his week we seem to be focusing on quite a few milestones, with the Tibro Netball club celebrating 25 years being the big one! When we were putting the story together, it got me thinking about how many local families must have been involved in some way over the years. And if you added into that equation, how many locals have been involved in each of the clubs that have been based there over the years – the number must be huge. So recently when I was approached by one of the sports club committee members to see if GCNews would be interested in running a monthly column about the club’s history I said yes. It is almost 100 years since the first steps were taken to establish the Glasshouse Mountains Recreation and Showgrounds Reserve, so for those interested, we will be bringing you regular updates starting in June. Tibro's notch up 25 years Tibro’s Netball Club of Glass House Mountains recently marked the club’s 25 year milestone with a number of activities including some fun and games for the junior members and a more upmarket dinner on the night for the not so junior members. The junior members gathered at the courts on Saturday morning to kick start the anniversary celebrations. After the obligatory photographs were taken with the celebration cake, the girls were free to enjoy some fun and games. They competed in three legged races, tossed eggs at one another, played ball games and challenged the coaches and managers to a tug-of-war competition. As night fell, the function room at the sportsclub was all decked out in the club’s green and black colours and a dash of silver for the occasion. Current club president Sam Douglas said it was great to be able to mark the significant milestone for the club and to see the number of people from the community who came along to support our special event, she said. The evening’s dinner was a time to reminisce and catch up with old and new friends. Photos from the beginning to the present were displayed on a timeline wall, and a slideshow helped everyone relive past events.

Our very first uniform, the colours that were in at the time, mint green and white, was modelled by Peyton, she said. This was followed by the uniform changes of style and colour throughout the years in the senior and juniors modelled by Emily, Jayahh, Emily, Brandi, Eloise and Bree. And we cannot forget the umpire uniforms worn by Tegen and Hannah. After an enjoyable meal, the celebration cake was cut, and lots of dancing followed. “I would like to thank everyone that contributed in making this event happen, it was a job well done,” Sam said. The state’s newest Senator travelled to the Sunshine Coast hinterland at the weekend where he met with local milk producers during a tour of Maleny Cheese. The Senator heard from dairy farmers who were supplying the company with local milk for a price above what was being offered by the biggest processors. Maleny Cheese owner Markus Bucher said his business plan focussed on ensuring local farmers remained viable so that supply would be consistent. He said the business currently purchased more than one million litres of locally produced milk each year from four family farms. The company’s boutique range of yoghurts and cheeses are sold at retail outlets and farmer’s markets across South East Queensland. Mr Bucher said he had also purchased a nearby 380-head dairy farm last month to ensure the company was able to provide consistent local product into the future. “Our business started just after deregulation and a lot of local milk producers were struggling with the prices being paid by the big, multi-national processors,” he said.

We need to look at ways to replicate the success of this local business model for other regions and other industries.”

Member for Glass House, Andrew Powell held his annual ceremony and afternoon tea to coincide with the 25th Anniversary of National Volunteers Week to celebrate our community volunteers and to thank the many hard working people in his community. By Lea Parkes Not all of us are going to make it onto My Kitchen Rules or Master Chef, but if you like the idea of entering a cooking competition closer to home, why not consider entering the Maleny Show on May 30 and 31? You can follow Landsborough local Monica Smith's example entering her cooking since the 1950’s, with plenty of success. The cookery competition includes 23 categories just for baking, including traditional items such as pikelets, jam drops, Anzac biscuits, cupcakes, and the more unusual pumpkin fruit cake and a rainbow cake. There are also home-made bread classes, cake decorating, sweets and preserves, along with a junior category. Member for Caloundra Mark McArdle has congratulated the Beerwah and District Kindergarten’s new playground and refurbished facilities during the official opening at the weekend. Joint Federal and State Government funding under the Renovation and Refurbishment Program in 2013 of $142,105.00 enabled the popular kindy to undertake three projects including; interior refurbishment and the removal of asbestos flooring, renovation of the front entrance and renovation of the children’s play area. Mr McArdle said the new facilities were a great boost to the local students and community. “It is great to see these new areas first-hand and how much joy they will bring to our littlest locals,” Mr McArdle said. “Kindergartens are much more than bricks and mortar, they represent the heart of a community and the Beerwah Kindy should be recognised for their hard work in fundraising to upgrade these facilities.” The renovations included a completely revamped outdoor playground area including new shade sails, a digging pit, flower and veggie patches, new slippery slide, new cubby house, storage shed, timber decking and turf, as well as a new front entrance and mingling and drop-off area and the removal of asbestos flooring and wall materials within the building, plus minor internal renovations.

