With Monday being the day we go to print, it often means that Tuesday can be a quieter day in the office. However, last Tuesday was a definite exception to the rule. With so many events being held for Melbourne Cup locally, my team team GC&M News Melbourne Cup thought it was very much their Lea and Tina, Sonia, Wendy, Tara responsibility to get dressed up for the day and then photograph as many as possible of our lovely local ladies all glammed up. Once the work was completed the team attended Beerwah Hotel for what we call ‘Professional Development’ (well that is what we called it on the sign on the front door of the office). We were all very dedicated to the task and managed to get so many lovely photos that we have included just a selection in our two page coverage and have put together an on-line mini mag which will be available on our website on Wednesday morning from 11am, you can check it out at www.gcnews.com.au or via our facebook page. A major election commitment was launched by the Liberal National Party (LNP) last week, where LNP Leader Tim Nicholls said he would undertake major economic reforms to end Labor’s secret tax on electricity. “The LNP’s energy plan will save a typical Queensland family an average of $160 each year for the next two years,” he said. “After 2020 the savings will increase to an average $460 per year by stopping the subsidies for renewable energy. “These reforms will not only deliver cheaper electricity for households but business, farmers and industry as well.” Mr Nicholls said the LNP would provide cheaper electricity for families, businesses and industry by writing down the regulated asset base of Energy Queensland by $2 billion. “This measure will save a four-person household an average of $110 a year over the initial years and will continue to deliver savings until 2032,” he said. Mr Nicholls said another key aspect of the LNP’s comprehensive electricity reforms would include the restructure of government-owned generators back into three entities. "Currently, Queensland has the least competition of any of the major states. “Taking this action will increase competition in the energy generation market, which will drive down wholesale electricity costs by 8.3%.
Andrew Pearch from Glass House Mountains talks with Tim Nicholls (right) and Andrew Powell about the LNP’s electricity plan “The LNP has listened to Queensland families who are struggling with increasing cost of living pressures.” The LNP plan sets out eight undertakings: restructure Queensland’s generators to increase competiton and lower wholesale prices; freeze executive bonuses until electricity prices decrease; write-down the Regulated Asset Base of Energy Queensland by $2 billion; scrap the 50% Renewable Energy Target, saving households $200 a year from 2020; end subsidies for renewable energy, saving households $115 a year from 2020; build with the private sector a highefficiency, low-emissions coal-fired power station in North Queensland to boost supply, provide cheaper prices and create jobs; remove the non-reversion policy in regional Queensland so all Queenslanders have a choice about who they buy their electricity from; and put consumer representatives on the boards of our network businesses.

Pedestrian safety prioritised in Maleny
Quicker, cheaper internet options Faster, cheaper internet access for regional Queensland is on the cards with Labor to explore the use of spare capacity on publicly-owned optical fibre networks to increase competition. Minister for Innovation, Science and the Digital Economy Leeanne Enoch was in Caloundra last week, announcing their plan if relected. “By utilising the Queensland Government-owned fibre network – which stretches over 4000 kilometres – the potential exists for faster and cheaper internet access right along the east coast of Queensland and out to Mt Isa,” Ms Enoch said. “The fibre network runs up the east coast and through centres such as Mackay, Rockhampton, Cairns and Townsville – reaching as far north as Port Douglas – while also extending to centres like Toowoomba, Roma and Mt Isa. “Providing access to this extra capacity offers an opportunity for smaller, local internet service providers to enter the market, increase competition and drive down prices for regional Queenslanders.” Ms Enoch also announced a re-elected Palaszczuk Government will commit $15 million from the Jobs and Regional Growth Fund to the Sunshine Coast International Broadband Submarine Cable Project to generate local business, new investment and improve digital capacity for Queensland. “A re-elected Palaszczuk Government will back Sunshine Coast Council’s game-changing project, which will act as a catalyst for business growth and creating jobs,” she said.

"This cable will put the region on the map as an internet gateway,” he said. “It will help to provide additional capacity for Queensland businesses to engage in the global digital economy.” Labor candidate for Caloundra Jason Hunt said the international link into the Sunshine Coast would be the only link on Australia's east coast outside of Sydney. “The cable is expected to bring a faster, more reliable and more affordable broadband network to the eastern seaboard,” he said. “As a result, it is hoped the cable will attract businesses with high technology and broadband needs.”
Upcoming works at the Myrtle Street and Maple Street intersection in Maleny will improve road safety for crossing pedestrians. Pedestrians currently have to navigate a wide section of road while attempting to cross Myrtle Street. Department of Transport and Main Roads Regional Director for North Coast, Barbara Van Heerden, said many community members, including elderly residents, crossed near the intersection at the western end of Maleny’s shopping precinct. “Installing a pedestrian refuge in combination with new signage and road lighting will provide a safer crossing point for residents and visitors to the township,” Ms Van Heerden said. “The crossing upgrade will reduce potential incidents between pedestrians and vehicles and improve pedestrian access at the western end of the township. Ms Van Heerden said there would be no loss of parking as a result of the safety improvements. Construction of the $134,000 project is scheduled to begin this month.

Locals remembered Remembrance Day last Saturday was an opportunity for our local community to reflect on the lives lost to war and the service and sacrifice of our defence personnel. This year locals of all ages marked the 99th anniversary of the First World War Armistice in 1918 and services were held throughout the area with a minute's silence at 11am. People came together at our local cenotaphs and attended services organised by the RSL Subbranches of Glasshouse Country, Maleny and Beerwah and District, and schools hosted events. There was also a moving ceremony organised by the Peachester History Committee at the Peachester Cemetery to acknowledge the individuals from the Peachester and Beerwah communities that have plaques on the cemetery's memorial wall. More Remembrance Day photos will be included in the November 22 edition

State Member for Caloundra Mark McArdle has congratulated the local community for their outstanding representation in the fifth annual Caloundra Electorate Community Awards. In the largest ever showing, more than 200 people filled the CCSA Hall earlier this month to hear the winners announced for each of the nine award categories, which were selected from a record 77 individual nominations. Of the nine categories two of the winners were from the western side of the Bruce, and they were Celebrate Glasshouse Country and Jack Haspell. Beerwah Street Party took out this year’s Community Event of the Year. Organised by the group Celebrate Glasshouse, the street party is a much-loved local event that brings Hinterland residents together. “These awards are about recognising the best of the best in our community and I am continually inspired by the people who are nominated each year,” Mr McArdle said.

