Last Saturday proved a rather early start with Brownie and I heading along to Mary Cairncross to be part of the crowd for the filming of live weather crosses on the Today Show which started at 6am. Having arrived early while Stevie Jacobs and the production crew were setting up, we couldn’t miss out on the opportunity to introduce this high profile visitor to the local area with a copy of our
newspaper. So I kind of figured that while many in Australia might ‘wake up with Today’ last Saturday morning the Today Show’s Steve Jacobs woke up with Glasshouse Country and Maleny News. And with all the best laid plans of getting the perfect cover shot ... Saturday morning wasn’t exactly one of the those beautiful clear days, with plenty of blue skies. So sadly while we know that the cover photo was taken with the spectacular view of the Glass House Mountains, I guess you will just have to take our word for it, as short of having x-ray vision the image could be taken anywhere. However it was great to see the enthusiasm and conviction that Steve Jacobs spoke about the natural beauty of the local area, even if the photographic evidence did little to support his claims. Let’s hope that plenty of intrastate and interstate visitors Regards, are still inspired to come and spend some of their hard earned tourism dollars in the local area.

Cover Story Natural beauty and local produce on show By Lea Parkes Last Saturday the award winning 55 acre Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve was showcased to the rest of the country in a number of live television crosses on Channel Nine’s Today Show. The Today Show's weekend weatherman Steve Jacobs was able to share what a great location Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve is for visitors of all ages, showing of the Rainforest Education Centre, which features interactive displays, multisensory experiences and exhibits as well as the great food production, cooking school and dining opportunities available at Maleny. Milly, one of Maleny Diaries lovely cows, made a rather interesting guest appearance wearing her ‘cow cam’ which you can seem live streamed from the Maleny Diaries website. Along with the great products from Maleny Dairies, there were plenty of taste testing of
Maleny Chamber of Commerce Committee and other locals showing their support for Maleny

Last Sunday, Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk ended the speculation and called on the Queensland Governor to dissolve the Parliament and thus setting in train the process for the State election to be held on Saturday, November 25. After this election, Parliaments will run for fixed four years terms, ending the ‘will they … won’t they’ games. The last State election was in January 2015, which saw both sitting local members, Andrew Powell and Mark McArdle, returned, although with significant swings against them. The Liberal National Party government of Campbell Newman lost the election in favour of the Australian Labor Party and Annastacia Palaszczuk.
Voters now have until the end of this week, Friday, November 3 to enrol to vote or change their electoral details. See www.aec.gov.au for details on how to do this. Candidates have until midday of next Tuesday, November 7 to formally nominate through the Electoral Commission Queensland (ECQ). To speak with an ECQ Returning Officer, call into their office at the old Church on the Rise building on Peachester Road in Beerwah (for Glass House) or 37 Bowman Road, Caloundra for Caloundra. You can contact either office by calling 1300 881 665. The voting process for this State election will be different to the previous, as now you will have to number all candidates in order of your preference (called full preferential voting) in order for your vote to count.

As per normal, you will be able to vote early via a postal vote form or at an early polling station if you are unable to attend a polling booth on November 25. Already, a number of candidates have been preselected by the major parties and have come forward in the electorates of Glass House and Caloundra. In Caloundra, declared candidates known at the time of going to print are Mark McArdle (LNP and sitting Member), Jason Hunt (ALP), Rod Jones (Pauline Hanson's One Nation) and Marcus Finch (The Greens). In 2015, five candidates vied for the seat including LNP, ALP, Greens, Palmer United and an independent. In Glass House, the known candidates are Andrew Powell (LNP and sitting Member), Brent Hampstead (ALP), Tracey Bell-Henselin (Pauline Hanson's One Nation), Sue Webber (The Greens) and Sue Mureau (Australian Workers Party). In 2015, a total of four candidates ran in Glass House being from LNP, ALP, Greens and Palmer United. Some boundary changes have occurred in both the Caloundra and Glass House electorates. Why aren’t all parks the same?
In the context of the recent Cooke Park, Maleny playground community dissention, you might like to ask “...how does the Sunshine Coast Council decide what we see and find in your local park or playground?” To understand this, you have to understand some of the behind-the-scenes frameworks which the council have established to plan and manage these community assets. In the Sunshine Coast Council area, there are more than 1,000 recreation parks covering an area of approximately 1,000 hectares with an infrastructure assets replacement value of over $120 million. Within this, the council looks after 334 playgrounds. Under the recently adopted Environment and Liveability Strategy, the council’s stated objective for these parks is to create vibrant public spaces and places to host a wide variety and diverse range of activities for keeping healthy and creative communities alive. The Open Space network consists of a number of categories, with the recreation category being sub-categorised into recreation parks, amenity reserves and linear parks. Most urban parks we visit – and including Cooke Park – are recreation parks, which are further categorised as council-wide, district, local and civic. Each of these (council-wide, district, local and civic) have a specific purpose and intent, and their number and location are governed by a set of hierarchical standards.

For example, council-wide parks are the large parks that attract residents and visitors, providing spaces, settings and facilities to cater for large numbers of people. They may host major events and celebrations. They are generally 10 to 20 hectares in size, with a total of 0.7ha provided per 1000 people across the whole region. They are located within 20km and 30 minutes travel time of most residences, are close to an arterial road or public transport, have significant onsite parking and provide for a broad range of recreational activities within the one location – including commercial activities. There are only a handful of these across the Sunshine Coast. Examples are Kings Beach Park and Mary Cairncross Park (the open space area). District parks are between three and five hectares in size. They attract residents and visitors from the local community and surrounding suburbs and provide a variety of spaces, settings and facilities. They may host community events and celebrations. They are positioned within three kilometres from most residences in urban areas (generally a 30-minute walk, 20-minute cycle or 10-minute drive); on or close to a distributor or arterial road and within walking distance of regular public transport; and are linked to the recreation trails or pedestrian / bicycle network. They can be often located in areas of special interest and may adjoin other community facilities, such as a library, and on-site car parking is generally provided.
A range of activities may be catered for such as recreation and community gathering, play spaces, community events, community gardens, dog off leash and skate parks, and commercial activities may be permitted. Interpretive elements are encouraged for cultural and environmental features. Examples are Skippy Park at Landsborough and the Maleny Community Precinct. Whereas local parks are smaller and more plentiful and are provided at a rate of one hectare per 1000 people in urban areas, or one park per rural township or one per estate. They are a minimum of 5,000sqm in size, are five to 10-minute walks from residences, linked to pedestrian trails or bike network, strengthen the local landscape qualities, and cater for recreation, social gathering and play spaces. These parks cater for frequent visits and are located a short walk from home for people in the surrounding local community. They connect people to the outdoors and may provide other complementary values such as landscape enrichment, biodiversity or cultural conservation. Local parks include Tesch Park and Cooke Park at Maleny, and many others scattered about our towns and housing estates. Allied with this categorisation is a hierarchy of what are called ‘embellishments’. It would be unreasonable to expect that every park should contain every desired facility. Not all parks need toilets, barbeques and bike tracks.