Goodbye to Graeme Lean and welcome Tom Duggan By Sonia Clark Long term local vet, Graeme Lean has moved on to a new chapter of his life by retiring from the practice that carried his name for the past 35 years. While it is sad to say goodbye to the Landsborough and Glass House Vet Surgeries where Graeme has built up an enduring legacy, he is pleased to welcome the new owners of the business, Tom and Sam Duggan. Graeme’s journey as a vet over the last 41 years began with opening his first practice at Golden Beach in the 1970’s, but seeking a more rural lifestyle he and his wife Marilyn decided to buy a house at Landsborough. Although he had no practice in town at the time, upon hearing that he was a vet, people would bring their animals to him at home, subsequently a decision was made to open a surgery in Landsborough. Being a vet was not Graeme’s first choice of profession, as a teenager he wanted to be a fighter pilot and even got accepted into the air force, but as he was too tall to fly fighter planes he looked to another career option. He had enjoyed zoology at high school and it was while watching a vet doing a post mortem on a chicken, and being fascinated by the autopsy process, Graeme found his vocation. A career as a vet combined his analytical skills with his concern for animals. Winning a scholarship to do veterinary science at UQ (University Of Queensland), Graeme completed the five year degree and then worked his first job as a vet at the Cooroy Vet Surgery. Following graduation he worked as a locum in Taree for four months before moving to Canada for five years. It was here that he met and married Marilyn. Moving back to Landsborough in 1979, Graeme remembers “it had a real small town feel and I was the new bloke in town, now I’m the old bloke in town.” When it came time to sell the practice, Graeme was adamant that he didn’t want to sell to corporate interests and that he “preferred someone who dealt with people on a personal basis.” With this in mind, he was very particular to whom he sold the business. Graeme has known Tom personally for 28 years and no doubt it will be reassuring for clients to know that Tom has worked successfully in the area for the last 22 years. In parting, Graeme wanted everyone to know that “he has felt extremely honoured of how the community has accepted them and that he is leaving the practice with mixed feelings.”

Tom Duggan and Graeme Lean It was more than a business - more part of a big family and that over the years my clients have been just fantastic, he said. While Graeme will still assist Tom with the occasional locum, he looks forward to pursuing his passions for flying, photography, hiking and playing classical guitar. He also looks forward to a grey nomad life with Marilyn and enjoying time with his family, both here and overseas. Grandchild number seven is due in July. The new Vet, Tom Duggan also graduated from UQ with a degree in veterinary science in 1985 and has lived and worked throughout the Hinterland and Woodford since 1990. Originally living in Beerwah where Tom met and married Sam (who people may know from her years working at the Landsborough and Maleny Chemists), they then moved to Woodford for 10 years and then worked at, then owned a practice at Maleny for 12 years. Previously Tom had worked in New Zealand and the UK and has an interest in equine muscle therapy though he likes to work with all size animals. Tom currently lives in Maleny with Sam, their two sons Conor and Riley and an assortment of dogs, cats, horses, some cows and a bunch of chooks. Tom hopes to continue the same level of service, and that the practice will continue to run as a family business with Tom and Sam, along with the team of additional vets and reception staff. “Although the practice will have new management, it will still maintain the same level of country service and people can still come in for a chat,” he said. Future plans include expanding the practice hours along with open days at both surgeries. However the big news is that the clinic is relocating in the next few months to a new site on Caloundra Street Landsborough in what promises to be a purpose built veterinary hospital with state of the art facilities.

Brave local raises awareness for Forgotten Cancers Project By Sonia Clark This time last year Mooloolah local Allison McMaster was jogging along Connection Road preparing for the Caloundra Foreshore Fun Run. The personal trainer, wife and mother was a fit and healthy 47-year-old who was about to qualify as an enrolled nurse. Her work prospects were good, she and her husband of 18 years were building their dream home and life was busy and full. Returning home that day she discovered blood in her urine and her life as she knew it was turned upside down. The first doctor diagnosed a Urinary Tract Infection (UTI), however she pushed for a second opinion that revealed a tumour. In August last year, Allison had her kidney removed with an 8cm tumour. She was diagnosed with Stage 2 CDC (Collecting duct carcinoma) a rare and aggressive type of cancer and commenced chemotherapy from October until January. Allison was then given the all clear but her relief was cut short when she discovered a lump in her groin in March of this year.

