FROM THE EDITOR BEING our first edition for 2021, I wanted to wish everyone a very happy New Year and hope that you had a great festive season even if, like us, it didnâ€™t quite match pre-Christmas plans and expectations. Our plan was to hit the open road for a cruisy road trip to Wollongong for a lovely family Christmas. However, it wasnâ€™t long before our plans went a little pear shaped. The idea of journeying to the land of the Illawarra wasnâ€™t quite as enticing when it meant two weeks of hotel quarantine on the way home. We did manage to hit the road, travelling to northern NSW to spend Christmas Day and most of that week in a rustic cottage on the banks of a raging

Local talent reaching an international audience

By Sonia Isaacs Clark FORMER Beerwah High School student Laree Gadenne is proof that talent, creativity and determination can lead to big and exciting opportunities. Laree spoke to GC&M News about the success of her latest venture - a locally filmed six-part TV series called ‘Hard Knock Life’ that she created from scratch, which has been picked up for international release. Written, directed and co-produced by Laree, who also stars in a lead role, season one of the adult comedy series follows the lives and loves of four main characters as they navigate the world of dating and relationships. Showcasing our local talent and region, Laree said the series is based on humorous relatable situations and even some of her own life experiences. It has been picked up for distribution by major platforms including Amazon Prime Video in the USA and the UK, and Tubi and Plex Worldwide. It is also currently being pitched to Netflix America. An accomplished professional dancer and actor, Laree featured on the front cover of GC&M News in 2013 celebrating

her dance gold medal win at the World Championships of Performing Arts. She has enjoyed a career in both dance and television acting in America and Europe. Since returning to the Sunshine Coast in 2016, Laree has focussed on her entertainment and production business, with filming for ‘Hard Knock Life’ starting in 2018. As well as the series being picked up for major distribution, Laree has also been nominated in both the citizen and creative categories for her work on the series at the upcoming Sunshine Coast Council Australia Day Awards. Laree has always dreamed big and credits the unwavering support of those closest to her, including her mum Rhonda and husband Jason, for supporting her creative vision. Laree said initial editing for series one of the TV show was completed in 2019. However, the 2020 lockdown meant much of her work had to be put on hold. It proved a brilliant opportunity for Laree and husband Jason, who co-produced and filmed the series, to go back and fine tune production of the series.

Behind the scenes of ‘Hard Knock Life’ “Lockdown was a blessing, as it allowed Jason and I the time to really focus on the editing of the show and getting it to a level that would also appeal to an overseas audience,” Laree said. “People in other countries are really starting to appreciate and understand Australian humour now, and I think they love the perceived escapism of our lives and the stunning eye-catching beauty of our region with its beaches

and mountains – we made sure the Glass House Mountains area is featured heavily in many of our scenic shots,” she said. Surf’s up at Moby Vic’s IN what could become a signiﬁcant tourism drawcard for the region, a development application was lodged with Sunshine Coast Council in late December to establish a wave pool and surf park at the end of Johnston Road, Glass House Mountains, just before the Bruce Highway. The two adjoining land parcels involved are currently owned by Moby Vic’s Pty Ltd, with one parcel leased to grow pineapples. The application aims to realign the boundaries of the two blocks, creating a 4 hectare smaller parcel closest to Johnston Road where pineapple farming will continue and a 9.4 hectare block behind for the proposed surf safari park.

The almost $30 million venture is being driven by an enterprise called Surf Parks Australia, which holds the Australian franchise for the technology that will generate the waves, created by a company called American Wave Machines. In what the application report describes as a “holistic surﬁng experience”, the proposal is to build a wave pool and associated amenities, a wellness centre featuring yoga and meditation, paddock-to-plate food and beverage experiences, ocean and marine protection education, learn to surf classes and surf coaching. The wave pool is slated to be 315m long and 92m wide, bounded on one length by a viewing beach, behind

which sits the 1,500m2 of buildings to a maximum height of 8.5m. The building is planned to reference coastal inﬂuences, using wave forms and sandy colours, plus large open spaces and wide verandahs. The development is proposed to operate 6am-9pm, seven days a week. Water for the wave pool is planned to be sourced from an on-site spring-fed dam with top-up supply as needed from the existing private water main connected to the site. All water will be treated on-site, with the wave pool water quality being managed to high standards following the American Wave Pool’s water quality speciﬁcations. As the locality is distant from public transport, users will have to rely on private vehicles or tour buses to utilise the facility. A 102 space car park is planned, including room for multiple coaches. The American Wave Machines company has patented an air-pressure system to create reliable engineered waves that they claim on their website to mimic “real ocean dynamics”. The technology is used in the United States and the company has constructed a large wave pool in Japan

