"These are fabulous results for the club and a great achievement for all the coaches, managers, committee members and players," Michaela said.

Local News Beerwah Lions roaring for 50 years By Lea Parkes Last Wednesday night the Beerwah Golf Club hosted the 50th anniversary of the Charter Dinner of the Beerwah Lions Club on September 2, 1967, held at the then Beerwah RSL Hall (now home to Church on the Rise). The Lions Club of Caloundra was the original sponsor of the Beerwah Club and fittingly there were a number of Caloundra Lions Club members at Beerwah for the celebration. The Beerwah Lions club is very proud of their one charter member who is still actively involved in the club today, Ron Boyle. Ron was given the honour of sharing some of the projects and success that the club has been involved in over the last half century. Some of their early projects included Youth of the Year, Miss Personality, Bikes for Narbethong (blind children), Rocky Creek Scouts Camp, and establishing the Beerwah Ambulance Station. They also sponsored the formation of both the Maleny Blackall Range Lions Club and the Kilcoy Lions Club, along with helping with the formation of the Lions Vigaro Club, the Bee Gees Soccer Club and the Glasshouse Country Senior Citizens Club. In 1976, then Lions President Laurie Bell and his committee ran a competition for a new name for the district which was how the name ‘Glasshouse Country’ came about. Ron explained that while quite a lot of entries came in for the name Glass

House Mountains District, the decision was made against this suggestion as it was focused on the one township. Long time Lion Bob Banner was also invited to share some of the lighter stories about the club’s history. One of his favourite memories was when the Ashton’s Circus came to town and they were performing on the grounds next door to the RSL Hall. A couple of the circus clowns dropped in to the meeting, bringing with them a baby lion, who was made welcome by the other ‘Lions’ at the meeting. Cr Rick Baberowski was the only guest to speak who wasn’t a Lion and he congratulated the group on the valuable and significant contribution to both the work of Lions as a service club and to our local community.

With an exceptionally dry winter continuing into spring, some Hinterland residents whose properties are not connected to the town water supply are experiencing lengthy delays for tank water refills as the commercial water carriers struggle to keep up with demand. As a result, last Friday Sunshine Coast Council advised that they will assist private property residents affected by water supply issues by providing extra access to council taps for domestic quantities of water across the region. Mayor Mark Jamieson said to assist affected homes, council will be providing tap and hose refilling points for residents seeking to fill portable water storage containers. Council will also be working in close partnership with Unitywater to try and establish more large quantity filling points across the region to assist commercial operators and to speed up water deliveries to our community. Any person experiencing extreme hardship due to lack of water supply should make their situation known to friends, family, neighbours, relatives or assistance agencies for support.

Quarry debate heats up The application by the Barro Group to expand the quarry (called Burrum Quarry) on the Beerburrum – Woodford Road at Beerburrum has come under detailed questioning from the local community, Sunshine Coast Council and the Department of Infrastructure, Planning and Local Government. Both the council and the State Government department made requests for greater detailed information on issues they felt needed a more thorough explanation than provided in the material change of use application. Council raised concerns on staging, visual amenity, the need for the quarry, the haulage route, traffic and engineering. The department sought clarification on road pavement impacts, groundwater impacts, noise levels, stormwater and assessable vegetation. The Barro Group has subsequently provided a raft of documentation answering the issues raised – all of which are publicly available through council’s development assessment portal (www.pdonline.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au and search for MCU16/0275). More recently, a community group has formed with the aim of stopping the quarry. The Beerburrum Action Group has coopted the help of Steve Dickson, Member for Buderim and the Queensland leader of the One Nation party and have started a petition to take the fight to Parliament. The online parliamentary petition (a link to which can be found on the group’s Facebook page) raises eight specific reasons why they oppose the

application. The Barro Group were approached by GC&M News and asked to respond to the community unease. Barro Group General Manager Ian Ridoutt said that they welcome the opportunity to provide information to the greater community. “The Barro Group is open to discussion and debate about all matters related to the project,” he said. In a written response to GC&M News, Mr Ridoutt answered each of the eight points from the petition. Below is a sample of what was provided. Community issue: Beerburrum Mountain is part of the heritage listed Glasshouse Mountains area, an important link to our nation's history as part of the Matthew Flinders Heritage Trail, and must be protected from destruction. Barro response: The inference that Burrum Quarry in some way will be responsible for the destruction of Mt Beerburrum is untrue. There should be no confusion that the Burrum Quarry site is in the middle of a commercial pine plantation and is not within the Burrum Mountain State Forest which is some distance away. Community issue: Beerburrum State School would face hazard and safety issues from 150 truck movements daily. Barro response: Beerburrum State School will face no hazard and safety issues from 150 truck movements daily, however it is the safe movement of children arriving and departing from the school that is of interest to Barro Group.