Devastatingly, a biopsy revealed stage 4 cancer and the prognosis of this rare type of cancer is poor. Allison has started radiation therapy, however last month, she was told she has between three - 12 months to live. During this harrowing journey, Allison found information about her cancer very hard to find. Research into it has been limited and even doctors knew very little. During this time, she came across the Forgotten Cancers Project which is an initiative that seeks to study and understand the causes of less common cancers. Although Allison’s time may be limited, she is committed to raising awareness about this project. The project seeks volunteers who are aged over 18 and have been diagnosed with a less common form of cancer to answer questionnaires and provide saliva samples. With the permission of participants, relatives are also invited to take part in the project to provide comparison information. Along with trying to remain positive and healthy, Allison is determined to bravely fight on - she has set family milestones to look towards to inspire her positive outlook; such as her 20th wedding anniversary and her son Mathew’s 18th birthday (he is currently 14). This year Allison will walk along side a team of locals ladies in the Caloundra Foreshore event on June 22 proudly wearing the Forgotten Cancers t-shirts. Nine of Queensland’s most outstanding Apprentices, Trainees and School-based Trainees, as well as two dedicated host companies, were presented with awards for their hard work and dedication to their recent trades and training MIGAS Queensland / WA State Awards Night. Two of these awards went to our local area, The MIGAS Outstanding Achievement for an Apprentice went to Travis Barker, who is completing his Cert III in Plumbing at Woodlands Enterprises. The award to the Large Host Employer of the Year was Woodlands based at Beerwah. The annual event recognises the qualities of leadership, perseverance and outstanding performance by MIGAS Apprentices, Trainees and School-based Trainees, as well as acknowledging those businesses who commit their time to training the next generation of tradespeople. Why are YOU paying SO MUCH for electricity?

Since 2009 the demand for electricity has been falling EACH YEAR, according to researcher Jess Hill. Prior to 2009, the absolute opposite was the effect, demand was growing annually.

Remember “Kevin 07”?

Our Prime Minister Kevin Rudd was swept into power and he was a committed believer in climate change – John Howard was not. What did John Howard amazingly miss? (amazing, because he was the best informed P.M. we had. He knew on every other issue, what the “vibes” were in the community). Even though it was Peter Costello’s budget (in May 2007) that raised the solar bonus from $4,000 to $8,000, there was no commitment by the Liberal Government to encourage solar installation. But Kevin 07 ran with it. Thousands of Australian house owners grabbed the idea – even people 90 plus years of age.

Why “Kevin 07”

With so many solar systems being installed across Australia – POWER CONSUMPTION began to fall and it has continued. But the energy companies have kept investing in infrastructure and you and I are being charged higher electricity costs so these infrastructure investments, that in the changing market, probably were not necessary.

Australian Electricity is expensive

The cost of producing electricity, now that the coal fired power stations are being recomissioned (because gas is too expensive) and coal is quite cheap, is very low – but our electricity prices are some of the HIGHEST IN THE WORLD.

Where does our money go?

Your electricity bill is distributed in the following way – the retailer keeps 20%, Energex keeps 20% for polluting the air with coal generated electricity, and Energex or whoever is the infrastructure provider keeps 50% to recover the costs of their OVER CAPITALISATION of infrastructure.

How’s this for an example?

A network distributor in NSW invested $30 million in a substation in Newcastle. This substation was not necessary – the demand for electricity was falling, not increasing and the $30 million was wasted because it was NOT CONNECTED to the grid.

That is just one project of an estimated 50%, YES 50% of the $45 billion invested in the grid throughout Australia, that was NOT NECESSARY to be invested. The worst part of this unnecessary investment, is that the companies KNEW DEMAND was falling, BUT, these companies EARNED THEIR INCOME by BUILDING infrastructure for the grid.

Look at this

The profit of these companies, according to ABS (Aust. Bureau of Statistics) before they began investing in grid INFRASTRUCTURE was $5.4 billion pretax profit. Two years into their spending spree – WHILST DEMAND IS FALLING, and 50% of their expenditure is UNNECESSARY, profit has increased by 67% to $9 billion. Guess What? In these 2 years YOUR electricity prices rose by 40%. It will take years for, we the consumers, to pay for this expenditure. We have exported so many jobs, so electricity demand in factories is dying. So with falling revenue, the power companies raise their prices, so more house holders install solar panels and battery storage. So the demand falls for electricity, so the price is raised by the power companies, so more people install solar and batteries, so the price of electricity increases.

The future outlook

Expect fierce price increases – probably 2 or 3 times a year – as the death spiral takes hold. Battery storage is the future. Charge your batteries AND supply your daytime household electricity. Then at night, use YOUR OWN POWER to run your house.

Community News Milestone celebration for Hudson

When Beerwah resident Hudson Newett celebrated his 90th birthday he had no less than three birthday cakes. The first one was at Glasshouse Country Anglican Church where his daughter Verity helped him cut the cake (see photo). Then he gathered with family and friends at The Getaway for luncheon and another cake. When he returned to Embracia, guess what - another cake and celebration. Hudson and his late wife Bunnie moved to Australia in 1987 from Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). They followed their son Simon, an agronomist who, with his family, was farming macadamia nuts at Peachester. Simon later joined the DPI where he is a researcher. Hudson has been a long-time supporter of Neighbourhood Watch and held office in the organisation, and is also a long and valued member of the Glasshouse Country Anglican congregation.

