What's On this week

I know that there are some people who don’t love strawberries and for the life of me I just can’t understand. I reckon they have to be one of the best things to come from our local farms and it is definitely one of my favourite things about Beerwah Charity Sports and Spring Carnival, which is why we couldn’t go past having them on our cover this week. Each year people go to the Ekka for a strawberry icecream but I’d rather get one of these lovely mini pavlovas with fresh local strawberries and cream at Beerwah’s annual event. Now in its 47th year, it is a great family fun day out and, like everyone else who regularly attends, I have my favourites. In particular I love the mini horse events and the home baked goods stall. The event marks the beginning of spring and it is always a lovely day to wander about and catch up with friends and neighbours that you may not have seen for a while. The best part is all of the funds raised on the day go to the Cancer Council Queensland. The event generally raises more than $20,000 each year, which is such an amazing effort by all those involved! See you at the Beerwah Sportsground on Saturday from 8.30am and don’t forget to bring your $2 entry fee. Regards,

Local News Sod to turn on small house This Friday will mark a significant turning point for Compassionate Housing Affordability Solutions Maleny (CHASM) when Cr Jenny McKay will officially turn the first sod towards the establishment of a small house within the Maleny Co-op community garden. Following two years of fundraising combined with two major grants CHASM Housing has now raised the $60,000 required to bring their prototype of an affordable home to town. CHASM Housing’s small house project aims to improve community awareness about the needs and benefits of small and affordable housing, while normalising the idea of living in smaller dwellings. In this pilot project a transportable small home will be sited on land that has been leased from the Maleny Co-op, facing onto Bicentenary Lane. The transportable nature of the building allows it to be established on a semi-permanent site and connected to all services, yet easily re-sited if the needs of the landholder change. The building will meet the requirements of Sunshine Coast Council’s secondary dwelling criteria and is an example of what could be established in many backyards within the council area. CHASM Housing is working with Creative Cabins of Gatton, who are very keen to support the small home movement with their uniquely affordable and functional cabins.

By Jennifer Kent For the second year running, Seanna Thompson attended the 2019 Australian School Sport Swimming Championships, held this year at the Melbourne Aquatic Centre from 31 July–2 August. Seanna, 11, took home a gold, silver and bronze, as well smashing her own PBs in a number of events. Seanna, who has autism, an acquired brain injury and congenital scoliosis, competed in seven events at the national swimming championships as a multi-class swimmer and is proof that a person’s ability is not determined by their disability. Going into the championships, Seanna was expecting to compete in four individual events and two relays, but a last-minute call up by the Northern Territory swim team, who were short a swimmer for their relay, saw Seanna help them take out the gold! Mum, Christine Peters, was there to cheer her on, saying that while she came away with several medals on the day, the real achievement was seeing her represent multi-class swimmers. “It is a huge experience for Seanna, both physically and mentally,” Christine said. “Having a team of supporters has been so valuable in helping her get to this stage.” Christine said that while Seanna was the recipient of the medals, there was a huge team behind her every step of the way, including her swim coach,

Di Feldman, who she said was an “absolute Godsend”. Seanna’s introduction to swimming was one of necessity and while Christine, a swim teacher herself, advocates for every child to learn to swim, Seanna ultimately swims to keep her body mobile. Competing gives her a reason to swim and everything else is just a bonus. They say it takes a village to raise a child and Christine says there are so many people to thank from medical staff, pool staff, coaching staff, the school and the community - it takes someone special to take on someone with complex needs and get the best out of them. Christine actively encourages parents to talk to their schools and organisations about what supports are available to ensure their kids are given the same opportunities as others. “Every child should have the opportunity to participate,” she said. “There are supports out there to make sure the parents and children with a disability can have these opportunities too”. And what they can do is amazing!

Horizon offers otherworldly experience locally Horizon Festival, the Sunshine Coast's premier multi-arts festival, kicks of this Friday August 23 for ten arts-fuelled days of visual art, music, performance, words + ideas, film and creative workshops. Tracking the Earth’s motions through space, the work documents in real time the audience’s precise position in relation to the stars, sonifying stellar data in a unique celebration of the majesty and beauty of the cosmos.

