This month’s art features paintings and linoprints by Arts Trail members Cholena Hughes and Neville Field. The focus of these beautiful works is on aspects of the Glass House Mountains. They are more than just pretty pictures. Arts Trail brochures are available at the library.

There is also and plenty of fun and games at Beerwah Hotel with live music from 2.00pm.
The Glasshouse Musos will be meeting at the Glasshouse Coffee and Tea Merchants for their regular blackboard session from 1.00pm – 4.00pm. Word is that it is a great place for real people, real music and real coffee! Located on Steve Irwin Way, next door to the fruit shop and garden centre.
If you like to support the Australian Film Industry then you will want to head off to The Maleny Film Societies Australian Film Festival, at the Maleny Community Centre. To find out more details about the movies they will be showing, check out the full story on page 4.

Since then, Paul has been semi-retired and Anne is a teacher at Elimbah State School (Mrs Hughes). Since November last year, Paul has taken on the role of President at the BeeGees Football Club,
They took their citizenship test in Brisbane – you are allowed 45 minutes to complete the 20 multiple choice questions. They took three and a half minutes to finish and got 100% right. Anne says that the region is the best in the world to live. They went on holiday to Vanuatu recently where they toured waterfalls and beaches – they were nice but they both thought that the beaches along our coast and the waterfalls in our hinterland were much nicer than that.

The Maleny District Sport & Recreation Club Inc have organised a free Aussie Day Sport, Recreation and Service Club Expo as part of the Maleny Australia Day celebrations this Sunday, January 26. The day will kick off early with the Big Aussie Day Apex Breakfast, then watch Maleny’s magnificent 5th Light Horse Troop in all their finery at the Flag Raising Ceremony, featuring the TS Centaur Cadets. Then the fun really begins with the Expo! The Dave Hankinson Oval will be alive with activity, with 50 plus Range sport, service, arts and recreational groups displaying what they do – including hands-on opportunities to ‘have a go’. Affy started playing football at the age of 12 at the Maleny Rangers Footbal Club, not knowing anything about the game, and is now a full time member of the Queensland under 17’s team and trains at the Queensland Academy of Sport. Last year saw her selected in the Matilda’s under 17’s National team, she’s the number 7, a right winger and known as the girl with the million dollar smile. Australia Day 2014 Family fun day Show'n'Shine
True blue fun
The Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club will hold its first annual Show'n'Shine. Entry for public viewing is free and it will kick off from 10.00am on January 26. The show and shine will be part of a Family Fun Day with a jumping castle, stalls, and kid’s games for all ages, as well as food available and bar facilities, plus live music throughout the day. The show will feature 20 categories, with trophies and prizes. Judging will take place between 1.30pm and 2.00pm. Registration will be from 8.30am to 9.30am and entry is $5.00 per car. The Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club is located at 902 Steve Irwin Way, Glass House Mountains.
At Aussie World the day is filled with true blue Aussie style events, entertainment and fun for the entire family! Entertainment and activities at the Ettamogah Pub are free to watch. At 10.00am on January 26, there will be a patriotic Australian flag raising ceremony followed by the singing of the national anthem. Then it's time for the Dunnys to start racing! The race is hotly contested with local teams taking part and the winners declared Dunny Race Champions of the World! There’s also a Tug of War contest at 11.00am which is hilarious. From 9.00am to 12.00noon don't miss out on seeing cars, caravans, utes and bikes from the veteran era through to the classics of the 50s to the 70s. There will be all types of makes and models on display and you’ll have the chance to talk to the proud owners of these beauties. If you want a bird's eye view of the Dunny Races, head upstairs and you'll see all the action from the verandah.

