Hi Everyone... I often hear people complaining about the rate that time flies, but sometimes in this job it is even harder to stay focused on the here and now. In last week’s edition we included one of our regular Seniors features, so my mind was full of ideas and thoughts about ‘almost being’ a senior (yes, I am still holding on to middle age very tightly). Whereas this past week has seen my mind do a rapid shift of focus, to the life of kids – well, local kids – as we have included a Hinterland Kids feature, just in time for the school holidays. I have to say I am slightly jealous of all of the options for activities that they have on offer across the June/July holidays, especially the range of great activities this year’s Celebration of Books in Maleny has on offer for local kids. As a kid I was an avid reader, I loved everything about books! Aaah, to be young enough again that I could go to a pyjama party/book launch at the Maleny Library, instead of thinking about the delights of an I Age Well Seniors Expo!

Local News Bumper strawberry season ahead While the rest of Australia is gearing up for what’s predicted to be the coldest winter on record, strawberry growers in Queensland are welcoming the cool change, with promising signs of a bumper crop this season. Consumers can also rejoice as the large yield usually leads to cheaper fruit prices. Strawberry runners (baby plants) are planted in early March and usually take eight weeks to grow, however due to the unseasonably early arrival of cooler weather, Queensland strawberries are predicted to produce high-quality fruit two to three weeks earlier than usual. The fruit is normally handpicked two times a week but bumper crops allow farmers to have enough strawberries for three pickings a week. Ashbern Farms produces strawberries all year round and is co-owned and run by Jon and Bernadine Carmichael, and former employee Brendon Hoyle. The Carmichael family has been growing strawberries in South-East Queensland for over 40 years and has experience in building a successful strawberry farm and tourist attraction called Strawberry Fields. After branching out from the family farm, Jon now jointly owns and operates two farm sites – Stanthorpe Farm, which opens from October to May, where tourists and locals experience picking their own strawberries during the summer, and Glass House Mountains Farm, which focuses on the winter production of organic and commercial strawberries.

Queensland strawberries can be divided into two categories – the soft skinned Aussie Gem and Ruby Gem variety, which need to be picked early in the morning when it is still cold, and the firm skinned variant, which includes Festival, Splendour, and the new Red Rhapsody, which is on the market after four years in development by the Queensland Department of Agriculture and Fisheries. The crops thrive in autumn weather, which usually has cool, dry night and plenty of sunshine with little rainfall during the day. The cool nights produce sweeter fruit and farmers rely on the native bees population to boost the pollination process during the warm, dry daytime.

The 30th June Is Fast Approaching!

We are almost through another Financial year and this means that you need to think about the things you can do before 30 June for tax.  Work out if you made a profit - If you are in business, work out if your sales were more than your business expenses for the year. Remember that some payments like loan repayments and personal expenses don’t count. You need to look at the things that you paid for the business only (rent, advertising, bank interest, tools and materials) and work out the difference between sales and those expenses.  Find other expenses - Hopefully you have kept all your receipts so that you can maximise deductions. Think about travel costs, work specific clothing, training courses, union fees and trade magazines and other costs that are needed for your industry.  Make business purchases - The ATO are still running the $20,000 instant asset write-off for business owners. You can spend $20,000 on an asset you will use in your business (vehicle, computers tools and machinery) and this will save tax. You can also put money into superannuation, but this must be done before 30 June! Lastly, your donations to registered charities may reduce tax.  Lodge on time - Individual returns must be lodged before 31 October 2018. Company and Trust returns have more time to lodge.  Avoid the ATO Hit List - We are seeing lots of audits from the ATO for incorrect expense claims. The ATO now compares your income tax return to other people in your industry and follows up any large claims. On the hit list are: • motor vehicle expenses • accommodation and travel to work expenses • excessive home office internet and telephone expenses We can help you work out what is reasonable to claim so that you are less likely to get a tap on the shoulder from the ATO.

State Budget in brief The Queensland Government passed their budget last week, with Treasurer Jackie Trad describing it as being about “…delivering. We are delivering the infrastructure, skills and services that equip us to manage growth and navigate the changing economy.” And with Queensland being one of the fastest growing states – and the Sunshine Coast being one of the fastest growing regions in Queensland – there needs to be a lot delivered just to keep up. “Delivering infrastructure allows us to keep pace with population growth and accommodate more people without compromising our quality of life,” said Minister Trad. “But it also means more jobs now in construction and more jobs in the future as better infrastructure is the foundation for a strong economy. “That’s why the 2018-19 Budget, the Palaszczuk Government’s fourth, invests almost $45.8 billion in infrastructure over four years.” According to the budget documents, the Government will also be investing $14.1 billion in education, $17.3 billion in health services, $5.6 billion in lowering the cost of living, $1.3 billion in child and family services, $3.5 billion in community safety and $330 million for the Great Barrier Reef. “This is a Budget for the future: delivering the infrastructure, skills and services that will help us to manage growth and ensure we can all share in future prosperity,” Minister Trad said. “It’s a Budget for all Queenslanders. Five million strong and growing.”

At the local level, spending has been identified to include: • $160.8 million towards the Beerburrum to Nambour rail duplication project with construction to be delivered in stages based on further negotiations with the Australian Government. The Australian Government has provided an initial $390 million over five years towards this project. • $15 million to support the Sunshine Coast Council progress their new international broadband submarine telecommunications cable project. • $500,000 in 2018-19 out of a $900,000 total spend for the Daniel Morecombe Foundation to construct a counselling centre at Palmwoods. • $450,000 in 2018-19 out of a $535,000 total spend to rebuild the Bundaroo bridge in the Conondale National Park. • $7 million in 2018-19 to redevelop the University of the Sunshine Coast Stadium and Sunshine Coast Lightning headquarters. • $200 million in 2018-19 out of an $812.9 million total spend to widen the Bruce Highway (from Caloundra Road to Sunshine Motorway) from four to six lanes, due for completion in June 2020. • $1 million in 2018-19 out of a $3 million total spend to construct a new fire and emergencies services facility at Maleny. • $1.8 million in 2018-19 out of a $4 million total spend towards an infrastructure upgrade of facilities at Woodfordia, the site of the Woodford Folk Festival.

