Hi Everyone... While many bush fire affected townships are quite far from our local communities it hasn’t stopped generous locals from across Glasshouse Country and the Blackall Range from showing their support. For a number of local Rural Fire Brigade officers from Landsborough, Glass House Mountains and Beerwah, Montville and Eudlo this has meant heading to NSW as part of a large contingent from Queensland’s Emergency Services who went south to help their interstate firefighter colleagues. In this week’s edition we have featured just three of the many local initiatives encouraging others to get behind their work – Krystal Kirk from Landsborough has been focusing on young people and has created the Smile Bag project; Jane Warwick from Mooloolah is busy knitting to help wildlife; and the Maleny Blackall Range Lions have been rattling their donation tins (see stories pages 3–5). With Australia Day also hot on our heels there are plenty of local events that have fundraising activities planned to support those affected by bush fire. A special remembrance ceremony will take place this Saturday, January 25 at 10am in the RSL Maleny Memorial Hall at 1 Bunya Street, Maleny. During the ceremony a minute's silence will be observed to remember the Indigenous people of this continent and its islands who lost their lives in the dispossession of their land that began on the January 26, 1788. Cover Story Local initiative hoping to spark a little joy By Sonia Clark With the devastation of the recent bush fires foremost in our minds, it has been incredibly heartening to see so many local communities banding together to offer support and assistance. Last week in GC&M News we reported on some great local initiatives to contribute to the support effort for those affected. Local resident and mum Krystal Kirk has been determined to do her bit to support families in need, particularly children affected by the bush fire crisis. This prompted her to create a local initiative called Smile Bags, which she hopes will help spark a little joy during these challenging times. The simple but effective idea has been to create little bags of new, small non-perishable items suitable for children aged up to 15 years to be distributed to those in need. Krystal said the local response had been incredible. “I've literally had thousands of Facebook post engagements, messages, questions and people just popping by to say 'hey, I love this idea'. It’s really so wonderful and I've been so excited to watch this initiative grow,” Krystal said. The GC&M News office and other local dropoff locations such as Landsborough Post Office

and Maleny Dairies will accept unwrapped items that will be collated, transported and distributed to children in need of a real smile in the coming weeks. Krystal has provided a list of suggested items such as small story books, colouring books, small plush toys, non-toxic crayons, pencils and Textas, puzzle books, novelty socks, personal care items for older children, watercolour paint sets and scrunchies and hair clips. Krystal said that she, like so many others, had been deeply affected by seeing the impact of the bush fires on families and their livelihoods and on the native flora and fauna across the country. She said that as a mother she couldn’t help but think of the children in this situation. “At a time when children should be celebrating the summer holidays and simply being kids, they are confronted with what in most cases is unimaginable loss, so I’d like to return the smiles to the faces of these children, even if only for a short while.” If you would like to find out more or want further ideas of what you can donate, head to the Smile Bags Facebook page for more information.

Local News Wool donations wanted for wildlife Mooloolah Valley Community Association (MVCA) has responded to the call for woolly pouches for native animals impacted by fire with a donation of $200 worth of wool to local resident and super-knitter Jane Warwick. As Australia’s bushland burns and its furry residents are left homeless, the demand for knitted pouches for young orphans has grown. To assist Jane in providing more of these pouches, the MVCA welcomes any further donations of 8 ply pure wool and suitable flannelette sheets to keep Jane’s knitting needles clacking through the coming winter when the wildlife will be particularly vulnerable. Every September Jane, who is also a volunteer in the Mooloolah Community Centre Op Shop, has donated 300 woolly pouches to Eumundi Animal Rescue. MVCA secretary Anita Verwayan said the community association had decided to donate $200 for Jane to buy six kilos of charity wool from Bendigo Woollen Mills, as well as donating any 8 ply wool and suitable flannelette sheets that comes into the shop for her to make the pouches. Jane said the wool was good quality, which was important as synthetic could suffocate the animals. “I can knit one large pouch in two evenings. The linings are made from flannelette and I try to provide three to four linings per pouch,” Jane said.
Jane Warwick gets ready to knit The big bag of wool has been delivered and its colourful contents are already being transformed into neat, tightly knit squares, made according to the guidelines of WIRES (NSW Wildlife Information, Rescue and Education Service) for the many animals orphaned after mothers fail to recover from burns. Donations can be taken to the op shop, which is open Monday-Saturday, 9am-1pm.

