculpture; it may be a book illustration; or just doodling; or jotting down something that interests me at the time; an idea for later. I always have a sketch book on the go,” he said. The works on display in his exhibition ‘Time not wasted’ reflect his wide range of interests and technical expertise across a range of media – from detailed depictions of intricate

This collection consists of favoured memories of time and place and the images are selfexplanatory. “They have all appealed to me strongly at the time of production and I look back over them with a feeling that time has not been lost,” Jim said. In the Zonta world January is Amelia Earhart month. Amelia was the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic and she was also a member of the Zonta club of Buffalo New York. The Zonta club of Blackall Range invited A320 captain Lauren Smith, a Queensland woman now based in Melbourne with Jetstar, to be a guest speaker at its January meeting. Lauren travelled to Maleny from Melbourne with her friend Arabella Haig, the daughter of Zontian Dorothy Haig, who organised the talk. Lauren told the meeting she first became interested in flying because her father was a pilot “so I was always around airports”. She learned to fly at an aero club at Archerfield in the usual single engine Cessna 152s and 172s. Her first jobs took her to the Northern Territory where she moved to Darwin to a job flying ‘fly in fly out’ workers to mines and oil rigs. “When learning to fly with Jetstar we had to fly into Queenstown in New Zealand, one of the most difficult airports to navigate, not only because of where it is situated, but also the unforgiving terrain and there is no radar,” she said. Zontians asked Lauren many questions about women’s conditions, pay, hours and whether she ever felt threatened. “Not at all, we have the same rosters as the men, the same pay rates and we do not have penalty rates or overtime, nor do the men; and Jetstar has a policy of a 50/50 ratio of men and women,” she told the meeting. “In the cockpit, of course, the language is an established pattern with our checks and responses always the same. There is no place for gender politics here.”

She would not only be amazed at the actual A320 aircraft, but she would also be proud of Captain Lauren Smith, of Queensland, who has fulfilled a dream and flies it ‘in the left-hand seat’.

New op shop is blooming marvellous
By Sonia Clark A brand new Bloomhill Cancer Care Op Shop recently opened in Beerwah and the community response has been overwhelming. Since opening its doors on December 15, store manager Nicole Croft said she has been thrilled with the support shown to the Sunshine Coast based charity. The store already has a great team of locally based volunteers, with helpers coming from throughout the Glasshouse Country hinterland region, from Peachester to Mooloolah. “Before we even opened our doors last month, we had 15 wonderful ‘vollies’ [volunteers] offer their time to help out in our new store,” Nicole said. “Since opening we’ve had so many customers come in to show their support by shopping with us and spreading the love about the store – it’s been amazing,” she said. This is the 11th Bloomfield Op Shop to open on the coast, offering customers a mix of affordable pre-loved quality clothing, books, bric-a-brac, manchester and more. Income generated from the op shops provides more than 80% of the funding required to support and enhance the life of people with cancer. Nicole said that with an increasing focus on both local and global environmental issues, op shops offered a number of sustainable benefits. “Op shopping is all about recycling and reusing, which is so important when you look at the world’s environmental issues today. “Customers who shop with us are also supporting services that help local people right here on the coast with integrated cancer care,” she said. The store is open from 9.30am-4pm Monday to Friday, and on Saturday from 9am-12.30pm. Donations can be dropped off instore during store hours and a free local Beerwah pickup service is available on Thursdays for larger saleable items by contacting the distribution centre on 5445 6858. Electrical items in good working condition are accepted and there is a current need for more bric-a brac items and good quality handbags. A free community presentation will be hosted by All In One Fitness Centre to support the excellent work of Beyond Blue. The community awareness initiative will be held at Vianta Café Beerwah on Thursday, January 31. The presentation, from 2-3pm, will feature a guest speaker and support information for those wishing to learn more. All donations raised from the day will go directly to Beyond Blue. The session will be led by Beyond Blue volunteer speaker James Hill (pictured) who will talk about his own experience and how Beyond Blue is here to help. Local Beerwah businesses have also generously donated raffle prizes to assist with fundraising. All In One Fitness Centre owner Taz Calandruccio said that his goal was to have more of these free events for the local community, and to shine a light on the foundations that are doing amazing work. Regular bingo sessions will be held from Friday, February 1, at the Maleny RSL. The hall will open at 9.30am and games will start at 10am. The bingo will be a collaborative effort between Maleny RSL and the Lions Club of Maleny and will start with a $100 jackpot as well as extra prizes. Contributed by Jody Blackburn The Landsborough School of Arts Memorial Hall hosted a family movie night just before Christmas. Despite the steamy weather, 