Christmas break. Back at Easter (which seems like years ago) we definitely didn’t think we would still be around and for quite a few months we seemed to limp along only online, then going to monthly printing. Finally, we made it to printing fortnightly and, more recently, some have been bumper editions. I know 2020 has been a really challenging year for many and I have been really impressed with how people in our community were able to cope, pivot (my least favourite word for this year) and move onto our new normal (my second

At GC&M News we have really appreciated support from so many parts of our community - readers, contributors and advertisers who have allowed us to keep bringing you the newspaper and sharing all the great and, at times, not so great things happening across our townships. In those first few COVID months we definitely limped along. However, as the finish line for the year is now in sight we sprinted through the past couple of weeks. We are looking forward to coming back in 2021, continuing our fortnightly production as well as introducing some new digital opportunities in the future. The spirit of Christmas By Sonia Isaacs Clark Beerwah local Gwenda Wright was so impressed by the kindness and generosity of her 11-year-old neighbour she recently contacted GC&M News to share this delightful story to reminds us what Christmas is all about. Telisha McAinsh believes in helping others wherever she can. When the Peachester State School student recently raised nearly $270 from a plant stall selling succulents, she decided to buy 30 small gifts locally to distribute to children in need around the hinterland and women’s shelters in Brisbane. Telisha wanted to buy the gifts so those kids could enjoy Christmas as much as she does. “I want everyone to feel equal, so I have bought Christmas presents for kids that didn’t have much so that they could feel the same as everyone else,” Telisha said. “I thought it would be nice for them to feel as happy and excited as I do at Christmas time, especially when I walk out to the lounge room and see presents.” Telisha originally thought that she would raise about $60 at a garage sale her neighbour Gwenda Wright was running. However, a local donation of extra plants led to busy behind the scenes support on the day from her mum Katrina and siblings Madilyn, Kurtis and Shaylee. They helped pot extra succulents from their garden, which resulted in the Beerwah youngster raising $217.20.

Dad Andrew topped up the final amount with whatever spare change he could find, resulting in a decent amount to put towards Christmas presents for others. As well as wanting to support kids in need, Telisha said she wanted to make sure all the gifts she bought were from local businesses in Beerwah to help put money back into the community. She also thought it would be better to shop locally so her mum wouldn’t have to drive her around and spend extra money on petrol, as well as being better for the environment. “Some kids just aren’t as lucky as us, so I wanted them to feel happy at Christmas too,” Telisha said. “I think it’s always nice to be kind to others and it feels good to give and to help other kids out.” Telisha bought craft items and books and will wrap them into 30 Christmas packages that she sincerely hopes brings joy to others. Her mum Katrina said although all her kids were good, Telisha was the kindest, taking her thoughtfulness to the next level in thinking about others especially this Christmas. Glenda and her husband moved into the street about 18 months ago and Telisha’s family moved from Cootamundra last January. Both are very happy to have chosen Beerwah as their new home.

Community response to climate change Maleny has taken its first steps to explore community responses to climate change at a recent community forum facilitated by Maleny Forums, a local group that raises local issues, increases knowledge and fosters local action. In the lead up to the forum a survey was carried out to gauge attitudes and action already being undertaken by residents of postcode 4552 in response to climate change, which was completed by 120 participants. Claire Booth, a member of Maleny Forums coordinating team, said that 92% of survey responders said they were greatly or somewhat concerned about climate change. “Many people said they are already taking action at an individual level, such as recycling, reducing food waste by composting and organics, reducing their use of plastics, buying local to minimise food miles, and having solar panels on their houses,” Claire said. Seventy people attended the forum that featured a range of different approaches to community-driven responses including community-owned renewable energy systems which was presented by Luke Reade, carbon capture by Susie Duncan, community recycling by Jorje Rivera, and community gardens by Kamala Alister from Maple Street Cooperative. There was also a presentation by Gillian Smith, Sunshine Coast Council’s coordinator sustainability that demonstrated council’s strong commitment and
involvement in projects and responses to climate change; and local weather enthusiast and author Jack Wilcox provided information about local weather events. After a useful question and answer session, individuals registered their interest in hearing more about or being involved in Maleny community responses to climate change. While Ewen Maddock Dam’s popular swimming area remains closed for dam upgrade work, there will be free entry for those who fancy a dip to beat the heat at the Mooloolah State School Pool The free entry period runs until Thursday, April 1 as part of an initiative by Seqwater, the Mooloolah State School P&C and Swim am byth to provide swimming opportunities to the local community during the summer. Time for animal welfare laws review The Animal Care and Protection Act has been in place for almost two decades and the Queensland Government has announced that it is time to conduct a full review of animal welfare legislation. The review will examine all aspects of the Animal Care and Protection Act to make sure it meets changing community expectations. Minister for Agricultural Industry Development and Fisheries and Minister for Rural Communities Mark Furner said it was time to ensure that the law reflected the level of decency that the government and community expected in relation to the treatment of all animals. “We know millions of Queenslanders love their animals and make them a part of their families,” Mr Furner said. Working closely with RSPCA Queensland and independent experts in the field, the review of the Animal Care and Protection Act will include: • a review of penalties to ensure that enforcement options are fit for purpose, • an investigation of the infringement notice scheme in response to animal welfare offences,
• oversight and governance of externally appointed inspectors, and • options to facilitate the reporting of animal cruelty by animal welfare professionals including veterinary surgeons. Mr Furner said Queenslanders would also get to have their say on any proposed changes to the Animal Care and Protection Act. This week we asked local dog breeder and committee member of Sunshine Coast Kennel Club at Beerwah, Helen Weil, for her response to the Queensland Government’s announcement of the review of animal welfare legislation. She said the announcement of a review was certainly welcomed and she was encouraged that change might occur. However, the notion that Queensland “has some of the toughest animal welfare laws in the nation” was questionable, Helen said. “The introduction of the BIN (breeder identification number) has not stopped puppy farming but led to an increase in puppy breeding for profit,” she said. “It is hoped that this review will