Dancers at Beerwah State High School have been extremely busy this year including performing in the Sunshine Coast and Brisbane Dance Eisteddfod. On Friday, May 31 they competed in the Brisbane Performing Arts Challenge were they received first place in jazz, third place in contemporary, a very highly commended in hip hop and highly commended for musical theatre. The capacity to impress the judges has clearly grown with each performance judging by their results from their fourth competition for the year at the Australian Pinnacle Dance Challenge. Beerwah High head of arts Jessica Rossberg said everyone at Beerwah State High School was incredibly proud of the dancers. “The early morning starts, lunch breaks, after school sessions and weekend rehearsals have certainly paid off for these passionate students,” she said. Caring for the Hinterland community for over 20 yrs

48 years fundraising to fight cancer By Helen Page It really is 48 years! Did you know that the Beerwah Charity Sports and Spring Carnival has been raising funds for the Cancer Council Queensland (formerly Queensland Cancer Fund) since 1971? With support from the Glasshouse Country community, the committee has kept this event going for all those years to help fund cancer research and patient support. All the old favourites are on the program again this year including horse sports, with events for all ages and a special miniature horse ring, show and shine for vehicles, athletics and novelties, Queensland’s strongest man and woman championship, photography competition, live music, talent quest Glasshouse Country’s Got Talent, tai chi demonstration, stalls selling produce, plants and home cooking, plus a variety of market stalls and displays. A favourite event is the Glasshouse Country dog jump, with $100 prize money on offer this year, so get your dogs in training. The kids’ entertainment tent is the meeting place for children’s activities where you will find the magician, face painter, balloon artist and hoola hoops. The very popular animal nursery is nearby. Thanks to Belinda and Sunshine Coast Party Ponies for providing the baby animals each year. The pet parade was back on the program last year by popular request but where were the pets?

From playful pup to seeing eye dog Community News Late last year Peter and Daphne Mundy welcomed a new addition into their family, a little labrador called Yoda. Yoda was just ten weeks old when he came to live with the Mundys through the Seeing Eye Dogs Australia puppy care program, a service provided by Vision Australia. The Mundys have spent the past ten months helping Yoda get ready to go on to further training in a few months as an assistance dog. Like anyone who has ever owned a puppy would know, they don’t come without their challenges (toilet training, chewing, etc) but for Peter and Daphne, who have been volunteer carers for a number of years, while it is a big commitment, the opportunity to possibly help someone’s quality of life in the future makes it all worthwhile. And they’re excited that Yoda will one day have the chance to help someone who is vision impaired. “We always wanted another dog and after seeing an article about puppy raising, we decided we wanted to do something worthwhile and get involved with Seeing Eye Dogs,” Daphne said. “We’re so glad we did and the support we’ve had through Tracey Bashford at Seeing Eye Dogs has been fantastic.” Yoda is their second Seeing Eye Dogs pup, with their first going on to a career keeping our country safe as an Australian Border Force drug sniffer dog. “It is a big commitment but we thoroughly enjoy the opportunity to potentially help someone and really make a difference in their life,” Peter said. Tracey Bashford is Seeing Eye Dogs Australia’s puppy development trainer for the Sunshine Coast

Peter and Daphne Mundy with Yoda (centre) and says they’re currently on the lookout for caring volunteers like Peter and Daphne. “Being a puppy carer is a wonderfully rewarding experience and an invaluable way to make a meaningful contribution to the lives of someone in need of a seeing eye dog,” Tracey said. The main role of puppy carers is to provide a loving home to nurture and socialise pups in everyday situations, and provide them with basic training skills. Carers take pups to a variety of places to help them socialise and familiarise them with different environments. The program requires carers to look after pups from around eight weeks old in their home until they are aged about 15 months. Regular support is available through Seeing Eye Dogs Australia and all costs are covered by Vision Australia, including food and vet bills. Vision Australia is the only national provider of seeing eye dogs in Australia, with the Sunshine Coast the only region in Queensland to offer the puppy caring program.

