Hi Everyone...
Welcome to our second online only GC&M News and thanks for ‘clicking the link’ and having a read. Our front cover this week gives you a bit of a hint of this week’s theme. Theme, what theme? Since when did the weekly paper need a theme? Well, since there isn’t too much news, events or things going on we have decided to make some changes to how we put our stories together, which may include a weekly theme. Also as people have a little bit more time on their hands we have put together some longer stories from across the townships of Glasshouse Country & Maleny that reflect on many different aspects of what ANZAC Day is all about and how we will be marking the occasion this year. You may also notice as you get into this week’s edition that we have started adapting how we present the pages to take advantage of this new online world;
we have increased the size of the font and spacing in the layout, as well as making the photos larger, so we hope this helps improve the readability. Knowing how much our readers enjoy a laugh we are also now including an extra cartoon which will be on our ‘You Said It’ page, and we have opened up the space for our ‘jokes’. And to encourage readers to send us their ‘suitable jokes’ they will go into a monthly draw for a $50 gift card to buy groceries - see the Fun page for more details. There will now be two Sudokus printed in the paper each week, we will be adding daily crosswords to our website / Facebook page, and as of next week’s edition you will be able to do the crosswords in the paper online! I am currently describing this online version of the paper as a ‘work in progress’ as we continue to change how and what we will be including each week. ANZAC Day Marking ANZAC Day differently in 2020 RSL Queensland are calling on the ANZAC spirit of ingenuity to find a unique way to commemorate this year. Did you know that one of the qualities the ANZACs were famous for was their ingenuity? When soldiers landed at Gallipoli on 25 April, 1915 they weren’t carrying the equipment or supplies required for trench warfare. Although supplies were brought in throughout the campaign by boat, they could be delayed or destroyed, so soldiers had to be industrious and inventive. They made weapons, equipment, board games and stationery from items they found around them. The cancellation of traditional ANZAC Day services this year has been sad, but it has forced us to channel some of the ANZAC spirit of ingenuity as we think of new and different ways to mark this special occasion. Following are RSL Queensland's top ten ideas that you and your family can do around this time to honour our Defence personnel, past and present, and ensure their service and sacrifice is not forgotten.
1.Light Up The Dawn On ANZAC Day, let’s ‘light up the dawn’ to commemorate all those who have served and sacrificed for this nation. The Queensland RSL are asking Australians to stand at the end of your driveway, on your balcony or porch, or in your living room to remember all those who have served and sacrificed for this nation. From 6am, the RSL will be streaming a short commemorative service, comprising: The Ode, The Last Post, a minute’s silence, and Reveille. 2.Plant rosemary Gardening is a great activity for your mind and body. And you will be able to reap the benefits you sow in the months and years to come. Now is the perfect time to work on a gardening project, so why not plant some rosemary to mark the occasion. 3. Make a rosemary wreath If you already have some rosemary in your garden, you could make a rosemary wreath to hang on your door!
4. Bake ANZAC biscuits It wouldn’t be ANZAC Day without these golden, oaty treats. 5. Help an older veteran Older members of our community are particularly vulnerable right now, so if you know an older veteran who is selfisolating or doesn’t have any friends or family around, why not offer to do their shopping, mow their lawn or even just give them a phone call and have a chat.
6. Donate to the ANZAC Appeal In a normal year, you would see RSL Sub Branch members in shopping malls and on street corners in the lead-up to ANZAC Day selling badges to raise funds to support veterans. That won’t be possible this year, but they will still need money to support local veterans, so consider making a donation to the ANZAC Appeal.
7. Enjoy a gunfire breakfast Another iconic ANZAC Day tradition is the ‘gunfire breakfast’. Historically, gunfire is a British drink made from black tea and rum. It was often served to soldiers before a morning attack as a form of Dutch courage. The name likely stems from the morning gun in a garrison town. The ‘gunfire breakfast’ seems to have
evolved over time and can be ‘coffee and rum’, ‘stew, sausage and bread’, or even ‘bacon and eggs’. The latter is usually served by the Australian War Memorial for their ‘gunfire breakfast’ on ANZAC Day. Why not enjoy one with your family after your own special Dawn Service this year.

8. Video call your loved ones
The reason many Australians hold ANZAC Day so close to their hearts is because they use the day as an opportunity to remember the sacrifices made by their loved ones. Don’t let this year be any different – create a shrine in honour of them using photos, flowers and a candle. You could also make your own wreath at home with leaves or flowers from your garden or supermarket.
A good way to stay connected with your friends and family if you can’t physically stand beside them on ANZAC Day is to have a video chat or phone call. Thanks to technology, there are lots of ways you can do this, including Skype, Facebook Messenger, Zoom, Apple FaceTime or Google Hangouts. Being able to see the faces of your nearest and dearest will brighten your day and allow you to commemorate the occasion together.

ANZAC Day Keeping alive the spirit of the Light Horse By Sonia Clark
a historical context at parades and public events. While not a military organisation, the troop do strive to portray a military unit and so rely on original military manuals and anecdotal evidence to help the regiment conduct themselves as near as possible with historical accuracy. Troop Commander Rob Werry said that
while current circumstances have curtailed this years’ ANZAC Day parades, he is hopeful that if contact restrictions are lifted later this year, the troop may be able to attend ceremonial events - such as bigger events marking the battle of Beersheba in October and Remembrance Day in November.
ANZAC Day is usually one of the busiest days of the year for the 5th Light Horse Regiment, Maleny Troop, with members and their horses traditionally attending a number of services and events around the Sunshine Coast. Current health directives to manage COVID-19 have put the long-running re-enactment troop activities on hold, however GC&M News thought it timely to shine a light on the troop, what they do and what type of community events they usually attend. Formed in 1992, The 5th Light Horse Regiment, Maleny Troop is a volunteer association who strive to keep alive the spirit of the Light Horse. Based at the Beersheba Living Museum in the Maleny Community Precinct, the troop is custodian to authentic and replica memorabilia, and information boards associated with WW1 and in particular, the 5th Light Horse Regiment. “Normally we would be parading at various ANZAC Day events this coming weekend. A typical ANZAC Day would include members attending the dawn service at Caloundra, which is always a challenge getting our horses ready in the dark, followed by the RSL parade in Caloundra,” explained Rob. “We also attend the Maroochydore service and Maleny RSL street parade, and visit Erowal and the Maleny Soldiers memorial hospital.” Rob said that other highlights during the year include the troop’s attendance at the annual Australia Day parade in Buderim which involves five different light horse troops from the Sunshine Coast, educational visits to local schools and visits to aged care facilities. “Our visits to aged care facilities involve our members dressed in full historical uniform along with their horses. For some elderly people it really brings back a lot of memories from their past, especially to see the horses. It can be a quite emotional for many and even a bit of tear jerker for our members too, but it’s lovely to be able to brighten up people’s day,” said Rob.