Cooke Park playground update It makes better sense (and economics) to have a core provision of basic facilities at all parks, and then a network of different facilities through the landscape, providing for a more diverse recreational opportunity. Council planners follow desired standard documents, which outline what level of park should receive what type of facilities, as well as the level of service and maintenance they receive from council staff. Concurrently, they operate in accordance with a plethora of national Standards and Specifications, including AS/NZS 4685:2014 Playground Equipment and Surfacing Set; AS/ NZS 4486:1997 Playground and Playground Equipment; AS 4422:2016 Playground Surfacing – Specifications, requirements and test method; and the Sunshine Coast Council Open Space Landscape Infrastructure Manual. Taking a look at the planning matrix, you can see that both local and district parks can contain dog on leash areas, bike racks, bins, picnic tables, seats, water taps, landscaping, shade trees and structures, exercise equipment, a multi-use space, play equipment, shelters, and signage. However, there are some facilities that district parks are allocated which local parks are not, including a dog off leash area, drinking fountains, barbeques, boardwalks and viewing platforms, bridges, community garden, an event space, skate park, artwork, memorials and plaques, garden irrigation, security lighting, bus set-down, on-site parking and toilets.
Community consultation for the upgrade of the playground equipment in Maple Street’s Cooke Park in Maleny continues. The Sunshine Coast Council have given locals until 5pm this Friday to have their say on what they would like to have to replace the original beloved timber playground, which has been removed for safety reasons. The move by the council, which has been described on social media as “the false dichotomy being presented in the so-called survey”, has been criticised by those looking for more than just the two versions suggested by the council through the survey. The call has gone out for an ‘option three,’ which seems to be along the lines of, “...please listen to what the community actually wants in a local playground.” This is backed up by a petition attracting over over 220 signatures calling on the council to “...to work with the Maleny Community in order to find a design and plan of action that serves both the community’s and council’s needs.” If you’d like to complete the council’s survey, go to https://haveyoursay.sunshinecoast.qld. gov.au/cooke-park-playground If you’d like to sign the community petition, go to www.change.org and search for ‘Cooke Park’. Recently Beerwah Library paid a favour forward with the donation of two toy cupboards to Bella Grace Early Learning Centre. The cupboards were made by the Glasshouse Country Men’s Shed and donated to Beerwah Library back in 2011. With Beerwah Library undergoing an internal refurbishment in 2018 to meet the changing needs of this vibrant community, they are no longer able to use the cupboards. Sunshine Coast Crime Prevention Unit, Beerwah Neighbourhood Watch and Beerwah Police are excited to launch Dogs on Patrol at Skippy Park, Old Landsborough Road, on Saturday, November 4, from 9am to midday. ‘Dogs on Patrol’ encourages dog owners to stay safe while walking their beloved pets and also to report any suspicious or criminal activity. Community safety and crime prevention is everyone’s responsibility and you can help by being our extra eyes and ears on the streets of your town. Dog owners are encouraged to bring their dogs to the launch and receive a free ‘Dogs on Patrol’ dog leash (as modelled by the dashing doggy duo in the photograph). There will be prizes to be won in a number of categories including ‘Best Dressed Dog’.

Glenview Mooloolah Tennis Club Contributed by Jenny Morris The club has had a busy year working through the complex process required to put together a number of funding applications to allow us to upgrade courts two and three and the proposed construction of a fourth court. We are pleased to advise that we were able to secure a grant from the Sunshine Coast Council for $18,750 and thanks to Councillor Rick Baberowski and Jenny McKay, were given an additional (combined contribution) of $8,000 to the upgrades. We were also successful in receiving a grant of $35,000 from State Government through the Gambling Community Benefit Funds, unfortunately we missed out on receiving the Get Playing and Spaces Grant. When Rhonda and I were putting together the funding applications we really appreciated the assistance of Tennis Queensland, who was able to provide advice and quotes, and the support and guidance provided by the council in compiling the paperwork required for the applications to State Government. If other clubs are looking for help with writing grants we would recommend Gina from Grants4U, she was a wealth of knowledge and very helpful. We now are looking forward to work commencing around the end of November

Remembrance Day
A service will be held on Remembrance Day, Saturday, November 11 commemorating the 99th Anniversary of the Armistice which ended the First World War (1914-1918). The service will be held at the Cenotaph, outside the Glass House Mountains Visitor and Interpretive Centre commencing at 10.30am. Everyone is warmly invited to attend. A light luncheon will be made available at the Glasshouse Country RSL Sub Branch immediately following the Service. Poppies will be available for sale during the week prior to the ceremony on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday outside Glasshouse IGA and Wednesday and Friday outside Buck's Bakery in Landsborough.
Safety improvements for KilcoyBeerwah Road
Drivers can expect a safer drive on Kilcoy Beerwah Road at Cedarton, with safety upgrade works set to commence in early November. Fencing and drainage works will take place one kilometre south of the intersection with Maleny Stanley River Road. The project will involve installing a wire mesh rock fall protection fence along with a concrete-lined drain to prevent rocks from falling onto the road. Construction will generally take place from 7am to 5pm, Monday to Friday and will take about two weeks to complete (weather permitting). For the safety of road workers and motorists, changed traffic conditions including lane closures and speed reductions will apply during the works. Variable Messaging Signage (VMS) boards will be in place at the approaches to the work site.

Beerwah RSL fighting back
Though the Beerwah and District RSL Sub Branch no longer own the building they originally operated from, the members have not lost their spirit or enthusiasm for the important work of supporting veterans and their families. State Member for Caloundra Mark McArdle recently met with the men and women of Beerwah and District RSL during their regular monthly meeting and said that it was heartening to see members undeterred by past events. “Yes, they accept they don’t have the building, yet their focus is the future and I heard in their voices a determination to get back on top,” Mr McArdle said. During the meeting, RSL President John Nisbett told Mr McArdle, “Our role is to look to the future and work in our community. We have people that need help, and that is why we are here. “We will be here for the long haul and I feel very proud of both the RSL and the members of this sub branch.” “My father was a returned serviceman who had seen active service in Papua New Guinea during WWII and his spirit is what lives on both in myself and in the Beerwah and District Sub Branch,” Mr Nisbett said. Mr McArdle said while he had never served in the military, he was well aware of the debt all Australians own to those who have. “Without them, it would not be the Australia we have today,” Mr McArdle said. “I, for one, want the sub branch to succeed. I want them, as do they, to provide a link between veterans and the support they and their families need. “Sadly, many veterans don’t know of the assistance available to them and that is the greatest tragedy of all. “To John Nesbitt and all members, well done,” Mr McArdle concluded.