as a surfing training facility for the postponed 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. Discussions were held with Sunshine Coast Council last year, including with Cr Rick Baberowski, about issues related to protection of the interurban greenspace break, impacts on agricultural land availability, on-site effluent treatment and the need for the development. In 1999, back in the Caloundra City Council days before amalgamation, a development approval was given for a tourist attraction to be constructed on the site. In the old Caloundra planning scheme, the area was identified as a “tourist attraction and services area”. Under the current Sunshine Coast planning scheme the land is zoned rural so the proposed usage sits outside the normal parameters. However, the developer considers that this proposed development represents a regionally significant, unique tourism development that will enhance the Sunshine Coast’s tourism brand and reputation, and that the tourist attraction is a potentially consistent use within the rural zone definition. developments on the Sunshine Coast, there are two other development proposals already with the council that involve surﬁng wave pools. The long-awaited and often changed water-themed park on Steve Irwin Way at Glenview still contains a surf pool in its latest proposed development. This development ﬁrst seeks to develop a resort and water-themed park as stage one, before starting other stages including the possible wave pool. Another wave pool proposal has been made to the council at Coolum as part of a broader Surf Ranch Sunshine Coast development. This is a hybrid proposal involving a large intensive residential development, combined with an innovative wave generation system owned by world champion US surfer Kelly Slater. The $1 billion, 500 hectare development proposal in Coolum has created considerable community concern and, in statements made by Mayor Mark Jamieson, is not been supported by Council in its current form. Jewellery found locally SEVERAL rings have been sitting in the Beerwah Police Station property room for some time waiting for their owners to collect them. The rings were all found in the Beerwah area over the past 18 months or so. They are of varying value and all appear to be well worn. All items have been handed in as found property. Police believe they may have been inadvertently dropped by the owner or possibly discarded after being stolen. Seabird rescue volunteers wanted By Sonia Isaacs Clark FOR 20 years Bridgette and Paula Powers (aka The Twinnies) have devoted themselves to the rehabilitation of sick and injured seabirds and waterbirds. Their legendary commitment to wildlife care and rescue has been well documented over the years, with ABC currently ﬁlming for an upcoming feature on ‘Australian Story’. Their mum, Helen Powers, said that 2020 had been a particularly tough year at the Landsborough-based facility, with donations understandably down and an increase in bird rescues and calls for support. The Twinnies are hoping that in 2021, with the ongoing support of the community, the rescue charity, which operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, can continue to oﬀer high level care for injured animals. They are seeking help through the recruitment of new volunteers who are passionate about wildlife care. Volunteers are required to assist with clean up, feed and care for the birds, and provide general help around the centre. “For every bird we release back to the wild we get another two come in, so any help we can get is greatly appreciated. It is very rewarding work, especially to see the progress of an injured bird rehabilitated back to health, and it’s also a lovely way to get out of the house and meet others,” Helen said. Bridgette said that in 2021 she and Paula hoped to refocus their service to primarily assist injured water and sea birds. However, she said they would never turn an injured bird away as there are now more outlets and carers where they can refer other injured animals.

The Twinnies are looking for volunteers to help out at their Landsborough rescue She said more volunteers to help for a few hours either in the morning or afternoons would be great. All she asks is that they love working with birds. “We normally start volunteers oﬀ with helping out with washing up and cleaning, and then we show them how to help feed the birds, working up to learning how to handle them,” Bridgette said. “It’s a lovely feeling to see an injured bird nursed back to health and be released back into the wild, and we welcome anyone who loves birds to help.” For more details go to www.facebook.com/twinniespelicans or phone 5439 9995. Development applications you may have missed SUNSHINE Coast Council received a range of applications for proposed local developments in the Glasshouse Country area during the holiday period. Following is a summary of some that locals may be interested in: Slight change to retirement village in Beerwah An amendment has been submitted to the October 2019 application for a 200-dwelling, over-50s retirement village next to the Beerwah Hideaway on Steve Irwin Way resulting from a change of ownership. The 14.3 hectare block is owned by land development company IRBS Pty Ltd and the development will now be for Living Gems Lifestyle Resorts, which operates facilities in Maleny and Caboolture. The application is to amend the internal configuration to align with the approach taken by Living Gems. Alternative therapies centre for children with autism A material change of use application