The 5th Light Horse Regiment, Maleny Troop currently has around 12 members and ten horses, with fundraising for the troop’s activities entirely reliant on membership and donations from the local community private and business sectors. Rob said that while membership numbers may be small, the troop manages to pack a big punch when it comes to attending events and sharing their knowledge of Australian Light Horse achievements and traditions with the community. “We’re only a small troop but we sure do get around! Our focus now will be to follow health directives until it is safe to open the museum and training grounds again, and hopefully we will be able to attend events again later in the year. We’ll be looking
forward to planning for Australia Day 2021, which we hope will provide a great opportunity to get out there and celebrate with others what we’ve all been through,” said Rob. A number of different volunteer roles are available for interested people including those with an interest in administration or historical memorabilia, roles for those who have a love of horses but don’t wish to ride, as well as positions for additional riders with an interest in the ethos of military re-enactment. ANZAC Day Gilvear Room honours local family By Sonia Clark At its recent re-opening ceremony, the Glasshouse Country RSL unveiled the naming of one of the refurbished rooms – the Gilvear Room – in honour of the pioneering local Gilvear family. The naming of the room honoured the considerable cost of war to the Gilvear family who sadly lost three sons during World War I, as well as acknowledging the substantial effort of younger family members William (Bill) Gilvear, who was involved in the early days of the RSL Sub Branch, as well as his son, Lex Gilvear. Family member Dawn Parker, the niece of the boys who lost their lives, attended the official opening on behalf of the Gilvear family, along with her sister Joan Velthuis and cousin Brenda Braise, who still lives in the area. She said it was a very nice honour for the family. “I felt it was lovely of the RSL to name the room after our family. It was a nice way to acknowledge the substantial family loss, which saw three boys killed and three injured during World War I, as well as all the work that Uncle Bill and his son Lex contributed to the local RSL in later years,” Dawn said. The Gilvear family were a large, well-
known local family of 12 who sent six of their sons along with the family patriarch, Thomas Gilvear, to fight at the Western Front during the war of 1914-1918. Originally from Scotland, the family emigrated to Australia in 1911, moving to Bundaberg. In 1915, Thomas and his wife Christina relocated to Glass House Mountains where they ran a banana farm with their six eldest sons before the outbreak of war. In May 1916, Thomas signed up at the age of 43 along with six of his sons. The following year, as an example of how challenging it would have been for Christina to almost single-handedly run the family property, one of the older sons, James Smith Gilvear, was granted ten days’ leave to help his mother plant an acre of bananas – as there was no one left to help on the family farm. Sadly, while caring for the remaining four children and managing the farm, Christina received telegrams with the news that three of her sons had been killed on the battlefields of France. In a tragic loss for one local family, Lance Corporal Alexander Smith Gilvear was killed in 1917 at Bullecourt, Private Robert Gilvear family members Brenda Briese, Joan Velthuis and Dawn Parker
Private Thomas Gilvear (Snr) Gilvear was killed in 1918 near Albert, and Corporal Kenneth Gilvear was killed in action in 1918 at Sailly-le-Sec. In July 1918, Private Thomas Gilvear received a letter from Lieutenant General Sir William Birdwood advising that due to the loss of his sons Thomas was approved to return to Australia. The letter acknowledged that Thomas had suffered more than his fair share for his country. The Gilvear's other sons Sergeant Thomas Gilvear Jnr, Private James Gilvear and Private John Gilvear were all wounded in action. While this level of loss for one family may seem unusual in today’s world, it was not uncommon to small towns, especially during World War I when young men had enlisted in large numbers lured by the promise of adventure and national pride to fight for their country. Often brothers and mates enlisted in the same units, going together into battle never to return home. At the end of the war, it was reported that Beerwah townspeople climbed Mt Coochin, one of the Glass House Mountains, and lit a celebration fire. One local resident stated at the time that "everywhere you looked there were bonfires on hilltops", though sadly for three of the Gilvear boys they would never see their home town mountains again.

Restoring of Glass House Mountains WW1 Honour Board For those who use the Glass House Mountains Community Hall in Coonowrin Road, you may have noticed that the World War 1 Honour Board, usually affixed to the side wall of Hall, has been missing. The Honour Board was commissioned towards the end of WW1 and was originally located at the Glass House Mountains Railway Station. According to the Brisbane Courier, October 11, 1918, it was unveiled at a ceremony held on Saturday, October 5, 1918 by Mr R J Warren MLA in the presence of 60 guests. The Chairman of the committee, Mr W Lister, spoke feelingly on what the board meant to the relatives and friends whose names appeared thereon. He also spoke of repatriation and the future of the soldier, and trusted that people would not lose sight of the fact that the soldiers had fought to keep their homes from the enemy. The Board, when it was unveiled, showed only 17 names – the remaining three names (T Rose, J Doak and P Hennessey) were added later, although it is not known why they were not on the Board at the unveiling.
In April 1921 public consent was gained to relocate the Board to the School of Arts building, and the Southern Queensland Fruitgrowers’ Association gave permission for this to occur. This would probably have been in response to the formation of a Returned Soldier’s League in February 1921, and the subsequent use of the School of Arts as a focus point for functions – there being no separate RSL building until after WW2. It would no doubt also ensure that the Board would be
better protected and more secure. In late 2019 an application was made to the Sunshine Coast Council for funding to conserve and preserve this significant 100-yearold Honour Board – possibly one of the oldest memorial boards in the Sunshine Coast area. The application was successful, and work is currently progressing under the capable eye of Melanie Fihelly, a well-qualified conservator. It was hoped that the work would be completed in time for ANZAC Day, so watch this space for further updates. The Hall committee thanks the Sunshine Coast Council Heritage Levy – Collection Care Program for making funding available for this work. The Hall is currently closed due to restrictions necessitated by the COVID-19 virus. Activities at the Hall will recommence once it is safe to do so. ANZAC Day 2020 the 75th anniversary of end of WW2 With the cancellation of Marches for ANZAC Day, in response to the Coronavirus crisis, many WW2 veterans like long-term Sunshine Coast resident, Mick Scott, are disappointed that this year may be the first time in 75 years that they will be unable to march on April 25 to remember their fallen comrades. Mick Scott, now 99 years of age (he turns 100 later in the year), always attends an ANZAC Day march and service, which he usually shares with his family and friends. Many of the marches he has participated in over the years have been at Landsborough, where he had a 25 year history of involvement from the early 1950’s with the then Landsborough RSL Sub Branch. However, this year will be a very different experience as contact with family and friends will be limited. While Mick respects, understands and supports the restrictions we now living under, he hopes he will still be able to have a beer with a friend - but at a safe distance. Born in Muttaburra, western Queensland in 1920, Mick grew up in the Muttaburra area and was working as a stockman at the outbreak of WW2 in September 1939. He decided to join the RAAF and was formally enlisted in February 1940, where he was assigned to 10 Squadron and later that year was deployed to Great Britain where he served in Coastal Command as a tail gunner on the Sunderland Flying Boat. He spent the duration of the war based mainly in Britain, which also included missions to other European theatres of the war, North Africa and the Mediterranean. During the War in Cardiff in Wales, Mick met and married Muriel Trott in 1942, with two of their children born during the war years. In 1946 the Scott family returned to Australia settling at Eudlo on a pineapple
and banana farm, where two more children were added to the family. At Eudlo Mick and Muriel became involved in community life which included being associated with the establishment of an RSL Sub Branch in Eudlo, in which Mick was the Sub Branch treasurer. The Sub Branch has now closed and merged with the Palmwoods Sub-Branch. The original charter of the RSL Eudlo Sub Branch is still on display at the Palmwoods Memorial Hall. In 1951 the family moved to Landsborough where they soon became very active members of the Landsborough community including the Landsborough RSL Sub Branch when it was formed in January 1953. There had been a previous Landsborough Sub Branch established in about 1920, but it had folded. Mick held the positions of president and treasurer of the Landsborough Sub-Branch at various stages. In December 1991, due to declining membership, the Glass House Mountains and Landsborough Sub-Branches amalgamated into what is now the Glasshouse Country RSL Sub Branch; which is still active today and conducts ANZAC Day services and marches at both Glass House Mountains and Landsborough. After more than 25 years living in Landsborough Mick and Muriel left the area, initially returning to Cardiff in Wales for an extended period before setting in Kallangur in 1979, where Mick continued his involvement with the Pine Rivers RSL Sub Branch. In 1987, after another visit to Cardiff, Mick and Muriel retired to Golden Beach Caloundra, where Mick still lives today. Sadly, after more than seventy years of marriage Muriel passed away in 2013. These days Mick is a member of the