We have some great door prizes from our local attractions and this event is the first time we will be using the new Crowd DJ app so the kids can request their favourite songs. Musings: Rural Idyll to Coastal Verge Merry Christmas
Wayne Smith's Musings: Rural Idyll to Coastal Verge exhibiiton will be on display at Vianta Arts 70 Simpson Street Beerwah October 29 – November 26, and will open at 6.30pm on Friday, November 3. Wayne has not pursued the conventional path of an artist but rather has reverted back to the tradition of the journeyman artist whose sole intent is to satisfy the clients’ request and expectations. This has led to a diversity of ideas and expressions in his work which are hard to categorise. This body of work is a study of the zone from the hinterland to the coastal edge. The pockets of the previous rural environment are making way for an expanding need for land and contemporary lifestyle choices. The concept of the rural Idyll is challenged by these ironic depictions of country scenes where layers of meaning become fragmented and unclear. These assemblages combine a number of influences and explore novel forms of representation and expression. The material nature of an object or surface combined with image or pattern generates a narrative about time and place with which each individual may engage their imagination to create their own story. This series of works is part of an ongoing body of work started 10 years ago as a means of providing artworks that have a strong conceptual underpinning as well as being decorative and ambient. Depending on the work, Wayne's approach is either figurative or semi-abstract and ambiguous, drawing inspiration mostly from natural forms and textures. Smith studied Fine Art at Queensland College of Art. z Graduating in the mid-eighties, he pursued studio practice having five solo exhibitions and involvement in a number of group shows. Peachester Public Dip
Contributed by Helen Page Travellers on the main road west of Peachester occasionally stop to view a rather unusual structure among the trees next to the old tennis courts. You can almost hear them asking “What is this?” This unfamiliar building is a former public cattle dip. It dates from 1915, replacing an earlier timber dip built by Landsborough Shire Council, and registered as a Stock Dip Reserve in 1910. Public dips were important facilities in many country districts during the first half of the 20th century. They were erected in response to the spread of the cattle tick, which threatened the cattle industry throughout the state and dairying in South-East Queensland. “...A caretaker was appointed to oversee the dip. He was responsible for ‘charging’ the dip with the mixture of arsenic and soda that was used. Water was carted from the nearby Stanley River to keep it filled. One day per week, usually Saturday, was set aside for dipping and a fee of two pence per head was charged. As more farmers built their own dips, the Peachester Public Dip fell into disuse.” The century old dip represents a remarkable slice of farming history. Imagine those Saturday dipping sessions, with five or six farmers bringing their herds along the main road, cattle out of routine and complaining noisily, a few feisty bulls looking for a fight, dogs barking and trying to help, farmers frustrated by the logistics of the exercise. They had to keep their cattle separate from other herds, and each farmer had the added challenge of separating his milkers from the dry cows ... would it be better to bring them on different days? Would it be easier to build your own dip? The Peachester dip was last used in the 1960s. The site was neglected, became overgrown, and the dip disappeared from view. In 2007, during an audit of heritage places in SE Queensland, the old dip attracted renewed interest. Peachester Public Dip was listed on the Queensland Heritage Register in 2009, and funds were allocated to restore the structure and make the site more accessible. Andrew Powell MP asked Peachester History Committee to take on the role of Trustee, so there would be a local group to help look after the site, and PHC Inc was appointed as Trustee of the Reserve in 2014. Soon after that Linda and Graham Huddy took up residence next door, and members are very grateful to Graham who volunteered to keep the area around the dip neat and tidy.
Launch of interpretive sign PHC also undertook to organise signage explaining the dip’s history and significance. A donation from the Rotary Club of the Glasshouse Mountains was earmarked for this purpose, and the sign has been produced by ATL Graphix at Beerwah. This Sunday, November 5, before the PHC monthly meeting, members and visitors will gather at the Dip Reserve to launch the new signage and remind everyone about the role this dip played in Peachester’s past. Anyone who would like to attend, please be at the Peachester Hall by 10.00 am, and car pooling will be arranged. PHC members would be delighted to hear from anyone who remembers dipping their cattle at this public dip – come along and share your stories. Heritage Register website: www.qld.gov.au/environment/land/heritage/register Light Horse history After the launch, members and visitors will return to the hall for the November meeting, starting at 11.00am. The theme for the day is the history of the Australian Light Horse, and Lee Dominick from the 5th Light Horse Regiment, Maleny Troop, will be guest speaker. Lee will have uniforms and equipment on display, and will tell the story of the legendary Light Horse, with a special focus on the history of the Maleny Troop. Visitors are welcome – and please bring a contribution for the shared lunch.

During the month of November the Glasshouse Community Church is celebrating being a part of the Glasshouse Community for 25 years. As part of the celebration, each Sunday during the month we will be welcoming a previous pastor back to take a service. On the 5th it will be Rev Brendan Edwards, on the 12th it will be Rev Rex Rigby (National Superintendent of the Wesleyan Methodist Church), the 19th will see Rev Lionel Collins take the service and then on 26th, Rev David Collins. Glasshouse Community Church meets at the Glasshouse State School hall at 4.30pm each Sunday afternoon. You are welcome to come along for the service and then stay and enjoy dinner with us afterwards. The Glasshouse Mountains Girl Guides have undergone a number of changes this year, including changing the location where they meet each week to now be at ‘Boomajarril’ on the corner of Coonowrin Street and Old Gympie Road, Landsborough. At this stage the unit is made up of a small group of enthusiastic guides who are keen to grow their numbers into the future. They would like girls aged between 5 and 15 years, who are interested in participating in group activities with other girls their own age that will assist them in developing new skills and gaining confidence while having fun to come along and join them. The group meet every Monday afternoon during the school term from 4pm to 6pm. Each week they undertake a different activity, and to coincide with Halloween this week they held a spooky Halloween Disco, where the girls shared in the fun with their friends who were special guests. Contributed by Alison Edwards Following on from the discovery of fire ants recently in Beerwah, students from Glass House Mountains State School participated in an educational program about fire ants as part of the school’s environmental program and science curriculum. The presentation featured retired odour detection dog Flip, who demonstrated how sniffer dogs are used to find pest species, such as fire ants. The program, entitled ‘Aka the Fire Ant Tracker,’ aims to educate children about what fire ants look like and how to identify them, as well as the impacts they have on our environment, lifestyle and health. The kids were asked to go home and talk to their parents about what they’ve learned and to ask parents and the community to look in their backyard to see if they have any fire ants in their garden. Contributed by Angela Reedman-Polinski Maleny C&K Community Kindergarten hosted a Grandparents Day High Tea recently, welcoming family and friends of the children who attend the centre. The high tea was an opportunity for families to meet and share food and stories together, with over 60 people attending and enjoying the atmosphere. Cake stands filled with sweet and savoury goodies were shared and children took the opportunity to share their paintings, creations and read books with their loved ones. The centre teachers commented, “we love to observe the wonderful memories being created and being shared through the family generations”. The natural outdoor environment of the kindergarten was enjoyed by grandparents, strolling the grounds and hearing the children talk about the vegetable gardens, the chickens, the little creek and the bee hive. The centre hosts the event every year and is looking forward to creating another memorable Grandparents High Tea in 2018.