46 kids and their families came along with pillows and beanbags to watch ‘Arthur Christmas’ while enjoying burgers, cold drinks and popcorn. The event was initiated and organised by local residents Naomi Keenan, Tamie Kacprazak and Melissa Burton, in collaboration with Landsborough Hall. Melissa said they were looking for a local family-friendly activity during the school holidays and, as they couldn’t find anything happening, decided to do it themselves with the help of the hall committee. Most of the families who attended were from the local area, but a couple of families travelled from Maroochydore and Caloundra. Tamie said the event received amazing feedback and she felt quite teary at the comments from one family. “They said they could never afford to take their kids to the movies so were very grateful for the event. This comment alone made the night worthwhile,” Tamie said. Naomi said that the night wouldn’t have been the success it was without the contribution of many local businesses and organisations. “We really appreciate all the local support we received and would like to thank the Rotary Club of Glasshouse Mountains, Buck’s Bakery, Meat @ Landsborough, Landsborough IGA, Katie Buckley Graphic Design, Pop Off Popcorn, Henry & Co, Landsborough – Love Where We Live, the Hinterland Community Development Program and the Landsborough Hall,” Naomi said. Based on the success of the event, Naomi, Tamie and Melissa are considering organising another activity for the next school holidays. If you’re interested in helping them, call Jody on 0491 205 266.
Conondale to Maleny Flexilink service improvements Travellers who use the Conondale to Maleny (via Witta) Flexilink transport service will have a new improved timetable from February 1. Flexilink services provide affordable, reliable and accessible public transport. The pre-booked services run three return trips per day, Monday to Saturday, and in most cases connect with other public transport services for onward journeys. Improvements to the Conondale to Maleny service from February 1, thanks to community feedback, include: • Monday to Friday evening service will depart Conondale 7pm, arrive Maleny 7.30pm and then return to Conondale. • Saturday and public holiday morning service will depart Conondale 9am, arrive Maleny 9.30am and then return to Conondale. • Saturday and public holiday midday service will depart Maleny 12.25pm, arrive Conondale 12.55pm and then return to Maleny. Flexilink services are funded by council's transport levy on a trial basis to determine the demand for bus services in areas with limited public transport. To book a Flexilink service phone 1300 511 163. Bookings must be made at least two hours ahead of departure or by 9pm the previous evening for the first morning service. Five New Year resolutions for your pool As pool owners, we can sometimes get into the habit of doing the bare minimum with our pools. This year, make some New Year resolutions to take better care of your swimming pool, keep it safer and enjoy it more. 1. Replace pool equipment Just like homes and cars, swimming pools need regular restoration to stay in top shape. The improvements you make to your pool can save you money in the long run and stress in the short run. Solar water heating is more cost-effective than a gas water heater as it uses the heat from the sun. To take full advantage of the solar panels, they must be positioned correctly. 4. Make it cleaner A couple of simple ways to make your pool cleaner in 2019 include: • Look after your garden - take the time to trim the trees and bushes around your pool. Test your pool’s water every fortnight Start the year on the right foot by getting your pool water tested every fortnight. This is particularly important through summer when you’re using your pool more frequently. Sunscreen, sweat and other oils can cause imbalance in your pool’s water and turn your pool cloudy or even green if left untreated. The aim is to improve and hone their football skills for the upcoming 2019 season and to also just have fun. About 40 youngsters making up five teams have been competing with all teams doing exceptionally well. There are only eight weeks of futsal remaining and the players are looking forward to the start of the 2019 football season at the end of March. Federal Member for Fisher My focus for Fisher
In 2018 the Australian Government delivered for the Sunshine Coast hinterland like never before. We committed $390 million to duplicating the North Coast rail line and provided millions more for a business case for high speed rail to Brisbane. We delivered funding for three new mobile phone black spot towers in Beerwah, Glass House Mountains and near Peachester. We supported Maleny’s beef farmers to use their land sustainably and funded more child care places in Beerwah, Landsborough and Glenview. We supported upgrades to the Palmwoods Memorial Hall and paid for new facilities and equipment at the Maleny District Sports and Recreation Club, Australia Zoo’s Wildlife Hospital, TS Centaur, Celebrate Glass House Country, and Beerwah Sportsground, among many other projects. I brought the Minister for Communications to the hinterland to listen to you about our telecommunications infrastructure, and organised free entry to Australia Zoo for local veterans on my Sunshine Coast Veterans Day. In 2019 I am committed to fighting to fast track the transport infrastructure projects we need, ease congestion on local roads and deliver new local facilities such as an aquatic centre for Maleny and renovations to the Glasshouse Country RSL sub-branch.