was lodged for the building at 38 Cribb Street, Landsborough (the historic English, Scottish & Australian Bank building) to provide a disability support space for children with autism. According to the development report submitted on behalf of the applicants â€“ Elizabeth and Andrew Vaughan from All About Autism â€“ the support is primarily in the form of non-biological therapies (for example, sensory and musical therapy) designed to reduce childrenâ€™s anxieties, learn and build coping strategies and skills, and ultimately establish a pathway for their integration into the traditional, mainstream schooling model. The report states that the location is suitable due to its capacity to cater for greater numbers (up to 12 children), the homely feel (older residence) and, most importantly, a central location equipped with a fully enclosed outdoor sensory play area (fenced and gated rear lawn). 71 Beerwah Parade into 13 three- and four-bedroom units. As the land is already zoned for high density residential development, the application is deemed to be code assessable so no public submissions will be called for. In 2017 an application for a 68-bed residential care facility was made over the site (combined with the block to the north) but was subsequently withdrawn. In recent years, the buildings have been the used by ATL Graphix and are currently the base for Southern Cross Electrical Data (SCED). The development is being undertaken by Macforbes Super Pty Ltd, which has also had an approval granted for an eight-unit townhouse development on the adjacent block at 67 Beerwah Parade. This development is being marketed as Fig Tree Lane with construction scheduled to start early this year. Landsborough subdivision take a step closer In early 2020, a development application was lodged with the council to subdivide an existing 5.177 hectare block in Landsborough into six rural residential lots.

The land â€“ situated at 1876 Steve Irwin Way (just south of the Isambert Road intersection) â€“ is zoned rural residential so the development of the generous blocks ranging in size from 6,000m2 up to 15,081m2 was deemed to conform with the planning scheme. The application was approved by the council in late 2020. The next step in the process has begun with an operational works application lodged to start the road works, drainage, landscaping, stormwater, earthworks and water infrastructure. Surf park planned for Glass House A multi-million dollar application for a surfing wave pool development has been lodged on lands at the end of Johnston Road towards the Moby Vicâ€™s highway roadhouse. Using innovative technology developed in the United States, the 315m long and 92m wide pool will create consistent waves for surfers to enjoy at any time, during any conditions. Book lovers of Beerwah rejoice! UPDATE

IN February I finish my role as president of Maleny Commerce and I ask myself, where did that three years go? I’ve had the pleasure of working with other passionate community volunteers who turn up every day to try to make a difference. Being a volunteer is not the easiest of jobs as there is always someone ready to tell you how to do it better or what we should have done. The reality is that the people who do volunteer do so with heart and give their best. For several years I had dreamt of introducing a gift card to Maleny and as president of Maleny Commerce the chance finally came to pitch it to our businesses and make it a reality. Initially we were able to establish the Live Love Shop Maleny campaign

that morphed into the Maleny gift card, which has been a huge success, even smashing all our own expectations. I could not be prouder of the executives of our committee who saw my vision and gave up hundreds of hours of their time to introduce this program to Maleny. I step down knowing that the incoming committee will continue to assist our small businesses in the hinterland, representing them at local, state and federal levels of government. Then I saw a great opportunity to create a cool space here in Beerwah where people could come by and sit down, relax, read a book and have a coffee,” Kylie said. In setting up the store, Kylie was determined to make books as affordable as possible, so all books are priced between a cost-friendly 50c and $5. When a friend who was a boutique coffee roaster suggested adding a coffee machine to the mix, Kylie said her

Q: Why should people become a SES volunteer? There are lots of reasons why people decide to volunteer. However, in the majority of cases, it is because people want to support their local community and give something back. From a management perspective, local volunteers who can assist the community to be prepared and ready to respond to events help build resilience in our communities, allow more help for the vulnerable and help boost a quicker recovery. Community resilience leads to better outcomes, and people and communities can recover faster and better.

Q: Who makes a good SES volunteer? A good level of ﬁtness is important

during emergencies and self-assess capabilities, although we do have different functions so we have places for administration and less physical work. However, a large part of what we do is out and about in all weather conditions. It is very important to be able to work well as part of a team, as certain situations require a reliance on team members to work safely. Also, you must want to be involved in the community and be comfortable with community engagement, sometimes in very challenging and difficult circumstances. Personal resilience is also important as you must be prepared to help people out on the ground who are often experiencing difficult and stressful situations and so can react emotionally. Most importantly, we need people who want to get out and help people and are committed to undertaking training and regularly updating their skills. They must also have the support from their family or significant others to do this role as a SES volunteer will often

Q: What do SES volunteers do and what skills can they learn? The role of the SES has diversified and evolved over the years, and our scope has definitely broadened. We still lead on storm and flood rescue, but we can also support other agencies such as fire fighters and QPS (Queensland Police Service), which can be interesting and challenging. Our main functions locally include mountain rescue, land search, storm damage operations, chainsaw operations and general rescue. Some of the skills our volunteers can learn include how to drive a flood boat, transport and rescue people, working safely at heights, how to use a chainsaw, and how to tie ropes and knots. We have eight groups on the Sunshine Coast, with Maleny and Glass House Mountains the local groups.