Living - Music Opera Queensland sings for Maleny
The touring group of Opera Queensland has devised a special program for Maleny Arts Council’s next concert at 2pm on Sunday, November 12 at the Maleny Community Centre. Baritone Jason Barry-Smith is one of the Maleny concert goers’ favourites and he will be the MC as well as part of the trio of singers who will delight the audience with the special series of songs for Maleny. Jason said they loved coming to Maleny. “The audiences are wonderful to sing for, and the Arts Council works hard to make our visit special,” he said. “We are also looking forward to having the well-loved Maleny Singers join us for part of the program. Director Margaret Taylor is a professional and her work with the group is always reliable.” Opera Queensland’s Maleny repertoire will include some of opera’s ‘swoon’ melodies, like the trio from ‘Cosi fan Tutte’, the ‘Flower Duet’ from Delibes’ ‘Lakme’, as well as the ‘Diamond Aria’, ‘Doll Song’ and ‘Barcarolle’ from Offenbach’s ‘Tales of Hoffman’. Program Director for the Maleny Arts Council, Professor Peter Lavery, said the Arts Council was pleased to bring good music and drama to the country, so people don’t have to travel to the city, where the tickets cost more and it is difficult and expensive to park. “You also don’t get to meet the artists at city theatres and after every performance our audience can come up to the deck (there is a lift) share our nibbles, buy a drink from the MCC bar and talk to the performers,” he said. What denotes a popular musical icon? Is it the gyrating twist of Elvis Presley’s pelvic moves? That gravelly voice of Joe Cocker? Or the nasal poetic drawl of Bob Dylan’s ballads? Canadian singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell, (born November 7, 1943) was one of the defining singer/songwriters of the late 1960s and ‘70s and somewhat of an unthwarted act to ape. Behind her effortlessly haunting voice was the soul of a musical junkie, who in her youth had adored Ray Charles, Chuck Berry and The Everly Brothers. Behind her lyrics lay a true poet’s sensibility and the thing that bound everything together was her inextinguishable creativity. Similarly, her guitar playing was never like anybody else’s. While some of Joni's most popular songs were written on piano, almost every song she composed on the guitar uses an open, or non-standard, tuning; she has written songs in some 50 tunings, playing what she has called “Joni's weird chords". That unfamiliar tuning and the chord combinations is part of her magic. She began singing in small nightclubs in her hometown of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan before moving to the United States in 1965. Some of her original songs, ‘Urge for Going’, ‘Chelsea Morning’, ‘Both Sides, Now’, ‘The Circle Game’, were recorded on her debut album in 1968. Settling in Southern California, Joni, with popular songs like ‘Big Yellow Taxi’ and ‘Woodstock’, helped define an era and a generation. She asserted her desire for artistic control throughout her career, and still holds the publishing rights for her music. Joni rose to popularity at a time when women were still primarily singers of other people's songs and who were marketed almost exclusively on their sex appeal. A blunt critic of the music industry, she quit touring and released her nineteenth and final studio album of original songs in 2007 ‘Shine’, experimenting with a more jazz /pop fusion alternative. On May 29, 2015, it was confirmed that Joni had suffered a brain aneurysm and was taking part in rehabilitation and physical therapy. She made her first public appearance following the aneurysm when she was escorted to a concert in Los Angeles in August 2016. Love and freedom are two predominant themes that have recurred in Joni’s songs and she admits openly that freedom to her is the luxury of being able to follow the path of your heart, to keep the magic in your life. Politicians are people too
I have found people are often quick to criticise our politicians, but slow to acknowledge when there are genuine ones out there. Our youngest son is schooled through Distance Education and one of this term's subjects is 'Civics', looking at levels of government. So, I looked on the internet to see what the three representatives for our area were up to. I found out that Federal MP Andrew Wallace was holding a 'Polished Man' morning tea event at Kawana. So we went along. I thought it would be good for our son to see what our local members do. After the morning tea and the TV cameras for the event had gone, and even before they came, Andrew and his staff took the time to talk to my son and I. They were polite, friendly, and happy to answer any of the questions he had about learning about what politicians did. And also, they were just talking to him as a human being, not just politicians pushing for more votes. We also popped up to MP Andrew Powell office, where his friendly staff assisted us with some links to information on government. Then, the other night at the Beerwah Street party, my son noticed Andrew Wallace and his staff were there and he went to talk to them. They again treated him with respect, in talking with him and giving him time (even though they were
Samantha Dodds’ letter in GC&M News edition October 18 refers to secrecy and the Sunshine Coast Council’s pro-development bias, at the expense of the resident, which I believe is a recurring issue. Research indicates that from April 2016 to September 2017, the council held over 102 closed sessions (from which the resident/ratepayer was excluded). During the same period, the Noosa Council held only 10 closed sessions. Why the high level of secrecy? For further evidence that the existing resident is totally excluded and disadvantaged by the process, go to the council website and access the ‘Dwelling House Code’ Section 9.3.6. Then read Section 9.3.6.2, the ‘Stated Objectives’, for which they describe as a “high level of amenity” to the resident. Now move on to Section 9.3.6.3 ‘Assessment Criteria’ – this is where the deception and fiction really begin. The stated ‘Performance Outcomes’ of not adversely impacting the amenity of the neighbouring premises are totally contradicted by ‘Acceptable Outcomes’, eg allowing a neighbour to build virtually on the boundary “two storeys high”. Despite an internal review (and claiming to have building to boundary setbacks equal to or better than other councils, research indicates this claim is totally false), the Council has maintained the smallest building to boundary setbacks of all the surrounding councils. Under ‘Self-Assessment’, your neighbour determines the level of loss of your amenity as council is, by design, totally unaware and uninterested in site decisions that impact the resident as they have not allocated, nor accepted responsibility, nor taken any initiatives to minimise that loss. What is happening on the Sunshine Coast does not happen in other council areas (and