Deputy Fire Warden appointed for Peachester area

QFES Area Director for Sunshine Coast Rural Fire Service and Chief Fire Warden, Inspector Gary Seaman, recently announced the appointment of Mr John Gresham as the Deputy Fire Warden for the Peachester rural fire brigade area. Mr Bruce Page remains the Fire Warden for that area and is the first contact for permits. Mr Gresham is also Chairman of the Peachester Rural Fire Brigade. Mr Seaman reminds all residents throughout the Sunshine Coast area that, if they want to burn off vegetation, stacks, etc. exceeding two metres diameter or height, they must first obtain a Permit from the Fire Warden of their area. Application forms can be obtained from the area Warden. Wardens generally require a minimum of three days to assess the application and issue a permit. Facelift for Neighbourhood Centre

The Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre has seen a lot of people come through its doors over the years and it is time for the original church building to have a facelift. Neighbourhood Centre president, Colleen Clarke, said she has been pleased to see the refreshing difference made to the place. “Thanks to the Sunshine Coast Council, the Neighbourhood Centre building has been freshly painted outside and partly inside. New bins have been installed in the park and the floorboards in the building will be refurbished in June. “Volunteers are also in the process of cleaning the outdoor art installations and clearing space in the storage shed. It is nice to see how all of this is making the centre feel fresher and brighter,” Colleen said. The Neighbourhood Centre is 100% staffed by volunteers and is open Monday and Friday, 9.00am – 2.00pm, and Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, 9.00am – 12.00noon. Contributed by Jenny Morris From all reports I have received, the outing on May 7 to the Queensland Air Museum at Caloundra airport has been our best this year. Twenty five members, including six partners, enjoyed an entertaining and educational morning lasting two hours being well informed by Leon their guide for the morning. Interesting stories were told about the collection of planes at the Museum with the climax being the F111. Outside the hangars is the Caribou which was replaced by the Hercules. Both of these planes were workhorses for moving large loads for the army and emergency help to other countries. Anyone interested in joining the Glasshouse Country View Club can phone Margaret on 5435 2172 who will be pleased to supply further information about the club. For those who don’t know about the View Club, we are a ladies club and we have a luncheon once a month at the Glasshouse Sports Club and a monthly outing. We raise money for the Smith Family and are

meeting, where Lion’s president Rita Sanderson was delighted to present John Gresham, representing the Peachester Rural Fire Brigade, with a much-needed chainsaw. In thanking the Lions, John said the season ahead would probably be a busy one for the brigade, and the acquisition of a powerful chainsaw would assist them greatly, particularly when they had to clear fallen trees from fire breaks. The Lions were also pleased to induct two new members, Susan Kemp, and Bronwyn Bossley. Trevor Taylor representing the Rotary club congratulated the Lions Club on its steady growth. The Beerwah area benefits greatly from having two active service clubs, he added.

Forty years ago the buildings at church on the Rise were owned by the Baptist Church. They had out dated out-houses for toilets and needed to get with the times and put in modern toilets that flushed! Now 40 years later, Church on the Rise needed to provide modern rest rooms with not only flushing toilets but a baby change room, shower, disabled facilities and a new spacious foyer. Pastor Rod Jobe said that the previous front entrance did not say welcome to people and the facilities did not cater for families in a growing community. Most of the work has been done voluntarily by church members and friends. The extension has increased the seating size of the auditorium and allows for more flexibility during services. It has been a three year journey for the church to do the work and raise the funds. Pastor Jobe said that the church building has been built by the people for the people of the community. The churches slogan is ‘Loving God, Loving People, Loving Life!’ Everyone is invited to attend the Special Opening on Sunday, May 25 at 9.00am. Visitor Information Centre celebrates five years An afternoon tea was held recently at the Glass House Visitor Information Centre, to celebrate Volunteers Week. Of the 20 Ambassadors that attended, three of them celebrated their five year anniversary (coinciding with the time the centre has been open) and two of them celebrated their 12th anniversary.