strengthen the animal welfare laws and consider changes to the BIN such that there is rigour, effort and cost to obtain a BIN. “Make it an effective control over who is a registered breeder, not just a number,” Helen said. Sunshine Coast Animal Refuge president Penny Brischke said the announcement that the state government was reviewing animal welfare legislation was received with much hope at SCARS. “It is seen as a timely and much needed review given the current situation where approval is being sought to build a large breeding/boarding facility on the coast,” Penny said. “I would hope the state government will listen to the views of the many people who care about animals, domestic and others, in strengthening the legislation to protect animals from inhumane practices and living conditions, especially profit-generating ones. “Specifically, in relation to domestic animals, we would value a review of
the BIN breeder registration system, which is currently not sufficient to stop backyard breeding and puppy and kitten mills. “Of course, our focus will be on requesting tighter controls around breeding domestic animals and fighting for improvements in the animal welfare conditions for animals in breeding facilities and the like. “The Act (2001) states a ‘person in charge of an animal owes a duty of care and must not breach it’. We would like to see the definition of ‘duty of care’ applied so that it actually does protect animals in vulnerable situations such as breeding facilities. “Also, to have open and transparent reporting of animal cruelty situations allowed, with appropriate penalties for individuals and businesses that breach animal welfare standards. “We would like the legislation to actually stand up for the animals and enforce strong and suitable standards across the industries involved,” Penny said.

Old tobacco farmhouse rescued
It’s a house you might not have noticed until recently but the property at 1286 Steve Irwin Way, Beerwah appears to be receiving a new lease of life. After cleaning up the overgrown gardens, the high-set timber house, just over the Coochin Creek Bridge at the entrance to the old Austral sand mining operation, was a bit worse for wear and in need of some ‘renovation rescue’. For the past few weeks, tradespeople have been hard at work refurbishing the old original Queenslander, with a representative of the new site owner confirming the house is to stay where it is and will be lived in once the work is complete. Marketed through Colliers International, the 17.63 hectare block was sold back in October after a marketing campaign focussing on the fact that the property is designated within the SEQ Regional Plan urban footprint, making it a perfect housing development site. The land was cleared in the 1920s and ’30s for farming, and was later used to grow tobacco, which at the time was a major local industry. The current owners – Beerwah Pines Pty Ltd – have cleared trees off the site and are readying the block for future development.
They recently submitted an operational works permit application to Sunshine Coast Council to fill in two of the four ponds on the block. The two balancing ponds will take about 3,920 cubic metres of fill, which the application says will largely come from excess road work material created by the Bruce Highway upgrades. Unfortunately for Beerwah Pines Pty Ltd, the council has deemed that the application has not been properly made due to deficiencies in the information provided. The applicant has until early January to remedy the shortcomings, otherwise the application will be rejected.
Council services this holiday season Sunshine Coast Council will have some changes to hours of services during the festive season. Council’s after-hours emergency call centre will operate 24 hours a day via the customer service number 5475 7272. All customer contact counters, development information counters and reception desks will close at 2pm on Thursday, December 24 and will re-open on Monday, January 4. On December 29, 30 and 31 you will still be able to contact council via phone, web chat, email and web call back. There will be no interruptions to kerbside waste and recycling collections. Waste collections will be as per normal schedule on all days, including Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. Council’s resource recovery facilities will close on Christmas Day but will trade as normal on all other days. Sunshine Coast Libraries will be closed on public holidays and will be available all other days of the holiday season. The Sippy Creek Animal Pound will operate as normal except on Christmas Eve when it will close early at 2pm.