Free USC course opens career options WITH many adults reassessing their career options as 2021 begins, the University of the Sunshine Coast (USC) is oﬀering a free course as an introduction to higher education to those who want to upskill or reskill. The two-day University Skills for You course is at USC’s Caboolture campus on January 28–29 and at the Moreton Bay campus at Petrie on February 2-3. Course coordinator Liz Davison said the course was ideal for anyone contemplating university or TAFE study who is unsure about what’s involved. “This USC course presents an obligation-free and cost-free opportunity for people looking towards university study as an option,” Ms Davison said.

Facilitated by experienced USC advisers, it caters for people aged 18 years and older who may have not formally studied for many years or did not ﬁnish high school. “There are no tests, assignments or exams,” Ms Davison said. “Instead, the emphasis is on helping people build their conﬁdence and develop new academic skills in a supportive grouplearning environment.” The course also focusses on helping people to recognise the transferable skills they have gained from work and life experience. “They are then taught how to turn this formal and informal learning into academic reading, writing, speaking and critical thinking skills,” Ms Davidson said. At the end of the course, participants can explore their higher education options and arrange to have individual sessions with USC advisers to help develop study and career plans. Supported training and placement opportunity in aged care HAVE you experienced barriers to employment? Do you have a genuine interest in helping older people in your community? Would you like to gain additional skills towards securing employment in aged care? A Certificate III – Individual Support (ageing, home and community) course will run two days a week for 16 weeks from mid-February at the Beerwah Hub and is being offered at no cost for eligible participants. This free course is facilitated by the Caloundra Community Centre in partnership with a registered training organisation. Local hinterland community development worker Jody Blackburn said this training opportunity was mainly focussed on supporting locals who might have struggled to gain secure employment or have experienced barriers to obtaining work due to factors such as age, loss of confidence after being out of the workforce, or linguistic or cultural challenges.

“While we are targeting support for those who have experienced barriers to employment, anyone who feels they may be eligible is welcome to contact us as participation is assessed on an individual basis,” Jody said. “As well as accredited training, we will also be oﬀering additional one-on-one training with useful job readiness skills and self-care support to ensure our participants are well set up for success.” The program had been running since 2018 in the hinterland with numerous participants gaining great outcomes including stable ongoing work in the sector. For others it has been the foundation for further study leading to a diversity of work opportunities. Speed reduction on Mooloolah Connection Road

Creative children’s book legacy By Sonia Isaacs Clark BEERWAH resident Joan Gallagher contacted GC&M News last year about a charming children’s book written by her late husband Neville. She had decided to publish the book posthumously. The book ‘Mr Leap Frog Saves the World’ is an adventurous fantasy tale filled with unexpected twists and turns that will appeal to children aged 7-11 years. Joan said that Neville worked for many years as a cutter in the clothing trade though he probably would have had preferred to have been a commercial artist. As a young man he dabbled in writing but family and work commitments meant he put his creative ambitions to one side. The couple moved to Glass House Mountains in 1991. Joan said the move ignited Neville’s creative spirit and he started doing woodwork, decoupage and poetry. In his later years, Neville spent time working on the draft of the book. Joan said she hadn’t realised he had finished it until she discovered a final copy hidden away in a footstool that Neville made. “Neville had made us a pair of footstools and one day a few months after he had passed away, I was tidying up and found the finished draft of the book,” Joan said. “I took it to bed that night and read it through, and that’s when I realised that it was too good to just leave in a draw. “I decided to get it published it because I knew kids would get a real thrill out of reading it.”

Firmly believing in the appeal of the story, Joan forwarded a copy to her ten-year old neighbour and was pleased to receive a written response from the young girl saying how much she enjoyed reading the book. “It meant a lot to me to be able to honour Neville’s creative legacy, and it’s just a nice children’s adventure that shows the quest of two animals who overcome evil with the help of other animals along the way,” Joan said. THE speed limit on Mooloolah Connection Road between Mooloolah Valley and Glenview has been reduced from 80km to 70km for safety reasons. Transport and Main Roads (TMR) North Coast regional director Scott Whitaker said the speed reduction along the 4km stretch followed a speed limit review. “The process considers a range of factors such as road function, environment, existing construction standard, prevailing traﬀic speeds and crash history,” Mr Whitaker said. “The review undertaken by TMR has been endorsed by the Sunshine Coast Speed Management Committee that includes representatives from the Queensland Police Service, Sunshine Coast Council and TMR.” Mr Whitaker said the limit reduction would occur between the 60km zone at Mooloolah Valley and the intersection with Stevens Road at Glenview. “I urge all motorists to observe the new speed limit signage and to always drive to conditions,” he said.