I hope everyone enjoyed a relaxing Christmas and New Year break and was able to spend some time rewinding and catching up with loved ones. My family made more memories with a couple of short trips, a week at the beach and, scarily, my eldest daughter Erin turning 16. Unfortunately for me, that means she will be getting her learner driver’s licence now, so if you see me out and about with a few more grey hairs than usual, you’ll know why! I’m confident 2019 is going to be a fantastic year for our area.

I am committed to doing even more to listen to local residents in 2019 and making it easier to travel around our region. That’s why this week I am cycling all over the electorate of Fisher, on my Tour de Fisher, hearing from local residents about the issues that matter to them and experiencing more of our region’s transport challenges firsthand. By the time you read this I will be half way through my tour, holding listening posts in 26 towns in Fisher. Earlier this week I was in Beerburrum, Glass House Mountains, Beerwah, Peachester, Witta and Conondale. On Wednesday, January 23 I am visiting Maleny, Montville, Palmwoods and Eudlo. If the Palaszczuk government is true to their word the North Coast rail duplication is due to begin towards the end of the year. I’m keen to see the finalisation of the D’Aguilar Highway roadworks at Woodford and I’ll be working with Transport and Main Roads to sort out the speed limits. There will be more grants, including my Local Heroes Grants, up for grabs to our sporting and community groups. I will keep working to ensure our communities stay safe with more police and police resources. Beating the heat
There’s a difference between normal heat and Queensland heat. Queensland heat is suffocating and while adults are often lucky enough to work in air conditioned offices, our kids are sweltering in the classroom. January is usually the hottest month of the year in Queensland, so in conjunction with Deb Frecklington and the Queensland LNP team, I’m renewing our push for all state schools to be air conditioned. Cool kids are smart kids, and cool teachers are happy teachers! Our kids are the future and our teachers an important gateway for them. Tennis helped build local communities
During this summer of tennis, it’s a great time to reflect on important pioneering tennis enthusiasts who contributed to the social and cultural landscape of our healthy, smart, creative area. A type of tennis has been played for centuries but it wasn’t until the development of the wooden racquet, strung with animal gut, and a more functional tennis ball that tennis became a very popular sport that anyone could play. It is unknown exactly when tennis started on the Sunshine Coast, but there was a report in 1908 of a sporting event that took place in Mr Henry Dyer’s paddock at Landsborough. Later, Mr Dyer was reported as the owner of a tennis court that became the hub for social tennis in Landsborough. In the 1920s, the Caversham (Landsborough) Tennis Club was formed. The Hillview Tennis Club members played at the Glenview State School tennis court, which was hard sandstone and marked out using lengths of twine and lime poured carefully from a can or an old kettle. Following the end of World War I, there was an accelerated expansion of tennis on the coast and hinterland, with new clubs forming and new courts built. The social fabric of the region, which was so fractured during the war, began to rebuild. The Maleny and District Tennis Association was formed in 1928 to advance and foster tennis. Not only did the association accomplish this but the impact on the social and cultural patterns of the region was remarkable. Reported in 1935, Mr and Mrs Wolfenden from the North Maleny Tennis Club lent their home to the Ellerslie Tennis Club for a night of games and dancing. Tennis has certainly changed over time. Associated social events are no longer part of the game, but in its pioneering days it was the one sporting activity that the whole family could participate in. The importance of social events to break down isolation and combat stress at difficult times was pivotal to the building and resilience of our local communities. Kindergarten program information evening 2019 is already shaping up to be an exciting year of learning, connection and interaction at Glasshouse Mountains Early Education Centre with a number of exciting initiatives planned. On Tuesday, February 5, from 5.30-6.30pm, the centre will be hosting a special kindergarten information evening. Centre coordinator Dee McCaan says the night will provide a useful forum to discuss what it means to start the kindy year (school readiness program). The evening will feature