Hi Everyone...

Last week was another busy week, with Brownie and I heading to the Caloundra Events Centre after work on Monday and Wednesday nights to photograph and hopefully capture the excitement of the graduating students from Beerwah and Maleny State High Schools arriving for their formals. There is a calmness at around 5pm when the first students start to arrive and then the level of excitement in the group starts to bubble away until it reaches fever pitch as more and more of the glamorous young things and their support crews start arriving! Having now been doing this job for 14 years – and knowing so many local business owners and community members – I often recognise quite a lot of the parents and it is great to see the pride and, no doubt, sense of achievement on their faces as they stand by and watch the spectacle. I reckon if I could bottle the feeling of excitement and the sense of anticipation at these events I would make my fortune! It is strange that when I ask these virtually unrecognisable students their names for the captions, I am reminded of the many other times that they have appeared in this paper over the years and it is nice knowing that we have been part of following their journey throughout the whole school life. Disgust at flying fox slaughter In what can only be described as an appalling act, a large number of protected flying foxes were illegally shot at Conondale recently. Attending the gruesome scene, well known local Maleny wildlife carer Sammy Ringer was shocked and saddened by what she found after a neighbour reported gunshots in part of a forest where the grey-headed flying foxes had established what is known as a ‘maternity camp’ for pregnant females and new mothers. With the early body count reaching around 60, this was a serious impact on the colony, especially seeing that many of the adults had young dependent on them for their survival. An unknown number of these juveniles are also likely to have subsequently died of starvation. “It broke my heart”, said Sammy, who is a member of Bat Conservation and Rescue Queensland, when she realised the extent of the bloodshed. “We did our best to find as many 'orphans' as we could but, as we moved into the colony, the bats flew up and around, thus we couldn't be sure which pups were orphans and which were not. “We were only able to save two – both are now in care. All of the (remaining) orphans left will have died by now. “Because we were not able to get through the dense scrub to search the entire camp area, the figure of 50-60 bats shot may be low. A neighbour texted me to say the wind had changed and the stench of bodies was unbearable.”

Orphan flying fox 'Elli' is now out of intensive care Grey-headed flying foxes are a protected species under the Nature Conservation Act 1992. The Department of Environment and Heritage Protection is working with RSPCA Queensland to investigate the incident. A Department of Environment and Heritage Protection spokesperson said that flying foxes are vital to the health of our forests, as they pollinate several native hardwood species. “It is an offence under the Nature Conservation Act to take any type of flying fox without authority and the maximum penalty for taking 10 or more grey-headed flying foxes is $126,150 or one year imprisonment,” the spokesperson said. If members of the public witness or suspect a wildlife offence, the Department asks that they notify them by calling 1300 130 372 or by completing a wildlife complaint form, which can be found at www.ehp.qld.gov.au/contactus/. Alternatively, locals can call Wildlife Rescue Sunshine Coast on 0448 148 013 or 0411 635 136. For more information about the possible health risks posed by bats and flying foxes in Queensland, members of the public should contact Queensland Health on 13 HEALTH.

LNP Member for Glass House Andrew Powell recently announced that an LNP Government would invest $600,000 for two very important projects at Glass House Mountains State School. The projects include replacing the existing toilet block and erecting a much needed storage shed to house stage equipment and other large items. Mr Powell said he has been contacted many times by staff and parents concerned about the asbestos hazard in their aged toilet block and is pleased that these projects will ensure that our children are being educated in the safest possible environment. “I have been unsuccessful in convincing the Labor minister that these projects are a priority, however an LNP Government will be committed to providing the very best facilities for our children in the safest environments possible, which all lead to a better education,” he said.

Locals remember

Glasshouse Country RSL hosted a moving Remembrance Day Service at the Visitor Information Centre Cenotaph on November 11. Sub-branch President Peter Hyde said: "We had a great crowd of 120 plus who turned out for the service, which was supported by Army Cadets from 128 ACU Yandina who mounted the Catafalque Party.

"A number of wreaths were laid including one by local Ex-Servicewomen Wendy Siebrecht and Colleen Hare (pictured) in memory of Ex-Servicewomen," Peter said.

McArdle commits $500,000 for local sports clubs

State Member for Caloundra Mark McArdle has announced that an elected LNP Government will support Caloundra’s Hinterland sporting community by delivering one-off grants of $300,000 to Mooloolah Soccer Club and $200,000 to Beerwah’s Bulldogs Rugby League Club. Mr McArdle said that sport is immensely important to the Sunshine Coast and these upgrades to local fields and clubs will have a profound positive impact on the community. “Our sporting teams unite us, get us out of the house and contribute to an overall healthier lifestyle across many generations,” Mr McArdle said. Mooloolah Soccer Club President Gus Gillespie said that the funding would help create a safer and more family friendly environment. “This grant would be fantastic for our club as it would enable us to build facilities which we desperately need,” Mr Gillespie said. “Currently we have no toilet block at the clubhouse, no showers, no change rooms as well as no lighting at the clubhouse for the women who play softball here in the evenings.” Beerwah’s Bulldog Rugby League President Lee Robertson said that a grant would be vital in helping them meet the needs of their growing club as well as the growing community. “It has been our long term plan to improve the facilities, including adding a second level to the clubhouse to accommodate future growth,” Mr Robertson said. $4 million to fix dangerous Beerwah intersection

The Palaszczuk Government is committing $4 million to fix the notorious intersection at Old Gympie Road and Peachester Road, Beerwah. Labor candidate for Glass House Brent Hampstead has acted on the concerns of local residents and parents, successfully lobbying Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey for the vital funds to install traffic lights, as well as other works. “This is the most dangerous intersection Minister for Main Roads, Mark in the Glass House electorate,” Mr Bailey with Labor candidates Hampstead said. Brent Hampstead and Jason “The Beerwah Primary School is right Hunt on the corner, and backed up traffic has become a safety nightmare for parents at pick-up and drop-off times. “It’s a dangerous mix for mums and dads and their kids, as well as other local commuters having to brave the intersection at peak times. “Traffic queues back up in all four directions at times, including trucks and caravans. “Labor just gets on with the job, which is why we’ve stumped up the funds and will fix this intersection in the next term of government.” Labor candidate for Caloundra Jason Hunt has also been fighting for the project, stressing the need for flood mitigation. “The road floods in heavy rain, cutting traffic in both directions and endangering lives. It’s part of the tourist route from Kilcoy to Beerwah, so it’s a vital link for the local economy,” he said. As well as drainage works, Labor will install traffic lights and slip lanes as part of the upgrade.