Speak Up Now continues positive work GC&M NEWS has reported on the great achievements of the Speak Up Now â€“ Maleny and Blackall Range committee over the past 12 months, including the installation of the ďŹ rst red bench outside the Maleny Post OďŹ€ice. The bench features a metal plaque with the wording â€˜Domestic violence: Letâ€™s change the endingâ€™ and is part of an initiative of the Red Rose Foundation, which aims to eliminate domestic and family violence (DFV) deaths.

Back to school in days gone by FROM 1886 to 1919, local sources indicate that there were an impressive number of schools scattered across the range. They included the Blackall Range School (1886), which later became Wootha School; Maleny Provisional School (1892), later named the Teutoberg Provisional State School then renamed again in 1916 to Witta State School; Maleny North State School (1898); Bald Knob State School (1902); Maleny Township School (1913), which was later known as the Maleny State School (1915); Curramore School (1913); and Booroobin School (1919).

Over time, the Maleny School became the main school and the smaller schools were closed. In the early days, travel to school was often on horseback with numerous family members sometimes travelling on the one horse. Later school buses (originally cream lorries with seats put along the back) became a more popular mode of transport. Desley Malone, from the Maleny Cultural and Heritage Society, said that she remembered when growing up that the start of the school year was always wet in Maleny.

Her recollections of back-to-school time were of big families, boggy roads, red mud and ﬂooded creeks! “One thing that I remember about school starting every new year was the wet weather. It always rained for the start of the school year, and every mother would remember getting the kids ready, then it would rain that could last for weeks, if not months,” Desley said. “Horses were later replaced by cream trucks to take the kids to school and when the Maleny factory ceased butter production, buses were bought.” Some early photos of travelling to school along the range featured families with descendants still living in the district. One photo included a young Alan Lawley, possibly at his ﬁrst year of school, and sister Evelyn. Their family were farmers living at the end of Kings Lane. There are also photos of the Bryce

Of the 28 stalls booked, only six braved the weather and reaped the benefit of good trading. Many thanks to the public who came along and supported us all. The popular card evenings held on Thursday evening at the Beerwah CWA Hall have recommenced and there is room for more players of 500 or canasta. Names must be in by 6.45pm with play from 7-10pm. Maleny family needs help to get back on their feet LATE last year the Todd family of Maleny suffered a series of unfortunate events that deeply impacted the family of nine. It left them homeless. To support the family, a GoFundMe page was established to assist them in rebuilding their life. The family - dad David Todd, mum Belinda Evans and their seven children was set to embark on the trip of lifetime around Australia in their custom-built motorhome. Shortly before their departure a truck allegedly slammed into the bus effectively writing it off. The accident happened on the day they were due to depart. Having finalised arrangements to live in the motorhome, the family were left homeless, eventually seeking temporary accommodation camping at the Maleny Showground. To add to their challenges, while camping their youngest child, one year old Vincent, pulled a hot pan of oil over himself and was rushed to hospital. Sadly the stress of the events contributed to additional trauma for David. Understandably, the family has struggled to get back on their feet. In a bid to regain independence they have been able to buy a car and are looking to secure local accommodation.

THE Glasshouse Country Senior Citizens Club oďŹ€ers social activities for the over 50s covering, but not limited to, Beerwah, Landsborough, Maleny, Glass House Mountains as well as the Sunshine Coast hinterland area. We meet on the second Tuesday of each month at the Beerwah Community Hall with refreshments provided. Our next meeting will be on Tuesday, February 9 from 8.30am. We have various outings that have included visits to Government House, Parliament House, a Noosa boat tour and luncheon, and the Esk Country Music Show. In 2021, we plan to hold our annual free morning tea in March when other seniors are invited. We will hold

Cubs care for environment

Kiddies get set for 2021 playgroup

LANDSBOROUGH Cubs camped at the Eprapah Environmental Education Centre in Victoria Point last year to learn about the impact humans are having on the environment. It was a fabulous camp with lots of opportunities for the Cubs to do hands-on learning. One of the highlights was netting samples from Eprapah Creek to see what is living in the waterways.