Energex suspends planned outages As Queenslanders stock their fridges for celebrations and businesses cater for the lastminute Christmas rush, Energex has announced a moratorium on planned outages from Wednesday, December 23 – Sunday, January 3. With a release date of December 18 on Apple iTunes and Spotify, our newest pop/rock sensation Angus Joyce with his mate Micah on solo guitar is set to tear up the charts with his catchy ditty ‘Pete the Pebble’. Readers may recall an article in GC&M News in October that described how Peachester State School student Angus was inspired to write and produce the song during lockdown. His unique composition about a pebble called Pete and his brother Rebel went on to win a gold award at the junior Queensland School Poetry and Song Competition.
Since then this enterprising young man, with help from friends and family, screen printed a bunch of super funky home-made Pete the Hand-screened Pete the Pebble t-shirts to Pebble t-shirts funded the raise funds to have sound recording of the song the song recorded in the home studio of local songstress and musical mentor, Innessa. Thanks to the successful sale of limited edition t-shirts, this fully self-funded venture even saw the mixed sound recording sent overseas for the final mix! So now, just in time for Christmas, ‘Pete the Pebble’ will be available to download straight to your favourite music streamer ready for family road trips and festive season parties. Business News Focusing on our farming future Farming has always been a big part of the local communities across Glasshouse Country and these days agribusiness, as the industry is known, continues to be a dynamic and growing part of our local economy. This year the executive of the Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce has decided to focus attention on bringing local operators together, and to look for opportunities for them to work collaboratively. Recently the chamber hosted an agribusiness/tourism meeting at the Beerwah Community Hub, attended by about 20 local operators and representatives, to kick things off. Chamber president Jenny Broderick said Beerburrum-based committee member and passionate native bee hive innovator Ann Ross, from Hive Haven, was the driving force behind the event, bringing together a great mix of people keen to make things happen. Our GC&M News editor Lea Parkes took on the job of facilitating the first meeting and getting the group to identify common issues and challenges that can be tackled collectively.
“It was really exciting to see the enthusiasm from everyone in the room about what they would like to see done both in the short and long term,” Jenny said. “The chamber is keen to immediately get behind promoting local produce and producers from across Glasshouse Country and creating local opportunities and events for them to become involved.”
She said there were some quite complex issues facing local farmers, particularly those looking to diversify and move into agritourism. “One way we may be able to assist them to achieve these types of goals is for us to be a collective voice in future planning opportunities with local and state government,” Jenny said. “It is really exciting.” Although the group has only met once
it is clear there are big plans. Smaller working groups will be formed to start to get things happening. “As Lea at GC&M News has thrown her support behind the initiative, expect to hear plenty about what this group is getting up to and to learn more about our local producers in general,” Jenny said. Bunya benches retain local links True to its collective ethos, the recent Maple Street Co-operative expansion has involved a conscious effort to prioritise the use of local community resources. With local groups and tradespeople coming together to help extend the premises, salvaged wood from a locally sourced Bunya pine that had been stored for years was cleverly repurposed and crafted into window display benches. The 80-100-year-old tree originally stood on the Obi Obi Valley property of Maleny resident and former Maroochy Shire councillor Hermann Schwabe. He had the tree saved in slab form and stored it in his garage for more than 25 years before donating it to the Blackall Range Woodcrafters Guild (the Woodies). “I was very happy to hear that the Woodies have made good use of the slab and they made sure it was put to decent use that will now benefit the community,” Hermann said. Woodies member John Muller said the slab had been stored for a few years in the original Woodies’ shed on Western Avenue, Montville before recent community conversations led to it being supplied to the Maple Street Co-operative to be purposefully used. Woodworker Matthew Davies, who was tasked with the job of making the four window display benches, said he was very happy to have been able to make something beautiful out of the wood that managed
to embody the rustic feel and natural form of the timber. “It’s lovely to create something from materials that have a local area connection. We purposely kept the saw cuts in the finished product as a way of keeping the memory of the people who prepared the slab, and hopefully the benches will still be used 100 years from now,” Matthew said.

Facilitator of the year By Sonia Isaacs-Clark Landsborough conflict resolution practitioner Tom Stodulka has been awarded the prestigious title of 2020 Facilitator of the Year at the Australian Alternative Disputes Resolution Awards gala dinner held last month in Sydney. The awards ceremony was hosted by the Australian Disputes Centre (ADC) and adds yet another feather to the considerable cap of accomplishments for Tom, who is always extremely gracious about his achievements. Tom has achieved an impressive career as a mediator that has seen him facilitate more than 4,000 legal disputes in Australia. He is also a fellow at Bond University and the Resolution Institute. Having been a finalist for ADC awards for the past few years, Tom said it was particularly rewarding to be recognised in this way. “In addition to the 2019 Mediator of the Year award given at the annual Australasian Law Awards, it was great recognition for my 26 years as a mediator and facilitator across Australia, including the NT, NSW, ACT and Queensland,” Tom said. Momentous year for Beerwah Bulldogs “It was honestly a bit surreal and a few tears were shed. It was such an achievement that I was even getting phone calls from people involved in the club from the 1970s wanting to celebrate the win!” 2020 was by all accounts a tricky year, with the committee working hard in the off season to get a team on the field before COVID-19 hit. Shannon said having A grade team captain and coach Jordan Meads come on board was a great boost for the club. The team also benefitted from the strong recruitment of high calibre players. “We’ll be pushing hard to build on this year’s success and fingers crossed for another future win. I’m confident our club will go from strength to strength,” Shannan said. “Personally, I’m very proud at what we have achieved and it’s great to see that we are growing in popularity with our club having one of the largest social media followings on the Sunshine Coast.” This year also saw the club successfully receive several grants thanks to local sponsors and grant initiatives, including the purchase of new goal posts, a storage shed and club house furniture and equipment.

Co-captain Jaime Maliko and captain-coach Jordan Meads celebrate their A grade win On the back of such an energising and historic win, 2021 is looking great for the club that now has an A and Reserve grade team, C grade, open women and a number of under 18 teams, as well as the occasional masters team. “A big push for our club is our family-oriented culture and we currently have around 400 members, with a range of male and female teams,” Shannan said. “Another big push for us is further developing our women and girls teams, and we are very excited to be heading in that direction with a number of parents at our club particularly passionate about encouraging this focus.” The club already has enough interest from local girls to have a number of junior teams set to play in 2021. By Sonia Isaacs Clark 2020 was a momentous year in more ways than one for the Beerwah Bulldogs Rugby League Club with this year’s unprecedented win (the first time in 41 years!) by the men’s A grade team, who took out top spot in the Brisbane rugby league competition. Club president Shannan Roy said the outstanding victory for the club represented not only a triumphant achievement but honoured many years of blood, sweat and tears behind the scenes to get to this calibre of competition and success. The win was ecstatically celebrated by current and past members and players. Shannan said he believed this was the first time a Sunshine Coast team had played a full season in the Brisbane Premier League competition. For the team to then go on to win the competition was just incredible, especially given that not even 12 months ago it was uncertain if the club would have enough players to put a team together. “Basically, our club was started in 1979 and we have never won an A grade competition. So it was a very special moment to realise we’d won the premiership,” Shannan said.