Local firies help out down south
Lions supporting bushfire crisis The current bush fire crisis has affected us all and the Maleny Blackall Range Lions Club has had collection tins in retail stores and cafes throughout Maleny. Club treasurer John te Kloot sincerely thanked all who had donated so far, with an initial collection of $1,500 in late December plus another $8,000 from club funds sent to the Australian Lions Foundation (ALF) and Lions Clubs International

Foundation (LCIF) for distribution direct to people in affected areas through their local Lions clubs. The Maleny Rural Fire Service unit has advised the club that they do not need any equipment or funds as our Rural Fire Service units are fully funded by the Queensland Government. Money donated in Maleny and collected by Lions will be directed to what is currently deemed more urgent need. LCIF is distributing and installing 27,000 litre tanks complete with pad, pump, piping and fresh water to the elderly and families with children in bush fire ravaged areas in all states through the Lions clubs. So far, Maleny Blackall Range Lions Club has sponsored one of these tanks, to the value of $3,000. John said that every cent raised in our community would go to people to assist with their immediate needs and that further funds would be forwarded in months to come as the clean up and restoration of the devastation continues. “Collection tins will remain in stores and cafes until the crisis passes and further money will be sent to ALF or LCIF to assist worthy recipients. “Thank you to all who have made a donation in Maleny,� John said. On Saturday, January 12 officers from Glass House Mountains, Landsborough, Maleny, Montville and Eudlo Rural Fire Brigades headed south to fight the Charleys Forest fire east of Canberra. They returned home on Thursday, January 17. On the following Saturday another group of officers from Beerwah and Maleny headed down to assist our southern neighbours.

Long-term Maleny resident Greg Williams has announced he will be a candidate for Division 5 in the Sunshine Coast Council elections. Greg believes we need a more resilient and connected community that is well prepared for future challenges and his pledge is to achieve this. “While I have a long record of battling for and delivering new, improved hinterland community infrastructure and services, every voter should know that I am standing as a strong independent with a strategic ten-point plan to manage, protect and enhance the division,” Greg said. “Following recent bush fires, many voiced their concerns to me for their family’s safety and homes and property as, despite limited rain, many slopes still remain extremely dry. “Following the election, there will only be weeks until decisive action is required to reduce fire loads. “As your councillor, I vow to ensure further steps are taken to avoid loss of life, property and environment. “I have lived in the hinterland since relocating to Wootha with my young family in 1988 and now have four children and four grandchildren. “I established a legal practice locally and am currently a director of local charity Smart Living Society Limited. “It’s been a privilege to be a member of many fantastic boards and committees and I have made life-long friendships cemented at meetings, hard work at projects and good-hearted fun at community events.” A list of activities and infrastructure

Community News Special remembrance ceremony
Contributed by Dr Ray Barraclough More and more Australians want to become better informed about the dimensions of history in this ancient land. And history of human occupation dates back 60,000 years or more, with Indigenous people being the first peoples, and custodians, of this land. There is also a growing movement across Australia to acknowledge the realities of the frontier conflicts in our history. For several years in Maleny there has been a remembrance ceremony that seeks to face, in a particular way, the human cost of those conflicts for Indigenous people. Anyone is welcome to attend the one-hour remembrance ceremony to be held on Saturday, January 25, from 10am in the RSL Maleny Memorial Hall at 1 Bunya Street, Maleny. During the ceremony a minute's silence will be observed to remember the Indigenous people of this continent and its islands who lost their lives in the dispossession of their land that began on January 26, 1788. On an historical note, even early in the European occupation of this land, acknowledgment was made of this process. Some 183 years ago, the following statement was issued in 1837 in the Report of the Select Committee of the House of Commons on Aborigines (British Settlements): "Their land has been taken from them without the assertion of any other title than that of superior force ... they have an incontrovertible right to their own soil, a plain and sacred right which seems not to have been understood."