The Mooloolah Valley Lions Club is looking for local high school students to participate in this year’s ‘Youth of the Year’. Participants need to be aged between 16 and 18 years of age on June 30, 2021, and live in the Mooloolah Valley, Glenview, Eudlo, Landsborough or Glasshouse areas. Lions Youth of the Year is designed to encourage, foster, and develop leadership in conjunction with other citizenship qualities in our youth, at the age when they are about to enter the ﬁelds of employment or higher education, and provides students with the incentive to pay greater attention to the general qualities, so vital in developing our youths into ﬁrst class citizens.

The qualities sought, apart from academic attainments, are those of leadership, personality, sportsmanship, public speaking and good citizenship. MOOLOOLAH Valley Playgroup will start the new year with play, interactive learning and socialising. Playgroup starts on Wednesday, January 27, from 9.30–11am at the Mooloolah State School Outside School Hours Care building, King Road, Mooloolah. Little ones aged 0-5 years come together each week for a range of activities including craft, sand play, playdough, toys, puzzles, ball play, interactive learning, group reading and singing time. The friendly group of parents and carers love a chat over a cuppa and it is a fantastic way to make new friends for kids and adults. The group meets each Wednesday during school terms. It also involves community grandparents who love to help out at playgroup and get to know the kids. To ensure the playgroup is COVID safe, everyone must bring their own snacks and drinks. Anyone with ﬂu-like symptoms should hold oﬀ coming until they are well again. There is no entry fee but those attending are required to become a member of Playgroup Queensland to partly to cover insurance.

Smooth transition to High School BEERWAH State High School’s head of junior secondary school, Sandra Goldsworthy, recently provided the following advice on how parents can assist their child to make a smooth transition from primary to high school. Programs to introduce year 6 primary students to year 7 in high school started at Beerwah State High School during 2020. Year 6 students attended the school and experienced high school subjects and activities over several days. They attended an information session and school tour with their parents and, once enrolled, the students attended a day with all the students starting high school in 2021. They were placed in their classes to help them get to know their class group and rotated through an example of their day at high school. Starting high school can be exciting but can cause some nervous responses from new year 7 students. Both parents and students can prepare for a smooth transition and good habits for high school. Some tips to help include: 1. Set up a desk space with stationery, good lighting and a comfortable chair to help them settle into a homework routine. 2. Have multiple copies of their timetable and even consider taking a picture of their timetable on your phone so you have a copy. 3. Ensure they have packed their bag with stationery and books they need for the day.

4. Discuss healthy lunch options they can take to school. 5. Consider the use of a parent monitoring app to monitor your child’s use of apps that disrupt student learning. 6. Ensure they have a good bedtime routine with the phone put away early and encourage reading when going to bed. 7. Discuss their day with open-ended questions such as: “Tell me about what you learnt today”, “What positive experiences did you have today?” or “What were your learning goals today in [for example] English or maths?” 8. Ensure they arrive at school with a friend on the ﬁrst day so they are in the company of one of their buddies. Encourage your child to invite friends around to build their support friendships over time. 9. Encourage them to ask if they are lost. All of our students have been in this situation before and are happy to help. 10. Encourage your child to come to the oﬀice if they need support of any kind.

Taking care of our local environment in 2021

Glasshouse Country Tip for January WHEN Sunshine Coast Council did an audit of domestic waste bins in 2020, they found a staggering 55% of the contents was organic waste, mostly from food. When organic waste breaks down in landﬁll (no oxygen) it releases methane, one of the worst greenhouse gases. There are many ways to stop your food waste going to landﬁll and transform it into a great resource too – compost bins of all sorts, worm farms, and feeding chooks or other animals. Find what will work best for you and your family and contact our group if you need some tips.

TRYING to save the world is a big job but, as they say, if we all do a little bit it can make a diﬀerence! There are plenty of locals who are passionate about doing their bit and would love to encourage you to get involved. Here’s our top three suggestions for January:

Kael competes virtually

MEMBERS and their partners, spouses and friends enjoyed a pleasant Christmas lunch at The Orangery Maleny just before Christmas last year. The play day wasn’t really missed as the rain poured down while we chatted and distributed secret Santa gifts. A hardy group of volunteers were out to scarify, air and top-dress the lawn the following Monday. Well done all those who lent a hand in hot, steamy conditions. There was no play on Sunday, January 10, the ﬁrst possible play day this year.

Young up and coming swimmer Kael Thompson proudly represented Beerwah Swim Club at last years’ virtual Short Course National Championships.