• $1.6 million in 2018-19 out of a $3 million total spend to upgrade and replace visitor and recreation facilities in Glass House Mountains National Park. • Funds have also been allocated from the Roads Renewal Fund to install traffic lights and slip lanes at the intersection of Peachester Road and Old Gympie Road outside the Beerwah State School. • $5.9 million in 2018-19 out of a $17 million total spend for Caloundra Health Service refurbishment to include a new minor injury and illness clinic, and refurbishments for the provision of palliative care, eye health, child health and other services. Local LNP opposition MPs Mark McArdle and Andrew Powell have not reacted approvingly, among other things calling the budget announcements measly, a disappointment, crumbs, a sick joke, halfbaked, a slap in the face, and a debacle. Mr Powell took aim at the railway funding. “The Palaszczuk Government has claimed that their measly $160 million commitment toward the Beerburrum to Nambour rail upgrade qualified as ‘delivering’ for the Sunshine Coast. The only thing it has delivered is disappointment,” stated Mr Powell. Mr McArdle highlighted non-delivery on promises involving slip lanes on the Nicklin Way, Mooloolah Community Centre not obtaining a long-term lease/ freehold title, and the minimal and insufficient funds for the Sunshine Coast rail duplication. “Despite her claim that in essence she is here for all Queenslanders, the awful truth is the budget doesn’t back that up,” Mr McArdle said.

Memorial for Matthew Flinders Sunshine Coast representatives at State, Federal and Local Government levels joined together last week to call for ideas from the public for a new memorial to Matthew Flinders in the Hinterland following recognition that the only existing memorial is under threat. Matthew Flinders undertook the first known inland exploration of the iconic Glass House Mountains by a European and is currently memorialised by the Matthew Flinders Park near Beerburrum. However, local volunteer, author and researcher Ivon Northage has identified that the current memorial would be cut in two by the duplication of the North Coast Rail. Last week he called together Federal and State Members of Parliament, the local councillor, representatives from the Department of Transport and Main Roads, and the Sunshine Coast Council to ensure Flinders’ endeavours continue to be shared with locals and tourists alike. Mr Northage, the author of ‘The National Heritage Listed Glass House Mountains’, said Flinders mapped the six most northern islands of Glass House Bay (now known as Moreton Bay), before putting in on the western shore of Pumicestone Passage to repair a leaking plank. “Flinders, along with his indigenous guide Bongaree and two seamen, set off to explore the Glass House Mountains,” he said. They climbed Mt Beerburrum, and camped on the banks of Tibrogargan Creek. Matthew Flinders Park acknowledges that he camped nearby and Mr Northage said it’s important we continue to celebrate

Mr Wallace said: “All of us want this project to encapsulate the importance that local residents themselves place on Matthew Flinders’ explorations and to reflect how they want his contribution to be remembered. Council to change planning scheme and create more housing estates Locals have been rallying recently against a number of development applications which, although they may broadly be consistent with the Sunshine Coast Planning Scheme, they have considered as not being reflective of contemporary community concerns, needs and expectations. The petrol station proposal opposite the Maleny State School and the intensive urban residential development at the gateway to the historic town of Landsborough are two which spring to mind. Amidst a swelling call for changes to be made to the planning scheme to better embody these sentiments, Sunshine Coast Council’s message has consistently been that this isn’t easily done. However, it appears that it can be done… if it means opening up more rural lands for more intensive uses. Council recently placed a public notice in a Sunshine Coast newspaper advising those who found it that plans are afoot to rezone 57 blocks of land across the Hinterland townships of Mapleton, Montville, Glenview, Beerwah, Glass House Mountains, Bli Bli, Palmwoods and Yandina, opening up rural lands to become residential estates, retirement resorts and aged care facilities. The areas proposed include the blocks on the corner of Glenview Road and Frizzo Road at Glenview; seven lots around the corner of Ringwood Lane and Montville Mapleton Road, Mapleton; 67 Western Avenue, Montville; four blocks off Newells Road, Beerwah; the lands between Back Creek Road and Coochin Hills Drive, Beerwah; and nine land parcels

between Buzaki Road and Clearview Drive, Glass House Mountains. There is a page on council’s website which outlines the proposals, but site-specific information is not easy to comprehend. Council here also advise that residents have until 4.30pm July 6 to lodge a submission on the proposed changes. Tam Sainsbury Hollywood comes to Landsborough By Sonia Clark In a few weeks time, Landsborough scriptwriter, producer and director Tam Sainsbury will be shooting part of an upcoming web series on location in her home town. Locals may feel like they are on the set of a Hollywood film on July 3 and 4 when filming gets underway that will feature a local property location as well as general shots from around town. Pre-production is well underway for the sevenpart series ‘Time & Place’, which is scheduled to commence filming on the Sunshine Coast at the end of June. The series evolved from a writing project that Tam was originally scripting for television. A few years ago, Tam realised that the concept of ‘web series’ was rising in popularity and so decided to adapt her script to the new format, allowing her greater flexibility and more immediate distribution options. Tam says that the series was inspired by great Australian drama comedies that centre around family and relationships, such as ‘Packed to the Rafters’, ‘Offspring’ and ‘The Secret Life of Us’. Unable to find Australian web series similar to these shows, Tam decided to write her own and has since attracted a stellar crew of well-