Maleny local businesses out did themselves again in 2019 donating prizes for the Christmas raffle that is drawn as part of the Maleny Christmas Festival and Street Party held on the last day of the school year. Maleny Commerce president Nicole Hilton said there were eight great prize packs including the luxury pack for the first prize donated by Spicers Tamarind for a one-night stay in the luxury villa as well as a three-course dinner for two. There was also a basket of locally produced products valued at $200 donated by Maleny IGA and a $150 gift voucher from Maleny Optical for sunglasses, as well as plenty of other vouchers from generous local business owners. Proceeds of the Maleny Christmas raffle are given to one of many worthwhile local causes and in 2019 funds went to the Maleny Hospital Auxiliary. “It’s probably due to the combination of support for our local hospital as well as the fantastic prizes donated that allowed us to reach an amazing total of $2,601 from raffle ticket sales,” Nicole said. Ms Frecklington said the project would have enormous benefits for the region and it was exciting to commit a significant contribution to make the facilities a reality. Member for Glass House Andrew Powell said the one-off grant would cover the costs of infrastructure, power, water and the roads needed to access the site. “The funding will also ensure other stages can be built sooner rather than later,” Mr Powell said. Maleny Hydrotherapy Inc president Tim Bagshaw said the organisation was thrilled with the LNP’s announcement. “These funds will provide a significant contribution towards establishing the Maleny hydrotherapy centre. “Hydrotherapy provides effective exercise for both rehabilitation and fitness and our vision is to progress the health of the local community through hydrotherapy,” Tim said.

Established Maleny harp duo Graham Langdon and Rowena Thomas recently hosted a twoday harp immersion workshop teaching tunes, technique and tricks of the trade, with wonderful fun and laughter along the way. Harp players attended from Peachester, Woodford, Narangba as well as a number of Maleny locals. At the end of the second day, a concert brought together all harp players performing the various ensemble pieces they had learned as well as solos and duets from all participants. Finally, there was a special appearance by guest vocalist Rachel Fentiman who sang, amongst other songs, a moving rendition of the lullaby ‘Suo-Gan’ in Welsh, accompanied by an eightmember harp ensemble. It was a rare and memorable performance.
It is easy to do and once you take the plunge you will find us a friendly, cheerful group. On our monthly meeting day our aim is to keep the business part to a minimum, so that we can enjoy a coffee and the speaker for the day. We have had some excellent speakers. At our last meeting our guest speaker took us on a journey down the Murray River with the original paddle-wheel steamers to the craft of today. An important feature of our club is sharing lunch. Everyone brings a plate of finger food and coffee is on tap giving us more time to socialise with old friends and new members. We also have club outings, as well as a range of interest groups. You Said It My take on bushfire hysteria
Any Australian who bothers to leave the asphalt and concrete urban environments with their pretty parks, or who relies on rainwater, knows that the climate has changed greatly in the past four decades. Writing more policies and documents and having a royal commission will not make things better for anyone. In the meantime, regarding the fire storms, Australians should be expecting state governments who administer national parks to do so effectively, irrespective of what a few ignorant greenies have to say, as it appears that the fuel loads in these aid and abet these disasters. If this needs to be done, all of us should be prepared to forgo bids for a far-off Olympic Games and other non-urgent government expenditure, so that funds can be allocated to fire control as practised by Aborigines for thousands of years and associated protection of communities who live near national parks. We need money for equipment and personnel on the ground, not frills and documents of fantasy. If we want to be serious about managing climate change, we will expect/demand all levels of government to put up with the kicking and screaming, as the Murray-Darling River system is restored. This will also mean sacrifices by all Australians. Australia can turn the lights out and pull down the power poles, kiss good bye to coal mining royalties, but that is going to change little while nations such as China, India, the USA, Indonesia and the nations of South America strive for a standard of living that equates with what we have in Australia. Our standard of living and values need to change, and change fast, to live with climate change. All of us are responsible for doing our bit. That includes expecting politicians who can work in the national interest. If you don't want to do your bit then shut up. Lee Meyers Landsborough
Re: Climate change
I completely endorse the comments by Bruce James and Pam Maegdefrau in the letters page in GC&M News (January 15) on the Morrison government's inaction and incompetence on combating the impact of climate change. Morrison had to be dragged screaming and kicking to acknowledge that the science on climate change is proving to be correct. Ten years ago that eminent economist Ross Garnaut accurately forecast that fires seasons will be more severe by 2020. Remember, Morrison is the man who held up a lump of coal in the Australian Parliament telling the ALP that they should not be scared of coal. I can't believe that he did not meet the ex-fire chiefs mid last year to heed their warnings about the severity of this year's fire season. Yes, fire management is a state responsibility but the Commonwealth has overall responsibility across state borders and the coordination of combating such disasters. He then snuck off to Hawaii leaving the country rudderless and without leadership. The PM's call for a royal commission on the recent fire disaster is yet another attempt to buy time so that he can shore up the loss of his political capital. There are recommendations on around 90 bush fire disasters sitting on shelves in Canberra. His party is deeply divided on climate change, with the Member for Dawson, George Christensen, blaming arsonists for the fires and the Deputy Prime Minister ignorantly believing that climate 12