Community group receive funds Member for Glass House, Andrew Powell MP, said the latest funding round of the Caring for our Community Program would make a significant difference in the Glass House electorate. “In this area, four grants up to $5,000.00 each are being provided to help community groups purchase much-needed equipment like computers, camping gear, white goods, musical instruments or furniture. “These grants provide a fantastic opportunity to improve local community facilities and upgrade resources. “Whether it’s for a printer, computer, a fridge or microwave, the cost of equipment or infrastructure mounts up quickly for community groups and a small boost like this can go a long way,” he said. The two grant recent recipients from Glasshouse Country were Peachester History Committee, $4,740.00, and Glasshouse Districts Cricket Club, $3,824.00. 12

Under 5’s Story time

Reaching their full potential BADYACC support the youth of the Beerwah and surrounding districts. They’re on Roberts Road near the Skate Park, and have some new and innovative programs running to support the young people from the local areas. Some of these programs are aimed at skilling young people to stay connected to school and others help those that have left school prepare for their future through Vocational training. Some of these programs are pilot programs and are proving quite successful in engaging young people, teaching them how to handle life at school as well as tackling school work in a positive environment that enriches their learning experiences. Beerwah and District Youth and Community Centre (BADYACC) are currently running the PriME program. The aim of PriME is to re-engage Year 5, 6, and 7 school children with school, their family and their community. This is an early intervention program which builds resilience, self esteem and current strengths. The young people engaged in the program participate in literacy and numeracy activities, yoga and boxing. This teaches self-management which provides a calmer approach to school work

and peers. Bullying, self confidence, mindfulness and behaviour workshops are also conducted to help the young people better manage their choices and how they react to situations. Some of the activities that the young people are involved in are group breakfasts, art therapy, music, gardening, learning decision making skills, how to communicate effectively, problem solving techniques, teamwork, English and Maths. They are in week four of our pilot and the young people are enjoying the activities and relating to each other in a positive and friendly way. They enjoy the activities and some of the techniques they are learning. There is still a long way to go, but the results are speaking for themselves.

Storytelling sessions for babies, toddlers, underfives and parents occurs each week, at the Beerwah Library on Tuesday from 10.30am – 11.00am and at Maleny Library on Thursday, from 9.30am – 10.00am and is free! Stories, rhymes, songs and purposeful play - to encourage language and listening skills, promote attention and curiosity. And if you have an even younger member of the family that you would like to take along regularly to the library – you might want to check out their Baby Rhyme Time held Thursdays from 10.30am – 11.00am at the Beerwah Library and at Maleny Library on Friday from 9.30am – 10.00am. The sessions include songs, stories and finger plays to promote early literacy for infants up to two years of age.

Top 5 Tips for being a Great Dad!

By Mike Turner (bass player) Recently we ran an email survey of a range of local dads asking what they would say would be their ‘5 Top Tips for Being a Great Dad!’ The results came in and we want to share the top five responses with you. 1. Having time to engage with your kids (23%) 2. Creating fun with your kids (11%) 3. Being ‘there’ and present in your kid’s lives (7%) 4. Love and honour your kids’ mum (7%) 5. Be able to say sorry (7%) This was really cool getting this feedback. The remaining 45% of responses were really great too. Obviously this is not a truly scientific survey but it gives you an idea of what dads are thinking. Being a dad comes with its challenges for sure, but it also brings immense rewards. To illustrate I want to tell you some stories about my three sons. My eldest is a drummer and this year I was able to play snare drum alongside him at his school ANZAC parade. It was so great to look across at my son and share that moment with him. My middle boy is very ‘laid back’ and so doesn’t draw as much attention to himself as his brothers – but this year I have been able to spend some more time with him and do drawing and just listen to him talk to me. I love seeing his cheeky sense of humour come out. My youngest is getting into skateboarding and we recently starting going skating together. I was bragging about it afterwards for days to family, workmates and friends etc. So as much as the responsibility and effort that goes into being a great dad is difficult sometimes, it is so totally worth it, plus we are allowed to enjoy being a dad! (You notice that number two on the list above is ‘creating fun with your kids’.) A breach of contract

I did as you said Mal Brough and waited for the Budget outcomes. I have finished reading the Budget papers and draw the conclusion that this Abbott Government got elected on a platform of deceit. We (and there is a lot of us) looked seriously at what was on offer prior to the last election and found the proposals and promises put forth by Abbott and Hockey were sound and responsible. How wrong can you be? We thought that Labor through the Gillard lies was not a viable or trustworthy alternative. Politicians should be held accountable at law for their broken promises. It is like they put an offer (promises) to the general electorate and the electorate accepted those offers and voted them in. A breach of contract in the highest order. This Budget hits hard at the disadvantaged and aged with little or no remorse for such draconian measures. One would think that repeated Liberal Governments have a ‘thing’ about the aged. This budget is Criminal neglect of the disadvantaged and aged. Amongst others there is a little gem hidden in the Budget papers ‘the exclusion of pathology and diagnostic imaging services for general and concessional patients from bulk billing’ which will hit the aged pensioner extremely hard as well as the co-payments (tax) for Medicare. Where are they coming from?