“We currently have pups that are ready to go to homes, with other litters ready to go throughout the year,” Tracey said. “Having a love for dogs is, of course, a must but it’s also important to understand that the program is about the greater good.” If you can’t commit as a full-time carer, Tracey says there are a variety of caring options available including six-month caring options and temporary foster homes for when a regular carer is away. Glass House Mountain’s Sharon Chapman began working with Seeing Eye Dogs Australia many years ago and is currently a foster carer for pups. She says working with Vision Australia and helping raise the pups to go on to further training is a wonderful life experience. “My grandma was vision impaired and volunteering with the purpose of helping others who are also vision impaired is such a rewarding experience,” Sharon said. She says the community also plays a large part in raising a seeing eye pup and she has had great community support over the years. Seeing Eyes Dogs Australia provides an essential service to the community through Vision Australia and is calling for volunteers interested in caring for future seeing eye dogs. Community News Evolution of the Maleny Music Festival By Sonia Clark This year marks the eighth year of this eclectic and inclusive family friendly event, which runs from Friday, August 30 to Sunday, September 1 at the Maleny Showgrounds. GC&M News thought it would be great to delve a little more into the background of the Maleny Music Festival with festival director Noel Gardner. Noel comes from a long and heartfelt involvement in the hinterland music scene. During the 1980s he was the organiser of the Nambour Folk Club, which was integral to the formation of the Maleny Folk Festival. This original festival ran from 1986 through to 1993 and that grassroots-inspired music festival still retains a fond nostalgic memory for many. The festival relocated to Woodford and became the genesis of today’s Woodford Folk Festival. In 2007 Noel moved to Maleny and the idea to reignite a small Maleny-based music festival was bandied about. Noel said he started to discuss the idea with friends but it wasn’t until 2009, when a friend suggested holding a camping weekend at the showgrounds in 2011 to coincide with the 25th anniversary of the first Maleny Folk Festival, that a new festival was spawned. “Our first festival offered camping, two stages and a workshop and session venue along with a poet’s breakfast and was a great success. The festival has now evolved to feature four stages, children’s festival, numerous food and market stalls, session tent, workshop venue, street performers, onsite camping and more,” Noel said.

This year the festival will have more than 250 volunteers to make it run smoothly and will feature more than 50 acts in nearly 120 performances over the three days of the event. Noel said that the acts were chosen from more than 250 applications. “I feel honoured on behalf of our team of volunteer organisers to present such an incredibly talented array of international, interstate and local performers. The festival does not receive government funding but relies on ticket sales, local support and the tireless efforts of our volunteer organisers who are dedicated to promoting the performing arts and giving back to the local community,” Noel said.

Glass House Mountains State School’s annual Chaplaincy Golf Classic will, for the fourth year running, be held at Beerwah Golf Club on September 6. The event, which is proudly brought to the community by the Glass House Mountains P&C committee, aims to raise much needed funds to support the school’s chaplaincy program. Pastor Aaron Jackson, from Church on the Rise Beerwah, says the school’s chaplain Tania Byers provides a valued support for students and families at the school, helping navigate through sometimes difficult times. “The chaplaincy program provides an important support to the students, particularly to those who are new, or are going through difficult times,” he said. “Chappy Tania helps support students through the challenges of life and runs a number of workshops and one-on-one support to help engage and offer a new perspective”. It is set to be a fun day out on the course following a four-ball Ambrose format over 18 holes. The event includes carts, golfing prizes and a presentation at the completion of the round with lunch and nibbles included. The day will conclude with a charity auction. Participants can register as an individual or team of four, and businesses can buy a sponsorship package, which includes exclusive rights for advertising material. The day kicks off at 10.45am for a shot gun start at 12noon. Club Glass House fishing comp raises record funds Windy conditions didn’t stop bites when it came to the 2019 Club Glass House fishing competition. Now in its 18th year, the annual event held over the weekend of August 9-11, with the generous support and help of local businesses, raised a whopping $9,275! Money raised will be donated directly to the Sunshine Coast University Hospital’s paediatric ward through the charity Wishlist, which Club Glass House has been supporting for the past seven years. Club manager Sharon Bochow said there were so many businesses and people to thank for the continued success of the day. “It was another great event and while the weather wasn’t the greatest, it was wonderful to see the smiles of those who attended,” Sharon said. “And seeing the support from local businesses in the area for the competition just goes to show what a great place we live in.”