change is the domain of inner city green trendies. The Prime Minister can't go on parroting the mantra that we are abiding by the Paris targets while his Energy Minister is at the same time trying to claw back outstanding credits from the Kyoto protocol. No doubt the PM has seen his approval rates dropping since his mishandling of the fire crisis and if this inaction continues the Morrison government could be a footnote in our political history. Murdoch vs climate truth
This is a call to readers who access ‘The Australian’, ‘Courier-Mail’ and Fox News TV channels, owned by ex-Australian, Rupert Murdoch. My generation (I am 77) was raised to have high trust in what we read in the Courier Mail and The Australian. No more. Not only with political reporting but recently with some excruciatingly incorrect reporting and biased comments on our horrific and ongoing bushfire disaster. We had headlines about the fires being caused by arson, despite official police reporting that maybe 1% were due to criminal ignition. Other reporting blamed inadequate hazard reduction burning, despite the fire-fighting authorities saying that this had little effect on the occurrence and intensity of the fires. We then had Murdoch’s media promoting the crazy notion that “these fires would have occurred anyway, they were just the same as past occurrences, and nothing to do with climate change”! Several high-profile journalists have now resigned from the company’s newsrooms in disgust and now Murdoch’s own son, James, has lashed both News Corp and Fox News for promoting climate “denialism”. What can readers do? Apart from complaining, stop buying or subscribing to their papers! Find sources of independent reporting that pride themselves on being balanced and accurate. I once suggested to an ex-Courier employee, a friend of mine, that the Courier should be forced to put the truth, in brackets, after every printed lie. He told me that this would not work, as it would make their papers twice as heavy! Above all, keep in mind that the Morrison government is beholden to three insidious forces – a wealthy coal lobby donor, the climate deniers on the backbench and their PR agency (the Murdoch press). Political point scoring
I feel very sad that the bush fires are not even fully under control and the climate change brigade is out and about scoring a few political points. It’s interesting to note that some of these same contributors actually proudly exhibit that most disgraceful symbol of the "Extinction Rebellion" (XR) organisation on their literature and banners. For those who do not know who Extinction Rebellion is, well it’s that group who stick themselves to roads, trains and public buildings. If you read about the people who set up XR it is not about the environment at all. The environment is only a tool used to achieve their ultimate goal of the destruction of the Western democracies and capitalist systems of government and the implementation of a socialist/communist utopia, and we all know how well they work don't we. Also as a quick clarification on a few issues they raised. To say what has happened is a result of

global warming is not true. In 1939, the black Friday bush fires raged across NSW and Victoria through December and January 1939. In those terrible fires 71 people lost their lives, 3700 buildings were destroyed, 69 mills destroyed and five towns completely wiped of the map that were never re-built. The accompanying royal commission found, as is the same now, bush had become overgrown, houses built to close to the bush, a serious drought, public apathy, lack of controlled burning and cuts to government funding. I have a feeling this will unfortunately be the same when the current royal commission completes its findings. Shane Daly Peachester
Re: Green waste disposal
Thank you to Sandra Poole for your wellconsidered and passionate argument in last week’s letters page calling on council to waive green waste fees because of the drought and during the total fire ban. I totally agree. With our volunteers and so many in the community coming together to do so much, it’s our duty to do what we can. I have received several messages over the last month making similar suggestions, and on that basis I made requests to the council team that we should do it. I am frustrated that it appears our current policies don’t make it possible, so to change that I recently started the process to put a motion to the full council at the next meeting. I believe we need to find a way to make it happen and that’s what I will be asking for. This council as a whole is generally very committed to a user pays or “full cost recovery” approach on waste. For example, in your letter you suggested a voucher system for waste fees. I have argued that we should do that in many of our budget negotiations since I was elected, but there has never been enough support for it. However, in this case I believe the other councillors and the mayor will recognise that we should put the “user pays” principle aside for the sake of the greater principle of taking action in a time of unprecedented national crisis. Hopefully by the time of the meeting the rains have set in across the country and this crisis has reduced for the time being. Hinterland Kids get active Dance Academy stars