Beegees welcome Goanna’s to call club home By Sonia Isaacs Clark After 12 months of planning and negotiations, the Sunshine Coast’s first Indigenous football team, the Sunshine Coast Goanna’s, will now call Beerwah Glasshouse United Football Club (Beegees) home. This exciting affiliation was officially announced at the Beegees AGM at the end of the November, and demonstrates a collaborative vision to improve access to sports and positive pathways for local Indigenous people, while also strengthening community bonds through football.

Sunshine Coast Goanna’s founder and Landsborough resident Wayne Alberts said he was initially inspired to create a local Indigenous football team while sitting on his back deck in late 2018. Within just five months, with the help of his wife Linda and various sponsors, a squad of 15 predominantly local players were able to field a men’s team in an Indigenous tournament held in November 2019. A club and committee were subsequently formed with the Sunshine Coast Goanna’s working towards fielding a women’s team and future ambitions to potentially field a junior team to compete in future tournaments alongside the men’s team. During the year, the Goanna’s have also deepened their connection with Indigenous communities as well as playing some friendly matches that saw both men and women participating. The Goanna’s train once a month, with practice set to intensify closer to tournament dates. Team members are aged from 16 to adults and currently six players also play for Beegees, including Ronald (Ronnie) Woulfe who was elected at the recent AGM as a representative committee member. Wayne said it was initially through his friendship with Ronnie, an established Beegees player, that the partnership idea was sparked. “There were a lot of yarns over 12 months and it was great to have the partnership officially confirmed at the AGM with a unanimous vote from the committee,” Wayne said.
The new kit designed for the Goanna’s partnership with Beegees will be launched in early 2021 in early 2021 to be worn by our players. The green jerseys will have circles to represent meeting places for Goanna’s and depict pathways for meeting others, which is symbolic of the partnership with Beegees.” The Goanna’s have secured affiliation with the Sunshine Coast Wanderers National Premier League program, and team numbers are looking strong for the season ahead. Wayne said it was great to be able to showcase the talent of local Indigenous players. Community News Rotary’s generosity welcomed Seven local community groups have been given the chance to further extend their service to the community with the help of more than $6,000 in grant money from the Rotary Club of the Glasshouse Mountains. The third annual presentation evening for the 2020 Rotary community grants was held on Monday, December 7 at Vianta Espresso and Wine Bar and saw representatives from various community organisations come together. Earlier this year, the Rotary Club advertised for not-for-profit community groups operating in the Glasshouse Country region to apply for grants of up to $1,000 for a specific purpose that would benefit the local community. The funds went to Peachester History Committee for a camera and associated equipment to digitise historical records; Beerwah Sportsground Management Committee for a portable barbeque; QCWA Beerwah branch for a security screen door for the Beerwah CWA Hall; Mend It Café for a sewing machine and associated materials; Morris House Neighbourhood Centre to gutter guard the centre and CWA Hall;
Glasshouse Country Toastmasters for a webcam and associated equipment to conduct online meetings; The Glasshouse Country Mens Shed for a drill bit sharpening machine and Landsborough Community Kindergarten for a mural by a professional artist.

Beerwah Commonwealth Bank gives back was a way to recognise the great work done by the organisation in taking care of people who were homeless or struggling financially, as well as how they supported the broader community with a range of programs and services. “Individual Commonwealth Bank branches were able to nominate a local charity of their choice to support through this community grant program,” Patty said. “All of our staff here are locals, so they were very familiar with the assistance that Morris House provides. We chose them this year because of the great feedback we’d received about the work they do, and we appreciate their ethos of taking care of people doing it tough. “This was a small way of giving back, by supporting those that help the community that also supports us,” Patty said. Ann Husband from Morris House said she was grateful to receive the grant on behalf of Morris House and its volunteers. Ann said it was a lovely acknowledgement of the efforts of the centre’s volunteers who all worked selflessly to support and provide services for their community.

A birthday gift for Barung Landcare Over the past 30 years Maleny’s Barung Landcare has become one of the largest suppliers of native plants in the community, including many of our most endangered rainforest plants. 2020 marked Barung’s 30th birthday and a big year had been planned, starting with their popular Wood Expo, which usually draws more than 10,000 visitors to town, and a fundraising campaign for their move to new premises on the Maleny Community Precinct. With the associated impacts of COVID19, the 30th year had almost slipped away without a celebratory cake, candles or presents.
Then, out of the blue, Barung was given a donation of $10,000 from a small local club called Earth Benefits. The club has never had more than 20 members. It was established 20 years ago to help its members with micro loans for projects that would benefit the Earth. Since its inception, it has made numerous loans to its members for help with such things as solar energy or water conservation. Earth Benefits treasurer Mary Meadows said the club was given seed funding of $10,000 by the then Conservation Council, which was invested at the Maleny Credit Union.