established industry professionals as well as pulling together an impressive cast of talented and well-known actors. “So many great Australian actors are now embracing web series, which are proving to be just as much of a professional choice as traditional film and television roles. We have an amazing cast that also includes a number of local Sunshine Coast actors,” explained Tam. The web series follows the story of a young magazine writer who returns along with her husband and daughter to the small coastal town she grew up in after many years abroad. Like all good scripts there may be certain elements of similarity with aspects of Tam’s own life adventures – at the very least her experience working in the creative industries and living overseas for many years. After growing up in New Zealand and Australia, Tam moved to the UK when she was 21 and followed her passion for Film and Television, graduating with a degree from the University of Surrey and going on to work in the industry internationally on feature films, television shows, news programs, documentaries and advertisements. She has previously written and directed a feature film, numerous short films and last year her most recent film debuted internationally and recently won the Silver Award at Cinemafest in New York. She has also written two children’s books. Tam returned to the Sunshine Coast ten years ago and now calls Landsborough home. “I’m excited to be filming in my home town,” she said. “I love the area and I love the people here. The natural beauty of this region inspires my creativity and it’s just easy happy living which I love coming home to.” If you fancy some star spotting, the cast includes industry veteran and Gold Logie and AFI award winning actress Tracy Mann, Conrad Coleby (‘Sea Patrol’, ‘All Saints’ and ‘Home and Away’) and Lara Cox (‘Heartbreak High’, ‘All Saints’ and ‘Home and Away’) who plays the lead role of Rebecca. Sunshine Coast Council has funded part of the series through their Regional Arts Development

Community News Landsborough community loses local champion

Landsborough icon Wendy Dixon passed away in May at the age of 68, and last week the Landsborough and District Historical Society held a morning tea at the museum to honour Wendy and the contribution that she had made both to the museum and to those that she worked with. Current Society President Tim Venter, along with past presidents Dot Gauntlett and Rosie Field and Sunshine Coast Councillor Rick Baberowski, spoke on the day paying tribute to Mrs Dixon. She joined the Landsborough Historical Society 31 years ago and dedicated many years to the Landsborough Museum having served in every position on the committee, as well as being the museum’s manager and curator between 1988 and 1997. She was also instrumental in having the Old Shire Chambers heritage listed in 1999 and commissioning the iconic murals featured in the museum. Member for Caloundra Mark McArdle, who was unable to attend the event, said: “We certainly owe Wendy a great deal for her selfless work and contributions to the museum and Sunshine Coast community. “Her legacy, however, will live on and continue through the many dedicated members of the museum, including President Tim Venter and Curator Brian McConnell,” Mr McArdle said.

Crystal Waters Anniversary Celebrations Contributed by Richard Giles The Crystal Waters Community was established formally at Kilcoy Lane in Conondale in June 1988 and will be celebrating its 30th Anniversary on Saturday June 30 with the launch of a DVD/Film project on the history of the community and a Music Club evening.

Crystal Waters was designed and built up over a three year period from 1985 until 1988 when it was formally approved by the state minister in charge at the time as it was the first rural Body Corporate structure in Queensland back then.

POLICE BEAT School grounds outside school hours A quick reminder coming up to school holidays that school grounds are out of bounds. Regardless of whether it is normally the school you attend you are not allowed to be on the property outside of normal school hours except for organised activities, meetings, etc. Police are regularly called to school grounds by neighbours or State Security who monitor the schools outside hours. Please be aware that you may be charged with trespassing on Education Queensland property if you are found to not have a lawful reason for being there. Safe driving Beerwah officers unfortunately regularly attend traffic crashes. While I can’t give actual statistics I would have to say that many of the people involved in these crashes are younger drivers. One of the most common infringements issued at these incidents is for following another vehicle too closely. Unsurprisingly most drivers initially don’t believe that they have been too close, until you explain the two second rule. You should always allow two seconds between your car and the car in front of you and, measuring in time rather than distance, this means that the distance is further the faster you are travelling. Two seconds is roughly how much time it takes the average person to react to something while driving, such as the car in front suddenly slowing or stopping. As you are driving along, pick a landmark such as a guide post or light pole and start counting when the car in front of you passes it, adjust your speed so that you pass it two seconds later and stick to that distance while you are in that speed zone. When the speed changes do it again. Soon you will be able to instantly recognise when you are a safe distance away. Remember safe and courteous driving is free!

The land was bought in the late 1970s and was settled by numbers of people with visions to return to the land. In 1981 the settler group established a legal co-operative to look after the social and educational needs of the community. After that was set up, discussions among members eventually led to them asking a permaculture designer to look at gathering together several others with engineering experience and permaculture backgrounds to design a community on the approximately 600 acres of land based at Aherns Road in Conondale. Activities planned for the day start with a Joint Breakfast at 9am followed by the sharing of the history of the beginnings of Crystal Waters. Some food will be available at lunch time from the Crystal Waters Kitchen. In the early afternoon there will be children's activities and games with the community. The day will finish with the Crystal Waters Music Club kicking off at 4pm and playing into the evening. The performer, the wonderful Andrea Kirwin, will be opening the evening with other musicians, plus a local poet known as the clever Mindfulness Poet will be performing with a special humorous tribute poem to Crystal Waters. The Music Club evening is an admission event.

Coochin Creek Bushland Group Contributed by Gordon Reddeck The group’s next working bee takes place on Tuesday June 26 starting at 8am and ending at 10am continuing the work started in the last working bee clearing Glycine from the Rock Hole area. The working bee will be followed by a presentation about the control of the invasive weed Morning Glory from 10am-11am which will be held in the open, under the trees on the reserve. The presenter will be Jeanette Nobes, who has forty years experience in rainforest conservation, specialising in the control of invasive weeds, in particular, Morning Glory. Anybody wishing to just attend Jeanette’s presentation is welcome to join the group from 10am. For those keen to take part in the working bee it is advisable to wear boots, a long-sleeved shirt, long pants, sun hat, and to carry a water bottle. All equipment required, including tick repellent, will be supplied. We will start by meeting at the gate to Caralan Park, which is at the corner of Emma Place and Caralan Way in Beerwah. To find us, just follow the signs from the entrance of Caralan Park. Participation is free and tea will be served. Vale, Lion Roger Jackson Landsborough connects 1930-2018 on Facebook The members of Maleny Blackall Range Club gathered recently to farewell their Charter President Thomas Henry Roger Jackson (Roger), on what would have been his 88th birthday. His unswerving commitment to the Maleny community filled the church with his family, Lions, Ambulance, and RSL family members to farewell a man who had made such an impact in the 38 years he and Lions Lady Tricia have lived in the area. Semi-retirement to the Maleny area brought him to the attention of one of the Beerwah Lions members who spoke with him often in Roger’s part time real estate job. Sasho Aleksiev finally wore Roger down and he became the Charter President of the new Lions Club of Maleny Blackall Range, which chartered on 28 May, 1983. Roger’s commitment to Lions was honoured last year, when the club awarded the inaugural Roger Jackson Personal Achievement Bursary to the overall winner of the Club judging of Lions Youth of the Year. Roger is a Melvin Jones Fellow, the highest honour available in Lions International and received two President’s Awards and a Secretary’s Award for his commitment to Lions, particularly in the local community. He was the recipient of community awards including recognition from the Queensland Ambulance, Maleny Branch and the 2001 Longman Electorate Senior Citizen of the Year.