Labor funds solar energy for Sunshine Coast schools A re-elected Palaszczuk Government will invest in 57 schools on the Sunshine Coast, as part of a $97 million initiative to install solar on more than 800 of the state’s 1,239 schools. The roll-out of the landmark solar energy program over the next three years will save $10.2 million a year on energy costs across the state and reduce the carbon footprint of our schools. Education Minister Kate Jones said that Labor will invest $40 million on the supply and installation of solar systems and a further $57 million towards other energy efficiency measures. “The Clean Energy Future for Queensland Schools initiative will also support up to 300 jobs through its rollout,” Ms Jones said. The announcement would save local schools thousands of dollars every year, according to Labor candidate for Caloundra Jason Hunt, who is proud of the commitment to invest in 57

Well known local family the Grigors have recently become the new owners of the Glass House Mountains IGA. Many readers will know Ashley and Casandra Grigor, along with their three daughters Felicity, Kirsten, and Samantha, as the current owners of the Landsborough IGA. Ashley’s great-great grandparents were William and Mary Grigor, the original owners of Bankfoot House – the oldest surviving building in the Glass House Mountains. When Ashley and his family say they are proud locals this certainly rings true as his family moved to Glass House Mountains 149 years ago!

Students’ art portrays ‘The Future of Peace’ Jaelee Fox, a Year 5 student at the Ananda Marga River School Maleny, has taken the first step to becoming an internationally recognised artist by winning the local Lions International Peace Poster Competition, sponsored by the Lions Club of Maleny Blackall Range. The theme for the 2017 contest was ‘The Future of Peace’ – bringing peace to the world through one child at a time. Two students, Taliyah (Tilly) Wright (who was not able to be present at the judging) and Lillian Brunkhorst, were given an Honourable Mention Certificate while the winning entrant Jaelee was presented with a $50 voucher for Rosetta Books. When approached about the possibility of students entering the contest, Principal Ann Donoghoe and art teacher Alieta Belle enthusiastically took up the challenge, with 13 students submitting their art work for judging. Three prominent local artists, Kaye Leach, Gary Myers and John Morrison, had the difficult task of choosing the winning entry from so many creative pieces of art. Botanic Gardens, has been declared the winner of Federal Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace’s 2017 Christmas card competition. Mr Wallace said that there were 50 separate entries received from Alexandra Headland, Dicky Beach and Mooloolaba, the Glass House Mountains, Maleny and Kawana, featuring mountains and beaches along with stunning pictures of wildlife such as birds and frogs. Joining Mrs Vonhoff at the location where her photograph was taken, Mr Wallace said: “My warm congratulations to Jacky on winning our Photos of Fisher competition.” The winning image will be featured as the front cover of Mr Wallace’s Christmas card, which is widely distributed in Fisher, and will be printed on canvas and hung in Parliament House in Canberra.

Fixed four year term... or is it? By Greg Brown In 2015, Queensland Parliament determined that we would have fixed term four year parliaments... but just not straight away. It’s all because when they changed the legislation that sets the terms, they said that it would start after the 55th Parliament (the one we’ve just had). The four year term provisions would then commence with the 56th Parliament (the one we’re about to choose)... except that, as part of the process, this election was deemed as an “extraordinary general election.” This sets the term at three calendar years and also that if the election was held at any time

in 2017 (which it is), then the set polling day would be Saturday October 31, 2020 (mark that in your diary). If the election was held next year (before the May 5, 2018 cutoff), then the set polling date would have been Saturday October 30, 2021. The upshot of this is that you need to choose carefully and make your vote count... as you won’t have another chance to make a change to your local State Member or the government for three years (less a couple of weeks). Unless the State Governor dissolves Parliament for some extraordinary reason... like it can’t function properly. But what are the chances of that happening?

Fun for all ages and abilities with lawn bowls Do you want to play a sport that caters for all ages, abilities and fitness levels? Do you want to have loads of fun in a social setting, meet others and be part of an inclusive team environment? Then you may want to have a go at lawn bowls. Suitable for those aged 10 to 110, this is a sport that is enjoyed by millions of people around the world. A high level of fitness is not required and people with limited physical ability can also participate in this sport which can improve coordination and fitness and be whole lot of fun. Club Glass House, located at 10 Coonowrin Road, Glass House Mountains will be hosting a free ‘Come and Try Day’ this Sunday, November 26, from 10am to 12.30pm and everyone is welcome. With a free sausage sizzle, the day will be great fun for the whole family. The club will also be open, serving cold drinks and lunch and holding raffles at 1pm for those interested. Operating continuously for over 60 years, the Glasshouse Country Bowls Club was founded in 1954 and moved to its current location in 1959. Currently the bowls club has 30 lady and 71 male playing members including three juniors, with a

hope to get more juniors involved in the future. Plans are also underway to get the local schools more involved. In 2000, the bowls club became a section of a community club called Club Glass House Inc which manages the maintenance of the premises and facilities for all members to enjoy. The social side of the Bowls Club is always very popular and involves two lots of eight-week bowling tournaments held on Wednesday nights during February and March, and again in October to November. These nights allow working people and business groups the opportunity to socialize and enjoy competing in a fun weekly environment. On the competitive side, the bowls club enters individuals and teams in representative competitions at district level. These include District Pennant Competitions and District Championships. Winners in these competitions advance to a higher level and teams are also entered into the Premier 7s and Hinterland Local league which run for about 10 weeks at the beginning of each year. The Club Championships are played throughout the year, plus social games each Wednesday morning and Thursday afternoons and sometimes on the weekends.