Caloundra RSL Sub Branch and he keeps himself busy as an active member of the Caloundra Power Boat Club where he enjoys the company of his fellow club members. Most afternoons a group of his friends gather at the same bench table overlooking the Pumicestone Passage which has become known as the ‘Table of Knowledge’ or TOK for short. He often plays golf at the Glenview Par 3 Golf Course and apart from his walks to the Power Boat Club, also walks regularly along the foreshore at Golden Beach which is the only activity he can now maintain under the current COVID-19 restrictions. While Mick will not be able to march in the Landsborough ANZAC Day march and service, he will show his respect for his fallen comrades by watching an ANZAC Day Service on television and observing a minute’s silence. He would like to encourage others to also remember the fallen on ANZAC Day by whatever avenue they feel appropriate including by watching a service on television or has been suggested by observing the minute’s silence in their driveway.

ANZAC Day will be very different this year, however, it is more important than ever that we all commemorate the ANZACs this Saturday. The commitment that we make together to honour the men and women of the Australian Defence Force, past and present, is not conditional - it is our duty to remember and to honour them, whatever the circumstances. It is not only our duty to commemorate ANZAC Day, it is also an emblematic part of our shared national identity. It is symbolic of our nations’ past challenges and how we overcame them with courage, self-sacrifice and dedication to others. These quintessential Australian values have never been needed so much as they are now. There are many ways you can commemorate the ANZACs this year. You can watch the televised national ceremony, which will be broadcast from the Australian War Memorial at 5.30am, or stand for a minute silence at 11.30am, the time here in Australia when the ANZACs landed.

Roosevelt is rightly considered one of the great people of history, a man who overcame great personal suffering and tragedy to lead a desperate nation in times of enormous troubles. The strength he spoke of however exists in us all. It exists within our hearts and souls, and is often seen when we are called upon to face challenges that in normal circumstances we would shy from. Yet there are different types of fear. The most confronting is the risk of losing your life. And so it was on April 25, 1915 that 16,000 Australians and New Zealanders faced their greatest challenge. They were about to land at what is now called Anzac Cove to confront thousands of Turks who had planned, resourced and manned the hills and ranges, training deadly firepower

They were young and many were never to be husbands, fathers or grandfathers, while others would leave widows, and children without a father. Many returned changed forever. From the carnage, the loss of innocence, the horror and deprivation, was forged a nation that looks to that time as a defining moment in relation to the Australian character. It was a defeat, a serious defeat, yet it was a victory of spirit. Today, that spirit lives throughout this nation in the hearts of every one of us. War must never be glorified, but those who offer themselves in the pursuit and protection of freedom must be. We are faced with hard choices yet our forebears show us that those choices are essential to protect our way of life. So today, 105 years later, we say to them and all who have fought for this country the simple words “thank you.” With that is the hope we never need face the fear they endured for eight long months. Lest we forget.
ANZAC DAY
I was recently asked if COVID-19 would be the greatest challenge to face my generation and those younger. It may well be. But, without belittling the current loss of life, illness, loss of jobs and livelihoods, and forced isolation … how lucky are we! We commemorate ANZAC Day this weekend, when we remember the nearly 103,000 Australians who have lost their lives, not to mention the countless number of men and women wounded and scarred mentally in armed conflicts. From the colonial military forces that served in Africa, through two World Wars, Korea, Malaya, Borneo and Vietnam, to peacekeeping missions in the Sinai, Persian Gulf, Rwanda, Somalia, East Timor and the Solomon Islands, and wars in Iraq and Afghanistan - the toll has been steep. Every job lost to COVID-19 is confronting. But the number of unemployed will not reach the staggering one in every three Australians without a job during the interwar Great Depression. We will come through this current pandemic because we have a country that
values life, because those who served our nation made the ultimate sacrifice. We will come through this pandemic because our forefathers fought for a strong democracy, one that we now often ridicule but would never replace for the alternative. We will come through this pandemic because our grandparents went without for years, not months, and allowed us to inherit an economy that rewards effort and offers a hand up to those who need it. We will come through these challenging times … because we owe it to their legacy! We will remember them. Lest we forget.

ANZAC Day Local ANZAC Day happenings By Lea Parkes While I am a big fan of anyone with artistic talent, and those that can turn their hand at all things craft, I have to admit it is not my strong point. So recently when I saw the instructions for an ANZAC Day wreath made from egg cartons and some cardboard I got pretty excited. I decided to see what GC&M News Facebook followers thought about the idea, so shared the ‘instructions’ with them and asked what they were planning to do on
the day? I got plenty of great responses, including Alison Edwards who was planning to turn the bases of milk bottles into beautiful poppy covered candle holders, Tamika Milgate who was part way through constructing her wreath from upcycled bases of coke bottles, while Kelly and Haley Wall (pictured) had turned their wheelie bin into an ANZAC work of art. last week they made ANZAC cookies. The very talented Louise Winton will be performing her own ANZAC tribute concert online from her home in Glass House Mountains - see her story on the next page. Well thanks ladies for all of your inspiration, I haven’t quite got around to finishing the wreath, but as Brownie always has plenty of rosemary growing in our garden, I might put a vase of it together to sit out the front of our place on Friday afternoon, so that anyone walking past can wear a piece of it on their chest on Saturday morning. One of our neighbours have letterboxed dropped out street to say her son has been practicing his bugle so we will be able to hear live music performed, which will no doubt be accompanied by one of our other neighbour’s rooster crowing. Like everything else at the moment, it will no doubt feel a little weird, but it is great that so many people are still going to find their own way to pay tribute.