Beerburrum State School is a small school with about 160 students which is accessed from Beerburrum Road at the township. Currently without the quarry operating, on average a total of 4,838 vehicles, including 176 trucks, travel past the school each day along Beerburrum Road through the township. It is expected that if the quarry is approved, on average, an additional seven quarry trucks travelling in both directions will pass the school in the hour that children will be arriving and in the hour that children will be departing the school. Whilst the additional quarry trucks will only increase the current traffic by about 3%, Barro Group engaged traffic engineers to study the current infrastructure that is in place around the school to assist with providing a safe environment for the children when arriving and departing from the school. The report has been provided as part of the documents supplied to SCRC and is available for viewing by any interested party. Beerwah Bulldogs number 9, Sarah Walker, has been rewarded for effort with a place in the Jillaroos' first ever match against the Papua New Guinea Orchids in Port Moresby later this month. No transport for busload of students State Member for Caloundra Mark McArdle recently accepted a petition organised by concerned parents who want a local school bus service to be available for students of Maleny State High School living in parts of the Mooloolah Valley area. “Today I am accepting this petition which is about parents in Mooloolah who are asking for a safe, affordable and reliable transport option so their children can get to Maleny State High School. Parts of Mooloolah fall into Maleny SHS’s catchment area, requiring children to attend that school,” Mr McArdle said. “Currently students have access to a bus service between Landsborough Station and Maleny State High School, but for those living in the Mooloolah Valley area this means catching a train from Mooloolah Station and waiting up to 40 minutes at Landsborough Station for the connecting bus to school. “We have 120 parents who have signed this petition and they represent 43 students who are currently enrolled at Maleny State High School and an additional 97 children who are expected to attend the school in the next five years. That is more than a full bus who need this service." Petition organisers Lisa West and Rebecca Shepperson said that many parents have concerns about leaving their children, some as young as 11 years old, to wait at a public train station to catch their school bus.

We constantly worry about their safety,” Ms Shepperson said. Ms West said, “We are at the mercy of the public transport system which does not always line up with the charter bus service. Business News Landsborough businesses meet In July, State Member for Caloundra Mark McArdle met with representatives from Landsborough Hotel, BP, Landsborough Chemist, 3 Divas Café, IGA, Buck’s Bakery and the Landsborough School of Arts and Memorial Hall to discuss the need for a local-area commerce body. The meeting was sparked by a lack of community consultation surrounding the State Government’s proposal for a rail overpass. From that meeting, business owners in Landsborough have since met with the Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce President, Ursula Starkovsky, to discuss the next stage in creating a sub-committee to the chamber that would support the business interests of Landsborough. “In the discussion with the Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce President, it was agreed that people who operate businesses in Landsborough could join the chamber but the businesses would also collectively operate as a sub-committee to push for the needs of Landsborough,” Mr McArdle said. “No additional fees would be charged and they would retain the same rights and benefits of belonging to the chamber.” A meeting of all interested Landsborough businesses has been called for 10.30am on Wednesday September 27 at the Landsborough Memorial Hall to formalise the Landsborough body and kick things off. “The Landsborough Overpass proposal has been a catalyst issue for local business people to seek

When Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace recently conducted his bi-annual Fisher Small Business Roadtrip, during which he called in and spoke to business owners in six areas of his electorate, the issue of superannuation compliance was frequently raised. Andrew is pleased to advise local business owners that a few weeks ago the Government announced a package of reforms that will give the ATO near real-time visibility over superannuation compliance by employers. “One such reform will require superannuation funds to report contributions received more frequently, at least monthly, to the ATO, which will enable them to identify non-compliance and take prompt action,” Andrew said. “Another important change will see an improvement in the effectiveness of the ATO’s recovery powers, including strengthening director penalty notices and use of security bonds for high-risk employers, to ensure that unpaid superannuation is better collected by the ATO and paid to employees’ super accounts.”