By Sonia Clark In the lead up to Christmas it is always lovely to hear stories about locals exemplifying the spirit of Christmas by giving to others. Maleny resident Jenny Allen recently decided to have her considerable tresses cut off and donated to the Variety Children’s Charity. Wanting to gift her hair to a charity she was confident would be reliable, she was happy to donate her hair certain it would assist a child who had lost their own hair undergoing Jenny gets her hair cut chemotherapy. “One of my greatest talents is growing hair. A gift I can fortunately share, with much patience. Jenny has been growing her hair for the last six years and, when it became long enough to reach the 35cm required to help make a wig for a child, she enlisted her local hairdresser to cut it back. Before getting her hair cut, Jenny found that she was able to put her hair to good use. On a recent trek in the Himalayas in Bhutan she was able to wrap her hair around her to provide additional warmth! “I was also able to camouflage myself amongst the hirsute yaks. However, I get it easier than the yaks – when their owners want to harvest their hair for clothes or to make a tent, they are known to sneak up on them while they sleep at night, roll a chunk of it on a long rod and then yank!” Luckily Jenny’s hairdresser at Dot and Birdie in Maleny was a tad more gentle. “I am happy my hair can continue its journey and hopefully help support someone under great stress,” Jenny said. Election promises at a glance Liberal National Party (LNP) For more details on each, see www.betterqueensland.org.au Swimming lessons for young Queenslanders A Tim Nicholls-led LNP Government will introduce a dedicated $18 million program to provide free swimming lessons for up to 120,000 bubs and toddlers. LNP Leader Tim Nicholls said the Get Swimming Bubs and Toddlers program would provide $150 vouchers to parents who enrolled their kids aged 1 to 4, giving them between 8 and 10 swimming lessons with an accredited club. Three million trees commitment The LNP announced that they will facilitate the planting of three million trees across Queensland, in conjunction with local groups and Landcare organisations which can bid to undertake planting in their local area. Sunshine Coast Hospital Link Road As part of a major announcement, the LNP Government will invest $215 million to deliver the $430 million Sunshine Coast Hospital Link Road, with the LNP hitting up the Federal Government for the remaining $215 million. LNP Shadow Transport Minister and Member for Glass House Andrew Powell said the LNP would improve access for staff and visitors to the hospital. “The Hospital Link Road will ease traffic pressure on local roads such as Kawana Way, Nicklin Way and the Sunshine Motorway and will run between the Sunshine Motorway and Kawana Way.” Environment Benefit Bonds As part of their ‘Greener Queensland’ plan, the LNP will use Environment Benefit Bonds to tackle

Queensland’s Future’ plan. They also recommitted to at least 50% renewable energy in Queensland by 2030.

The announcement brings the number of new police personnel to be recruited over the next four years to 535, with 513 to go on the frontline and 22 world-class terrorism, security and intelligence specialists and a dedicated assistant commissioner supporting them.

Millions for Glass House Mountains NP The Glass House Mountains National Park will become one of four new must-see ecotourism destinations across Queensland, with a $3.03 million upgrade announced by Labor candidate for Glass House Brent Hampstead. Mr Hampstead said that the upgrade plans for the popular daytrip spot for South-east Queenslanders, would not only protect the national park, but also boost the local economy and local create jobs.

Renewable energy commitment Labor announced that they will continue the expansion of renewable energy with a $151.6 million commitment to support new large scale renewable generation ($50 million) and solar in schools ($97 million) under their ‘Powering

Labor has committed to employing at least 3,700 new teachers over the next four years as well as reintroducing the Ready Reading program to primary schools. Labor’s ‘World Class Education’ policy would – amongst other initiatives – deliver the rollout of the Digital Technologies Curriculum – including coding and robotics – to all schools; and inspire more students to study STEM through virtual STEM academies and STEM Girl Power camp.

Labor to upgrade TAFEs and invest in training Labor will invest more than $90 million to redevelop and refurbish TAFE campuses and provide more training opportunities for young workers across Queensland. Announcing the TAFE and training policy, Premer Annastacia Palaszczuk said Labor would provide $85 million over three years to fund campus redevelopment and refurbishment work.

The Landsborough Rail Overpass will go back to the drawing board, but this time our community will have real consultation before any proposal will be finalised. For those commuting to Caloundra, for work or personal reasons, traffic congestion will be reduced with

the help of $15m upgrade to the Caloundra Road/ Nicklin Way roundabout. In support of the community sector, Andrew Powell MP and I announced that an LNP Government would secure a 75 year lease for the Mooloolah Valley Community Centre so they can expand their services and continue to assist local residents. Additionally, I am committed to providing one-off grants of $50k for Beerwah QCWA, $45k for CCSA Hall in Caloundra, $35k for Sunshine Coast First Aid Volunteers to purchase a support vehicle and $25K for Night Eyes Water and Landcare Inc to continue their important work keeping our Pumicestone Passage clean. Caloundra City Private School, Unity College and the new Baringa State School will each have

installed 40km/h flashing lights on the road outside the school at a cost of $35k per school. They will provide notice of the proximity of a school and help to protect school children. Our lifestyle in Caloundra is deeply entwined with our beaches and waterways. We need to ensure these are safe. Met Caloundra, Dicky Beach and Ithaca Caloundra Surf Lifesaving Clubs will each receive $20k to purchase Inflatable Rescue Boats for this purpose The Sunshine Coast is developing into a destination for sporting events, though it is the role that sport plays in our own community that underpins the decision to direct a number of one-off grants to our local clubs to support major upgrades to their facilities. In the Hinterland, Mooloolah Soccer Club will receive $300k and Beerwah Rugby League Club will receive $200k. Additionally, $630k will go to Caloundra Aussie Rules Football Club, $200k to Caloundra Rugby Union Club and $100k to Caloundra Cricket Club.