ANZAC tribute concert in isolation By Sonia Clark Seasoned musical performer Louise Winton will be providing a special ANZAC Day ‘tribute in isolation’ online live performance, from her home in Glass House Mountains at 11am this Saturday April 25. Originally booked to sing at four ANZAC day events this year, which included performances at Glass House Mountains and Landsborough RSL commemorative ceremonies, Louise will now be live streaming her performance via her Louise Winton Sings Facebook page. With over 35 years professional singing experience, Louise said she could sing before she could speak, and while the COVID-19 restrictions may have heavily impacted thousands of performers, Louise said she has remained determined for her voice to be heard, with online performances a new way to continue to engage with audiences. “Even though we have restrictions, it is still ANZAC day and important to show our respects, and to express how thankful we are that we have the lifestyle we have

because of the sacrifice of others,” said Louise. The live stream event will feature Louise singing the New Zealand national anthem in Maori and English, followed by the Australian national anthem. ANZAC Day ABC to screen ANZAC Day service A nationally broadcast commemorative service will take place at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra on the morning of ANZAC Day, 25 April 2020. The ABC will begin pre-service programming from 5am, with the service broadcast live from the commemorative area and Hall of Memory from 5.30am. The event will not be open to the public but will be broadcast live across Australia and streamed online. Director of the Australian War Memorial, Matt Anderson PSM, said that the situation surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic makes this year’s ANZAC Day all the more important. “ANZAC Day is traditionally about acknowledging the resilience and fortitude demonstrated by the Anzacs at Gallipoli and the subsequent legacy that was born. Across the community, people are drawing upon their own resources to deal with this global health crisis,” Mr Anderson said. “It is vital that we have the opportunity to take time to pause and reflect on ANZAC Day, if not as some brief respite from the overwhelming nature of the pandemic, but because it’s what we do.
“ANZAC Day happens every year and it will happen in 2020, albeit in different circumstances. We are resolute in our commitment to ensuring Australians can honour the Australian servicemen and servicewomen who have served in the past, and recognise those who are currently serving.” Mr Anderson added that it is critical the Memorial’s ANZAC Day commemorative service includes a minimum number of people and adheres to government advice on gatherings of large groups and social distancing. The Chief Medical Officer for the Australian Government, Professor Brendan Murphy, has given formal approval for an exemption of social distancing restrictions for the commemorative service. “It must be stressed firmly that this event is not open to the public and that the intent of the broadcast of the commemorative service is to enable people to engage with ANZAC Day commemorations from home,” Mr Anderson added. The commemorative service will be attended by dignitaries representing the Commonwealth of Australia, the people of

Local News Welcome back Winston The hotly contended race for Division 5 at the recent local government election has finally come to a conclusion. Figures from the Electoral Commission of Queensland (ECQ) show that Winston Johnston is the new Councillor to replace the retiring Jenny McKay … by a rather small amount. The margin after the first votes were counted had Winston ahead 4,259 votes to 3,703. The margin between Winston and Queensland Greens candidate Tracy Burton remained roughly the same once all the preferences had been allocated (Johnston 5,232 – 52.75%; Burton 4,687 – 47.25%; margin 545). An unusually high number of voters – 5,655 or 14% of the enrolled voters – did not make their vote, and another 1,257 (7%) wasted their say by voting informally. ECQ figures also show that 6,833 properly made ballots did not fully allocate their preferences, and were thus exhausted and not counted towards the final outcome between Winston and Tracy. Living in Maleny, Winston is not new to the local government game. He was a Councillor in the Caloundra City Council,

Winston said “I wish to thank the voters for electing me as their Council representative for the next four years. “Whether you voted for me or not, I promise to always endeavour to advocate in Council on your behalf. “I will do so to the best of my ability after thoroughly researching issues and seeking advice from a wide range of advisors. “I want to place on record my personal admiration and recognition of the hard work and dedication of our retiring Councillor, Jenny McKay. “To the other nine candidates, thank you for the courteous and friendly manner in which you conducted yourselves during the election campaign,” Winston said. Tracy Burton put her strong showing down to running a grassroots campaign and a change in voter priorities. “We lost Division 5 by a mere 545 votes,” Tracy said. “While I am thrilled with that support, clearly Winston is to be congratulated on his success.
“Despite my disappointment, I want to assure Sunshine Coasters that the Greens will be watching the new council carefully, and holding it to account,” she said. Tracy attributed a split vote from the huge candidate field, along with optional preferential voting and a low voter turnout in the coronavirus lockdown, to presenting challenges in the election. “However, the journey does not stop here. “We will be running an excellent candidate in the state election in October, and will strive to turn that 47.25 per cent Greens vote into a seat in the Queensland Parliament,” she said.

Community News Women’s House providing hope for the homeless By Sonia Clark The Maleny Neighbourhood Centre (MNC) Women’s House is a Maleny community driven and supported initiative that seeks to provide temporary accommodation for women and children. Opening in December 2018, the initiative is solely dependent on community partnerships to enable its ongoing success, and to date, the Women’s House has provided hope to 14 women and 11 children. The initiative allows them to achieve what many of us take for granted – the opportunity to experience safe and stable temporary accommodation, as they transition to longer term solutions. MNC management committee member Barry Smith said that the MNC Women’s House is something the community should be extremely proud of, as a great example of community driven action that has resulted in a successful community collaboration that has sought to proactively address homelessness. “We see this trifecta of community engagement and capacity building as a real achievement, and one that the community should be very proud of,” said Barry.
Over the last few decades, rising living costs and rental competition, especially around the Hinterland towns, has created a need for help; apparent from the regular stream of those who present at the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre experiencing hardship, sleeping in cars or being in positions of vulnerability. Barry said there was a need for a safe place to be established to provide stable temporary accommodation for women and children in the lead up to securing longer term accommodation, which sometimes can take months to achieve. In late 2017, the MNC invited locals to a meeting to discuss ways to meet the lack of adequate housing for those in need. Community support was sought, and an initial funding of $15,000 was contributed by private individuals, businesses and community organisations. In 2018, a three-bedroom house was purchased by a local benefactor, and offered to MNC at below-market rent with the first three tenants at the Women’s House moving in early December 2018. Twelve months after commencing the project, social work researcher Louisa Dent conducted an independent review
and evaluation into the initiative, with her findings concluding that the Women’s House was working well in achieving its goals, and importantly making a huge real life difference to women and children in need. Barry said that he is pleased that this essential service has flourished and operates as part of MNC’s core services in partnership with the community. The initiative currently receives no government funding, so any donations to the MNC Women’s House (which as a donation to Maleny Neighbourhood Centre is tax deductible) are gratefully welcomed. “While some of our costs are covered by rent and rent rebates, we still require an additional $17,000 this financial year as part of the operational costs of the house,” said Barry. “We appreciate any contribution to this vital service, and are dependent on our community partners – individuals and local organisations – to keep this initiative that is changing lives, up and running.” If you wish to contribute to this service, please contact the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre on 5499 9345 or email info@malenync.org.au, more details can be found at www.malenync.org.au.