A handful of Landsborough business owners recently came together to explore how they could strengthen relationships with each other and their community and a decision was made to create a Landsborough Connect Facebook page. Landsborough Connect is a positive space for local businesses, community organisations and groups to connect, collaborate, share resources, and support each other and community members. GMAN Working Bee

GMAN (Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network) is having an informal working bee and barbeque this Sunday, June 24. This is an excellent opportunity for anyone interested in the local environment to come along, meet members and have a chat.

The working bee starts at 9am, at 122 Glasshouse-Woodford Road. It involves light pruning and raking, and some work in our native plant nursery. Participants are welcome to just turn up on Sunday, but please bring your own gardening gear (secateurs, rakes, gloves), a water bottle and chair. A free sausage sizzle will be provided on site from 11am. Additional drinks and ice creams will be for sale. GMAN is a local environment group that has been operating for over 25 years. Projects include growing eucalypt plantations to provide food for sick or injured koalas in care; supporting the reintroduction of the Richmond Birdwing butterfly; and providing plants to assist with the restoration, revegetation and rehabilitation of local sites, parks and local walking tracks. Maleny Visitor Information Centre

With President Scilla Ecuyer Did you know that the Maleny Visitor Information Centre has no paid staff and is run entirely by volunteers who bring a broad range of skills and knowledge to their roles? Currently the centre is on the lookout for someone to take on the role of treasurer. For the last four years we have received sterling service from Dick Newman, who has our accounts in tip-top order. However, as Dick is retiring from the position in August this year, we are searching for a suitable replacement. We are hoping that there might be someone available in the Maleny area who would like to give some voluntary service to our efficient and highly regarded Information Centre which currently has about 60 hardworking volunteers. We are a very happy group and would welcome

anyone with some accounting experience and a sound knowledge of MYOB who might like to join us. This would be a good chance for a Malenyite to give back something to the community and get to know us all. Dick says the work probably involves about two hours a week and though the successful applicant might like to undergo training and join us as a volunteer as well, this is not strictly necessary. MVIC is also looking for some new volunteers to take on three shifts a month. Shifts can be either 9.30am-1pm or 1pm-4pm in the Centre on Maple Street. Come on in and have a look and pick up an application form. New contemporary and vibrant spaces for people to enjoy while reading newspapers or a favourite book are just some of the benefits of Sunshine Coast Council’s Beerwah Library refurbishment officially launched last week. Division 1 Councillor Rick Baberowski said the upgrade ensures the new-look library keeps pace with how libraries need to provide more specialised and flexible environments, while still complementing the distinct locality and communities they serve. This project was completed in conjunction with Sunshine Coast Libraries new Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) system – which makes borrowing and returning items more efficient. The system is a combination of radio frequency and microchip-based technology which uses radio waves to make borrowing and returning items even easier. “During the 2017/18 financial year, 880 new people became members at Beerwah Library,

adding to Beerwah Library’s total of 6,732 members,” Cr Baberowski said. “I want to remind the community, this is your library, the community’s library, if you know someone who hasn’t visited in a while, reach out, tell them about these changes and get excited about this wonderful community facility.”

School holiday fun at Maleny book festival

As children and parents count down the days to school holidays, book lovers in Maleny are putting the final touches on the jam-packed children’s program for this year’s Celebration of Books festival. Held from July 13-15, there’ll be plenty of fun and creative activities to keep the kids busy in the last weekend of the school holidays. Organising committee member Claire Booth said Celebration of Books is all about embracing the joy, passion, creativity and adventure that books bring. And they’ve got some great events lined up to make sure the kids are part of that. At 5pm on Friday July 13, awardwinning author Aleesah Darlison and talented illustrator Emma Middleton will launch their new book, ‘The Dream Bird’, with a pyjama party at the Maleny Library. All ages can join in on the free event, with songs, games, readings and more, including prizes for the best PJs, best slippers and kookiest outfit! The library will be buzzing again on the Saturday with the Friends of Maleny Library’s Bumper Book Sale from 9am, a gorgeous display of original

illustrations from children’s books inside the library, and the Sunshine Storytime party from 10am. Young and old are invited to come dressed as a character from their favourite book and enjoy listening to some of the Sunshine Coast’s finest authors and illustrators read their stories. With puppets, prizes, giveways and opportunities to have books signed, this is a great way to engage kids in the shared delights of books, storytelling and reading. Budding young authors, poets and illustrators can hone their skills on Saturday afternoon with two fabulous workshops specifically designed for children aged 6 to 12. Create and draw your very own fantasy character with Aleesah Darlison at the Fairies, Unicorns & Dragons workshop. Or be inspired by the native animals and surrounds of Maleny with the Magic Mountain illustration workshop, hosted by local Sunshine Coast artist Kerry Ide. By Sonia Clark Celebrated local author and publisher Jill Morris has spent years sharing her passion for conservation and creating inspirational resources for children. For over 20 years, visitors including artists, writers and school children of all ages have been inspired at ‘Book Farm’, the much-loved creative space located at Reesville. Located on the property owned by Jill and her late husband Richard Dent, ‘Book Farm’ and its surrounding acres of rainforest have played host to thousands of visiting school children and undoubtedly fired up the creative imaginations of countless young and young at heart visitors. Now it is time for a change of focus for Jill, and she has planned a very special event to herald the end of the ‘Book Farm’ era. On Friday July 6 and Saturday July 7 between 9am and 3pm, hundreds of books will be given away for free. Jill describes the upcoming event as almost “a last hurrah” and it will be like a mini garage sale of books and items accumulated over the years. In some ways too, this gift of free books to the community can also be viewed as a fitting tribute to the memory of Richard, who spent numerous years as “warehouse storeman” packing and preserving books including those from their independent publishing company ‘Greater Glider Productions’. “Going through the warehouse, I was surprised how many books we had so neatly packed,” said Jill. “Big publishers would often pulp their remainders so we would say ‘give them to us’ to save them from being pulped. I was concerned that these titles should now be in children’s hands – hence the giveaway.”