Council is hosting an Australia Day Flag Raising Ceremony at Kings Beach Park, Caloundra, at 8.00am on January 26 for those who would like to take a moment to express their national pride. Division 2 Councillor, Tim Dwyer said the Metropolitan Caloundra Surf Club will bring the Australian Flag in by surf boat and hand it over to cadets from TS Onslow (Navy) and Squadron 223 (Air Force) who will then march the flag into Lions Park for the flag raising. Other activities at Kings Beach Park include a meet and greet with Australia Day Ambassador Craig Lowndes OAM from 9.00am, a Queensland Air Museum display including the nose of a Sea Vixen and the Hot 91 Summer Caravan will be on hand providing fun games and giveaways and music until 12.00noon. “I encourage anyone who is a fan of motor racing to take advantage of the opportunity to meet one of the nation’s most popular sporting heroes three-time V8 Supercar champion and five-time Bathurst 1000 winner - Craig Lowndes OAM," said Cr Dwyer.

Feeding hungry koalas to get easier Feeding the family can be a tricky business. Some are fussy eaters, some have special dietary requirements, some need more food, some need less food. And making sure the pantry is stocked with all you need, can seem like a never ending job. The story is the same, even if that family is of the koala variety. Local koala carers struggle to find the variety of leaves that are needed to supply the different needs of different aged koalas that they often have in their care at the same time. It means that many carers spend precious time and money regularly driving for up to 160 kilometres to source fresh leaves from the specific species of eucalypts that the koalas eat. Local community group the Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network (GMAN) decided that something needed to be done to help, and last year they were successful in being awarded a grant through the Queensland Government’s ‘Everyone’s Environment’ program. The grants, administered by the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection, for which our local MP Andrew Powell is the Minister, are aimed at grassroots action to tackle environmental issues. Cliff Schnick, who composed the project proposal for GMAN, said that their project – the Koala Food Tree Project – was approved for the funding late last year. “The project in total is valued at $7,000 and involves planting 500 gum trees of over 10 different species on a secure private property in the Glass House area. “The variety and number of trees will mean that local government-approved koala carers will not have to travel far and wide to collect the fresh leaves they need to look after their sick and injured koalas”.

Vanda Grabowski with one of her koalas in care GMAN have sourced the right seed and are growing the seedlings at their GMAN nursery. And now all they need are some willing locals to help them prepare the planting sites and then plant the trees. To learn more about caring for koalas, and to find out about the project and how to get involved, the group have organised a community information session on Saturday, February 1 starting at 10.00am at the Glasshouse Mountains Neighbourhood Centre (the hall opposite the post office). “The morning is open to anyone interested in koalas. A local koala carer will speak about what they do and we’ll be talking about our koala food tree project, as well as explaining how people can be involved,” said Cliff. The event is free of charge, and if you’d like to find out more about the project, you can contact the project manager Peter Kluver on 5438 7409. The first site preparation / tree planning working bee is scheduled for February 15.
Funding success for local groups
Member for Caloundra Mark McArdle has congratulated seven school, sporting and community groups in the Caloundra electorate for being awarded a total of more than $144,000 in government funding. Three of the seven approved grants were for groups in Glasshouse Country for the purchase of equipment. The groups were Landsborough Kindergarten receiving $15,510.42 to install seating and purchase equipment, Glasshouse Country Horse and Pony Club $15,595.00 and Landsborough Scout Group that will receive $31,818.18. The fund provides one-off grants to not-forprofit Queensland community organisations, with revenues sourced from gaming taxes placed on Golden Casket lotteries, wagering, keno and gaming machines. Mr McArdle said he was pleased to see such dedicated organisations be successful in their applications. www.gcnews.com.au

Late in 2013 GCNews brought you the story about little Finn Smith, grandson of Leona Coureas who is the Manager of the Shell Service Station at Beerwah. Finn was struck down with meningococcal in late November and has undergone significant surgery to ensure he could beat the devastating disease. Generous Sunshine Coast locals have been fundraising for the Smith family to be able to ease the load in coping with Finn’s future recovery. The Co-op wanted to be able to support the family and decided to do a promotional offer where four cents from each litre of fuel purchased between December 15 and December 22 would go to the fundraising efforts. This was also combined with a raffle, which was drawn last week. In total the funds raised have come in at a total of $8,224.00, a combination of $5,136.00 from the fuel promotion and $3,198.00 from the raffle, of which Ester Frizzo sold $,1050.00 worth of tickets just by herself.