Join the Care Army today
Queenslanders are being urged to become part of the ‘Care Army’ and do what Queenslanders do best: look out for each other. Tasked with helping and protecting up to one million Queenslanders most at risk – those who are over 65 or over 50 if they’re of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent – the Care Army is being modelled on the incredible spirit shown by volunteers who formed the Mud Army after destructive floods and cyclones ravaged Queensland communities. Now the State Government are encouraging the Care Army to step up by reaching out to a family member, a friend or a neighbour to check on them during this time of crisis and ensure they have access to food, medical services and are not feeling isolated. You could call them for a chat, see if they need a hand with online shopping, or even host a family dinner over a video-call. It’s about bringing Queenslanders together to lend a hand to our most at-risk during the COVID-19 pandemic, while continuing to practice social distancing techniques. RangeCare keeping clients connected In these changing times it isn’t just local businesses that are adjusting the services they offer, it would seem that the team at RangeCare have also been busy creating ways to support the new and evolving needs of their clients and other members our community. The not-for-profit service provider has already been working with a number of local businesses to support locals who are staying safe in their homes during the COVID-19 crisis by ensuring they can have a range of frozen meals, as well as fruit and vege boxes and meat orders, delivered to their customer’s doorstep via one of RangeCare’s kind volunteers. They also have a qualified hairdresser who is available on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays to provide a haircut service in their client’s homes for only for $11. While these are important ways to take care of people’s practical needs during these strange times, for many, it is also the social isolation of staying in your home that is really challenging. To help ease the feeling of isolation, RangeCare have created an amazing new program focused on online social engagement. The opportunities available via technology can be wonderful, however, without the physical resources such as an iPad or computer in your house, the skills and
knowledge to use it, or in some instances, the bravery to even give the idea of learning something so new and daunting a try, some people may not even entertain the idea of giving the online world a go. To overcome these barriers, RangeCare will be providing a range of assistance; initially, this will be to their most vulnerable clients before expanding the service to all of their clients. The new program will see them offering an iPad loan service (free for the first three months), assisting with providing internet access (free for the first month), as well as providing a support team to coach clients through the use of the new technology. Learning to use new technology can open up so many wonderful opportunities for users, such as reading the local weekly online newspaper, participating in video chats with family and friends as well as shopping online. RangeCare will also be establishing a number of fun social engagement activities and events for all their clients, which may include games and quizzes, as well as song days and creative art days. The Member for Glass House Andrew Powell is encouraging students to consider participating in the Joyce Newton OOM Memorial Bursary this year. Mr Powell said in 2018, he and the communities of Glass House lost a true community champion – Joyce Newton OAM of Maleny. A high school teacher, Joyce was interested and involved in civic society, and she was determined that Queensland’s best days were still ahead of us. “To honour her legacy, last year I launched an annual bursary in memory of Joyce for Year 11 and 12 students who reside in the electorate of Glass House,” he said. Students are required to contribute a 1,000 word essay on ‘Why is the New Bradfield Water Scheme so important to our State?’ The topic was chosen by Joyce’s family and entries will be considered for one of two prizes. First prize is a $1,000 gift voucher for Concept IT at Maleny, acknowledgement of, and tabling of the essay in Queensland Parliament, and dinner for the winner and their family at Queensland Parliament. The second prize recipient’s essay will also be acknowledged and tabled in Queensland Parliament; and they will also receive dinner for themselves and one guest at Queensland Parliament.

Safer slopes for Peachester Road Work will start this week to strengthen embankments and improve safety on Peachester Road. Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said a crew of eight will lay new rocks on a 16m-long embankment half-a-kilometre east of Peachester. “Plenty of people are staying in their village and at home, making this a good time for crews to get stuck into important upgrades,” Mr Bailey said. “Not only will it pave the way for a safer road for 4,500 plus daily motorists when COVID-19 is over, it’ll provide a much-needed injection right now into the local economy, as well as crucial employment for our road workers.” A row of rock-filled wire cages will be put in place to support the embankment footing while maintenance works will also be carried out on the existing road drainage pipe. Caloundra RSL offers club premises in pandemic Last week the State Member for Caloundra Mark McArdle congratulated the Caloundra RSL Services Club and Sub Branch for offering its facilities to support local health services in the event that the Sunshine Coast suffers a crisis during the current pandemic. “The Caloundra RSL Services Club, while is it not able to function as usual, has determined that best opportunity it has to assist people across the Sunshine Coast is to offer the facilities of the club to assist in any overflow from the Sunshine Coast University Hospital if a crisis COVID-19 situation arises,” Mr McArdle said. “No one wants this to occur but I congratulate the RSL Services Club and Sub Branch on taking this initiative. I repeat, let’s hope this never has to be
taken up, but the RSL understands this is a time that, as a community, we need to pull together. “In a number of conversations with the RSL Services Club they agreed that its facilities, located in the precinct including parking, open floor space, kitchens and the like were sitting going to waste at this point. “They decided the offer would be made with the real hope that it will never be taken up.” Cathy Stamp, the president of the RSL Services Club said with the club premises not currently being used, they believe offering the facilities to be utilised by SCUH in the event of an emergency is the best way they can help. “This was a decision the Caloundra RSL Sub Branch, made with best interest of all Sunshine Coast residents in mind,” Mrs Stamp said. “Like any insurance policy we hope there never comes a time when we need to use it but at the end of the day planning for the future is so important. If the worst does arrive we have to be ready for it and the RSL is here to support our health workers however we can.”

Musings from a newly minted croquet player Helen Uhlmann is a new member to the Range Croquet Club at Maleny who was keen to share her experience with the club prior to the lockdown. Helen’s introduction to croquet came during a one-off social game organised for the Maleny Uniting Church Boomers, of which she is a member. Helen said when they turned up one Saturday morning, they were taught basic skills and led through a game of Aussie Croquet by members of the club; then was welcomed to share lunch. “It was a great morning and I was happy to discover how much fun the game was to play, even as a raw and unskilled beginner,” she said. Following this, she and two others from the group - Janelle Trendle and Annette Sinclair - decided to join in the Saturday morning classes, along with her neighbour, Janelle Wilson. Since that time Len Baker has also joined their little group of eager, and at times baffled, learners. The group’s coach Vince Carberry is, by nature and necessity, a very patient man and his guidance has helped them get started. “We are all thoroughly enjoying learning this fun and interesting game. As we go along, we are starting to understand the
methods and strategies of Association Croquet,” said Helen. “Janelle and I have come to see that we need to sharpen up our killer instincts, along with practicing our shots. “There is a great deal of mental challenge and strategy involved and I have come to think of the game as having similarities with both snooker and chess. “Janelle and I have gone on to become fully fledged members of the club (we even have been presented with our keys to attend at any time we like!). “We have been warmly welcomed, with various members being very generous with providing explanation, advice and encouragement during the couple of games we have played on a Thursday afternoon. “We have also spent a very pleasant afternoon on the lawns practicing by ourselves. “The weather was perfect and being out in the fresh air playing this fun game was just great.” Sadly, as with all other community activities, the club is currently closed, however Janelle and Helen are keenly looking forward to the club re-opening to resume their play. Helen would encourage anyone looking for a new interest to come along and join in with their happy little group of beginners