Arts/Business graduate earns Faculty Medal
A USC double degree in Arts and Business that included a creative advertising study tour to Vietnam has spurred a Glass House Mountains resident to start his career in academia. Lucas Whittaker, 22, earned a Faculty Medal for his grade point average of 6.66 out of a perfect 7 when he graduated from USC at its recent ceremony. Lucas is now working as a business development coordinator with USC’s Faculty of Arts, Business and Law, after previous jobs at USC in research and administration. “This role offers amazing hands-on experience as I liaise with colleagues and external stakeholders to assist in planning and coordinating faculty events,” said the 2012 Beerwah State High School graduate. He said the four-year Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Business gave him confidence, skills and career flexibility. “The study tour to Ho Chi Minh city with four other students was a definite highlight of my USC

Maleny has long had a reputation for being generous and working for positive outcomes for its community and this year’s Christmas Carnival, to be held in Maple Street on Friday December 8 from 6pm-10pm, is a great example of that! There will be the usual fun rides for kids of all ages, free face painting, amazing musical entertainment in the Maleny Community Centre, dancing in the streets with Unusual Suspects, demonstrations and performances by local groups, a huge array of stalls including food and locally made gifts/ art pieces (with free gift wrapping service provided by MCU), photos with Santa, Mrs Claus and the rein-hounds, and so much more! Planning for this year’s Maleny Street Christmas Carnival has been full of surprises for the small team of eight volunteers, Scott Kroeger, Colin and Lindel Kielly, Mark Burgunder, Jim Goulton, Tunja Cottier and Brea and Karen Shaw. Without the generous Sunshine Coast Council funding of past years, the carnival team has found ways to create a fun family night of celebration with a small budget which has been achieved through donations and sponsorship from the local community. Maleny Commerce, who hosts the event, has generously provided $2,500 and other funds have been provided by Cr Jenny McKay through her discretionary funds, Andrew Powell’s Local Heroes grants and Maleny Credit Union’s community support. The carnival team has also been grateful to the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre for sponsoring venue hire and the Glasshouse Country & Maleny News for their continued free advertising and promotion of the event. With the generous support of over 20 local businesses (so far) this year, they will have a mega ‘Christmas from Maleny’ raffle, which will be a huge wheelbarrow full of gifts for the whole family. Tickets are only $2 and available throughout town and it will be drawn on the night, with funds raised going to the Maleny Rural Fire Brigade.

Friendship through dance...it’s the best kind! Hi, Julie again! Meet your next State representative By Greg Brown
It’s hard not to notice that an election is on the way. Corflute signs along the roads, banners along fences, flyers in the letterbox, adverts in the paper... but who are all these candidates beyond a face and a slogan? If you’d like to meet them face to face and hear directly from them what they can offer, next Wednesday is the perfect opportunity before you have to vote for them on Saturday November 25. Glasshouse Country & Maleny News is organising an informal ‘meet the candidates’ evening at the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club, Wednesday November 22, 5.30pm – 7pm. All four candidates standing for the electorate of Caloundra Rod Jones – One Nation; Jason Hunt – ALP; Marcus Finch – Greens; and Mark McArdle – LNP and all five in the electorate of Glass House Tracey Bell-Henselin – One Nation; Andrew Powell – LNP; Sue Mureau – Independent; Brent Hampstead – ALP; and Sue Weber – Greens will be there. The format is not like the usual drawn out (yawn) pre-election evening where candidates bang on endlessly or answer a couple of set questions with set answers, mostly just repeating what each other says. Each candidate will give you a rundown of who they are, what they stand for and what they see as the important issues for the region. Then there’ll be an information booth style opportunity to look at what they can offer, and meet with each candidate and ask them questions you’d like answered. So put a face (and body) to a name (and slogan) and get down to the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club next Wednesday evening, November 22 from 5.30pm (til 7pm). The bar will be open, which is another good reason to come along.
Make your vote count At this election (November 25), you’ll be asked to number every box on the ballot paper – this is called ‘full preferential voting’. You number each candidate in order of who you prefer to win, from your top pick (number one) to your last pick. There will be instructions at the polling booth and on the ballot paper itself. If you have any questions, you can always just ask one of the Electoral Commission Queensland staff inside the polling station. If a ballot paper is not completed correctly it is called an informal vote. An informal vote is unable to be counted and does not contribute towards determining the election result. Some reasons a ballot paper is informal are because: it is blank or unmarked; ticks or crosses have been used when numbering in order of preferences is required; the required number of boxes have not been marked; or it has writing on it which identifies the elector. And don’t write comments on the ballot paper. You might think them witty, poignant or cutting, but no one really cares. The vote counters just count the votes, they don’t take notice of the comments and they aren’t seen by anyone who you might be directing the comments at. There are three main ways you can vote. Pre-poll voting is where you cast your ballot before the election day at one of the pre-polling stations. Locally these are at Shop 3, 15 Maple Street, Maleny; 68 Peachester Road, Beerwah (both Glass House and Caloundra electorates); and 37 Bowman Road, Caloundra. They are all open November 13-17 and November 20-23 from 9am-5pm, and November 24 from 9am-6pm. Postal voting is where you apply to the Electoral Commission of Queensland (ECQ) and are send a voting ballot which you fill out and post back to them. This can be organised via the ECQ website, www.ecq.qld.gov.au, or by calling them on 1300 881 665. Or you can turn up at any of the polling booths on November 25 – election day – and fill out the ballot paper there. Polling booths are open from 8am and close at 6pm. Look for their locations in next week’s GC&M News edition. State Election 2017 Election promises at a glance Liberal National Party (LNP) For more details on each, see www.betterqueensland.org.au 500,000 new jobs The LNP has promised to restart our state’s economy, creating 500,000 jobs across Queensland over the next decade with an economic plan for Queensland that would lower taxes for families and businesses and build the infrastructure Queensland needs. The LNP says it will deliver on their jobs target through their comprehensive policies for Queensland’s six economic drivers: tourism, agriculture, resources, construction and manufacturing, services, science and technology and education. Lowering taxes for families and businesses is at the core of the LNP’s economic plan. Cut to payroll tax The LNP has committed to lifting the payroll tax exemption threshold by $25,000 every year for the next decade so Queensland businesses pay less tax. The LNP’s plan will see the payroll tax exemption threshold increase to $1.35 million and businesses with payrolls up to $6.75 million will receive a deduction. More than 14,000 small to medium sized businesses across the state are set to benefit from the election promise to reduce taxes. Helping farmers battling high energy costs The LNP will offer a helping hand to farmers and irrigators facing high electricity costs by providing an electricity rebate on obsolete and transitional tariffs. LNP leader Tim Nicholls says farmers cannot continue to battle soaring electricity costs on their own and that’s why the LNP will introduce a “Food and Fibre Transition Payment” to primary producers on tariffs 62, 65 and 66. LNP to build dams The LNP will build more than $1.3 billion worth of critical water infrastructure and dams across the state, as well as set up a Queensland Dam Company based in regional Queensland to ensure these projects get underway. Action against domestic violence The LNP will introduce a tough new five-point plan to take real action against domestic violence. This includes: introducing a new offence of domestic violence; protecting victims of domestic violence through the court process; ‘Clare’s Law’ – disclosure of previous offending to intimate partners and family;
magistrates to rotate through a specialist domestic violence court; and a domestic violence one-stop support network. Better Bridges Program The LNP unveiled an $80 million Better Bridges Program which will see major upgrades and safety improvements to 11 infrastructure projects across the state, including $6.5 million towards upgrading King John Creek Bridge at Elimbah. The LNP’s Buy Local policy would apply to the Better Bridges Program to ensure local businesses and contractors were able to compete on a level playing field.
One Nation For more details on each, see www.onenation.com.au/policies Cutting power prices immediately If elected, One Nation in the next Parliament will allow power companies to keep the $1.3 billion a year in dividends they pay to the government so electricity prices can be cut by about 20%. Under the One Nation plan, the companies would then re-invest those funds into providing Queenslanders with cheaper power. Protecting local airports One Nation committed to protecting local airports around the state, by ensuring local airports are given 99 year leases so as they can seriously plan for the future. State Leader Steve Dickson said that many of them are under threat from the reduction of their lease terms and allowing housing developments to encroach onto airport perimeters. $1.5 billion Sunshine Coast spend One Nation have plans to axe State Government works contracts and reallocated departmental budgets to redirect the funds towards $1.5 billion worth of projects on the Coast, including $105 million in the electorate of State Leader Steve Dickson.