The Heilig family from local business Go Turf donated a tinnie with five cartons of beer for the raffle, with tickets sold in the lead up to the competition, which alone raised $3,047. This year the presale of 160 of the event’s own fishing shirts, designed in house, raised another $1,000 for the charity. An extra fishing category was added to the competition this year, which made it nine categories of fish in total with $300 up for grabs in each category and another $1,000 in fishing reel prizes for the random runners up. In total, more than $8,000 in prizes were given away on the day. “Thank you to Barry, Lynne and Michelle Burgum for commentating and record keeping on the day and a special thank you to our weigh master and auctioneer, Danny Kowald, who raised $940 auctioning the winning fish,” Sharon said. The top prize, donated for the past 12 years by Cliff and Pam Andreassen, was won by Sam Wesley, who is set to enjoy a week’s holiday

Landscape Band Tour of Community Hal on Indian Head Fraser Island. Second prize, a full day charter generously donated by Flat Dog Charters, was won by Fiona Berka and Vance Neaves was the lucky third prize winner of an EvaKool cooler box. Morris House Community Centre is celebrating its 20th anniversary and inviting the community to come to a free morning tea/lunch from 10am-2pm on Thursday, August 29. All daily services that the community centre provides, including free internet and computer use, printing and phone use, tax help and emergency relief, will be going on as well as Orange Sky on site to assist with laundry needs including washing, drying and folding. As part of the celebration there will be as a sausage sizzle, fun for the kids, and tea and coffee. We’re an ageing population and the need to provide quality supportive care has never been more valued and important. If you are interested in a career in aged care, there’s no time like the present to get qualified and start making a difference for those in need. Caloundra Community Centre is offering eligible participants the opportunity to complete a Certificate III qualification in Individual Support (Ageing) at no cost. The program runs on Mondays and Tuesday from 9am–4pm for 11 weeks, followed by a three-week placement in an aged care facility, which provides an immersive learning experience for participants. The course is an opportunity for those interested in pursuing a career in health care and the social assistance industry, which is projected to have the highest employment growth of any industry in coming years. The program is available through Skilling Queenslanders for Work, a Queensland Government funded project that aims to support participants in finding sustainable employment. Community development worker Jody Blackburn said while placement for the course is in an aged care facility, the course also opens up opportunity in other areas of individualised support, including in home support and disability support. “The course also provides a great foundation to go on to further study.” Jody said the initial eligibility of participants would need to be confirmed and this was best done by contacting the centre directly. Classes will be held at the Beerwah CWA Hall and start on Monday, September 9. To formally acknowledge the club’s appreciation, vice president Lindsay Stewart recently presented Peta with a recognition award for her service to the youth of Maleny, especially through the Lions Club of Maleny Blackall Range. A puffy pink seaweed that can stop cows from burping out methane is being primed for mass farming by researchers from the University of the Sunshine Coast. USC seaweed research group leader Associate Professor Nick Paul said that if Australia could grow enough of the seaweed for every cow in Australia, the country could cut its greenhouse gas emissions by ten per cent. The particular seaweed species, called Asparagopsis, grows prolifically off the Queensland coast and was the only seaweed found to have the effect in a study five years ago led by CSIRO. “Seaweed is something that cows are known to eat. They will actually wander down to the beach and have a bit of a nibble,” Dr Paul said. “When added to cow feed at less than two per cent of the dry matter, this particular seaweed completely knocks out methane production. It contains chemicals that reduce the microbes in the cows’ stomachs that cause them to burp when they eat grass.” The USC team is working at the Bribie Island Research Centre in Moreton Bay to learn more about how to grow the seaweed species, with the goal of using the information to scale up production to supplement cow feed on a national or even global scale. “This seaweed has caused a lot of global interest and people around the world are working to make sure the cows are healthy, and the beef and the milk are good quality,” Dr Paul said. “That’s all happening right now. But the one missing step, the big thing that is going to make sure this works at a global scale, is to make sure we can produce the seaweed sustainably.” Project scientist Ana Wegner said the team’s challenge was to find the perfect growing conditions to move crops from the laboratory to large outdoor aquaculture tanks. “We know the chemical composition of Asparagopsis and we know the chemical compounds that actually reduce methane production in cows, so now we want to maximise the concentration of that chemical so we can use less seaweed for the same effect,” Ms Wegner said. Barung Landcare Fungi foray This alien-looking creature is Aseroe rubra, also known as the starfish fungus or anemone stinkhorn. It’s fairly common across eastern Australia and is also found in New Zealand and several islands in the Pacific. Aseroe rubra is a saprotrophic (decomposer) fungus found in wood mulch or rich soil. You’ll often spot it in parks and gardens. It was the first indigenous fungus to be described in Australia, collected in southern Tasmania in 1792. Aseroe rubra belongs to the family Phallaceae – the stinkhorns. The species in this fungal family can be phallic shaped, have a cage or netlike structure or radiating arms. Many are brightly coloured – yellows, pinks and reds. This particular stinkhorn grows from a whitish ‘egg’, developing 5–11 red bifid (deeply divided into two limbs) arms radiating from a central disc. In the centre of the disc is the olive-brown gleba or spore mass. The gleba has a foetid smell and attracts flies, which then distribute the spores. These recyclers are an important part of any healthy ecosystem breaking down organic matter and recycling valuable nutrients. Skate day held at the Mooloolah Recreation Ground on Saturday, August 10 was a huge hit with the local kids and parents. The last word on wallabies?