other Australian states), where regulation and/ or administration ensure fairer outcomes for residents. Given the growing resident dissatisfaction with being completely isolated from the process, it is time for an independent inquiry into the high level of council secrecy, the Dwelling House Code and its administration. Matter of time
It is only a matter of time before someone coming out of Woolworths or one of the other retail shops at Beerwah Marketplace gets hit by a car. People simply just walk out in front of traffic and expect them to stop. While there is a pedestrian crossing, not many people use it. Poor mobile communications
Recently I was in touch with a NBN staffer and he confirmed that the new Mt Beerwah tower would not improve our poor mobile reception. He replied that it had nothing to do with mobiles and when I asked what can we do about no reception with our mobiles, he replied to contact your service providers i.e. Telstra, Optus, Vodafone, etc. So, if your mobile does not receive voice, give your provider a stir. Mobile phone and internet services were available continuously in all sparsely populated areas - some of very rugged terrain. Yet, here, in Landsborough, an hour from Brisbane Airport and one kilometre west of the railway line, these services are only available intermittently to Sunshine Coast Council ratepayers; mainly due it seems, to the ignorance/ arrogance/personal agendas of eight of the 10 Councillors of Sunshine Coast Council. In the letter, GCM&News, October 18 edition, Greg Newton was up to his usual tricks of distorting the facts. The quoted figure of 10,000 productive jobs he uses has been shot down a dozen times by reports. The myth: Adani has claimed in its advertising that the mine will bring 10,000 jobs, something every politician uses who has an interest in having to dig up more coal. The facts: in his January 2015 Report to the Court of Queensland, Adani's own expert, Jerome Fahrer, stated that the claims for 10,000 jobs were “deficient”. He then went on to say: "Over the life of the project it is projected that on average around 1,464 employee years of full time equivalent direct and indirect jobs will be created". In an article for the Australian Independent Media Network in May 2017, Michael Griffin attempted to make sense of this sticky mess of job "facts" and said that to understand the real economic benefits the mine will bring, if any, you have to view it in the context of various subsidies, royalty exemptions, waivers of clean-up costs, free water entitlements and low interest loans Adani will receive - which amount to $1.32 billion. Fahrer's statement then indicates that the 1,464 direct and indirect employee years of full time equivalent work the mine will generate will be created over the course of the whole life span of the mine (projected to be between 25 - 60 years). Not all at once. How does this large mine operate with so few staff? The answer comes from Jeyakmur Janakaraj, CEO of the Adani Groups Australian operations in the Mining Global online newsletter. He states: "We will be utilising at least 45 four hundred tonne driverless trucks. All vehicles will be capable of automation. We will ramp up the mine, everything will be automated from mine to pit." So sorry Greg, unless you retrain in servicing driverless trucks, there's no job for you. Richard Giles Conondale