information on educational theories that support the numerous benefits acquired by children attending a kindergarten program and a chance for parents and carers to ask questions and find out more. All attendees will receive the free enrolment pack that includes the kindy uniform shirt and a library bag. Teachers from local schools have also been invited to answer any questions families may have on the night. “We are thrilled to be offering an exciting program for 2019 to our families at Glass House Mountains and surrounding areas,” Dee said. “We are fortunate to be offering Queensland kindergarten curriculum classes for 2019, led by our highly qualified educators such as our school readiness teacher, Miss Emma Coultis. Some of the benefits of enrolling in the centre’s early learning kindergarten program include flexible hours available for busy families from 6:30am–6:30pm and a school readiness program developed in partnership with local schools. Children have access to the latest technology and communication processors, eg, iPads and resources such as interactive white boards. Healthy eating choices and habits are actively promoted and healthy meals are provided as part of the daily fees. The centre prides itself on providing an engaging learning journey that supports the holistic and scaffolding approach to learning. Dee says that as each child is uniquely different, at Glasshouse Mountains Early Education Centre interests and styles of learning are modified to incorporate an individual learning experience to assist children achieve the necessary skills required before entering the prep year. Educational theories support the importance of the early learning kindergarten program which has a strong emphasis on the fundamentals such as language, literacy and mathematical concepts as well as the creative arts (art, music and dance), development of life skills, problem solving and investigation. Dee says that at Glasshouse Early Learning Centre, children learn through a range of play based learning activities including purposeful play, active hands-on learning, a developmental
approach and working collaboratively. “Kindergarten is a great tool for engaging with the community. We feel it is important for children to understand the roles people play in the community. We provide opportunities for children to engage with the local fire and police services, local schools and other important members of our community. We endeavour to find ways to promote a sense of belonging and encourage educators and children to participate in a variety of local and community events, Dee said. “We provide a secure environment to build the tools of understanding and appreciate the diversity of different approaches which cover a variety of learning developmental areas. In what’s becoming a highly anticipated local Australia Day fixture, the Glass House Mountains Sports Club is once again hosting its annual Show ‘n’ Shine. For just a gold coin donation entry price, come along and enjoy an awesome family day out that also supports your local sports club on Saturday, January 26. Registration for vehicle entries open at 8am ($10 per car registration), with winners’ trophies presented at 12noon. There will be raffles and prizes throughout the day and the popular barbeque on the field will be firing up a storm. The hugely popular Ultimate Monster Shows will be providing crowd favourite monster truck rides, and kids’ entertainment on the day includes a jumping castle, water slide castle and face painting all day. Cricket will be played on the top field and there will also be a pie/lamington eating competition. Abu Shadi is an ageing divorcee living in Christian Nazareth and his son Shadi is an architect living in Rome. This real life father and son are obliged to hand-deliver invitations to Abu Shadi's daughter's wedding, driving around in a battered Volvo, bickering and highlighting the huge divide between Palestinians living in Israel and those living abroad. Attitudes influenced by age, opportunities and politics are all explored through the father-son relationship. At times the underlying tension between the pair is bitter, but quite often the conflict is peppered with humour. The brilliant Palestinian writer/director, Annemarie Jacir, takes this opportunity to deftly explore the tension between the older man, who believes in maintaining cohesion and traditions through duty, and the son, who finds the whole process meaningless. In the Garden Soils ain’t soils