Santa visits playgroup kids Santa, full of jolly laughs and gifts, recently came to see the kids at the Mooloolah Valley Playgroup Christmas party. The kids especially loved having Santa share the magic of Christmas with a story. Outgoing Playgroup coordinator of five years, Natasha Odgers, said Mooloolah Valley Playgroup was made up of wonderful people who came together each year not only for fun and socialising, but also to form friendships, that often lasted long term, and to feel a part of the community. “This playgroup is 100% run by volunteer parents and community grandparents who each do their bit to make it run smoothly,” Natasha said. “They take pride in the community playgroup and enjoy making it a welcoming place for newcomers.” Mooloolah Valley Playgroup will start again in 2021 on Wednesday, January 27, 9.30–11am. Playgroup is for children aged 0–5 years. There is no entry fee but people are required to become a member of Playgroup Queensland (www.playgroupqld.com.au), partly to cover insurance. This is required by the
third visit so parents can come and try for free first. Membership is free for families with a child under 12 months and $40 for those with older children. Community Christmas breakfast
Beating the beast
Contributed by Mavis Robb The Glasshouse Legacy Laurel Club enjoyed a socially distanced Christmas lunch on Wednesday, November 25. How delightful everyone looked in their lovely blue face masks – enough to scare any doubting beast. Santa had called, distributing gifts of a protective nature. He gave each one an environmentally friendly shopping bag containing a mask, a cake of soap for handwashing (preferable to alcohol and
destroying 99.9% of beastly bacteria) and, not to be scorned, a toilet roll for general purposes. We extend our best wishes to you all. May Christmas bring hope and a degree of joy with friends and family, while those who may be faraway join you in spirit. With respect and appreciation from your Legacy family and may our scientists be rewarded with a successful vaccine to destroy the beast totally.
Contributed by Ian Demack, Maleny A lot of people have been asking about the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre’s Christmas breakfast, which has been a long-standing Christmas morning tradition for many in Maleny and beyond. This year, COVID-19 restrictions have seen so many events cancelled. We want to thank the community for its ongoing support, while keeping everyone safe. So this year we’re presenting something a little different, which is the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre’s Christmas breakfast in the park. The Sunshine Coast Council has approved our plans to use Bicentennial Park (in Bicentenary Lane, Maleny, right next to the Neighbourhood Centre) on Christmas Day. We will be serving a hot barbeque breakfast between 8-10am, with vegan
choices available. With luck, we may even have some wandering minstrels circulating among the crowd, entertaining you with their gorgeous music! As usual, the meal is on us. It’s our way of thanking the community for its ongoing support. There’s plenty to do to plan for and run this event. If you’re interested in volunteering, please contact Frances Harper on 0468 323 864. This breakfast will be COVID Safe. Bring your picnic blanket or folding chairs, and some cool drinks if you wish. Then sit out under the large shade trees with your family and friends and enjoy some good food and good company. Next year, we hope to be back hosting our normal Christmas breakfast at the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre.
Senior Citz celebrate Contributed by Janette Barnes A wonderful Christmas party luncheon was held at the Landsborough Hotel this month. A morning tea with a quiz was followed by a delicious lunch, plus many prizes won in raffles. Marie Klose won the major prize. A great time was had by all.

Making animal wishes come true The team at Sunshine Coast Animal Refuge (SCARS) is reaching out to the community this Christmas to get involved in a lovely initiative to directly support animals awaiting adoption. With an ‘All I want for Christmas’ wish list board set up at the refuge, people can now nominate an animal to support, pick a donation amount from $5, and have that donation put towards individual items of care or comfort for their special chosen animal.

Alternatively, you can make a donation and ask the staff to direct it to one of the animals in the shelter. SCARS president Penny Brischke said the Christmas wish list campaign was a great way to connect the broader community with the cats and dogs at the refuge. It was also an opportunity for those unable to offer a forever home to still make a huge difference to the animals in care. “We know that adoptions don’t always happen at this time of year, so we thought this would be a lovely way for people and families to make a real difference to the lives of our animals, while also helping us brace for our Christmas and post-Christmas influx,” Penny said. “We’ve made the donation amounts from $5-$150, so it’s a campaign that everyone, including kids, can enjoy being part of.” A $5 donation will help purchase a cat toy, litter tray, new dog lead or pet food for kittens in foster care, while a $10 donation can be put towards tick prevention treatments or a new dog bed cover.

Local op shops have Christmas all wrapped up By Sonia Isaacs Clark With more people looking for sustainable ideas for Christmas decorations and gifts, our local op shops have you covered when it comes to earth friendly and cost savvy ways to do Christmas well this year. Most local stores have an abundance of Christmas-themed stock for sale, so you can tizzy up your tree and decorate your house, yard or Christmas feasting table in a way that won’t break the bank, while supporting local charities and doing your bit for the planet. Some stores have also taken the great initiative of providing donated items that are unused or still in boxes as Christmas gift ideas, which offer an easy and sustainable solution to gift purchasing dilemmas. Michelle Sparks from Bloomhill Beerwah said that as well as selling Christmas items that had been put aside throughout the year, there had been a great response to the sale of unused items that volunteers had gift wrapped ready to go.
“This was a little idea that we came up with to let people grab a gift without the hassle,” Michelle said. “We’ve taken new and unused items still in their boxes and gift wrapped them for Christmas in cellophane, so customers can easily see what they are buying. We’ve wrapped items such as headphones, placemats, photo frames, wallets – so there is something for everyone,” she said. Di Chandler from Mooloolah Op shop said Christmas-themed items and decorations had been put out the front of the store so customers walked past them on the way in. “They sold like hotcakes,” Di said. “We are always looking for ways we can promote more sustainable options for our community and it is great to see our customers getting on board to embrace reusing, recycling and repurposing items for their Christmas shopping lift this year. “It’s also a wonderful way to shop local and support our community organisations,” Di said.