Over the last two years I - and others in the local community - have noticed a significant increase in feral / wild dogs in the area of Hardwood Road at Landsborough. It is acknowledged that we have a fox and dingo population in this area, however I have never seen them in the same numbers that I am now seeing them. A number of other locals have noticed an increase in the number of utes with dogs (in wire cages) travelling down Hardwood Road then turning into the Forestry service road. Some hours later these same utes would be observed returning from the forestry without the dogs (or fewer dogs) in the back. We aren't sure but suspect that there may be dog fighting activities on the weekend in the forestry and the ‘loser’ dogs are simply released to live or die in the forest. We understand (rumour perhaps) that the council / forestry has installed some cameras along forestry road in an effort to catch people who have been illegally dumping in the area of Mellum Creek. If these cameras are really in place, it may be that the utes are coming into the forestry via a different route, or not at all. In the last few weeks, feral dogs are coming closer and closer to my home and I am increasingly concerned about the danger associated with pack animals roaming in this area and the danger they pose to people, pets and small children. I have made the SC Council aware of my concerns and I believe that the RSPCA has been made aware of this situation. If you observe any fox, dingo or wild dogs in your area you really need to report the sighting to council. Name supplied Landsborough 16

Re: Fair go

It’s about time we the residents of Coonowrin Road get together as a united front to present our concerns to the politicians who don’t seem to be representing us. The truck drivers seem to have no regard for us residents, or the students at the primary school and our township. We have had enough as they continue to use their jake brakes and damaged exhaust systems in the township and on Coonowrin Road, some drivers don’t even stop at the stop sign at Steve Irwin Way. The dust from these trucks is also a problem, especially the trucks that are not covering their loads. The bridge over the railway line was constructed in 1969 - is there a weight limit on it? When was it last inspected as a maintenance issue? We are sick of these trucks using Coonowrin Road as a race track. All we would like is drivers to abide by the speed limits which are clearly marked and reduce their noise by doing some maintenance on their exhaust systems and load covers. Our elected representatives don’t seem to care, maybe they would if we took our concerns to ‘A Current Affair’. R. You need to take a really good look at the agedemographic of the voters you are supposed to be representing. My family has worked and improved the level of education of each generation of us since they came to this country. My parents gave me a good education and I later worked to pay for more extensive degrees and qualifications. I have worked and/or studied since I was five-years-old. Unfortunately for me I have contracted a very debilitating illness which has left me currently unable to work and which has had a profound effect on my savings and super. Without medical treatment it is unlikely I will ever recover sufficiently to bring my skills, qualifications and 40-odd years experience back into the workforce (and, of course, pay more taxes!) I’m not special. I’m not unusual. There are hundreds of me out here. And we vote. Please don’t insult us by spruiking your new hospital. I am not going to be able to afford the petrol for the (average) three medical treatments per month that I have to attend – frequently more. I will not be able to afford the doctor’s visits co-payments. I will not be able to afford the more expensive medication costs. Your flash new hospital - the only way I’ll get there will be by ambulance after I have collapsed. Oh, of course, the ambulance costs are supported by the State Government! Silly me! Budget update The Budget handed down on May 13 made difficult but necessary choices and is the first step to restoring Australia’s economy. While the budget was tough I wanted to share with you the key points that will benefit the Sunshine Coast and residents of Fisher. • Introduction of Trade Support Loans of up to $20,000 over a four year apprenticeship will help lift apprenticeship completion rates, build Australia’s skilled workforce and strengthen the economy. • Establishment of the Restart Program where employers who hire an eligible mature-aged job seeker (aged 50+), on a full-time basis, will be paid a subsidy of $10,000. • Establishment of the Medical Research Fund. This coincides with the construction of our new Sunshine Coast University Hospital and provides significant opportunity for the Sunshine Coast to become a health hub. • Commitment to significant investments in Sunshine Coast roads including Bruce Highway upgrades and additional money for the Roads to Recovery Program where local government can access funding for local roads.