I’m a local having lived in the electorate for the past 44 years and I love the place. I went to school here. After serving five years in the Australian Army and then gaining my teaching qualifications, I took up a position as a Custodial Officer at Woodford Correctional Centre, my current job. All the Sunny Coast electorates have been, and are, incredibly safe LNP electorates. It has been thus for decades. Recent analysis of both State and Federal Government spend per capita has our electorates very close to the bottom of the list. This is a result of our safe seat status, and the unwinnable label we receive from the ALP. If we want the floodgates to open, to receive our fair share of funding, we need to take the safe seat status away. We need the LNP not to take us for granted, we need to make the ALP believe that this electorate, our electorate, is “in play”. The Caloundra and Sunny Coast communities are suffering a lack of transport infrastructure. We have been promised the duplication of the heavy

rail and light rail connectivity to the beaches for 35 years. It's like waiting for Godot. Unless we can shake things up here it will never come. Again, good research indicates that an efficient, cheap, public transport system is an essential enabler. It leads people out of poverty traps, allows people the ability to connect, to find work, to create jobs, to interact, to socialise and recreate. Why wouldn't a government want to do that? Why would any vaguely competent government ignore this obviously good idea, to give a billion dollars to a Cayman Islands based coal company? I am a realist, I passionately believe in evidenced based policy. So another area of policy angst

for me is energy, in particular the lies and misdirection played out on our media by major parties every day. The fact is that solar/wind wholesale energy prices have dropped like the proverbial stone. The latest results in energy auctions all over the planet, have bid/contract prices at $30/MWh. Yes, this is less than 25% of the cheapest black coal electricity generation price, 25%! Add one of the various storage techniques and it goes out on the network at 50% of our best prices here. Yes, your bill, chopped in half. The truth is, I am not going to win this seat, a good result for the Greens here is 10 to 12%. So our first preferences will expire. I implore you, no matter who you normally vote for, to shake things up, put the Greens first and shock your party into policies that favour people, not huge, “tax advantaged” multinationals.

With election day 2017 now upon us, the choice for the voters of Glass House is clear: Annastacia Palaszczuk and Labor delivering another three years of good, stable government, or a Tim Nicholls and Pauline Hanson coalition of cuts and chaos. At a local level, there is a genuine choice to make between a Labor representative who will give voice to the Hinterland in a majority Labor government, or another three years of an LNP politician who consistently under-delivers. It’s time the towns and communities west of the Bruce got a fair go. Labor understands that first rate public health care is a top priority for Hinterland residents. That’s why in the next term of government Labor will employ an additional 260 nurses and 12

midwives on the Sunshine Coast. Labor has also made several local road improvements in this term of government, including the Steve Irwin Way intersections at Reed Street and Bowen Road. This week I announced that a re-elected Palaszczuk government would fund a $4m fix of the notorious Beerwah intersection on the corner of Peachester Road and Old Gympie Road. Traffic lights, improved drainage and other works will be undertaken to fix this dangerous traffic hot spot once and for all. Emergency services are also critically important to life in the Hinterland. In this past term of government Labor built the new $2 million Maleny police station and in the next term will

build a $3 million state of the art facility to house the Maleny and Districts Rural Fire Brigade and the Maleny Auxiliary Fire and Rescue Service. Most importantly, Labor has a plan to create local jobs, with our proven Buy Local, Back to Work and Skilling Queenslanders for Work programs. In the past three years Labor has driven down unemployment on the Sunshine Coast to 4.9% – compared to 7.3% when the LNP left office. Tourism is a major driver of jobs here in the Hinterland, and with that in mind I announced this week that Labor will invest $3 million to upgrade facilities in the Glass House Mountains National Park. That’s great news for our beautiful National Park and even better news for local business who will benefit from the increased tourist trade. Our region deserves an MP who not only understands the issues but will actually get out there and fight for them. For example in 2016 AGL paid their CEO $6.9 million per year while 21,000 people had their power cut off because they couldn't afford to pay their bills. The Greens want power returned to the people, grassroots democracy is one of our four pillars. Greens Brisbane Councillor Jonathon Sri was instrumental in introducing a trial system for the residents in the Gabba Ward whereby the people vote on what projects they want to go ahead and where their money will be spent. Most people are tired of hearing empty election cycle promises – especially those of us in regional electorates, where services are continually cut, and infrastructure rarely enters politicians' thoughts outside of campaigns. There is more to Queensland than Brisbane and the Gold Coast. Our services and infrastructure needs are just as important as theirs. Our children’s access to educational opportunity, our families' employment opportunities and our small businesses' ability to survive and compete, are just as important, as is our ability to get from one point to another – be it by car, train or bus. Public transport and roads are in desperate need of upgrade. The only way our electorates are going to get the attention they deserve, the funding they deserve,

the services and infrastructure they deserve, is to remove the safety of the seats. We need new representation, new ideas and new priorities. People with passion and commitment. Safe seats don’t get the government’s attention. Our youth need employment and apprenticeship opportunities, our communities need access to increased rehabilitation and mental health services, liveable wage job opportunities to enable increased spending in our local economies, and our disadvantaged need access to fundamental support services and affordable housing options, and all children need access to an affordable extra-curricular activity. Our child protection services need overhaul, as does our inadequate violent and sexual offender sentencing culture, and our local environmental, tourism, arts and cultural groups and projects need further investment of resources. My goals for Glass House include completing the four-laning of Steve Irwin Way, upgrading

sections of the Maleny-Kenilworth Road, increasing access to mental health and rehabilitation services, a multi-purpose community hub for Beerwah and surrounds, park amenities for Maleny and Upper Caboolture, a commitment to increased apprenticeship opportunities, affordable housing, a ‘safe haven’ development for DV survivors, and a Police Station for Mooloolah. These are a combination of both long and shorterterm goals. As a community, we rise by lifting others. We only truly move forward when we commit to best practice and to leaving no-one behind. And when we ensure all people are treated equally under the law. Why should you vote for me? You should vote for me because I’ll commit to fighting to address the issues our communities face, rather than indulging in blame-shifting, which has become far too frequent in Australia’s political environment. We must focus on what we can do, rather than what hasn’t been done.