State Election 2017 Election promises at a glance continued from page 12 Australian Labor Party (ALP) For more details on each, see www.queenslandlabor.org Partnership to protect Noosa koala habitat The ALP will join forces with Noosa Shire Council, Noosa Parks Association and HQPlantations to protect 2,400 hectares of vital koala habitat. The $3.5 million investment needed to acquire the land will be funded by a re-elected ALP Government, together with Noosa Shire Council and Noosa Parks Association. Works for Queensland jobs program Labor will commit an additional $200 million to the jobs-generating Works for Queensland program if re-elected, bringing the total investment in the program to $600 million. “Works for Queensland has been a resounding success delivering 1300 projects and thousands upon thousands of regional jobs,” said Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk. Adani decision vetoed In a move to remove doubt about any perception of conflict, Premier Palaszczuk announced that Labor will exercise its “veto” to not support the Federal Government’s Northern Australia Infrastructure Facility (NAIF) $1 billion loan for the Adani coal mine. “As we are in caretaker mode, a decision like this requires the support of the Opposition Leader,” she said. “I will be asking Mr Nicholls to endorse my decision.” Funds to attract major events Labor will invest an additional $36 million over three years to attract more events to draw more tourists and create more jobs across Queensland. Ms Palaszczuk said that major events deliver tourists and they deliver jobs. $1 billion Bruce Highway Trust The Palaszczuk Government says a new Bruce Highway Trust overseeing investment of $1 billion a year to improve the state’s longest transport and economic artery will help build on record exports and create jobs. The ‘Future-proofing the Bruce’ policy would (amongst other things) establish the Bruce Highway Trust to identify priorities through a 15-year forward plan and invest $1 billion in projects delivering long-term planning certainty under five-year action plans; and commit $200 million annually to the Trust and provide an initial injection of $175 million for targeted productivity-boosting, safety and flood resilience projects.
Rural Economies Centre of Excellence A collaborative bid of four universities, the University of Southern Queensland, Central Queensland University, James Cook University and the University of Queensland, has been selected to jointly host the $3 million Rural Economies Centre of Excellence. The core focus of the centre will be to drive innovation in Queensland’s rural and regional economies, in particular ensuring that agriculture-based economies realise their high value potential. Rural job creation A $10 million grants program to create and support jobs in rural Queensland will be a key priority for a re-elected Palaszczuk Government. Grant programs will include rural economies, food innovation and productivity, rural business, rural cooperatives, rural renewable energy and rural community connection. Wild dog fencing A re-elected Palaszczuk Government will allocate a further $5 million over two years to continue the war on wild dogs that is reinvigorating Queensland’s sheep and wool industry.
The Greens For more details on each, see greens.org.au/qld $600 saving on energy bills Under the Queensland Greens ‘Power for People’ policy, households will save up to $600 a year on their power bills, through cracking down on the profits made by state-owned energy companies and abolishing private electricity retailers. “By scrapping private electricity retailers and transitioning state-owned energy companies to non-profit public authorities that focus on delivering cheap, clean and reliable electricity, we will save households $600,” they said. Universal social housing plan The Queensland Greens have announced their plan to establish a universal housing scheme for Queensland, building one million affordable homes by 2050. The Greens will establish a Queensland Housing Trust that will build 200,000 affordable homes in the first 10 years and one million homes by 2050. Their plan will result in the social housing list being eliminated within three years. Greens to tax vacant buildings Under the Greens, houses and apartments left deliberately vacant in Brisbane will be taxed 5% every year, raising $800 million over five years. The Greens will use the $800 million raised to create universal access to housing and help build one million affordable homes.

The Coochin Creek Bushland Group meets on the third Tuesday of each month from February to November to carry out conservation work in the Upper Coochin Creek Environmental Reserve in Beerwah. They will be holding their last working bee for the year on Tuesday November 21. A group spokesperson said: “All are welcome to join us. During this working bee we will be concentrating on eradicating the weed Ochna in the reserve. Ladies embrace Pink Night What started out as a resident hosting a handful of ladies in her lounge to raise some money quickly turned into a night to remember, thanks to a dedicated group of residents. With just under 100 guests (ladies only) attending, the evening consisted of raffles, trivia, an auction, delicious food cooked by a number of residents, entertainment and a lot of fun. Walking into the room it wasn’t hard to see what the night was about, with everyone getting in to the theme with pink everywhere, from the beautifully decorated tables to the residents dressed up in wigs and clothes that haven’t made an appearance since the 70s. This was truly a community event with 55 donations of prizes made from residents, community members and businesses. It really goes to show that everyone has been touched by cancer.