The Dance Academy Maleny recently shared exciting news about the placement success of two students - Sian Ellis from Conondale and Enya Hensel from Maleny. Both were invited to attend The Queensland Ballet's acclaimed summer school program earlier this month. The summer school offers talented young dancers aged 11 to 18 years the opportunity to be mentored by Queensland Ballet's artistic director Li Cunxin AO and academy director Christian Tátchev to further their training in a culture of collaboration and excellence. Dawn Burman, principal of The Dance Academy, said the girls, who also form part of the academy’s performance team, had been dancing since they were three years old, and she was thrilled to learn that Sian had been offered a place at The Royal Ballet School's spring intensive in Hong Kong later this year. “The girls have danced with The Dance Academy in Maleny for the past two years since we took over and have made huge improvements in their technique and artistry. They both do multiple classes and styles each week and recently successfully completed their first Royal Academy of Dance ballet exams with great results,” Dawn said. The summer school program was held in Brisbane from January 13-18 and included classes in classical ballet technique, pointe work, repertoire,

Students were also able to participate in informative discussions with Queensland Ballet dancers, as well as gain additional knowledge from physiotherapy and nutrition professionals. The week-long program concluded with a presentation showcase for family and friends. Dawn said she was extremely proud of both girls and was pleased to see that their dedication and hard work was definitely paying off. No doubt we will hear more about these rising dance superstars as they continue to excel in their craft.

Eligible children can receive one voucher per calendar year valued up to $150. With just under a week left for school holidays many local families are getting ready to either send their kids back to school for another year or have a little one start prep. Whatever your situation, the start of the school year can be an anxious and draining time for the whole family. To help families manage the transition as smoothly as possible, Anglicare’s mental health and family wellbeing team have put together their top tips for starting school. Anglicare Service coordinator Alecia Williamson said parents and guardians had a crucial role to play in helping children adjust to the school environment. “It’s really important that parents don’t think they can just rely on teachers to help their little ones adjust and feel comfortable,” she said. “Children – especially those of prep age – are like sponges. They pick up on the moods and demeanour of the adults around them, so it’s really crucial to be self-aware, calm and consistent, especially in the next few weeks. “Even small changes in what we say or do at home can have a huge impact on how children perceive the school environment and even their relationships with classmates and teachers.” Ms Williamson said parents and guardians should make a conscious effort to speak positively and with enthusiasm about going to school. “Be positive and share your own stories but also don’t skirt around the issue of being anxious. Talk about times when you were worried and what you did to overcome it – you really are your kids most important teacher,” she said.

So much to explore in centre’s new playground Glasshouse Early Education Centre is thrilled to be nearing the completion of the re-naturalisation of the centre’s outdoor learning spaces, which will be ready for plenty of excited children at the beginning of February. With a holistic focus on environment an important part of the centre’s philosophy, the new areas, which include the main back play area and the toddler play area, will aim to encourage the children’s connection with the environment to help them fall in love with nature while encouraging risky play. Centre coordinator Dee Shaw said the centre’s community was very excited about the changes and staff were especially excited to plan their learning programs around enhancing the children’s connections to nature and encourage risky play as part of their learning and development. “It’s been an exciting time for both staff and children, seeing the transformation of their outdoor space happen,” Dee said. “There are so many exciting new aspects to our