By Lea Parkes A day of celebration was recently held in Landsborough as part of the 50 years since the naming of the Sunshine Coast. Community Development Officer Ana Greenfield did a great job in bringing together many of the local community groups to participate in a day that celebrated the community spirit in the town. The success of events such as these is much dependent on capturing the imagination, enthusiasm and passion of those who are happy to volunteer their time to create something that uniquely reflect the local community. Ana said, “I was so impressed with the number of groups that got behind the event including the Landsborough Hall, the Landsborough Hall Markets, the Landsborough Seventh-Day Adventist Church, and the Landsborough Museum who organised activities and threw open their doors to the community on the day.” She said the Landsborough School P&C did a fabulous job with their sausage sizzle, the

Charles Russell from the Seventh-Day Adventist Church said a real highlight for them was seeing the responses from the competition they ran asking people to share what they love about Landsborough. It was a pleasure to be involved in Loving Landsborough Day." Caroline from Caroline’s Knitted Art at the Landsborough Markets was really pleased that so many people took the time to both enter and vote in the 2017 Cosy-Beanie Challenge fundraiser. Caroline would also like to congratulate the winners and is keen to run the competition next winter once again, so keen knitters have plenty of time to prepare for the next challenge. While all of the community groups involved were really happy with the relationships and networks that the big event has allowed them to form, they are not yet thinking of making it an annual event, however they are keen to look at other collaborative opportunities in the future to bring the Landsborough community together.

We are ready to rekindle old friendships, and make some new friends along the course of the event and surrounding activities. We have all sorts of jobs to do: Looking after road closure barriers, guiding people to market stall sites, helping set up marquees, tables and chairs. Walking through the party chatting to guests is a great job – making sure they are safe, and know where to go. Some will help the music and stage organisers, others will help clear tables and make sure the rubbish goes into the correct bins. This is a great way to be involved with your community, have some fun, and stay at the party for a bit longer, so please become a volunteer. Bring a friend, a group of friends or make new ones along the way. We have jobs for all age groups, abilities and levels of energy. There are times available from early morning to late evening. Auditions for a trilogy of Christmas plays

It is almost that time of the year again and Christmas will soon be upon us!! The Maleny Players and Junior Players will be presenting three One Act Plays all with a Christmas theme. Auditions for the plays will take place for both adults and children on Saturday and Sunday, October 7 and 8 at the Playhouse from 2pm to 5pm. No stage experience is necessary; however, you will be required to be available for rehearsals. Suspicious fire at Beerwah Police are investigating a fire that occurred late last Thursday night in Beerwah. Emergency services were called at 11.45pm to Beerwah Brewin’ on the corner of Simpson Street and Peachester Road following reports of a fire. The fire was extinguished, but caused major damage to the interior and exterior of the business. Investigations to date suggest that the fire is suspicious, and police are appealing to anyone that may have any information which might assist to contact them. With the climate outlook for this coming summer looking like below normal rainfall, we thought it best to share our tree planting guide. Give the young trees a big loose pad of soil to get their roots out and down without competition from the grass. Water them in well with some added nutrition. Then cover the tree pad with cardboard to suppress grass and weeds. The cardboard protects the young tree from any toxins leeching from the new wood chip you put on top. As the cardboard breaks down, it releases carbon back into the soil and allows the fungal based compost from the wood chip to spread down into the tree roots where it is needed, all while keeping the soil at a steady cool temperature. You want need to water as often. After your tree is twice the size from the first day, you can start watering around the edges of the cardboard. To learn more about this method and much more.