If you are trying to decide who should get your vote and you believe in a cleaner greener renewable energy future then you should not even consider One Nation or LNP. They both want more dirty polluting coal and are happy to loan Adani a billion taxpayer dollars to do it. Adani should not get a cent of help to start this mine. It will wreck more jobs than it will create in the long run and add even more carbon to the atmosphere. Labor has announced it will veto the loan if reelected and keep a 50% Renewable Energy Target to 2030 and 100% by 2050. One Nation and LNP would cut that target all together. I went to a meeting in Kawana a few weeks ago held by the Queensland Government on their Climate Transition and Adaptation Strategies. Please check out their website for details. It is an indepth and bespoke plan that they have already started to implement. So the only parties that seem serious about tackling climate change and our environmental issues seem to be Labor and The Greens. If the environment that provides you with every sip of water, every breath you take, every mouthful of food you eat is important to you, then please think twice about who you vote for. I know people vote for One Nation thinking they are going to achieve a new and different kind of government this time. The facts tell a different story. In 1998 when One Nation won 11 seats, Labor formed government, and in 2001 with a high One Nation vote, Labor was re-elected. Vegetation nightmare

When the State Government first introduced vegetation restrictions, a lot of farmers took the opportunity to lock in a PMAV (Property Map Assessable Vegetation), leaving a portion of their land timbered and locking in a Category X (coloured white on veg maps) area that could be cleared to plant improved pasture for livestock, plant more orchard, grow sugar cane, crops, etc. Landholders could make a plan to improve their business into the future as time and funding allowed. A contract with the government, or so they thought. In 2016 amendments by the LNP to the Protected Plant legislation were introduced and ‘Trigger Maps’ were created. Blue circles now cover about 2.6 million hectares of Queensland. The PMAVs which were to provide certainty for landholders regarding vegetation matters were trumped. The ‘blue dot’ mapping can change at any time. It is the landholder's responsibility to be aware of any changes. With over 17,000 pages of state legislation impacting primary producers, this is unrealistic. The farmers that have had the misfortune to have lost their Category X are now required to obtain a permit by employing a botanist (at the farmer's cost) to search the property to see if there is a possibility of an endangered plant. And the sting in the tail – the permits only last for two years before they have to reapply and pay all over again. No one could organise clearing and planting around the wet and dry seasons in just a 24 month period. Labor has announced if they win this election they will reintroduce the Vegetation Management Bill, another vegetation hurdle for landholders to jump through. For most farmers, farming means taking on a huge debt and when they are impeded in being able to increase production and property value the chances of making things viable are impossible. The rural community desperately needs less regulation and more support, not more regulation and little support. Linda Quayle Peachester

You Said It Cont. Defacing signs

Further to the debate about defacing of signs I would like it on the record that I do not support the vandalism of candidates’ signs that has occurred on the Range. I would, however, also like to point out that there are two sides to this story. Many of your readers may recall I wrote to this paper a few months ago about the proliferation of out-of-campaign-period billboards of Andrew Powell. It seems to me those National Party campaigners complaining about the recent defacement of his signs are guilty of a level of hypocrisy: if our Local Member, the representative of authority in our region, is prepared to condone the spread of billboards bearing pictures of himself in direct contradiction of our local area plan, this, in itself, is evidence of a breakdown in the rule of law. It could, without much of a stretch, be seen as a kind of vandalism, one that has, in turn, provoked a response from the less sophisticated elements of our community. What you sow, so shall you reap. From my perspective, and I suspect from many thousands of others, if a vote for Brent Hampstead means not seeing any more billboards of Andrew Powell, then, on that issue alone, it is a vote well placed. Re: Halloween litterbugs

I agree with Jillian from Landsborough. We have the same problem where we live in Tamarind Street in Maleny, which seems to have become the Halloween hot spot for Maleny. The carton of rubbish I collected from our street the next day yielded lots of single use plastic lolly wrappers, lots of uneaten lollies and particularly offensive were the empty spray cans of crazy string. The container and contents are recommended to be disposed of as ‘hazardous waste’ yet it had been sprayed into gardens along the street! All of this rubbish is not biodegradable and likely to wash into our waterways and pollute our environment. It was great to see so many kids outside, away from screens and interacting with the community, but the rubbish generated by this event needs to be addressed. Perhaps one solution would be to have a themed Halloween disco in a local hall, with homemade stuff to share, wizards, witches, ghouls and ghosts… go for it. Libby Malter Maleny

Re: You said it questions

In last week’s GC&M News, Mr Brian Stallworthy asked why each survey form in the recent Marriage Survey was individually numbered. He asked me to look into it and respond. I can tell Mr Stallworthy that the survey forms were individually numbered to make sure that each survey form was unique and could not be copied. If the forms were not individually distinguishable they could have been copied to allow someone to vote more than once. Numbering the forms also allowed the Australian Bureau of Statistics to break down the data by geographical region so that we could know how each specific federal electorate had voted as well as what proportion of people in total completed the survey. The survey was conducted by the Australian Bureau of Statistics under the strictest confidentiality procedures. You can read more about these processes, and the numbering of survey forms at https:// marriagesurvey.abs.gov.au/privacy-policy#barcodes. The most important things to note are first, that no person who saw or had any access to any completed form also had access to the information they would need to identify the respondent, and second that all survey forms and individual information collected will be destroyed within the next 60 days. Lost credibility

I have seen countless episodes of the British TV program 'Grand Designs' and in most of these programs the local council planners try to do their best to ensure when there is a building proposal submitted to council these are vetted thoroughly, particularly to ensure that the privacy of the affected parties is protected. There are also extensive consultations involved. This principle does not appear to be the case with the planning approval section of the Sunshine Coast Council. Anonymous and nameless bureaucrats take decisions without consultation or notifying the affected

parties that their privacy would be severely affected. In my case the planning section approved the building of a shed/studio right above my dwelling. Yes, the owners abided by the council rules but gave no consideration of how the location of their shed/ studio affected my privacy. There was no attempt on their part to explain to me their plans and what they plan to do to protect my privacy. On consultation with my neighbours, I was told that I had no recourse against the council's decision and I just had to grin and bear it. My only recourse was to protect my privacy by growing fast growing plants. It’s no wonder that Australians are losing trust and confidence in the three tiers of government. In my view the Sunshine Coast Council has lost whatever shred of credibility it had. Roy Clogstoun Maleny