I read Richard Giles letter in the August 14 edition with some dismay. As a WILVO, I have had four calls to Crystal Waters to attend to a wallaby hit by car. In not one instance was the person who hit the wallaby the person who called (or perhaps wouldn’t admit it). The last was particularly heartbreaking as the male wallaby had a broken tibia and dislocated femur but was still mobile. Two kind people helped me corner it, catch it and administer a calming drug. It had to be euthanised. I was particularly disappointed that Richard mentioned no actions the people of Crystal Waters might take to stop the slaughter and even saddened by his claim that the “Sunshine Coast strip is worse”. What? As for the claim that “their approach” at Crystal Waters shows their support for wildlife – please tell me what you will be doing before I am called out again. Sammy Ringer WILVO #617 Maleny

Re: Wallaby/roo deaths unacceptable

I would like to make an amendment to my letter of August 7 in GC&M News. Where it reads "Not only did the mother die but so did her joey because nobody would stop to help her" what I meant to say is that the driver and subsequent drivers that morning did not stop and tend to the injured wallaby that, if given immediate attention, could have survived or at least the joey could have been saved. The fact remains that the driver of the vehicle that hit and injured the wallaby did not stop and offer immediate assistance, which consequently led to their death. So instead of "nobody" I should have said "no driver". The woman (our camp manager) who eventually found the injured wallaby at 9.30am was not in a vehicle, but on foot. Who knows how long the wallaby and joey had been left there but I've been told, judging by the condition of the animal and the blood on the road, it was quite a while - it was possibly hit the night before. I don't believe there weren't any cars driving past that morning on a weekday. It's very difficult to walk past an injured animal and do nothing but just because you are in a vehicle does not mean you can turn a blind eye to it. I want everyone to stop hiding behind the wheel of their vehicle and take responsibility. Ask yourself? What's more important, the life or death of an innocent animal or being late for work? It's all to do with priorities. As a result of this incident and several other wildlife deaths, I am organising a public meeting of all concerned residents and parties. A WILVOS representative will be invited to speak at the meeting about ways to educate drivers on how to tend to and care for an injured animal in an emergency as well as wildlife defensive driving. GC&M News recently put a call out for more information about a news story in the ‘Nambour Chronicle’ in August 1969 headed Cricket teams combine. We heard back from Terry Scholes of Beerwah who not only attended the meeting discussed in the newspaper article but was elected secretary. Terry was keen to share his memories from that time and also wanted to remind readers that as the event was 50 years ago, some of the names of the people involved and their contribution were a little hazy. He hopes that he won’t offend anyone by a possible omission.