Caloundra VIEW Club’s Christmas dinner Entertainer Billy Guy kept toes tapping while members enjoyed Christmas dinner at the recent Caloundra Evening VIEW meeting. In spite of this year’s unprecedented changes, the club’s trading table of made, baked or grown products raised $500 for the month and members’ donations totalled $3,000 this year. Zone coordinator Clodagh BarwiseSmith presented service badges to eight members for periods of either ten
or 20 years of service to the club.
Members Pat Greenwood, Dal Connolly, Ruth Honzatko, Pam Round, Lesley Doyle and Dianne Sutton received service badges. VIEW clubs raise funds to sponsor disadvantaged students with the aim of breaking the poverty cycle. The Caloundra Evening club’s next function is a friendship dinner at the Caloundra Golf Club on Tuesday, January 19. Inquiries phone Sue on 0403 504 408.

Christmas baskets of blessings
Landsborough Seventh-day Adventist Church members have been busy collecting food, gifts and household items for their annual baskets of blessings event. More than 30 washing baskets have been filled for distribution by Morris House Neighbourhood Centre and St Vinnies to disadvantaged families and individuals in the community. Coordinator Beth Beaden says it was a very practical way for the church to let people know they were loved.

Church members delivered 500 pineapples and Christmas greeting cards to homes surrounding the church. The Magi said: “For we saw His star in the east and have come to worship Him.” It wasn’t easy for them to find Jesus but they did. I can easily forget why we celebrate Christmas. Things get hectic – have we organised holidays, presents, food, cards, etc? At this time of year it can seem that the competition for our time and attention is fierce – finances, relationships, expectations, even disappointments. And yet Christmas is simple. A child was born 2,000 years ago. This child was the One anticipated to bring about a revolution that would result in freedom. This child, Jesus, did bring about a revolution and still does. It is not a showy one, for it starts in our hearts and affects our outlook, attitude and behaviour. This Christmas, seek Jesus.

You Said It Re: Keep our rural life
In response to Joanne Aitken’s letter in the December 9 edition, I must say as a long-term resident of Hardwood Road I entirely agree with every point she makes. I agree people who chose to live in country towns such as Landsborough do so for a reason - to escape the madness that is now our beautiful coastal region, which has been, in my opinion, completely over developed (just take a look at Aura) with no infrastructure in place to handle the influx of population and vehicle growth. I am pretty sure most residents of Landsborough would agree that we do not want this for our area. Yet this council, with help from developers who have no interest in our area (except financial), will just keep doing this and hold people over a financial barrel. With the rezoning in place from rural to low density, the rates would rise to the point where some families would find the financial burden too great, and be forced to sell up to the developers, I call this financial blackmail. I am hoping for a favourable outcome for this situation. And people remember you have a voice - please speak up before it is too late. Fiona Kull Landsborough
Coles Group proposal
I would like to respond to Joan Tucker’s letter in the December 9 edition. The proposal is no doubt supported by Wesfarmers, an allAustralian company based in Western Australia. Wesfarmers divested 5% of its ownership of Coles but still owns many other Australian companies such as Kmart, Target, Officeworks, Bunnings and Kleenheat. These retail outlets are all used by most shoppers even if not on a weekly basis. The application for the initial Coles supermarket, fuel outlet and fast food

will only occupy a small percentage of the 14+ hectare site. In line with the “regional hub” designation of Beerwah, additional retail outlets can be added as our region expands, hopefully to eventually include a Bunnings and a homemaker centre. To suggest that the populations of Mooloolah Valley, Glenview, Landsborough, Beerwah, Glass House Mountains and Beerburrum should all travel by road to a South Caloundra shopping complex in no way solves the problems with traffic and associated stress. The South Caloundra shopping complex is designed to service the Aura estate as well as the future development of South Caloundra. Was it 50,000 new homes to be built? The suggested development at Beerwah is purported to provide 180 jobs, both full and part time, and when fully established the figure rises to 350 jobs. That is work for our local kids who struggle to find places in our existing workplace. To suggest that the new development will fracture Beerwah is nonsense. People are mobile even within our small area and they should have the opportunity to enjoy a greater variety of retail outlets locally. The retail site on Roys Road, complemented by the industrial area along Maroney Road, makes sense to most people I have spoken to. James Aitken Landsborough
Planned shops for us
Perhaps Joan Tucker misses the point that we in Beerwah, and possibly Glass House and Landsborough, would prefer to shop local. Not drive to Caloundra north or south, which doesn’t help our existing businesses one bit. If we had more shopping options in Beerwah, people could come to us. I feel a much better locality is the whole corner of Turner and Peachester Roads including the vacant land in Turner Street.
A new complex on that site would help the existing tenants, who would hopefully relocate back to the centre. At the moment with so many for lease and for sale signs fronting the existing centre it is anything but inviting. We have welcomed so many new families moving to the Beerwah area, let’s offer them something so they can shop local. Perhaps then we could attract Bunnings, Spotlight or similar at a later date. We need shoppers to come to Beerwah - that is the best support for our existing businesses. Roys Road will bring them right to our door - not vice versa. Jessie Martin Beerwah