Members of the Landsborough Adventist Community Church recently held a thanksgiving auction night to help raise funds for Morris House Neighbourhood Centre and the local school chaplaincy group. Contributed by Senior Constable Susan Lowndes (Beerwah) There were labradors in scarves, pugs in dresses, cow dogs, poodles, chihuahuas in hats and many more fabulous pooches at our recent Dogs on Patrol event. About 100 dogs and their families came to Skippy Park for the event on Saturday morning, November 4. Dogs on Patrol is a initiative aimed at encouraging people to be aware of their surroundings while they are out walking their four legged friends, both for their own safety and to help be the eyes and ears of the community for police. Dog walkers are ideally placed to notice changes in their neighbourhoods as they go about their routine and are encouraged to report any suspicious behaviour to police. Saxon and Ketchie enjoyed the day and competed in the Best Junior Handler, and they are pictured here with officers from Beerwah Station and their dirt bikes. Thanks to everyone who came along and supported the event including our stall holders: Neighbourhood Watch, Crime Stoppers, Sunshine Coast Council, Sunshine Coast Animal Refuge, Koala Rescue, and Lions for their sausage sizzle. Recently a letter writer from Landsborough responded to my letter re Dual Citizenship, as my letter was about politicians who nominated for election it really doesn’t matter to me how many passports the letter writer holds. However, what I am concerned about is how someone could be in charge of a government department and not know what is going on with their own citizenship? The Australian High Court made the correct decision. I also have a question regarding the recent Same Sex Marriage Survey. Did you notice that it is strictly confidential? Yes, that's correct, “Strictly Confidential”. My question is: then why is each and every paper numbered? My wife had a completely different number from myself as did two of my friends, but each notice was in fact numbered. For what reason would they need that? Maybe our Federal Member of Parliament might make an inquiry and explain the reason why the papers were numbered and for what reason. I look forward to the finding out. to this day. It was the Palazczuk Government that called for an enquiry in 2016 when the neglect by management of the Queensland Rail metropolitan train service became obvious. Subsequently the Strachan Commission of Enquiry into Train Crewing Practices and Queensland Rail Governance revealed the extent of management neglect and lack of governance by the then Newman LNP Government. It was the Newman LNP Government that contracted with Bombardier for the new train sets, (Hansard 2013_11_20_Weekly) with little or no consultation with the frontline people who were to crew them and who knew the Queensland Rail network operations intimately (RTBU Advocate Autumn 2015). This created another layer of complexity and poor project management without regard to future management or staffing issues. Is it any wonder therefore, that soon after the Palazczuk Government inherited a total mess from the Newman LNP Government, that the train service started to fail? The Strachan Report clearly shows that there were systemic issues with train crewing and recruitment, inadequate training on new train sets, poor management practices by Newman LNP Government-appointed Queensland Rail executives, and the list goes on. The Strachan Report (www.strachaninquiry.qld. gov.au/assets/commission-ofinquiry-report-trainscrewing-report.pdf) is well worth reading. It clearly sets out what needs to be done to bring Queensland rail services back to an acceptable level by 2018. Unfortunately, it will take time to recover from what was a pig’s ear left by the Newman LNP Government. Those are the facts, Mr Powell. Labor is cleaning up your mess. Ken Dyer Landsborough

Re Andrew Powell’s facts – his first fact states that Downer pulled out of the running to build the new trains. This is true as reported in Hansard. It is also

true that Anna Bligh was premier and Annastacia Palaszczuk was transport minister. Mr Powell attempts to make a connection between the two facts, but this can best be described as coincidence. Hansard states “…Downer EDI have today decided to pull out of a global tender to provide Queensland Rail with 200 three-car sets…”. Perhaps Downer pulled out of the tender process because it was global, but it did not mean that no other Australian companies could bid, as is suggested by Mr Powell. The Brisbane Times, (October 20, 2017) stated that the contract for the new trains was signed in 2013 by then-treasurer Tim Nicholls and then-transport minister Scott Emerson. The new trains are being built in India and have been reduced to 75 six-car sets, a reduction of 150 carriages. They started arriving in March this year and, as reported in The Brisbane Times, came with 480 design problems. These include no accommodation for the guard or provisions for people with disabilities. This is why, according to Mr Powell and the article from the Rail, Tram and Bus Union that he referred to, “Transport Minister Jackie Trad has changed the new train designs.” She had to! Mr Powell tries to gain some traction by stating that “Labor awarded the contract to deliver the Gold Coast Light Rail trams to the same company that they are now attacking – Bombardier.” I do not know if Labor is attacking this company, but I do know that Bombardier is an international company based in Canada and that the trams were built in Germany. They weren’t built cheaply in India. Mr Powell did get one thing right though. He states that “SEQ’s rail system needs urgent attention.” Trouble is, I have heard this lots of times from politicians of all persuasions over many years. Brad Boustead Glenview
Doesn’t ring true
The Labor campaign slogans do not ring true. Annastacia Palaszczuk will not support the loan to build the rail service for Adani Mine and if she gives in to Greens pressure to scuttle the proposed mine, would not provide the jobs she promises. How can she say she is standing up for Queenslanders; how would Labor plan to pay for their election promises? The LNP’s support for Adani Mine and revenue raising royalties on coal sales, plus the building of a North Queensland low-emissions coal-fired power station, would provide many jobs for Queenslanders and the means to pay for services needed throughout Queensland.
Consolidating your debts the benefits and pitfalls Having multiple loans can creep up on you. Let’s say you took out a personal loan for a holiday you couldn’t quite afford outright when you were younger. Perhaps a year or two later you took out a car loan because the weekly repayments sounded far easier than a $40,000 lump sum. Combining several debts into one single loan, otherwise known as debt consolidation, can make good financial sense as well as significantly lowering the stress load of managing such a hectic financial schedule. into one loan are varied. These can be; less paper work, you only receive one set of statements.The convenience of dealing with just one lender. One monthly repayment, making budgeting easier to keep track of. Saving on loan fees and charges by paying them on just one loan. Potentially a lower interest rate, particularly if you use your home loan to consolidate debt, which can create significant financial savings overall. This all sounds like a no brainer so far. However, there can be pitfalls too, including lender fees, you may need to pay application fees or exit fees if you are taking out a new loan or getting out of an existing home loan early. Government charges, some duties and taxes may apply if you are using your home loan to consolidate your debt. If you are
extending the length of a loan, for example moving a personal loan of 5 years onto a 30 year home loan, the overall interest charge will be much greater unless you continue to make the same cumulative repayment amounts as prior to the consolidation. Clearly, every situation is different and it’s essential to do the calculations to determine if debt consolidation is right for you. A good mortgage adviser will be able to help you crunch the numbers, look at available loan options and their features, and determine the best loan solution for your unique situation. They will also be able to assist you in creating an ongoing financial management plan, which is essential in successful debt consolidation to ensure you save money over the long term and don’t get caught out by the pitfalls.
Debt consolidation is worth considering if you have multiple debts, particularly if you are going through financial hardship. More competition in supply of electricity would force down the price of power for the general community and industry. Action to reduce the costs of electricity is conspicuously missing from Labor’s plan. Queensland’s businesses struggle to survive under the burden of costs and union disruption, and Labor’s plan offers nothing to help businesses employ more people. When Labor provides more front line services, Queensland takes on further debt and Labor raids Superannuation Funds and Electricity Generator dividends. Would Labor increase state stamp duties on insurance or increase state registration fees such as car rego to meet the costs of their election promises? Annastacia Palaszczuk would also make us pay for government borrowings through the loss of the AAA rating because she chooses to meet the demands of her friends, the fat-cat union officials and Greens who are not putting Queenslanders first! Nothing to celebrate
Many Hinterland residents will have been excited to read the announcement from Mark McArdle and Andrew Powell that the LNP will build the Sunshine Coast rail duplication between Beerburrum and Nambour (GC&M News, November 8). Unfortunately there’s nothing to celebrate. The LNP doesn’t have the money to pay for the project. It hopes the Federal Government will come to its rescue. It might. But not before 2020 at the earliest, when the project will have to compete with other rail projects around Australia for federal funding – so no guarantee there. So the project has no start or finish date. The scope hasn’t been agreed. It’s just wishful thinking presented
as a promise. An election time promise, at that. Mark McArdle/Andrew Powell don't explain how it would be paid for either. Overall the LNP has to find some $21b to fund the projects and promises it has made to date. Last time, the Newman/Nicholls Government managed this by making large, unannounced cuts to frontline services by sacking teachers, nurses, etc, after it was elected. What has happened to our Australian society that some people cannot tolerate freedom of speech anymore? In the second week of the state election campaign, the LNP have had banners and signs either stolen or damaged. These were purchased through supporters and members fundraising for the state election to help re-elect Andrew Powell. These actions of stealing are illegal. I’d like to respond to a few of the ‘wild’ claims made in the letter submitted by Olive Hockings in last week’s Glasshouse Country & Maleny News. The letter claims that Labor under-funds ‘the critical needs of child care, health and aged care, rail, road and other infrastructure’. Nothing could be further from the truth. When Tim Nicholls was Campbell Newman’s Treasurer and Andrew Powell was a Minister, they cut 112 nurses and midwives from the Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service. That’s 112 frontline health workers, caring for the sick, the elderly and the mothers of the Sunshine Coast. Sacked … this was disgraceful behaviour. The Palaszczuk Labor Government restored and improved our region’s health staffing, and in the next term of Government has committed to recruit an additional 260 nurses and 12 midwives for our region. During this term of Government, Premier Palaszczuk opened the new Sunshine Coast University Hospital – a project commenced under Labor and delivered by Labor. And just to our south, the Caboolture Hospital is set to receive a $253 million upgrade, increasing its bed capacity from 260 to 390. That is serious investment in our health services, and a genuine sense of care for the health of our residents. You’ll only get that level of commitment to public health under a Labor Government. Cents for Centenary really add up!
Contributed by Debbie Roberts At Beerburrum State School recently, the final coins were dropped into money boxes for the Cents for Centenary Fundraiser. The competition between classes began on April 22 to mark the 12 month countdown to our school centenary to be held on Sunday April 22, 2018. Six months later we are pleased to announce that the children from our five classrooms have raised $526.35 – a grand effort! On parade there was much excitement as students and staff eagerly awaited the announcement of the Pizza Party winner for the class who raised the most money. Prep/1 were the very excited winners and look forward to celebrating together.