True blue celebration of lawn The Australian Lawn Fanatics group celebrated the glorious start to Spring on Sunday, by attempting to set a Guinness World Record at a turf and landscape lovers event hosted by Go Turf at Beerburrum. Australian Lawn Fanatics member Rusty Garton said it was a great event with a sausage sizzle, a jumping castle and plenty of activities for the kids, as well as loads of turf related information, raffles and giveaways. The highlight of the day was the attempt to establish the record for the most push mowers being used at the same time, which saw 50 lawn enthusiasts take part and being filmed by a drone as proof. Now that the group have set the standard to beat with their first attempt, talk is turning to next year and how they can break the record. POLICE BEAT Fire safety - As I’m sure you are all aware, we have had an exceptionally dry winter and our usually green Sunshine Coast Hinterland is looking decidedly brown. Both the Queensland Police and our friends at the Queensland Fire and Emergency service urge everyone to be especially careful and pay attention to the warnings such as the total fire ban issued recently. In such dry conditions fires can easily start from a discarded cigarette or small sparks from machinery or a faulty electrical connection. We are asking all residents to be vigilant. If you see a fire report it, if you see suspicious behaviour report it. Make sure that you know what your options are if there is a fire in your area, think about what you will take with you and be prepared to leave if necessary. Forestry patrols - Beerwah Police will be out and about in the plantation and parks areas of our division more regularly on our trail and quad bikes. In an area like ours with such huge forestry areas, they are a great advantage. Being able to access the same areas as the other forestry users allows us to ensure that everyone is doing the right thing – that includes staying on formed roads and staying out of the closed areas, particularly where there has been recent clearing or preparation and replanting. Blue Light - I recently found out that the Beerwah Blue Light is the second biggest Blue Light in Queensland! How awesome is that? Our fourth and final Blue Light for the year is on November 10 and we are just starting to look at some dates for next year. We would really like any feedback we can get about how often you would like the events to be held. It’s great to get a good crowd every time and we don’t want to do so many that people get tired of coming, but we would like to do more if there is the interest out there. At the moment we are considering five or six events for next year. In October this year the Gympie region will celebrate their 150th anniversary. In 1867 a prospector named James Nash discovered gold in Gympie Creek, precipitating a spectacular gold rush that drew men from all over Australia. Office workers, shopkeepers, bankers, farmers and hopefuls turned their backs on their everyday occupations, hurriedly equipped themselves and set off on the long trek to the diggings. The Gympie gold rush led directly to the establishment of Bankfoot House in the Glass House Mountains. The Cobb & Co coach company let the Queensland government know that it would start a coach service between Brisbane and Gympie, if a road was built. Keen to reap the revenue that would flow into its coffers from development of the Gympie field, the government said yes and contracted Tom Petrie to blaze the line. Petrie took with him Hiram Barnes, former driver and road manager for Cobb & Co, to ensure the alignment of the road was suitable for coach travel. The ‘road’ that later wound around trees and forded creeks was no more than a rough bush track. At the time, William Grigor was a wily Scot working as a timber-getter in the Mooloolah area. The coach service was expected to begin in late 1868. Knowing coaches needed food for passengers and horse-changing facilities at approximately 12 mile stages, Grigor selected land for a staging post and accommodation house near the ‘Glass Mountains’. William and his wife, Mary, built Bankfoot House in 1868, naming it after Mary’s home village of Bankfoot in Scotland. The site they chose was on a flat-topped rise just north of Coonowrin Creek, roughly halfway between the ‘Cabulture’ River and Edmund Lander’s homestead on the Mooloolah River (today’s town of Mooloolah). The panoramic view of the Glass Mountains and the fresh water available from Coonowrin Creek, especially for the horses, were no doubt considerations in the siting of Bankfoot House. The Friends of Bankfoot House acknowledge the significance of the gold discovery on the development of the Glass House Mountains and congratulate Gympie on its exciting anniversary.

The Beerwah High School performing arts block was awash with colour as the dancers from Masterpiece Dance took to the stage on Saturday September 9 for their annual dance concert, The ABCs of Dance. From the tutu-clad Tiny Twirlers to the moving contemporary dancers, the students danced their

way through the alphabet in front of a spellbound audience. This was the third concert for Masterpiece Dance which has been operating out of the Glasshouse Christian College Dance Studio since 2015 and offers classes in ballet, jazz, hip hop and contemporary dance.

Contributed by Jodie Buemi The Glenview Independent Public School recently celebrated its annual Italian Day which was a fun filled event during which the students enjoyed the experience of participating in a range of Italian inspired activities throughout the day. This year was ‘La Palio’, a famous horse race held in Sienna. Children were asked to make a horse to enter in the race. Creativity ran wild, with so many amazing equines turning out for the race. The day included taste testing of Italian delicacies, gelato eating, flag throwing, a long table Italian lunch and a magic show! Both parents and students look forward to this day every year and the day continues to grow to keep everyone engaged. The long table lunch in the ‘Trattoria’ is a firm favourite, with lunch being served to over 230 happy customers.