The book sale will run for two days with Friday allocated to teachers and teacher librarians, and the Saturday open to families and the general public. On Friday teachers and librarians will have the opportunity to take away full classroom book sets of various titles and free books for their libraries, while Saturday has more of a family focus. On both days free books will be given away in the property’s pool house. Hundreds of publisher remainder copies and out of print books will be distributed. A small bundle of collectors’ items will be available, and a popup bookshop of specially priced more recent titles will be facilitated onsite by Rosetta Books in the Mandarin Tree Room. The event will also feature a Maleny Lions Club sausage sizzle, CWA Devonshire tea, book readings, and art demonstrations with illustrator Heather Gall. Bring your own carry bag! This not to be missed book lovers’ event will be held at 8 Rees Lane, Reesville.

Lock in your spot at Vacation Care Winter school holidays are almost here but there is still time to lock in your spot at Glass House Early Education Centre for some awesome school holiday fun. Vacation care offers school aged children a fantastic range of activities, excursions and kid focussed fun which can appeal to the kids of stay at home as well as working families. The program has been carefully planned to ensure a ‘boredom free zone’ and most activities are included in the daily fees, while CCB discounts are available for activities which may incur additional costs. The vacation care program is a great way for kids to be creative and engaged, try new activities and meet other local children in a safe and supportive environment. Ange and the team at Glass House Early Education Centre have put their thinking caps on and have released a jam-packed program for their ‘Schoolies’ with a heap of awesome activities, cool and creative crafts, boredom busting excursions, local adventures and more! Week One kicks off on Monday July 2 and will feature activities focussed on the ‘Schoolies’ garden and a special ‘project’ using recycled paper. Tuesday will see the ‘schoolies’ head off on an excursion to join other vacation care groups for a ‘colour fun run’. Wednesday promises some super crafty action with a day making cool creative pieces such as dream catchers (including special unicorn dream catchers), wind chimes and special keepsakes for home.

Thursday the group will head to Mount Tibro for a bushwalk and lovely picnic, and Friday will be the always popular messy play day. Week Two commences Monday July 9 and features a mixed science and art day (who knows what wonderful creations can be made when you mix the two!). Tuesday involves a special excursion to Sunshine Animal Refuge on the Centre Bus. This will be a lovely way for the schoolies to take the donations that have been collected at the centre and meet the volunteers and some of the rescue animals first hand that will benefit from the collection. Strawberry Fields will be forever on Wednesday when the children head off to the Glenview Strawberry farm to pick (and sample!) strawberries – yum! An art incursion - similar to the hugely popular ‘Sand Wizards’ that came last holidays is on Thursday and Friday will be the highly anticipated ‘Master Chef’ day – so bring a big appetite! During term time, ‘Schoolies’ before and after school care is available and includes a popular (especially for parents) ‘homework club’. The Centre also has its own dedicated bus with localised school drop off and afternoon pickups available. Currently the service is available for Beerburrum, Beerwah and Glass House State Schools as well as Glasshouse Christian College. Girl Guides at Glass House

Local girls from age six recently attended a come and try Guiding Day, where they got to experience many different activities by playing ‘The Game of Guiding’, a board style game where participants move their counter around the board following the instructions on the spots landed upon. It wasn’t all smooth sailing though, with go backs and forfeits to be paid. Some of the challenges included making a “masterpiece” with icing on a biscuit, building a structure from cardboard tubes, placing a sling on the teddy bears, making God’s Eyes and designing their own Guide uniform. Glass House Mountain Guides meet on Mondays from 4pm till 6pm at the Glass House Mountains Community Hall, 8 Coonowrin Road, Glass House Mountains. It is open to girls aged six years to 17. Continued success for Black Swan students

Students from Landsborough's Black Swan School of Dance delighted audience members and adjudicators at the recent DanceLife Unite Eisteddfod at Matthew Flinders Performing Arts Centre. Dancing against fierce competition from across Queensland, the school's junior performance took out second place in the Eight Years and Under Jazz category, while soloists Olivia Frahm–Bell and Savannah Charters placed second/third and fourth in Contemporary/Ballet and Acro respectively. Black Swan owner and principal dance teacher Mrs Rebecca said the result was a reflection of the girls’ hard work and commitment to dance. “Not only did the students have a great time performing but they also gained invaluable stage experience which will further their results in the next competition," she said. The children at the Landsborough Kindergarten were delighted to spend time recently with their special guests, residents from Dicky Beach Aged Care. The children made the most of the opportunity to sing and dance, read stories, paint and play with their older guests. Kindy Teacher Director Ellie Watson said Landsborough Kindergarten believes it is important to build strong, positive and nurturing community relationships, and this visit is an example of how the Kindergarten helps to create this type of environment. “It is always such a delight watching different generations interact and share their stories with each other,” Ellie said.

Beerwah State Primary School recently held a Cupcake Stall to raise funds for the chaplaincy service, under the guidance of Chappy Mike Turner. There were over 800 cupcakes donated by generous mums, dads, students and community members and at the last count, $633 was raised. With such a great variety of cupcakes, the students found it hard to decide which one they would choose. Chappy Mike thanked everyone for their generous support and help for this worthwhile service.