New water meters are being installed
In April, Unitywater will be identifying and replacing water meters nearing the end of their life cycle in Beerwah, Glass House Mountains and Mooloolah Valley. Affected residents will receive a notification card in their letterbox at least 48 hours before the works and an SMS where possible as crews are not currently door knocking due to COVID-19. Meters are replaced quickly so water outages for affected properties will be short. However, Unitywater will have water available for customers who need it and will deliver it to them while maintaining social distancing. Following meter replacement, a ‘works completed’ card is left in the resident’s letterbox which records the water consumption measured by the old meter. Customers are advised to keep this reading for reference and to cross check when they receive their next Unitywater account. No need to renew senior driver medical certificates
As part of wider efforts in response to COVID-19, senior Queensland drivers aged 75 and older will not be required to visit their doctor or optometrist to obtain a medical certificate to meet senior driver licensing requirements. Medical certificates for this purpose that expired after 29 January 2020 will be considered valid until six months after the COVID-19 emergency ends. During this emergency period, senior drivers will not be committing an offence if they drive while not holding a valid medical certificate. With the risk of serious illness from Coronavirus much higher among older people these changes will help to reduce the risk of virus exposure senior Queensland drivers would face when visiting a clinic and taking medical exams. Have you dressed up for bin day? By Sonia Clark Who would have thought that taking out the bin during self-isolation or quarantine could be so much fun? For Logan Beitz and his neighbours at Cayenne Court, Glass House Mountains, their weekly bin collection day provided a brilliant opportunity for residents of the cul-desac to break the boredom by getting outside and showing off some wacky and wonderful outfits. Logan said the call to dress up on bin day was put out via their neighbourhood Facebook group page, and was a great way to get everyone who was staying safe at home outside, be a bit social and most importantly to have a laugh. “Every house in Cayenne Court belongs to our Facebook group, with many of our residents a bit older or retirees – though there are a couple of younger people like me,” said Logan. “With social restrictions in place, especially over Easter, we got chatting online and thought that dressing up for bin day would be a great way to get the neighbours outside for a bit of fun and to
have some laughs.” The neighbourhood’s Facebook group was initially set up last year to connect with each other for their street’s social gatherings, such as Christmas in July and their annual street Christmas party. Since then, the Facebook group has provided a regular source of interaction with members regularly posting funny pictures, memes and updates of what’s happening in the neighbourhood. Logan said that in the past the neighbours would aim to get together every few months with games, drinks and nibbles, though with the current social restrictions in place, the social-minded group have been unable to hold their regular get togethers - so the ‘bin day outing’ was a Mark fun way to connect. Logan reckons the “best things come around once", so there are no plans to Jo repeat the bin day dress up for Cayenne Jo Court, but if any other readers are planning a similar ‘outing’, we’d love to see your pics; which can be emailed through to us at editorial@gcnews.com.au.

Division 5 - Sunshine Coast The Electoral Commission of Queensland (ECQ) count of votes in Division 5 has progressed very slowly due to COVID-19 protocols. After counting and distributing preference votes I finished 545 votes ahead of the Greens candidate Tracy Burton. Thank you to each of the candidates, you all conducted your campaigns in a friendly and professional manner. The percentage of votes counted is low because some 23% of eligible voters did not cast a vote. Interestingly a large majority of formal votes showed no preference allocation. Perhaps this was because handing out of ‘How to Vote Cards’ was banned by ECQ. The ECQ officially declared the results late last week, and the swearing in of Councilors occurred last Friday. Once we officially take up duties, we will be entering uncharted waters as the usual processes have been changed due to social distancing and other COVID-19 restrictions. The first official general council meeting is proposed for April 30. Unfortunately, these same COVID-19 restrictions mean I am unable to visit each Division 5 community for the foreseeable future. This is quite frustrating as it impacts enormously upon the usual role of a Councillor. For the next few weeks/months I can be contacted on 0429 076 066 or you can send an email via the Sunshine Coast Council website.Once we have officially been sworn in we will be allocated individual email addresses. With ten candidates the result in Division 5 was hard to predict due to seven distinctly separate towns and thirteen districts in Division 5. It is impossible for any single candidate to be well known throughout the Division unless they are an incumbent. During this term I will work hard to rectify that situation by visiting each community on a regular basis. I wish to thank everyone who sent best wishes, phoned for an update, or followed the ECQ website in frustrated anticipation of a result. Also, a heartfelt thank you to all my helpers, supporters and everyone who trusted me enough to vote for me.

Our members are staying safe and maintaining social distancing until such time as we can safely return to our fundraising activities and projects. Business owner Bryan Hill said that their mobile service was proving useful to help customers who required mobility assistance products, but needed to remain at home. It’s been a tough time for the community in recent months, with the COVID-19 crisis hot on the heels of widespread devastation caused by Australian bushfires. Earlier this year the team at Scooters & Mobility Sunshine Coast committed to supporting the bushfire relief efforts by pledging to donate a portion of sales from their most popular items during February. Bryan said he was very pleased that their fundraising effort raised $2,290 which was split between a donation of $1,145 to Rural Fire Service Qld, and the remainder divided evenly amongst the Salvation Army, St Vincent De Paul, W.I.R.E.S and Red Cross. “I’m really proud that we were able to support such a worthy cause, and thank the support of our customers and team to

Local Eats Thrifty ideas to make your food go further By Kali Gray
Are you feeling the financial squeeze of the cost of food? With the economy feeling about as stable as a stack of cards on quicksand, many of us are tightening our belts. Yet there’s one expense we can’t avoid: Food. So this week, we’ve put together a list of ways you can save money, store food properly and ultimately make your meals go further: • When making spaghetti, replace half of your mince with tinned lentils. • Cook up fritters once a week using a mix of root veggies, onion, flour and egg. This is very inexpensive and great the next day on sandwiches or wraps. • Transform ripe fruit into a night time treat by poaching, steaming with flavours, and then serving with some ice cream. • Make milk from full or skim milk powders (if you don’t like the taste for fresh uses like cereal or coffee, this tip works particularly well in baking). • Prepare porridge from packet oats vs single serve porridge sachets. • Buy block cheese and grate it yourself at home.

• Create an ‘end of the week’ ritual by making a soup or casserole out of the leftover veggies. Add a meat of your choice or even get creative and make a Shepherd’s Pie. • Make homemade muffins as snacks for yourself and the family. Home baking is usually far cheaper than pre-packaged snacks. • Opt for frozen veg - it gets a bad rap but is still plenty nutritious and often far cheaper than fresh produce. • Choose ‘long life’ veggies that are less likely to spoil, such as pumpkin, sweet potato, apples, citrus, celery, potatoes, beans, sugar snap peas, snow peas, beetroot. • Bulk out stir fries with tofu, tempeh or extra veggies. • Make popcorn from scratch as a healthy, inexpensive family snack. • Avoid fruit that looks very ripe (unless it’s for same day use). • Eat seasonally - it’s often far cheaper. • Stock up on a little canned veg - this is a great standby if you do run out of fresh produce before your next shop.
• Mix up your Mexican tacos and burritos with black beans or refried beans, instead of beef or chicken. • Transform browning bananas into homemade banana bread or muffins. • Try this thrifty meal: Boiled potatoes, cut into four, covered with baked beans and cheese. Serve with a side of (cooked) frozen veggies. • For a yummy, protein filled snack, try spiced chickpeas. • Make hummus from scratch instead of buying store bought dips. • Try cooking dried lentils and legumes from scratch (as dried packet legumes are just about the cheapest nutrient and energy per dollar food there is out there). •Try making pumpkin soup with coconut milk, carnation/evaporated milk or reconstituted stock instead of cream. •Portion meat before freezing to save wastage when defrosted.