Contributed by Sally Joyce Outdoor Classroom Day is a global campaign to celebrate and inspire outdoor learning and play. This year Peachester State School classes participated in a number of ways with Prep/Year 1 planting ginger as an extension of their recent visit to the Ginger Factory and they took a maths lesson outside using tally marks to find how many flowers in our school will attract bees. Our 1/2 class went on a Mini Excursion to the Peachester Hall and the Peachester Church buildings to explore our local history. They finished their procedural text by creating a no dig garden and had story time in the outdoor classroom reading ‘Big Smelly Bear’. Year 3/4 had Circle Time and planted seedlings and mulched our school garden and Year 5/6 went on a Scavenger Hunt to find producers, consumers and decomposers Hayden T, Cameron T and outdoors and prepped our garden beds before Jayden G showing grea t the holidays. teamwork

Koala Action Inc is extremely concerned, as are many other wildlife and/or environmental groups, about the rate of land clearing and fragmentation of bush land which has more than tripled following the weakening of regulations and enforcement by the Newman Government in 2012. The Wilderness Society and Australian Conservation Foundation statistics confirm that an area the size of the MCG is cleared every three minutes in Queensland alone – surely we can all see that this is an environmental crisis. Deforestation and land clearing is a major threat to biodiversity and that holds true for Queensland’s faunal emblem the koala, now on the brink of extinction in many areas of the Moreton Bay region. All of us can choose to be part of the problem or be part of the solution. All that is required is for each and every one of us to write to, email or telephone our local councillors as well as our state and federal government representatives, and ask them to use whatever existing powers that are available to stop the worst land clearing. We need to ask them to bring in new laws as soon as possible to end deforestation and excessive land clearing, to be part of developing a binding national climate plan, including all state and territory governments that ensures measurable reductions in land clearing, and to invest in a nationally consistent monitoring program and reporting of land clearing across the country. This makes sense to me and I am sure will make sense to those of us on the ground volunteering to ensure that our native fauna and flora continue gracing us with their presence. Marriage equality, a parent’s perspective

My son is gay and has been recently married to his partner at the British High Commission residence in Canberra. We have known our son is gay for many years, and at first it was difficult to come to terms with. He is a loving, caring son, thoughtful and considerate. My wife and I are proud of him as a person, and as a creative and compassionate human being. We all need to understand that this postal vote is not just about legalising same sex marriage in Australia, it is about recognising same sex couples that are married and their legal entitlements on an international basis whilst visiting this country. Recently a same sex couple were holidaying in Adelaide and sadly there was a fatal accident involving one of the men. More than 760 million people now live in countries where same-sex marriage is legal, including The Netherlands, Belgium, Spain and Canada, South Africa, Norway and Sweden, Portugal, Iceland and Argentina, Denmark, France, Brazil, Uruguay and New Zealand, Ireland, United States and Luxemburg, Colombia and Greenland, Finland and Slovenia, and it is currently pending in Germany and Taiwan. Same-sex marriage and adoption was legalised in Germany in 2017 after a snap vote by MPs, and will become law later this year. Why haven’t we learnt from these other civilised countries? Now that we have the opportunity to voice our preference in this issue, I would like to share a wellpublicised quote from Sir Elton John. “It isn't just about marriage, and it isn't just about the gay community, it's about the need for all people, everywhere, to have the same rights and protections under the law. It's about the need for all people, everywhere, to be treated with compassion and dignity.” A ‘yes’ vote will see Australia join the twenty-five countries that have since 2001 voted to legalise marriage equality. Land clearing

Re: Gillian Pechey’s letter (GC&M News September 6), I support fair and sensible legislation to protect rare, endangered and other native vegetation from destruction but the bill put to Queensland Parliament last year was not in any way fair or reasonable. When a landholder purchases land for primary production, he expects to comply with laws aimed at the protection of some of the existing native vegetation, but what Labor proposes is that he should allow regrowth to revegetate his land unchecked, thereby losing the right to cultivate or graze land he bought and pays rates on. If the landholder tries to retain the productive land he purchased by removing regrowth, he will be charged with destruction of protected plants. When the Labor Government wants landholders to protect state owned plants and animals on private

land for the benefit of the whole population, they should compensate landholders for the service they are forced to provide to the state; placating all plant and animal lovers who know the government is not providing sufficient protection of wildlife in National Parks and reserves. The government has responsibility to protect the various habitats in National Parks, preserving plant and animal species and providing for recreational needs of the Australian and touring population. But the ALP Government is legislating to force private landholders to unfairly carry the government’s responsibility for the protection of vegetation. Furthermore, the proposed legislation is absolutely extreme; if charges of illegal clearing were made, no matter how baseless, the landholders are treated as guilty until they can produce proof of innocence. Support for Humanitarian Projects International