Students give Fanfare the thumbs up

Five Beerburrum State School Instrumental Music students recently travelled to Meridan State College to perform as part of Education Queensland’s Fanfare Music Festival. Fanfare is a bi-annual event that takes place throughout the state, offering school ensembles the chance to perform and receive feedback from a professional adjudicator. It was the first year that each of the Beerburrum students has begun playing, so being able to take the stage alongside much older and more experienced musicians was a significant achievement. The adjudicator provided some great suggestions and said that she had enjoyed the performance. The certificate of participation is now proudly on display at the school. With more schools competing than ever before, the ‘Breakthru’ School Music and Dance Competition grand final was held at Sunshine Plaza’s Riverwalk Stage in Maroochydore. A record 570 primary and secondary singers, dancers and musicians from 25 Sunshine Coast schools participated in the four competition heats. Glenview State School took out third place in the primary music category with prize winnings of $1,000 for the school and $500 for students A quarter of the students from Glenview are involved in the Senior Choir under the direction of Mrs Chelsea Harry. Whilst they may be a local school with small numbers, they have a big heart with many passionate kids performing in music groups. The local community turned out in their droves to support the students, and they walked away with 3rd place, and $1,500 dollars prize money. Students were outstanding in their commitment, dramatic presence, execution and made the community very proud indeed.

Final piece of pathway puzzle

A missing link in the footpath network at Glenview will finally be realised soon. The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) have notified Division 5 Councillor Jenny McKay that they are ready to start construction of the footpath at the junction of Stevens Road and Mooloolah Connection Road. The new pathway section will join the existing path which ends just in front of the tennis courts, with the path that runs along Stevens Road. This will require two road crossings – one across Mooloolah Connection Road, and then again across Stevens Road to join onto the existing path.

Calling local knitters

Throughout June and July the Mooloolah Valley Pharmacy is asking locals to turn their knitting needles to a good cause as part of the Guardian Angel Knitting Program which now in its twentieth year. They are keen to spread the work to our talented local knitters to donate knitted garments including beanies, scarves, jumpers and throws that will be distributed to Vinnies shops and services in a bid to provide each of the 105,000 homeless Australians with warm winter wear.

We attended the recent community forum meeting about the proposed development at 37 Maleny Road, Landsborough and saw firsthand the plans of how this high-density housing scheme will cover the entire block of 1.184 acres of land. The meeting was very well coordinated by the Landsborough Area Community Association. Residents should check out the information request sent to the developer Simon Graye by the Principal Development Planner on the Sunshine Coast Council's website using development application number MCU18/0085. The proposed development does not comply on a number of significant issues that will impact of our town. The petition can be signed at Morris House, Landsborough Newsagency and Buck’s Bakery. Why does council not look outside the square and offer Landsborough a modern Information Centre (at say the museum complex or Peace Park)? This would offer passing tourists a one stop information complex, rather than an unsightly concrete jungle at the Gympie Street North roundabout. I appreciate all the exceptional hard work Cr Rick Baberowski has done for our communities and, as he has explained to me, his vision for our surrounding communities is for the preservation and awareness of our historical heritage and surrounding beauty for us and future generations as well as giving Landsborough a modern direction. It seems to me that the Landsborough Future Plan (which is a credit to Cr Rick and the council) is on collision course with MCU 18/0085. Landsborough is the historic and heritage gateway to the Hinterland. This is a treasure not to be jeopardised by the government or council of the day with a poorly planned public housing development plan, which has the potential in its present form to create a low socioeconomic ‘ghetto’ in Landsborough, thanks to the un-paralleled wisdom of Code Assessable Developments Queensland Law (Right to Information Act 2009). This Act has to be amended ASAP. This needs to be changed in order to protect all small towns in the Hinterland, so communities can freely contribute to planning decisions – not just for developers, council and State Government to dictate the future of our communities. John Borthwick (Sunshine Coast Council’s development manager) said to me it was not council’s responsibility to have input to who was to live in the shared accommodation section of the planned development – but only to make sure Code Assessable Development Queensland Law is achieved. As I have researched, there are

This letter is in response to developer Simon Graye's comments as published in last week’s edition of GC&M News. Firstly, the overwhelming majority of locals do not consider this project will “be of significant social benefit to the Landsborough community”. It is disappointing that a resident of Mons would seek to impose a personal view regarding this point on to the local community. Secondly, I do not believe the developer has any substantial regard for social outcomes. Generally speaking, more lettable units in a property gives a higher rental yield. Old fashioned profit appears to be the primary motivation. If the case were otherwise then I am sure that an alternative site, in a location with far more appropriate for work opportunities and support services would have been selected. Putting disadvantaged individuals into Landsborough is not going to be useful for anyone, not least prospective tenants. That Mr Graye is going to be retaining ownership is no surprise. Even if the property could be titled to allow units to be sold separately, the rooming accommodation units would be unacceptable as home loan security for any first-tier lender. This is in itself worth considering; how can an apparently

residential unit not be fit to get a home loan for? Mr Graye also noted that “this level of scrutiny isn't unusual in a development of this type”. The development has no precedent in the area. If it proceeds as currently proposed, and the inevitable subsequent flood of similar developments happens, then we shall see what level of scrutiny is or isn't unusual. Re: Where is our kindness?

I write in response to Damon Robinson’s letter in the June 13 edition of GC&M News. There is a myth that many have fallen for saying that Australia gives way too much money in aid and needs to start “look(ing) after our own before extending our generosity to others”. There’s plenty of this misleading propaganda on social media (fake news). I wonder if those who subscribe to this myth have researched the actual amount Australia contributes in aid? The truth is that Australia’s aid commitment as a percentage of gross national income (GNI) is currently at a record low level of 0.22% for FY2018-19. Put simply, 22c in every $100 (of GNI) is going to Australian Aid which is projected to drop to 0.19% GNI by FY2021-22. Is 22c in every $100 better off in Australia’s relatively bulging pockets or directed towards ensuring children have clean water to drink so they don’t die from preventable diseases like diarrhea? Perhaps some people really do think that 0.22% of GNI is too much to give – I would have thought that as Australians we could do better. I would have thought that we as humans could do better! Peace. Club Glass House turns Wonderland