Give the gift of blood this Christmas
Of the hundreds of injuries likely this silly season, falls are common and locals are being urged to stay safe during the festive holidays. Dr Ben Close, emergency medicine director at Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service (SCHHS), said many people didn’t realise the potential hazards about at Christmas time and were often too busy or distracted to ensure they were keeping themselves safe. “Christmas-related injuries are very common over the festive period as a result of falling from a ladder, table or whatever else is being used to decorate Christmas trees,” Dr Close said. “We also see people falling while using ladders incorrectly. It is important to make sure there is always someone else at home when using a ladder, and never have more than one person on a ladder at a time. “Cables and decorations should be out of the way as they are potential trip hazards. These can be Christmas light cables, Christmas decorations, presents or anything else that clutters up a space, especially if there will be more people present in the space than usual.”
This festive season why not give the gift of life by donating blood at one of the local Red Cross Donormobiles in the lead up to Christmas. Living - Arts Combined artist exhibition at Vianta Arts Art lovers are in for a visual treat during January with a combined exhibition at Vianta Arts of the striking and stunningly evocative imagery of featured artists Wayne Smith and Roman Marrero. Both artists will be at the opening night on Friday, January 8 at 6.30pm. The free exhibition will be open to the public throughout January. Wayne Smith is an accomplished local artist who has worked in a variety of contexts in the creative arts for the past 30 years. His new body of work has been likened in style to the work of the renowned Canadian ‘Group of Seven’ with their unique modern impressionist explorations of landscape. Recently Wayne has found inspiration and similarities in the work of American artist Erin Hanson who practises a style self-described as “open impressionism”. Wayne said he was interested in re-interpreting the sublime and representations of the relationship between nature and humanity. His latest works are stages in the process of engaging with inner feelings, delving into the relationship between the conscious and the unconscious, the seen and the unseen. Visitors to the exhibition will be delighted with the impressive calibre of work on display. A trip to Paris
Maleny Art Direct recently hosted a night of celebration to thank clients for their support throughout the year. It was combined with a showcase of the latest collection of original charcoal artworks ‘Postcards from Paris’ by local artist Satya Demasson. One of the evening’s highlights was the edible art by local artist Viera Keogh in the shape of a 45cm Eiffel tower made from Slovakian Christmas honey gingerbread.

As the end of year is fast approaching, our local community and neighbourhood centres will be closing to offer volunteers and staff a much-needed break. While Christmas and the festive season is a time of great joy and an opportunity to gather with family and friends for most of us, for some it can also be a time of intense hardship and challenge. Our community and neighbourhood centres all offer support during the year towards emergency relief and assistance for those in need. Mindful that they will be closing for a few weeks over the December/January period, representatives from local centres have reached out to GC&M News with a list of alternative support services and contact numbers. Cubs make a difference
The Landsborough Cub Scouts have been learning about making a difference in our local community through learning about organisations that help to make local people’s lives better. The cubs voted to support Wishlist (Sunshine Coast Health Foundation), a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to fundraising for the needs of the Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service and since 1998. Wishlist has raised and directed more than $18 million towards the Coast’s local health system. The cubs decided that rather than raise funds, they would collect donations of gifts that Wishlist could give to some of the adults and children who will be spending Christmas in hospital this year. In the Garden Strange wildlife encounters, continued
Ophiophagy … did you look it up? It’s the word given to an animal that mostly hunts and eats snakes. Paul Provic sent some amazing photos he took at his Land for Wildlife-listed property in Mount Mellum back in 2015 of a red-bellied black snake eating another red-bellied black snake. “A few years back, returning home from one of our paddocks late in the afternoon, we came across a redbellied black snake eating another one, which happened to be bigger than it,”
Paul wrote. Red-bellied black snakes are a commonly seen species in our region but the spread of cane toads has severely decreased their numbers over time. In the wild, they mostly stick to a regular diet of frogs, rats, mice, lizards, birds, fish, tadpoles and eels (they are good swimmers, so do hunt in the water, and they can stay submerged for over 20 minutes). However, they are known for their
ophiophagous tendencies, eating a wide variety of snake species including, on the rare occasion, their own. Unlike in our world, cannibalism isn’t uncommon in snake society with many species taking the opportunity to eat other snakes. At the time, Paul asked expert Professor Rick Shine at the University of Sydney about the behaviour. Rick explained that red-bellied black snakes taking big prey is rare and that possibly on this occasion one just managed to take one by chance. Paul contacted another expert, Kieran Aland of the Queensland Museum, who offered another possibility. He suggested that the larger snake may have started getting its mouth around a frog (or similar) when the interloper appeared and grabbed the frog plus the attached snake, which it then proceeded to swallow, almost inadvertently. Red-bellied black snakes are venomous, although there are no recorded human fatalities. Their shy nature means they rarely interact with humans. Their primary defence is to retreat, so they’ll quickly move

Contributed by Patricia Bradford Our group held its final gathering of the year in my garden. After a delicious morning tea and judging the competition bench, members were invited to tour the garden. The dragon fruit, which were just coming into flower, were admired and drew a few comments. Members also collect cuttings. The long, hot, dry spell has taken its toll and, with a dwindling water supply, the vege garden has priority.
Results of the competition bench for November were first Suella Lanceley on 19 points, second Pam Innes on 16 points and third Trish Bradford on 15 points. So, like most snakes, it’s best to leave them alone and they’ll leave you alone too. Red-bellied black snakes are one of a group who give birth to live young – this is called vivipary. Unlike many other snakes that lay eggs, red-bellied black snakes hold and incubate their embryos within an internal sac. Towards the end of the pregnancy females are known to congregate together, basking and sharing the same night-time hiding place. Scientists are unsure why they do this, with the best guess being for greater protection from predators. When the young are developed, the female delivers the small baby snakes, which can be an effort as there can be 5-19 young and they can measure up to 22cm each. The town name Mooloolah is considered to be a derivation of the Gubbi Gubbi First Nation people’s word for the red-bellied black snake (‘mullu’).