playground renovations. It is amazing to see how quickly it has come to life. “This is a great space for the children to play and explore with an area underneath to maximise yard space and also create some little nooks for quiet play throughout the day. The team are really excited to plan their learning programs around our fantastic new spaces.” The spaces were designed and constructed by Wearthy, a company with a philosophy to construct play spaces that allow children to play and develop a sense of belonging. In addition to providing an amazing space for children to play, the company provides direct training to centre staff to showcase the benefits of the playground’s features to children. The yard has been strategically designed to incorporate risky play with a focus on sustainability with natural timber structures and yard features. Allowing children the opportunity to test out different environments and determine what they are comfortable with is an important part of a child’s development. “When children
engage in play, they are actually researching how the world around them works, how their body works and that they have power and control over their learning,” Dee said. “Risky play in early childhood can help develop a child’s self-confidence, resilience, executive functioning abilities and risk-management skills, not to mention that when children engage in risky play it can actually reduce the risk of injury as they learn to listen to their body cues.” Special attention has been paid to ensuring the environments are abundant with plants and trees to support each child's innate connection to nature, which has been proven to alleviate stress and anxiety with little people. To further add to the children’s nature experiences, the centre’s bush kindy program will be kicking off shortly, giving the opportunity to experience nature both inside the centre and beyond. Chillorado is the brainchild of Maleny multi-instrumentalist Kit Cotter performing the meanest acid-jazz that you'll hear anywhere. Kit’s great harmonic style is very George Benson-esque. Brian is a man so completely at home in his music, be it conducting his many choirs, solo performing with voice and amazing body percussion, or, in this instance, performing with our own Rob! Rob is the consummate performer writing clever, thoughtful and poignant songs and playing awesome guitar and he sings with mighty range and control. Who doesn't enjoy an inspirational story of the triumph of the underdog? And if the story is true and set in Australia, so much the better! In ‘Ride Like a Girl’ we have the contemporary Australian story of Michelle Payne who, in 2015, became the first woman to win "the race that stops the nation" – the Melbourne Cup. Teresa Palmer plays the indomitable Payne, Sam Neill is her father/trainer and Stevie Payne, Michelle’s brother, (pleasingly) plays himself. Magda Szubanski is Sister Dominque, the Catholic nun who provides emotional and spiritual support to Michelle’s motherless family of ten. As an aspiring female jockey Michelle had to overcome overt prejudice, verbal abuse, misogyny and even violence on the racetrack. As she said at one point: "(Girls) have to work twice as hard to earn respect." How could we fail to celebrate this courageous young champion who reached the pinnacle of horse racing success in a man's world? Our members travel from Maleny, Beerwah, Glass House Mountains, Buderim, Brisbane and beyond. We are an active group of local amateur and professional writers who meet to discuss aspects of writing and publishing. The group meets on the second and fourth Fridays of the month in the Beerwah Library meeting room. Members attending usually donate a gold coin to defray the cost of morning refreshments. New members are welcome and encouraged. The yearly subscription is $5. In 2019 Glasshouse Country Neighbourhood Watch distributed around 300 welcome kits to new residents of the area. If you are a new resident you can collect a free kit in Beerwah from the newsagency and the Library, in Landsborough at the newsagency and the post office, at Beerburrum Post Office and at some real estate offices and neighbourhood centres. Many businesses support Neighbourhood Watch activities and at times include special offers in the kits for new residents. Health &Beauty Disposal of unwanted medicines The incorrect disposal of medicines can have a major impact on the environment - a fact that has been reinforced in a recent study by Monash University. The study, supported by wide ranging research, found that medicines like antidepressants can find their way into our waterways and can change the behaviour of fish when disposed of incorrectly. The findings highlight the need for people to make sure they correctly dispose of expired and unwanted medicines. Old and unwanted medicines deteriorate with time and this results in changes to their chemical makeup. These changes can make the medicines less effective or, in some cases, potentially harmful and toxic if they are used after their expiry date. So we need to get rid of these old medicines but what is the best way to do this? For too long many people get rid of old or unwanted medicines by simply throwing them in the garbage or flushing them down the sink or toilet. It has been estimated that more than 500 tonnes of medicines find their way into waterways and landfill

every year. Both these methods have dangers and studies have shown even medicines disposed of in landfill have leached back into the food chain via water or fertilisers made from land fill or sewage solids. There is even a danger of trace amounts of some of these medicines making their way into drinking water. The reality is that treatment plants for water and sewage are not designed to remove drugs or medicines from the water. With sewage, the residual drugs tend to collect in higher concentrations in the sludge, which is then often used in the production of fertilisers for crops grown for human consumption. The only safe way to dispose of the expired and unwanted medicines is through a pharmacy scheme called Return Unwanted Medicines (RUM). It collects unwanted medicines and disposes of them via special high-temperature sealed incinerators. The RUM project, available through pharmacies nationally, makes it possible to return all household

In the Garden At last some rain!
The recent rains are very welcome and have come at the right time. As you drive around the region, you can see gardens have suffered from the hot, dry summer. Hopefully soon they’ll be launching back into life. I’m sure everyone is being water-wise and following sensible water efficient practices in the home and the garden. Even with the rains, Seqwater reports that Sunshine Coast dam levels are falling fast. We’re not at the point where water restrictions will be imposed, thanks to the South East Queensland water grid connecting us up to the other dams in the region. However, the combined dams total is under 60%, which is a level at which Seqwater encourages people to implement water conservation in and around the home. If you’d like some practical ideas on water conservation, Seqwater have some great tips and ideas – just log onto www.seqwater.com.au/water-wise. The rains also mean that pests and diseases are on the march. Watch out for fungal problems with your roses and leafy vegetables. Grasshoppers and caterpillars are on the rampage, so be vigilant and take action early. If there’s too many to squash by hand (or you’re not so keen on that idea), you can use some fairly soft sprays such as: • Pyrethrum, a product extracted from a type of daisy plant. Although it is a natural insecticide, you still need to be aware of bees and other beneficial insects. As the product breaks down in UV light, it works best if sprayed late in the evening when bees head back to the hive. Pyrethrum will work fairly rapidly, being a contact product. • DiPel is based on bacteria that interrupt the gut function of caterpillars and small grasshoppers. They ingest the product when eating some of the plants it’s sprayed on, so it does take a few days to work.