Contentious High Court decision

All of our Federal MPs and Senators were required by our Constitution to make an oath or affirmation on the opening of Parliament on 30 August 2016 that, “I do swear that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, her heirs and successors according to law. So help me God!”, with the last sentence omitted for an affirmation. Part of Section 44 (i) of our Constitution states that “Any person who is under acknowledgement of allegiance to a foreign power... shall be incapable of being chosen or of sitting as a Senator or a Member of the House of Representatives”. The Queen is the Head of State of the United Kingdom which our High Court has declared to be a “foreign power” so our MPs and Senators should all be barred, but surely that’s not right! Three of our High Court judges in the Sue v Hill case in 1999 found that the court did not have jurisdiction to hear the case. The other four judges ruled that the United Kingdom is a “foreign power” and realised that they had a problem with the oath or affirmation as the Constitution can only be changed by a referendum. They decided that because of several laws passed since 1906 and by the “notion of divisibility of the Crown” the Queen referred to in our Constitution had changed over the years to become the “Queen of Australia” who is a separate legal personality to the “Queen of the United Kingdom” even though she is the same person, so most of our politicians were indeed lawfully elected. The old saying that “The law is an ass” appears to be very apt in this case. Sel Hopley Maleny

We have decided to have the Junior Christmas Break-up on November 26 starting at 4pm. Please help with the catering and bring along a plate of food for the children. The club will supply the barbeque needs. Our AGM is being held on the same day, November 26, starting at 2.30pm. Please come along and support the committee in making decisions for the betterment of the club. Work on the the upgrade of courts 2 and 3 was scheduled to start this week (Tuesday November 21) and continue until the end of January. Congratulations to two of our Monday night competition teams making the finals. Good luck to Division 1 team, the Mungrals, and Division 3 team, the Mystics, who were all set to contest the finals, beginning on Monday of this week. On behalf of the committee I wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Thankyou Club Glass House – it’s a great venue. Before the day even began we received some very generous donations giving us a great start of over $1,000! I even received two beautiful opal jewellery items from Winton! It’s amazing how generous people are! This year we had 100 raffle prizes and lots of great auction items thanks to the generosity of lots of individuals and businesses both in our local communities and outside our area. A huge thank you to all that donated and bought up big! I couldn’t do it without my amazing helpers, Lorraine McNamara, Amanda Johnston and Michele Tipper! Thanks, ladies! Blackall Range Woodcrafters Guild The Blackall Range Woodcrafters Guild recently officially handed over to the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre four beautifully handcrafted silky oak tables and about twenty hand-made jigsaw puzzles. The tables were made by Woodies member Rob Otto who was ably assisted by fellow member Don Lear. The timber for the tables was locally-grown silky oak and was milled at the Woodies’ shed at Montville. The jigsaw puzzles were made by guild member Philippa Friend on a scroll saw and were beautifully painted. The last two shows ‘Tenori’ and ‘Opera Queensland sings for Maleny’ were also hugely popular, as some of Queensland’s best singers performed well-loved music from opera and the light classical genre. The latter concert included Maleny’s own Singers who, as usual, under director Margaret Taylor’s baton, charmed the audience in a program designed by OQ especially for Maleny. The Arts Council is interested in feedback and they want to know what you enjoyed this year, and what you would like to see in the future. So come along, they say, enjoy the fun, the food and find out the program for 2018.

School News Peachester Hall goings on

Generations join together

Grandparents Day at Beerburrum State School was a huge success with lots of smiling faces and enjoyment of the activities. Grandparents began with a lovely afternoon tea prepared in the school’s Stephanie Alexander Kitchen before sharing a tour of the gardens and some activities with their grandchildren. The afternoon was capped off with instrumental performances from two of the school’s music students. A number of the school’s Year 5 students did a great job in supporting Mrs Davidson in the preparation of the morning tea.

Every year at annual award night we recognise one of these students who has effectively developed workplace skills, knowledge and confidence in their chosen industry. The 2017 recipient of Trainee/Apprentice of the year is Year 12 student Nikitia Temomo-Kreet. Nikitia has been employed by SPC Netball Club at Caboolture completing a Certificate III Sport & Recreation, and she is described by her employer as an amazing young woman and an absolute godsend to the club. The club president cannot speak highly enough of Nikitia and wanted to state that the club is extremely proud and grateful for her hard work and contribution over the past 18 months. They know that there will be a very bright future in whatever path she chooses. Congratulations to Nikitia and to all our trainees and apprentices on a successful and rewarding 2017.

Peachester State School kids had a ‘Spooktacular’ night of fun and games recently. Their annual Dress-Up Disco was held at the Peachester Hall and fun was had by all. The noise and action was a far cry from the peaceful yoga class that was held in the hall the same morning. We love our local hall and the fact that it provides a venue for our community for so many diverse activities, sometimes all on the same day! We are looking forward to the Peachester Hall Community Christmas Party and a visit from Santa on Saturday December 9, at 6.30pm. Thanks to all the school parents who assisted in transforming the hall and baking for our disco night for our kids. These events do not happen without your help. Christmas charity donations and vacation care update As part of their ongoing commitment to supporting community initiatives, Glass House Early Education Centre has thrown its support behind the ‘It’s in the bag’ Christmas charity campaign. The Centre will act as a local collection point for the campaign which seeks to support women in crisis with practical items of personal hygiene and everyday care products to help bring them a little joy at Christmas time. Organised by the people behind the ‘Share the Dignity’ charity, the idea for this campaign came out of the realisation that women in crisis will often put the needs of others before themselves. Organisers wanted to do something that would give these women a little personal happiness at Christmas. The campaign will run from November 18 until December 2 and the idea is to choose a handbag in good condition that is no longer being used, fill it with items that would make a woman feel special and pop in a note or Christmas card. This campaign gives members of the local community the opportunity to show women in crisis that someone cares - in this case girls or women experiencing homelessness or poverty. Many of these women have fled domestic violence, and this Christmas campaign is a simple yet thoughtful way to make a difference. Earlier this year Centre Co-ordinator Ange and the team instigated a collection point at their Centre for the ‘Share the Dignity’ personal hygiene product drive to help support homeless women. With over 85,000 homeless women in need this Christmas ‘It’s in the Bag’ is a practical way to show someone you care. Items to put in the bag can include sanitary pads