Beerwah High’s ARTIE Program launch I had the pleasure of attending the Term 2 launch of the ARTIE (Achieving Results through Indigenous Education) Program at Beerwah State High School on May 2. The ARTIE Program is supported by the Federal Government and provides Indigenous students attending selected Queensland schools the opportunity to participate in a program that encourages and rewards improvements in school attendance, behaviour, academic achievement and effort. The fantastic FOGS (Former Origin Greats) organisation works with participating schools to deliver the program and it was encouraging to see the Indigenous students of Beerwah High engaged in the program and being supported by fantastic staff. Community and volunteer groups in Glass House will share in more than $1.5 million to help them purchase essential items and equipment, delivering on the Queensland Government’s election promise to revitalise frontline services. Recipients in Glass House include Delaneys Creek Rural Fire Brigade who received $4.700.00, Peachester History Committee $4,740.00, Palmwoods Memorial Hall $4,972.00 and Glasshouse District Cricket Club $3,824.00. These grants will go a long way to help community groups purchase much-needed equipment like computers, camping gear, white goods, musical instruments or furniture. 2014 Glass House Volunteer Awards I was honoured to once again hold the Glass House Volunteer Awards recently at the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club. The awards, which are held in conjunction with National Volunteers Week, celebrate those in our community who give of their time to others. I was joined by the Minister for Communities, Child Safety and Disability Services, Hon Tracy Davis MP, to thank all of the wonderful volunteers nominated by community groups throughout Glass House. Peachester BBQ Last month I had the pleasure of hosting a barbecue with Peachester residents at the Peachester Hall. Many residents came along to enjoy a sausage sizzle and a chat. Following the barbecue I held a Q&A session with great questions on many issues. We’ve all heard about the proposed development sites at Halls Creek and Beerwah East, but do we know what they look like and where they’re situated? Recently the Member for Glass House and Environment Minister Andrew Powell and I took a group of people from various community organisations including Sunshine Coast Environment Council, UDIA, Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce, Wildlife Preservation Society of Queensland and Residents Association South Sunshine Coast and inspected both sites. Due to space restrictions, I’m sorry I could not invite hundreds of people directly onto the site. Caloundra South developer Stockland were also on hand to talk about their vision for the proposed Halls Creek site, and HQ Plantations, Queensland’s largest plantation timber company, discussed their plantation operations that currently exist out of the proposed Beerwah East site. This was part of the State Government’s commitment to consult with key stakeholders and report feedback directly to the Deputy Premier Jeff Seeney. This really was step one of the communication consultation phase, to give people an idea of what both sites look like and so they know what we are talking about. The Beerwah East site is largely made up of forestry plantation and the Halls Creek site is largely cleared and is currently being used for cattle grazing. Beerwah Kindy Can you imagine working in the same job for nearly 20 years? It’s something that is not as common these days but one that’s true to heart at Beerwah and District Kindergarten. At their recent celebration of their refurbished facilities I was delighted to discover Michelle Kramer (who recently left) was a team leader for more than 18 years and their current director Katie Piva has been there for more than 22 years. What a remarkable achievement and a great environment for our littlest locals to be part of. They’re quite proud to show off their new facilities, including a revamped outdoor playground area and new front entrance thanks to State and Federal funding of $142,105 and their own fundraising efforts. Living Photography Corner with the U3A Grafx Group Contributed by Margaret Thompson Over recent months, U3A Beerwah Grafx Group joined forces with Glasshouse Country Orchid Society with impressive results. The supply of some beautiful orchids led to some creative photography, including video work, which was shown at the last meeting of the orchid group. The photos were taken using a controlled lighting situation, to allow the orchids to be shown to advantage. The Ecolodge is run very successfully by Rick and Robyn, and it is a beautiful example of a unique local business. Over 20 of our team recently visited the Ecolodge as part of our Ambassador program. This allows us to see the property first-hand and be informed for visitor enquiries. The Ecolodge has a variety of accommodation from a very romantic 125 year old Queensland country church, to the more modest hotel style room, and the most striking Victorian and Queenslander rail carriages with beautifully renovated interiors encouraging dreams of past travel. Our group was more than impressed with the style and look of the accommodation and the lovely grounds overlooking Mt Tibrogargan. It has been an interesting month in the centre with repairs to the roof after the recent heavy rain.

We are very fortunate to have Ian from Reflectshines as our professional cleaner, he went above and beyond the call of duty when he spotted the leaks by fixing up a make-do system to protect the wall hangings overnight. A big thank you for looking after the centre since day one. What’s in the centre this month? We have started to add a range of merchandise including Jaboticaba jam from the Ecolodge and local honey plus a small range of goods suitable for visitors to remember their visit to the Glass House Mountains. To compliment this extension of business, the centre will have more rationalised hours, opening 9.00am to 4.00pm seven days a week. Bees have been disappearing worldwide. Thanks to farming practices of today, bees have been struggling to find food for their colonies, and are simply dying out. Bees are flower feeders, getting protein from pollen and carbohydrates from nectar. While feeding, they do us a great service in the form of pollination. More than one third of the world’s food crops are pollinated by bees. In Australia, we have more than 1,500 species of native bees, many of which may be better pollinators than the introduced European bee. Stingless bees have been shown to be valuable pollinators of crops such as macadamias, mangos, watermelons and lychees. The disappearance of these valuable insects is due primarily to the increase of flowerless landscapes, monocultures and the use of pesticides. Artificial fertilisers have replaced the use of cover crops which are highly nutritious food plants for bees. Additionally, herbicides have been used to kill weeds, many of which are flowering plants. How can we help reverse this trend? Firstly, we can plant bee-friendly plants - ask your local nursery for a list of local plants to provide food and nesting sites for native bees. Avoid using pesticides; opt instead for preventative measures like improving soil health, rotating crops and companion planting. When necessary, use bug traps, hand picking, organic sprays, liquid seaweed, or milk. The benefits will extend to migrating butterflies, ground insects and birds. Visitors want higher tech scenic reserve