“In the late 1960s cricket had stagnated a bit in our area. Landsborough had a reserve grade side, Beerwah had a B grade side and Glass House had no team at that stage but there were several Glass House cricketers playing for Landsborough and Beerwah. There were no junior teams as none of the towns had sufficient numbers to fill a particular age group. I believe that three local identities - Frank Freemantle, Harold Scholes and Laurie Smith - came up with initial ideas of amalgamating the senior sides to make a stronger reserve grade side with the hope of eventually making it to A grade as well as starting junior sides to eventually bolster the senior ranks. Initially there were some reservations about the three towns losing their individual identities. A meeting to discuss and accept the amalgamation was called, and Howard Walker was elected chairman of the new Southern District Cricket Club. Howard and many others, especially coachers/managers of the new junior teams, got the Southern District club under way. The club won its first reserve grade premiership in 1971-72 (pictured) and the next year achieved its goal of fielding an A grade side. My direct contact finished with the club when I moved away in 1974. However, I am aware of 14 senior and junior major or premierships wins since then until the club was disbanded in 1997. Apparently the idea had some merit.” Fortunately for GC&M News Terry, along with his wife Margaret and three daughters, moved back to Beerwah in 1994 so he could provide readers with the information about our cricketing history. Terry’s father Harold Scholes was a cricket lover who was secretary of the Landsborough club for about 10 years before the formation of Southern District and later was the president of the Maroochydore/Sunshine Coast Cricket Association for 10 years. Terry explained that while he still had an ongoing interest in local cricket his wife and daughter were heavily involved in netball.

Two sides of the coin

Recently our much loved black cat was hit by a vehicle in broad daylight and left to die like a piece of garbage by the side of Mary Cairncross Avenue. No, she wasn't native wildlife but she was a loving and loved creature who stayed close to home and was always kept in after 5pm. We are forever grateful to the two kind ladies who found her and took the time and trouble to take her to Maleny Vet Services in Coral Street. Otherwise, we might never have known what happened to her. Unfortunately, she couldn’t be saved but we will never forget their kindness and the efforts of the vets who tried to help her and took the time to track us down and tell us the sad news. We will never know why she was on that road, but for the actions of the ladies and the vets who helped her, you have our heartfelt thanks. Name supplied Maleny 22

Prep 2020 at Peachester

Peachester State School understands that preparing for prep in 2020 is both an exciting and daunting time for parents and children. The workshops focus on children aged two years and over who are experiencing difficulties with their bowel, including chronic constipation, withholding/refusal or soiling. The next Pondering Poos workshop will be held from 9.30am-12.30pm on Wednesday, September 4 at Currimundi State School, 17 Buderim Street, Currimundi. SCHHS occupational therapist Lauren Fitzpatrick said the workshop would provide information on normal bowel habits, causes of difficulties, medication, behavioural advice and dietary/fluid intake. “It lets parents know what is normal, when they should be concerned, why the issues arise and what to do about it,” she said. “Our workshops are not just for parents with children having toilet training difficulties. We often meet older children who may be aged nine or ten who are suffering from a wide range of bowel difficulties. We are here to help”. Science Week at Glasshouse Early Education Centre There was exploring, there was mess, there was fun but best of all there was learning! As part of celebrating National Science Week, from August 10–18, the children at Glasshouse Early Education Centre celebrated the week with science-focussed activities. Children in the junior and senior kindy rooms and the school readiness room thoroughly enjoyed learning about all things science, with a range of activities that encouraged age-appropriate learning. Field advisor for the north region, Elana Humphreys, said that science week was all about introducing the children to different areas of educational learning in the field of science, which is a major part of the STEM learning structure that the centre has a strong focus on. Children were encouraged to actively participate in science-related fun throughout the week, with a variety of activities set out to challenge and encourage learning and play. “All week the children were celebrating National Science Week with our educators introducing a range of activities, which had the children eager to explore different areas of interest,” Elana said. “From colours to dinosaurs to weather, this was a great opportunity for the children to explore things they weren’t familiar with and increase their knowledge.” For the junior kindy room, which is for children aged 2-3 years, colour exploring was the week’s theme and the children were excited to learn about different colours through various textural play.