Contributed by Miles Allen We’ve had two very big weeks at Maleny Bowls Club as we roll towards a short break over the festive season. Sunday Social Bowls attracted 22 bowlers who braved the hot conditions. Big thanks to Liz Williams who looked after the catering and to John Williams who looked after the bar. It was good to see have Doug McGuffiche back in action and also Jayden and Kirby Gillis showing their dad how to play. Winners were Brian Squires and Bob Galligan, runners up were Mick Bulger and Noelene Annakin. Jim King and Miles Allen won the monthly pairs competition at the hospitable Mapleton Bowls Club and were closely followed in the runnerup position by Jim Wiedman and Joe Walters. A clean sweep for Maleny! The Fours team of Jim King, Dave Edwards, John Williams and Miles Allen won the first round at Kilcoy against some stiff opposition. At Twilight Bowls last week there was a big turnout of 53 bowlers with 11 new players. It was good to see so many people using our facilities and enjoying themselves. The twice-yearly local derby took place

The grand final was between the high rollers of the Pegasus team (who have only lost one game this season) and the mighty Musketeers. Doug McGuffiche stood in for an injured Dennis Kyling and Ray Spry moved into the skip’s position for Pegasus. In a rain-affected close game the scores were level with one end to play. Dave Edwards hit the jack into the ditch and his bowl stayed nearby. Despite valiant attempts by Harry Flynn, the Musketeers won the last end and therefore the trophy. Congratulations to both teams for getting into the final. Maleny Bowls Club will be taking a short break over the festive season and re-opening on Wednesday, January 6. Grassroots boost to Glasshouse Districts Cricket Club By Sonia Isaacs Clark While 2020 has proved particularly challenging for community sporting groups, the Glasshouse Districts Cricket Club has gained another welcome boost for its women’s team. The club was recently awarded a $1,500 grant through the Grassroots Cricket Fund, a joint initiative of Cricket Australia and the Australian Cricketers Association. As featured in our cover story in the September 2 edition, the all-ages women’s team was also awarded the Sunshine Coast Umpire Association’s Spirit of Cricket Award, so all-in-all there have been some great outcomes in 2020, particularly given this is only the second season of competition for the team. Committee member and grants officer, Leanne McAllister, said the grant money would be used during the current season to buy a much-needed portable
shade gazebo, which will greatly benefit the players. For their first season, funds were allocated to buy essential helmets and wicket keeping gear, as well as balls and other training equipment for the women’s team. “Our club and players are all very excited to receive this grant. The women’s team is a vital part of our club, offering a complete pathway for all players from under 10s all the way through to senior men’s and women’s cricket, with players also eligible to play representative cricket for the Sunshine Coast Cricket Association,” Leanne said. In other good news, the club has recently been selected by Cricket Australia to be profiled on its social media channels. The Range Croquet Club Landsborough Tennis Club If the kids (or adults) are feeling active these holidays, Landsborough Tennis Club have several activities planned during the break for local kids aged 6-16, and you don’t need to be a junior member to participate in the holiday program. Their popular ‘C’mon let’s Play’ sessions will be offered every Wednesday during the holidays from 3-5pm, however make sure to book your spot in advance with Katya. Weekly holiday coaching sessions will commence Monday, January 4 until Friday, January 22, from 3-5pm weekdays except Wednesdays – cost is $25; Katya’s ‘Drills and Thrills’ sessions are also available on these coaching days from 5.30pm for 1 hour at $20 per player. a fun way to kick start or maintain sport fitness without the stop start of coaching or competition - basically it’s high-octane tennis with non-stop drills and music with groups of six or more players enjoying non-stop tennis. Suitable for ages 6-16, the morning will include fun and games for all ages and abilities, mystery prizes, target hitting, human ball machine, hot dog/ drink included at lunch - cost is just $25. Helen Andrews and Donna Manning lost their game against Vince and Val Carbery who pegged out to win 2-14. Sally Adams and Janelle Wilson played a friendly game that ended in a 7-all draw. On Sunday, December 13 the rain came down and no play was recorded. The photograph shows that not all the activities on the lawn are carried out with a mallet. Here Sarah Widin, Wallace Roy and Stuart Craig demonstrate their skill at gardening and, in Wallace’s case, practising a little yoga as they attempt to remove carpet grass from the lawn. Rain forced the cancellation of the recent
working bee. We will try again on December 21 after which there will be no play for a while – probably until early January when the grass thickens. Thanks go to all who have helped to maintain our lawns. Our excellent, well cared for lawns are on the right side of the Maleny Showground. The doctor then marched down the hallway to the first doctor’s room. “What is wrong with you?” he demanded. “This woman is 63 years old, she has two grown children and several grandchildren, and you told her she was pregnant!” The new doctor continued to write on his clipboard and without looking up said: “Does she still have the hiccups?”

Did you ever wonder why there are no dead penguins on the ice in Antarctica? Where do they go? Wonder no more! It is a known fact that the penguin is a very ritualistic bird that lives an extremely ordered and complex life. The penguin is very committed to its family and will mate for life, as well as maintain a form of compassionate contact with its offspring throughout its life. If a penguin is found dead on the ice surface, other members of the family and social circle have been known to dig holes in the ice, using their vestigial wings and beaks, until the hole is deep enough for the dead bird to be rolled into and buried.