The day’s celebrations kicked off by having a parade that was full of wonderful words and entertainment for our special guests, including a performance from the choir and the Spanish dancers. After the parade, grandparents and volunteers went back to their grandchildren’s classes and enjoyed seeing where they learn. Students in the classrooms set up many varied activities such as board games, puzzles, quizzes, painting, collage, drawings, computers and books. The students engaged with the special guests and some of the students tried to claim the grandparents as their own. After their class time with the students, the grandparents and volunteers headed back to the hall for a special morning tea organised by the staff members. From your councillor On the agenda at the annual Local Government Authority Queensland conference was that very hot topic of residential properties for short-term accommodation booked through online agencies.
What’s being talked about in our community? Why are only some rural roads sealed?
What’s being done about dusty roads?
Literally, I could die in the dust over this issue. There have been some achievements under the implementation of the Rural Roads Policy to address the need for more sealed roads in the hinterland. This policy has been developed to establish which roads hold priority over others. Data that includes traffic numbers, heavy vehicle usage, connection to town centres and school bus routes is analysed to ensure that the roads in most need are prioritised. While this does not seal a road, it ensures that there is objectivity around the priority of the road to be sealed, and it guards against loud lobbyists holding sway.
Sunshine Coast University has partnered with council to trial alternative dust suppressants suitable for some rural roads.
There are many thousands of Sunshine Coast residents and holidaymakers who would love to use public transport more often, and ease the traffic on our roads, if better travel options were available.
Speed limits on rural roads I share residents’ frustrations with speed limits on rural and hinterland roads and understand that many wish to change them. In Queensland, speed limits are set under the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices. Council determines speed limits on roads under its control in line with these guidelines.
Providing an efficient public transport service is the responsibility of the State Government, but successive governments have spent too little for too long on rail and public transport in our region. Your council is committed to strongly advocating for progress with new and improved services.
Parking problems
We are joining our residents and our business community in urging our local State members to commit to providing a better public transport system so we can reduce road congestion and improve connectivity across our region.
Additional parking is often difficult to address in the hinterland. Council has just completed the Sunshine Coast Parking Management Plan that embraces recommendations, including the use of more public transport. Please continue to support the hinterland buses as we fought long and hard to have a permanent service. Council is mindful of its legislative requirement for Disability Parking and of the needs of the users of these parks.

Closer to home, I am lobbying for intersection upgrades at Western Avenue, Montville and at Jubilee Drive and Chevallum Road, Palmwoods. Improving access to Conondale Memorial Park is still needed along with an upgrade of the rail line through our railway towns and improvements to telecommunications in the hinterland and Conondale Ranges. You have my assurance that I will remain focussed on all of these issues until they are resolved.
Funding has been increased in the 2017/18 financial year but still fails to meet the growing costs of sealing rural roads in our division.
It’s quite a process to change a speed limit, requiring sign-off by representatives from Queensland Police, the Department of Transport and Main Roads and council staff in accordance with the Australian Standards. You’ll find more information about this on council’s website. Meanwhile motorists should drive to the speed limit and road conditions because lowering the speed, if possible, without policing it will not make the roads safe. Only motorists can do this.
Sunshine Coast is Australia’s fifth largest council and our region requires a far superior public transport system to the one we have in 2017.
We also want the State to undertake an immediate review of the legislation and regulations for council procurement so that it is more adaptive to an evolving digital environment, more responsive to innovative proposals and products and more supportive of start-ups and entrepreneurialism.

Note from the Mayor
I have been proactive securing three trials in Division 5 but unfortunately, although the methodology seemed sound, all failed shortly after implementation. The only solution to the long running dust problem is a significant investment by council into the Road Sealing Program.
We want the government to require booking agencies to supply councils with property addresses. This will help ensure these properties comply with planning schemes and rating requirements. Councils need to have a clear policy position regarding this matter. What do you think?

Things2Do Hot swinging jazz
The Sunshine Coast Jazz Club will be presenting the Caxton Street Jazz Band on Sunday December 2 at the Power Boat Club, Golden Beach, from 2pm-4.30pm, with doors open 12.30pm for lunch. The Caxton Street Jazz Band members include some of Australia’s leading jazz players as well as instrumentalists who are vocalists. While their roots are firmly planted in the hot jazz of the early 1900s, many other influences are represented including big band swing, mainstream jazz, folk, country, rhythm and blues and popular tunes from the 30s, 40s and 50s – hence their unprecedented popularity in recent years. Recycling fun for the kids
While there are always plenty of interesting things to look out for and purchase at Recylerama for the grown ups, at the next event there will also be something special for the kids. Marc the Joyologist will be conducting some engaging workshops for the smaller visitors. They will be able to get involved in making musical instruments from recycled PVC pipe – rhythm percussion-sticks. Marc’s workshops are playful and based around sharing and caring and natural, fun expression through music, artistic creativity, and drama play. Recyclerama Antique Fair and Monster Carboot Sale is on Saturday November 25 at the Maleny Showgrounds from 7.30am to 3pm. Workshops will start at 10am. Entry is $5 and kids are free. Jazz up voting day with a treasure hunt and some great workshops.