• Pull out the slow cooker and make soups, minestrones and casseroles. Based on tinned tomatoes or stocks, these are often inexpensive, healthy and easy to prepare in bulk. • Choose generic brands - it sounds obvious, doesn’t it? But often generic brands get a bad rap unnecessarily, as all food manufacturers have to follow the same protocols to provide safe food. • Ferment your food. Leftover cabbage and carrots make terrific ferments! • Keep skin on veggies and fruit (provided they are washed well) - as there are often extra nutrients and fibre close to the surface.
• Choose cheaper cuts of meat, this work particularly well in pies, stews, casseroles, curries and soups. • Choose frozen or tinned fish instead of fresh. • Make a ‘scraps’ container in the freezer for the hard bits of veggies you can’t use (such as carrot tops, celery leaves, bean ends) and transform them into a homemade stock in your home cooker. • If you have a pie maker, you can make small pies which can be frozen and used at a later date. • Prepare some bulk dishes for the freezer: casseroles, broths, pies, fritters and curries work well.
• Swap fresh squeezed lemon juice for bottled lemon concentrate. • Use leftover hot chooks (the carcass and scraps of chicken meat) to make a bone broth or chicken noodle soup. • Buy in bulk with friends. Bulk buying is cheaper overall but often requires a higher upfront payment. If this isn’t feasible, try splitting the bulk costs with friends or family. • Use a soda stream instead of buying bottle carbonated sodas. • Make a frittata with eggs and leftover veggies (or frozen spinach - defrosted with a little cheese...yum!)

New takeaway menu on its way! As we all adapt to new ways of doing business, one winning outcome for locals is the increase in delicious takeaway menu options. Cassie Orreal, from Beerwah Hotel, said the response from customers for their takeaways had been great since they launched the menu on March 23, and now their team are busy putting together ideas for an exciting new winter menu based on customer feedback. “Firstly, we really want to thank our customers who are continuing to support us during this time, we’ve have brilliant feedback and we are loving the
suggestions that are being posted online for our new menu which we are hoping to launch early May,” said Cassie. With the cooler temperatures just around the corner, Cassie said that more ‘winter warmers’ would be added such as roasts and seasonal vegies, but top sellers like their chicken parmi and burgers would definitely be included. “Our parmis popularity has gone through the roof since launching the takeaway service, and our customers are loving our three famous topper options - Hawaiian, French and Mexican,” said Cassie. “Our $15 burgers and chips have also
been super popular too, with great feedback about our Aussie, steak and crumbed Mahi Mahi burger.” With the Beerwah Hotel team busy finalising their new customer built takeaway menu, Cassie said the team have really appreciated the variety of suggestions on their Facebook page. Popular suggestions have included crispy honey chicken salad, creamy garlic pumpkin lasagne, and more gluten free options. Currently, the takeaway menu is available seven days a week for lunch and dinner from 11am-2.30pm and 5pm-8.30pm, though times may vary when the new menu launches. A special Mothers’ Day menu is also being considered. Copies of the takeaway menu are available online and orders can be placed by calling 5494 0555. Congratulations on your online paper. While we are missing our afternoon cuppa and read (with crossword and sudoku) we still enjoy catching up with all the local news online. Our little cattle dog Banjo, however, misses her weekly ritual of going up the driveway to collect it. To that end, we have kept the last printed edition (for posterity), re-wrapped it and every so often allow her to continue her very important job of retrieving it from the top of our driveway. Hinterland Families Rainbow joy brightens up the days By Sonia Clark Rebecca Morgan from Peachester recently sent GC&M News a beautiful photo of a gorgeous rainbow inspired artwork that she and her children had created as part of the global Rainbow Trail movement. Seeking to lift people’s spirit during the current challenging times, people are sharing their vibrant creations online, in windows and on pavements, to bring colourful joy to the community around them. Similar to the global ‘bear hunt’ initiative where people place and post pictures of teddy bears seen in windows or ‘out and about’. The international Rainbow Trail movement started online in late March, with Facebook group members invited to create and share rainbow pictures for children to find on their walks – especially during a time of social isolation.

Jamboree during isolation Contributed by Karli Pearson Every year in October, Scouts from across the globe join together for JOTA and JOTI (Jamboree on the Air and Jamboree on the Internet) but with so many Scouts around the world in lockdown and various forms of social isolation, the World Organisation of the Scout Movement decided to hold JOTI: Jamboree on the Internet, Special Edition this month. From April 3-5, Scouts from Landsborough Scout Group connected with Scouts from all over the globe.

There were games, information sessions and talent shows, but the best bit by far was chatting to real Scouts in real time in a safe environment. Cub Scout Sarah spoke to Scouts from Argentina, America, Indonesia and Pakistan, but the highlight was talking to Ale from Italy, who had been in lockdown for almost four weeks. It was eye opening to realise that Ale had spent most of that time alone and that there had been no opportunities for a quick trip to anywhere but the nearest shop.

Health &Wellbeing BreastScreen Queensland screening suspension BreastScreen Queensland were planning to run their regular clinic in Maleny at the end of April, however the state-wide service has temporarily suspended routine breast screening due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This was a difficult but necessary decision to safeguard the health of our clients, staff, and community. All women with appointments will be notified directly, and clients will be contacted to reschedule appointments as soon as possible. If you have recently had a breast screen, you will receive your results as normal, through the post or your online account and BreastScreen Queensland remains open for those women who have been asked to return for additional tests. Women are encouraged to remain aware of the normal look and feel of their breasts and if you notice any changes please contact your doctor immediately, do not wait until your next breast screen. Breast changes to look out for include: • a new lump or lumpiness, especially if it's only in one breast • a change in the size and shape of your breast
• a change to the nipple, such as crusting, an ulcer, redness or the nipple pulled in • a discharge from your nipple that happens without squeezing the nipple • a change in the skin of the breast such as redness or dimpling or puckered skin • a pain that doesn't go away This is a rapidly changing situation and BreastScreen Queensland will keep the community updated via their website www.breastscreen.qld.gov.au when breast screening services will be available again. It is important to note that the closure is not due to a suspected or confirmed case of COVID-19 at any of our clinics.
The closure is to assist in reducing the risk of COVID-19 spread in the community. It will also help to free up capacity in the health care system by making clinicians available to support and respond to COVID-19.

Online physio appointments available For physiotherapy patients who are elderly, immune system compromised or just a bit concerned about COVID-19, online teleappointments may be available. Practice manager at Beerwah Active Physio, Nicky Webb, said that with their heightened level of awareness and COVID-19 hygiene practices in place, the clinic is still seeing many patients. However, for those that have underlying health issues or may be worried about the risk of contracting COVID-19, the practice physio’s may be able to offer online teleappointments, assessed on a case by case basis. “Depending on what treatment is required, there may be the option that patients can conduct their appointment with a physio or exercise physiologist ‘face to face’ over the internet, though appointments will require the patient being able to access the right technology,” said Nicky. Clinic exercise physiologist, Andrew Martin, explained that conducting telehealth appointments was easily accessible with the use of online device cameras on patients’ phone or computer and access to the internet.