Local lime caviar makes its mark

If it was up to Tracy Mackle, the old English nursery rhyme would be updated to ‘Finger limes and lemons say the bells of St Clements’. For Tracy and her husband Gerard (and their three children), the native Australian fruit – finger limes – have become an integral part of their daily lives. The Glass House Mountains couple have established the areas first commercial finger lime farm, called Coonowrin Fingerlimes on Back Creek Road.

Gerard, Tracy’s Irish born beau, took an interest in all things bush tucker and when Tracy bought him a finger lime tree as a gift about five years ago, the seed of an idea was planted in her subconscious. Finger limes are an Australian citrus, native to the Border Ranges areas of SE Queensland and northern New South Wales. They grow to be a tall shrub or small tree, and they are perfectly suited to being grown in our Glasshouse Country conditions. Around four years ago, Tracy and Gerard decided to commercially plant finger limes and see if they could establish a local bush tucker industry. They planted 170 trees of three different varieties – a pink, a red and a green variety.
It took until last January for them to commercially harvest their first crop – and excited is too small a word to describe what Tracy felt. “It was so wonderful to be picking these beautiful little fruits from our small trees and local people buying them from local fruit shops,” said Tracy. With the crop being sold through Matildas Fruit Barn, Vecchios and Glasshouse Fruit Shop (on Steve Irwin Way), locals seemed to take to the unusual fruits and Tracy sold the entire crop. “This year because of the unusual weather, the plants have fruited early and we started picking in December. “We harvested three or four times what we did last year, but we’ve still got a fair way to go to reach the 20kg per tree that the literature says we can expect.” Harvesting is a difficult affair, as the plants are extremely thorny, meaning that long thick gloves are needed to prevent perforated hands and arms.

Community News Timmomatic inspires local dancers Teghans Dance Club students cannot wait to get back into another year of dance! Over this long summer break from dancing the students got their Hip Hop action fix when attending the Timmomatic concert on December 7. In September Teghan had previously attended the Australian Dance Festival in Sydney, where for two days many well-known choreographers and Australia’s best dancers held and participated in workshops. Timmomatic had one of the most popular workshops, over 100 dancers participated and out of these, Teghan was selected as one of his top six! A moment not soon forgotten by Teghan! Upon returning to Dance Club after the festival, Teghan came back inspired and demonstrated what she had learned in Sydney to her students.

New home for Caloundra Family History group Last week’s Caloundra Family History general meeting on Thursday, January 16 was the last at the Guide Hut in Arthur Street, Caloundra, the groups’ base for the past 10 years. From February 1 the group will be ‘open for business’ following the Grand Opening Day at the new premises which are located at The Sunshine Coast Turf Club, at Corbould Park in Pierce Avenue, Caloundra. Thought about doing barbershop singing? The Sunshine Statesmen are part of the worldwide Barbershop singers’ organisation, which has over 35,000 members. They have been active as a group on the Sunshine Coast for over 20 years, and include well known local identities such as Tony Eccles. Barbershop singing is about harmony between the four parts (the leads, bases, baritones and tenors). The chorus has about 30 members and are looking to increase their numbers by holding free voice coaching lessons. If you like to sing, you are encouraged to come along and see what the Sunshine Statesmen have to offer. There is friendship, fun and companionship to go along with the singing. What’s new at the Museum? Contributed by Bereny Volunteers at Landsborough Museum are busy preparing for their next big exhibition in April, called ‘A letter home’, which will coincide with Queensland Heritage Week.