Ted Prickett of Peachester is a member of the local Anglican Church who is very proud of the work that was recently undertaken by members from their Caloundra Parish, Julie and Terry Gaughan, in Uganda. They have been working as part of Humanitarian Projects International (HPI), and Ted asked GC&M News to share some of their story. HPI is a fully accredited, non-denominational, Australian not-for-profit charity, based in Caloundra. It operates by sending teams of caring volunteer workers wherever needed to relieve poverty and distress, thereby giving hope and a future to orphans and other underprivileged people of the world. In June, Julie and Terry travelled to Uganda to see firsthand the improvements made to the St Charles Lwanga Medical Clinic, three classrooms at Nyaruntooma Primary School, and to see work commence on the renovations to St Paul’s Community Church across the road from the primary school. The completion of these projects was achieved through the fundraising efforts of HPI and they are now working towards the next stage of the project, which involves renovation of another four classrooms at the school. While Ted and his wife Eunice have been unable to travel to Uganda to become personally involved in the project, Eunice has been busy knitting snuggle rugs and crocheting beanies for use by HPI in their support of orphanages – and she has made around 270 items. The number of Australians owning their own home (both with and without a mortgage) has declined slightly over the past five years, the most recent Census data shows. At the same time, the number of us renting has increased slightly. Currently, 30.9 per cent of Australians are renting, up from 29.6 per cent in 2011. It’s easy to look at these figures and property values around the country (especially in places like Sydney where the median value is well over $1 million), and consider renting a more economical option. But there are so many benefits to owning your own home that renting cannot provide. Here’s why you should consider putting your hard-earned savings towards a deposit instead. 18

1. You have more flexibility to do what you want. Want to redo your kitchen floors? Renovate the bathroom? Convert the garage into a granny flat? If you’re renting, these things are either not possible – or require negotiating with your landlord to get their approval. All the decisions are in their hands, not yours. When you own your own home, you call the shots – plus any home improvements you make will be increasing your equity. 2. Your money is going towards an asset.When you rent, your money is going to your landlord. When you make mortgage repayments on a principal-andinterest loan, you’re paying off some of the value of your home, not someone else’s mortgage!

Volunteers required for heart disease trial Sunshine Coast volunteers are needed for a cutting-edge trial which will reveal whether they have very early signs of heart disease. Volunteers can be men or women who are aged between 40 and 70 with no diagnosed heart disease and who are not already on cholesterol lowering medication. The study uses advanced technology to determine participants’ risk of developing heart disease and to compare two approaches to managing their care. Volunteers have a CT scan to obtain their coronary calcium score and depending on their result, they may also then undergo a CT coronary angiogram. The tests are provided free-of-charge to trial participants, and would normally cost more than

$500 and are not currently covered by Medicare. Early detection and management play a critical role in preserving and maintaining heart health. Taoist Tai Chi is much more than an exercise in Western terms. The 108 moves of the sequence, learned initially as a series of external movements in the beginner course, can extend deeper and deeper into the entire body through continued practice and development at continuing classes and workshops. The recent Vintage Calendar Girls 2018 Gala Calendar Launch at the Maleny Manor featured performances by the Kitty-Kats and was MCd by HOT 91 presenter Sam Coward. The Vintage Calendar Girls is a charity founded by local woman, Misty Bland, whose husband was diagnosed with a rare cancer, and it aims to raise funds for local families battling similar rare and sometimes inoperable cancers. School celebrates

The Caboolture Montesorri School’s ‘Amazing Space’ was recently officially opened by Senator James McGrath with the day being one of celebration for the whole school. Movies After the Storm

The Maleny Film Society will screen 'After the Storm', a family drama of "bittersweet regrets and acceptance of life’s disappointments", this Saturday, September 23, at 7.15pm at the Maleny Community Centre. The protagonist Shinoda once wrote a prize-winning novel, but has been unable to produce anything of merit since and is now earning a living as a private detective, struggling to meet child support payments for his young son, and spying on his ex-wife who has a new beau. With a gambling habit, and having moved in with his recently bereaved elderly mother, he wallows somewhat in self-pity, and yearns for his old life with his wife and son, attempting to make a connection with the boy. Beautifully filmed with a deft touch and gentle humour, the director Koreeda reminds us that "nothing is more important than the moment you are currently in", especially when that moment is with your children. Ticket prices for non-members are adult $13, students (with ID) $8 and children under 16 $5, and tickets can be purchased at the door. Doors open 6pm and dinner will be catered by Lumbini.