GIVEN the disruptions to sporting events in 2020, young swimmers from Beerwah Swim Club still managed to smash out some impressive competition results. While some swimming events in December were able to be conducted in the traditional way, last years’ Short Course National Championships were held as a virtual event. Young up and coming swimmer, Kael Thompson proudly represented Beerwah Swim Club competing against others who were older and more experienced. She competed in the Multiclass category at Brisbane Aquatic Center in the virtual event competition which was a first for Australian swimming. The competitions were run in different state capitals and the times compared nationally, with the 2020 Australian short course swimming event swum as four session of timed finals from November 26-29, 2020.

Kael’s mum, Christine Peters said that across two days, first time competitor Kael swam several PB’s (personal bests) and held consistent times. “What an experience! It was a huge learning experience to compete at this level especially as a new World Record was set by the winners of each of the races that Kael competed in. At 13 she was the youngest by many years but the experience is now with her for life,” Christine said. Kael’s efforts were well received by other competitors, who were very supportive of her first- time competitor status at the championships. Christine said that Australian Olympic swim coach Michael Bohl was impressed by Kael’s efforts, and competitive swim star Mitch Larkin also offered words of encouragement. YOU A broken federation I had to visit Melbourne during Christmas and returned home to Maleny on January 7 via the Sunshine Coast airport. The Queensland Health authorities insisted that I have another COVID test and isolate myself until the results came through. Yet, while I was in Melbourne I had a COVID test on January 2 and isolated myself until January 4. The test proved negative. This meant that within a week I had to do two COVID tests, much to my inconvenience and angst. Iâ€™d like to know when the pusillanimous Morrison government is going to control recalcitrant state governments like Queensland and WA in imposing unreasonable and random quarantine regulations on travellers. After all, they have responsibility for quarantine. I agree that complacency is no friend of this virus and the quicker Hunt and Morrison start the vaccine rolling the better for all of us. But why are they delaying the roll out until mid / late February all the other aďŹ€ected countries are now well advanced in their respective vaccination programs. Roy Clogstoun Maleny

Proposed Roys Road development I refer to Joan Tuckerâ€™s letter (GC&M News, December 9): I must confess to not being aware of the shopping complex Joan refers to in Caloundra South that is allegedly well under way and accessible from Bells Creek Road. However, I donâ€™t agree that it would eliminate the arduous journey to the coast to ďŹ nd the specialty shops many of us seem to need. As for the eight minute time frame Joan mentions to get there, it may well be if you are driving a Formula One racing car, because it took nine minutes from my house in Glass House, to the Roys Road/Steve Irwin way traďŹ€ic lights, and then a further 20 minutes to drive to the end of Bells Creek road - a lot longer than eight minutes. If one observes all the road rules and speed limits I think eight minutes to this alleged new shopping complex via Bells Creek Road is way oďŹ€ the mark. Uni fee changes THE federal government has recently made signiďŹ cant changes to the way it funds universities to teach domestic students in the hope that the changes will encourage more students to study certain ďŹ elds where there are more job opportunities. Interestingly this bill was challenged in the Senate and only passed by one vote with the government supported by One Nation and Centre Alliance. So, in eďŹ€ect, a year 12 student who has set his/her goals on achieving an ATAR that will allow them to apply to a university to study a course in the humanities stream, which includes law, commerce, economics, communications and visual arts, will now be hit with a 28% increase in course fees. The thinking of our political masters is that this fee increase will cause someone who has set their sights on law or economics, for example, to now choose to become a nurse or a clinical psychologist where the fees have been reduced by 42%. Illegal fireworks HOW inconsiderate are those people who think that we all enjoy being woken up by their inane playing with ďŹ reworks. As I understand it, public ownership of ďŹ reworks is banned in Queensland. Only public displays by authorised exponents are permitted. So how do these idiots get hold of ďŹ reworks? Animal welfare I welcome the review of animal welfare laws to strengthen the protection of all animals subjected to puppy farming, terrible breeding facilities and factory farming, etc. Anything that improves the welfare of animals in my book is fantastic. An area I suggest the government can improve as well, as others noted in GC&M News, December 21 edition, is to have a system where the RSPCA and council can increase staff so they can actually monitor people who are in clear breech of animal welfare requirements. What I mean by this is if the RSPCA or council have been contacted about animal abuse or neglect, they can actually make continued regular checks on the offending people/businesses so the welfare needs of the animals in their possession are being met. I have witnessed an example of two working dogs being kept in a 3-4m enclosure with no outlook but a tin shed, who were never let out ever and were living in their own filth! I contacted the RSPCA numerous times, which to their credit they did come out and inspect and found they were living in terrible conditions, but I was told because their immediate needs, ie, being fed and watered, were