It was all about dinosaurs for the senior kindy room children. The 3-4-year-old explorers delved into prehistoric wonder at the different types of dinosaurs and even helped make a volcano! Things got messy in the school readiness room with textured play. The children made goop, wondered and learned about amazing lava lamps, and explored clouds and rain thanks to fun with shaving cream. The STEM program follows the science, technology, engineering and mathematics curriculum, which is a focus throughout the children’s further schooling years. STEM encourages children to learn and explore the world around them with interactive and educational learning, and Glasshouse Early Education Centre strongly believes in incorporating this structure in the early years of learning. “Each classroom focusses on developmentally appropriate and stimulating activities and children are encouraged to take on new challenges and learn about new things,” Elana said. “Science week is a fun week for both the children and educators and it gives them a chance to explore new areas of interest.” Glasshouse Early Education Centre’s goal is to inspire delight, curiosity and inquiry in the classroom. Last Saturday the focus of the staff at Beerwah Kindy was all about the kindy’s parents and supporters who headed along to Club Glass House for the annual fun-packed barefoot bowls fundraiser. There were some rather unlikely looking bowlers out on the green but they did all seem quite determined to embrace the fun element of the event, which included a best dressed award on the day. The 12 teams of four all looked great and came up with some rather interesting team names, from the Farmer Wants a Wife, to the Coneheads and the Lemonade Ladies.

Doors open for open day The beautifully carved timber doors of the Maleny Community Centre were thrown open to the public last Saturday to showcase both the facility’s history and what happens there. The day featured tours and displays from the regular community groups that use the facility including the Maleny Arts Council, the Maleny Singers, the Maleny Seniors, Maleny CWA, Maleny Arts and Crafts Group and the Maleny Film Society. There was also a program of entertainment including performances by Brian Martin’s Maleny Choir, the Maleny High School band, Heartspace Dance and a performance by Colin Dunn and Margaret Taylor accompanied by Wendy Gleeson from Maleny Singers.

In the Garden Garden products to recycle Bags containing sugar cane mulch, potting mix, etc – These do not go into the yellow lid recycling bin. However, they can be put into one of the REDcycle bins now commonly found at supermarkets and shopping centres. Both the plastic and woven polypropylene type bags can be recycled but they need to be free of as much product as possible and cut into A3 sized pieces. Pots – When you buy the plant ask at the nursery if they take back the pots. Some nurseries reuse them. Or you can reuse them yourself. If they are in good condition, you can take them to a council resource recovery centre where they’ll rehome them through their recycle market. Seedling punnets – Best to reuse them as much as you can for growing your own seedlings from seed. Check the punnet and if it has the recycling triangle symbol with a number 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6 it should be OK to go into your council yellow lid bin. If you’re unsure, best to put it into the general waste bin. Seed packets – The paper packets are generally too small for the recycling stream to deal with but they can be put into your compost. The inner packets are plastic or have a plastic lining and so will have to go into the waste bin. Plant pot labels/tags – These are also too small to be captured in the recycling system and so can either be reused as a plant tag (paint them white and you can write on them) or put in the general waste bin. Green waste – This is a great resource for any gardener, so add it to your compost bin or worm farm. If you have no space, you can organise for a green waste bin from council – it’s very cheap and they collect it every

If, like us, you’re a fan of sharing your garden with native fauna, then here’s a few suggestions on providing habitat for our native animals. The bulk of plants used in mainstream native gardens are cultivar grevilleas, banksias and bottlebrushes. These are all amazing flowering plants that add colour, variety and are great nectar sources but if they are the dominant plants in your native garden aggressive birds such as rainbow lorikeets and the common (or noisy) miners will often dominate to the exclusion of more timid birds. Our tip here is to add different layers to your planting such as local native groundcovers and grasses, a diversity of local shrubs and trees, and bushier planting that give the smaller or timid birds somewhere to hide. Traditional responses to insect attacks in your garden is to spray an array of chemicals. However, the vast majority of our native birds will either eat insects if the opportunity arises or live wholly on insects. These insects, although appearing a nuisance to us, are crucial food for many of our feathered fauna. Learning to share your garden with our native fauna has many rewards, so join us in going wild this spring.

Garden hoses – These are not recyclable. If they’re in good condition, give them to someone else or take them to a council resource recovery centre. If they are damaged, put them in your waste bin.