There will be dioramas depicting five eras in Landsborough’s history from the 1890s through to present day. And, as you can see in the photo, the team are struggling to find room to work among all the mannequins being dressed and prepared. There are many costumes to be made and we’re having a lot of fun designing the theme of each display – like the hippy era of the 60s and 70s. Later in the year, we’re planning another exhibition for Seniors Week in August / September and we always need new ideas for our ever-changing permanent displays. If there’s anyone out there who’d like to come in and join us in getting the exhibition ready, or just to become part of our volunteer force, please contact the museum on 5494 1755.
Caloundra & Hinterland Family Support Program A program for mums with babies under 12 months, which has been developed to support and nurture the transition to motherhood, will be run at Beerwah Library from February. The program promotes secure attachment between mother and baby by providing new mothers with information, practical experience and opportunities to celebrate the experience of motherhood. Over the duration of the program (running over six weeks for two hours one day a week) you will gain a deeper understanding and the skills to promote a secure attachment with your child, explore the many facets of motherhood in a nurturing environment, share experiences and develop support networks and friendships. We will be sharing the space with Qld Child Health Clinic so it’s also a great opportunity to check in with the child health nurse on your baby’s physical and developmental progress.

Glasshouse Musician’s Club is hosting an afternoon concert featuring two of the most exciting young folk groups this country has to offer on Sunday, February 16 at 3.00pm. ‘One Up, Two Down’, and ‘Oh Pep!’ have very contrasting and complimentary approaches to their music, and all six musicians are tight friends. So how did this collaborative tour come together? It starts back in 2012 when George Jackson, a NZ born fiddler living in Australia, was at a music camp in Florida to spend a week learning from some of the best fiddle tutors in the US. Another student at the camp that week was a prodigious young double bassist from North Carolina named Andrew Small, and it wasn’t long before these two musicians from opposite ends of the globe formed a friendship and began hatching a plan to start a band and get touring. A few weeks later, George and Andrew flew to California to attend a second music camp and it was there that they met up with Melbourne fiddler Pepita Emmerichs and the tour really began to take shape. A year and a half later, we have ‘One Up, Two Down’, George and Andrew’s band with Australian singer and guitarist Daniel Watkins, who recently recorded their debut EP in Nashville in September last year. Joining forces with Pepita’s award winning pop / folk band ‘Oh Pep’, who Andrew is performing with also. ‘Oh Pep!’ are musical explorers who travel in the form of a band; a collaboration between songwriters Olivia Hally (guitar, vocals) and Pepita Emmerichs (fiddle, mandolin), along with drummer Justin Olsson. Drawing upon their escapades, they take you on a carefully arranged folk / pop adventure for your ears. ‘One Up Two Down’ hail from three countries joined by the Pacific Ocean, George Jackson (NZ), Andrew Small (USA) and Daniel Watkins (AUS) bring together raw old-time power, bluegrass dexterity and rare gems from the American folk song tradition. This trio draws on a strong grounding in old-time and bluegrass music, extending their music to new compositions with far wider influences. By Lea Parkes Construction of the long awaited Coochin Twins residential estate has now commenced, with work on the road into the estate. The estate is located off Old Gympie Road, Beerwah approximately 200 metres south of the Peachester Road intersection, and is nestled between Coochin Creek and the Glasshouse Mountains National Park. The estate will comprise fully serviced township residential lots with town water, sewer, underground power and an abundance of open space and parkland. The project is being marketed by John King of Beerwah First National Real Estate, and is also listed with all local agents. John advised that enquiry has been solid over the Christmas period with several contracts either in place or in negotiation. He said the complete project will see 97 lots developed, however the first release will comprise 16 flat lots, ranging from 650 sq metres to 908 sq metres. “There are great introductory prices for early birds from under $190,000,” said John. “And the flat lots mean that houses can be built on standard foundations without expensive earthworks.” An exciting feature of the estate will be the abundance of open space both within the estate and on adjoining lands. The primary school is virtually on the doorstep and other schools and facilities are nearby. A pathway will be constructed following Coochin Creek to link with the Roberts Road parklands which will provide good access to the school and sporting precinct and the township. The early bird incentive package has generated considerable interest and titles are expected on the first lots about mid-year. Chris and Anthony Grieve of local contractor CA Earthmoving are undertaking the current works. The project is being developed by a local syndicate who have set a high standard for this unique development site. After lengthy delays in the planning and approval process, they are pleased that work has finally started and excited about the site’s natural attributes. They have a commitment to its environmental enhancement. “There are wide streets, major revegetation areas, and even a fauna corridor linking the national park to the bushland around the creek. We are aiming for a rural look and feel,” John said.