and tampons, personal hygiene products and everyday luxuries such as shampoo, soap and personal care items. Some people choose to pop in a few small items of personal giftware to make the recipient feel special – a small book or maybe even a nice nail polish – items these women wouldn’t normally be able to afford. Next time you’re at the shops, collect a few items for your Christmas handbag and ask yourself ... “what would a homeless woman need?” Especially relevant items are those little things needed every day from toothbrushes to hairbrushes. The filled handbags can be dropped off at the Centre anytime during the week and at the end of the campaign drive Ange will arrange for the donations to be sent to those in need this Christmas. This campaign is a great way to give to those in need this Christmas. With school holidays fast approaching, now is great time to think about childcare options during the break. Ange and the team have been busy putting together a jam packed activity schedule for their vacation care program to make sure school aged kids have a heap of fun and engaging activities to keep them happily occupied over the six week break. To help with affordability, this year the Centre will be incorporating all additional incursion and excursion costs into the daily rates. By absorbing the costs into the daily vacation care fees, families will be able to access their CCB / rebate subsidies which will be especially appealing for families with multiple children in vacation care. Glasshouse Early Education Centre will be offering a full program of fun activities, local adventures and exciting incursions / excursions.

Centre coordinator Ange Hardey When creating their holiday schedule they work collaboratively with the children to find out what type of activities they would most enjoy, and this feedback is used as the basis for many of the program ideas. Living - Arts Plenty of colour in this exhibition Artists Vanessa Perske and Kaye leach will be showcasing their new artworks at Maleny Art Direct on Friday December 8. This exhibition will showcase these two artists’ love and passion for nature, Australian’s flora, in two different mediums.

Vanessa Perske is a well-established, self-taught artist with many of her works and commissions in private and corporate collections throughout Australia and internationally. After a brief period as a primary teacher, she realized that her passion is with paint and canvas. She has followed that passion ever since. Vanessa’s focus and ideas are around nature and its complexity. This is reflected in her work through detailed patterns and layering with a distinctive use of intense colour.

It’s November and our ‘Open Studio Trail’ is on again for the last Open Studio Trail for the year. So don’t forget – now is the time to get those unique sought-after Christmas presents. Artists will have their studios open this Saturday and Sunday, November 25 and 26. Some of our artists include Judi Parkinson, Chris Blake, Jennifer Eurell, June McCotter, Jacky Lowry, Cathy Lawley and Glenys Fentiman. They produce work in a variety of mediums including watercolours, acrylics, oils, ceramics, photography and printmaking. Our Feature Artist for November is professional potter Cathy Lawley, who re-discovered her love of ceramics while raising her four children. Cathy has always found clay to be therapeutic;

This exhibition will be showcasing a brand-new range of paintings using palette oils, in contrast to her usual style in mixed media. While she is still able to achieve the beautiful bright colours that we expect to see from her art, the freedom the palette knife brings to the creative process can really be seen. “Having a painting of flowers on the wall is a truly beautiful way to brighten your day – whilst it’s not always possible to a keep vase of fresh flowers, a painting can put a smile on your face,” Vanessa said. Kaye Leach’s love of the arts began years ago in Darwin. Since moving to Maleny she rediscovered her love of clay and is drawn to figurative sculpture. The creation of Kaye’s ceramic pieces for this exhibition was inspired by the heart-stopping beauty of a simple field of brightly coloured spring flowers, a celebration of flowers. Her work combines some traditional forms using colour and floral elements, applied through incised techniques. She is influenced by nature, and its graceful playfulness between patterns and textures. Both artists will be present on the Friday evening at the Christmas Street Party at 5.30pm and would love to have the opportunity to meet you.

Norman's next home exhibition

Norman Dobson has been a potter for 54 years during which time he established potteries in three states. He graduated from the National Art School, East Sydney with a Diploma of Art Education in 1965. In 1997 he and his wife established the Eureka Pottery and Craft Gallery in Montville, which incorporated Norman’s pottery studio. Their mission was “Promoting Excellence in Australian Craft”. In 2001 they retired from the gallery and since then Norman has been making pots in his workshop at their Maleny home. He exhibits now at their “occasional gallery”, on the home verandah. Norman makes a wide range of wheel-thrown tableware. Pots are high-fired stoneware or porcelain, ovenproof and microwave safe. He prepares his clay, makes his own glazes and builds and fires his own kilns. A feature of his pottery is that it is constantly evolving. He enjoys developing new glazes and experimenting with different decorating techniques. His pots reflect nature and appeal to the eye and the hand. Hallelujah! Handel’s ‘Messiah’ is coming

A condensed version of Handel’s ‘Messiah’ is coming to the Hinterland! This is a fabulous opportunity for locals to get a taste of what an oratorio is all about and it will be performed for free at three locations, Montville, Witta and Mooloolah this Sunday, November 26, by the Sunshine Coast Choral Society. Contributed by Tanya Cullen Legal Studies at Glasshouse Christian College is very much a practical theory subject that provides students with the opportunity to learn concepts that have real life relevance. The current unit on Housing Law is an excellent example. The primary focus is on evaluating the laws that surround renting and buying a dwelling and it is an ideal opportunity for students to engage with experts in the field that will prepare them for their future experiences. Earlier in the term the students had the pleasure of hosting real estate agent Dan Clarke from First National Real Estate Beerwah. Dan provided valuable information for the students as future renters and buyers and talked through the contract phase, including pest and building inspections, and outlined the rights and responsibilities of buyers and sellers and all the relevant interested parties. The most recent experience for the students was a visit to the new Millbrook housing development in Beerwah. Meeting with the developer, Doug Forbes, and real estate agent Donna Girdler from First National Beerwah, the students were led through the development journey from start to finish. Doug and Donna pointed out the many legal requirements and regulations surrounding developments, purchasing off the plan, understanding easements, as well as covering topics such as town plans, urban growth and