Patrons of Club Glass House may have felt like they had stepped into Wonderland as the bowling green filled up with mad hatters for the annual Beerwah Kindergarten Barefoot Bowls Fundraising Day. More than 40 people adorned in fabulous themed hat creations stepped up to the mat to bowl their best shots in the hopes of inching out the competition. With a round robin system in place, there were plenty of laughs and many new friendships made during the friendly matches, with a dozen spot prizes for hitting the jack bringing out the competitive side in some. While the clouds initially threatened to open up, bowlers were thrilled to play the majority of their

matches in brilliant sunshine after club member Bill Tumbridge provided some last-minute coaching for those new to the barefoot bowls experience and shared his knowledge with those keen to upskill during the afternoon. There were plenty of winners grinning at the conclusion of the day, with 16 raffle prizes drawn from the hundreds of ticket sales from kindy families and the wider community. Beerwah Kindergarten Fundraising Coordinator Sally Joyce said this was one of only two major fundraisers the kindy holds each year and the support from those who attended and the businesses who generously donated raffle prizes have given the coffers at the community kindy a welcome boost.

Gilbert and Sullivan comic operas have the effect of sending you home after a happy, romantic ending, with a smile on your face as you hum the catchy melodies, and Margaret Taylor’s ‘Iolanthe’ is a tale of fairies and mortals that will charm you from start to finish. The Gilbertian paradoxes and humour, pointing up social and political idiosyncrasies, are too good to miss. So listen hard; they are especially relevant today, as the librettist lampoons an ineffective House of Lords and suggests peers should be chosen by “competitive examination’. A 24-year-old hero who is a Tory fairy down to the waist with mortal and radical legs, not to mention having a mother who looks 17, adds to the fun. This energetic Maleny Singers’ production makes the most of this chaotic situation, with some special highlights. The entrance of the peers in stunning blue robes and coronets is sheer drama. Only a few of this production’s magic moments were: Jenny Keys’ polished performance as the Fairy Queen; the clarity of Guardsman Tony Glazebrook’s ‘little liberal’ number; Ian McMaster’s fruity bass, especially in combination with Colin Dunn’s tenor; Evalee Sharples’ elegant charm; the 19 strong orchestra that struck all the right notes; much effective chorus work; and, as Iolanthe, Viera Keogh’s heartstopping appeal to the Chancellor. Hair Aid High Tea

The team from RAHD Hair and Beauty at Landsborough have put together an afternoon of fun and glamour for their afternoon ‘High Tea at the Orangery’ fundraiser on Sunday July 8 at 1.30pm. Tickets are $50, and attendees receive champagne on arrival as well as a delicious high tea, and will go in the draw to win a fabulous lucky door prize. The event will also feature a silent auction and a special guest speaker. The team are raising funds for Hair Aid, an organisation that sends teams of hairdressers to poverty- stricken areas around the world to work directly with people in need, teaching them skills that can allow them to be more self-sufficient. RAHD Hair and Beauty Salon co-owner Reece Aberley will be donating his time and expertise by travelling with the charity to Indonesia later this year. The Sunshine Coast Jazz Club welcomes back hot swinging Jazz Band the Caxton Street Jazz Band again to perform at the Caloundra Powerboat Club on Sunday July 1 from 2pm. Tributes to the early pioneers will be featured at the Bankfoot House open day this Sunday, June 24. This free event is part of recognizing the 150th anniversary of the establishment of Bankfoot House by William and Mary Grigor in 1868. The Grigor family, together with their extended Burgess and Ferris families, carefully preserved the history of the State Heritage Listed residence for over 130 years, until the last resident (Jack Ferris) passed away in 2002. The entire contents of the house were all family possessions and are now being preserved by the Sunshine Coast Council and the volunteers of the Friends of Bankfoot House. Fellow Scots, William Grigor and James Low, were quick to establish Cobb & Co coach staging points along the newly completed road north to Gympie in 1868, and they played a significant role in the development of the timber industry. From 10am on June 24, visitors will be able to view the outcome of film projects about the Grigors as well the Low pioneering families from Yandina, and can discuss the projects with the film maker. Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network Glass House Mountains Tea-Tree Leptospermum luehmannii

Never heard of it? … then it’s time you grew some as they are easy to grow, and are versatile, delicious and healthy. It is a member of the brassica family (cabbage, broccoli, turnip and kale), but it’s the swollen stem that you eat of Kohl Rabi. The leaves grow something like a flat leaved kale – and can be eaten like kale too – but the stems swell to the size of a tennis ball or larger and it is this which you harvest to eat. They are generally either creamed skinned or purple skinned – I like the purple skinned varieties as they do look attractive in the garden… and that’s important too. You may have trouble finding seedlings of Kohl Rabi, so you may have to grow them from seed, which is fairly easy to find. Luckily, they germinate and grow very readily so it doesn’t take long to have your own seedlings ready to plant out. As with any of their brassica cousins, a bed prepared with organic matter, some blood and bone and a little dolomite is best. They do grow best through the cooler months, but I tend to grow them all year round as a good staple vegetable… you just have to be prepared to deal with caterpillars and grasshoppers more during spring and summer. I tend to plant about 10 seedlings every two weeks – this gives me a good continual supply over winter and means that if some don’t develop their swollen stems properly (which will happen), there are others to take their place. Like the brassicas, they are gross feeders and so need regular watering and feeding with nutrients, and need a high level of nitrogen as they grow. Cut back the nitrogen as the stem swells and then use a little more potash to boost their stem growth. Watch out for caterpillars and grasshoppers, as they just love the leaves. Treat them with a suitable spray or cover the plants with a fine exclusion netting. They develop reasonable quickly, and so you should be picking them for their stems after about eight weeks. But you can harvest the leaves to eat as a leafy green throughout their growth. I use Kohl Rabi in many ways… in stir fries, as a ‘chip’ on the barbeque, added to mashed potato to reduce the carb loading, in stews and soups, used raw in salads or just as a steamed vegetable themselves with butter and cracked pepper. They have a white pearly flesh inside. I prefer to peel the skin but I know of people who eat them skin and all. They taste similar to a turnip crossed with a cabbage – so it’s not something which tends to excite too many people, but they are mostly fibre so are good for the diet conscious. They also store really well in the fridge crisper – keeping for a month or more. The name comes from the German ‘Kohl’ meaning cabbage, and the Swiss ‘Rübe’ meaning turnip.