Santa Paws is coming to Sunshine Coast Animal Rescue Service (SCARS) this Sunday, November 19, from 9am-1pm. Bring along your rescued pets and all your other pets to get a great Christmas family portrait memory. The day will kick off at 9am and end at 1pm. To make sure you don’t miss out, SCARS is encouraging people to call and book your time by phoning 5494 5275. There will be food, cakes and drinks, shade and water and they will also be Cody and Rosie with Santa Paws holding a plant/linen sale on the day along with raffles, calendars and lots of SCARS merchandise to buy to help support the SCARS cats and dogs at Christmas time. Penny Brischke said SCARS is an independent, not-for-profit charity that cares for up to 50 dogs and 70 cats at any one time and saves 1,000 cats and dogs every year. “We also have a special wishing tree for our cats and dogs!” she said. “So, if people pop into the office, they can choose a cat or dog to buy a Christmas treat for on Christmas day. “Last year this really went off, with the volunteers opening lots of treats and toys for the cats and dogs on Christmas morning. It was a great time for people and the animals.” About 120 volunteers help run the refuge, which receives no recurrent government funding. The Sunshine Coast Animal Refuge is located at 28 Sippy Creek Road, Tanawha.
Movies Graduation at Maleny
In the film ‘Graduation’, which screens at the Maleny Community Centre this Saturday, November 18, at 7.15pm, a respected doctor returns to Romania after the overthrow of the dictator Ceausescu. But he is deeply disillusioned by endemic corruption. Perhaps his daughter can have a better life: success in an exam will win her a place at Cambridge University. Success becomes unlikely when the girl is attacked, so he decides to pull a few strings, the first in a series of moral compromises. One reviewer notes, “there are few obvious villains… just people who have trouble looking at themselves in the mirror”. This tense, multi-faceted and naturalistic film won Cristian Mungiu a Best Director award at Cannes. This exposé of problems in a post-communist country has a wider relevance, showing how a culture of secret deals and personal connections can undermine any society. This film has subtitles. Catering on Saturday night, from when the doors open at 6pm, is by Wild Rocket, and there will be a drinks bar and tea and coffee stand. Tickets are available at the door for non-members. Thinking of buying? Hi everybody, Dan Clarke from First National Beerwah here. The property market is in full swing and buyer activity is at an all-time high as the run up to Christmas begins. If you are thinking of buying, I thought it might be worth passing on some handy hints and information from my Sales Associate Jamie Bayliss and a few of our local property professionals about what we are seeing and feeling in our local market space. Speaking with Jamie, he has found that in recent months the feedback from our buyers is that they are often missing out on properties as the current market is moving incredibly rapidly. What we are seeing is that properties, especially around the sought after liss Jamie Bay Hinterland areas, are going under contract incredibly quickly. A great tip for potential buyers is, when you find the top listing agent in your preferred area of choice, it’s a good idea to keep in touch with them and use only that agent – this way you already have an established relationship with the key contact in the area and you can access opportunities quickly. We have also seen that some brokers are not getting valuations on properties ordered quick enough which are then causing problems with properties going unconditional. These valuations need to be ordered no more than 10 days into a contract that is 21 days till the unconditional date. So it is really important that you stay on top of your broker. Another important tip to consider is availability of internet connection.

Did you know that in our local area wait times for connections can be as long as two years if a port is unavailable?! So make sure you contact your internet provider as soon as your contract is unconditional, if not before, to let them know that you have purchased a property and to have the port held. Finally, the ‘First Home Buyers Grant’ is due to run out in December of this year (it has been renewed over the last 12 months every 6 months, so there is a chance it will be renewed again). We are not at peak price yet so there is a strong chance that if you are looking to invest you will still see a strong return in the immediate future. I also had a chat with local finance professional Josh Carleton from SMS Finance to get an update on the current finance sector. Interestingly, for the 14th consecutive month the RBA has held the cash rate at 1.5%, yet Josh Carleton the banks continue to yo-yo their interest rate offering to consumers. Currently, regulators such as APRA and ASIC continue to have their sights set on the housing market and their goal is to ensure borrowers are not put into a financial hardship situation. Although I support this goal, it does have some downsides, with most of the focus and regulative restriction based around information out of two major capital cities (Sydney and Melbourne). There has been a cap put on the banks’ ability to supply investment and interest only lending and this has forced lenders to make major adjustments, but at whose cost? In these segments, interest rates are on the rise. We are seeing clients drop their interest rate by up to 2% through simply switching from ‘interest only’ to ‘principle and interest’ repayments.
We are also seeing smaller lenders jump at this opportunity to provide completive investment lending products which others with large investment lending history cannot provide. I encourage everyone with an investment or interest only mortgage to review it with your current lender or local mortgage broker. It can save you thousands in the long run. Another area I’ve been working closely with is, when a property goes under contract it’s time for the building and pest inspection, so we’ve spoken with Ross Mackay from Insight Building Inspections to highlight some common inspection report issues worth keeping an eye on – especially in older properties. A lack of maintenance in shower recesses, particularly sealant, can cause issues. It is worth assessing the property drainage overall and ensuring that it is good. Termite damage from lack of protection is always a concern and ideally you want to see a current termite plan in place. Other points to consider include potential damage to down pipes from whipper snippers, rusty roofs and screws, and whether gutters are clean and if preventive measures are in place. Now that your citrus has finished fruiting and is flowering again, it’s critical that you take some extra care to ensure that next season’s crop is the best that it can be. Citrus have a sort of in-built memory and if the conditions are harsh when they flower and then just after flowering, they believe that those conditions will be consistent through until they set fruit. So, from flowering to a couple of weeks after petal drop, you need to make sure that your citrus are watered each week and are given one application of a suitable fertiliser. It wouldn’t hurt to get the kids to have a wee around the tree as well – a good source of nitrogen. This will give the tree the feeling that it’s okay to produce a lot of flowers. The tree will also hold onto the small developing pea-sized fruit and not drop them early. It’s not a bad idea to also treat your trees to a sprinkling of citrus trace elements, which will give them the micro-nutrients, such as boron, manganese and zinc, which they need to stay healthy. Once the fruit have started to form, it’s quite natural for a lot of them to fall off. As fruit take a lot of energy to create and grow, the plant can only support so many of them before the tree starts to suffer from malnutrition. So to counter this, the tree sheds fruits throughout the year, leaving the best and strongest fruits to grow to maturity. One problem often encountered as they develop is fruit splitting. This is generally a result of extreme fluctuations in soil moisture and fertiliser levels. So to deal with this, make sure you only fertilise when recommended and even out the watering so that you don’t saturate the soil then totally dry it out before rewatering again. If the fruit this season was dry inside, it shows that there could be a lack of boron in the soil. Apply a boron drench to the soil to correct it for next season. Thick skins can be a sign of too much nitrogen and not enough potash (potassium). Apply some sulphate of potash and a slowrelease fertiliser instead of the standard soluble citrus fertiliser. Potassium is also needed to promote good fruiting, with a deficiency leading to the development of small fruits. Citrus are shallow rooted trees, so it’s important to mulch around them well to maintain soil moisture and to protect the roots from disturbance. To prevent the risk of root burn when fertilising, I usually fertilise on top of the mulch – rather than the usual practice with other trees of raking back the mulch, spreading fertiliser and then raking the mulch back on top.