“Basically we can show patient’s the exercises to do and then watch to see if they do them correctly, offering advice or suggestions for improvement if required – very similar to what they would do if they came into the clinic. We are also looking into offering online group classes,” said Andrew. Local residents are being urged to book their influenza vaccination during April. Dr Keat Choong, Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service (SCHHS) Clinical Director of Infectious Disease said scheduling an influenza vaccination this year amidst the COVID-19 pandemic is critical while it won't combat COVID-19, but it will help to reduce the severity and spread of influenza. “It is also important as the COVID-19 pandemic evolves that we avoid as many people as possible presenting to our GPs and hospitals with seasonal flu. “We need to ensure we have as much capacity as possible to look after those who need to be isolated and supported if they have a serious case of COVID-19.” Dr Choong said it is important to be prepared, with vaccination one of the best ways to protect from influenza. Vaccination is free from GPs for people at higher risk of severe outcomes, including children aged six months to five years, people aged 65 years and older, pregnant women, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people from six months, and people with certain chronic conditions including diabetes and chronic respiratory and cardiac conditions.

In the Garden Ask Brownie Help – my new Jacaranda tree is dying I planted a large Jacaranda tree into the front garden about Christmas time and it was doing wonderfully, but I took a look at Easter and all the leaves had gone brown and died. It was in a bag about 50 litres in size and the tree was over 2m tall. I planted it in a big hole into the existing soil, which is a little compacted and has some clay, but backfilled with new garden soil. I watered the plant in really well and then every other day for two weeks. If I scrape the bark, there is still green to be seen, so at least it’s not totally dead … yet. The tree cost me a fair amount, so what could I have done wrong and what can I do to save it now? Tania from Glenview Well Tania, from what you’ve said, you’ve done pretty well with the planting of the tree. The basic rules when planting large tree stock are:
• Make the hole at least twice as wide as the container it comes in. This way, the plant roots have space to grow out of the potted medium and into nicely tilled soil with no other root competition. The exercise in digging the hole is also a good cardio workout. If it’s clay soil, don’t cut the edges of the hole with smooth sides. The new tree roots as they grow out, could end up hitting the smooth clay surface and growing around in a circle instead of outwards. Also, if it’s clay soil, throw a few handfuls of gypsum into the hole to help break up the clay later. • Carefully take the tree out of the bag or pot. This is easier with a bag, as it can be cut away from the root ball. If it’s in a big pot, you will have to carefully ease the pot off the root ball – this is best done by two people. Unless the root ball is really root-bound, try to disturb the roots as little as you can. • If the soil is a little less than perfect, back fill with a mix of the natural soil and good quality garden soil. You can also add some compost or coconut coir (the compressed stuff, but you’ll need to soak and loosen it first) and some fertiliser appropriate for the type of plant (tip, if you’re planting a native, don’t use a general fertiliser, use one designed for native plants). • Press the soil down firmly – I like to lightly stamp down with my size 9 Blundstones – to compact the soil
slightly and eliminate any large air spaces. Air spaces will dry out and do the same to roots in the soil. • Water well to eliminate the air from the soil and mulch around the tree to keep the moisture in and the digging pests out (like bandicoots, dogs, brush turkeys, chooks, etc), as they’ll just potentially damage the roots. Then water well once a week for a month – longer if it’s a really hot and dry weather spell. • Put in sturdy timber stakes around the tree – well away from the roots – and use long fabric strips to tie the tree to the stakes so that the tree isn’t buffeted by windy weather (which could damage the roots or even blow it over). This also keeps the tree growing nice and straight for the first part of its new life. Remembering back, I think what’s happened to your Jacaranda is that we had a lot of rain in the new year and I think that you may have created a bit of a well by digging down into the clay soil. This well most likely filled up with water for extended periods and waterlogged the soil around the root ball. This has the effect of excluding air for a long period, and tree roots need the oxygen in the soil air to ‘breathe’. The good sign is that it has green tissue just under the bark, meaning that it should resprout new growth. Although the form of the tree will be compromised by having to regrow, the Jacaranda is a very forgiving tree, and so it will look fine after a few years. But, if possible - and in case we get an extended wet spell again - carefully dig a drainage channel from the edge of the hole you planted the tree into out into the garden bed, to try and drain away any excessive water that collects in the hole. And maybe spread a half a dozen big handfuls of gypsum around the outside of the hole you dig so that the existing clay soil may open up and improve the drainage.

Rosemary
One of the never-fail herbs to grow in the garden is rosemary. Great with a lamb roast, on a potato pizza or to infuse in oil… you can’t go wrong growing a bush of rosemary in your backyard. All you need to remember is that they are plants of Mediterranean origin, so they
prefer free draining soil and don’t like to be kept continually moist; they prefer full sun; and they do best if regularly pruned by taking bits off to use in the kitchen. There’s not much more to know about growing rosemary. They do just as well in a large pot as in the ground. And you can grow them from a cutting or from a purchased potted specimen. There are a few different varieties – one interesting one being a prostrate trailing type, which will spill down over the edges of a large pot. It is a perennial, so will grow for many years, even if neglected. Rosemary has been used for its purported medicinal properties since ancient times. Greek scholars wore rosemary in their hair as they believed it strengthened their memory to help them in their studies. It was mentioned by Shakespeare in Hamlet, where Ophelia says "There's rosemary, that's for remembrance; pray you, love, remember;"… but Ophelia was insane at the time, so hers is probably not a reliable recommendation. That association with memory, remembrance and commemoration has
continued on through to modern times, where rosemary worn on ANZAC Day, as well as Remembrance Day, holds a particularly powerful significance for Australians. This tradition is strengthened by the fact that rosemary grew wild over the hills of the Gallipoli Peninsula. If you already have some growing in your garden remember to take a cutting and wear it on ANZAC Day this Saturday. If you haven’t planted your own rosemary make sure you do so you can wear it as a mark of respect at an ANZAC Day service in 2021, for those who sacrificed their lives in their country's name. While he is on a tour of Jerusalem, a high profile American politician suffers a heart attack and dies. The undertaker tells the American diplomats accompanying him, "You can have him shipped home for $50,000 or you can bury him here, in the Holy Land, for just $100." The American diplomats go into a corner to discuss for a few minutes. They return with their answer to the undertaker and tell him they want the politician shipped home. The undertaker is puzzled and asks, "Why would you spend $50,000 to ship him home, when it would be wonderful to be buried here and you would spend only $100?" Late one night a man is driving down the road, speeding quite a bit. A cop notices how fast he is going and pulls him over. The cop says to the man, “Are you aware of how fast you were going?” The man replies, “Yes I am. I’m trying to escape a robbery I got involved in.” The cop gives him a sceptical look and says, “Were you the one being robbed?” The man casually replies, “No, I committed the robbery.” The cop looks shocked that the man admitted this. “So you’re telling me you were speeding...AND committed a robbery?” “Yes,” the man calmly says. “I have the loot in the back.” The cop begins to get angry. “Sir, I’m afraid you have to come with me.” The cop reaches in the window to subdue the man. “Don’t do that!” the man yells fearfully. “I’m scared you will find the gun in my glove compartment!” The cop pulls his hand out. “Wait here,” he says.
The cop calls for backup. Soon cops, cars, and helicopters are flooding the area. The man is cuffed quickly and taken towards a car. However, before he gets in, a cop walks up to him and says, while gesturing to the cop that pulled him over, “Sir, this officer informed us that you had committed a robbery, had stolen loot in the trunk of your car, and had a loaded gun in your glove compartment. However, we found none of these things in your car.” The man replies, “Yeah, and I bet that liar said I was speeding too!”