If you have been able to reach the peak of one of a number of the Glass House Mountains you would have seen this beautiful Leptospermum. A medium to tall shrub with multiple stems, reaching to four metres at times, this species is only found in the local Glass House area. It also favours the rocky soils of the mountain tops but can be seen by the discerning eye when walking around the Tibrogargan Circuit. The leaves of this Tea-tree are glossy green, elliptical and larger than those of most Leptospermum species. However, it is the striking and distinctive bark in changing colours of burgundy and green that clearly identifies this shrub. Typical small white flowers appear from December to May followed by tiny woody seed capsules. If you have ever wondered about the GMAN logo – it has been based on the flower of the Leptospermum luehmannii! The reason is that we consider this to be one of our most significant floral species and it encompasses our objective to protect and preserve our iconic Glass House Mountains. If climbing our mountains please be careful to keep to the paths and avoid damaging any plants, many of which are “endangered”.

The very popular Blackall Range Woodcrafters Guild’s Wood Expo at the Montville State School Assembly Hall is on again on July 7 and 8. Pieces created by guild members will be on display, many for sale and some for judging purposes only. Wednesday June 13: our Ladies played in a 4 Ball Best Ball Stableford competition over 18 holes. First place went to the team of Liz Mellish and Mo Lawrence with 63, runners-up were Margaret Goodger and Robin Hay with 56, and third place went to the team of Christine Lemon and Susanne Hardy with 52. NTP: 3 – Robin Hay and 5 – Liz Mellish. Friday June 15: Once again there was a big roll up of golfers wanting to play in our Chook Run 12 Hole Competition. First place went to Anne Devane and runners-up were Tom Kennedy and John Hay in a tie and third place was a triple tie between Toni Bishop, Margaret Trigger and Christine Lemon. Beerwah sweeps competition

On Sunday June 10, four of Beerwah’s best young rowers competed in the Queensland Indoor Rowing Championships held at Kawana Waters State College. They had all been training hard and it was fantastic to see them achieve, in what was the first indoor rowing competition for most of them. Tyler Pearce was once again the most outstanding indoor rower, bagging seven gold medals in the U16 age group and competing in a number of relays. Tyler was within 0.03 seconds of equalling a world record last year for the 100m event with a time of 15.03 seconds. This year he has broken a number of Australian records and even inspired his teacher and mentor Steve Jeffery to compete at the Queensland Championships for the first time. A huge thank you goes to Wendy Coghill, Sunshine Coast Indoor Rowing President, for organising the Queensland Indoor Rowing Championships. Beerwah High School is expected to have another strong group of rowers competing next year.

There was lots of fun had by all with all the prizes out of the hat. Thanks to Club Glass House for lunch and also Alex Gow Funerals who have so graciously sponsored this day for several years now. Many thanks for everyone who helped make this day happen. Wednesday June 13: 10 teams played in brilliant weather to win that elusive Jackpot of $600 which has not gone off for over 18 months. Winners of the day with the highest winning score with 38 were Chris Dougan, Di Garland and Rob Scullion. 2nd highest score, which was 25, went to Noelle Dean, Bruce Angus and Warren Blackbourne. Mystery prize was won by Millie Freshwater, Eileen Pierce and

Brian Saunders. However that $600 is still out there as the number drawn for the jackpot was -1. Next month’s date is July 11, morning tea 9am for 9.30am start of play. There will be no social bowls this Saturday morning, returning the week after on June 30 at 9.30am for a 10am start, $12 and everyone including non-members is welcome. Contributed by Una Robinson Cerebral Palsy sufferer Tom Robins, aged 13 and currently studying Year 8 at Beerwah High School, is a real go-getter, especially where his sport activities are concerned. Tom has already successfully completed three Sunshine Coast Sanitarium Weetbix TRYathalons as the only disabled participant. He started playing Wheelchair Basketball with the interschool Reverse Inclusion program in July 2017, which is a sport especially for non-able bodied/socially challenged participants. He is a member of the Suncoast Spinners Wheelchair Basketball Club and he trains

together with his brother Jac at the Sunshine Coast University on Wednesday nights. His Wheelchair Basketball classification is '1' which means that he is very restricted in his movements. The more restricted an athlete is, the lower the classified number they receive. There are three divisions in Wheelchair Basketball tournaments, Premiership, A grade & B grade, and Tom’s team from the Suncoast Spinners was placed second in B grade. Congratulations to Thomas who was awarded the ‘most valuable player’ of the division, judged by the referees, and he has been selected for training with Queensland Rolling Thunder, which is the Under 23 Wheelchair Basketball state team.

Contributed by Pauline Fraley The Wagtails played their last match of the season and what a beauty it was. We played against the minor premiers Maroochydore TTs, won three sets and only lost 42-34. It was a great day. Thanks Sonia, Christine, Gerry and Cynthia and of course Maroochy ladies. Witta Wikings took on Division 2 Kawana Coolers on Sunday 10 June. It was a good standard of tennis. Towards the end of the day it was Kawana 6 sets to Witta 4 sets. Unfortunately the rain came in during the last 2 sets and they were incomplete. Kawana winning 6 sets, 56 games to 4 sets 40 games. After battling both rain downpours and fading light, Witta managed a win against Nambour No Worries 8 sets 58 games to 4 sets 46 games. Haydyn Craven came out best on ground after winning all his sets. What began as a beautiful winter's day developed into a change of weather conditions which saw one court being deemed unplayable. We finally managed to use three courts once Div 3 had finished their match. This led to the last two matches being played at dusk. Unfortunately lights were not an option, so a strategic battle featuring Haydyn, Denis, Jim and Bob ensured the Wompoos victory. Junior Clinic with Katya will be held on Thursday and Friday July 12 and 13 from 8.30am to 11.30am, morning tea and refreshments provided.