Bushfood Christmas This year, consider adding really local flair to your Christmas feast. There’s a range of bushfoods that will be available during the festive season and here’s a few ideas to make your celebrations exciting and unique. Lemon myrtle (Backhousia citriodora) leaves are available all year round and can be used for both sweet and savoury. Cold lemon myrtle tea is very refreshing and we enjoy it most when its added to unsweetened pineapple juice and mineral water. It’s a fantastic accompaniment to seafood and can be used as easy as including whole leaves with your baked fish. Riberry (Syzygium luehmannii) are setting fruit at the moment and will ripen in large clusters of juicy red berries in late December. These amazing lillypillies have an edible seed that resembles cloves when cooked. Glaced riberry are delicious in fruitcakes and sauces. Tamarinds (Diploglottis sp) will be ripe and ready soon and provide a wonderfully sour ingredient for jams, chutneys, sauces and syrups. Native tamarind syrup poured over pavlova, panna cotta or pancakes is fantastic. Aniseed myrtle (Anetholia anisata) leaves can add a piquant liquorice flavour to pastries and biscuits. And it makes wonderful shortbread. Davidson plums (Davidsonia sp) produce plentiful plums of deep ruby red colour and richly sour flavour. These plums can be used for savoury chutneys and sweet jams and sauces. Davidson plums can also be added to marinades and roasts of beef and lamb and are a perfect companion to kangaroo. From the churches In The Bible there is a famous and relevant record which is called Naboth’s vineyard. The account goes that there was a man named Naboth whose vineyard adjoined the king’s palace. The king, Ahab, really wanted to have the vineyard, but Naboth wouldn’t sell. So Queen Jezebel took matters into her own hands. She massaged the court system and had Naboth executed for treason and then took the vineyard. It’s a sobering story for many reasons. One is the dangers of an unrestricted government that is not ruled by law or accountable to anyone. According to the ‘Biblical Archaeological Review’, it appears as if archaeologists have just uncovered a site in Jezreel, Israel, that they think is Naboth’s vineyard. For starters it’s in the right location and from the right time. It is also just below a military fortress. Although Biblical translations speak of Ahab’s ‘palace’, the Hebrew word heikal is better translated as ‘military structure’, which is

Chris Johnson Glasshouse Country Baptist Church precisely what archaeologists have discovered up on the hill just above the ancient winery at Tel Jezreel. It’s not the first time archaeologists have uncovered something that gives credence to The Bible’s reporting of history. Archaeologists have also uncovered a number of seals (the ancient equivalent of credit cards) of a number of kings and dignitaries mentioned in The Bible. Even places like Peter’s house, the tomb of Jesus, as well as the birth place of Jesus, are considered by most archaeologists to be the actually historic sites. There is a lot of historical and archaeological evidence that is consistent with The Bible being a reliable and accurate historical record of events. Jesus made the point in a parable that if people did not believe what The Bible said about God and about the spiritual dimension of life, then even if God did something absolutely spectacular like raise someone from the dead, people would not believe. The Bible is consistent in its claim to accurately report the things we can see and investigate. Surely then, there is an excellent chance it is accurate when it talks about the things we cannot see. an Australian Christian Church

There was lots of lovely food, games and laughter and of course the race. Others gathered at Club Glass House and enjoyed a fun filled day there too. Nathan brings a range of qualities and experience to the role as he has been coaching in the Brisbane Premier League for the past two years, taking his team to grand finals. His very competitive nature and professional attitude, teamed up with his belief in loyalty to your club and the game, make Nathan the perfect fit for our family focussed club. The day started off pretty wet but thankfully we got through to the end. The winners of the day with the highest winning margin of + 19 were Jo Siegle, Dean Shaw and Ross Siegle. Runners up on + 16 were Marilyn Podmore, Sue O’Hagan and Barry Kirk. The lucky draw went to Bob Bloomer, Rae Farrell and Ann White. The $600 jackpot draw and + 18 came out of the barrel so no winners. We will be back the second week in February next year so get your teams down early. Friday, December 10: the 7pm Scroungers had a great turnout of 18 players for its second week of scroungers, the winner of the night was Viv James. Sunday, November 12: The Diggers played the

Civvies with over 25 members enjoying a game of bowls with the Diggers being too good for the Civvies winning 147-103. In third place on countback were Jenny Morris, Darryl Goschnick and Rob Scullion with two wins + 34 score winning 16 ends. Second place were Ron Rix, Chris Dougan and Wendy Platt with two wins + 34 winning 19 ends. First place with win + 43 score were Chloe Runge, Dennis Hume and Jimmy Tatum. Rod Platt accepted the trophy on behalf of the winning Diggers side. It was a great day, thanks to everyone for their support. The final Police Bowls day will be Sunday, December 3, start time will be about 11.30am with a cost of only $7 for the game. If you would like to stay for lunch with the Police Bowlers also at around 2pm, the cost will be another $23 and includes a meal and dessert. Place your name down at the club.
Maleny Bowls Club Contributed by Graeme Glover What a great week for the club, with many people contributing to a full week of bowls and celebrations. Tuesday November 7: We had great weather for our morning bowls. This event was won by Scott Alexander, Jim King and Miles Allen. No one was lucky enough to win the jackpot draw. Wednesday November 8: Weather played a part in Wednesday night bowls with the games being shortened by the misty rain. Lucky draw winners were Dave Coffey, Harold Hopper and Graeme Glover. Plum Pudding Day was fantastic, with some saying the best ever. I say thank you to all who contributed by playing your part in doing so much preparation and on the day work. The club was presented in beautiful fashion to our many visitors. There were 64 bowlers who played two games, as well as having a wonderful lunch. The eventual winners were from the Caloundra Bowls Club. Thanks to all for your support. At events when so many do so much it is a risk to thank individuals, but I would like to say thank you to Kay Gesch, whose efforts in gathering the support of all members was unbelievable. Thank you, Kay. The running of the bowls section of the day was done with precision and teamwork, thanks must go to Sandra Kapertanic. Those folks who went the extra mile, you know who you are, thanks. Friday November 10: Scroungers was well supported with some familiar faces returning from holidays abroad. Winners were Joe Walters, Rob Norris, Ray Pantlin and Steve Lawrence. Saturday afternoon we held the annual Scottie Fawkes Memorial Bowls Event. What a great afternoon for our members. We had two rounds of triples followed by a great social get together to talk about how good or not so good our bowls were while we shared a meal and drinks. Thanks go to Les and Linda Fawkes for sharing this with us at MBC. It was community at its best. A reminder to get monies and bookings in to the club for our Presentation, Paella and Pie Evening on Friday December 1. I hope to see you all making full use of your club's facilities by coming in for a game of bowls or a social drink at any of our events. All welcome. See you on the green.