That’s the take home message for one of our most popular tourist destinations. A Sunshine Coast Council-commissioned survey on visitors’ experiences at the Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve revealed technology as one of the most sought after improvements. Division 5 Councillor Jenny McKay said 76% of surveyed visitors wanted more futuristic ways of accessing information about the reserve’s flora and fauna. “Mobile apps, audio tours and interactive technologies were among the most requested upgrades to the Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve experience,” she said. “Visitors are clearly keen to have information about the animals, plants and history of the reserve available on their smart phones and tablets while they’re here. “This is terrific feedback for council as we move forward with designs for the building renewal project at the Mary Cairncross Reserve.” Sunshine Coast University undertook the three week survey. Dr Christian Jones from the University said it outlined a number of key areas for improvement. “Thirty-seven percent of people surveyed requested improvement, updating or redesign of the reserve’s education centre and 19% wanted more for children to see and do in the centre,” he said. “About one-third of respondents said they would like more general information available about the reserve. “The survey also revealed that visitors believe the reserve’s café is disconnected from the education centre and should integrate more with the reserve and communicate more of the special environmental values and stories.” Results from the survey have been provided to consultants currently preparing design concepts for the building renewal project at the Mary Cairncross Reserve.

Contributed by Jenny Kelly There was a nip in the air when our girls hit off to play a Single Stableford for trophies donated by Meg Ferran and Pam Marsden. The temperature soon warmed up, and 67 players enjoyed a day out on our lovely fairways. No one enjoyed their day more than Barb Drury who won Division 1 with a total of 37 points. Barb was closely followed by Cathy Stone on 36 points. Division 2 winner, with 34 points was one of our new members, Lyn Wallace. Runner up to Lyn was Anne Stockwell who came in with 33 points. Nearest to the Pins went to Barb on number 2, Lea Doyle on 5 and Gail Gundry on the 16th. Division 1 on the 18th went to Shirley Cooper, while Fay Raven won Division 2. The ball rundown went to 31.

Contributed by Steve Pitt On Saturday, May 17 HBC sent a team of four athletes to Brisbane for the Inala PCYC Tournament. It was another great night at the fights with three of our athletes being matched for bouts. First up we had Dana Coolwell who again stepped up a weight division to fight, giving away 4 kgs to an athlete from Bundaberg in the 44 kg Junior Division. Dana controlled the bout from the opening bell using a good variation of body and head offence to score cleanly on his opponent. Dana found his range in the second round using his straight lead hand to good effect and looked in control the entire fight to come away with a comfortable win. Next up saw Chaska Coolwell who also stepped up a division to fight also giving away 4 kgs to box against a strong athlete from the Ashmore PCYC in the 63 kg Junior Division. Chaska's opponent came out firing in the first round with very hard shots in attempt to use his weight and

Cross country rivalry

It was another stunning winter morning and the course mapped out around the school proved an interesting challenge for the children of houses - Stanley in blue and Coochin in red. The Preps ran one lap of the school, equaling 500m while Year’s 1, 2, 3 and 4 did two. Four laps for the 10-year-olds and onwards, up to six laps for the 12 and 13-year-olds. Stanley proved formidable achieving 96 points and taking out the Cross Country trophy. The older kids who managed to come in 1st, 2nd and 3rd (20 in total) will go onto participate in the District Cross Country event to be held at St Michael’s Caboolture.

At the beginning of last December, athletes from 29 Asia Pacific and East Asia regions competed in the inaugural Special Olympics 2013 Asia Pacific Games held in Newcastle, NSW. The Australian team competed with courage and determination as they represented our proud sporting nation at the largest games ever held for athletes with an intellectual disability in the southern hemisphere. Joselyn Evans of Glass House Mountains was selected to swim for Australia. She trained hard and was enthusiastically encouraged and supported by many locals and organisations, such as the Rotary Club of Glasshouse Mountains, Beerwah Lions Club and her work place, Beerwah-Peachester RSL, who all helped her with finances to go to Newcastle. Joselyn swam three races and a medley relay and came home with three Silver medals. Joselyn’s parents, Deb and Justin Evans said they were extremely proud of her and all the athletes, medals or no medals. “Special Olympics is the only sporting event I know of, where the last athlete, especially if they are really lagging behind, is cheered for more enthusiastically than the winner. It's quite incredible to behold,” Deb said. Not long after Jos returned home, she was selected to play basketball for Queensland in the Special Olympics National Titles to be held in Melbourne in October this year. So she is off again, this time to compete for her State.