Chemical containers (large), such as 20 litre drums – If they have the DrumMUSTER logo on the label, you can take them to a council resource recovery centre (locally Beerwah and Kenilworth) for free (make sure they are clean and triple rinsed first). Otherwise they have to be crushed and put into the normal waste stream. Black plastic and weed matting – As long as they’re not too degraded they can be recycled in the REDcycle bin found at supermarkets and shopping centres. Both the plastic and woven polypropylene types can be recycled but they need to be free of as much product as possible and cut into A3 sized pieces. Cardboard packaging – It can either go into the recycling bin or can be composted in your compost bin. Garden gloves – Gloves can’t be recycled and should go in the waste bin, although cotton and leather gloves can be composted. Bailing twine/string – All twine and string can be reused. You may need to tie them together to make longer pieces. Jute, paper, hessian or other nonplastic string can be composted. Plastic strings (like bailing twine) should be put into waste bin. Garden ties – These can’t be recycled but can be reused. Otherwise put them into the waste bin.

Sport Division 2 Bulldogs in the final Beerwah's Rugby League division 2 team has made the 2019 grand final to be played at Sunshine Coast Stadium this Saturday, August 24, with the kick off at 3.50pm. After taking out the minor premiership and a last minute 18-16 win against Coolum at home in the major semi-final, the team will make its second grand final appearance in the past four years. Sunday's game against Coolum was a nail biter. After trailing for most of the game by ten points, Beerwah managed a late try with two minutes to go and a sideline conversion by vice captain Tony Ainsworth, to the big crowd's delight, giving the team a spot in the grand final. Tony was also the division’s leading point scorer for

2019 and had an 84% strike rate. The side was ably led throughout the season by captain Jordan Bain. Throughout the season the team was extremely consistent and defensively was the benchmark team of the competition. They will play Coolum Colts in the grand final. Coach Mark Brandon said he was extremely proud of his squad getting to the big one, bearing in mind that in round four they were beaten by Caboolture 42-6, but lost only one game after that, which was a two point loss to Bribie Island. “This weekend’s game is a big day for the club, the team and their supporters. Hopefully they can bring home the premiership title, a title that this club has never collected,” Mark said.

Witta Tennis Contributed by Pauline Fraley Whistlers played at Witta against Ballinger Breezers. Nice weather for tennis and we had good tight sets. We didn't get enough games but we enjoyed the day. Score was 29-36 games, 3-6 sets. Team was Paula Cudmore, Brenda Warner, Donna Kuskopf and Aki Lepper. The Wildcats travelled to Eumundi to compete against division leaders the Echoes. Pauline Fraley, Annie Stewart, Libby Howlett and Jenie Riding did their best but couldn’t bring the win home. We’ll get them next time. Witta Wikings vs Witta Wompoos: Sunny skies on August 18 saw the battle of the two Witta teams in the

Sunshine Coast veterans competition. With a depleted Wikings team plagued by injuries, the inclusion of local players Noel George, John Poole and Mooloolaba veteran Syd Wakefield made the Wikings team very competitive against a strong Wompoos team. After some close tennis the Wompoos team of Anthony de Waard, Haydyn Craven, Andrew Blowes, Jim Cudmore, Donna Kuskoph and Paula Cudmore were victors to Wikings 10-2 sets, 65-37 games. Morning tea at 9am for a 9.30am start of play. The format is mixed fours, 21 ends with a lady to skip and men to play lead or second. The Range Croquet Club Contributed by Ken Barker We recently had a visitor from Japan, Arisa Imamori, who teamed up with Gillian Bradley on the Ted Singleton lawn (lawn two) to play three games of golf croquet against Sally Adams and Bev Sockhill. Arisa and Gillian won two games 7–6 with Sally and Bev winning the other very tight one as well by the same margin. It was a good competition. The attached photo shows Arisa and Gillian checking out Carl (the carpet snake) who returned to the shelter shed for the winter. Meanwhile on lawn one a game of association croquet was played by Ken Barker and Helen Andrews teaming up to beat Donna Manning and Kath Smith in another close encounter. On the weekend Ken played in the Hervey Bay tournament winning the second division championship against Wayne Lusk from Point Lookout club in the final, which was played under lights. The lawns, club hospitality and play were a delight. Just five dedicated players turned up on a chilly Sunday afternoon. Sarah Widin 16 played Vince Carbery 15. Sarah took her second bisque to make a very good break of seven. In the second game, Wallace Roy was successful against Stuart Craig, with a 10-4 score line. Many bisques were taken which, if used wisely, can be a great benefit to players. Coaching for beginners and others is available on the picturesque lawns at the bottom of the Maleny Showgrounds from 8-10am on Saturdays. These are popular sessions in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere.