Red tape cuts for small business
The Federal Government has taken a major step to reduce red tape for employers by streamlining superannuation payments. Member for Fisher Mal Brough said the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) will take over the running of the Small Business Superannuation Clearing House from April. The Clearing House is a free online service that helps small businesses with 19 or fewer employees (an employee is defined as an individual who is employed on a full-time, part-time or casual basis) pay superannuation contributions in one transaction to a single location thus reducing red tape and compliance costs. “Currently most businesses have had to do all the paperwork themselves as well as distribute money to the various super funds – the clearing house will now do all this for them,” Mr Brough said. “The tax office will be responsible for distributing contributions to individual accounts. There are no changes for employers already using the clearing house as it is a backroom change from the Department to the ATO. I have ridden that trail for the past 15 years and I have seen that trail rough and easy. The section you are talking about is narrow and winding, that’s fine. You travel about 5 to 8km an hour by bike, any person coming the other way, you can stop in your track, that’s why you have brakes, eyes and common sense. May I remind you it’s more unpredictable to bike ride along Mooloolaba beach front than Ewen Maddock walking trail with many people going in various directions and under five kids. Does that mean we have to stop people from walking along the beach front, due to the bikes? When does common sense kick in instead of the law / safety? How far do you wish to take this? The ppm of CO2 may be changing but the concentration expressed as a percentage (the ratio of CO2 to other components in the atmosphere) seemingly has not - implying that the level of other components of the atmosphere must be changing to maintain this equilibrium - which should open up another line of debate! Des believes that last September’s average was higher than any previous month in Australia’s climate history. A courageous claim as this continent appears to have been around for a few million years now but our substantiated records are of a somewhat shorter time span. We may well have had the hottest year since 1910 but, so what? The climate cycles over a 200 to 300 year period and a single year is of little consequence. This year, or the next, may well be the coldest in our history - who knows? We can all quote alleged ‘facts’ (myself included) to support one’s position.

The ‘science’ that finds its way into the mainstream media (and some alternative media) constantly fails proper logical analysis and review. Although it is often touted as ‘fact’, science is far from it - it is rife with assumptions and fudge factors. Scientists are trying to find that elusive universal theory which explains all aspects of our physical (and non-physical) existence. It is most unlikely that it will be discovered in any of our lifetimes. A book well worth reading which touches on the topic of science and its place in the explanations of our existence is ‘A Brief History of Time’ by Stephen Hawking - a book not as daunting as its title and author may suggest. May I reiterate what Michelle has expressed in 'You Said It' January 15 edition. Early every Saturday morning, I drive from Glenview to King Street, Buderim at about 5.45am. I am constantly on the lookout for bicyclists and inevitably come across them on Dixon Road heading up the hill, or down again, side by side by side by side by side. Four, sometimes three, and many times two abreast. They've made their noises and asked that we as motorists respect their rightful path, however, it is with this returned respect that we as motorists ask them to adhere to the cyclists rules of the road also. They are: Bicyclists, must obey all general road rules. Be aware of other road users and keep a distance of about one metre between you and other vehicles. If you need to cross a continuous white edge line along the shoulder, you must give way to vehicles first. Shoulder check regularly to know what other traffic is doing. Be predictable: ride in a straight line and use hand signals to let other road users where you are going.