Driving down Steve Irwin Way to Glass House (like I do most days) you will see a ploughed strawberry paddock on the eastern side at the corner of Kings Road. At the moment, the colour of the exposed soil is amazing. But what I find more fascinating is how the soil colour changes from the rich red at the top of the slope to the ashen grey at the bottom. Soils across our region vary dramatically but their makeup depends on three things - the geology of that area; what’s happened to that part of the landscape over the millennia; and what’s happened there since we came along. Knowing a little about your soil is an important step in successful gardening. Different soil properties will impact on the things you can grow and what you have to do to keep them growing. In the main, the soils in our region have been influenced by volcanic lava eruptions that formed the rich black and red soils of the Maleny plateau and surrounds; sub-surface magma intrusions that formed the Glass House Mountains and the high silica bearing rocks they are made from; sea inundation that laid down the immensely thick layers of sandstone millions of years ago (called the Landsborough sandstone, which has been eroded down about 400m in depth over the eons); and geologically more recent siltation and sedimentation around our waterways. Then settlement and development came and we moved soil, cut and filled areas, made ‘improvements’ to the soil, and generally buggered things up. So, without getting too technical, there are some simple tests you can do to give you an idea of your soil properties. Sandy, clay or loam? Take a handful of soil from various locations in your garden. Wet each soil sample gradually and work it in your hand until it forms a ball. The moisture content should be just drier than the point at which the soil sticks to your fingers. Add some dry soil if the sample becomes too sticky.

It’s that time of year when the temperatures soar and the gaps between rainfall events can be many weeks. Luckily trees shed their leaves in a fantastic manoeuvre that not only reduces their water consumption but also mulches the soil around their roots. The key to keeping plants green and lush during this time, is not just pouring precious water from the tap over them to keep the moisture up, but to mulch, mulch and mulch the soil with organic matter. Mulch not only improves moisture retention, but keeps the soil cool during the extreme heat spells, encouraging the all-important soil life that will feed and improve the health of your plants. The more mulch the better - the main limitations are availability, cost and time to spread it. However, it’s very much the case that anything is better than nothing. Mulching of whole garden beds or planting areas is great. Come and check out our coir fibre blocks, palm fibre mulch mats, sugar cane mulch and tree guards and other great products to help establish your plants. Plants are nature’s air conditioners and the more you have the cooler you’ll be!

Slowly squeeze the soil out between your thumb and forefinger to form a sausage-like ribbon. If it is a firm shape that bends like plasticine, it is a clay soil. These soils are usually rich in nutrients and hold water well. If you can see and feel sand particles and the soil crumbles, it is sandy soil. Sandy soils have low moisture and nutrient holding capacity. If it holds together but is still slightly crumbly, it is a loam soil. Loams are said to be the best for growing plants. Loam covers all soils between sandy and clay soils. Do organics matter? Organic matter includes compost, manure and organic mulch products. Whatever your soil type, adding more organic matter can help improve the soil structure and increase its ability to store moisture and nutrients. You can test to see the relative organic component of your soil by taking a sample, butting it into a plastic cup and pouring a little hydrogen peroxide onto it. This will react with the organic mater and form carbon dioxide bubbles. The more it bubbles, the higher the organic matter content. Regularly adding more organic matter to your soil is recommended as our high rainfall and temperatures cause it to break down quickly. Over time, organic mulches decompose into the soil, adding further nutrient and water holding capacity. Mind your pH Soil pH is a measure of acidity or alkalinity. Neutral soils have a pH close to 7, which is ideal for most garden plants. As soils become more acidic, the major elements of nitrogen, potassium and phosphorous become less available. Some nitrogen-based fertilisers can increase soil acidity, while continual use of lime or laundry grey water will increase alkalinity. Some plants are adapted to particular soil pH levels. Check the soil’s pH before you apply fertiliser to any plant that is in poor condition. Test kits are widely available from local rural and hardware stores.