From the churches Those who worship at Our Lady of the Rosary Church in Caloundra recently welcomed our Archbishop, Mark Coleridge. He visited to bless recent renovations and in particular to dedicate the Altar. In our Catholic tradition we place significant importance on the Last Supper celebration of Jesus and his instruction at that meal “to do this in memory of me”. Every time we gather to remember that meal where bread is broken and wine is poured out we also remember what happened to Jesus in the days after, including the body of Jesus broken in love for all humanity and the new life of Jesus rising from the tomb Sunday morning. These saving events happened once for us all but we believe that when we remember, as Jesus asked us to, then we share in that broken Body and that new life in a real and powerful way. The Altar around which we gather is therefore a very special table. It is both the table where we

Together with musicians from the Kilcoy Adventist Church they provided the residents with an afternoon of musical entertainment together with stories, poems and quizzes. Sport Amateur ace could win a $16,000 car Amateurs playing in the inaugural Live Life Communities Maleny Grove PGA Legends Pro-Am at Maleny Golf Club, on Saturday, December 16, will have an opportunity to win a Kia Picanto valued at $16,000 by scoring a hole-in-one on the signature third hole. The automotive prize for acing the 200m Par 3 has been put up by one of the tournament sponsors, Pacific Motor Group and eclipses the $12,000 cash purse being contested by the professionals who will not be eligible to win the car by holing out. Maleny Golf Club President Max Whitten said Pacific Motor Group’s generous initiative provided a fantastic incentive for more members and visitors to get involved and join a field of more than 100 professionals and amateurs. “Thanks to Pacific Motor Group we have been able to add some real sizzle for the amateurs playing in the event,” Dr Whitten said. Pacific Motor Group Principal Craig McPherson welcomed the opportunity to be involved. “It’s great to be part of this inaugural

tournament and we thought it would be a terrific idea to add some additional excitement to the event by putting up an attractive incentive for amateurs in the field,” he said. The professionals will play in both morning and afternoon fields and accompany about 50 amateurs, with shotgun starts scheduled for 7.30am and 12.30pm. The event will showcase Maleny Golf Club’s challenging new links-style, nine-hole layout designed by renowned golf course architect Graham Papworth, with an additional three of the second nine holes in Stage Two expected to be in play early in 2018. There is no admission cost for spectators and the course offers some excellent elevated vantage points from which to sit and follow the progress of the players from hole to hole. Contributed by Michelle Lenz Rugby league legend Allan Langer visited Mooloolah State School recently as part of the official opening of the school’s new goal posts. Despite the rainy day there were plenty of happy kids, parents and staff who were keen to meet Alfie at the school. Alfie was himself keen to get to know the community and not surprisingly he was kept busy signing autographs, being in photographs with students and their family members, and taking time to say hello to everyone on the day. The goal posts were officially opened by Alfie and the Year 6 teacher, Mr Lowe, and there was a game of touch football that everyone could play, along with kicking games on the oval.

Winners, with a fine 79 points, were Brian Morrissey/Eric Anderson. Larry Jordan/Graham Rimmer finished second on 77, a point ahead of Ron Turner/Tom Major. This is Graham's second placing in a week – no doubt he's getting ready for the Club's last ‘major’ of the year, the two day Beerwah Cup to be played this weekend. NTPs: 2 - Gary Hanlon, 5 - Graeme Weller, 16 Cheryl Peut, 18 - Geoff Griggs. By Saturday the perfect weather had disappeared and we had a day of annoying drizzle. This nearly halved the field to 98 sodden souls who actually finished a medley single Stableford event. Results were close with countbacks needed in each grade. A grade winner was Robert Pettigrew on 41 points. Club captain Andrew Wills showed some authority with a 40 point round, finishing second on a countback with Corey Wallyn. Geoff Clarke had his best round in two years, 39, to win B grade. Paul Handley beat Dean Wye on countback to finish second, one point in arrears. Vince Price made a long overdue return to the winners' circle, taking out C grade on 37. He beat Brad Eagle on countback. NTPs: 2 - Graham Rimmer, 5 - Des Wicks, 16 - Robert Pettigrew, 18 - Paul Handley. This weekend we play our final ‘major’ of the year, the two day Beerwah Cup. Contributed by Britt Holley Tibro’s Netball Club at Glasshouse is running its very own four week Fast 5 Netball competition during December and January. Games take 29 minutes and there is no limit to player substitutions – great for all levels of fitness. Teams of 5 to 10 players are welcome to register, or you can join a team as a single player. Fees are $50 per team per game and, if you are a registered Tibro’s player, there is no registration fee. New players need to pay a $20 registration. Players must be 14 years or older. Mixed teams are welcome but limited to 2 to 3 males on the court at any time. The competition starts on December 12 with a break over the Christmas period. The Range Croquet Club Contributed by Ken Barker Sunday saw an entertaining match up with Ken Barker and Donna Manning in a fourteen-point game with no lifts. This is involves only going through each of the six hoops once instead of twice and then ‘pegging’. It’s a much shorter form of the game, and, when lifts aren’t involved, considerably fewer considerations in the middle game. After shaky starts by both players, Donna found some form with a six break and then took advantage of a tactical error to peg out, winning 14-3. On Thursday Donna again starred in a fourteenpointer with Nick Cram and Helen Andrews. This time, however, it was in a six-ball game with three players all as individuals. There is room for an immense amount of treachery in a game such as this, even more than in a normal game. However, I am reliably informed that everybody played honourably and the result bore this out. Donna pegged out, scoring 14, Nick and Helen both a creditable 7. The lawns are being renovated on November 22 and will be unavailable for a couple of weeks after that. Club play days are Thursday and Sunday at 2pm for 2.30pm.