With much of Australia suffering from drought, wild fires and thick smoke, many people we have been talking to are concerned that their gardens or revegetation could become potential fire hazards down the track. Should they be removing vegetation rather than planting more? Managed gardens and forest can make a positive difference in coping with weather extremes. They provide shade to keep us cool, habitat for the wildlife, water for the creeks and so much more. The more vegetation we lose, the drier and hotter the land becomes. It’s a vicious cycle. So, keep planting, especially in this part of Australia where we are fortunate to have good soils and (usually) good moisture levels to grow rainforest plants. Rainforests are a fire-supressing vegetation type and when we plant enough, they help create the rainfall we need here and further inland. Forest Heart has a great range of rainforest trees, shrubs and vines in tube stock, mega tubes and our new four litre advanced stock. From familiar faces like flame trees, native frangipani, Eumundi quandong, white beech and red cedar, through to some of our lesser known locals such as yellow carabeen, white bean or white bollygum, our local rainforest plants can help our climate one tree at a time.
• Eco-neem is another natural product – from the neem tree – which has to be ingested. It works by suppressing appetite and restricting growth, and so it can take a few days to take effect. • Success is a bio-insecticide derived from beneficial soil bacteria and works as a contact and ingested product, so generally works quicker than DiPel. Don’t worry about the mushrooms and toadstools popping up in the lawn and garden mulch, as they’re not indicative of a serious problem. Most are beneficial to the soil but don’t eat any of them as they’ll most likely be poisonous. Dogs can commonly be poisoned by mushrooms in the lawn as they’ll eat or play with them. It’s a good idea to pick them – wearing gloves, of course – and throw them into the compost or bin. The vegetable garden will need some attention as Red-shouldered leaf beetle the organic content of the soil will most likely be less than it should be as the worms and micro-organisms break it down. So replenish with compost and mulch. If you need bulk amounts, mushroom compost is available by the trailer or truck load from some local landscaping centres. Mushroom compost is a great source of organic matter and promotes a healthy soil ecosystem of fungi and bacteria. However, it doesn’t contain much in the way of nutrients, so make sure you add some pelletised chook manure to feed the plants as well. Now is also a good time to top dress the lawn. The grass will start to return to an active phase and so will power through the thin layer of top dressing, meaning it will grow strongly and thickly. Talk with one of the helpful staff at a local landscaping centre and they’ll help with the amount of top dressing soil you’ll need, how to apply and spread it, and what to do afterwards. Someone sent me a photo of an insect in their garden (lots of them) and asked what it was. It’s called a red-shouldered leaf beetle. They appear in the summer months but this year there seems to be more than usual. No need to panic. Although they do eat leaves of garden plants – especially vegetables and fruit trees – they generally only create a minor nuisance and aren’t worth the effort in trying to control them. Let nature take its course and other insects and birds will eventually eat them down in numbers.

Sport Maleny Golf Club
The Range Croquet Club Sarah Widin and Gillian Bradley had an interesting game with the highlight probably being an extraordinary hoop made by Gillian. Careful inspection of the photo below shows that the red ball is on track, under the watchful eye of Sarah, to make the hoop from an unbelievably difficult angle and distance. Thursday, January 9, must have been the day for notable performances. In another game on the same court Nick Cram in a game of doubles, with Wallace Roy against Donna Manning and Kath Smith, put himself in the running for the biggest break competition early by taking his ball to the peg from hoop one, a break of 13. The final score
in this game was 20-9 to Nick and Wallace. No play was recorded on Sunday because of the welcome rain falling on the lawn. Coaching for beginners and others is available from 8-10 am on Saturdays. These are popular sessions with accredited coaches in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. Play days are Thursdays and Sundays at 2pm for 2.30pm.