If you have been into the Maleny Library this week you may have seen the CWA Maleny branch’s lovely display for the Country Kitchens Program, which aims to support people in regional, rural and remote Queensland to improve their health with healthier eating. Beerwah Carer Support Group
This group meets on the first Friday of each month to provide a space for informal support, connecting with each other, and sharing experiences and information at the Beerwah Library meeting room, 25 Peachester Road, Beerwah. A special remembrance ceremony
For several years in Maleny a remembrance ceremony has been held on January 26, organised by Dr Ray Barraclough. With a growing movement across Australia to acknowledge the realities of the frontier conflicts in our history, the ceremony seeks to face some of the human dimensions of those conflicts. During this year’s ceremony a minute's silence will be observed to remember the Indigenous people of this continent and its islands who lost their lives in the dispossession of their land that began on the 26 January, 1788.
From the churches What stood out for you this Christmas season? What I noticed was that regardless of people’s beliefs there is still a spirit of goodwill and connectedness, especially in this sacred season. People I met were more friendly and cheerful. “Peace on earth,” the angels said at the birth of Jesus. I picked up a sense of that in brief moments. Can you imagine if that were true 365 days of the year? Peace, goodwill, harmony, caring … What else stood out for you? Bizarre consumerism, overindulgence, insane behaviours? Amidst all the peace and joy of Christmas, the pain of people stands in stark contrast. Are we helpless observers of the negatives that are so destructive? “There’s something powerful that happens when we can connect our faith with the pain of our world. That means figuring out how we can be a part of the restoration of our world. As we look at our neighbourhood, what does it mean for us to pray the Lord’s Prayer, that God’s Kingdom come on earth as it is in heaven? We pray and act

It was quite a hot start on Thursday, but I guess it's to be expected at this time of the year (and not as hot as the southern capitals). We played a stableford, to break us in gently, with 59 players, which was pretty good considering the weather. Division one winner with a great score of 42 points was Lea Doyle followed by Hope Hannah on 36 points. Division two winner was Carolyn Chestnut with 36 on a count back, runner up was Jenny Hosking on 36. NTP: shots 2 - Val Turner, 5 - Cathy Stone, 16 - Andrea Campbell and 18 (second shot) Karen Gannon. BRD went to 31 points. It is pleasing to hear the positive feedback from our members and visitors about how great the gardens and green looks. Thanks goes to the never-ending work by our wonderful volunteers. The club had a great turnout for Wednesday night social bowls last week. It was good to see some new faces as well as many returning bowlers. Teams from Maleny Bowls have started travelling away this week for inter club competitions, with the Maleny team winning the Woodford triples. Jim King and Miles Allen showed travel adds to good form. Well done guys. It was great to see Doug McGufficke back on the green with some fine rewards for his efforts on Wednesday night. There were a number of golden point games, close games and lots of fun. Well done all. Tony Yorkston, our regular Mr Barbeque, had the whole family along for support. Friday scroungers was well supported again. This competition and our Wednesday night bowls are proving to be great outings for our members and visitors alike. The Range Maleny Croquet Club Contributed by Donna Manning The first of the regular Range Care group visits for the year was held on Tuesday, January 15, with 15 people attending with their carers. Many had a few games of golf croquet after their morning tea, while some stayed indoors and played board games. Thank you to the members who facilitated the morning. Another perfect Sunday afternoon on January 13 on the lawns saw Nick Cram take on club president Vince Carbery. The lead seesawed between them, with Nick eventually prevailing 18 hoops to 11. The other game was played by Kath Smith against Donna Manning and new member Stuart Craig. Giving extra turns, or ‘taking a

bisque’, the outcome was a draw with 11 hoops scored by each side when time was called. The local ibis are again contributing to lawn aeration with several patches of unplanned holes in the courts. The next club meeting will include planning for our participation at the Australia Day Expo. The club plays on Thursdays and Sundays, 2pm for a 2.30pm start. Anyone who wants coaching can turn up at 8am on Saturdays, or liaise with one of the several coaches to organise another time to practise. Six lessons cost $20, with this amount taken off the joining fee if they become members. 35