Environment action meeting

The Minister for Environment and Heritage Protection, Steven Miles, will address an environment community action meeting in Maleny this Saturday. To be held at the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre, the community action meeting will address the urgent need for strong, sensible vegetation management laws in Queensland. “Recent scientific reports have laid bare the terrible effects of rampant tree clearing throughout Queensland,” said Labor candidate for Glass House, Brent Hampstead. “This face to face community meeting with Minister Miles gives locals an opportunity to not only hear Labor’s plans for stronger environmental safeguards, but also voice their own concerns about the future of our state’s environment.” The event will be held from 4pm, Saturday September 23, at Maleny Neighbourhood Centre, Bicentenary Lane, Maleny.

The annual Kenilworth ArtsFest Exhibition is on this Queen’s Birthday long weekend, from Friday September 29 to Monday October 2, upstairs at the Kenilworth Hall. Kenilworth ArtsFest is an annual competitive art exhibition showcasing paintings, sculpture, ceramics and poetry by artists from the Sunshine Coast and Hinterland. In the hall’s foyer there will be a photographic exhibition entitled ‘Then & Now’ by Birgit Kehr. The display will include photographs taken 50 years ago, which have been borrowed from the Kenilworth Historical Society and will be featured with photographs taken in 2017 of the original locations taken in 1967. Delicious wattle seeds Wattle seeds are an incredibly versatile and nutritious bushfood ingredient. Harvested from over 120 species of Acacia throughout Australia, these small seeds provided Indigenous Australians with a very rich source of protein and carbohydrates for thousands of years. Acacias are an enormously diverse group of plants, represented in all areas across our continent. Not all are suitable for consumption however, and some are more palatable than others. Wild harvest of species such as Acacia vitoriae, A. sophorae, A. murrayana and A. aneura is possible due to healthy populations. Acacia retinodes has been planted in large commercial plots for the bushfood industry. Now widely available for the home cook, wattle seeds are a tasty addition to your pantry. When dark roasted it smells glorious – of coffee and chocolate with hints of spice and raisins. They can be used in sweets like cheesecake, combined with chocolate or added to scones, damper or bread. Wattle seed is also great as a thickener for sauces. Nutritionally, wattle seeds contain lots of protein, high amounts of potassium, calcium, iron and zinc. They also have a low glycaemic index. At our next Wildfood Saturday event on Saturday September 30 we will be exploring this delicious bushfood (in particular with a chocolate mud cake recipe). This year the Glasshouse Country Orchid Society’s 2017 orchid show will provide a welcome burst of colour in what has been a harsh Spring for the Hinterland. On Friday and Saturday, September 22 and 23, the Beerwah Hall (next to the Library) will be a mass of variety, colour and perfume with hundreds of orchids, as the orchid clubs of the Sunshine Coast region join with Glasshouse to showcase their passion. As well as the award winning displays, there’ll also be wonderful floral art creations, displays and demonstrations. There’ll be talks on various aspects of growing, so you can pick up helpful hints; plant sales where you can ask for advice on what to buy and how to grow it; you can stock up on pots, growing media and accessories. Or you can simply meet with friends to share the experience, and then chat over morning or afternoon tea, or a light lunch on the deck. You’ll also be able to try your luck with the raffle, and buy colourful floral arrangements to take home. A visit to Glasshouse’s annual Spring Show is a really great way to raise the spirits. Spring has sprung, and although it’s been dry so far, it will be raining any day now (cross-fingers!). Spring flowering started early in July and continues in a colourful flow that brightens gardens and bushlands alike. Blooming now and for a while to come are paper daisies, hibiscus, grevillea, bottle brushes, Lomandra, Ti-tree. Scented surprises include Lomandra hystrix and Slender Yam, both highly perfumed at present. Lizards and snakes are out and about with the warmer weather, so make sure there are places for them to hide and get away from you and bigger predators. Rocks and logs can be great landscape features and provide refuge for small fauna. Natural leaf litter/mulch is also invaluable for providing soil and habitat, so plant away to create your own self-sustaining habitat garden. It’s always a good time to be planting, if you’ve got water on tap, just mulch, mulch and mulch to keep your plants moist and growing, providing habitat for wildlife, beauty and shade. Dogwood Jacksonia scoparia Dogwood is a small, twiggy, leafless shrub growing to approximately three metres. Grey green in colour, this shrub can be found growing on deep sandy or rocky soils from south eastern New South Wales, through to central Queensland. The leaves are reduced to small scales similar to those of an Allocasuarina for which it can sometimes be mistaken. This is a very attractive plant with masses of orange/yellow pea flowers in late winter to early spring. In older specimens the bark of the shrub becomes furrowed and branches can droop, especially if heavy with bloom. The seed pods are covered with silky hairs, and are tiny and flat, which makes it difficult to obtain seed. Jacksonia are a butterfly food plant, and flowers are an important source of pollen for bees.