It was unbelievable that Mother Nature changed her mind as the previous days were not looking good at all. Come Saturday morning you would not have known when you drove through Simpson Street that there had probably been somewhere around 5,000 people there the previous night. My wife and I were having some dinner after our walk around the fair and we were joined by our local Councillor Rick who we met for the first time, he has done an amazing job with the projects in our area and all his efforts should be appreciated. The Hankinson’s Letter (GC&M News October 24) refers to a recent article by Ag Force President Craig Maudsley who defends farmers’ land care, and expresses his frustration at the blame levelled at them. He calls for an end to political point scoring. In contrast, people like the Hankinson’s are intent on politicising this issue. There are claims in the letter which are blatantly inaccurate. With only 270 votes separating Labor and the LNP here in Glass House, there is a genuine choice for voters at this state election. Glass House is regarded by many as safe LNP territory. Nothing could be further from the truth. Andrew Powell won Glass House in 2015 by the skin of his teeth and has delivered nothing but lip service and excuses since. Annastacia Palaszczuk has admirably led Queensland over the past 2½ years, creating jobs, lowering unemployment, restoring the frontline health and education services cut by Tim Nicholls and Andrew Powell, and taking real action to stem rising power prices. All this without selling our state’s assets. Premier Palaszczuk has also kept her promises to Queenslanders. In fact, she has been successful in meeting 91.3% of her 553 election commitments, made prior to the 2015 election. Jobs, health and education are Labor’s priorities for the next three years. My team and I have knocked on more than 2,000 doors over the past few months and day in, day out local residents tell me that an efficient, well-staffed and caring public health system is vitally important to them. Tim Nicholls’ agenda as Campbell Newman’s Treasurer was ‘cut, sack and sell’, and that’s exactly what he has in store for us if he becomes Premier. He and his LNP colleagues sacked 112 nurses and midwives from the Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health System when in government. That is no way to treat frontline health workers and no way to treat the welfare of our residents. Annastacia Palaszczuk, by comparison, has employed an extra 600 nurses and midwives in our region. Oh what a night
I am full of joy at the great response we have had for our Beerwah Street Party. We have been told the crowd numbers were 9 – 10,000 over the 5 hours of the party which is absolutely amazing! I would like to thank you all for coming and showing your support for our event, and for your positive feedback. The satisfaction of seeing our community coming together to have fun and enjoy themselves is a wonderful reward for the work involved in creating the event. While there are so many individuals I would like to acknowledge that contributed both on the night and in the lead up to the event, there are a few individuals that I really would like to single out for the immense efforts that they contributed. In particular are committee members Maree Anderson and Roger Reilly who worked alongside me right throughout the year long planning, with many months of focused work bringing the event together. Along with Jenny Broderick, who works all year bringing local singers and musicians together for a range of community events, the quality of music and sound Jenny arranged was exceptional. As well as Mike Briggs who does a fantastic job in bringing the schools ‘out to play’, showcasing our talented local youth. Thanks also to our wonderful volunteers, over 50 of you on the day! SCC deputation to State Ministers During the State Cabinet's recent visit to the Sunshine Coast, the Sunshine Coast Council requested an opportunity to meet with the Premier and her Ministers to advocate for our major projects. We were granted a meeting with Minister for Local Government Mark Furner and Minister for Science and Innovation Leeanne Enoch, where we provided an overview of the International Broadband Submarine Cable Project and a Maroochydore City Centre update. My role in advocating for our region's need for light rail and the North Coast Rail Line Duplication was backed up by presenting Minister Turner with a copy of council's Transport Priorities map. Well received in my view, and a great opportunity to continue to advocate for our region.
Road safety for students It was encouraging to attend another RYDA Road Safety Education Program, where the year 11 students of Beerwah State High School and Glasshouse Christian College learnt ways of keeping themselves and their friends safe on the roads. The program has expanded over the years and since 2009 has been delivered to approximately 8,000 students. Road education starts from a young age and stays with you for life, I’m hoping this helps our youth find their way safely. Further information can be found at www.rse.org.au/ryda
Dogs on Patrol at Skippy Park The Sunshine Coast Crime Prevention Unit and Beerwah Neighbourhood Watch are hosting a ‘Dogs on Patrol’ morning at Skippy Park on Saturday, November 4 from 9am to midday. Residents are encouraged to attend with their dog to learn how to help police keep our neighbourhoods safe, as well as support local groups such as Neighbourhood Watch.
Ewen Maddock Dam community tour I recently joined the Ewen Maddock Dam community tour led by Seqwater. This was an opportunity for local residents and community groups to learn more about how Seqwater operate the dam for drinking water supply and during flood events, and what the dam safety responsibilities are. There was a range of experts on hand to answer questions and provide an update about the future upgrade of the dam as part of Seqwater's Dam Improvement Program. We have had a total of 77 nominations submitted by members of the community to highlight the outstanding achievements of individuals, groups or businesses within the Caloundra Electorate, which is double the number received last year. It is heartening to see that there are so many people in our community who want to celebrate the work of others. The award categories include Sport Achiever, Environmental Contributor, Business Achiever, Community Volunteer, Group, and Event, as well as the top award of Caloundra Hall of Fame Identity. The winners for each of the nine award categories will be announced on Friday, November 3 at a ceremony held at the CCSA Hall in Caloundra. Thank you and congratulations to each of our nominees for their selflessness and high achievements, all for the betterment of our community.
In 2008 Queensland Governor Dame Quentin Bryce AC officially opened what is now the Mooloolah Valley Community Centre after hard work by dedicated volunteers to get it up and running. I have written and spoken about this ‘gem’ of a centre and the intrepid volunteers who man it, on a number of occasions. They continue to provide a range of services to people who need their help, be it due to cost of living pressures or family circumstances. If people need assistance with groceries, the centre can provide food vouchers. With the cost of getting to doctors’ appointments and the like, they can access petrol vouchers. For personal problems, there is counselling available. These are just a few of the services available. I suspect the unstated benefits include reducing isolation, proving people are there to offer help with a smile, all which can lift the spirit. But they are not ones to rest on their past glories. They have worked with the people of Mooloolah for years and they know there is more to do. They can see the need for a commercial-grade kitchen which could support a local ‘Meals on Wheels’ program, a Men’s Shed, and a conference room that they can hire out. These would all generate an income, directly or indirectly, to help in the Mooloolah community. These require a long-term lease so capital funding can be secured to start these projects. From the churches As this is my first occasion of writing for GC&M News, I thought I should tell you a bit about myself. I am Peter Woodward, brother of George Woodward, who was the minister for Glasshouse Country Uniting Church. I was born in Kilcoy and at age 10, moved to Palmwoods and attended Nambour High from 1961 to ‘64 and then went to the University of Queensland to study maths with the intention of becoming a high school teacher. Things changed when I sensed that God was calling me to church ministry and that began a journey that has been quite wonderful. Yes, there have been times of challenge, but I would not change my vocation. For much of my almost 45 years in ministry, I have been an Army Chaplain – 25 years full-time and 12 part-time. Peter Woodward Glasshouse Country Uniting Church my Army chaplaincy did not take me into any war zones. In 1971, I married Joan and we have three adult children and eight grandchildren who are a great delight to us. My time in ministry and Army chaplaincy has meant frequent moves and living between Far North Queensland and Southern Victoria and quite a few places in between. In retrospect, that was not always good for the family, but we have come through it stronger in spirit and with a great sense of our wonderful country. In 2012 I decided at age 65 to retire from fulltime ministry so that now I do have some time for family and travel, although I am still doing university chaplaincy, working on a doctorate, and doing occasional supply ministry like my current appointment at Glasshouse. I look forward to a happy association with the Glasshouse Country community.