being met they didn’t have the staff to monitor them to make sure they were being let out for daily exercise or have any fulfilment to their lives. This needs to change! These dogs were going crazy literally. They had very little human contact other than food being thrown into the enclosure from outside where they would often fight to eat. It broke my heart to watch day in and out the suffering of these dogs. The owners couldn’t have cared less. This probably happens in more places than I care to think about but hopefully with new law changes and good people continuing to contact their local RSPCA when they witness terrible things this will change. lychee production season running from October through to March. Our subtropical climate is perfect for growing lychees, from Far North Queensland down to northern New South Wales. There are more than 40 varieties of lychees in Australia but the seven most common varieties grown here are Kwai May Pink, Tai So, Fay Zee Siu, Souey Tung, Kaimana, Salathiel and Wai Chee. For our region, January is prime harvest time. Gynaya Gattera from Landsborough Lychees has been busy picking and packing fruit so we can enjoy her sweet lychees. We grabbed a moment of her time to learn a little more about in-season now lychees. How many lychee varieties are there and what do you grow? There are quite a few varieties, all with a slightly different taste. We grow the Kwai May Pink variety, which are a beautiful pink colour and have a slightly smaller seed. They have a sweet, juicy flesh, which is beautiful. How long do lychee trees take to mature? We planted our trees back in 2000 and they began bearing fruit between 5-7 years later. The orchard begins to flower in late May and we begin to see fruit develop by September. September to January is our main season, with the majority of the harvest in January.

What sort of climate do they need to thrive? A warmer, tropical climate is needed so Queensland’s humidity is perfect. The early season fruit you see in the supermarkets is generally from Far North Queensland, as they fruit earlier. How do you harvest them? We hand pick each one, which keeps us extremely busy with an orchard of 2,500 trees. Each tree produces on average 40kg of fruit. What is your favourite way to enjoy lychees? Fresh is best – straight from the tree. Each punnet we sell at our stall is freshly picked that day. Recently I’ve started making lychee ice cream, which has been a huge hit with our customers. AUSTRALIANS are addicted to their mobile phones and their inability to disconnect could be endangering their health, a Monash University study shows. The ﬁrst Australian study measuring nomophobia (fear of being without your mobile phone) and its consequences showed 99.2 per cent of users had some fear of being without their phone. For 13.2 per cent of the population, the level of nomophobia is severe leading to an increased risk of dependence and dangerous use. The study, Nomophobia: Is the fear of being without a smartphone associated with problematic use, was published in the ‘International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health’. Researchers from BehaviourWorks Australia, part of the Monash Sustainable Development Institute (MSDI), surveyed 2838 Australians on their psychological attachment to their phone and usage habits. They found almost half of all participants (43.3 per cent) spent upwards of three hours a day on their phone. The more they used their phone, the higher their level of nomophobia and the greater their risk of problematic dependent, prohibited or dangerous usage. The study found users with nomophobia were 11.7 times more likely to have a problematic phone dependency and 10.3 times more likely to use their phone in a prohibited space, like a library, classroom or cinema. They were also 14 times more likely to engage in dangerous use such as while driving, cycling or walking.

Lead researcher, PhD candidate Fareed Kaviani, said phones had become part of our lives but should be used with caution. “I think we have habitualised the device into our lives, on both a structural and individual level,” Mr Kaviani said. “The fear of being without one’s mobile phone may be a rational response when we have come to rely on them for staying in contact with friends and family, using the digital wallet, scanning QR codes for entry into venues, or to read shopping lists and access information. “If your smartphone use is having a deleterious impact on your physical and/or psychological health or of those around you, then that is a problem. “But I think the device, if used mindfully, can be a complement to the super computer we already carry around in our heads,” he said.

Tick seminar • Watch out for signs or lawn grubs. If present, spray may be required to keep them in-check. • Help lavender survive the wet season by sprinkling a little lime or dolomite directly over the foliage and around the roots. • Sweet corn is one vegetable that can be planted right through until the end of February. Adequate ground preparation is the ﬁrst step and this should involve digging in animal manures and dolomite four weeks before planting. Remember to always plant sweet corn in a block rather than rows for better pollination. Plant seedlings deeply to encourage stronger roots to grow. • Parsley plants may just suddenly die. This is normal as they do fall victim to summer heat and humidity. Replant with fresh seedlings. • Red-shouldered leaf beetles are on the increase. The mustard yellow beetles have a red band on the shoulders and a spot on each wing. They can damage the leaves of a lot of garden plants and can be treated using a pyrethrum spray.