Cyclists have the same rights and responsibilities as all other road users but they must adhere to them. On numerous occasions I have been forced to slow down to 35kph in a 60kph zone complete with double lines which I am loathe to cross due to oncoming traffic. This is due to side by side by side by side cyclists who are oblivious to my approach because they're chatting! I toot softly to let them know I'm behind them and ... what do I get? For some years, a certain American who controls the large part of the newspapers and other media in Australia has been pressuring journalists to present his personal points of view. Often these are destructive of fair political process and very often destructive of the truth. Very disappointing
Recently we decided to venture out for lunch on a Monday. We are members of a club in the Glasshouse area but as they don’t serve lunch on Mondays we couldn’t go there. So off we go to Beerwah RSL knowing they serve lunch every day. We arrived, signed in and my daughter and I were asked if we were members of the club and we both said no. We were then asked if we were members of other local clubs in the area, we said yes, and were asked if we could show our cards. We both didn't have them so we were refused entry and asked to leave. Are we getting so out of touch in our small community that we are refused service because we simply forgot our card from another local club? Really Beerwah RSL. CCTV to cut break-ins
I was dismayed to hear of another break-in in Beerwah about 4.45am on January 9 at Total Microsystems. Hard working people should not have to put up with this. They should also not have to go to the expense of installing bars in their windows to prevent further attacks. Unfortunately, this is what the owners have been forced to do. This is why, during the election, I pledged to provide $150,000 funding for CCTV technology to help fight anti-social behaviour in Beerwah and Landsborough. We will be pushing the $150,000 through the upcoming budget process and will hope to have funding online in the 2014-15 financial year.
Government listens to your call for Blackspot Action
Well, the exact date has yet to be decided, but the good news is Malcolm Turnbull’s Parliamentary Secretary for Communications Paul Fletcher has agreed to visit early this year to discuss the Government’s $100 million regional mobile coverage program. This follows excellent community support for our fair share of the program, especially from people around Glass House Mountains. We’ve already had more than 100 people registering to attend the meetings. Also my office has been working with Telstra and local residents to gauge the extent of the problem and identify possible intermediate solutions. But, while Mr Fletcher has agreed to hear your concerns first-hand, there are a number of electorates eligible for this funding. So there will be strong competition to determine which sites are funded. Inadequate mobile phone coverage is a significant concern for our hinterland communities. Expanding mobile phone coverage has clear benefits to public safety – as well as to the productive capacity of regional communities. We’ll have details of the meeting time and place soon. Child care centres celebrate New Year
Small education and care services throughout Queensland are welcoming in the New Year with legislative changes that reduce their red tape burden. The new Education and Care Services Act 2013 (ECS Act) came into effect on January 1 and is now making life easier for 63 services around Queensland. One of the most significant changes is that staff no longer have to submit extensive applications for licence renewal and instead will be visited by a government representative at least every three years to ensure standards are being maintained. I am pleased to see that these changes will not only reduce the regulatory burden for these services but will also improve the educational outcomes for the children.

Doorpost of the new year? A couple of years ago, my family surprised me with a party for one special birthday. Sometimes God surprises us with his ingenuity. What did He do when He was about to bring the Israelites out of Egypt? Yes there were the plagues, the irritation of Pharaoh by Moses and his proclamations and pleas for release. But when it came time for the Israelites to leave their slavedom and re-emerge as their own nation, God started off their new time with the Passover. This was described as a part of their new year. Exodus chapter 12 is an amazing illustration of how starting the new year with God can have spectacular results. Yes there was the salvation motif of the lamb blood around the door frame. There was the distress of the Egyptians with their family losses. Most dramatic was the stealthy exodus of hundreds of thousands of families from Egypt without obstruction by their masters. But even the escapees could only really leave unhindered if the blood was spread on their house doorway. So important to the new culture of the liberated people was this event that it became a landmark in their lives for hundreds of generations. But did the meaning change with time? Sometimes the celebrations we create

can lose their meaning over time. Birthdays, Christmas, Easter, Australia Day, and even Anzac Day can be celebrated for all the wrong reasons. This week, last year’s Year 12 students will probably find out which courses at university they have been accepted into. In just over a week school starts again with students being one year ahead of the last attendance. Families have shifted house because of job opportunities. Time does not stand still. We can have new beginnings in many aspects of our lives. As the ancient Israelites needed the blood on the door posts to be saved from their predicament, we too need salvation through the blood of the Son of God. His death and resurrection are events which could lose meaning for us. Let’s not have that happen in 2014.