The gathering dark clouds finally let go with a heavy deluge just as the last group finished. Marshall Caldwell continued his run of fine results. He won A grade with an excellent 68 from Kev Hickman, 70. B graders staged an exciting finish – four players tied on 71. When the countback smoke cleared, Keith Murray won from Greg Pilans. Bob Reid and Ray Lloyd unfortunately missed out. Rod Tilden, our Friday Chook Run organiser, won C grade on 67 by two strokes from Col Wood. NTPs: 2 - Murray Hall, 5 -John Saussehrd, 16 Wayne Burnett,18 - Lea Garner. On Saturday we played another tiger two ball, officially known as a two ball multiplier Stableford. Regular partners Graham Rimmer and Lindsay Bartel scored an excellent 85 points to beat Greg Bartlett and Ash Graham by five points. NTPs: 2 - Col Wood, 5 - Stewart Meredith, 16 Paul Willett, 18 - Steve Hand. In the mixed tiger, John/Wendy Russell also shot 85 to record an even bigger win over Sharon Phillips/Col Baker on 74. Contributed by Pauline Fraley Finals fever The Wikings travelled down to Washington Street in the paddy wagon to face our finals team, Nambour Nambas. After a hard fought fight, we were up 6 sets to 4 going into the last 2 sets. However, the Wikings prevailed, winning overall and were crowned the Division 3 Champs, Division 2 here we come. For 2017, Maree won best aggregate for the year and No John got the best average, fantastic guys. The team were great, not only the best looking but with wonderful Wiking humour. We have been playing together for 8 years, and each year we get better and have more and more fun, more like a family than a team, thank you Wikings. Glenn, you Tongan, No John No you beauty, Moser you big Moser, Mike, No Knees Robo Knees John, Get everything Maree and then some, Stacey you need new sunnies, Pauline our one and only, Lobster the retriever, Kev we still need talk and Paul oh Paul. Witta Wompoos took on the Gympie Silver team in the Division 2 final at Nambour Showgrounds on
Sunday. Gympie had lead the competition from the start of round one in February right through to going into this final, while Wompoos had fought hard over many months to haul them in and eventually book the challenger's place in the finals. And what a final it proved to be with some very tough sets early in the match until Wompoos in the end demonstrated some very tenacious tennis and cleaned up the last of the sets to run out convincing winners by 9 sets to 3 sets. There are so many players to thank and congratulate over a season that lasted from February until November. They all know who they are and how appreciative the Witta Tennis Club is of their wonderful performances during 2017. Have a welldeserved rest now, then let's start to think about and plan for the 2018 season. Whistlers played this season's semi-final against Mooloolaba Legends at Maroochydore, it was so windy and we all struggled, but it was a good match. Lots of long rallies, lots of deuces and some games looked like it would go on forever. Score was 33-39 games, 2-6 sets. Team was Donna Kuskopf, Maree Hooley, Brenda Warner and Aki Lepper. We lost but it very close and we were all happy that we played such great tennis. However, committee let us know later in the day that Mooloolaba team had one player who wasn't qualified to play in the semi, so that let us through to the grand final on Friday at Maroochydore.

The BRD included Bill Reynolds, Dennis Brown, Paul Viertel and Rod Waldron. NTPs: 3 - Graham Thompson and Toni Bishop and 5 - Robin Hay and Rod Waldron. Friday November 10: The Chook Run was won by Mark Green in first place, Graham Thompson runner-up and Richard Owen was third. Saturday November 11: There was an 18 hole mixed 4BBB Stableford Event. First place went to Mark Green and Jon Fairman with 50 points, runners-up went to Robin Hay and Jimmy Byun with 49 points and third place went to Bill Reynolds and Geoff Smith with 47 points. Contributed by Ken Barker Our yearly November tournament began on Thursday in beautiful conditions and ran over four days finishing on Sunday. A most enjoyable time was had by all and a big thank you to all who assisted, especially to Val Carbery, who managed the event. Thanks also to the tournament sponsors Maleny Motor Trimmers and Maleny Physiotherapy’s Tim and Mary Bagshaw. In the First Division, played on Thursday, four players competed: Ted Singleton (Caloundra), Leigh Harvey (Headland Buderim), Vince Carbery and Nick Cram (Maleny). In round 1 Ted beat Vince 18-6 while Leigh beat Nick 19-8. Round 2 saw Nick go down to Ted 14-9 while Vince defeated Leigh 20-11. A tight final round eventuated with Ted narrowly beating Leigh 15-14 and Vince just getting up against Nick 12-11. Ted was the winner with three out of three. Vince placed second with two. Second Division, played on Friday, had five players: Donna Manning, Peter Stevenson (Windsor), Theo Kleiberg (Nambour), Vince Carbery and Nick Cram. The scores were as follows. Round 1: Donna 12 v Peter 4; Theo 11 v Vince 5. Round 2: Theo 10 v Donna 5; Nick 13 v Peter 6. Round 3: Nick 13 v Vince 12, Theo 15 v Peter 3. Round 4: Peter 13 v Vince 6, Nick 18 v Donna 5. The final, to determine the winner and runner up, saw Theo defeat Nick 14-3. Third Division, played on Saturday fielded six players: Sarah Widin, Kath Smith, Eileen Kleiberg and Bill Habner (Nambour), and Miggy and Peter Mackey (Graceville). Results were, round 1: Kath 8 v Eileen 6 and Miggy 10 v Sarah 7. Round 2: Bill 9 v Sarah 5, Peter 14 v Eileen 7. Round 3: Bill 14 v Miggy 9, Peter 26 v Kath 3. Peter beat Bill 11-10 in the final. Peter was the only one to peg out in the entire four days of the tournament. Achieving this in a 90 minute game is outstanding. Fourth Division, played on Sunday, had five competing, Judy Starr and Robyn Pettman (Nambour), Priscilla Vickers, Ted Gardner, and Garth Cottrell. Games results were good. All players had some play. Round 1: Ted 6 v Judy 5; Robyn 10 v Priscilla 4. Round 2: Priscilla 5 v Garth 3; Robyn 13 V Ted 3. Round 3: Judy 5 v Robyn 4; Ted 9 v Garth 4. Round 4: Ted 10 v Priscilla 8; Judy 6 v Garth 2. Round 5: Robyn 18 v Garth 8; Judy 6 v Priscilla 5. Some of the games were very close and could easily have gone either way. Three players, Robyn, Judy and Ted all recorded three wins, so it came down to net points, with Robyn the winner from Judy. Of the eight prizes given out during the tournament, Nambour collected four, two firsts and two seconds, Caloundra and Graceville each took home a first prize, while our club had two seconds. The lawns are being renovated on November 20 and will be unavailable for a couple of weeks after that. Club play days are Thursday and Sunday at 2 for 2.30pm.