Dining bliss in Beerwah Most people know how much I love Indian cuisine, so it’s always a pleasure to scan the menu at ‘the best Indian restaurant in town’ a.k.a. Bombay Bliss Beerwah. The store is about to mark its sixth anniversary and I can definitely see (and taste!) why the locals have embraced their local restaurant. With end-of-year celebrations fast approaching, it got me thinking that Indian catering could offer a hassle free and tasty alternative for office/work break up parties, or even as an exotic dine-in option for a Christmas party of up to 26 people. Bombay Bliss also offers a comprehensive catering menu for as few or as many people as you like. Speaking with the owner of the Beerwah store, he told me that just last week they catered for 1400 people. Some great ideas for groups include ‘Thali Mix Platters’ (finger food menu) from $105 that feeds around 10 to 12 people and include 10 lots each of vegetarian spring rolls, onion and spinach
bhaji, chicken tikka, lamb samosas, as well as two serves each of large raita (yogurt), tamarind chutney, mango chutney and tandoori chicken naan. ‘Victoria and Abdul’, a film about Queen Victoria’s friendship with Indian servant Abdul Karim, will be screened twice this weekend by the Maleny Film Society, on Saturday, November 4 at 7.15pm and on Sunday, November 5 at 4pm. It stars Judi Dench as a 67-year-old Victoria, engrossed in a sort of maternal friendship with a 24-year-old Hindustani secretary. The story begins in 1887 with the Queen’s Jubilee at the age of 67, after the loss of both her husband Prince Albert and her Scottish confidant John Brown. The young, tall and appealing Hindu servant Karim dares to smile at Her Majesty as he makes a presentation and then begins a remarkable friendship that is disapproved by the palace and later hidden by the family, only to be uncovered in 2003 with the discovery of a painting of Karim in Queen Victoria’s summer house on the Isle of Wight. Journalist Shrabani Basu delved deeper and wrote ‘The True Story of the Queen’s Closest Confidant’, which became the basis of the film by Stephen Frears, who also made ‘The Queen’ about Queen Elizabeth II starring Helen Mirren. Catering on Saturday night from 6pm is by Spaghetti Junction, with drinks bar and tea and coffee stand. Sunday afternoon’s matinee will also feature a drinks bar, with tea, coffee and home-made slices available. Members of the MFS may pre-book online or via the Maleny Information Centre. “What’s that?” ... I hear you say. Tatsoi isn’t something that you often see at the green grocers, in punnets at the nursery, or featured in TV gardening shows and in magazines, but it is a wonderfully versatile and tasty Asian green. I grow Tatsoi all year round as a leafy staple used in stir frys, salads, soups quiches, or anything else you want really. I describe it as a cross between baby spinach and bok choi... but I find it easier to grow and care for than either of those. You may be lucky to find seedlings in punnets, but they are very easy to strike from seed in your own punnets. If you can’t find it at your normal seed store, you can get it from that big hardware place. They sell it as a Mr Fothergill’s brand, they call it ‘Bok Choi’... but it’s not, it’s actually Tatsoi. I let one plant go to flower and then collect my own seed which I then use for the following 12 months. Prepare your beds as you would for any other leafy green – organic matter, compost, manures, a little dolomite and blood and bone. Once your seedlings have germinated and have a couple of leaves, plant them 25cm apart in rows. You must water them in straight away – don’t let them dry out as this will really set them back – use a weak worm juice mixture or similar. They are fast growers so as soon as you’ve planted the seedlings, sown some more seeds to get your next round started. Watch for caterpillars and grasshoppers as they grow – I use either a product called ‘Success’ or a pyrethrum spray, but you will need to do this on a weekly basis in Summer. Keep a close watch for bugs, as within a matter of days they can appear and infest the whole plant ... it’s happened to most of mine in the past week since the rains have come. In winter, you’ll have virtually no troubles with pests at all – the plant just grows a little slower. Fertilise every week with a liquid solution or every fortnight with a granular one, and make sure they don’t dry out as this will make their leaves taste bitter. The beauty of Tatsoi is that it grows as a rosette (which is a tight spiral of leaves) and so you can take leaves off the plant to use without taking the whole plant out. But they grow so fast and I tend to have lots in all the time that I just pull them up whenever I want to use them. Take care as the leaf stems are thin, soft and easily broken. And here’s another benefit of Tatsoi – you don’t have thick fleshy leaf stems to deal with like you do with other Asian greens. If they bolt to flower, you can pick the flower heads and use these like broccolini. Try some Tatsoi in your veggie garden – you won’t be disappointed.

With less than eight weeks ‘til Christmas, there’s still time to grow your own for the feasting table. It may be a bit late to plant seeds of most herbs and vegetables and have them ready for picking by December 25. You could probably get away with watercress and salad ‘microgreens’ such as the very young leaves of beetroot, lettuce, spinach and kale. And possibly radishes. But if you want to pick hearty bunches, then you’ll need to buy punnets and plant established seedlings. Do it this weekend and you’ll be able to get away with colourful leafy lettuces like red mignonette, butter beans, rainbow chard, Asian greens and kale. For longer growing vegetables – like golden button squash, cherry tomatoes and chillies – you’ll have to spend a bit more and buy more mature potted specimens to ensure that they are ready to pick in eight weeks. If you want herbs, that’s no problems. Any of the potted herbs will have grown a fair bit by Christmas. Rosemary, parsley, chives, basil, mint... they’ll all flourish with plenty of sunlight, water and nutrients. Another option is to scout around your friends and family and see what you can forage from their gardens. Either ask for their permission first or sneak in and ask for their forgiveness later.

Plunkett Mallee Eucalyptus curtisii Glass House Mountains is home to numerous eucalypts including the endangered Swamp stringy bark or E. conglomerata, E. kabiana, classified vulnerable, and the near threatened E. curtisii. However it is the Plunkett Mallee that is the most favoured as a street tree or for planting in urban parkland. With the typical “mallee” form of multi stems, E curtisii is also notable for the smooth, shiny grey bark, the dark green leaves which are lighter underneath, and the masses of cream flowers in spring. These trees often flower profusely even when quite small. Flowers are followed by equal numbers of heavy seed capsules or gum nuts which can cause arching of the branches. The Plunkett Mallee can be seen in some of the National Parks and in the surrounding Glass House area. Because of their small size, growing only to eight metres but often less, they are suitable for the home garden.

Sport Glenview Mooloolah Tennis Club Contributed by Jenny Morris With three matches to go, two of our Monday night teams, the Mungrals and Mystics, may just scrape in to contest the finals. We have five junior teams now playing in the Summer Season which has just started. Our Division 1 team, the Mooloolah Valley Magic, were runners up in the Winter Competition. Congratulations boys.
Beerwah Men’s Golf Club Contributed by Roger Bonhomme The rain has gone (for a while) and we played a medley stableford last Wednesday in warm, sunny conditions. Scores were generally very good with round of the day going to that diligent practicer Doug Young who won A grade with a fine 43 points. Five points behind were the trio of Tony Masters, former club champion Sean Daines and John Runge, Tony won the countback, but consider Sean's round – he's off plus 1! B grade was won by Gary Stockwell, recently returned from his umpteenth boat tour of Asia, on 39 points. Moss Thistlewaite starred again on 38, taking out second place on countback from Colin Bates. Murray Schipp had an excellent 42 points to run out easy winner of C grade from Bob Williams (39). NTP: 2 – Neil Bickley, 5 – Andrew Betts, 16 Dan Hall, 18 – Corey Wallyn. Saturday's stroke round produced some amazing results. Of the 165 finishers, 48 shot nett par or better. A brace of 67s led A grade with Marshall Caldwell edging out Luke Doyle on countback. Andrew Neville had a great day winning both B grade, with a wonderful 63, plus NTP on 5 and 16. Lindsay Bartel was left feeling a little sorry for himself, scoring 67! The round of the day went to C grade winner Mark Houston who scored 62 – a remarkable effort. Tom Dowling, back from a recent illness, shot 68 to finish a distant second. Other NTP: 2 – Wayne Maw, 18 – Mark Trims (Bribie Island).