Noticeboard Spring Ball success

The Spring Ball held at Glass House Mountains on Saturday September 2 as part of the recent Festival of Community Halls was very successful, with everyone who attended getting into the spirit of the evening in their best suits and ball gowns. The hall was decorated with streamers and balloons, along with a Springthemed entrance piece courtesy of the very creative Janelle Steensen. With dancers coming from the north, south, east and west of Glass House Mountains, and the regular locals, an enjoyable evening of dancing was had by all who attended. As part of the celebration of Father’s Day, several young people from Landsborough Seventh-day Adventist Community Church door-knocked the local area. Contributed by Ken Barker Sunday saw a visit from Peter and Miggy Mackey. Miggy beat Kath Smith 13 -10 and Peter tied 12 all with a team consisting of Sally Adams and Vince Carbery. Thursday was spectacularly windy with Ken Barker and Vince Carbery being the only players foolish enough to brave the elements and the resultant play was appropriately erratic. At one stage when Ken was stalking a ball he was blown off line. Croquet is one of the few activities, and the only one that I know of, other than big game hunting, where stalking is not only permitted, but actively encouraged. Ken was the eventual winner of this game 15 - 8. Remember the Fitchen Trophy is to be played this Saturday, all players concerned are reminded to do their duty – no quarter is to be given and no prisoners taken. Our Friendship Day is this Thursday, September 21, which will see a variety of activities with players from other clubs being there. Club play days are Thursday and Sunday at 1pm for 1.30pm. Maleny Golf Club remains on track to have 12 holes in play early next year following completion of bulk earthworks and installation of irrigation on the next three holes. David Burrup Golf Course and Sports Turf Designs was contracted to undertake the earthworks construction, which was completed in just 16 days during August. Club President Max Whitten said installation of the irrigation system was now well advanced in preparation for stolonising the new greens in conjunction with the next greens renovation scheduled in late October. “The club has also received council approval to construct a modern maintenance facility to maintain the course at a very high standard and work on this building is also now getting underway,” Dr Whitten said. He said in addition to a Queensland Government grant of $100,000, Sunshine Coast Council had budgeted to provide $450,000 over the next two financial years towards the design, construction and establishment of stage two of the Maleny golf course to expand it from 9 to 18 holes. “We have received support from both the state and local government as well as an enormous amount of support from local volunteers and our plan is to complete the final six holes in 2018. “We have no doubt that once the Graham Papworth-designed course is completed, it will be one of the best community golf courses on the Sunshine Coast.”

Roger Garner (also 69) took out B grade by a shot from Headland visitor Ross Carvell. In C grade Rosco Palmer shot the round of the day, 67, to beat Mark O'Brien by two shots. The final result was a convincing 67/44 (9 sets - 3 sets) win to Yandina and while the Wonders were towelled on the scoreboard, the afternoon’s tennis was closer than it appears. We managed to lose 3 tie breakers which included sets where we held 5/1 game advantages, a salutary reminder that it’s never over til it’s over. A couple of cracker sets saw Jani and Frank going down in a tie break set to Mick Craig and Scott Somerville. Thanks also to Jane, Leigh Anne and Sean who gave it their all on the day. Wagtails played against Maleny Magics. Even though we did not win on the day we had fun and that’s what tennis is all about. Thanks to team members, Eunice, Suzie, Gerry and Claire. The Whistlers played at Mooloolaba against the Legends. It was great weather for tennis, no wind and the tennis was good. Lots of great rallies as usual. It was very close but we managed to bring home the win. Score was 4031 games, 4-4 sets. Team was Donna Kuskopf, Aki Lepper, Liz Mellish and Brenda Warner. The Wildcats were at home to Coolum Tourists and thankfully no wind. Pauline, Stacey, Jenie and Anne were too strong and defeated the Tourists 5-3 sets, 42-28 games. Well done team.