If you own a rural property on the Sunshine Coast and would like to protect and enhance the biodiversity of your land and of the region, why not consider applying for a Landholder Environment Grant? Landholder Environment Grants have a three stage application process with all interested applicants required to first submit an Expression of Interest form by 5.00pm February 24. A council officer will then arrange to visit your property to discuss the project and funding amounts, with the final stage of the process being an online application. Holder of Community Programs and Environment Portfolios, Councillor Jenny McKay said the Landholder Environment Grants enabled council to work together with the community to help the environment. “These grants allow a partnership approach to the delivery of projects that protect our region’s natural assets, preserve the biodiversity of the region and promote ecologically sustainable management of our environment,” said Cr McKay. “Funded by the Environment Levy, the Landholder Environment Grants assisted 182 landholders last year to the value of $480,112. “Projects that are eligible for funding may include fencing to restrict stock access to vegetation and waterways, revegetation to restore degraded areas or establish vegetation corridors and control of environmental weeds to rehabilitate native vegetation areas. “Priority will be given to projects with high ecological value, creating balance between people and the environment.” While expressions of interest for the Landholder Environment Grant must be submitted by 5.00pm, February 24, applications will not be required until after a council officer has visited your property. Applications will be due before April 23. You have to make sure that they have good drainage, you fertilise them regularly, keep the weeds away from their shallow roots, and watch out for the normal types of citrus pests,” said Tracy. If you haven’t used finger limes in your culinary endeavours, Tracy says that they are a versatile fruit that can be used to substitute for limes in most situations. “The small citrus pearls – also called lime caviar – have a flavour which is similar to that of a lemon-lime-grapefruit combo. “The fruit juice is acidic and similar to that of a lime, and the fruit makes excellent marmalade, chutney, jams, savoury sauces and pickles. The finger lime peel can be dried and used as a flavouring spice. “They can be used to garnish Asian salads and seafood, added to desserts, made into spreads like lemon butter, put into curries, or sliced and squeezed into drinks. “In a sparkling drink, the tiny ‘jewels’ float up and down with the bubbles – so they are perfect in champagne. “The fruits can also be frozen without destroying their flavour or texture on thawing, meaning that you can use them all year round.” Their website (www.coonowrinfingerlimes.com) has everything you need to know about finger limes as well as Tracy’s tried and tested recipes – and from the tasting done at her farm, I can attest that finger limes are just fantastic.

Three games of triples were played with Noelle Dean, Maurine Dawes and Marleen Bertram defeating Leisa Craven, Margaret Porter and John McSwain; Debbie Dale, Kate White and Di Hunt def Debbie Dale (playing for both teams), Jenny Hobson and Joy Reason; Dave Clarke, Dennis Hume and Jim Tatum def Grahame Young, Richard White and Rob Scullion. Thursday morning ‘Open Pairs’ was won by Kevin Beasley and Kerry Capern winning two games and a score of 28. The runners-up, being the winners of the losers, were Julie and Steve Palmer with 11 in game two. Coach Ben Haycroft has brought new ideas to the pre season training program which is keeping the boys interested while pushing to improve their fitness level. Training is being held at the Tunnel Ridge Road, Landsborough facility on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 5.30pm and with solid numbers already turning up, this looks to be a good year for the club. The doctors at the Landsborough and Mooloolah Medical Centres have been providing an after hours service for their patients for the past twenty- nine years but it has now been decided to adopt the Federal Government’s initiative of the After Hours GP Helpline which has been established since 2011. When you, as a patient, call the service, your call is answered by a registered nurse who triages your condition. If the nurse determines that you could benefit from speaking to a GP, you will be transferred to a helpline GP. The GP will talk to you, assess your condition, and provide medical advice. Upon advice from the nurse and or GP, you may be able to manage your condition at home, or until you can see your usual GP during normal business hours. Where self-management is not possible and your condition cannot wait until the next day for treatment, you will be directed to Family Care Medical Services who are now our after hours medical services. Jack addresses the man behind the counter: "Are you the owner?" The pharmacist answers, "yes." Jack: "We're about to get married. Do you sell heart medication?" Pharmacist: "Of course we do." Jack: "How about medicine for circulation?" Pharmacist: "All kinds." Jack: "Medicine for rheumatism?" Pharmacist: "Definitely." Jack: "How about suppositories?" Pharmacist: "Yes."