Beerwah Ladies Golf Club Contributed by Brenda Briese We sure got the rain we desired (and a bit more!), but it was lovely. The course is wonderful now thanks to our Greens Staff, who do such a great job. Our competitions for the year are drawing to a close. We have our AGM in a fortnight’s time. Saturday, October 21: no results due to the rain. Thursday, October 26: was a Stroke round, we had a field of 57 ladies with Division 1 winner Karen Madsen (nice to see her back) with a net score of 69, and runner up Lesley Eggleston nett 72. Division 2 winner was Fay Raven 73 nett, and runner up was Felicity Smith 75 nett. NTP 2 - Jennifer Kelly, 5 - Andrea Campbell, 16 - Diane Flint, and 18 - Pauline Mason, BRD went to 75 nett.

The Range Croquet Club Contributed by Ken Barker Well done to Sarah Widin and Donna Manning who recently completed their Foundation Coaching qualifications at Headland Buderim. On Sunday, Sarah played Nick Cram in beautiful conditions, Nick, who is in fine form, won the game 26 to 13 with only some minor assistance/interference from Ken Barker. New member Garth Cotterell received some coaching from Donna about the construction of breaks in preparation for the upcoming 4th division event on Sunday, November 5. In line with our Summer start times, (see below), Kath Smith and Nick played, with Nick pegging out again to win 26 to 11. The lawns are being renovated on November 20 and will be unavailable for a couple of weeks after that. Club play days are Thursday and Sunday at 2pm for 2.30pm start. Wednesday, October 25: No golf played, due to work being carried out on the greens (sanding) the ladies just had a social morning at Robin’s home. Saturday, October 28: There was an 18 Hole Mixed Single Stableford Competition played with first place going to Dave Nielsen with 42 points, runner-up went to Karen Heading with 41 points on a count-back from third place winner Doug Johnstone, also with 41 points also on a count-back from Jack Day 41 points. Ball Count Down included Gary Wright, David Whish, Richard Owen and Graham Shoebridge. NTP went to 3 & 6 - Greg Childe-Freeman and 5 - Chris Pottinger. Witta Tennis Club Contributed by Maree Hooley The Wonders went into the final Comp round needing a solid 8/4 victory over one of last year’s finalists, Mooloolaba, in order to make the final. Sadly it was not to be, with the day ending as close as you can get at 6 sets all and 52 games all. Unfortunately the result meant that the Wonders season has drawn to a close, tantalisingly close, but no cigar on this occasion. The day’s standout was once again a Wonder woman, Leigh Anne Fraser who won all her 4 matches and almost singlehandedly got the Wonders across the line. It was in hindsight a memorable season with 3 of the 6 team members being local Witta players, a sterling result given the size and firepower of some of the clubs we compete against in this competition. Jani and Frank playing as 1 and 2 rolled some quality opponents throughout the season, while Jane, Leigh Anne and Caroline more than held their own throughout. Sean Lepper joined the team late following injury to Anthony and performed above and beyond. Roll on next season or shake and bake as Jani would say ... whatever that means! In tough hot conditions at the Maleny Tennis courts the visiting Nambas team gave the Wompoos a bit of a tennis lesson in winning our match by 8 sets to 4 sets. Thanks to Jeff and Jo for joining with Wompoos for the match but sorry it couldn't be a better result. Still the team

has accumulated sufficient points during a long season and now will challenge the leading team, Gympie, in the finals which are to be played on 12 November at Nambour (Washington Street) courts. It was a hot hot hot day, but very enjoyable. The Wikings prevailed in the end but again, a close day 9 sets to 3, but only 17 games in it. Maree was a standout again, just everywhere at once, No John had thigh slapping injuries, Glenno, Mike, and Lobster had forehand stuff going on and a really good Andrew played. A fantastic season, over the years our friendship has really formed the basis of the Wikings and we are proud to be in the Div 3 final in a couple of weeks, good on youse. Thank you to Glenno, No John, Mike, Moser, Maree and Lobster, Please support your Wikings Sunday 12 November at Washington street, Nambour. Whistlers played at Kawana, against Ballinger Smartinis. It was so windy and ball was going everywhere, so we all struggled. But we somehow worked out and had a good win. Score was 43-21 games, 7-1 sets. Teams was Liz Mellish, Brenda Warner, Aki Lepper and Maree Hooley. The Wildcats had a very close match, beating the Fliers by only one game in the end. Thanks team for a season of tennis and lots of laughs, not to mention the lavish lunches accompanied by cold champagne.

Maleny Bowls Club
Contributed by Graeme Glover We had another great week of bowls at the club, with little rain not dampening the spirits of the visitors to our very popular Monday Monthly pair’s games. Some excellent bowls was played. This combined with an excellent afternoon tea made for a great day. Thanks to players and volunteers for supporting this event. Winners were Ray Oldfield and Les Bennett congratulations. Runners up were Rob Shoyer and Allan Lewis, no teams were lucky enough to win the jackpot. Tuesday Member’s bowls ended where the teams of Ray Pantlin and Graeme Glover could not be separated on margins from Joe Walters and Miles Allen in an enjoyable morning of bowls. Wednesday night was another great night of bowls with some wonderful bowls and fun being had by a great turnout. Winners were Krackerjacks, BenBryce, Outlaws, Handles and Made ups. Touchers were Allan Loynes, Kathy King, Ian Chatterton. Remember all welcome and everyone gets a game. Contact Miles Allen at the bowls club if you would like to be a part of the action. Friday saw another great afternoon of Scroungers, this is open to all bowlers, come on down and join in as an extension of Wednesday night bowls. Both of these are a great way to improve your bowls and enjoy the fun of bowls and our bar facilities. Stay on for members draw at 5.30pm. The club is open 2.30pm to 5.00pm Monday to Saturday, thanks to many volunteers, so take advantage of these opportunities and enjoy your membership. If you are thinking about membership, $10 gets you started, and then add the Bowls Qld affiliation for those who want to play in full member events. Participation is the greatest help to any club, we as a club would like to thank those who have supported us throughout the year so far. Everyone is a welcome face, your support is our best help. Grab a friend and have a roll up. Make up your own group. We are trying other times such as Saturday Night Fever - this is our attempt to maximise the club use, as well as manage our commitments as a community club staffed by volunteers so we thank you as we attempt to get the best fit. As a community club we appreciate the support of local people and businesses using our facilities for some of their activities that involve bowls as a great social activity. Between now and the end of the year we are working towards a bar upgrade thanks in part to a government grant. A reminder about Presentation, Paella and Pie is on Friday December 1, bookings can be made at the club. The jury, clearly confused, retires to deliberate. A very few minutes later, the jury returns and a representative pronounces a verdict of guilty. "But how?" inquires the lawyer. "You must have had some doubt; I saw all of you stare at the door." Answers the representative, "Oh, we did look. But your client didn't."
